- 0:48Speaker 1: get some cool guests. And boy, oh boy. Chicago versus
- 0:53Speaker 1: the Vikings and we have the great Jim McMahon. He
- 0:56Speaker 1: gave us... A little bit of time. Chad and I
- 0:59Speaker 1: asked him a bunch of insane questions as fans. We're
- 1:04Speaker 1: not good at being real football interviewers, but it was
- 1:07Speaker 1: a lot of fun. I think you're really going to
- 1:09Speaker 1: enjoy this one, guys. Let's get into it, and let's
- 1:13Speaker 1: get into our conversation with Jim McMahon.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Boom! I'm hot today.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Wreck it. Wreck it. That's a bad man.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Come on, baby.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Turn me up. Yeah. Touchdown.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of The Tailgate,
- 1:32Speaker 1: brought to you by Ticketmaster, the official ticket marketplace of
- 1:37Speaker 1: the Minnesota Vikings. I'm Cy Amundsen, he's Chad Daniels. We
- 1:42Speaker 1: appreciate you joining us. We got a fun one today.
- 1:45Speaker 1: We got the great Jim McMahon joining us in a
- 1:48Speaker 1: little bit.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Letting us ask him questions about... Our childhood joys. Man,
- 1:56Speaker 1: I can't wait. I got a fridge question. I know
- 1:58Speaker 1: you got a lot of questions.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I got to tell him something about the
- 2:02Speaker 2: Super Bowl shuffle, too.
- 2:04Speaker 1: It's going to be all the fun. Let's start with
- 2:06Speaker 1: a couple things here, and then we'll jump on the
- 2:08Speaker 1: phone with Jim. Bears this week coming off. I mean,
- 2:12Speaker 1: it's been over-talked by this point, but absurd, absurd win
- 2:18Speaker 1: to start the season. You were there.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Yes. Yes. It was.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I mean, I know we're not supposed to look backwards,
- 2:26Speaker 2: but I will just tell you there were several Packer
- 2:28Speaker 2: fans that were very loud early and then they were
- 2:31Speaker 2: gone with about seven minutes left, no longer sitting in
- 2:35Speaker 2: their seats.
- 2:36Speaker 1: One of the things I'm curious because you were in
- 2:38Speaker 1: the building and I think this is relevant looking back
- 2:41Speaker 1: and looking forward, you know, Justin Jefferson matches his touchdown
- 2:45Speaker 1: total from last year, eight catches, 92 yards. But Beyond
- 2:49Speaker 1: all of that stuff, I thought it was really interesting
- 2:52Speaker 1: to watch his body language. Even on TV, you could
- 2:56Speaker 1: just see his emotion, where he kept it together so
- 2:59Speaker 1: well last year, and it was just leaking out of
- 3:03Speaker 1: him in this game.
- 3:04Speaker 2: He was excited.
- 3:05Speaker 1: He was going nuts. And then after that touchdown, and
- 3:08Speaker 1: then they gave up the drive to end the half,
- 3:09Speaker 1: he was slumped, just so disappointed. I just felt like
- 3:13Speaker 1: throughout that game, he was the beating soul of almost
- 3:18Speaker 1: of the state on the field everywhere. Absolutely. Did it
- 3:21Speaker 1: feel that way in the stadium?
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yes, it did.
- 3:24Speaker 2: And it, and it was really interesting that here's something
- 3:28Speaker 2: that he never forgot is where the camera's going to
- 3:32Speaker 2: be right when he scores a touchdown, because he would
- 3:36Speaker 2: pop up off the ground and immediately be showing his
- 3:39Speaker 2: grill into a camera. It was so fantastic. And everyone
- 3:45Speaker 2: in the crowd was like, yeah, finally, like we're cheering
- 3:48Speaker 2: for him to succeed because he's so good. It was just,
- 3:52Speaker 2: the energy was awesome. You know, I will tell you this.
- 3:56Speaker 2: I called a pick before the game and I called
- 3:59Speaker 2: Carson Wentz three touchdowns. Not before the game, obviously, that
- 4:01Speaker 2: would be crazy. But once he went in, I was like,
- 4:05Speaker 2: I got him for three. And it was just, it was,
- 4:10Speaker 2: everything felt good. I will tell you, we went down
- 4:12Speaker 2: to the stadium. We, I got too close. That's my fault.
- 4:16Speaker 2: So I'm like, we're never going to find a parking spot.
- 4:18Speaker 2: And then we're at a red light and literally I
- 4:21Speaker 2: look over and there is a parking spot to the right.
- 4:24Speaker 2: All I have to do is hit reverse and do
- 4:26Speaker 2: the most perfect parallel park you've ever seen in your life.
- 4:28Speaker 2: And all of a sudden we're walking to the stadium.
- 4:30Speaker 2: So I go, this is a great omen. Let's get
- 4:32Speaker 2: in there. Let's see what happens.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Yeah. I think the good omen took a long time
- 4:37Speaker 1: to come to fruition. And it's, well, before I say that,
- 4:40Speaker 1: one more thing on Jefferson, uh, it kind of reminds
- 4:44Speaker 1: me the way, because it's interesting to hear you say
- 4:46Speaker 1: they had him on the big screen all the time
- 4:48Speaker 1: so you could see it in the stadium the way
- 4:50Speaker 1: we could see it at home, which makes me feel
- 4:52Speaker 1: like he does have a bit of WWE to him
- 4:56Speaker 1: where he truly understands, like not only is he top
- 5:00Speaker 1: of the league elite guy, but he understands how to
- 5:06Speaker 1: be the giant entertainment factor that is the headliner for
- 5:11Speaker 1: an organization and That's what I saw. It was like,
- 5:13Speaker 1: you might as well give this dude his own theme
- 5:15Speaker 1: music the way that game went. Let's start the first
- 5:20Speaker 1: quarter and midway into our first drive, you just hear
- 5:24Speaker 1: somebody go, by God, is that Justin Jefferson's theme music?
- 5:28Speaker 1: And he comes out of the tunnel late, runs right
- 5:31Speaker 1: up to the line because we only have 10 guys
- 5:34Speaker 1: on the field. Everybody's freaking out. They snap it and
- 5:36Speaker 1: immediately go deep to him. He has a cool WWE
- 5:40Speaker 1: energy right now.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Oh, there's no question. And it is, I mean, for
- 5:46Speaker 2: as long as the season must have been for him
- 5:48Speaker 2: last year, he was right in it and just giving
- 5:51Speaker 2: the fans what he knew we needed. And it, man,
- 5:56Speaker 2: what an absolute gem of a game.
- 5:59Speaker 1: It's kind of like Groundhog's Day situation, though, where last year, right,
- 6:03Speaker 1: week one, really tough game almost all the way through
- 6:08Speaker 1: its entirety. Then this unbelievable end. ever like I'm, I'm
- 6:12Speaker 1: like running around making proclamations about the future of the
- 6:16Speaker 1: organization that are unhinged. Right. Then we go to the,
- 6:22Speaker 1: we go to Atlanta and we come back down to
- 6:24Speaker 1: earth and the rest of the season goes the way
- 6:26Speaker 1: it went. Now this year, same thing through two and
- 6:29Speaker 1: a half, three quarters. You're like, man, I just, we
- 6:33Speaker 1: just can't get it. We're not, it's hard to get
- 6:35Speaker 1: over the hump. Unbelievable end. Now, you walk into a
- 6:41Speaker 1: much tougher week to opponent in the bears and a, right. A,
- 6:45Speaker 1: a larger potential reality check, but I'm really bullish on
- 6:51Speaker 1: this year as opposed to last. There are some things
- 6:54Speaker 1: that I saw in that game that make me, I mean,
- 6:57Speaker 1: this is going to be a really hard match, right? Obviously,
- 7:01Speaker 1: of course, but of course I'm very interested in seeing,
- 7:07Speaker 1: you know, which side of last game, is a more
- 7:10Speaker 1: realistic indication of who this team is. And I think
- 7:14Speaker 1: it's a really cool challenge that it's like, well, this is,
- 7:18Speaker 1: you get to see that against a team that a
- 7:19Speaker 1: lot of people think is in the Super Bowl mix
- 7:22Speaker 1: in the NFC.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I just kept saying we need to
- 7:26Speaker 2: get the jitters out. It just that's what it felt like,
- 7:29Speaker 2: you know, because preseason, you don't want people to get hurt.
- 7:32Speaker 2: You're not playing your starters a lot. So really, this
- 7:34Speaker 2: is like the first time they're going and taking big swings.
- 7:37Speaker 2: And It took that one play of the free play
- 7:41Speaker 2: where Wentz went deep and Jefferson made that huge catch.
- 7:44Speaker 2: And then now all of a sudden you have the defense,
- 7:47Speaker 2: you have Van Ginkle and you have Turner, and they
- 7:50Speaker 2: are just figuring out which hole to hit to hit
- 7:56Speaker 2: the quarterback and pressure the quarterback and cause fumbles and
- 7:58Speaker 2: all this stuff. And you could see it. And so
- 8:00Speaker 2: now you go with that momentum going into Chicago, right?
- 8:03Speaker 2: If you take the first The first half and the
- 8:06Speaker 2: first half of the third quarter of the last game,
- 8:08Speaker 2: and you send that team to Chicago, you go, well,
- 8:10Speaker 2: I don't know. But now you have all this momentum
- 8:13Speaker 2: of people making the right decision, and now they're taking
- 8:15Speaker 2: the chances that they needed to take. I am very
- 8:18Speaker 2: excited and very positive about them going into Soldier Field.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I have one Brian Flores take that I'm going to
- 8:24Speaker 1: give you in the game preview that I'm really excited
- 8:27Speaker 1: about to see if I can get you on board
- 8:29Speaker 1: with it. I'm calling it, it's a theory that I'm
- 8:32Speaker 1: developing today. But sweet Chad, before we get into our.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Game preview, I am so excited.
- 8:39Speaker 1: We are fortunate enough right now to be joined on
- 8:43Speaker 1: the line here on the tailgate by the great Jim McMahon. Jim,
- 8:47Speaker 1: I hope you're having a great day, man. Thank you
- 8:49Speaker 1: for joining us.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Yeah, no problem. I'm just starting my day. I'm out
- 8:53Speaker 3: on the West Coast or actually in Nevada. So just
- 8:56Speaker 3: starting out.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I got to ask you, for a guy who played
- 9:00Speaker 1: such incredible football, for the bears and who had such
- 9:04Speaker 1: a great season for us here with the Vikings. What does,
- 9:07Speaker 1: what does this week look like where the, you know,
- 9:10Speaker 1: the two teams that you spent, you know, significant moments
- 9:14Speaker 1: with play one another.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Well, I know the Vikings were always, you know, when
- 9:19Speaker 3: I was with the bears and, you know, we, we
- 9:21Speaker 3: had to beat the Vikings. You had to beat the
- 9:22Speaker 3: Packers in order to win that division. And when I
- 9:25Speaker 3: was with the Vikings, the same thing, you had to
- 9:26Speaker 3: beat the bears. You had to beat the Packers. And
- 9:29Speaker 3: so I'm sure they're, They're gearing up and taking this
- 9:32Speaker 3: pretty serious.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Jim, I remember watching a game. It was the Thursday
- 9:38Speaker 2: night edition of Monday Night Football. You have back injuries
- 9:42Speaker 2: all week or back problems all week. You talk Dick
- 9:45Speaker 2: into coming in, and you end up throwing three touchdowns
- 9:49Speaker 2: in seven minutes to beat the Vikings. I have to
- 9:52Speaker 2: tell you, I'm a Vikings fan, but it was interesting
- 9:54Speaker 2: watching other Vikings fans that week because they just had
- 9:59Speaker 2: dead eyes. eyes after that whooping.
- 10:02Speaker 3: It kind of worked out pretty well. I mean, Dick
- 10:05Speaker 3: was sure that I was not going to play. He
- 10:09Speaker 3: had told me that the day before. I was in
- 10:12Speaker 3: the hospital in traction on Monday and Tuesday. I got
- 10:15Speaker 3: out of the hospital on Wednesday. I went to practice.
- 10:20Speaker 3: And Dick has said, oh, you're not going to play.
- 10:23Speaker 3: And so we get to Minnesota that night. And then
- 10:28Speaker 3: the night of the game, I came out and I
- 10:30Speaker 3: was in pregame warmups. I was throwing the hell out
- 10:33Speaker 3: of the ball. And I told Mike, I said, look,
- 10:35Speaker 3: if you need me, I can play. And he said, no,
- 10:38Speaker 3: you didn't practice. Get out of here. You're not playing.
- 10:40Speaker 3: And so the way that game was going, I mean,
- 10:43Speaker 3: we were not doing anything. I mean, Tommy Kramer was
- 10:47Speaker 3: having a good night. He had him up a couple touchdowns,
- 10:52Speaker 3: and I kept telling Mike, look, he better put me
- 10:55Speaker 3: in the game. We're going to lose. We just weren't
- 10:59Speaker 3: the same team. I was watching our guys come off
- 11:01Speaker 3: the sidelines, and we were just not the same team
- 11:04Speaker 3: that we were the first two weeks. And we just
- 11:06Speaker 3: needed some kind of a spark. I mean, Steve Fuller
- 11:08Speaker 3: was not playing badly. It was just nothing was going on.
- 11:11Speaker 3: And I'm convinced to this day the only reason he
- 11:14Speaker 3: put me in the game was to get him out
- 11:15Speaker 3: of his face because I was bugging the hell out
- 11:17Speaker 3: of him.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:19Speaker 3: And then the first play that I'm in, he gave
- 11:24Speaker 3: me a call, which was supposed to be a screen
- 11:27Speaker 3: pass to our fullback off to the left. And I
- 11:31Speaker 3: actually called the play. I said, you know, I called
- 11:34Speaker 3: the screen. And then they came with an all-out blitz.
- 11:39Speaker 3: And I almost fell on my face, you know, coming
- 11:42Speaker 3: out from under the center. So I was a little wobbly.
- 11:45Speaker 3: And so when I read my balance– and planted my foot,
- 11:50Speaker 3: I just happened to look downfield and Willie was just
- 11:52Speaker 3: running his, he was just doing his job, running his
- 11:55Speaker 3: guy off because that's what you do on a screen,
- 11:57Speaker 3: take them deep. And he was 10 yards past his
- 12:00Speaker 3: guy and I just let it go. And, you know,
- 12:02Speaker 3: we scored and then we got the ball right back.
- 12:05Speaker 3: And then the next play was a bootleg and I'm
- 12:09Speaker 3: supposed to hit the back in the flat of the
- 12:11Speaker 3: tight end coming across the middle. And I had the back.
- 12:14Speaker 3: I had Walter open early, but I got a little greedy.
- 12:18Speaker 3: And I said, I think if I wait just a
- 12:20Speaker 3: little bit, I know I'm going to have my off receiver,
- 12:24Speaker 3: Dennis McKinnon, replace the weak safety. Because I used to
- 12:28Speaker 3: tell Dennis all the time, look, the only guy that
- 12:30Speaker 3: can stop this play is the weak safety if he
- 12:32Speaker 3: jumps the tight end. And that's what happened. He jumped
- 12:34Speaker 3: the tight end. And I never even saw Dennis. I
- 12:36Speaker 3: just knew he'd be there and threw it up. And
- 12:39Speaker 3: he was there and he scored again. And then the
- 12:42Speaker 3: other one a couple minutes later was just, you know,
- 12:46Speaker 3: I had, it was a, I think it was a
- 12:48Speaker 3: drop back pass. And I just kind of scooted out
- 12:50Speaker 3: to the left. I was getting pressure from the left side,
- 12:52Speaker 3: got around him and looked downfield. And there was Dennis
- 12:55Speaker 3: again behind his guy. And I threw it and the
- 12:58Speaker 3: rest was history. But yeah, that night worked out pretty well.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd say so.
- 13:04Speaker 1: You know, I've been lucky to spend a bunch of
- 13:06Speaker 1: time with Fran Tarkenton and a little time with Brett Favre. And,
- 13:09Speaker 1: you know, both those guys have that same thing in
- 13:11Speaker 1: them that you just described, which is I don't care.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Like when the game turns on, however I felt, I
- 13:17Speaker 1: don't feel anymore. Put me in, put me in, put
- 13:20Speaker 1: me in. Like, how did that come to be? Because
- 13:23Speaker 1: you're kind of famous for that. You played through a
- 13:25Speaker 1: bunch of stuff. Like, do you think you just had
- 13:27Speaker 1: a high pain tolerance? Do you think it was uber
- 13:30Speaker 1: competitive nature? What was that mentality and where did it
- 13:33Speaker 1: come from?
- 13:34Speaker 3: Well, it was definitely, I've got a high pain tolerance.
- 13:36Speaker 3: I mean, I've, I've been having a lot of pain
- 13:39Speaker 3: since my early childhood. So I'm kind of used to it. Uh,
- 13:42Speaker 3: but game day comes, I want to play. I hated practice,
- 13:45Speaker 3: never did like practice. Uh, it's just not the same.
- 13:49Speaker 3: It's like, it's like in golf out there, guys out
- 13:51Speaker 3: hitting balls all day long. You know, I said, it
- 13:54Speaker 3: doesn't matter how many balls you hit. If you can't
- 13:56Speaker 3: hit it, you know, when you tee it up. Right.
- 13:58Speaker 3: I've always just, I've been looking forward to games and
- 14:01Speaker 3: I want to play.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Well, after that night, I will tell you that a
- 14:05Speaker 2: bunch of kids in northern Minnesota showed up to football
- 14:08Speaker 2: practice with headbands on because we were just blown away
- 14:12Speaker 2: by that performance.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Well, it was a great night. I mean, it worked
- 14:16Speaker 3: out great anyway. But yeah, that was fun.
- 14:20Speaker 1: You and Ditka seemed to have a fun but complicated
- 14:25Speaker 1: relationship over the years. And Ditka always said football should
- 14:30Speaker 1: be played on grass, right? and the Metrodome should be
- 14:33Speaker 1: used for a roller skating rink, right? I think he
- 14:36Speaker 1: had a certain way of looking at the game, and
- 14:39Speaker 1: you had a certain way of looking at the game.
- 14:42Speaker 1: What was that relationship at its core like, especially when
- 14:46Speaker 1: you guys were at the height of your height?
- 14:48Speaker 3: Well, I was bored to death with that offense because
- 14:51Speaker 3: I had just come from Brigham Young where I got
- 14:53Speaker 3: to throw it 35 times and a half. When I
- 14:57Speaker 3: was with Chicago, it took me like two or three
- 15:00Speaker 3: games to throw it 35 times. And so I was
- 15:04Speaker 3: really bored to death. We just had a different opinion
- 15:07Speaker 3: on how to get things done. He wanted to run
- 15:09Speaker 3: the ball, control the clock. I said, we can do
- 15:12Speaker 3: that by throwing the ball as well. Why can't I
- 15:16Speaker 3: throw Walter the ball from seven yards around? Because I
- 15:21Speaker 3: can tell what the defense is doing to me. And
- 15:23Speaker 3: if I saw man-to-man, I said, why can't I just
- 15:25Speaker 3: audible to a little halfback options route? There's not a
- 15:29Speaker 3: linebacker in the league that can cover Walter. And he said, no,
- 15:33Speaker 3: we're going to run the ball. We're going to, you know,
- 15:36Speaker 3: so we, we clashed the whole seven years that I
- 15:38Speaker 3: was there because of the, the way the offense was
- 15:41Speaker 3: and the way he liked to call plays.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Sure.
- 15:44Speaker 3: And you know, Mike, I told him many times, I
- 15:46Speaker 3: would have loved to play with him because he was
- 15:47Speaker 3: a great football player, played the game the way it's
- 15:50Speaker 3: supposed to be played. It was a great tight end. And,
- 15:53Speaker 3: but I said, you know, I just don't, I don't
- 15:55Speaker 3: understand why you, you want to beat your head against
- 15:57Speaker 3: the wall when you don't have to.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. So, so, Playing for a team like Chicago,
- 16:04Speaker 2: there's all these expectations from the fans and everything. Did
- 16:07Speaker 2: you ever feel like there was a moment where that
- 16:09Speaker 2: got out of hand for you?
- 16:11Speaker 3: What got out of hand?
- 16:13Speaker 2: The pressure and the expectations from everybody.
- 16:16Speaker 3: I didn't worry about pressure. Pressure's for tires. You're out
- 16:20Speaker 3: there playing a game. I knew what I was capable of.
- 16:23Speaker 3: I knew what our guys were capable of. Our guys,
- 16:27Speaker 3: especially my line, they understood that I understood the game.
- 16:32Speaker 3: You know, I wasn't doing things just to piss off
- 16:34Speaker 3: Mike Ditka. I was trying to win football games. You know,
- 16:37Speaker 3: and Mike, like I said, he was a tight end,
- 16:38Speaker 3: but that's how he called plays, like a tight end.
- 16:41Speaker 3: He had no idea how to, you know, set up
- 16:44Speaker 3: the runs and the passes. You don't run a play-action
- 16:47Speaker 3: pass without running the play first. I mean, you've got
- 16:50Speaker 3: to set things up. And so, you know, I didn't
- 16:54Speaker 3: care if he was going to be mad at me
- 16:55Speaker 3: or not. You know, we're winning the game. That's all
- 16:57Speaker 3: I worried about.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Mm-hmm. Yeah, well, you had such a highly decorated college career.
- 17:03Speaker 1: You mentioned it at BYU. And then, you know, you
- 17:07Speaker 1: were such a high profile guy on one of the
- 17:09Speaker 1: flashiest teams in NFL history. Like, where did that kind
- 17:14Speaker 1: of outward persona come from? Where did that like character
- 17:18Speaker 1: that you brought, not just the skills that you had,
- 17:20Speaker 1: but kind of the charm and liveliness you brought to
- 17:23Speaker 1: the field's most important position? Where did that come from?
- 17:27Speaker 3: I always like to have fun. No matter what I'm doing,
- 17:31Speaker 3: I want to have a good time doing it. Why
- 17:33Speaker 3: do it if you can't have any fun at it?
- 17:36Speaker 3: Being in our practices and our meetings, they were not fun.
- 17:40Speaker 3: I try to do things to make guys laugh and
- 17:44Speaker 3: take some pressure off of them. It kind of worked.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Yeah, were you guys kind of a yin and yang
- 17:50Speaker 1: in that way, where you think about the Herb Brooks
- 17:53Speaker 1: teams and some of these other things? With the structure,
- 17:55Speaker 1: it's almost like as much structure as Ditka brought, you
- 17:58Speaker 1: were the guy that brought the joy and the fun,
- 18:00Speaker 1: and that probably balanced things out for all the other guys.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Well, I know they all kind of enjoyed Mike being
- 18:07Speaker 3: mad at me. Because they knew I didn't care. I mean,
- 18:13Speaker 3: if he's going to be mad at me, fine. you know,
- 18:16Speaker 3: if you don't want me to hear trade me. And
- 18:18Speaker 3: eventually they did. We had a good, we had a
- 18:22Speaker 3: good five year run before they got rid of me.
- 18:24Speaker 3: For sure.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:25Speaker 2: You guys were a very flashy team. You think about
- 18:28Speaker 2: the Superbowl shuffle was, did you guys push back on
- 18:31Speaker 2: that at all? Or did you embrace it and just
- 18:33Speaker 2: really go into that video shoot loving it?
- 18:36Speaker 3: Well, I didn't go to the video shoot.
- 18:38Speaker 1: I did.
- 18:39Speaker 3: What happened was they came to us with this idea
- 18:42Speaker 3: that we're going to do this record, right? That's all
- 18:45Speaker 3: they told us. We're going to make a record. And
- 18:47Speaker 3: then the proceeds would feed the homeless on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Cause we did this thing with, I think with four
- 18:52Speaker 3: games left in the season. And so we thought it
- 18:55Speaker 3: would be a good thing for Chicago. You know, we
- 18:57Speaker 3: just thought it was going to be a local thing.
- 19:00Speaker 3: And then as soon as we all did our speaking parts,
- 19:02Speaker 3: I mean, it went nationwide and then they did end
- 19:06Speaker 3: up taping the video the day after we lost our
- 19:09Speaker 3: only game that year, you know, we lose down in
- 19:11Speaker 3: Miami on a Monday night. We get home at three
- 19:15Speaker 3: or four in the morning, something like that. And the
- 19:17Speaker 3: guys had to be at the studio at eight or
- 19:20Speaker 3: nine in the morning. They were there, I think, for
- 19:21Speaker 3: 10 hours. But Walter Payton and I both told him, look,
- 19:26Speaker 3: that wasn't the deal. He said, we're going to make
- 19:28Speaker 3: a record. That's what we did. And so him and
- 19:31Speaker 3: I didn't go to the video shoot. And so about
- 19:34Speaker 3: a week after they did the video, the people in
- 19:38Speaker 3: charge came to us and said, if you don't do
- 19:40Speaker 3: your parts, we're going to sue you. I said, this
- 19:42Speaker 3: was supposed to be a charity thing, and you're going
- 19:44Speaker 3: to sue us? I mean, this is ridiculous. And so
- 19:47Speaker 3: Walter and I had to do our parts after practice.
- 19:50Speaker 3: one day in the racquetball court at house hall. So
- 19:52Speaker 3: what you saw up there was a couple of pissed
- 19:54Speaker 3: off guys doing whatever we did. And then, you know,
- 19:57Speaker 3: it went, it went crazy.
- 19:59Speaker 2: I mean, we, you know, we got a gold record, gold.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Record, a platinum video, and we lost the Grammy to
- 20:04Speaker 3: Prince that year. So another Minnesota connection.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, that's wild.
- 20:11Speaker 1: What an all-time origin story. Think of how famous that
- 20:16Speaker 1: thing is in the lexicon of NFL media. And the
- 20:19Speaker 1: fact that it was a rope-a-dope, that you guys got...
- 20:22Speaker 1: You were told you were feeding the poor, and all
- 20:24Speaker 1: of a sudden they had you dancing about the Super Bowl.
- 20:26Speaker 1: That's incredible. I've never heard that.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Well, what's really incredible is how long it lasted. Because
- 20:32Speaker 2: in 1991, I got beaten for a touchdown.
- 20:37Speaker 2: On the field and the opposing quarterback came by me
- 20:41Speaker 2: and said, I just throw my body all over the field.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I can't dance, but I can throw the pill. He
- 20:46Speaker 2: quoted you in Super Bowl Shuffle to rub it in
- 20:49Speaker 2: my face. Unbelievable.
- 20:52Speaker 3: People still talk about it everywhere I go.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 20:55Speaker 3: The song comes up and I mean, at the time,
- 20:59Speaker 3: I guess it was pretty cool.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Let me tell you something. There are a lot of
- 21:02Speaker 1: things in the 80s that aged way worse than the
- 21:04Speaker 1: Super Bowl Shuffle. That is for sure. I got to
- 21:09Speaker 1: ask you one more Superbowl question before I get your
- 21:11Speaker 1: quick thoughts on the game this week. The, the other
- 21:16Speaker 1: thing that, you know, is pretty unique in the lexicon
- 21:19Speaker 1: of NFL history is handing the ball off to William,
- 21:23Speaker 1: the refrigerator Perry and letting him erupt into an end
- 21:28Speaker 1: zone or get it. Like where, where did that come from?
- 21:32Speaker 1: And again, Was there like an energy when all of
- 21:35Speaker 1: a sudden you saw him rumbling from the sideline into–
- 21:40Speaker 1: I know you like to pass, but that's probably one
- 21:42Speaker 1: of the most unique running plays in league history.
- 21:46Speaker 3: Well, that all came about because in 1984 in the
- 21:51Speaker 3: NFC Championship game, I think with about five minutes left
- 21:54Speaker 3: in the game, Bill Walsh put Guy McIntyre, who was
- 21:57Speaker 3: their starting left guard, I think, in the backfield, and
- 22:00Speaker 3: they ran it down our throats for the last five minutes.
- 22:03Speaker 3: And so the only reason that came about is Dick
- 22:06Speaker 3: had wanted to get back at Bill Walsh. And so
- 22:10Speaker 3: we went back out to San Francisco the very next year,
- 22:13Speaker 3: and we beat him up pretty good. And late in
- 22:17Speaker 3: the game, here comes Fridge. And that was only just
- 22:20Speaker 3: to kind of stick it to Bill. I think Fridge
- 22:24Speaker 3: got a yard or something on that play. But, I mean,
- 22:27Speaker 3: he was actually a heck of an athlete. I mean,
- 22:30Speaker 3: how do you tackle the guy? He was basically round.
- 22:33Speaker 3: And he was huge. And he had a lot of pop.
- 22:37Speaker 3: I mean, he could, the sound that it made when
- 22:40Speaker 3: he hit guys, I mean, it was incredible. And he
- 22:43Speaker 3: was a heck of an athlete. You know, I ended
- 22:45Speaker 3: up throwing him a touchdown pass up in Green Bay
- 22:47Speaker 3: a few weeks later. Or maybe it might have been
- 22:49Speaker 3: the following year. But yeah, he was a big part
- 22:51Speaker 3: of the offense. And then in the super bowl, he
- 22:54Speaker 3: was supposed to even throw a pass. Really? Yeah. We actually,
- 22:57Speaker 3: we actually called the play too. And, and when I,
- 23:00Speaker 3: when I tossed him the ball, I'm looking at the
- 23:02Speaker 3: defense going, Oh God, don't don't throw it. Cause I'm
- 23:05Speaker 3: going to have to go chase somebody for an interception.
- 23:07Speaker 3: He did end up not throwing it and got, got
- 23:10Speaker 3: tackled for loss. But yeah, it became kind of a,
- 23:13Speaker 3: kind of a zoo after that.
- 23:14Speaker 1: God, can you imagine if he'd have thrown a pass
- 23:18Speaker 1: that was successful in the super bowl? Holy cow. The,
- 23:21Speaker 1: this football world would have gone insane.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Yeah. But Fridge was a heck of an athlete.
- 23:27Speaker 1: For sure. Let's, well, let's close on this. We really
- 23:30Speaker 1: appreciate your time, but, you know, and the walk down
- 23:34Speaker 1: a memory lane is really fun. What do you think
- 23:37Speaker 1: looking forward instead of back? What do you, what do
- 23:40Speaker 1: you think about this week? You know what they're doing
- 23:43Speaker 1: in Chicago and, you know, with Caleb and Ben and
- 23:47Speaker 1: what the Vikings are walking into?
- 23:49Speaker 3: You know, I know Chicago is doing great. They've got
- 23:51Speaker 3: a lot of talent. Caleb is a heck of a
- 23:54Speaker 3: talent as well. They put up a bunch of points.
- 23:56Speaker 3: I didn't see any of the game, but I see
- 23:58Speaker 3: they put up a bunch of points last week. I
- 24:01Speaker 3: think Ben Johnson, he seems to be a heck of
- 24:04Speaker 3: a coach. Guys like him. Guys like to play for him. So, yeah,
- 24:09Speaker 3: it should be a good season either way.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Well, Jim, we really appreciate it, man. This was a
- 24:15Speaker 1: thrill for us. Thank you for being a part of
- 24:17Speaker 1: the tailgate.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you.
- 24:19Speaker 3: No problem. Good luck this week.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Thank you. Have a good one.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Thanks again to Jim McMahon for joining us. I have
- 24:27Speaker 1: to tell you now that he's no longer on the phone.
- 24:29Speaker 1: That was outrageous. That was the fact that the team
- 24:33Speaker 1: let us talk to him, which I thought was a
- 24:36Speaker 1: mistake before we started.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Still kind of do. But man, that was what we
- 24:41Speaker 1: in the business call a thrill chatty.
- 24:43Speaker 2: I know you can't see it right now, but I
- 24:45Speaker 2: have one person on each side of me ready to
- 24:48Speaker 2: punch me in the face if I ruin that interview.
- 24:50Speaker 2: So I was on my best behavior, but that was
- 24:53Speaker 2: so much fun. I mean, go back to your childhood.
- 24:56Speaker 2: And then I love the fact that talking about the
- 25:00Speaker 2: Thursday night game, he just still every step, right? He's
- 25:05Speaker 2: talking about moving to the left and he gets pressured
- 25:08Speaker 2: from the left and has to get around. I mean,
- 25:09Speaker 2: he's just like, it is just ingrained.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Also, how about a couple of absurd origin stories? The
- 25:16Speaker 1: This is why the fridge play started. We were going
- 25:22Speaker 1: to throw it. And oh, by the way, we got
- 25:24Speaker 1: tricked into doing the Super Bowl shuffle. Unbelievable.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Yeah, so cool. That was really fun to hear that
- 25:31Speaker 2: stuff because I wouldn't have known. I thought that Ditka
- 25:33Speaker 2: came up with the fridge running and I didn't know
- 25:38Speaker 2: it was complete revenge. And then I also didn't know
- 25:42Speaker 2: that their scenes were shot in different spots.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Unbelievable. I would have never, for the technology back then,
- 25:48Speaker 1: I would have never guessed that. I would have kept
- 25:50Speaker 1: going like, well, then where'd you do it? You mean
- 25:52Speaker 1: to tell me they green screened you? But technology was
- 25:55Speaker 1: so wonky back then, they probably did it and you
- 25:58Speaker 1: wouldn't have even noticed. Well, that brings us up to current.
- 26:05Speaker 1: We'll move from him looking back to us looking forward.
- 26:09Speaker 1: You know, this game, historically in our lifetime, like, adult
- 26:15Speaker 1: lifetime since we've, you know, been grown. I got, I,
- 26:19Speaker 1: I do not look forward to that game. I don't
- 26:21Speaker 1: want to be a part of it. That's just always lingered.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Now you have that plus, Oh boy, there's, they're.
- 26:28Speaker 2: A good football team.
- 26:29Speaker 1: I mean, they put up 59 points last week. Ben
- 26:33Speaker 1: Johnson is on the record saying he wants to break
- 26:37Speaker 1: the all time scoring record. Uh, this is going to
- 26:41Speaker 1: be a really interesting Ben Johnson, uh, Flores moment and
- 26:46Speaker 1: I have let me tell you no idea how it's
- 26:50Speaker 1: gonna go not I don't even you know how I'm
- 26:53Speaker 1: cocky all the time and then I'm the other way
- 26:56Speaker 1: when it doesn't go like of course.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Yeah you're wishy-washy I have well I listen.
- 27:00Speaker 1: That's a different way of saying it I guess I would.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Like to say that you again you are talking about
- 27:07Speaker 2: a defense in Carolina that that didn't play a lot
- 27:12Speaker 2: in the preseason this is the first game right so
- 27:15Speaker 2: It's not like everybody's, all the starters are winding up.
- 27:18Speaker 2: And so now that we, now that we got our game,
- 27:22Speaker 2: I'm going to, you know what, I'm going to call
- 27:23Speaker 2: it a practice game. Now that we got our practice
- 27:25Speaker 2: game and our defense, our defense.
- 27:27Speaker 1: We got our practice game against green Bay. We got
- 27:29Speaker 1: the rust out against the green Bay team that didn't
- 27:33Speaker 1: beat us. Yep.
- 27:34Speaker 2: I think, I think every team is going to look
- 27:36Speaker 2: significantly different in week two because it is, you know,
- 27:39Speaker 2: you have to get going. But I think our defense
- 27:42Speaker 2: looked great. Yes, there were some over-the-middle catches at the
- 27:45Speaker 2: end of the game, but those are garbage time stats.
- 27:48Speaker 2: And I'm just really looking forward to it. And I
- 27:52Speaker 2: think Caleb's going to get hit a lot more than
- 27:55Speaker 2: he did last game. I think this is going to
- 27:58Speaker 2: be just different. Any time you come to the black
- 28:01Speaker 2: and blue division, it is going to feel different. And
- 28:05Speaker 2: I think they're thinking they're going to swim through this
- 28:07Speaker 2: thing again and score another– 50 plus no chance. It
- 28:10Speaker 2: was also of.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Note that it was 31, 31 at some point in
- 28:14Speaker 1: that game. And the bears just kept sprinting and put points.
- 28:18Speaker 2: On the board.
- 28:18Speaker 1: You know, the, the, the evolution of the Flores Ben Johnson, when,
- 28:25Speaker 1: when Ben was in Detroit, you know, they clearly got
- 28:29Speaker 1: the best of us a couple of times and really
- 28:30Speaker 1: took advantage of the defense. But if you look at
- 28:33Speaker 1: last year, You know, the opening week and even that
- 28:36Speaker 1: later in the season game, it's not like they put
- 28:38Speaker 1: up a lot of points. You know, I think what
- 28:42Speaker 1: Flores does, so here's the theory I was poorly teasing
- 28:47Speaker 1: before we got to the game preview. I think there
- 28:52Speaker 1: is a, let's call it a psychological chaos factor. So,
- 29:00Speaker 1: you know when defenses, excuse me, when offenses, it's like,
- 29:04Speaker 1: You keep running it. You keep running it because eventually
- 29:06Speaker 1: it'll break. You run it, run it, run it, run it,
- 29:09Speaker 1: run it. And then in the fourth quarter, they're wore
- 29:11Speaker 1: down and boom, you crack one. Boom, you crack one
- 29:14Speaker 1: and you break them. It's almost like what Flores does
- 29:19Speaker 1: sometimes is the defensive version of that.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:22Speaker 1: And granted, we really needed some things to go our
- 29:24Speaker 1: way against Green Bay. But when the dam broke, all
- 29:28Speaker 1: of a sudden, boom, sack, boom, fumble, fumble. It was like,
- 29:34Speaker 1: we've been hitting you all day and it broke through.
- 29:36Speaker 1: And now, no matter what they've seen in the past.
- 29:41Speaker 1: the Bears and Ben Johnson and Caleb have to look
- 29:46Speaker 1: at the tape and go, oh, even though Jordan Love
- 29:51Speaker 1: is big and rangy and can move and is really
- 29:54Speaker 1: successful against the Blitz and never takes a sack, They
- 29:58Speaker 1: brought it 73% of the time. 73! So there was
- 30:05Speaker 1: this great, before the Packers game, former Viking Javon Hargrave,
- 30:11Speaker 1: who plays for the Packers now, was basically asked by
- 30:14Speaker 1: a reporter, hey, you played in this defense. Are you
- 30:17Speaker 1: going to be able to give a little bit of
- 30:18Speaker 1: the secrets, some of the cheat codes? And Hargrave kind
- 30:22Speaker 1: of just laughed. He's like, there's no cheat codes. Jordan
- 30:25Speaker 1: Love knows what's coming.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Right.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Like that's so that's the thing. It's this no matter
- 30:30Speaker 1: if they show blitz all day and then drop back
- 30:33Speaker 1: and play coverage, you can't count on that. No matter
- 30:36Speaker 1: how good this offense is, I think I'm just hoping
- 30:38Speaker 1: that in the back of Caleb's mind, the psychological factor
- 30:42Speaker 1: of Flores being on the other sideline really matters.
- 30:45Speaker 2: It is a real guessing game when you're playing against
- 30:48Speaker 2: this defense. I mean, you know, they give you one lineup,
- 30:53Speaker 2: show you one thing. all of a sudden it's not
- 30:55Speaker 2: even close to what you thought. And so I think
- 30:58Speaker 2: it's going to be great, and I think it's going
- 31:01Speaker 2: to take one big hit, and I think Caleb is
- 31:04Speaker 2: going to remember that, and I think it's going to
- 31:06Speaker 2: affect the rest.
- 31:08Speaker 1: We don't, although I think a lot of people believe
- 31:10Speaker 1: he might be out for a while. As of this recording,
- 31:14Speaker 1: we don't have updates on Kyler Murray. I think a
- 31:17Speaker 1: lot of people are anticipating Carson Wentz, who, you know,
- 31:22Speaker 1: I had some big moments and clearly as, you know,
- 31:25Speaker 1: it makes sense, had some rust moments as well, given,
- 31:31Speaker 1: you know, the way the off season went like that.
- 31:34Speaker 1: I think that makes a lot of sense. This is
- 31:35Speaker 1: a big spot.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:37Speaker 1: You know, and he's a guy who historically can make
- 31:43Speaker 1: a lot of throws that a lot of other people can't.
- 31:47Speaker 1: And then, you know, can get a little wild with
- 31:49Speaker 1: it at times. And I, One of the big things
- 31:52Speaker 1: I'm watching is the stats for KOC. When this team
- 31:56Speaker 1: doesn't lose the turnover battle. So in this game against
- 32:03Speaker 1: with a defense that isn't as good as the one
- 32:05Speaker 1: we saw last week. But still is going to have
- 32:09Speaker 1: to keep up. Can the two of those guys, if
- 32:12Speaker 1: it is Wentz. Can KOC and Wentz kind of meld
- 32:16Speaker 1: and keep the wild moments down for Wentz. and keep
- 32:20Speaker 1: the good moments up, be low turnover and take advantage
- 32:24Speaker 1: of some situations. And you, you, you might put yourself
- 32:28Speaker 1: in a really good situation. I know, I know you're
- 32:30Speaker 1: a long time Wentz guy, so you got to be
- 32:33Speaker 1: curious how this goes.
- 32:35Speaker 2: I think it's going to be interesting too. However, if
- 32:37Speaker 2: they're like, these guys are watching game film, right? And
- 32:41Speaker 2: they are seeing Hawkinson and they're seeing Jefferson and they're
- 32:46Speaker 2: seeing the running backs. What they're not seeing is Addison.
- 32:49Speaker 2: Addison is, is still a humongous factor in this new
- 32:54Speaker 2: passing game if Wentz starts. So we're going to be
- 32:57Speaker 2: able to come out and still surprise them.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Bears are currently five and a half point favorites. They
- 33:02Speaker 1: are at home going into week two here. Let's do
- 33:07Speaker 1: player prediction, game prediction, personal prediction. Are we booting the
- 33:13Speaker 1: game prediction? We both hate the game prediction. We don't
- 33:16Speaker 1: like it.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, unless we want to go actually instead
- 33:21Speaker 2: of this fantastic thing. I just don't like.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Predicting, and then I'm wrong, and I feel like I
- 33:29Speaker 1: caused it, which is irrational, my therapist said.
- 33:32Speaker 2: I'll tell you this. The last prediction, you said that
- 33:34Speaker 2: Jefferson was going to have a huge game.
- 33:35Speaker 1: He did.
- 33:36Speaker 2: I said Hitman was going to have a pick. I mean,
- 33:38Speaker 2: tip drill. I'm going to give him the assist.
- 33:41Speaker 1: I think we focus on the thing we're amazing at
- 33:43Speaker 1: is telling you, Who might show up big time? So
- 33:47Speaker 1: let's do player prediction, and let's just.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Keep it there. Okay, I'm going to go Dallas Turner,
- 33:57Speaker 2: four hurries, two sacks.
- 33:59Speaker 1: No!
- 33:59Speaker 2: Four hurries, two sacks.
- 34:00Speaker 1: That was mine. That's the one I wrote down.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Too bad.
- 34:04Speaker 3: Too bad.
- 34:04Speaker 2: You let me go first.
- 34:06Speaker 1: It'll be really interesting to see if Dallas Turner can
- 34:08Speaker 1: follow up his week one performance. I mean, he was
- 34:12Speaker 1: a monster.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Like, for everybody who was worried about replacing that spot, boy, oh, boy,
- 34:19Speaker 1: this guy is, he's ready, I think.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it took a while to turn it on, but
- 34:24Speaker 2: when he did, I mean, come on.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Okay, so if you're taking Dallas Turner, so let me
- 34:30Speaker 1: throw a couple of statistics at you.
- 34:31Speaker 2: Okay.
- 34:33Speaker 1: The Vikings ran the ball 27 times while trailing last week.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 34:40Speaker 1: That is the second highest in the KOC era.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 34:44Speaker 1: Behind a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars when Sam Darnold
- 34:50Speaker 1: was the quarterback. They're also, they had six short yardage
- 34:54Speaker 1: plays in the game, two yards or less, ran on
- 34:59Speaker 1: all six of them. A couple of them, second and short,
- 35:03Speaker 1: didn't get it, ran again on third and short. I'm
- 35:07Speaker 1: loving the commitment to the run game. So that's where
- 35:10Speaker 1: I'm going to keep it. I think this is going
- 35:12Speaker 1: to be a higher scoring game But I think you're
- 35:18Speaker 1: going to see a big performance from the combined running
- 35:23Speaker 1: backs at large. And hopefully if the game gets tilted
- 35:27Speaker 1: the right way, a big number because you're really controlling
- 35:30Speaker 1: the game. So that's the one I'm going to go with.
- 35:32Speaker 2: I love it.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Are you going to go to Chicago? You were at
- 35:36Speaker 1: our first win. I don't know that you're the good
- 35:37Speaker 1: luck charm, but you were at our first win. Were
- 35:40Speaker 1: you watching this one?
- 35:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not going to. Unfortunately, I am. taking the
- 35:46Speaker 2: earliest flight out of LAX to get home to watch
- 35:50Speaker 2: this thing. So I will be at home most likely pacing.
- 35:55Speaker 1: That is a early, early, early flight to get from
- 36:01Speaker 1: LA back in time for a noon kickoff.
- 36:04Speaker 2: It's an hour drive to get there at 5 a.m.
- 36:07Speaker 2: So we shall see how I.
- 36:11Speaker 1: Do.
- 36:11Speaker 2: I will not be watching the 3 o'clock games. I
- 36:13Speaker 2: will be sleeping.
- 36:15Speaker 1: All right. All right, all right. Thanks again to the
- 36:17Speaker 1: great Jim McMahon for joining Chad and I here on
- 36:21Speaker 1: the show.
- 36:21Speaker 2: No kidding. That was so fun.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Thank you, Chad, as always, for being here this week.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Thank you to all of you for listening to our
- 36:28Speaker 1: podcast feed. While you're here, make sure you give us
- 36:31Speaker 1: a good review. It sure would help us out a lot. Finally,
- 36:33Speaker 1: a huge shout-out to Ticketmaster, the official ticket marketplace of
- 36:37Speaker 1: the Minnesota Vikings, for helping make this show happen. Enjoy
- 36:41Speaker 1: the game, everybody.
