- 0:05The reduced working week productivity or slow?
- 0:09Hello, welcome to Mark and Pete where we're making sense of
- 0:13today's world, one collapsing institution at a time.
- 0:18Today, very serious question. Should the working week be
- 0:22shorter or I'll be just looking for an acceptable way to stay in
- 0:26bed? Yes, this is Mark and Pete, 2
- 0:29blokes with half an opinion. Now here's our first thought.
- 0:34Busy doing nothing? Some folks seek to reduce their
- 0:39working week and then gain an additional day in bed.
- 0:43But why not show some cheek and settle to go off peak to have a
- 0:47five day tea break instead? Yes, maybe some people might
- 0:52argue that that's exactly the way it is.
- 0:55However, the Dutch have a different view now.
- 0:58Quietly, they've been adopting just a four day week.
- 1:01Why is this? Well, in their view, some of the
- 1:04people in Amsterdam in particular believe that this is
- 1:07actually a more productive way of working.
- 1:10The world is changing, people are working from home, they need
- 1:13more flexibility. More importantly, is it actually
- 1:16better to choose a four day week and be more productive than a
- 1:20five day week? Mr. Pete, I ask you, I know you
- 1:23love your duvet days, but really, Surely reducing the
- 1:28working week, That can't be good for anyone.
- 1:31Well, there have been various attempts, haven't there, to put
- 1:34this into practice. There are various different
- 1:36motivations for it in the intro, suggesting that it was just to
- 1:40stay in bed under the duvet. But there are other motivations
- 1:45for it. Sometimes it's lack of
- 1:47availability of electricity. Sometimes it's because, well,
- 1:51there just simply isn't enough work.
- 1:53If everyone's working at 4 weeks, so we'll have less days
- 1:58and then more people get work. There's different motivations
- 2:01that that are put forward at least for this change.
- 2:05But it I, I would suggest my right up front here that yeah, I
- 2:10do think that the five day week isn't really acceptable.
- 2:14I just think it should be 6 days.
- 2:17Well, there is another argument exactly.
- 2:20Now I'm going to come from a from a business perspective and
- 2:23that is, is that I understand the rationale of looking at
- 2:26people's well-being. And I do agree that you know, we
- 2:29already have contracts in place. Most people typically tend to
- 2:33work either a 37 1/2 to 40 hour week.
- 2:36That's like a standard working week and it typically goes from
- 2:40a Monday to Friday. Now there are, of course there
- 2:42are exceptions. There are people who work in
- 2:43retail and other industries and they have to work either on a
- 2:46Saturday or a Sunday, but typically most people work five
- 2:49days. There's another reason as well,
- 2:52because actually most companies will have international
- 2:57customers. Now, that means that you're
- 3:00working on different time zones. In some cases, that means you
- 3:03have to work multiple days and that also means that you need to
- 3:07be available. Now what I would say here is, is
- 3:10that reducing the working week could cause some challenges
- 3:12there because if you're not necessarily aligned, say for
- 3:15example, you've got customers in China and you're based in
- 3:18America, well that could cause some issues.
- 3:21Now I know that some people say, well, it's all about balancing
- 3:24out the workload with the workforce, but I still think
- 3:28that the productivity is more around how you get more out of
- 3:31the individuals rather than reducing their individual days
- 3:35is what is it that they really are looking to do.
- 3:38Now what are the rationales for this is that the FNV, which is
- 3:43like a AA1 of the biggest unions in the the Netherlands is
- 3:48actually trying to lobby to make this official recommendation to
- 3:51go to a four day week. Now I'm all for unions honestly
- 3:57really, but the bottom line is sometimes unions are not always
- 4:01working to the cause of the business.
- 4:03And I think that whilst that you do have your legal rights to
- 4:07potentially reduce your hours if you wish as an individual, I
- 4:11think that from the point of view of business, and let's be
- 4:14honest, the economy is really bad, we need all people on hand
- 4:18to help. So here's my thought, if
- 4:20somebody does want to either maybe you know, sort of reduce
- 4:25their hours, why not balance it against the needs of the
- 4:28business. Now, to your point, that may
- 4:31mean that they might have to work on a Saturday or they might
- 4:34have to work maybe on a Sunday. So Mr. Pete, I was going to say
- 4:38just simply simply having a blanket policy of four day week
- 4:43is is probably going down the wrong path.
- 4:45Surely it has to be more aligned to what the business needs
- 4:49rather than just simply say we're only going to work four
- 4:51days a week. Yes, I, I, I think that's right.
- 4:55And but you see my take on this coming from a Christian point of
- 4:59view is to say that there should be limits on how much you, you
- 5:04are required to work each week in employment.
- 5:07And that should that limit should be your only you're can
- 5:11only work up to six days a week because that's the biblical
- 5:14model. 6 days you shall work and on the 7th you shall W just as
- 5:20God did in creation. That's the the the mandate from
- 5:24the Bible for it. And various attempts to change
- 5:27that routine have failed. Now we have a 2 day weekend.
- 5:33Of course. Why?
- 5:34Why Liam used across the world, not just in Britain and America,
- 5:39but across and Europe and across the world.
- 5:41This idea of a 2 day weekend is quite common.
- 5:45I would argue that that's not actually the biblical mandates
- 5:50that that you you should work for six days, one day.
- 5:54So that's what I was serious as suggesting that six days was a
- 5:58better model. The question is how many hours
- 6:01then how many hours do you work each day and whether you need
- 6:06time, you know, more time off on one of those days.
- 6:08That's fair enough. That's you should have a day of
- 6:11rest, but that's not necessarily the day that you worship.
- 6:16I just put that, you know, in the early church they had
- 6:19Saturday off and they worshipped on Sunday before they have to
- 6:22work. It seems so, you know, they're
- 6:24not necessarily the same. So this is this is this is my my
- 6:27take on it is this yes, the productivity I don't think well,
- 6:32it's been shown in various studies, including national
- 6:36experiments in time of war. They don't agree.
- 6:40If you work more than six days a week in revolutionary France,
- 6:45the 10 day week was tried and that really didn't work.
- 6:50There's there was also a city in China where this was tried, but
- 6:55reducing it doesn't necessarily increase it either because this
- 7:00is my this is now the the peat theory that if you reduce it
- 7:06such you're part time, you end up having a part time attitude
- 7:09to work and as your productivity isn't increased.
- 7:13Well, I agree. Now here's the rub.
- 7:15The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in
- 7:18the Netherlands has confirmed this because it's said that
- 7:21whilst that there is high productivity per worker in some
- 7:25cases in the Netherlands, what it's seen over the last 15 years
- 7:29is the productivity has not grown.
- 7:32Yes, they're in line. So the peat theory is
- 7:35vindicated. Yeah.
- 7:37Well, the bottom line is, is that I think that I understand
- 7:41the Dutch are sort of coming from one perspective on the,
- 7:44should we say the the work of rights side.
- 7:48And it's true that some people have even traded time for money
- 7:52or money for time. And that's something that's
- 7:54another factor as well. But, but the, the general
- 7:58economists have said that really by reducing the working week
- 8:01doesn't mean to say that organisations are actually
- 8:04giving greater productivity. It hasn't actually grown the
- 8:07economy in the way that the perhaps they would have thought.
- 8:10Well, now that that, that all I, that's what I would say is, is
- 8:13that surely you have to sort of sort of adapt to the, to the
- 8:17market forces and what is required of your trading
- 8:23partners. That includes, obviously, Europe
- 8:26and many other countries. Just to, to summarise my view,
- 8:30yes, I, I think that that's correct.
- 8:33I think that really the limit should be 6 days a week that
- 8:36you're required to work. And of those which six days and
- 8:43whether you have your employees working for less, perhaps five
- 8:46days is up to, should be up to the company that's doing the
- 8:49employment. Of course, for state sector, you
- 8:52can perhaps organise things more from a, from, from, from the,
- 8:58from the, you can organise things out more centrally.
- 9:05But I don't think that that's, you know, that should even, that
- 9:09should even be different in that you just have things organised
- 9:12depending what department you're working for, what works for the
- 9:16department, But no more than six.
- 9:18That's what I would say. I worked as a clergyman for, for
- 9:22a few years and during that time I worked a six day week.
- 9:26That was just standard. So it, it can, the six days can
- 9:29be, can be a normal 1. I mean, some people think that
- 9:32actually clergy work a one day week, but that's sort of the
- 9:34matter. Yes.
- 9:36Well, what's interesting here is another angle, which is around
- 9:39women. Yes.
- 9:41Now a study in 2024 found that one in three people in the
- 9:45Netherlands think that mothers with very young children, for
- 9:49example age 3 or younger, should not work more than one day a
- 9:53week. And nearly 80% think that three
- 9:56days a week is the maximum. So that puts a different
- 9:59perspective, doesn't it? But at the end of the day, I
- 10:02still come back to other countries balance, you know,
- 10:05their work life with their private life.
- 10:07They still work A5 day week. So I, I know that, you know,
- 10:11obviously having rights, etcetera, whether it be about
- 10:14you as a, as a worker, depending on your industry.
- 10:18But what do you think about the principle of those who maybe are
- 10:21starting a family? Should they have greater rights
- 10:24to have their their working week reduced?
- 10:27Well, I can give you a very short answer to that.
- 10:30I think the answer is no. I think what we need is
- 10:35incentives for entrepreneurs, for businesses to set up, you
- 10:41know, create more wealth in society.
- 10:44But we, what we don't need is legislation forcing then
- 10:49companies to be less productive and less profitable because,
- 10:54yeah, you can say up to a certain limit or people are
- 10:56going to be more profitable per hour.
- 10:58Yeah, there's going to be a limit for that, isn't there?
- 11:00And I So, no, I don't think that's the case.
- 11:03I think that it should be the case that my this is a preamble
- 11:09to me saying it should be the case that one person, usually
- 11:13the man in most households will be able to afford to run to pay
- 11:18for everything in the household and the mother or some cases the
- 11:21father can stay at home with the children.
- 11:23That's what I think you should aim for, and starting down this
- 11:26route of giving handouts or requiring companies to pay for
- 11:32someone who isn't actually turning up to work is going to
- 11:35in the end mean that we all earn less, so you're less likely.
- 11:39Yes, in. The long run to be able to
- 11:41afford to have time off to look after your children.
- 11:43It's we, it's been done, it's been tried.
- 11:45We've gone down that route for years.
- 11:47Handouts and then onerous requirements on companies.
- 11:51Let's not go down that route any further.
- 11:54Well, I agree. And then just to close on my
- 11:56point of view, I know that the FNV Union in the Netherlands has
- 12:00said that a four day week can help close the gender pay gap.
- 12:05You can gain productivity and less absenteeism.
- 12:09So they claim, well, as far as I'm concerned, when it comes to
- 12:14the economy and when it comes to the workforce, that just sounds
- 12:18like double Dutch to me.
