- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:08I'm your host, Andrew Mcgibbon for November 25th.
- 0:11Today is National Parfait Day, celebrating that elegant,
- 0:15layered dessert that turns simple ingredients into
- 0:18something beautiful. The word parfait comes from
- 0:21French, meaning perfect. Originally, it described a
- 0:26frozen French dessert made with sugar syrup, egg and cream.
- 0:31But the American parfait evolved into something different.
- 0:35Layers of yogurt, fruit, granola, and sometimes pudding
- 0:39or ice cream stacked in a clear glass so you can see every
- 0:44delicious layer. What makes parfaits special
- 0:48isn't just taste, it's the visibility of the layers.
- 0:52Each ingredient remains distinct while contributing to the whole.
- 0:57You see the strawberries, the creamy yogurt, the crunchy
- 1:00granola. They don't blend into mush.
- 1:03They layer, creating something more interesting than any single
- 1:07ingredient alone. And that brings us to today's
- 1:10quote from poet Carl Sandburg, who captured something profound
- 1:15about layers when he wrote Life is Like an Onion.
- 1:21You peel it off one layer at a time, and sometimes you weep.
- 1:28Sandberg understood that life, like a parfait, is made of
- 1:31layers. We're not one-dimensional
- 1:34people. We're complex combinations of
- 1:36experiences, relationships, joys and sorrows stacked on top of
- 1:41each other. Each year adds a new layer.
- 1:44Each challenge, each triumph, each a loss.
- 1:48Another layer. Sometimes those layers make us
- 1:51weep, as Sandberg says. The painful memories, the hard
- 1:55lessons, the losses we still carry.
- 1:58But those layers are part of what makes us whole.
- 2:01Just like a parfait wouldn't be complete without every
- 2:04ingredient, the beauty of layers, whether in parfaits or
- 2:08in life, is that each one stays distinct yet contributes to
- 2:13something greater. Your childhood layer doesn't
- 2:16disappear when you become an adult.
- 2:19Your joy doesn't erase your pain.
- 2:22They all exist together, creating the complex,
- 2:25interesting person that you are. So today, make a parfait,
- 2:32literally or metaphorically. Layer yogurt and fruit.
- 2:36Stack your experiences with intention.
- 2:39Honor your own layers. Remember that you're not just
- 2:43one thing, your years of experiences carefully stacked
- 2:48up. Some layers are sweet, some are
- 2:51tough to swallow, but together they make you perfectly,
- 2:56imperfectly you. Because like Sandberg knew, life
- 3:00isn't simple. It's layered, and that's what
- 3:04makes it beautiful. That's going to do it.
