Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: A payroll robbery and a missing witness bring Nick Carter
- 0:03Speaker 1: to a small house on the edge of town where
- 0:06Speaker 1: two elderly women enter the investigation. From Mutual's sustaining run,
- 0:11Speaker 1: this is Nick Carter, Master Detective, in episode 232, The
- 0:15Speaker 1: Case of the Little Old Ladies, first heard April 23, 1946.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Lon Clark stars as Nick Carter with Helen Choate, Ed Latimer,
- 0:28Speaker 1: and John Kane. The script is by Jock McGregor. And now,
- 0:33Speaker 1: the original broadcast.
- 0:45Speaker 2: What's the matter?
- 0:45Speaker 3: What is it?
- 0:46Speaker 4: It's a case for Nick Carter, master detective.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Nick Carter.
- 0:55Speaker 4: Yes, it's another case for that most famous of all manhunters.
- 0:59Speaker 4: The detective whose ability at solving crime is unequaled in
- 1:02Speaker 4: the history of detective fiction. Nick Carter, Master Detective.
- 1:18Speaker 5: But, Mr. Sweet, that sort of thing is entirely out
- 1:20Speaker 5: of my line.
- 1:21Speaker 6: Yes, I suppose it is, Mr.
- 1:22Speaker 5: Carter, but after all, you are our official investigator. All right,
- 1:26Speaker 5: all right. I'll have one of my men take care
- 1:28Speaker 5: of it. Now, tell me again what you want me
- 1:30Speaker 5: to do.
- 1:30Speaker 7: One of our clients is being sued as a result
- 1:32Speaker 7: of an automobile accident in which a woman was very
- 1:35Speaker 7: severely injured. Our client got the name of one witness,
- 1:38Speaker 7: but another witness got away before he could find out
- 1:41Speaker 7: who he was. Now, our client says he was a
- 1:44Speaker 7: very tall, thin chap with red hair, probably in his
- 1:47Speaker 7: late 20s. A bystander told him that he thought this
- 1:51Speaker 7: man lived just a couple of blocks away.
- 1:53Speaker 5: That's all we know about him.
- 1:55Speaker 7: But his testimony is extremely important to us in our
- 1:58Speaker 7: defense of the case.
- 1:59Speaker 3: We must find him at once.
- 2:01Speaker 5: All right, Mr. Sweet, we'll find him. Where was the collision?
- 2:04Speaker 7: Corner of Bullisville Avenue and second place on the north side.
- 2:08Speaker 5: And this red-haired young man lives a couple of blocks
- 2:10Speaker 5: from there in some unknown direction?
- 2:12Speaker 3: That's what we believe, Mr. Carter.
- 2:14Speaker 5: All right, all right. I'll send Mr. McGlynn out at once.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Thank you. As soon as we have something definite, I'll
- 2:18Speaker 5: let you know.
- 2:19Speaker 8: So began a case the like of which had never
- 2:33Speaker 8: been encountered by Nick Carter, master detective.
- 2:37Speaker 4: A search for a missing witness seemed like a simple
- 2:39Speaker 4: routine job. But Nick didn't know about the two old
- 2:43Speaker 4: ladies who lived in the little house on the edge
- 2:45Speaker 4: of town. You'll learn all about it in The Case
- 2:49Speaker 4: of the Little Old Ladies.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Didn't you say you don't know nobody was right here? No,
- 2:58Speaker 3: I don't.
- 3:00Speaker 5: Keep on trying.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Of all the jobs for a great detective like me.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Going from door to door looking for a guy who
- 3:09Speaker 3: probably don't even exist. I never knew Nick Tafal for
- 3:13Speaker 3: such a dumb stunt before. And he had to wish
- 3:15Speaker 3: it on me. I don't know why I don't quit.
- 3:18Speaker 3: 47 houses I've been to. Nobody ever seen a guy
- 3:21Speaker 3: like I'm looking for. But I heard about every kind
- 3:24Speaker 3: of fellow but the kind I want. Yes?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Who is it, please?
- 3:28Speaker 3: Good morning. I wonder if you can tell me anything
- 3:31Speaker 3: about a tall, thin young man about 26, 28 years
- 3:34Speaker 3: old with red hair.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Well, now, let me see. I know almost everybody in
- 3:39Speaker 2: this neighborhood. We've lived here a great many years.
- 3:42Speaker 9: If you'll come in, I'll ask my sister if she.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Recalls such a person. Oh.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Now, ma'am, I don't want to put you to no trouble.
- 3:48Speaker 2: No trouble at all. We'll be glad to help you
- 3:51Speaker 2: if we can. Do come in, please.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Well, all right. Of course, I want to find this fellow,
- 3:57Speaker 3: so if you can help.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Of course you do.
- 4:00Speaker 6: Edith?
- 4:01Speaker 3: Yes?
- 4:02Speaker 2: Will you come here a minute, dear? What is it, Mary?
- 4:05Speaker 2: Can I... Oh, Edith, this is Mr.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Wildo McGlynn, ma'am. Chief assistant to Nick Carter.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Mr. McGlynn. How do you do, Mr. McGlynn?
- 4:16Speaker 5: How are you, ma'am?
- 4:17Speaker 9: Mr. McGlynn says he's looking for a tall, thin young
- 4:19Speaker 9: man with red hair.
- 4:21Speaker 2: About 26 or 28 years old. Do we know such
- 4:25Speaker 2: a man? Well, now let me see. There was James Bond.
- 4:30Speaker 2: He used to live down the block next to Mosher's.
- 4:33Speaker 2: But he moved away last year. Oh, his hair was
- 4:36Speaker 2: really almost blonde, dear. Do you suppose he could mean
- 4:40Speaker 2: Walter Castle? Sister, he must be nearer 35. I suppose
- 4:45Speaker 2: you're right, Edith. How about young Ed Terrence? He lives
- 4:49Speaker 2: over on the next block. treat. Oh, no, sister, he's short.
- 4:53Speaker 9: Almost as short as Cousin Elmer is.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Oh, look, Lady, it's awful good of you to take
- 4:58Speaker 3: all this trouble just to help me find this young man,
- 5:01Speaker 3: but I.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Don't know what trouble at all, Mr.
- 5:03Speaker 5: McGlynn.
- 5:03Speaker 2: We just don't seem to be able to do it. Mary,
- 5:06Speaker 2: maybe Mr. McGlynn would like a cigar while he's waiting.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Of course, I'll get him one. They're in the box
- 5:12Speaker 2: on the table behind him. No, don't get up, Mr. McGlynn.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I'll get it for you.
- 5:16Speaker 3: I I hate to have you doing all this for me, ladies.
- 5:20Speaker 5: If you'll just.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Mr. McGlynn, don't move.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Just sit where you are.
- 5:24Speaker 3: What in the name of.
- 5:25Speaker 9: This is a gun, you feel, on the back of
- 5:28Speaker 9: your neck. And if you don't stay very quiet, it'll
- 5:31Speaker 9: go off. And you'll never find this young man you're
- 5:34Speaker 9: not looking for.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Not looking for?
- 5:37Speaker 2: Shall I tie him up now, Manny?
- 5:39Speaker 3: Yes, eat it.
- 5:40Speaker 9: Tie him up right in his chair so he won't
- 5:43Speaker 9: have to move at all.
- 5:44Speaker 2: And tight enough so he can't move. Very well, Mary.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I brought the rope as we planned.
- 5:51Speaker 3: But look here, ladies. I just want to find a fellow.
- 5:54Speaker 2: You can't fool us, Mr. McGlynn. We know why you're here.
- 5:58Speaker 2: You came here to try to trap us into a confession.
- 6:02Speaker 2: But we were too smart for you. Now that you've
- 6:05Speaker 2: found out where we live, we'll have to go away,
- 6:08Speaker 2: of course. That's why we have to tie you up
- 6:11Speaker 2: so you can't follow us. Oh, Mary, Bill isn't going
- 6:15Speaker 2: to like this. He trusted us, and now look what
- 6:19Speaker 2: has happened. We've failed him.
- 6:21Speaker 9: I know it. I can't imagine how this man found out,
- 6:25Speaker 9: but I'm afraid Bill will never forgive us, sister.
- 6:28Speaker 3: What in the name of all that's holy are you
- 6:30Speaker 3: dames talking about?
- 6:31Speaker 2: You know well enough, Mr. McGlynn. You don't have to
- 6:35Speaker 2: ask us what we've done.
- 6:37Speaker 9: If you didn't know, why are you here?
- 6:40Speaker 2: There, now there. He can't get out of that, I'm sure.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Look, ladies, Nick Carter ain't going to like this, not
- 6:48Speaker 3: at all. He says I always get things balled up,
- 6:51Speaker 3: and now he.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Oh, don't you worry, Mr.
- 6:53Speaker 3: McGlynn.
- 6:54Speaker 2: He can't blame you. We're just too clever for you
- 6:58Speaker 2: and your Mr. Carter. Come, sister, we must pack and...
- 7:04Speaker 2: Is it that all good thieves say? Oh, yes. We
- 7:09Speaker 2: must pack and scram.
- 7:12Speaker 10: Scram.
- 7:22Speaker 3: There you are, Waldo. Free as a bird. Oh, thanks,
- 7:26Speaker 3: Cubby boy. Oh, dear, I can't move. I'm as stiff
- 7:30Speaker 3: as a board. Ah, you'll be all right in a
- 7:32Speaker 3: minute or two.
- 7:33Speaker 5: Now, listen, Waldo. You say these two old ladies tied
- 7:36Speaker 5: you up so as to give them time to move out? Yeah,
- 7:38Speaker 5: that's what they said, Nick.
- 7:40Speaker 3: They thought I had the goods on them for something
- 7:42Speaker 3: I didn't know nothing about.
- 7:44Speaker 5: Couldn't you guess what that something was from what they said?
- 7:46Speaker 3: Not a single guess could I give, Nick, boy. They
- 7:49Speaker 3: was altogether too cagey for me. One of them said
- 7:52Speaker 3: something about thieves, but that was all. Oh, by the way, Nick,
- 7:55Speaker 3: I forgot to ask you. How did you happen to
- 7:57Speaker 3: find me here? That was easy.
- 7:59Speaker 11: Patsy told us what route you were planning to follow,
- 8:01Speaker 11: and we followed you. You had called at the house
- 8:04Speaker 11: on the left, but you never got to the one
- 8:05Speaker 11: on the right. This house being empty, it was a
- 8:08Speaker 11: good bet that you were here. Nick unlocked the door,
- 8:11Speaker 11: and here you were, waiting for it.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Waiting for you? And what else could I be doing
- 8:16Speaker 3: but waiting? Oh, you and your bum jokes.
- 8:20Speaker 5: Now, listen, both of you, listen. There's something going on
- 8:22Speaker 5: here that's bigger than a lost witness. And I'm going
- 8:25Speaker 5: to find out what it is.
- 8:26Speaker 3: But what can we do, Nick? Waldo doesn't know what
- 8:28Speaker 3: it's all about, and the old ladies have gone.
- 8:31Speaker 5: So what do we have to go on? Nothing. We've
- 8:33Speaker 5: got to find something. And the best place to start
- 8:35Speaker 5: looking is right here in this house. So search every
- 8:37Speaker 5: room thoroughly. Don't miss a thing. I'll get busy, both
- 8:40Speaker 5: of you.
- 8:52Speaker 2: And all you found was that burned paper?
- 8:54Speaker 5: That's all, Patsy.
- 8:56Speaker 3: And what good that is, I'm darned if I can see.
- 8:59Speaker 3: When a piece of paper is burned as bad as
- 9:01Speaker 3: that was, so you can't even see if it had
- 9:03Speaker 3: writing on it or not, they give up.
- 9:06Speaker 11: Oh, that's where science comes in, Waldo.
- 9:08Speaker 3: If science can tell Nick what was on that paper,
- 9:11Speaker 3: I'll take my hat off to it. Even old Sim
- 9:14Speaker 3: Carter couldn't do that.
- 9:15Speaker 11: The use of infrared light in reading the writing on
- 9:17Speaker 11: a burned paper.
- 9:18Speaker 6: Is one of the new developments that.
- 9:19Speaker 5: Have come into.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Oh, Nick, did you find anything worthwhile?
- 9:22Speaker 5: Maybe yes and maybe no. Fortunately, that burned paper we
- 9:25Speaker 5: found on the ashtray was a good grade of paper
- 9:27Speaker 5: and didn't crumble before I could look it over.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Well, what'd you find, Nick?
- 9:30Speaker 5: That piece of paper was really two separate pieces of paper.
- 9:34Speaker 5: One was a wrapper off a bundle of bills, showing
- 9:36Speaker 5: that the package was put up by the first mutual
- 9:38Speaker 5: bank on Canal Street and had contained $ 100, probably in
- 9:41Speaker 5: small bills. The other was part of a letter.
- 9:44Speaker 12: Oh, what did it say?
- 9:45Speaker 5: All I could make out was, Another month, dear ass,
- 9:49Speaker 5: it'll be safe to use the money. So we... And
- 9:52Speaker 5: that's all. That's not the help that is. Patsy, do
- 9:55Speaker 5: we have any record of the first mutual bank being
- 9:57Speaker 5: robbed in the last year or so?
- 9:58Speaker 3: Oh, I'll see, Ned.
- 10:00Speaker 5: The money this rapper was on obviously came straight from
- 10:02Speaker 5: the bank.
- 10:03Speaker 12: No, nothing on the first mutual at all.
- 10:06Speaker 2: But the records show there was a.
- 10:07Speaker 12: Payroll robbery about six months ago in which the payroll
- 10:11Speaker 12: messenger was robbed of $ 153, 000 that came from that bank.
- 10:15Speaker 5: What was the firm that was robbed?
- 10:17Speaker 2: It was the.
- 10:17Speaker 12: Brownson Industrial Corporation just across the river. You know, that
- 10:21Speaker 12: big plant on Market Street.
- 10:22Speaker 5: All right. Let's call on the Brownson Industrial Corporation. I'm
- 10:27Speaker 5: going to see this thing through to the end. You
- 10:38Speaker 5: want to see me, mister? I do. You're the payroll messenger?
- 10:42Speaker 5: It was robbed about six months ago. Who are you?
- 10:45Speaker 6: This is Nick Carter. Tell him what you know about it.
- 10:48Speaker 5: Oh, okay, yeah.
- 10:50Speaker 6: The guards that came with me from the bank left
- 10:52Speaker 6: me at the side door of the office building, as usual,
- 10:55Speaker 6: and I came along inside. There's a short corridor there,
- 10:58Speaker 6: about ten feet long, with a turn at the end,
- 11:01Speaker 6: leads into the general office. Well, I was just coming
- 11:04Speaker 6: to the turn when a couple of old ladies.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Stopped me and... Later, Walter, later. You say two old ladies?
- 11:11Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 11:11Speaker 6: This couple of old ladies stopped me and asked me
- 11:13Speaker 6: how to get to the metal shop.
- 11:15Speaker 3: I stopped to tell them, when all of a sudden,
- 11:17Speaker 3: I got a sack on the back of their head.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Knocked me cold.
- 11:21Speaker 5: Then what happened?
- 11:22Speaker 3: How do I know? I was out cold.
- 11:24Speaker 6: And when I came to, the assistant cashier was bending
- 11:27Speaker 6: over me, trying to wake me up.
- 11:29Speaker 3: My money bag was cut open. The money was gone.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Every nickel of it.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Did anyone else see these two old ladies around?
- 11:35Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:36Speaker 6: The gate man who let them in. They said he
- 11:38Speaker 6: was coming to see their nephew, Walter Bascom, a clerk
- 11:41Speaker 6: in the office here. So he let him go by
- 11:43Speaker 6: without waiting for an okay. But Bascom never saw him.
- 11:47Speaker 6: He says he ain't even got an aunt. And he
- 11:49Speaker 6: didn't leave his desk all afternoon.
- 11:51Speaker 5: Were they seen after the robbery?
- 11:52Speaker 6: Oh, they was out of the gate before the alarm
- 11:54Speaker 6: was give out. The gate man saw them go. Can
- 11:57Speaker 6: you describe them? Well, they look like a couple of
- 12:00Speaker 6: sweet little old ladies. Maybe like your pet grandmother. One
- 12:04Speaker 6: was short and chubby. The other was about middle size,
- 12:07Speaker 6: kind of slender-like.
- 12:08Speaker 3: The same, Nick. The very same.
- 12:10Speaker 5: You're sure of that, Waldo?
- 12:11Speaker 3: There couldn't be no mistake, Nick.
- 12:13Speaker 6: Look, you didn't find any clues as to who slugged you?
- 12:17Speaker 6: No suspects at all?
- 12:18Speaker 5: Nah, not a one.
- 12:19Speaker 6: But it must have been somebody works in here. Couldn't
- 12:22Speaker 6: have happened like it did no other way.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Okay, thanks. Well, so long. Well, Nick, looks as if
- 12:30Speaker 5: this is as far as we go. No, Matty, there's
- 12:32Speaker 5: just one more chance.
- 12:33Speaker 10: Huh?
- 12:34Speaker 5: I have the photograph I made of the piece of
- 12:37Speaker 5: burned letter we found at the old lady's place.
- 12:39Speaker 11: Yeah?
- 12:40Speaker 5: The writer was the thief, it seems very probable. And
- 12:42Speaker 5: if he does work here, as that messenger seemed to think...
- 12:45Speaker 5: We might compare the writing on the letter with samples
- 12:47Speaker 5: of the writing of the employees in the plant.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Oh, but, Nick, that would take forever. There are several
- 12:50Speaker 2: thousand employees here.
- 12:52Speaker 6: Yeah, them two dames would die of old age before
- 12:54Speaker 6: we got that job done like, isn't it?
- 12:56Speaker 3: Nick.
- 12:57Speaker 5: Yes, Waldo?
- 12:58Speaker 3: I just happen to remember. When them two old dames
- 13:00Speaker 3: was tying me up, they kept talking about somebody named Bill.
- 13:04Speaker 5: You sure of that?
- 13:05Speaker 3: Sure, I'm sure. They said this Bill was going to
- 13:07Speaker 3: be pretty sore at them for getting found out.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Oh, Nick, this makes the search for the thief a
- 13:11Speaker 2: whole lot easier.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Why, sure.
- 13:13Speaker 6: We just look at the handwriting of every guy in
- 13:15Speaker 6: the plant named William. There may be a lot of them,
- 13:17Speaker 6: but it'll be a whole lot easier than checking up
- 13:19Speaker 6: on everybody who works here. Oh, Walter, it looks as
- 13:22Speaker 6: if you remember that name just in time.
- 13:24Speaker 5: Come on. The personnel manager ought to be able to
- 13:26Speaker 5: dig up a specimen of this Bill's handwriting for us.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Much as I regret to say it, It isn't this
- 13:39Speaker 5: William either.
- 13:40Speaker 6: You mean to say that out of 347 guys named
- 13:43Speaker 6: William who signed these employment cards the personnel manager gave.
- 13:47Speaker 5: Us, there ain't one that writes like the sample in
- 13:49Speaker 5: the photograph? To the train's eye, there's not one of
- 13:52Speaker 5: them that's the same.
- 13:54Speaker 12: Oh, Nick, that means the whole theory that an employee
- 13:57Speaker 12: stole the money is out the window.
- 13:58Speaker 6: Yeah, that leaves us exactly nowhere.
- 14:02Speaker 13: Nick!
- 14:02Speaker 2: Nick!
- 14:02Speaker 3: Maybe the guy's name ain't William at all. Bill could
- 14:06Speaker 3: stand for some other name.
- 14:07Speaker 5: Why, of course, Walter. That's the answer. It must be.
- 14:09Speaker 5: His name was Wilbur or Wilford.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Well, come on.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Let's get busy.
- 14:13Speaker 12: We only have a few hundred more names to look through.
- 14:24Speaker 5: Yes. This is it, all right.
- 14:26Speaker 10: Who is it, Frank?
- 14:27Speaker 5: Wilford Bergen. Works in the stockroom.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Mr.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Brown, where's the stockroom? I'd like to talk to this Bergen.
- 14:33Speaker 3: It's in the next building back of this one.
- 14:36Speaker 5: You'll probably find him at his desk.
- 14:37Speaker 3: It's just to the right of the door. Would you
- 14:40Speaker 3: like to have me call him and tell him you
- 14:41Speaker 3: want to see him?
- 14:42Speaker 5: No, thanks. We don't want to warn him we're coming.
- 14:44Speaker 5: We don't want him to get away before we have
- 14:45Speaker 5: a talk with him.
- 14:50Speaker 6: Boy, that job sure was a neat set-up. This Bergen
- 14:59Speaker 6: watches the messenger, sees how he goes through this little
- 15:02Speaker 6: corridor every time he comes back for the payroll, tells
- 15:06Speaker 6: the old dames what to do, and it all works
- 15:10Speaker 6: out just as slick as grief. Yes, the old lady
- 15:12Speaker 6: stopped him in the right place and Bergen socked him.
- 15:14Speaker 6: And they shielded him while he cut open the money bag.
- 15:17Speaker 6: And they calmly went home, taking their money with them,
- 15:19Speaker 6: probably in one of those shopping bags women carry.
- 15:21Speaker 2: And Bergen went back to work, and that was that.
- 15:24Speaker 6: And they're waiting until the money cools off so they
- 15:27Speaker 6: can spend it.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Uh-huh.
- 15:28Speaker 6: I wonder where they hid it while they're waiting.
- 15:30Speaker 5: I hope Bergen will answer that for us. There he is, Nick. Uh-oh.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Yes.
- 15:36Speaker 5: Are you Wilfred Bergen? That's right. Bergen, this is Nick Carter.
- 15:39Speaker 6: He wants to ask you a few questions.
- 15:41Speaker 5: Questions? About what?
- 15:43Speaker 11: Bergen.
- 15:45Speaker 5: Where did you hide the money you got from the
- 15:46Speaker 5: payroll robbery six months ago? Why, I... I don't know
- 15:49Speaker 5: what you're talking about.
- 15:50Speaker 2: No?
- 15:51Speaker 5: I think you do. You and your aunts knocked out
- 15:54Speaker 5: the messenger and stole the payroll amounting to $ 153, 000. Now,
- 15:57Speaker 5: what did you do with it? You're crazy. I had
- 15:58Speaker 5: nothing to do with that. Better come clean, Bergen. We
- 16:00Speaker 5: got you dead to rights. You think you can make
- 16:02Speaker 5: me confess something I didn't do?
- 16:03Speaker 6: You're nuts.
- 16:03Speaker 5: Bergen, is this your employment card?
- 16:06Speaker 6: Yes, it is.
- 16:06Speaker 5: What about it? Does this photograph show part of a
- 16:08Speaker 5: letter you wrote to your aunts recently?
- 16:09Speaker 3: Let me see it.
- 16:10Speaker 5: Hey, come back here.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Stop or I'll shoot you.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Nick, he's falling down the stairs.
- 16:15Speaker 6: Come on, maybe he isn't hurt bad. You won't die, Bergen.
- 16:24Speaker 6: You only got shot in the leg.
- 16:25Speaker 5: My neck. My neck.
- 16:30Speaker 3: I can't move.
- 16:31Speaker 5: Let me see. You shot him in the leg, all right, Matty.
- 16:37Speaker 5: But in falling downstairs, he broke his neck. Oh, Nick, no. Now, Bergen,
- 16:41Speaker 5: see here. I'm afraid you haven't long to live. Before
- 16:45Speaker 5: you go, tell me, where's the money? Isn't there something
- 16:49Speaker 5: we can do for a minute? I'm afraid not, Betsy. Bergen,
- 16:53Speaker 5: where did you hide the money? I buried it where
- 17:00Speaker 5: you'll never find it. You might as well tell us
- 17:02Speaker 5: where you buried it, Bergen. We can get your ranch
- 17:04Speaker 5: to tell.
- 17:04Speaker 14: They'll never tell you. I did it alone. Find it
- 17:12Speaker 14: if you can. I stole.
- 17:17Speaker 2: It.
- 17:18Speaker 5: I can't have it. No one... Is he gone, Nick? Yes, Matty.
- 17:29Speaker 5: He's dead.
- 17:31Speaker 12: And the secret of where he hid the money died
- 17:33Speaker 12: with him.
- 17:34Speaker 6: Well, look, I ain't given up yet.
- 17:36Speaker 7: If he buried it like he said, it's probably buried
- 17:39Speaker 7: somewhere around that house where his aunts lived. Now, I'm
- 17:42Speaker 7: going to have a gang start digging there bright and
- 17:45Speaker 7: early tomorrow morning.
- 17:46Speaker 5: Good luck to you, Matty. I'll drop in on you
- 17:48Speaker 5: later to see how you make out.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Hello, Sergeant. Having fun?
- 17:59Speaker 5: Hi, Matty. How are you making out?
- 18:01Speaker 6: As if I couldn't see for myself. Oh, I ain't
- 18:04Speaker 6: making out, Nick. We've been over this whole doggone lot
- 18:08Speaker 6: and not a sign of the money.
- 18:10Speaker 5: Well, apparently Bergen must have buried it outside the limits
- 18:12Speaker 5: of the property. Well, if he did, he can stay
- 18:15Speaker 5: there for all of me. Do you realize, Nick, that
- 18:17Speaker 5: this is the last street in this section? From here out,
- 18:21Speaker 5: it's open country.
- 18:22Speaker 6: And the darn stuff could be buried anywhere for the
- 18:25Speaker 6: next five miles. Matty, if I can tell you right
- 18:27Speaker 6: where to dig for the money, will you try it
- 18:29Speaker 6: once more? Nick Carter, you've been holding out on me again,
- 18:32Speaker 6: so help me out.
- 18:33Speaker 5: No, no, no, I haven't been holding out on you.
- 18:35Speaker 5: That's to answer my question.
- 18:37Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll try it once more. But look, if it
- 18:39Speaker 6: don't work, keep away from me next time I see you.
- 18:42Speaker 5: Okay, Manny. Meet me here in the morning about 10 o'clock.
- 18:45Speaker 5: I may have something for you. So long.
- 18:47Speaker 12: So long, Sergeant. Uh, Nick, do you really have an idea?
- 18:52Speaker 5: I do. I believe I can come back here tonight
- 18:54Speaker 5: and locate the exact spot for him.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Well, tell me, Nick, what's your plan?
- 18:57Speaker 5: I'm going to get hold of an army officer I
- 18:59Speaker 5: know and have him help me.
- 19:00Speaker 12: Help you what?
- 19:01Speaker 5: Locate the money.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Is that all you're going to tell me?
- 19:04Speaker 5: That's all for now. I like to surprise you, Patsy.
- 19:08Speaker 12: Oh, someday you'll tell me something and I'll surprise you.
- 19:11Speaker 2: I'll probably drop dead at your feet.
- 19:22Speaker 5: Sorry this is such a blind search, Lieutenant. But as
- 19:25Speaker 5: I said, we have no idea where the money was buried.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Oh, that's all right, Mr. Carter.
- 19:29Speaker 6: I'm used to working like this.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Not too dark for you, is it? Oh, no, indeed.
- 19:33Speaker 6: I've worked this gadget on darker nights than this and
- 19:35Speaker 6: got results.
- 19:36Speaker 5: I suppose we'll swing over this way for a change.
- 19:38Speaker 5: We've pretty well covered the ground on that side. Okay, Mr. Carter.
- 19:41Speaker 5: Whatever you say. Over here, maybe?
- 19:44Speaker 3: Yes.
- 19:45Speaker 5: If we don't find anything in this trip, I'm afraid we'll... Hey,
- 19:48Speaker 5: wait a minute. Found something? I think so.
- 19:52Speaker 7: Yes.
- 19:53Speaker 5: Yes, this is it, I'm sure. No question about it?
- 19:56Speaker 6: None at all.
- 19:56Speaker 5: I'm certain that if you dig here, you'll find the money. Well,
- 20:00Speaker 5: if the money's there, Matty will find it.
- 20:02Speaker 10: But we don't want your Matty to find it.
- 20:05Speaker 5: Who are you?
- 20:06Speaker 10: We want to find it ourselves.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Of course we do. The money belongs to us.
- 20:11Speaker 7: Now.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Why, of course.
- 20:14Speaker 5: The two old ladies have tied Waldo up and left
- 20:17Speaker 5: him in the house the other night. What brings you
- 20:20Speaker 5: back here now?
- 20:21Speaker 2: The money, of course.
- 20:22Speaker 5: I mean, how did you know we were out here?
- 20:24Speaker 9: We didn't, but we read in the late evening paper
- 20:27Speaker 9: last night that the killing of our nephew Bill had
- 20:30Speaker 9: solved the payroll robbery and that the case was closed.
- 20:34Speaker 2: So we felt that it would be perfectly safe to
- 20:36Speaker 2: come back here and get our money. And when we did,
- 20:40Speaker 2: we found you here.
- 20:42Speaker 9: We've been watching you for a long time from behind
- 20:45Speaker 9: the trees.
- 20:46Speaker 5: Oh, yes. And now that you're here, how do you
- 20:49Speaker 5: propose to go about digging it up?
- 20:51Speaker 13: Oh, I'm sure we can persuade you to do that.
- 20:55Speaker 2: For us, Mr. Carter.
- 20:56Speaker 4: Oh, really?
- 20:57Speaker 5: What makes you think so?
- 20:59Speaker 2: This.
- 20:59Speaker 11: Hey.
- 21:01Speaker 3: But I got a gun, Mr. Carter.
- 21:02Speaker 2: We have two guns, one for each of us. And
- 21:05Speaker 2: we both know how to shoot very straight. Our dear
- 21:08Speaker 2: departed father taught us when we were girls.
- 21:11Speaker 5: Now look, ladies, you better let me have those guns
- 21:13Speaker 5: or somebody might get hurt.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Nobody's going to get hurt, Mr. Carter, if you start digging.
- 21:18Speaker 5: Now look here, a joke's a joke. This is getting too.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Mr.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Carter, put your hands up over your head.
- 21:24Speaker 9: Oh.
- 21:24Speaker 2: You too, soldier. You put your hands up, too.
- 21:27Speaker 5: What do we do, Mr.
- 21:28Speaker 10: Carter?
- 21:28Speaker 5: We don't do anything. We just.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Hey!
- 21:30Speaker 5: It went right past my ear.
- 21:32Speaker 10: Are you putting your hands above your head now, mister?
- 21:37Speaker 5: Now, see here, this is all very silly. I guess
- 21:39Speaker 5: we'd better do it. I'd rather be silly than dead.
- 21:41Speaker 9: That's very wise of you.
- 21:43Speaker 5: Okay, okay, my hands are up.
- 21:45Speaker 10: You'd better see if either of them is carrying a.
- 21:48Speaker 4: Pistol, sister.
- 21:49Speaker 2: I read in a book that that's always the first
- 21:52Speaker 2: thing to do in such cases.
- 21:54Speaker 5: Excuse me, please.
- 21:57Speaker 2: The soldier doesn't have one.
- 21:59Speaker 10: Oh?
- 22:00Speaker 5: Oh, look, Edith.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Mr. Carter has two pistols. Aren't they beautiful? Oh, put
- 22:07Speaker 2: them over by that stump, Mary, where they'll be safe. Now,
- 22:12Speaker 2: will you start digging, Mr. Carter?
- 22:15Speaker 3: I can't.
- 22:15Speaker 5: I haven't a shovel.
- 22:16Speaker 9: I'll get you one. I remember seeing one in the
- 22:19Speaker 9: cellar of our house.
- 22:20Speaker 10: It isn't a very good one, but.
- 22:22Speaker 2: You can use it.
- 22:23Speaker 10: You wait right there.
- 22:24Speaker 9: I'll be back.
- 22:25Speaker 2: He'll wait for you, sister. Won't you, Mr. Carter?
- 22:31Speaker 5: It looks that way. But now look here, it's no good.
- 22:34Speaker 5: The police will be here before I can possibly get
- 22:36Speaker 5: the hole deep enough to find the money. It's three
- 22:38Speaker 5: o'clock already.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Oh, then I'm afraid that will mean you'll have to hurry, Mr.
- 22:42Speaker 6: Carter.
- 22:42Speaker 2: We must have the money before the police come back.
- 22:46Speaker 2: So you'd better take your coat off and get ready
- 22:50Speaker 2: to dig real fast. Look, sister, the soldier has gone
- 23:04Speaker 2: to sleep. Yes, poor dear. He must be all worn
- 23:08Speaker 2: out watching Mr. Carter work. Oh, what time is it?
- 23:12Speaker 5: Seven-thirty.
- 23:14Speaker 9: Oh, dear, I do hope we can find the money
- 23:16Speaker 9: before the police arrive. Mr.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Carter?
- 23:20Speaker 10: Yes? Please dig a little faster.
- 23:23Speaker 2: It's getting late.
- 23:25Speaker 5: No problem. No problem. That's it, all right. Well, at
- 23:43Speaker 5: least I have the satisfaction of knowing we found the
- 23:45Speaker 5: right place. A little after ten. Matty ought to be
- 23:49Speaker 5: here by now. Are you two still up there?
- 23:53Speaker 3: Yes, we are.
- 23:55Speaker 10: So don't stop digging.
- 23:57Speaker 2: We must get that box before the police arrive.
- 24:00Speaker 5: I don't have to dig anymore. I found it.
- 24:02Speaker 2: You found it? Sister, sister, wake up.
- 24:06Speaker 9: Mr.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Carter's found the money for us. Isn't he nice?
- 24:11Speaker 10: He's found it.
- 24:13Speaker 9: Oh, what a lovely man he is.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Soldier, soldier.
- 24:17Speaker 10: Yes, yeah?
- 24:18Speaker 2: Will you help Mr.
- 24:19Speaker 10: Carter get the box out of the hole, please?
- 24:22Speaker 6: You mean he's found it?
- 24:24Speaker 5: Yes, yes, I found it. Oh, here it is. Can
- 24:26Speaker 5: you reach it?
- 24:28Speaker 6: Just a little higher.
- 24:29Speaker 5: That's it.
- 24:30Speaker 3: I've got it.
- 24:31Speaker 13: My, that isn't a very big box to hold all
- 24:34Speaker 13: that money, is it?
- 24:36Speaker 10: Why, I believe I.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Could carry that myself. Of course we can.
- 24:40Speaker 10: Here, soldier, I'll take it.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Here you are.
- 24:44Speaker 10: Thank you. Now, please jump down into the hole with Mr.
- 24:48Speaker 9: Carter.
- 24:48Speaker 5: Do what?
- 24:49Speaker 10: Jump into the hole with Mr. Carter.
- 24:52Speaker 12: It's big enough to hold you both.
- 24:54Speaker 10: And I think we'll be gone by the time you
- 24:56Speaker 10: get out. The hole is over eight feet deep.
- 25:00Speaker 5: You better do as she says, Lieutenant. You know how
- 25:02Speaker 5: loudly that gun of hers can speak.
- 25:04Speaker 3: Okay.
- 25:05Speaker 5: Watch out. How do you do?
- 25:08Speaker 13: Oh, thank you both very much. Yes, thank you so much.
- 25:13Speaker 13: I hope we meet again sometime.
- 25:16Speaker 10: Goodbye. Goodbye.
- 25:19Speaker 6: Oh, I hope this story never gets around. Nick Carter
- 25:22Speaker 6: and a lieutenant in the U.S. Engineers made prisoner by
- 25:25Speaker 6: two little old ladies.
- 25:26Speaker 5: And two little old guns. You can't forget those. Well,
- 25:30Speaker 5: come on. Let's get out of here. Give me a boost,
- 25:31Speaker 5: will you?
- 25:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:31Speaker 5: And I'll haul you out. I rather think they won't
- 25:34Speaker 5: get very far.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Oh, I'm so glad we found this money before those
- 25:46Speaker 2: horrid policemen got here. Oh, yes.
- 25:49Speaker 9: We can go in the house and wrap it up
- 25:51Speaker 9: so no one will know what it is.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Yes.
- 25:53Speaker 9: Then we can go back to.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Our old home and live comfortably for the rest of
- 25:58Speaker 2: our days. Yes, dear. Oh, watch out for that first step.
- 26:03Speaker 6: That'll be far enough.
- 26:04Speaker 5: Stand right where you are.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Where did you come from?
- 26:08Speaker 3: Watch out for them, Mattie. They're dangerous, I know.
- 26:10Speaker 2: What do you want with us, officer?
- 26:14Speaker 6: I want you and I want that box of money
- 26:15Speaker 6: you got there. And don't try reaching for your guns.
- 26:19Speaker 5: It won't be healthy for you.
- 26:20Speaker 12: Oh, look, Sergeant, there comes Nick and that army man.
- 26:22Speaker 10: What?
- 26:23Speaker 2: Oh, dear, they must have gotten out of the hole.
- 26:27Speaker 3: You mean Nick and the other guy was in the
- 26:29Speaker 3: hole where that box was?
- 26:31Speaker 11: Yes.
- 26:31Speaker 9: We hoped they wouldn't get out till after we'd gone.
- 26:34Speaker 9: That nice Mr. Carter dug the money up for us
- 26:37Speaker 9: all by himself.
- 26:39Speaker 12: Nick dug it up?
- 26:40Speaker 3: Well, I never.
- 26:42Speaker 5: Hey, hey, Mary, have you got the money?
- 26:43Speaker 6: Yeah, the money and the dames both, and they won't
- 26:46Speaker 6: get away from me, I can tell you.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Well, I gotta say one thing for old Sim Carter.
- 26:50Speaker 3: He never let a couple of old dames get him
- 26:52Speaker 3: in a hole. He knew how to handle women, he did.
- 26:56Speaker 3: What happened to all your science, Nick?
- 26:58Speaker 5: The science was on their side this time, in the
- 27:01Speaker 5: form of a couple of guns. And they could shoot them, too,
- 27:03Speaker 5: believe me.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Now, you both stopped razzing Nick. He did the best
- 27:07Speaker 2: he could, didn't you, Nick?
- 27:09Speaker 5: Yes, Patsy, I did the best I could. I stalled
- 27:11Speaker 5: around with the digging until time for Maddie to show up.
- 27:14Speaker 5: Of course, if they hadn't been two old ladies, I
- 27:15Speaker 5: could have... Yeah, sure, sure, we know.
- 27:18Speaker 6: If they hadn't been so weak, you could have overpowered
- 27:20Speaker 6: them both, single-handedly.
- 27:22Speaker 3: Hey, Nick, tell me, how'd you ever find where that
- 27:25Speaker 3: money was buried? Patsy said you were using some kind
- 27:28Speaker 3: of a trick device.
- 27:29Speaker 5: Just a mine detector, Waldo, same as they use in
- 27:31Speaker 5: the war to find hidden mines. The detector can find
- 27:33Speaker 5: hidden metal even when it's buried as deep as this
- 27:35Speaker 5: box was.
- 27:35Speaker 3: How deep was it, Nick?
- 27:36Speaker 5: Eight feet. And if you don't believe me, look at
- 27:38Speaker 5: these blisters. Nick, look.
- 27:42Speaker 2: See that chap standing there watching us?
- 27:44Speaker 5: Certainly I see him. What about him?
- 27:45Speaker 2: Red hair, tall, thin.
- 27:47Speaker 12: Must live in this neighborhood or he wouldn't be standing
- 27:49Speaker 12: there kibitzing. Isn't that the witness Waldo started out to find?
- 27:54Speaker 5: You're right, Betsy. And as Maddie has the thieves and
- 27:57Speaker 5: the money, and we have our witness, we can consider
- 27:59Speaker 5: the case closed. Except for these blisters of money.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Nick, boy, your old father used to say, never be
- 28:06Speaker 3: ashamed of honest toil. Remember that, Nick. Never be ashamed
- 28:11Speaker 3: of honest toil, even if you do happen to be
- 28:13Speaker 3: doing it at the point of a gun.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Well, Nick, how about a few highlights on next week's show,
- 28:26Speaker 4: just to whet our appetite?
- 28:27Speaker 5: Good idea, Ken. My story next week is about a
- 28:29Speaker 5: man who was killed by a rifle shot, but the
- 28:31Speaker 5: bullet came from the wrong gun.
- 28:33Speaker 2: And the latter was too long.
- 28:34Speaker 5: The which was what?
- 28:35Speaker 2: The latter was too long. So what?
- 28:37Speaker 5: That's the story, together with the fact that the boys'
- 28:39Speaker 5: club met very late that night.
- 28:40Speaker 4: That's enough. That's enough. What do you call this weird
- 28:43Speaker 4: combination of clues?
- 28:45Speaker 5: I call it the case of the wrong clue.
