- 0:00Hey, welcome to the integrate this a tech podcast.
- 0:02I'm David Byrne joined by Stephanie Howell very
- 0:06excited to have Stephanie on Stephanie is the
- 0:08education strategist for school AI Spent on the
- 0:12podcast before I got a chance to talk And so
- 0:15let's talk about is the first real quick because
- 0:18it's the last day Last day we made it. Yeah,
- 0:22and and while it was refreshing and and great
- 0:25and everything We're hitting the downslope, right?
- 0:29Yeah, but As you went through the conference
- 0:32and everything, how was your experience the whole
- 0:33time? My conference experience was amazing. It's
- 0:35great to see people that you talk to virtually
- 0:38or Marco Polo each other back and forth. And
- 0:41so seeing those folks in person in real time
- 0:44and like hugging them and touching them, that
- 0:46sounds really bad. But, you know, just being
- 0:49able to see people is a whole new experience.
- 0:51And that's just what fires me up about ISTE is
- 0:54those connections. And you know, a lot of people
- 0:56are coming to ISTE. So this is like the conference
- 0:59if you want to see all your people. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:02and that's like for us, too I mean we we only
- 1:04met online. Yeah, so yeah, so it's nice to actually
- 1:07be in person know that we're each real Like oh,
- 1:10you're not AI. Yeah How many years have you been
- 1:14coming to see us since 2018? Okay, so the first
- 1:17one was Chicago So is that yeah, it was okay.
- 1:20Awesome. And then we should call us overwhelmed
- 1:24Yeah. Linking back and like the layout of Chicago
- 1:26was a little different. Also the session rooms
- 1:29would fill up and so I'd be waiting in line.
- 1:32Where here, I felt like I was able to get in
- 1:34most sessions which was really appreciated because
- 1:37in Chicago you were waiting if you wanted to
- 1:39go to like a session. It was just not fun waiting
- 1:43in line. Yeah. And yeah. Yeah and at that time
- 1:47were you doing sessions? No, okay. Yeah, I was
- 1:51just attending Yeah, it was the year that we
- 1:53won. It sees distinguished district and so we
- 1:56were going to get the award My boss has gone
- 1:58for years and I was new to the role. I was right
- 2:02out of the classroom and so I was like What are
- 2:06these people? And why are they so excited? Yeah,
- 2:09right. And now you're doing sessions and you're
- 2:13in the expo hall, right? Can you talk a little
- 2:16bit about the sessions that you did while you
- 2:18were here? Any that you want to highlight? Yeah,
- 2:21some of the sessions that I did love the poster
- 2:23sessions because you have a giant poster that
- 2:25you get to make and we print it off at Walgreens.
- 2:28And then you can present about it. So that session
- 2:30was all about me, Ethan Malik's work and how
- 2:33he's using AI. And so like the four different
- 2:35phases of AI as a tutor, as a coach, as supporting
- 2:39student learning. And so really talking with
- 2:41people because posters are where they come up
- 2:43to you, you have a conversation with them. And
- 2:46we were able to just kind of say, what's going
- 2:48on in your district with AI? And from there,
- 2:50we were able to have conversations of, you know,
- 2:52the prompting. You can make it a coach if you
- 2:54prompt it this way. You can make it a tutor if
- 2:57you prompt it this way, you know, in that kind
- 2:58of language. So that session was really cool
- 3:00just hearing from other people and learning from
- 3:02others and not just me presenting, but listening
- 3:05to what they're doing. And then I had a couple
- 3:07of different playground sessions. So those are
- 3:09kind of similar to posters, but you have a table.
- 3:12And so I'm sitting at a table with Greta, who's
- 3:14my co -present. and we're just kind of sharing
- 3:17different resources about visible learning. We
- 3:20talked about poetry and storytelling, which was
- 3:22really cool. We had a lot of STEM folks coming
- 3:24up and we were like, do you use poetry with STEM?
- 3:27And they're like, no, but we want to. And so,
- 3:29you know, that was kind of a cool way to kind
- 3:31of think through poetry and talking through that
- 3:34kind of work. Also had like the hour long interactive
- 3:37sessions as well. So I did questions to creation
- 3:41where we talked about how students will research
- 3:43in a school AI space. And then they take the
- 3:46research that they learned in that space from
- 3:48interviewing somebody. and then they apply it
- 3:50through creation using Adobe. So like Adobe Podcasts
- 3:54or Adobe's newsletter templates or videos. And
- 3:58so that was a fun one that I did with Melissa
- 3:59Kincaid. And then I did a, I'm gonna say it wrong,
- 4:04Hearts, Humor, and Hustle with Kat Crawford,
- 4:06who's the lunch lady, if you don't know that.
- 4:09And then Manny from Edpuzzle as well. And so
- 4:12we were talking just about the heart that teachers
- 4:14put into teaching and sharing stories from our
- 4:17experience. And then we were kind of thinking
- 4:20through what was the hustle that we had to do,
- 4:22right? What was that hustle that we had to do?
- 4:23And then we shared as a group of their strategies
- 4:26that they were using too. So lots of different
- 4:28sessions, a busy conference, but it was really
- 4:31great just hearing from different people and
- 4:33not just from the United States. There was a
- 4:35very large international presence this year from
- 4:38New Zealand and Egypt and the UK and all these
- 4:42different places and so being able to hear their
- 4:46barriers because one teacher we're talking about
- 4:49parents and how they are working with others
- 4:51and she's like I can't even talk to my parents
- 4:53it's a mentor that she has to go through and
- 4:55I'm like that's good and that's bad right like
- 4:57that's that would be nice to not have to deal
- 4:58with parents all the time as an educator but
- 5:01Not being able to go directly to your parents.
- 5:03That's something that's a dish issue for her.
- 5:05Yeah. Yeah, that's super interesting. And I think
- 5:08they said it was like over 60 countries. I want
- 5:10to talk to you too about so we had Thomas Riddle
- 5:16on as well. And you were doing some interesting
- 5:19stuff with that. You had a book study that you're
- 5:21doing and then the Epcot thing. Yes. Right. So
- 5:24you talk a little bit about that and like what
- 5:26you think of the book and all that. Yeah. So
- 5:28we did a book study with Thomas Riddle and he
- 5:31is incredible. And he does this whole imagineering
- 5:36kind of world with Disney and he just loves Disney.
- 5:39I am not a Disney fan. So I was like, okay, this
- 5:42sounds cool, right? But then somebody on LinkedIn,
- 5:46because we were at South By. So it's a conference
- 5:50in Texas and we were at this conference. That's
- 5:52where I met Thomas and so lucky for that connection.
- 5:55And I think we took a picture with him and his
- 5:57book and somebody was like, we should do a book
- 5:59study on this. And I'm a doer. So I'm like, let's
- 6:01do it. And so, you know, in a moment we had a
- 6:04Google form, we had a WhatsApp group, we had
- 6:06a Google group, Google classroom, everything
- 6:09was all set up. And so what was really cool about
- 6:12the book study is the WhatsApp group was like
- 6:14the community where people could chat and share
- 6:16like, hey, I'm trying this in my classroom, because
- 6:18a lot of it started back in April. So some people
- 6:21were able to still try what they were reading
- 6:23live in their schools and districts and their
- 6:26classrooms. And so We had some folks that could
- 6:31attend the live session. So there was bi -weekly
- 6:33sessions led by Tina. My kids were in soccer,
- 6:37so kids come first, not Thomas Riddle. And so
- 6:40with that, I was able to have an asynchronous
- 6:44group. And so what we did is we created AI spaces
- 6:48in school AI for people to process as they're
- 6:51reading at the end of those chapters. And then
- 6:53I was able to use the extension in school AI
- 6:56and partner people up. And so then people had
- 6:59to partner with talking points. So then they
- 7:00would message each other separately in WhatsApp,
- 7:04email, however they wanted to communicate on
- 7:06a Google Meet. And then they could continue that
- 7:08conversation with that other person. So it was
- 7:11more intimate and not just like a, oh, everybody's
- 7:13on this WhatsApp group talking. So it was kind
- 7:16of cool to have the asynchronous piece, the live
- 7:18session, and then again, like that ongoing WhatsApp
- 7:21group with polls and everything to keep that
- 7:23engagement high. Yeah. And then you did the Epcot
- 7:26thing? I did not do it. the Epcot thing, I went
- 7:28to Game Night. I wanted to do Epcot, but school
- 7:31day I was sponsoring Game Night, so went over
- 7:34there and had some, I did not play any games
- 7:36though. I wish I did, but. I was too tired. That's
- 7:39all right. Yeah. And can you talk a little bit,
- 7:41too, just about your role currently at School
- 7:44AI and the things you're working on? Yeah. So
- 7:46at School AI, I'm an education strategist. So
- 7:49I support districts all over the country and
- 7:52world and region with AI implementation. So my
- 7:56job is supporting with the professional learning.
- 7:59But I also work with tech directors and curriculum
- 8:01directors on how are we going to implement School
- 8:03AI in their district. Every district is different.
- 8:06In Texas, they have Huge districts in Ohio, they
- 8:10have smaller districts. And so it's really trying
- 8:12to just build relationships, figure out, okay,
- 8:15what does this look like in our district? Where
- 8:17are teachers out in this district? And kind of
- 8:19customizing and creating an implementation plan
- 8:22that is aligned with their curriculum, their
- 8:24current resources. So it's not just one more
- 8:26thing, but it's enhancing what's already in place
- 8:29to support teachers with that personalized learning,
- 8:32feedback, whatever they need in that district
- 8:35to really support those needs. Okay, great, and
- 8:39so I got one last question for you. What type
- 8:42of things do you have coming, personally, events,
- 8:48social things, books, anything that you have,
- 8:51and socials to follow, what type of stuff do

- 8:58active on LinkedIn. So feel free to reach out
- 9:00on there. Thank you. Just search my name Stephanie
- 9:02how And then I also have a book coming out with
- 9:07Matthew Joseph and his like publishing crew So
- 9:09working through that book getting all those writings
- 9:12out of my brain onto paper and then also I'm
- 9:16trying to think there's anything else. Yeah live
- 9:18in life and Soccer is coming up again soon fall
- 9:21soccer. So that's what's going on with the family
