- 0:09Speaker 2: at the moment. But we have recorded a summer series
- 0:12Speaker 2: that we're very excited about.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Cocktail.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Please, can you rub some oil on my back?
- 0:19Speaker 1: Get the bullboard to do that.
- 0:21Speaker 2: So those are all orders for me to go and fulfill.
- 0:23Speaker 2: By the way, so I should jump off this mic
- 0:24Speaker 2: and go and look after the women. But we've got
- 0:27Speaker 2: an amazing lineup of guests and each week we talk
- 0:29Speaker 2: to a different guest. We're very excited people who you
- 0:32Speaker 2: will know from netball and they've come in and had
- 0:35Speaker 2: just some really fabulous fun chats with us. So this
- 0:38Speaker 2: is our summer series. We hope you enjoy it.
- 0:40Speaker 4: Enjoy guys, happy summer.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Hello and welcome to the No Dribble Summer Series. As
- 0:59Speaker 2: you know, each week we have a very special guest
- 1:01Speaker 2: come and join us for a wide ranging chat. My
- 1:05Speaker 2: name's Carolyn Swindell.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Cath Cox.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Miss.
- 1:08Speaker 2: We're all here and we have another extraordinary mystery guest.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Kath is sitting here with her blindfold on looking marvelous.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I've got to say, you're looking marvelous too.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Well with the Brian fold on. Thank you very much,
- 1:23Speaker 2: so harsh, All right, kat, are you ready to guess
- 1:27Speaker 2: our mystery guest? Fantastic? Our mystery guest is one hundred
- 1:30Speaker 2: and seventy three centimeters tour though you're gonna.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Say seventy two. I was getting excited Georgie seventy two. Okay,
- 1:36Speaker 1: so it's not Georgie. Okay.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Our mystery guest is a Gemini another one. Yeah, I
- 1:42Speaker 2: know it's interesting, isn't it.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Another two faced somebody? Okay, yes, that's so hard.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Our mystery guest was born in Lizmore but does not
- 1:51Speaker 2: live there anymore.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Ooh hotel?
- 1:55Speaker 1: Yeah okay, no, doesn't help.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Our mystery guest has quite a grown up job as
- 2:01Speaker 2: a rehab counselor oh a job. Our mystery guests also
- 2:08Speaker 2: used to it for Les Mills International.
- 2:11Speaker 3: So that fit.
- 2:12Speaker 1: It's fit as an instructor okay, so fit? Yeah, okay,
- 2:16Speaker 1: Oh god, that's not a player, or it's a retired player. Okay.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Our mystery guest has been to two Commonwealth Games and
- 2:24Speaker 2: two World Cups.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Okay, so it's a retired player. Oh yeah.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Our mystery guests played an extremely important role in the
- 2:34Speaker 2: twenty twenty four sun Corpse Super Netball Grand Final.
- 2:38Speaker 1: What I'm confused?
- 2:40Speaker 2: Okay, our mystery guest got her sea badge, age sixteen drops.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Okay, an arm fire.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Our mystery guest might not be entirely pleased with you,
- 2:54Speaker 2: I've got to say. But anyway, our mystery guests, if
- 2:56Speaker 2: you can get it with this one. Yeah, if we
- 2:59Speaker 2: were out drinking with her and we said can we
- 3:01Speaker 2: buy you a drink, our mystery guess would ask for
- 3:04Speaker 2: an apparol sprits ha ha.
- 3:07Speaker 1: There's something wrong with me that I always get it
- 3:09Speaker 1: at this point, isn't it? Okay? So umpire fit as
- 3:13Speaker 1: part of the Grand Final last year. It loves a
- 3:15Speaker 1: little tipple that's orange. It's got to be Rachel.
- 3:18Speaker 3: It's Rachel.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Welcome right, Hello, Rachel welcome No Dable Summer Series.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Hello, and I feel like my top is a bit
- 3:27Speaker 3: apparol that works? Now.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I have to ask you then, how many of those
- 3:33Speaker 1: have you been drinking recently? Because you've just announced your
- 3:36Speaker 1: retirement around congratulations?
- 3:38Speaker 3: Thank you, thanks? Yeah, you know, had a few after
- 3:42Speaker 3: the Grand Final, that's for sure.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Yeah, And so what prompted the retirement having had such
- 3:48Speaker 1: a successful career.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Age and feeling like it was it was time. I've
- 3:58Speaker 3: done it for a long time, ready for the young
- 4:01Speaker 3: ones to take over.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yeah, you're pretty haven't you.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I've done I've done everything. I don't live near the airport,
- 4:12Speaker 3: got a family, you know, it's it's time.
- 4:16Speaker 2: You've got a daughter.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Yeah, my daughter is eight. I think she's the same
- 4:19Speaker 3: age as your daughter.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Cat she is. Yes, is she playing.
- 4:23Speaker 3: She of course is playing netball?
- 4:25Speaker 1: Yes, Oh my gosh. Are you a stickler for the rules?
- 4:29Speaker 3: Well, I got I got such into coaching last last year,
- 4:34Speaker 3: so when she was seven, so first year of net
- 4:36Speaker 3: set go. So you kind of can't be right.
- 4:41Speaker 1: That would be so hard for you.
- 4:44Speaker 3: I would literally we like do the game down at
- 4:46Speaker 3: the courts at Berkeley on Saturday morning and then drive
- 4:50Speaker 3: to the airport and do SSN.
- 4:53Speaker 2: So it was you know which makes you swear more
- 4:55Speaker 2: under your breath? Sun cop super netball or net set go?
- 4:59Speaker 3: Oh? I know, net set go. Yeah. I just feel
- 5:05Speaker 3: like it's constantly just going. Everybody's spread out, stop bouncing
- 5:12Speaker 3: my netballs while I'm talking.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Rachel.
- 5:16Speaker 5: My daughter is thirteen, so I'm a little bit further
- 5:18Speaker 5: along my netball child coaching journey than you.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Congratulations.
- 5:23Speaker 5: Well yeah, I don't know that's the word. But anyway,
- 5:26Speaker 5: it's going to be interesting, right because my team is
- 5:28Speaker 5: a really good defensive team. But I just have forgot
- 5:32Speaker 5: to teach them how to attack and how to shoot.
- 5:34Speaker 5: I suspect Catherine's team is going to be really good
- 5:36Speaker 5: at shooting and attacking and maybe lacking in defense. Do
- 5:39Speaker 5: you think your kids teams will just know the rules, know.
- 5:41Speaker 3: All the rules? Yeah, yeah, maybe I suppose. Yeah when
- 5:46Speaker 3: you played, what did you play? Oh it's pretty good
- 5:49Speaker 3: wing defense? Yeah, there it is.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I'm sorry, it's just set up for me to smash
- 5:56Speaker 1: it back over the fence. Well that's why she turned
- 5:58Speaker 1: into an umpire. Right wing defense. Umpire seems like the
- 6:02Speaker 1: natural progression.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Katrine has no respect.
- 6:07Speaker 3: What about Simone simoone, well's best wing defense? Not an umpire?
- 6:13Speaker 1: Raged? You know what I do? Jest, but the wing
- 6:16Speaker 1: defenses are typically the best players in every team. I just,
- 6:20Speaker 1: you know, I've got to have my thing.
- 6:23Speaker 3: You know, I was an al right, I wasn't a
- 6:24Speaker 3: great player, but you know, but that was specialty.
- 6:27Speaker 1: How come umpiring took over? Then? At what stage did
- 6:29Speaker 1: that happen.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Yeah, good question. I umpired the whole time. I literally
- 6:33Speaker 3: was that like nerdy kid. My mum taught me to
- 6:36Speaker 3: umpire from as soon as I.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Was old enough, and she was an umpire.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Yeah, mum was a national bee umpire. She taught me
- 6:48Speaker 3: how to umpire, and I umpired, and I played, and
- 6:50Speaker 3: I coached and did all of that for ages, years
- 6:54Speaker 3: and years and years, and I don't know, I just
- 6:58Speaker 3: I don't think I was a great coach then either.
- 7:02Speaker 3: And eventually I stopped playing and just kept umpiring, and
- 7:06Speaker 3: somewhere along the line someone went, oh you're you know,
- 7:08Speaker 3: you're all right at that, so kept progressing through.
- 7:12Speaker 5: So when your mum watches you umpire, does she watch
- 7:15Speaker 5: the game or does she actually watch you umpire? She
- 7:17Speaker 5: goes to a big game, so say, you know, she
- 7:19Speaker 5: rocked up to the finals, would she be like, Okay,
- 7:21Speaker 5: I'm not watching the actual game.
- 7:22Speaker 3: I'm watching my girl lower whistle. Oh, my parents are
- 7:25Speaker 3: pretty like my parents are pretty hardcore sports watchers, sports fans,
- 7:30Speaker 3: so they'll appreciate the game, but you know, watch watch
- 7:34Speaker 3: me as well.
- 7:36Speaker 1: You talked before about having to watch your daughter play
- 7:39Speaker 1: and then go to the airport. And we've spoken about
- 7:42Speaker 1: this before, but I don't think many people would know
- 7:45Speaker 1: the challenges around being an umpire. When I first heard,
- 7:49Speaker 1: absolutely blew my mind. So we all know the draw,
- 7:53Speaker 1: players all know the draw, They know exactly where they
- 7:56Speaker 1: are for the entire season. Every single week. The umpires
- 8:00Speaker 1: find out on the Monday. Oh seriously, that's been that's
- 8:06Speaker 1: been a real challenge for you. Did it take you?
- 8:08Speaker 1: I mean, particularly if you've got a flight.
- 8:09Speaker 2: To perc Part logic of that is that well.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Exactly, well, I mean it's to do with performance. So
- 8:16Speaker 3: basically they they'll allocate the first few weeks, get everyone,
- 8:22Speaker 3: get everyone on, and then after that it's really dependent
- 8:26Speaker 3: on you know, how the teams are placed, what those
- 8:31Speaker 3: team matchups are, who's umpired with, who, where are the games?
- 8:35Speaker 3: Are they people that aren't available because obviously, you know,
- 8:38Speaker 3: we do sometimes sometimes not available on the weekends. And
- 8:44Speaker 3: then certainly you know that gets kind of more serious
- 8:46Speaker 3: as the season goes on, you kind of, you know,
- 8:49Speaker 3: working out who your top umpires are and which games
- 8:52Speaker 3: they should be on to set it up for the
- 8:56Speaker 3: end of the season. So that's why they purposely don't
- 9:00Speaker 3: kind of allocate too far in advance.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Because so for you, for instance, like one of the
- 9:05Speaker 1: best or if not the best, do you kind of
- 9:08Speaker 1: have a little idea of where you may be just
- 9:11Speaker 1: by looking at the ladder and how it's playing out?
- 9:13Speaker 1: Can you kind of work out where you're going to
- 9:15Speaker 1: end up?
- 9:16Speaker 3: Yes? And yes and no. It's a bit of a
- 9:19Speaker 3: trap to fall into. For me, I can't If I
- 9:23Speaker 3: worry too much about that, then you know, I won't
- 9:27Speaker 3: be focused on the actual job, which is just getting
- 9:29Speaker 3: out and doing it. You know, I'm playing a good
- 9:31Speaker 3: game for everybody. So you've got to try not to
- 9:34Speaker 3: think about that.
- 9:35Speaker 5: Yeah, I can imagine, right if you're trying to sort
- 9:37Speaker 5: of pick where you're going to be, you're going to
- 9:39Speaker 5: do your job.
- 9:40Speaker 3: So I ask you about the internationals.
- 9:43Speaker 5: Yeah, obviously you've been to a couple of World Cups
- 9:45Speaker 5: and a couple of Commonwealth Games, and we're talking after
- 9:47Speaker 5: the Constellation Cup series about whether we need to actually
- 9:50Speaker 5: move to all umpires are neutral and you just pick
- 9:53Speaker 5: the best two umpires regardless of where they're from. For you,
- 9:58Speaker 5: with the current rules, if Australia, who are going to
- 10:00Speaker 5: keep making World Cup finals, you never get to umpire
- 10:03Speaker 5: a World Cup final. Is that something that never Yeah,
- 10:06Speaker 5: so does that make you feel sad? Or do you
- 10:08Speaker 5: do you hang up your whistle and go that's one
- 10:10Speaker 5: thing that's missing from my CV.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Oh, you know, that would have been amazing and given
- 10:16Speaker 3: given that you know, Sharon Kelly and I did two
- 10:20Speaker 3: bronze medal games together. Maybe you don't assume, but you know,
- 10:26Speaker 3: I think we could fairly safely say that. You know,
- 10:29Speaker 3: we probably were the top two umpires at those events.
- 10:33Speaker 3: You can had that not been you know, a rule
- 10:40Speaker 3: that would have been us on the you know, on
- 10:42Speaker 3: the It's just it was always that way the whole time.
- 10:48Speaker 3: So you know, you never went in with that expectation.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Do you think that should change? That's okay, you can say,
- 10:56Speaker 3: Look I did. I purposely listened to the episode about
- 11:02Speaker 3: that conversation yesterday just in case came up. Thank you,
- 11:08Speaker 3: You're welcome. I completely agree with basically everything is there
- 11:11Speaker 3: around the fact that no one's going none, No umpire
- 11:15Speaker 3: at that level is going out there for any other
- 11:17Speaker 3: agenda other than to be professional and do the best
- 11:20Speaker 3: job that they can. And when you go to those
- 11:24Speaker 3: you know, comm work games and World Cup events, there
- 11:27Speaker 3: is an international panel of allocators and coaches that are
- 11:32Speaker 3: allocated to that event from all different countries, and they
- 11:36Speaker 3: are still putting everyone in a ranking and coming to
- 11:39Speaker 3: an agreement about which are the two best umpires to
- 11:42Speaker 3: put on that game. And I don't think that process
- 11:46Speaker 3: wouldn't change at all if it was just we're just
- 11:49Speaker 3: going to pick the best two umpires, because they're basically
- 11:51Speaker 3: doing that anyway. It's just that it depends now on
- 11:55Speaker 3: which teams they are. That order has to change somewhat
- 11:59Speaker 3: to fit that, to fit that ruling. Does that make sense?
- 12:04Speaker 2: I want to say, yeah, we might be quite so political,
- 12:10Speaker 2: but yeah, I think that's it's a real shame. Do
- 12:12Speaker 2: you think the game is getting more agro on court?
- 12:16Speaker 3: No, I mean I think so. I just think everything is.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Everything is just a huge percentage amped up. It's loud,
- 12:26Speaker 3: it's fast, All the games are on TV. You can
- 12:29Speaker 3: watch them in slow mo. You can you know, you
- 12:32Speaker 3: can go back, you can watch highlights, you can do
- 12:35Speaker 3: you know, you can do all that. Well, we didn't
- 12:37Speaker 3: have that before. You know, there's halftime is a whole
- 12:41Speaker 3: quarter of time. Now there's fifteen minutes there. Everything's longer
- 12:45Speaker 3: and faster and no, I don't. I mean, I don't
- 12:49Speaker 3: think so, I don't think. Agro is not a word
- 12:51Speaker 3: I would use. I think there's more. I don't know.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Maybe there's more on the line. There's a lot because
- 12:57Speaker 3: there's more attention.
- 12:58Speaker 1: So you just talked about the TV stuff then, and
- 13:00Speaker 1: how much review of a game would you do before
- 13:03Speaker 1: you then moved on? Do you always do a review
- 13:05Speaker 1: after a game or do you have someone talk to
- 13:07Speaker 1: you about your performance?
- 13:09Speaker 3: Always review? But I sort of I had to set
- 13:14Speaker 3: myself some rules around that kind of part way through
- 13:18Speaker 3: my umpiring career because I was getting a way too
- 13:21Speaker 3: caught up in the over analyzing and blaming myself for
- 13:26Speaker 3: stuff and you know, sticking dwelling on decisions and that
- 13:30Speaker 3: kind of stuff. So I really had to set some
- 13:33Speaker 3: time frames and a process for myself that was healthy
- 13:36Speaker 3: for me so that I wasn't getting caught in that
- 13:39Speaker 3: bad thinking cycle. So I watch it once, I might
- 13:44Speaker 3: rewind back and watch some decisions again. The benefit of
- 13:48Speaker 3: the TV you do have the different angles and that
- 13:50Speaker 3: sort of stuff. Tbh. I sometimes fast saw the other
- 13:55Speaker 3: umpire and just watch myself to make it as fass
- 13:57Speaker 3: to do that as.
- 14:00Speaker 4: The game.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Just to make that process faster because you know, sometimes
- 14:06Speaker 3: it's Sunday and a Sunday night and got to work
- 14:09Speaker 3: on Monday, so the only time to watch do that
- 14:11Speaker 3: is like there's an hour on Sunday and I'm just
- 14:13Speaker 3: quickly going to get through it. Netball Australia, to their credit,
- 14:17Speaker 3: have this broad in this excellent performance analysis process the
- 14:21Speaker 3: last two seasons where they're actually throwing some money at
- 14:25Speaker 3: a performance analyst person who God love them, sits there
- 14:31Speaker 3: and codes all the decisions in the matches and spits
- 14:35Speaker 3: out this spreadsheet so you can actually go and like
- 14:39Speaker 3: click on a link and pinpoint at a particular moment
- 14:42Speaker 3: in the game when that decision was. So if you're
- 14:44Speaker 3: really time for you can actually kind of just go
- 14:47Speaker 3: through and pick out. You might just go, I'm just
- 14:49Speaker 3: going to watch all of my off side calls and
- 14:52Speaker 3: see if they are right and just go through and
- 14:54Speaker 3: do that really quickly. So full credit to Netball Australia
- 14:59Speaker 3: for a doing that program and keeping it. That speeds
- 15:03Speaker 3: up that whole process so it can actually be really
- 15:06Speaker 3: effective depending on how you use it.
- 15:09Speaker 1: That's so cool.
- 15:10Speaker 2: So I'm a comedian and I have a lot of
- 15:12Speaker 2: people who know how to do my job, But lots
- 15:16Speaker 2: more people know how to do your job. They're bloody
- 15:18Speaker 2: experts at your job, aren't they. So do you find
- 15:22Speaker 2: a lot of people just outside of the game environment
- 15:25Speaker 2: want to have a go at you or tell you
- 15:28Speaker 2: how wrong you were in certain decisions, or are people
- 15:31Speaker 2: kind of respectful?
- 15:32Speaker 3: Look, look, you're never gonna You're always going to have
- 15:34Speaker 3: the element of the crowd at the game. And that's
- 15:37Speaker 3: that's just part of going to any any sporting match
- 15:41Speaker 3: in the country, I feel, And that's okay. I purposely
- 15:46Speaker 3: don't follow anything on social media to do with my
- 15:50Speaker 3: with netball. I don't get the paper. Once again, I
- 15:56Speaker 3: sort of learned the hard way with those ones. It's
- 15:59Speaker 3: just better for me just not to engage in any
- 16:02Speaker 3: any of that. So I don't know. I don't know.
- 16:06Speaker 2: What's bailing you up at the shopping center saying I
- 16:09Speaker 2: was at that game. It tends to be shouting during
- 16:12Speaker 2: the game.
- 16:13Speaker 3: No, not not really, not really, Yeah, any more people
- 16:17Speaker 3: at the game.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Yeah, what's your take on? I think in a lot
- 16:21Speaker 1: of other sports, umpires are really protected species. You can't
- 16:24Speaker 1: talk about them, you can't address calls or anything. And
- 16:27Speaker 1: I don't think that happens a great deal in that
- 16:29Speaker 1: ball anyway. But what's your take on people having an
- 16:32Speaker 1: opinion on things? I mean, because we do it in commentary,
- 16:35Speaker 1: we try to do it in a nice way. We
- 16:38Speaker 1: would always put a hand up and say there's a
- 16:39Speaker 1: reason we're not umpires. It's a bloody hard job. But
- 16:42Speaker 1: maybe that was wrong. What's your take on that sort
- 16:45Speaker 1: of stuff.
- 16:48Speaker 3: I think, you know, if it's done respectfully. You know,
- 16:51Speaker 3: in a lot of cases, there really is. It really
- 16:53Speaker 3: is kind of a discussion point around some of these
- 16:56Speaker 3: things like that you that you do want to have
- 16:59Speaker 3: and let's face it, we're all humans and there are
- 17:02Speaker 3: going to be mistakes, and you know, I don't expect
- 17:07Speaker 3: that those things just I totally overlooked. And I think
- 17:13Speaker 3: with all of it, with you know, discussions with players, coaches, umpires, officials,
- 17:18Speaker 3: as long as it's done respectfully, I'm all. I'm all
- 17:21Speaker 3: for it. I think it just makes everything everything better.
- 17:26Speaker 3: It's when it's done in a US versus them, or
- 17:30Speaker 3: when people, you know, people are talking to you, not
- 17:32Speaker 3: like you're just not a human. Like that's where it
- 17:34Speaker 3: gets a bit gross for me. It's just like, oh,
- 17:36Speaker 3: come on, like, we can actually have a really healthy
- 17:39Speaker 3: discussion around this, and I'll talk to you about what
- 17:41Speaker 3: I think, and you talk to me about what you think,
- 17:43Speaker 3: and that's how you move the game forward. I think.
- 17:48Speaker 2: I was worried she was going to say, we don't
- 17:49Speaker 2: care what you say, Kas.
- 17:52Speaker 1: But a lot of a lot of players have said
- 17:54Speaker 1: that they actually mute us when they watch the games.
- 17:56Speaker 1: They don't want to. I was not fair enough too,
- 17:59Speaker 1: I'm pretty or I did that was an option. Okay,
- 18:04Speaker 1: turn it right down. Can I just ask a quick question?
- 18:07Speaker 1: So you're super fit?
- 18:09Speaker 2: So all of the players have their clubs telling, you know,
- 18:11Speaker 2: putting them through fitness regimes and the life. Do you,
- 18:14Speaker 2: as umpires have a particular fitness regime or is that
- 18:17Speaker 2: just on you to work out how you stay fit
- 18:20Speaker 2: enough for the game?
- 18:21Speaker 3: Basically, yeah, we sort of we had a few years ago,
- 18:26Speaker 3: more than a few years ago, we sort of tried
- 18:29Speaker 3: having a like a strength and conditioning person sort of
- 18:33Speaker 3: program for the group. But I didn't do it. I
- 18:39Speaker 3: didn't follow it. I think, you know, one or two
- 18:41Speaker 3: people might have. But at the end of the day,
- 18:44Speaker 3: everyone's so separate from each other. We don't live near
- 18:48Speaker 3: each other, we're across the country, we're all, you know,
- 18:52Speaker 3: working full time jobs. It's more about kind of fitting.
- 18:55Speaker 3: You've got to fit in the fitness work around your lifestyle,
- 19:00Speaker 3: and yeah, you've got to make it. You've got to
- 19:03Speaker 3: make it work for yourself. So it's your I feel
- 19:06Speaker 3: like it's your responsibility to make sure you're fit enough,
- 19:09Speaker 3: fitter than you need to be to umpire it that level,
- 19:13Speaker 3: and I just always stuck stuck to that.
- 19:17Speaker 2: So what would your fitness regime be during the season.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Pretty much the same as it always is. I'm a
- 19:24Speaker 3: bit of a As you mentioned at the start, I
- 19:27Speaker 3: don't work for lesbos anymore, but I but I did.
- 19:30Speaker 3: I taught group fitness for fifteen years, so I taught.
- 19:34Speaker 3: I taught programs that lent themselves. Specifically, basically to netball umpiring,
- 19:40Speaker 3: I would just add a bit of a bit of
- 19:42Speaker 3: running in there and a bit of court movement around
- 19:45Speaker 3: the court, and more recently, I do CrossFit and run
- 19:54Speaker 3: back it up.
- 19:55Speaker 1: You said you're retired because you're getting too old, So
- 19:57Speaker 1: that doesn't mean you go and do cross.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that's what I've replaced netball umpire with CrossFit competitions.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Very sensible.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Yeah, how did that come about?
- 20:10Speaker 3: I taught les mills for fifteen years and I did
- 20:14Speaker 3: that at a really high level, and then I got
- 20:17Speaker 3: really really sick of doing fitness for other people, and
- 20:21Speaker 3: I'd always wanted to try a CrossFit, so I went
- 20:25Speaker 3: and tried it, and kind of as soon as I
- 20:26Speaker 3: tried it, I was like, I don't want to teach
- 20:28Speaker 3: great fitness anymore. I just want to do this. So
- 20:31Speaker 3: that's what I do. Now.
- 20:32Speaker 2: This is a great day for me, Rachel, because I'm
- 20:35Speaker 2: a crossfitter and there our first CrossFit guess. Oh okay,
- 20:40Speaker 2: so yeah, that's fantastic. I will see you at a
- 20:43Speaker 2: competition sometimes.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Yes, yes, absolutely, I did one on the weekend. Oh
- 20:46Speaker 3: where was that Jarvis Bay? Oh okay, that was the
- 20:49Speaker 3: Bay Games? The Bay Games?
- 20:51Speaker 1: Yes, how did I see you on a kind of
- 20:54Speaker 1: a raft thing?
- 20:55Speaker 3: Oh my goodness? What was that? Yes? So there was.
- 20:59Speaker 3: There was stand up a boarding. That was the second event.
- 21:02Speaker 3: The first event was a swim run, which I've never
- 21:05Speaker 3: swum and run together, so that was interesting. I've also
- 21:09Speaker 3: never stand up paddle boarded. That event was a paddle
- 21:13Speaker 3: board and a partner carry so we were like, yeah,
- 21:16Speaker 3: it's a board out and around and then pick up
- 21:19Speaker 3: your partner and do your laps on the beach. It
- 21:21Speaker 3: was ridiculous, but it was fun fantastic.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Well, I could talk about CrossFit for hours, but we
- 21:32Speaker 2: have to put Rachel through the most grueling thing that
- 21:35Speaker 2: she will ever do in her netball or netball associated career.
- 21:39Speaker 1: CAAs.
- 21:40Speaker 2: So this is You're about to enter Coxy's hot Box, right, Okay, Yeah,
- 21:45Speaker 2: everyone who has gone in has willingly left. No one
- 21:49Speaker 2: has run screaming from Coxy's hot Box yet, but it is.
- 21:51Speaker 1: It's intense.
- 21:52Speaker 2: It's a lot of questions. They get asked. Their rapid
- 21:55Speaker 2: fire ish unless it's interesting, and then we slow down
- 21:57Speaker 2: the rapid fire and just got for a bit of
- 21:59Speaker 2: a chat.
- 21:59Speaker 3: So okay, ready, all right, I'm ready, all right, here
- 22:03Speaker 3: we go.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Welcome to Coxies hot Box. What's your coffee order?
- 22:06Speaker 3: Oat cappuccino summer or winter summer?
- 22:10Speaker 1: Your breakfast go to.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Boiled eggs on toast.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Funniest umpire on tour that you travel with.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Um current or past either either dber Den Farrelly Dev
- 22:25Speaker 3: Farrelly is a funny lady.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Love it okay, Tomato sauce in the fridge or the
- 22:30Speaker 1: cupboard cupboard. Favorite sport outside of a nepple. I'm assuming
- 22:33Speaker 1: that's CrossFit now is that cross CrossFit?
- 22:35Speaker 3: Yes?
- 22:36Speaker 1: Or favorite holiday destination?
- 22:38Speaker 3: Um, anywhere with beach and cocktails.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Apperol spritzers to apper or spritzers.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:45Speaker 1: What do you do on planes? What's your activity on planes?
- 22:50Speaker 3: Depends if I've got a good book that I'm engrossed
- 22:53Speaker 3: and i'll read, otherwise download a bit of whatever I'm
- 22:56Speaker 3: watching on Netflix and binge that or sometimes actually to sleep.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Well, my next question is what are you binging right now?
- 23:04Speaker 3: Season whatever we're up to of the Lincoln Lawyer. Finishing that?
- 23:08Speaker 3: Oh it's quite good, is it?
- 23:11Speaker 2: Because I've just watched one episode of it, So that's good.
- 23:13Speaker 1: I'll stay with it. Yeah, it's good to get on that. Yeah, okay,
- 23:16Speaker 1: do you have any ink? Are you tattooed at all? Oh?
- 23:19Speaker 3: Yes, it's you see Oh look at that?
- 23:22Speaker 4: Oh what is that?
- 23:24Speaker 3: That's my family? Yeah, it's a circle of flowers. But
- 23:27Speaker 3: it's my family circle because I worked, because I worked
- 23:30Speaker 3: in fitness for so many years, I'd always like I
- 23:34Speaker 3: couldn't wear my rings all the time. So it's my
- 23:37Speaker 3: husband and my daughter and my two dogs.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Oh, I've never noticed that on you. Is it new?
- 23:43Speaker 3: Oh, I've had it for I've had it for a
- 23:46Speaker 3: few years.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Then you pay more attention to umpires, Catherine, to my
- 23:51Speaker 1: favorite music genre.
- 23:54Speaker 3: Like too, like early two thousand's probably.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Okay, I'm so young. How do you have your steak cooked?
- 24:02Speaker 1: This is lizze Ellis's favorite question.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Oh, you're not going to like the answer. I don't
- 24:07Speaker 3: eat any meat. Sorry.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Oh okay, that's better than well done. That's a much
- 24:11Speaker 2: better answer.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Vegetarian is better than well done.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Sorry, I'm married your that's it. That's it.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Yeah, you passed the hot box? Are you a vegetarian?
- 24:26Speaker 3: Full vegetarian? I eat fish? I eat fish.
- 24:30Speaker 2: I have a question. This isn't obviously you're out of
- 24:32Speaker 2: Cox's hot box, But do lizen cats have anything they
- 24:35Speaker 2: need to apologize to you for?
- 24:39Speaker 3: Not? Really? No?
- 24:41Speaker 1: Really know though?
- 24:43Speaker 3: Is it? It's a.
- 24:45Speaker 5: I did think you know when you said when you
- 24:47Speaker 5: were trying to Catherine was trying to guess who our
- 24:49Speaker 5: guest was, and you said, if we were in a
- 24:51Speaker 5: bar and we offered our guests.
- 24:53Speaker 3: To buy them a drink, I do think we probably
- 24:55Speaker 3: are more than one drink. I don't think. I don't think.
- 25:00Speaker 3: I don't know if I umpired you, Liz. When I
- 25:05Speaker 3: first started, I started on CBT and then did all
- 25:10Speaker 3: of A and Z. But when I first started, I
- 25:14Speaker 3: pretty much just did permanently Datas and Kestrels for a
- 25:20Speaker 3: few seasons. So I don't think. I probably I wasn't
- 25:23Speaker 3: certainly wasn't Swiss.
- 25:28Speaker 5: But do you know, like Catherine and I often talk
- 25:30Speaker 5: on this podcast about getting up to Shenanigans, do the
- 25:32Speaker 5: umpires get up to Shenanigans?
- 25:33Speaker 3: Anything?
- 25:34Speaker 1: You great questions?
- 25:36Speaker 3: Yeah, you know we have. We like if you go on,
- 25:39Speaker 3: if you go over, you know, to New Zealand or
- 25:42Speaker 3: wherever for a test series. You know, there's like a
- 25:46Speaker 3: game and then a few days and then another game
- 25:48Speaker 3: and then a few days in another game, like you
- 25:50Speaker 3: got days days to fill in. We went to New
- 25:53Speaker 3: Zealand years years ago. It was me drummer Chris Campbell
- 25:59Speaker 3: from Jamaica. Me Chris Campbell. I love Chris Campbell. Two
- 26:05Speaker 3: Janice Janice Treasure, who is this little little woman with
- 26:09Speaker 3: like purple hair. And then Allison Cormack who's from the
- 26:13Speaker 3: like the far south of New Zealand where they've got
- 26:16Speaker 3: that like almost Irish accent. It's like it's like a
- 26:20Speaker 3: joke like for you know, into a bar, walk into
- 26:26Speaker 3: a bar. Yeah. So to fill in time one day,
- 26:31Speaker 3: wherever we were in some random like Palmerston North or
- 26:34Speaker 3: somewhere super Ship in New Zealand like that.
- 26:38Speaker 2: You know, my grandparents used to live there.
- 26:40Speaker 1: It was super Ship.
- 26:41Speaker 3: Then it's really it's a really ship place like.
- 26:47Speaker 2: But it's a big All Blacks training center now, isn't it.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Like yeah, yeah, to make it more interesting, carry on,
- 26:58Speaker 3: New Zealand listeners, please just don't send us. Sorry, sorry
- 27:02Speaker 3: New Zealand. I remember New Zealand. I think Parmesan Lors
- 27:07Speaker 3: is a bit ship.
- 27:08Speaker 4: They do.
- 27:08Speaker 2: It's their national joke.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, so look I don't even know to me pair,
- 27:14Speaker 3: I don't know if it was Parmesan North, but I
- 27:16Speaker 3: definitely went there and it was It really was crap,
- 27:18Speaker 3: but it was somewhere like that. So to fill in
- 27:21Speaker 3: the day, we go to the local swimming pool to
- 27:25Speaker 3: go on the water side. Waters get their water slides
- 27:29Speaker 3: open for like one hour a day, so we hung
- 27:33Speaker 3: out hang out of the pool all day for the
- 27:36Speaker 3: for the water slide to open. And there's two, there's
- 27:39Speaker 3: two water slides that like go down at the same
- 27:42Speaker 3: down at the same time. So we entertained ourselves for
- 27:44Speaker 3: the full hour that the water sides were open, racing
- 27:47Speaker 3: Chris Campbell, all of us versus Chris Campbell to see
- 27:50Speaker 3: if we could beat beat him to the bottom, which
- 27:55Speaker 3: powerweight ratio was never going to happen.
- 27:57Speaker 2: But that's okay, so tiny open an hour a day,
- 28:00Speaker 2: you're elbowing kids out of the way. It's like, I'm
- 28:02Speaker 2: an umpire, get out of my way, kids.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Basically, Yeah, I do have a photo from that though.
- 28:07Speaker 1: It's funny your Shenanigan's are fairly tame compared to ours.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Then that, yeah, and then they went they drinking. I
- 28:15Speaker 1: do have a question though that you don't have to
- 28:18Speaker 1: name names, but if you want to throw initials out there,
- 28:22Speaker 1: who is the biggest turd of a player or one
- 28:26Speaker 1: that you just always know is going to be give
- 28:29Speaker 1: you a challenge to umpire or has been across your careers.
- 28:39Speaker 2: See ci as if she's going to answer that.
- 28:45Speaker 1: But like if they're retired, you can always say, I
- 28:48Speaker 1: mean there's umpires. Yeah, it could be anyone, but there's
- 28:52Speaker 1: always players that you know, try and push that lize
- 28:54Speaker 1: boundaries and stuff like that.
- 28:56Speaker 3: You know, Oh, there's pretty like there's a few in
- 29:00Speaker 3: to international games that were pretty gross at those at
- 29:03Speaker 3: those common games. I think I nearly sent off what's
- 29:10Speaker 3: a name that was the coat was went and coached
- 29:13Speaker 3: in Perth. Sarah None, Yeah, the English the English girl
- 29:18Speaker 3: Sarah Bayman. Yes, yeah, I nearly sent yeah, nearly sent
- 29:21Speaker 3: her off in England England South Africa match.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Really it's another question then off off the back of that?
- 29:29Speaker 1: Has it got to be pretty die for you to
- 29:31Speaker 1: go yep, you're.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Off the court, honestly, And I did think about this yesterday.
- 29:36Speaker 3: The only person I ever have ever sent off was
- 29:41Speaker 3: a boy, a male that was playing in a high
- 29:44Speaker 3: school boys knockout netball game years and years ago. So
- 29:49Speaker 3: when my parents were like high school teachers and wrote
- 29:52Speaker 3: me into umpire the boys' school knockout down at the
- 29:57Speaker 3: courts at Sutherland, and I sent him off because he
- 30:01Speaker 3: swore for I don't know the third or fourth time
- 30:04Speaker 3: or something. It was just he was pretty gross.
- 30:06Speaker 1: At you or what was happening in the game.
- 30:08Speaker 3: Yeah, at me, he was pretty pretty He was pretty crap.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Okay, fair enough.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Yeah, So when someone gets sent off, how long are
- 30:16Speaker 2: they off for? Is this the two minutes different?
- 30:19Speaker 3: It's just it's just changed. So now it's the two minutes.
- 30:25Speaker 3: There's a two minute suspension. There's also the ordering off
- 30:29Speaker 3: still there, but that didn't used to be there. It
- 30:30Speaker 3: used to just be a a send off type situation.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Isn't there a four minute one now as well? Did
- 30:37Speaker 1: I say there's a or there's a there's one way.
- 30:43Speaker 1: I thought there was one way there was two minutes
- 30:45Speaker 1: and you could come back on, or there was another
- 30:46Speaker 1: suspension where you couldn't come back on, But it's not
- 30:50Speaker 1: so like yellow card, red card. Yeah, anyway, I don't know.
- 30:53Speaker 3: I mean you would know the suspension and ordering off
- 30:55Speaker 3: there they're they're the options. The suspension is two minutes.
- 30:58Speaker 3: The ordering off is the order So I think what
- 31:00Speaker 3: you're thinking of the ordering off, which is so it
- 31:03Speaker 3: used to be once you're if a player was ordered off,
- 31:05Speaker 3: there was no replacement, but now after four minutes or
- 31:10Speaker 3: ordered off, you can't come back, but you can be replaced.
- 31:14Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, yeah, interesting, there you go.
- 31:19Speaker 2: I might get you to come and explain the rules
- 31:20Speaker 2: to me sometimes. Please anytime, Thank you a lot I'll
- 31:26Speaker 2: take you for a workout and then you can explain
- 31:28Speaker 2: the buddy game.
- 31:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Great under Eleven's coach over an UPO. Nice double, that'll
- 31:33Speaker 2: be after it.
- 31:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Yeah, You've done an amazing career in a really bloody
- 31:38Speaker 2: hard job that is incredibly important to our game. So
- 31:42Speaker 2: thank you so much. Thank you for your service, and
- 31:45Speaker 2: thank you for your No Dribble Summer series service today
- 31:47Speaker 2: and you've done particularly well in Cox's hot box.
- 31:50Speaker 4: You have.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Thank you Rach for joining us. Congratulations again on what's
- 31:55Speaker 1: been an incredible career. Have some downtime, give the CrossFit, arrest,
- 32:00Speaker 1: body recover, Nah, enjoy enjoy the time off though because
- 32:06Speaker 1: it's it certainly is a challenge when you think about
- 32:08Speaker 1: what the umpires have to go through. So I hope
- 32:10Speaker 1: you enjoy some weekends at home with the fam.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Thank you? Can I can I tell you my favorite
- 32:15Speaker 3: story about you Oka?
- 32:17Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 32:18Speaker 2: Thank god?
- 32:19Speaker 5: We don't.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Do you want to step out for this cat and
- 32:26Speaker 2: you can hear it when the episode goes where.
- 32:30Speaker 3: It's so the listeners might not be aware. When we
- 32:36Speaker 3: go to check nails before the before the game at
- 32:41Speaker 3: sun Corp, we actually go into the we go into
- 32:44Speaker 3: the change rooms. Now, we didn't used to do that,
- 32:46Speaker 3: but we do now anyway. So when we went into
- 32:51Speaker 3: the the change rooms at in Perth at the old
- 32:57Speaker 3: Challenge Stadium one time, I can't remember who was with me,
- 33:00Speaker 3: who my co umpire was, but I distinctly recall going
- 33:03Speaker 3: in and talking to you guys, and as it always
- 33:06Speaker 3: always always happens, someone is always in the toilet, at
- 33:10Speaker 3: least one person is in the toilet when we go
- 33:14Speaker 3: into the change rooms, and you happen to tell us
- 33:17Speaker 3: on this particular occasion that there were two toilets in
- 33:21Speaker 3: the Perth change room. One was the Pooh toilet. One
- 33:31Speaker 3: was designated the Pooh toilet. The other was not the
- 33:33Speaker 3: poo toilet. So if anyone comes out of the Pooh toilet,
- 33:36Speaker 3: you know exactly what's happened in there.
- 33:38Speaker 1: See and make sure that their hands are washed before
- 33:40Speaker 1: you do. That's all right, it's a community service. I
- 33:43Speaker 1: feel like that was nice.
- 33:45Speaker 2: I think that's very sensible.
- 33:46Speaker 1: By the way. Yeah, yeah, oh god, that could have
- 33:49Speaker 1: been so much we.
- 33:52Speaker 3: I know, love it.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Well, thank you again.
- 33:57Speaker 2: That has been the No Dribbles summer series where we
- 33:59Speaker 2: have been talking to a legend of the whistle, Rachel Air,
- 34:02Speaker 2: thank you for joining us. And yeah, I'm Caroline Swindell.
- 34:05Speaker 1: I'm Capcox, I'm lose Ellis.
- 34:08Speaker 2: That's Rachel Air and this has been no dribble.
- 34:10Speaker 3: Bye everyone, have a great week, do you.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Bye bye
