- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday, it's the 2nd of
- 0:16December. That's right, we have entered
- 0:18the last month of the year. But as if you need me to tell
- 0:22you that, I hope you're going well.
- 0:24I hope that as you're listening, you are not dreading the week
- 0:27ahead too much. I hope there's some good stuff
- 0:29in there, probably some challenging things, probably
- 0:32some juggling of a number of competing priorities.
- 0:35But that is life, right? That's how we roll.
- 0:38And it's not just us. But today we're going to
- 0:40continue reading through the book of Acts, where we will see
- 0:45Paul continuing to travel and to preach.
- 0:48And there'll be some who think this is a great idea and some
- 0:51who think you are a twit and we want nothing to do with you.
- 0:56And the complexity of his journey is apparent.
- 1:00So let us dive back into the story right where we left off
- 1:04last week as we continue reading Acts Chapter 17.
- 1:19Paul and Silas then travelled through the towns of Amphipolis
- 1:22and Apollonia and came to Thessalonica, where there was a
- 1:26Jewish synagogue. As was Paul's custom, he went to
- 1:29the synagogue service and for three Sabbaths in a row he used
- 1:33the scriptures to reason with the people.
- 1:36He explained the prophecies and proved that the Messiah must
- 1:39suffer and rise from the dead. He said this Jesus I'm telling
- 1:45you about is the Messiah. Some of the Jews who listened
- 1:49were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with many God
- 1:53fearing Greek men and quite a few prominent women.
- 1:56But some of the Jews were jealous, so they gathered some
- 1:59troublemakers from the marketplace to form a mob and
- 2:02start a riot. They attacked the home of Jason,
- 2:05searching for Paul and Silas so they could drag them out to the
- 2:08crowd. Not finding them there, they
- 2:11dragged out Jason and some of the other believers instead and
- 2:15took them before the City Council.
- 2:18Paul and Silas have caused trouble all over the world.
- 2:22They shouted and now they are here disturbing our city too,
- 2:27and Jason has welcomed them into his home.
- 2:30They are all guilty of treason against Caesar, for they profess
- 2:35allegiance to another king named Jesus.
- 2:38The people of the city as well as the City Council were thrown
- 2:42into turmoil by these reports. So the officials forced Jason
- 2:46and the other believers to post bond and then they released
- 2:50them. That very night the believers
- 2:53sent Paul and Silas to Berea. When they arrived there, they
- 2:58went to the Jewish synagogue and the people of Berea were more
- 3:02open minded than those in Thessalonica and they listened
- 3:06eagerly to Paul's message. They searched the Scriptures day
- 3:10after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.
- 3:14As a result, many Jews believed, as did many of the prominent
- 3:19Greek women and men. But when some Jews in
- 3:24Thessalonica learned that Paul was preaching the word of God in
- 3:27Berea, they went there and stirred up trouble.
- 3:32The believers acted at once, sending Paul on to the coast
- 3:35while Silas and Timothy remained behind.
- 3:38Those escorting Paul went with him all the way to Athens.
- 3:43Then they returned to Berea with instructions for Silas and
- 3:46Timothy to hurry and join him. While Paul was waiting for them
- 3:51in Athens, he was deeply troubled by all the idols he saw
- 3:55everywhere in the city. He went to the synagogue to
- 3:58reason with the Jews and the God fearing Gentiles, and he spoke
- 4:02daily in the public square to all who happened to be there.
- 4:06He also had a debate with some of the Epicurean and Stoic
- 4:09philosophers. When he told them about Jesus
- 4:12and his resurrection, they said, what's this babbler trying to
- 4:16say with these strange ideas he's picked up.
- 4:20Others said he seems to be preaching about some foreign
- 4:23gods. Then they took him to the high
- 4:26council of the city. Come and tell us about this new
- 4:29teaching. They said.
- 4:31You were saying some rather strange things, and we want to
- 4:34know what it's all about. It should be explained that all
- 4:38the Athenians, as well as the foreigners and Athens, seem to
- 4:42spend all their time discussing the latest ideas.
- 4:46So Paul, standing before the council, addressed them as
- 4:50follows. Men of Athens, I notice that you
- 4:54are very religious in every way, for as I was walking along I saw
- 4:59your many shrines and one of your altars had this inscription
- 5:04on it to an unknown God. This God whom you worship
- 5:10without knowing is the one I'm telling you about.
- 5:14He is the God who made the world and everything in it.
- 5:18Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn't live in man
- 5:22made temples, and human hands can't serve his needs, for he
- 5:27has no needs. He Himself gives life and breath
- 5:31to everything, and He satisfies every need From one man He
- 5:36created all the nations through the whole earth.
- 5:40He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and He
- 5:44determined their boundaries. His purpose was for the nations
- 5:48to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward Him and
- 5:53find Him, though He is not far from any one of us.
- 5:57For in Him we live and move and exist.
- 6:02As some of your own poets have said, we are His offspring.
- 6:07And since this is true, we shouldn't think of God as an
- 6:10idol designed by Craftsman from gold or silver or stone.
- 6:15God overlooked people's ignorance about these things in
- 6:18earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to
- 6:23repent of their sins and turn to Him.
- 6:27For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the
- 6:31man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is
- 6:36by raising him from the dead. When they heard Paul speak about
- 6:40the resurrection of the dead, some laughed in contempt, but
- 6:44others said we want to hear more about this later.
- 6:48That ended Paul's discussion with them, but some joined him
- 6:52and became believers. Among them were Dionysius, a
- 6:55member of the Council, and a woman named Demarus, and others
- 6:59with them. Ah yes, Lord, you are so big and
- 7:14all encompassing in your rule. As Paul said to the Athenians,
- 7:20it's in you that we live and we move and we exist.
- 7:27Thank you Jesus, that through you all things were made, and
- 7:31that through You all things will be restored and your love knows
- 7:36no bounds. And we worship you and we
- 7:42recognised you as supreme over all, and that every breath we
- 7:47take, every step we take, every thought we think, we do this in
- 7:53you and in your provision and in your guidance and in your
- 7:57blessing. So we thank you and we praise
- 8:00you, and we pray all these things in your name, Jesus.
