- 0:19Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Pastor's Perspective. I'm your host, Brian Perez.
- 0:24Speaker 1: It is Thursday, and we are here live in the
- 0:27Speaker 1: studio to answer the questions you've got about God's word,
- 0:31Speaker 1: the Christian faith, just about anything that's on your mind.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Call in 888-564-6173, 888-564-61.
- 0:39Speaker 1: 173. Thanks for listening on K Wave, and, uh, you
- 0:43Speaker 1: can also watch us live streaming on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.
- 0:46Speaker 1: We also make each episode available as a podcast. If
- 0:50Speaker 1: you're listening on a podcast and wondering, how can I
- 0:53Speaker 1: ask my question? Well, we're here most weekdays, Monday through
- 0:56Speaker 1: Friday from 30 to 4 p.m. Pacific time. I say
- 0:59Speaker 1: most weekdays because
- 1:00Speaker 1: Like we're normally not here on holidays and certain other days,
- 1:04Speaker 1: but normally just the holidays. Otherwise, we are here to
- 1:07Speaker 1: answer the questions that you guys have. And to answer
- 1:10Speaker 1: those questions today, we've got Brian Broderson, the pastor Emeritus
- 1:14Speaker 1: of Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa, and Phil Metzger, the senior
- 1:17Speaker 1: pastor of Calvary Chapel San Diego. What's up guys? Good
- 1:21Speaker 1: to have you here. Going on? Good to be here.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Good to see you guys. Brian, you're looking, um, not
- 1:27Speaker 1: healthy yet.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Feel sick. Yes, I just, you know, you know how
- 1:34Speaker 1: it is, you, you kind of.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Go to bed and think, OK, tomorrow I'm gonna wake
- 1:38Speaker 1: up and I'm gonna be ready to go. And, uh,
- 1:42Speaker 1: that just has not happened yet.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Yeah, boomer, it's a bit of a, it's a, it's
- 1:48Speaker 1: a bit hard. I had that same thing, dude, and
- 1:50Speaker 1: it was like 2 weeks of, yeah, I remember when
- 1:53Speaker 1: you were sick a few weeks ago, 2 weeks, just
- 1:56Speaker 1: like you and you keep one day you're like, I
- 1:58Speaker 1: think I'm gonna be OK, and then you're like, no,
- 1:59Speaker 1: I'm not, I'm not OK. Yeah, and, and you know
- 2:03Speaker 1: how it is. I mean, it hasn't been the best
- 2:06Speaker 1: kind of sleeping experience, you know, so you're kind of.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Sore throat, you're coughing, you're, you know, you just can't,
- 2:13Speaker 1: can't get any rest, so.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Yeah, so it's a little crazy. We had a, we
- 2:18Speaker 1: had a sad occurrence in the family today, um.
- 2:24Speaker 1: One of my daughter's cats was hit by a car
- 2:27Speaker 1: and killed. No mittens. Such a great cat. Um, sweet,
- 2:36Speaker 1: a really good hunter too, boy, she could.
- 2:38Speaker 1: And she'd get the rats, the mice, the lizards, you know,
- 2:42Speaker 1: she'd get everything.
- 2:43Speaker 1: So yeah it's been a little bit of uh lamenting
- 2:47Speaker 1: I think a lizard was behind the wheel and uh
- 2:50Speaker 1: that's that's who did mittens in I bet you it
- 2:53Speaker 1: could have been you know yeah.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Because you know they're all after mittens because of the,
- 3:00Speaker 1: the great work that mittens does. What, how sad though. Yeah,
- 3:04Speaker 1: it is sad, you know, when, when pets die, it's,
- 3:07Speaker 1: it's sad and um.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Yeah,
- 3:11Speaker 1: It's hard.
- 3:13Speaker 1: 888-564-6173 is the number to call us today. You can
- 3:18Speaker 1: also send in your questions on Facebook, YouTube, no, not YouTube, Facebook, Instagram,
- 3:24Speaker 1: and Kwave.com, but we prefer to speak with you. So
- 3:27Speaker 1: if you're available to call in, please do. 888-564-6173. You know, I,
- 3:34Speaker 1: I heard a podcast somewhere was mentioned, um.
- 3:38Speaker 1: And it just reminded me that um the CGN podcast,
- 3:42Speaker 1: the newest episode, is that Mark Foreman, Phil, is that
- 3:47Speaker 1: what it is? It's Mark Foreman. It's the this is
- 3:49Speaker 1: the last one from the teaching that he just put out.
- 3:52Speaker 1: What a great one. Yeah, we had a conference back
- 3:54Speaker 1: in June and, uh, I think the, the different teachings
- 3:58Speaker 1: have been being aired, uh, each week on the CGM podcast.
- 4:02Speaker 1: But man, Mark's was just such a great.
- 4:07Speaker 1: I remember just, just thinking like, wow, this is so good. Um,
- 4:13Speaker 1: you know, so thankful for him and the wisdom of,
- 4:16Speaker 1: of so many years of pastoral ministry, you know, thinking
- 4:19Speaker 1: that he, he came to Calvary when he's like 16
- 4:22Speaker 1: or 17 years old and, uh, you know, his dad,
- 4:26Speaker 1: who ended up being a good friend of Pastor Chuck
- 4:28Speaker 1: and a board member, uh, Hugh Foreman, uh, his dad,
- 4:32Speaker 1: first thing he asked Chuck was like, something like, you know,
- 4:36Speaker 1: Uh, are, are you guys a cult? Are you, are
- 4:38Speaker 1: you feeding the kids drugs, you know, in the communion
- 4:40Speaker 1: or something like that?
- 4:43Speaker 1: So, you know, it's wild times back then, but.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Yeah, so anyway, such a good teaching, yeah, and it was,
- 4:50Speaker 1: you're right, it was just so sweet too, and you
- 4:52Speaker 1: just go, man, this guy is a real gift to
- 4:54Speaker 1: the church and to people, and, uh, so, so good
- 4:58Speaker 1: to have him. He does a lot for us in
- 5:00Speaker 1: San Diego, is a real, you know, a real great
- 5:02Speaker 1: gift to all of our churches in San Diego. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:06Speaker 1: So anyway, um, you know, for the podcast, it's, um.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Just the CGN podcast is available on your favorite, whether
- 5:17Speaker 1: it's Apple or um Spotify or whatever, you can, you
- 5:21Speaker 1: can pick it up there. So, check it out.
- 5:24Speaker 1: It's so good and they and there's some great new
- 5:27Speaker 1: ones coming out starting in January and um Daniel's been
- 5:30Speaker 1: working on some new stuff. It's gonna be great.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Now, if you don't have a favorite podcast place cause
- 5:38Speaker 1: you don't do podcasts, like me, I'm probably the only
- 5:41Speaker 1: person in the whole world, you can go to CGNMedia.org
- 5:45Speaker 1: and uh look for it there. The uh latest episode,
- 5:49Speaker 1: season 6, episode 16 with Mark Foreman. You can find
- 5:52Speaker 1: it there on CGNMedia.org. Cool, there it is.
- 5:57Speaker 1: 888-564-6173. Let's go right to the phones. Michael and oh,
- 6:03Speaker 1: I did that again, ra ra ra, OK.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Ah, there's that button that I have to push. I
- 6:09Speaker 1: forgot to push the button. OK.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Michael, hi. Welcome to Pastor's Perspective.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Greetings. How are you two doing? Well, there's 3 of
- 6:19Speaker 1: us actually, but hello. 3 of us, OK. Plus you. Uh,
- 6:25Speaker 1: I'm doing fine. I was going through a revelation and
- 6:28Speaker 1: I came across, uh,
- 6:31Speaker 1: Few verses, I wanted some clearance or, uh, something on it. Uh,
- 6:37Speaker 1: Revelation 17:14 says, Lord of Lords and King of kings,
- 6:43Speaker 1: and you go to 1916, and it is King of
- 6:47Speaker 1: Kings and Lord of Lords. Is there any significance to
- 6:51Speaker 1: the wording?
- 6:54Speaker 1: So 17144 says Lord of Lords, King of Kings, and
- 7:00Speaker 1: then a couple of chapters later, King of Kings and
- 7:03Speaker 1: Lord of Lords. Uh, no, I, I don't think there's
- 7:05Speaker 1: any significance to the reversal. I mean, it essentially is
- 7:08Speaker 1: saying the same thing, so I think that it's just
- 7:12Speaker 1: You know, just
- 7:14Speaker 1: Putting one in front of the other on one occasion
- 7:16Speaker 1: and the other in front. I mean, you know, Lord is,
- 7:20Speaker 1: is the curios. It's the, you know, it's the.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Um, kind of the New Testament title for God and
- 7:28Speaker 1: then King of Kings, of course, um.
- 7:32Speaker 1: You know Jesus is the king over all the kings
- 7:35Speaker 1: of the earth, so.
- 7:37Speaker 1: What do you think, Michael?
- 7:40Speaker 1: Which one do you think the proper one would be?
- 7:43Speaker 1: Uh, I don't think either one, I don't think there's
- 7:45Speaker 1: a proper versus an improper. I mean, I think for
- 7:48Speaker 1: me personally, rolling off the tongue, King of Kings and
- 7:51Speaker 1: Lord of Lords rolls off a little bit. Is it
- 7:54Speaker 1: because of that song we used to sing? It definitely
- 7:56Speaker 1: is the song. I was about to say that it's
- 7:59Speaker 1: definitely the, the song King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Glory Hallelujah, yeah, yeah, yeah, um, yeah, so for me
- 8:07Speaker 1: that's just like I said, it just rolls off the
- 8:09Speaker 1: tongue better, but, um, you know.
- 8:12Speaker 1: I mean it's, it's, it says both, so it's not,
- 8:15Speaker 1: there's not one that's better than the other. Yeah, Phil,
- 8:18Speaker 1: any thoughts? No, no, it's, yeah, I agree. All right, Michael,
- 8:22Speaker 1: thank you for your phone call today here on Pastor's Perspective.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Thanks for listening there in Cyprus on Kwave. 888-564-6173 is
- 8:32Speaker 1: the number. Now we'll talk to Tanya in Loma Linda. Hello, Tanya,
- 8:36Speaker 1: how can we help you?
- 8:39Speaker 1: Hi, good afternoon, pastors. Um, first of all, I'd like
- 8:42Speaker 1: to just say, um, I'm so sorry to hear about your,
- 8:46Speaker 1: your family's cat. Um, was it Pastor Brian? What was it? Yes, yes. OK, I,
- 8:51Speaker 1: I'm really sorry to hear about that. Um, it is
- 8:55Speaker 1: very painful to lose, um, to lose a pet. It's,
- 8:59Speaker 1: it's their family members as well, so I, I'm really
- 9:02Speaker 1: sorry to hear about that, especially the way that you
- 9:04Speaker 1: guys lost me.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you. OK, no, I'm so sorry, but anyway,
- 9:11Speaker 1: thank you for taking my call today. Um, I was
- 9:15Speaker 1: calling because I have a question in hopes that I
- 9:18Speaker 1: could get some guidance on the voting, um.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Voting in general. Um, this is, of course, this is
- 9:27Speaker 1: not my first time voting, but I, um, as the
- 9:31Speaker 1: years go by, I am becoming more and more conscientious
- 9:35Speaker 1: of the way that I vote, um, which we all should,
- 9:38Speaker 1: especially as believers, but this time around, I want to
- 9:43Speaker 1: make sure that I am making the right decisions in
- 9:47Speaker 1: my voting. Um, and I know, yes, we are to
- 9:50Speaker 1: vote the Bible, but I mean,
- 9:52Speaker 1: Really, what does that mean with all of the different
- 9:55Speaker 1: propositions and the measures and just with everything? How do
- 9:59Speaker 1: we as believers vote responsibly? Yeah, Phil Metzger, what do
- 10:04Speaker 1: you tell Tanya?
- 10:05Speaker 1: Yeah, Tanya, it's a great question. It's coming up quite
- 10:08Speaker 1: a bit. I'm surprised actually we haven't fielded more of these.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Maybe you guys have on other days and I'm just
- 10:13Speaker 1: missing it, but
- 10:15Speaker 1: Um, you know, you ask like 10 pastors their thoughts
- 10:18Speaker 1: on this, you'll get like 14 answers. So just so
- 10:21Speaker 1: you know, um, just because, you know, we all have a,
- 10:25Speaker 1: you know, I mean, like we, we're all aware of
- 10:27Speaker 1: the fact that voting didn't exist in the Bible days, um,
- 10:31Speaker 1: you know, they were, they lived under Caesar, at least
- 10:34Speaker 1: in the New Testament, under Pharaoh, and a lot of
- 10:37Speaker 1: the Old Testament.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Um, the, the, the nice, uh, the interesting thing about
- 10:42Speaker 1: this current election, right, we're in an off, like it's
- 10:44Speaker 1: not a presidential, it's not as, like it's, it's kind
- 10:46Speaker 1: of more local and statewide and citywide and region-wide, and
- 10:51Speaker 1: that gives you an opportunity, um, to, you know, you
- 10:54Speaker 1: look at everything that's out there, you look at what's relevant. Well,
- 10:57Speaker 1: let me start with this, you really gotta tune out
- 11:00Speaker 1: all the national, um,
- 11:03Speaker 1: Uh, events that have nothing to do with you. Like,
- 11:05Speaker 1: I'm not voting for who's gonna win in Michigan. I
- 11:09Speaker 1: have nothing to do with that. I live in San Diego, California,
- 11:12Speaker 1: so I wanna center myself not in the social media world,
- 11:16Speaker 1: but looking at the ballots, reading over what's being put
- 11:19Speaker 1: out there, and, um, what is voting like Christian mean?
- 11:22Speaker 1: It means like, you know, there's a lot of people
- 11:25Speaker 1: that are gonna tell you what that means, right? We
- 11:26Speaker 1: usually center around a few things, but there's so much
- 11:29Speaker 1: that you gotta consider.
- 11:30Speaker 1: I really think if you, you know, if you, if
- 11:32Speaker 1: you love the Lord, you ask the Lord for wisdom,
- 11:35Speaker 1: you look at the issues, and you vote. And then
- 11:38Speaker 1: you remember you're doing that more as an American than
- 11:41Speaker 1: you are as a Christian. I know everybody's gonna get
- 11:43Speaker 1: mad at me for saying that, but like, these are
- 11:45Speaker 1: American things. Who's the mayor of my city is more
- 11:49Speaker 1: American than it is Christian? And I, I know we
- 11:51Speaker 1: wanna believe it could be more Christian, but it's not.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Neither one of them are the Christian vote. They're the
- 11:56Speaker 1: American choices I have in San Diego. And
- 12:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna pick somebody who I think would do a
- 12:02Speaker 1: good job representing our people down here, and, um, and
- 12:06Speaker 1: then I'll sleep just fine at night. So, look at
- 12:08Speaker 1: the ballots, look at the, um, you know, look, you know,
- 12:11Speaker 1: do you wanna pay more in taxes for that thing?
- 12:13Speaker 1: Do you not wanna pay more taxes? These aren't like
- 12:15Speaker 1: always Christian, sometimes it's just American. You just gotta pick it,
- 12:19Speaker 1: have a good conscience before God and vote.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Now I don't live in San Diego either, so I
- 12:24Speaker 1: don't know who's running for mayor, but if one of
- 12:26Speaker 1: the people running for mayor was a Christian or claimed
- 12:30Speaker 1: to be a Christian, would that be an automatic yes
- 12:33Speaker 1: vote for that person? I would say no. And actually
- 12:36Speaker 1: in my area, one of the guys is a Christian,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and we know him quite well.
- 12:41Speaker 1: But you know what, that, that shouldn't just be right
- 12:44Speaker 1: away because, you know, you, you don't, what if I
- 12:46Speaker 1: don't know him and he's just saying he's Christian, you
- 12:48Speaker 1: still gotta look at people, you know, if you're able
- 12:51Speaker 1: to take the time, you look at the two people running,
- 12:53Speaker 1: maybe one's not a Christian, but they're gonna be very
- 12:55Speaker 1: good for the community, because guess what, Christian value is
- 12:59Speaker 1: not on the ballot for mayor in my area, that's not.
- 13:02Speaker 1: It's, he's gonna decide if a park gets built or not.
- 13:05Speaker 1: He's gonna decide, you know, he, he's not deciding the
- 13:08Speaker 1: moral values of our community. He is deciding how we
- 13:11Speaker 1: spend our money and um our tax money and the
- 13:15Speaker 1: civic issues. So, it's a really convoluted thing, boy, it's
- 13:18Speaker 1: real tough. I, I'm, I'm sorry for American Christians. This
- 13:21Speaker 1: is a tough thing because you wanna vote right, but
- 13:24Speaker 1: it's not always that simple as right and wrong.
- 13:28Speaker 1: What do you think, Tanya?
- 13:30Speaker 1: I say amen to that. Um, that, that gives me
- 13:33Speaker 1: a lot more clarification. Um, I have always thought that, OK, well,
- 13:40Speaker 1: if they're a Christian, then I should automatically vote that way,
- 13:45Speaker 1: you know, um, that has always been, um, what has
- 13:49Speaker 1: leaned me to the right or to the left, and, um,
- 13:53Speaker 1: what you're saying makes a whole lot of sense, and, um.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Thank you. I, I, I thank you for that. I,
- 14:00Speaker 1: I got a lot of clarification from that answer.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Awesome. Can we just keep Tanya on for the whole show, guys?
- 14:06Speaker 1: That just, you know, just made me feel so good.
- 14:09Speaker 1: I just need her around my life now. Yes, well,
- 14:11Speaker 1: that's a blessing because you're gonna get a lot of
- 14:14Speaker 1: hate after that answer. So Tanya's given you, I'm waiting
- 14:18Speaker 1: for it, and just tell those haters, hey, Tanya liked
- 14:21Speaker 1: my answer. That's all that matters. And it was her question.
- 14:24Speaker 1: So you don't know, and I'm gonna say, you know,
- 14:27Speaker 1: when they hate, I'm gonna say you can reach out
- 14:29Speaker 1: to me at echoesofmercy.com and uh.
- 14:34Speaker 1: All right, now come on, um.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it, I, I just wanted to add a couple
- 14:41Speaker 1: of thoughts to it. But I think Phil's was a
- 14:43Speaker 1: great answer. And I'm glad, uh, Tanya was happy with it. Um, I,
- 14:48Speaker 1: I do think, you know, we do live in a
- 14:50Speaker 1: very activist time. And I think, um, what I would
- 14:54Speaker 1: be careful of, and especially, you know, depending on, you,
- 14:59Speaker 1: you know, there's measures, of course, and then there are
- 15:02Speaker 1: people that are, you know, running for various offices. And
- 15:04Speaker 1: I think, you know, if you
- 15:06Speaker 1: If you get an activist kind of a person in there, um,
- 15:10Speaker 1: you know, say it's a mayor or something like that, you,
- 15:12Speaker 1: you could invite some trouble into your city. So, I
- 15:15Speaker 1: would say you want to be wise on, on when
- 15:18Speaker 1: it comes to that, you know, what is their agenda?
- 15:20Speaker 1: What are they really all about?
- 15:22Speaker 1: Um, and, and, you know, there's a lot of that
- 15:24Speaker 1: out there today, so, um.
- 15:28Speaker 1: But
- 15:30Speaker 1: Uh, you know, there is no, you know, like the
- 15:33Speaker 1: original question Tanya had was, how do you vote the
- 15:36Speaker 1: Bible or how do you vote biblically? And, and like
- 15:40Speaker 1: you said, Phil, I mean, there's no,
- 15:42Speaker 1: You know, in the context of the Bible, there was
- 15:45Speaker 1: not a democratic thing where you voted for anything. It was, um,
- 15:50Speaker 1: you know, under empires and so forth. So, um, so
- 15:54Speaker 1: I think, you know, you're biblically informed.
- 15:57Speaker 1: As a Christian, and then you go with um what is.
- 16:03Speaker 1: You know, what you've uh taken in from the word
- 16:06Speaker 1: of God as, you know, right and wrong and things
- 16:08Speaker 1: like that. But, you know, like you said, Phil, and
- 16:11Speaker 1: I'll I'll jump in it with you. Um, I know
- 16:14Speaker 1: of a situation where there is a Christian on a
- 16:20Speaker 1: particular ballot running against a non-Christian and, um, I don't
- 16:25Speaker 1: think the non-Christian is probably a great idea, but I
- 16:28Speaker 1: don't think the Christian is any better of an idea. So.
- 16:31Speaker 1: So, you know, sometimes you're between a rock and a
- 16:33Speaker 1: hard place. And uh, but like you said, just because
- 16:36Speaker 1: a person's, and you know, how many times have we
- 16:38Speaker 1: heard that a person is a Christian and then they
- 16:40Speaker 1: get voted in and then they say and do stuff,
- 16:42Speaker 1: you're like, wait, I thought I thought that person was
- 16:44Speaker 1: a Christian. Um, or because they're a Christian, you think, oh, well,
- 16:49Speaker 1: You know, they shouldn't do that because a Christian wouldn't
- 16:51Speaker 1: do that. But you forget that, uh, you know, a
- 16:54Speaker 1: person has been elected to represent all of the people,
- 16:58Speaker 1: not just a, you know, a group of people, a
- 17:01Speaker 1: small group of people, which would be the believers. So
- 17:04Speaker 1: there does have to be within the political sphere, there
- 17:07Speaker 1: has to be the recognition that
- 17:09Speaker 1: You know, sometimes politicians are going to do things that
- 17:12Speaker 1: you as a Christian don't like. Uh, but they might
- 17:16Speaker 1: do other things that you as a Christian do like. So,
- 17:19Speaker 1: you know, I think common sense governing is really a
- 17:21Speaker 1: good
- 17:23Speaker 1: Um, you know, a way to think about it is, is,
- 17:26Speaker 1: are their ideas crazy or do they make sense?
- 17:34Speaker 1: Excuse me. Tanya, thank you for your phone call today
- 17:36Speaker 1: on Pastor's Perspective. Now we'll talk to Danny in Riverside.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Who called 888-564-6173. What's your question, Danny?
- 17:46Speaker 1: Yes, so my question is, uh, Muslims are saying that, uh,
- 17:51Speaker 1: Muhammad is in the Hebrew Bible. What can you tell
- 17:56Speaker 1: me about that?
- 17:58Speaker 1: Is Muhammad in the Christian Bible? or do they give
- 18:01Speaker 1: you references or anything? What are they saying? They said
- 18:03Speaker 1: he was in the Hebrew Bible. Um, um, well, I
- 18:08Speaker 1: think it had to do with, um, like, um, like
- 18:11Speaker 1: when Jesus said that they're sending, uh, like we believe
- 18:14Speaker 1: the Holy Spirit is coming, right? He said, cause he
- 18:17Speaker 1: says so, but they got Muhammad in there somehow, you know. Mhm.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Ah, yeah, some Muslims would say that, um, you know,
- 18:28Speaker 1: the references to
- 18:30Speaker 1: The Picletus, the, you know, Jesus says, I'm gonna send
- 18:33Speaker 1: you another comforter or helper, um, and of course he's
- 18:37Speaker 1: referring to the Holy Spirit, but some, some Muslim apologists
- 18:40Speaker 1: would say, oh, that's a, that's talking about Muhammad. Um, well,
- 18:44Speaker 1: it's clearly not because Jesus tells you who he's talking about. He's,
- 18:47Speaker 1: he says, I'm gonna send you another comforter, the Holy
- 18:51Speaker 1: Spirit who will be with you. Uh, so he defines
- 18:53Speaker 1: for us who he's sending.
- 18:55Speaker 1: And, uh, Muhammad is not in the scriptures anywhere other
- 19:01Speaker 1: than under the category of false prophets because that's what
- 19:05Speaker 1: he is. Um, you know, the New Testament makes it
- 19:07Speaker 1: clear that Jesus is, uh, the ultimate fulfillment of all
- 19:11Speaker 1: prophecy and anyone, you know, coming after him that would
- 19:14Speaker 1: contradict him would not be a true prophet, but would by,
- 19:19Speaker 1: you know, just very definition be a false prophet.
- 19:23Speaker 1: What do you think, Danny?
- 19:25Speaker 1: Yeah, cause um I saw that they were, that they
- 19:28Speaker 1: even say that uh that he's gonna intercede for us.
- 19:32Speaker 1: It's not gonna be Jesus. Muhammad is gonna be the
- 19:35Speaker 1: one that's gonna intercede for us with God. And I
- 19:38Speaker 1: went like, what?
- 19:41Speaker 1: Yeah, well, again, you know, this is.
- 19:44Speaker 1: A lot of this stuff, of course, is just, you know,
- 19:48Speaker 1: made up to
- 19:51Speaker 1: Accommodate uh certain people and ideas and and so forth. So,
- 19:57Speaker 1: That's why it's good to know your Bible because you
- 20:00Speaker 1: can just say, wait, no, I, that's not the case.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Phil, did you have anything to add?
- 20:07Speaker 1: All right, well, good stuff. Well, Danny, thanks for calling
- 20:10Speaker 1: us at 888-564-6173. You know, I am, um, almost finished
- 20:16Speaker 1: with a book that I was super excited about, um.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Uh, it, it being released, it's by, um.
- 20:24Speaker 1: A, a man named Simon Sebag Montefiore, and he's a
- 20:28Speaker 1: great historian. I've read a number of his books, but he,
- 20:31Speaker 1: he wrote a book recently called The Cauldron, and it's
- 20:35Speaker 1: a history of the Middle East, uh, from about 1900, uh,
- 20:39Speaker 1: up to today.
- 20:41Speaker 1: And it is so absolutely fascinating. And I was telling
- 20:46Speaker 1: Cheryl today, I said, you know, it's interesting, really, well, you,
- 20:49Speaker 1: you know, you look at Islam and Islam is hard
- 20:52Speaker 1: to pin down in a lot of ways because there's
- 20:54Speaker 1: so many variations of it. And throughout much of the
- 20:57Speaker 1: history of the Middle East, you know, Islam is almost
- 21:00Speaker 1: used by these various leaders as it's a tool for power. Uh,
- 21:07Speaker 1: they don't necessarily abide by it.
- 21:09Speaker 1: They probably don't even really truly believe in it except
- 21:13Speaker 1: they believe in the parts that give them the ability
- 21:15Speaker 1: to control people. And so it's pretty fascinating to see
- 21:19Speaker 1: these different kingdoms, you know, the Hashemite kingdom and the,
- 21:24Speaker 1: the kingdoms of Iraq and, um, Egypt and, you know,
- 21:28Speaker 1: it's just, wow, it's really, it's, it's eye opening because
- 21:33Speaker 1: it makes you realize that that part of the world
- 21:36Speaker 1: has been a cauldron.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Not just since 1948, but of course 1948, you know,
- 21:43Speaker 1: ratcheted it up when Israel became a nation. But even
- 21:48Speaker 1: before and and even since among the, the, you know,
- 21:51Speaker 1: the non, the Arabic nations, they're not all Arabic, but
- 21:55Speaker 1: the I guess the Muslim nations, um, all kinds of
- 21:59Speaker 1: division and hostility and wars and things so.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Pretty fascinating read. I, I always find that history helps
- 22:07Speaker 1: kind of balance out the moment, you know, because we
- 22:11Speaker 1: tend to look at a moment and we think this
- 22:14Speaker 1: is a moment like no other moment. This is chaos
- 22:17Speaker 1: like there's never been chaos, and then you realize, oh no,
- 22:20Speaker 1: this has happened over and over again. So anyway, The
- 22:25Speaker 1: Cauldron by Simon Sebag Montefiore. That's the book you're talking about.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's not an easy read, so I'm not
- 22:32Speaker 1: necessarily 500 pages. That's his name should set you off.
- 22:36Speaker 1: You should know right away. Just trying to say the
- 22:38Speaker 1: guy's name is hard. And, and you know, he's a
- 22:41Speaker 1: descendant of Moses Montefiore, who was one of the early, uh, pioneers, um,
- 22:47Speaker 1: in the 1800s of, you know, he was a, he
- 22:49Speaker 1: was a, um.
- 22:52Speaker 1: A wealthy, uh, man who was financing a Jewish return to, uh,
- 22:59Speaker 1: to the land back in the 1800s. 0, that Moses. OK,
- 23:02Speaker 1: I know who you're talking about now. Oh, how fun
- 23:04Speaker 1: is that? Yeah, yeah, it's good. And, you know, he
- 23:06Speaker 1: wrote the book, uh, Jerusalem, uh, uh, A History, which
- 23:10Speaker 1: is my, my favorite book on the subject. He did
- 23:13Speaker 1: such a great job with it, yeah.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Very good. 888-564-6173. Here's a question that was submitted online
- 23:22Speaker 1: through the pastor's perspective Facebook Messenger comes to us from
- 23:27Speaker 1: Christy in Somerville, South Carolina. She wants to know who is, yeah, Somerville, Somerville.
- 23:35Speaker 1: You familiar with that? Is that where that's, that's, that's where, that's, yes,
- 23:39Speaker 1: I just knew it was South Carolina. I forgot what, uh,
- 23:42Speaker 1: what city it was. OK, so do you know Christy?
- 23:45Speaker 1: Uh, no, I was gonna say not, not yet, not yet,
- 23:48Speaker 1: not yet. So yeah, you go to the supermarket or
- 23:51Speaker 1: something and say, are you Christy? But, uh, she wants
- 23:53Speaker 1: to know who is the prince in the final chapters
- 23:55Speaker 1: of Ezekiel.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Who is the prince in the final chapters of Ezekiel, um.
- 24:04Speaker 1: There's not certainty on who it is. Um, it's a
- 24:08Speaker 1: Davidic prince, some.
- 24:11Speaker 1: You know,
- 24:12Speaker 1: Some see it's interesting. I mean, some people actually see
- 24:16Speaker 1: it as David himself who, you know, in his resurrected
- 24:19Speaker 1: state that he is the prince. Um, some would see
- 24:22Speaker 1: it as Jesus, the Messiah, but then the, the problem
- 24:25Speaker 1: is there that the Lord Himself is sitting on the
- 24:29Speaker 1: throne in the temple, which I think that's clearly the who,
- 24:34Speaker 1: who Jesus would be.
- 24:35Speaker 1: There, so it's not certain. I, I don't know, Phil,
- 24:39Speaker 1: you know, Doctor, Doctor, Doctor, Doctor Phil, same answer. Um,
- 24:44Speaker 1: I definitely can't be the Messiah, but in terms of, yeah,
- 24:47Speaker 1: is it a resurrected David or who is it? Don't know,
- 24:50Speaker 1: don't know. Interesting though, for sure. Yeah, I mean, it
- 24:53Speaker 1: seems like it's a, you know, whoever it is, it's a,
- 24:57Speaker 1: a connection with the house of David.
- 25:01Speaker 1: All right, Kirsty, thanks for sending in your question, and
- 25:03Speaker 1: here's one that was submitted by Robert in Duarte about
- 25:06Speaker 1: Revelation 2:9, which reads, those who say they are Jews
- 25:10Speaker 1: but are not, they are a synagogue of Satan. So
- 25:14Speaker 1: Robert asks, what does Jesus mean by calling them a
- 25:17Speaker 1: synagogue of Satan?
- 25:20Speaker 1: Well, I think that's like metaphor, not, it's, yeah, it's
- 25:24Speaker 1: metaphor here. The synagogue of Satan, they are, um, I
- 25:27Speaker 1: know your works. I'm just reading the verse here. You
- 25:29Speaker 1: are rich. I know the blasphemy of those who say
- 25:31Speaker 1: they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue
- 25:33Speaker 1: of Satan, so he's just using that to say that
- 25:35Speaker 1: it's demonic. It's a, it's like a metaphor for saying
- 25:38Speaker 1: something is.
- 25:39Speaker 1: These people are demonic
- 25:41Speaker 1: That's the, that's the phrasing.
- 25:43Speaker 1: All right, that was easy, Robert. Thank you for sending
- 25:47Speaker 1: in that question. Let's see what time is it. OK,
- 25:50Speaker 1: we got a little bit of time for the break.
- 25:52Speaker 1: I'm gonna read a couple of questions sent in from
- 25:53Speaker 1: Archie in Roanoke, Virginia. Uh, first one is, uh, about
- 25:59Speaker 1: a doctrine called the serpent seed doctrine, where the original
- 26:03Speaker 1: sin was actually a literal sexual interaction between Eve and
- 26:07Speaker 1: the serpent that created an evil bloodline.
- 26:11Speaker 1: I met somebody that was just so passionate about it
- 26:13Speaker 1: and made it sound almost legit. I definitely don't believe
- 26:17Speaker 1: it to be true, but just wondering if you could
- 26:20Speaker 1: speak on any insight and facts you might have about
- 26:24Speaker 1: the serpent seed doctrine.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Well, all we know about Eve and the serpent is
- 26:31Speaker 1: told to us in Genesis chapter 3.
- 26:35Speaker 1: So anything
- 26:37Speaker 1: That's not there
- 26:39Speaker 1: Uh
- 26:41Speaker 1: I
- 26:43Speaker 1: is, is not real. So, I, I, and it's clearly
- 26:48Speaker 1: in the Genesis account. I mean, it's not.
- 26:52Speaker 1: There's no sex involved, you know, that's clear. I mean,
- 26:56Speaker 1: You know, there's there's always been a a a sort
- 26:59Speaker 1: of a perverted.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Thing around um.
- 27:03Speaker 1: You know, Eve and the fall and, you know, the
- 27:06Speaker 1: idea of sex and all of that, which is, there's
- 27:08Speaker 1: just absolutely nothing in the biblical text to support that. So,
- 27:11Speaker 1: so anything like that, you just have to say no,
- 27:15Speaker 1: it's just if you, if you take the scripture as
- 27:17Speaker 1: the authority, then what the scripture says happened is what
- 27:20Speaker 1: happened and all of these other myths and things that
- 27:22Speaker 1: have grown up over the years and theories and ideas
- 27:24Speaker 1: and that are, that are proliferated through the, uh, internet.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Um, no, and, and it's, it's sad that somebody could
- 27:34Speaker 1: be so passionate about something that's so wrong as to
- 27:39Speaker 1: be persuasive, you know, hey, let me convert you to
- 27:43Speaker 1: my new faith that even the serpent had sex. Wow,
- 27:49Speaker 1: that's amazing. Let's follow that. What, what, you know, what
- 27:52Speaker 1: kind of craziness is that? So, Phil, got about a minute.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Well, I was gonna talk about how I believe, no,
- 27:59Speaker 1: I'm just kidding, uh, yeah, and I love what you
- 28:03Speaker 1: said there, Brian. I was thinking the same. I was
- 28:06Speaker 1: thinking it, but then the way you expressed it was
- 28:08Speaker 1: very good that if, if we take the Bible as authoritative, right,
- 28:11Speaker 1: that's what it comes down to. Like if you don't
- 28:13Speaker 1: take the Bible as authoritative, then you can just make
- 28:16Speaker 1: up all the stories you want. And let's be honest,
- 28:19Speaker 1: that I
- 28:19Speaker 1: The idea of the, of the serpent and Eve having sex,
- 28:22Speaker 1: it's like, it's like vampires and dragons and myths and,
- 28:25Speaker 1: you know, you can just make up whatever you want.
- 28:28Speaker 1: But for those of us who take the Bible seriously
- 28:30Speaker 1: and literally, then you're, you're kind of restrained to what
- 28:34Speaker 1: it says, and that's just the most utterly foolish stuff
- 28:37Speaker 1: out there.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Silliness, total silliness. Yes, indeed. All right, we're almost up
- 28:42Speaker 1: to the break. Let me read Archie's second question and
- 28:44Speaker 1: then we'll answer it when we return. And we also
- 28:47Speaker 1: want to talk to Margie, so Margie, don't hang up.
- 28:49Speaker 1: But Archie's other question is, um, I got into a
- 28:53Speaker 1: discussion with my new co-worker who was raised as a Mormon,
- 28:57Speaker 1: and even though she's not practicing, she still claims it was.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I was looking up scripture to try to justify their
- 29:04Speaker 1: belief of having multiple wives, apparently even juvenile wives, but
- 29:09Speaker 1: that's another topic. So just wondering if you can speak
- 29:11Speaker 1: to the key differences of Mormonism and Christianity, where they
- 29:15Speaker 1: stand with the Bible, any scriptures that can clarify design
- 29:20Speaker 1: and intention for marriage between one man.
- 29:23Speaker 1: And one wife. I did show her Genesis 2:24 about
- 29:26Speaker 1: leaving the parents to cling to the wife, but didn't
- 29:29Speaker 1: have time to really get deeper and don't know how
- 29:31Speaker 1: much I could have anyway with my limited knowledge. So
- 29:34Speaker 1: I said, um, I don't know, but I do know
- 29:36Speaker 1: some guys who do. That would be us, I guess.
- 29:40Speaker 1: On pastor's perspective. So, we'll answer that question when we return.
- 29:44Speaker 1: 888-564-6173 is the number to call us with your questions.
- 29:48Speaker 1: You've got about a half hour to call in and
- 29:50Speaker 1: speak with pastors Brian Broderson and Phil Metzger, 888-564-6173.
- 30:18Speaker 1: This is Pastor's perspective. 888-564-6173 is the number to call.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Still time for you to call in, and, uh, Margie,
- 30:26Speaker 1: you're gonna be our next call, but first we want
- 30:28Speaker 1: to finish up Archie. His basic question is, what are
- 30:31Speaker 1: the key differences between Mormonism and Christianity? So Phil, how
- 30:36Speaker 1: would you answer that?
- 30:38Speaker 1: Um, the differences, I mean, like, probably the most important
- 30:43Speaker 1: are theological differences. So we are, a, um, Christianity and
- 30:49Speaker 1: Mormonism are not the same. That is, it, the Mormon
- 30:52Speaker 1: religion is not a
- 30:54Speaker 1: You know, it derives some of its sourcing from Christianity
- 30:59Speaker 1: in the Bible, but it's not Christian.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Um, Mormonism holds to different scripture.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Uh, theologically they have different views of Jesus, they have
- 31:11Speaker 1: different views of Satan, they have different views of God,
- 31:14Speaker 1: they have different views about marriage, they have different views about, um, eternity. So,
- 31:22Speaker 1: I mean, on so many levels, you know, even the
- 31:24Speaker 1: point that they're bringing up about, you know, multiple wives.
- 31:28Speaker 1: That was, that's a, that was a Mormon doctrine, uh,
- 31:33Speaker 1: that I think was since changed because the American government
- 31:36Speaker 1: doesn't allow that. Again, uh, the other thing that people
- 31:39Speaker 1: maybe need to be reminded of that Mormonism is very
- 31:43Speaker 1: American centric, which is blows my mind how it's made
- 31:46Speaker 1: it around the world, but it's the teaching that that
- 31:50Speaker 1: that Jesus came to Joseph Smith in the Americas and
- 31:56Speaker 1: brought him further revelation.
- 31:58Speaker 1: And of course, of course, right, when man-made religion is involved,
- 32:01Speaker 1: as Brian said in the earlier question, um, freedom of,
- 32:06Speaker 1: you know, sexual relations seems to always follow where, where that,
- 32:10Speaker 1: you know, where you make up religion. So you can
- 32:12Speaker 1: have multiple wives and yep, the idea of, um, you know,
- 32:16Speaker 1: we see this in Islam and we see in Mormonism
- 32:17Speaker 1: of women or wives that were underage, polygamy and so on, um,
- 32:22Speaker 1: this is.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Maybe disputed or maybe they've um rejected that today, but
- 32:28Speaker 1: that was a part of Mormon doctrine. So, on every level,
- 32:31Speaker 1: the um Mormon religion is different from Christianity.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Anything to add, Brian?
- 32:38Speaker 1: Um, no, I mean, that was great. That's, that's covers
- 32:42Speaker 1: pretty much all of it. Uh, the only thing I
- 32:44Speaker 1: was gonna say though is it's really interesting and um
- 32:48Speaker 1: others have noted this, as particularly people who, you know,
- 32:53Speaker 1: are deeply involved in apologetics regarding Islam and um and Mormonism. They,
- 33:00Speaker 1: they recognize the incredible similarities between
- 33:04Speaker 1: Um, Islam and Mormonism, you know, all the way back
- 33:08Speaker 1: to the supposed revelation of Muhammad, you know, in the cave,
- 33:12Speaker 1: and then Joseph Smith with the tablets and, um, obviously
- 33:16Speaker 1: the end, you know, doctrines become different, but they're just
- 33:22Speaker 1: such an interesting parallel between the two.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Archie, thanks for sending in your questions through the pastor's
- 33:29Speaker 1: perspective Facebook page using Messenger. Now we'll go back to
- 33:32Speaker 1: the phones, 888-564-6173. Here's Margie in Riverside. Hey, Margie, what
- 33:38Speaker 1: did you want to ask Brian and Phil?
- 33:41Speaker 1: Hi, wondering, um, I have a friend that witnesses well
- 33:46Speaker 1: to friends or people in general. I want to witness,
- 33:50Speaker 1: but I'm afraid to get questions I can't answer. So
- 33:53Speaker 1: what other ways can you witness to people, win souls
- 33:56Speaker 1: for Christ?
- 33:59Speaker 1: Without, cause again, you're saying that you're afraid that you're
- 34:02Speaker 1: gonna get a question that you don't know how to answer.
- 34:06Speaker 1: I, I, my simple question is, I want to win
- 34:08Speaker 1: souls for Christ, but I don't know how to do it.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Other than, uh, you know, like you said, did you
- 34:14Speaker 1: know that the word says da da da da, and
- 34:15Speaker 1: I don't know how to do all that. So how,
- 34:17Speaker 1: what other way can I win souls for Christ? So
- 34:21Speaker 1: like without necessarily using the Bible, is that what you mean?
- 34:25Speaker 1: Yes, I'm not good at remembering verses and so forth
- 34:28Speaker 1: and that type of thing, and some of them want to, uh,
- 34:31Speaker 1: debate on like what about this or what about that,
- 34:33Speaker 1: and I know those answers off the top of my head.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Well, you know, uh, you, you do need to get
- 34:42Speaker 1: a few.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Verses under your belt, you know, you could, you could
- 34:48Speaker 1: commit a few verses to memory. Um, and, and that
- 34:51Speaker 1: would be helpful because, you know, when you're sharing the gospel,
- 34:54Speaker 1: you want to be sharing the truth about what God
- 34:56Speaker 1: has said.
- 34:58Speaker 1: So it's not just your opinion about things and when
- 35:01Speaker 1: you can bring a scripture to bear, um, that gives
- 35:05Speaker 1: you the support that you can back up what you're
- 35:08Speaker 1: saying because, well, you know, actually the Bible says this. So,
- 35:11Speaker 1: so there's a few passages that you, you will need
- 35:14Speaker 1: to kind of work on just committing yourself.
- 35:17Speaker 1: At least to a general, um, you know, like John 3:16,
- 35:21Speaker 1: for God so loved the world that He gave His
- 35:22Speaker 1: one and only Son, whoever believes in Him, you know,
- 35:25Speaker 1: something like that where you don't have to say exactly
- 35:27Speaker 1: word for word, but just the idea that, you know,
- 35:30Speaker 1: God gave His Son, um, because he loved the world and, um,
- 35:34Speaker 1: whoever believes in His Son is not going to perish
- 35:37Speaker 1: but have have everlasting life. But I, I think.
- 35:41Speaker 1: You know, in so many cases like I.
- 35:44Speaker 1: I love the story of the blind man in John
- 35:48Speaker 1: chapter 9 who was healed and he doesn't know anything.
- 35:52Speaker 1: He doesn't know, you know, he, he was blind his
- 35:56Speaker 1: whole life. He was born blind and now he can
- 35:58Speaker 1: see and that's his testimony. This is what I know.
- 36:03Speaker 1: I was blind and now I see and a guy
- 36:07Speaker 1: named Jesus is the one who did this for me.
- 36:10Speaker 1: And, you know, they wanted to grill him with all
- 36:12Speaker 1: kinds of questions and they wanted to know, you know,
- 36:18Speaker 1: where he got his theology and all of that. And he,
- 36:20Speaker 1: you know, he just said, look, this is, this is
- 36:21Speaker 1: my story. I'm just telling you my story. And so
- 36:24Speaker 1: I think that that is, I think it's always good to,
- 36:28Speaker 1: to have our story as a way of sharing because
- 36:33Speaker 1: it's something that you've experienced. God, God has done this
- 36:36Speaker 1: in your life. And so you're talking to somebody.
- 36:38Speaker 1: And, and it's not like rehearsed, like, hey, wait, let
- 36:41Speaker 1: me pull out these four verses and read them to you. Uh.
- 36:48Speaker 1: But it's more natural, you know, you're just telling the
- 36:51Speaker 1: story about what God's done in your life and then
- 36:52Speaker 1: you let them.
- 36:55Speaker 1: Respond
- 36:56Speaker 1: And if they respond with questions you don't know, you
- 36:59Speaker 1: just say, I'm not sure about that, uh, but I
- 37:01Speaker 1: can find out. So Phil, what do you think? You
- 37:04Speaker 1: can also give them our phone number 888-564-6173. We'll answer
- 37:08Speaker 1: their questions. Phil, there you go. Yeah, no, I love
- 37:11Speaker 1: that answer. I think, I think too many of us
- 37:13Speaker 1: have grown in the, like, um, we've seen like too
- 37:17Speaker 1: much of the, like, you know, the pastor or the
- 37:19Speaker 1: evangelist up there kind of in a monologue.
- 37:23Speaker 1: And that's, that's mass evangelism, but like personal relational evangelism
- 37:28Speaker 1: is com it's like conversation, it's relationship, um, you know, um,
- 37:33Speaker 1: I agree with you, Brian. You can't really, we can't,
- 37:36Speaker 1: it's really hard to share our faith with, especially for
- 37:40Speaker 1: our caller, if you're wanting to like grow and sharing
- 37:42Speaker 1: your faith, then you should absolutely commit yourself to growing
- 37:46Speaker 1: in the word of God. Like you, those two things
- 37:48Speaker 1: are gonna go hand in hand.
- 37:50Speaker 1: It's not like, oh, don't worry about that, just tell
- 37:52Speaker 1: your testimony. As Brian said, like the word is gonna
- 37:55Speaker 1: be so critical, you know, because questions that always come
- 37:58Speaker 1: up for all of us that ever talked to people
- 38:00Speaker 1: about Jesus, Questions that come up a lot are not,
- 38:03Speaker 1: it's not always like some deep, difficult, apologetic question.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Some difficult, you know, thing about the Bible, it's more like,
- 38:10Speaker 1: where does the, where do I have the right to
- 38:13Speaker 1: tell somebody that they need Jesus? Where does that even
- 38:15Speaker 1: come from? Is that my personal opinion, or is it
- 38:18Speaker 1: rooted in the scriptures? And so we want to be
- 38:20Speaker 1: able to, we want to be able to pull from
- 38:22Speaker 1: the scriptures.
- 38:24Speaker 1: And I think that like if you really have a
- 38:26Speaker 1: heart to want to grow and becoming a better like evangelist,
- 38:29Speaker 1: then learn to listen to people really well, learn to
- 38:32Speaker 1: listen to where they're really at, and, um, and then
- 38:35Speaker 1: everything that Brian said there was just great. I, I
- 38:38Speaker 1: couldn't agree more.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Does that uh help you, Margie?
- 38:43Speaker 1: Yes, and what another thing that just gave me an
- 38:46Speaker 1: idea is to carry my Bible and then I ask
- 38:48Speaker 1: them what is the situation that they're feeling or have
- 38:51Speaker 1: an issue with, and I'll pull it up under the
- 38:53Speaker 1: thing where they say anxiety, depression, or loneliness, and I'll
- 38:57Speaker 1: pull up the scripture and then share that with them. Yeah,
- 39:00Speaker 1: that's a great idea.
- 39:02Speaker 1: That is a really good idea. Yeah, I appreciate you guys. Well,
- 39:05Speaker 1: thank you. We appreciate you. Thanks for calling, Margie.
- 39:09Speaker 1: 888-564-6173. Let's talk to Blair in Corona. Got a question
- 39:15Speaker 1: about Catholicism. Go ahead, Blair. Thanks for calling.
- 39:19Speaker 1: Uh, no, thank you. I was in a conversation with
- 39:23Speaker 1: a friend of mine, and he asked, why do Catholics
- 39:27Speaker 1: baptize babies if in fact we are all judged on
- 39:31Speaker 1: our own, uh, works or sins, things of that nature.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Why would you baptize a child? And my response, of course,
- 39:40Speaker 1: is original sin, but again, his response is, but we're
- 39:44Speaker 1: only judged on our own.
- 39:47Speaker 1: So why would you still baptize a baby? I did
- 39:50Speaker 1: not have a good answer for that. I'm hoping you do. Well,
- 39:53Speaker 1: Pastor Brian was baptized as a baby, weren't you? A toddler,
- 39:57Speaker 1: a toddler. Oh, OK. I wasn't baptized as a baby,
- 40:01Speaker 1: but yeah, a toddler, 2 years old, maybe. Um, yeah, well,
- 40:05Speaker 1: just for clarification, Catholics aren't the only, uh, Christians who
- 40:09Speaker 1: believe in what we call infant baptism.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Uh, Presbyterians, Episcopalians, Lutherans, they also perform infant baptism, and
- 40:21Speaker 1: they have different ideas about, you know, what they're doing
- 40:24Speaker 1: with it. Of course, within Roman Catholicism, the idea is
- 40:28Speaker 1: that you are literally, you know, this is how you
- 40:30Speaker 1: become a Christian. You are being baptized and you're washing
- 40:33Speaker 1: away your original sin, and that's what's happening in your baptism, uh,
- 40:38Speaker 1: with the Protestant churches that do.
- 40:41Speaker 1: Um, baptize infants, they would see it a little bit differently,
- 40:46Speaker 1: not necessarily as a, a conversion moment or a moment
- 40:50Speaker 1: where your, your original sin is being washed away, but
- 40:53Speaker 1: more as a sort of a dedication of, of this
- 40:57Speaker 1: new little life, you know, to God.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Um
- 41:03Speaker 1: But the, the Bible.
- 41:07Speaker 1: I think teaches us that baptism is, I think an
- 41:13Speaker 1: easy way to understand it is um what baptism is,
- 41:16Speaker 1: it's believers baptism. So in other words, you have to
- 41:20Speaker 1: be able to
- 41:23Speaker 1: Understand the gospel to a certain extent and put your
- 41:28Speaker 1: faith in it and then your baptism is really, it's
- 41:33Speaker 1: like your public expression of your new identity in Jesus.
- 41:40Speaker 1: And so, um, you know, obviously an infant or a
- 41:44Speaker 1: toddler doesn't have the capacity to really know and understand
- 41:47Speaker 1: the gospel truth and to respond to it.
- 41:50Speaker 1: So, therefore, the baptism of of an infant, I, I
- 41:55Speaker 1: think is, um, I, I wouldn't say it's wrong in
- 42:00Speaker 1: the sense like, oh, it's horrible if you were baptized,
- 42:03Speaker 1: but I, I would say that it's not really biblically accurate, uh,
- 42:08Speaker 1: to do it.
- 42:11Speaker 1: What do you think, Blair?
- 42:14Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I, I completely agree. I think it is
- 42:17Speaker 1: an outwardly expression of my faith and belief in Jesus
- 42:21Speaker 1: as my Lord and Savior, and I believe exactly what
- 42:27Speaker 1: was said, that it's not wrong, but that it isn't biblical.
- 42:33Speaker 1: I couldn't find anything in my research, not although it
- 42:37Speaker 1: was done very limited and very quickly while I was
- 42:40Speaker 1: talking to him. I had no answer other than I don't.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Remember reading that in the Bible, right.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Yeah, great. No, thank you very much. Well, thank you
- 42:51Speaker 1: very much for calling us today at 888-564-6173.
- 42:56Speaker 1: And, and you know, the churches I mentioned, the Anglican
- 42:58Speaker 1: and the, um, the Lutheran and the Presbyterian, you know, all,
- 43:03Speaker 1: all of these churches go, they date back to the
- 43:06Speaker 1: Reformation period and the Reformation, of course, is the time
- 43:08Speaker 1: where there was a, a breakaway from Roman Catholicism, but
- 43:13Speaker 1: they retained, um, some of the practices of the church
- 43:17Speaker 1: were retained by the Protestants and, and one of them
- 43:20Speaker 1: was the infant baptism.
- 43:23Speaker 1: All right, here's another question that was submitted online. This
- 43:25Speaker 1: one is from Chris who sent this in through the
- 43:29Speaker 1: pastor's perspective Facebook page using messenger. And, uh, it's a
- 43:34Speaker 1: question we kind of get all the time, but we
- 43:35Speaker 1: get new listeners all the time too, so somebody might
- 43:38Speaker 1: be hearing this for the first time. When we die,
- 43:40Speaker 1: do we go to in, in, uh, start over. When
- 43:43Speaker 1: we die, do we go into a deep sleep or
- 43:46Speaker 1: do we go directly to heaven? Phil Metzger.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Yeah, the Bible tells us that once we're no longer here,
- 43:52Speaker 1: we are in the presence of God. And so as
- 43:55Speaker 1: a believer, we, we come into the presence of God.
- 43:58Speaker 1: There's no deep sleep, uh.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Descriptions in the Bible.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Um, there is a, there is this life, and then
- 44:07Speaker 1: there is the, the next life to come. And so, nothing,
- 44:12Speaker 1: there's no gap in between those things. So, it's a
- 44:14Speaker 1: great question, you know, um.
- 44:17Speaker 1: And um just the encouragement to people, you know, this
- 44:19Speaker 1: is why we always hear this in churches all around
- 44:21Speaker 1: the world, that like, we have this one life to live,
- 44:24Speaker 1: we need to make that really count, and then, and
- 44:26Speaker 1: then one day when we're no longer in this life,
- 44:28Speaker 1: we're gonna hear the Lord, hopefully as we put our
- 44:31Speaker 1: faith in Christ, we're gonna hear the Lord say, well done,
- 44:33Speaker 1: good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Now, why is there even dispute about that? Why do
- 44:40Speaker 1: people think that maybe we do go into a deep sleep?
- 44:43Speaker 1: Some of that's a theological perspective. I mean, I think
- 44:46Speaker 1: when you consider the Catholic, the Roman Catholic faith, and the, the,
- 44:50Speaker 1: the view of a purgatory, and then so from there,
- 44:54Speaker 1: there's other groups, and there might be some, I don't know,
- 44:57Speaker 1: I'm trying to think. I, there's no, I can't think
- 44:59Speaker 1: of any Protestant groups, Brian, do you know of any
- 45:01Speaker 1: that believe that?
- 45:03Speaker 1: Um, yeah, well, deep sleep, um,
- 45:09Speaker 1: The Seventh Day Adventists, I mean, you know, they're kind
- 45:14Speaker 1: of a.
- 45:15Speaker 1: Uh, fringe Protestant group. Um, I think they believe in
- 45:20Speaker 1: soul sleep. And, and I do think there are some
- 45:23Speaker 1: evangelicals that kind of get close to it, you know,
- 45:25Speaker 1: that they think that, um,
- 45:27Speaker 1: You know, to, when you, when you're absent from the body, you're,
- 45:32Speaker 1: you're with the Lord, but it's very ambiguous just exactly
- 45:37Speaker 1: what that means.
- 45:39Speaker 1: And um and I think probably a lot of people
- 45:45Speaker 1: just because the English New Testament uses the word sleep
- 45:51Speaker 1: sometimes in referring to death. So that's an easy one
- 45:56Speaker 1: to think, oh, well, we're asleep, you know, we must
- 45:58Speaker 1: go to sleep for a period of time. The sleep
- 46:01Speaker 1: is referring to the the body resting in the grave, uh,
- 46:06Speaker 1: but not to the spirit.
- 46:08Speaker 1: And my favorite one of those is Jesus saying, you know,
- 46:10Speaker 1: Lazarus is asleep. And then, you know, even his own
- 46:14Speaker 1: disciples being like, oh well, if he's asleep, let him rest, man,
- 46:16Speaker 1: leave him alone. And then, and then Jesus having to
- 46:18Speaker 1: be literal, guys, he's dead. That should have cleared up
- 46:23Speaker 1: the sleep and death thing right then. It should have, yeah.
- 46:27Speaker 1: Then there's the deep sleep that Adam fell upon or
- 46:30Speaker 1: that fell on him and, uh, all of a sudden
- 46:33Speaker 1: he wakes up with one less rib. But then, you know,
- 46:37Speaker 1: when Paul says to the Thessalonians, we shall not all
- 46:39Speaker 1: sleep but we shall be changed, um, or, or no, in, uh,
- 46:43Speaker 1: to the Corinthians, he says that, but then the other
- 46:45Speaker 1: one is, uh, the Thessalonian passage where he, he says, um,
- 46:49Speaker 1: we who are alive and remain, uh, you know, I
- 46:52Speaker 1: think there he's talking, he uses the term sleep as well.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Chris, thanks for your question sent in through the Pastor's
- 46:59Speaker 1: perspective Facebook page using messenger. Dave and Winchester, you're up
- 47:04Speaker 1: next with pastors Brian Broderson and Phil Metzger. What did
- 47:07Speaker 1: you want to know?
- 47:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I just had a question on when we testify or,
- 47:14Speaker 2: you know, I've met many Mormons that are very
- 47:17Speaker 2: Nice people, very polite, nice, kind people and all that.
- 47:21Speaker 2: But in testifying to them when they come to your
- 47:24Speaker 2: door and stuff, I'm wondering if, uh, Galatians 1:8 would
- 47:29Speaker 2: be the absolute truth that would show them, uh, prior
- 47:33Speaker 2: to Joseph Smith and Moroni, that scripture in Galatians 1:8
- 47:39Speaker 2: would be the strong, or maybe the strongest scripture to
- 47:42Speaker 2: give them to show them the error of that faith
- 47:46Speaker 2: or religion.
- 47:47Speaker 1: And let me just read that passage really quick for
- 47:49Speaker 1: anyone who doesn't have their Bible handy. Uh, Paul writes,
- 47:53Speaker 1: but even if we or an angel from heaven should
- 47:56Speaker 1: preach a gospel other than the one we preach to you,
- 47:58Speaker 1: let them be under God's curse. So how would you
- 48:01Speaker 1: use that verse, Dave, if someone came to your door? Well,
- 48:05Speaker 2: yeah, I would, uh, say that, uh, an angel came
- 48:10Speaker 2: according to Joseph Smith and gave him all this new gospel,
- 48:14Speaker 2: all this new direction.
- 48:16Speaker 2: And that was after the fact that God had already
- 48:19Speaker 2: said beware exactly of that experience.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Yeah
- 48:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and, and I'd say, Dave, of course, um, you
- 48:29Speaker 1: would think.
- 48:31Speaker 1: That if you just showed them that verse, they go,
- 48:34Speaker 1: oh gosh.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Oh, man, you're right. You know, we, we, we don't
- 48:38Speaker 1: want to follow a different gospel, but sadly, they don't because,
- 48:41Speaker 1: of course, there's a, you know, there's a deceptive, a
- 48:45Speaker 1: spiritually deceptive element that is here that, you know, kind
- 48:49Speaker 1: of captures a person's mind. And so, but, but it's
- 48:54Speaker 1: certainly a, a great passage that says exactly what, um,
- 49:00Speaker 1: you know, had Joseph Smith read it and taken it seriously,
- 49:03Speaker 1: he wouldn't have.
- 49:04Speaker 1: concocted this idea that he had a message from an angel.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Plus, isn't this verse in the Mormon Bible too, because
- 49:12Speaker 1: isn't it? I mean, they have all the same books
- 49:15Speaker 1: we do for the most part. I mean, is it
- 49:16Speaker 1: missing from their version, their translation? Uh, no, I think,
- 49:19Speaker 1: I think, I think they just use the King James.
- 49:21Speaker 1: They don't have a like the Jehovah's Witnesses have their
- 49:23Speaker 1: own translation, uh, the New World translation, the, um.
- 49:28Speaker 1: Mormons, I, I think pretty much are, I think they're
- 49:31Speaker 1: still kind of locked into the King James. And for them,
- 49:34Speaker 1: you know, the Bible is accurate in as much as it's, uh,
- 49:37Speaker 1: properly translated, which that means the way we translate it.
- 49:43Speaker 1: So if, if you're not translating it the way we
- 49:45Speaker 1: translate it, then it, it's obviously not going to be accurate. Yeah, yeah,
- 49:49Speaker 1: because I wonder what they would do, what they do
- 49:51Speaker 1: with that verse and
- 49:52Speaker 1: Yeah, because they're not going to say, oh no, that,
- 49:54Speaker 1: that doesn't apply to us. Yeah, but they do, they
- 49:56Speaker 1: do say that apply to them. So this is spiritual deception,
- 50:01Speaker 1: you know, sometimes, sometimes we forget that there is a,
- 50:04Speaker 1: you know, there's a demonic thing that influences people's minds,
- 50:09Speaker 1: so they just can't even sometimes think rationally about something,
- 50:15Speaker 1: you know.
- 50:17Speaker 1: Dave, what do you think?
- 50:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that that's, uh, fantastic. And, uh, as
- 50:22Speaker 2: far as the illusions go, uh, even Proverbs tells us that.
- 50:27Speaker 2: The wicked run when no one's chasing them, they're still
- 50:31Speaker 2: in the deception and, uh, deception goes both ways because,
- 50:37Speaker 2: of course, we know that the Lord has destroyed armies
- 50:41Speaker 2: just by using Gideon's.
- 50:45Speaker 2: Lamps or he even made the sounds of chariots to
- 50:49Speaker 2: chase away multitudes, but it wasn't really happening, but they
- 50:54Speaker 2: thought they heard something. And so these people again, like
- 50:58Speaker 2: the pastor was saying, are probably at a place of
- 51:01Speaker 2: such a deception that they can't see it for what
- 51:05Speaker 2: it actually says. Don't receive that. And it's a fantastic
- 51:11Speaker 2: answer by the pastor. Thank you.
- 51:13Speaker 1: You're welcome. And, and you know, a lot of times too,
- 51:16Speaker 1: you guys, um.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Know this that in like a a group like the
- 51:22Speaker 1: LDS or the Jehovah's Witnesses or
- 51:27Speaker 1: You know, groups like that, you're, you're not really free
- 51:31Speaker 1: to think for yourself. You really are under the authority
- 51:36Speaker 1: of a, a group of people, you know, like in Mormonism,
- 51:39Speaker 1: you have the apostles and the and the prophets and
- 51:43Speaker 1: so they're.
- 51:44Speaker 1: You know, things come down from them.
- 51:47Speaker 1: So to contradict them.
- 51:49Speaker 1: Is, is a huge thing. So most individual Mormons are,
- 51:54Speaker 1: are not gonna do that, you know, but what, what
- 51:56Speaker 1: do I know? I'm not an apostle. I'm not a prophet. So,
- 51:59Speaker 1: or a priest, um, I think it's priest, apostles and priests,
- 52:03Speaker 1: priesthood is what they have, yeah, um, yeah, so, uh,
- 52:06Speaker 1: you know, it, it's a.
- 52:08Speaker 1: I mean things, these things are, they're complicated because to
- 52:13Speaker 1: us it just seems as clear as day, um, you know,
- 52:18Speaker 1: I was talking to some Mormons ages ago they were
- 52:21Speaker 1: came into my garage and we were talking and going
- 52:24Speaker 1: back and forth and
- 52:25Speaker 1: Um, I, I talked to them about being saved, and
- 52:29Speaker 1: they kind of scoffed at the idea of saved, like, oh,
- 52:32Speaker 1: you think you're saved, huh? You think you, you're already
- 52:35Speaker 1: saved and you're gonna go be with the Lord already. Well,
- 52:39Speaker 1: you know, they don't believe that. They believe that you're
- 52:40Speaker 1: saved by works and you don't find out until you've
- 52:43Speaker 1: done enough works. But when you show them the biblical text,
- 52:46Speaker 1: for by grace you are saved, past tense.
- 52:50Speaker 1: You would think they would go, oh gosh, it says
- 52:53Speaker 1: saved right there, but now they just carry on with
- 52:55Speaker 1: their argument so much of the time. But who knows,
- 52:59Speaker 1: you know, you're planting seeds sometimes that are going to, uh, sprout.
- 53:06Speaker 1: Maybe, you know, much, much later, yeah, for sure. All right,
- 53:10Speaker 1: I think we have time for at least one more question.
- 53:12Speaker 1: I'll get one that was sent in on Facebook. I
- 53:15Speaker 1: will reach into my messenger bag, Facebook messenger bag. See
- 53:19Speaker 1: what I did there. Adele sent this one in. Uh,
- 53:21Speaker 1: is there any biblical reference to where the millennial peoples
- 53:25Speaker 1: who inhabit the earth will go after the burning of
- 53:28Speaker 1: the existing heaven and earth, Phil?
- 53:33Speaker 1: Can you repeat that again for $400? That's the question, yeah.
- 53:38Speaker 1: You can also phone a friend, but your friend is
- 53:39Speaker 1: Brian Broderson. So is there any biblical reference to where
- 53:43Speaker 1: the millennial peoples who inhabit the earth will go after
- 53:48Speaker 1: the burning of the existing heaven and earth?
- 53:51Speaker 1: Uh, there's a, there's a new Earth, so.
- 53:56Speaker 1: I think they're confused, but I'm, I'm confused at how
- 53:59Speaker 1: they're asking that. So the people who lived through the,
- 54:01Speaker 1: into the millennium, uh, the world is not burned up
- 54:06Speaker 1: in that moment.
- 54:08Speaker 1: And so they, they, there's judgment, but not that, and
- 54:11Speaker 1: then at the very end of the age, it's a
- 54:14Speaker 1: new heaven and a new earth, and that's all peoples
- 54:17Speaker 1: are redeemed at that point. There are no people continuing
- 54:21Speaker 1: into the eternal state of God's perfection that are not
- 54:26Speaker 1: in the redeemed family. So when the millennium begins, there
- 54:30Speaker 1: are people who continue into that, but the world is
- 54:32Speaker 1: not all burned up at that time.
- 54:35Speaker 1: And I'm understanding their correct question correctly, I think they're
- 54:38Speaker 1: mixing those two things. Brian, any thoughts for Adele.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Uh, no. OK.
- 54:49Speaker 1: All right, we'll leave it at that. Adele, thank you
- 54:51Speaker 1: so much for sending in your question through the Pastor's
- 54:53Speaker 1: Perspective Facebook page using Messenger, which is one of many
- 54:56Speaker 1: ways that you can get your question to us. We've
- 54:59Speaker 1: also got the Pastor's Perspective Instagram where you can DM us,
- 55:03Speaker 1: or Kwave.com, the pastor's perspective page. The quickest way to
- 55:07Speaker 1: get there is to scan the QR code if you're
- 55:09Speaker 1: watching on Facebook, YouTube, or Instagram.
- 55:12Speaker 1: That'll take you right to the page. You can submit
- 55:13Speaker 1: the form, fill out the form, submit it to us, and, uh,
- 55:16Speaker 1: we might read it here on the radio show. If
- 55:18Speaker 1: we do, we'll send you a quick email to let
- 55:20Speaker 1: you know the date and approximate time that we read
- 55:24Speaker 1: your question. Speaking of time, we're out of time, but
- 55:26Speaker 1: we'll be here tomorrow between 3 and 4 p.m. Pacific,
- 55:30Speaker 1: and we would love to hear your question at 888-564-6173.
- 55:35Speaker 1: For Brian Broderson and Phil Metzger, I'm Brian Perez. Thanks
- 55:38Speaker 1: for watching and listening to Pastor's Perspective.
