- 1:21Speaker 1: Don't know if she's thirteen. You're running away now.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Everyone.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I'm Chris Hansen today on Crime Watch Daily. Two young women,
- 1:31Speaker 1: two murders, two killers still on the loose. Let's first
- 1:35Speaker 1: head to Michigan, where stunning singer Egypt Covington was preparing
- 1:39Speaker 1: for a big news step in her life when tragedy
- 1:41Speaker 1: would strike. Ana Garcia is here now with our top story,
- 1:45Speaker 1: Justice for Egypt, Chris.
- 1:47Speaker 4: It's in this Michigan neighborhood where a man goes to
- 1:50Speaker 4: check on his girlfriend because she's been off the grid
- 1:52Speaker 4: all day. What he would find would shock friends and
- 1:56Speaker 4: family and baffle police.
- 1:59Speaker 11: When Covington walked into a room, people noticed she was
- 2:03Speaker 11: so beautiful. Men flocked around her, and when she'd sing Ye,
- 2:13Speaker 11: people listened.
- 2:15Speaker 3: She had a voice that could roll out there, She
- 2:17Speaker 3: could belt, She had power in her voice.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Although blues was her favorite, Egypt could sing anything.
- 2:26Speaker 6: She went country idol here in Michigan.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Off stage, her career was also hitting a high note.
- 2:33Speaker 12: She had finally found a job that she really liked.
- 2:35Speaker 12: She was working for a beverage distribution company and she
- 2:39Speaker 12: knew that she had a future there.
- 2:41Speaker 4: She was also passionate about Curtis Meadows.
- 2:44Speaker 6: She loved Curtis.
- 2:47Speaker 4: The two met nearly a decade ago, and the attraction
- 2:51Speaker 4: was immediate.
- 2:52Speaker 13: Since she met him and knew him, he had a.
- 2:54Speaker 5: Crush on her.
- 2:55Speaker 14: Yes, Stefine Mo Stefin.
- 2:58Speaker 4: But in the beginning, there's schedules made dating difficult.
- 3:02Speaker 14: She was a bartender. I have a daughter.
- 3:05Speaker 10: That was more of what you say at nine to
- 3:06Speaker 10: five and I'm going to work, she's coming home from work.
- 3:10Speaker 4: For years, they were on and off, out of sight,
- 3:13Speaker 4: but never out of mind.
- 3:15Speaker 14: I thought about her constantly.
- 3:16Speaker 10: Every scenario and situation I was in my life, I
- 3:20Speaker 10: thought how much better it would be if she was there.
- 3:23Speaker 13: Even when they were broken up, she loved Curtis. She
- 3:26Speaker 13: always wanted to be with Curtis.
- 3:28Speaker 4: And after almost ten years, Curtis was finally ready to commit.
- 3:34Speaker 15: I think Curtis finally got to a point where he said,
- 3:37Speaker 15: I can't let you go.
- 3:38Speaker 6: You know, I'm in love with you.
- 3:41Speaker 5: What had changed.
- 3:42Speaker 14: We were on the same schedule.
- 3:43Speaker 10: We could have a dinner and the eight pm together,
- 3:47Speaker 10: which she would say, a normal relationship.
- 3:50Speaker 14: So it was great.
- 3:51Speaker 4: It was perfect, so perfect, the two decided to take
- 3:55Speaker 4: the next step.
- 3:57Speaker 14: I was moving in in July.
- 3:59Speaker 4: My lease was up, Lindsey Briley says Egypt was excited
- 4:03Speaker 4: about the move. In fact, it was the last thing
- 4:06Speaker 4: the two talked about the night her best friend was
- 4:10Speaker 4: violently murdered.
- 4:12Speaker 5: What is the last thing you said to her?
- 4:14Speaker 13: That I was too tired to come over and she
- 4:17Speaker 13: should try to come over my house.
- 4:18Speaker 5: And she said that she had to go clean and
- 4:20Speaker 5: get ready for Curtis to move in.
- 4:23Speaker 4: A text to Curtis a couple of hours later, is
- 4:26Speaker 4: the last time he'd ever hear from the love.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Of his life.
- 4:30Speaker 14: I lay down.
- 4:30Speaker 10: It was a little after ten o'clock and I told
- 4:33Speaker 10: her good night, and I loved her, and she said
- 4:36Speaker 10: ninety night.
- 4:38Speaker 4: The next day, his usual good morning text got no reply.
- 4:43Speaker 10: Oh, usually she's pretty quick within responding, you know, within
- 4:47Speaker 10: five minutes, ten minutes, So I sent her another one.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Throughout the day, his texts and phone call strangely went unanswered.
- 4:57Speaker 4: So after a late Father's Day dinner with his daughter,
- 5:00Speaker 4: Curtis headed over to Egypt's house.
- 5:02Speaker 10: Tried calling her one last time on the way to
- 5:05Speaker 10: her house, and no answer.
- 5:08Speaker 4: When he turned onto her street.
- 5:11Speaker 10: Seen her car in the driveway, and my stomach just
- 5:13Speaker 10: sank just.
- 5:15Speaker 14: He something was right.
- 5:17Speaker 10: I knew the ideal of her fricketting her phone was
- 5:20Speaker 10: no longer there.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Egypt lived in a duplex with her little dog Ruby.
- 5:26Speaker 4: When Curtis walked up, he noticed the door was open.
- 5:30Speaker 10: I took a step in two steps, and I yelled
- 5:33Speaker 10: her name, Egypt and her dog Ruby bart.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Ruby comes running into the kitchen, and Curtis immediately notices
- 5:43Speaker 4: something is off.
- 5:45Speaker 10: Usually when you see Ruby, she just can't wait to
- 5:47Speaker 10: like chump in your lap and kiss you. But she
- 5:49Speaker 10: just looked at me, made eye contact and turned around,
- 5:52Speaker 10: like follow me.
- 5:55Speaker 4: What Curtis saw when he followed Ruby will haunt him
- 5:58Speaker 4: for the rest of his life.
- 6:00Speaker 10: And I've seen her feet and then I took one
- 6:03Speaker 10: more and I've seen her.
- 6:11Speaker 14: She was bound.
- 6:14Speaker 10: With her heads behind her back in a feetal position,
- 6:18Speaker 10: laying on the ground.
- 6:21Speaker 14: Like covering her head in a.
- 6:26Speaker 4: No.
- 6:26Speaker 14: You just know she's.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Gone horrified at the sight, Curtis runs outside to call
- 6:34Speaker 4: nine one one.
- 6:35Speaker 10: I don't remember any of that call. I don't remember
- 6:38Speaker 10: anything thereafter. It was just like I clinked.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Egypt Covington had been shot one time in the back
- 6:46Speaker 4: of the head. Her depraved killer didn't stop there. Her
- 6:51Speaker 4: sister said that she had been tied up with Christmas lights.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Yes, was she tied to the front of.
- 6:57Speaker 6: The back back.
- 6:59Speaker 10: She was laying with her left side up, her face down,
- 7:02Speaker 10: kind of like in a fetal position, with her hands
- 7:06Speaker 10: bound behind her back.
- 7:08Speaker 4: There was no sign of forced entry or of a robbery.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Ruby is believed to be the only witness to the killing.
- 7:17Speaker 15: Poor Ruby was there by herself with her the entire time.
- 7:20Speaker 5: If only Ruby could talk.
- 7:22Speaker 6: I know, I know.
- 7:25Speaker 15: I called around to experts to find out if she
- 7:29Speaker 15: ran into the person that did it, would they react differently,
- 7:33Speaker 15: and they said she could. She could shy back from them,
- 7:39Speaker 15: but it's not a proven style.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Had Egypt's neighbors across the hall and her duplex been
- 7:45Speaker 4: home that night, her family says they surely would have
- 7:48Speaker 4: heard the gunshot. They believe it's no coincidence they were
- 7:53Speaker 4: out of town.
- 7:54Speaker 16: The person who did this new her schedule, knew her
- 7:58Speaker 16: neighbor's schedule.
- 7:59Speaker 12: And they knew that her neighbors were out of town.
- 8:03Speaker 12: Because everybody knew that her neighbors went to this festival.
- 8:07Speaker 4: From day one, cops have said Egypt likely knew her killer.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Her father Chuck agrees.
- 8:14Speaker 5: Do you believe that she was killed by someone she knew?
- 8:17Speaker 2: Yes?
- 8:18Speaker 5: And if she knew her killer, then perhaps so do you?
- 8:23Speaker 5: Probably who would want to kill your sister?
- 8:27Speaker 6: That's what I'd like to know. That's really what I'd
- 8:29Speaker 6: like to know.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Initially, cops had one person in mind. Generally, when someone
- 8:36Speaker 4: is found murdered, the police always look at the significant other.
- 8:40Speaker 5: Yes, which would be you in this case?
- 8:46Speaker 4: Up next, interrogated for the murder of his girlfriend.
- 8:49Speaker 14: And I was strapped down taking a light attacker test.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Plus troubling signs in the weeks leading up to Egypt's
- 8:57Speaker 4: killing very terrifying.
- 8:59Speaker 6: I was scared for her her.
- 9:02Speaker 1: We return now to today's story, Justice for Egypt once again.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Here is Ana Garcia in Michigan.
- 9:09Speaker 5: Chris Bluesinger.
- 9:10Speaker 4: Egypt Covington has been shot and killed in her own home.
- 9:13Speaker 4: As police try to track down the gunman, her family
- 9:17Speaker 4: would reveal troubling details about her life in the months
- 9:21Speaker 4: leading up to the murder. At twenty seven years old,
- 9:26Speaker 4: Egypt Covington's life was taking off.
- 9:28Speaker 12: She had finally found a job that she really liked.
- 9:31Speaker 12: She had just bought a new card. She had started
- 9:35Speaker 12: dating a new boyfriend.
- 9:36Speaker 4: And not just any boyfriend.
- 9:39Speaker 5: She was in love with him.
- 9:40Speaker 6: She was in love with him.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Egypt and Curtis Meadows had dated on and off for years,
- 9:46Speaker 4: but now both were ready to take the next step.
- 9:50Speaker 16: She and Curtis were going to move in together, and
- 9:51Speaker 16: she was very excited about that.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Just days before he was supposed to move in, Curtis
- 9:58Speaker 4: Meadows found his girlfriend shot to death inside her home
- 10:02Speaker 4: in Van Buren Township, Michigan.
- 10:05Speaker 14: I was a wastate of my life, the beginning of it.
- 10:17Speaker 4: The beautiful Blues singer had been bound with Christmas lights,
- 10:21Speaker 4: a chilling detail Curtis didn't think he'd ever share.
- 10:25Speaker 10: I didn't want people to have that image in their
- 10:27Speaker 10: head and having, you know, affect them the way it
- 10:31Speaker 10: did me.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Police say there was no sign of forced entry and
- 10:36Speaker 4: no sign of robbery. They believe Egypt knew her killer,
- 10:40Speaker 4: and probably very well. The cops are pretty clear that
- 10:44Speaker 4: it wasn't a robbery. Whoever killed her knew her, No,
- 10:48Speaker 4: she knew naturally. The first person questioned by cops her boyfriend, Curtis.
- 10:54Speaker 5: The police say they grilled you.
- 10:57Speaker 10: I was strapped down taking a light attacked or test.
- 11:01Speaker 10: Three days later I think of finding her.
- 11:05Speaker 14: It has been hell.
- 11:06Speaker 10: You know, the only thing I'm guilty of is loving her.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Cops quickly determined Curtis had no involvement in Egypt's murder.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Did you even for a moment consider the possibility that
- 11:20Speaker 4: Curtis may have been involved? No? But then who wanted
- 11:25Speaker 4: Egypt Covington dead? Who had a motive and enough rage
- 11:30Speaker 4: to murder the beautiful twenty seven year old?
- 11:33Speaker 5: Does that?
- 11:33Speaker 13: I mean, anybody that knew her and knew the situation
- 11:37Speaker 13: that found out that she got murdered had one thought
- 11:39Speaker 13: in her.
- 11:41Speaker 4: That thought pointed to who, and it was kept tightly
- 11:45Speaker 4: under wraps until now.
- 11:47Speaker 6: That makes me sick to my stomach.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Just as Crime Watch Daily starts to investigate Egypt's killing,
- 11:53Speaker 4: police for the first time name a person of interest.
- 11:57Speaker 4: The name comes as no surprise to the most of
- 12:00Speaker 4: Egypt's family and friends.
- 12:02Speaker 6: I begged her to stop talking to him.
- 12:05Speaker 4: During Curtis in Egypt's time apart. Beth Covington says the
- 12:09Speaker 4: only person her sister ever dated was Kenny mitchellac At
- 12:13Speaker 4: times she claims the relationship was volatile.
- 12:17Speaker 17: He was so crazy and would look through her phone
- 12:20Speaker 17: and would blow up her friends, like if she didn't
- 12:24Speaker 17: answer where she at where she at? I found out
- 12:27Speaker 17: about how many of her friends he slept with to
- 12:33Speaker 17: be little heard to make her feel worthless.
- 12:37Speaker 4: But Beth says she had no idea just how strained
- 12:40Speaker 4: the relationship had become until their last family vacation on
- 12:45Speaker 4: board a private yacht in the Caribbean.
- 12:48Speaker 17: She just started spooing, like everything that has occurred over
- 12:54Speaker 17: the years, What did she say? Onm I heard about
- 12:57Speaker 17: times where he would get mad and punch the wall
- 12:59Speaker 17: next to her head.
- 13:00Speaker 6: He really liked to shove her a lot. From what
- 13:03Speaker 6: she told me.
- 13:04Speaker 17: At a wedding that she attended, he threw her up
- 13:07Speaker 17: against a wall.
- 13:09Speaker 4: Egypt didn't confide in many people about the alleged abuse,
- 13:13Speaker 4: but she did tell Curtis what happened at the wedding.
- 13:16Speaker 10: After the wedding, I guess back at the hotel, there
- 13:19Speaker 10: was a get together and he got physical with her.
- 13:22Speaker 10: What she'd explained, it was more or less grabbing her,
- 13:26Speaker 10: pushing her up against the wall, you know, and kind
- 13:29Speaker 10: of restraining her things.
- 13:32Speaker 4: According to Curtis, the cops were called, but no charges
- 13:36Speaker 4: were filed.
- 13:37Speaker 10: From what she said, the wedding party, in their way,
- 13:40Speaker 10: kind of made her feel guilty of like ruining the celebration.
- 13:44Speaker 5: Looking back on it, you wish that she had filed charges. Now.
- 13:47Speaker 10: I don't know if it would have changed the outcome
- 13:49Speaker 10: or anything, but maybe that would have got more people
- 13:52Speaker 10: like her parents aware of the situation.
- 13:56Speaker 5: Did Egypt ever share any problems as far as physical
- 14:01Speaker 5: violence or.
- 14:03Speaker 16: She didn't mention to me about any physical violence. She
- 14:07Speaker 16: did speak of arguments verbal abuse.
- 14:15Speaker 4: Chuck Covington says his daughter certainly never told him about
- 14:19Speaker 4: any of the alleged abuse, and he believes he knows why.
- 14:22Speaker 3: She might not have wanted him to get into more
- 14:24Speaker 3: trouble than he would sharing. It would have brought reaction,
- 14:28Speaker 3: and maybe she didn't want the reaction.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Are you upset that no one told you what was
- 14:33Speaker 5: going on?
- 14:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I've never really thought about. It's what happened, it's
- 14:37Speaker 3: how it worked.
- 14:38Speaker 5: Yeah, and you could have helped.
- 14:41Speaker 3: I'm sure.
- 14:44Speaker 4: With no police reports ever filed, crime Watch Daily cannot
- 14:48Speaker 4: verify the allegations of abuse made by her family and friends.
- 14:53Speaker 4: We do know that Egypt eventually ended the relationship and
- 14:57Speaker 4: the two remained friends.
- 15:00Speaker 13: It took a long time for her to actually make
- 15:01Speaker 13: him understand that they were broken up, and I think
- 15:04Speaker 13: that maybe she could have been more stern when.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Egypt told Kenny she was back with Curtis. Her sister
- 15:11Speaker 4: claims he didn't.
- 15:13Speaker 6: Take it well all call her was really upset.
- 15:21Speaker 4: The month before her murder, Curtis claims Kenny showed up
- 15:24Speaker 4: at his house early one Sunday morning. He says, as usual,
- 15:29Speaker 4: Egypt had spent the night.
- 15:31Speaker 10: I was on the third story, and she parked right
- 15:33Speaker 10: in the parking lot, which is just right outside my window.
- 15:37Speaker 10: I'd looked at her car, and I noticed his truck
- 15:39Speaker 10: parked right behind it, and he was snooping around her vehicle,
- 15:43Speaker 10: looking in the windows, and just kind of went around
- 15:46Speaker 10: at one circle and then got in his truck and
- 15:50Speaker 10: took off.
- 15:50Speaker 5: That's crazy, very crazy.
- 15:54Speaker 4: Curtis claims Egypt confronted Kenny about it, and he told
- 15:57Speaker 4: her that he was in the area for work when
- 16:00Speaker 4: he noticed her sun roof open in the rain.
- 16:03Speaker 5: What did your gut tell you was going on?
- 16:05Speaker 10: I thought possibly that he had some kind of tracker.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Kristen Covington claims her stepdaughter was starting to wonder the
- 16:14Speaker 4: same thing.
- 16:15Speaker 16: She did, mention that he was always when she would
- 16:18Speaker 16: go somewhere, that he would be there in the background.
- 16:21Speaker 4: The last time anyone saw Egypt and Kenny together was
- 16:25Speaker 4: at the Belleville Strawberry Festival.
- 16:27Speaker 14: I let her know.
- 16:28Speaker 10: I was like, hey, listen, you know, Kenny's here with
- 16:30Speaker 10: so and so. And she's like, oh really where I'm like, well,
- 16:32Speaker 10: he's by where you get your drinks.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Curtis claims the encounter was explosive.
- 16:38Speaker 10: Out of corner my eye, I can see her coming,
- 16:40Speaker 10: storming up to our table. He was right on her heels,
- 16:43Speaker 10: like following her.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Curtis claims Kenny was enraged.
- 16:48Speaker 10: She said he found out that you were moving.
- 16:51Speaker 5: In, and he was upset about it.
- 16:53Speaker 14: Yeah, I guess, you know, he h. I don't know.
- 16:58Speaker 14: Maybe he felt like all hope is gone.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Did you get a sense from her that she was
- 17:05Speaker 4: worried or really upset by him?
- 17:08Speaker 10: No, no, no, I never got the feeling that she
- 17:15Speaker 10: was threatened by him.
- 17:17Speaker 4: But Egypt's stepmom claims she was in fact scared to
- 17:20Speaker 4: tell Kenny that Curtis was moving in.
- 17:23Speaker 6: She was fearful.
- 17:24Speaker 16: I said, do you think that this could be concerning?
- 17:27Speaker 16: And she said, Mom, he's like a lost puppy. You know,
- 17:31Speaker 16: I feel bad. And I said, well, we can't always
- 17:33Speaker 16: say all lost puppies.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Egypt may not have been worried, but her sister Beth was.
- 17:39Speaker 17: It's very terrifying, like I was scared for her. Like
- 17:43Speaker 17: I really kept begging her, please stop talking to him.
- 17:46Speaker 6: She was like, I promise to see it. I'll stop
- 17:48Speaker 6: talking to him.
- 17:51Speaker 4: As far as anyone knows, the last time Egypt and
- 17:54Speaker 4: Kenny talked was at the Strawberry Festival. One week later,
- 17:58Speaker 4: she was found shot to death. Up next, Kenny mitchellac
- 18:03Speaker 4: now officially a person of interest. Will he respond to
- 18:07Speaker 4: the allegations against him.
- 18:09Speaker 7: We've been told by her family and friends that you
- 18:12Speaker 7: were abusive towards her.
- 18:14Speaker 4: And a surprising show of support for Egypt's ex he.
- 18:17Speaker 6: Was not abusive to her. I don't care what anybody says.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Now back to our murder mystery.
- 18:26Speaker 1: In Michigan, Blues singer Egypt Covington has been shot and
- 18:30Speaker 1: killed in her home. Please have just named her ex
- 18:32Speaker 1: boyfriend as a person of interest when her family claims was.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Obsessed with her.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Today, our Ana Garcia went looking for him to see
- 18:40Speaker 1: what he's saying about Egypt's murder.
- 18:44Speaker 4: When Egypt Covington was found bound with Christmas lights and
- 18:48Speaker 4: shot to death inside her home last June, many people
- 18:52Speaker 4: in her life immediately pointed a finger at the same person.
- 18:56Speaker 5: Did you suspect anyone right away?
- 18:59Speaker 13: Yeah? I mean the one person that she had decided
- 19:03Speaker 13: to leave behind because there's nobody else that would want
- 19:06Speaker 13: her dead.
- 19:08Speaker 4: They claim. Egypt's ex boyfriend, Kenny mitchellac couldn't handle the
- 19:12Speaker 4: fact that she was back with her longtime love Curtis Meadows.
- 19:17Speaker 5: Was it difficult to.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Have him constantly in the background while she was starting
- 19:23Speaker 4: her relationship again with Curtis?
- 19:27Speaker 6: That made it very difficult.
- 19:28Speaker 4: They allege Kenny's temper exploded when he learned Curtis was moving.
- 19:33Speaker 16: In with her, telling him to not go all that well.
- 19:37Speaker 4: Exactly one week later, Curtis found Egypt's body. Do you
- 19:42Speaker 4: think any of those allegations of the abuse that may
- 19:47Speaker 4: have been going on in her relationship with that ex
- 19:51Speaker 4: boyfriend had anything to do with her murder?
- 19:54Speaker 3: It would be connecting the dots. Those examples of violence
- 19:57Speaker 3: are fact and those are the only examples of violence
- 20:00Speaker 3: that I know of in any of her relationships.
- 20:05Speaker 4: Is it really hard for you and your family to know,
- 20:08Speaker 4: if in your hearts you believe he is the one
- 20:10Speaker 4: who killed her sister, that he is still out there.
- 20:13Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 20:13Speaker 17: It makes me sick to my stomach, makes me sick
- 20:16Speaker 17: to my stomach that other people support him.
- 20:19Speaker 4: In an interesting twist, one of the people who supports
- 20:22Speaker 4: Kenny is Egypt's own mother, Tina Covington. She doesn't believe
- 20:27Speaker 4: Kenny was ever abusive toward her daughter.
- 20:30Speaker 15: She would come to my house and cry, They would
- 20:33Speaker 15: get into arguments. He was not abusive to her. I
- 20:37Speaker 15: don't care what anybody says. She would have told me
- 20:40Speaker 15: and I've never seen a mark on her.
- 20:43Speaker 5: However, in her.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Very next sentence, she seems to confirm some level of
- 20:48Speaker 4: abuse in the relationship.
- 20:50Speaker 15: There might have been an incident of pushing that I
- 20:56Speaker 15: had heard about.
- 20:57Speaker 4: In the months following her daughter's murder. Tina allowed Kenny
- 21:01Speaker 4: to babysit Egypt's dog, Ruby.
- 21:04Speaker 15: He loves Ruby. I know Egypt would have let him
- 21:08Speaker 15: have Ruby. She let him take her anytime, and I.
- 21:14Speaker 6: Just I couldn't say no.
- 21:16Speaker 5: But that upset your family.
- 21:18Speaker 15: Yeah, yeah, And it wasn't that I was trying to
- 21:23Speaker 15: do anything except he had to be suffered.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Why do you think they feel so strongly that he
- 21:30Speaker 4: was involved in you feel so strongly he wasn't you know?
- 21:34Speaker 15: I was raised to believe that you don't ruin somebody's
- 21:39Speaker 15: life without proof.
- 21:41Speaker 4: Our interview with Tina Covington came weeks before cops officially
- 21:45Speaker 4: named Kenny MITCHELLAC a person of interest in her daughter's murder,
- 21:49Speaker 4: but that hasn't changed Tina's opinion. She believes after nine months,
- 21:54Speaker 4: cops simply felt pressured to name someone.
- 21:57Speaker 15: I don't want to be judgmental with it, but I
- 22:00Speaker 15: think we have a small department. If they've come to
- 22:05Speaker 15: a spot where they can't get any further evidence, I
- 22:11Speaker 15: think they need to do the right thing and turn
- 22:12Speaker 15: it over to the state police or somebody else.
- 22:17Speaker 4: She feels other potential suspects are being overlooked.
- 22:21Speaker 15: She worked in a job that everybody loved her, but
- 22:24Speaker 15: she also was in a field that anybody could have
- 22:26Speaker 15: followed her home.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Do you think that whoever killed your daughter that it
- 22:30Speaker 4: was a random person.
- 22:33Speaker 15: I think that Egypt was in the wrong place at
- 22:38Speaker 15: the wrong time.
- 22:39Speaker 5: But it was her house.
- 22:40Speaker 6: I know.
- 22:42Speaker 4: She claims. Egypt no longer felt safe in her own home.
- 22:47Speaker 15: She lived in a duplex. There was so much traffic
- 22:50Speaker 15: going next door. And that's all I'm gonna say.
- 22:56Speaker 4: But cops in Van Buren Township tell Crime Watch Daily
- 22:59Speaker 4: that right now Kenny Mitchillak is their only person of
- 23:03Speaker 4: interest in the case.
- 23:05Speaker 7: Now the police have named Egypt's ex boyfriend is a
- 23:08Speaker 7: person of interest in her murder.
- 23:10Speaker 5: We've got some questions for him.
- 23:12Speaker 4: With so many accusations flying, we tracked down Kenny at
- 23:16Speaker 4: the home he now shares with a new girlfriend to
- 23:19Speaker 4: see if he talk with us.
- 23:22Speaker 7: Hey, Kenny, Hi Anagar Saa from Crime Watch Daily.
- 23:25Speaker 4: This is audio of our conversation.
- 23:29Speaker 2: I don't mind answering questions. They just have to go
- 23:31Speaker 2: to my lawyer.
- 23:31Speaker 5: But you've been named a person of interest in her murder.
- 23:34Speaker 2: I don't know, I'd have to talk.
- 23:35Speaker 1: To my lawyer.
- 23:37Speaker 4: When's the last time you saw her?
- 23:39Speaker 5: Could you take all the questions from my lawyer?
- 23:41Speaker 17: Please?
- 23:42Speaker 5: Yeah? But is there anything you can tell us?
- 23:44Speaker 7: I mean, we've been told by her family and friends
- 23:47Speaker 7: that you were abusive towards her.
- 23:50Speaker 4: Was Kenny denied ever abusing Egypt, but didn't want to
- 23:53Speaker 4: talk about her murder abusive.
- 23:56Speaker 5: My questions through my lawyer, Please we will call him again.
- 23:59Speaker 6: Thank you so.
- 24:00Speaker 4: In a statement to Crime Watch Daily, Kenny Mitchellac's lawyer,
- 24:04Speaker 4: Dan gurn writes, Van Buren Township Police noted in their
- 24:08Speaker 4: recent press release that my client was not currently in
- 24:12Speaker 4: communication with the department, which is a bit misleading. He
- 24:16Speaker 4: fully cooperated with police, interviewed with them on multiple occasions,
- 24:21Speaker 4: provided a full timeline of his whereabouts during the days
- 24:25Speaker 4: surrounding Miss Covington's death, and has remained in town the
- 24:30Speaker 4: entire ten months of this investigation. Further, since being retained
- 24:34Speaker 4: to represent him in late June twenty seventeen, I have
- 24:38Speaker 4: reached out to and spoken with Van Buren Township Police
- 24:42Speaker 4: on dozens of occasions, asking for updates and seeing if
- 24:45Speaker 4: they needed anything from us. He goes on to be
- 24:49Speaker 4: certain he continues to maintain his absolute innocence regarding anything
- 24:54Speaker 4: to do with Miss Covington's death, as he has from
- 24:58Speaker 4: the very beginning, and but yet beyond publicly naming Kenny
- 25:02Speaker 4: in this still unfolding case, investigators have taken another rather
- 25:06Speaker 4: strategic step advising people who have donated billboards where to
- 25:12Speaker 4: place them to help solve Egypt's murder. We spotted several
- 25:16Speaker 4: in Kenny's neighborhood, even on his street. Are you hoping
- 25:20Speaker 4: that that is pressuring this person, keeping this crime in
- 25:25Speaker 4: the foremost of their mind.
- 25:27Speaker 3: This is where I break from what my daughter would
- 25:29Speaker 3: want me to say. But I hope the killer walks
- 25:32Speaker 3: by there, drives by there, and gets laggravated, that they
- 25:35Speaker 3: put a gun in their mouth.
- 25:37Speaker 6: Take care of it for all of us.
- 25:39Speaker 4: For Egypt's boyfriend, Curtis Meadows, the billboards serve as a
- 25:43Speaker 4: painful reminder of what he lost.
- 25:46Speaker 14: Sometimes I just put my hand over my heart. Sometimes
- 25:50Speaker 14: I blow him a kiss, you know.
- 25:54Speaker 10: Sometimes it's just a little saying that I got you, Egypt,
- 25:57Speaker 10: I got you.
- 25:58Speaker 17: You know.
- 26:00Speaker 4: One thing everyone in Egypt's life agrees on. Her killer
- 26:04Speaker 4: must be brought to justice.
- 26:06Speaker 12: My sister deserved better than this, and my sister deserves justice.
- 26:14Speaker 6: You deserve to know what happened.
- 26:16Speaker 17: I think that the police are doing everything that they can.
- 26:20Speaker 17: I really truly believe that, and I know that when
- 26:23Speaker 17: they make that arrest that it's going to stay.
- 26:26Speaker 4: But sadly, even when that day comes, it won't do
- 26:30Speaker 4: anything to fix the whole that's left in their hearts
- 26:34Speaker 4: by Egypt's absence.
- 26:36Speaker 10: She is irreplaceable. This world is less without her in it,
- 26:40Speaker 10: and that's what hurts the most.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Investigators tell us they're waiting on the results of quote
- 26:46Speaker 1: sensitive DNA testing to come back, and they believe it
- 26:49Speaker 1: will go a long way in helping to bring Egypt's
- 26:52Speaker 1: killer to justice. Will, of course, keep you posted on
- 26:55Speaker 1: those results until then. If you know anything about Egypt's murder,
- 26:58Speaker 1: you're asked to call Crime Stop a Michigan. That number
- 27:01Speaker 1: is one eight hundred.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Speak up.
- 27:05Speaker 5: Up.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Next, A mystery in Myrtle Beach.
- 27:08Speaker 9: She was studying fashion.
- 27:09Speaker 5: She really was very artsy.
- 27:11Speaker 1: A young college student just days away from graduation is
- 27:15Speaker 1: out running errands when she was hit in the face.
- 27:18Speaker 9: With something so hard that the injury looked like a
- 27:21Speaker 9: gunshot wound.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Who killed Amber? The clues caught on surveillance video.
- 27:26Speaker 6: There was a.
- 27:26Speaker 9: Dark figure in her passenger's side.
- 27:30Speaker 14: That's next.
- 27:33Speaker 2: R a Crime Watch daily.
- 27:34Speaker 1: We get hundreds of letters and emails every week from
- 27:37Speaker 1: families looking for our help with unsolved crimes. This next
- 27:41Speaker 1: story came to us from Amanda Burbilia. Her sister Amber
- 27:45Speaker 1: was just twenty three years old when she was murdered,
- 27:48Speaker 1: and today Amanda and her family are hoping one of
- 27:50Speaker 1: our viewers can help bring them closure.
- 27:52Speaker 2: They so desperately need. A horrifying sight.
- 27:58Speaker 8: We got a call around for clock here at the
- 28:00Speaker 8: station that a body had been found in.
- 28:04Speaker 1: The mud, a dead body of a young woman laying
- 28:07Speaker 1: near her car under a freeway overpath.
- 28:11Speaker 9: She was hit in the face with something so hard
- 28:14Speaker 9: that the injury looked like a gunshot wound.
- 28:17Speaker 2: The perplexing evidence.
- 28:19Speaker 9: You know, she wasn't sexually assaulted, she wasn't robbed.
- 28:22Speaker 1: And that desperate haunt for Amber Babilia is to kill her.
- 28:26Speaker 1: It's a mystery that has baffled Amber's family. Who killed her?
- 28:31Speaker 1: And why haven't police solved the crime.
- 28:33Speaker 9: I don't think that the investigation ever really took off,
- 28:38Speaker 9: you know, I feel like they immediately started, you know,
- 28:44Speaker 9: coming up against walls.
- 28:45Speaker 2: At twenty three.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Amber was a social butterfly, a petite young woman who
- 28:52Speaker 1: loved to sing and dance. Her sister Amanda says, as
- 28:55Speaker 1: teenagers there were little devils who gave their parents constant headaches.
- 29:00Speaker 9: She would get caught sneaking out, she'd get grounded, and
- 29:02Speaker 9: she would have to sneak out again and she would
- 29:05Speaker 9: get grounded. She was grounded for the entire summer, but
- 29:08Speaker 9: she probably had the best summer that year.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Amber dreamed of one day becoming a costume designer and
- 29:15Speaker 1: worked to achieve her goal in London at design.
- 29:17Speaker 9: School, she was studying fashion. She really was very artsy.
- 29:22Speaker 9: She loved anything having to do with art in fashion.
- 29:26Speaker 9: She had her own style, so she was having in
- 29:29Speaker 9: that direction.
- 29:31Speaker 1: After completing her studies abroad, Amber returned to her home
- 29:34Speaker 1: in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and on the last day
- 29:37Speaker 1: of her sister's life, Amanda remembers working the lad shift
- 29:41Speaker 1: waitressing when she noticed her phone blowing up.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Family members were desperate to reach her.
- 29:47Speaker 18: My aunt's husband told me that there had been an accident,
- 29:52Speaker 18: that Amber had been shot. It didn't register yet what
- 29:57Speaker 18: he was telling me, and I said, well, is she okay?
- 29:59Speaker 18: Where she What do you mean she was shot?
- 30:01Speaker 9: And he said, I'm sorry, honey, she's gone.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Amber talked to her family the day before she died.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Her mom now cherishes the last voicemail Amber left her.
- 30:18Speaker 19: Silence.
- 30:20Speaker 5: Tuggar and so are you.
- 30:23Speaker 10: I love you, good night.
- 30:26Speaker 1: But the question that hangs in the air, who would
- 30:29Speaker 1: want Amber dead? It's a mystery that leaves a grieving
- 30:32Speaker 1: family struggling for answers.
- 30:35Speaker 9: She had a great soul and she would never hurt
- 30:38Speaker 9: anybody or do anything to hurt anybody.
- 30:42Speaker 5: Okay, I'll go first.
- 30:44Speaker 9: Then she would give her last dollar if that, you know,
- 30:50Speaker 9: helping somebody else or making somebody else happy.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Caitlin Stancil from our Myrtle Beach affiliate WMBF has been
- 30:57Speaker 1: covering Amber's murder case since her body was found, and
- 31:01Speaker 1: recalls even comps were baffled from the very beginning.
- 31:05Speaker 8: It seems pretty random. Amber wasn't someone that was involved
- 31:08Speaker 8: in criminal activity. She wasn't doing anything illegal. She had
- 31:12Speaker 8: a bright future ahead of her, and this just kind
- 31:14Speaker 8: of happened out of nowhere.
- 31:16Speaker 6: It seemed.
- 31:17Speaker 1: The brucive murder scene was called in to police by
- 31:20Speaker 1: a random person who just happened to be passing by.
- 31:23Speaker 8: It was really a disturbing scene. The car was running
- 31:27Speaker 8: right there by her body, and her cell phone still
- 31:29Speaker 8: getting text messages and email alerts, was just a few
- 31:33Speaker 8: inches from her fingertips.
- 31:35Speaker 1: And even more disturbing the brutal way Amber met her
- 31:39Speaker 1: tragic in.
- 31:40Speaker 8: Originally, Or County detectives thought that she had been shot,
- 31:44Speaker 8: but after an autopsy, they came back and said that
- 31:46Speaker 8: she had been beaten to death, that she had been
- 31:49Speaker 8: hit twice in the head.
- 31:51Speaker 1: The autopsy also revealed that Amber didn't go down without
- 31:55Speaker 1: a fight.
- 31:55Speaker 8: It had bruises and cuts up and down her arms,
- 31:58Speaker 8: showing that she did right back when all this was happening.
- 32:02Speaker 1: As comps dig deeper into the case, they soon learn
- 32:05Speaker 1: Amber has a fiance, but is there another mystery.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Man top nice.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Amber's final moments with these images hold the key to
- 32:14Speaker 1: solving her murder.
- 32:15Speaker 9: There's cameras all over the city in Middle Beach, so
- 32:17Speaker 9: they have her, you know, in her car that day
- 32:20Speaker 9: running her errands, and there was a dark figure in
- 32:24Speaker 9: her passenger's side.
- 32:28Speaker 1: These are the last public images of Amber Reblia, alive,
- 32:32Speaker 1: apparently on her way to work. Hours later, this pretty
- 32:37Speaker 1: young woman in the prime of her life is found.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Dead, murdered in broad daylight.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Her body found lying under a freeway overpass in Myrtle Beach,
- 32:46Speaker 1: South Carolina.
- 32:47Speaker 5: She's been then jured severely and was deceased.
- 32:50Speaker 4: When we arrived, she was near a vehicle and there
- 32:54Speaker 4: was no witnesses on scene.
- 32:56Speaker 1: At first, cops thought Amber had been shot twice in
- 32:59Speaker 1: the head. The corner's report soon reveals she actually died
- 33:03Speaker 1: from blunt force trauma.
- 33:05Speaker 8: Originally, Or County detectives thought that she had been shot,
- 33:09Speaker 8: but after an autopsy, they came back and said that
- 33:11Speaker 8: she had been beaten to death and that it was
- 33:14Speaker 8: a pretty brutal murder.
- 33:15Speaker 1: The cops know how she died, but the identity of
- 33:18Speaker 1: the killer is still a mystery.
- 33:21Speaker 9: It's just such a confusing situation, it really is, you know,
- 33:24Speaker 9: for her to be found dead in the middle of
- 33:27Speaker 9: the day on a Friday afternoon, you know, on the
- 33:30Speaker 9: side of the street.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Police cordon off the area and scour the muddy clearing
- 33:35Speaker 1: where Amber's body was found looking for clues, but their
- 33:39Speaker 1: search comes up empty.
- 33:41Speaker 8: They were looking into every little single piece of evidence there.
- 33:45Speaker 8: But the issue was is that there wasn't a lot
- 33:48Speaker 8: for them to even look for them.
- 33:50Speaker 1: So cops turned to Amber's personal life and quickly learned
- 33:53Speaker 1: the twenty three year old had a fiance, a guy
- 33:58Speaker 1: she met while studying in.
- 33:59Speaker 9: London, and it was like a whirlwind, you know, one
- 34:03Speaker 9: of those movie romances.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Jose Soulaire, a handsome college student from Spain, swept Amber
- 34:09Speaker 1: off her feet. Her family loved Jose, and by all accounts,
- 34:14Speaker 1: the couple had a fairy tale relationship.
- 34:17Speaker 9: They had the relationship that everybody wishes that they could find.
- 34:22Speaker 9: He just loved every every bit of her, and you
- 34:24Speaker 9: can tell when he looked at her that he saw
- 34:30Speaker 9: everything good about her.
- 34:33Speaker 1: After two years of dating, the couple got engaged. Her
- 34:35Speaker 1: mom shares the early morning phone message with the happy.
- 34:38Speaker 9: News as Amber, I just want to tell you.
- 34:46Speaker 16: God getting verri.
- 34:51Speaker 4: Ingage and wanted to call you.
- 34:54Speaker 2: And tell you.
- 34:55Speaker 1: And when Amber returns to the States, there's a flory
- 34:58Speaker 1: of pre wedding activity.
- 35:00Speaker 9: I know that her and my mother and my grandmother
- 35:02Speaker 9: had come shopping for the dress.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Dreams of that white wedding would turn dark. Amber was
- 35:08Speaker 1: killed just six weeks before she was set to walk
- 35:11Speaker 1: down the aisle with Jose.
- 35:12Speaker 19: She was shown her wedding dress off to some friends
- 35:17Speaker 19: the night before the next say she was murdered.
- 35:19Speaker 9: She you know, was always making jokes and he just
- 35:24Speaker 9: loved every bit of her.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Cops immediately focus on Jose, but it didn't take long
- 35:31Speaker 1: to run into a dead end.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Jose had an airtight alibi. He was in Europe.
- 35:39Speaker 1: At least it's a helpful clue. Cops now Tracey Amber's
- 35:43Speaker 1: steps just hours before her death. Amber's family claims police
- 35:47Speaker 1: show them surveillance video of Amber paying her cable bill
- 35:50Speaker 1: at about one thirty in the afternoon of her murder.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Amber's body was found a little more than a mile
- 35:55Speaker 1: away about two hours later.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Cops wonder if those.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Security cameras in the cable office identify a possible suspect.
- 36:02Speaker 9: They noticed in the cameras at the time Warner Place
- 36:05Speaker 9: that the person in line behind her was looking at
- 36:09Speaker 9: her kind of in a aggressive manner.
- 36:14Speaker 5: I guess.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Police haven't publicly released the surveillance video, but when they
- 36:19Speaker 1: track down a question that mystery man, the family says
- 36:22Speaker 1: he's clear. Detectives then pick up Amber's trail to a
- 36:26Speaker 1: gas station where surveillance cameras capture the last released images
- 36:30Speaker 1: of her.
- 36:30Speaker 2: A lot.
- 36:31Speaker 1: That's Amber wearing black pants, a lever top and glasses.
- 36:34Speaker 8: The surveillance footage shows Amber they are making a purchase.
- 36:37Speaker 8: You see or go up to the counter.
- 36:40Speaker 1: But much to the frustration of cops and Amber's family.
- 36:43Speaker 1: Nothing comes from that video. The investigation is at a
- 36:46Speaker 1: stands film. Then investigators find other videos.
- 36:50Speaker 6: There may have been two.
- 36:54Speaker 9: African American people that men that she have had some
- 37:00Speaker 9: sort of association with.
- 37:03Speaker 1: Copsei's footage from security cameras mounted all along the highway,
- 37:06Speaker 1: though they're not releasing those videos either. The footage apparently
- 37:10Speaker 1: shows Amber's SUV and cop say she wasn't alone that day.
- 37:14Speaker 9: So they have her, you know, in her car that
- 37:17Speaker 9: day running her errands and she went off on a
- 37:21Speaker 9: side street where there weren't any cameras for like a
- 37:24Speaker 9: half hours all they lost her for or something like that,
- 37:28Speaker 9: and when she came back they into camera view there
- 37:34Speaker 9: was a dark figure in her passenger's side. They were
