- 0:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Or if you are joining us, uh, as you always do, since episode number one, we do have a quite extensive catalog of episodes.

- 1:10Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Any donation, any purchase in our merch shop, which the uh the URL is in the description below or to the side uh of uh you watching here.
- 1:24Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um any any donation, whether it's straight donation or purchase in our merch shop uh here in the United States is 100% federally tax deductible.
- 1:38Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And if you live outside of the United States, you just want to check with your tax preparer uh to understand the rules for donating to a charity in the United States.
- 1:51Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh thank you for being with us, and uh this episode is gonna be a little bit um uh straight to the point and a little bit a little bit difficult at the same time.
- 2:05Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh so we know that uh or a lot of us know that screen time for everybody, whether children, uh whether they're young adults, adults, uh whatever age they may be, seems to be ticking up and has been for quite some time.
- 2:35Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And we as parents and just human beings, we want we want to uh we want to make sure that we're spending as much time as we can away from the screens because uh we we know that there are a lot of studies that have been concluded, and then there's all all kinds of studies being uh being run uh at the at the current time.
- 3:12Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um and some of those studies we're gonna talk about here today.
- 3:17Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh there was an article that was uh published, and we're gonna give uh the credit where credit's due.
- 3:28Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And uh this has nothing to do with politics, so it just happens to be the news outlet that um broke this story, at least for for us to be able to see it and and talk about it.
- 3:47Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um, and so this is coming from um coming from Fox News, this report, and there's probably a bunch of other news outlets that have this as well, but this is a public safety announcement, public service announcement.
- 4:04Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, because not only you know, I mentioned at the outset how we want to decrease screen time, one of the big areas is the big reasons why is because it's link was it's it's got an addicting manner to it, uh, where we don't want to put the phone down, we don't want to put the the iPad, the computer, the netbook, whatever, whatever screen it may be, the TV, we don't want to turn it off.
- 4:42Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Well, you know, we're streaming, you know, season and after season of our favorite shows.
- 4:49Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh and there have been again studies that have been done, and we're gonna jump into some of that right now for this particular episode because we do share public service announcements, public safety announcements.
- 5:09Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We we share them for uh as many topics as we can.
- 5:15Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So some of you have uh signaled that we don't, that we just kind of make things up, and well, we don't.
- 5:28Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um, I mean, I can show you right here uh that I have a story up, and I didn't write it, I didn't do the research, um, but I do agree uh with this story, and it is titled uh Meta's Child Safety Penalties near one billion dollars as court orders new teen protections.
- 5:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So that's a straight quote from uh the Fox Business, Fox News, uh, and Meta.
- 6:04Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh that's the parent of uh Facebook and I believe also Instagram right now.
- 6:12Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so we're gonna just we're gonna read through the article verbatim and then we're gonna talk about it.
- 6:18Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh so here we go.
- 6:20Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And we're quoting this.
- 6:21Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So a nearly one billion dollar blow to Meta.
- 6:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: The tech giant is being forced to make another massive payout after a New Mexico court found Facebook and Instagram contributed to the state's youth mental health crisis.
- 6:40Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Meta was ordered Thursday, uh, I think this was last week, uh, to pay$567 million on top of a$375 million jury award in March, bringing its total liability in the case to nearly$142 million.
- 7:07Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Meta must also roll out sweeping teen safety measures over the next five years, including monthly limits on Facebook and Instagram use, notification restrictions, tighter controls on adults contacting minors, human trafficking, ding ding ding.
- 7:33Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Where have we heard this before?
- 7:35Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Adults contacting minors, and safeguards for AI, artificial intelligence, chatbots, meta told Fox business, it disagrees with the ruling and plans to appeal.
- 7:51Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So if we look at more in depth, the court ordered changes are, and there's some bullet points here, are to delete unverified accounts for users under thirteen years of age, to block overnight and school day notifications, automatically blur nude images, restrict unknown adults from messaging minors, limit Facebook and Instagram use to ninety hours a month.
- 8:31Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so there's a little bit of a backstory.
- 8:34Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: In twenty twenty-three, New Mexico sued Meta over child safety risks.
- 8:41Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Meta's algorithms push children toward harmful content and predators.
- 8:49Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: A judge ruled Meta was a public nuisance due to its wider harm to children and society.
- 9:00Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so when we look at the total uh the total dollars uh that are being um levied against Meta, and so that's the$375 million from previous civil penalties, plus an additional judgment of$567 million, and that comes to a grand total at the moment of$942 million, which is just about one billion dollars.
- 9:37Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um, and and so this is Mexico, uh New Mexico, not Mexico, sorry for that, New Mexico's court.
- 9:51Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um and I agree that there needs to be, especially as we're talking about children, okay?
- 10:03Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um there needs to be more safeguards in place.
- 10:09Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: The fact that adults can contact minors is just sickening.
- 10:22Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like, why why does an adult need to contact a minor?
- 10:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Go through the parent, go through the guardian.
- 10:29Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You don't need to contact a minor.
- 10:32Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Get out of here.
- 10:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And for those individuals out there who say, well, the minor came to me and asked me questions, and so um I was just helping them out and and helping them because it didn't seem like anybody else.
- 10:53Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Well, you know what you do in those cases?
- 10:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You know what you do in those cases?
- 10:59Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You reach out to the parent or you reach out to the school, you reach out to somebody who is the adult, the guardian of that child, and let them work through this.
- 11:19Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Let them go to therapy, to a trained therapist, trained counselor, trained psychiatrist, not some random adult that is just stepping in as if that's what their job is.
- 11:46Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And it's not, it's a hundred percent not, it's not appropriate for adults.
- 11:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I mean we have we have talked throughout some of our episodes about some of this activity.
- 12:20Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like why?
- 12:24Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Okay, what activity would need to be going on for a child to feel like they can't talk to their own mom, their own dad, their own guardian about things?
- 12:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Well, go to the doctor, go to a counselor, go to a therapist.
- 12:41Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: If there's one in your school, go there, get your help from a professional, and have that parent be that uh middle person, but that that parent and guardian and or guardian should be the one handling the communication from any adult to them.
- 13:08Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: That's just the way it should be.
- 13:10Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I wonder how many other states besides New Mexico have these laws.
- 13:17Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: How many more children have to go missing?
- 13:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: All too well known are the stories we hear about well, such and such was spending a lot a lot more time on online than they they had before.
- 13:51Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I'm not sure who they were talking to.
- 13:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And sometimes, unfortunately, the the children, and for that matter the adults too.
- 14:05Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: If somebody is looking to do harm, sometimes if not all they're looking to do harm, period.
- 14:25Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You know, a minor under the age of eighteen especially, and here we have a lot of money, right?
- 14:41Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So Meta's being fined close to one billion dollars.
- 14:50Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And Meta has all these sweeping regulations, sweeping changes that they have to do.
- 14:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: They should have done it in the first place.
- 15:01Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It shouldn't have to come from losing a court case or having a court case, period.
- 15:09Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: They should just do it because it's right.
- 15:14Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because it's right.
- 15:24Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: How they would feel if so-and-so 60-some years old reaches out to talk to your child or your you're the guardian for a child.
- 15:44Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: How would you feel about that?
- 15:46Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Would you be cool with that?
- 15:48Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I don't think so.
- 15:50Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And for those that say yes, you're just you're you're you're not fooling anybody.
- 16:03Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because if you think that's okay, then that child needs a new guardian.
- 16:10Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Somebody needs to step in and help that child.
- 16:17Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Before they disappear.
- 16:22Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And some unfortunately don't come back.
- 16:28Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So I applaud New Mexico.
- 16:31Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Thank you, New Mexico.
- 16:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: What about the other states?
- 16:38Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: In the United States of America.
- 16:45Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: This is a public safety announcement, public service announcement, because again, this is happening in the public.
- 16:59Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Out in the public.
- 17:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: That we never used to have until phones like these messaging that came come before.
- 17:20Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Before we had AOL, MySpace, you know, Yahoo! Messenger.
- 17:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Maybe, maybe there's still some of those out there.
- 17:29Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But those were the extent of it.
- 17:32Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Now there's so many apps out there, so many social media platforms that makes it so easy.
- 17:44Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so it's a public service, public safety announcement, because I don't want any more children to go missing.
- 17:52Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I don't want any more parents to go into their child's room and find them deceased.
- 18:05Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because they were extorted or sex storted.
- 18:10Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because somebody was pretending to be somebody who they weren't.
- 18:21Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And in some instances, unfortunately, the child takes their own life.
- 18:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I don't want that to happen again.
- 18:32Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Ever.
- 18:38Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And for the parents, the guardians, the coaches, all that.
- 18:45Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You need to do an even better job checking in with your guardians, with your uh with your team.
- 18:59Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You know, some of this goes on unfortunately in a lot of different ways, in a lot of different places.
- 19:10Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Anytime there's a group gathering, this stuff can happen.
- 19:21Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And it is unfortunate that we're even having this conversation, that I even have to have an episode about this.
- 19:33Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So that's why we're having this episode.
- 19:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because it's so darn important that we need to keep our children alive, safe.
- 19:44Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And if a parent's not gonna do the job, you're fired.
- 19:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's like if you don't have I don't know.
- 20:06Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You hire somebody to do a job, they don't do it, you fire 'em.
- 20:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So by downloading, you know, the Meta's apps, Facebook, Instagram, I'm not sure if they have any others.
- 20:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: They should be getting fired by these children and their parents.
- 20:38Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Cause all it takes is one, all it takes is one message, all it takes is one person to come into your child or children's lives to step in thinking that they're okay to talk about sex, porn cutting, you name it, with a child that's not their own, that they're not the guardian, they're not the parent of, they're not even a counselor, they're not a psychiatrist.
- 21:22Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because the people that do that unfortunately are up the nefarious activities.
- 21:32Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: What an adult should do if they would ever come in contact with that, that's not their child, that's not that they're not the guardian of, they tell their parents, you tell the adult, the guardian, who is the parent andor guardian of that child.
- 21:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You don't just talk to them.
- 22:00Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Just because oh well they reached out and um I just figured that I could help them out.
- 22:06Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Well, you know what?
- 22:07Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: That's great you want to think like that.
- 22:09Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's great you want to help people help the child even more by having them talk to their own parents, their own guardians.
- 22:24Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: An aunt, uncle, a cousin, mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, stepmom, stepdad.
- 22:33Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You get the idea.
- 22:35Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Not somebody who, well, they messaged me, so I I just this is just what I do.
- 22:44Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I'm helping them.
- 22:46Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: No, you're not.
- 22:50Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Too many children have unfortunately will go missing because of this nonsense.
- 23:03Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so New Mexico, I applaud you.
- 23:06Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We applaud you.
- 23:08Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: See, we want safety and security for everybody across the world, even our enemies.
- 23:14Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We hope that there is safety, security.
- 23:17Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We don't want harm coming to anyone.
- 23:25Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: All of our shows, whether it's been hard topics, easy topics, whether we've called out a certain organization or group, we have never talked about harming those individuals.
- 23:48Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's a difference between law and order than I wish harm.
- 24:00Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because we've gotten a lot of that lately.
- 24:03Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: A lot of people are putting comments out there calling me a lot of names, and I'm not going to mention them here because they'll get censored.
- 24:19Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: But what you need to know, and what they need to know, is we've never once called for harm to anyone.
- 24:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Physical harm, spiritual harm, mental harm, none of that.
- 24:38Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You can still have law and order and still not want harm to come to a person or persons or organizations.
- 24:54Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I kindly ask that we lower that temperature down.
- 25:03Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Cause that's where we start talking about the bystanders and the upstanders.
- 25:07Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: The bystanders are the people just let those comments go, and they even sometimes add fuel to the fire, and let's do this, let's do that, let's do all these.
- 25:18Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: An upstander steps in and says, Hey everybody, what are we talking about?
- 25:27Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's one thing to not be on somebody's side, but it's a whole nother thing.
- 25:37Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: The sitting there and wishing harm.
- 25:52Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because it just adds it'll just add more fuel.
- 26:03Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So as a country, as a nation, as a world, as a human being, let's do more helping.
- 26:19Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And I'm not talking about the helping of well, somebody from my church reached out, or somebody, and and so I was just helping them out.
- 26:29Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um, I'm not talking about that type of helping.
- 26:34Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I'm talking about getting getting that child or children's family, guardian, getting them involved, school counselor, somebody who's a professional and is actually connected to that child.
- 26:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Or in some cases, those adults.
- 27:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I don't know how many other states we have.
- 27:13Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: This was New Mexico.
- 27:19Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's not time to sit.
- 27:22Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's time to stand.
- 27:25Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's not time to be a bystander and watch things go by because we've watched too many things go by.
- 27:34Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We look at each other and go, well, I can't believe that happened.
- 27:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: That will never happen around me in the next potentially period of time.
- 27:43Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Maybe something like that happens, goes, Oh, I can't believe it happened here.
- 27:48Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Folks, hey, if we're just gonna watch it go by and we're not gonna take a stand, what do we think is gonna happen?
- 27:59Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Let's not be a bystander, let's be an upstander.
- 28:05Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We've heard the phrase over and over again.
- 28:07Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: If you see or hear something, you say something, and so I'm seeing something, I'm hearing something, I'm saying something, and I just have a teeny teeny teeny teeny tiny microphone.
- 28:25Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: That's it.
- 28:25Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I just got a teeny teeny teeny tiny microphone with voices for voices and our podcast and TV show.
- 28:38Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So again, I do this.
- 28:42Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We can help one child, one individual from stepping off that ledge from Xing out of that chat box, that chat window when somebody you don't recognize.
- 29:02Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You talk to your mom, your dad, aunt, your uncle, or your guardian, whoever.
- 29:08Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Let them figure that out.
- 29:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You're a child, go play, have some fun, and let's try to stay away from screens.
- 29:20Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: That goes for adults too.
- 29:23Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So, thank you for joining us on this episode of the show.
- 29:27Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So happy to have you with us, so humbled and grateful that you could spend any time with the Voices for Voices family.
- 29:34Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So, until next time, let's be a voice for not just us, but maybe somebody else in need that isn't able to share their voice.
- 29:44Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And let's celebrate the voices of the world.
- 29:50Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Let's have some law and order, but then let's also celebrate those voices.
- 29:57Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Those professionals, those people that are truly wanting to help.
- 30:02Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Not stepping into a role with no training, no expertise.
- 30:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Yeah, I pray that New Mexico is not the last state that has some of these elements in these these cases.
- 30:34Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Let's all do our part.
- 30:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And lastly, if we see or hear something, we gotta say something.
- 30:43Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: If somebody's not listening, we go above.
- 30:48Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: That's somebody's not listening, we go above.
- 30:57Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: The voices for voices platform is one of those spots.
- 31:01Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We just got a teeny teeny tiny microphone, teeny tiny megaphone.
- 31:10Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And we can help one person at a time.
- 31:13Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So we'll see you next time.
- 31:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We're sending our love and support your way, and we'll see you on the next show.
- 31:21Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Bye bye for now.
