- 2:14Speaker 2: want to welcome into the show now, though it's been
- 2:16Speaker 2: a while since he's been on the show. From a
- 2:18Speaker 2: House Majority leader, Rick Staton, good morning, sir, welcome to
- 2:21Speaker 2: the show.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Good morning, Thank you for having me.
- 2:23Speaker 2: It has been a while since we've had you on.
- 2:25Speaker 4: How you been I've been doing well.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Thanks all right. Well, we had your scheduled a couple
- 2:28Speaker 2: of weeks ago and you had had a little minor
- 2:30Speaker 2: accident and I hope that you're doing better now you've
- 2:32Speaker 2: recovered nicely.
- 2:33Speaker 4: I see, thank you. I am all right.
- 2:36Speaker 2: So you, obviously, Rick have opinions on the way things
- 2:40Speaker 2: are now politically, and you're not shy about sharing them
- 2:43Speaker 2: on social media, which, by the way, if you don't
- 2:44Speaker 2: follow mister statement and social media, you certainly should. And
- 2:48Speaker 2: this columns type to pop up from time to time
- 2:51Speaker 2: into gazette mail. We'll get to all that a little
- 2:52Speaker 2: bit later on. But I didn't want to talk to
- 2:54Speaker 2: you a little bit about your career under the dome. Now,
- 2:57Speaker 2: what was it that made a kid from Mullin in
- 3:00Speaker 2: Wyoming County wants to rise up through the ranks to
- 3:04Speaker 2: be the House majority leader? To talk us to how
- 3:06Speaker 2: you got there.
- 3:07Speaker 4: You know, when I was in high school, I was
- 3:09Speaker 4: in a program through High WHI that had a model
- 3:14Speaker 4: legislature called Youth and Government, and I was always in
- 3:19Speaker 4: the House of Delegates. In my senior year in high school,
- 3:22Speaker 4: I was the Speaker of the House, and from that
- 3:25Speaker 4: day forward, my goal in life was being the House
- 3:27Speaker 4: of Delegates. And you know, I achieved that goal center
- 3:31Speaker 4: in my life than I thought I would and stayed
- 3:33Speaker 4: longer than I thought I would.
- 3:34Speaker 2: But how long were you there total in the leg leature?
- 3:37Speaker 4: Eighteen years?
- 3:37Speaker 2: Eighteen years? All right, give us a couple of really
- 3:40Speaker 2: good stories there. You know, I have Danny Jones on
- 3:42Speaker 2: the show every Monday, and Danny last week. Well, anytime
- 3:46Speaker 2: I have Danny on, he loves to tell stories about
- 3:49Speaker 2: the thing. Give us a couple of good, colorful stories
- 3:51Speaker 2: from allegedleature.
- 3:53Speaker 4: You know, one kind of funny story is when Bob
- 3:56Speaker 4: Kiss was speaker and I was a majority leader. You
- 3:59Speaker 4: have what are basically playbooks where you go through every
- 4:03Speaker 4: page and the speaker majority of leader on the same
- 4:06Speaker 4: page on uh, you know, what's what's coming up, what's
- 4:09Speaker 4: the next item of business? And I did not know this,
- 4:13Speaker 4: but a friend had planted a picture of me from
- 4:17Speaker 4: fourth grade when I was in a dancing class and
- 4:20Speaker 4: a blue sequin to tuxedo. And we're flipping through those pages.
- 4:25Speaker 4: And I flipped and saw that and just cracked up
- 4:28Speaker 4: and left the chamber, and uh, you know, Bob was
- 4:31Speaker 4: in on it, and some of the others were, but
- 4:34Speaker 4: the rest of the house didn't even know what was
- 4:36Speaker 4: going on. But I, you know, I couldn't recover from
- 4:39Speaker 4: that moment to go back on the script.
- 4:42Speaker 2: It was a you know, and I've talked to people
- 4:45Speaker 2: from time to time the show, as I mentioned Danny
- 4:47Speaker 2: and others that have said it was a it was
- 4:49Speaker 2: a totally different time. And then that's to be expected.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I mean, everything can't remain the same. But I have
- 4:55Speaker 2: always wondered what it would be like, you know, somebody
- 4:59Speaker 2: covering doing I've been in this show since twenty twenty,
- 5:01Speaker 2: but if I put the clock back to late nineteen
- 5:03Speaker 2: ninety or ninety five or even the eighties or whatever.
- 5:06Speaker 2: It was just a totally different time.
- 5:07Speaker 5: You know.
- 5:07Speaker 2: It wasn't the era of social media, certainly not to
- 5:10Speaker 2: the extent we have now. There wasn't as much coverage,
- 5:14Speaker 2: immediate coverage. I mean, you know, the television stations and
- 5:17Speaker 2: WHS radio we covered it, but it wasn't as immediate
- 5:22Speaker 2: as it is now. It's a totally different time now,
- 5:24Speaker 2: it is.
- 5:25Speaker 4: I use as an example of that day that in
- 5:28Speaker 4: the press understandably went crazy when we did this, But
- 5:32Speaker 4: we had some major issue that I can't remember what
- 5:35Speaker 4: it was. But caucuses are closed to the public, and
- 5:39Speaker 4: the Democrats called a caucus in the House at a
- 5:41Speaker 4: certain time, and the Republicans called a caucus in the
- 5:45Speaker 4: House at the very same time, and so all of
- 5:48Speaker 4: us caucused together with the press and the public excluded.
- 5:53Speaker 4: But we worked on a compromise for what that legislation
- 5:56Speaker 4: would look like. And that would never happen today current atmosphere.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Why do you say it would never happen?
- 6:03Speaker 4: The hyper partisanship along the party lines and the and
- 6:08Speaker 4: the lines that have been drawn have just been very
- 6:11Speaker 4: disturbing to me. Uh, you know, it just seems that
- 6:15Speaker 4: you know, they shouted each other rather than one for
- 6:17Speaker 4: consensus and compromise. And uh uh you know some of
- 6:22Speaker 4: the things, like I mentioned in a calm on a
- 6:24Speaker 4: couple of weeks ago, just uh frankly upon me. Uh,
- 6:27Speaker 4: we used to meet every Friday with the governor. Uh
- 6:31Speaker 4: and uh to have read a few weeks ago that
- 6:34Speaker 4: Vernon Cres the House financed here said he had not
- 6:36Speaker 4: spoken to the governor since the legislative session started just
- 6:40Speaker 4: appalled me. And that the governor was outside Vernon's office, Uh,
- 6:45Speaker 4: you know, gathering people on the Hope Scholarship legislation, but
- 6:49Speaker 4: didn't even walk in and try to talk to him
- 6:51Speaker 4: about it. That just I'm stunned about those kind of things.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Talking again, uh with our buddy Rick Stateton here, why
- 6:59Speaker 2: did you leave politics as member of the legislature.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Pardon me?
- 7:03Speaker 2: Why did you leave? Why why did you not stay engaged?
- 7:06Speaker 4: I would try do to illness. Voters got sick of me.
- 7:10Speaker 4: I the one way to put it. Yeah, I lost
- 7:13Speaker 4: selection in two thousand and six. Would at that time
- 7:18Speaker 4: that we were a two seat district and Richard Browning
- 7:21Speaker 4: was re elected and Mike Bird has defeated me.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Mister Brownie just passed away sometime we're the last six
- 7:27Speaker 2: months or something. Yeah, great, God, yeah he was I
- 7:29Speaker 2: know him very well. A great game.
- 7:30Speaker 4: And then two years later I was selected prosecutor.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Did you ever once consider going back or have you
- 7:36Speaker 2: considered it since?
- 7:38Speaker 4: No, not really. I kind of believe what Robert Frost
- 7:42Speaker 4: said about you can't go home again, and I, you know,
- 7:47Speaker 4: I don't think that I could be as effective. And
- 7:52Speaker 4: as my daughter told me, you know, people have urged
- 7:55Speaker 4: me to run for office and specifically the legislature. Frankly,
- 7:58Speaker 4: don't know if I could go from front road to
- 8:00Speaker 4: the back row. Yeah, and so I have great memories
- 8:04Speaker 4: up there and I kind of don't want to disturb them.
- 8:07Speaker 2: You ever thought about doing a book?
- 8:09Speaker 4: I'm actually I wouldn't don't know if you would call
- 8:11Speaker 4: it specifically a book, But my daughter bought me an
- 8:16Speaker 4: autobiography that you fell out and answering questions, and that
- 8:19Speaker 4: has led to writing very a lot of stories. And
- 8:24Speaker 4: Judge Bean in Wood County, whom I served with, is
- 8:28Speaker 4: also working on something and we've collaborated some to get
- 8:31Speaker 4: stories together to kind of publish about funny moments but
- 8:37Speaker 4: also behind the scene moments about you know, things that
- 8:40Speaker 4: happened and how and why they got to be what
- 8:42Speaker 4: they are.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Do you fast forward a little bit to where we
- 8:46Speaker 2: are current day, and I said, the coverage of the
- 8:48Speaker 2: legislature has changed because it's instantaneous now, I mean from
- 8:51Speaker 2: members of the press corps immediately on X and on online,
- 8:55Speaker 2: on the websites and so on and so forth. But
- 8:57Speaker 2: even the delegates and these senators them, so they have
- 9:01Speaker 2: many of them have a very big online presence. They
- 9:03Speaker 2: constantly update their voters and their followers on what they're doing.
- 9:07Speaker 2: They're using TikTok and things of that nature. How would
- 9:10Speaker 2: you have adapted to that? I think I would have
- 9:14Speaker 2: adapted very well to it. I don't understand a lot
- 9:17Speaker 2: of technology, but I love what it can do for you.
- 9:19Speaker 4: And you know, I was very proud, for example, that
- 9:23Speaker 4: we responded to every letter or phone call from my
- 9:26Speaker 4: district first, and then you know, as I grew in leadership,
- 9:30Speaker 4: I got letters and culturom wider areas and that was
- 9:33Speaker 4: an area that we didn't have emails and instant communication
- 9:37Speaker 4: those kind of things, but we were still manageable to
- 9:40Speaker 4: do that. And I think that in an error like this,
- 9:43Speaker 4: there's really not an excuse for members of government to
- 9:48Speaker 4: keep in touch with their constituents, either by releases or
- 9:52Speaker 4: TikTok videos or even just personal responses to emails and texts.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Did you ever think there would be a Republican super majority?
- 10:01Speaker 2: I mean, because after you know, eight decades of Democratic control,
- 10:06Speaker 2: I think, and I'm more interested in here in your opinion,
- 10:09Speaker 2: I think that it's not as big a surprise that
- 10:11Speaker 2: the Republicans would one day take over. But to the
- 10:15Speaker 2: extent that they have now, is that a surprise to you?
- 10:19Speaker 6: Yes?
- 10:20Speaker 4: And that those majorities grew. I think in twenty fourteen
- 10:22Speaker 4: there was a lot of frustration with the Democratic Party
- 10:26Speaker 4: and I think, you know, it sounds small, but that
- 10:28Speaker 4: bumper sticker that they had that said eighty years or
- 10:31Speaker 4: whatever is enough. I think that was a very effective
- 10:34Speaker 4: communication and people said, you know what, let's try something different.
- 10:39Speaker 4: And I think that was an effective message. And to
- 10:43Speaker 4: their credit, they had candidates in place across the state,
- 10:47Speaker 4: and so when people soured on the Democratic brand, people
- 10:51Speaker 4: were ready to the Republican and there were people in
- 10:54Speaker 4: places to replace those people, and that's how the takeover happened.
- 10:59Speaker 2: What do you make of the current Democratic Party rick
- 11:01Speaker 2: particularly on the national level, because and I think you
- 11:04Speaker 2: would probably agree with this, the National Democratic Party has
- 11:08Speaker 2: changed over the years, and to be fair, for that matter,
- 11:10Speaker 2: so has the National Republican Party. We went from the
- 11:13Speaker 2: Party of Reagan to the party of what we now
- 11:15Speaker 2: have under Donald Trump. What do you make of the
- 11:18Speaker 2: current National Democrats and the National Republicans?
- 11:23Speaker 4: This is where I think there is a somewhat disconnect
- 11:25Speaker 4: between National Democratic Party and the state Democratic voters, or
- 11:30Speaker 4: the voters in West Virginia. West Virginia has already always
- 11:34Speaker 4: been a more moderate conservative state, and so what people
- 11:39Speaker 4: hate the labels, but what we call a progressive movement
- 11:43Speaker 4: within the Democratic Party is something that I don't think
- 11:46Speaker 4: is resonating well with the voters in West Virginia because
- 11:50Speaker 4: we're still moderate to conservative in some of our votes
- 11:53Speaker 4: and issues. Some of those have migrated, but they haven't
- 11:56Speaker 4: migrated to the extent that they have on the national level.
- 12:00Speaker 4: And so I think that there's a disconnect between what
- 12:04Speaker 4: was being, you know, perpetuated by the National Party versus
- 12:08Speaker 4: our attempts within the Democrat Party to try to perpetuate
- 12:12Speaker 4: that in West Virginia.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Many people have said on the national level that the
- 12:18Speaker 2: Democrats mistake in a lot of rural areas like West Virginia,
- 12:22Speaker 2: you know a few other states as well, is that
- 12:24Speaker 2: they focused on things that were just too far left
- 12:28Speaker 2: and that as used to your point, that's not where
- 12:31Speaker 2: the voter, where the electorate is in West Virginia, and
- 12:34Speaker 2: that they need to bring it back by Many people
- 12:36Speaker 2: think that at the midterms eventually, what is going to
- 12:40Speaker 2: happen if the Democrats don't There's Bill Maher, one of
- 12:42Speaker 2: my heroes, said last week, if they don't lose this
- 12:45Speaker 2: or maybe it might have been Stephen A. Smith said
- 12:47Speaker 2: on the Bill Moore Show, it's the midterms on a
- 12:51Speaker 2: national level, are the Democrats to win if they don't
- 12:55Speaker 2: screw it up by continuing to push these far left issues?
- 12:59Speaker 2: To that you would say what.
- 13:01Speaker 4: I think that both on a national and estate level,
- 13:04Speaker 4: we need to focus on you know what are more
- 13:08Speaker 4: coloquially called the kitchen table issues, and the price of gas,
- 13:14Speaker 4: the price of groceries, the price of your utility bills.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Those are the things that people are looking at right
- 13:20Speaker 4: now and everything else is a distraction. And if you
- 13:25Speaker 4: focus on those things and use what is called triangular
- 13:29Speaker 4: discussion where you bring that discussion back to that point.
- 13:33Speaker 4: I think we get distracted talking about those other issues,
- 13:36Speaker 4: and then we go down rabbit holes talking about the
- 13:40Speaker 4: you know, the device of cultural social issues when actually
- 13:44Speaker 4: people at home are saying, you know what, my power
- 13:46Speaker 4: building up by thirty percent last month, gas is up
- 13:50Speaker 4: you know, a dollar and twenty nine since the war started.
- 13:53Speaker 4: And I think those are the areas where candidates of
- 13:56Speaker 4: all parties need to focus. I'm not trying to brand
- 14:00Speaker 4: one or the other, but that's what people at home thinking.
- 14:02Speaker 2: About your thoughts on President Trump.
- 14:07Speaker 4: I think that he is, to be honest, that continually
- 14:11Speaker 4: unhinged and unchecked. And I don't know if there is
- 14:15Speaker 4: a mental or other deficiency or if this is just
- 14:18Speaker 4: who he is. And he's surrounded by people who, you know,
- 14:21Speaker 4: do not close the door and say, wait a minute,
- 14:24Speaker 4: let's reflect on this, and we, frankly, in my judgment,
- 14:29Speaker 4: suffer from that. And I think the warrant Iran is
- 14:32Speaker 4: an example, and I think it's going to be a
- 14:35Speaker 4: quagmire that from which the world economy may not recover.
- 14:39Speaker 2: He seems to think it's all going to come to
- 14:41Speaker 2: an end tonight.
- 14:42Speaker 4: Yeah. I you know, I just was seeing your news
- 14:44Speaker 4: story about some bombing on Cargu Island, and you know,
- 14:49Speaker 4: I don't know. These are times where the norms don't
- 14:52Speaker 4: apply internationally, economically, militarily, and so I mean, I don't
- 14:59Speaker 4: know what the result it's going to be. But there's
- 15:02Speaker 4: certainly not times that we're used to where we can
- 15:04Speaker 4: say that there's a predictable result from what we what
- 15:08Speaker 4: we're going to do. You know, will bombing bridges and
- 15:11Speaker 4: power plants actually foam in a revolution within the country
- 15:16Speaker 4: where they take over from from that regime, I don't know.
- 15:20Speaker 4: It may drive them further into their their political ideology
- 15:25Speaker 4: and hate us worse. In the straight of form News
- 15:27Speaker 4: remains closed.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Rick Stayton has been a pleasure to have you on
- 15:30Speaker 2: a show today. Let's have you back on again soon.
- 15:33Speaker 2: I mean, I could sit and talk about this stuff.
- 15:35Speaker 2: I tell you what I have always wanted to do,
- 15:37Speaker 2: and I'm gonna I'm going to give you an assignment.
- 15:40Speaker 2: I want to do an entire show where I bring
- 15:43Speaker 2: it and I'll put you in charge of it. You
- 15:45Speaker 2: need something else to do, all right, I'm going to
- 15:48Speaker 2: put you in charge of it, and I want to
- 15:49Speaker 2: have three or four legislator from back in the day.
- 15:51Speaker 2: You pick whatever year and bring them in here and
- 15:54Speaker 2: just talk about stuff that I think. I think it
- 15:56Speaker 2: would be great. I'll take care of I'll take care
- 15:58Speaker 2: of Danny, okay, if you want to take care of
- 15:59Speaker 2: the asked, how's that?
- 16:00Speaker 4: Okay?
- 16:01Speaker 2: I would.
- 16:02Speaker 4: I'd love to see Danny again. I haven't seen him in

- 17:24Speaker 9: could cut corners on your credit card security, putting your
- 17:27Speaker 9: personal data at risk. Big chain retailers and warehouse stores

- 19:13Speaker 2: the show.
- 19:14Speaker 8: Morning Dave. Thanks man.
- 19:15Speaker 2: You know, one of the things I want you to
- 19:17Speaker 2: work on is the fact that the word entrepreneurial is
- 19:21Speaker 2: too difficult to spell. In my time, when I was
- 19:25Speaker 2: working in state government, I did a lot with entrepreneurship,
- 19:29Speaker 2: and I never correctly learned how to spell the word
- 19:32Speaker 2: entrepreneur That's probably why I'm back on the radio again.
- 19:35Speaker 8: Well, we're thankfully the computers can correct that I spelled it.
- 19:40Speaker 2: So bad the computer couldn't correct it. What does that
- 19:43Speaker 2: tell you? Tell us about this program, Brian, and how
- 19:45Speaker 2: it gets started?
- 19:46Speaker 8: So yeah, so yeah, I work for Advantage Valley. We've
- 19:51Speaker 8: been I've been with him since twenty twenty two and
- 19:54Speaker 8: the Faster WESTERNI program is a program designed to help
- 19:58Speaker 8: aspiring entrepreneurs people who have an idea but not knowing
- 20:01Speaker 8: really where to start, with businesses as as up to
- 20:07Speaker 8: about three years, who have been in business for about
- 20:10Speaker 8: three years.
- 20:10Speaker 2: What's the one thing that you see the most with
- 20:13Speaker 2: these businesses? Because I would think that there's probably a
- 20:16Speaker 2: lot of common denominators with the indivent, not the business,
- 20:19Speaker 2: but I mean the individuals when it comes to trying
- 20:21Speaker 2: to get their businesses up and running. The entrepreneurship I
- 20:23Speaker 2: aspect of it's probably one or two things that you
- 20:25Speaker 2: see in almost every case.
- 20:26Speaker 8: Well, most of them have a day job, right, So
- 20:29Speaker 8: it's a they're looking to maybe supplement income. Maybe it's
- 20:36Speaker 8: they just have a really good passion about something. I
- 20:38Speaker 8: want to see if it's more than a hobby. We
- 20:42Speaker 8: see that a lot, we don't. We do see some
- 20:44Speaker 8: who are like straight out quitting the day job.
- 20:47Speaker 2: But it doesn't happen that often. I mean generally speaking,
- 20:51Speaker 2: it's and i'd say probably, I don't want to put
- 20:53Speaker 2: words about probably the only exception to that would be
- 20:56Speaker 2: if you take these people, and I've always said this,
- 20:59Speaker 2: and I learned this in my time state government, people
- 21:01Speaker 2: that have a passion for something, no matter what it is.
- 21:05Speaker 2: It's art, it's music, it's they want to teach lessons,
- 21:07Speaker 2: they want to do whatever, and they got the idea, man,
- 21:11Speaker 2: and they're all full of the passion, but they don't
- 21:13Speaker 2: necessarily need to know how to go about it. And
- 21:17Speaker 2: they have a daytime job or in some cases a
- 21:19Speaker 2: nighttime job to be able so they can get theirs
- 21:23Speaker 2: up and moving. And I just I think that's an
- 21:25Speaker 2: interesting point that you brought up. Most people, the majority,
- 21:27Speaker 2: are not quitting their other job to go chase this passion.
- 21:31Speaker 2: They're usually doing something.
- 21:32Speaker 8: Else right, right, And this challenge is to that one.
- 21:36Speaker 8: You know, the first one is healthcare. Right when you
- 21:39Speaker 8: get into being your own, your your own boss, that
- 21:44Speaker 8: can get to that's that's a challenge for some people
- 21:46Speaker 8: to to walk away from what they might have or
- 21:50Speaker 8: to go with their own. But you know, back to
- 21:53Speaker 8: the point about the passion part if if it's not
- 21:55Speaker 8: something you're passionate about, then that's going to be a
- 21:59Speaker 8: challenge because it's not easy to run your own business.
- 22:01Speaker 2: No, it's not. And there's so much that goes into
- 22:04Speaker 2: it that people don't realize. Again, you go back to
- 22:07Speaker 2: the passion. I know how to make these things, whatever
- 22:10Speaker 2: these things are. But I don't know the first thing
- 22:12Speaker 2: about HR I don't know the first thing about insurance.
- 22:15Speaker 2: I don't know the first thing about tax and things
- 22:17Speaker 2: of that nature. And luckily we do have a lot
- 22:19Speaker 2: of great resources here in the state. I mean, you've
- 22:21Speaker 2: got the Small Business Development Center, you got the SBA,
- 22:24Speaker 2: you've got organizations like yours, Charleston, your line, you've got
- 22:26Speaker 2: help available in state government and you know so. But
- 22:29Speaker 2: but sometimes that can be a challenge to a lot
- 22:31Speaker 2: of people.
- 22:32Speaker 8: Right and it is. There's but when you when you
- 22:35Speaker 8: reach out to us, you know, advantage Valley dot Com
- 22:37Speaker 8: got our website, there's there's a button at the top.
- 22:40Speaker 8: It's as fast as West Virginia. There's a lot of
- 22:42Speaker 8: different ways you can connect to to me, to our
- 22:46Speaker 8: business coaches. We can I just.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Realized I've been saying Charleston near your life couple times.
- 22:54Speaker 8: He messed it up.
- 22:55Speaker 2: The first time, well at least I was con said,
- 22:57Speaker 2: I just I don't know what I was thinking. I've
- 22:59Speaker 2: known you for over years, and I said, Charleston Area,
- 23:01Speaker 2: it's you're with Advantage Valley. My apologies, my apologies to you,
- 23:06Speaker 2: and to Tarrell and two and to Marjorie and everybody.
- 23:09Speaker 2: I apologize, Man, I don't know what. I don't know
- 23:11Speaker 2: what I was thinking.
- 23:12Speaker 8: I can only imagine Marjorie right now.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Marjorie.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Sorry, Marjorie. You know what. I blame cancer for everything.
- 23:19Speaker 2: So that's what it is. It's the cancer. I'm sorry. No,
- 23:23Speaker 2: I'm sorry. No, it is Advantage Valley. I'm sorry. Man,
- 23:25Speaker 2: go ahead, but.
- 23:26Speaker 8: Uh but yeah, there's ways to connect to us. But
- 23:28Speaker 8: you know, kind of back to your your point, though,
- 23:30Speaker 8: there's a lot of different things that you have to
- 23:33Speaker 8: understand to successfully operate a business, right, and so what
- 23:38Speaker 8: we're here to do is to help you navigate some
- 23:41Speaker 8: of those. And you know, oftentimes people are not sure
- 23:45Speaker 8: which business license to even get. Yeah, you have sole
- 23:48Speaker 8: proprietor or LLC and you have Well we'll talk with
- 23:51Speaker 8: you and help you understand the differences between the two.
- 23:53Speaker 8: What's what Uh, you know the potential liabilities that are
- 23:58Speaker 8: there by picking them one over the other.
- 24:00Speaker 4: Uh.
- 24:00Speaker 8: And then people I just talked to a couple yesterday.
- 24:04Speaker 8: It's a new business. They just started in February. They
- 24:10Speaker 8: had not even thought about talking to an accountant yet,
- 24:13Speaker 8: and they're already selling product.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Right, So that's a restipe for disaster.
- 24:17Speaker 8: It could be right, right, So you know there's things
- 24:20Speaker 8: that it's expensive to run a business. I'm not gonna lie,
- 24:25Speaker 8: but we can help you understand. You know what all
- 24:29Speaker 8: those costs are going to be, and what's what's most
- 24:31Speaker 8: important and what you can you know what you need
- 24:33Speaker 8: to do to make sure you're setting yourself up correctly
- 24:37Speaker 8: to give you the best opportunity.
- 24:39Speaker 2: And branding is so important, especially if you know the
- 24:42Speaker 2: difference between Advantage Valley and Charleston Area Alliance, that's even
- 24:46Speaker 2: more important. That's on me.
- 24:47Speaker 8: Yeah, one is on top of the history.
- 24:51Speaker 2: As I said. The embarrassing thing about that, Brian is
- 24:53Speaker 2: I've known you for a number of years and I
- 24:54Speaker 2: don't know what I was thinking. I was going off
- 24:56Speaker 2: on my field. You have an event coming up tonight
- 24:59Speaker 2: featuring into the program. Jim Strawn absolutely actually today it's
- 25:03Speaker 2: the middle of the day, a middle of the amswer yep.
- 25:05Speaker 8: So we have some of the things we do are
- 25:07Speaker 8: different types of workshops. This one today is called turn
- 25:11Speaker 8: your Property into Opportunity and it's a it's an Airbnb
- 25:15Speaker 8: workshop on how you set that up, the good and
- 25:18Speaker 8: the bad, and how you can really make use of
- 25:21Speaker 8: extra property that you have, whether it's an extra home
- 25:25Speaker 8: or it's a piece of land. Right, there's different ways
- 25:28Speaker 8: you can you can utilize that property to maybe earn
- 25:32Speaker 8: some income from it. And so Jim is going to
- 25:34Speaker 8: lead us today at twelve at the Kennall County Library.
- 25:38Speaker 8: It's on the third floor and the bigger conference rooms.
- 25:41Speaker 8: You can show up in person or you can go
- 25:43Speaker 8: on our website and right in the middle you'll see
- 25:47Speaker 8: upcoming events. There's a length there you can register for
- 25:49Speaker 8: it and watch over zoom.
- 25:52Speaker 2: And here's the thing about the airbnbs I think are
- 25:54Speaker 2: interesting with people. Brian again we're talking with Brian Shaw
- 25:57Speaker 2: of Advantage Valley. But people think of airbnb's, they only
- 26:01Speaker 2: think of the beach, they only think of the mountains,
- 26:03Speaker 2: and and there's certainly a lot of those there, but
- 26:05Speaker 2: they're everywhere that people would be surprised to know how
- 26:08Speaker 2: many of these that there are or similar types in
- 26:12Speaker 2: Charleston and in uh in all over Kanawa County, Putnam County.
- 26:16Speaker 8: I mean they're everywhere here, right, there's they they serve
- 26:19Speaker 8: different purposes. There's some that people are you know, there's
- 26:23Speaker 8: traveling traveling nurses, right, or a great example of people
- 26:26Speaker 8: who are coming to the area. They're going to be
- 26:28Speaker 8: here for six months or maybe a year, and they
- 26:32Speaker 8: look to airbnb uh to to be able to rent
- 26:36Speaker 8: a place long term, but not you know, committing to
- 26:39Speaker 8: a long lease.
- 26:40Speaker 4: Right.
- 26:40Speaker 8: But then the tourism aspect of it. I mean, we
- 26:44Speaker 8: our state runs so many ads outside of our state
- 26:47Speaker 8: trying to attract people here. There's a lot of things
- 26:50Speaker 8: we're doing here in the outdoor economy and the outdoor
- 26:53Speaker 8: space that are you know, designed to bring people in
- 26:56Speaker 8: here to enjoy this. I mean, it's it's just beautiful here.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:00Speaker 8: So there are places that you know are are ideal
- 27:05Speaker 8: for for an airbnb, yeah.
- 27:07Speaker 2: I mean, and and I've got a very good friend
- 27:10Speaker 2: of mine who travels extensively for work, and he told
- 27:13Speaker 2: me a couple of years ago, he said, once I discovered,
- 27:16Speaker 2: you know, using facilities like that, I'm never going back
- 27:18Speaker 2: to another hotel again because he stays as a matter
- 27:21Speaker 2: of fact, anytime he's in Charleston, he stays in one
- 27:23Speaker 2: which is in downtown Charleston.
- 27:25Speaker 10: You know.
- 27:25Speaker 2: And because of the it's it's it's more like being
- 27:29Speaker 2: in an actual home than being in the sterile hotel room.
- 27:32Speaker 8: Yeap on. So that one's today, uh into next month,
- 27:40Speaker 8: starting in May, we have another workshop that we're doing.
- 27:43Speaker 8: It's called the It's a Business Outdoor or it's an
- 27:47Speaker 8: Outdoor Business Accelerator program. So this is going to be
- 27:51Speaker 8: a little bit more intensive than a one, you know,
- 27:53Speaker 8: an hour and a half workshop. With this one, we're
- 27:56Speaker 8: looking to uh to find people who have an idea
- 28:00Speaker 8: or an early stage business that is something that works
- 28:03Speaker 8: in the outdoor. Now, that could be someone who wants
- 28:06Speaker 8: to start a kayak rental business or a transportation business
- 28:11Speaker 8: that transports people to and from those those outdoor spaces.
- 28:15Speaker 8: Or maybe maybe they have some equipment that they've designed
- 28:19Speaker 8: that they want to create that makes that works in
- 28:22Speaker 8: the outdoor space. Or it's clothing, right, maybe they have
- 28:25Speaker 8: a new jacket design or a new i don't know,
- 28:29Speaker 8: a new hat or a new shoes or all kinds
- 28:32Speaker 8: of different things that work in the outdoor space. And
- 28:35Speaker 8: this accelerator program is designed to help someone take that idea,
- 28:40Speaker 8: work through it, make sure there's a market for it,
- 28:43Speaker 8: help you with all those steps, and then ideally if
- 28:46Speaker 8: if it if it fits, then you can we can
- 28:49Speaker 8: help you launch it.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Doing some great stuff over there with the Advantage Valley.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Where can people learn more about all the things that
- 28:55Speaker 2: because I mean there's so many things you can ask
- 28:57Speaker 2: got going on over there. Where's the best place for
- 28:58Speaker 2: people can learn more?
- 29:00Speaker 8: So, of course follow us on our socials, but if
- 29:02Speaker 8: you go to Advantage Value dot com and at the
- 29:04Speaker 8: top you'll see faster w V click on that, and
- 29:09Speaker 8: on that first landing page there's upcoming workshops, there's ways
- 29:14Speaker 8: to connect to directly to our business coaches or myself
- 29:18Speaker 8: and then and that's really the best way. And then
- 29:20Speaker 8: of course signing up for the newsletter. Marjorie puts together
- 29:23Speaker 8: a great newsletter every month that goes out that gives
- 29:26Speaker 8: you the latest information on on on what's going on
- 29:29Speaker 8: in the market and in ways that you can you
- 29:32Speaker 8: can reach out to us for for support to help
- 29:34Speaker 8: you with your with your business. Idea because we do
- 29:37Speaker 8: I mean from business coaching to uh we do have
- 29:40Speaker 8: some grants that we can use, and we even have
- 29:42Speaker 8: a loan fund where we can help you get the
- 29:44Speaker 8: money that you need to start that business. And all
- 29:47Speaker 8: of the things we do are at no cost, which
- 29:49Speaker 8: is fantastic and it's just a great opportunity. So that's
- 29:52Speaker 8: a that's my two cents.
- 29:55Speaker 2: And and with you and and the folks forgive me
- 29:57Speaker 2: for getting the name wrong. I don't know, and I
- 30:00Speaker 2: will say I've known you for how many years? I

- 34:36Speaker 2: him on the show about that tomorrow, plus a lot
- 34:39Speaker 2: of talk about the big University of Charleston Marathon happening
- 34:42Speaker 2: this weekend. I didn't realize it was that big a deal,
- 34:46Speaker 2: face it, because I'm not really the marathon type. The
- 34:50Speaker 2: extent of my marathon knowledge is if I stop at
- 34:52Speaker 2: a marathon gas station to buy beer on the way home.
- 34:55Speaker 2: But anyway, this marathon is this weekend. Do you see
- 34:59Speaker 2: marathon huge? And Charles the first time at a number

- 37:07Speaker 2: in Iran, as I was earlier, Oh the President he
- 37:10Speaker 2: is out again with another post on truth social this
- 37:16Speaker 2: one hitting just after eight this morning. He says, a
- 37:20Speaker 2: whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.
- 37:25Speaker 2: I don't want that to happen, but it probably will. However,
- 37:28Speaker 2: now that we have complete and total regime change, where different,
- 37:32Speaker 2: smarter and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionary, wonderful
- 37:38Speaker 2: can happen. Who knows, we will find out tonight. One
- 37:42Speaker 2: of the most important moments in the long and complex
- 37:44Speaker 2: history of the world. Forty seven years of extortion, corruption
- 37:47Speaker 2: and death will finally end. God bless the great people

- 38:12Speaker 2: mind numbing work of listening to the syndicated conservative anger
- 38:16Speaker 2: media otherwise known as scam. See what you did there.
- 38:20Speaker 2: It seems their talking points on the war are coalescing
- 38:23Speaker 2: into a sellable narrative. Number one, Trump was forced to
- 38:26Speaker 2: bomb Iran. Number two bombed Iran, which no other president
- 38:29Speaker 2: would do. Three Trump is tough for bombing Iran. Four
- 38:33Speaker 2: Bombing Iran is America first because it's for national security.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Number five Iran's missiles have longer ranged than previously known.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Number six Iran was going to nuke bomb the US eventually.
- 38:45Speaker 2: And number seven Iran has hated America for forty seven years.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Text.
- 38:50Speaker 2: We did a good job of writing it all down.
- 38:54Speaker 2: Let me see text, says your guest. Earlier said the

- 38:58Speaker 2: world economy will not cover. That's the dumbest, most biased
- 39:02Speaker 2: take I've ever heard. It's very political rather than based
- 39:06Speaker 2: in reality. I want to give you a word or
- 39:09Speaker 2: two about one of our sponsors on the show. They
- 39:11Speaker 2: or he sponsors the tax line, of course, talking about
- 39:14Speaker 2: Tony the Taylor Virginia Street. Tony's having a Brac Brax
- 39:17Speaker 2: br Ax trunk show and it's happening this Thursday, and
- 39:20Speaker 2: I can tell you from experiences pants are amazing. I'm
- 39:24Speaker 2: actually wearing a pair right now. This trunk show is
- 39:27Speaker 2: going to be Thursday, and it starts at eleven o'clock
- 39:30Speaker 2: in the morning. You can save twenty percent off each
- 39:33Speaker 2: pair and buy three pairs and get a pair free.
- 39:36Speaker 2: And you know, Tony has his point system set up
- 39:38Speaker 2: for his customers and he's doing double points all day
- 39:41Speaker 2: when you buy your bras breches. And as of all
- 39:44Speaker 2: that weren't enough, Tony is going to be at the
- 39:47Speaker 2: grill with his famous Italian sausage and pepper sandwiches, and
- 39:50Speaker 2: I can tell you one hundred percent from experience, they
- 39:54Speaker 2: are amazing. I'm just trying to figure out how I
- 39:58Speaker 2: can talk somebody into going down there. Because I'm kind
- 40:01Speaker 2: of busy, you know. I get to the building at
- 40:03Speaker 2: seven in the morning. I don't leave till four or
- 40:05Speaker 2: five in the afternoon. Doesn't give me a lot of
- 40:07Speaker 2: time go to lunch or anything like that anymore. But
- 40:08Speaker 2: if somebody you know wants to hook a brother up,
- 40:12Speaker 2: you know, with some of those Italian sausages and Pepper's
- 40:15Speaker 2: from my man, mister Parrenzino, I appreciate it. But the

- 40:25Speaker 2: in downtown Charleston, tex says Dave had to share thanks

- 40:32Speaker 2: Wendy's is giving away free fries and Frosty's today only.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Customers can walk in and request one free small order
- 40:40Speaker 2: of fries and one free small chocolate or vanilla frosty together.
- 40:45Speaker 2: At Wendy's participating Wendy's restaurants, customers get both to dunk
- 40:51Speaker 2: their fries and their frosty. No purchase necessary, no app
- 40:55Speaker 2: needed in the store only, no drive through, no online orders.
- 40:59Speaker 2: I don't know if this was when yourself, Ryan that
- 41:01Speaker 2: was senting me this text or what. But apparently you
- 41:04Speaker 2: can do that at Wendy's today, And if that's wrong,
- 41:06Speaker 2: then I apologize to the good people of Wendy's. I
- 41:08Speaker 2: did notice the other over the weekend watching some television,
- 41:11Speaker 2: and I noticed that Wendy No, for years people have
- 41:14Speaker 2: done the thing of dipping their fries into their frosty,
- 41:18Speaker 2: and Wendy's is finally starting to own that now and
- 41:21Speaker 2: they're actually advertising that. And I remember the first time
- 41:24Speaker 2: I ever saw someone do that. I was in high
- 41:26Speaker 2: school and a bunch of us were at Wendy's and
- 41:27Speaker 2: Logan and I saw somebody do that, and I thought
- 41:30Speaker 2: that just weird, and then I tried it. It's actually
- 41:33Speaker 2: pretty good. It was actually pretty good. So that's a
- 41:37Speaker 2: message from your friends there and Wendy's. Tex says one
- 41:42Speaker 2: of the biggest issues with both the boomer Democrats and
- 41:45Speaker 2: these young socialists is, if you actually listen to them,
- 41:48Speaker 2: is how nasty some of these people are talk about
- 41:53Speaker 2: beer for a moment, which I was earlier, and I mean,
- 41:57Speaker 2: you can't talk about Tony via Taylor's Italian Sausage and
- 41:59Speaker 2: not think about beer. Last night the Kanawha County Board
- 42:03Speaker 2: of Education voted to approve beer sales at Laidley Field
- 42:06Speaker 2: for events not I repeat, not affiliated with the school
- 42:10Speaker 2: district now. The vote went four to one. Only one
- 42:14Speaker 2: board member, Joe Crawford, vote no, and we have a
- 42:16Speaker 2: story posted about it at wcchsnetwork dot com. The General
- 42:20Speaker 2: council for the board, Lindsay McIntosh, told the board that
- 42:23Speaker 2: beer sales would only be permitted at things like college
- 42:26Speaker 2: football games or other events that don't involve public schools.
- 42:31Speaker 2: So if you thought you were going to go to
- 42:32Speaker 2: a game at Lately and get ripped, your local high
- 42:35Speaker 2: school football game or the state championships, that's not the case.
- 42:38Speaker 2: The field itself will not be selling the beer to
- 42:41Speaker 2: be outside vendors, and they've allowed this for some time
- 42:43Speaker 2: on different events that were happening there. So it's not
- 42:48Speaker 2: going to be in high school football games or anything
- 42:49Speaker 2: like that. And when you think about it, it's really
- 42:51Speaker 2: not that different than what you see at a WV
- 42:53Speaker 2: or Marshall game. Of course, there are people that are
- 42:56Speaker 2: upset about it because you know you don't have that anyway,
- 43:00Speaker 2: read the story whsnetwork dot com. I support it, I

- 47:35Speaker 2: between the US Department of Justice and several Secretaries of State,
- 47:40Speaker 2: including our own Chris Warner. There is a movement and
- 47:45Speaker 2: we've talked about it in the past. Attorneys for the
- 47:47Speaker 2: US Department of Justice, the DOJ, have filed a federal
- 47:52Speaker 2: lawsuit over the release of sensitive voter registration information. Now,
- 47:59Speaker 2: that was in February, and on Friday, the attorney for
- 48:05Speaker 2: the Department of Justice officially filed a motion to force
- 48:09Speaker 2: disclosure of voting records. So think about it this way.
- 48:15Speaker 2: The states are in charge of the elections. That's in
- 48:17Speaker 2: the constitution. States are in charge of the election. But
- 48:19Speaker 2: what the Trump administration is wanting to do, and this
- 48:21Speaker 2: is not new, they've tried this before. They want to
- 48:25Speaker 2: force the states to turn over voter information to their administration,
- 48:34Speaker 2: direct violation of everything because elections are left to the states.
- 48:39Speaker 2: So on Friday, the Attorney for the DOJ officially filed
- 48:43Speaker 2: this motion to disclose these voting records, including here in
- 48:47Speaker 2: West Virginia. Secretary of State Chris Warner, who is a
- 48:51Speaker 2: Republican former state Republican Party chair, big Trump bicker in
- 48:56Speaker 2: the past, has said no to the request. Secretary Warner
- 49:03Speaker 2: has now said no twice, and I say good on him,
- 49:09Speaker 2: because what is being asked for here is a direct
- 49:14Speaker 2: violation of the law. And this all goes back to
- 49:19Speaker 2: the Trump administration trying to say that the election of
- 49:24Speaker 2: twenty twenty was fraudulent, and it has been proven over
- 49:28Speaker 2: and over and over again in court rooms and judges
- 49:31Speaker 2: that were tied closely to the Trump administration that that
- 49:34Speaker 2: wasn't the case. And again the twenty nine States and
- 49:40Speaker 2: also DC in there have just basically said no, this
- 49:44Speaker 2: is not your information. The law is pretty clear it
- 49:48Speaker 2: belongs to the states. Now the case has been assigned
- 49:52Speaker 2: to US History Judge Thomas Johnston, and it's going to
- 49:56Speaker 2: be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out.
- 50:01Speaker 2: I applaud Secretary of State Chris Warner and the other
- 50:06Speaker 2: twenty United States and DC for saying no to this.
- 50:11Speaker 2: And look, I've known Chris Warner and full disclosure I
- 50:15Speaker 2: worked for his brother. It puts them in a difficult position,
- 50:21Speaker 2: and from a political standpoint, I get that. I understand that.
- 50:24Speaker 2: But they're doing the right thing, as are these other
- 50:27Speaker 2: Secretary of State in voting officials from around the country,
- 50:30Speaker 2: because this is a direct violation of the law. And
- 50:33Speaker 2: I just wonder what Ronald Reagan would think about the
- 50:38Speaker 2: Republican Party wanting so much national central control, in this
- 50:45Speaker 2: case over the states, much like many, not all, many
- 50:52Speaker 2: Republicans on this state level have wanted to do getting
- 50:56Speaker 2: involved in more local issues. Just me thinking out loud,
- 51:03Speaker 2: tex says, Taco stands for Trump always chickens.
- 51:08Speaker 7: Out according to a texture. How's it going, t J,
- 51:12Speaker 7: It's going? Well, where does it stop? And I'm talking
- 51:16Speaker 7: about ignoring the rule of law. You know, everybody got
- 51:19Speaker 7: on my case about TikTok. We had a law that
- 51:22Speaker 7: said you can't have that here. We ignored it. We
- 51:26Speaker 7: continue to ignore it. We ignore it until we get
- 51:29Speaker 7: whatever deal will make it better. That's a crack in
- 51:31Speaker 7: the damn. Now we want to ignore this. We want
- 51:34Speaker 7: to ignore the rule of law that says the government
- 51:36Speaker 7: doesn't need this information. This is state information. We don't
- 51:39Speaker 7: care give it to us anyway. What's next? Where does
- 51:42Speaker 7: it stop? That's the problem with even the tiniest little
