Speaker A: Andy and unsigned 518. It's a local music show and I think it's really great. He can play the bass, then roll a joint, then light the joint, then smoke the joint. He can drink a beer, then hang.
• 0:16
Speaker B: With the pros and walk his dog.
• 0:18
Speaker A: And pick his nose and be an unsigned by one.
• 0:22
Speaker B: Eric here from black tongue. Reverend, episode 26. I can't believe it was like 100 episodes ago. It was pretty, pretty weird going to some dude's house that I had never met before as a brand new band. Never played a show, only had a couple songs out. And in the year and a half or so since we've played, this will be our fourth show together, I think at single cut on the 18th. And, man, you were our first taste of how awesome the music scene is here in the 518. So you're doing great, great work for all of us bands here. Keep it up. And evil, a 518.
• 1:24
Speaker A: Calling. Look at motherfucker cuz here he comes and he's calling wherein he's always happy.
• 1:33
Speaker C: Welcome to Unsigned 500, eighteen's two year anniversary special. It's hard to believe that it's been two years, but May 17, which is today as this episode airs, May 17, 2022, was the very first episode of Unsigned 518 with Mikey Bash of the Sugar hold. Since then, certainly a lot of stuff has happened with the band, the sugar hold with my band, Troydo Band, with the podcast, with a lot, you know, a lot of the guests and the scene in general, like, a lot has happened. Mostly good things, some maybe not so great things, but mostly, mostly really good, positive things. The scene seems to be growing and thriving and everybody helping each other. But anyway, so this episode, what I'm going to do is last week I put out a call, I guess you could say on Instagram, that just said, you know, if you would like to say a word about unsigned 518 or just say hi to me or whatever, I was going to take some of those voice memos and put them in the episode. So throughout the episode, we will be going to some voice memos that some of you left me on Instagram, you know, congratulating me on the two year or just saying hi, whatever, but, you know, so those, those will pop in. I'm also going to play some music from some local bands that I've come across in the last couple years, and I'm going to check in with my very first guest ever, Mikey Bash of the Sugar hold. I'm going to do a full length interview with him. I'm also going to check in with my second ever guest, Chad fulwelling of the band eerie. And it's funny because the day that we recorded episode two, I had never met Chad and I was already a fan of eerie. So it was kind of like, wow, this is, you know, really neat. Like, I just started this, started this podcast in my garage. And day two, I've already got somebody that I'm, you know, well aware of and a fan of their music hanging out. And since then, Chad and I and all the guys in eerie and I and with the band, with short wave, we've all become friends in real life. You know, like, and I say that as if, like, you know, none of these friendships are real life. But I mean, you know, we've developed a deep friendship. So, you know, we're over at each other's houses and we've integrated friend groups and it was just kind of a cool thing that it was just, you know, second episode and I've made so many friends. I mean, literally every, I mean, every episode that I've done since day one, I've walked away with it with a friend. It's kind of how I feel, you know, like I know so many people now and, you know, it's just a really cool thing to be able to keep this going as a fan, you know, because I've always been in radio and I was always a fan of music. So, like, even in radio when it was supposed to be like, mmm, this is no big deal for me. It was always a fucking big deal for me. Talking into a microphone was a huge deal for me. It's something that I've wanted to do since I was an actual baby. There's pictures of me walking around with my sister's jump rope, talking into it as if it were a microphone. And that's just always been my thing. So because of, I guess, all of you listening, I get to to do that. And I know, you know, it's, I don't know, it's just a really cool thing. So I guess. Thank you for listening. I'm putting this episode together, I hope, for your enjoyment. Like I said, I'm gonna have music. I'm gonna have people checking in. I'm going to do a couple of full length interviews and I guess whatever else, I don't know, we'll see what happens. But I think we're gonna get started. I'm just gonna start off with some music. So this is a band I had on the show, you know, probably a couple months ago at this point. Have kept in touch. I actually, they came on my radar and I reached out to them. You know, a lot of the times people on the show will reach out to me, and sometimes I'll reach out to, and they were one of the people that I was like, I really, like, really like your shit and would really love you to come on the show. And the band is anacortes, and they just played a show recently with Plush and Daviria at Empire Live that, I mean, I saw the pic they were playing for. I mean, a fucking huge packed house at Empire live. So, like, they're really crushing it. I really like their music, and they're really cool people. So we're gonna listen to another sad song from Ana Cortez, and then we'll be right back to talk to Mikey Bash of the sugar hold.
• 6:37
Speaker A: Hi, Andy. It's Jesse here with Anna Cortez, a veteran member, I guess you could say an alumni of your show. Just wanted to give you a big thank you for what you do for the music scene here in the 518. You are awesome. We need more people like you, uplifting, supporting local talent. You're really, you know, you and your band have been great, and we really do appreciate you. So thank you so much for bringing that energy and, and happy two year anniversary of unsigned 518. The day you first came along, I swore I'd never write another sad song. Here's one more sad song for you. After everything you put me through and I couldn't hate you if I wanted to I tried to get something real to hold on to all I wants to get close to you and all I want is to get over you I clung to you so desperately with everything you took from me and I I couldn't hate you if I wanted to I try to give you something real to hold on to to give you something that you could be, want to. Oh.
• 8:51
Speaker C: So that was another sad song. Anacortes. And in the beginning, a little message from Jesse of Anacortes. And I super appreciate that message and all the messages that came through that we'll be hearing throughout the episode. Anyway, so right now what we're going to do is this is a phone conversation that I had with Mikey Bash a couple days ago. We recorded it ahead of time of the episode, but it's just, we're gonna, we're gonna check in, basically talk a little bit about where he was two years ago today, kind of where the band was, where the sugar hold was, where shortwave radio band was, where, you know, unsigned was and kind of what has happened, you know, an abridged version of what has happened in the last couple years leading up to now and kind of what's coming in the future. So let's go to the phone and talk to Mikey Bash. What's up, Mikey?
• 9:47
  Speaker D: Hey, Andy. Congratulations.
• 9:49
Speaker C: Thank you so much, man. It's. It's wild to think of, you know, like, two years, like, desert that long. And it also seems like a ridiculously long time.
• 9:59
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 10:00
Speaker C: And mostly, like, so much shit has happened in two years because, I mean, yeah, our bands were fucking babies, you know?
• 10:09
Speaker D: Absolutely. Yeah. We had just. We had just started, you know, playing out. That was, like, really the first year of us all playing out. We. I think we had started. It started playing out at the end of the year ahead of that. Right.
• 10:21
Speaker C: I did. I did a little research on, like, because our first gig, like, with Abby, was, I think, your second gig as sugar hold.
• 10:34
  Speaker D: Okay.
• 10:35
Speaker C: And that. That was. That bound by fate. And that was in February of 2021. And then Ryan joined the band shortwave. Joined, like, a week later, two weeks later, whatever. And then the podcast started in May. So, like, when we had the first episode of the podcast, like, you'd had a few gigs.
• 11:01
Speaker D: Yeah. Like, yeah, well, 2022, not 2021.
• 11:06
Speaker C: Oh, wait. Oh, shit. Fuck. Yeah. You're right. Yeah, you're right. Yeah, 2022. Yeah, 2022.
• 11:12
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 11:13
Speaker C: I'm like, shit. Fuck. Fuck. Yeah. So just about.
• 11:19
Speaker D: And I think. I think it was in January, too.
• 11:21
Speaker C: Was it January? I thought I had it. I thought I had it. Right. But anyway. Yeah, so when the first. When that first episode. Yeah, both of us on untime 518, it had been just months, a matter of months that you'd, you know, done some stuff and you just, you know, played the fucking eddies and. Did you know the proctors?
• 11:44
Speaker D: Yeah, we were on tv. It's pretty crazy. Yeah. That we came from there. That's right. Our band has my. You know, the sugar hold has also grown and morphed and changed a little bit, too. You know, we put out a record. We were working on a new ep. We will. You know, we won studio time. We. We played in Central park in Schenectady. That was awesome. We've. We've played sold out shows at no fun.
• 12:10
  Speaker A: And.
• 12:11
Speaker D: Yeah, man, it's. I listened back to the episode we recorded two years ago.
• 12:17
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 12:17
Speaker D: And you would. You would have thought we had been doing this forever.
• 12:22
Speaker C: Yeah. Sounds all right. Well, it was funny because, like, editing wise, and I don't know if it's apparent, but if you go back and listen to those earlier episodes. Like, the first, like, I don't know, probably 20 or 25 episodes, I edited them. So, like, every breath or every, um. And every, uh. That I could take out of it, I took out of it. And, like, now I'm just like, nah, nah, not doing that.
• 12:48
Speaker D: Whatever you're saying is going, yeah, maybe.
• 12:51
Speaker C: Like, some big flubs that might take something out, but for the most part, like, if you're like, yeah, uh, um. Uh, that's what's going in.
• 12:59
Speaker D: I'm pretty sure in every episode that I'm in, I'm like, take that out and then be like, no, no. But, yeah, man, it's. It's been pretty wild, and we've been our, like, it's still. Our bands are very closely aligned. We. You know, that's. It's. It's been well documented.
• 13:20
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 13:21
Speaker D: And some of those. The bigger shows, like, in Schenectady, you know, we were. We were on that together, and that was really cool.
• 13:26
Speaker C: Yep. And then. Same with, like, no fun. Just, you know, not even a month ago for the.
• 13:32
Speaker D: With new friends there, too. Admit meeting new friends, but with safety meeting.
• 13:37
Speaker C: Yeah, it was huge, you know? And, like, we were. We were both, like, kind of up there in the lineup, and, like, it was crazy to, like you said two years ago, we were, like, trying to get a gig and be like, well, some. Somebody bug us.
• 13:51
Speaker D: But it's. It's. It's interesting all the different people that you meet, too, along the way. I feel like shortwave has a song about it, but, you know, like. Like, when we did that first interview, we didn't know Kendra McKinley. We didn't know JB, you know, like. Like, haunted cat, you know? You know, you didn't. You didn't know of the Atlas or Jay Wood, you know, e block freaking.
• 14:16
Speaker C: So many bands. So many bands and personalities. Like, I mean, you know, in the last two years, I've added more friends than I've probably added in any, like, ten year period, you know, previously, because it's just like. Yeah, you know, so many people that I meet are just so cool and, like, you know, it helps everything, helps everything spin. So as far as, like, gigs, I know you would. You would said something like, you had a spreadsheet. Do you keep track of all your gigs?
• 14:50
Speaker D: I try my best to.
• 14:52
Speaker C: Yeah, because Ryan, like. And I didn't even know.
• 14:55
Speaker D: At least for the sugar hole. I've got it. I've got a pretty good spreadsheet that keeps track of, like, the date, the. You know, the venue, who we played with.
• 15:06
Speaker C: Yeah. And, like, that's what Ryan Shaw does. He keeps track of every. He knows how many gigs we played, where they were, who they were with, and, like, he's. So he's. He's the band historian.
• 15:18
Speaker D: Yeah. Yeah, so we keep, you know. Yeah, we. We keep things pretty. We're pretty good on the admin side of the sugar hole.
• 15:28
Speaker C: So I guess in looking through that list, what are like, you know, throw me a couple of. Couple of highlights from not even necessarily, like, you know, the band as a whole, but, like, you know, from. From a Mikey beige perspective, like, throw me some. Throw me some highlights of the last couple years.
• 15:48
Speaker D: Well, bacchanalia was a wild. Was a wild one. So that was in October of 22, so after the podcast that we did, right, so that was one that, like, James from the whiskey pickle put on in Troy. It was like multi venue, multi day. They treated the artists really, really well. It was awesome. We played at the Browns brewing malt room, which was like, downstairs at Brown's, like a small room. Lucas Garrett, Roseway. Hold on, honeys. E block. The sugar hold. And it went in that order and it just, like, built up all day long. And, like, by the time we went on, it was like a wild party. Matt and John were getting naked. It was, it was, yeah, that was like one of the first, like, that was one of the first demonstrations of nobody has more fun. We followed that up with the, like, literally the same weekend we went up to Lake George and played Frankie's wild in the trees, which was a huge one. In our. In that first episode, I talked about how. We talked about how I had worked in wrestling, and I brought up my buddy Mikey cheese, who's still around. Still my buddy. He was sending me on Facebook. Yeah. Well, he's. He. He literally right before we recorded this, and this is probably privileged, privileged information for your, your listeners only, but he is. He is getting a custom world cheddarweight wrestling championship belt. And he just sent it to me before this. But anyways, Mikey Cheese aside, he actually was the one that got us that gig for Frankie. He was working in some sort of, like, you know, collectibles shop, and Frankie came in to sell, you know, sponsorships and whatnot. And. And Mikey's like, hey, you ever heard of the sugar hold? Frankie's like, no. He showed him and Frankie booked us from that. So, yeah, really funny.
• 17:51
Speaker C: Like an hour a couple hours ago.
• 17:54
Speaker D: Yeah, he's coming to the hive soon, I think, so he's going to do a little something on the hive, I guess. Yeah, I'm just looking. There's a lot of single cut shows on here, so we talk about the friends we make, and even some of the venue people are become friends as, you know, sweet tea is. You know, you'll. I see her out all the time at a shortwave show at a sugar hold show.
• 18:14
  Speaker C: Yep.
• 18:15
Speaker D: Anytime you go to go to single cut, I definitely ask for. So those people are really awesome. Going to Avalon Lounge in Catskill is really, really fun. We've got one that's not quite announced yet, coming up this summer there. That's going to be dope. Always the no fun anniversary shows. Those are always really, really cool. It's more like. Yeah, a lot of times it's more like the venue itself that I get into or whatever. Or, you know, it's. We played York's party gras with, I think we. That was when Dan was on paternity leave, so we had Ben from the greetings on. On guitar for that. You know, we've had different people fill in Rob Deluxe, Rob Fleming from. From Roseway has filled in Ben from greetings, you know, that sort of thing. Yeah. You know, tons of. Tons of really, really fun stuff. We've gotten to play. A rare form anniversary party was really cool. Andy Palooza won.
• 19:20
Speaker C: Yep. Yeah. And the Andy Palooza two, as well as we record this, that's coming tomorrow. Because this is. Because it's funny how it fucking works, too, is because the two. The two year anniversary of this podcast is 517 2022, which is, you know, today. And then Andy Palooza 518 is tomorrow. And then my birthday is actually on the 20th.
• 19:44
Speaker D: Why didn't you release it? Why didn't. Why wouldn't you have just waited one day to release that first podcast?
• 19:49
Speaker C: It wasn't up to me, man. And, you know, it's funny, I didn't even, like, I didn't even realize at the time. Yeah, yeah. But it definitely wasn't up to me. And. And, you know, now that, like, it's like, regular episodes come out on Tuesday. That's just kind of like. That's how it was, like. But I didn't. I didn't choose that. It was just like, I, you know, the episodes, like, all right, whatever. Cool. And now I just.
• 20:13
Speaker D: I like it. I listen to him at work, so.
• 20:15
Speaker C: Yeah. And then I do the one on. On Thursday. Whatever. But, uh. But, yeah, it wasn't my. Wasn't my choice, but yet thinking back, and I'm like, mother, why didn't you. One time, 518. Airing 517. But whatever. Yeah, not my fault. Not my fault. Yeah.
• 20:42
Speaker D: So now looking back at, like, when I was thinking about it earlier, I was like, oh, that was just, like, the other day, you know, but, like, really wasn't.
• 20:50
Speaker C: Yeah. A lot of shit has happened with, like, you know, both bands really. It's like, yeah, yeah. Not even really, like. Absolutely. Because we still. And I mean, when you think about it, when the first episode of unsigned 518 came out, short wave had, I think, like, two original songs. That's it. That's it. That's, like, all we had.
• 21:15
Speaker D: One of them was the theme.
• 21:16
Speaker C: Yeah, one of them was. One of them ended up being the theme song.
• 21:20
Speaker D: It is still the outro, right?
• 21:21
Speaker C: It is still the outro. But, like, the simple machine jingle that Dave and John did is just so good. I'm like, I have to. Like, I have to use. And now, like, when I'm editing them, that's, like, my favorite part is when I'm putting the theme song in.
• 21:36
Speaker D: You listen to it every time.
• 21:38
Speaker C: I do. And then it's got that. I don't know if you've heard the, like, where they do that Andy Scullen. They do, like, this whisper thing at the end, and I take it out in the intro because it, you know, just as a fit. But every once in a while, I'll throw it in as, like, cutting up different segments. So you'll probably hear it on this episode. Maybe it'll be the outro to this. To this segment, but, yeah, it's funny.
• 22:06
Speaker D: And you'll leave it in.
• 22:07
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 22:07
Speaker D: Okay. Yeah. Okay. Or just the Andy Scullen.
• 22:10
Speaker C: Yeah, no, that's what I mean. Just. I'll isolate the Andy Skullen part and use that to separate segments.
• 22:16
Speaker D: Oh, I love it. Oh, that's great. Yeah, that's great. I still think you should get girth control to do your weekend update song, because I could write a really good, like, 32nd song.
• 22:28
Speaker C: Yeah, me too. I think that'd be fucking radio.
• 22:31
Speaker D: All right, calling them out right here.
• 22:33
Speaker C: All right, girth control. You have to write a weekend spotlight theme song for me. 30 seconds.
• 22:40
Speaker D: Unsigned. 518. Yeah, weekend spotlight, 30 seconds. They'll take up half the song just saying it.
• 22:47
  Speaker A: Right.
• 22:48
Speaker C: And they could say whatever they want through that. Their girth control.
• 22:53
Speaker D: You're right. They can do whatever they want.
• 22:55
Speaker C: And actually, you know, while we're here. While we're here, like, you know, because this is kind of a check in with. With both of us, I suppose. I want to say a little bit about how, what we've decided how we're going to record the ep. So after.
• 23:09
Speaker D: Oh, yes, this is fun news.
• 23:10
Speaker C: After tomorrow, which is the single cut show, like, as this, as this special airs after that, we're disappearing until I think we do have one on the books in September, like the first week of September. Whether or not we book something before then or not kind of depends on how much work we get done, I guess. But our plans are to do at least a five song ep of original tunes which are not written yet. For the most part. There's fragments of songs and whatever, but, like. And the big news, I guess, is that TJ Foster of eerie is going to be the producer on the album.
• 23:59
  Speaker D: So he's fantastic.
• 24:01
Speaker C: Leading the charge. And again, like two fucking years ago, would you have ever thought, oh, yeah, we're gonna go in and make a record with TJ? Like, yeah, no, I would have never thought that. We only had two. We only had two songs. Like, we didn't know what we were doing. We still don't know what we're doing, but.
• 24:18
Speaker D: Right, but that's. That's part of your charm.
• 24:20
Speaker C: Yeah. And then you guys already recorded it, right?
• 24:25
Speaker D: Like, yeah, yeah, yeah, we've, we've recorded it. Um, we went into White Lake in February where you came and you did a little, little catch up with us there. So. Yeah, we went in for a few days there. We recorded a few gang vocal type things a few weeks ago just to, you know, put some finishing touches on some setbacks along the way as far as, like, the mixing and stuff goes as just system wise stuff. We're back on it now, getting like, mixes and everything for the new songs and moving forward. So we'll probably have a couple singles out and then we'll put out the. Put out an ep.
• 25:03
Speaker C: So that'll be how many songs you guys put on it?
• 25:07
  Speaker D: Five. So nice.
• 25:09
  Speaker C: Perfect.
• 25:10
Speaker D: Three. Three really newer ones and then two that we've been playing for a while but just didn't. Weren't on the last record just because we didn't have time, really?
• 25:19
Speaker C: Yeah, I think we're going to put one on and, like, people who see us know which one we're talking about, but I think we're going to put one on. That's a live show staple that we don't have a studio version of. We've got.
• 25:32
Speaker D: Is it John? Is it Ryan song? Johnny?
• 25:34
Speaker C: It's not actually. Well, it actually might be. Maybe that one too.
• 25:39
Speaker D: That one. That's one of my favorites.
• 25:42
Speaker C: Maybe that one, too. Johnny sings that one.
• 25:45
  Speaker D: Johnny dope, man.
• 25:46
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 25:50
Speaker D: Wait, let's run away isn't recorded. It's only.
• 25:54
Speaker C: And on the. Our band show one. Yeah. We don't have a studio version of it, and we've. It's like this. The one of the earliest songs that we wrote, like, a very early song, and it's one of my favorite songs to play. Yeah. And, like, the crowd always loves it. Like, they usually start with, you know. Usually start with.
• 26:18
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 26:19
Speaker C: But other than those two live versions on the live EPs, there's. There's no studio version of it, so.
• 26:26
  Speaker D: Wow.
• 26:26
Speaker C: Yeah, wow. So we think we're gonna put TJ up to the task of creating a studio version of that and maybe even Johnny dope as well.
• 26:37
Speaker D: Yeah, that would be my request.
• 26:40
  Speaker C: Maybe we'll do a seven song ep. I don't know.
• 26:42
Speaker D: Hey, do a full length.
• 26:46
Speaker C: Yeah. I mean, maybe. Who knows? Yeah. I've already got artwork for an album.
• 26:55
  Speaker D: I've got a sticker. Yeah. It's inspiration. That's fine.
• 26:59
Speaker C: It is inspiration. Yeah. I like doing that stuff. So, anything. Anything else you want to. Want to touch on in the last couple of years or anything coming up, like, soon that you want to.
• 27:12
Speaker D: We've got some fun stuff this summer. I don't know how much of it is announced. We'll be announcing soon. We're going to be playing. I know they're playing at Andy Palooza, but Alec Lewis group and Jagaloons with the sugar hole. That. Great flats. We're coming back to great flats for one night. Little early show in June. That'll be June 14, I think. And then we'll do a troy night out at 518 craft in June.
• 27:40
  Speaker C: Nice.
• 27:41
Speaker D: Go down to Avalon and then hopefully a couple festivals we've been talking to, and we'll see if that comes through. But nothing set in stone there.
• 27:52
Speaker C: Cool. But definitely going to be a busy summer, I think, for all of us. And I think. I don't know. I just sense nothing but. Nothing but good things going into it. There's a lot of. A lot of good things happening in the area, so.
• 28:06
Speaker D: Yeah, man, it's good to be around right now. It's good time.
• 28:10
  Speaker C: It really is.
• 28:11
Speaker D: It's been a good two years again, congratulations, man. I'm really proud of you. I remember when you were first talking about getting this going, and I was like, that's an awesome idea. I'm proud to be an early supporter and frequent flyer. Glad to be on here to celebrate with you. You. Congrats again.
• 28:32
Speaker C: Cool, man. Thank you, man. I really appreciate that.
• 28:35
Speaker D: No problem. Love you, buddy.
• 28:36
Speaker C: Love you, too, man. All right, so that is Mikey Bash of sugar holds. Do you want to. Want to go out with a sugar hold song?
• 28:43
Speaker D: Yeah, yeah, let's do. Since we were just on aha, and I don't think I can get you that version, but let's play tv screen.
• 28:52
Speaker C: Cool. The aha, meaning the show that made you liars because I saw you on the tv screen.
• 29:01
Speaker D: Yeah, we decided that we were going to make an exception for public television. So there you go.
• 29:06
Speaker C: That's good. You know, that's. That's a good exception. Hell, yeah.
• 29:10
  Speaker D: Exactly.
• 29:10
Speaker C: All right, cool. Well, Mikey Bash of the sugar hold. And right now, let's hear tv screen, and we'll be right back on the two year anniversary special of unsigned five one eight.
• 29:29
Speaker A: You never see me on a tv? On the COVID of a magazine? I got just what I want? I got just what I need? I'm gonna sit up front? I'm gonna smoke some weed? I'm gonna take my time? I'm gonna write a song? I'm gonna make it mine? It should take too long? You ever see me on a tv screen? You'll never see me on a tv? I really need it? I made it? I really, really need it? You'll never see me in a magazine? On the COVID of a magic? I'm gonna change it up? I'm gonna hit record? I'm gonna light it up? I'm gonna take one more? I'm gonna get real drunk? I'm gonna play two? Course I'm gonna light it up? I've done it all before? I really, really need it? You never see me on a magazine? On the COVID of a magazine? Tv? You never see me on a tv? You never see me in a magazine? On the COVID of a magazine?
• 32:54
Speaker C: Happy second anniversary to unsigned 518. Thank you so much, Andy, for promoting and introducing so much of the talent.
• 33:03
Speaker D: In the 518 and bringing it to everyone's attention.
• 33:07
Speaker B: Keep doing your thing.
• 33:09
Speaker C: Hey, there's no one, you know presents. We're going to say congratulations on two years doing this. That's so epic. Thank you for everything you do for the local 518 music scene, and I'm so excited to see what you do in the next two years. Hey, Andy, it's Dave Graham from the bands Dave Graham and the disaster plan and watch reggie run.
• 33:26
Speaker B: Just want to say thank you for.
• 33:27
Speaker C: All that you do for the local music scene, and congrats on your two year anniversary of unsigned 518 it's a great podcast. I always enjoy listening to it. So here's to the next two years, and keep rocking, man.
• 33:52
Speaker A: I don't care anymore what you want me to do I don't care anymore what you try to put me through to leave was easy stay away even more I don't care what you gave me I just don't care anymore.
• 34:20
  Speaker C: I.
• 34:21
Speaker A: Just feel like letting go.
• 34:27
  Speaker C: Thought that.
• 34:28
Speaker A: I should let you know I don't care I don't care I don't care anymore it was tried and I forgot I don't care anymore if you return what I bought you it wasn't easy that part just wasn't true I don't care what you gave me just don't care we are through I just feel like letting go thought that I should let you know I don't care I don't care I don't care I don't care I just feel like letting go thought that I should let you know I don't care.
• 36:31
Speaker C: That is Dave Graham and the disaster plan with don't care. And that's actually a cover of my band's song, which was kind of cool. I still remember getting the letter. It looked all, like, legally, and it was. And I knew it was, like, something music related, because you have to, like, create a doing business as kind of thing. It's a long story, but anyway, I created a name, Scullen crossbones. And that's the only time I've used it on anything. And it was like, you know, to Andy Scullen, care of Scullen crossbones. I was like, what the shit is this? And I open it up, and, like, I'm reading it, and I actually had to call Dave Tahoe. Cause I'm like, what the fuck is this? And I broke it down to him, and he's basically like, oh, well, someone wants to do a cover of your song, and this is, like, a letter of intent, basically. Kind of, like, they don't have to necessarily ask permission, but they have to, like, let you know that it's there. And I get. I don't know, maybe you can reveal. I don't know. You know, I don't know how it works. I'm certainly not a lawyer. Anyway, so Dave Graham and the disaster plan were doing a cover of tone care, and in the letter, it, like, specifically said, like, you know, do not contact the artist, Dave Graham. Like, do not contact him directly for any reason. You know, any. Any correspondence needs to go through the lawyers. So the very first thing that I did is I found Dave on social media and I sent him a message. It was like, hey, dude, I think that's so fucking cool that you want to do a cover of our song. Like, I can't even believe what I'm. What I'm hearing. And, like, Dave was just such a really nice guy and like, we had a good conversation right out of the gate about that, and then I had him on the show and, you know, he's just a really nice dude. And he's in, you know, he does Dave Graham and the disaster plan. And then he has a band with his son called watch Reggie run, which I believe that how he described it was. It's like kids music that adults will like. And like, they've got an impressive catalog on Spotify, so I'll link it in the show notes. Not only Dave Graham and the disaster plan, but watch Reggie run. So go check that out. It's really, really good stuff. And also, not only did Dave just do a cover of one of our songs, he did an entire album called appreciate the 518. And what it is, is basically he would take songs that were more rockin songs and he would give them a more stripped down reimagining, and then he would take some songs that were more stripped down songs and give them a more rock imagining. And it was all 518 artists. And the name of the album is appreciate the 518. And he does covers of Cersei Girl, blue, eerie, Sidney Worthley, black Cat Elliot. I mean, just a bunch, a bunch of cool bands in the 518. So I will also link that in the show notes. So Dave Graham, the disaster plan, appreciate the 518. It's a really great compilation. I've listened to it quite a bit. It's fantastic. Not just because he did a cover of one of our songs, but because it's really great and he's a good dude. So go check it out. And before that was obviously a nice little message from Dave Graham himself. Also, no one, you know, presents and my friend Angela Taranjo with a. Some words of encouragement. So I appreciate all of you. We are going to get to my interview with Chad Flowling of the band eerie. He was the second guest ever on unsigned 518. Like I said, that's when we met and became friends. So that's coming up in a little bit. I do want to just play. Play some more tunes, though, if that's alright with you. So I'll play some more songs, maybe a couple more of the voice memos, and we'll get to the interview with Chad Flewling. And then I'm just gonna play. There's something that I just really want to do. There's a band that, you know, they weren't one of the first bands. They were kind of somewhere in the middle, but they hit, like, every sweet spot with me musically, you know, I really, I like that, the sound of, like eighties, nineties, like, straightforward, you know, three chord stuff. And I'm always been a big ska fan, always been a big punk fan, big skate punk fan. So I'm gonna play some music from a band that, that I've fallen completely in love with musically. And the guys in the band are also great. I'm not not in love with you, but, you know, that's another story. But I'm gonna play some music after the interview. And I don't want to say it's like my album of the year because that kind of makes it sound like I'm choosing favorites, but I'm gonna play a song from this band. I'll reveal it later, and I will say it's just a. A band and an album that you should check out. So it's not album of the year, it's just album. Andy says that you should certainly check out, so we'll get to that in just a little bit. But right now, gonna listen to some music from the band head sound. This one is called optimistic here on unsigned 500 eighteen's two year anniversary special.
• 41:54
Speaker A: Hey, dude, this is Stubi from head sound. We miss hanging with you and drinking aquavit. And Richard especially misses Charlie.
• 42:02
  Speaker B: I mean, Calvin.
• 42:56
Speaker A: You just like how she shouted. I wish I was better. I can. I just like sky just like the sun, how she shining. I wish I was better. I feel like I wish I was better. I can.
• 46:28
Speaker C: Andy, my man, just want to drop you a big congratulations on two years of unsigned 518. Feels like it's flown by. And what a, what a true treasure to the local scene. You have been, my friend. Giving a lot of people a platform that they might not had otherwise. It's a real treat. You're a great dude. Keep on doing what you're doing. I love you, bro.
• 46:50
Speaker E: Hey, Andy, former guest TJ foster here. I just wanted to call in and say thanks for everything you do, you know, not musically or for the scene like everyone else is going to say, but just in general, you know, you get up, you put your pants on one leg at a time, you pop on your orange hat, and you just go get it, man. You know, you're just a stand up, human being. And the show is great, too, you know, I love the show being on. It was awesome. It was fun. I'm still a little upset that I didn't get, you know, the hot towel and the full treatment that I was promised, but, you know, I'd come back, you know, if you asked me, I'd probably come back and have some fun at the dazzle den. Great name, by the way. Really, really cool. Anyway, congrats on two years. And, you know, just.
• 47:44
  Speaker C: Just.
• 47:44
Speaker E: I love you, buddy.
• 47:45
  Speaker B: You're the best.
• 47:47
Speaker A: Takes a lot of heart to speak up when there ain't nowhere to begin if you find it in your heart to do so, friend you'll never want for nothing again in the world is on fire the world is on fire the world is on fire again and you don't know where we ought to begin can we find a little time to make a men tell? What have we got to lose? We could find another planet for our kids but we probably fuck that one up to you here. The world is on fire the world is on fire the world is on fire again and you don't know where we ought to begin should have done more, should have done more shoulda, coulda, coulda done more with my life shoulda done more, shoulda done more shoulda, coulda, coulda done more with my life only some kind of sadist would want to be remembered for this. There are monsters out here among us and they're all wearing human skin here. The world is on fire the world is on fire the world is on fire again and you don't know if we ought to begin should have done more, should have done the world is on fire the world is on fire again, yeah the world is on fire the world is on fire the world is on fire again, yeah the world is on fire the world is on fire the world is on fire again should have done more, should have done more shoulda, coulda, coulda done more with my life should have, should have done more, should have done more shoulda, coulda, coulda done more with my life I got the radio on.
• 51:07
Speaker C: All right, so that was eerie, featuring Sidney Worthley with world is on fire and that it's off suburban tranquility. Reimagined some songs off of suburban mayhem into songs of suburban tranquility. And obviously, you know, eerie being a rock band. And that song obviously doesn't have, you know, drums and electric guitars and bass guitars. So, you know, that that's a lot of TJ put that together. But I think I will certainly play an eerie song with the full band before the show is over. But right now, actually, I want to play a song from an artist that appeared early on in the show that I think is pretty important to the show because she holds two distinctions. One, she is the first female guest to appear on unsigned 518, and she is also the first live performance here on unsigned 518. It's going back to June of 2022 on episode 13. And of course, I'm talking about Sabrina Trueheart, and she is just great. Like, I'm such a rising star, such a wonderful human being, and I really dig her music. So I wanted to play a Sabrina true heart song because again, you know, first female artist on the show, first live performance, and that's something that's embedded forever. Sabrina, they can't take that from you. That is your title. But I do want to say that I look at my demographics behind the scene, and I do see, obviously, that my audience kind of skews heavily male. And I would like to change that. I'd like to actively change that. I would like to get more female representation on the show, to come on the show, no matter what genre of music it is. I would like to see it more. Obviously, there's certainly been enough. Well, not enough, but there have been female artists on. But again, I would. I would really love to see, see more of a representation of the female talent in the 518. So if you're a female talent in the 518 and you want to be on the show, you know, let me know. This is one that she played live in the studio, you know, way back on episode 13. And I think I've played it maybe even on one of the weekend spotlight shows. But anyway, it's an amazing song. Hearing the stripped down version on the show, like I said, it was just her sitting there with two microphones on her, no effects, no anything. And it's just a great song, great performance. And then to hear the full produced song, like, they're two different things that are the same song, but, like, they're so enjoyable in their, in their own right. To me personally, anyway, mostly because of the. The significance of what the performance was to me, that, you know, to have my show up and running and to have a performance in my quote unquote studio was a fucking. It was a big deal for me, you know, like, it was really cool. And I've had several bands do, you know, I can do. I can accommodate anyway, like, simple acoustic performances, you know, basically a couple microphones pointed at you and go. And if that's your thing, like, you know, certainly bring that along. It's always, like, super cool. But anyway, this is holding on to something good. It's Sabrina Truehart. And then we'll be right back to talk to Chad flewling of the band eerie.
• 54:45
Speaker F: I wake up and think? I wonder what I think of me today? You're infamous for being no good? I'm famous for being misunderstood? But baby, it's been so long? Now the bad days are gone? You're still wanna run? But those years have done? Being a fool? Ain't something to be ashamed of anymore? They all say? I'm holding on to something good? I am? I'm holding on to something good? I am? I'm holding on to something good? I woke up today in a different place than yesterday? In my heart, in my soul? It's easy to hide away? When you get old? Maybe it's been so much? The bad days are gone? You still wanna run? But those years have done me a fool? It's nothing to be ashamed of anymore? They all say? I'm holding on to something good? I am? I'm holding on to something good? I am? I'm holding on to something good? Been so long now the bad days are gone? You still wanna run? But those years are done? It's something to be ashamed of anymore? They all say I'm holding on to something good? For what is? I'm holding on to something good?
• 57:35
Speaker C: All right. And we are back. We are here with Chad flewling.
• 57:40
  Speaker B: Hello.
• 57:41
Speaker C: How's it going, man?
• 57:42
Speaker B: It's going very well. How are you, friend?
• 57:43
Speaker C: I'm awesome. We have so much to talk about. I wanted to do this. Like I said, I just talked to Mikey bash of the sugar hold. He was episode one and you were episode two. And I think that the main difference between the first two episodes and the people that I had on is I knew Mikey ahead of time.
• 58:03
  Speaker B: Correct.
• 58:03
Speaker C: And, you know, have known him for years. And, like, our bands kind of started at the same time, you know, sugar hold and shortwave kind of at the same time or whatever. But, like, the interesting thing is that you were my second guest ever on the show, and that was the day we met.
• 58:19
Speaker B: It was. That was the first time I ever met you. And it was here at this dazzliest of dazzlies.
• 58:25
Speaker C: Yeah, it was in a different. Different space, different setup, but, you know, same. Same room, same vibe. But, like, since then, we've become super good friends.
• 58:34
Speaker B: Pretty, pretty good friends.
• 58:35
Speaker C: We're, like, in the same circle of friends.
• 58:37
  Speaker B: Yeah.
• 58:38
Speaker C: You know, we, you're friends with Bill and OCL. I mean, friends and their who happened.
• 58:43
Speaker B: To live next to me because, you know, we released a record in the last two years, and, you know, OCl bought it, not knowing that I lived in the house directly next door to him.
• 58:54
  Speaker C: Yes.
• 58:55
Speaker B: And now we hang out all the time.
• 58:56
Speaker C: Yep. Yeah. And that's. I mean, and did. I don't know if we did tell that story. No, we definitely didn't tell that story in the podcast because.
• 59:03
Speaker B: No, because suburban mayhem wasn't, it wasn't even out yet.
• 59:05
Speaker C: Wasn't even out yet.
• 59:06
Speaker B: But, yeah, yeah, you just got the two second cliff note of, well, we.
• 59:11
Speaker C: Can go a little little deeper with it. So, my friend OCL, he was a fan of the band, correct? Before the podcast?
• 59:19
Speaker B: Well, no, because he. Oh, he was before the podcast.
• 59:22
Speaker C: Or maybe it was on the pod.
• 59:23
Speaker B: I think he. Because I think what he said was he listened to the podcast because it was your second.
• 59:30
Speaker C: But I know, like, on my Spotify, you know, he's one of my Spotify friends, and I would see him listening to Erie all the time. Yeah. Like, you know, and he was like, I really love this band. Like, you know, I'm really into them, like, digging them. And then when you were putting suburban mayhem out, he bought the vinyl, right?
• 59:46
Speaker B: So I'm at work, and TJ is like, hey, I think your neighbor bought our record because the address was the house directly next door to me. And so I hadn't met them at this point yet because they moved in, like, during peak COVID, and we were just never around. And the house they were in was. Has always been renters the entire time we've lived there. So, like, we were never, we tried to meet a couple of them. We're like, they were rude. So we're like, I'm not wasting my time on renters, not knowing that they had bought the house. And so I came home from work that day, and I had gotten my copy of the record, and so I hadn't listened to it yet. So I just took it next door and, like, knocked on the door and was like, hey, why? I texted you as well. I was like, hey, I see you're friends with this guy named OCl Delagarza. What's that all about? And he's like, oh, yeah, him and his husband Bill are, like, my closest friends. And I was like, oh, well, he just bought our record, and. Yeah, and so you said you wanted to text him, and I was like, no, I'm gonna go deliver this by hand and introduce myself, like, like. And you said, okay.
• 1:00:58
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:00:59
Speaker B: And so that's what I did. And I took a self.
• 1:01:03
Speaker C: You took a selfie.
• 1:01:04
Speaker B: Selfie with the doorway.
• 1:01:06
  Speaker C: Surprise.
• 1:01:06
Speaker B: Yep. Yeah. He looks. He was like, what is happening right now?
• 1:01:10
Speaker C: Hi, I'm the drummer from Erie. I live right next to her.
• 1:01:13
  Speaker B: Yeah.
• 1:01:13
Speaker C: Here's the record that you ordered online that wasn't supposed to come for another six weeks or whatever days.
• 1:01:21
Speaker B: It was like a Tuesday. I know. The record came out on Friday.
• 1:01:24
Speaker C: Oh, nice. But still, it was awesome. And then now you guys hang out all the time.
• 1:01:28
Speaker B: All the time. Cause we live directly next door to each other, so it's pretty tight.
• 1:01:31
Speaker C: So that's just one. One magical thing that happened from this podcast episode two years ago. And as I'm releasing the episode, like, we're obviously recording it a little bit before it'll come out. You know, a couple weeks or week, week or so before it'll come out. But on. It's May 17 is the actual two year anniversary of the first episode that dropped. So a lot of stuff has happened in two years. And, like, this episode, like I said, will come out, right, on May 17. And tomorrow, as we listen to this, or as it comes out, is 518, right.
• 1:02:11
  Speaker B: Which we're ripping a show.
• 1:02:13
Speaker C: We're ripping a show. My band will open, and then Alec Lewis Black song Revin, and then Erie's headlining. And again, that's something that two years ago today, I would have never in a million years. Because even when I first got going with the show, like, a lot of the bands that I had on are bands that, like, I knew or knew of or certainly once they were coming on the show or had come on the show I started listening to. So I started, like, being a fan of all these bands, you know what I mean? So, like, I was a fan of eerie before. Like, I was friends with all of you guys, you know what I mean? And it's. I don't know. It's just been fun. Think that. Yeah. Like, how it could just turn into, like, these real friendships, right? I mean. Oh, yeah, that band's cool.
• 1:03:01
Speaker B: Like, they're nice people, but, like, no, like, we're actual friends that actually give a shit about each other and tight.
• 1:03:07
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:03:08
Speaker B: My son's favorite band is shortwave.
• 1:03:10
  Speaker C: I love that.
• 1:03:12
Speaker B: He literally walks around singing let's run away all the time.
• 1:03:16
  Speaker C: That's awesome.
• 1:03:17
Speaker B: Usually as he's running away.
• 1:03:19
Speaker C: Right. Well, you've sent me videos of him. He was, like, sitting at the table, coloring and singing. Shortwave songs. I was like, that's awesome. Even. That's just amazing. But so, like, what. Let's think of what else is, you know, because I guess I want to do, like, a retrospective, kind of, like, where we were two years ago, what's kind of happened, where we are now and where things are going. Looking forward, because, like, as our, you know, lives and bands intertwine, there's certainly things coming up. You know, I've been talking about our ep. We're probably gonna do with. With TJ, right? Not even probably. We'll. We're gonna make that happen. But what else? Let's see what else big has happened. There was suburban mayhem.
• 1:04:06
Speaker B: Yeah. We released a record because when you.
• 1:04:09
Speaker C: Were on the only, it was, I don't want to live, don't want to die.
• 1:04:13
  Speaker B: Right.
• 1:04:14
  Speaker C: Album that was.
• 1:04:15
Speaker B: Yeah. So there was nothing with the whole band at that point released.
• 1:04:21
  Speaker C: That's wild, actually.
• 1:04:24
Speaker B: I don't know. Maybe we did have something, I think. Because I don't remember.
• 1:04:27
Speaker C: Think I played. I played. Can't stop running on the episode if I'm okay.
• 1:04:32
Speaker B: So that was the only thing that we had out.
• 1:04:34
  Speaker C: Okay.
• 1:04:35
Speaker B: I think that was when it was released. Yeah.
• 1:04:36
Speaker C: And that was out as a single, right?
• 1:04:39
Speaker B: Yep. And then we re released it on the record.
• 1:04:42
Speaker C: Yeah. So let's talk. Let's talk a little bit about suburban mayhem, because, like, as we're recording, this is. As that era is kind of buttoning up. And you. Like I said, as we're recording today. Yesterday.
• 1:04:58
  Speaker B: Yeah.
• 1:04:58
  Speaker C: Before.
• 1:04:59
  Speaker B: Yes.
• 1:04:59
Speaker C: When you did all the drums, I just. The album that's not even out yet.
• 1:05:03
Speaker B: Right. We. I just finished. I did 13 tracks over the last two days down at the Bunker recording studios in Cairo, Catskill, New York, with Mike Dwyer, who's absolutely incredible. He's an absolute genius to work with. It was. It was. I'm still, like, coming off that, like, I can't believe what happened in this room. Happened in this room. And, like, I'm very excited to see where this all goes because, like, we spent time figuring out everything, like, down to, like, snare drums. Like. Cause I brought everything I had down. Mike had a bunch down there. I used nine different snare drums on 13 songs. Like, it was absolutely insane.
• 1:05:54
Speaker C: Yeah, there was. On your Instagram story, I made a couple of funny comments. One, it was, like, the appropriate numbers of stares. None, just a cajone. Then what? It was, like, plot twist. All of these are the snare from Metallica's St. Anger.
• 1:06:18
Speaker B: Yeah, that's nine st. Angers. It's pretty good. But no, even just right now, where these songs are from, where this band is came from. The last two years, we have been working nonstop, but just getting better and better shows. And, you know, TJ is an absolutely insane songwriter, and, like, the way he just, like, the way his mind works and gets things and ideas together and organizes everything, it's like. It's just been really awesome. So.
• 1:06:57
Speaker C: And so how long was the process from, like, the beginning of. And, you know, you don't have to go into details if you don't want it, but just, like, a rough. Like, just. And almost, like, out of my own curiosity, because we're about to do, like, I mean, we want to do five songs, which is, like, half of, you know, half a record, but on a timeline, like, from writing to polishing the songs to recording to releasing. What kind of timeline are you looking for for when you did suburban mayhem?
• 1:07:27
Speaker B: On suburban mayhem, we had. The songs that we were working on for that album took two years to put together because we started right in 2021 when COVID was still happening. TJ had sent all the tracks out, and we were going through everything and writing our parts, and then. But we weren't getting together that often. Still, at the point of writing and getting everything that together, because we all have kids, and we're all. We're being, you know, cautious due to the state of everything. And so then we got. We started playing more shows, and we started getting more rehearsals and going through that. But, yeah, that was a two year process to do that. I mean, on that one, I did the drums in, like, three separate recording sessions, and the first one was in, like, February. I was in TJ's garage. It was, like, 30 degrees outside, so it was freezing. And so there was, like, different sound, like, you know, differences in the sounds of the drums because, you know, I used different head. I had different heads on stuff, and, like, different time. Like, you know, it was three different times I set up to record, so it just came out. You. I don't think other people can hear it, but, like, I hear the differences, and, like, oh, I know that was a cold day, and that was, like, you know, that one was in May, and then that wasn't in August, you know? So, like, we spent a lot of time on that one, but this next one, we have really streamlined the process, so that's gonna be nice.
• 1:09:04
Speaker C: And so where are you at with, you know, I know. Like, like I said, your drum. I mean, and your drums are basically. They're finalized.
• 1:09:11
Speaker B: They're yeah, yeah. No, everything I did yesterday is what's gonna be, for the most part, on the record. I don't know, unless they change something after the fact. But it's gonna. You know, they're gonna mix and master everything.
• 1:09:21
Speaker C: But. And is that. Cuz, you know, whenever we've done song, it's usually like, drums first.
• 1:09:27
Speaker B: Right. So I got all my stuff, and so Levi was down there on Saturday, and he tracked some bass as well. And actually, right now, TJ and Levi are down there and finishing up the base. That were true. So the plan is we're gonna have every. All the bass done, and then, because we're working with Alec Lewis on this record, he's helping us produce it. Well, he's producing it. That's not. He's not helping us, but. So then we're gonna finish up guitars and vocals and everything at his home studio.
• 1:10:01
Speaker C: Gotcha, honey. Home studio.
• 1:10:03
Speaker B: Yeah, but we. We wanted to have an outside voice to kind of throw everything at and get, you know, I guess, like a non affiliated person.
• 1:10:20
  Speaker C: Sure.
• 1:10:20
Speaker B: You know what I mean? Like, just to have that extra set of ears who we also respect. Like, Alec is incredible at what he does, like, from doing live sound to everything. Like, he's very impressive, and we're super stoked to work with him.
• 1:10:36
Speaker C: Yeah, yeah. He did engineered plastic when we. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, plastic. And then Dave mastered it. Is that the correct.
• 1:10:48
Speaker B: Correct. Maybe, like, mixed in master.
• 1:10:51
Speaker C: Yeah, mixed and mastered. Yeah. But, yeah, Alec is awesome.
• 1:10:56
Speaker B: He's really awesome, and he's really, really.
• 1:10:58
Speaker C: Good at what he does and, like, a super cool dude.
• 1:11:00
Speaker B: Yes. So, yeah, so we're. That's where we are. We're finishing that up, but we have to have this record out by the end of the year because we did something fun and applied for a grant through the Saratoga Arts foundation, and we got a grant. So part of the grant is we have to have the record completed by the end of this year.
• 1:11:24
Speaker C: And is that something. The. Applying for the grant, is that, like, something, like. Do you think that's, like, obtainable for, like, most bands, or is there, like, a certain.
• 1:11:35
Speaker B: I don't really. I don't really know. We. So I know Angelina Valente got it.
• 1:11:43
Speaker C: Last year, which just, like, one or a couple a year, they.
• 1:11:48
Speaker B: They do it, like, once a year, they give these out. And we. We applied and, you know, explain what our goals were to do with this new record and where we were and what we had to do. And we are super thankful that we got, you know. Got it.
• 1:12:08
Speaker C: Yeah, that's awesome. So, I mean, fuck it. I say, everybody just try to get it.
• 1:12:12
  Speaker B: Yeah, absolutely.
• 1:12:13
Speaker C: Try to get it. And that would be. And to me, like, because, I mean, you've known me, like, for a couple years now, and, like, I think, you know, my style is to typically to, like, just, like, set this goal, make it public, and then hit it right. And, like, that's what I'm doing with the CP. Like, I was just, you know, and obviously, as a band, we decided we were gonna do this right. It was just like, all right, I'm gonna put it out there, and then we have to do it. Yeah. So getting, like, a grant like that, where it's, like, it has to be done, right.
• 1:12:42
Speaker B: Like, it literally has to be am on 1231. If it's not out by then, forget about it. Yeah.
• 1:12:49
Speaker C: And, like, to me, that would be just such a, like, all right, here we go.
• 1:12:53
Speaker B: Well, and so we. That's. We applied for it last, like, winter.
• 1:12:59
  Speaker C: Okay.
• 1:13:01
Speaker B: And we. Knowing that that was a condition of it, we went into this year with that mindset. So that's how we, like, we haven't played this. So also, back to this on 518. That's our first show in the area. All year, almost six months in, we've played no shows.
• 1:13:21
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:13:23
Speaker B: So we've just been working on writing. So it was weekly sessions that we would get in, and we were under the expectation. We were working as if we were getting the grant, and then we got it. So it's very good that we worked as if we were getting the grant, because now we're ready to rip.
• 1:13:43
Speaker C: And, like, in talking with TJ a couple weeks ago and on his episode, I think it was episode number 120. If anybody wants to go back and check it out, he was talking about how you guys were kind of working on, like, a couple songs at a time. Like, you know, you'd be like, yeah, these. These two songs. And that's, you know, for anybody who's putting together, like, when. You know, because when you're doing singles, it's one thing, but when you're putting together this whole thing, you have to look at it, you know, broken up or segmented.
• 1:14:13
Speaker B: So one thing that works really, really well in our advantage in Erie is that both TJ and Matt are, like, data nerds. So, like, they just organize everything. We had, like, spreadsheets. We have spreadsheets for everything. Like, TJ and Matt love spreadsheets. And so they. I mean, we had every week organized starting in January. Going into January, we had all of our rehearsals lined out with. Because we. TJ put all the songs that we're working on now up in the drive. Our drive folder last. It was not long after sperm mayhem came out when these songs started popping up.
• 1:15:02
  Speaker C: Right.
• 1:15:02
Speaker B: And so, you know, we kind of. They were out there, but we weren't. We were not focusing on them because we were doing, you know, everything we had to do last year. But then we figured, you know, years over, what's. What's the next thing? So. But we had every rehearsal mapped out to two songs on spreadsheets that we just kept going because, like.
• 1:15:26
Speaker C: And I don't know if, you know, when we're doing rep, like, I want to. You know, because I'm an organized person enough, I guess. Yeah. It comes to certain things, sort of. I know I'm not really selling it, but, like. But, like, I think I want to approach it that same way where. You know, where. Because we're. Right. We're trying to write the song.
• 1:15:44
  Speaker B: Right.
• 1:15:45
Speaker C: Like, the songs that are going on the album as of, like, right now don't fucking exist.
• 1:15:50
Speaker B: Right. You have to make them appear somehow. So.
• 1:15:53
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 1:15:53
Speaker C: So I think approaching it like that, where it's, like, we gotta focus on it.
• 1:15:57
Speaker B: This is our, like, having goals. Like, everything lined out, like, looking at it big picture.
• 1:16:04
  Speaker C: Right.
• 1:16:04
Speaker B: Like, we have to be. By the end of this, we have to be done.
• 1:16:08
Speaker C: Yeah. And, you know, we're only gonna try to do five songs, but for us, that's.
• 1:16:12
Speaker B: Well, and you're trying to do it in, like, three months, too, so you have to. You have to just.
• 1:16:18
Speaker C: Yeah. And again, right now, like. And it's kind of wild at the point where we're at now because I feel like we're, like, on the roller coaster where we're climbing up because we have, you know, another gig coming up before we are even take this break. So, like, you know, we still can't focus on the recordings.
• 1:16:36
Speaker B: Yeah, you're just trying to, but, yeah.
• 1:16:38
Speaker C: Come, come May 19, where we're shutting off, and we don't have anything booked until September.
• 1:16:47
Speaker B: We don't. We have May 18, and then we're.
• 1:16:50
Speaker C: Doing a private party July, but that doesn't count. That's just gonna be a fucking party to get together.
• 1:16:57
Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We've. We've got a couple. We're gonna go play a show in Vermont next on the 24th. So the week after, Annie Palooza will be in Vermont at Charlie O's with. I can't with embers and Umbra is the band that we're gonna be with that. We, like, I met their drummer. He used to live out here. I sold him an interface. And we've kind of became like, we were. We were gonna become friends, but then he moved. But we've been social media friends for, like, four or five, six years now. It's been a while. And his band's doing stuff. So I was like, hey, I'm in a band. They're a band. Like, so we're gonna go out there. It'll be our first show out in Vermont. And then where. What part of Vermont is in Montpelier?
• 1:17:44
  Speaker C: Okay, nice.
• 1:17:45
Speaker B: Um, so it's world famous. Charlie O's is the name of the venue, but, um, it's gonna be fun. But we have that, and then we don't really have a ton else after that because it's just getting this record finished and.
• 1:18:00
Speaker C: Yeah, and, I mean, it's a lot of work, you know, like, a lot of work. And if you have.
• 1:18:04
Speaker B: I'm just very excited because all my work's done, too.
• 1:18:08
Speaker C: It's all on you guys.
• 1:18:10
Speaker B: Yep. I did what I'm supposed to, so, yeah, that's.
• 1:18:13
Speaker C: That's fucking awesome. So, you know, we got suburban mayhem came out in the last two years. Suburban tranquility, which was, you know, stripped down versions of. Was it five songs?
• 1:18:27
Speaker B: Five or six, I can't remember, off of, I think, six.
• 1:18:30
Speaker C: Suburban mayhem with some guests artists and stuff. And again, if you want to hear about suburban tranquility, episode 120 with TJ Foster, you can hear about that. But I guess unless there's. There's something else you want to throw out there.
• 1:18:43
Speaker B: No. Thanks for having me on two years ago because it's been pretty rad.
• 1:18:48
Speaker C: It really has. It's funny because, like, that first night, the first time we played a gig together, when, like, I met the rest of the band and shortwave met the rest of. Man, we all met, like, we were all like, yeah, we're now all best friends. And it was kind of like, we.
• 1:19:04
Speaker B: Were like, yeah, okay, whatever. But like, no, no, literally what happened?
• 1:19:07
Speaker C: Yeah, cuz members, you know, all the members of our band and members of your band were, like, friends in real life. Yeah. I mean, which is. And again, not that I'm not friends with, because almost all the bands I'm friends with, but, like, you know what I mean? I don't have most of them over to my house on just any.
• 1:19:24
Speaker B: On a random Monday.
• 1:19:25
Speaker C: Totally. You know, shit like that. Like, yeah, close friends.
• 1:19:29
  Speaker B: Oh, yes.
• 1:19:30
Speaker C: Yeah. Fuck yeah. All right, well, I guess if there's nothing else, Chad flewling of the band eerie and we're gonna get back to the show. Thanks, man.
• 1:19:39
  Speaker B: Thanks, homie.
• 1:19:40
Speaker A: Andy Sculler and Scullen.
• 1:19:45
Speaker C: All right, so that was my conversation with my good friend Chad flewling, drummer of the band eerie. And earlier I played the tranquility version of World is on Fire with Sidney Worthley and was saying, obviously they're a rock band and that's a stripped down version of it. So I wanted to play mostly because, like, when TJ first sent over the album, I told him that one of the cool things that I, that I enjoyed from it is I would listen to, you know, the original version and then I would listen to the tranquility version and get the differences between them and the similarities, you know what I mean? I thought it was a really cool thing to do and I told him that and he liked that. So I'm actually going to play. I played World is on fire and I'm going to play another version of world is on fire and this one is not the one that appears on suburban mayhem. This one's actually live, so it does not have cause. Sydney is on the studio version as well, but not on this one because this one is live, recorded live at our band show down in Poughkeepsie, which is a super cool thing that you should totally check out. Our band did it. Eerie did it. Snorts did it. I know there's a bunch of other bands coming up that are going to do it. It's a very cool thing. So just like our band show on YouTube and we were actually, we, shortwave were the first ones to take the visual ep, as they call it. And they released it as just a regular live vp on Spotify, suit and Apple and all that other stuff. You can find it everywhere. So it's just shortwave radio band live on our band show and it's a. I think it's eight songs, eight of our original tunes performed, completely live, blemishes and all, although we crushed it. But you could find that on all the streaming services and I'll probably link to that in the show notes. I have a feeling it's going to be lengthy show notes on this episode, but no, we're good. This is world is on fire, the live on our band show version. It's eerie.
• 1:22:04
Speaker A: Takes a lot of heart to speak up when there ain't nowhere to begin. If you find it in your heart to do so, friend you'll never want for nothing again. Yeah, the world is on fire the world is on fire the world is on fire again and you don't know where we ought to begin.
• 1:22:33
  Speaker D: Can we.
• 1:22:34
Speaker A: Find a little time to make a men's hell? What if we got to lose? We could find another planet for our kids but we probably fuck that one up, too yeah the world is on fire the world is on fire the world is on fire again and she don't know where we ought to begin should have done more, should have done more, shoulda, coulda, coulda done more with my life shoulda done more, shoulda done more, shoulda, coulda, coulda done more with.
• 1:23:08
  Speaker D: My life.
• 1:23:17
Speaker A: Only some there are monsters out here among us and they're all wearing human skin, yeah the world is on fire the world is on fire the world is on fire again and you don't know if we ought to begin, yeah shoulda done more, shoulda done more, shoulda, coulda, coulda done more with my life shoulda done more, shoulda done more, shoulda, coulda, coulda done more with my life I got the radio on then the bomb's dropping right outside at the feet of my heart, yeah the world is on fire the world is on fire the world is on fire again, yeah the world is on fire the world is on fire the world is on fire again, yeah the world is on fire the world is on fire the world is on fire again, yeah the world is on fire the world is on fire the world is on fire again should have done more, should have done more, shoulda kitta kiddie should've done more with my life should've done more, shoulda done more, shoulda, coulda, coulda done more with my life I got the radio on and the bomb's dropping right outside that's the beat of my heart thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump.
• 1:25:14
  Speaker F: Hey.
• 1:25:29
Speaker C: All right, so that was world is on fire, Erie from our band show. And earlier I was talking about how, you know, there was an album that stuck out to me, and I didn't want to say album of the year because I didn't want it to be playing favorites. But this is just one that I'm telling you that you should check out, because I've been listening to it a lot. It's fantastic. Beginning to end. It's very ambitious. You could say it's a 25 song album. And it's funny because in the beginning, when the band Girth control is who I'm talking about, but when they were on the show a year and a half ago or more, they were talking about the album. And I believe they were like, oh, yeah, it should be out in a couple months. And it was, you know, another solid year and a half. And it. They had said they wanted to do a 25 song album, and I remember just being like, that is. That's nuts. And they pulled it off. And not only did they pull it off, but it's 25 great songs that, like, they fit together. They're a whole. They're. I don't want to say a whole vibe, because that, you know, but they are a whole vibe. Like, they're enjoyable to listen to. Their. Their lyrics are catchy and funny and clever. The musicianship is super tight. They. All three of them are the lead singer, so they bounce, you know, almost like Beastie boys style, I guess, not to put too fine a point on it, but, you know, they. They throw back and forth with the lyrics, and they. They're just entertaining, and they're super great dudes. So it's girth control, and the name of the album is life's too short for growth control. And again, a 25 song magnum opus, as it were. And it's hard to, like, you know, decide which song that I would like to play off of it. But I think what I want to do is play that to fucking girth control song, because the song was played on the episode that Girth Control were on, which is back January of 23 on episode number 56, you can catch girth control. But they talk about this song, and they were basically trying to come up with ideas, and they were like, well, should we write a song about beer, or should we write a song about how work sucks? And that ended up being the first two lines of the song. And they played it on the episode in January of 2023, and they released the album March of 2024. And it's out now, though, and it's fucking amazing. And I definitely want you to all check it out, but right now, it's. Now that's a fucking girth control song. And then I'll be right back to wrap it up on my unsigned 508 two year anniversary special.
• 1:28:44
Speaker A: Try to ride a political die but I just don't know if I can't pretend I know everything I just want to have some fun like a two party system don't like such a sham try to ride a link somebody's just not who I am should we write a song about fear? Should we write a song about how we're sunk? Think about the odds of song where we say the word fuck say the word fuck say the word fuck, two, three, four. Try to write a breakup song stand with my girlfriend for years we get so high and we laugh so hard we only cry at the tears I'm not saying things are perfect but we do what we can I tried to write a breakup song but it's just not who I am should we write a song about beer? Should we write a song about our word sucks? Should we write the other something here? Should we write a song where we say the word fuck? Say the word fuck? Now that's a fucking girth control song. I'm not a therapist, I'm not a scientist I just play guitar and eat cheeses if there's a message in these lyrics, just stay stoked and do cool shit rock. Maybe playing greedy and cover set that will tell you to pick it up, pick it up, pick it up, pick it up, pick it up, pick it up, pick it up, pick it up ls a fucking birth control song ls a fucking curse control song oh, shit, we forgot.
• 1:30:40
Speaker C: Now that's a fucking girth control song. That is girth control off their 25 song album, life's too short for girth Control. That's available on all the streaming services and bandcamps. It's also available, I believe, on vinyl. They may have sold out, but maybe not. But go check girth controls band camp, and I believe you can order the vinyl through there. So anyway, I want to thank everybody for not only listening to this episode, I know it went a little long, but for listening to any episodes or any amount of time or any interaction that you have with me on social media, it's been such a cool experience to just do what I love doing, which is exactly this. Sitting in a chair, talking on a microphone, playing music from bands that I love and respect and that I get the fortune to know personally and, you know, people that have listened to the show that I had never met. I've been approached, well, twice, but, you know, I've been approached at a show where someone I didn't know was like, oh, hey, you know, unsigned 508. I've listened to your show, and I really like it. And, like, shit like that is. Is mind blowing to me because I would be doing this anyway, but, like, to get a little bit of recognition for what I'm doing is super, super cool. So I'm gonna keep doing what I'm doing. I have a lot of episodes already lined up. I'm booked. I'm booked out up, you know, a couple months right now. So, no, no shortage of episodes for the near future, I'm going to keep going.
