- 0:00This is the most fun style of Speedway racing that I've done
- 0:02in my career. It's, it's just, it's different.
- 0:05It's different than Daytona, Talladega and, and I, I think a
- 0:09lot of it just has to do with the way that the lanes open up
- 0:12and there it seems like for the most part, there's always
- 0:15somewhere to go. And you can, you can take your
- 0:18runs, take your momentum and, and the top opens up, the bottom
- 0:21opens up and you're able to, you know, for the most part, if you
- 0:25do a good job driving and your car is handling well, you can,
- 0:28you can move forward. So yeah, I, I will echo that and
- 0:31say that this is the most fun Speedway that we that we have.
- 0:37Go to Cameron and then to Bob. Cameronrichardsonnascar.com
- 0:41Christopher, I want to know from you.
- 0:42Obviously, you know, dirt racing doesn't compare to this style,
- 0:45but get just getting back behind the wheel and dirt and having
- 0:48that early start to the season, the reaction time and just being
- 0:53able to make quick decisions. Obviously that that translates
- 0:56to NASCAR. But just how important is it to
- 0:59get actually get behind the wheel instead of just it being
- 1:01three months of, you know, SIM work before then?
- 1:04Yeah, I mean, I definitely feel, you know, the best I have is a
- 1:08race car driver. And I'm sure that some of it or
- 1:11part of it is due to the fact that I've been racing through
- 1:14the offseason. So it's it's a dream come true
- 1:17to be able to drive for Joe Gibbs Racing in these Cup Series
- 1:20cars. And I'm honored and and
- 1:22privileged to be able to have some fun outside of the Cup
- 1:25Series cars now. And I hope that, you know, I can
- 1:28make this the best year ever and, and prove to, you know, the
- 1:31company that it's, it's the right thing for me to do to be
- 1:33out there racing. Go to Bob, then the Jacob, then
- 1:37the Peter. Bob Hochrist, Fox Sports at
- 1:40Carson Hosavar Didn't thrill love other drivers day.
- 1:45And here there you are battling him for you know, you don't know
- 1:48when the cautions come out, do you?
- 1:50Are you treading lightly around him?
- 1:52Do you have? What do you, how do you race
- 1:54somebody who maybe, I don't know if you're not sure what he's
- 1:57going to do? Well, I mean, yeah, he's been
- 2:00around enough now that, you know, he's going to, you know,
- 2:04be the aggressor. If there's a hole, he's going to
- 2:06take it. If there's not a hole, he's
- 2:07going to make one. And, and he, you know,
- 2:11ultimately gave me the shove to get, you know, pass or
- 2:15breakthrough, you know, to lead the, the side draft tandem with
- 2:18myself and Kyle down the back straightaway.
- 2:21And, and then I why I didn't realize Kyle had opened up the
- 2:25bottom like he did getting into three and allowed Carson to
- 2:28sneak middle of middle of turn or middle of three wide.
- 2:31But I was looking in my mirror and I saw them crashing and, and
- 2:35I figured that it was a matter of, of winning the side draft
- 2:38battle to the, to the yellow flag.
- 2:39And I felt like I had it whenever the yellow came out,
- 2:43but that you never know until they made it, make it official.
- 2:46And then the last thing I wanted to do was go out there and, and,
- 2:49and, you know, let my emotions get to me and, and feel like I
- 2:52won the race and then them come back and say I didn't.
- 2:54So yeah, it's a he, it, it's it was, it was bonkers, that's for
- 2:59sure. Jacob.
- 3:01Jacob Steelman Race face Digital Christopher 2 for you first.
- 3:05Kind of. There I am kind of expanding on
- 3:08the the caution at the end of the race situation.
- 3:11A lot's been made of that over these first two weeks of the
- 3:15season, and I know there was a lot of driver conversation after
- 3:19Daytona and even after the Xfinity race yesterday.
- 3:23Where have you sat in this discussion and were you one of
- 3:28the drivers that had something to say after last week and the
- 3:33fact that you guys were allowed to race back to the flag at the
- 3:35500? Well, I wasn't part of that
- 3:38fair. I got, I wrecked out a couple
- 3:40laps earlier, but so, so no, I wasn't really I, I, you know,
- 3:47whenever you're out of the race, I was in the infield care
- 3:49center. I was shocked that they allowed
- 3:52them to race back to the checkered whenever the leaders
- 3:54wrecked. You know, we, we have been down
- 3:56this road before and, and I myself got crucified at
- 4:00Talladega a couple years ago because the yellow that they
- 4:03wrecked and, and I was able to, you know, avoid the wreck and I
- 4:06advanced positions and you know that they, they're like, OK,
- 4:10well, not from now on, whenever they, the cars wreck on the last
- 4:12lap, the yellow's coming out so that we don't endanger people.
- 4:15And I think it's the right call. So, you know, the, I think it
- 4:19just stems from the Thursday night duel where Eric Jones and
- 4:23Austin Syndrich had that finish. They they threw the yellow, you
- 4:26know, a couple feet before the before the line.
- 4:28And then Fast forward to the Daytona 500.
- 4:31They've been going on a couple years of not finishing under
- 4:33green. So they were determined to try
- 4:35and finish under green. But I think that's, you know,
- 4:38they're the you don't want to endanger the drivers and
- 4:42throwing the yellow flag to not make the, you know, the back
- 4:45half of the field race for position.
- 4:47That means so much. And you know, on the white flag
- 4:49lap, I think it's the right call.
- 4:51And you sit here tonight back in Victory Lane, exactly 8 months
- 4:54after your win at New Hampshire last year, Which?
- 4:56I am glad that we don't have to hear about that.
- 4:59Joe Gives Racing hasn't won since June.
- 5:01That's all I've heard, so I'm very happy to end that
- 5:04narrative. So in that narrative, though,
- 5:07obviously a lot of changes have, you know, have been made and,
- 5:11you know, seemingly have helped so far.
- 5:14But from your seat, you were the one JGR car that really
- 5:17performed well down the stretch last year.
- 5:19Was there ever any real over, I don't want to say overwhelming
- 5:25urgency, but sense of of worry that you weren't where you
- 5:29needed to be, I guess. Absolutely not.
- 5:31Absolutely not. And that's why I got so
- 5:32frustrated with all of you guys, all of you guys saying JGR
- 5:36hasn't won since June. They haven't won since June.
- 5:39Well, you look at Gateway, Gateway was could have, should
- 5:43have win. You look at what else, what
- 5:45else? We had Las Vegas that was
- 5:46definitely a could have should have win.
- 5:49You know, there's there's a a ton of races littered throughout
- 5:52that second-half of the year that, you know, at least my team
- 5:55had. I know from first hand and I'm
- 5:56sure Denny and and Martin and and I'm I don't know about Ty,
- 6:02but I know that the other guys probably had those those same
- 6:04races. So it was it is relieving to
- 6:07finally end that narrative and and we have now won on February
- 6:1220 something 2025 S not not one list anymore.
- 6:16It's officially the 23rd. Let's go to Peter and then we'll
- 6:19go to Doug. Peter's trot at TSA Sports.
- 6:22Christopher, you're no stranger to taking.
- 6:24The win in the second week of the season, but how does that
- 6:26change your mental approach for the rest of this regular season?
- 6:30Yeah, it's, it really doesn't change our approach at all.
- 6:33And leaving last year we, you know, we set out on winning more
- 6:39races. We we know that we need to win
- 6:42more races and frankly, Atlanta Motor Speedway was not one that
- 6:47we had circled. So I'm glad that we were able to
- 6:49get one here. But if we don't win another race
- 6:51before the the playoffs start or, you know, the end of the
- 6:54year and it's it's not going to be a good season for us.
- 6:56So we're here to stay and we need to, you know, prove that we
- 7:01need to to, you know, walk the walk and quit talking the talk.
- 7:05But you know, the Atlanta Motor Speedway, that comes down to
- 7:08Eric Almarola, really, he's been a huge addition to our team at
- 7:11Joe Gibbs Racing. And I'm just beyond thankful to
- 7:15have him as a mentor. And, you know, he's really
- 7:19helped myself in my mental state whenever it comes to these races
- 7:22because I, I, I normally don't enjoy coming to the, the
- 7:27superspeedway stuff. And and Eric has done a great
- 7:29job of of making sure that I am the best Speedway racer that I
- 7:33can be. Go to Doug and then the Jerry.
- 7:37Thank you, Matt, Doug Turnbull for PRN of the Five to Go
- 7:40podcast at Daytona. I feel like Toyota's changed the
- 7:45narrative about their qualifying because there was a lot of fast
- 7:48Toyota's there. And then we came to Atlanta.
- 7:51And then, but then you didn't run as well as Daytona, then you
- 7:54come to Atlanta, qualify the back and run up front.
- 7:56So what's what's the difference for the driver's seat behind the
- 7:59wheel? I know you're not going to give
- 8:00us a setup sheet here, OK. But what's the difference behind
- 8:03the wheel that your car's doing and it does it have to be
- 8:06significantly different at Atlanta because handling some
- 8:08much more important. Here, honestly, I, I am just
- 8:13struggling to put the correlation together between
- 8:15qualifying and racing. And you know, the whole motto is
- 8:19if you don't qualify well, you're going to race well.
- 8:21And if you qualify well, Oh my gosh, is the car going to drive
- 8:24good? Well, you know, we, the, the,
- 8:27the JGR cars qualified really well at, at Daytona and we raced
- 8:33how we did. However, that was and then here
- 8:34we qualified as bad as it gets and it raced pretty similar, I
- 8:39would say so. And then the Penskeys, they've
- 8:42been the best of the Penske cars, have been the best of both
- 8:45worlds. They've qualified well, they
- 8:46raced well. So I don't know.
- 8:48I don't know what to say about qualifying or what to think
- 8:50about it. But at this point I don't.
- 8:53I genuinely just don't think it matters because I've had good
- 8:57races qualifying bad and I've had bad races qualifying good.
- 9:01Jerry. Jerry Jordan kicking
- 9:03thetires.net So you said you have a list circled.
- 9:06Tell us what that list is and why is Vegas at the top?
- 9:09A list circled of of the races you.
- 9:10Want to? Win of the races.
- 9:12Yeah, so well, Coda. Coda is a good place to start.
- 9:16Honestly, we're just getting into the the the bread and
- 9:19butter of what you know that the 20 car likes.
- 9:21You know, Coda should be a strong track.
- 9:23Phoenix, Vegas, Darlington Homestead, all of these tracks
- 9:26coming up in the early part of the season is where we think we
- 9:28can that, you know, compete for wins and and do good score a lot
- 9:32of points. And Atlanta was not one of those
- 9:34race tracks that we had circled. So it's it's very refreshing to
- 9:37to be able to get one early in the season, especially one where
- 9:40we didn't expect to win at. So hopefully we can, you know,
- 9:44keep keep the ball rolling. What?
- 9:45Vegas coming up in a couple weeks, is that you feel like
- 9:48that what kind of owed you guys when we talked?
- 9:50Last year, well, I felt like Vegas has owed me one for a very
- 9:53long time. I go back to the Truck Series, I
- 9:56never won a Vegas, the Xfinity Series I've never won a Vegas.
- 9:59In the Cup Series I've never won a Vegas.
- 10:02But I would be curious to see the stats.
- 10:05I feel like I've LED more laps at Vegas than I have any other
- 10:08track without any wins at. So yeah, we'll we'll try again
- 10:13in a couple weeks and hopefully it plays out a little bit
- 10:16different. We'll go to your right, the
- 10:18Cameron. Cameronrichardsonnascar.com You
- 10:21never know when your next one comes at the Cub level.
- 10:24And you know, when the schedule came out for this year, New
- 10:26Hampshire and Gateway were in the playoffs, so.
- 10:29Yeah, I'm excited about that. Now, now that you do have that
- 10:31win out of the way, just just how much more does that get you
- 10:34excited about the postseason knowing that you have that win
- 10:36now in the bag and are in the playoffs?
- 10:38Well, I mean, I don't know, I yes, it is refreshing to be
- 10:43locked in, but I know I go back to what I said earlier, if we
- 10:45don't win another race before the playoffs, you know, we're
- 10:47not performing up to the standards that we hold ourselves
- 10:50to. So, you know, the Gateway and
- 10:53Loudon being in the playoffs are two great race tracks for me and
- 10:57I'm super excited about the round of 16 and the round of 12.
- 11:02I'm kind of dreading the round of eight.
- 11:03But you know, hopefully we score points and, and we need to bank
- 11:07a lot of playoff points before we get to those races and and
- 11:11help our cause whenever we get to the round of eight.
- 11:14Go next to Matt and then the Chris, Matt Weaver Sports.
- 11:18Not. I'm actually fascinated by the
- 11:21Eric Almarola element there. I'm curious, how often is he
- 11:25like in y'all's meetings? Is it just superspeedways or
- 11:28places where he's good or is it every week?
- 11:30I mean, what is his? Addition, yeah, so it's every
- 11:33week and I would say the majority of his input and
- 11:40expertise has come on the Speedway side because he came
- 11:43from a very successful superspeedway organization and
- 11:46manufacturer and he's provided a lot of valuable input into my
- 11:50driving style, Adams setup choice and you know our
- 11:54strategy. So he has tremendously helped
- 11:57myself in the 20 car as, as a, you know, Speedway racer and
- 12:00Speedway team. But he, he's there every week.
- 12:04Every week he's going through the, the debrief and talking
- 12:06about what he sees and what, you know, we need to be better.
- 12:10And he's just a super smart and experienced guy.
- 12:16So he's, he's very valuable to have and, and I'm, you know,
- 12:19very grateful to have him on our team.
- 12:21He's been a a huge resource to us the last couple years.
- 12:25Good to middle with Chris. First night catchments.com
- 12:30Christopher, can you start 32nd? Here in June and still.
- 12:32Win the race or is the mentality?
- 12:34Change. No, I, I think you can, I mean,
- 12:36Blaney, he spun out with what tend to go was that tend to go?
- 12:39He spun out, is that right? Somewhere around there And he
- 12:44drove all the way up through there.
- 12:45So I, you know, I think if, if your car is driving good and you
- 12:50do a good job driving, you can, you can make your way through
- 12:52the field. And, you know, the, the
- 12:54beginning part of the race, I started in the 30s and, and I
- 12:57could get up to the teens, but then I would stall out and just
- 13:00just couldn't figure out the moves that I needed to make to
- 13:03get up front. And, and so, yeah, I mean, I, I
- 13:07think that here at Atlanta, this package, for whatever reason at
- 13:11this racetrack has allowed the, the cream to rise to the top a
- 13:15little bit better. So, yeah, I, I, I'm careful
- 13:21saying that because I don't feel the same way about Daytona
- 13:24Talladega, but here it certainly works.
- 13:26Do the temperatures make that much of a difference between
- 13:28here in June or is that just? Something that everybody.
- 13:31Just likes to talk about and use it as an excuse.
- 13:33It doesn't feel like it makes that much of a difference
- 13:35honestly. Well, Christopher, Oh, we've got
- 13:39one word to Bob here in the middle.
- 13:42You were kind of a Parker Sox Sports.
- 13:45You were a little bit far behind the Cindric Larson deal, but I'm
- 13:50curious if you saw saw it and could.
- 13:53Kind of see your view. What was that?
- 13:54The wreck off of turn 2? Yeah, yeah.
- 13:57Right. I, I'll be honest that I, I
- 13:59wasn't focused on that. I just, I saw them.
- 14:02Cindric got into the wall off of two and then he spun across the
- 14:05racetrack. So I I didn't.
- 14:08I saw it out of my peripheral, but I didn't see exactly what
- 14:10happened. OK.
- 14:13Well, Christopher, congratulations on the wing.
- 14:15Good luck next week in CODA. Thank you guys.
