Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on? Everybody? Welcome into another episode of
- 0:11Speaker 1: The check O Daily.
- 0:12Speaker 2: It's Andrew Dechecko here, Eagles beat reporter for insidethebirds dot Com.
- 0:17Speaker 1: And I know that I did.
- 0:18Speaker 2: A podcast with Adam and Jeff right after Eagles OTA's
- 0:22Speaker 2: the second practice that was open to reporters to kind
- 0:25Speaker 2: of clue you all in.
- 0:26Speaker 1: On what happened.
- 0:28Speaker 2: But I'll do another one where I'll maybe explore some
- 0:31Speaker 2: elements that I didn't touch on when speaking to the guys.
- 0:35Speaker 2: And I mentioned the attendance and it is voluntary. It's
- 0:38Speaker 2: important to note that, but notably no Lane Johnson, Jalen Carter,
- 0:44Speaker 2: Fred Johnson, Holland Pierce, and Joe Tryon, Shoey Yinka, they
- 0:50Speaker 2: weren't in it.
- 0:51Speaker 1: They weren't in attendance at all.
- 0:53Speaker 2: But mandatory mini campus what you really want to focus
- 0:56Speaker 2: on next week as it pertains to that. But Makay Lemon,
- 1:00Speaker 2: Eagles first round wide receiver, did not practice with what
- 1:03Speaker 2: Quinya Mitchell eventually revealed to us was a hamstring injury.
- 1:07Speaker 2: I would imagine that that's something that the teams kind
- 1:09Speaker 2: of want to take a more gradual approach with and
- 1:12Speaker 2: not rush him.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Back onto the field. Hamstrings can be fickle, and so
- 1:17Speaker 1: because of that, you kind of want to take more
- 1:19Speaker 1: of a cautious approach.
- 1:21Speaker 2: But these are valuable reps, needless to say, for a
- 1:24Speaker 2: young receiver, so you would like to see him out there,
- 1:27Speaker 2: but sometimes those things just flare up and you don't
- 1:30Speaker 2: want to run the risk of that.
- 1:34Speaker 1: The Eagles first started out with the seven on seven.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Period, and during that period, on the very first play,
- 1:41Speaker 2: jaywen Hurst throws an interception.
- 1:43Speaker 1: To linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Junior. And I should note that
- 1:47Speaker 1: when the defense opened, they opened in.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Base, so Cooper dejen was aligned at safety opposite Drew mccouba.
- 1:54Speaker 2: And then when they shipped it to Nickel, Cooper Degen
- 1:58Speaker 2: moved down to Nickel and Marcus Epps came on as
- 2:04Speaker 2: he did in the previous practice that was open to
- 2:06Speaker 2: the media. I don't think it was a great day
- 2:10Speaker 2: for the offense, but I don't think it was a
- 2:12Speaker 2: poor day.
- 2:13Speaker 1: He was sort of uneven.
- 2:14Speaker 2: And again, these are ota sessions and they're installing a
- 2:17Speaker 2: new offense, so there's multiple reasons why you never The
- 2:22Speaker 2: context is so important when you're evaluating these things, and
- 2:25Speaker 2: I know you all are aware of that, but I
- 2:26Speaker 2: just want to kind.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Of reiterate it and underscore that there were some positive
- 2:31Speaker 1: moments with the offense.
- 2:32Speaker 2: And Jalen Hurtz delivered some bullets to Dallas Goddter, excuse me,
- 2:38Speaker 2: in the intermediary levels of the field.
- 2:40Speaker 1: There was a nice throw.
- 2:43Speaker 2: In a deep zone to DeVante Smith where he really
- 2:47Speaker 2: threaded the needle. There was another instance where I thought
- 2:51Speaker 2: that he delivered a strike down the left sideline to
- 2:55Speaker 2: a wide open Dallas Godder who got behind Drew mccoba.
- 2:58Speaker 2: But mccoba was unable to hold on to but Goddard,
- 3:01Speaker 2: I should say, was unable to reel in the pass.
- 3:04Speaker 2: So his best throw of the day certainly came on
- 3:08Speaker 2: a wheel route to Saquon Barkley. That was a very
- 3:10Speaker 2: long play, long connection there and so that went for
- 3:16Speaker 2: a touchdown. But Saquon was able to slip past linebacker
- 3:19Speaker 2: Zach Bonn and Jeremiah Trotter Junior.
- 3:22Speaker 1: In order to shake free.
- 3:24Speaker 2: But I thought by and large, there were there were
- 3:27Speaker 2: some moments where Jay went delivered the ball with timing
- 3:30Speaker 2: and accuracy. It wasn't all perfect, but that's to be
- 3:33Speaker 2: expected at this stage of the game.
- 3:35Speaker 1: A lot of under center looks.
- 3:36Speaker 2: There was some pre snap motion, a lot of tight
- 3:38Speaker 2: end usage as well, which shouldn't necessarily be a surprise
- 3:42Speaker 2: because McKay lemon wasn't in the mix, and Darius Cooper,
- 3:47Speaker 2: the Eagles second year wide receiver, I saw him participating
- 3:49Speaker 2: in the individuals, but I did not see him participate
- 3:53Speaker 2: in any of the team drills, so they were a
- 3:55Speaker 2: little light there at wide receiver. Really good opportunity for
- 3:59Speaker 2: guys like Hollywood Brown, Don Tavian Wigs, and even some
- 4:04Speaker 2: of the guys who were deeper on the depth chart,
- 4:06Speaker 2: like Samori Torre who just got to Philadelphia where Danny
- 4:10Speaker 2: Gray and I'm sure I'll touch on what Danny Gray
- 4:13Speaker 2: was able to do in practice in a little while.
- 4:16Speaker 1: But that was kind of the situation. I'm not noticing.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Anything drastic for those wondering, but there are some elements
- 4:25Speaker 2: of newness that you're able to dissect just from watching practice.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I imagine that you won't really be able to tell
- 4:32Speaker 2: until you get into the regular season, which is where
- 4:34Speaker 2: everything is kind of on the table.
- 4:37Speaker 1: But it was a practice that I felt was little uneven.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Jalen I mentioned through the interception there, Andy Dalton got
- 4:45Speaker 2: the second team work and Tanner McKee worked with the
- 4:48Speaker 2: third team on that particular day, which was Tuesday when
- 4:54Speaker 2: we were there, and Andy Dalton looked like a pro
- 4:57Speaker 2: commanding the offense. He's been in similar style offenses in
- 5:02Speaker 2: his career, so it's.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Not entirely new to him, and he didn't.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Necessarily have the best showing in the first practice that
- 5:09Speaker 2: we saw, but he was very sharp and crisp on
- 5:12Speaker 2: this particular day.
- 5:13Speaker 1: There were notable throws to the.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Left side line where he was fitting the ball into
- 5:19Speaker 2: a tight window, one to Samory Tore the wide receiver
- 5:22Speaker 2: Hollywood Brown on another one, both plays were tightly covered
- 5:26Speaker 2: by veteran cornerback Jonathan Jones. Jonathan Jones, just through two
- 5:30Speaker 2: practices is pretty sticky in coverage. I like what I've
- 5:33Speaker 2: seen from him, by the way, but Andy Dalton also
- 5:36Speaker 2: probably in his best throw of the day, delivered a
- 5:39Speaker 2: deep strike and fitted right in the scene there to
- 5:42Speaker 2: tight end EJ. Jenkins, who also got some fair share
- 5:46Speaker 2: of practice reps. Grand kaw Kata had a couple of
- 5:49Speaker 2: nice receptions in the practice, one in front of outside
- 5:53Speaker 2: linebacker Jose Ramirez. There was another one sort of a
- 5:57Speaker 2: traffic there. Eli Stowers got in on the action. He
- 6:01Speaker 2: made a nice catch over the middle on multiple occasions.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Cole Payton, for those wondering, got three reps during the
- 6:11Speaker 2: team period. On the first rep, it was a tuck
- 6:13Speaker 2: and run, not necessarily the greatest thing in the world
- 6:16Speaker 2: in a seven on seven drill.
- 6:18Speaker 1: You'd like to see the ball come out of the
- 6:21Speaker 1: hands there.
- 6:21Speaker 2: But on the second play was a check down to
- 6:24Speaker 2: the left to running back Damian Pierce, which netted just
- 6:27Speaker 2: very minimal, minimal pick up there. And then on the
- 6:31Speaker 2: third play that was where he threw it to Tours
- 6:34Speaker 2: and that was a nice connection there. He can throw
- 6:38Speaker 2: the ball a little bit better than I expected for
- 6:42Speaker 2: where he is, or he's expected to be at this stage.
- 6:46Speaker 2: It's odds seeing a lefty quarterback, but he does throw
- 6:51Speaker 2: a decent ball, which I'm basing it off of the
- 6:53Speaker 2: handful of reps. Three reps the other day, three or
- 6:57Speaker 2: four on the first practice, but also individuals where he's
- 7:01Speaker 2: throwing the football to receivers.
- 7:04Speaker 1: He's hitting a lot of those guys in stride more
- 7:06Speaker 1: often than not. But it is notable.
- 7:08Speaker 2: And I go back to what I said after the
- 7:09Speaker 2: first practice where they.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Were finding ways to get him involved.
- 7:14Speaker 2: You don't often see fourth quarterbacks get any sometimes any
- 7:18Speaker 2: reps in practice, but that the Eagles were able to
- 7:20Speaker 2: carve out a few reps I thought was interesting.
- 7:23Speaker 1: The second team safety is Andre.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Sam, Andre Sam and Michael Carter. Michael Carter is the
- 7:31Speaker 2: Eagles defensive back when they're in their diying package.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Greek Wohen was a standout on this day.
- 7:37Speaker 2: I mentioned Andy Dalton and I highlighted him on the
- 7:40Speaker 2: offensive side, but Rik Wohen in his second practice, you
- 7:43Speaker 2: see the length of speed.
- 7:45Speaker 1: That combination is so unique.
- 7:47Speaker 2: But there was a play that Jalen threw deep to
- 7:50Speaker 2: Hollywood Brown down the right sideline.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Rieg Wohen matched him step for step and forced.
- 7:55Speaker 2: The incompletion, didn't give up any ground he was in
- 7:58Speaker 2: his hip pocket. And then on a red zone series
- 8:01Speaker 2: where each unit got opportunities to punch it in, he
- 8:06Speaker 2: had a pass breakup in the end zone. And he's
- 8:10Speaker 2: going to be a huge addition for this football team,
- 8:12Speaker 2: needless to say.
- 8:14Speaker 1: And it seems like he's starting to take to it.
- 8:16Speaker 2: But the true test will be when you know, you
- 8:19Speaker 2: get to training camp, the pads come on and the
- 8:21Speaker 2: competition ramps up. You need to see how someone like
- 8:25Speaker 2: Rieguallan responds. Is he going to be assignmon sound and
- 8:27Speaker 2: disciplined or is it going to be some of the
- 8:33Speaker 2: player that we saw in Seattle, where you know, despite
- 8:37Speaker 2: all the talent, he just wasn't able to be a
- 8:40Speaker 2: consistent player. But right now, and you hear the players
- 8:43Speaker 2: talking Quinnon, Mitchell, Cooper, Dejen they're they're very excited to
- 8:47Speaker 2: have him, and you could easily see him having a
- 8:50Speaker 2: big season because that length should be able to narrow
- 8:53Speaker 2: throwing windows.
- 8:54Speaker 1: He's going to see a ton of targets.
- 8:56Speaker 2: There not a ton in with regard to the but
- 9:01Speaker 2: the red zone series to me was my favorite part
- 9:03Speaker 2: of the practice. And the Eagles also did mix in
- 9:06Speaker 2: special teams drives where Jake Elliott was kicking off to
- 9:11Speaker 2: Braidon Man. Braidon Man is quite an athlete. By the way,
- 9:14Speaker 2: I mentioned that he was running with Michael Clay, Rocko Underwood,
- 9:18Speaker 2: Jake Elliott, and Jonathan Bernard the previous practice.
- 9:21Speaker 1: And he was he's got he's got some bursts, he's
- 9:25Speaker 1: got some juice.
- 9:25Speaker 2: He was leading the pack and then he was fielding
- 9:28Speaker 2: kicks there and he mentioned Adam and I when we
- 9:30Speaker 2: did that show for WBCB Chickens and Pets in on
- 9:35Speaker 2: Rosevelt Boulevard.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I believe it was well.
- 9:37Speaker 2: He mentioned that he was in high school and he
- 9:39Speaker 2: played the linebacker. I want to say so, Braidon man,
- 9:43Speaker 2: great punter and pretty well rounded athlete.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 9:51Speaker 3: long lines, We've all been there. But when it comes
- 9:54Speaker 3: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is

- 10:42Speaker 3: great prices and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 10:45Speaker 3: one and up.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And then they did.
- 10:49Speaker 2: They worked in the red zone period where he got
- 10:52Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts and he was able to you know, he
- 10:55Speaker 2: was trying to fit it in the back of the
- 10:57Speaker 2: end zone there on One of those plays kind of
- 11:00Speaker 2: sailed on Davante Smith, but he did punch it in
- 11:05Speaker 2: on one occasion.
- 11:07Speaker 1: I believe it was to there was I'm going off
- 11:09Speaker 1: memory here. There might have been one to Hollywood Brown.
- 11:12Speaker 2: There is one to Wicks that there is a little
- 11:14Speaker 2: controversy because I think grieg One was seeking a pusho
- 11:18Speaker 2: off call that I'm not quite sure if he got.
- 11:20Speaker 1: But then they ran it back and.
- 11:22Speaker 2: That was the DeVante Smith pass that sailed. That was
- 11:24Speaker 2: their last rep. But the one that I wanted to
- 11:28Speaker 2: highlight was Tanner McKee threw a really nice pass on
- 11:33Speaker 2: what looked to be an out route or a drag
- 11:35Speaker 2: route to wide receiver Danny Gray and Danny Gray for
- 11:40Speaker 2: those who don't know, I've written about him, I talked
- 11:42Speaker 2: about him. He's a tremendous practice player by different accounts.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Talking to Quinnon Mitchell and Cooper Dejane and some other players.
- 11:50Speaker 2: They mentioned how effective he is in practice, that speed,
- 11:53Speaker 2: the explosiveness that he has, but he caught He's had
- 11:57Speaker 2: a couple of steps on cornerback to re castro fields
- 12:01Speaker 2: and was able to snare the pass in the right
- 12:03Speaker 2: corner of the end zone.
- 12:04Speaker 1: And I think what.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Stood out to me the most was that his teammates
- 12:08Speaker 2: were clearly excited for Danny.
- 12:10Speaker 1: They were you can hear him, They seemed elated.
- 12:13Speaker 2: They came over to him as he made his way
- 12:15Speaker 2: to the sideline and they were congratulating him. And he's
- 12:19Speaker 2: been around for a couple of years now, so the
- 12:21Speaker 2: sense I've always gotten is that he's very well liked
- 12:25Speaker 2: amongst his teammates, and because he delivers and practicing goes
- 12:28Speaker 2: hard every day, you can't help.
- 12:30Speaker 1: But if you're a player, be excited when when something
- 12:34Speaker 1: like that happens.
- 12:35Speaker 2: But that's sort of just some cliff notes version, some
- 12:38Speaker 2: odds and ends that maybe I didn't cover when I
- 12:41Speaker 2: was on with Jeff and Adam because we covered a
- 12:43Speaker 2: lot of other things.
- 12:44Speaker 1: But hopefully that gives you the insight.
- 12:46Speaker 2: That you need between those two podcasts about the ongoings
- 12:50Speaker 2: of the second open Oja practice to reporters, but that's
- 12:54Speaker 2: gonna do it. For this episode of The check O Daily,
- 12:57Speaker 2: I'm Andrew Decheco and I'll catch you all just one
