- 0:00In our massive country, there are card collectors throughout
- 0:03the land participating in the hobby.
- 0:06There's Mike of Junk Wax Hero and Greg of Midlife Cards, and
- 0:11while distance may separate them, here is where they come
- 0:14together to talk cards. Hey buddy, talking cards.
- 0:21We got the Yankees to steamrolling the Red Sox and the
- 0:24Celtics got crushed by the Philadelphia 76ers, but other
- 0:30than that, everything is good in your world, I hope, yes.
- 0:34Yes. How?
- 0:35How are your Kings doing in the playoffs?
- 0:40I thought they cancelled that team.
- 0:42Are they still around? I went to the Sacramento A's
- 0:47game a week ago with my buddy Carl from Oz.
- 0:51I don't really care about the A's, but it was nice to go to a
- 0:55baseball game and and eat some food and have a beer at the
- 0:59game. That was good.
- 1:00Yeah, sounds like an awesome time.
- 1:03Yes, we've got, again, we're two weeks in a row now.
- 1:08We've got a new streak going. It's like, you know, it's like a
- 1:12hit streak with one of us not missing.
- 1:15So that's good. I wouldn't call, I wouldn't call
- 1:19these hits, Greg. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:26Appearance. Appearance.
- 1:28It's appearance streak. Yeah, Baseball season.
- 1:33It's it's a long grind. Let me let me ask you this.
- 1:37This just popped into my head. What do you think of the
- 1:42challenge thing happening with I got Darren return to collecting
- 1:48calling me right now. Sorry, Dee.
- 1:53Yeah. The challenge and basically EBS
- 1:56challenge. Do you like that?
- 1:58Do you not like that? Love it.
- 2:00I love it because it's super fast and it's, it's selective,
- 2:05you know, I think it's, it's very good.
- 2:08They're not spending minutes every time.
- 2:10It's like 8 seconds out of the game to to do a challenge and I
- 2:16I like it a lot. I like it too.
- 2:19I like it too. I think it's good because there
- 2:23are times that one call or one strike or one ball could like
- 2:27literally change a game and why not make it right if you have
- 2:32the opportunity. But the question that becomes
- 2:35why not use it for all balls and strikes if it's that easy and if
- 2:38it's that fast and they can just get a beep one way or the other?
- 2:42Why? It's because the UMPS are in a
- 2:46union and the union fights it. Is that, is that true?
- 2:51Why do they not want to be? See, they wouldn't need to be
- 2:55shown up anymore. See, right now the way that
- 2:56works is they get a bad call and then everybody gets pointed out.
- 3:02He just screwed up. If it was automatic, then it
- 3:07wouldn't be their fault. It seems like they would be all
- 3:09for that. They could just beep in their
- 3:11ear and they would know what to call.
- 3:13If if my all of my papers were automatically graded from my
- 3:18students, I would love that because then I could never make
- 3:22a mistake on the grading. Why would I want to have to
- 3:26grade everything? Well, you can set that up in
- 3:28Claude code. I don't know even know what that
- 3:31means, but. Get with the times.
- 3:34OK. Yeah.
- 3:36I, I, I don't do a lot of multiple choice, I'm sure.
- 3:41I don't know, I don't whatever. OK, moving on.
- 3:44You had a topic that you wanted to bring up about the continued
- 3:50movement of I appeal, but a specific portion or segment
- 3:55within it, right? It's very, very selfish of me
- 3:58and perhaps a little petty too, and I'm OK with that.
- 4:01So I saw I appealinc.com is a fascinating website and I'm, I'm
- 4:08on the council of I appealinc.com and you can, you
- 4:12can put cards in that you think have good I appeal and then
- 4:16people can go in and rate them and, and review them.
- 4:19And so you have a rating scale of F to a plus and then on top
- 4:26of a plus is God tier. And obviously you want a God
- 4:31tier card, right? And so really I've been enjoying
- 4:35this website. I think it was since last summer
- 4:39and people should go sign up. It's free.
- 4:41I don't know what his plan is to ever start charging at anything.
- 4:45He hasn't mentioned it, but it's completely free.
- 4:48And so I I took my very best car, my best looking I appeal
- 4:54and it has to be pre 2000. I think is the cut off.
- 4:59And so I took a Bobby Jones card from 1928.
- 5:03I think it's it's spectacular. It's virtually perfect and I put
- 5:10it in the first three reviews come in God tier, God tier, God
- 5:13tier. And I'm like, yes, this is by
- 5:15the way. Now they have stickers.
- 5:18Speaking of, I appeal stickers. He has stickers where if it gets
- 5:21a certain number, if it locks in at God God tier or a plus, you
- 5:27get a sticker to put on your slab.
- 5:31I mean, everyone likes stickers, I know.
- 5:35It's a free sticker. You don't need to pay, you know,
- 5:38a portion of percentage of your your thing.
- 5:41It's not driving up values in any way, at least not yet.
- 5:44And so God tear, God tear, God tear.
- 5:46It's clearly God tear. And then I get a review from a
- 5:51new council member and there aren't a lot of council members
- 5:54new can. I don't think he's new anyway.
- 5:57And this council member docked it, gave it AB plus because he
- 6:02didn't like the image. And if I'm talking about I
- 6:08appeal, I'm not talking about the image.
- 6:12And so I, it feels a little weird to me that somebody would
- 6:18say that. He even said this card looks
- 6:21perfect, but he didn't like the image.
- 6:27There wasn't anything about the, it wasn't anything about the
- 6:30registration. It was just the image itself.
- 6:35OK. And your question is, should the
- 6:38image itself be part of an I appeal grade?
- 6:41Is that right? Correct.
- 6:42Yes. Now, can we agree that there are
- 6:46some cards that we don't like the looks of and because we
- 6:50don't like the looks of it, we may not want that particular
- 6:55card, right? Absolutely.
- 6:57But that has nothing to do with I appeal in my opinion.
- 7:00Yeah, so I'm just pulled up the 58 tops Brooks Robinson on the
- 7:04screen. Terrible image, but I would.
- 7:06Not. I would not.
- 7:08If you posted that in iappealinc.com I would not give
- 7:11it AD because the image sucks. I guess the question is what is
- 7:18what is the point of I Appeal Inc?
- 7:21Is it to grade the qualities of the card or is it to grade the
- 7:31the look of the card? Because those are different,
- 7:34right? It's to grade the IT even talks
- 7:38about centering, registration, color, corners, edges.
- 7:45The same thing we're always talking about with carts.
- 7:49No one ever says the image on this card is terrible.
- 7:54So I'm down grading it in terms of I appeal.
- 7:57So I texted Jeremy Lee because Jeremy Lee is brilliant and I
- 8:00really respect his opinion. And I said what do you think
- 8:04about it? He goes that is 100% God tier
- 8:07card. And then he flipped it over and
- 8:09he said, well, the back is a little off center so I'll need
- 8:13to give it some thought. If I think it's an A+ or a God
- 8:16tier I respect that, but saying I don't like the image I'm going
- 8:24to give it AB plus seems crazy right?
- 8:28That yeah, I mean, I mean, just because I don't like an image
- 8:32doesn't mean that it's not a good image or it doesn't mean
- 8:36that it's not the image that was chosen by the producer of the
- 8:42card. So it seems like the I appeal
- 8:44would be for that card. How does this one look right not
- 8:50do you like this card? It should be.
- 8:53How does it look for that card? But I do have a question for
- 8:57you. If you did have a bunch of cards
- 9:01that you didn't like the looks of and you were ready to move on
- 9:04from them, where would you turn to sell those cards?
- 9:11Even if I did like the looks of them, I would, you know, I was
- 9:14ready to sell. I would sell to Chris Sewell,
- 9:17Collector, Investor, Dealer, in that order.
- 9:19Our friend, our trusted sponsor of this show, Chris Sewell is in
- 9:24our opinion the best dealer out there trusted to trust with your
- 9:29collection. He'll give you a fair offer.
- 9:31He will explain to you why your offer is fair and and you can
- 9:35sell to him or you can't. You can choose not to and he
- 9:37will. There be no hard feelings
- 9:39whatsoever. Collector Investor dealer.com.
- 9:42You can e-mail him at sewellsportscards@gmail.com if
- 9:47you're interested in selling. Not just the best dealer in New
- 9:51England, but the best dealer if you're looking to sell your
- 9:55collection. I think we can all agree.
- 9:57Yeah, we've already established that Paul Borges is the best
- 10:00dealer in New England. You know, in all seriousness,
- 10:03Chris is great. I look forward to seeing him,
- 10:06seeing him at the National. That's usually the only time I
- 10:09get to see the guy 'cause we live about as far away from each
- 10:13other as we could, except for you being a bit further than
- 10:17him. Highly respect him.
- 10:20Highly suggest him if you're looking to sell and yeah can.
- 10:25I can I real quick just show the card that I'm talking about
- 10:28'cause I think it would be, it would be good for people to see
- 10:31precisely what I'm talking about here.
- 10:34So can you see the card there? Yep, it's on the screen.
- 10:39So this this person's complaint is that the top of the card
- 10:44image, which is the sky blends into the border too much.
- 10:52And that's not a problem with the card.
- 10:54It's just the image because it's a kind of a sepia toned.
- 10:57When I said 1928, it's 1926. So do you see?
- 11:02I mean, I totally see what his point is, but that's not part of
- 11:08the eye appeal. Now, caught up on my rug, I'm
- 11:14having all sorts of problems. OK, I have two of that card.
- 11:19So not only do I love the image, but your example is a stunning
- 11:26example, and especially for the great.
- 11:29And didn't you get that at the National last year?
- 11:31Is that right? This is such a weird question.
- 11:33I have no recollection of buying it.
- 11:36I know I did because I I coveted it.
- 11:39Maybe it was at the. National, I'm almost positive
- 11:42because you bought it and you came up to me and you said, look
- 11:47at this card. And I said, I have that card.
- 11:49I, I bought, I bought that card about 3 years ago on Golden
- 11:53Marketplace and, and I've always liked it and I've been like, why
- 11:57don't more people like this? And you go, I got this.
- 11:59It's on one of my, it's on my 100 cards of envy list.
- 12:03And I said, so why is it a two? It looks like a 10 and I start
- 12:08looking at it and you go I don't want to know why I'm not going
- 12:12to look and investigate why it's only a 2.
- 12:16And I said OK. Yeah, then you have a better
- 12:19memory than I I put in my card ladder that I purchased on
- 12:24September 2nd, 2024, but I often put in fake dates in there
- 12:30because if I don't remember. So that's probably what
- 12:32happened. Yeah, if if I get a card and
- 12:35it's APSA 2 and it looks perfect to me, I don't want to know why
- 12:38it's. That's fair.
- 12:41Because then I end up focusing on that flaw.
- 12:45I don't. Even when I find what's wrong
- 12:48with a card, I don't. It doesn't bug me.
- 12:51I mean, it's like, you know, my wife, she I'm sure she sees lots
- 12:56of flaws in me every time she looks at me.
- 12:58But she continue. Oh, yeah.
- 13:00Believe it or not, Believe it or not, there are lots of flaws
- 13:04going on. All right, Well, you know, yeah,
- 13:08I I agree with you that I think that that card is stunning for
- 13:13the example. And I think I feel it's not my
- 13:15website. I wasn't asked to be on the
- 13:18council. You are on the council.
- 13:22And it seems to me like what the point would be is to see what is
- 13:28the look of that example of that card and is it an extremely good
- 13:36looking example of that card, Not do I like the qualities
- 13:40about that card, but how does that one look for the card.
- 13:45But again, that would be something that at a council
- 13:49meeting we could talk about, but I, I won't be there.
- 13:52I'm sure that reviewer is a very nice guy, but we have beef now.
- 13:56Oh, did you have a YouTube channel that we can start
- 14:00leaving nasty messages? Thumbs down, thumbs Downing him.
- 14:04We can go thumbs. Down, man, I have no idea.
- 14:08I actually don't know anything about him and that's OK.
- 14:10Hey, I've got a question for you.
- 14:12Yeah, unrelated. Can we take a?
- 14:14Can we take a little side Rd. here?
- 14:16Anything you want bud. When was the last time you ate a
- 14:19circus peanut? Well, that's a great question
- 14:25and you'd think that I would give a brief response, but
- 14:29that's not how I work. You know, when you go into like
- 14:34old kind of grocery store supermarkets, not like the main
- 14:39chains, but like the off chains. I know out where you live
- 14:43there's like Kroger and stuff, right?
- 14:45Never been to Kroger, that's more Midwest.
- 14:47Hannaford, Hannaford and Shaw's. Never heard of it, but OK.
- 14:51If you go to like the tier 21 and you go to the candy aisle,
- 14:55there will be like the name brand candy and then they've got
- 14:58like the off brand candy. But it's not like the house
- 15:01brand off brand candy. It's like the Super generic off
- 15:05brand candy, you know? And I remember looking at circus
- 15:10peanuts there and every time I'd see those, I would just go, why?
- 15:17Why is that a thing? I can say with 100% certainty,
- 15:23I've never eaten a circus peanut, not a single circus
- 15:29peanut in my entire life with 100% certainty.
- 15:33I've not even had a bite of one. I've seen them, never eaten one.
- 15:38So now I have to bring you fluff, Fluffer, Nutter and a
- 15:42circus. Careful, careful.
- 15:44We don't want to isolate that. I'm going to bring you fluff.
- 15:48That just sounds. That just sounds brutal, buddy.
- 15:52So when I was a kid, one of my favorite candies, like top three
- 15:56candy was circus peanuts. Really.
- 16:00I hate that. Oh man, I love circus peanuts.
- 16:03But then at some point after my teen, you know, I grew up and
- 16:07you don't see circus peanuts anymore.
- 16:08They're just maybe because nobody likes them, because
- 16:11people are biased like you and refuse to even try them.
- 16:15But I saw them in the grocery store today.
- 16:17And so I bought a bag, nostalgia.
- 16:19And it hit, oh, man, Greg, it is delicious.
- 16:21And it tasted like the 1990s. It was so nostalgic, so
- 16:27delicious. I couldn't stop eating them.
- 16:33I don't, I don't know what to say.
- 16:35I, I feel like, I feel like if I ate a circus peanut, what I
- 16:40envision is like my throat just burning afterwards.
- 16:44Like if I drank gasoline, that's just what I feel like.
- 16:48Like the sugar would be like the harshest sugar out there.
- 16:53My heart was shot up so high after eating.
- 16:55I would think that like, you know, the next day when you use
- 16:59the bathroom, like things would be weird colors and stuff.
- 17:02Like, I just don't envision your system being designed to receive
- 17:08a circus peanut. That's that's fair.
- 17:11I will tell you. I will tell you though, the most
- 17:15disgusting thing I used to eat as a kid that I'm embarrassed to
- 17:20admit. Do you want to hear it?
- 17:24Of course. So I used to get, and I talked
- 17:28about this in the book, every Friday my dad would pick us up
- 17:31from school because Friday was my dad's day.
- 17:34And on the way home we would swing through 711 and I would
- 17:38get $1.00. He'd hand me my dollar.
- 17:41I'd go in, I'd spend my dollar and there was this stretch where
- 17:46on the counter where they had like the beef jerky and the beef
- 17:49sticks and things. There were these like beef
- 17:53sausage things that were about the size of a hot dog.
- 17:58And they were in like a water. They were like the, the case was
- 18:03like almost like a water balloon of watery, like a reddish
- 18:08goodness, not goodness. And it was, it was they were
- 18:12like spicy. They were like, it was like a,
- 18:16almost like a hot Tamale kind of spicy to them.
- 18:19And I remember getting them there were, it was always like
- 18:22they were like $0.25. So I'd have like $0.25 later and
- 18:25I'd get one and I'd pop that thing out and I'd eat it.
- 18:28And I remember eating them. And now occasionally I'll be
- 18:33somewhere and I'll see one of those things and I'll literally
- 18:37like start like gagging at how disgusting they look.
- 18:42And I, I used to eat them. I had at least ten of those in
- 18:46my day. Wow, I had never eaten a Slim
- 18:52Jim until about 3:00. Or five slim Jims are the best.
- 18:55No, it's trash. I so I'm at an age now where I'm
- 18:59willing to try anything but when I was a kid I would see
- 19:01something that looked disgusting and I would I would be like
- 19:03there's no way I'm eating that. And a Co worker found out I had
- 19:06never had a slim Jim just by asking me and so he brought one
- 19:11in for me and I took a bite and it was atrocious.
- 19:15Oh, that's just. That's just, I'm disappointed.
- 19:20I I love Slim Jims. Awful.
- 19:24Lucy and I both love Slim Jims. The other two members of our
- 19:27family are repulsed by them. So I I don't, I mean and.
- 19:33I hope people, I hope people enjoy Snack Corner with Mike and
- 19:36Greg here. I we, I could talk a lot about
- 19:39snacks. We've already.
- 19:41Got snack sponsor? Yeah, if you're out there and
- 19:44you own a snack company, hit us up.
- 19:48We could also provide for you a nice landing spot on our
- 19:52sponsors page of sports card clubhouse.com.
- 19:56Especially if you're a Chipotle. It's not a snack, but we would.
- 20:01We would also accept some restaurant chains.
- 20:04Yes, especially Chipotle. OK, so my other topic or the
- 20:11other topic that we had, I mean literally mentioned for about 3
- 20:18seconds and I haven't even shown it to you yet.
- 20:20I got this question from when when I got home from
- 20:24Strongsville, there was a lot of kind of like videos I was
- 20:29watching on the plane and afterwards and all the fallout
- 20:32of everything happening. And you start realizing there
- 20:35was all these things happening that you didn't know about.
- 20:38And one of the things that was a huge take away that was
- 20:42happening, that was a lot of the hubbub in the room was my buddy
- 20:46Dave. He brought his collection to the
- 20:50Strongsville show with his son and he submitted several of his
- 20:57high end cards to Mike Baker for stick stickering.
- 21:02And that's a whole nother topic. We're not going to go down that
- 21:05road right now, but his cards were there and I've shown his
- 21:09cards on a couple of videos in my channel and Dave's been on my
- 21:13channel a couple of times. Great guy, absolutely amazing
- 21:18collection and I didn't realize how many people got to see his
- 21:24collection as as I realized afterwards when I was watching
- 21:29videos, I was like there's Leighton Sheldon looking at his
- 21:31collection, there's Jake waxback wisdom, look at his collection.
- 21:34There's, you know, Tony Southern collector, look at his
- 21:36collection like his collection was getting shown a lot as it
- 21:39deserves to be seen. Well, you didn't get to see it.
- 21:44No, I I was looking around for him at trade night and I
- 21:47couldn't find him. He was at trade night.
- 21:51And you, it was interesting because you had said a couple of
- 21:54times that at trade night you spent a lot of time in the side
- 21:58room talking to some people. And Dave was in there with his
- 22:01son Jake a lot that night. And I figured that's all along.
- 22:05I figured that's who it was that you were talking to in there.
- 22:10But anyway. But I, I don't think I talked to
- 22:12Dave. I I'm pretty, I'm like 98% sure
- 22:16I know what Dave looks like because I've seen him on your
- 22:19channel. Yeah.
- 22:21Anyway, he left a question for AQ and a episode and he posted
- 22:30this, I think it was yesterday. He posted this question in the
- 22:34comments of my Q&A that posted on Wednesday and I thought it
- 22:39was a really good question and instead of talking about it in
- 22:42my Q and AII wanted to pick your brain on this topic a little bit
- 22:45and see what you thought about it too.
- 22:47So I'm going to read it for those of you listening, not
- 22:49watching. It says great episode as usual.
- 22:53I have a question for next week. Previously you had discussed why
- 22:58people collect the type of cards they do.
- 23:00My question is, why do you collect cards in general?
- 23:04What emotion do you feel when you're collecting looking at
- 23:07your cards? The reason I'm asking this is
- 23:10because a friend recently asked me this question.
- 23:13He said he had no desire to collect cards and just didn't
- 23:18understand why anyone would. So I want to talk about that
- 23:24because when you think about it, it is kind of like we're
- 23:31spending what kind of money on what, but we do it happily, we
- 23:36do it gleefully, we get excited about it.
- 23:40So to the first point of the question is why do you collect
- 23:46cards in general and what emotions do you feel when you're
- 23:49collecting and looking at your cards?
- 23:53This is a really difficult question to answer and I'm going
- 23:56to say I think a lot of people in the community would answer
- 23:59it's because of the community, but that's not true because you
- 24:02were collecting before you joined the community.
- 24:05I'm I mean for virtually everybody, nobody joins the
- 24:08community and then says, oh, hey, I think I'm going to
- 24:10collect too. I think there there are a lot of
- 24:17reasons why, which isn't a very satisfactory answer, but I
- 24:21collect out of nostalgia. I collect out of I don't, I
- 24:30don't know how to answer this. It's such a weird, not a weird
- 24:32question, but a weird thing for me to think about on the fly and
- 24:38I'm not good at like this is a a deep thought by Mike situation
- 24:44where my brain fries up and I I slept great last night and I'm
- 24:48ready for this type of thing. But this I don't know.
- 24:50So when I was a kid, I collected because I loved sports.
- 24:56I loved baseball and basketball and it was just a thing that I
- 25:01did even even without my dad. So I would say he got me into
- 25:05it. But then when he and my mom
- 25:07divorced, I continued collecting more, probably more at my mom's
- 25:11house than at my dad's. And I think there's just kind
- 25:15of, I like the Chase. And I don't mean ripping wax
- 25:19because I hate ripping. Well, I love ripping wax, but I
- 25:22hate the feeling after. It's the the Chase for a, a
- 25:26great card or a great collection or, you know, finding something
- 25:31new, discovering something new that you love and nostalgia for
- 25:35your childhood and the sports that you loved, the players that
- 25:38you loved, the teams that you loved and the players that you
- 25:42Revere still to this day. That's for me.
- 25:48That's why I collect. Let let me throw a few things
- 25:57for me. Do you remember the feeling when
- 26:01you were a kid and the bell rang from the last day of school and
- 26:07there's just this Glee where you're like, I don't have to do
- 26:14anything for two months And it just all the weights of the
- 26:19world are lifted off you and you just feel amazing.
- 26:24And you want to bottle that feeling.
- 26:27And, and in some ways, to be honest with you, when I, when I
- 26:34get on the plane or even get off the plane, when I'm headed to
- 26:39one of these card show hangout weekends and things, it's very
- 26:44much this. I don't have to worry about
- 26:46anything. I don't have to worry about
- 26:49taking care of the dishes or my family or meals.
- 26:53I'm just going to live for a minute.
- 26:56And that feeling is how I feel when I'm at a card show.
- 27:01There's like this excitement when you're headed to a card
- 27:04show or when you look and you see that there's these new
- 27:07alerts in your saved searches to look and see what the cards are.
- 27:12And it's this, this, it's the closest thing to that feeling of
- 27:16the first day of summer that I get to feel as an adult where
- 27:21it's I'm not worried about all of the things in the world that
- 27:26weigh us down. I'm not worried about my car.
- 27:28Why is it making that noise? Why the the backyard, how
- 27:32there's something growing over there.
- 27:34I got to cut down. Like it just lets me be for a
- 27:38moment. And it's a release.
- 27:42It's like a relief from the anxieties of the world.
- 27:46That's part of it for me. And, and when you say nostalgia,
- 27:50'cause that was the first thing you said.
- 27:53The nostalgia for me is I'm connecting to that feeling
- 27:57because when I walk into a card show now, it feels exactly like
- 28:02when I walked into a card show when I was 9.
- 28:04It feels exactly the same. I've got a.
- 28:08Lot more money. Well, ideally, not necessarily
- 28:13at times. The other thing is I think that
- 28:17is, guys, there are certain things wired into our DNA.
- 28:22And one of the things that I think is wired into our DNA is
- 28:26to hunt. It's to search.
- 28:30It's to identify things at like, I'm not a fisherman at all.
- 28:37Like I don't even know if I've actually ever caught a fish.
- 28:42But when we moved out to the community we live in about 15
- 28:46years ago, they have a bunch of fishing lakes.
- 28:49So I'm like, I'm going to get a fishing bowl, I'm going to go
- 28:51fish. And I would go and I remember
- 28:54casting and I was like, a lot of me was like, I don't even want
- 28:57to catch the fish because I don't want to deal with it, but
- 29:00I want to go fishing, right. And when I would see the fish
- 29:05identify my bait and start to kind of move and I would kind of
- 29:08wiggle the, the, the pole or whatever that, what do you call
- 29:12it? Fish?
- 29:13What the fishing pole, the rod, what, whatever it is.
- 29:16And he'd wiggle it and the, the fish would go, Oh, like he was
- 29:18kind of like, Oh, that's interesting.
- 29:20And I remember I was getting these adrenaline rushes and I'm
- 29:23like, why, what is happening? Like I don't even care.
- 29:26I don't even want to really catch the fish.
- 29:28I don't want to deal with that. I just but there's something in
- 29:31US that is like we want to find things.
- 29:37We want to pan for gold, we want to hunt for, you know, whatever
- 29:43it is that we're hunting for a meal that night.
- 29:46Like that's that's wired in our DNA.
- 29:49And one of the only places we get to satisfy that is when
- 29:53there's an item that we want that we're stalking and we're
- 29:57preparing for and we're gathering funds for, and we're
- 30:00making moves to be able to get it.
- 30:02And then we slay that item and we add it to our collection.
- 30:06Like we just, you know, slit a deer's throat and throw it over
- 30:10our shoulder, and we're going back to camp with the deer.
- 30:13It's like, it feels like it's natural to have that feeling of
- 30:19hunting and then conquering. And I feel like cards do that
- 30:23for me. So that's very well said.
- 30:27This is why your videos are 40 minutes and mine are 8:00
- 30:30because you have smart thoughts that that take you a while to
- 30:34get through. But they're there's these great
- 30:37stories and I'm just like, I like cards.
- 30:39Video over. I, I just, I'm passionate about
- 30:43this stuff. And when I, you know, I was
- 30:46looking at some cards the other day and I'm just like, I was
- 30:49sending some pictures to a friend this morning about a
- 30:52couple of cards are just like, man, tell me this card isn't
- 30:55amazing. Like it's so cool looking and
- 30:59it, it really does. You know, just like we're wired
- 31:02to hunt. I think we're wired to have
- 31:07resources and we're wired to try to expand our resources and
- 31:14those resources of money. It's like, I think we like
- 31:16investing because we see investing as an opportunity to
- 31:21gain additional resources to provide.
- 31:24And I think that's in our DNA. And so when you're buying a card
- 31:27that you think is a good deal or you think that it has potential
- 31:31upward potential, it just, it's just checking so many boxes of
- 31:37how we're wired. And for some people it's not,
- 31:41it's, you know, some people love to literally physically go hunt.
- 31:44That's not my thing. I, I've no problem with it, but
- 31:48that's how some people satisfy that.
- 31:51I satisfy it with cards and that's how it makes me feel.
- 31:56It makes me feel satisfied, accomplished.
- 31:59It makes me, and then I'm also a visual person.
- 32:02I've always loved photography. I've always loved taking
- 32:06pictures. I've always liked editing
- 32:07pictures. I've always liked, you know,
- 32:10looking at beautiful images and artifacts and and learning about
- 32:15the past and it just it just checks so many boxes of what I
- 32:19like. But that said, I also totally
- 32:23understand why someone else would look at it and go you do
- 32:26what? Like that's cool.
- 32:29Like I understand how somebody else their thing is racquetball,
- 32:32you know, or or you know, golf or running.
- 32:36Well, I don't understand running.
- 32:38I don't understand running. That's just that's just why or
- 32:41that just sounds brutally not fun to me.
- 32:45But I miss running. Really.
- 32:48Yeah. I like running, I like
- 32:52competing. Have you ever run?
- 32:54I like competing have. You ever have you ever truly
- 32:57run? Like I didn't enjoy running
- 32:59until I learned how to run. I.
- 33:00Don't even know what that means. What does truly running mean?
- 33:04Like, so I used to just go out and run and I, I was just like,
- 33:08I want to run. But then I learned about heart
- 33:12rate training. People are shutting us off right
- 33:14now, heart rate training and you're supposed to keep your
- 33:17heart rate at a certain level. And so, you know, I was 40 ish
- 33:22years old at the time and you're my Max heart rate was 180.
- 33:26And so you're supposed to keep heart rate around 1:35-ish when
- 33:29you're running. And so that made me slow down
- 33:31because my heart rate was getting up into one, one 70s
- 33:34early in my runs before 'cause I was running too fast, I didn't
- 33:37know how to run. And then when I started keeping
- 33:40my heart rate lower, I was able to run longer and it made me an
- 33:44infinitely better runner and it made me enjoy running much more
- 33:47and it made the injuries go away.
- 33:50And then I had a nerve injury which ended my running all
- 33:52together. But the point is, I didn't
- 33:55really enjoy it either until I learned how to truly run and run
- 33:58the right way. All of that is like Greek to me.
- 34:04I'd I had no idea that was a thing, any of that.
- 34:09I love sports, but I didn't like some people love they love the
- 34:20science of hitting a baseball. I just liked winning.
- 34:26I just wanted to beat you. I didn't care if it was pick up
- 34:30basketball or some Home Run Derby game at the park.
- 34:36I love winning and winning drove my love for sport because it was
- 34:42never about the love for the sport.
- 34:44It was always about I want to become better than you so I
- 34:47could beat you. Yes, I was uncomfortably
- 34:52competitive as a kid. It was.
- 34:55I didn't realize it in the moment, but looking back on it,
- 35:01nobody wanted to play with me because I would.
- 35:04Not only was I going to win, but I was going to tell you I was
- 35:09going to tell you I was going to win, and then I was going to
- 35:11tell you if I won. I was such a terrible sport.
- 35:17I broke many video game systems and it was it was like a it was
- 35:24like I would black out. Like there were times where I
- 35:27would like, I'd be on my Genesis, you know, and like like
- 35:30I would the the ball would get picked off and I would throw the
- 35:33remote at the thing and the thing would, you know, knock the
- 35:36game out and and I was like, how'd that happen?
- 35:39Like like I didn't even I would like black.
- 35:43I was so mad. I would like black out.
- 35:48I'm a lunatic, Mike. I never, I never threw anything.
- 35:52There was never any violence. Oh.
- 35:55Lots of violence for me. My friend Matt, my childhood
- 35:58friend Matt Lafreniere, if you're out there, Matt, I hear
- 36:00you're doing very well. But when we were kids, you know,
- 36:03like 6th, 7th grade, he had a very difficult childhood.
- 36:09And he, I remember we'd be at his house for a sleepover and he
- 36:12would throw the controller. And I remember one day he broke
- 36:16the TV, he kicked a hole or punched a hole in the wall.
- 36:20And there was always a point where the rest of us kids would
- 36:22be like, OK, party's over. And we would just leave because
- 36:25we knew that Matt was had some anger issues.
- 36:31But that was the thing back then, right?
- 36:33There was no parents. There were no parents around.
- 36:36We just regulated ourselves and there were no parents to be
- 36:40like, oh, calm down. We just said up.
- 36:43Matt's lost it. We're all leaving.
- 36:45I would play video games over and over and over and over.
- 36:50So when I was playing with somebody else, I wouldn't lose
- 36:56that. I was a lunatic about winning.
- 36:59And, and it's it, it makes it where I can't really place.
- 37:03I mean, like I'll golf, like I would go golfing with you.
- 37:07I would not keep score. I would not keep score 'cause
- 37:10I'd be miserable. I would be miserable if I had to
- 37:13keep score. But if I go golfing by myself,
- 37:15I'll keep score. Interesting.
- 37:18I'm still a lunatic. So what's?
- 37:22Your handicap today. Well, I don't play enough to
- 37:26know. So what happens is I play a fair
- 37:30amount over the summer and my handicap goes down and then I
- 37:35don't play much and it goes way up.
- 37:37So it depends on when you ask me.
- 37:39So like right now I bet my handicap is 10 or 12, but like
- 37:46couple of summers ago I was playing like three days a week
- 37:50and it got down to like a three. Yeah, it just, I mean, I, I
- 37:54track it all, but. Yeah, I played.
- 37:59I played a lot in college and they had a system.
- 38:02There was a computer in the corner of the clubhouse and you
- 38:05enter in all your stuff and I think I peaked it 12.
- 38:11But that course, I played on that course and it was one of
- 38:13the harder courses in Maine. Never cracked 80.
- 38:17Not once in all my 4 summers playing there.
- 38:20But then I'll go to another course and I'd crack 80.
- 38:23And I say easily, but you know, I'd shoot a 7778.
- 38:27But this one, this court, Brunswick Golf Club in
- 38:29Brunswick, ME, I could never crack 80.
- 38:32And it was my home course. It was a course I played on
- 38:34three times a week. Couldn't do it.
- 38:37Hard course. So I'm looking at it, this is my
- 38:40handicap. I'll hold it up for you.
- 38:43It's AI, keep it on there. And it looks like a couple years
- 38:49ago it was about high threes, low fours.
- 38:55And then you'll see I won't play over the winter and then I'll
- 38:58play over the summer and it just does that every year.
- 39:01Yeah. All right, Yeah, all right.
- 39:05Well, I mean, we're 39 minutes in.
- 39:07We've solved all the world's problems.
- 39:09Again. Yeah, I mean, this is, I mean
- 39:12it's just like once a week they just, I mean, put me on a
- 39:15council and everything would get fixed.
- 39:17But I'm not on any councils. What does it feel like when you
- 39:20go into council meetings? Do you guys wear those little
- 39:22funny hats and stuff or like what is it like?
- 39:24There aren't any council meetings, but I have a feeling
- 39:26this video might make some changes.
- 39:30No council meetings. It if you were, if you and I
- 39:36were to start a stickering eye appeal company, how do you think
- 39:42that would go? Oh, I think it would be great.
- 39:46We would be revered as I appeal geniuses.
- 39:53We would definitely undercut Mike Baker pricing, right?
- 39:57Oh yeah, 5 bucks. You want a sticker?
- 39:595 bucks. $5 for the sticker? What about a percentage?
- 40:03Because right now he charges like 2% + 25 bucks.
- 40:06Would you just 5 bucks in any percentage or just $5 period?
- 40:10No, I think the uglier your card, the more we're going to
- 40:13charge you and we'll give you the sticker.
- 40:15But. You're wasting our time.
- 40:19Yeah, we'll. We'll put an ugly sticker on
- 40:22your card. I like that.
- 40:25I like that. All right, well, any final
- 40:30thoughts before we pull the RIP cord on episode?
- 40:34I think we said it was 33, which is I guess if we're Jake and and
- 40:39Matt, we would call this the Larry Bird episode, I believe,
- 40:41right? Have some circus peanuts.
- 40:46I I won't. I am certain that from the next
- 40:50time we talk I will not have a single circus peanut.
- 40:54But I also won't have one of those little hot link things in
- 40:57the juice either. That is in a giant bag of circus
- 41:01peanuts. Holy crap, I've never seen a bag
- 41:04that big of them pull that up again.
- 41:08Oh, like just brutal. What did they did?
- 41:10They taste like candy corn. So no, I I was thinking about
- 41:13this. What do they taste?
- 41:16Sorry about the noise take. Us through the process.
- 41:18I it says marshmallow circus peanuts and I don't know what
- 41:22they taste like. There's nothing to compare it to
- 41:24at all. No, come on, they gotta taste
- 41:27kinda like something. No, Google it.
- 41:29What do? What do circus peanuts taste
- 41:31like? Well, I'm gonna do that right
- 41:32now. Very.
- 41:33You're eating one. I mean, are you gonna eat one
- 41:36right now? Yeah.
- 41:39Let's see. A mix of nostalgic banana candy
- 41:42and corn syrup, and I hate banana flavor.
- 41:46It's banana candy and corn syrup, is what it said.
- 41:50I taste no banana. Do you remember those little
- 41:53candies called Runts? Yeah.
- 41:57And there was the banana one. There was one that was shaped
- 42:00like a banana, and there's one that's shaped like a cherry and
- 42:02one shaped like like a lemon or a lime or something.
- 42:07You didn't like the lemon or you didn't like the the banana ones?
- 42:10No trash. That was my favorite one.
- 42:13This is delicious, Greg. You're really missing out.
- 42:16I. Think I'm OK.
- 42:19I really think I'm OK, dude. I don't know.
- 42:23All right, it again. I, I, I wish your Red Sox
- 42:28nothing but a continuation of how they've played earlier in
- 42:33the week. Thank you.
- 42:34And the Celtics I am. I'm very neutral on the Celtics.
- 42:41I'm trying to think, oh wait, tonight we're recording this
- 42:44tonight. This is Thursday is the NFL
- 42:46draft. We didn't even talk about that.
- 42:50Is there somebody that you're hope?
- 42:52Is there a a position you're hoping your patriots go for I.
- 42:56Didn't even know there was a draft tonight.
- 42:58OK, I could not name a single player in the draft.
- 43:03Is Johnny Manziel being drafted? I think he's already been taken.
- 43:08Oh, is he OK? I don't think he's on the board
- 43:11anymore. No, I'm I don't think I could
- 43:15name a single college player. I just don't follow college.
- 43:25Yeah, well, I root for my Tennessee Volunteers.
- 43:32Right, that makes perfect sense. Yeah, the 49ers pick 27th.
- 43:39The the thing I will say is I really like the 49er front
- 43:43office and their talent evaluators.
- 43:47And so even though we're picking 27th, they'll probably pick
- 43:51somebody who was projected to go midway through the second round,
- 43:57but he'll turn out to be a stud. So I am.
- 44:00I have all faith in my team. New England Patriots picked
- 44:0531st, so it'll be about two hours after you fall asleep.
- 44:10Oh, I you know, I didn't know that there was a draft because
- 44:13the Patriots head coach won't be there.
- 44:18He won't be there because I guess today there were videos
- 44:22leaked of him kissing the reporter.
- 44:25Yes, in 2020. Greg, it's been going on for a
- 44:29while. So he's in counselling.
- 44:32He went to rehab, which there the people said, hey, back in
- 44:372009, Tiger Woods went into rehab three days ahead of the
- 44:41big, huge release. And so they knew because
- 44:44they're, you know, the these news outlets are reaching out to
- 44:47him and trying. To get him to buy.
- 44:49It give give us a statement. We're about to drop this story.
- 44:53And so they threw him into rehab.
- 44:56And so now there are people saying Mike Vrabel is in rehab
- 45:00because something even bigger is about to drop.
- 45:03Yeah, it sucks because he's got a family and he's got a wife
- 45:07and. She's got a family, too.
- 45:10Yeah. And, and the fact that it's been
- 45:12going on for five years. At least brutal, yeah.
- 45:19All right, well on that note, time to hear some whistling as
- 45:24we see our logo float away. See you, Greg.
