Transcript
- 0:05Welcome to Unmasked, where we take off the filters and get
- 0:07real about faith, failure, and finding freedom.
- 0:10I'm your host, Wesley Farnsworth, a dad, veteran,
- 0:13author, and a man who's learned that God does his best work in
- 0:17the middle of our mess. Each episode will have honest
- 0:19conversations with people who've walked through addiction, pain,
- 0:22or doubt, and with pastors, leaders, and everyday believers
- 0:27who are learning to live and lead authentically.
- 0:30So take a breath, pull up a chair, and let's get real.
- 0:33This is Unmasked. Today on Unmasked, we have a
- 0:41very special guest with us. Her name is Andrea, and I was
- 0:45able and privileged to meet her through Celebrate Recovery.
- 0:48And man, she has a powerful testimony.
- 0:51She shared it for the first time this past week.
- 0:54And when I've heard it, I've said, you know, I have this
- 0:56podcast and I think other people would really connect with it or
- 1:00get something from it. Would you be willing to share?
- 1:02And without missing a beat, she said absolutely.
- 1:05And so, Andrea, thank you so much for being with us here and
- 1:08sharing your testimony on this recording for the listeners.
- 1:11Without further ado, we're going to go ahead and turn the floor
- 1:14over. And Andrea?
- 1:15My name is Andrea and I'm a child of God who has struggled
- 1:19with chemical dependency, codependency, promiscuity and
- 1:24insecurity. Currently I struggle with anger,
- 1:28PTSD, OCD, and a fear of public speaking.
- 1:31I was born to a single mom. I never knew my biological
- 1:35father since my mom always told me there were three possible men
- 1:40that could be my father. I was 35 years old when I
- 1:43discovered who my biological father was.
- 1:46It wasn't until my mom passed away in 2019 that he reached out
- 1:51to me and has kept in contact. I have no desire to have any
- 1:56type of father daughter relationship with him.
- 1:58Up until I was 4 years old, it was mom and me.
- 2:02She met up with an old schoolmate who was a single
- 2:05father with a four year old son. At that point my childhood
- 2:09changed forever. That's when the molestation and
- 2:13abuse began until I was 13 years old.
- 2:16All through my childhood, I endured mental, physical and
- 2:20emotional abuse at the hands of my stepdad.
- 2:23I lived in a household consumed with domestic violence against
- 2:28my mom because of my stepdad, all due to his alcoholism.
- 2:32Before long, my younger brother was born.
- 2:35That's when the house excuse me, That's when the abuse began to
- 2:39happen more often. Since I wasn't his biological
- 2:42daughter, he would say things to justify the abuse.
- 2:46The one person in my life who I could trust and would believe me
- 2:50was my grandma. I told her everything that
- 2:53happened to me. Each time she would write it
- 2:55down in a book. Off and on throughout my
- 2:57childhood my grandparents would take me from my my mom.
- 3:00Since my mom said I was the problem child, she couldn't
- 3:04handle me any longer. Than tragedy struck our struck
- 3:07our family. The home we lived in caught on
- 3:10fire due to faulty wiring. We lost all of our possessions.
- 3:14Thanks to the many blessings of donations from family and my
- 3:18grandparents, we have a new home.
- 3:20Grandma and grandpa bought mom a double wide trailer in a nice
- 3:24trailer park. The kids in school referred to
- 3:27me as trailer trash on top of the many other hurtful names
- 3:31they called me. I endured a great deal of
- 3:33bullying in school that lowered my self esteem and I had very
- 3:37few people I interacted with. I also developed social
- 3:42avoidance and became isolated. The abuse continued until I was
- 3:4613 years old. That's when my mom I came home
- 3:49to find my stepfather was gone along with the checkbook.
- 3:53It was the last time he ever molested me.
- 3:56My mom finally listened to my grandma and heard how I was hurt
- 4:00through the years. The result was that my mom had
- 4:03my stepdad arrested. They got married later so my
- 4:06brother could still have visits with his father.
- 4:09And that is when I went to live with my grandparents since my
- 4:12grandpa's health was going downhill due to his cancer.
- 4:16Before long, my grandpa was placed in Hospice and ended up
- 4:20passing away. After grandpa died, I stayed
- 4:23with my grandma while my mom and the two boys lived down the
- 4:26street in her trailer. Even though they were married,
- 4:29my mom and stepdad couldn't live together due to his offense.
- 4:33Instead, my stepdad lived at my grandma's old house and was able
- 4:38to see my younger brother when supervised by my mom.
- 4:42Living with my grandma, I felt safe for the most part.
- 4:45Unfortunately, my safety became compromised and I was raped when
- 4:50I was 14 years old. From that point, my life was
- 4:53never the same. I was an honor student
- 4:56throughout high school. I began skipping classes in 9th
- 4:59grade. I dabbled in marijuana and
- 5:02alcohol. I became promiscuous after
- 5:05graduation. I chose to work before going to
- 5:08college. I began attending a local
- 5:10college but later withdrew so I could continue working to save
- 5:14money. It was at my job that I met the
- 5:17man who would eventually be become the father of my
- 5:20children, my husband, and later on my best friend and Papa to
- 5:25our grandson. At first, we didn't like each
- 5:28other. He was an irritation, a daily
- 5:30pain, and now he's a thorn in my side to this day.
- 5:34Coincidence would have it that his sister lived near me and I
- 5:39spent many days at her house with her two boys and at times
- 5:43to babysit them, my friend and my friend.
- 5:46His sister asked if she could set me up on a blind date with
- 5:50her brother. When I arrived at her house to
- 5:52meet the blind date, it turned out to be the man that I
- 5:55despised. She introduced us and we both
- 5:58quickly spoke up. We already knew each other from
- 6:01work. To my surprise, I just accepted
- 6:04a blind date with her older brother, my former Co worker.
- 6:08Eventually we became a couple and I soon discovered that I was
- 6:11pregnant. I was already on my own since my
- 6:14mom had kicked me out of my grandma's house because of my
- 6:17refusal to bow down to her every demand and control and not
- 6:22staying home. Finding out that I was pregnant
- 6:25was both scary and happy time all at once.
- 6:28I was tearful when telling my boyfriend since he was in jail
- 6:33but he was ecstatic at finding out the news of our baby
- 6:36arriving. I feared being a single parent
- 6:39since my boyfriend was on probation and in jail on the
- 6:43violation and I was only 19 and living with a roommate.
- 6:47It was the first time my mom would be there for me during my
- 6:51pregnancy and when the baby was born.
- 6:53My pregnancy was developing as expected and we were prepared
- 6:57for baby girls arrival. It was at the next doctor's
- 7:01visit that the ultrasound showed abnormalities.
- 7:04Was referred to Iowa City for additional testing.
- 7:07As young, first time parents, we made the most we made the most
- 7:11heartbreaking decision of our lives.
- 7:14We were told it would be a decision to save my life due to
- 7:19the known risk since the baby may not be delivered as
- 7:23scheduled. At this point I stopped
- 7:25believing there was a God. I thought if there was a God
- 7:29then why was he taking my baby away from me?
- 7:32I wondered if I was being punished for not being a good
- 7:35enough daughter, granddaughter, sister or friend or what.
- 7:39I didn't know. It turned out that my baby was
- 7:42stillborn. We had her blessed by the
- 7:44chaplain in the hospital. Being 4 1/2, four months
- 7:48premature, she wasn't strong enough to survive.
- 7:51I blamed myself for so long thinking it was my fault and
- 7:56that I must have done something wrong for this to have happened.
- 7:59I went into a deep depression after being told there was a 30
- 8:03to 50% chance of being able to get pregnant again and to carry
- 8:08full term. I had so much resentment or a
- 8:11heartache toward God and other moms.
- 8:15Why could they have their babies yet He took mine?
- 8:18At this point I'd given up thinking that there was a God
- 8:21again. Few months later I discovered
- 8:23once again I was pregnant. Mixed emotions filled my heart
- 8:27as I thought there would be another punishment from God,
- 8:30another one of my children, for Him to RIP away from me, leaving
- 8:34me broken and destroyed. I thought I could handle another
- 8:38I. I thought I couldn't handle
- 8:40another loss. Each passing month the baby kept
- 8:43growing. Each doctor's appointment
- 8:46provided more ease, joy and excitement.
- 8:49I thought maybe there was a God. Maybe he was hearing my prayers.
- 8:53Maybe I wasn't being punished. I found out that I was having a
- 8:57boy or firecracker baby. My boyfriend and I were elated
- 9:01before along the most beautiful of God's greatest gifts was
- 9:06born. My son was a rainbow baby
- 9:08miracle. He gives me so much joy,
- 9:11happiness as his mom. My whole life centers around him
- 9:15with his dad going in and out of jail.
- 9:17During the the those first five years I was all my son had.
- 9:22It was my job to protect and keep him safe.
- 9:25I did my best as a single mom. I would take my son to see his
- 9:29dad when I could. By the time my son was three
- 9:32years old his dad was in Fort Madison.
- 9:35That was when my life took a drastic turn and I never knew
- 9:38how much it would hurt those around me.
- 9:41This is when I was introduced to the White demon of death or his
- 9:45most know it mess it was. It was through an acquaintance
- 9:49that I started using and got hooked.
- 9:52I thought I discovered a new set of friends.
- 9:55I was vulnerable and a follower looking to fit in.
- 9:59That is when my life of crime began.
- 10:02At first I was never caught or arrested.
- 10:05When supplies were needed, I was called upon to go get what was
- 10:08needed. I thought of myself as a
- 10:10functioning addict. I was working a full time job,
- 10:16going to school, getting married, and being a mom.
- 10:19I thought I was hiding my addiction from my family and
- 10:22close friends. My state of mind led me to
- 10:25believe that I controlled my addiction.
- 10:28It didn't control me. I believed I was using on a
- 10:31casual basis, but that was the furthest from only the truth.
- 10:36I didn't realize my family knew my addiction even though I was
- 10:40trying to hide it. Four years later, my life fell
- 10:43apart. After being together for 18
- 10:46years and married for three years, my marriage was in
- 10:49shambles. There was no reconciliation as
- 10:52underlying circumstances kept that from happening.
- 10:56I filed for a divorce. Having been hurt so much in the
- 10:59past, I thought this was just another punishment from God.
- 11:03It was something else that I found hate in my heart for.
- 11:06I was at a loss to numb my pain. My addiction went into
- 11:10OverDrive. I was allowing my son at 14
- 11:14years to smoke marijuana and drink alcohol.
- 11:18As an addict. I was an enabler to my child as
- 11:21well. What kind of mom had I turned
- 11:24into? He was under my supervision, so
- 11:26I didn't think there was any harm in it.
- 11:29I became promiscuous again. I would get high and party with
- 11:33my friends when my son went to his dad's house or I'd wait till
- 11:37he went to bed and then party. Soon I moved to another town
- 11:41which kept me sober since we would only drive the hour back
- 11:45and forth to Waterloo to see family.
- 11:47Before long both of us were homesick so we moved back into
- 11:52my mom's house, which was my downfall.
- 11:55Seeing only friends and going back to my old stomping grounds
- 11:59found me making up excuses. Could not go go back to mom.
- 12:03I knew my son was OK and well taken care of.
- 12:06I found myself staying out more and more and getting wrapped up
- 12:10in a life of addiction that I walked away from those few
- 12:14months earlier. Soon I was involved with friends
- 12:17who had wrong motives and became very promiscuous.
- 12:20I believed I was hiding these things from my son and family,
- 12:24but my son was very smart and knew I was using again.
- 12:28As time went on. Living with my mom and brother
- 12:31wasn't easy. Even though I was working,
- 12:34making car payments, caring for my son, and paying rent, I felt
- 12:38like a prisoner as well as a child.
- 12:41My younger brother treated me like a prisoner.
- 12:44My mom treated me like a child. With curfews, check insurance,
- 12:48permission to leave, and having to tell her where my where my
- 12:51whereabouts. I stayed away more and more.
- 12:54I even tried to fake being kidnapped while running around
- 12:58with a friend. I was located far away in
- 13:01another county and was in such bad shape that I was taken to
- 13:05the local hospital for treatment.
- 13:08When being questioned by law enforcement, I didn't even know
- 13:11where or who I was. I was transferred to another
- 13:15facility for detox. Soon I was calling into work
- 13:18more and more, distancing myself farther from my family and my
- 13:22son. I was putting my addiction above
- 13:25all else. Eventually, I developed a new
- 13:28male relationship and we began committing crimes to feed our
- 13:32drug habit. I was stealing jewelry from my
- 13:35mom, pawning possessions, and writing bad checks as well as
- 13:40using my mom's bank account. My boyfriend ended up going to
- 13:44jail and I was on a downward spiral of self destruction.
- 13:49DHS got involved and my son's father returned to Iowa to care
- 13:55for my son. I chose to do what was in my
- 13:58son's best interest, which was to sign Karen over to his dad.
- 14:04I no longer had control of my addiction.
- 14:07It had totally consumed me. Although I was allowed
- 14:10supervised visits with my son, those visits were few and far
- 14:15between and finding authorized transportation to bring my son
- 14:19to see me proved nerve wracking. Well, having to follow the DHS
- 14:24plan for compliance and visits, I still didn't stay sober.
- 14:28Continuing to use was the only solace from my pain.
- 14:33I could stay numb and not have to think about what was going on
- 14:37around me. Instead, I could distance myself
- 14:40and isolate and enjoy my own perfect world.
- 14:44My addiction and promiscu was out of control and I began
- 14:48selling myself to get my next fix.
- 14:51I kept telling my son I was staying sober, but he knew
- 14:55better. My lies broke the bond between
- 14:57us that I never thought would happen.
- 15:00Before long, I was hospitalized for drug detox and a psychiatric
- 15:05hold for an attempted overdose. My family got a court order for
- 15:10hospitalization due to my paranoia and addiction.
- 15:13My life was at its lowest, in shambles.
- 15:16Not only was I losing my son, I lost my home and I had nowhere
- 15:21to go. My heart was completely
- 15:23shattered the day I watched my son and his dad drive away,
- 15:27knowing that would be the last time that I could see him until
- 15:31he turned 18, all due to my choices.
- 15:34I was arrested a few days before my birthday due to my addiction.
- 15:38A warrant was issued and I was jailed and sent to prison on a
- 15:42five year sentence. While in the county jail, I
- 15:45opened the Bible for the first time since I was a kid.
- 15:49I was sitting in my cell with tears rolling down my cheek.
- 15:53I opened the Bible and to my surprise the first burst that it
- 15:57opened to was Philippians 413. For I can do everything through
- 16:02Christ who gives me strength. I didn't know what that verse
- 16:05meant until I signed up for a Bible study and the Sunday
- 16:09church service. I figured why not, it will just
- 16:13be a way to get out of my cell. But what I got from that Bible
- 16:17study and Sunday service was nothing less than eye opening.
- 16:21I went back to my cell, dropped to my knees and cried.
- 16:25I asked God to give me strength and willpower to fight my
- 16:29addiction, my time, and guide me to rebuild a relationship with
- 16:35my son. I attended NA meetings, church
- 16:38and Bible study all while keeping the line of
- 16:41communication with my son. While in Mitchellville Women's
- 16:45Prison, I joined a group called Women of the Well, a faith-based
- 16:49ministry within the walls of the women's prison.
- 16:52It helps women with hurts and hang ups as they transition back
- 16:56into the community. It was in this group that I
- 17:00received my first Life Recovery Bible.
- 17:03God carried me through the next eight months of prison and when
- 17:07I entered the Women's Center, I did my programming, community
- 17:12service, attended Bible study and work.
- 17:15While in the well in the Women's Center, I went to my first
- 17:19church service at a nearby church.
- 17:21I attended every Sunday. Then I found out about Celebrate
- 17:26Recovery. I attended every Sunday.
- 17:29Then I found out about Celebrate Recovery while in the Women's
- 17:32Center. I thought what could it hurt to
- 17:35add another program to help in my recovery and walk with Christ
- 17:41that there was a van that came each week to pick up the ladies
- 17:45as I began. As I began to attend Celebrate
- 17:48Recovery, I met some amazing people who connected with me and
- 17:53are still my lifetime family. These ladies became my sponsor,
- 17:58accountability partner, and sisters in Christ.
- 18:02They took a chance on me no matter what mistakes or
- 18:06downfalls I had and have continued to stand by my side to
- 18:10this day. After my discharge from the
- 18:12Women's Center, I continued attending CR and live lived with
- 18:17my mom again. It was a process to earn her
- 18:21trust back. However, over time our
- 18:24relationship as mother and daughter became strained once
- 18:28again. I continued to follow my parole
- 18:30discharge plan as required and after being out of prison, I was
- 18:36discharged off parole four years early with good behavior and all
- 18:43requirements met. IPO approved me for release.
- 18:46I was ecstatic as was my mom. I called my son immediately to
- 18:53tell him the good news. Even though he was 1300 miles
- 19:00away, he was very proud of me. The next milestone was reuniting
- 19:05with my son. To have him back in my arms
- 19:08after almost three years apart was going to make my sobriety
- 19:13and hard work worth. To hear his voice on the phone
- 19:16or on FaceTime wouldn't be the same as holding him in my arms.
- 19:21However, I wasn't being honest about staying sober.
- 19:24I began to dabble here and there, hiding my use from my
- 19:28mom. I was using to take the edge off
- 19:30all the the stress while it's still attending CR.
- 19:33Then my son finally came home for good.
- 19:36I stopped using and remained sober once again and before long
- 19:40my son was back in my arms. That day was the most crying I
- 19:43had done since he was born. I couldn't stop hugging him.
- 19:47This was finally the moment I had waited for to rebuild our
- 19:51bond as mom and son. I couldn't take back the last
- 19:55three years, but I would do everything in my power to make
- 19:58up for it. All I was was going well until
- 20:01Mother's Day. It was the worst.
- 20:03My mom threw me out when we got into an argument and I was high.
- 20:08My son gave me a hug, said happy Mother's Day and walked out.
- 20:13I followed and could only see the car drive away.
- 20:16It was that. It was then that I realized I
- 20:19had let him down. I went on a 5 day binge and got
- 20:23thrown. Out onto the street and ended up
- 20:25in detox. Once again someone I thought was
- 20:29a friend took me in but was treating me like a child.
- 20:33When I wouldn't comply with demands I was thrown out.
- 20:37Once again I was on the street, nowhere to go.
- 20:40I sat on the crib crying and asked God to Take Me Out of this
- 20:45never ending nightmare. I had put my put myself into it.
- 20:49I had just reached 60 days of sobriety, yet my son nor anyone
- 20:55in my family wanted anything to do with me.
- 20:57I couldn't blame them since I had caused much pain and hurt.
- 21:02God heard my cries and my cousin who I'd been estranged from and
- 21:06was also in recovery, opened her door and took me in.
- 21:10She became the only person who gave me strength to stay sober
- 21:15since then. God.
- 21:16God has transformed my life tremendously.
- 21:19By the grace of God, the chains of my addiction to meth have
- 21:23been broken. I gave up my promiscuity, my
- 21:27promiscuous lifestyle, and I've gained A healthier and stronger
- 21:31bond with my son and my daughter-in-law.
- 21:34Today I have been sober seven years and six months.
- 21:37The day I said enough was enough.
- 21:41I made a choice to walk away from the one thing that had
- 21:44destroyed my life for so long. Now I'm the proud grandma of two
- 21:49beautiful, very active toddler grandsons.
- 21:52The relationship with my son has been restored and our bond gets
- 21:57stronger daily. I have a very beautiful
- 22:00daughter-in-law. The sibling relationship with my
- 22:03brother is getting better. After attending Celebrate
- 22:07Recovery and doing a step study, I began to see the healing from
- 22:11my abuse, codependency and so much more.
- 22:15The things that have been hidden for so many years have finally
- 22:19been brought into the light. It's more than a program, it's a
- 22:22way of life and at work. In the Step study, the lesson
- 22:26that sticks out to me the most is forgiveness based upon
- 22:30Principle 6. Evaluate all my relationships
- 22:33and offer forgiveness to those who have hurt me.
- 22:36Make amends for harm I've done to others, except when to do so
- 22:41would harm them or others. I've learned that forgiveness is
- 22:45essential in recovery. Always remember, forgiving
- 22:49someone doesn't mean you excuse or condone actions or behaviors.
- 22:55It's about releasing the power they have over you.
- 23:00By doing this allows the possibility of healing
- 23:05relationships and moving forward in your recovery.
- 23:09Keep in mind, forgiveness is the process that involves the
- 23:15willingness to forgive and can be the first step towards
- 23:19healing and freedom. Unfortunately, my mom passed
- 23:23away three months prior to my one year anniversary of
- 23:27sobriety. I know she's proud of me each
- 23:30and every day. Since being on this recovery
- 23:33journey I have become a leader in my Celebrate Recovery group.
- 23:37I also Co lead a STEP study and I recommitted my life to Christ
- 23:42on July 27th, 2025. Being a member of my local
- 23:46church. God plays a big part in my life
- 23:49without my faith which gives me the needed willpower,
- 23:53perseverance and the unconditional love and support
- 23:57of my family as well as my CR sisters and brothers.
- 24:01I don't, I don't know where I'd be, Philippians 413 says.
- 24:05For I can do everything to Christ who gives me strength.
- 24:09This will forever be my life verse.
- 24:12My hope and prayer is that my story will touch people who are
- 24:17on their journey of recovery. I'm living evidence that
- 24:21recovery is possible by the power of God's grace.
- 24:25Celebrate Recovery can help anyone with hurts, hang ups and
- 24:31habits. Thank you for listening and God
- 24:33bless. Wow, Andrea, what a story.
- 24:36You have truly been through a lot and it is just so powerful
- 24:40to hear where you've been and where God has brought you now.
- 24:44And I just I'm so appreciative of you coming on and and sharing
- 24:48your story. What would you tell the
- 24:50listeners? Maybe there's a listener out
- 24:52there that is dealing with a struggle with it with when it
- 24:57comes to forgiving, you know, they maybe they can't forgive
- 25:00themselves for something that they've done and that's holding
- 25:03them back from walking in the freedom.
- 25:06What advice would you give that person to be able to allow
- 25:10themselves to forgive themselves?
- 25:12Every day is a struggle. It has taken me a long while to
- 25:20be able to let go and forgive myself.
- 25:25You have in order to recover and be free, you have to.
- 25:33You can never forget, but you can forgive.
- 25:37You'll always have that that mindset, but always keep a
- 25:42positive mindset. You can, you can let go and let
- 25:47God. And that's what I always preach
- 25:49every day, let go to let God. And that's what's that.
- 25:53What that is, what Philippians 413 is all about, is letting go,
- 25:58letting that. I love that.
- 26:00Yeah, it's a, that's a great verse to to live by, you know,
- 26:03let go and let God. There's a lot of things that we
- 26:06can't control. And luckily enough, we serve the
- 26:09one that can. And we just got to put our trust
- 26:11in him. It's good stuff.
- 26:14Well, Andrea, again, thank you so much for coming on and being
- 26:17willing to share your testimony. Listeners, I hope that you were
- 26:20able to get something from this testimony.
- 26:23And I encourage you to go back and listen again and share it
- 26:27with somebody that you think could benefit from it because
- 26:29there's just so much to in this testimony to unpacked the things
- 26:33that she's gone through. And it's just, it's so powerful.
- 26:36And so, Andrea, once again, thank you very much.
