- 0:02Melinda Lee: Welcome to another speak in flow podcast episode.
- 0:06I'm glad you're here, because today we are going to dive into
- 0:09the world of connection, establishing a genuine
- 0:14connection. A connection is a bond, a bond where people, both
- 0:21parties, who are there feel seen, heard and valued. Have you
- 0:28ever been with someone where you are so seen and valued, there's
- 0:33a connection there, there's a bond, it doesn't feel good to be
- 0:37with that person, where you just feel safe. Imagine feeling like
- 0:43that, when you are speaking to your audience, allowing your
- 0:48audience to feel so connected to you through this bond, and
- 0:53connection. I have a question for you. Do you feel seen heard
- 1:00and valued? Are you seeing as a true strategic leader within
- 1:06your organisation? Or are you just working really, really
- 1:10hard, overwhelmed, and then starting to communicate in a way
- 1:16that isn't outbursts and outlash? If you are feeling that
- 1:22you're getting to that point, this is your episode. Because
- 1:25today, we're going to give you some tips on how to get
- 1:30grounded, how to go back into establishing a connection with
- 1:33yourself and with your team members. So that at least even
- 1:39if you're feeling overwhelmed, at least they know where you're
- 1:43at, at least you're communicating in a way that
- 1:47makes you effective leader. So I know that feeling valued, seen
- 1:55and heard. Sounds great. But I think it's more difficult than
- 2:00people think to do or know how to do. Because establishing a
- 2:06connection, a genuine authentic connection means that especially
- 2:10as a leader, you need to go first to do that. And how do you
- 2:15do that? Well, that means that you need to bring your whole
- 2:20self in. Now, let me explain. I think most people, when they go
- 2:24to meet with somebody, they are showing their best selves, like
- 2:29their strengths, oh, this is all that I can do. And everything
- 2:32that I've got all my strengths, and I only want you to see my
- 2:35strengths. And, and then I try to hide my vulnerabilities, my
- 2:40weaknesses, or I pretend that they're not there. And sometimes
- 2:45often when you do that, when we're trying to hide certain
- 2:48parts of us, what ends up happening is that the receiver
- 2:53may feel there's a disconnect, the receiver senses, you may be
- 2:57hiding something. Or you may come off as too robotic to
- 3:02perfect. And I see this, especially when we're delivering
- 3:05presentations, right? We're trying to be someone that we're
- 3:09not, we're trying to exude confidence look like we have it
- 3:12all together look like we have everything and we know it all.
- 3:15And we can we get all the questions answered. And the
- 3:19challenge is when we're trying so hard to prove that we are
- 3:24somebody, we start to become less human. And when you can
- 3:30start to accept some of the vulnerabilities or the parts of
- 3:33you that feel less less than or perceived as broken, when you
- 3:38accept them, then others will accept you or you start to lower
- 3:45your guard, there's no barrier, when you're trying to pretend
- 3:49that they're not there, there's a very, you can subconsciously
- 3:51put up a barrier without even knowing it. And when you allow
- 3:57yourself to say, Hey, I might mess up and that's okay. Or I
- 4:02made like out as frightening as it is, I am still accepted. When
- 4:08you start to do that, more than likely, whatever you're afraid
- 4:13of. It may not even show anyways. But that requires that
- 4:16you have to go with acceptance of these things that you feel
- 4:19are broken. And once you do that, then the other people,
- 4:24your audience, or the person that is in front of you can also
- 4:27lower their guard, they can feel there's a connection, that
- 4:31you're not blocking, you're not hiding. And so when they sense
- 4:34that you're not hiding anything, then you start to establish a
- 4:39connection, a bond because they can come into the relationship,
- 4:44lowering their guard and feeling like they can bring their whole
- 4:49selves not just a part of themselves, not just what they
- 4:51feel like are their strengths, but that you accept them for
- 4:55both their strengths and their vulnerabilities. Because you've
- 4:59accepted and your strengths and vulnerabilities. It's easier
- 5:05said than done, right. But as a leader, accepting that you you
- 5:11need help, and you don't have everything together requires
- 5:16that you lead anyways, knowing that you don't have everything
- 5:19together, knowing that you can still do this. And when you do
- 5:24that, you can start to establish a connection. And when you
- 5:27establish a connection, people feel safe, then they can feel
- 5:32safe to be heard. They can feel safe to be seen and valued. And
- 5:37then they're more assured of you, as a leader, they're
- 5:40assured of you in the relationship, they're assured of
- 5:43you and what you're saying the trust builds your increased
- 5:47influences your increase your influence. And so now I want you
- 5:53to take it even a step further. establishing connections, one to
- 5:58one. That's, that could be that's pretty easy, right? Would
- 6:04you agree that that's not too bad? What about all eyes on you?
- 6:12establishing connections, even when there's all eyes on you?
- 6:17What does that like? What does that when you feeling that into
- 6:20your body? How do you feel in your body? Do you feel nervous?
- 6:25Not as comfortable, not as easy? Correct? How about all eyes on
- 6:30you, a lots of eyes on you. And allowing people to see your
- 6:36strengths, your vulnerabilities just you as a human. That is
- 6:44what makes a great leader. That is when you're so comfortable in
- 6:48your own skin, allowing people to see just you. And that is
- 6:55when you build trust. And that is when you can lead more
- 6:59powerful teams. That is when you're moving initiatives
- 7:03forward because the people on your team will go to you to the
- 7:07end of the world. So how can we make this practical, right? Like
- 7:13the this is a concept of establishing connections? How
- 7:17can we make this practical in our everyday life as a leader? I
- 7:23want you to first start with establishing a connection with
- 7:26your own eyes. And then we'll move on to how do you do that in
- 7:29a presentation. Every day, connect with your own eyes.
- 7:35Because if you can't connect with your own eyes, how are you
- 7:38going to expect lots of eyes on you to feel safe and feel
- 7:43comfortable, so sturdy to feel safe with your own pair of eyes.
- 7:50And to do that, it's actually not that difficult. I want you
- 7:56to grab your phone because the mirrors right there. And you can
- 8:01look into your own eyes. Or if you're at home, and you're
- 8:05brushing your teeth. After finishing getting your tooth
- 8:09teeth cleaned, you want to take a moment to just look at your
- 8:12eyes. And if you have your phone right now with you, why don't
- 8:17you go ahead and grab it. And you can do this with me. It's
- 8:21just gonna take a couple minutes, but just starting to
- 8:24get more comfortable with your own eyes. And in a moment, we're
- 8:28going to hold the camera up to our eyes, but before and we're
- 8:32going to say some silent messages to our own self with
- 8:36your eyes. And so we're going to first get grounded and then
- 8:41we'll have you hold up the phone. So go ahead and grab the
- 8:43phone. And before we hold the phone up to our eyes, I want you
- 8:50to just go ahead and close your eyes and we're going to get real
- 8:53centred and grounded. And so go ahead and close your eyes if you
- 8:58are not driving. And if you're driving or somewhere out, you
- 9:03can still do this with your eyes open. But if you're home and
- 9:07feeling safe, go ahead and close your eyes. It's more powerful
- 9:11and you can get connected within you. And this is a wonderful
- 9:15exercise to do even before a presentation to help you feel
- 9:20centred. As you close your eyes, take a nice deep breath and
- 9:28exhale. Now I want you to imagine there's a golden ball.
- 9:38This golden ball is your power centre and it's two inches below
- 9:44your navel. It's a beautiful, radiant golden ball is warm.
- 9:52Sure power centre.
- 9:54And this power centre is here to magnetise any worries thought
- 10:00That's concerns, any thoughts and concerns any to dues this
- 10:07all getting magnetised down to the golden ball feel yourself,
- 10:11your centre of gravity dropping down into the golden ball and
- 10:17your mind emptying this power centres magnetising. Any
- 10:25concerns? Beautiful, feel yourself calm. And then go ahead
- 10:36and take another deep breath and grab your phone, opening your
- 10:39eyes. And now put your phone up so that it's you could see your
- 10:46eyes. There's not too far but you are with yourself. Genuine
- 10:53eye contact. Just say hi. Hello there. It's good to see you.
- 11:05It's been a while I see you. I really see you. I see that you
- 11:20are doing the best that you can. You're working so hard. Even
- 11:29when it's hard, even when it's taught you're tired. Even when
- 11:34you're uncertain of what to do. I see you you're doing the best
- 11:42that you can. And I am sorry if I've been so hard on you. I'm
- 11:53sorry if I've been so hard on you. You are a great leader.
- 12:04Your voice matters. Your opinions matter. You're here to
- 12:14make a difference. You're a confident leader. I am proud of
- 12:23you. I forgive you. I forgive you for go ahead and fill in the
- 12:35blanks. I forgive you for
- 12:43I can commit to you that commit to you that
- 12:55and take another deep inhale and exhale go ahead and put your
- 13:04phone down
- 13:10right now you could be experiencing many different
- 13:13emotions. Some sad, some resistance questions, what is
- 13:23that some of you may feel comforted. Joyful, peace. No
- 13:33matter what emotion you're feeling. They're all welcome.
- 13:38They're all respected. And that exercise alone can rework that
- 13:48nervous system. So often. We're busy doing so many things for
- 13:54other people. Establishing a genuine connection with
- 14:00yourself. And really giving yourself what your heart needs
- 14:12is one of the most effective ways that that you can be that
- 14:18you can do something fast as a leader to make huge shifts. So I
- 14:25highly encourage that you use that technique every day because
- 14:28you're looking in the mirror every day. And many people when
- 14:32they're looking into mirror everyday guess what we're doing
- 14:34subconsciously Oh, look at my thighs. Oh look at my eyes or my
- 14:41hair getting fat or too skinny. Like that's what we
- 14:48subconsciously say to ourselves in the mirror. And when you do
- 14:53that you losing the connection of who you are and In order to
- 15:00be a powerful leader ready to be seen in the spotlight, you need
- 15:05to work through all of that and accept ourselves. And so that
- 15:12mirror exercise will help you round out and start to accept
- 15:19your own eyes. And when you except your own eyes for both
- 15:22your strengths, PHONER abilities or perceived weaknesses perceive
- 15:26brokenness except your whole self truly feel good and
- 15:33comfortable in your skin, you're able to go into the spotlight,
- 15:37or I want you to go in the spotlight, even if you're
- 15:39uncomfortable, but at least you're you're feeling one step
- 15:42closer. And now, we'll Melinda how you might ask, How do I do
- 15:50this? While I'm delivering a presentation, I've got all of
- 15:54these notes. I got to cover so many different points. How do I
- 15:59go and speak from my heart and speak from my truth when the
- 16:03organisation the manager wants me to cover ABCD what I have
- 16:08noticed, when people start to try to think about what they
- 16:14need to say, or remember what they need to say, they either
- 16:16start to memorise, or they're up in their head, because they're
- 16:21so worried that they might forget a fact they're so worried
- 16:24that they are not going to say the right thing. What that tells
- 16:30me is that then you're really not connected with yourself, and
- 16:34you're disconnected with the audience. There's a simple
- 16:40framework that I'm going to share with you that I found I've
- 16:44studied many different speeches. And this is the same framework
- 16:50that most compelling speeches use. So just knowing this
- 16:55framework, will save you so much time from rehearsing from having
- 17:01to memorise your script, from having to from in fear from
- 17:05forgetting. Ready? So this is the same framework that I've
- 17:11used today on this presentation. And that is why don't need
- 17:16notes. And imagine the freedom of not needing notes just
- 17:21because you know, the framework. I think most people when they do
- 17:24their speech they want they memorise a bullet. I think
- 17:27people have let go scripts. But the bullets now I want you to
- 17:32organise into a framework? No, it's called car. C stands for
- 17:41context. The next C stands for challenge action results. Put
- 17:49that into your presentation, this framework, and you will be
- 17:53free from ever forgetting. You will be free from ever needing
- 17:58to memorise a script, you will be free from losing that
- 18:03connection, you're gonna get back into the connection, you're
- 18:05gonna get back into the present moment. So khokhar context, what
- 18:10am I talking about? Today I'm talking to and the earlier on, I
- 18:14talked about establishing a connection, I talked about what
- 18:17it is. And I talk about the challenges the next C's
- 18:20challenges. Most people don't establish connection
- 18:23effectively, they're not bringing their whole self.
- 18:26That's a challenge. Here's what I want you to do an action, look
- 18:31at your own mirror, look at your own eyes in the mirror. And then
- 18:35now go into the results. When you can do this, you will be
- 18:39free from your script, you will be free from having to forget,
- 18:46you're going to be free from memorising and rehearsing hour
- 18:50upon hour upon hour. So having that framework, you just know
- 18:56where you're at, you know where you're going. It's like a map.
- 19:01And then you don't have to worry where every single point on the
- 19:05map is that you are, you're just you have the general direction
- 19:09and that's all you need. And then the rest is your focus on
- 19:13being present. Because that is what your audience needs
- 19:18establishing a connection. You want to spend majority of your
- 19:22energy being so focused and present in the moment. Allowing
- 19:29yourself the freedom to speak from your heart. Speak from
- 19:33genuineness and allow yourself to get feedback from the
- 19:37audience. So you can pivot at any moment. And allowing
- 19:42yourself to just be you and the truth of who you are knowing
- 19:49that you have everything that you can that you're equipped.
- 19:53You're equipped with all the right information. And imagine
- 19:57feeling that sense of I said everything that I needed to say,
- 20:02I did not forget anything. I had a client, who she started
- 20:09working with me because in the beginning she she felt like
- 20:14nobody was listening to her. She wasn't heard. And then so she
- 20:19would end up speaking more, and including more informations,
- 20:23more examples, and, and probably over talking, because she didn't
- 20:28feel like she was heard. Right. And so when I walked through
- 20:32this whole framework with her, worked on helping her to get
- 20:37fully present, so that she could be with the audience. By the
- 20:42time she was finished, when we were done working with each
- 20:45other. She said, Melinda, I had my script, or I had my framework
- 20:48and, and by the time I was done, I actually started seeing more
- 20:52things, different things that I did not have planned, but I knew
- 20:58it was enough. And that is what you want to leave every single
- 21:01presentation with is that you don't ruminate on, did I say the
- 21:07right thing? Did I not say the Did I miss something? You want
- 21:12to leave your presentations feeling like I knocked it out of
- 21:15the park. It landed with them. What I said was enough. Because
- 21:24I'm enough, I had went into it fully prepared with my
- 21:28framework. I knew where I was going, what direction I was
- 21:32going to take them. And even if they asked me a question that
- 21:36was different than when I plan, I was able to pivot. Because I'm
- 21:40not bound anymore to a script, I'm not bound to thoughts about
- 21:44I need to say this XYZ because someone told me so I had freedom
- 21:50in that. And that is why I can leave every single presentation,
- 21:56feeling like I knocked it out of the park feeling like it was
- 21:59just what needed to be said in the moment. And I left them
- 22:05feeling inspired, ready to act motivated. And that is when the
- 22:11team corrals, we have synergy. Because the communication was so
- 22:17streamlined. There was flow, there was an energy there. And
- 22:23that is what we need to do with our communication. I think more
- 22:26often than not, we think that communication is not that
- 22:30important, or I'll figure it out. Communication fitness.
- 22:35Moving into flow requires that you come back to these episodes
- 22:39every week, and tune in and adjust and build that muscle. So
- 22:45it continues to improve and continues to strengthen.
- 22:51So today, we talked about how to establish a genuine connection,
- 22:58a bond where both parties feel seen, heard, valued, a sense of
- 23:07safety, so you increase your influence. And we talked about
- 23:11how you could do that. One to One is first with yourself. But
- 23:18then more importantly, now that you've established a genuine
- 23:21connection with yourself, how do you do this with all eyes on
- 23:25you, lots of eyes on you. And not just that bringing your
- 23:31whole self in bringing you as who you are today. And owning
- 23:39that owning that you deserve to be in that spotlight. And when
- 23:43you fully believe that you lower your guard and you establish a
- 23:49connection with your audience, your audience lowers their
- 23:51guard. And that is when the bond forms. You increase your trust
- 24:00you increase the influence that you have. And therefore your
- 24:05team is motivated as synergize your your audience is excited
- 24:10and ready to act. And you're making a positive change in your
- 24:16organisation in your communities. And you're leading
- 24:21like that heart centred leader on a mission remember that
- 24:28remember, you mate you matter and you're here to make a
- 24:31difference and and so until next time, I'm your sister in flow.
- 24:38Take care
