- 2:01Speaker 1: the Eagle, sports editor Robert Sessa almost gave you a
- 2:05Speaker 1: promotion there, Cease. Hey, long as I get more money. Exactly.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I was going to give you a little bump in salary.
- 2:13Speaker 1: You may have the wrong one. Can you hear me?
- 2:14Speaker 1: You may have the wrong one. Oh, I can hear you,
- 2:16Speaker 1: but I can't hear you here. That's fine. You may
- 2:18Speaker 1: have the wrong one plugged in. See if that. I
- 2:21Speaker 1: didn't check them.
- 2:22Speaker 7: There you go.
- 2:22Speaker 1: It's amazing how that works.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Traffic doesn't matter.
- 2:25Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 2:26Speaker 1: People on Briarcrest, get off of Briarcrest. We're trying to
- 2:30Speaker 1: do a show here.
- 2:30Speaker 3: You know, I do appreciate the two people that let
- 2:32Speaker 3: me in. I had to go over and I go,
- 2:33Speaker 3: you know, there's a lot of little listeners that want
- 2:35Speaker 3: to show I get here.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I tell you what, if they would have known you're
- 2:38Speaker 1: on my show, you never would have gotten here.
- 2:40Speaker 7: There is no worse intersection than that one right there.
- 2:44Speaker 7: Over there by, you know, once you... Pass the Chick-fil-A. Yeah,
- 2:47Speaker 7: it's terrible. You know, it was like Brian High, that
- 2:49Speaker 7: whole thing.
- 2:49Speaker 1: No, it's awful.
- 2:50Speaker 7: You can wait, like, I mean, I used to drive
- 2:54Speaker 7: from Fort Worth to North Dallas every day, but I was, like, driving.
- 2:57Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Sitting at that light, like, four times, right? Oh, no,
- 3:00Speaker 1: it's awful.
- 3:00Speaker 7: That's the worst intersection.
- 3:01Speaker 1: It's just awful.
- 3:02Speaker 7: But I love it now even more with all the
- 3:04Speaker 7: construction going on.
- 3:05Speaker 1: And Texas and university ain't real great either.
- 3:07Speaker 7: Well, you're right.
- 3:08Speaker 1: That main light. I sat through one today because of
- 3:11Speaker 1: stupid people.
- 3:12Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Thanks for listening, stupid people. Yeah, if you're one of them,
- 3:18Speaker 1: quit driving. You're killing me. So I was just saying
- 3:23Speaker 1: before we started. Listen to it. So A & M
- 3:27Speaker 1: did what I think would be the formula for this
- 3:31Speaker 1: team this year to win game seats on Saturday night, right?
- 3:34Speaker 3: I agree with it 100%. Only I think Arkansas is
- 3:38Speaker 3: the worst team in the SEC.
- 3:39Speaker 1: I agree with that. Now, that was going to be
- 3:41Speaker 1: my other caveat.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Now, that being said, everybody is talent in the SEC.
- 3:46Speaker 7: I think Arkansas should change its mascot from the Razorbacks
- 3:50Speaker 7: to the Antibiotics because they are just what the doctor
- 3:53Speaker 7: ordered for any sick team. Because, I mean, they are
- 3:56Speaker 7: really bad.
- 3:56Speaker 1: They're not very good.
- 3:57Speaker 7: No, they are bad.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:59Speaker 7: And, like, A & M had to, like, really try
- 4:00Speaker 7: not to score again, you know, up 34-7. Yeah.
- 4:03Speaker 1: They're not very good. No.
- 4:05Speaker 7: I mean, they don't do anything well.
- 4:07Speaker 1: I feel bad for the coach when you consider... They
- 4:09Speaker 1: have one good receiver.
- 4:10Speaker 7: I would go so far as to say they're not
- 4:12Speaker 7: going to win a conference game. I don't think so.
- 4:15Speaker 1: They might not. I don't have their... Well, I do
- 4:17Speaker 1: have their schedule. I'll look at that. I was going
- 4:19Speaker 1: to look.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Their only chance is if South Carolina... I think that's
- 4:22Speaker 3: the only one because South Carolina might... Quit?
- 4:25Speaker 1: They might leave the SEC in a couple weeks. I've
- 4:29Speaker 1: got their schedule. But my point being, it might be
- 4:33Speaker 1: a little bit difficult... To have that kind of style
- 4:39Speaker 1: against it. And let's just start with Saturday because Missouri
- 4:43Speaker 1: stuffed the run on Saturday.
- 4:45Speaker 3: You know what was interesting, Chip? I did some research
- 4:47Speaker 3: on that. Someone goes, wow, great idea, Sussner. But Missouri
- 4:50Speaker 3: has some defensive ends that are hurt.
- 4:53Speaker 1: They do. They're too fast.
- 4:54Speaker 3: They went with three defensive tackles.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:57Speaker 3: But they're quick. One thing you can always know about
- 5:00Speaker 3: over the years, Missouri.
- 5:01Speaker 1: They've had linemen now.
- 5:02Speaker 3: They had quick people, defensive end linebackers.
- 5:04Speaker 1: They have had linemen. You're right.
- 5:06Speaker 3: So when I heard they went with three defensive tackles
- 5:10Speaker 3: and they held Bada like 16 yards.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yes. And Florida to 47 yards. Yes.
- 5:15Speaker 3: I said A & M could be in trouble.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Because I think. what you touched on, Edwards looks so
- 5:22Speaker 3: good running the ball. And they finally used the wheels
- 5:26Speaker 3: of Reed. So that's something you can almost beat anybody,
- 5:31Speaker 3: but not if you can't win the point of attack.
- 5:34Speaker 3: If suddenly they take Edwards and Owens away, and they're
- 5:37Speaker 3: concentrating on Reed, then I think A & M' s.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Going to be in trouble. Well, why wouldn't you do that?
- 5:44Speaker 3: And I'm interested, and you touch always this time, Chip, uh,
- 5:48Speaker 3: Missouri's had three tough games in a row now.
- 5:50Speaker 1: They have. I think A & M' s getting there. If
- 5:53Speaker 1: you've got to play them, this is a good time
- 5:55Speaker 1: to do it. And 11 a.m. in the morning. And
- 5:57Speaker 1: they were fired up on Saturday. I mean, this was
- 6:01Speaker 1: their stand. And we've seen this every week of this season,
- 6:06Speaker 1: which has made it unique. These road games have been
- 6:10Speaker 1: so difficult. And all of these early games, it seems
- 6:14Speaker 1: like the home team has just been frothing. And you're going, oh, wow.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And then the next week, they have to go on
- 6:22Speaker 1: the road like Florida did. You go, well... I thought
- 6:25Speaker 1: they were good.
- 6:26Speaker 7: I'll point out, though, that I think I said maybe
- 6:28Speaker 7: A & M' s catching LSU at a good time.
- 6:30Speaker 1: You did. You're not supposed to bring that up. Yeah,
- 6:34Speaker 1: don't bring that up.
- 6:35Speaker 7: That Missouri team is really impressive. But, I mean, here's
- 6:38Speaker 7: the deal.
- 6:39Speaker 1: They're getting quarterback play I didn't think they were going
- 6:41Speaker 1: to get. At least they did Saturday. From week to week,
- 6:43Speaker 1: you just never know. I thought Ole Miss was going
- 6:45Speaker 1: to win the national championship. Yeah, you're right.
- 6:47Speaker 7: LSU is going to be a fantastic team.
- 6:49Speaker 6: You're right.
- 6:50Speaker 7: And then I thought Florida was going to be a
- 6:51Speaker 7: dominant team. You're right. They were not even close to
- 6:54Speaker 7: being in that game.
- 6:55Speaker 9: Nope.
- 6:55Speaker 7: And just from week to week, you just never know.
- 6:57Speaker 1: You do not know.
- 6:58Speaker 7: Except for Georgia.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Except for Georgia. We'll see this week. Yeah, we'll see.
- 7:02Speaker 7: Alabama's a lot better than I thought.
- 7:03Speaker 1: They're good.
- 7:03Speaker 3: If you do some research about Missouri, what I like,
- 7:06Speaker 3: listen to some of the postgame, whatever. Drinkwits have lost
- 7:10Speaker 3: to nine straight ranked teams.
- 7:12Speaker 5: Yes, he has.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Guess what?
- 7:13Speaker 3: If a coach loses to nine straight ranked teams... He's
- 7:16Speaker 3: getting roasted on social media. Everybody says, can you win.
- 7:18Speaker 7: The big one? He doesn't listen to social media.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I know.
- 7:20Speaker 7: None of them do. They don't.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Then what I have to laugh is, after the game,
- 7:26Speaker 3: Drinkowitz is saying, like, hey, it's no big deal, you know.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Let's talk about the game. I'm getting tired of this.
- 7:31Speaker 3: And at one point he said, can we talk about
- 7:33Speaker 3: the freaking game? I mean, you know, and so, you know.
- 7:37Speaker 7: Can we talk about how much Kansas is in the wrong?
- 7:40Speaker 7: I mean, can we talk about it?
- 7:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:42Speaker 3: So you can't tell me that he didn't have that
- 7:44Speaker 3: game circled, knowing, hey, we need to win this game.
- 7:46Speaker 3: And so he's got a big relief off. So do
- 7:49Speaker 3: they have a letdown?
- 7:50Speaker 7: That's what I'm thinking. He had a sense of joy.
- 7:53Speaker 10: Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:55Speaker 3: I get a sense of joy when I come here
- 7:57Speaker 3: at 5 o'clock on Mondays.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Me too. Me too.
- 8:00Speaker 7: I like that question, though. It was awesome.
- 8:02Speaker 1: It was awesome.
- 8:02Speaker 7: Why is it important to feel joy? I really like
- 8:06Speaker 7: that question.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Versus relief.
- 8:08Speaker 3: I love Delco's answer. Once again, you're talking about a
- 8:10Speaker 3: guy that graduated from Penn. And I like the fact,
- 8:15Speaker 3: I equate it to, you take Jimbo Fisher or someone
- 8:19Speaker 3: like that. Those guys are lifelong football coaches. And I
- 8:23Speaker 3: feel they're like, oh, they don't. If somebody says, oh,
- 8:26Speaker 3: don't worry about that, they do, but they brush it off.
- 8:29Speaker 3: With Elko, he's so smart, he wants to say, okay,
- 8:32Speaker 3: this guy goes in motion, this guy goes over here, da-da-da,
- 8:35Speaker 3: throws you the chalk and goes, okay, what do you do, Seth?
- 8:38Speaker 3: What do you do, person?
- 8:39Speaker 1: Yeah. Because he knows. You go like, wow, I don't know. Yeah.
- 8:43Speaker 7: Well, I mean, it was a good answer, but I
- 8:45Speaker 7: also was like. Okay, players just need to stop worrying
- 8:48Speaker 7: about what, I mean, the so-called experts think. It's such
- 8:53Speaker 7: a generational thing that, I mean, I know they always
- 8:56Speaker 7: read the newspapers, but now everybody, you know, you've got
- 9:00Speaker 7: so many experts. Yeah, it's like, and there's so many podcasts,
- 9:04Speaker 7: and there's so many different talking heads.
- 9:06Speaker 1: And apparently some of them aren't welcome at Kyle Field.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Apparently not. Well... You don't have to worry about me
- 9:14Speaker 1: and my podcast. I'm not going on the field. I
- 9:19Speaker 1: don't want to get arrested and tased.
- 9:21Speaker 7: No, absolutely not, man.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I'm not an influencer.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Apparently, they're pretty serious about that. Somebody got arrested and tased?
- 9:29Speaker 1: See, you need to pay attention to the social media.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Do I have to have a phone for that?
- 9:36Speaker 7: He's not an influencer. Exactly.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Oh, I would beg to differ. I would beg to differ.
- 9:43Speaker 1: And by the way, while I'm thinking about it, what
- 9:47Speaker 1: in the world? You're leading your own contest. Not anymore.
- 9:51Speaker 1: You're right at the top of my contest. I'm close
- 9:53Speaker 1: to you. What are you doing? It's experience, age. Is
- 9:57Speaker 1: that what it is?
- 9:59Speaker 8: Luck.
- 9:59Speaker 1: With luck. age comes experience?
- 10:01Speaker 11: Luck.
- 10:02Speaker 3: I don't laugh. You know, you guys are on it.
- 10:04Speaker 3: I'm going to write this. What I love about it,
- 10:06Speaker 3: we all pick what's known in the EGOR Prague panel.
- 10:09Speaker 3: This week, all five NFL games.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Come down to the last minute. I mean, you can
- 10:14Speaker 1: be 0-5 or 5-0.
- 10:15Speaker 7: I can't believe I picked against the Cowboys. I cannot
- 10:18Speaker 7: believe I did that.
- 10:19Speaker 12: I didn't.
- 10:19Speaker 1: And then Harvard. I picked against the Oilers. Harvard Colgate
- 10:23Speaker 1: decided on the last play. Kentucky, South Carolina. That's seven
- 10:27Speaker 1: games where just flip a coin.
- 10:29Speaker 9: I know.
- 10:30Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 10:30Speaker 3: That's why we love football, but yet someone gets mad
- 10:33Speaker 3: if you.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Don't win all seven of those.
- 10:34Speaker 7: I don't know why I'm always looking up for, you know,
- 10:36Speaker 7: the Harvard score. You know, like, geez, like, Cease does
- 10:39Speaker 7: this to me. My wife's going, why do you care
- 10:43Speaker 7: about Colgate and Harvard?
- 10:45Speaker 1: Okay, I've told this story before, but back when I
- 10:48Speaker 1: used to be good at picking games, and I was winning.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Back in 22. I was winning his contest. Yeah. I
- 10:58Speaker 1: am screaming at the television on Christmas Day for the
- 11:02Speaker 1: blue-gray game. I mean, my family thinks I've lost my
- 11:09Speaker 1: ever-loving mind. And you talk about flipping a coin. It's
- 11:12Speaker 1: an all-star game on Christmas afternoon, and I'm screaming at
- 11:16Speaker 1: the TV when the gray quarterback throws an interception.
- 11:22Speaker 7: We're watching TV on Friday night, and I go, crap.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Like, what?
- 11:26Speaker 7: I said, Franklin just lost.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Yes!
- 11:29Speaker 7: Yes! I'm like, why do you care that Franklin has
- 11:33Speaker 7: a goal?
- 11:33Speaker 1: Same thing. The exact same thing.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Okay, I got to tell you this story. This is
- 11:38Speaker 3: part Americana. I went to Cove on Friday night. Coming back,
- 11:42Speaker 3: they took me through camera. You know, I forgot about
- 11:45Speaker 3: the game. I come up over the hill going to camera. 1151.
- 11:49Speaker 3: I'll bet there's over 100 people at the Dairy Queen.
- 11:53Speaker 1: The Dairy Queen's open. There's got to be Friday night, man.
- 11:56Speaker 3: And I go like the Dairy Queen is open on
- 11:59Speaker 3: a Friday night, 1150.
- 12:00Speaker 1: God bless high school football. Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Where else do you have that?
- 12:05Speaker 1: There's there's two things that keep small towns going in
- 12:08Speaker 1: the state of Texas.
- 12:09Speaker 7: Dairy Queen and high school football.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Well, I would wrap Dairy Queen and high school football together.
- 12:15Speaker 1: The second the second, especially when you get west of
- 12:19Speaker 1: I-35 is deer hunting.
- 12:20Speaker 7: Yeah, okay. So I remember before we had these phones.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Lano and a lot of those towns wouldn't exist without
- 12:25Speaker 1: deer hunting.
- 12:26Speaker 7: Before we had these phones, you had to actually call
- 12:29Speaker 7: the school that you were going to.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Yes.
- 12:30Speaker 7: And I always told people that it wasn't really a
- 12:32Speaker 7: small town if they didn't give you directions based on
- 12:35Speaker 7: where the Dairy Queen is.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Exactly. Yeah. Go to the Dairy Queen and go two
- 12:39Speaker 1: blocks past. Two blocks there.
- 12:40Speaker 7: Take a right.
- 12:41Speaker 3: When I first got into business and just trying to
- 12:44Speaker 3: track down scores, and I credit this all to George Brazil.
- 12:47Speaker 3: He was a famous writer.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Awesome American statesman.
- 12:50Speaker 3: When he couldn't get a high school score, he called
- 12:52Speaker 3: the Dairy Queen.
- 12:53Speaker 7: Wow.
- 12:54Speaker 1: So I did that, too.
- 12:54Speaker 3: He called the Dairy Queen. I said, hey, is anybody there?
- 12:56Speaker 3: What a great idea. What's the Rio Vista score? They go,
- 12:59Speaker 3: what was the score tonight? Someone hold the score.
- 13:01Speaker 1: You know what?
- 13:02Speaker 7: At College Station High School, I don't know if it
- 13:03Speaker 7: still is, but the Whataburger was the place to go
- 13:07Speaker 7: after all games.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:08Speaker 7: So when my kids were either playing or cheering, that
- 13:12Speaker 7: was the destination.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:13Speaker 7: Whataburger.
- 13:13Speaker 1: It still is. I'd say I was up two years ago. Interesting.
- 13:16Speaker 3: Because I came back from a game late and I
- 13:18Speaker 3: wanted to stop in there and get something.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Forget it. The crowd was so money, and they were all,
- 13:22Speaker 1: I go, forget it. I just go to the house.
- 13:23Speaker 7: Too crowded. Nobody goes there anymore.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Exactly. Way to go, Yogi. Boy, did we get sidetracked.
- 13:28Speaker 7: Wow.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Friday night, you mentioned Franklin. Yeah. I'm watching Northwestern and
- 13:34Speaker 1: Penn State Friday night.
- 13:36Speaker 7: What a beautiful stadium.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh, what a stadium.
- 13:38Speaker 7: That is awesome.
- 13:39Speaker 1: That was, see, she got to see this stadium.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Well, I watched a little bit of the game the
- 13:44Speaker 3: following previous week. That's why I picked it when I
- 13:46Speaker 3: saw them play against Indiana.
- 13:47Speaker 1: But they're breaking in their new stadium this last Friday night.
- 13:51Speaker 7: It's gorgeous.
- 13:51Speaker 12: $ 875 million.
- 13:51Speaker 1: $ 875 million. That's what we all make together. It has
- 14:00Speaker 1: every bell and whistle you'd ever want. The female sideline
- 14:07Speaker 1: reporter is taking us on tours during every break, showing
- 14:11Speaker 1: what you can do, showing the food, showing where people
- 14:14Speaker 1: sit on the field. It is phenomenal. It only holds 35,000.
- 14:19Speaker 1: It looks twice that big.
- 14:22Speaker 7: Yeah, because it has that awning, right? And the lighting
- 14:25Speaker 7: is incredible. It looks like a day game.
- 14:27Speaker 1: So every seat is within 136 feet of the field.
- 14:33Speaker 1: That's how intimate it is. And it is unbelievable. It's
- 14:37Speaker 1: going to be a bucket list. I'm telling you, I
- 14:40Speaker 1: would love to go after seeing this thing, right?
- 14:43Speaker 7: Yeah, me too.
- 14:43Speaker 1: I mean, it is just beautiful.
- 14:45Speaker 7: It looks a lot bigger than that.
- 14:47Speaker 1: It does.
- 14:47Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 14:48Speaker 13: And?
- 14:50Speaker 1: You could tell Northwestern was geeked up to open that stadium.
- 14:56Speaker 1: I had watched Northwestern against Indiana season week before. And
- 15:00Speaker 1: I went, you know, this quarterback's pretty good.
- 15:03Speaker 3: And Chip Kelly's a great quarterback whisperer.
- 15:05Speaker 1: And Chip Kelly is a quarterback whisperer and an offensive guy.
- 15:09Speaker 1: And Penn State still doesn't know what play he's going
- 15:13Speaker 1: to call.
- 15:13Speaker 8: Right.
- 15:14Speaker 1: They were brutal. And I give Chip Kelly a lot
- 15:18Speaker 1: of credit because I'm telling you, they're going to have
- 15:23Speaker 1: to be reckoned with this year because they just are.
- 15:27Speaker 3: They have a quarterback and they've got an OC.
- 15:29Speaker 7: Yeah, and they've got a stadium.
- 15:31Speaker 1: And a stadium that's just unreal.
- 15:34Speaker 7: Yeah, I was really blown away by that.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I was too. But this is, you know, for $ 875 million,
- 15:41Speaker 1: I guess they got their money's worth.
- 15:42Speaker 7: I don't know which was brighter, the stadium or RG3' s suit.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Yeah, the suit.
- 15:46Speaker 7: God, that suit was unbelievable.
- 15:48Speaker 1: It was unbelievable. I'm glad to see him back on
- 15:51Speaker 1: the air, by the way.
- 15:52Speaker 7: Yeah, and him eating a hot dog right there.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Eating a hot dog and trying to talk. Yeah. I
- 15:57Speaker 1: was thinking about RG3 when I was looking at him
- 16:00Speaker 1: and all these quarterbacks, and especially the ones that run.
- 16:04Speaker 1: There's a lot of quarterbacks in the NFL that are
- 16:06Speaker 1: hurt right now. And I'm not saying NFL quarterbacks hadn't
- 16:09Speaker 1: been hurt before. But there's a lot more running-style quarterbacks
- 16:13Speaker 1: coming out of college now. And the NFL has changed
- 16:17Speaker 1: how they attack people now. And while not a big
- 16:21Speaker 1: part of the game, they're going to run the football.
- 16:26Speaker 1: It's just such a shame what happened to him and
- 16:28Speaker 1: what the coach did to him.
- 16:30Speaker 7: He's a really good announcer. I like him.
- 16:33Speaker 1: He's bright. He's funny. He doesn't take himself too seriously.
- 16:37Speaker 1: But I remember when they came to Kyle Field, he
- 16:39Speaker 1: didn't have a lot of help there. And they had
- 16:41Speaker 1: just crushed him. But that was the year he still
- 16:43Speaker 1: won the Heisman, right? I remember that. And I had
- 16:46Speaker 1: seen him the year before in Waco against Texas. And
- 16:50Speaker 1: maybe it was that same season. I don't remember because
- 16:53Speaker 1: he made that famous statement. I'm not sure, but I
- 16:56Speaker 1: think Baylor University may have just won a Heisman trophy today.
- 17:00Speaker 1: And I'll never forget that. And he was right because
- 17:03Speaker 1: he put on a clinic. And he was just an
- 17:06Speaker 1: unbelievable athlete. That should have been great in the NFL.
- 17:10Speaker 7: He beat OU single-handedly.
- 17:11Speaker 1: He did.
- 17:12Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 17:13Speaker 1: On a Friday night, I think.
- 17:15Speaker 7: On a Friday night. I was in New York City,
- 17:18Speaker 7: and I just remember, like, they were on the— In
- 17:21Speaker 7: Times Square, they had this stuff going around Times Square.
- 17:25Speaker 7: RG3 leads Baylor past Oklahoma. I was like, take photos.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Well, if you'll recall, and that was the year. Baylor
- 17:33Speaker 1: helped him. The next morning, they were doing game day
- 17:38Speaker 1: at Jerry World. And I don't remember what game was
- 17:40Speaker 1: being played. But he had just beaten OU that Friday night,
- 17:45Speaker 1: and he showed up on the set of game day
- 17:47Speaker 1: Saturday morning. At Jerry World.
- 17:51Speaker 7: Very nice. It was brilliant.
- 17:53Speaker 1: I don't know how I got off on that. It
- 17:55Speaker 1: doesn't matter, but it was fun to talk about.
- 17:57Speaker 7: I think he's a good announcer. I like him.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Okay, let's get back to this stuff. Can A &
- 18:05Speaker 1: M play like how they played Saturday against the better
- 18:12Speaker 1: teams that are coming up on their schedule starting Saturday?
- 18:17Speaker 3: I think so much depends on Reed and that offensive line.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Because you've got to, unless you're Oklahoma, you've got to
- 18:24Speaker 3: score some points. And it gets back to that offensive line,
- 18:28Speaker 3: and can Reed feel comfortable? Because I just think, even
- 18:32Speaker 3: in that game Saturday, There were holes in A &
- 18:36Speaker 3: M' s secondary. If that quarterback could throw the ball, I
- 18:39Speaker 3: think they'd have had at least 21 points. I thought
- 18:42Speaker 3: A & M still wasn't able to get enough pressure
- 18:45Speaker 3: on that quarterback who was really bad that day. So
- 18:48Speaker 3: I think A & M' s going to have to go
- 18:49Speaker 3: into any game mentally thinking they've got to score at
- 18:53Speaker 3: least 21 points to win. And right now as it
- 18:55Speaker 3: gets back to what can that offensive line do, what
- 18:58Speaker 3: can Reed do? And it was a very conservative approach.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Was.
- 19:03Speaker 3: But I liked it because they needed confidence. And Elko
- 19:07Speaker 3: knows that, being around that team.
- 19:08Speaker 15: It was clean.
- 19:10Speaker 1: We hadn't seen that. No turnovers.
- 19:12Speaker 3: The penalties they had weren't that big a deal.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Yep.
- 19:15Speaker 3: But they played smart football. They got the big interception early.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Was that a bad pass? Of course it was. But
- 19:21Speaker 3: they took advantage of it. A & M and... Actually,
- 19:24Speaker 3: they showed if A & M just gets close, they're
- 19:27Speaker 3: going to get three points. They've got the best.
- 19:29Speaker 7: Field goal kicker in the country.
- 19:30Speaker 3: I was about to bring that up.
- 19:31Speaker 7: No, I was just going to say that Austin Simmons
- 19:35Speaker 7: is a lot better than K.J.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Jackson. No doubt.
- 19:38Speaker 7: And so if they're going to have those holes, he's
- 19:41Speaker 7: going to pick them apart.
- 19:41Speaker 1: And Missouri has a running back. I don't think Arkansas did.
- 19:44Speaker 7: No, I don't think so either.
- 19:45Speaker 1: No, Arkansas had multiple.
- 19:47Speaker 7: I think A & M, to answer your question, I
- 19:49Speaker 7: think A & M, can do this against the Citadel.
- 19:52Speaker 7: But I don't think they can do it against Missouri
- 19:54Speaker 7: because of the talent.
- 19:54Speaker 1: They have to be better.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Yes.
- 19:56Speaker 3: And Missouri has to be down a little bit. Not
- 19:58Speaker 3: up like they were for Florida and say, okay. But
- 20:01Speaker 3: they're going to have a sellout. And Drinkowitz wants to
- 20:05Speaker 3: beat A & M. He hasn't been able to beat
- 20:07Speaker 3: A & M. They showed up. Remember he brought the
- 20:09Speaker 3: big team in here a few years ago. They were horrible.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Even like they tried to bait their saying that A
- 20:16Speaker 3: & M took the wide receiver's shirt, whatever it was.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 20:21Speaker 7: I remember that.
- 20:22Speaker 3: And A & M just kicked the dog out of it.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Missouri was terrible that day. They were terrible that day.
- 20:27Speaker 7: I got to give Missouri some credit, too, because I
- 20:30Speaker 7: was watching that game, and that stadium is so much
- 20:33Speaker 7: better than it used to be.
- 20:34Speaker 4: It is.
- 20:34Speaker 7: Remember when they had the end zone with the rocks?
- 20:36Speaker 13: Oh, yeah.
- 20:36Speaker 1: They've done a tremendous amount of work on it.
- 20:39Speaker 7: It looks really good.
- 20:40Speaker 1: It looks like a real stadium now.
- 20:41Speaker 7: It does. It used to not have any atmosphere at all.
- 20:44Speaker 7: I remember we were there the day they tore that
- 20:46Speaker 7: press box down.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Yes, they were.
- 20:47Speaker 7: We all signed the final. But, man, I just thought
- 20:51Speaker 7: that was one of the rinky-dinkiest most stadiums that I've seen.
- 20:55Speaker 1: It's like going to a high school game.
- 20:56Speaker 7: Yeah, and now it looks really good.
- 20:57Speaker 1: It's like going to Independence Bowl.
- 20:59Speaker 7: Yeah, exactly.
- 21:00Speaker 1: You know, I was thinking about this today when Elko
- 21:02Speaker 1: was talking. Missouri has been, since they came into this league,
- 21:07Speaker 1: I think we all agree they belong in the Big
- 21:10Speaker 1: Ten and not in the SEC. but the Big Ten
- 21:13Speaker 1: wouldn't take them. They're a Big Ten team. But because
- 21:16Speaker 1: of that, they're just far enough on the outskirts, and
- 21:21Speaker 1: it's Missouri, and they have gotten no respect. They didn't
- 21:24Speaker 1: get a lot in the Big 12, but they kept
- 21:26Speaker 1: beating people. And they have been pretty dang successful in
- 21:31Speaker 1: the SEC, much more so than I thought and most
- 21:35Speaker 1: people thought.
- 21:36Speaker 7: Much more so than A & M. I mean, they've
- 21:38Speaker 7: been a two-commerce championship game.
- 21:39Speaker 3: They won the division the first two years they were
- 21:41Speaker 3: in it.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Pinkle was a great coach.
- 21:43Speaker 7: Yes, he was.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Gary Pinkle was a terrific coach. I think Drinkwich is
- 21:48Speaker 1: pretty good. We'll see. He hasn't been great. They've been
- 21:52Speaker 1: just good enough, but not good enough to beat the
- 21:54Speaker 1: better teams.
- 21:55Speaker 3: I think Drinkwich's got a chance. You go back to
- 21:58Speaker 3: when it was 22, whatever, they ended up being disappointed
- 22:01Speaker 3: in the Ohio State team in the Cotton Bowl. But
- 22:04Speaker 3: he was 6-3 in ranked teams before he went in
- 22:06Speaker 3: that skid of 0-9. So he was hearing it from
- 22:09Speaker 3: the fans. Like you said, they're out in the middle
- 22:11Speaker 3: or an outpost in the SEC right So they were
- 22:13Speaker 3: an afterthought for like the last.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Four or five years. Well, let me tell you who
- 22:16Speaker 1: they have left besides A & M.
- 22:18Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Look at this schedule. I saw it.
- 22:20Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 22:21Speaker 1: They go to Ole Miss.
- 22:23Speaker 7: Okay.
- 22:24Speaker 1: They play at Arkansas. They host Texas. They're at Georgia.
- 22:32Speaker 1: And they have Kentucky at home. I mean, it's a
- 22:34Speaker 1: brutal schedule. But. I'm looking at all these schedules now
- 22:38Speaker 1: with all these teams that maybe some of us didn't
- 22:40Speaker 1: think were going to be quite as good. I mean,
- 22:43Speaker 1: tell me who has an easy schedule. Texas. Texas schedule
- 22:47Speaker 1: is brutal. I'm just joking. I mean, it's horrible. It is.
- 22:50Speaker 1: They've got to buy this week. They've got Oklahoma. Yeah.
- 22:53Speaker 1: I don't buy that, by the way. I know. It's
- 22:55Speaker 1: a rivalry game. I do not buy that. I'm with you.
- 22:58Speaker 1: And the history of this game and most rivalry games is,
- 23:02Speaker 1: It's for the underdog.
- 23:03Speaker 7: You know, I'll tell you who does have an easy schedule.
- 23:06Speaker 7: Not in the SEC, but Texas Tech. Georgia.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Texas Tech. Texas Tech caught a break, right?
- 23:11Speaker 7: They really did. And they're not nearly as good.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Oh, they're not. No.
- 23:14Speaker 3: You're right about Georgia. I don't think they have a
- 23:17Speaker 3: tough schedule. I don't want it in front of me.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Well, besides going to Tuscaloosa this week. They got Missouri
- 23:25Speaker 1: at home, like you said. Let's see. Georgia is at Alabama. Alabama.
- 23:30Speaker 1: They're home to Auburn. They have an open date. They
- 23:33Speaker 1: have the annual Florida game, which this year is in
- 23:36Speaker 1: Atlanta because they're redoing the stadium in Jacksonville. I don't
- 23:40Speaker 1: know how that's going to affect things. That'd be interesting.
- 23:43Speaker 1: It's going to be so different, right? So different after
- 23:47Speaker 1: playing in Jacksonville for I don't know how many years, right?
- 23:51Speaker 1: They have to go to Ole Miss, does Georgia. Okay,
- 23:55Speaker 1: I stand corrected. That's a tough schedule. They host Missouri.
- 23:59Speaker 1: I stand corrected. It's not, you know, with the Florida,
- 24:05Speaker 1: Ole Miss, and Missouri games now. Yeah, and Kentucky's better.
- 24:11Speaker 1: They don't play Kentucky. I'm sorry, I'm switching around. But
- 24:14Speaker 1: they don't have to play Kentucky. A little tougher than
- 24:15Speaker 1: I thought. But we'll know it's a point-and-a-half game right
- 24:18Speaker 1: now after watching this Alabama and Keelan Russell play this
- 24:22Speaker 1: last week and just destroy Mississippi State.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Mississippi State's got a great quarterback.
- 24:29Speaker 1: You're right. They may be a 7-5 team. They might be.
- 24:33Speaker 1: They do have a great quarterback. But, man, Keelan Russell,
- 24:37Speaker 1: suddenly he's jumped up. Several notches.
- 24:40Speaker 3: But you also knew. But Taylor is hurt, isn't he?
- 24:43Speaker 7: Who? Kamario Taylor got hurt. He is.
- 24:45Speaker 1: He was limping. He wasn't full strength on Saturday.
- 24:49Speaker 7: I mean, he's still a big, huge presence. Yes, he is.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Not only was he hurt, but their running back was hurt.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Bothwell was out. Fluff. He didn't play at all. So
- 25:01Speaker 1: that's a killer for them. That's like Juan Lacy being
- 25:04Speaker 1: done at Ole Miss.
- 25:05Speaker 3: But like what you said is every week is almost
- 25:08Speaker 3: a Super Bowl.
- 25:09Speaker 12: It is.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Let's be honest.
- 25:10Speaker 3: If A & M wins this weekend, they feel a
- 25:12Speaker 3: lot better about themselves.
- 25:13Speaker 1: No doubt.
- 25:14Speaker 3: But if they lose, then they're right back because what
- 25:17Speaker 3: have you done for me?
- 25:17Speaker 1: It's week to week, man. It is week to week.
- 25:20Speaker 1: And then you've lost three games. Yep.
- 25:22Speaker 3: And then you're looking at five. You're going to lose five.
- 25:25Speaker 1: You're going to lose six. Got to go to Alabama.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Got to go to Alabama. Yep. Every week.
- 25:29Speaker 3: You can't look past. I don't care who you are.
- 25:31Speaker 3: Because suddenly if Missouri loses this week, they're looking at
- 25:34Speaker 3: being a 4-5 loss team.
- 25:36Speaker 7: Absolutely.
- 25:37Speaker 3: If they lose to A & M, how are they
- 25:38Speaker 3: going to beat Georgia and Texas?
- 25:40Speaker 7: I think you can look past Arkansas.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Who? Yeah, you can look past Arkansas. They're terrible.
- 25:46Speaker 7: I don't think Arkansas is going to give Tennessee much
- 25:48Speaker 7: of a game either. I mean, Tennessee is okay.
- 25:51Speaker 1: They're okay.
- 25:52Speaker 7: But I was so unimpressed with Arkansas.
- 25:55Speaker 3: The talent level. When you look at Tennessee's talent level,
- 25:59Speaker 3: They'd have to screw it up. You've got to screw
- 26:00Speaker 3: it up against Arkansas.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Well, you know, Hypo still has a couple of games
- 26:07Speaker 1: that you're going to look at and shake your head. Yeah,
- 26:09Speaker 1: you're exactly right.
- 26:10Speaker 7: I agree. In my mind. Maybe not.
- 26:13Speaker 3: I think he gets some good teams. Tennessee's going to
- 26:16Speaker 3: lose by a couple of touchdowns. I don't think they're
- 26:18Speaker 3: that good. I haven't seen enough of them.
- 26:20Speaker 9: Right.
- 26:21Speaker 3: But just know that they have a quarterback problem, a
- 26:23Speaker 3: young quarterback.
- 26:23Speaker 1: They have a young quarterback. That's not a good position.
- 26:25Speaker 1: Who's also hurt right now, by the way. He's banged up.
- 26:28Speaker 3: Now– Tennessee, to me, in the last few years has
- 26:31Speaker 3: benefited from a weak schedule. There's no doubt in my mind.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Well, this year they host. They always play Alabama. They
- 26:37Speaker 1: always play Alabama. They get them at home this year.
- 26:39Speaker 1: They get Kentucky at home. They come here on November
- 26:43Speaker 1: the 14th. They are hosting LSU on November 21st. So
- 26:48Speaker 1: they've got a few games left.
- 26:50Speaker 3: But they have home.
- 26:52Speaker 1: They get big games at home. They get Kentucky at home.
- 26:54Speaker 1: They get LSU at home. They get Alabama at home.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Say what you will.
- 26:57Speaker 3: It's a hard place to play. If he'd called a
- 27:00Speaker 3: good game last year or two years ago, they'd have won.
- 27:03Speaker 1: No doubt about that. He made some stupid calls. Very stupid.
- 27:07Speaker 1: He lost the game.
- 27:09Speaker 7: Yeah, another stupid coach, I think, is Beamer. He just
- 27:11Speaker 7: does some things.
- 27:13Speaker 1: He likes to come from ahead.
- 27:15Speaker 7: They were 17 points ahead. They were up 17-0. They
- 27:19Speaker 7: lost the game at home.
- 27:21Speaker 3: He says it's one of the best venues in the country.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Well, it is.
- 27:24Speaker 3: It is, and you can't do that.
- 27:26Speaker 1: You've got to back it up. All right, we're going

- 31:38Speaker 1: Mama told.
- 31:42Speaker 7: Me when I was young.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Hey, welcome back. Glad to have you with us. It
- 31:47Speaker 1: is a Monday Writer's Roundtable thing with Rusty Burson and
- 31:52Speaker 1: Robert Cessna. It's brought to you by Intech and First
- 31:55Speaker 1: Financial Bank every Monday. We thank you for being with us.
- 32:00Speaker 1: I had a listener Sunday tell me he enjoys the show,
- 32:04Speaker 1: so we got one. Hey, keep going. Yeah, so we're
- 32:07Speaker 1: trying to build.
- 32:08Speaker 7: I had a guy at our Kairos meeting told me
- 32:11Speaker 7: that he has a... Sunday school class that starts at
- 32:16Speaker 7: 6 o'clock on Monday, and he stays in the car
- 32:20Speaker 7: so that he can listen to this entire show.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Bless you, sir. Hallelujah. God bless you, sir. We need
- 32:26Speaker 1: all the help we can get.
- 32:28Speaker 7: Absolutely.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Especially from way above. Especially. So where is this team
- 32:36Speaker 1: right now, Cease? You have game six. We'll be at
- 32:42Speaker 1: the halfway point. on Saturday at Missouri? They got a
- 32:48Speaker 1: lot of confidence. Let's be honest. Man, he's got two
- 32:52Speaker 1: new offensive coordinators. Which they were lacking going into Saturday. Which,
- 32:56Speaker 1: you know, they needed something positive to happen. No question.
- 32:59Speaker 3: If you were Holman Wiggins, you can say like, well,
- 33:03Speaker 3: the line's not blocking, the defense is not playing, all
- 33:06Speaker 3: that's true, but He's still getting some of the blame.
- 33:08Speaker 3: And he knows and he feels it because he was
- 33:12Speaker 3: bumped up. Same thing with Hemphill. Those guys all needed
- 33:16Speaker 3: some confidence. And let's be honest, you look at all
- 33:19Speaker 3: these teams. The players needed it too. You've got 30,
- 33:21Speaker 3: 40 new guys coming in just transfers alone. A &
- 33:24Speaker 3: M doesn't have that many. But they still, even with
- 33:26Speaker 3: the freshmen, they probably have 30, 40 new guys. They
- 33:29Speaker 3: weren't here last year to do part of the college
- 33:31Speaker 3: football playoff.
- 33:32Speaker 7: You know who they remind me of? They remind me
- 33:35Speaker 7: of the Texas Rangers. They're about 500. They're a mediocre team. Yeah,
- 33:40Speaker 7: they're about 500.
- 33:41Speaker 1: With a couple of good parts.
- 33:43Speaker 7: Yeah, with a couple of good parts. And, you know,
- 33:45Speaker 7: I mean, like the Rangers, you're like, they're not terrible.
- 33:49Speaker 7: But they're not great. They're just mediocre. And they finished
- 33:53Speaker 7: right at. 500. And this team, I think after this week,
- 33:55Speaker 7: is going to be.
- 33:56Speaker 8: 500.
- 33:56Speaker 3: Well, you're right in the fact that they're an average
- 33:59Speaker 3: team that hasn't proven anything. Even like right now, their
- 34:01Speaker 3: best win is Arizona State. They just stuck at home
- 34:04Speaker 3: against Baylor.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Oh, by the way, Baylor destroyed them. Destroyed them.
- 34:07Speaker 7: What in the world? I was texting my dad. My
- 34:10Speaker 7: dad's like, what in the world? What got into Baylor?
- 34:13Speaker 1: I was like. Once again, Arizona.
- 34:18Speaker 3: State had a quarterback that couldn't make it at Kentucky
- 34:20Speaker 3: when Kentucky was bad. Their coach has done great. But
- 34:24Speaker 3: my point being is A & M is average right now.
- 34:26Speaker 3: They're going to have great chances to prove there are
- 34:29Speaker 3: good teams starting this week.
- 34:30Speaker 1: They've got Missouri. They've got Oklahoma. They've got Alabama.
- 34:35Speaker 7: Tennessee.
- 34:36Speaker 1: South Carolina.
- 34:38Speaker 7: So my thing is they're going to be 3-3 after
- 34:40Speaker 7: this week. They'll probably be 4-3. They'll definitely be 4-3
- 34:43Speaker 7: after they play Citadel. Four and four after they play Alabama.
- 34:46Speaker 7: Five and four maybe after they play South Carolina. Five
- 34:50Speaker 7: and five, who knows, if they play Tennessee. I mean,
- 34:53Speaker 7: that's the kind of team I see.
- 34:55Speaker 3: And if they are four and four rusty after break
- 34:57Speaker 3: even with eight with only four to go, I think
- 35:01Speaker 3: it's going to be tough for that team to be excited.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 35:04Speaker 3: Because you've got so many new players. And thanks to
- 35:07Speaker 3: the– I'm waiting to see. I'd like to be wrong,
- 35:10Speaker 3: but how– If you're making, let's say you came here
- 35:13Speaker 3: for $ 200, 000 and the team's 4-4, are you really going
- 35:17Speaker 3: to go to workouts that hard and to weight workouts
- 35:20Speaker 3: and whatever knowing you're going to get that check anywhere?
- 35:22Speaker 3: What are you playing for to go to the Texas Bowl?
- 35:24Speaker 1: So what I would think.
- 35:27Speaker 7: It's tough.
- 35:28Speaker 1: I think it's tough. You would have a percentage of
- 35:30Speaker 1: guys like that, right? that may or may not check
- 35:34Speaker 1: out and may be here for that. You've got to
- 35:36Speaker 1: have a few, just human nature. No, I agree with you.
- 35:38Speaker 1: The bad apples. You'd hope the other guys are good.
- 35:40Speaker 7: Exactly. Well, they're still playing for the spot in the NFL, right?
- 35:43Speaker 1: Yes. That's true. And they're not only playing for a
- 35:47Speaker 1: spot in the NFL, the young guys are playing for
- 35:50Speaker 1: a spot either, A, to get more money next year
- 35:54Speaker 1: or to go somewhere else and get more money next year.
- 35:57Speaker 1: This is the NFL now, right? No doubt. This is
- 36:00Speaker 1: the NFL. So individually, they know guys are looking at them, okay?
- 36:12Speaker 1: And it may be other colleges. You want something to
- 36:15Speaker 1: pop on tape for that sake? You may not have
- 36:19Speaker 1: any loyalty to Texas A & M University. And there
- 36:23Speaker 1: are guys all over the country that are playing at places.
- 36:27Speaker 1: They didn't grow up watching that. In fact, it was
- 36:30Speaker 1: so interesting to me. With K.J., when I was playing him,
- 36:35Speaker 1: he was in Carthage. He said, they go, you know,
- 36:39Speaker 1: what about Texas A & M? He goes, well, to
- 36:41Speaker 1: be real honest with you, I never watched Texas A
- 36:42Speaker 1: & M. Did you watch A.J.? No. No, I didn't
- 36:44Speaker 1: watch A.J. It was so honest. After I knew I
- 36:47Speaker 1: was coming, I did. Yes, that was an honest answer.
- 36:50Speaker 1: It was awesome. And people are going, who? And there
- 36:54Speaker 1: are still a handful of kids that grow up, want
- 36:57Speaker 1: to be Aggies, want to be Longhorns, want to be.
- 37:00Speaker 1: There's a handful. They watched TV. But that handful ain't
- 37:03Speaker 1: nearly as large as it used to be.
- 37:05Speaker 7: So my daughter did like a tour prior to the
- 37:08Speaker 7: start of the school semester with a bunch of athletes,
- 37:11Speaker 7: and they're from all over the country. And they were
- 37:14Speaker 7: just so uninterested in the A & M traditions, and
- 37:16Speaker 7: she was like, I was really kind of like ticked
- 37:18Speaker 7: off that, you.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Know, I grew up to be an Aggie.
- 37:22Speaker 7: I'm so happy to be here, and they could care less.
- 37:26Speaker 7: I'm like, well, that's the era we're in now.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Well, and also, as we've seen this before, You worry
- 37:32Speaker 3: about the guys in their last year that are going
- 37:35Speaker 3: to be NFL eligible. They don't want to play hurt
- 37:39Speaker 3: because that lowers their stock. They don't want to get hurt,
- 37:42Speaker 3: and you've got to be careful about that. There's so
- 37:44Speaker 3: many factors anymore. It's just not like it used to be.
- 37:46Speaker 3: You used to have two and eight teams where people
- 37:49Speaker 3: would go out and break their leg because they wanted
- 37:50Speaker 3: to win the next game against Texas.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Or they were so scared of the coach that they
- 37:55Speaker 1: weren't going to loaf. That's true. They'd be running on
- 37:59Speaker 1: Monday morning.
- 37:59Speaker 7: Well, I'm sure Marcel is listening to the show right now.
- 38:02Speaker 7: He's probably really upset that I think they're like the
- 38:04Speaker 7: Texas Rangers.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Right.
- 38:05Speaker 7: You know, I mean, that's the reality. I just think
- 38:08Speaker 7: it's just a kind of mediocre team. And this league
- 38:11Speaker 7: is so strong. I mean, every week somebody's going to
- 38:15Speaker 7: pop up. I didn't think Missouri was going to be
- 38:18Speaker 7: this good.
- 38:19Speaker 1: I'm with you.
- 38:19Speaker 3: Oh, without a doubt. When I looked at it, I go.
- 38:22Speaker 1: Maybe they're not. Maybe they're not. Maybe they've had their game. Maybe.
- 38:26Speaker 3: At the beginning of the year, I said, hey, A
- 38:28Speaker 3: & M always wins against Missouri lately. I mean, just
- 38:31Speaker 3: mark that up as a win. I go, I'm worried
- 38:33Speaker 3: about what happens in Alabama.
- 38:36Speaker 7: You know, I'm worried about South Carolina. How quickly that's changed.
- 38:39Speaker 7: Week to week.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Yeah. It's week to week.
- 38:41Speaker 7: I think Ole Miss is going to play for the
- 38:42Speaker 7: last championship.
- 38:44Speaker 6: No.
- 38:44Speaker 17: No.
- 38:44Speaker 1: They can't stop anybody.
- 38:45Speaker 7: They can't stop.
- 38:46Speaker 1: Florida.
- 38:47Speaker 7: Who can stop Florida?
- 38:48Speaker 1: Missouri.
- 38:50Speaker 3: I will say history has shown Elko runs a tight ship.
- 38:54Speaker 3: They've had no problems off the field these last couple years.
- 38:58Speaker 7: They're focused.
- 38:58Speaker 1: They have not. It took him a while to rein
- 39:01Speaker 1: that attitude and to change that attitude, and he's done
- 39:04Speaker 1: that without question.
- 39:06Speaker 3: And the stories I've all heard from people I trust,
- 39:08Speaker 3: that's the way he is. He's going to be up front.
- 39:12Speaker 3: He's going to be up front. He's going to do
- 39:13Speaker 3: it his way, and in the long run, that does
- 39:15Speaker 3: win him.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Oh, there's no doubt. I'm not on Elko's case, okay?
- 39:20Speaker 1: I think Elko's a really good football coach. It remains
- 39:24Speaker 1: to be seen if he made two mistakes by promoting
- 39:29Speaker 1: coordinators from within his staff. And I will say again,
- 39:36Speaker 1: I'm not ready to say that yet because the offensive
- 39:39Speaker 1: line hasn't been very good. The quarterback hasn't been very good.
- 39:43Speaker 1: And I don't care who the best offensive coordinator in
- 39:47Speaker 1: the world is. If you ain't getting quarterback play and
- 39:49Speaker 1: offensive line play, you're not going to be a very
- 39:51Speaker 1: good coach.
- 39:52Speaker 7: I will say this, that Marcel did a really good
- 39:54Speaker 7: job not throwing the really dangerous balls.
- 39:57Speaker 1: He did. He took care of the football.
- 39:59Speaker 7: He did.
- 39:59Speaker 1: And you have to do that.
- 40:02Speaker 7: In the air, I thought his running was really good.
- 40:05Speaker 1: Yes.
- 40:05Speaker 7: And I thought he was wise. It was appropriate. Yeah,
- 40:08Speaker 7: I thought he was wise with how he threw the ball. Absolutely.
- 40:11Speaker 3: I thought, I'll never say it, but I thought in
- 40:14Speaker 3: the past, these few games, I thought he was going
- 40:17Speaker 3: too far down.
- 40:18Speaker 1: In his progressions.
- 40:19Speaker 3: I think he was looking for one receiver, two receiver,
- 40:22Speaker 3: three receiver. I think they told him, you look for
- 40:24Speaker 3: one receiver, two receiver, go. I think they made it
- 40:27Speaker 3: easier for him to decide.
- 40:29Speaker 1: I will say this. I think the offensive line's protection, especially,
- 40:33Speaker 1: and again, you look at opponents, but it hasn't been terrible.
- 40:41Speaker 1: I think they've improved that. It's improved, I think. I'll
- 40:44Speaker 1: buy that. I think he was waiting too long. And
- 40:50Speaker 1: I watch a lot of football all day long. And
- 40:53Speaker 1: he ain't the only one that does this, right? He's
- 40:55Speaker 1: not the only quarterback. It's just a really hard position
- 40:59Speaker 1: to play. and a really hard position to play with
- 41:04Speaker 1: all these 6'5, 300-pound guys that can run as fast
- 41:08Speaker 1: as you can coming at you.
- 41:10Speaker 3: But when you flip it on any game and the
- 41:13Speaker 3: quarterback is hot, it's seemingly nothing the defense can do
- 41:18Speaker 3: because the receiver's going to get open, he turns, the ball's.
- 41:20Speaker 1: There, and we see that so many times. I saw
- 41:23Speaker 1: it Saturday with Missouri.
- 41:24Speaker 3: Look what Ole Miss, when they beat LSU.
- 41:26Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 41:27Speaker 3: I mean, you look at the game. game that trinidad
- 41:30Speaker 3: had i mean but we're seeing that more and more
- 41:33Speaker 3: and the question is how many times can we see
- 41:36Speaker 3: reed do that the rest of the year i don't
- 41:38Speaker 3: know and you're right rusty he could turn out is
- 41:41Speaker 3: he going to be like the rangers or is he
- 41:43Speaker 3: going to be like the dodgers well next next day games.
- 41:46Speaker 1: Will tell us yep all right we'll take a break
- 41:48Speaker 1: we'll come back the writers round table for a monday
- 41:51Speaker 1: presented by first financial bank and in tech we've got
- 41:54Speaker 1: the cowboys report and that's brought to you by schulte
- 41:57Speaker 1: roofing and the decker financial.
- 41:58Speaker 14: Group It was after a hailstorm a few years back.
- 42:01Speaker 14: I needed a new roof. Yeah, I shopped around, and
- 42:04Speaker 14: then I found Schulte Roofing, and boy, I'm glad I did.
- 42:07Speaker 14: The folks at Schulte guided me every step of the way.
- 42:10Speaker 14: They showed me my options. They told me what my
- 42:12Speaker 14: out-of-pocket cost would be after insurance. They took the complication
- 42:16Speaker 14: out of an otherwise very stressful situation. They took off
- 42:19Speaker 14: the damaged roof, put on the new roof, did all
- 42:21Speaker 14: the cleanup, and I had my new roof in one day.
- 42:23Speaker 11: Schulte!
- 42:26Speaker 8: For today's Dallas Cowboys report, we have an updated list
- 42:34Speaker 8: of injuries heading into Week 5's matchup against the Houston Texans.
- 42:38Speaker 11: Newly acquired corner Joey Porter Jr. has no injury designation
- 42:42Speaker 11: after dealing with a back issue at his previous stop
- 42:44Speaker 11: in Pittsburgh. Some good news on the defensive front as
- 42:47Speaker 11: well from Malik Hooker and Siobhan Revell who are both
- 42:49Speaker 11: full participant in today's practice after being limited Wednesday and Thursday.
- 42:53Speaker 11: But both DeMarvion Overshawn and Kobe Durant were officially ruled
- 42:57Speaker 11: out for the contest after being DMPs all week. As
- 43:00Speaker 11: for Houston, their list is full, but only Aziz Alshair
- 43:03Speaker 11: and MJ Stewart have been ruled out, with four players
- 43:05Speaker 11: carrying a questionable tag. Of those four is former Dallas
- 43:08Speaker 11: Cowboy Jadavion Clowney. Clowney was with the team last year
- 43:11Speaker 11: and was a DMP today but limited earlier this week.
- 43:14Speaker 11: In the game will be wide receiver Nico Collins, tied
- 43:17Speaker 11: in Dalton Schultz, safety Kalen Bullock, and tackle Trent Brown.
- 43:20Speaker 11: Kickoff at Reliant Stadium in Houston is set for noon
- 43:24Speaker 11: Sunday between the 1-2 Cowboys and the 0-3 Texans.

- 45:11Speaker 17: to the seasons of my youth I recall a box
- 45:17Speaker 17: of rags that someone gave.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Us Welcome back, it's the Writer's Roundtable. The old guys
- 45:22Speaker 1: are with you. It's Robert Cessna, Rusty Burson. We're glad
- 45:25Speaker 1: that you joined us on Monday.
- 45:27Speaker 7: Speaking of that, can I say something? I had this
- 45:29Speaker 7: little kid who asked me, Like I was talking to
- 45:32Speaker 7: him about how A & M always beats Arkansas, right?
- 45:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 45:35Speaker 7: And I said, I told him, I was like, listen,
- 45:37Speaker 7: the last time A & M lost to Arkansas at
- 45:41Speaker 7: Kyle Field was 1989. And he goes, are you alive
- 45:45Speaker 7: back in 1989? I was like, yeah, I was alive
- 45:48Speaker 7: in 1989. I was like, yeah.
- 45:49Speaker 3: Kids say the darndest things.
- 45:53Speaker 1: Art Linkletter. There you go, buddy. No one knows who
- 45:56Speaker 1: that is but you and me. I know.
- 45:59Speaker 7: Sorry to interrupt.
- 46:00Speaker 1: No, no, that's good.
- 46:01Speaker 7: When you said this old guy.
- 46:03Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, no. You hadn't even gotten there yet.
- 46:06Speaker 1: I was talking about, I don't know how this subject
- 46:11Speaker 1: came up, but I told, oh, one of my friends
- 46:15Speaker 1: was talking, and I told him about the, I said
- 46:18Speaker 1: I was at the Cotton Bowl the year Roger Staubach
- 46:22Speaker 1: won the Heisman Trophy. And he goes, I was at
- 46:25Speaker 1: that game. I go, no way. He goes, I was.
- 46:28Speaker 1: He said it was Texas against Navy. I said, yeah.
- 46:31Speaker 1: I said Navy was number one in the country that year.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Texas was undefeated. Navy had lost a game. I said,
- 46:39Speaker 1: do you know who Navy lost to? He said, no,
- 46:42Speaker 1: I don't know who Navy lost to. I said Navy
- 46:44Speaker 1: lost to SMU in the Cotton Bowl in September that year.
- 46:49Speaker 1: They had played on a Friday night game. In the
- 46:52Speaker 1: Cotton Bowl. For TV ESPN.
- 46:54Speaker 7: No.
- 46:55Speaker 1: That was long before ESPN. He goes, how old were you?
- 47:01Speaker 1: I said, I was 10 years old. I go, you know,
- 47:06Speaker 1: still remember it, but I was 10 years old. All right,
- 47:09Speaker 1: that's enough of that. I'm glad I remember 10 days ago.
- 47:13Speaker 1: I watched some bad football this weekend. There wasn't a
- 47:16Speaker 1: lot of great football on, I didn't think.
- 47:19Speaker 3: I know we touched on Baylor. That was a huge
- 47:21Speaker 3: win for Baylor and Aranda.
- 47:23Speaker 1: I was shocked.
- 47:23Speaker 3: I mean, you talk about in-state. When I turned it
- 47:26Speaker 3: on and I got home late and I saw that score,
- 47:28Speaker 3: I go, you've got to be kidding me. Yeah, I
- 47:30Speaker 3: couldn't believe it either.
- 47:31Speaker 1: I was flipping back and forth after the A &
- 47:36Speaker 1: M game.
- 47:37Speaker 3: You might have to hold on given... The Houston coach,
- 47:41Speaker 3: Coach of the Year award, you know.
- 47:42Speaker 1: Willie Fritz. Yeah, Willie Fritz. But he won. Found a
- 47:46Speaker 1: way to win. He found a way to win. They
- 47:48Speaker 1: weren't pretty. They weren't pretty there for a while, though.
- 47:51Speaker 7: I mean, I was flipping watching that Texas Tech-Colorado game. Oh,
- 47:55Speaker 7: that was ugly. You guys are ugly football.
- 47:56Speaker 1: That was some ugly football.
- 47:58Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, in Colorado, I mean, it was 29-7,
- 48:00Speaker 7: but Colorado gave Texas Tech, like, two touchdowns.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Oh, they did.
- 48:05Speaker 7: Yeah. I mean, the interception in the end zone. Yeah.
- 48:07Speaker 7: That was awful.
- 48:08Speaker 11: Horrible.
- 48:09Speaker 1: It was just horrible. I think the bloom is off
- 48:12Speaker 1: the rose for Dion, don't you?
- 48:14Speaker 7: Yeah, there's no doubt.
- 48:15Speaker 1: Okay, what about Pitt winning? Oh, my gosh. I'm so
- 48:19Speaker 1: upset at that. Vote for me and give me a break.
- 48:23Speaker 1: I'm so upset that that field goal was called no good.
- 48:27Speaker 1: I think it was no good, but good gosh. I
- 48:30Speaker 1: can't believe that Virginia Tech lost that game. That's another
- 48:34Speaker 1: one of my losses this week.
- 48:35Speaker 3: But that's the kind of way James Franklin does things.
- 48:38Speaker 7: I thought Iowa would put up a little more effort
- 48:40Speaker 7: against Ohio State.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Well, when it was early and it was 10-6 and
- 48:45Speaker 1: it was really kind of ugly and it was kind
- 48:48Speaker 1: of late in the second quarter and I'm going, this
- 48:50Speaker 1: is exactly the game they're hoping for, right?
- 48:53Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 48:54Speaker 1: Ohio State's got too much talent. You know, you look
- 48:57Speaker 1: at Iowa. We've got a Heisman winner. Iowa is a decent. Yes. Yeah. Yeah.
- 49:03Speaker 1: And I always go, why is he running open with
- 49:09Speaker 1: no one around him?
- 49:10Speaker 3: How is that possible? He's the best receiver in the country. Well,
- 49:14Speaker 3: I get that.
- 49:15Speaker 1: But tackle it why i mean yeah why why aren't
- 49:18Speaker 1: there three guys on him i don't get that i
- 49:21Speaker 1: don't get that you can't question coaching look kirk fair
- 49:27Speaker 1: has been around a long time he has a style
- 49:30Speaker 1: in which he plays is not the prettiest style in
- 49:32Speaker 1: the world but he wins with it But they didn't
- 49:35Speaker 1: have enough athletes to compete with Ohio State.
- 49:38Speaker 3: Well, they never do, but he's always going to win
- 49:39Speaker 3: one game he shouldn't every year.
- 49:42Speaker 1: Because he's going to play defense. He's a good coach.
- 49:44Speaker 8: Right.
- 49:45Speaker 1: Special teams are going to be good. And if it
- 49:47Speaker 1: comes down to fairly even teams or that team makes
- 49:51Speaker 1: a mistake, You know, yeah, but Ohio State was too
- 49:56Speaker 1: good Saturday.
- 49:56Speaker 7: Yeah, I was hoping Kaitlin Clark would be right, though. Oh, yeah, yeah,
- 50:01Speaker 7: she was on game day. Yeah, she was really good, too.
- 50:05Speaker 1: I saw Stanford Steve, a video he did from game day.
- 50:09Speaker 1: I got to tell you, the tradition that they have
- 50:12Speaker 1: created at Iowa for waving at those kids.
- 50:16Speaker 7: That's awesome.
- 50:16Speaker 1: I know. That just brings chills and tears every single time.
- 50:22Speaker 1: When the entire stadium, the referees, the other team.
- 50:26Speaker 7: It's maybe the coolest thing.
- 50:27Speaker 1: It is the coolest thing in college football.
- 50:30Speaker 7: I love it.
- 50:30Speaker 1: I'm sorry. It is the best thing.
- 50:32Speaker 7: In college football. No, you're exactly right. I love it.
- 50:34Speaker 1: I don't know who thought of that. I'd like to
- 50:37Speaker 1: give that person a huge raise, whatever, whoever it was
- 50:41Speaker 1: that thought of it. But that is phenomenal.
- 50:44Speaker 17: Yep.
- 50:45Speaker 7: That's a lot better than touching the rock at Clemson.
- 50:47Speaker 1: Anything. I mean, you name me, and there's great traditions.
- 50:51Speaker 1: That's why we love college football. But this one just
- 50:55Speaker 1: hits to the heart.
- 50:56Speaker 3: And anybody who's ever seen it once remembers it. You
- 51:00Speaker 3: remember it.
- 51:01Speaker 1: And the reason I brought it up is because Caitlin
- 51:03Speaker 1: Clark was up there in the suite with the kids
- 51:07Speaker 1: when that was going on. Awesome. And Stanford Steve was
- 51:11Speaker 1: talking about visiting those kids. either I think it was
- 51:14Speaker 1: before the game that Friday night or whatever, and he
- 51:19Speaker 1: mentioned about five of them by name. And he couldn't
- 51:22Speaker 1: get through the interview.
- 51:24Speaker 7: By the way, Caitlin may have been one of my
- 51:25Speaker 7: favorite guest pickers because of the banter she had with
- 51:29Speaker 7: Nick Saban. Nick Saban goes, no, I'm picking Alabama. And
- 51:32Speaker 7: she's like, have you ever picked against Alabama? She was
- 51:38Speaker 7: really good. I liked her.
- 51:40Speaker 13: So I do have the who came up with the
- 51:42Speaker 13: wave for Iowa.
- 51:43Speaker 1: Okay, awesome.
- 51:44Speaker 13: So it is this gal named Krista Young.
- 51:48Speaker 7: Okay.
- 51:49Speaker 13: She posted on Facebook back in 2017 that everyone in
- 51:54Speaker 13: the stadium should turn and wave to the children watching
- 51:57Speaker 13: from the newly built University of Iowa hospital.
- 52:00Speaker 1: Wow. So just a random person who went viral. That's amazing.
- 52:07Speaker 3: Well, I can say this, and probably you guys as well,
- 52:10Speaker 3: you've been to some ballgame. A lot of ballgames does
- 52:13Speaker 3: stuff with hospitals.
- 52:14Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 52:14Speaker 3: And I'm glad that they do because I've had a
- 52:17Speaker 3: chance to go watch A & M team go to.
- 52:19Speaker 1: Those a couple times.
- 52:20Speaker 9: Yes.
- 52:21Speaker 3: And when you see what it does for those kids,
- 52:23Speaker 3: they usually go to the kids.
- 52:24Speaker 1: No doubt.
- 52:25Speaker 3: You could think this is the best thing a.
- 52:28Speaker 1: Ball game does.
- 52:29Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:29Speaker 3: Because when you see it, you go like, those kids
- 52:32Speaker 3: are going to remember that.
- 52:32Speaker 1: And you forget the influence. The rest of their life.
- 52:36Speaker 1: That even college players have with these younger kids, right?
- 52:40Speaker 11: Oh, yeah.
- 52:40Speaker 7: I mean, Chip, you're talking about tearing up. Every time
- 52:43Speaker 7: I see one of those, I make a wish.
- 52:45Speaker 1: Oh, good gosh. I don't want to start on that.
- 52:46Speaker 11: No, no.
- 52:47Speaker 1: All right.
- 52:47Speaker 7: Let's go back to football.
- 52:50Speaker 1: So this weekend, normally– Texas-Oklahoma would be the premier game,
- 52:56Speaker 1: not only in college. I didn't look what's the spread
- 52:58Speaker 1: on that. Eight and a half. It went up to
- 53:02Speaker 1: eight and a half. But obviously, we talked a little
- 53:06Speaker 1: bit about Georgia-Alabama. I like Alabama for two reasons. I
- 53:13Speaker 1: like the quarterback a lot. And the fact is, no
- 53:18Speaker 1: one else owns Kirby Smart but Alabama. Kirby Smart has
- 53:24Speaker 1: had– That was Saban, mostly Saban. I get it. I
- 53:27Speaker 1: got you. I get it, but guess what? Kalen DeBoer
- 53:31Speaker 1: went to Georgia between the hedges and beat their butts
- 53:34Speaker 1: a year ago. He did. He did. I agree. And
- 53:36Speaker 1: they weren't as good a year ago.
- 53:37Speaker 3: And that's why you love the matchup because Kirby, he's
- 53:40Speaker 3: been there before, done it, and you're right. I always–
- 53:44Speaker 3: a lot of times I get down to, which we
- 53:46Speaker 3: always talk, quarterback, coach.
- 53:49Speaker 7: Yep.
- 53:51Speaker 1: Okay, trivia question. Who has the third highest winning percentage
- 53:56Speaker 1: of all time among major coaches against top 20 teams?
- 54:02Speaker 1: I guess Kirby Smart. Kalen DeBoer. Frank Leahy is like
- 54:07Speaker 1: number one on the list, and I forget who's number
- 54:10Speaker 1: two on the list. Kalen DeBoer is number three.
- 54:12Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 54:13Speaker 3: Because I say DeBoer hasn't coached that long.
- 54:14Speaker 1: Winning percentage. Winning percentage. So he's like 16-5. Okay. Against
- 54:19Speaker 1: top 25. Yeah, against ranked teams.
- 54:21Speaker 10: Yeah, 21.
- 54:22Speaker 1: That's a lot.
- 54:22Speaker 7: You said that you liked the quarterback, right?
- 54:25Speaker 1: I love him. I do, too. Russell, yeah.
- 54:26Speaker 7: Kalen Russell.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh. He's getting better every game. Every week.
- 54:30Speaker 1: He wasn't great, especially against Kentucky in the first half,
- 54:33Speaker 1: and they had to fight like crazy. Yeah. And that's when, well,
- 54:36Speaker 1: this is Kentucky. Well, Kentucky's turned out to be a
- 54:39Speaker 1: pretty decent football team. But you're right, Cease. He's gotten
- 54:43Speaker 1: better every game, especially at taking care of the football.
- 54:46Speaker 7: Well, and Gunnar Stockton's a good quarterback.
- 54:48Speaker 1: He is. He is a good quarterback.
- 54:50Speaker 3: Right now, I would take Russell as my quarterback in
- 54:53Speaker 3: a big game. And, you know, that's interesting because... You
- 54:56Speaker 3: know Stockton's not going to make the big mistake.
- 54:59Speaker 1: He generally does not.
- 55:00Speaker 3: Now, Russell might try to make a big play. You're
- 55:02Speaker 3: exactly right. Which could lead to a big mistake or
- 55:05Speaker 3: a big touchdown. So what do you want to pick?
- 55:07Speaker 1: I don't know. That's tough. That's what I'm saying. That's
- 55:08Speaker 1: why it's a point-and-a-half game. It's a toss-up game. And
- 55:13Speaker 1: I think it's going to be a really good game.
- 55:16Speaker 1: Between two teams that I don't think are going anywhere.
- 55:19Speaker 1: I don't think the loser of this game is... is
- 55:22Speaker 1: going anywhere personally. You know, you're right about that.
- 55:25Speaker 7: They're not going to make the playoffs.
- 55:26Speaker 1: No, no. I meant they're going to be around. That's
- 55:29Speaker 1: what I meant. That's a little bit like the Ole
- 55:31Speaker 1: Miss LSU game. They're not fading away, I guess is
- 55:33Speaker 1: the best way to put it.
- 55:34Speaker 3: But eventually. We're looking at these SEC matchups. A lot
- 55:38Speaker 3: of people are going to have two losses here pretty soon.
- 55:40Speaker 1: There's no question about that. Main good teams, not just
- 55:42Speaker 1: bad teams.
- 55:43Speaker 7: I see a lot of these other schools. I'm like, USC? Boy,
- 55:46Speaker 7: they barely got by.
- 55:47Speaker 1: Don't get me started on that. We got to go, unfortunately.
- 55:51Speaker 1: We're out of time. Don't get me started on the visor.
- 55:55Speaker 9: Oh, man.
- 55:55Speaker 1: Rusty Burson, Robert Cessna, the writer's roundtable for a Monday game. Hey,
- 56:01Speaker 1: I'm sorry that some of you aren't important enough to
- 56:04Speaker 1: have gone to David Gardner's big soiree on Thursday night.
- 56:09Speaker 1: But you can go in now and look at the
- 56:13Speaker 1: brand-new facility. It'll just blow you away at what they've

- 56:27Speaker 1: the DG Designs. along with the Rolex and Tudor watches.

- 56:35Speaker 1: there with David and Julia. I got to visit with
- 56:37Speaker 1: them a little bit. Don't forget, free two-day shipping, complimentary
- 56:42Speaker 1: gift wrapping. You can shop online at davidgardnersjewelers.com. It's just
- 56:49Speaker 1: not nearly as fun as walking into the store and
- 56:53Speaker 1: talking to one of their representatives. David Gardner's Jewelers, 9-1-1 University.
