- 0:01Perfect conditions don't exist, only these do.
- 0:06There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:09Chad #1123 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:13yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:16you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:17This message is dedicated to Jerry Mills.
- 0:19Here's the upgrade you may be waiting for.
- 0:22Better conditions, but upgraded thinking knows the only
- 0:24conditions that will ever exist are present conditions.
- 0:28Here's the story. Christopher Nolan is the
- 0:31director of Inception, Dunkirk, and Oppenheimer.
- 0:34He shoots his movies in the real world.
- 0:36Real locations, real oceans, real weather.
- 0:39Which means the weather is constantly against him.
- 0:42Rain on the day of the big scene.
- 0:43Fog when he needs sun. Wind when he needs quiet.
- 0:46His answer? He shoots anyway, Nolan says,
- 0:49Quote, I'm always shooting no matter what the weather is.
- 0:52Just keep going, letting everybody in the crew and cast
- 0:56know that we're really serious about doing that, no matter what
- 0:59the conditions are in quote, Christopher Nolan shoots no
- 1:02matter what the weather does. In the book The Nolan
- 1:05Variations, it tells how he refuses to let his crew even
- 1:08look out the window to decide if they'll work.
- 1:12Hear that line again. His crew doesn't even look out
- 1:15the window. The weather has no vote on
- 1:18whether though they work. Hundreds of people show up
- 1:21knowing the day is happening, rain or shine, because their
- 1:24leader decided conditions don't get to decide.
- 1:28John D Rockefeller saw the opposite kind of person and
- 1:31warned his son about him. Rockefeller wrote to him about
- 1:34the passive man who, quote, wants to wait until all the
- 1:38conditions are perfect before taking action.
- 1:40In quote, his verdict was brutal.
- 1:43If you wait until all conditions are perfect, the opportunity
- 1:47will be given to others. And he told his son that words
- 1:50like tomorrow, next week and future all carry the same secret
- 1:54meaning never done. Waiting for perfect conditions
- 1:59is not patience, it's a costume that procrastination wears.
- 2:03You might remember Mr. d'amato from message 881, the 89 year
- 2:07old who walked five miles every single day.
- 2:10Mr. d'amato went to his doctor every year on his birthday.
- 2:13The doctor warmly greeted him and then he did his check up and
- 2:17he asked how old are you this year?
- 2:19Mr. d'amato proudly said 89 years old.
- 2:22The doctor said, wow, that's great, you're in such good
- 2:26shape, better than last year. What's your secret?
- 2:29Mr. D'amato? Simply stated, I walk 5 miles
- 2:33every day. Every day?
- 2:35The doctor asked. Yes, every day, Mr. d'amato
- 2:38shared. That's great, well done.
- 2:40Well, what do you do when it rains?
- 2:41The doctor asked. Mr. d'amato looked at him with a
- 2:44bit of confusion. I put on a raincoat.
- 2:49The better story to tell yourself is I use the conditions
- 2:53I've been given. The walk was never up for a boat
- 2:56for Mr. d'amato. Neither is your work.
- 3:00Don't give the weather a vote. Don't give how you slept a vote.
- 3:03Don't give your feelings a vote. Don't give the economy a vote.
- 3:06All sorts of variables will try to tell you why the conditions
- 3:09aren't right. I can tell you the conditions
- 3:11won't be right. They never are.
- 3:14The conditions will not be perfect today.
- 3:16There's no such thing as perfect conditions.
- 3:19They will be present. You have the present, that's all
- 3:23you ever have and that's all you need.
- 3:26Tell me a story of something you started in less than perfect
- 3:28conditions to from chad.smith@gmail.com.
