Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, I'm Paula, the lead guitarist and vocals for Cunt Squad.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Nick, guitarist for Cunt Squad.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Yes, that's who we are.
- 0:18Speaker 4: That's fantastic. Thanks for joining us. Always a pleasure to
- 0:21Speaker 4: see your smiling faces.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Nice to see yours, you know, Paul.
- 0:26Speaker 5: Top Squad are headed to the opposite side of Australia
- 0:29Speaker 5: in November to play at Dark Down South Open Air
- 0:32Speaker 5: Festival over November 20th and 21st. It's a bloody long
- 0:36Speaker 5: way to go to play some music, guys.
- 0:38Speaker 4: It sure is.
- 0:39Speaker 3: We've been there once before.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Yeah, we love it over there. They look after us.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:45Speaker 4: It's a beautiful part of the world, isn't it?
- 0:47Speaker 6: Yeah, and they've got a great scene going on too.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:51Speaker 3: It's really good. The people that are putting it on,
- 0:55Speaker 3: what are they called, Wolf?
- 0:57Speaker 4: Dark Wolf.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Yeah, Dark Wolf Productions. They're really nice people, Ursh and Kim. And, yeah,
- 1:05Speaker 1: when we got there the first time, when did we go?
- 1:07Speaker 1: It was last year, I think. And we got there
- 1:10Speaker 1: and we were trying to find our stuff and couldn't
- 1:12Speaker 1: find our stuff off the plane. And lo and behold,
- 1:16Speaker 1: they'd already collected it.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Oh, that's sad.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Collected our stuff and, like, hi, we're here.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Yeah. And it was like, yeah, picked us up and
- 1:26Speaker 1: had our stuff and, like, accommodation organised. They were just,
- 1:30Speaker 1: I think we worked out like rock stars because on tour.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Had we experienced that kind of, like, attention. So it
- 1:40Speaker 3: was really nice of them.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Yeah, cool.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Ta-da!
- 1:44Speaker 4: I think it's in its third year this year, and
- 1:46Speaker 4: it's one.
- 1:47Speaker 5: Of the only true open-air medal festivals doing the rounds
- 1:50Speaker 5: in this country. So you guys have been there and
- 1:52Speaker 5: played a few shows. How important are dedicated medal festivals
- 1:56Speaker 5: like this and the long-term sustainability of medal in this country?
- 2:01Speaker 6: I think they're a must-have. Like, they're good for everybody.
- 2:06Speaker 6: They're good for the punters getting to see heaps of
- 2:08Speaker 6: bands that they may have never seen before. And it's
- 2:11Speaker 6: great for the bands to get to an audience that
- 2:13Speaker 6: they probably wouldn't otherwise get to.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:17Speaker 3: And I think we were there for Shredfest in Brisbane
- 2:21Speaker 3: not long ago. And, like, just the turnout was phenomenal.
- 2:25Speaker 1: And, like, just we got to see bands that, you know,
- 2:30Speaker 1: we'd never seen and play with them. a whole heap
- 2:36Speaker 1: of bands, some that we had, you know, previously played
- 2:38Speaker 1: with in other states.
- 2:39Speaker 3: But that's the good thing about festivals, right?
- 2:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Apart from the punters.
- 2:44Speaker 1: And, you know, the crowd because those festivals tend to
- 2:49Speaker 1: attract larger crowds.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Apart from that.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Like, you just get to meet people from, you know,
- 2:56Speaker 1: all sorts of bands and that was a real experience. So, yeah,
- 2:59Speaker 1: Dark Down South would be similar.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I mean, I know when we were in Perth, last,
- 3:04Speaker 3: they just finished, did.
- 3:05Speaker 1: They just finish it, or was one coming up actually,
- 3:07Speaker 1: there was one coming up, last year's one, and there
- 3:11Speaker 1: and then they're like, oh, you know, you should come
- 3:13Speaker 1: up for the next one, and we're like, oh yeah, cool,
- 3:17Speaker 1: let's do that, you know, so it's been, it'll be
- 3:21Speaker 1: about a year since we've been there, so yeah, really
- 3:24Speaker 1: looking forward to it, it's a fair way down from
- 3:27Speaker 1: down south actually, I think it's about three hours from
- 3:32Speaker 1: the main city, if I'm not mistaken.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Of course, yeah. Yeah, so it'll be a bit of
- 3:36Speaker 3: a drive. And, you know, obviously it's camping and what
- 3:39Speaker 3: have you, a bit like Larkin.
- 3:42Speaker 6: Hey, yes.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Off-est and what have you. So, yeah, so it'll be
- 3:47Speaker 1: an experience. I don't know if we're going to be staying, though,
- 3:49Speaker 1: that long because we've got to get back on the.
- 3:53Speaker 4: On the red-eye.
- 3:54Speaker 3: But, yeah, it's going to be an awesome atmosphere.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Apparently.
- 3:59Speaker 3: They've sold out round two tickets.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Oh, that's great. That's good. Good on them.
- 4:03Speaker 3: So round three is. Not for sale.
- 4:07Speaker 1: No. Nice.
- 4:08Speaker 5: I think one thing I really love about like this,
- 4:10Speaker 5: there's quite a few bands playing, but there's only one international.
- 4:13Speaker 5: Like they've got Demonte from Mexico City, but everyone else
- 4:17Speaker 5: is Australian.
- 4:18Speaker 4: It's like it's good.
- 4:20Speaker 5: Like these days people, you know, they understandably put a
- 4:22Speaker 5: few internationals on to try and guarantee the money coming
- 4:25Speaker 5: back in. But to take a risk and just promote
- 4:28Speaker 5: home grand talent, it says a lot for the state
- 4:30Speaker 5: of the music industry in this country at the moment.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I think we've got a pretty healthy scene,
- 4:36Speaker 1: like in terms of metal bands.
- 4:38Speaker 3: I don't know whether there's.
- 4:39Speaker 1: A resurgence of metal, but there seems to be a.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Lot of it in Melbourne at the moment and.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Even probably in Brisbane and Sydney.
- 4:50Speaker 6: Yeah, there's a lot of metal and it's all varied too,
- 4:54Speaker 6: which is great to see as well. And it's not
- 4:56Speaker 6: just a whole bunch of people copying, you know, whatever,
- 4:59Speaker 6: you know, some bands doing, but, Yeah, there's so much
- 5:03Speaker 6: metal out there.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Yeah, different genres.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:08Speaker 3: And that's good to have a mix, like, you know.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Yeah, because, like, it would get a bit,
- 5:13Speaker 1: I mean, I know there's some festivals that are exclusively, say,
- 5:17Speaker 1: thrash or what have you.
- 5:19Speaker 4: They do get a bit same-same after a while.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Like, I love all that kind of music, but you're
- 5:24Speaker 5: seeing 20 bands that have carbon copies of one another.
- 5:27Speaker 4: It sort of becomes a bit past day pretty quick.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Unless it's Mexican growing cool.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Well, everyone's got their voices, haven't they?
- 5:36Speaker 5: Yeah, looking forward to seeing that band, actually.
- 5:40Speaker 4: So that'll be really.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Cool for them to come all that way, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 3: for the festival.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I don't know if they're doing other shows to make
- 5:50Speaker 1: it worth their while, but it'll be interesting, nevertheless. So, yeah,
- 5:56Speaker 1: it's a good thing. The mixed sub-genre... of metal is,
- 6:01Speaker 1: I think, really important for metal, generally, because there'd be
- 6:06Speaker 1: puns there that might not even know.
- 6:09Speaker 3: They like whatever.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Exactly what that song, yeah. They've not even.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Been exposed to it.
- 6:14Speaker 1: So, you know, and there's good and bad in every sub-genre,
- 6:18Speaker 1: you know, like, but the important thing is the difference.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Like you said, it doesn't get boring because, yeah, there's
- 6:26Speaker 1: a good variety, good mix. Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:29Speaker 5: So I guess along those lines, let's just say someone
- 6:31Speaker 5: is going along and they've never heard of Cunt Squad before. Like,
- 6:34Speaker 5: what three songs of yours should they listen to to
- 6:36Speaker 5: get to know the band a bit better?
- 6:37Speaker 6: I can't answer that one.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Piss and Purge.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Maybe.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Anything off the new album.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:51Speaker 3: The album's great.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Obviously, a little bit more focused, this one here. The
- 6:59Speaker 1: first one was a bit all over the shop in
- 7:01Speaker 1: terms of, you know, direction. And we had to sort
- 7:05Speaker 1: of really redefine how we're going about it because it
- 7:09Speaker 1: may have been a bit confusing. But I think this
- 7:14Speaker 1: one's spot on in terms of, you know, where I
- 7:17Speaker 1: think people need to sort of see us.
- 7:21Speaker 3: In terms of our direction and evolution. And, of course,
- 7:26Speaker 3: maybe the next one will be different again.
- 7:28Speaker 1: But I believe in making music for, you know, myself
- 7:34Speaker 1: but also show some sort of progress from the previous.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I don't subscribe to that idea of, you know, bands
- 7:45Speaker 1: getting comfortable and parodying themselves to a certain degree.
- 7:49Speaker 4: Yeah, 100%.
- 7:50Speaker 3: I think that's a bit of a cop-out. Yeah, like
- 7:52Speaker 3: I think, you know.
- 7:54Speaker 2: The answer was anything off the new album. The answer
- 7:57Speaker 2: was anything off the new album. All of the above.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Just expanding on that because that's an example of what
- 8:04Speaker 1: I mean. Like the new record is progress from where
- 8:09Speaker 1: we were at whenever it was. Yeah.
- 8:14Speaker 5: And Duck Down South too, like it's a massive two-day
- 8:17Speaker 5: camping event, but bands of the punters are essentially trapped
- 8:20Speaker 5: out in the bush, as you say, but it's an
- 8:22Speaker 5: awesome community vibe. It also means there's no escaping the noise.
- 8:26Speaker 5: How do you guys survive a weekend like that? And
- 8:29Speaker 5: what sort of mindset do you go into knowing that
- 8:32Speaker 5: you're not going to get shut down by coppers or
- 8:34Speaker 5: you're not going to have the whinge in neighbours?
- 8:37Speaker 4: Well, we're a bit, I.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Don't know, thirst in some ways.
- 8:40Speaker 2: We're pretty much in our environment there if they can't
- 8:42Speaker 2: shut us up.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's– it'll be a nice change because often
- 8:49Speaker 1: with these, you know, city festivals, you do get the
- 8:55Speaker 1: appearance of the odd cop or, you know, depending on
- 8:58Speaker 1: where the venue is, maybe you do get complaints. And
- 9:00Speaker 1: if the venue has, like, residents living upstairs, there's all
- 9:03Speaker 1: sorts of things that can impact. I think on shows
- 9:06Speaker 1: like that, how do we survive it? I don't know.
- 9:08Speaker 7: Have we really had to survive a long sort of–
- 9:11Speaker 7: I don't think we've ever done, like, a– a real
- 9:14Speaker 7: sort of camping, well, we've never done a camping outdoor fest.
- 9:19Speaker 3: We've done outdoor fests, but not a camping one. So
- 9:22Speaker 3: that'll be a newbie for us.
- 9:26Speaker 5: Well, and it's also an all-ages thing, so you take
- 9:29Speaker 5: the kiddies along too. So you guys, to put it bluntly,
- 9:33Speaker 5: like you've got a bit of crass language and stuff
- 9:36Speaker 5: about you. Do you think about that before you go
- 9:39Speaker 5: on stage, like no one is going to be kids
- 9:41Speaker 5: out there? Does it affect you or do you just
- 9:42Speaker 5: go out and.
- 9:43Speaker 4: Do what you do?
- 9:44Speaker 2: The kids love it.
- 9:45Speaker 3: The kids love us. Like it's crazy.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Like our best responses have been from young sort of, Adolescent?
- 9:53Speaker 2: Yeah, the best shows we play are all ages shows. Yeah, right.
- 9:57Speaker 2: The kids just go off, yeah, every time.
- 10:00Speaker 1: And I think it's because they, I think they get
- 10:03Speaker 1: it like in terms of it's not, you know, it's
- 10:07Speaker 1: not difficult to sort of, you.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Know, process our message and what we're doing.
- 10:15Speaker 2: It's not like.
- 10:17Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know. I mean, apart from press language, which,
- 10:21Speaker 3: you know, can... Most banks will, you know, cross that path.
- 10:25Speaker 3: But I think ideally.
- 10:27Speaker 4: It's part of your DNA. Like, you don't do it
- 10:29Speaker 4: just for the sake of doing it. You know, like,
- 10:31Speaker 4: it's actually.
- 10:32Speaker 5: If someone talks about Tum Squad, you know what you're
- 10:35Speaker 5: going to get because that's just you guys being real.
- 10:38Speaker 4: So that's what, I think, separates it.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I think that people that have seen us will probably
- 10:44Speaker 1: know I mean, we're the first to take the mickey
- 10:47Speaker 1: out of ourselves in some regards, so it's not like
- 10:50Speaker 1: we take it seriously. But one thing for sure is
- 10:52Speaker 1: that there's an honesty to what we do. I mean,
- 10:57Speaker 1: I couldn't contrive it even if I wanted to, to
- 10:59Speaker 1: be honest.
- 11:00Speaker 3: But, yeah, like I think, you know.
- 11:03Speaker 1: There's integrity and authenticity in, I believe.
- 11:10Speaker 4: In metal generally.
- 11:11Speaker 3: And it is metal for it.
- 11:13Speaker 1: That the crowds that follow metal, they're a special sort
- 11:16Speaker 1: of crowd, right? They're usually outcasts anyway. So, look, you know,
- 11:23Speaker 1: I think if kids relate to it because they're outcasts,
- 11:27Speaker 1: I don't know, or like I don't know where they're sitting,
- 11:30Speaker 1: but I do know that.
- 11:32Speaker 3: They do get into what we do. And I don't
- 11:35Speaker 3: know why that is, to be honest.
- 11:37Speaker 6: A lot of other bands, I guess, sort of come
- 11:39Speaker 6: across as pretty serious and we don't at all. I
- 11:43Speaker 6: don't think, in our live shows. We're there having fun and, yeah,
- 11:50Speaker 6: encourage the chaos.
- 11:52Speaker 5: And I think kids love it too because when they
- 11:54Speaker 5: tell their mum and dad about the band, they're actually
- 11:56Speaker 5: allowed to say the word cunt.
- 11:58Speaker 3: I know, right?
- 11:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Well, you've probably heard the story of, well, the umlauts
- 12:04Speaker 1: on our name actually changes the pronunciation. So if we're
- 12:10Speaker 1: not allowed to say cunt, and there's another story about
- 12:13Speaker 1: a venue in Brisbane, which I'll mention if you want
- 12:16Speaker 1: in a minute, but it's.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Pronounced Coombsgard, right?
- 12:21Speaker 4: Okay, I did not know that.
- 12:22Speaker 3: It sounds very Northern European. Doesn't it?
- 12:25Speaker 1: So that was when we first started the band, it was,
- 12:31Speaker 1: you know, Steve, our previous guitarist, who's now deceased, he
- 12:35Speaker 1: was like, well, I tell.
- 12:36Speaker 3: My mum, is she asking me what band I'm playing?
- 12:40Speaker 3: And I said, well, that's why we have the oomlets, right?
- 12:43Speaker 4: So you can't just tell her.
- 12:44Speaker 3: It's called Coop's Guard, right? So that's how we get
- 12:47Speaker 3: away with, you know, in certain situations.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Yeah, you've got to have a backup plan.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Yeah, you've got to have plan B.
- 12:55Speaker 1: But, yeah, look, the name is polarising at best, but
- 12:59Speaker 1: I couldn't give a fuck because, like, it is what
- 13:01Speaker 1: it is.
- 13:02Speaker 3: And, you know.
- 13:04Speaker 4: It's so refreshing to hear. This is so refreshing to
- 13:07Speaker 4: hear in the modern age.
- 13:08Speaker 1: But I think, absolutely, the current, you know, generation of
- 13:15Speaker 1: PC kind of, I don't know, enforces.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Oversaturation?
- 13:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think it goes too far sometimes.
- 13:23Speaker 1: I mean, we use that word in all sorts of ways,
- 13:27Speaker 1: and it can be a term of endearment, it can
- 13:29Speaker 1: be a term of derogatory term, if you want.
- 13:32Speaker 3: To use it that way. But for me, you know,
- 13:34Speaker 3: it has its roots in feminism.
- 13:38Speaker 1: So... If you do your research, you would know about Kunti,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and I'll often speak about it because people keep bringing up,
- 13:45Speaker 1: you know, that word, and there's a reason for it.
- 13:49Speaker 3: So if people want to know more about it, they
- 13:51Speaker 3: can just look it up. It's Kunti.
- 13:52Speaker 1: So that's where that comes from. It's not really that
- 13:56Speaker 1: we wanted to call it Kunt Squad because there's a
- 14:01Speaker 1: reason for it being that, and that is part of it.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Not all of it because we like to say, well,
- 14:06Speaker 3: we can't, right?
- 14:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:09Speaker 5: I love to say cunt.
- 14:12Speaker 4: I've never had a problem with.
- 14:14Speaker 1: It, though.
- 14:15Speaker 5: I've never had a problem with it. I was born
- 14:17Speaker 5: saying that word. You know, I reckon I get tagged
- 14:20Speaker 5: on Facebook. Every time someone has got anything with the
- 14:23Speaker 5: word cunt in it, I get tagged, even if I
- 14:25Speaker 5: don't know the person. I just seem to be tagged
- 14:27Speaker 5: with everything that's got cunt in it. I don't know
- 14:29Speaker 5: if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
- 14:31Speaker 3: You would be a good cunt, right?
- 14:34Speaker 4: One of the best cunts, mate.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Yeah, you're the best cunt.
- 14:38Speaker 5: Now, talking about your album, like, I hope I've got
- 14:40Speaker 5: this right too, but you mentioned that Satan's Cock took
- 14:43Speaker 5: a couple of years of introspective revamping and tinkering and
- 14:48Speaker 5: essentially restarting after the first few tracks weren't what you wanted. Like,
- 14:52Speaker 5: now you've been touring these songs live, like, how has
- 14:54Speaker 5: that painstaking studio perfectionism paid off when you're unleashing these
- 14:59Speaker 5: tracks in a live setting?
- 15:01Speaker 3: Well, the thing is with that is we.
- 15:05Speaker 1: originally had the idea of just putting out like an EP.
- 15:08Speaker 1: And then Wormhole Death, who we signed to, were like, oh, no,
- 15:13Speaker 1: you know, we want an album. And they re-signed with
- 15:17Speaker 1: us even without listening to it, which is really nice.
- 15:21Speaker 3: But for us in terms of to be able.
- 15:23Speaker 1: To produce an album as opposed to four songs, it
- 15:28Speaker 1: was a hard slog because we needed to have this
- 15:32Speaker 1: product like.
- 15:34Speaker 4: Pretty much finished.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Straight away and because we'd taken so long initially the
- 15:38Speaker 1: first lot of songs we did were was pretty awful
- 15:42Speaker 1: and that's when the the introspection come.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Along and we had a bit of um.
- 15:49Speaker 1: It was a bit of uh angst within the band
- 15:53Speaker 1: about things like down tuning again and you know cleaning
- 15:59Speaker 1: up the sounds you know, how our distortions sounded, you know, gating,
- 16:05Speaker 1: all the usual shit that musicians talk about. But it
- 16:08Speaker 1: was time for a real sort of readjustment so that
- 16:12Speaker 1: when we went in to record again properly, it was
- 16:16Speaker 1: going to sound, sonically sound better than the first one
- 16:21Speaker 1: because I had this sound in my head and it
- 16:23Speaker 1: wasn't what we'd done.
- 16:25Speaker 3: It was where I was going with.
- 16:26Speaker 4: It and.
- 16:29Speaker 3: The first four songs just, It was not there and had.
- 16:32Speaker 1: To start again because we down tuned again, re-looked at
- 16:38Speaker 1: the structures, re-looked at the sounds. And when we went
- 16:41Speaker 1: in again, it seemed to, you know, flow a lot better.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Having said that, though, even within the studio, there was
- 16:50Speaker 1: a lot.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Of changes as we were doing it, which is cool. Like,
- 16:56Speaker 3: I don't mind that. Like, Jason was.
- 16:59Speaker 1: very patient with us because I kept going on about, no,
- 17:03Speaker 1: you've got to, I want, you know.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Quiet bits in those sections.
- 17:08Speaker 1: And he's like, you know, he had trouble kind of
- 17:12Speaker 1: really nailing the sound that I'd had in my head.
- 17:18Speaker 1: And he was going through a bit of a rough
- 17:20Speaker 1: patch himself. So he wasn't, I think, fully focused either.
- 17:26Speaker 8: And During that period, our other guitarist departed and we
- 17:35Speaker 8: brought Nick in to do the lead.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Now, Nick came in the very last.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I came in.
- 17:40Speaker 6: Most of the album was already done, really, and I
- 17:44Speaker 6: just laid down some solos. At the time, I didn't
- 17:47Speaker 6: really even understand or know the songs. We'd done like
- 17:52Speaker 6: two rehearsals, I think. before going in the studio. And
- 17:56Speaker 6: I hadn't even played live with the band or anything
- 17:58Speaker 6: at that stage.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Yes, that was a hard call for you. Yeah.
- 18:02Speaker 6: Looking back, like, it would have been nice to have
- 18:05Speaker 6: some more time with the songs and sort of develop them.
- 18:09Speaker 2: But on the other hand, like, you know, I.
- 18:11Speaker 6: Was brought in initially just to play the solos and
- 18:15Speaker 6: get the job done and got it done. But, I mean,
- 18:20Speaker 6: I think With time, those songs have developed live a
- 18:23Speaker 6: little bit just because, you know, you build that familiarity
- 18:28Speaker 6: and everybody throws in sort of their own little bits
- 18:34Speaker 6: and pieces that they personalise it with. And, yeah, the
- 18:39Speaker 6: recordings don't really reflect that, which I guess is unfortunate
- 18:42Speaker 6: because the songs have sort of developed a little bit
- 18:45Speaker 6: since then live, I reckon.
- 18:46Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure.
- 18:47Speaker 3: But that's probably typical of a lot of bands, you know.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. And then, you know, as you play them,
- 18:53Speaker 1: you throw in little, you know, bits and pieces that
- 18:57Speaker 1: don't exist on the record.
- 18:58Speaker 3: So that's okay. That's cool. You know, it is what
- 19:01Speaker 3: it is. And I suppose there's a difference between recordings
- 19:05Speaker 3: and the live anyway.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Oh, 100%.
- 19:07Speaker 1: So it's always good to be able to capture that
- 19:11Speaker 1: energy and the nuances on, you know, you.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Know, tape if you can, but it's such a hard task.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Like how many bands do we know that, you know,
- 19:23Speaker 1: you listen to the album, recorded album, and then you
- 19:27Speaker 1: see them.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Live and it's gone all down. It's either better live
- 19:32Speaker 3: or it's actually not as good.
- 19:33Speaker 6: Yeah, I've watched a lot of docos and a lot
- 19:37Speaker 6: of bands like developing their albums in the studio, which,
- 19:41Speaker 6: you know, back in our day that never used to happen.
- 19:44Speaker 6: you'd go to a studio with an album sort of thing. Yeah,
- 19:48Speaker 6: so we did a bit.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Of that actually.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Because when we put down the tracks we did a
- 19:52Speaker 1: lot of cutting and pasting of bits that we wanted
- 19:55Speaker 1: and changed some drums like that had not been played
- 19:58Speaker 1: I mean the marbles of freaking you know the software
- 20:03Speaker 1: these days.
- 20:03Speaker 6: Like what have you been using Pro Tools yeah Pro
- 20:07Speaker 6: Tools sorry mind blank but Pro Tools is like that.
- 20:10Speaker 3: You can just do shit like that. It's not like
- 20:13Speaker 3: the old days when you had the.
- 20:14Speaker 4: Tapes and you were doing... Yeah, you had to.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Get everything alive. So hard.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Pro Tools makes it so easy to make these adjustments
- 20:25Speaker 1: as you record it.
- 20:27Speaker 3: We did a bit of that.
- 20:29Speaker 1: When we were, you know, even before mixing down, like
- 20:34Speaker 1: before that, like can we just fix this structure up?
- 20:37Speaker 3: And really it shouldn't happen. Because time is money.
- 20:41Speaker 2: You'd like to think it doesn't happen, but a lot
- 20:43Speaker 2: of bands do it.
- 20:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:46Speaker 5: 99% of them do.
- 20:48Speaker 3: From, you know, like a money perspective, it's not like
- 20:50Speaker 3: we have, like, a lot of money.
- 20:52Speaker 1: So I think bands are limited by that sometimes.
- 20:57Speaker 3: I don't know, like, unless.
- 20:59Speaker 1: You're signed to a major label and they're throwing money
- 21:02Speaker 1: at you, mind you, you.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Wouldn't want that because, You've got to pay it back
- 21:05Speaker 3: in abundance. Yeah, well, that's it, with interest and, yeah, whatever.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:11Speaker 4: All right, guys. Well, thanks for your time. It's been
- 21:15Speaker 4: a pleasure catching up again.
- 21:16Speaker 5: Dark Down South is on November 20th and 21st in
- 21:19Speaker 5: the western part of Australia.

- 21:25Speaker 5: I'm going to make it to one of them one
- 21:26Speaker 5: day soon and we'll camp out and party.
