- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31Let's talk resilience today. We've just come out of a weather
- 0:34pattern. Well, it was Hurricane Debbie,
- 0:36but then it turned into Tropical Storm Debbie.
- 0:39And as it came up the East Coast of the United States, it dumped
- 0:44a lot of water, 20 inches approximately in the area that
- 0:49I'm in. And it just was endless.
- 0:52It was not just all like, you know, OK, this happened in a
- 0:55day. That would have been something
- 0:57interesting in itself, but it happened from Sunday to Friday.
- 1:02So you just it's day after day after day, the torrential
- 1:05downpours, the things that are just seemingly not quitting,
- 1:11water everywhere, everywhere, like just expanding, flooding,
- 1:17you name it, it was happening. And one of the things that's
- 1:21interesting when this happens is what happens to Mother Nature in
- 1:24that process. So you start to think about how
- 1:28it affects, you know, the land itself, especially if the land
- 1:32has been touched. Because then, of course, when we
- 1:35build, you know, you end up disrupting how the sponge effect
- 1:40of the Earth works. So all of a sudden, things don't
- 1:42seem to go down as quickly as they did.
- 1:45Unfortunately here where we are, our farm is set up so that it
- 1:50does do that. Although we ended up with
- 1:52multiple ponds all around the pond, all around the property.
- 1:56The chicken coop was safe, the house was safe, all the rabbit
- 2:01areas safe, everything because we have it elevated.
- 2:04But boy what a mess it made. And the gardens are just done.
- 2:09Like everything got so beat up in the rain and vegetables are
- 2:14done. You know, between the humidity,
- 2:18the heat and the amount of rain we had, it just beat everything
- 2:23up. One would think, oh, this is
- 2:25great. It gives it a really good drink.
- 2:26No, it doesn't. And then the weeds take over.
- 2:30And when I say the weeds take over, they take over.
- 2:33And it's so hot now, can't really even get out here to
- 2:36clean it up because if you're not out here early in the
- 2:39morning and you know, that in itself presents its own issues,
- 2:44you're going to get, you know, the humidity is just going to
- 2:48take you out. So yesterday I had to completely
- 2:51swap out this entire coop area with all the hay inside because
- 2:56it was just so much water, so much humidity.
- 2:59And usually I do this like, you know, every three weeks I just
- 3:03make a complete swap, but it's not as thorough as I had to do.
- 3:07This was like a major one, which I do really every three months
- 3:12I'll do like I'll wash down everything inside and switch it
- 3:15all out. That way I make sure there are
- 3:17no problems in there. I'm I'm on top of it and I had
- 3:21to do this in the humidity and I was drenched from head to toe.
- 3:27The muck is everywhere. I'm up to probably, I have muck
- 3:31boots, extra tough muck boots and the ankle height and the
- 3:35muck was up to the top of them and it's hard to walk in it.
- 3:40I'm sweating, I'm uncomfortable. I've gotten attacked by fire
- 3:44ants multiple times. And I'm not telling you all this
- 3:46because I'm complaining. I'm telling you the part of the
- 3:48story. And my hands have a rash on them
- 3:51because I got into something, touching it, cleaning it up.
- 3:53I don't know. It's not Poison Ivy.
- 3:55Who knows what it is. Reaction to something doesn't
- 3:58matter. So my hands, my feet, my boots,
- 4:01everything is a mess. And you know, there's a part of
- 4:04you that just wants to cry and then you stop and you say, hold
- 4:08on, I have to just stop right now and and collect myself.
- 4:13So I make this plan. I'm going to come out.
- 4:14And then I find out that one of my favorite chickens read
- 4:17somehow got sour crop and she passed away in my arms.
- 4:21As I opened the door to the coop, she came over to me and
- 4:25she literally just died right there.
- 4:28It was. It was the saddest experience
- 4:31I've had. It was like she was waiting for
- 4:32me and I picked her up and she just died right in my arms.
- 4:36And sauerkraut is just a overload in their systems of
- 4:40candida and it builds up in their crop.
- 4:43And she must have eaten something.
- 4:45And if if I had caught it in time, I could have treated it.
- 4:50But the problem was the rain was so bad we couldn't even get out
- 4:53here. There, I mean rain, the Thunder,
- 4:55the lightning, it was so bad. Other than coming out and
- 4:58opening the doors and feeding them, I wasn't out here as much
- 5:01as I normally was. And I would have noticed it
- 5:03because there are telltale signs.
- 5:05So you look at all this in its totality and you say, OK, this
- 5:11is nothing compared to what other people went through.
- 5:13I did not lose a home. I did not lose lives.
- 5:16Nothing like that happened other than losing the chicken.
- 5:20But we still feel the weight. So is it wrong to feel the
- 5:25weight? Is it wrong to feel what your
- 5:27emotions are telling you? No, it's not.
- 5:30If your emotions are telling you that it's overwhelming, that
- 5:33you're hot, you're tired. Because that's what I was
- 5:35feeling when I was going through this.
- 5:36I wanted to just say screw it and go in the house and not do
- 5:39it. But I had to dig for resilience
- 5:41and just say, Nope, I'm doing this.
- 5:43I'm going to suck it up and I'm going to do this.
- 5:46And I have to tell you, it took me longer than normal because I
- 5:49had to keep stopping and sitting in the shade because it was so
- 5:53hot. And I ended up making it and
- 5:56getting it done, of course, and I felt fantastic mentally when
- 6:00it was done and physically completely overwhelmed, needing
- 6:03a shower, needing to make a protein shake.
- 6:06I was AI was a mess, but I felt good mentally.
- 6:10And the reason I'm sharing this all with you is because I don't
- 6:14want you to think that just the big things are where you have to
- 6:16be resilient. We have to be resilient every
- 6:19day in all types of little situations.
- 6:22We just have to find a way to be resilient.
- 6:24And the more we do that, the better off we are as people
- 6:28because and we bounce back quicker.
- 6:30So look for that spot. And yes, finally the water is
- 6:34receding. Finally, we are getting dried
- 6:36out. And I'm very grateful for that.
- 6:39Very, very grateful. So go find your resilient path
- 6:43and remember, no matter how small it is, it's required.
- 6:46All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I'll
- 6:49see you tomorrow. Bye.
