- 0:39SPEAKER_07: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_07: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez.
- 0:43SPEAKER_07: My co-host Tristan McGonagall is here.
- 0:46SPEAKER_07: Tristan, did you enjoy the bye week?
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: I did, dude.
- 0:50SPEAKER_04: I actually got some honeydews done.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: The folks came in.
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: We watched some football with zero anxiety.
- 0:57SPEAKER_04: I mean, after all, this was the weekend of the overtime.
- 0:59SPEAKER_04: So there was a lot of fun to be had.
- 1:02SPEAKER_07: That is true.
- 1:03SPEAKER_07: It was a fun football weekend.
- 1:05SPEAKER_07: Uh, I got to watch a decent amount of it.
- 1:08SPEAKER_07: The unfortunately, I was up in Dallas for work, so I had some work stuff to do on Saturday, but I did get to catch a good portion of the early games.
- 1:17SPEAKER_07: Saw my guy Sorsby pull it out against the Kansas Jayhawks.
- 1:22SPEAKER_07: Then I got to see the late night games, kind of at least the second half, and saw, you know, uh Oregon, Penn State, and uh and Bama, Georgia.
- 1:32SPEAKER_07: So it was pretty good football week, I'd say.
- 1:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, dude, absolutely.
- 1:36SPEAKER_04: And you know, funny enough, I just I brought up the overtime mayhem and Steven.
- 1:42SPEAKER_04: The team we are discussing today also went into was a part of that overtime mayhem.
- 1:48SPEAKER_04: And to their credit, it was a dogfight between two evenly matched teams up there in Corballas, Oregon.
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: So I I don't want to give them too hard of a time, but I think we should definitely run through some Big 12 scores and status update on the league as we move forward here because uh, of course, all we got to talk about today is indeed that Houston matchup that we got set up here on Saturday.
- 2:13SPEAKER_07: Yeah, so I guess we can start with that.
- 2:16SPEAKER_07: Let's start with Friday.
- 2:18SPEAKER_07: Great day, great day of football.
- 2:20SPEAKER_07: We saw first off Virginia upset Florida State, but then we saw in the Big 12 Arizona State TCU, two of the top dogs in this conference this year.
- 2:30SPEAKER_07: What were your thoughts after that one?
- 2:32SPEAKER_04: Uh I I it was good to see Arizona State get right.
- 2:35SPEAKER_04: You know, we were kind of wondering if perhaps they uh were kind of a more of a shadow of what they were last year, but it looks like they're starting to turn the corner here and put together a good team.
- 2:44SPEAKER_04: And obviously, I'm going to prefer to see Arizona State beat TCU than the other way around.
- 2:50SPEAKER_04: So it was good to see that happen.
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: And I mean, it does make you know sweat a little bit because we do have to go to Timpee this year.
- 2:57SPEAKER_04: So we will be playing against that Arizona State team that we saw uh take down the Frogs.
- 3:03SPEAKER_04: Uh the Frogs were looking hot too because a lot of people were picking them to uh perhaps win the conference this year.
- 3:08SPEAKER_04: Not that I can't happen still, but it really looks like that uh uh Arizona State is firmly more so in that discussion than the Frogs.
- 3:15SPEAKER_04: What did you think?
- 3:16SPEAKER_07: Well, I honestly I thought despite the TCU turnovers late, Hoover made a couple of mistakes, but I overall I thought both these teams were what's that?
- 3:27SPEAKER_07: The furry yeah, the furry Josh Hoover, that that poor guy, just got completely demolished in the offseason by SMU fans, called him a furry, and uh it's just gonna stick.
- 3:41SPEAKER_07: It has no truth to it, but it's just gonna stick.
- 3:43SPEAKER_07: It's one of those things.
- 3:44SPEAKER_07: We love to see it.
- 3:45SPEAKER_07: Um, I thought I thought Arizona State, they're they're kind of, I don't want to say they're a one-trick pony because Sam Levitt is a good quarterback.
- 3:57SPEAKER_07: He definitely, you can tell, has trouble going through his progressions.
- 4:01SPEAKER_07: He kind of puts his eye on one guy, and if it doesn't happen, then he kind of maneuvers his way out of it, and he's fantastic at that, by the way.
- 4:09SPEAKER_07: Great scrambler, gets himself out of crazy situations and makes some plays happen.
- 4:14SPEAKER_07: But Jordan Tyson's kind of his only guy, and he's phenomenal.
- 4:18SPEAKER_07: Don't get me wrong, one of the best receivers in the country right now.
- 4:21SPEAKER_07: But I don't know.
- 4:23SPEAKER_07: I don't trust Arizona State, I don't trust their defense.
- 4:26SPEAKER_07: I don't really trust Sam Levitt to make a good play if you take Tyson out of it.
- 4:31SPEAKER_07: It's uh I don't know.
- 4:33SPEAKER_07: I I came out of that game actually a little more high on TCU than I did Arizona State.
- 4:38SPEAKER_07: Quality loss.
- 4:39SPEAKER_07: Quality loss.
- 4:39SPEAKER_07: I it's a quality loss, but it wasn't Tempe.
- 4:43SPEAKER_07: So I don't know.
- 4:44SPEAKER_07: I think I think both these teams are pretty pretty even still.
- 4:48SPEAKER_04: Stephen, more importantly, with Stan Levitt, what were your thoughts on his comments post game?
- 4:54SPEAKER_07: He's so goofy, dude.
- 4:57SPEAKER_04: He wouldn't have a heartbeat because he's cold-blooded.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: I don't know if the young man understands how biology works.
- 5:04SPEAKER_04: That's not that's not what cold-blooded means.
- 5:06SPEAKER_04: It doesn't mean you don't have a heartbeat.
- 5:08SPEAKER_04: It means your metabolism doesn't warm your blood right now.
- 5:12SPEAKER_07: Sam Levin is Twitter as a person.
- 5:15SPEAKER_07: He's just the guy, he's he's your typical football player recruit on Twitter, just in person, in real life.
- 5:21SPEAKER_07: He's he's that character.
- 5:23SPEAKER_07: So yeah, that was tough.
- 5:24SPEAKER_07: That was a tough uh sound bite.
- 5:27SPEAKER_04: Brother has a can in uh of an arm, though.
- 5:29SPEAKER_04: Like he's great thing, dude.
- 5:31SPEAKER_07: He's and he's like his he can stop on a dime and he's doing these spin moves to get out of like to avoid sacks.
- 5:38SPEAKER_07: It's I it's pretty impressive.
- 5:39SPEAKER_07: He's he's a pretty good football player.
- 5:41SPEAKER_07: It's just uh it's just I don't know if I I firmly believe in ASU as a team.
- 5:45SPEAKER_07: But again, I don't know.
- 5:47SPEAKER_07: They they weren't like I look at that team last year, and they had so many one-score games, and I'm like, any one of those could have kind of gone a different way, and then Arizona State doesn't go and do what they did.
- 5:59SPEAKER_07: But I don't know.
- 6:01SPEAKER_07: I I don't I don't see it with Arizona State, and yet they could still just win out.
- 6:06SPEAKER_04: If they blew if they didn't blow it to uh Mississippi State late in the game, it's we're we're talking about a a highly ranked team right now, and we'd probably be approaching it differently, you know.
- 6:16SPEAKER_04: They are ranked, by the way.
- 6:18SPEAKER_07: They are they made it they made it back to two, yeah, they made it back to 25 this week.
- 6:22SPEAKER_07: So we got some we got some more Big 12 representation in the AP poll.
- 6:27SPEAKER_04: All right, so uh do you want to talk about Houston's game or do you want to run that through the rest of the Big 12 before we just let's go through let's let's go through the rest of them and then we'll get back to Houston when we start talking about our game here coming up this week.
- 6:38SPEAKER_07: So uh early games on Saturday, Cincinnati, Kansas, Cincinnati pulls it out.
- 6:43SPEAKER_07: Your narrative.
- 6:44SPEAKER_07: My narrative, my my boy Soresby is elite.
- 6:49SPEAKER_07: And unfortunately, unfortunately for Cincinnati, it's just him on that team.
- 6:54SPEAKER_07: They're all of his skill positions are just it's brutal to watch sometimes.
- 6:59SPEAKER_07: Their defense, they were playing without Corleone, their best defensive player, the big lineman.
- 7:03SPEAKER_07: So I'll give him a little uh a little grace there, but no, both of these defenses were just awful all game.
- 7:11SPEAKER_04: A classic high-scoring Big 12 game here, like I'll throw in it back, old school.
- 7:16SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, dude, these these defenses are buns.
- 7:19SPEAKER_04: I I really it's gonna be interesting to see what our offense can do to the Jayhawks next weekend because it seems like we'll be able to put up some points in the Jones against those uh versus shoes.
- 7:31SPEAKER_04: But uh, dude, Satterfield needed that win so bad.
- 7:34SPEAKER_04: I I think I think if he continued to swirl, I think he'd probably be gone this year in in that city.
- 7:41SPEAKER_04: So he he's really starting to claw back at his job, you know, beating beating some legacy Big 12 teams here.
- 7:46SPEAKER_04: And uh, you know, this could be a spring board to have a decent year.
- 7:50SPEAKER_04: I mean, I mean there's I guess they could go bowling.
- 7:51SPEAKER_04: I don't look at the schedule, but like you said, the quarterback is legit.
- 7:55SPEAKER_07: You know, they're three and one.
- 7:56SPEAKER_07: They're they're three and one.
- 7:58SPEAKER_07: Their only loss was a three-point loss to Nebraska in week one.
- 8:01SPEAKER_07: Like, I don't know.
- 8:03SPEAKER_07: There, they could be they could be somebody.
- 8:04SPEAKER_07: They actually have a lot to prove coming up this weekend.
- 8:07SPEAKER_07: They play Iowa State at home.
- 8:10SPEAKER_07: So I don't know.
- 8:11SPEAKER_04: Maybe they pull that one out and then I'm saying that's that's an interesting game to watch, but I I I don't want to sit here and start thinking dark horse for the Big 12 at all.
- 8:20SPEAKER_04: Like this, obviously, the they've got some real issues.
- 8:22SPEAKER_04: I mean, if you can always sit here and talk about Soresby, dude.
- 8:25SPEAKER_04: I mean, the conversation should pretty much end there.
- 8:28SPEAKER_04: I mean, we we've we've seen a team like that.
- 8:30SPEAKER_04: We're too familiar with teams like that to put much too much more favor into that line of thinking.
- 8:36SPEAKER_07: Can I say something?
- 8:38SPEAKER_07: Oh god, what Brendan Sorsby is the third best quarterback in the Big 12.
- 8:44SPEAKER_04: Dude, you have a man crush on this guy.
- 8:46SPEAKER_04: Isn't he?
- 8:47SPEAKER_04: I'm saying he's the third CV Sans.
- 8:49SPEAKER_07: He is he's a good football player, he doesn't have anybody to work with.
- 8:53SPEAKER_07: The man has to do it all himself.
- 8:55SPEAKER_07: He there's only two quarterbacks that are better than him right now in the Big 12, and that's Sawyer Robertson and Rocco Beck.
- 9:00SPEAKER_07: Those are the only two that are better than Brendan Sorsby right now.
- 9:03SPEAKER_07: What about your guy, uh or our boy?
- 9:05SPEAKER_07: What about Mr.
- 9:06SPEAKER_07: Morton?
- 9:06SPEAKER_07: Sorry, what about the Baron?
- 9:08SPEAKER_07: We'll see.
- 9:09SPEAKER_07: We'll see.
- 9:09SPEAKER_07: Barron's and Barron's got a lot to prove.
- 9:12SPEAKER_07: Obviously, he's been dinged up this year, but that is such as Baron Morton.
- 9:16SPEAKER_07: And uh we'll see.
- 9:17SPEAKER_07: We'll see on Barron.
- 9:18SPEAKER_07: I'm not you can't put Barron in the top three right now.
- 9:21SPEAKER_07: Sawyer Robertson's killing it for Baylor.
- 9:22SPEAKER_07: He's the only reason they've won the games that they've won so far.
- 9:26SPEAKER_07: Rocco Beck is a baller, he just makes plays when you need him to make plays.
- 9:30SPEAKER_07: He is by far the most clutch quarterback in the Big 12 and has been electric for Iowa State.
- 9:37SPEAKER_07: And then Soresby's the only reason that Cincinnati's three and one right now.
- 9:40SPEAKER_07: And they're three and one playing with the worst skill position players.
- 9:44SPEAKER_07: I'm telling you, that's your top three quarterbacks right now.
- 9:46SPEAKER_04: You've been in love with that guy since they came to Lubbock last season.
- 9:50SPEAKER_07: Because he's good, and they put up 44 points on us and almost won.
- 9:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that that game was that game was scary, dude.
- 9:56SPEAKER_04: I thought we were gonna drop that one as we went further further into that game.
- 10:00SPEAKER_04: But um, dude, I I feel yeah, I mean, he's an average-looking guy, so uh, I don't know if your crush is that strong on him, but you did have to bring up the looks, it's not about the looks.
- 10:10SPEAKER_07: All right, I'm sure he's a fine-looking dude.
- 10:15SPEAKER_04: But dude, I'm not gonna lie, when Rings were on that team, obviously, TNT's broadcasts are legit.
- 10:19SPEAKER_04: I love seeing the TNT broadcast right now.
- 10:21SPEAKER_04: Uh, that's what the Cincinnati Kansas game was on.
- 10:24SPEAKER_04: Where were the Kansas fans?
- 10:26SPEAKER_04: Where were they?
- 10:28SPEAKER_04: They were they were there, they weren't like the sunny side of that sandy was pretty light.
- 10:34SPEAKER_07: Well, the sun's on them, they can't do it.
- 10:37SPEAKER_04: I know it's Kansas, how hot was it?
- 10:39SPEAKER_04: 80 something.
- 10:40SPEAKER_07: I don't know, man.
- 10:41SPEAKER_07: Kansas Kansas football's got a way to go.
- 10:43SPEAKER_07: They have to like actually compete for something for their fans to start showing up, but they're a they're a basketball school, always will be.
- 10:49SPEAKER_07: It's what it is.
- 10:51SPEAKER_07: Um what okay.
- 10:53SPEAKER_07: This next game, what's your beef with UCF?
- 10:55SPEAKER_07: You seem like you have a beef with UCF.
- 10:57SPEAKER_04: I have no beef with UCF.
- 10:58SPEAKER_04: Okay, I feel like you have a beef, you have a beef with UCF.
- 11:01SPEAKER_04: I have a little beef with UCF.
- 11:03SPEAKER_04: All right, they're they're pretty, they're pretty cocky.
- 11:05SPEAKER_04: Like they think they think that they think pretty highly of themselves.
- 11:08SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna lie.
- 11:09SPEAKER_04: And the whole Central Florida thing just kind of cracks me up, okay?
- 11:13SPEAKER_04: Like that's funny.
- 11:15SPEAKER_04: Them being upset at you calling them Central Florida, and then having your coach in the press conference say we're not Central Florida.
- 11:22SPEAKER_04: Like, this is just an asinine program.
- 11:25SPEAKER_04: Are you kidding me?
- 11:26SPEAKER_04: No wonder we call them the Mickey Mouse team in the league, dude.
- 11:29SPEAKER_04: Like, that is Mickey Mouse crap right there, dude.
- 11:31SPEAKER_07: Like, what is you dare?
- 11:33SPEAKER_07: Don't you dare call us tech.
- 11:36SPEAKER_07: No way.
- 11:36SPEAKER_07: You can't call us tech.
- 11:38SPEAKER_07: Can't do it.
- 11:39SPEAKER_07: We're Texas Tech University.
- 11:41SPEAKER_07: Actually, we do, we play them at leveling.
- 11:46SPEAKER_04: Okay, yeah.
- 11:46SPEAKER_04: All right, so we we can we can get more into it then, but like um all the the argument every single time is it's it's branding.
- 11:55SPEAKER_04: You call us UCF, not Central Florida.
- 11:57SPEAKER_04: They're like, you wouldn't call TCU Texas Christian.
- 11:59SPEAKER_04: It's like people say Texas Christian all the time, you know.
- 12:02SPEAKER_04: Like it's not TCU fans are like, no, you you it's it's TCU, it's not, it's not Texas Christian, or USC with Southern California.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: Like, are what Trojan fans be like, no, no, we're not Southern California.
- 12:16SPEAKER_07: You know who doesn't like it?
- 12:18SPEAKER_07: You know who doesn't like is South Carolina fans.
- 12:20SPEAKER_07: They don't like the USC thing because they want to be USC, yeah, they want to be USC and nobody calls them USC.
- 12:25SPEAKER_07: It's always Scar.
- 12:27SPEAKER_07: It just is what it is.
- 12:28SPEAKER_07: And Scar is cool.
- 12:30SPEAKER_07: Scar is cool.
- 12:30SPEAKER_07: That's what I'm saying.
- 12:31SPEAKER_07: They just they they feel like they're the USC, and it's like you're clearly not the USC.
- 12:37SPEAKER_04: It's just not we thankfully we are the TTU, like Tennessee Tech has nothing on us, but um watch out for Tennessee Tech, they're couping Steven.
- 12:47SPEAKER_04: The UCF, the thing that just I I I just laugh about the USCF thing is they were clearly the last team to be added to the Big 12 out of necessity.
- 12:54SPEAKER_04: Like, absolutely, like, no question about it.
- 12:57SPEAKER_04: Um, they are a G5 team spiritually.
- 13:00SPEAKER_04: You look at that stadium, that is a G5 stadium.
- 13:03SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 13:03SPEAKER_07: Oh, yeah.
- 13:04SPEAKER_07: It's by far the worst in the Big 12.
- 13:06SPEAKER_04: They have a an enormous, enormous student base, but they can't fill out a 45,000 stadium every single weekend.
- 13:15SPEAKER_04: Like, that's that's bad, dude.
- 13:16SPEAKER_04: Like, it's that is a G5.
- 13:18SPEAKER_04: Like, I've bet most I've had a whole lot of students there like wear uh Florida gear, Miami gear and stuff like that on Saturdays.
- 13:25SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 13:25SPEAKER_07: Um they're in a new program.
- 13:28SPEAKER_07: They started, yeah.
- 13:30SPEAKER_07: And so it's yes, I I was rooting for them against Kansas State, did not work out for me.
- 13:37SPEAKER_07: I was I was all in on Kansas State being just awful.
- 13:40SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, this they didn't look great against UCF.
- 13:45SPEAKER_07: And UCF's starting quarterback went out for a good portion of the game.
- 13:48SPEAKER_07: Backup came in, the backup is terrible.
- 13:51SPEAKER_07: Tried his best.
- 13:52SPEAKER_07: Eventually, the starter came back in, threw another touchdown.
- 13:55SPEAKER_07: But yeah, that game, uh I didn't you'll look at the buttons, you'll look at the score, and it's 34-20.
- 14:01SPEAKER_07: Kansas State's still not good.
- 14:03SPEAKER_07: No, just not.
- 14:04SPEAKER_04: No, they needed that game so bad though, like Climan did.
- 14:07SPEAKER_04: Oh, for sure.
- 14:08SPEAKER_04: And whenever it comes to that, like I'll usually I'll probably cheer for the uh uh Hateful 8 or Legacy Big 12 teams over the newbies for the most part, I'd say.
- 14:16SPEAKER_04: I mean, unless I kind of like have an affinity towards them, like I have a bit of an affinity towards the Arizona schools, I like them.
- 14:21SPEAKER_04: Um, and I like I'd absolutely cheer for them over TCU or Baylor.
- 14:24SPEAKER_04: Um, but dude, okay, and last thing, last thing with the ECF thing.
- 14:28SPEAKER_04: Um, since you asked, you're you're the one that opened this can of beans, so I'm gonna finish it here.
- 14:32SPEAKER_04: The the whole the Central Florida thing, like the reason why they're so testy about it is because they're coping.
- 14:37SPEAKER_04: They are a directional school, you are a directional school, and everyone knows that is as G5 as you could possibly be if you're a directional school.
- 14:45SPEAKER_04: The only exception is the USC.
- 14:48SPEAKER_04: Um so it's it's a code.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: Like if you're if you're counter to being upset about that as well, TCU, USC, and all that, they don't go by those, uh, or LSU, they don't go by those.
- 15:00SPEAKER_04: The difference is they would literally not bat an eye if you said the full name.
- 15:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, you're gonna be upset about it.
- 15:06SPEAKER_07: So I don't yeah, it I guess it's just the directional thing that makes them feel inferior a little bit.
- 15:13SPEAKER_07: But I don't know.
- 15:14SPEAKER_07: I it's it is funny when they when they don't like being called it.
- 15:18SPEAKER_07: But um moving on, Utah, our guys, the Utah Utes.
- 15:24SPEAKER_04: Oh, never mind, never mind.
- 15:25SPEAKER_04: I guess it was the same time.
- 15:26SPEAKER_07: No, no, no.
- 15:26SPEAKER_07: I'm going in.
- 15:27SPEAKER_07: Apologies.
- 15:28SPEAKER_07: Apologies.
- 15:28SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I'm going in north.
- 15:29SPEAKER_07: The Utah Utes are out here.
- 15:31SPEAKER_07: I want them to win out because I want that Texas Tech win in Salt Lake City to mean that much more.
- 15:37SPEAKER_07: So I am rooting hard for the Utah Utes throughout the rest of the year, and they just absolutely stopped West Virginia and Morgantown.
- 15:44SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'm gonna have to disagree about cheering for the Utah Utes moving forward.
- 15:47SPEAKER_04: I'm rooting for the Utes.
- 15:49SPEAKER_04: I understand the scheduling thing, but if you just keep winning, it doesn't matter.
- 15:54SPEAKER_04: Um, like for our ranking and seeding and all that.
- 15:57SPEAKER_04: We're way ahead of ourselves there, but but like it legit doesn't matter.
- 16:00SPEAKER_04: If we go undefeated to win the Big 12, we are absolutely a buy seed.
- 16:04SPEAKER_04: 1000.
- 16:05SPEAKER_07: See, but we need we need more ranked wins.
- 16:08SPEAKER_07: And right now, Utah is right on the cusp.
- 16:10SPEAKER_07: They were 27 in the AP poll, so they're right outside.
- 16:12SPEAKER_07: I want Utah to be ranked again.
- 16:14SPEAKER_07: Like, I want them to be a quality win.
- 16:16SPEAKER_04: We really don't need more ranked wins, though, in our situation.
- 16:20SPEAKER_04: If we go undefeated, it doesn't matter.
- 16:23SPEAKER_07: Yes, uh, yes, it doesn't matter, but it's going to look better for your resume if Utah ends up being a ranked team, and then you know because right now we're fighting for for wins against ranked teams, like Arizona State just got re-ranked, but they're 25.
- 16:36SPEAKER_07: BYU is 23 right now, and that's the only two you know potential ranked wins right now on your schedule.
- 16:42SPEAKER_07: So it I'm rooting for the teams that we beat afterwards so we can look better.
- 16:49SPEAKER_04: I just wish it wasn't the ETHU's because I kind of like whenever they lose to everybody else.
- 16:53SPEAKER_04: Like it's funny, it is funny.
- 16:55SPEAKER_04: So um, but dude, West Virginia stinks.
- 16:59SPEAKER_04: They stinks, they're bad, man.
- 17:02SPEAKER_04: Like they they they're definitely down in the basement.
- 17:05SPEAKER_04: There's like four tiers of the Big 12 right now, and they are in that that bottom fourth tier of the Big 12.
- 17:09SPEAKER_04: Like they're they're stinky, dude.
- 17:11SPEAKER_04: But Utah, Utah's showing they actually do have an offense.
- 17:14SPEAKER_04: I mean, obviously, West Virginia's defense is boo-boo, but like to put up nearly 50 points is impressive on the road no matter what in a Big 12 game.
- 17:21SPEAKER_04: So good, good job for the Us, dude.
- 17:23SPEAKER_04: Their defense is still legit, and uh we that still looks like a really good win for us.
- 17:28SPEAKER_04: So I'm with you on that.
- 17:29SPEAKER_04: It just I just wish it wasn't the Utes.
- 17:31SPEAKER_07: It's crazy how Devin Dampier's ankle magically healed up so quickly to be electric against West Virginia when he was clearly injured and hobbled against Texas Tech.
- 17:42SPEAKER_04: I'm sure the Mountaineers love that.
- 17:44SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I'm sure they did.
- 17:47SPEAKER_07: Baylor beats the first game for Oklahoma State, not coached by Mike Gundy in 21 years.
- 17:54SPEAKER_07: I was wrong last week when we talked.
- 17:57SPEAKER_07: I did not think they were gonna fire him midseason.
- 17:59SPEAKER_07: They fired him midseason.
- 18:00SPEAKER_07: Oklahoma State is down so so bad right now.
- 18:03SPEAKER_07: Baylor, good offense, terrible defense.
- 18:06SPEAKER_07: They let a terrible Oklahoma State team, scored 27 points on them.
- 18:10SPEAKER_07: And yeah, I didn't, I didn't say Oklahoma State's bad.
- 18:14SPEAKER_07: Baylor is probably gonna be around like the seven win mark.
- 18:18SPEAKER_04: Dude, OSU was in it until like the third quarter.
- 18:22SPEAKER_04: He was OSU was in that game for most of the game.
- 18:25SPEAKER_04: Like Baylor's defense is bad.
- 18:28SPEAKER_07: Do you kind of believe though?
- 18:29SPEAKER_07: Do you kind of believe in the interim like bump on the first game?
- 18:33SPEAKER_07: Sure.
- 18:33SPEAKER_07: You know, after a coach after the coach gets fired, the team kind of rallies behind the new interim coach, and then they play a little better to potentially you know steal a game.
- 18:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, I get I kind of get where you're going with that, but this OSU team is just too bad to just pop it off like that.
- 18:49SPEAKER_04: Um, but I kind of get where you're going, but nah, I I I I think Baylor's defense is really bad.
- 18:55SPEAKER_07: Uh Baylor's defense is brutal.
- 18:57SPEAKER_07: There's it's deplorable to watch.
- 18:59SPEAKER_04: And which is funny for Dave Aranda, the defense guy, to suck that bad at defense.
- 19:03SPEAKER_04: So, I mean, Dave Aranda might end up like Gundy by the end of the year.
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: Like it's kind of like what we've been saying for several seasons.
- 19:10SPEAKER_04: I understand that.
- 19:11SPEAKER_04: Um, but uh is Gundy gonna be the only Big 12 coach not here again?
- 19:16SPEAKER_07: Well, no, because this is how it works with Dave Aranda.
- 19:19SPEAKER_07: The the team starts to or the the fan base starts to you know put out tweets oh my god, we're never gonna win with Dave Aranda.
- 19:25SPEAKER_07: We need to cut ties right now.
- 19:27SPEAKER_07: This is the time to do it, and then Baylor's gonna go and win by three touchdowns next week, and then they're gonna be reeled right back in.
- 19:33SPEAKER_07: That's how it works with the Dave Aranda Baylor Bears.
- 19:36SPEAKER_07: So yeah, just look for if you're a betting person, uh bet the over on Baylor, Kansas State with Baylor winning by probably three touchdowns.
- 19:44SPEAKER_07: That's how it's gonna work.
- 19:45SPEAKER_04: Is that who they have this weekend?
- 19:47SPEAKER_07: Yeah, they're in Waco and they play Kansas State.
- 19:50SPEAKER_04: That'll be a pretty intriguing game, I bet.
- 19:52SPEAKER_04: Like, I think we'll kind of see if K-State recalibrated at all in bail, and if Baylor's really bad, or if just K-State's that bad.
- 20:00SPEAKER_04: So that'll be uh that'll be an interesting uh game to see.
- 20:03SPEAKER_04: But dude, I mean, do you have any like um obituary for Gundy's career?
- 20:07SPEAKER_04: Because we haven't recorded an episode since it happened.
- 20:10SPEAKER_04: I mean, this is the most tenured coach, not only in the Big 12, but one of the most senior coaches in the entire sport at one school is almah.
- 20:17SPEAKER_04: As long as I can remember, dude, he's been the coach for Oklahoma State.
- 20:20SPEAKER_04: And just what a legend.
- 20:23SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, he wasn't the whole thing with Gundy is he wasn't willing to, you know, get with the times, and that's why his program got as bad as it did.
- 20:31SPEAKER_07: So I I yeah, you can respect the the job that he did for so many years at Oklahoma State, making them relevant and making them contenders for as long as he did.
- 20:40SPEAKER_07: But yeah, there he it was time to go.
- 20:43SPEAKER_07: And he was not eye to eye with that administration probably for like the last five years.
- 20:48SPEAKER_07: Like they were not seeing eye to eye.
- 20:50SPEAKER_07: He was not willing to go in with NIL, and uh, and yeah, Oklahoma State did what they needed to do.
- 20:56SPEAKER_07: And uh Gundy will I think he'll keep going.
- 20:59SPEAKER_07: I think he'll keep coaching.
- 21:01SPEAKER_04: Wow, you think so, what do you think analyst position or something?
- 21:05SPEAKER_07: Maybe for he may go on TV for maybe a year or two, but I think he'll get back into coaching.
- 21:11SPEAKER_07: I mean, he's still fairly young.
- 21:12SPEAKER_07: He's in his what he's in his 50s still.
- 21:15SPEAKER_07: Is he 60?
- 21:16SPEAKER_07: Okay, well, his I mean he could still do it.
- 21:18SPEAKER_04: I think he's yeah, I think since he's not old for a coach.
- 21:21SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I think it's a disaster.
- 21:23SPEAKER_07: I would avoid it at all costs hiring Mike Gundy.
- 21:25SPEAKER_07: I don't care who you are.
- 21:26SPEAKER_07: Uh I would be no.
- 21:28SPEAKER_07: That's a big no for me.
- 21:30SPEAKER_07: But he'll get hired somewhere.
- 21:32SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, for sure.
- 21:33SPEAKER_04: Like I I I again, uh a lecture, but like I think I think he's the perfect picture of the game passed him by, as you were saying.
- 21:41SPEAKER_04: Like, truly uh kind.
- 21:42SPEAKER_04: I feel like Nick Saving got out at the right time.
- 21:44SPEAKER_04: You know, the game was clearly gonna pass him by because I'm sure he did not want to play the game either, like that.
- 21:49SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I think we're gonna start seeing the old guard really disappear at this point, and then Mike Vendy's a big indicator of that.
- 21:55SPEAKER_04: So uh, I think that we should keep our eyes on San Antonio and San Marcus for.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: Uh or maybe even Denton for their next head coach.
- 22:03SPEAKER_04: So it'll be uh it'll be interesting to see.
- 22:06SPEAKER_07: That would be a bad move from all three of those programs if they look to hire Mike Gundy.
- 22:12SPEAKER_04: Oh no, I meant I meant for OSU to hire their own.
- 22:16SPEAKER_07: Oh, you're saying for Oklahoma State.
- 22:17SPEAKER_07: Okay, you're saying for the next Oklahoma State coach.
- 22:19SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I can see it.
- 22:20SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 22:21SPEAKER_07: Um trailers definitely, I think, pretty high on their list along with Kinney.
- 22:26SPEAKER_07: And Eric is smoking UNT.
- 22:30SPEAKER_07: If they keep winning, what they're undefeated.
- 22:32SPEAKER_07: I mean Didn't the favorites make a playoffs on this point.
- 22:35SPEAKER_07: So U and T.
- 22:36SPEAKER_07: It's them in Memphis right now for the for the G5 spot.
- 22:40SPEAKER_04: Americans are good this year, dude.
- 22:41SPEAKER_04: So they win it.
- 22:42SPEAKER_04: Like they obviously deserve it.
- 22:43SPEAKER_04: So we'll see.
- 22:44SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 22:45SPEAKER_07: Iowa State took care of business against the previously undefeated Arizona Wildcats.
- 22:51SPEAKER_07: Iowa State just took it to them.
- 22:53SPEAKER_07: They're they're clearly a better team uh than than Arizona.
- 22:58SPEAKER_07: But I don't know.
- 23:00SPEAKER_07: I think this says more about Arizona than it does Iowa State here.
- 23:03SPEAKER_07: Uh Iowa State, good team.
- 23:05SPEAKER_07: Darn good team.
- 23:06SPEAKER_07: Absolutely a competitor for the Big 12.
- 23:08SPEAKER_07: Arizona State, or I'm sorry, Arizona is not good.
- 23:12SPEAKER_07: They're just not.
- 23:13SPEAKER_04: I think I think if we're gonna see another coach go this season, it's probably gonna be Arizona's.
- 23:18SPEAKER_04: What's his name?
- 23:18SPEAKER_04: Like uh crap.
- 23:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 23:22SPEAKER_04: Um I think if I think if you're gonna see two go, it's it's them and him and Oklahoma State.
- 23:26SPEAKER_04: So Arizona's bad.
- 23:27SPEAKER_04: I mean, after a while, everyone was like kind of like, uh, are they maybe something?
- 23:31SPEAKER_04: Because you know, they've managed to win all their games to this point.
- 23:33SPEAKER_04: But I guess as soon as they met a real competition, they just smacked on a wall and fell on their faces.
- 23:38SPEAKER_04: So I would say it's the real deal, though.
- 23:40SPEAKER_04: It's not like the season is a complete bust for Arizona yet, but uh they they got some issues there and it too's on.
- 23:46SPEAKER_07: Yeah, clearly uh uh talent deficiency on the on the lines, and uh Fafita's just not great.
- 23:53SPEAKER_07: I just I never saw it really with him, and he was getting a lot of hype going into last year, and pretty much proved uh without Jed Fish that uh Arizona's not not in a great spot.
- 24:04SPEAKER_07: So we yeah, uh you may see a new head coach over there next year.
- 24:07SPEAKER_07: BYU Colorado was the end cap for the Big 12.
- 24:13SPEAKER_07: I didn't see any of this game because it was too late.
- 24:16SPEAKER_07: Uh any thoughts on a three-point win in Boulder?
- 24:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, dude, I I was I was able to uh catch most of this game.
- 24:23SPEAKER_04: Uh started falling asleep in the second half there.
- 24:26SPEAKER_04: But um it's BYU has a solid defense.
- 24:31SPEAKER_04: And obviously, anytime you're going into another environment, that and Folsom's uh stadium was was definitely rocking.
- 24:36SPEAKER_04: Like it was a packed crowd.
- 24:38SPEAKER_04: Um, and you know, you're you're hosting a ranked team, but BY's defense really held it down.
- 24:43SPEAKER_04: And again, they're being led by a freshman quarterback, so you really saw some uh freshman mistakes there.
- 24:48SPEAKER_04: Uh he's obviously good enough to get them over the hump.
- 24:50SPEAKER_04: But again, I kind of like how you said this says more about Arizona.
- 24:53SPEAKER_04: I think this is also more of an indication on Colorado than it is on BYU.
- 24:57SPEAKER_04: Um because I think Colorado is in for uh a hurting of a year.
- 25:02SPEAKER_04: Like you lost badly to a Houston team that isn't looking great right now.
- 25:07SPEAKER_04: So it's Colorado's got some serious issues right now in uh in Boulder.
- 25:13SPEAKER_04: In BY, I think BYU kind of more escaped than it was Colorado uh um showing what they were kind of, you know.
- 25:21SPEAKER_07: BYU is going to be 6-0 by the time they play Utah in the Holy War.
- 25:29SPEAKER_07: They have West Virginia next and then they have Arizona after that.
- 25:32SPEAKER_07: So I don't see I don't see BYU dropping any of those.
- 25:35SPEAKER_07: So they'll be 6-0 going uh hosting the Utah Utes for the Holy War.
- 25:41SPEAKER_07: So I think that'll be the our first game where we actually start to figure out if BYU's any good.
- 25:46SPEAKER_07: And even then, rivalry game, it tends to be no matter, yeah, no matter how good or how bad one of the teams is, it's just always gonna be kind of tight.
- 25:54SPEAKER_07: So after that, though, they have a freaking gauntlet.
- 25:58SPEAKER_07: They play Utah, they go two Ames, play Iowa State, two Lubbock, TCU at home, and then at Cincinnati.
- 26:06SPEAKER_04: But my goodness, dude.
- 26:08SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:09SPEAKER_07: Not not a good stretch for the Kooks.
- 26:11SPEAKER_04: He can still end with a good record, though, with that.
- 26:13SPEAKER_04: So absolutely.
- 26:15SPEAKER_04: That's that can absolutely still be a very solid season for a Kalani Sataki.
- 26:18SPEAKER_04: Um, and it this is a good indicator of where way with the way things are going, BYU.
- 26:23SPEAKER_04: I think BYU's absolutely got the tools to succeed moving forward.
- 26:26SPEAKER_04: They just got really unlucky with their quarterback situation.
- 26:28SPEAKER_04: So uh they're obviously I I'm not obviously counting that as a dub yet.
- 26:32SPEAKER_04: I just want to see more as a more from them before they come to the Lubs and see what they're all about.
- 26:37SPEAKER_07: For sure.
- 26:38SPEAKER_07: 100%.
- 26:39SPEAKER_07: All right, man.
- 26:40SPEAKER_07: Let's talk coups, the other coup.
- 26:43SPEAKER_07: Which ones?
- 26:45SPEAKER_07: The H Town.
- 26:46SPEAKER_07: How many do we have at the conference?
- 26:49SPEAKER_04: Those two, two, two, two cats, two cougars, one bear cat.
- 26:55SPEAKER_07: There's three three total with Wazoo.
- 26:58SPEAKER_07: Get another cougar in there.
- 27:00SPEAKER_07: But Houston is hosting Texas Tech.
- 27:04SPEAKER_07: Two undefeated Big 12 teams.
- 27:08SPEAKER_07: Two Giants is ranked 11 in the country right now, above the Georgia Bulldogs, above the LSU Tigers.
- 27:16SPEAKER_07: Your Texas Tech Red Raiders are number 11 in the country.
- 27:19SPEAKER_07: The Houston Cougars are also undefeated at 4-0.
- 27:23SPEAKER_07: No votes.
- 27:24SPEAKER_07: Receive no votes.
- 27:25SPEAKER_07: No votes, zero votes.
- 27:28SPEAKER_07: Not a single vote for the Couggs after they escaped.
- 27:36SPEAKER_07: The Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis.
- 27:43SPEAKER_07: Dude.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 27:46SPEAKER_04: I the way I the way I look at this Houston team right now is this Houston offense is us.
- 27:54SPEAKER_04: This Houston offense is quite inconsistent, it seems.
- 28:00SPEAKER_04: Um, I it really seems like they're either in the rhythm or they're not.
- 28:04SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 28:05SPEAKER_04: It's it does look like it travels well, looks like it only does well in Houston.
- 28:09SPEAKER_04: And by uh, it's kind of nuts how their trip to Corvalley, Corvallis was the first time they left the city of Houston at all this season so far.
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: So that that's that's bananas, and that's definitely helpful for the restfulness of your team.
- 28:24SPEAKER_04: Um, but dude, again, it's it Houston doesn't scare me as much as they did towards the beginning of the season.
- 28:32SPEAKER_04: And I know whenever you're on the road, it doesn't sometimes it doesn't matter who you're playing, but that would mean something if the other team had a pulse.
- 28:41SPEAKER_04: But dude, this Oregon State team sucks.
- 28:43SPEAKER_04: They're bad, dude.
- 28:45SPEAKER_04: They're so bad.
- 28:46SPEAKER_04: And they're all their defense is terrible.
- 28:48SPEAKER_04: And you made them look like freaking uh uh Nick Sabin's Alabama out there, man.
- 28:54SPEAKER_04: You know, and and caller Wegb and Connor Wegman was throwing the worst in your first one.
- 29:01SPEAKER_04: That person is like right to the beams, you know, and it's not even like you come back and put them away either.
- 29:09SPEAKER_04: You have to go to overtime to win this game.
- 29:11SPEAKER_04: Like it's I was pretty embarrassed with the Big 12, you know, in general.
- 29:16SPEAKER_04: Like that was just a bad look for the conference, but it did make me feel good about our game in Houston.
- 29:24SPEAKER_04: And honestly, I wanted Houston to win for our sake as well.
- 29:27SPEAKER_04: Like, I did not want the Beavers to win that game because I did not want to have to play a U of H team that's even more motivated than they are to beat us this time around.
- 29:35SPEAKER_04: So uh I'm I'm happy with the results.
- 29:38SPEAKER_04: I I honestly it's a perfect situation whenever you're about to play an opponent, and you see they suck against another guy, but they still won.
- 29:44SPEAKER_04: So it's I think we're in the like the perfect scenario going to the third ward.
- 29:49SPEAKER_04: What do you say, man?
- 29:51SPEAKER_07: Well, I'm looking at Houston, and I had a prediction, but now I looked at the remaining schedule, and uh they have a pretty cake remaining schedule after Texas Tech.
- 30:02SPEAKER_07: They play Oklahoma State, they play Arizona, they play UCF, and they play West Virginia.
- 30:06SPEAKER_07: So you've got about you got the four probably worst teams in the Big 12 still on your schedule afterwards, and then they they do have to go to Tempe, play Arizona State, they'll drop that one.
- 30:16SPEAKER_07: They play TCU at home, they'll probably drop that one, and then they go to Waco and play Baylor.
- 30:21SPEAKER_07: That one's kind of uh up in the air.
- 30:23SPEAKER_07: But I thought originally Houston feeling good about themselves, they're 4-0.
- 30:30SPEAKER_07: Yes, you escaped one in Corvallis, but you still won and you're still undefeated.
- 30:34SPEAKER_07: Houston, I don't think, was expecting much this year.
- 30:38SPEAKER_07: I originally thought they're gonna play Texas Tech tight in Houston.
- 30:43SPEAKER_07: And tech's gonna make mistakes, tech's gonna not play completely up to par.
- 30:48SPEAKER_07: They're still gonna get the dub, but it's going to be a tighter game than what most Texas Tech fans want to see.
- 30:53SPEAKER_07: And then Houston was just gonna start from there.
- 30:55SPEAKER_07: But with this remaining schedule, I think Houston could probably end up being a seven-win, eight-win team.
- 31:01SPEAKER_07: Honestly.
- 31:02SPEAKER_07: It's crazy.
- 31:04SPEAKER_07: But no, I think if you're looking at both of these teams, they're vastly different talent-wise.
- 31:09SPEAKER_07: Texas Tech is clearly the more talented team on both the offensive line and the defensive line.
- 31:14SPEAKER_07: They're gonna absolutely dominate the trenches.
- 31:17SPEAKER_07: I'm curious to see how Baron Morton is.
- 31:20SPEAKER_07: He is healthy, according to Joey McGuire's recent press conference today.
- 31:25SPEAKER_07: But we'll see.
- 31:26SPEAKER_07: We'll see what he does against this Houston defense because honestly, prior and and even in the Oregon State game, the Houston defense was still solid.
- 31:35SPEAKER_07: They were put in some bad situations by the Wegman interception and everything like that.
- 31:40SPEAKER_07: And, you know, they held Rice to nine points.
- 31:43SPEAKER_07: Colorado did put 20 on him, but I I don't know.
- 31:46SPEAKER_07: We'll take that for what it is.
- 31:48SPEAKER_07: They shut out Stephen F.
- 31:49SPEAKER_07: Austin.
- 31:50SPEAKER_07: The defense is solid.
- 31:51SPEAKER_07: It's probably gonna provide a little bit of headaches for the Texas Tech offense, but the defense is gonna be overwhelming in Texas Tech's favor.
- 31:59SPEAKER_07: Like, I don't, you know, Connor Wegman has relied on his legs uh for the majority of this just because he does not have the skill position, guys, to you know, really cause a lot of damage.
- 32:11SPEAKER_07: They do have a nice tight end.
- 32:12SPEAKER_07: Tyler Cosiel is a pretty good player for them.
- 32:15SPEAKER_07: Nice target.
- 32:16SPEAKER_07: I think he's leading the team in receptions.
- 32:18SPEAKER_07: The running back that they got from Rice, uh, the transfer Dean Connors is okay.
- 32:23SPEAKER_07: I don't think he's a world beater by any means.
- 32:26SPEAKER_07: They do have a defensive lineman, Carlos Carlos Allen, who's pretty good.
- 32:29SPEAKER_07: Uh kind of a Skyler Gill Howard, Lee Hunter type in the interior.
- 32:33SPEAKER_07: But other than that, man, I I'm not afraid of this game.
- 32:37SPEAKER_07: I I'm just I'm expecting a lot of tech fans to be there.
- 32:40SPEAKER_07: I'm expecting Texas Tech to take care of business.
- 32:43SPEAKER_04: So you're less scared now than you think you were earlier in the season?
- 32:46SPEAKER_04: Because I remember when we were kind of looking down the season, we were like, you know, that could be a trap game when we're looking at Houston, you know, especially coming off of uh of U of H.
- 32:54SPEAKER_04: I mean not U of H of Utah.
- 32:56SPEAKER_04: Um if you believe in any sort of post-bye-week lull, it's not a great place to be either.
- 33:01SPEAKER_04: So uh originally, originally this game looks scarier than it does now.
- 33:05SPEAKER_04: And I'm I'm in full agreement on that.
- 33:07SPEAKER_04: Um, I I do I do think the only thing U of H has going for them is they're just gonna be so motivated to win this game.
- 33:16SPEAKER_04: Um, I really think that this is the team they probably want to beat the most out of the entire schedule.
- 33:20SPEAKER_04: I think the way U of H sees Texas Tech is probably their biggest foe in the conference, regardless of the sport, regardless of any situation.
- 33:29SPEAKER_04: I really think they see us that way as the team to be at all times, just due to the fan base, our fan bases being so intertwined with each other.
- 33:36SPEAKER_04: Um I do think, thankfully, regardless of that, is I think this code this environment will be very favorable to the Tex Tech Grand Raiders.
- 33:46SPEAKER_04: I think that we're gonna be seeing a stadium that could potentially be playing uh flirting with uh perhaps 50% sort of capacity, like of Tex Tech fans in capacity sort of deal.
- 33:57SPEAKER_04: I really do.
- 33:59SPEAKER_07: We did it again.
- 34:00SPEAKER_07: We found another code and it was put on Twitter.
- 34:04SPEAKER_07: I don't believe it.
- 34:05SPEAKER_07: I don't know how Texas Tech fans continue to find these codes to away stadiums, but they found it was like the band or something.
- 34:12SPEAKER_07: It was like the band support the band, buy a ticket to get into the game, and it and it made its way on Texas Tech Twitter, and I think we either bought them out or they they stopped it after they saw the like uptick in ticket sales.
- 34:28SPEAKER_07: But uh yeah, we're gonna get a lot of rhetoric here.
- 34:30SPEAKER_04: And one what one has to wonder, uh, I it may it may not be 50% because I feel like if it's going to be uh if there's gonna be a game where their fans actually show up, it's gonna be this game.
- 34:40SPEAKER_04: I mean, you're hosting a number 11 in-state rival, so you're gonna want to be there to see it.
- 34:45SPEAKER_04: But man, the the the atmosphere in that stadium has been awful this year.
- 34:50SPEAKER_04: Like you turn on the TV, and I I don't want to rip on other stadiums too much, but like you turn on the TV, and that place is MPD.
- 34:56SPEAKER_04: Like it's again another enormous student population that goes to that school.
- 35:00SPEAKER_04: You're in what the fourth largest city in the country, and you can't get people in your seats.
- 35:06SPEAKER_04: Such a professional sports town, you know.
- 35:08SPEAKER_04: Um, but uh I think obviously the biggest story of all this it's Shield Woods homecoming.
- 35:14SPEAKER_07: I was just about to bring that up.
- 35:16SPEAKER_07: The revenge game for Shield Wood.
- 35:19SPEAKER_07: I don't know if it's a revenge game for Shields against us.
- 35:22SPEAKER_07: Is it I don't know if revenge works, but yeah, it was kind of funny.
- 35:25SPEAKER_07: Did you did you listen to the press conference that they have today?
- 35:30SPEAKER_07: So Shield Wood was work for a living.
- 35:34SPEAKER_07: I worked for a living as well, but I threw it on there on the background.
- 35:38SPEAKER_07: The this is the one where Joey and the coordinators have their weekly presser, and they asked Shield Wood about you know returning, and dude could not have been more like, what about it?
- 35:51SPEAKER_07: What like he did?
- 35:54SPEAKER_07: It was kind of weird.
- 35:55SPEAKER_07: I was I was honestly, they were like the the reporter in Lubbock was clearly like wanting something, like wanting at least, you know, a little soundbite of him like praising Willie Fritz or his time there or whatever, and he just wasn't giving them what they wanted.
- 36:08SPEAKER_07: He was like, he was like, Yeah, no, I I enjoy everywhere I've been in my career, and I'm really enjoying my time in Lovbock.
- 36:17SPEAKER_07: And I was like, Okay, all right.
- 36:18SPEAKER_07: Maybe it made me kind of see that there might be a little ill will, which is fair, you know.
- 36:25SPEAKER_07: You left Houston for an in-conference in-state team that plays you for yes, it was a bigger payday, but you still left for another job.
- 36:35SPEAKER_07: I mean, that that could cause probably a little a little riff in the relationship with old coach Fritz, I think.
- 36:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah, dude.
- 36:42SPEAKER_04: I I I I I don't know if I I forgot to touch touch on this, but I this is truly a game where I think you're gonna you're gonna see that Tech's Tech is a different class than Houston.
- 36:53SPEAKER_04: Like we you don't just go and steal a coach of the same position to the same position within the conference like that.
- 37:04SPEAKER_04: Like, that is a true bullying, you know.
- 37:06SPEAKER_04: Like U of H couldn't even make him an offer for him to stick around in the same position in the same conference.
- 37:14SPEAKER_04: So it was a true bullying, man.
- 37:15SPEAKER_04: Like, and I think we're gonna see that from top to bottom for both coaching staff to players.
- 37:19SPEAKER_04: Textech has the opportunity to truly show like it's in a different class than U of H.
- 37:24SPEAKER_04: And I think Gilwood will be a uh one of those points to that uh inevitability, you know.
- 37:30SPEAKER_04: And I think it's I think that's good for us.
- 37:32SPEAKER_04: I think if we do want to establish ourselves as the new upper class of the Big 12, you do have to punish your um those who are perhaps not to your level, you know, like you really gotta go and make statements out of these games, you know what I mean?
- 37:50SPEAKER_04: If Utah is supposed to be in that same zone as us, we made sure it didn't look like it.
- 37:54SPEAKER_04: So you gotta go and blow Houston up, you know.
- 37:57SPEAKER_07: I think some people, if you're worried about the the revenge factor of maybe some potential, you know, stragglers that stayed on last year's Houston team that are now on this year's Houston team that were coached by Coach Wood.
- 38:09SPEAKER_07: There's only three.
- 38:10SPEAKER_07: There's only three remaining that were coached by Coach Wood that are on this current Houston team.
- 38:15SPEAKER_07: So I'm not too worried about a revenge factor, um, you know, potentially from Coach Fritz, you know, hyping up the guys and doing whatever.
- 38:22SPEAKER_07: But I I don't know.
- 38:24SPEAKER_07: I don't I don't see a big uh I don't see that happening.
- 38:28SPEAKER_07: And it's based completely off of what we've seen from Texas Tech so far, which was a trouncing of a good Utah team in Salt Lake City.
- 38:37SPEAKER_07: So this is the first time in a while that I am very, very confident in not only the talent on this team, but the way that this coaching staff is going to get them prepared for every single game, no matter who you're playing.
- 38:49SPEAKER_04: I think if you're worried that uh Fritz will know how to exploit Shield Wood's defense just due to his familiarity with it, A, I don't think U of H has the offensive weapons to do that.
- 39:00SPEAKER_04: And B, I I think that Shield Wood's talent access at Texas Tech is just so beyond what he was dealing with at U of H last year, even though their defense was great last year, that it won't even matter.
- 39:13SPEAKER_04: Like even if it's something that he's very familiar with, it'll still be you know a pie being shoved right into his face.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: So it's I think our defensive line is probably what scares teams the most, and I think we're gonna continue to see that happen here in Houston.
- 39:26SPEAKER_04: So, dude, it's and you you made a good point of it's all tech right now.
- 39:31SPEAKER_04: Techsteck has given us and all of our opponents zero reason to doubt our abilities right now.
- 39:37SPEAKER_04: We have destroyed everyone we played.
- 39:40SPEAKER_04: Destroy obviously the U the Utah game was close until the fourth quarter, but then in the fourth quarter, you show that no, we were a notch above this whole time, and it just finally came to up to push.
- 39:51SPEAKER_04: So while Houston has not done the same thing, Houston has clearly sputtered against a terrible team.
- 39:59SPEAKER_04: So a terrible team.
- 40:00SPEAKER_04: Probably you know the Oregon State is probably worse than Rice and Colorado.
- 40:06SPEAKER_04: So yeah, yeah, that is that that that's a bad look.
- 40:10SPEAKER_04: So there's a lot of doubt there, and like you said, dude, I think there's uh no reason to believe that we don't cover this game.
- 40:15SPEAKER_04: What's at 11 and a half right now?
- 40:17SPEAKER_07: I I absolutely it was it opened, it opened at nine.
- 40:20SPEAKER_07: It opened at nine.
- 40:22SPEAKER_04: Okay, but I see no reason for us not to bulletpast that cover.
- 40:26SPEAKER_04: Do we do our meeting this one?
- 40:28SPEAKER_07: I think the only thing I would worry about here is the is the potential, and you mentioned it earlier, the bye week coming off of the bye week, maybe coming out a little slow.
- 40:36SPEAKER_07: You haven't played a game in two weeks.
- 40:39SPEAKER_07: You're trying to maybe you're implementing something new in practice, you know, Barron's coming back from being a little dinged up.
- 40:45SPEAKER_07: So I think there's potential that Texas Tech could start slow in this one, but I think ultimately our defense is that good, and it's going to absolutely put Connor Wegman in hell this game.
- 40:56SPEAKER_07: And he's just gonna, I mean, it's gonna be unlike any defensive line that he's faced so far, and he's just gonna have Romelo Hyde in his face, David Bailey in his face, Lee Hunter in his face, Kill Howard in your face.
- 41:07SPEAKER_07: It's just yeah, I don't think he's gonna have a very fun day.
- 41:10SPEAKER_07: And uh the matchup, what I will say, the if you're looking for a one-on-one matchup, look for Romelo Hyde against Dalton Merriman, the left tackle for Houston, who, if you remember, was at Texas Tech the last couple of years and is now Houston's starting left tackle.
- 41:27SPEAKER_07: And old Dalton Merriman, I think, was more pushed out than anything at Texas Tech.
- 41:33SPEAKER_07: So I'm uh I'm curious to see if he uh potentially plays up to snuff a little bit for the uh for the revenge factor and also going up against Romello Height, who is uh like one of the one of the best graded pass rushers in all of college football so far this year.
- 41:49SPEAKER_07: So uh that's the one I'm gonna be watching on defense.
- 41:52SPEAKER_07: And uh yeah, I think it's uh I think we'll have a fun time on uh on Saturday night.
- 41:57SPEAKER_04: Good luck, sir.
- 41:58SPEAKER_04: Good luck, I would say.
- 42:00SPEAKER_04: And you know, I actually I mean I try not to get too cocky, right?
- 42:05SPEAKER_04: Like it we I know we're I know we're highly ranked in this, it's been a season of dreams so far.
- 42:10SPEAKER_04: Um, but you know, we we have we've it's not like we've experienced this kind of success as fans yet, so it's it's hard to you know to tamper your expectations, but just try to remember, you know, where where we've been.
- 42:19SPEAKER_04: Um but I I I feel so confident with this game, and plus I just kind of want to see the U of H fans get shut down as well.
- 42:29SPEAKER_04: They've been look they've been looking stoked with this game, like they just blew right past Oregon State.
- 42:34SPEAKER_04: I don't think any of their fans online were saying a word about the Beavers.
- 42:38SPEAKER_04: And then they nearly they nearly lost.
- 42:40SPEAKER_04: They probably should have lost.
- 42:42SPEAKER_04: So if he takes if he had to go to overtime to beat them.
- 42:45SPEAKER_07: So also go back go back to that go back to that Oregon State game for a second.
- 42:50SPEAKER_07: They were down by two touchdowns with like six and a half minutes left in the fourth quarter.
- 42:53SPEAKER_07: So they had to score two touchdowns, take it to overtime, and then you know, they eventually blocked the field goal because Oregon State special teams is just the worst thing I've ever seen in my entire life.
- 43:04SPEAKER_07: And uh and the Kooks pull it out.
- 43:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so exactly.
- 43:09SPEAKER_04: So I I feel so dang good about our chances come Saturday, dude.
- 43:14SPEAKER_07: Yeah, it should be fun.
- 43:16SPEAKER_07: I'm uh I'm excited.
- 43:18SPEAKER_07: I I want to keep playing, you know, teams that are undefeated.
- 43:20SPEAKER_07: So I'm glad Houston is in the position that they're in versus you know, they could have dropped the Colorado game, they could have even dropped the Rice game, knowing Houston from the past couple of years.
- 43:29SPEAKER_07: So I I'm uh I'm glad they're 4-0 going into this.
- 43:33SPEAKER_04: I will say that another very good analytical set about all this is U of H has beaten Texas Tech once in our lives.
- 43:42SPEAKER_04: Once.
- 43:43SPEAKER_04: One time.
- 43:46SPEAKER_04: One time in our lives.
- 43:47SPEAKER_04: They lead the overall series by like two games, but they haven't won a single game in all they've well, they've won one game in like thirty years.
- 43:55SPEAKER_04: So we play them pretty regularly, even at post Southwest conference.
- 43:59SPEAKER_07: So Yeah.
- 44:00SPEAKER_07: They were yeah, because we played them in the non-conference at least four times since we were in school.
- 44:05SPEAKER_07: I mean we played them a ton, but yeah, they're uh Yeah, what was that game that they won?
- 44:12SPEAKER_07: 2009.
- 44:14SPEAKER_07: 2009 in Houston.
- 44:17SPEAKER_07: They won by one point.
- 44:19SPEAKER_07: So they've won, they beat us one time since 1991.
- 44:22SPEAKER_04: Was that the Alex was that the Alex Smith?
- 44:24SPEAKER_04: Not Alex Smith.
- 44:25SPEAKER_04: Who was who's their case Keenum?
- 44:27SPEAKER_07: Case Keenum.
- 44:27SPEAKER_07: There was, I think that was Case Keenum.
- 44:29SPEAKER_07: Oh nine?
- 44:29SPEAKER_07: Is that Case Keenum?
- 44:30SPEAKER_07: I think so.
- 44:31SPEAKER_04: Probably.
- 44:31SPEAKER_07: I don't know.
- 44:32SPEAKER_07: But they only they beat us 29 to 28.
- 44:34SPEAKER_07: So they have the one-point win over us, but other than that, it's pretty bleak.
- 44:38SPEAKER_07: So hopefully we uh we keep building onto that.
- 44:41SPEAKER_07: Uh let's make it seven in a row.
- 44:44SPEAKER_07: How about you?
- 44:44SPEAKER_07: How about you?
- 44:45SPEAKER_07: But anything else you have left on this that covers it, man.
- 44:50SPEAKER_04: And uh I can't wait.
- 44:51SPEAKER_04: I'm looking to personally, I'm even looking past this game.
- 44:54SPEAKER_04: I can't wait just to get to the Kansas games.
- 44:56SPEAKER_04: That's the one we'll be at.
- 44:57SPEAKER_04: So and uh we're not we're not gonna see 6 30 p.m.
- 45:01SPEAKER_07: To make it clear, we're not looking past the UC.
- 45:04SPEAKER_07: No, we're not you gotta show up, you gotta play ball, you gotta beat a team that is currently undefeated and wants to beat you very badly.
- 45:10SPEAKER_07: So there is a motivation factor there.
- 45:12SPEAKER_07: Uh but if 10 plays their game, they're they're gonna be fine.
- 45:17SPEAKER_07: Yeah, we'll see how Baron is.
- 45:18SPEAKER_07: I'm excited to I'm excited because I want Barron to just get his confidence back.
- 45:21SPEAKER_07: I want him to be like electric and throw like five touchdowns in this game and get right back on track.
- 45:27SPEAKER_07: Oh Steven.
- 45:28SPEAKER_07: Because our fan base, because our fan base is going to be brutal on him, you know.
- 45:32SPEAKER_07: Yeah, Twitter.
- 45:33SPEAKER_07: If yeah, as soon as Barron throws an interception, it there's gonna be those those tricklers that come out of tech Twitter that are we should start Will Hammond.
- 45:42SPEAKER_04: No, no, dude.
- 45:43SPEAKER_04: If if if the game is close, that's gonna happen.
- 45:46SPEAKER_04: But if we lose, do you know how loud that's going to be?
- 45:50SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 45:51SPEAKER_04: Because they know from a lack of offensive output.
- 45:53SPEAKER_04: And at that point, it'd probably even be warranted.
- 45:56SPEAKER_04: So it's uh and we'll see, we'll see how this game goes.
- 45:59SPEAKER_04: That's that's not gonna happen.
- 46:00SPEAKER_04: I don't want to put any bad G Ju in the air.
- 46:02SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna knock off some wood here.
- 46:03SPEAKER_07: So no, yeah.
- 46:04SPEAKER_07: I'm uh I think Baron will be fine and we'll uh we'll play our game.
- 46:07SPEAKER_07: But our defense is gonna be that's the one to watch.
- 46:10SPEAKER_04: Deep in Stravels, as the ball knowers say, and that's that's that's what we've been missing as fans for a decade plus, and we finally have it.
- 46:18SPEAKER_04: Our defense is ludicrous.
- 46:19SPEAKER_04: Louticris.
- 46:21SPEAKER_07: Absolutely 6 p.m.
- 46:23SPEAKER_07: kick on ESPN, by the way.
- 46:25SPEAKER_07: So mainline ESPN, probably gonna be uh another game before it, and that's gonna delay the start of our game, or we're gonna have to watch it on ESPN U because that's how it always works with these night games.
- 46:38SPEAKER_07: But excited for Saturday, Tristan.
- 46:42SPEAKER_07: Let's end her off here with a song of the week.
- 46:45SPEAKER_07: Go ahead.
- 46:45SPEAKER_04: All right, so my song of the week is something I hope that does not reflect Saturday's game.
- 46:50SPEAKER_04: But dude, talking tech is also talking cover songs.
- 46:55SPEAKER_04: This this podcast loves them a cover.
- 46:58SPEAKER_04: So here's another emo country boy cover coming at you from our from my guy Rustin Kelly.
- 47:04SPEAKER_04: And this one is Avril Levine's complicated.
- 47:09SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 47:10SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah, dude.
- 47:11SPEAKER_04: It'll get in your ear and you all he'll just start singing it over and over again.
- 47:13SPEAKER_04: I don't know if it's the Avril Levine or the Rustin Kelly that makes that happen, but I'm going with complicated ear.
- 47:19SPEAKER_06: Tell me why you have to go to make things so complicated.
- 47:33SPEAKER_07: Okay, that was you brought this up last week, or something.
- 47:36SPEAKER_07: You brought this up in a group text of some of some sort.
- 47:38SPEAKER_07: But yeah, it's uh hey, we love our girl Avril, she's fantastic.
- 47:42SPEAKER_07: That she's like iconic for that for that 2000s like pop punk girl power.
- 47:49SPEAKER_07: Avril Levine is that that was a boy, she was a girl.
- 47:54SPEAKER_07: Can it get any more obvious?
- 47:59SPEAKER_07: The lyricism is electric.
- 48:01SPEAKER_07: That's a great choice.
- 48:02SPEAKER_07: I love it.
- 48:03SPEAKER_07: Uh, my song of the week is going to be from a band that I this is the first time I've heard of them was actually when I heard this song.
- 48:12SPEAKER_07: It was I was listening, and I don't listen to the radio often, but I was listening to XM, and I think he was in a rental car, and it was the Chris Stapleton uh whatever, whatever his channel is.
- 48:23SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and this song came on, and I really enjoyed it, I really got to it.
- 48:27SPEAKER_07: I'm probably mispronouncing the name of the band here, but my song of the week is called Bound for Glory by Tadeshi Trucks Band, I think is how you say it.
- 48:38SPEAKER_07: And it's kind of a jazzy, little country, a little uh maybe a little folky kind of band.
- 48:45SPEAKER_07: And this is a really good song.
- 48:47SPEAKER_07: It's called Bound for Glory by Tadeshi Trucks Band.
- 48:51SPEAKER_06: Can you feel it?
- 48:54SPEAKER_06: Bound for glory.
- 48:57SPEAKER_06: Can you feel it?
- 49:02SPEAKER_04: Let's go, dude.
- 49:03SPEAKER_04: I feel like it's been a while since we got some fresh blood on this this podcast.
- 49:07SPEAKER_04: With you know, it's been doing that.
- 49:09SPEAKER_07: That's what I wanted to do.
- 49:10SPEAKER_07: That's what I wanted to do.
- 49:11SPEAKER_07: I wanna I want to give uh the song, the point of the song of the week.
- 49:15SPEAKER_07: One sometimes is just to be funny, sometimes we relate it to the opponent that we're playing this coming week, and sometimes we're just like trying to give people something new and something fresh and something fun to listen to.
- 49:25SPEAKER_07: So, this is one of those.
- 49:26SPEAKER_07: It's a it's a banger.
- 49:27SPEAKER_04: So we've been doing this podcast for five years, so I just wanted to say that out loud again.
- 49:31SPEAKER_04: So wow, yeah, that's quite real.
- 49:35SPEAKER_04: It's been a long time.
- 49:36SPEAKER_04: So yeah, but yeah, dude, great, great, great way to sit us out on, man.
- 49:39SPEAKER_04: We're gonna beat the cube so bad this year.
- 49:41SPEAKER_04: I mean, this this fantastic which is the scheme, right?
- 49:46SPEAKER_07: I'm ready.
- 49:47SPEAKER_07: I'm ready.
- 49:47SPEAKER_07: You can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter.
- 49:49SPEAKER_07: Tristan's at Tristy Mick.
- 49:50SPEAKER_07: I'm at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez.

- 50:05SPEAKER_02: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 50:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 50:14SPEAKER_03: This is wild.
- 50:16SPEAKER_03: When I walked in and I knew this would be an awesome podcast, and these guys have been tremendous.
- 50:24SPEAKER_03: I love you, and I can't wait for this journey.
- 50:26SPEAKER_03: I would like to thank uh Stephen and Tristan.
- 50:29SPEAKER_01: This is incredible.
- 50:31SPEAKER_01: These guys have a passion and a love for this school.
