- 0:01Our number 2 welcome back, Millery Condon, the Iowa Sports
- 0:05Radio Network, the Moines Sports Station, 106.3 KX and oh,
- 0:09wherever you're listening in the state of Iowa or in the iheart
- 0:11app. Grateful that you are.
- 0:13We'll take you until the top of the hour and then turns off and
- 0:16turn things over off the bench. Sean and Lucas too, until 5:00.
- 0:20Let's talk some baseball, By the way, bottom of the hour, Sam
- 0:24Burnaby, who announced his retirement, the four decade at
- 0:28the helm of the Iowa Cubs as their general manager, announced
- 0:31he's stepping aside. We'll talk to Sam at the bottom
- 0:34of the hour. But right now, you know what the
- 0:35music means. Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com, He
- 0:38joins us to talk about baseball's final week of the
- 0:41regular season. And Matt, there's still a lot to
- 0:43be played for. There really is wild cards up in
- 0:46the air, number one seed in the American League.
- 0:49There's still a lot to be determined.
- 0:51It's going to be a fun week, is it not?
- 0:54It it's funny that even back around Labor Day, it looked like
- 0:58man, we might not really have that many good races and even
- 1:02the Dodgers only lead the Potters by 2 1/2 games.
- 1:05Like, and you have to look obviously we'll talk about the,
- 1:09I assume the wild card race with the Mets and the Reds being tied
- 1:13and the Reds having the tiebreaker there.
- 1:15So like the Mets, Mets do not control their own destiny for a
- 1:18playoff spot for the first time probably since the first week of
- 1:22the season. I would have to check on wild
- 1:23card spots then, but that doesn't even matter then.
- 1:26But like the AL Central is the one that's blowing me away.
- 1:31The Tigers with a 14 game lead down to 1.
- 1:34The Guardians lead the season series.
- 1:36So if the Guardians win the series in Cleveland starting
- 1:40tonight they will have tiebreaker there.
- 1:43It would be the biggest collapse in baseball history.
- 1:47The the biggest one was 13 games, which was the 1951
- 1:52Dodgers. If you remember, that was the
- 1:54Bobby Thompson shot her. Wow.
- 1:56OK, yeah, the Giants win the Pennant.
- 1:59That was 13 games. Wow, that was 13.
- 2:02This is 14. And and the Guardians, by the
- 2:06way, we're back for 15 1/2. Back when it was 14, sorry,
- 2:10Trent. When it was a 14 game lead, it
- 2:12was 20 in second place. So this is incredible that the
- 2:19Mets are fighting for their playoff lives after having the
- 2:21best record in baseball in the middle of June.
- 2:24The Tigers are fighting for their playoff lives after having
- 2:26a 14 game lead in early July. The Dodgers are only at 2 1/2
- 2:31games after everybody thought why even play this season?
- 2:33They're too good, right? It's pretty awesome.
- 2:38The question. I have again, and we've had this
- 2:41conversation for the better part of, I don't know, 6-7 years now.
- 2:44Matt, how, how does Cleveland do this?
- 2:47They were dead a half dozen times this year selling pieces
- 2:51off. There's no shot.
- 2:53And here they are again. How does this organization do it
- 2:56year after year after year and doing it on just a tight, tight
- 3:00budget? It's just it's an incredibly
- 3:02well run organization. They're pitching operations are
- 3:06off the charts good. I mean, you look at it just
- 3:08right now, they bring up Parker Messick who's made six starts
- 3:12and he's 3 and O with a 2 point O 8 ERA.
- 3:15They bring him up like out of necessity for down the stretch
- 3:18and then he's amazing. They're pitching operations are
- 3:21as good as anybody in baseball. They have a few guys who can
- 3:24steal bases. They have Jose Ramirez on a very
- 3:27club friendly contract. That helps a lot and and I think
- 3:32right now, once they started winning, you get that feeling
- 3:37of, you know, it doesn't matter. Nobody thinks we're supposed to
- 3:41be here. We shouldn't even be here.
- 3:43So they have no pressure at all. Meanwhile, the Tigers are the
- 3:47ones sweating it out. We can't blow this 14 game.
- 3:50We we can't do this, we can't blow this.
- 3:52And I think that the vibes are totally on the guardian side
- 3:56right now. I mean, the vibes have to be
- 3:58wretched in the Tigers close house and I'm sure that they're
- 4:02saying all the right things to everybody else.
- 4:04Hey, we still have a one game lead.
- 4:06We've got Google Tuesday and Sunday, which is true, by the
- 4:09way. And Google threw really well
- 4:12against the Guardians last week and they still lost 3 to 1.
- 4:15So yeah, I I think deep in their heart of hearts, the Tigers are
- 4:19probably terrified that they're blowing this.
- 4:21They just wouldn't admit it publicly.
- 4:22Them and the Mets both going down in flames, which is
- 4:25unbelievable. Remember last year?
- 4:26This time last year we were talking about how hot this
- 4:28Tigers team is and what a finish to their season.
- 4:31Oh, my God, they're going to make the what a difference a
- 4:33year's make a year makes. No, no doubt about that.
- 4:36Well, so Cincinnati has the tiebreaker above with both the
- 4:41Diamondbacks and the Mets, correct.
- 4:43And of those two, you know, the Diamondbacks get the Dodgers and
- 4:48then I'm not sure they finish up with maybe the Padres, but and
- 4:52then but and Cincinnati and they have a relatively easy pathway
- 4:57plus the tiebreaker. It looks as though they're in
- 4:59the driver's seat, Matt. You would think so, yeah.
- 5:02I mean, they've got the Pirates at home.
- 5:04I would say don't mess around and just go sweep them.
- 5:07Obviously, easier said than done.
- 5:08And then they finished at Milwaukee.
- 5:10Now the Brewers. They should have clinched the
- 5:12one seed by then though, right? Yeah, they will have clinched
- 5:15the one seed. Now they'll have days off before
- 5:17the NLDS, so they'll still want to.
- 5:19That's a good point. They'll.
- 5:20Still want to play their guys, but it just feels like it's more
- 5:24spring training, you know when them necessarily have to win.
- 5:28You're just making sure that you're still in shape and you're
- 5:30getting ready for the post season and they're not going to
- 5:33overextend any arms if it goes to extras or not.
- 5:36I mean, they're not running any guys into the ground here.
- 5:38So you're looking at starting pitchers getting in their work
- 5:40and getting out of there, especially with the Woodruff
- 5:43injury right now and how they're trying to protect Mesorowski.
- 5:46Plus he hasn't even been that good recently.
- 5:49They pushed back Freddy Peralta. I I just don't know how hard the
- 5:54Brewers are going to play even if they're playing all their
- 5:56guys in that series. Meanwhile, the Mets go to
- 5:59Wrigley becomes are only up 2 1/2 over the Padres for home
- 6:03field in the wild card, so they need to win.
- 6:05Plus, you would think after losing all four in Cincinnati,
- 6:09they would have a general feeling of we need to get
- 6:11ourselves right before the playoffs.
- 6:14Then the Mets have to go to Miami, and I'm sure the Marlins
- 6:16would love nothing more than to play spoiler.
- 6:18Plus, they've won 10:50 and they're technically still alive,
- 6:23so I it it feels like everything swinging toward the Reds right
- 6:28now. It really does.
- 6:29It really does. And the Mets payroll, I mean, my
- 6:31God, for them to miss with that payroll, Yeah.
- 6:33God, I want to go back to the Brewers.
- 6:35And you mentioned Miss Oroski, who's been certainly a
- 6:38disappointment here, ERA approaching 5 over the last
- 6:40month. How does the playoff rotation
- 6:42shape up? They get a set it up in whatever
- 6:45order that they want, one through 4.
- 6:47I'm going to guess Mesorowski, Peralta, Priest or Woodruff or
- 6:50the five. But what order do you put those
- 6:53guys in? Well, Peralta's your one no
- 6:55matter what, no questions asked. That's your Easter.
- 6:59After that, if if Woodruff's OK and he can get back on the
- 7:04mound, I think he's your two. But that's the issue is he just
- 7:08went through an injury. And remember, he missed all your
- 7:10last year with the shoulder surgery and shoulders are
- 7:12tricking. They said it's not in his
- 7:13shoulder. So maybe he'll be OK if he's
- 7:16good to go. He's my #2 there.
- 7:18But I think Priester's got to be involved in the mix.
- 7:22And who would have thought that several weeks ago.
- 7:25But yeah, I think Priester might well be there too.
- 7:28And then let's see how healthy you can get Woodruff to be your
- 7:31#3 after Peralta. I do, I will say this, they're
- 7:36very good at figuring things out.
- 7:38And they have, you know, they got 5 great starts at a Logan
- 7:42Henderson. Chad Patrick, who's a rookie for
- 7:45the most part, has been pretty good this season.
- 7:47They brought his Rouse game. He was great at first.
- 7:50I trust that that front office and they're just like the
- 7:53Guardian. They're pitching operations are
- 7:55unbelievable. I think that they'll do a good
- 7:58job of figuring out. It's just a matter of the
- 8:00players going out and taking care of business, which frankly,
- 8:02it was Devin Williams who did not do it last year.
- 8:04They had that series in the Wild Card series going to the 9th and
- 8:08and Williams coughed it up that the front office will put them
- 8:12in position. Yeah, I expect the front office
- 8:14will put them in position. We'll just see if they have
- 8:17Alonzo happen to them again all. Right.
- 8:19I put it off long enough because I, I'm a little bit worried
- 8:23here. Toronto's up two.
- 8:26They've got the, you think they've got the what?
- 8:29They've got the tiebreaker. But here's the thing.
- 8:31They play the Red Sox, who still have tons to play for.
- 8:34Then they play Tampa, who like Miami, would like to what's
- 8:38would love to do to the Mets. They love to play spoiler.
- 8:41And the Yankees got the White Sox for three and then another.
- 8:45And the Royals and the Oilers. I mean, the Orioles might like
- 8:48to play spoiler, but I feel like Toronto will ultimately win it.
- 8:53But I wish they could have done better in Kansas, yeah.
- 8:56Two games and the tiebreakers like having a three-game lead
- 8:59with six to go. And the the key is I I can see
- 9:02why. I mean they were outscored.
- 9:04Was it 28 to 3 and that four-game losing streak that was
- 9:07really, really bad, but it bounced back in one Sunday and
- 9:10now they're at home and they're 50 and 25 at home.
- 9:14So even if you think these teams aren't going to roll over for
- 9:18you right now, the Red Sox are hardly playing inspired
- 9:21baseball, even though they need these games to get in the
- 9:23playoffs and the Rays aren't great.
- 9:26So I think if the Blue Jays just go out and play like they can at
- 9:29home, all they really have to do is go three and three.
- 9:33And even if the Yankees go 6 and O, well, no, three and three
- 9:36Yankees go 6 and O Yankees would win it.
- 9:39All I have to do is really go three and three and hope the
- 9:41Yankees only go 5:00 and 1:00 and then you win the tiebreaker.
- 9:44And honestly, four and two is probably more realistic.
- 9:47I think the Jays are going to get it done at home this week.
- 9:51So I can understand why you're worried, especially because of
- 9:55that four-game losing streak. They just looked so, so, so
- 9:57packed. 20 to 1 is demoralizing for anybody.
- 10:02That was nice. They're they're still in the
- 10:05driver's seat here. They again 50 and 25 at home and
- 10:09they've got 6 home games. We know the Yankees can mash,
- 10:12and Aaron Judge is being held out by Trent Grisser, who's been
- 10:15incredibly hot the last month here.
- 10:18But after the rotation, that bullpen guys that you think are
- 10:21going to be good. Luke Weaver, who was so good a
- 10:23year ago, he's been awful. Mark Leiter, since he's come
- 10:26over, he's been bad. Devin Williams has been bad in
- 10:28the back end of the bullpen. It's crazy to say, but are the
- 10:32Yankees built to be a good playoff team?
- 10:35They still have enough talent that things could click into
- 10:38place. I mean, relievers are so
- 10:40volatile. I mean, I love their trade
- 10:43deadline, how they went out and they got Bert, who was awful,
- 10:46and then they demoted him to the minors.
- 10:48And Bednar Duvall. Like you just thought between
- 10:52Williams, Weaver, Bednar, Duvall, like they're going to
- 10:55get things figured out here at the back end, it doesn't seem
- 11:00like they will. But you still have a lot of
- 11:02talent there. I don't think you can trust
- 11:03Williams anymore, but I would give Duvall a few shots this
- 11:06week. Bednar's probably fine.
- 11:08Weaver. We've seen what he can do
- 11:10before. He'll probably get things worked
- 11:12out and you never know. I mean, I know that like the
- 11:142023 Diamondbacks had one of the worst Bolton's in baseball
- 11:17through like August and then they got things slowly figured
- 11:21out through September and then they rode that all the way to
- 11:24the World Series. And they're Bolton was actually
- 11:26pretty good until the Rangers knocked him around a few times.
- 11:29But things can always click into place for just a few games in
- 11:32the postseason and sometimes that's all you need.
- 11:35So I do think that they have enough talent to get it right
- 11:38and they have plenty of power. They have the rotation arms
- 11:41here. If you look at Fried and Rodon,
- 11:44especially in Schlidler, though, for the most part, the way that
- 11:48he is thrown and healed, that he's back, like I do think the
- 11:52Yankees can figure out now, they could get bounced in the Wild
- 11:55Corral and I would not be surprised.
- 11:56But I also wouldn't be surprised if they won the American League.
- 11:59A lot of error there. Doing a little breaking news,
- 12:02boys in baseball. In the last 20 minutes, Major
- 12:04League Baseball has announced it will use the automated Ball
- 12:07Strike Challenge system starting in 2026.
- 12:11Each team gets 2 challenges can keep them if successful.
- 12:13The challenges can only come from the pitcher, the catcher,
- 12:16the batter. It must obviously come right
- 12:18after the pitch. No help from the dugout.
- 12:21If it does go to extra innings, each team will be awarded 1, not
- 12:25assuming they don't have any challenges left.
- 12:27So automated balls and strikes and some respects coming to MLB
- 12:31next year. Your thoughts?
- 12:32Matt Postons. I really like it, really, really
- 12:35like it. I hope that if there are any
- 12:37people who don't that they watch the All Star game and they saw
- 12:40how seamlessly they can get it, they can fix a call that could
- 12:43be a big game changing call. I mean, it happened in the night
- 12:47and we ended up going to extras, which was a swing off in the All
- 12:49Star game, but that's another story.
- 12:52Yeah, I really like it and in fact I have a prediction.
- 12:55There's going to be a game changing missed call this
- 12:58postseason and we're all going to say maybe we needed the APS.
- 13:03No doubt. That's awesome.
- 13:05Well, I'm glad it's here. I am.
- 13:06I saw Corbin Carroll went 3030 and it led me back to looking at
- 13:11Picro Armstrong. He still needs another home run
- 13:14to get to the 3030 club. Yeah, he's been at 29 and we've
- 13:17known how the back half of the year has gone.
- 13:19Is he going to get there? It just where are you right now
- 13:21as a Cubs fan leading into the playoffs, knowing they're
- 13:24basically locked where they're going to be?
- 13:26Yeah, I think he's he's actually had a lot of good swings the
- 13:30past week or so. So, you know, six games left at
- 13:34home, I think he'll get there. I know we're talking 4040 at the
- 13:37All Star break. Maybe I got a little blinded by
- 13:40how great he looked in the first half and it's kind of pumped the
- 13:43great breaks because we've talked about this before.
- 13:45Remember, I think it was heading into this season when you guys
- 13:48said what's a ceiling? And I was like 1520 homers a
- 13:51year. He was like 26 at the All Star
- 13:55break. So of course he was going to
- 13:56come back a little bit and he had a really, really bad bump.
- 14:00But overall, if you just look at where the numbers are right now
- 14:03compared to what the expectations were heading into
- 14:06the year, he's exceeded expectations this season.
- 14:08And and again, I do think that he started to look like his
- 14:13first half self there in Pittsburgh for a quick second.
- 14:16He hit some balls hard in Cincinnati that did not end up
- 14:20becoming hit. Especially I don't know if you
- 14:22saw the the Thursday game where Hunter Green had a no hitter
- 14:25going and hit the one up by a Sarah helmet at first base that
- 14:28didn't end up being a hit because by the time Biasteros
- 14:31got his bearings. He was on a.
- 14:34Second, Yep, and he had hit a line shot right at the right
- 14:36fielder earlier in the game. Did Pete Crow Armstrong and then
- 14:39he went 2 for four the next night.
- 14:40So I I think that there are enough good signs lately that
- 14:45you can't really put him in in a middle order spot anymore.
- 14:49But where where council has been hitting him 678.
- 14:53I think that's a really good, productive offensive player for
- 14:56the playoffs. A couple more things, Matt,
- 14:58we'll let you go. So since we're talking Cubs, I
- 15:01do want to get your Cal Raleigh update.
- 15:03You know, Aaron Judge, if it is, is it going to be close?
- 15:06But just Kyle Hendricks, it's not official yet, but boy, it
- 15:10sure seems like it's going to be made here any day.
- 15:12I'm not sure when his last start is, maybe tomorrow.
- 15:15But obviously what it what an integral part of the Cubs, one
- 15:19of those guys that just seemingly overachieved, right?
- 15:22He was, I know when he he first came, he was drafted like way
- 15:25back in the draft. He went back to school, then
- 15:28came out again. He was drafted by the Rangers.
- 15:30He came in the Ryan Dempster trade.
- 15:32That's how we got to the Cubs. But what?
- 15:34What a piece of that 2016 World Series team.
- 15:38Back in like 2013 and 2014, Theo Epstein was stockpiling all
- 15:42these position players and everybody's refrain, the
- 15:45naysayers was who's going to pitch?
- 15:47Well, they signed John Lester before 15.
- 15:49They signed Lackey before 16. But it was the acquisitions that
- 15:53were under the radar of Jake Arietta and Kyle Hendrick that
- 15:56really brought that rotation together.
- 15:58And I think you could argue that Hendrix pitch started the two
- 16:02biggest games in Cubs history, which was game six of the NLCS
- 16:05in 2016 where he out dueled. Clayton was unbelievable getting
- 16:1022 straight out. And then game seven of the World
- 16:13Series where he was really good through 4 2/3 innings and bad.
- 16:16Probably should not have told him yet, but to start those two
- 16:20games, he's left a mark on the Cubs that will be there forever.
- 16:25Again, you could argue the two biggest starts in Cubs history
- 16:29and he threw really, really well on both of them, especially Game
- 16:326. I mean, that was that was his
- 16:35masterpiece of his career. Ken mentioned it.
- 16:39Just took a look at the odds. This is from DraftKings How?
- 16:42Are they because what last time we looked he was like plus 480
- 16:45Cal Raleigh was. He was, yeah, Last week at this
- 16:47time when we had the conversation with Matt, that's
- 16:49what it was. Today, it's even even.
- 16:53Both are -115 are you kidding? To win the American League MVP
- 16:58in just a week later, what is he 4 off the American League record
- 17:01for homers now with 58? I just absolutely incredible
- 17:06here in the conversation we had last week.
- 17:07Just continues here, Matt Snyder.
- 17:10The divide in the rate stats is gigantic.
- 17:13Like Judge has them by 74 points of batting average, almost 200
- 17:17of OPS. But there's the element of
- 17:21playing catcher 120 * a season, it does such a number on your
- 17:27body and for Raleigh to be this much higher than any other catch
- 17:29has ever been, 48 was the record before this year to it.
- 17:33To break Mickey Mantle's record for a switch hitter is
- 17:37unbelievable. And to do it in T-Mobile,
- 17:39T-Mobile Park, which is the the most pitcher friendly park in
- 17:42baseball, at least the last three years, you've got to give
- 17:46a lot of bonus points for that. Honestly, I think I think it's
- 17:50kind of neck and neck for me right now.
- 17:53I would watch the home run totals.
- 17:54Yep, 60 doesn't hit a 50, which Judge has his 49th.
- 17:58I equated it to when you see like a 9999 price tag versus
- 18:03$100, it always makes you feel like it's a little bit cheaper.
- 18:06If Judge doesn't get to 50 and Raleigh gets to 60 and you see
- 18:0960 versus 49, that might well swing it in Raleigh's favor.
- 18:14Plus, let's say Raleigh goes absolutely crazy and gets the
- 18:1763. I don't believe this, but there
- 18:21will be a lot of people saying that's the real record now,
- 18:24right? Because the only people more
- 18:26than that are Bonds McGuire and those that might really swing it
- 18:31in his direction. So let's watch those Raleigh
- 18:33home run totals and that's what will really be interesting.
- 18:35That's fast does is there such a thing when it comes to baseball
- 18:39voting is because we hear it all the time and others East Coast
- 18:42bias is there such a thing? Maybe.
- 18:45So here's the thing. Every every BBWA chapter has
- 18:48exactly 2 votes per award. So there's only two Yankees
- 18:52Riders and two Mariners Riders on MVP.
- 18:55In theory, that should make it even.
- 18:57It's more like the Senate instead of the House of
- 18:58Representatives, right? The only thing is there are a
- 19:02lot more teams East and a lot of the people out east go to bed
- 19:06once their games are over, don't watch West Coast game.
- 19:10I also think in this day and age with the streaming, everybody
- 19:13watches everybody. I don't know.
- 19:15So I think you could argue that there is a little bit, but we do
- 19:18have some safeguards in play. I don't know, man, it's, it's
- 19:23tough to to really nail it down, but I do like that there's only
- 19:27two votes per chapter. So at least in theory, it should
- 19:30be a little balanced. It just like I said, I mean, and
- 19:32there's only four teams out West because, well, three actually,
- 19:36because both the Rangers and the Astros are in the AL West and
- 19:39they're in the central time zone.
- 19:40So you you really worry about how many people are actually
- 19:44watching all these Mariners games when they're late.
- 19:46But look, everybody can see the numbers.
- 19:49Everybody's knows what he's doing.
- 19:51So again, in theory there shouldn't be a problem there.
- 19:56Matt's not a great conversation, as always, brother.
- 19:58When we talk next Tuesday, it'll be opening day of postseason in
- 20:02MLB. Can't wait.
- 20:04Did a brother. Good stuff, Matt.
- 20:05Thank you. As always.
- 20:06We'll talk to you in a week. Thank you.
- 20:07All right. Take care, yeah.
- 20:09Good to talk to you. Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com.
- 20:11That's fascinating. So the odds are dead.
- 20:13Even dead even. I hope.
- 20:15Did you jump aboard? I didn't.
- 20:16I did. Good for you.
- 20:17Yeah. Hope somebody in our audience.
- 20:19Did too? Absolutely.
- 20:20I think we made a compelling case.
- 20:22Yeah, all the games we we he caught.
- 20:27I did not know that about the Everybody gets 2 votes like the
- 20:30Yankee beat writers get 2. So 'cause I just thought, oh,
- 20:33they'll gang up. But Snyder makes a good point.
- 20:37People in Eastern Time when they watch the game and click.
- 20:41We're going to have playoff baseball this time next week.
- 20:45Do you? Have any idea who's?
- 20:47Good. No, I don't either.
- 20:49Where we can wait, usually I have.
- 20:51Most of the times we're wrong, sure, but at least we have an
- 20:54opinion that we can take and, you know, die on that, you know?
- 20:57Right. I have no idea, Phillies.
- 21:00They're. Without their best pitcher.
- 21:03Yeah, Brewers. I don't like the Brewers.
- 21:07Where are they going to? Hit Who's going to pitch?
- 21:11Well, they're they're good there.
- 21:12Well, they're good, but they got injuries.
- 21:13The Would you think Miss Ruski's been awful LA?
- 21:17That's where I'd lean. But with confidence.
- 21:20No Cubs. No Padres.
- 21:24No, not with that rotation. I think the Reds are going to
- 21:27get in. They don't have a chance, do
- 21:28they Or do. They.
- 21:30Or do they? All right, Jays.
- 21:33Yeah. Mariners.
- 21:37You know, I like the Mariners. I do too.
- 21:38Yanks no socks. No.
- 21:44Cleve no, DEET, no I'm with you. So it narrows it down a little
- 21:50bit. So see.
- 21:51Oh man, fascinating. 6 days left in Major League Baseball.
- 21:54Regular season I got a Reds ticket.
- 21:56At you to do what to. Win the National League.
- 21:59This was like, I don't know, three weeks ago we were talking
- 22:01and they're like 3 back at the time just because I didn't like
- 22:04love any. It was, I think it was right as
- 22:05the Wheeler injury was happening within that couple of days of
- 22:08that. So I was like that you were
- 22:10bitching about the Dodgers like you do every week.
- 22:13And I'm like, you know what if they get in?
- 22:14Yeah, but. You'll miss it.
- 22:16If they get in, crazier things have happened.
- 22:22They got star power. I like the staff.
- 22:25I, I don't love any of those guys, but they're all, they're
- 22:27all solid, right? Yeah.
- 22:30Worth a shot at that price. Feeling better?
- 22:32Speaking of prices, on August the 9th you could have got Asia
- 22:36Wilson to be the MVP. 100 to one?
- 22:39No way. 100 to one at the Westgate apparently.
- 22:43Isn't that crazy? We'll take.
- 22:46We'll talk to Sam Burnaby on the other side.
- 22:47Miller and Condon talking sports with you.
- 22:49Glad you're with us. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:52All right, welcome back, Miller and Condon.
- 22:54Iowa Sports Radio Network. Top of the hour off the bench,
- 22:58Lucas Strange, Sean Roberts, take you until 5 O clock.
- 23:01Overtime, Iowa from 5:00 until 6 O clock.
- 23:05Transplays of the day still to come this hour.
- 23:07Circus sports sponsor those. All right, working on Sam
- 23:10Burnaby. He is in Chicago and apparently
- 23:13he's meeting. He thought he'd be done during
- 23:15the lunch hour, but maybe he lasted a little bit longer.
- 23:18I will promise you this. If we don't get Sam today, we
- 23:20will rebook him tomorrow because I want to speak with him.
- 23:23Had a few people text me once they've learned that Sam was on
- 23:27the show and asked them, asked me to relay a personal message
- 23:31on the air to Sam. So I'll do that.
- 23:32But we will get Sam Burtaby, if we're not today, tomorrow,
- 23:35promise. Because what we have tomorrow,
- 23:37Matt Rudy, Mitch Holtis, David Kaplan.
- 23:41So this time tomorrow we could get Sam, right.
- 23:43We don't have anything at 1:30, do we?
- 23:45No, I don't think so. I don't.
- 23:46Think so, either. So we'll do that.
- 23:48If indeed his meeting has run on Kyle Conradi, Matt Campbell made
- 23:53official he is going to be out. Likewise Jace Gilbert.
- 23:56So the kicking spot comes down to a freshman, Trent Condon,
- 24:03Chase Brown. Yeah.
- 24:04Chase Smith, Come on down. Chase Smith.
- 24:06Chase Smith, beg your. Part Chase Brown is running back
- 24:08for the Bengals. Yeah, former Lion kicker.
- 24:12Never know. I don't think a real deep leg
- 24:15and it's not just well, he can't anticipate kicking anything,
- 24:18maybe more than a 45 yarder. I wonder if that I wonder what
- 24:21the what Campbell would feel comfortable sending him out
- 24:24there for. The question was asked today.
- 24:26It was asked today. He wouldn't, he wouldn't
- 24:28answered. Of course not.
- 24:29Yeah, no, of course. Wouldn't be willing to go down
- 24:31that door. Glad somebody asked him that.
- 24:34But also another component kick offs, right?
- 24:37Yeah. And so just booting it in there
- 24:41coverage unit got to be more buttoned up.
- 24:43What kind of distance are you getting?
- 24:45What kind of coverage is it going to be?
- 24:46Maybe he can't get it in into the end zone, but it's on a line
- 24:49drive and he just miss hits it. All of a sudden that's a line
- 24:51drive that's grabbed at the two and the guy gets a whole lot
- 24:53more room making his way up. I mean, there are a lot of
- 24:56components that go into this in a game that what's the.
- 24:59Point spread at is it move? Do you know?
- 25:01Did you look? There's been, it's around a
- 25:02touchdown. I mean, that's where it's been
- 25:04basically since the beginning and I'll get a look at where it
- 25:07is today. But is this?
- 25:10I see I was still favoured 7 1/2.
- 25:13Do you feel confident that this is a surefire 6 1/2 basically
- 25:16across the board for no? I and I said as much before the
- 25:19season started, I just thought that this was going to be a
- 25:21tougher game than it would appear when the schedule come.
- 25:24There's AW, there's AW, there's an L there's a Arizona was one
- 25:27of those ones. You just you know, right in that
- 25:30they can win that game. I'm not like they should win the
- 25:32game. It's at home.
- 25:33The fan base is going to be going absolutely.
- 25:35You know what, it's under the lights, it's going to be a white
- 25:39out atmosphere is going to be phenomenal.
- 25:41One would assume Roccobecht is still the quarterback and he
- 25:46finds ways to win games more often than not.
- 25:49So we'll see it it it sounds like they're getting Burkle's
- 25:52going to be back, floor is going to be back.
- 25:54They've missed both of those guys.
- 25:56So I I think they're going to I think they're going to be fine.
- 25:59There was an issue that I want to touch on because you know me
- 26:03and it drives me crazy. This is just a text from Sam.
- 26:08Sorry, but I'm hung up. I'll, I'll, I'll read during the
- 26:12break. Devin Damfier.
- 26:15Yes, yeah. Utah quarterback.
- 26:18I don't know if Wittingham meant to say this at his press
- 26:21conference yesterday, but he did say it that his quarterback did
- 26:24not practice last week. That was a conference game.
- 26:28Yes. There was an injury report put
- 26:30out Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
- 26:33Not once did the quarterback who made it to the press conference
- 26:37and we were told in the press conference was banged up and was
- 26:40far from 100%. His name did not appear on the
- 26:43injury report. What is the designation that we
- 26:46have to have? Questionable.
- 26:48But was he questionable? Was it he didn't practice?
- 26:50He didn't. We knew.
- 26:52Here's the thing. Slow down.
- 26:55He was. He didn't practice, but we knew
- 26:57he was going to play on Saturday.
- 26:58He's not going to practice, but we know he's going to play on.
- 27:02He won't. Be 100%.
- 27:03You don't have to put questionable on that.
- 27:05If you know a guy is going to play, that's not questionable,
- 27:07he's going to play. I think we're getting into a
- 27:10little bit of that Gray area. So do you think that the winning
- 27:14ham is usually in this in his favor?
- 27:17No, I just think that. I do and I and I, you know what?
- 27:20I kind of give him credit for that.
- 27:22If your feed your theory is right and now.
- 27:26He was never questionable because we knew he was going to
- 27:28play Saturday. Yeah, he didn't practice because
- 27:30he's banged up, but we knew he was going to play Saturday.
- 27:33That's not questionable. That is probable.
- 27:36He doesn't need to be on the injury list because we knew he
- 27:39was playing Saturday. Well, and this will come this to
- 27:41no surprise, but I I emailed the Big 12 conference offices
- 27:46because this pisses me off. But do you understand where I'm
- 27:48coming from? I.
- 27:49Do. And that makes me kind of like a
- 27:51wedding ham in a different light, Like, well done, coach.
- 27:53Right. Yeah, I think that's the way you
- 27:56get around it and that's the way I'd look at it.
- 27:59See, I would want it if you're in the NFL, don't you have to
- 28:03know if if, if, if a guy it says practice or no practice, that's
- 28:08a problem? Yes.
- 28:10And they don't have that in college.
- 28:11They don't have that in the Big 12.
- 28:14You want another layer now I do you want another layer to get
- 28:18after it? Oh, you tricky Kyle Winningham.
- 28:21You. I think you.
- 28:21I think he's figured his way around this thing.
- 28:25Now, if you go into an awesome Dampier re aggravates whatever
- 28:29the injury was warming up on Saturday, it doesn't.
- 28:32This was not. This was not a guy that was
- 28:34anywhere close to 100%. But he re aggravates in pregame
- 28:37and then doesn't go. Now you're setting yourself up
- 28:40for trouble because if that comes out, then you got some
- 28:44issues, right? He didn't practice, then he
- 28:46didn't play. He was never on the injury
- 28:48report. That would be a problem, but
- 28:51that would be if I'm waiting. He started.
- 28:53That's what, that's what the hell he's gonna die on.
- 28:55That's what his. Excuses He was never
- 28:56questionable, he. Wasn't.
- 28:57Because we knew he was playing Saturday.
- 29:00I think this is a chem problem. And probably Matt Campbell,
- 29:03maybe he's going to get this clip sent to him absolutely.
- 29:06So that condoms on to something there he's got oh, if there's.
- 29:10Another coach in the conference that'll use it to his benefit.
- 29:13It's going to be him. You know what?
- 29:14I gave him a loophole. You did.
- 29:16You did Just when I thought Campbell set the bar when it
- 29:19comes to being. This, well, Whittingham has been
- 29:22so much. Worse than Campbell by Yeah,
- 29:24absolutely. I mean the the gun rising.
- 29:26He's he's still. Question.
- 29:28We went through that for two years.
- 29:30Garbage. Absolute garbage.
- 29:32And what was Who was Campbell's guy?
- 29:34Was it Downing? Was he the offensive lineman?
- 29:36There was week to week starting in Week 2 and then never played
- 29:39again. Week to week.
- 29:41Yeah, week to week. But now that he has, it does
- 29:45sound like Berko's going to be back.
- 29:46God damn it. Gosh darn it.
- 29:47Rather, I thought it was on skinny.
- 29:49I think that's OK, I can say. That I think so.
- 29:52Not my best moment, but anyways. That's all right, let's go from
- 29:58Arizona, Iowa State. I think it's a good ball keep
- 30:02that Arizona defense too is playing well now.
- 30:04Not the stiffest of competition that they played to this point.
- 30:08Why not good Weber State and then that just wreck of a
- 30:13program right now at Kansas State.
- 30:15This will be a step up for them certainly on defensive.
- 30:17But here's a couple numbers for you for Arizona.
- 30:19OK, 7th in the country right now in total defense, 222 yards a
- 30:23game. Really. 13th in passing yards
- 30:25allowed game at 113, thirtieth in the country and rushing yards
- 30:28at 96 points per game, giving up 8.76 in the country of 1/3 down
- 30:34defense. Opponents are getting through 22
- 30:371/2%. That's 8th in the country.
- 30:40Again, competition. Put that in there.
- 30:42However, this Arizona, it's not just Fafita.
- 30:45No, no, there's more. Defense is playing one.
- 30:47They do, and they got some guys that can catch the football,
- 30:49too. This is gonna be a good game.
- 30:50This is gonna be a fun game. Meanwhile, what happens in in
- 30:53Iowa City in the middle of the afternoon?
- 30:55My I got a couple of different minds here, my mind of just
- 30:59watching football, Indiana cruises.
- 31:01Yep. My gambling mind though, it must
- 31:06be something completely different.
- 31:08Why? Because everybody in the
- 31:10country. Is on.
- 31:12They are calling this free money.
- 31:15I've seen it nationally, I've seen it locally, I've seen it
- 31:18from Hawkeye fans, I've seen it from Hoosier fans.
- 31:20I've seen it from every single as we.
- 31:22All watched them pound the crap out of what we thought was a
- 31:24pretty good Illinois team. But it's week to week, I know.
- 31:28This is the first time they've gone on the road.
- 31:29Do they have a buy after this? The Hoosiers, yes.
- 31:33Indiana. After they they do I think.
- 31:35They're off before they go to Oregon, right?
- 31:38So it's not a trap per SE because they got the buy.
- 31:41In between but a let down, maybe you got national TVA full house,
- 31:47a top ten team got the win that you couldn't get a year ago
- 31:51against the top ten team you've never been on the road this
- 31:54year. You know.
- 31:56Mendoza played an environment like this.
- 31:58I don't know who Cal played last year in the ACC, no.
- 32:02Problem I don't know. 2024 Cal football Let's let's see the
- 32:07environments that young Mr. Mendoza went into a season.
- 32:11Ago. That's good.
- 32:11I'm glad you were glad you went down this path.
- 32:13Well, they went to Auburn in Week 2 and won that game, so
- 32:16that's a good environment. Absolutely.
- 32:17Went to Florida State when Florida State was off to a slow
- 32:20start, Yeah. Went to PIT.
- 32:23No, no. Went to Wake Forest, no.
- 32:26No. 28,455. Billionaire way game though.
- 32:29The Auburn game is good. That was a good one.
- 32:31Yep. And he played well in that game,
- 32:32did he? Well, they won.
- 32:33They won at Auburn, which was a huge eye opener a year ago.
- 32:37This will be different though. Indiana.
- 32:40None of these guys I. Wish it wasn't on Peacock.
- 32:43Same and we got a little problem with our Peacock.
- 32:47You do. So we got Peacock, I don't know,
- 32:50four or five years ago, three years ago, whatever it was for
- 32:54Tara's grandma, because she was a daily watcher for decades of
- 32:59Days of Our Lives and soap opera at that time, it went away from
- 33:05NBC and it became a Peacock exclusive.
- 33:08So is it? Is it off the air now?
- 33:09It is, yeah, and it has been for a number of years.
- 33:11So in order for her, though, to continue to watch it.
- 33:14But that was that was a soap opera when I was a kid.
- 33:15Oh, absolutely. Been around forever.
- 33:18And that was her daily watch. Well, they're still making the
- 33:20show. It's just only on Peacock.
- 33:22So we got it for but for whatever reason we all got
- 33:26knocked out of our account. We don't know what the password
- 33:30is. It's still logged in, but there
- 33:33is no way if we would change the password that grandma's going to
- 33:36know how to do it and we really don't want to do it.
- 33:38So I think I might just sign up for like a one month trial.
- 33:40Why don't you? And then just.
- 33:41How much is it 10 bucks? 10 bucks just bite the bullet
- 33:44and just have it for Saturday. Well, you don't.
- 33:45We don't. We need it for for Big 10 hoops
- 33:48as well. We will, and we have our.
- 33:49Subscription, but by then you'll have seen grandma.
- 33:51We'll see a grand at this point, we'll get everything buttoned up
- 33:53and we'll have everybody signed in but don't want to mess with
- 33:56days of lives so it's worth it for 10 bucks to be greatly.
- 33:59Happy you're you're 100% right. All right, let's see if we can
- 34:02make some of our betters happy. You did yesterday.
- 34:06You were on Detroit yesterday. Give you credit.
- 34:08Took the points. That was a good football game.
- 34:11That was a really good game. DEET.
- 34:13Where's DEET rank in the NFC? Are they above Green Bay in your
- 34:17mind now? No, because he can't.
- 34:19Because they played head to head.
- 34:20Yeah, he can't erase that. That's tough to do, but can't
- 34:25wait for the rematch. Closer than you'd think, though.
- 34:28So if you power rank the NFC, Philly won Green Bay 2, Detroit
- 34:323. Something, something's off with
- 34:34this Philly team. I know they're three and O
- 34:37something's not right. Rams were taking it to him for a
- 34:40long stretch of that game. And they took it to him last
- 34:42year in the playoffs. I Something stinks in
- 34:45Philadelphia. So who's the best team in the
- 34:47NFC? Still a Green Day.
- 34:51Yeah, Philly, Philly, Yeah. At the end of the day, Philly, I
- 34:53don't I the Niners are unbeaten. It's a fake 3 and O I'm sorry,
- 34:57it's a fake 3 and O they don't deserved.
- 34:58Well, they are three and O, but they're not a three and O
- 35:01unbeaten. Team The Bucks are three and O,
- 35:03but that offensive line is awful.
- 35:05They're just holding all over the place.
- 35:07And how? They they play each other.
- 35:08Philly in Tampa play this week at Tampa.
- 35:11Is worse going to be back? That game is in.
- 35:15Tampa, yeah. Nude game.
- 35:17His work's going to be back. Let's see what he's does.
- 35:20He's still. He's questionable still.
- 35:22We'll see. All right.
- 35:23Mr. Is that a Kyle Whittingham questionable?
- 35:27Now I feel bad that I shouldn't have sent an e-mail to the Big
- 35:3112 offices. Yeah, you did the right thing.
- 35:34You said you were going to enforce it.
- 35:35Now what are you going to do? Let me know the Miller and
- 35:38Condon glad you're with us. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 35:41Network. Hi Miller and Condon, welcome
- 35:44back. Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 35:45trends, plays of the day, circus sports sponsor, sponsors, those
- 35:48those coming up momentarily. So this might be coincidence or
- 35:52it might not be coincidence with the Eagles playing Tampa this
- 35:56week. Do you remember the story in the
- 35:58in training camp in August about the 465 LB defensive lineman
- 36:02from he was a Gator play for Florida.
- 36:05They brought him as an undrafted free agent, but they wouldn't
- 36:07let him this until he reached a certain threshold.
- 36:10OK. They wanted him to lose weight.
- 36:12He was 465. I mean, huge man, right?
- 36:15Guess who they signed today? Oh, really?
- 36:18Now Todd Bowles says, well, it's not because of the tush push.
- 36:21Uh huh. Uh.
- 36:22Huh. You put that big of a man. 465
- 36:26lbs. Just lay down.
- 36:27When the ball snaps, just lay down, remember?
- 36:29The old thing, I think it was maybe Jerry Tarkanian said
- 36:33something about Kentucky getting in trouble in Ball State's.
- 36:35The one that. Yeah, that was awesome.
- 36:36Did you see who got a penalty for the Tush push on the
- 36:39weekend? No.
- 36:40Who? The Saints?
- 36:42We're not. We're not going to punish for
- 36:43offsides, the Eagles, but everybody's watching closer.
- 36:46Saints, you're going to get a penalty.
- 36:48Oh my God. Well, we'll see where this goes.

- 37:16She is ineligible. I'm going to go though with the
- 37:18Mercury tonight. I think they bounce back and
- 37:20hang around against the links. I'm getting 7 1/2 to play with
- 37:22and we'll take maybe need every single one of them.
- 37:25We're going to grab it there. 630 the tip off in that one to
- 37:28baseball we go well, the Twins are playing so let's go against
- 37:32them, though the Rangers have their own set of.
- 37:35Issues they really. Do hopelessly out of it.
- 37:37Zebby Matthews though has not been good.
- 37:39Patrick Corbin on the other side also not very good, though
- 37:41better a bounce back here for him this season.
- 37:44I will leave the -131 with the Rangers and wrap it up the big
- 37:48one in the AL Central. Where are you going Give?

- 38:01of them. I will take the Guardians plus
- 38:031:30. What?
- 38:04If Detroit doesn't make it, if the Mets hilarious 2 are just
- 38:08incredible collapses some intrigue in the final week of
