- 3:23Speaker 5: We're working a day watch out a juvenile bureau. My
- 3:26Speaker 5: partner's Ben Romero. The boss is Inspector Bowling. My name
- 3:29Speaker 5: is Friday. Was nine thirty five am when we got
- 3:32Speaker 5: to thirteen thirty five Georgia Street Captain's office.
- 3:37Speaker 2: We'll ask you to sa down. We're not going to
- 3:38Speaker 2: be here that long.
- 3:39Speaker 6: You sound man.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Get your hats right, will you? Where's the car right
- 3:47Speaker 2: out front? All right?
- 3:49Speaker 6: What's up?
- 3:50Speaker 2: A rotten mess?
- 3:58Speaker 5: We got in the car and drove south on figure order.
- 4:00Speaker 5: We got to West one hundred and third Street. According
- 4:03Speaker 5: to Inspector Bowling's directions, we turned right and went about
- 4:06Speaker 5: four miles. He directed this to pull up in front
- 4:08Speaker 5: of a one story frame residence that had been converted
- 4:11Speaker 5: into small business offices. On the right side going in
- 4:14Speaker 5: was a neighborhood jewelers shop. We could see him working
- 4:16Speaker 5: in the window. Over the door of the office. On
- 4:19Speaker 5: the left was a lawyer Shingle. The gold lettering was new.
- 4:24Speaker 2: That's just why oh your belt? That's right. Name's Paul Wilson.
- 4:30Speaker 2: It's me, miss Wilson. Oh, come in, inspect you vote
- 4:32Speaker 2: him mister.
- 4:33Speaker 7: Wilson is the Sergeant Friday Romeo juvenal detail. I'm a
- 4:37Speaker 7: signing him with this case. All right, look at it?
- 4:40Speaker 2: Just look at it. Look at that, Joe.
- 4:44Speaker 8: Yeah, paint all over everything into that leather chairs, ruined,
- 4:50Speaker 8: the desk smeared with a stiff green paint.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Looks like they threw it on the moped and rug
- 4:57Speaker 2: soaked with it. The walls. You know, they even got
- 5:02Speaker 2: the clock. Yeah, take a good look. Remember it when
- 5:05Speaker 2: you're tag whoever did it?
- 5:09Speaker 6: Need your lawbooks, mister Wilson. Yes, I didn't have to
- 5:13Speaker 6: do this Ford paint all over, Yes, sir, whend always happened.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Sometime last night. Found it this way when I came
- 5:21Speaker 2: in this morning. Any idea who did it? That's why
- 5:24Speaker 2: I called us, and we're gonna find out. I don't
- 5:26Speaker 2: know who'd want to do a thing like this. Just
- 5:29Speaker 2: open my office three days ago. It just hung out
- 5:31Speaker 2: My shame.
- 5:31Speaker 9: You just started practicing laws then, Yes, sir, graduated from
- 5:35Speaker 9: Loyal University Extension Division looking for office.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Space for a long time. Was there anything taken? No,
- 5:41Speaker 2: that's such a dirty, rotten thing or po undoubtedly a kid.
- 5:44Speaker 6: It's pretty vicious for a kid. Can you think of
- 5:46Speaker 6: any enemies that you might have had?
- 5:48Speaker 2: This was no, sir, No one do a thing like this.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Can't understand that. There's no reason for it that I
- 5:53Speaker 2: can think of. Primary report shows that got in the
- 5:56Speaker 2: back door. Is that right? Mick Twilson, Can you come
- 5:58Speaker 2: back here? I'll show you, man. Yeah, here it is
- 6:04Speaker 2: right here. See this used to be the kitchen when
- 6:07Speaker 2: this was her flat. I was gonna put a hot
- 6:09Speaker 2: plate in here for coffee. Nice. You can see where
- 6:12Speaker 2: they cut through the screen door. It's all I it's
- 6:15Speaker 2: been checked. Okay, Oh yeah, yeah, I.
- 6:19Speaker 6: See h any pass kid fit the inside door here? Y, Yes,
- 6:24Speaker 6: that's right.
- 6:24Speaker 2: You can pullow the trailer that green paint right from
- 6:26Speaker 2: this door all the way through the house. Yeah. I
- 6:29Speaker 2: don't know how I'll ever get it all off. You
- 6:30Speaker 2: know of any cleaners would handle things like this. We're
- 6:33Speaker 2: not allowed to recommend.
- 6:33Speaker 8: Anybody missed to Wilson could have somebody in mine would
- 6:36Speaker 8: be happy to call them for you.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Thank you. I appreciate it. I was gonna make some calls,
- 6:40Speaker 2: but I haven't got my phone installed yet. That's the
- 6:42Speaker 2: matter of damage. About eighteen hundred dollars. That's right, that's
- 6:44Speaker 2: what I figure.
- 6:45Speaker 9: Guess my law books are over six hundred dollars alone.
- 6:48Speaker 9: Borrowed the money from the bank for the furniture.
- 6:51Speaker 5: You haven't noticed any kids in the neighborhood, and none
- 6:53Speaker 5: of them around while you were moving in.
- 6:54Speaker 9: No, I didn't see anything. I moved everything in myself,
- 6:57Speaker 9: runder the trailer, made several trips together.
- 6:59Speaker 2: All over here. Yess, that was a silly thing to do. Why,
- 7:03Speaker 2: well a story.
- 7:04Speaker 9: I bought the furniture, said they'd deliver it. I couldn't
- 7:07Speaker 9: wait to see everything in first office.
- 7:10Speaker 6: You know, yeah, we understand.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Well.
- 7:12Speaker 9: Like I said, I made several trips with the trailer,
- 7:14Speaker 9: and I didn't lock the office each time I left.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Didn't figure it was necessary. It fell across the hall
- 7:19Speaker 2: of jeweler said he keep an eye on things for me.
- 7:21Speaker 6: But you did lock up last night?
- 7:22Speaker 2: To you?
- 7:23Speaker 9: Ohy as soon as I was moved in, I locked
- 7:24Speaker 9: the place at all times when it wasn't here.
- 7:28Speaker 2: That's it, I'll get right on it. I don't have
- 7:30Speaker 2: to tell you again. I want a fast answer. Where
- 7:31Speaker 2: do we start? With an empty pip can?
- 7:37Speaker 5: Before we left at Turning Paul Wilson, we took a
- 7:39Speaker 5: sample scraping of the green paint to serve as a
- 7:41Speaker 5: color check.
- 7:42Speaker 6: We started to canvas the neighborhood door to door.
- 7:45Speaker 5: We covered the area for a radius of six blocks,
- 7:47Speaker 5: questioning the residents and checking out the youngsters. We failed
- 7:50Speaker 5: to come up with anything. We figured another good angle
- 7:53Speaker 5: was to try the schools in the area. We checked
- 7:55Speaker 5: on the students who had been in any kind of
- 7:57Speaker 5: trouble involving malicious pranks.
- 7:59Speaker 6: We had the principal line their students up. We looked
- 8:01Speaker 6: them all over thoroughly.
- 8:02Speaker 5: For any evidences of paint of any kind on their
- 8:05Speaker 5: person or on their clothing. The few leads we found
- 8:07Speaker 5: led nowhere. After a week without success, we went back
- 8:11Speaker 5: and rechecked the neighborhood the paint stores to see if
- 8:13Speaker 5: anyone had bought any green paint anyone they might have
- 8:15Speaker 5: forgotten to tell us about the first time through no leads. Monday,
- 8:19Speaker 5: April eighteenth, been a nice stop for.
- 8:21Speaker 6: A coke at a hot dog stand in the corner
- 8:22Speaker 6: of one hundred.
- 8:23Speaker 2: And third Note few haven'tue a couple of coke? Please?
- 8:27Speaker 2: Do you want to help sells in? Yeah?
- 8:28Speaker 8: Okay, here's one I don't see anymore. There's one land
- 8:36Speaker 8: on the side. No, no over there but the grape.
- 8:39Speaker 8: Oh yeah, I mean get it for it.
- 8:47Speaker 10: Here.
- 8:47Speaker 2: You are good every time I think of that. Boys, oh,
- 9:00Speaker 2: it makes me sick. Yeah.
- 9:03Speaker 8: If we could, if we could just get some kind
- 9:05Speaker 8: of a leading anything for a start, pardon me, I'd
- 9:13Speaker 8: be satisfied.
- 9:15Speaker 6: There's nothing to work on us like stabbing in the dark.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Joe. Yeah.
- 9:21Speaker 8: Look down the street there, m this is ten canneday,
- 9:25Speaker 8: everybody's got them set out in front of the houses.
- 9:27Speaker 6: That's worth a trying it.
- 9:28Speaker 8: Let's try a place across the street and then work
- 9:31Speaker 8: down the block, all right. I had a cousin moved
- 9:37Speaker 8: down from San Francisco. It took him almost a year
- 9:39Speaker 8: to get used to this ten kansa system here in La.
- 9:41Speaker 2: That's so yeah. Up there, they throw everything into one
- 9:44Speaker 2: garbage can. Ten cans.
- 9:45Speaker 8: No, well I didn't know left yah, sure, tads. My
- 9:48Speaker 8: cousin never could get used to putting the cans out.
- 9:51Speaker 8: The backyard was full up, and for his wife reminded
- 9:53Speaker 8: and butt him out. Garbage kind of piled up to
- 9:57Speaker 8: they wouldn't pick it up with the ten cans in it.
- 9:59Speaker 6: Uh, I won't check these here I get that.
- 10:07Speaker 2: I don't see any paint can none here either? How
- 10:13Speaker 2: about those down there? No camp? Or get this box? Wonderfish?
- 10:26Speaker 2: Is any good? I'll say, Prune Jude. See a lot
- 10:30Speaker 2: of empty bottles? Any paint cans? That's so.
- 10:39Speaker 6: That's the way it went. Block after the block, house
- 10:42Speaker 6: after house.
- 10:43Speaker 5: We covered five blocks, checking the containers full of empty
- 10:45Speaker 5: tin cans. Found a few paint cans, none of them
- 10:48Speaker 5: the right color or any combinations that would go together
- 10:51Speaker 5: to make.
- 10:52Speaker 6: The right color. It was a tiring job, but we
- 10:55Speaker 6: figured it was at least a place to start.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Show a lot of cans here. There must be a
- 10:59Speaker 2: new bride.
- 11:00Speaker 6: I don't know anything that's here. How about this?
- 11:06Speaker 2: Huh? This was one gallon can bring? Must ask? Yes,
- 11:24Speaker 2: police officers, ma'am, this empty paint can belong to you.
- 11:27Speaker 10: You can have it if you want.
- 11:28Speaker 11: We threw it out.
- 11:29Speaker 6: Do you have any children here, ma'am?
- 11:32Speaker 10: Here's the boy?
- 11:33Speaker 2: How is he?
- 11:34Speaker 10: One year?
- 11:35Speaker 2: Would you mind telling us what this paint was used for?
- 11:38Speaker 10: We just moved here. Is there any law but throwing
- 11:40Speaker 10: out paintings?
- 11:41Speaker 2: Oh no, man, we're investigating a case. Just like to
- 11:43Speaker 2: know what the paint was used for.
- 11:45Speaker 10: Did old man Boone send you over? Mister Boone the
- 11:49Speaker 10: man with ready from no ma'am, so maybe it was him.
- 11:54Speaker 10: He said, we couldn't do any painting.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Inside and we don't know anything about that.
- 11:57Speaker 10: You sure I don't trust him?
- 12:00Speaker 2: No man, he said, the paint we used to redecorate.
- 12:03Speaker 10: He's coming a shot.
- 12:11Speaker 12: In here.
- 12:15Speaker 10: See yeah, Carlos, see my husband and told him I
- 12:20Speaker 10: should have waited to Sunday.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Whose idea was it to paint a bad Carlos.
- 12:27Speaker 10: It's going to night school learning English. The teacher told
- 12:30Speaker 10: him the best way to learn was to speaking around
- 12:32Speaker 10: the house. Yes, it's better for the little one too.
- 12:35Speaker 12: Well.
- 12:35Speaker 10: Anyway, Carlos is paid on Saturday night. Then he stops
- 12:39Speaker 10: at the little place where the fellasy works. Well, has
- 12:41Speaker 10: a little drink. He gets his cash there. When he
- 12:46Speaker 10: came home, he said he was going to paint the
- 12:48Speaker 10: bathroom for me.
- 12:50Speaker 13: This is a little girl.
- 12:52Speaker 10: I was in the kitchen and I yelled him to
- 12:54Speaker 10: paint around the top, around the top. I said, like
- 12:58Speaker 10: I said, it doesn't know English too good yet we
- 13:03Speaker 10: have a green top.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I see, well, thank you.
- 13:07Speaker 10: He's going to clean the top next Saturday. Here's the shower.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Painted that too, didn't he Well, thank you very much.
- 13:17Speaker 6: Man, I'm sorry to disturbed you.
- 13:18Speaker 10: That's all right. I'm worried about next Saturday night. He's
- 13:23Speaker 10: not telling what he's going to do with that pantry movement.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Four point thirty pm, we were no closer to finding
- 13:34Speaker 5: out who spread that paint around attorney the attorney's office
- 13:36Speaker 5: than when we started.
- 13:38Speaker 6: We continued checking the neighborhood, but we found nothing.
- 13:40Speaker 5: A few minutes before five, we got a call to
- 13:42Speaker 5: check back in with Inspector Bowling.
- 13:45Speaker 2: You doing a good out there. Nothing until we had
- 13:48Speaker 2: a little action. A new one.
- 13:49Speaker 7: You know what's that came in about an hour ago.
- 13:51Speaker 7: Somebody poured kerosene on three palm trees and set them
- 13:53Speaker 7: on fire. Three trees, three different blocks. Man kept the
- 13:56Speaker 7: fire department busy, tied up the traffic for several hours.
- 13:59Speaker 7: I sent a dish no juvenile cars out there to cover.
- 14:01Speaker 7: Happened in the same general area as the paint. Now,
- 14:05Speaker 7: anyone who will smear paint over an office might set
- 14:07Speaker 7: a palm tree on fire.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Same type of gag malicious mischief. I think there's a
- 14:10Speaker 2: connection between the two wants.
- 14:12Speaker 7: Anybody's guests paint routine is a new one, says the
- 14:14Speaker 7: palm trees. They're both one time only shots. Maybe the
- 14:17Speaker 7: two connects somewhere along the line.
- 14:19Speaker 6: Maybe one's got to stop. We can't even find a
- 14:20Speaker 6: place to begin.
- 14:21Speaker 2: We've tried everything we know, starting again to more. It
- 14:24Speaker 2: isn't going to make that young lawyer for you anybody? Yeah,
- 14:29Speaker 2: who are you're taking down to the attention room? He
- 14:35Speaker 2: does huh, all right, I'll see him. Yeah right now.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Sixteen year old boy out there says he's got to
- 14:42Speaker 2: see me.
- 14:42Speaker 6: He's like to talk to him alone.
- 14:43Speaker 2: No, that's right, Tuesday, come in.
- 14:48Speaker 13: You're the chief.
- 14:49Speaker 2: My name is Bowling Juvenile Bureau. Yeah, could I talk
- 14:52Speaker 2: to you alone?
- 14:53Speaker 7: Well, these officers work with me, and you're talk in
- 14:55Speaker 7: front of them, So I guess, sir, come on over here.
- 15:02Speaker 2: I want to say, Hanstan, I'd rather stand if it's okay,
- 15:05Speaker 2: all right? What's on your mind? I want to confess
- 15:08Speaker 2: what do you want to confess? Him?
- 15:10Speaker 13: I murdered somebody.
- 15:22Speaker 3: You are listening to dragnet. Actual case history is taken
- 15:26Speaker 3: from official police files.
- 15:31Speaker 5: Six pm, Monday, April eighteenth, The boy, identified himself as
- 15:35Speaker 5: Arnold Waterman, gave his ages sixteen.
- 15:37Speaker 6: He told us that two days before, at ninety eighth
- 15:39Speaker 6: Street and.
- 15:39Speaker 5: Second Avenue, he had shot a man to death and
- 15:41Speaker 5: hidden his body in the basement of a house. He
- 15:44Speaker 5: was taken the interrogation room, where a police donugrapher took
- 15:46Speaker 5: his statement. Specter Bowling sent Ben and I out to
- 15:49Speaker 5: check his story. Nine to thirty pm. We drove back
- 15:51Speaker 5: to Georgia Street juvel and went to the interrogation room.
- 15:55Speaker 7: Arnold, Yes, sir, these two men have been out at
- 15:57Speaker 7: ninety eighth Street and Second Avenue checking your story.
- 16:00Speaker 13: Do you find a body?
- 16:00Speaker 6: Well, there's nobody out there.
- 16:02Speaker 2: There should be.
- 16:02Speaker 13: I put it in the cellar.
- 16:03Speaker 5: There's no house out there, it's a vacant lot. We
- 16:05Speaker 5: checked all the houses near there. You sure you'd kill somebody, of.
- 16:08Speaker 13: Course, I'm sure. I stole a gun. I shot him
- 16:11Speaker 13: three times in the back.
- 16:12Speaker 2: What'd you do with a gun?
- 16:13Speaker 14: I threw it in west Lake Park where in the
- 16:15Speaker 14: war I ranted a boat and rowed out to the middle.
- 16:18Speaker 14: That's where I threw it in.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Why did you kill the man? I don't know. I
- 16:21Speaker 2: didn't like it.
- 16:22Speaker 5: Look, boy, you didn't kill anybody. There's nothing to back
- 16:24Speaker 5: up your story. There's not an ounce of truth in it.
- 16:26Speaker 13: How do you know you haven't found a body? Just wait,
- 16:29Speaker 13: you'll find and then you'll see I killed him?
- 16:31Speaker 10: More?
- 16:31Speaker 2: Will you show it's where you hit the body?
- 16:34Speaker 13: Why should I? I told you you can find it.
- 16:36Speaker 2: These men have gone over that entire area thoroughly. There's
- 16:38Speaker 2: nobody out there, and you know it.
- 16:41Speaker 14: You cops are funny. When somebody won't admit a murder,
- 16:44Speaker 14: you keep asking questions until they do. I'm telling you
- 16:46Speaker 14: I murdered somebody, and you keep trying to talk me
- 16:48Speaker 14: out of it.
- 16:48Speaker 5: If we can find one's shred of proof, who might
- 16:50Speaker 5: go along with you? You can't be convicted with that proof.
- 16:52Speaker 2: How much do you need? You got my confession. I
- 16:54Speaker 2: offered a sign it, they.
- 16:55Speaker 13: Wouldn't let me.
- 16:55Speaker 2: What more you need?
- 16:56Speaker 6: You need a victim on them?
- 16:58Speaker 13: You knew where to look, you could find it.
- 17:00Speaker 2: We've looked every place you told us till you lying
- 17:02Speaker 2: to us.
- 17:02Speaker 6: Son?
- 17:03Speaker 13: Why I never liked the old man. I hated his wife.
- 17:08Speaker 13: I killed her too. I wasn't going to tell you that.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Where do you go to school?
- 17:12Speaker 13: I quit school to sell papers. I had to support
- 17:14Speaker 13: my mother.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Where's your father. I don't know.
- 17:16Speaker 14: My mother wouldn't tell me. That's where I'm at. The
- 17:19Speaker 14: old man I killed selling papers.
- 17:21Speaker 2: He was my boss.
- 17:22Speaker 13: None of us liked and nobody had the nerve to
- 17:24Speaker 13: do it but me. The rest of the guys were scared,
- 17:27Speaker 13: but not me.
- 17:27Speaker 6: That was the old man's name.
- 17:29Speaker 2: I can't think of it right now. He was your boss.
- 17:31Speaker 2: He never told us his name. We just worked for him.
- 17:33Speaker 2: What'd you sell papers?
- 17:35Speaker 14: I don't remember. I had to sell papers. We were
- 17:38Speaker 14: going hungry. I couldn't stand seeing my mother. Stars couldn't
- 17:41Speaker 14: your father were I don't know where he is. I
- 17:43Speaker 14: told you that we tried to get on a relief.
- 17:45Speaker 14: It wouldn't let us. I mean a lot of money
- 17:48Speaker 14: selling papers. After a while we didn't need relief anymore.
- 17:51Speaker 14: Made one hundred dollars a week.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Why are you lying to her? Son?
- 17:53Speaker 13: Do you think I'm lying? Why don't you let me
- 17:55Speaker 13: go home?
- 17:55Speaker 2: We have anything to hold you for.
- 17:56Speaker 13: You can go home, not until I have a trial.
- 17:59Speaker 13: Already called lawyer.
- 18:00Speaker 2: He'll be over pretty soon. I'm sent for your mother, Arnold,
- 18:02Speaker 2: she'll come down and take you home.
- 18:05Speaker 14: I didn't want her to know anything about this. I
- 18:07Speaker 14: mean you have to go to the gas chamber. That
- 18:09Speaker 14: would make her feel bad. You shouldn't have called her.
- 18:12Speaker 6: It's no use.
- 18:13Speaker 7: Let's go back to the office. His mother ought to
- 18:14Speaker 7: be there by now, all right, merriw you want to
- 18:16Speaker 7: stay with the boy?
- 18:17Speaker 13: All right, you better go out and find that body.
- 18:19Speaker 13: On Joe, I kill that old man. You can't, Shay,
- 18:22Speaker 13: I didn't.
- 18:25Speaker 5: The boy's a pathological liar and it looks that way,
- 18:27Speaker 5: probably an inferiorady complex.
- 18:29Speaker 2: And this is the way of making himself important.
- 18:30Speaker 6: But we all know he didn't kill anybody. But I
- 18:32Speaker 6: wonder if he'd got something else in his mind.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Now, how do you do here? Missus? Waterman?
- 18:39Speaker 12: Yes, inspected bowling.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Yes, ma'am. This is Sergeant Friday.
- 18:42Speaker 6: How do you do man?
- 18:42Speaker 12: How do you do? I have to excuse my appearance
- 18:45Speaker 12: that slept a little late today.
- 18:47Speaker 2: We've got your boy down the hall. He's all right,
- 18:49Speaker 2: trying to get us to swallow a few tall stories.
- 18:51Speaker 12: Yeah, he's like that.
- 18:53Speaker 6: What do you tell you he'll try to give us
- 18:54Speaker 6: a story about killing somebody.
- 18:56Speaker 12: Well, I'm not surprised. This isn't the first time. Never
- 19:00Speaker 12: understand that kid.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Has your boy ever been in an institution.
- 19:03Speaker 12: Missus water No, he's not bad. He just likes to
- 19:06Speaker 12: lie all the time. It's an awful liar. Went to
- 19:09Speaker 12: his high school principal the other day, told him his
- 19:11Speaker 12: father and I beat him and we wouldn't give him
- 19:13Speaker 12: any lunch money.
- 19:13Speaker 6: Where is your hus He has.
- 19:15Speaker 12: A newspaper concession when the railroad trains. How often is
- 19:17Speaker 12: he holl Once a week, sometimes every two weeks. It's
- 19:21Speaker 12: the only business he knows. Maybe that's the reason the
- 19:25Speaker 12: kid's away is. My mother always used to tell me
- 19:28Speaker 12: a kid needs his father, so whenever my hobby's home,
- 19:31Speaker 12: he always does the right thing. Anill started telling him
- 19:34Speaker 12: these lies a long time ago, and ever since his
- 19:37Speaker 12: father found out, he catches it good strapping, that's all
- 19:42Speaker 12: a kid like him understands. His father knows how to
- 19:45Speaker 12: handle him. Every lies he takes a strap to him.
- 19:47Speaker 2: You think that's the.
- 19:48Speaker 13: Best way to handle him, don't you.
- 19:50Speaker 7: Well you know what you're doing, mister Waterman. He's your son.
- 19:53Speaker 7: But if you wouldn't mind a little advice, do you
- 19:55Speaker 7: mind my telling you no, no at all? Well, that
- 19:57Speaker 7: boy needs care, and he needs it bad. That's not
- 20:00Speaker 7: the answer and needs attention. Good supervision and a lot
- 20:02Speaker 7: of companionship. I'm not conducting a class in child psychology,
- 20:06Speaker 7: but care for that boy of yours. Care for him
- 20:08Speaker 7: before the state has to.
- 20:09Speaker 12: It was just those stories, it is, That's what's wrong
- 20:12Speaker 12: with them. Kim on the other night, with a waterless
- 20:14Speaker 12: tail I ever heard, said he through green paint all
- 20:17Speaker 12: over somebody's office.
- 20:21Speaker 5: Ben and I drove out to the Waterman home. We
- 20:23Speaker 5: checked through the boys belongings. His mother showed us his room.
- 20:26Speaker 5: In his closet we found a pair of corduroy trousers,
- 20:28Speaker 5: a white T shirt, and other articles of his clothing
- 20:30Speaker 5: spattered with the same shade of green paint that had
- 20:32Speaker 5: been found in the office and furnishings of Attorney Paul Wilson.
- 20:36Speaker 5: We asked him, as Waterman where son Arnold was on
- 20:38Speaker 5: Sunday night, April ninth, the night that the office had
- 20:41Speaker 5: been broken into and smeared with paint. She told us
- 20:43Speaker 5: she didn't know, but that he came home that night
- 20:46Speaker 5: with paint on his clothing. Ben and I went back
- 20:48Speaker 5: to the office, where we filed an application for a
- 20:50Speaker 5: petition and detention Section seven hundred SUBMWIC malicious mischief, one
- 20:55Speaker 5: count two days later in juvenile court, the calendar was called.
- 20:58Speaker 6: Arnold Waterman's name was on the list.
- 21:01Speaker 5: The judge, the subject, and all those concerned in the
- 21:03Speaker 5: case retired to the judge's private chambers, Ben.
- 21:05Speaker 6: And I, Ronold Waterman and his mother.
- 21:07Speaker 5: The subject was informed of his constitutional rights, and Judge
- 21:10Speaker 5: Frank J.
- 21:10Speaker 6: Smith read the findings of our investigations.
- 21:14Speaker 15: I don't and the llegers in this petition.
- 21:16Speaker 11: At on April ninth, at the approximately eight thirty PM,
- 21:18Speaker 11: you enter the office of Attorney Paul Wilson at ninety
- 21:21Speaker 11: two eighteen West one hundred and third Street, where you willfully,
- 21:24Speaker 11: and without mister Wilson's permission, did maliciously damage his office
- 21:27Speaker 11: to the extent of approximately eighteen hundred dollars by pouring
- 21:31Speaker 11: paint over his rugs, finiture, books, and other articles in
- 21:33Speaker 11: his icies.
- 21:35Speaker 15: Is this too, Ronold?
- 21:36Speaker 2: Yes, sir?
- 21:36Speaker 15: Did you know mister Wilson?
- 21:38Speaker 2: No, I don't.
- 21:39Speaker 15: I'd like to know why you did that. I felt
- 21:42Speaker 15: like it. You have to give me a better answer
- 21:43Speaker 15: than that, jun Stay.
- 21:45Speaker 13: That's the best I can do. That's good enough, isn't it?
- 21:47Speaker 11: No, it isn't good enough. We have a court room
- 21:49Speaker 11: full of boys outside who probably want to be helped,
- 21:52Speaker 11: and we're going to try to help them. We can't
- 21:54Speaker 11: help you unless you want to be helped.
- 21:56Speaker 13: You don't want to help me. You don't believe anything
- 21:58Speaker 13: I tell you.
- 22:00Speaker 11: Surprising, Yes, you and officer of a Merrow investigated this
- 22:04Speaker 11: case from its inception we did.
- 22:06Speaker 15: As a result of your investigation. What's your opinion of
- 22:08Speaker 15: this boy's.
- 22:09Speaker 5: Truthfully, well, you're I think I can speak for officers
- 22:12Speaker 5: of a Marrow here as well, in all our talks
- 22:15Speaker 5: with the boy and our observations of them, it's our
- 22:17Speaker 5: opinion for what it's worth. The boy's a pathological liar,
- 22:21Speaker 5: basically seems to have the makings of a good youngster.
- 22:24Speaker 5: His environment's bad, seems to have very little, if any,
- 22:27Speaker 5: parental guidance. Tells lies your honor, lots of them.
- 22:31Speaker 15: That seems to be everyone's opinion, it's not mine.
- 22:34Speaker 14: If you'd spend more time trying to find out if
- 22:36Speaker 14: I'm a lion instead of trying to put me on
- 22:38Speaker 14: the spot, you earn your money.
- 22:39Speaker 11: Your stories have been thoroughly investigated and double checked by
- 22:42Speaker 11: competent police officers. There is absolutely no basis of truth
- 22:45Speaker 11: in anything you've said, I'm going.
- 22:47Speaker 13: To a second ton of everybody calling me a liar.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Do you hear me?
- 22:51Speaker 15: Young man?
- 22:53Speaker 11: Sit down in that chair. We review a great many
- 22:58Speaker 11: juvenile cases here in my private chambers.
- 23:01Speaker 15: But that does not all of the fact that you
- 23:03Speaker 15: are in the court of law.
- 23:05Speaker 11: You will lower your voice, speak in a gentlemanly fashion
- 23:08Speaker 11: and tell the truth. Is that understood? Yes, sir missus Waterman.
- 23:14Speaker 11: Could you give this court any reason for your son's behavior.
- 23:18Speaker 12: It's a mystery to me, Judge Fred that's his father.
- 23:21Speaker 12: He can't understand it either. He's always lied. Father beats
- 23:25Speaker 12: him for it. I guess he'll always lie.
- 23:27Speaker 2: That's all you can say, and.
- 23:28Speaker 12: Your son's behal What else is it to say he's
- 23:30Speaker 12: a liar?
- 23:31Speaker 11: I'm going to ask you once more, why did you
- 23:34Speaker 11: smear paint all over at Tourney Paul Wilson's office.
- 23:36Speaker 15: I didn't like him? Why didn't you like him?
- 23:38Speaker 13: I didn't like him?
- 23:39Speaker 2: That's all Charles any funny with him?
- 23:41Speaker 6: Guy?
- 23:41Speaker 15: You mean you destroyed his property because you didn't like
- 23:43Speaker 15: his looks?
- 23:44Speaker 2: Something like that.
- 23:45Speaker 13: He was cheap. I saw him moving in.
- 23:47Speaker 2: He had a trailer.
- 23:48Speaker 13: He was moving his own stuff in Why didn't they
- 23:50Speaker 13: hire a mover like everybody else.
- 23:52Speaker 2: I don't like cheap people.
- 23:53Speaker 15: Do you know anything about this man? Wasn't no business?
- 23:57Speaker 15: Was it of yours?
- 23:58Speaker 11: Whether or not mister Wilson decided to move his own furnitures.
- 24:01Speaker 11: Do you know that he's a young man, not much
- 24:03Speaker 11: older than you, just graduated from law school, took a
- 24:05Speaker 11: lot of time, took a lot of his money, money
- 24:07Speaker 11: that he earned to put himself through school.
- 24:09Speaker 15: And you would sit there and mere sketch a.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Boy passing judgment on a fine young man like Paul.
- 24:13Speaker 15: Isn't boy? Let me tell you something.
- 24:16Speaker 11: I don't know if you're a god fearing lad or not,
- 24:18Speaker 11: but you'd better fall on your knees and ask forgiveness
- 24:21Speaker 11: and hope that somebody hears you that he hasn't lost
- 24:23Speaker 11: patience with you. You better raise up those sights of yours, lad,
- 24:27Speaker 11: and pray for forgiveness. I hope those tears mean something
- 24:33Speaker 11: out now. Do you have anything to say before I
- 24:36Speaker 11: passed judgment in this case, Yes.
- 24:39Speaker 13: Sir, I have.
- 24:41Speaker 14: I'd like to tell you about something else I did.
- 24:44Speaker 14: There were some palm trees out there. I put kerosene
- 24:47Speaker 14: on him and set him on fire.
- 24:48Speaker 15: Oh it's Friday. Would you know anything about this?
- 24:51Speaker 6: Yes, sure, honor. That checks with the reports.
- 24:53Speaker 15: Any property damage?
- 24:54Speaker 2: No, yeah, kept the Friday department pretty busy about all.
- 24:57Speaker 13: I didn't kill anybody.
- 24:58Speaker 2: I just made that up.
- 24:59Speaker 10: Yes.
- 25:01Speaker 15: Do you have anything else to add?
- 25:03Speaker 12: This is what No. I don't know what else you
- 25:05Speaker 12: can do with a kid goud to somebody else's problem.
- 25:08Speaker 11: According to the findings of the probationary officers and the
- 25:11Speaker 11: investigating officers, and what I've heard and observed in these chambers,
- 25:14Speaker 11: I have no alternative but to remove this boy from
- 25:17Speaker 11: his present home and environment and place him in a
- 25:19Speaker 11: foster home where he will receive closer supervision in the
- 25:22Speaker 11: care that he requires.
- 25:24Speaker 15: Does that meet with your approval? Missus woman?
- 25:26Speaker 12: It's fine with me. Judge Tred and I can hardly
- 25:29Speaker 12: make ends meet now, and it's a shame to waste
- 25:31Speaker 12: what money we have on this kid. So I can
- 25:34Speaker 12: do to squeeze off a new clothes I need, and
- 25:36Speaker 12: you approve this player, you can't wait to tell Fred.
- 25:39Speaker 11: Well, when you tell Fred, you can also tell him
- 25:42Speaker 11: the taxpayers are not going to assume the burden of
- 25:44Speaker 11: the mistakes that you and your husband lavished on this boy.
- 25:48Speaker 15: What do you mean, Judge expensive?
- 25:49Speaker 11: Placing the boy in this foster home comes to the
- 25:52Speaker 11: amount of thirty five dollars a month. You and your
- 25:54Speaker 11: husband will pay this sum. The law covers that it's
- 25:57Speaker 11: an a a lot of money. The payment will be
- 25:59Speaker 11: due the first day of each month. You will meet
- 26:02Speaker 11: this requirement. I'll be held in contempt at court. I'm
- 26:05Speaker 11: only sorry. That's as far as the law goes. The
- 26:08Speaker 11: laws of the State of California do not make the
- 26:10Speaker 11: parents responsible for the thoughts of their children unless contributory
- 26:14Speaker 11: negligence can be proven. My eyes, it is contributory negligence
- 26:18Speaker 11: on your part not Unfortunately, it cannot be proven. Any
- 26:23Speaker 11: false that this boy may have are yours? You as
- 26:26Speaker 11: a parent irresponsible.
- 26:28Speaker 12: We did the best. We couldn't raising the kid.
- 26:30Speaker 15: Madame, you didn't raise him.
- 26:31Speaker 4: Hearing the Smith, the story you have just heard was true,
- 26:42Speaker 4: only the names were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:45Speaker 3: On April eighteenth, the hearing was held in the private
- 26:47Speaker 3: chambers of Judge Frank J. Smith, Juvenile Court, City and

- 26:53Speaker 3: heard the results of that hearing.

- 28:46Speaker 16: the great detectives of old time radio with Adam Graham
- 28:49Speaker 16: and now let's get back into the show.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, there are some empis of Dragnet that
- 29:01Speaker 1: really feel like the issues in stories being addressed could
- 29:06Speaker 1: happen today. This one feels a bit more distant, particularly
- 29:10Speaker 1: the police reaction at the beginning from the captain and
- 29:13Speaker 1: how infuriated it is. You'd expect that we're going to
- 29:18Speaker 1: be dealing with some sort of kidnapping, murder or some
- 29:21Speaker 1: shocking crime, and instead we're dealing with vandalism. It's, let's
- 29:26Speaker 1: be clear, a very damaging act and truly unkind to
- 29:31Speaker 1: this young lawyer, but it's hard to imagine that level
- 29:36Speaker 1: of outrage being portrayed against the backdrop of more serious crimes. However,
- 29:42Speaker 1: I do think that the story does illustrate one of
- 29:46Speaker 1: the key points I've raised about Dragnet in the past.
- 29:49Speaker 1: People have this notion with Dragnet that it was a
- 29:54Speaker 1: show that really just got down on the younger generation.
- 29:57Speaker 1: The idea with Dragnet was that parents had a solemn responsibility,
- 30:04Speaker 1: and throughout Dragging that more than any complaints about those
- 30:08Speaker 1: darn kids, you're going to see a very strong thing
- 30:12Speaker 1: of parents who don't parent, who are abusive in their parenting,
- 30:16Speaker 1: or just neglectful. And this episode really does fit into
- 30:20Speaker 1: that theme, as the judge is blunt, honest and totally
- 30:25Speaker 1: politically incorrect by our standards. All right, well, that will
- 30:30Speaker 1: actually do it for today. Remember our listener support campaign continues.
