- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17For Advent 2025 we are in a series called Brought to the
- 0:21Light, Advent for all who need it.
- 0:23This series is looking at the themes of Advent and how Jesus
- 0:26comes to us all. You can find more information
- 0:29about our church at fumccollingswood.org.
- 0:33Thanks for listening. This morning Scripture comes
- 0:41from the book of Hebrews chapter 10, starting in verse one.
- 0:46The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming, not
- 0:50the realities themselves. For this reason, it can never,
- 0:54by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make
- 0:59perfect those who draw near to worship.
- 1:03Otherwise would they not have stopped being offered.
- 1:06For the worshippers would have been cleansed once for all, and
- 1:10would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.
- 1:13But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins.
- 1:17It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away
- 1:21sins. Therefore, when Christ came into
- 1:24the world, He said, sacrifice and offering You did not desire
- 1:29but a body you prepared for me with burnt offerings and sin
- 1:33offerings. You were not pleased.
- 1:35Then I said, here I am. It is written about me in the
- 1:39scroll. I have come to do your will, my
- 1:42God. First he said, sacrifices and
- 1:47offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not
- 1:52desire, nor were you pleased with them, though they were
- 1:55offered in accordance with the law.
- 1:57Then he said, Here I am, I have come to do your will.
- 2:02He sets aside the first to establish the second, and by
- 2:06that will we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the
- 2:10body of Jesus Christ once for all.
- 2:13This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 2:17Thanks be to God, rarely, if ever, do we begin a relationship
- 2:27with someone knowing the fullness of who they are, right,
- 2:32no matter what kind of relationship it is right?
- 2:35Child and parent, Spouse to spouse, best friends, even
- 2:40siblings, right? Even even in a relationship that
- 2:45might begin with a dramatic confession or some kind of deep
- 2:50disclosure, that one revelation can never express the totality
- 2:57of someone's being right. The reality is it simply takes
- 3:02time for a relationship to develop and for us to get to
- 3:07know another person. Often our our journey through
- 3:13life involves a significant amount of time even learning who
- 3:16we really are ourselves, right? Not just who others have told us
- 3:22we are or maybe who we should be, right?
- 3:26And the same is true in our relationship with God.
- 3:30It takes time to get to know Him, and that's true for us as
- 3:35individuals, but also it's been true over the story of humanity
- 3:40as a collective right throughout the the story of redemption,
- 3:44which is recorded in the Bible. One of the ways that God has
- 3:49developed his relationship either with an individual or
- 3:52with a group of people was through inviting them into a
- 3:57special kind of relationship, a covenant relationship.
- 4:02You might be wondering, well, well, what is a covenant really?
- 4:07We're doing this covenant renewal thing.
- 4:09What, what is a covenant or what does a covenant between God and
- 4:13a person or a group of people? What does that look like?
- 4:17Well, it's most basic. A covenant is an agreement,
- 4:21right? It's a contract of sorts.
- 4:23There are terms implied. There are commitments made.
- 4:28Sometimes consequences are set out for not keeping your side of
- 4:33the covenant. When covenants are made between
- 4:352 equal people, like in a marriage covenant, right?
- 4:39The covenant spells out what each party is going to do toward
- 4:43the other, right? To have and to hold from this
- 4:46day forward, forsaking all others until we're parted by
- 4:51death, right? There's, there's a mutuality to
- 4:54that covenant and an exclusivity, right?
- 4:59One person to one person. When a covenant's made between
- 5:06one person and a group of people or between people of differing
- 5:12ranks or powers, there's still expectations that are set forth
- 5:16in a covenant for both sides even, but that relationship
- 5:22looks different, right? The the expectations look
- 5:24different on each side. The covenants that God makes
- 5:28throughout the Old Testament look very much like the the
- 5:31covenants that would have been made between a conquering king
- 5:34and the people or, or the king that just been conquered.
- 5:39Or the people would be expected to to submit, to pay tribute, to
- 5:44keep certain set of laws. And the king, the conquering
- 5:48king would be expected to protect that new people, that
- 5:52new part of their Kingdom, and to govern it, to rule it, all
- 5:57those things. But one of the ways that you can
- 6:00look at the story of the Bible is as a series of covenant
- 6:07between God and a person or God and a group of people, right?
- 6:14So towards the very beginning, God made a covenant with Adam to
- 6:19steward over the creation. Humanity would rule over the
- 6:25creation as God's representatives.
- 6:27That was their side. The one condition.
- 6:30Don't eat the fruit from the tree in the middle of the
- 6:34garden, right? God made a covenant then with
- 6:37Noah that he would never again destroy the earth by flood
- 6:41again. This is more of a one sided
- 6:43covenant. God was committing to the people
- 6:47even though he wasn't really asking for anything in return.
- 6:51But the covenant that God made with Abraham to bless Abraham
- 6:57and his family and, and through them, to bless the whole world,
- 7:01to give Abraham and his descendants when they were
- 7:05childless, to give Abraham and his descendants the land of
- 7:09Canaan, right? The promised land.
- 7:12This covenant required Abraham to walk in relationship with
- 7:17God, right? In an exclusive relationship
- 7:20with God. Abraham couldn't worship or
- 7:22trust in any other gods. It was only God alone.
- 7:29And then in the story of of Scripture we get to the big one,
- 7:32right? The covenant that God made with
- 7:33the people of Israel after he led them out of their bondage
- 7:37and oppression to Egypt. This covenant was reaffirmed
- 7:40right before the people entered into the promised land 40 some
- 7:44years later. God was covenanting to be their
- 7:49God and they were to be his people.
- 7:52And as God's people, there was a certain way of life that they
- 7:56were expected to practice, a certain way that they were going
- 8:01to live, as well as a whole system of of sacrifices that
- 8:05would keep that relationship between the people and God
- 8:10intact, right? That's what Hebrews was talking
- 8:12about, right? All those sacrifices that had to
- 8:14be offered. But through each of these
- 8:16successive covenants that we see throughout Scripture, we see not
- 8:20only God advancing his plan of redemption, his plan to bless
- 8:27the nations of the world, but we see a further revelation of
- 8:31God's nature and his character. We see more and more of who God
- 8:37is as he engages in these different covenants.
- 8:40Each step builds on those that preceded it, right?
- 8:45It doesn't give us necessarily a new understanding of God, but a
- 8:49deeper understanding of God. It's not a different God who's
- 8:53revealed in each one, but we're growing in our understanding of
- 8:57who this God is. And ultimately we get to the New
- 9:00Testament, right? And, and Jesus says that he, on
- 9:05that night in which he was betrayed, he gave himself up for
- 9:09us. He sat and ate that meal
- 9:10together with his disciples. On that night, he said he was
- 9:13instituting a new covenant and asked the church.
- 9:20Inspired by the Holy Spirit, we began to reflect on what that
- 9:24meant. We're told that this new
- 9:27covenant was meant to reveal even more fully who God is, that
- 9:32in Jesus we see the clearest picture of who God is and what
- 9:38God's desires and intentions are for humanity.
- 9:43Or what had been revealed in the covenant at Mount Sinai, which
- 9:47gave Israel the law that they were expected to follow, was
- 9:51never going to be able to do what people needed done right.
- 9:57It wasn't just the about the forgiveness of sins that were
- 10:02obtained through all those sacrifices, but it was actually
- 10:06what we needed was the defeat of sin and death, right?
- 10:10We we needed to be brought close to God again.
- 10:15But the blood of bulls and goats could never take away those sins
- 10:20could never span that gap, as it says in Hebrews 10 Ford.
- 10:24And so Jesus actually came once and for all as the sacrifice we
- 10:29needed because even our faithful observance of of those Old
- 10:34Testament sacrifices wouldn't have been enough to make us
- 10:38holy. They had to be done over and
- 10:40over again on repeat, some of them day by day by day.
- 10:44And so Jesus, who was God himself, he came for us when we
- 10:52couldn't keep the covenant. Jesus came and fulfilled the
- 10:56demands of the law, which he knew we would never be able to
- 11:01do. And so today we we come again
- 11:05this year to recommit ourselves to a covenant relationship with
- 11:11God because God has been faithful to us even when maybe
- 11:19we've been unfaithful to him. In his mercy and his grace, God
- 11:25has done for us what we could never do for ourselves.
- 11:29By the sacrificial death and the resurrection of Jesus, and now
- 11:33by the indwelling presence of God's Spirit in our lives, God
- 11:38has made it possible for us to live up to our side of the
- 11:43covenant, right? He invites us now to to enter
- 11:47into that covenant relationship or, or to renew the covenant
- 11:52that he's made with us and we've made with him, not because he's
- 11:55changed or been unfaithful, right, But because it's it's
- 11:59good to be reminded of who God is and who he calls us to be,
- 12:05even when we have been unfaithful.
- 12:10And so we can join with Charles Wesley in asking the question
- 12:17when he said, and can it be that I should gain an interest in the
- 12:23Savior's blood died. He for me who caused his pain
- 12:30for me, who him to death pursued.
- 12:36And he gives us the answer about how we should gain that interest
- 12:41in Christ's death for us. He says it's amazing love,
- 12:46amazing love. How can it be that thou, that
- 12:52you, my God, would die for me, right?
- 12:59He did it. When we couldn't do it, when we
- 13:03couldn't keep our side of the covenant, God pledged himself to
- 13:08us. When we couldn't live up to the
- 13:09demands of the covenant, God came and gave himself for us.
- 13:15He did it in the fullest expression of who God is.
- 13:23Jesus died for you, for me, for us, for the world.
- 13:30And He invites us today to live in that covenant relationship
- 13:35with Him, to allow his Holy Spirit to work in US and
- 13:40transform us and empower us to live as God has called us to
- 13:46live. So that's why today we come
- 13:50again. Not because somehow saying these
- 13:54words year after year makes them true, but to be reminded to hear
- 14:00again that call to walk with God and to respond to the grace that
- 14:07He's pouring into our lives.
