- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: Tristan, we just got a new addition to the basketball.
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: Well, not a new addition, but he's actually coming on the team now, my guy.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Is he better than me?
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Better than me at basketball hoops.
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: I'd probably say so, uh, considering you're not very good.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: Whoa.
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: Whoa.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: If if I'm not very good, what the heck does that make Michael Jordan?
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: Uh very good.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah?
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: You're not very good.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: I hate to I I hate to be the guy to break it to you, but all the best players have haters.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's true.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: Fardas Amak is much better than you at basketball, and he is officially going to play with Texas Tech this coming season.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: He has taken his name out of the NBA draft and is going to be a red raider next year.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: He said so on Twitter.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, this is great news.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: Uh, look at you just just saying his name very fluently.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: You're you're very, very fluent in the in the ways of Ardos AMAC.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: How did I do?
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: All right, you got it.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: Let's go.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: Let's go.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: That's a dub.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: Let's go.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: But yeah, man, super exciting news, dude.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: I I remember he whenever he, you know, quote unquote committed to tech a while back, you know.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: I I kind of felt like all right, he's coming, he's gonna be a red raider next year.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: It didn't really cross my mind that he was going to the NBA at that point.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Maybe it was just because I was like had my head in the clouds about it, but no, no, I was like, that is a red raider right there.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: He's in Lubbock and he's not gonna go to the NBA.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: He's gonna stay at the top level of the sport, not go to the bum NBA.
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the top level of college basketball.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: No, I mean that happens now with a lot of people.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: Now that you can take your name out of the NBA draft, it's weird though that a player would commit to a school, especially a different school, like transfer, announce that transfer, but still say, Okay, but I'm gonna keep my name in the draft.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: Like, are you?
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: Because it feels like you're committed to transfer to another school.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: I don't like Kevin McCullough did the same thing when and we'll get to him in a second.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: But like, why would you announce that you are committing to Kansas and then keep your name in the NBA draft?
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: Like, why would you do that?
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: That doesn't make it a great question, yeah.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: Great question, man.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: I I I don't know, I don't understand it either.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: Because I like you said, whenever whenever it's a player is committing to a college team while they're in the NBA draft, it just kind of feels like they're not going into the NBA then because you know, obviously, if you felt good about your chances of going into the NBA, this when they have been in discussion, anyway, right?
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: So maybe is you maybe it's a case of um, you know, they they want to make sure that they have a spot where they feel confident about getting them to the next NBA level at this new place.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: So they want to uh make sure that they they leave their team that they're leaving in a good spot with scholarships while also uh you know, obviously don't burn bridges, those are still your boys, uh, while also securing your spot on a team that you feel like would really fit because that team also has a limited amount of spaces, and those teams don't want to just sit there on and sit on their hands and wait for you to make your decision.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: You know, they have they have the whole team to care to figure things out, they're not waiting on one guy in the transfer portal, you know.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: So I feel like it might be a mix of that.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, it's it's fine to go get feedback.
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: I understand that move, and you know, even if guys really know they're probably not going to get drafted, they can still go talk to these NBA scouts, talk to these people, and realize what they have to do to potentially get drafted.
- 4:09SPEAKER_03: So that's why all these guys do it.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: That part of it, I understand.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: The part of just like committing before you take your name out of the draft to a different school seems weird to me.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: But uh, anyway, that usually means that they're coming back to college, and that is the case with Fardos AMAC.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: And now officially we can be happy with this stacked front court over here at Texas Tech next season with Fardos, with Kevin O'Banner, with Daniel Bacho, and with potentially KJ Allen, maybe another pickup.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: But I mean, this I don't know how teams are gonna rebound over us.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: I I like I feel like look, we're I feel like we're gonna win the rebounding battle every single game with these two.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it looks like we got a lot of size again.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: You know, that was something that our team had last year as well, you know, at least a lot of length, you know, a good amount of size.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: Uh, just and this looks like it's even more of a nightmare to defend against, you know, going up against big dudes is tough in the sport.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: So uh, like you said, man, I don't I don't know who the heck is beating us out in this board battle.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: Do you think these are the kinds of guys that Mark Adams is gonna thrive with uh in in that no-middle defense form with the with this with this amount of sheer tree size?
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, defensively, it's gonna be it's gonna be nice because both of these guys, I think, can move their feet as well.
- 5:25SPEAKER_03: And that was the whole thing about it.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: Like last season, we had bigs, but they could also move, you know, Bryson Williams, Marcus Sanosilva, O'Banner, all these guys, when we ended up switching on defense, could stay in front of smaller guards, and that's the good thing.
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: I mean, AMAC's a little bigger than those guys, but I think he can still move his feet just fine and stay in front of, I don't know, like in for last season and stay in front of a James McKinjo, or stay in front of a uh Adam Flagler or Marcus Carr or something like of that nature.
- 5:54SPEAKER_03: So I don't think we're you know transitioning worse in that department, if that makes sense.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: Like I think Fardas is gonna be just as good of a defender, if not better.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, he was a two-time uh whack conference of the uh defensive player of the year over there at Utah Valley State.
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: So um you get him and O'Banner, we saw he picked it up really nicely defensively last season.
- 6:18SPEAKER_03: I thought he he started off a little rough, but he really picked it up.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: So um with these two guys coming in, I think offensively is where we're really gonna see uh something happen with these two because both of them can shoot.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: We've seen that.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: I mean, we've seen from Kevin O'Banner, yeah, he had kind of a down year last year, but we've seen him in a more fluid offensive system.
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: And I think we're gonna have that with our guards, um, kind of an upgrade, a more true point guard, kind of ball handler type role this year versus last season.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: Um, and then AMA, of course, can step outside and shoot.
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: He can be in the post, he can shoot the mid-range.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, he can do everything.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: So uh this is obviously we've said it when he committed before that this would be a massive pickup, but now it's confirmed to be a massive pickup for Texas Tech.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I like how he brought up the offense.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: So, do you think whatever a coach Adam staff is looking at recruiting a kid?
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: Do you think they they look at an athletic guy and say, we can we can teach him the defense, we can coach him the defense?
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: Does he have the offensive ability to you know pick up the slack there?
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: Do you think that's kind of where their mind is at?
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: Or do you think they're also saying, no, we we could teach him how to be a great shooter and uh and scorer as well?
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Or do you think they kind of want that to kind of come along with them whenever they're doing transfers?
- 7:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think that's the kind of the Mark Adams style of recruiting.
- 7:34SPEAKER_03: I think even Luke Adams has said that before.
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: This is what Mark Adams likes to do.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: He likes to have guys that are already skilled offensively and have the intangibles.
- 7:43SPEAKER_03: He can teach anybody in the world defense, he's that good of a defensive coach, he believes himself that much uh to teach any guy in any guy in the world how to take a charge, how to move on defense, how to do anything like that.
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: So if he can get already offensively skilled players to work on that side, um, you know, you got a pretty good uh pretty good combination right there.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: But it's it's funny that you bring up the staff because we did bring on uh we have completed, or I shouldn't say we, Mark Adams has completed his staff for next season after losing us.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: We he asked for a consultation with us, and uh, you know, we gave him, we said, Steve Green, that's your guy, you know, go from South Plaints College, West Texas, you know, offensive-minded coach, come on in.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: Uh, but no, seriously, I mean, after Talon Hester and Barrett Peary departed from this year's staff, uh, Talon Hester, of course, going to be the head coach of Louisiana Tech, and uh Barrett Peary leaving for UNLV, um, he's he's completed that.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: He brought in Al Pinkins, uh, the assistant, I believe he was at Florida before this, but he was at Texas Tech previously.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: Uh, he's coming back to Lubbock, and now he brings in Steve Green, who is a coaching legend at South Plains College.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: So you think this is uh higher that's definitely going to try to inject more of that offensive firepower into it?
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: Do you think he's bringing him on for any uh recruiting reasons as well, like understanding the zone?
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Because I mean the Mark Adams is obviously a West Texas guy.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: So do you think he really brings in a whole lot of recruiting edge, or do you think it's just mostly for uh the X's and O's of the sport more so?
- 9:16SPEAKER_03: I think the green hiring is more for the X's and O's.
- 9:19SPEAKER_03: I think the Pinkins hiring is more for the recruiting edge.
- 9:23SPEAKER_03: Um, now I'm not, you know, Steve Green has his own connections, he's been in coaching for a long time.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: I believe he's 68 years old.
- 9:30SPEAKER_03: So uh he's been at it a while.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: And so I what he's known for though at South Plains College is the goal, the Golden State offense that he runs.
- 9:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, they're always one of the top dogs in scoring over there.
- 9:42SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, they've won multiple championships.
- 9:44SPEAKER_03: He's won three-time coach of the year for uh National Junior College Association.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: Um, I mean, he's he's been around the block.
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: And apparently, Mark Adams wanted to hire him for the initial staff, but uh for some reason, uh Green wanted to stay at South Plans.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's probably hard to leave uh a job you've had for 20 plus seasons.
- 10:06SPEAKER_03: Um, so uh he he finally gets him to Texas Tech.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: I think this is just a great hire for him, and him and Mark Adams know each other well.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think more so than Peary and Adams do.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: And um, I you know, I I think this is a fantastic hire all around.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the great point at the end, man.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: I I think this is this just adds chemistry to the coaching staff, which is obviously what you need, especially the top brass.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: So, dude, I'm on board with it.
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: I don't think Mark Adams is ever gonna have given us a reason yet to be cautious about a hire.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: And I mean, our head coach is an ex-awesome junior college coach of the year.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: So I don't think we should be worried about the translation between junior college to the top level, because if if we freaking love our dude and think he's one of the best coaches in the country, I don't think we should be too scared of this.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: So I think it's just just kind of like another Mark Adams in the sense that it's the same sort of path, you know.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: So I think I think this is great.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: I think it's something that we can look forward to seeing a different take on the offense.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: I know we kind of had some complaints about it this past season, maybe not quite as much as before uh this the season before, but that definitely's definitely still there.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: We definitely had our grumbles about it.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I think that was more of a personnel thing than anything.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously, you saw with with Barr Peary, he was brought in as the offensive guy, and I think him and Adams kind of mutually agreed that it wasn't working out between the two of them.
- 11:25SPEAKER_03: And uh maybe Peary wanted a little more uh say-so in the offense, and Mark Adams kind of stepped in and you know it they just didn't vibe really well, and so that's why Peary was gone after a season.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: But now bringing in Green, I think it'll be much better.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: And a lot of people were asking when Green was initially hired, is he gonna be this kind of offensive coordinator type for Texas Tech basketball?
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: You know, because Mark Adams obviously takes control of the defense, he's a defensive-minded head coach.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: And uh, is Steve Green gonna be in charge of the offense?
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: And now when we're bringing it back here to when Chris Beard and Mark Adams were both here, Mark Adams was a defensive coordinator type coach for the Chris Beard Texas Tech teams.
- 12:09SPEAKER_03: I mean, he controlled the defense.
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: I don't think under Mark Adams, we're gonna have a coordinator, you know, quote unquote.
- 12:17SPEAKER_03: I think he has charge of what goes on.
- 12:20SPEAKER_03: And now Green is obviously very uh, you know, he's been at it a long time.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: He's a very good offensive head coach, he's very smart on that end of the floor.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: But I think Mark Adams has some say in how he wants to see this offense flow.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: And uh he's not just gonna be like, okay, here you go, Green.
- 12:40SPEAKER_03: It's your, you know, when we're on offense, it's all you.
- 12:43SPEAKER_03: He's not gonna do that.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: He's not that type of head coach.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: Um, now I think Chris Beard was that type of head coach.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: Chris Beard was like, hey, you take control of the defense, I'll I'll focus on you know, personnel, uh, you know, being the leader of the team per se, and all that kind of stuff.
- 12:57SPEAKER_03: I think Mark Adams does a little bit more, and that's why I don't really, you know, agree with the sentiment of he's he's running the offense.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: You know, I think it's a team effort here, and I think all these coaches kind of go at it together instead of one guy doing one thing, you know.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely, man.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: And I I think I think he nailed it.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: I think Mark Adams is a much more involved coach than Chris Beard.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: Um, because he he's very focused in on the team.
- 13:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's still very much a part of the community, but you don't see Mark Adams out there selling the team or anything like that in the sense that Chris Beard was heals, you know, Chris Beard was much more of a marketer, uh, more so than than a basketball coach.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: Uh, so I think I obviously we prefer that because Mark Adams doesn't have to sell a thing anymore, you know, it's it's sold.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: So it I think I'm totally with you.
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: And whenever you listen to like interviews with other play uh former players about the dynamics of the old regime, um, was that Mark Adams was like always trying to be involved with everything.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: Like he was he was always trying to coach no matter what side of the ball it was.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: So I'm I'm with you, man.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: I think that he's too involved with a coach, too much of a basketball coach.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: It's just this sport is just too back and forth to be focused on one side the entire time as a head coach.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: So it's I I'm with you, but hopefully he does bring in obviously new fresh ideas.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: That's the point, kind of opens the book a bit.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: Uh that's why you get multiple coaches to you know have a say in these things.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: But I'm with you.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: Obviously, I think the executive power is still towards the big guy.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: So uh excited about Steve Green coming in, excited about Al Pinkins, excited about this basketball team, yeah.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: Uh coming up with Fardos now, officially gonna be at Red Raiders.
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: So gonna see some big maple action for Texas Tech next year.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: That'll be nice.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: Um, absolutely, man.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we should we should also mention we're recording right now, it is Wednesday.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: Apparently, at the beginning of the day, we were hearing some news about Elijah Fisher, the five-star class of 2023 commit.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: Uh, he's got some crystal balls coming towards Texas Tech.
- 14:53SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's you know, I'm not gonna say this may sound stupid because this podcast is gonna come out before he commits tomorrow, but I'm really thinking it's gonna happen for Texas Tech.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: We're gonna get Elijah Fisher.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: I think he's going to be a red raider.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: I think he's going to reclassify to the class of 2022, according to some of the things that we've heard from people.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: And I think he's going to be on the team next season.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, I guess we'll go into more detail on him when he actually does commit.
- 15:23SPEAKER_03: But um, if we do end up getting him, it would be such a massive pickup for Mark Adams.
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, the best recruit in potentially in Texas Tech history.
- 15:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, we got we got guys like Damari Burnett, who was a five-star McDonald's all-American.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: This guy is right there with it.
- 15:39SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's out of Canada.
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: He's the I think he's the number 20 player in the class of 2023.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: Um, and if you've watched any highlights on him, this dude's unbelievable.
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: Like he's 6'6, he jump out of the building, he can do a little bit of everything.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: Uh, defensive-minded player as well.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: So that fits the Mark Adams system.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: Um, and I think you know, if if he comes to Texas Tech and decides to reclassify for next season, he's a starter, he's an automatic starter.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: You can't not, and even as a true freshman.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: Um, so keep your eye out for Elijah Fisher.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: By the time this podcast gets released, he should be committing probably a little later in the day.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, I just wanted to mention him.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: Do not be podcast jinxing us.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: I will be so mad if this episode is saying we got him, ladies and gentlemen.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: And then he can't go somewhere else.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: So do not do this to us.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: But how I mean, how funny would it be?
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: You know, obviously, we do we do get him.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: We have two Canadians on the team.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: Like, what is with us and and getting our pairs of foreigners?
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: You know, we got the French connection, and now we're gonna build the Keystone Pipeline from Canada, so it's just like, yeah, are the are these jokes hidden or no?
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: Is it no?
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: They're hidden, they're hidden.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: Okay, cool, yeah, cool.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: I I I you have to have a really high IQ to understand those those.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: We're very high IQ people over here.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: We're very high-brained, functioning people.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: So these come these come naturally to us, but man, just spectacular.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, especially if you get Mark Adams goes out and gets the uh the best recruit tech has ever had.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: I mean, Mr.
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: Burnett was uh was a fun idea, but it didn't exactly um no, it didn't work out, didn't exactly work out.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: Uh so hopefully we got our superstar who does work out, man.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: That'll be spectacular.
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: Great, great look for Mark Adams and just feature of the program, you know.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: That you guys remember what we keep saying, what the what was like the biggest scary when we hired Mark Adams?
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: Like, can he recruit this old guy, this old white guy from West Texas?
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: Can he recruit?
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: And it looks like he can, baby.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: So it's it's it's great news.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's kind of funny seeing the uh the differences in recruiting uh from Joey Maguire and Mark Adams.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: You know, Joey Maguire is like, we're gonna lock down Texas.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: We need West Texas boys, we need to get everybody from the state of Texas that we can.
- 17:58SPEAKER_03: And Mark Adams is just like, Yeah, I don't really care.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: You know, get them from anywhere, Canada, France, Chicago.
- 18:06SPEAKER_03: I really don't care as long as they come here and they enjoy their time and and I can coach them up and they know how to play defense.
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: I want them.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: So um, yeah, that I mean that's kind of just the differences in basketball and football recruiting, I guess.
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: It's more kind of location-based in in football, I think, than basketball.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: These guys come from all over the country to come to Texas Tech.
- 18:26SPEAKER_03: So that's a really cool deal that you can get a guy who uh is originally from Canada, goes to Utah Valley State, and then ends up in Lubbock, Texas, or like Davion, uh Davion Warren coming from Hampton and New York, Adonis Arms has been around the block, you know, Bryson Williams, obviously from Texas.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, this it's it's awesome.
- 18:45SPEAKER_03: It's awesome.
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: I I love what Mark Adams is doing.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, and he absolutely can recruit.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: Okay, can we can we please shut the heck up about you can't recruit the Lubbock if we're getting people from from Italy, France, Canada, and then New York, and like come on.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: How about how about enough of that?
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: It's too far from Dallas, yeah.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: Well, it's pretty damn far from Paris, too.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, I mean, not that much further, but come on.
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: Planes are a thing, people.
- 19:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, planes are uh we're not all on horseback anymore.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: We can make it to Lubbock, Texas.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: Good thing Lubbock built that one building, that new brand new idea in a in a city of an airport.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: So good thing we have one of those.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's like five minutes from Gambas.
- 19:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 19:30SPEAKER_03: But yeah, that narrative has always been false.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: It's just we haven't had the right people.
- 19:34SPEAKER_03: So I think we have a bunch of the right people right now with Joey McGuire, Tim Tadlock, and Mark Adams.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: So um, I guess since we're on the basketball topic, let's just talk about that before we start getting into baseball and and talk about the brand and stuff like that.
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: So um I let's let's talk Kevin McCullough for a second.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: Just I mean, we don't have to hit it very long, but um obviously, you know, he comes out his third announcement on social media.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: He finally decides that if he is going to return to college, he's going to Kansas.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: He's gonna be a Jayhawk next season.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: Um, Tristan, what are your thoughts on uh on K Mac and how he approached this whole situation?
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: I'm just really disappointed.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: I don't even think I'm that mad.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: I think I'm just disappointed because I think he'll he sold us on a character that apparently isn't really there.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: I'm not just sitting there, sitting here, you know, ragging on a young man who wants to do what's best for him.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: But you know, you you can't just sit here and and and you know, preach to the people who adore you, saying that I'm Red Raider for life.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: I would never go anywhere, I wouldn't follow that guy to Austin.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: I want to move anywhere else, this is where I want to be for that coach.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: And it's just to see him bail on us and go to an interconference rival, the big the bet the best basketball team in the conference, uh, it just hurts, you know, and it makes us look like we're not enough that Texatech is a stepping stone, that it's not a Kansas.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: And I know it's not a Kansas, but you you leaving for Kansas makes us less than a Kansas, you know, like it kind of subtracts our value in that sense for in the with that kind of move.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: But obviously that that that's how I would initially feel.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: But the good news is is everything's kind of starting to make sense.
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: You know, we're we're getting these phenomenal players coming in that at least neutralize the loss performance-wise.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: And maybe even we we're we're maybe even getting better without them.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: So it's just seeing us land these incredible players, even though our quote unquote leader and like culture guy is bailing on us, I think says a lot about the fortitude of what we've built in Lubing, Texas, and that it's it's not it doesn't just sit on one kid that it's it's it's the community and the in the in the in the school and the program that Mark Adams is putting together for us.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: So that's how I feel about it, man.
- 21:59SPEAKER_02: It's just I would just say disappointed that you know I feel a little duped and kind of feel a little silly because you know anytime Annie, my fiance would ask me who my favorite player is, it's like I gotta give it to K Mac because he's uh he's the red raider on the team through and through, and because you know he's the transition guy.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: But kind of sucks that I said that, and this is what's happened.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: That's how I feel about it.
- 22:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, my statement on Kevin McCullough.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: Uh Kevin McCullough was a red raider, and now Kevin McCullough is a Jayhawk.
- 22:31SPEAKER_03: That's my statement.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: That's that's it.
- 22:34SPEAKER_03: I don't I like I'm I'm not really, you know, obviously the destination is not great.
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: I I hate that we have to play against the guy because he is a good defensive player.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: He's a an and in the right system, in the right role, he can be uh, you know, really effective on the offensive end.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: Um, the disappointing part is that his dad's an alumni, you know, he's uh he he played here for four years, you know.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: He um, you know, was kind of like you said, the culture guy at Texas Tech.
- 23:07SPEAKER_03: Um now I think we're gonna be fine, you know.
- 23:11SPEAKER_03: I think Texas Tech has done a great job of bouncing back every single year.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: Um, but you're just kind of disappointed in the in the destination, I think, more than anything.
- 23:22SPEAKER_03: Like why why Kansas?
- 23:23SPEAKER_03: Why?
- 23:24SPEAKER_03: Why do you because now you're not just uh you know, not choosing to be a red raider, but you're choosing to be a direct interconference rival, which uh to me is it it it'll piss off the fan base.
- 23:39SPEAKER_03: And now, you know, you do you, man.
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: You do what you think is best.
- 23:43SPEAKER_03: Obviously, playing for Bill self can't hurt, but I don't know what he's expecting over there.
- 23:48SPEAKER_03: I don't know, he I don't know if he's expecting to play point guard over there.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: I don't know because right now, just from the social media, you know, browsing I've seen from Kansas fans, these guys are thinking he's gonna be a three, you know, a four, a three.
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: He's he's gonna be kind of a complimentary piece.
- 24:03SPEAKER_03: He's not gonna be, you know, the guy at Kansas.
- 24:06SPEAKER_03: And if he were to stay at Texas Tech, he would have been the guy, or he would have been at least beloved like he was the guy, you know.
- 24:12SPEAKER_03: So uh I we obviously don't know all the inner workings of these kind of decisions, and the kid's allowed to make the decision that he wants to make.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, the the destination is the most disappointing part for me.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and at the end of the day, the blowback is righteous, it's justified.
- 24:29SPEAKER_02: So it's fine.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: And whenever you come, whenever you come to Lubbock and you get booed out the building, it's what you get, man.
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's it's you're either a hero or a zero in this situation that you personally chose.
- 24:39SPEAKER_02: You know, this isn't uh what was me situation, this is self-inflicted.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: Willingly, you willingly became an opponent.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: That's that's how I feel about it.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: So if you if you know if he's peace if he's feeling all whiny about it, like bro, you did this yourself.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: So that's how I feel about that.
- 24:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so well, that'll do it.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: Kevin McCullough's time as a red raider is over, and we're gonna be just fine.
- 24:58SPEAKER_03: So weird, weird sentence to say, but yes, yeah, it definitely would not end well.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: The same thing would have happened if you talked to me about Chris Beard in 2019.
- 25:07SPEAKER_03: So uh we keep moving on from this stuff and we end up just fine out of it.
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: So I believe in Texas Tech and Mark Adams, but um one last basketball thing we have the basketball tournament coming up.
- 25:20SPEAKER_03: I don't know if y'all have been seeing this, but this TBT, which stands for the basketball tournament, coming up.
- 25:26SPEAKER_03: It's a uh it happens every year.
- 25:27SPEAKER_03: I don't know if they've kind of if they haven't done it the last few years because of COVID, but they're definitely doing it this year.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: Takes place this summer, and Texas Tech has a team.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: They have so if y'all, if y'all are familiar with the basketball tournament, it's a bunch of teams that get together, they play a massive tournament, and usually they're made up of alumni of universities.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: Sometimes they'll just be random collections of players, sometimes they'll be uh like a your like a Euro team, or like I know they always have like division three alumni, so they just gather a bunch of players that play division three basketball and they'll all form a team.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: But Texas Tech is having a team called the Air Raiders, and right now we have three players officially joining the team for this uh for this tournament, and those three are Norrin Sodiase, Matt Mooney, and now announced today Zaire Smith coming in and joining the Air Raiders, dude.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: This is so cool!
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: This is so fun, man.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: Is this is that's is this the first year Tech's been able to pull it off?
- 26:30SPEAKER_03: No, I think Tech's had a team in the past.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: I think the they went by the Matadors and they had guys like Jay Crockett play, but they didn't have like a Zaire Smith level, like former NBA first round pick, like you know, Norren Sodiase, who was the team leader on a uh on a Final Four team.
- 26:49SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't know if they've had those type of guys, but this is uh I mean Matt Mooney was playing in the NBA like last season or two seasons ago.
- 26:58SPEAKER_03: Like they these guys are still young and like are really good at basketball.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're tech legends, man.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: This is so dang fun.
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: Will it be broadcasted?
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, they always show up.
- 27:07SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it's ESPN or Fox or something, they always broadcast these games.
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: Heck yeah, man.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: Oh, I I'm I'm hyped as hell for this.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: This is sick.
- 27:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and hopefully we'll have a guest on to kind of talk about the team next week.
- 27:19SPEAKER_03: We're still working on the details with that, but uh potentially keep an eye out for that.
- 27:23SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, I wanted to be the same.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: You're all over it right now.
- 27:27SPEAKER_03: These aren't podcast jinx, these are these are hopeful uh commitments that I believe are happening according to sources.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: Sounds a lot like a jinx, sir.
- 27:38SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay, whatever.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: If I'm wrong, then you can blame me.
- 27:41SPEAKER_03: But uh, but we're still working it out with that.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: So uh, but let's move on for basketball, let's talk baseball because right now, Texas Tech and Kansas State are playing in the first game of the Big 12 tournament.
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: Texas Tech, it's currently the top of the seventh.
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: They're up five-nothing on Kansas State.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, what am I gonna jinx this now too?
- 28:04SPEAKER_03: Saying yes, you know, Texas Tech in a good spot right now.
- 28:08SPEAKER_03: Not saying we're gonna win, but by the time y'all are listening to this, y'all will know the result.
- 28:12SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, Texas Tech playing well up five-nothing.
- 28:14SPEAKER_03: I think we play the winner of Oklahoma and West Virginia tomorrow.
- 28:19SPEAKER_03: So um, yeah, I mean, this Big 12 championship conference, well, conference tournament at the end of the year.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, don't go all cyclone on me.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: You I can't believe you're you're sitting here, you're you're sitting here going, we're in a great spot five and oh.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: Well, we were in a great spot against OU this past weekend as well, sir.
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: And we pulled it.
- 28:37SPEAKER_03: Well, we weren't up five and oh, we weren't up five oh against OU.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: But they were up like four to one and then ended up losing on on Thursday or Friday.
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: It was Thursday, I believe.
- 28:47SPEAKER_02: So what what the heck, man?
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: Don't do this to us.
- 28:50SPEAKER_03: Look, we're up five-o in the top of the seventh right now.
- 28:52SPEAKER_03: I'm just stating a fact.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: I just can't believe this.
- 28:55SPEAKER_03: We are doing right now.
- 28:56SPEAKER_03: Mason Molina is pitching.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: Uh apparently he's doing very well.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: He's still on the mound in the top of the seventh.
- 29:02SPEAKER_03: So, uh I mean they haven't scored yet.
- 29:04SPEAKER_03: So uh from Mason Molina's up and down first year here at Texas Tech, he's doing pretty well right now.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: You know, it's those all all 12 TCU fans are very thankful for the Sooners this past week.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: And I tell you what, yeah, that's uh anything else about baseball.
- 29:24SPEAKER_03: No, I mean, we should we should mention, yeah, we didn't end up winning the Big 12 because we blew the series to Oklahoma um at home in Lubbock.
- 29:33SPEAKER_03: Uh, we did end up, you know, scampering the last game there.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: So we did tie for second, I believe, with Oklahoma uh for the Big 12.
- 29:43SPEAKER_03: So we are the two seed in this Big 12 tournament right now.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, uh winning that series would have been great because obviously you would have been Big 12 champs.
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: Um, but hosting is the ultimate goal here.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: This is like doing well in the NCAA tournament and make it winning the regional, winning the super, win and go into the college role series.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: That's the ultimate goal here.
- 30:05SPEAKER_03: We love conference championships, banners fly forever.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: But you know, if we can win a couple games here in the Big 12 tournament, I think we still have a pretty good opportunity at a hosting spot.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we still have a goal, we still have a mission, and I think we still have eyes set on Omaha, man.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: And we're still a top 10 team.
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: So we we definitely have it's still the destiny is still in our hands, you know.
- 30:26SPEAKER_02: We just got to get through this tough tournament and see where we land.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: Um, because we still got plenty of baseball to play, and hopefully, we I mean, hopefully, we still have plenty of baseball to play.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: So, and I mean, not just that though, we also got some, even though even though we didn't get that darn trophy, but a couple of our players took on some honor honors as well.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: That is true.
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: We uh the Big 12 awards came out.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: Brandon Birdsell, your pitcher of the year in the Big 12.
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: Incredible, massive honor.
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, that dude was fantastic all season until until the OU game, but uh other other than the one OU game, he really was automatic all year.
- 31:00SPEAKER_03: Um, I I mean he he couldn't like he had the opportunity to go to the MLB draft.
- 31:05SPEAKER_03: I think he was drafted in the 11th round last year.
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: He decided I'm coming back to Texas Tech, I'm gonna finish what I started here, and he has been a fantastic pitcher for us, and he's getting awarded for it.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: So, this is I mean, congrats to him.
- 31:19SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, man.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: And he wasn't the only one either.
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: Uh, one of our players got freshman of the year as well.
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: Um that would be Hudson White winning freshman year.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: Yes, I was this close to pulling it up on Twitter.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: So it was up there.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: I mean, I Owen Washburn, I think he was on the uh all freshman team as well.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: And I think Mason Molina was too.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, I mean, Hudson White was fantastic all season long, hit some really timely, uh, timely, great plays.
- 31:47SPEAKER_03: Um, just he was awesome.
- 31:49SPEAKER_03: Uh uh our future is very bright with these guys at the helm.
- 31:53SPEAKER_03: Uh, and Hudson White's proven it there with their your freshman of the year.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, man.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, all in all, great season.
- 31:59SPEAKER_02: And now that you know we're here we are in the postseason.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: Couldn't ask for uh much more than that.
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: Uh, just one game away from a uh conference title is nothing to be upset about, um, especially whenever you're beating teams that were expected to do way better than you.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, we beat out UT and OSU who were uh preseason favorites, and so it's just this is obviously a great season, all in all.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: And uh we're not done yet.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: I can't wait to see what happens next.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: Well, and you just think about like all the complaining that Texas Tech fans did all season long.
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: Bullpen doesn't have anybody, you know, we're not hitting well, we're uh all sorts of stuff.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: Oh, fire the the the uh pitching coach.
- 32:39SPEAKER_03: Do all we heard all that from Texas Tech fans a lot of the year, and we ended up second in the Big 12 with a good chance at hosting a regional.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: Like, this is what Texas Tech baseball is now, man.
- 32:51SPEAKER_03: I mean, we are we're disappointed when we aren't like the a national seed now, winning the Big 12.
- 32:58SPEAKER_03: Like, that's this is still a fantastic season.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: Um, and I think with this group of guys, they have the potential to make a run in uh in the postseason.
- 33:08SPEAKER_03: So uh keep an eye out for everybody, you know, cheer them on.
- 33:11SPEAKER_03: Oh, looks like Kansas State just scored a run.
- 33:13SPEAKER_03: Five to one five to one now.
- 33:19SPEAKER_03: I believe we need a pitching change here for a second.
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: So if this I again, I just stated a fact.
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: We were up five to nothing.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: I said nothing of the sort that I I said nothing other than facts.
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: So no jinx here, my friend.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: Well, what what an absurd standard that you're you're you're that whenever your fans hold you to that standard, what it just speaks volumes to what Texas Tech is, you know, to expect what only the best teams in the country get every single year, and you expect that every single year now, man.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: You just you really couldn't ask for I mean it's kind of an absurd expectation, but it just speaks how much we do it to expect it every year, just incredible stuff, man.
- 34:05SPEAKER_02: We're just so good at baseball.
- 34:07SPEAKER_03: We're so lucky to have Tim Tadlock and a great uh great team.
- 34:10SPEAKER_03: Every four year in and year out wreck'em on baseball.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: So um, let's see what we got next.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: The brand episode one dropping.
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: We haven't talked about this yet, even after it was announced that we were going to have our own uh well, Texas Tech Football, that is, gonna have their own plus talking T where we do make it.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: We're always involved in these decisions, guys.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: We're just off camera the whole time, but we're there.
- 34:39SPEAKER_03: No, uh Texas Tech Football has a television show on ESPN Plus called The Brand.
- 34:45SPEAKER_03: I'm sure most of y'all have watched it.
- 34:47SPEAKER_03: Uh the first episode dropped uh on Tuesday, they're coming out every Tuesday.
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: I believe there's gonna be four total episodes, but um really cool, man.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: Uh we haven't seen we haven't seen anything like this at Texas Tech.
- 35:01SPEAKER_02: No, man, it's really cool.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: I mean, episode one, I know you're you I was hearing you saying that, you know, I wish we saw a little more, uh, but episode one really kind of turned out to be a uh a setup episode so you could see meet all the coaches.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: It was kind of like a a meet and greet with the feature of the program.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: And I thought that was really cool.
- 35:18SPEAKER_02: I thought it was really cool getting to know who these guys are that are leading your program.
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: I just the the the level of transparent and community that Joey McGuire has built with this football team is something I've never seen before on Lubbock uh on the Lubbock campus.
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: It's just it's so great to see a guy that wants the fans seeing what's going on at all times because that just gets the fans so much more involved, and it makes you feel like you have so much more stake in the program.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's awesome.
- 35:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, I like I wasn't disappointed in the episode.
- 35:49SPEAKER_03: Don't get me wrong.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: Like, I really enjoy the B role.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: You have some really cool stuff, like you can find little things in the details that kind of give you get you hyped up.
- 35:58SPEAKER_03: Like, I was looking at the most vocal players, like who's gonna step up and be kind of your leader?
- 36:04SPEAKER_03: It looks like Rabbit's got a huge role in this team.
- 36:06SPEAKER_03: It looks like Miles Price is really gonna be vocal and be one of the leaders of the offense.
- 36:11SPEAKER_03: Sorodric was leading some drills.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's the kind of stuff that I'm looking for in this series.
- 36:16SPEAKER_03: Like, who, like, what are they not necessarily showing us, but it shows on the on on TV.
- 36:24SPEAKER_03: So uh it was cool, you know, all the coaches kind of telling you what the brand is.
- 36:29SPEAKER_03: It kind of shows how uh together everybody is on this goal, you know, everybody has the same idea of what the brand is, you know.
- 36:37SPEAKER_03: Everybody, yeah, I think every coach said basically the same thing for that like 10 minute segment.
- 36:42SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, and and if you're not familiar with like you know, the coaching, yeah, the coaching hires and all that this offseason, if you weren't keeping up with it, you got to meet everybody, you got to see who's in who's the defensive line coach, who's the outside linebackers coach, who the tight end, you know, um, and all that good stuff.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: So uh, and Joey, I mean, Joey's speeches are just fantastic.
- 37:05SPEAKER_03: Who wouldn't want to play for that guy?
- 37:07SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, man.
- 37:08SPEAKER_02: He speaks like a guy that's been there before, you know, he's just so much experience pouring out onto these young men.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: Um, and I'm just I'm glad we got to hear from DeRuder for once, you know, that this guy's just kind of been there, and I haven't heard a single thing from this guy, and we're finally hearing from which is cool because I mean, obviously, as tech fans, yeah, the offense is awesome, but what's going on on defense?
- 37:29SPEAKER_02: Please tell us what's going on on defense.
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: So it's great to finally see some some more of that.
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: And whose idea do you think this this was?
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: Do you think this was like a Joey plan?
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: It was Joey's idea.
- 37:39SPEAKER_02: We should turn this into a show.
- 37:41SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 37:41SPEAKER_03: Joey, Joey went about this, and that's what Joey's been about since he got here.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: Market the brand, he's been active on social media, he has been, you know, developing this television show, he's been recruiting like crazy.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: Like he wants to let people know who Texas Tech is, and that's what he's doing with this show.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: It's awesome, and it's obviously another great recruiting tool.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: You know, the recruit doesn't have to be in love to see what's going on or how things run at in at Lubbock, Texas.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: And hey, you come to Texas Tech, maybe you could be on a freaking TV show on ESBN.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: That's pretty darn cool.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 38:15SPEAKER_03: And uh, yeah, DeRuder, like I like to your to your other point, DeRuder has he's older, he's been around the block, you know, he's not super active on social media, he's probably not very good at it.
- 38:25SPEAKER_03: So, yeah, it is cool to kind of seeing him in front of the camera talking about this.
- 38:29SPEAKER_03: And we should have a really experienced defense, you know, coming in with the uh a really good secondary.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: You got some experienced guys on the defensive line.
- 38:36SPEAKER_03: So, um, you know, I I also think Joey has a big part in this defense as well.
- 38:41SPEAKER_03: We saw him uh coaching the linebackers in one of the drills in the first episode, and uh he did that at Baylor, he's always coaching defense, whatever position coach that he was supposed to be, uh, even though he was primarily a recruiter at Baylor, but uh, you know, he would coach whatever position on defense.
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, this is just really cool.
- 38:58SPEAKER_03: Uh, there was also a great article written today by Sam Kahn of the Athletic, kind of highlighting Joey's whole time here.
- 39:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, he really broke down from the day he was hired to what he has done recruiting-wise and how you know Texas Tech is is fared for a pretty good future with him on the recruiting trail.
- 39:18SPEAKER_03: So uh if you haven't go check that out, it's by Sam Kahn of the Athletic.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Joey Maguire, Sam makes Joey Maguire sound like the boss you'd love to have because he likes he's he seems he's such a hands-off guy in the sense that he lets his he lets his guys have the responsibility.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's it's really not a um uh a micromanaged program, it sounds like at all.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: It sounds like he trusts his his his the people that he hired to do their jobs because like they don't have to go to him to offer scholarships to kids.
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: He says, You have that power to go for it and do that.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: So that's I think that's why you're seeing us act so rapidly in their in in recruiting, is because the just the sheer amount of speed and efficiency that are the freedom of letting your staff make these calls does, and you're you're really seeing it right now.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: And it's really you could definitely tell that Stan was impressed whenever he was writing it.
- 40:09SPEAKER_02: And I think that's just great science to an experienced guy, be impressed with what's going on at TechSech.
- 40:14SPEAKER_02: It's it's just so dang cool, man.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: And just seeing the obvious improvements that we're already seeing within the program from the past couple of administrations, it's it's pretty damn awesome.
- 40:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he also highlighted stuff that we talked about before, like the fact that Joey gets on kids early, like he's the first either Power Five or uh, you know, first like bigger school to offer a kid, and he's not afraid if they're not rated yet or anything like that.
- 40:39SPEAKER_03: Like um, you know, what they brought up Calvin Simpson Hunt and how he is a Texas Tech commit, and now he has offers from Alabama, Texas, Michigan, all that, you know, and and he committed Texas Tech because he Joey Maguire was one of the first ones to reach out.
- 40:53SPEAKER_03: And so um one of the one of the other parts of this article that I thought was interesting was uh kind of the guys they look at, you know, they look at the same thing.
- 41:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they look at a specific style of player, and really it's just based on athleticism, it's based on intangibles, it's based on uh not necessarily football skill, but just you know, because he really he much like Mark Adams actually believes he can coach up a player to do something at Texas Tech, and so uh that was really cool about it.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: I don't think you and I have been more in sync on an idea because I was about to give that whole spiel that you just did that they have they know what they're looking for, they can they can coach in the football part, they need the other part to come in with them, not necessarily given to them.
- 41:39SPEAKER_02: So I think that's what Tex Tech's been missing, man.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: You know, I just uh we were we've you know, I think we've been trying to do things too traditional by focusing on what highly rated players in that position and not getting them as often as we like, rather than finding guys who could be that piece.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: You know, it's kind of like a it's it's uh it's kind of cliche to say that a tech program needs to go out and find these diamonds in the rough and build them into something special.
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: Um, but I think you really are seeing that's what's happening in an actual sense rather than just a a wing-in-it sense.
- 42:12SPEAKER_02: I don't think we're just taking flyers, I think we are identifying what we need and we'll turn them into what they could be.
- 42:19SPEAKER_02: You know, it's turn them into great players rather than just trying to get what we can, which is kind of how it's felt lately.
- 42:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 42:28SPEAKER_03: I think uh that he's he's been doing a great job so far.
- 42:31SPEAKER_03: 20 commits uh for the class of 2023.
- 42:34SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, there was also kind of a part in the article where it's like, I mean, you know, don't don't assume that all 20 of these guys are gonna stay, uh, because you know that's a lot of commits.
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: And if you're getting on a guy early, you know, it's he's bound to he's bound to get a few more offers and you know check out other schools.
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, obviously he's done a great job.
- 42:55SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm super hyped with what Joey's done.
- 42:57SPEAKER_03: And and by the way, it is now five to three Texas Tech against Kansas State.
- 43:05SPEAKER_03: It's the middle of the seventh now.
- 43:07SPEAKER_03: We got out of that awful inning.
- 43:08SPEAKER_03: Uh Molina was pulled for Divine, and Divine got us out of that inning.
- 43:13SPEAKER_03: So two more, two more innings.
- 43:16SPEAKER_03: Uh, tech is up five to three right now.
- 43:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, while we're still on the uh the Joey Maguire love train, uh, I thought it was pretty cool that the you know hearing from the high school coaches and seeing what they had to say about him as well.
- 43:26SPEAKER_02: Um, obviously they have that connection with Joe Wade because he's one of them, but just to hear the they they talked about him like so much like that, he was so much different, you know.
- 43:34SPEAKER_02: And like he just he really respected what they had to say rather than just I'm here to see this these groups of kids.
- 43:41SPEAKER_02: No, but he knows he really would listen to them whenever he told them that you should take a look at this kid.
- 43:44SPEAKER_02: And I I love that.
- 43:46SPEAKER_02: And and I loved his plan to to really build a wall around West Texas.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: It was so cool that he assigned his staff members to certain zones, they can only look at those zones, you know, and that you have to go get the best kids in those zones, kind of thing.
- 43:59SPEAKER_02: So I I love It I just I think it just keeps coming back to whenever we hired him and you run in that big old binder with the Kirby or whatever it was, and just he has a plan.
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: The guy has a plan and a vision, and it's just it's so crazy how well he's implementing said plan.
- 44:13SPEAKER_02: It's like he was made to come to Texas Tech with this plan.
- 44:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 44:19SPEAKER_03: Uh I he couldn't have had a better start at Texas Tech.
- 44:23SPEAKER_03: Now he just needs to coach up some games, and we'll really see how Joey is as a coach.
- 44:27SPEAKER_03: But everything he's done so far, fantastic.
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: Um, but let's let's kind of move on.
- 44:33SPEAKER_03: We have, I think, just one more thing, and then we'll get to song of the week.
- 44:36SPEAKER_03: Um, Ludwig, our boy, Swedish fish, the Swedish fish, the Swedish fish himself, Ludwig Aberg winning the Ben Hogan Award, which is the top male golfer award.
- 44:48SPEAKER_03: And he's been fantastic all season long.
- 44:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, he was great last year.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: He's gonna be, I mean, he's a future star in golf.
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he really is.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, and to see, you know, a Texas tech guy, we have a lot of good golf teams at in the Big 12.
- 45:03SPEAKER_03: You know, I think Oklahoma State has a really uh a really elite program.
- 45:07SPEAKER_03: Texas obviously has some great players that have come out of there, but uh Ludwig is he's a future star, man.
- 45:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, we're gonna see him playing in some really, really big golf tournaments someday.
- 45:18SPEAKER_02: Oh, absolutely, man.
- 45:19SPEAKER_02: And it's so great for him to be bringing in some hardware and uh to to the campus while he's while he's still a red raider.
- 45:24SPEAKER_02: I mean, he'll always be a red raider, obviously, but it's just so cool, man.
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: The Swedish fish doing it, dude.
- 45:29SPEAKER_02: And uh, it's just it's it's just so crazy how we recruited him.
- 45:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, Sweden's really far from Lubbock, and it's really hard to recruit to Lubbock, you know.
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: It's just is that joke?
- 45:39SPEAKER_02: Did that joke lose all of its steam?
- 45:41SPEAKER_03: Well, you said it kind of seriously, and I was like, wait a minute, we just made the point that it wasn't hard to recruit to Lubbock.
- 45:47SPEAKER_03: No, it's yeah, we get guys internationally, we do it for Dragon Field too.
- 45:52SPEAKER_03: West Kitley gets people from freaking all over them, all over the world to come to Lubbock, Texas, and we do the same thing with golf.
- 46:00SPEAKER_03: And it's I mean, it's not hard to recruit here.
- 46:02SPEAKER_02: No, not at all, man.
- 46:03SPEAKER_02: Just great things from the from the greens as well.
- 46:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 46:07SPEAKER_03: So, all right, let's go.
- 46:10SPEAKER_03: Song of the week to kind of end her off here.
- 46:12SPEAKER_03: What you got, Tristan?
- 46:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man, I'm going old school on this one.
- 46:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, I say old school, uh, it's he's not that old, but he's one of the staples in the uh Texas red dirt country scene.
- 46:22SPEAKER_02: I'm sure anyone that's that that's is is aware of him.
- 46:25SPEAKER_02: It's Jason Bolin and the Stragglers.
- 46:28SPEAKER_02: If you're aware of the genre, you're aware of him, most likely.
- 46:30SPEAKER_02: Um, and I just wanted to say that the guy's still got it, you know, he's still putting out albums and he's still putting out jams.
- 46:36SPEAKER_02: This song's really fun.
- 46:37SPEAKER_02: It's called The Light Saw Me off his newest album.
- 46:40SPEAKER_02: And it's it's funny because it's about this guy who goes fishing and gets abducted by aliens.
- 46:47SPEAKER_02: So it's it's a really funny song.
- 46:48SPEAKER_02: You know, you just you don't hear songs like that, they don't take themselves too seriously.
- 46:52SPEAKER_02: And so it's it's a fun one, it's a jam.
- 46:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, he really leans into the more rock, country rock side.
- 46:56SPEAKER_02: So I'm going with The Light Saw Me, Jason Bolin, and the Stragglers.
- 47:15SPEAKER_03: Very nice.
- 47:16SPEAKER_03: I literally never heard one time of of that guy, never once.
- 47:22SPEAKER_02: I I'm surprised, man.
- 47:23SPEAKER_02: You should probably give him a listen.
- 47:24SPEAKER_02: Definitely, like we're somewhere down in Texas, is an absolute classic in the uh red dirt scene.
- 47:28SPEAKER_02: So give that a listen after you plug this one in.
- 47:31SPEAKER_03: Right on, man.
- 47:31SPEAKER_03: We'll do.
- 47:32SPEAKER_03: Uh, my song of the week.
- 47:34SPEAKER_03: Uh, you probably saw this coming because we saw each other this weekend.
- 47:38SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, we had a good old time in Fredericksburg.
- 47:41SPEAKER_03: Uh went when with the ladies, uh, went with the, you know, just a group of friends going and taking a wine trip down there in the Napa Valley of Texas.
- 47:50SPEAKER_03: My song of the week, uh, after a night of drinking and hanging out and listening to music, I threw on this one.
- 47:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's Jamestown Ferry by Charlie Crockett, and uh, we absolutely had a ball with it.
- 48:04SPEAKER_03: We wore that song out.
- 48:06SPEAKER_02: We listened to that song like five times within an hour.
- 48:10SPEAKER_02: Like, that's that's how you know.
- 48:11SPEAKER_02: Like, we we had we had dug into the grape juice that we were just oh that song's so good.
- 48:17SPEAKER_02: Play it again.
- 48:18SPEAKER_02: You know, it's just a good good great pick with uh throwing him in there.
- 48:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 48:23SPEAKER_03: That was Jamestown Fairy Charlie Crockett.
- 48:30SPEAKER_00: It's not a hot day, January, like she said it'd be if she ever left me.
- 48:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, but yeah, man.
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: Um, I think I think that's I'm basically gonna do it.
- 48:53SPEAKER_03: I did want to say one thing uh to end off the podcast here.
- 48:56SPEAKER_03: Um, and that's you know, you you and me grew up in uh North San Antonio, and that's um about a hundred miles east of Uvalde.
- 49:05SPEAKER_03: And uh with everything that happened yesterday, uh the shooting that killed 19 kids and um and two adults over there at uh at the elementary school, um, you know, we just wanted to send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and uh the community of Uvaldi because um this is just it's it's a tragedy that we've seen far too often before.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: Um you know, there's just it it does it never gets easier to see these sort of things, and and I hate that we see it so much as a nation, you know, we're hurting and and we need to find some change somewhere.
- 49:36SPEAKER_03: Um, we don't like to get political on this podcast.
- 49:39SPEAKER_03: We don't have the answers to this, but um, you know, as as people, you know, we really feel for everybody involved in this situation, and uh it's it's just a tragedy.
- 49:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely, man.
- 49:51SPEAKER_02: Uh prayers to those who are hurting the most.
- 49:53SPEAKER_02: Just just a tragedy, you know, the most innocent among us.
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: So, but obviously we all know how how how to feel about it.
- 49:59SPEAKER_02: We know how we feel about it, and it's just this uh obviously just all we can do now is be there for the community.
- 50:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there are ways to help.
- 50:08SPEAKER_03: Um, I know I know a lot of people are saying uh donate blood.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: Uh that's a big that's a big thing right now.
- 50:14SPEAKER_03: So if you are looking for ways to help, there's uh multiple donations.
- 50:18SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's GoFundMe's, there's all sorts of stuff.
- 50:20SPEAKER_03: Just Google, um, you know, help help you valley and and you'll find some things.
- 50:24SPEAKER_03: And uh, so if you are willing, if you have uh extra money to donate and all that, uh I'd recommend it.
- 50:30SPEAKER_03: Um, because you know, this is just an awful thing and and something we need to move past together and get better together with.
- 50:36SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, man.
- 50:37SPEAKER_02: So great now, great top off there, sir.
- 50:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 50:40SPEAKER_03: So that's gonna do it here for this episode.
- 50:42SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're gonna end it off like we always do with some plugs.

- 51:38SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: This just doesn't get any better than this.
- 51:43SPEAKER_05: I would like to thank uh Stephen M.
- 51:45SPEAKER_01: Tristan.
- 51:46SPEAKER_05: This is incredible.
- 51:47SPEAKER_05: These guys have a passion and a love for this school.
