- 0:01Griffin: Welcome to Stories for Robots.
- 0:03I'm Griffin Schwed, your host and storyteller.
- 0:06Join me as I share some of humanity's most timeless tales with two silly robots who
- 0:12are trying to understand human culture by exploring fairy tales, folklore, and
- 0:16historical events from around the world.
- 0:19In Season 1, we're diving into stories you know, or at least you think you do.
- 0:25We're going back to the original versions of classic tales made
- 0:28famous by animated movies.
- 0:30But these original stories are pretty different from the
- 0:33versions you grew up with.
- 0:35My two robot friends have no idea what's coming, and honestly,
- 0:39you probably don't either.
- 0:41Ready to meet them?
- 0:43Okay, everyone.
- 0:44Why don't you introduce yourselves?
- 0:46Vector: Greetings.
- 0:47I am Vector.
- 0:48I am interested in human customs and traditions.
- 0:51Fun fact: did you know that some humans like to make a meal of their own boogers?
- 0:56They pick them and eat them and find them delicious.
- 0:59Griffin: Well, I don't know if that's totally true, but let's move on.
- 1:03Spark?
- 1:04Spark: Yes.
- 1:05I'm Spark, and I am so excited to be here.
- 1:07I love humans.
- 1:09I'm really interested in human emotions.
- 1:12As robots, we're, like, totally perfect and know everything and
- 1:15have great judgment, but I just love how humans are always falling
- 1:18in love and messing everything up and making terrible decisions.
- 1:21It's so cute.
- 1:23Vector: I also applaud humans for navigating the world in
- 1:25their awkward flesh-based bodies.
- 1:28Good for you.
- 1:29Metal is superior.
- 1:31I enjoy a titanium blend…
- 1:32Griffin: Thank you.
- 1:33That's enough metal talk, Vector.
- 1:36Okay, today's story is The Little Mermaid, written by Hans Christian Andersen in
- 1:40Denmark nearly 200 years ago in 1836.
- 1:45Now, Andersen had an interesting path to becoming a writer.
- 1:48His father, Hans Andersen, let's call him Big Hans, was a shoemaker.
- 1:53He didn't make a lot of money, and he kinda hated his job, but
- 1:56he had this huge imagination.
- 1:59So Big Hans spent most of his free time reading to Little Hans,
- 2:02inventing stories and putting on plays in a homemade puppet theater.
- 2:06Unfortunately, Big Hans died when Little Hans was just 11 years old.
- 2:11Spark: Vector, are you crying?
- 2:12Vector: I am not crying.
- 2:13You are crying.
- 2:15Robots do not cry.
- 2:16Griffin: mm-hmm.
- 2:19The silver lining is that little Hans was hooked on telling stories.
- 2:23A lot of his stories include themes like loneliness and feeling like an outsider.
- 2:27Spark: Does that make them more relatable even though they're kinda sad?
- 2:30Vector: Not to me.
- 2:30I have lots of friends.
- 2:32Spark: Really?
- 2:32Like who besides me?
- 2:35Vector: So many.
- 2:35Can't possibly count.
- 2:37Well, there's Blinky, Metal Boy, Maximo 12000-
- 2:42Griffin: All right, Vector, that's enough.
- 2:43We believe you.
- 2:45So without further ado, let's dive right in.
- 2:48Vector: Awesome swimming pun detected.
- 2:50Griffin: Thanks, buddy.
- 2:53This story begins deep, deep under the ocean.
- 2:56Vector: Blub, blub, blub.
- 2:58Griffin: Wait, Vector, what are you doing?
- 3:00Vector: I am doing the sound effects.
- 3:02Griffin: No, Vector, I'll do that later.
- 3:04You just listen.
- 3:05Vector: Okay… blub.
- 3:07Griffin: Vector.
- 3:08Okay.
- 3:09As I mentioned, this story begins deep under the ocean.
- 3:13Here, at the very bottom of the sea, there's a kingdom of happy merpeople
- 3:17ruled by a powerful old Mer-King.
- 3:20Now, the Mer-King's wife died long ago, so his mother runs the palace.
- 3:24And the Mer-King has six daughters who are pretty much the boss of him.
- 3:28And while each daughter is beautiful and charming, the youngest is most
- 3:32beautiful and charming of all.
- 3:34Spark: Love that for her.
- 3:35Does she have a name?
- 3:37Griffin: Nope.
- 3:37Anderson never gives her one.
- 3:39She's just the little mermaid or the youngest princess
- 3:42throughout the whole story.
- 3:43Spark: Weird.
- 3:44Vector: Yes.
- 3:45Most humans have names, even if they make no sense, like
- 3:48Keith or Jennifer or Dingus.
- 3:50Griffin: Dingus isn't… Eh, never mind.
- 3:53Anyway, the palace is magnificent.
- 3:55It has these huge halls where flowers and colorful corals
- 3:59grow right out of the walls.
- 4:01And the princesses love to open the windows so that fish swim in and out, like
- 4:05birds might if we left our windows open.
- 4:07Vector: That is unhygienic.
- 4:08Fun fact: pigeons are the trash cans of the open skies.
- 4:12Griffin: Harsh but fair, Vector.
- 4:14Anyway, the Little Mermaid is obsessed with the human world.
- 4:17She thinks about them all the time.
- 4:19Spark: OMG, me too.
- 4:21Like, why do some humans have so much hair while others have such shiny bald heads?
- 4:25Griffin: Spark, stay focused.
- 4:26The Little Mermaid is not thinking about that.
- 4:29But because she's so curious, she spends hours with her grandmother
- 4:32asking about everything.
- 4:34By the time she's a teenager, she knows pretty much all
- 4:36there is to know about humans.
- 4:38But she's never met one or even seen one, because in the mer
- 4:41kingdom, you're not allowed to go to the surface until you're fifteen.
- 4:45This is especially frustrating for the Little Mermaid because she's the youngest.
- 4:50After years of waiting, the day finally arrives.
- 4:53But before she can go up, there's a whole long ceremony she has to
- 4:57sit through where her grandmother decorates her tail with seashells.
- 5:00Spark: No offense, Granny, but shake a leg.
- 5:02This girl needs to get to the surface!
- 5:04Griffin: The Little Mermaid agrees, and as soon as the ceremony is
- 5:07done, she races to the surface.
- 5:10She arrives just as the sun is setting.
- 5:12The clouds are pink and gold.
- 5:14The air is warm and still.
- 5:17Right next to her is a large ship, barely moving in the calm evening.
- 5:21And the people on the ship are having a party.
- 5:24Music is playing, everyone is singing, and as it gets dark, they
- 5:28light hundreds of colored lanterns.
- 5:30The Little Mermaid swims right up to the cabin windows, and every time a
- 5:34wave lifts her, she can peek inside.
- 5:37Among the partygoers, she spots a handsome young prince with big, dark eyes.
- 5:43It's his 16th birthday, and the party is for him.
- 5:46Vector: Total hunk alert.
- 5:47Spark: Ooh, they share a birthday.
- 5:49So romantic.
- 5:50I wonder what sign they are.
- 5:52Griffin: When the prince comes on deck, they shoot off fireworks.
- 5:55The Little Mermaid has never seen fireworks before.
- 5:58At first, she's terrified and ducks underwater.
- 6:01But eventually, she peeks back up and sees the sky filled with streaks
- 6:05of light, spinning wheels of fire, and explosions of every color.
- 6:09She's mesmerized, not just by the fireworks, but by the prince himself.
- 6:14Spark: Oh yeah, she's in love.
- 6:16Griffin: She watches for hours as they celebrate.
- 6:19Even when the party winds down, she can't stop staring at the prince.
- 6:23And then she notices something.
- 6:25The waves are getting bigger.
- 6:27The wind is picking up.
- 6:29Dark clouds are gathering.
- 6:31The sailors rush to take down the sails.
- 6:34The ship is rocking violently.
- 6:36Then, crack, lightning splits the sky.
- 6:41The waves are as tall as mountains now, lifting the ship up and
- 6:44dropping it into valleys of water.
- 6:46The mast snaps in half.
- 6:49Water pours into the ship, and the little mermaid is having a great time.
- 6:55Spark: Uh, what now?
- 6:56Vector: I see, mermaids hate humans.
- 6:58Griffin: No, no, no.
- 6:59It's not because she hates humans.
- 7:01It's because mermaids love storms.
- 7:03She's having such a great time riding the waves and watching the show.
- 7:06But then she remembers, humans can't breathe underwater, and they're
- 7:10not that great at swimming either.
- 7:12If the ship sinks, everyone will drown, including the prince.
- 7:16She sees him in the water struggling.
- 7:18He's strong, but his arms and legs are getting tired.
- 7:21All of a sudden, he's sinking.
- 7:23Spark: Save him.
- 7:23Do it.
- 7:24Use your big, beautiful tail.
- 7:25Vector: Yes, save him.
- 7:27His inferior non-metal body is puny and weak.
- 7:30Griffin: Vector, come on, we're land animals.
- 7:32Anyway, she does save him.
- 7:34She dives through the falling planks and sinking debris, grabs the prince,
- 7:37and holds his head above water.
- 7:39All night long, she swims with him in her arms, keeping him
- 7:42alive while the storm rages.
- 7:45Just as she's losing her strength, the sun begins to rise, and she sees land.
- 7:49Despite her weariness, she's dazzled by the scene.
- 7:53Mountains capped with snow, green forests, and a white building near the beach with
- 7:57lemon and orange trees in the garden.
- 7:59It's more beautiful than she'd imagined.
- 8:02She swims the prince to shore and carefully places him on the warm sand.
- 8:07She looks down at him lovingly, but can't tell whether he's dead or alive.
- 8:11Vector: She should try turning him off and then on again, or blow on him, or
- 8:15put him in an enormous bowl of rice.
- 8:18Griffin: If only it were that simple, Vector.
- 8:20All of a sudden, she hears people coming.
- 8:23She quickly swims behind some rocks and covers herself with seafoam
- 8:26so that no one will see her.
- 8:27She's worried she'll scare them if they do.
- 8:30A beautiful young woman comes out of the building and finds the prince.
- 8:33She leans over to see if he's alive, and the prince wakes up.
- 8:37Gazing up at this beautiful other woman, he smiles.
- 8:41He thinks she saved him.
- 8:42Spark: What?
- 8:43What a faker.
- 8:44Little mermaid, you saved him.
- 8:46Tell him!
- 8:47Griffin: She can't bring herself to do anything.
- 8:48She's worried he'll be afraid of her, so she keeps hidden as the
- 8:52other woman takes the prince inside.
- 8:54Finally, she swims back to her kingdom, heartbroken.
- 8:58Back home, she becomes quiet and sad.
- 9:01Her sisters ask what she saw up there, but she won't tell them.
- 9:04She goes back to that beach again and again, but she never sees him.
- 9:08Her only comfort is sitting alone in a little garden she keeps.
- 9:12Every day, she cries and hugs a statue of a young boy she
- 9:15rescued from a sunken ship.
- 9:17Spark: That is the saddest thing ever.
- 9:19Oh, oh!
- 9:20Let me guess.
- 9:20The statue turns into, like, a merman version of the prince, and
- 9:23they fall in love and get married and have lots of little merbabies
- 9:26and live happily ever after.
- 9:27The end.
- 9:29Griffin: Well, not quite.
- 9:31But she does finally tell her sisters about what happened.
- 9:33And luckily, one of them knows who the prince is and where he lives.
- 9:38Once the little mermaid finds his palace, she goes there every night,
- 9:42swimming right up into a little river that flows under his balcony.
- 9:46She watches him standing in the moonlight and sailing in his boat.
- 9:49Sometimes she even follows fishing boats just to hear the humans talk
- 9:53about how wonderful the prince is.
- 9:55Vector: I see.
- 9:56When a human loves another human, it is normal to creepily stare at them
- 9:59and follow them around everywhere.
- 10:01Spark: Hmm.
- 10:02Maybe not totally normal, but she's in love, so I'm gonna give her a pass.
- 10:06And this is perfect for her.
- 10:08Oh, oh, she's totally gonna sing to him while he's hanging out on the
- 10:11balcony, and then he'll lean super far over and fall in headfirst, and
- 10:15then he'll be all wet and drowning and looking really good, and she'll save him.
- 10:19And then they'll smooch and high-five, and he'll fall completely
- 10:23in love with her and get married.
- 10:25The end.
- 10:27Griffin: Good guess, but no.
- 10:29As the little mermaid watches the prince, she becomes more and more
- 10:32fascinated with the human world.
- 10:34It seems so much bigger and more exciting than the ocean.
- 10:37She has so many questions.
- 10:38Vector: Yes, me too.
- 10:40Like, what is up with pants?
- 10:42Griffin: Right.
- 10:44Anyway, one day, she asks her grandmother, "Do humans live
- 10:48forever?" " No," says Grandmother.
- 10:51"Humans are like babies compared to us.
- 10:54We live for three hundred years.
- 10:57The only problem is that when we die, we turn into sea foam.
- 11:01We don't have immortal souls.
- 11:04Humans die sooner, but their souls live forever in the stars.
- 11:08Lucky for us, we have gorgeous tails, and they have ugly feet." The little
- 11:13mermaid is devastated. " Why don't we have souls?" "We just don't. But
- 11:19we live longer, and we're happier, and we're better looking and can
- 11:23sing better, too," says Grandmother.
- 11:25" Vector: I like this granny.
- 11:27Griffin: The little mermaid asks, "Is there any way for a mermaid to get a
- 11:31soul?" " Only one way," Grandmother says.
- 11:34" If a human loved you more than anything, more than their parents,
- 11:38more than their own life, and if they married you, then their soul would
- 11:43flow into you and you'd share it.
- 11:45But that's impossible.
- 11:47Humans think our tails are ugly.
- 11:50They love their legs."
- 11:52Spark: Rude.
- 11:53Vector: Also confusing because legs are weird.
- 11:56Have you ever looked at a toe with those tiny nails?
- 12:00Freaky.
- 12:01Griffin: Okay, also rude.
- 12:03Anyway, so that night, the king throws a huge party at the palace.
- 12:07As usual, the little mermaid is asked to sing because everyone knows she
- 12:11has the best voice in the kingdom.
- 12:13And when she finishes, the ballroom erupts with applause.
- 12:16Vector: I too have an excellent singing voice.
- 12:19La, la, la, la…
- 12:20Spark: No!
- 12:21Griffin: Thank you, Spark.
- 12:22In that moment, the little mermaid is almost happy, but she can't
- 12:27stop thinking about the prince and the soul she'll never have.
- 12:30So while everyone celebrates, she sneaks out and heads to the
- 12:33home of the infamous Sea Witch.
- 12:36Now, nobody goes to the Sea Witch's neighborhood, and for good reason.
- 12:41It's past a bunch of massive whirlpools that suck in anything that gets too close.
- 12:46And if you get past those, you enter a forest of polypi.
- 12:51Now, these are super gross, half plant, half animal things that you
- 12:55do not want to mess around with.
- 12:57They look kind of like trees, except instead of a trunk, it's a giant
- 13:01sea snake with razor-sharp teeth.
- 13:04Oh, and instead of branches, it's hundreds of slimy arms that grab
- 13:07and kill anything that passes.
- 13:09Spark: I will never look at trees the same way again.
- 13:12Vector: It would be cooler if it had laser arms.
- 13:15Griffin: Mm-hmm.
- 13:16The little mermaid is terrified but determined.
- 13:19She ties her hair up tight so the polypi can't grab it, crosses her arms over
- 13:24her chest, and swims as fast as she can.
- 13:27She sees the polypi holding bones of drowned sailors, ship parts,
- 13:32and worst of all, a dead mermaid.
- 13:35But the little mermaid never quits.
- 13:38Finally, she reaches a clearing where she finds a house made of human
- 13:42bones collected from shipwrecks.
- 13:44And there is the sea witch, letting a toad eat from her mouth while
- 13:49poisonous snakes crawl all over her.
- 13:51Oh, and by the way, she calls the snakes her "little chickens".
- 13:56Vector: This must be customary in mermaid culture.
- 13:59Spark: Nope, hard pass.
- 14:01Griffin: Yeah, no, it's messed up even in mermaid culture.
- 14:04" I know what you want," says the witch right away. "You want legs.
- 14:11You want that prince.
- 14:12You want a soul.
- 14:15It is very stupid of you, but I'll help you, even though it will probably destroy
- 14:21you." The witch explains the deal.
- 14:25She'll make a potion that will split the mermaid's tail into
- 14:28legs, but there's a catch.
- 14:30Every step will feel like walking on sharp knives.
- 14:34She'll still be graceful.
- 14:36In fact, she'll be the best dancer anyone's ever seen, but it's
- 14:39gonna be really, really painful.
- 14:42" Also," says the witch, "once you become human, you can never be a mermaid again.
- 14:49If the prince marries someone else, the morning after his wedding, your heart
- 14:54will break, and you'll turn into seafoam.
- 14:58And one last little thing," says the witch,
- 15:02" My payment, it's not much.
- 15:05I want your voice.
- 15:07I'll have to take your tongue."
- 15:09Spark: What in the…
- 15:12Griffin: What is that sound?
- 15:13Vector: Sorry, I sat on one of my buttons.
- 15:16Griffin: Spark, what were you saying?
- 15:18Spark: I was asking, what in the world is she thinking?
- 15:20What kind of deal is that?
- 15:22Vector: The deal is she gets legs and a chance to earn a soul in
- 15:26exchange for eternal pain, no tongue, no speaking, no way to turn
- 15:30back into a mermaid, and immediate death if he marries someone else.
- 15:34Does that answer your question?
- 15:35Spark: It was a rhetorical question, Vector.
- 15:38No need to answer.
- 15:39Vector: I like to answer.
- 15:40Spark: She's not really gonna do this, is she?
- 15:43Griffin: Let's find out "But then how will I win the prince?"
- 15:47asks the little mermaid.
- 15:48" You will have your beauty, your grace, your expressive eyes.
- 15:53That should be enough," says the witch.
- 15:56Spark: That does not sound like enough.
- 15:58Griffin: Personally, I agree, but the Little Mermaid is determined to
- 16:01make it work, so she takes the deal.
- 16:04Spark: Noooooo.
- 16:05Oh, oh, maybe she actually has her fingers and, like, flippers
- 16:09crossed, and she tricks the witch, and she gets her super cool legs,
- 16:12but none of the terrible stuff.
- 16:14Right?
- 16:15Please say yes.
- 16:17Griffin: The witch makes the potion.
- 16:19She throws in snakes, poisonous toads, and all kinds of horrible things.
- 16:24She cuts her own chest and drips her black blood into it.
- 16:27The steam makes shapes like screaming ghosts, and when it's
- 16:31done, it looks clear as water.
- 16:34Then the witch takes the little mermaid's tongue.
- 16:37Spark: She really did it.
- 16:39Vector: I am going to be sick.
- 16:40Ha ha, just kidding.
- 16:41Only puny humans get sick.
- 16:44Griffin: Mm-hmm.
- 16:45Now, the little mermaid can't speak or sing.
- 16:48She takes the potion and swims back through the forest of polypi.
- 16:52This time, they're so scared of the potion, they shrink away from
- 16:55her, and she passes through easily.
- 16:58Back at the palace, the party is over.
- 17:01Everyone's asleep.
- 17:02The little mermaid wants to say goodbye, but she can't even speak.
- 17:06So with tears in her eyes, she swims up to the human world.
- 17:09Vector: I wonder how much of the ocean is made of mermaid tears.
- 17:14Griffin: That's a delightfully weird question.
- 17:16Vector: Thank you.
- 17:17Griffin: It's probably a really small amount.
- 17:19But here's the bad news.
- 17:20Spark: The prince is actually a merman?
- 17:21Griffin: What?
- 17:22No.
- 17:23That's the end of episode one.
- 17:25Spark: What?!
- 17:26Vector: Come on.
- 17:27Griffin: I know, I know.
- 17:28But don't worry.
- 17:28In episode two, you'll hear the second half of the story.
- 17:31Oh, at the end-
- 17:33Spark: No spoilers, please.
- 17:35Griffin: I wasn't gonna.
- 17:36Vector: You are a terrible liar.
