• 2:47
  Speaker 2: Story number one.
• 2:48
Speaker 3: It is very clear that President Donald Trump is a
• 2:50
Speaker 3: man who is on a mission to have peace through
• 2:53
Speaker 3: strength wherever he canon stop senseless wars. We've seen the
• 2:58
Speaker 3: deal that he's done in the Middle East, and we
• 3:00
Speaker 3: now know that he's turned towards what's happening in Russia
• 3:03
Speaker 3: and Ukraine. Well, there has been some late developments and
• 3:08
Speaker 3: the US has announced new sanctions the target Russia's two
• 3:13
Speaker 3: largest oil companies, Rosneff and Luke Oil, including many of
• 3:18
Speaker 3: their subsidiaries. These sanctions marked the first time in Trump's
• 3:23
Speaker 3: second term that his administration has placed new sanctions on
• 3:28
Speaker 3: Russia over the Ukraine War. So much for Russian collusion,
• 3:32
Speaker 3: as the media lied to you about for years. The
• 3:36
Speaker 3: US Treasury, through the Office of the Foreign Assets Control,
• 3:40
Speaker 3: explicitly said the move is meant to degrade Russia's ability
• 3:45
Speaker 3: to fund its war machine and hurt its economy, because
• 3:49
Speaker 3: if you know what's going on in Russia, you know
• 3:52
Speaker 3: they're barely staying alive economically because of the oil that
• 3:56
  Speaker 3: they're selling.
• 3:58
  Speaker 1: Now.
• 3:58
Speaker 3: The announcement came shortly after a plan meeting between Donald
• 4:02
Speaker 3: Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was canceled, signaling escalating
• 4:08
Speaker 3: frustration by the White House and Donald Trump. He meant
• 4:12
Speaker 3: it when he said it was time for peace. Now
• 4:15
Speaker 3: Here are the implications and the likely effects of what
• 4:18
Speaker 3: the President has just done. The economic pressure on Russia
• 4:22
Speaker 3: is real because Russia's war is costing them a lot
• 4:26
Speaker 3: of money, and by targeting Russia's biggest oil companies, the
• 4:30
Speaker 3: US is going after one of the major revenue resources
• 4:34
Speaker 3: that supports Russia's military and also is propping up its economy,
• 4:38
Speaker 3: which is teetering. This could force Russia to either lower
• 4:42
Speaker 3: the price of its oil, thus reducing revenue, or reduce
• 4:46
Speaker 3: production and exports. Both of those options hurt its financial
• 4:51
Speaker 3: stability and their ability to sustain large scale war for
• 4:56
Speaker 3: a extended period of time. Now there's also pressure for
• 5:00
Speaker 3: diplomacy and a ceasefire. The Treasury Secretary's Scott Descent said
• 5:05
Speaker 3: the sanctions are meant to support peace efforts, saying quote,
• 5:10
Speaker 3: now is the time to stop the killing and for
• 5:13
Speaker 3: an immediate ceasefire. So the sanctions are being framed partly
• 5:17
Speaker 3: as a lever for diplomacy, not just punishment. Russia has
• 5:23
Speaker 3: deep trade and energy links with major buyers. This includes
• 5:27
Speaker 3: India and China, who is taking a significant amount of
• 5:31
Speaker 3: their oil that might not be fully impacted by the
• 5:35
Speaker 3: US sanctions alone. Analysts say, we'll have to wait and see,
• 5:39
Speaker 3: but what we do know is the sanctions depend heavily
• 5:43
Speaker 3: on enforcement and also on US allies joining and coordinating
• 5:49
Speaker 3: in the sanctioned effort. If other big buyers continue business,
• 5:54
Speaker 3: the impact will be weaker than we need it to be,
• 5:57
Speaker 3: and there are possible global markets effects as well, spikes
• 6:02
Speaker 3: and all prices if Russia's supply is constrained. This is
• 6:05
Speaker 3: part of the reason why the president said we need
• 6:07
Speaker 3: to become energy independent, going back to Drill, Baby Drill.
• 6:12
Speaker 3: The fact that this is the first new sanction in
• 6:14
Speaker 3: Trump's second term also suggests there may have been internal
• 6:18
Speaker 3: or strategic hesitations earlier on to give a chance also
• 6:23
Speaker 3: for there to be real conversations that deal with peace.
• 6:27
Speaker 3: It remains to be seen if the pressure will persist
• 6:30
Speaker 3: or if Donald Trump plans on ratcheting up the pressure,
• 6:34
Speaker 3: which brings me to the announcement Center. Mullen on the
• 6:38
Speaker 3: new Russian sanction speaking with Jake Tapper on CNN, this
• 6:42
Speaker 3: is what he had to say about the new move.
• 6:45
Speaker 4: Do you think that there needs to be even harsher sanctions?
• 6:47
Speaker 4: And the reason I ask is because obviously August fifteenth,
• 6:51
Speaker 4: I believe it was, was the summit in Alaska where
• 6:56
Speaker 4: President Trump was hoping that Vladimir Putin would agree to
• 7:00
Speaker 4: any sort of ceasefire, and not only did he not
• 7:03
Speaker 4: get a cease fire, Putin since the US literally rolled
• 7:07
Speaker 4: out the carpet for him in the United States of
• 7:10
Speaker 4: America on American land, Putin has upped the tenor of
• 7:15
Speaker 4: the war. Some of the worst attacks on Ukraine have
• 7:18
Speaker 4: happened since then. And I'm wondering if President Trump you
• 7:22
Speaker 4: think needs to be even more aggressive.
• 7:24
Speaker 5: Well, this is step one. The President and Congress has
• 7:27
Speaker 5: talked multiple times what the next step might be. We
• 7:31
Speaker 5: have been in briefed or we've been in briefings, we've
• 7:33
Speaker 5: been in classified settings. This is literally the first step
• 7:38
Speaker 5: to put more pressure on Russia. If we need to
• 7:42
Speaker 5: I believe we probably will. I don't think Putin if
• 7:45
Speaker 5: someone is going to pay attention the first time his
• 7:47
Speaker 5: hand has slapped, I think you're going to see this
• 7:49
Speaker 5: get ratcheted up farther and farther to the point to
• 7:52
Speaker 5: where either we're going to bring them to their knees economically,
• 7:56
Speaker 5: or they're going to decide that fighting the Ukraine isn't
• 7:58
Speaker 5: worth it. At the same time, I wouldn't be surprised
• 8:01
Speaker 5: if you start seeing us give the accessibility to new
• 8:05
Speaker 5: weapons for Europe to buy for Ukraine to be able
• 8:09
Speaker 5: to fight against Russia and their aggression in Ukraine. As
• 8:12
Speaker 5: I said, Jake, this is just the first step. But
• 8:16
Speaker 5: this is the first step of a lot of options
• 8:18
Speaker 5: we have on the table.
• 8:20
Speaker 3: It's very clear, as you could hear there from cinner Mullin,
• 8:23
Speaker 3: that this is a new path forward. We tried to
• 8:26
Speaker 3: have well diplomacy work, and obviously Vladimir Putin is not
• 8:30
Speaker 3: working in that way. So as he described it, we
• 8:32
Speaker 3: can bring them to their knees economically, or they can
• 8:36
Speaker 3: decide that fighting Ukraine isn't worth it. It's the first
• 8:40
Speaker 3: step of a lot of options we have on the table.
• 8:43
Speaker 3: And there also seems to be real unity behind this idea,
• 8:47
Speaker 3: as you know that Senators are behind it. But what
• 8:50
Speaker 3: is the House side saying. Mike Johnson on the Russian sanctions.
• 8:54
Speaker 3: Here's what he had to say as well.
• 8:56
Speaker 5: Now, and thank you so much for being here, Speaker Johnson,
• 8:59
Speaker 5: because you had said before that you thought sanctions on
• 9:01
Speaker 5: Russia were long overdue.
• 9:03
Speaker 6: In your words, do you think that these moves tonight
• 9:05
Speaker 6: go far enough. Well, it's a very important step. We
• 9:08
Speaker 6: applaud the president. He's returning peace through strength, and that's
• 9:12
Speaker 6: a common theme now that we've seen exhibited around the globe,
• 9:15
Speaker 6: the strength of his personality. You heard the UN Secretary General,
• 9:18
Speaker 6: who you caught earlier this afternoon, he said, in his
• 9:21
Speaker 6: own words, President Trump is the only figure on the
• 9:24
Speaker 6: planet strong enough to help bring an end of that war.
• 9:27
Speaker 6: And you have to compel Russia to engage in the
• 9:30
Speaker 6: peace process. They've shown they cannot be trusted.
• 9:33
  Speaker 4: There's a big.
• 9:33
Speaker 6: Appetite in Congress to have sanctions like this, and I
• 9:36
Speaker 6: think it's a very important step.
• 9:38
Speaker 3: Yet again, you see unity between Republicans and the Senate,
• 9:42
Speaker 3: Republicans in the House and the President of the United
• 9:45
Speaker 3: States of America, which brings us back to what Trump
• 9:48
Speaker 3: has now said about these new sanctions. Trump said of
• 9:51
Speaker 3: the sanctions, quote, it was time. He described the sanction
• 9:55
Speaker 3: on Russia's oil giants as very big and tremendous. During
• 9:59
Speaker 3: a meeting with the NATO Secretary General, he expressed that
• 10:04
Speaker 3: the meeting with Putin was canceled because it didn't feel
• 10:07
Speaker 3: right to me. It didn't feel like we were going
• 10:10
Speaker 3: to get to the place we have to get. Earlier
• 10:14
Speaker 3: this year, Trump threatened tariffs and secondary sanctions if Russia
• 10:19
Speaker 3: did not agree to a cease fire. For example, he
• 10:22
Speaker 3: said he might impose a twenty five to fifty percent
• 10:25
Speaker 3: tariff on oil from Russia on countries buying Russian oil.
• 10:30
Speaker 3: Trump also expressed frustration with Vladimir Putin, saying, quote, we
• 10:35
Speaker 3: get a lot of bull blank thrown at us by Putin.
• 10:38
Speaker 3: We want a deal, but we weren't seeing it. The
• 10:42
Speaker 3: president also has backing the majority of Republicans support additional
• 10:47
Speaker 3: economic sanctions on Russia. For example, a recent poll shows
• 10:52
Speaker 3: eighty six percent of Republicans back further sanctions to force
• 10:57
Speaker 3: an end to the war. Now, some Republicans, including those
• 11:02
Speaker 3: in the White House, had also delayed pushing for sanction
• 11:05
Speaker 3: legislation until a possible Trump Putin meeting, indicating hesitation that
• 11:11
Speaker 3: if they did put the sanctions on beforehand, it could
• 11:14
Speaker 3: actually hurt the talks. But now the President has made
• 11:17
Speaker 3: it clear there's a shift, and it suggests that Trump
• 11:20
Speaker 3: administration is moving or being pushed by conservatives for a
• 11:26
Speaker 3: tougher stance on Russia that perhaps was not there weeks ago.
• 11:31
Speaker 3: It also signals to Russia and to buyers of Russian
• 11:35
Speaker 3: energy that the US is united and willing to escalate
• 11:39
Speaker 3: economic tools, not just diplomacy, And for allies, the US
• 11:45
Speaker 3: is implicitly inviting coordination. The Treasury statement, we encourage quote
• 11:50
Speaker 3: our allies to join us, signaling that other countries may
• 11:55
Speaker 3: want to do the exact same thing in their country
• 11:57
Speaker 3: that America is doing right now. And finally, for Ukraine,
• 12:02
Speaker 3: it may increase leverage by pressuring Russia, but it does
• 12:05
Speaker 3: not automatically guarantee a cease fire or an end to
• 12:08
Speaker 3: the war. When you're dealing with someone like Vladimir Putin,
• 12:12
Speaker 3: who doesn't even care about his own people, this could
• 12:15
Speaker 3: drag on. But for the global energy and trade flow
• 12:19
Speaker 3: targeting Russia's oil sector, as President Trump has decided to
• 12:22
Speaker 3: do can affect global markets and hurt Russia significantly, which
• 12:27
Speaker 3: is exactly why the President of United States of America
• 12:30
Speaker 3: is leading in this way. We also know that the
• 12:34
Speaker 3: US will follow up with more sanctions Russian banks, on
• 12:38
Speaker 3: buyers of Russian energy or shipping in transport to deepen
• 12:43
Speaker 3: the pressure. There's a very good chance that is going
• 12:46
Speaker 3: to be needed. And then what will happen to Russian
• 12:49
Speaker 3: oil buyers like China and India? How will they respond.
• 12:53
Speaker 3: What we do know now is this is a new
• 12:55
Speaker 3: pathway in negotiations with President Trump and Vladimir Putin, and
• 13:01
Speaker 3: it's clear Donald Trump isn't messing around.
