- 0:48She's a happy girl She's a happy girl,
- 1:02In this episode of the Woman at the Well Ministries podcast,
- 1:05join Kim Miller and Erica Close in a conversation as we walk with Jesus.
- 1:11In today's conversation, we continue a series on the book of Proverbs,
- 1:15and in today's podcast, we're discussing the lessons that we've learned from Proverbs chapter 25.
- 1:21Thank you all so much for joining us today. My name's Erica Close,
- 1:25and I am here with Kimberly Miller.
- 1:27Hello, and thank you for joining us as we dive into the truths we find in Proverbs chapter 25.
- 1:34So Proverbs chapter 25 has so many truths and so many verses in it,
- 1:39and we're going to look at some of these, some of the topics that are found
- 1:43in Proverbs chapter 25. We're going to look at verses on the power of our words.
- 1:49We're going to look at some verses on gluttony, on how we're supposed to treat our enemies.
- 1:55There's a lot of verses in here about humility.
- 1:58And then there are a number of verses just about being a good neighbor.
- 2:02So this particular chapter in Proverbs has all of these topics,
- 2:07and it also just has some really special verses in it.
- 2:11So we're excited to dive in. Kim, would you like to read the first half?
- 2:16Sure. These are also Proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah,
- 2:21king of Judah, copied out.
- 2:22It is the glory of God to conceal a thing, but the honor of kings is to search out a matter.
- 2:28The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.
- 2:34Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for
- 2:38the finer. Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne should
- 2:42be established in righteousness.
- 2:44Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men.
- 2:49For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither, than that thou shouldest
- 2:54be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.
- 2:58Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof,
- 3:04when thy neighbor hath put thee to shame.
- 3:06Debate thy cause with thy neighbor himself, and discover not a secret to another,
- 3:11lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thy infamy turn not away.
- 3:16A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold and pictures of silver.
- 3:20As an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an immediate ear.
- 3:27As a cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is faithful messenger to them that send him.
- 3:32For he refresheth the soul of his masters.
- 3:36Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.
- 3:41By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.
- 3:47Hast thou found honey? Eat so much as is sufficient for thee,
- 3:51lest thou be filled their width and vomit it.
- 3:54Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbor's house, lest he be weary of thee and so hate thee.
- 3:59A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor is a maul,
- 4:03and a sword and a sharp arrow.
- 4:05Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth and a foot out of joint.
- 4:11As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre,
- 4:16so is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart.
- 4:19If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink.
- 4:25For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee.
- 4:32The north wind driveth away rain, so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.
- 4:37It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.
- 4:42As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.
- 4:47A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain and a corrupt spring.
- 4:54It is not good to eat much honey, for men to search their own glory is not glory.
- 5:00He that hath no rule over his spirits is like a city that is broken down and without walls.
- 5:05So there are so many topics like we talked about in Proverbs chapter 25,
- 5:10but I think this idea about the power of our words is,
- 5:16is just so very important. And I think we see two verses about this in verses 11 and verse 12.
- 5:24Absolutely. I love verse 11. I know. It was my dad's, one of my dad's favorite verses.
- 5:30If you really just look at what it says, it says, a word fitly spoken is like
- 5:35apples of gold in pictures of silver.
- 5:37And if you think about what he's saying, these apples of gold in this picture of silver.
- 5:45It's something that is shiny. It's something that is bright.
- 5:49It's something that catches your eye. It's something that turns you.
- 5:54Because when you saw that picture, you would surely turn.
- 6:00And a word fitly spoken does all of those things. It brightens their soul.
- 6:04If somebody has just the right word for you, they can lift your spirits.
- 6:09They can change your countenance, and they can transform the direction that
- 6:16your mind, your thoughts, and even your being is going.
- 6:20And so we need to be very cognizant of the fact that our words can change people's minds. Absolutely.
- 6:30As we continue through looking at verse 12, that says, as an earring of gold
- 6:38and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.
- 6:44So you adorn the ear with good things with this pretty gold shiny earring.
- 6:50And the right words, the comforting words, the maybe sometimes even challenging
- 6:58words, but the words that give us that corrective moment and we're like,
- 7:01aha, this is really what I should be doing.
- 7:04Those words, That's what he's saying, but the words from a reprover,
- 7:07those words are also making you look better and be better.
- 7:14That idea of that reproof or correction can be beautiful is so...
- 7:20Important. And so often we don't think of reproof when we're getting instruction
- 7:26as always maybe the prettiest times in our lives.
- 7:30It's usually painful. Absolutely.
- 7:32But when we have wise words, wise words to each of us from the right person
- 7:39can be absolutely beautiful.
- 7:42You know, the entire book of Proverbs is really completely filled with wisdom
- 7:47and talking about gaining wisdom and the price is far above rubies.
- 7:52And I believe this is just saying two things to us right here.
- 7:56I think it's saying that a wise person sees the value of instruction and correction and reproof.
- 8:05I also think it's telling us that a wise person who has wisdom will see the
- 8:10benefit of learning how to say the right thing at the right time in the exact right way.
- 8:16And that always involves humbling yourselves unto the Lord and allowing Him
- 8:22to speak through you in the right time and in the right way.
- 8:27I think that's so important because I think so often we may think that we have
- 8:31the right words for a situation.
- 8:34And they may not be bad words, but they may just not be timed right.
- 8:38And so often we have to be, like you said, attuned to what the Holy Spirit is
- 8:44saying so that when we speak, we're speaking at the right time.
- 8:48And you might even have the right words, but you don't have the right relationship
- 8:53for that person to hear what you have to say and for it to not fall on deaf ears.
- 9:00We have to be very prudent with our knowledge and our wisdom.
- 9:04Sometimes our knowledge and our wisdom is for us.
- 9:07Sometimes I do believe he does give us knowledge and wisdom and things to help other people.
- 9:13But not always what we know and what we think we should say are things that
- 9:19are in obedience to what God is saying.
- 9:21He does say, be still and know that I am God. And so we have to discern the
- 9:25Spirit, and the Spirit will make a way for the words that He has given us to
- 9:31fall on fertile ground. Absolutely.
- 9:34Amen. And He will make a way for that person to be able to—they may not like
- 9:39it, but they will hear it.
- 9:42And so I think it's very important. Just because you know something doesn't
- 9:46mean this is the time and the place and the person to tell it.
- 9:50Absolutely. Those are powerful, powerful verses. Again, those were Proverbs 25, 11, and 12.
- 9:57We would invite you to go back and read those again.
- 10:00So one of the other topics that's in Proverbs 25 is just the idea of gluttony.
- 10:08And I don't think any of this is fun to look at and to read about.
- 10:13But there are three verses in here that just really talk about our appetite.
- 10:19And I think it's about our appetite for a whole lot of things.
- 10:23Fleshly things, worldly things, food. Right, not just food. It's in the context of food.
- 10:29But in verse 16, it says,
- 10:40And here, the writer of Proverbs is talking about honey.
- 10:45So finding enough that is sufficient, enough that is satisfying and not to go
- 10:50beyond that, because beyond that, it can just make you sick.
- 10:54And in verse 27, we also read about honey.
- 10:57It is not good to eat much honey, for so men to search their own glory is not glory.
- 11:07Trying to find too much of a good thing, seeking too much of a good thing,
- 11:12eating too much of a good thing is just too much.
- 11:15If you look in Ephesians 5, in verse 18, the latter part of that,
- 11:20he says, and be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but the latter part
- 11:25he says, but be filled with the Spirit.
- 11:28If we're going to err on the side of excess, that's what he's telling us to do.
- 11:35He's telling us to fill yourself with the Holy Spirit.
- 11:38And if you recall in John chapter 4, that is a thirst quencher.
- 11:44The Holy Spirit will satisfy you, and the word of the Lord will satisfy you.
- 11:51But it's a discipline to really fill ourselves with the word and to fill ourselves
- 11:56with the Holy Spirit and to get to know him as a person.
- 12:00But scripture tells us that we're to do all things in moderation.
- 12:03And so that means that even the good things, like, you know,
- 12:08strawberry shortcake or whatever you think is good, mashed potatoes,
- 12:12it's not that you can't have the mashed potatoes or the strawberry shortcake.
- 12:16Is that it can't be where you're going for your joy and your fulfillment,
- 12:20and it can't be done in excess, but it has to be done in moderation.
- 12:28There's another verse, verse 28 says, He that hath no rule over his own spirit
- 12:32is like a city that is broken down and without walls.
- 12:35And when I read that, all I could hear was that when we have a lack of self-control,
- 12:41And in this case, not being able to control our own spirits,
- 12:44but in not being able to control our actions, whatever they might be,
- 12:48without a lack, with a lack of self-control, it leaves us open to attack.
- 12:53Now, this talks about being like a wall, a city with walls that are broken down.
- 12:58But when we're going to excess in whatever situation it is, we're not taking
- 13:03care of ourselves. I think that's what the verse I was alluding to earlier is
- 13:08found in Philippians chapter 4 and verse 5.
- 13:10And he says, let your moderation be known unto all men.
- 13:14The Lord is at hand. We're called to live moderate lives.
- 13:19Right. Not excess in materialism, not excess in food, not excess in wealth, not excess.
- 13:27We are to live so that when people see us, there aren't distracting things about
- 13:32us that are so beyond what the norm is that they can't see Jesus.
- 13:38And so if you are always discussing your wealth, they're not seeing Jesus,
- 13:45they're seeing your wealth.
- 13:47If you are displaying your wealth all the time on yourself and all the other
- 13:53things, they're not seeing Jesus, they're seeing your wealth.
- 13:56And I'm not saying at all that it's bad to have material things.
- 13:59I'm not saying that it's bad to be wealthy.
- 14:03What I'm saying is seek that with the Lord.
- 14:07And every purchase you make, whether it's the bag of oranges,
- 14:12the bit of honey bar, or the BMW, you pray.
- 14:18And God will tell you what it is you need to do. And sometimes just because
- 14:22you can doesn't mean you should.
- 14:26Because sometimes he wants to make sure there's no distractions.
- 14:30He always wants to make sure there are no distractions in your life where they
- 14:34would see something you have or something you do or something about you before they see Jesus in you.
- 14:41And I think if we really fully start to understand that we are the ambassadors
- 14:46of Jesus Christ and that when you walk into a room,
- 14:50yeah, they know my name is Kim Miller, but it's my prayer they see some fruit
- 14:55of the Spirit, like we learn in Galatians 5,
- 14:57or that my reputation for loving the Lord precedes me and my actions and my
- 15:04walk while in their presence affirms it.
- 15:08We don't want things that distract people from seeing the Lord.
- 15:12That's all I'm saying. He says in Philippians 4, 5, that we are to do all things in moderation.
- 15:19Absolutely. So in that theme of living lives that are showing off Jesus and
- 15:25not showing off ourselves, let's look at how we're supposed to deal with our
- 15:29enemies, which we read in verses 21 and 22.
- 15:32If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat. and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink.
- 15:39For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee.
- 15:44And I think that when we look at these two verses, what we're seeing is that.
- 15:49It's our job to repay evil with good.
- 15:54It's our job to let the battle be fought by the Lord and for us to be good to
- 16:03people regardless of what they do to us.
- 16:07Scripture tells us that we are to love one another as Christ loved us.
- 16:11And I don't care how good you think you are. I don't even care how good the world thinks you are.
- 16:15The Bible says that we are all as filthy rags, that none of us are good, no, not one.
- 16:21So beyond the cleansing power of the blood of Jesus, the mercy and the grace
- 16:26that he bestows upon us. We're not that much.
- 16:29And we are to live Christ-like. He said he went about doing good and we are
- 16:35to do the same because we are Christians.
- 16:37And so it only stands the reason that we are to show loving ways to those who are our enemies.
- 16:46We were an enemy of God and he loved us and we love him because he first loved us.
- 16:51But one step further in that processing of that thought of loving our enemies
- 16:56is that's how you're going to show them Jesus.
- 17:00Because flesh wants to get even. Yes.
- 17:04At best, flesh wants to just ignore them and remove them from their lives, your life.
- 17:10But Jesus says, hey, you see their need?
- 17:13You fix their need just like you would the person you love the most in this world.
- 17:18And I'm telling you, you talk about being a witness.
- 17:22You talk about they're going to be scratching their head and trying to figure
- 17:25out just what is different about you. How could you do that?
- 17:29And the people around you will also be touched and probably questioning what is happening.
- 17:38And then you're fully living out Matthew 5, 16, which says, let your good works
- 17:43glorify your father, which is in heaven.
- 17:45That's what you're going to be doing. So let your light so shine before men
- 17:49that they may see your good works and glorify your father, which is in heaven.
- 17:53I love this idea of our good works and glory given to God be what people should see.
- 18:01You know, there are verses in this chapter about humility.
- 18:05You know, verses 6 and 7 says, Put not forth thyself in the presence of the
- 18:09king, and stand not in the place of great men.
- 18:12It's not our job to go to the king and say, hey, look at me, look at me, here I am.
- 18:19And if we look at verse seven, for better it is that it be said unto thee,
- 18:24come up hither, that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince
- 18:28whom thine eyes have seen.
- 18:30We're called to be humble and we're called to let the Lord call us up, right?
- 18:37Call us up for duty, call us up for service.
- 18:40And you know, he says he has a plan for us and that plan is to prosper us and
- 18:44give us a hope. And when we place ourselves in places, we're basically superseding his plan.
- 18:51Now, if he puts you in that place, that's different.
- 18:56But oftentimes that's not what happens. But what we know is that we are told that in 1 Peter 5, 6,
- 19:04that if we submit ourselves to him, if we humble ourselves under the mighty
- 19:09hand of God in due time, he will exalt us.
- 19:12And his exaltation of us is far higher and greater than we could ever do for ourselves.
- 19:19But we just get ahead of him. I mentioned a little bit earlier about.
- 19:24Be still and know that I am God. That doesn't mean you're just sitting there.
- 19:29That means you are actively being still.
- 19:33You're not getting ahead of the Lord, and that's a conscious decision,
- 19:37and it's a disciplined way of living.
- 19:39And while you're doing that, you should be praying and studying and listening
- 19:43and hearing until the day comes that He moves you forward and you get progress
- 19:48and a direction because that's when he's ready for you to receive the blessing he has for you.
- 19:56And if you go and get ahead of him, you're creating a false or fake blessing,
- 20:01one far less than what he had.
- 20:03But he tempers us and he molds us like in Jeremiah 18, where he says he's the
- 20:09potter and we're the clay.
- 20:10And when he has us really right and ready to receive what he really has for us, then he exalts us.
- 20:17And I think every Christian needs to really just put the brakes on,
- 20:23not on the brakes on Jesus or the Holy Spirit, but the brakes on their own self-will.
- 20:28And that's what that submitting and humbling is that he's talking about.
- 20:32And then you can receive the blessings that God has designed exactly for you and your mind.
- 20:40The Bible says that I have not seen and ear hath not heard what lies in store
- 20:43for them that love the Lord.
- 20:44We can't comprehend the blessings that God has for us.
- 20:48And Ephesians 3.20 tells us that he can do exceeding abundantly above all that
- 20:53we ask or think according to the power that works in us.
- 20:57And so when I talked about a little bit earlier that we are not to do excess.
- 21:01But to be filled with the Spirit, it's this filling of the Spirit that brings
- 21:06contentment and joy and peace and the blessings of God. Amen.
- 21:13Amen. I feel like we could stop right there, but we promised just a few verses.
- 21:18On being a good neighbor, which comes out of that.
- 21:22If we are living as Jesus calls us to live, we're going to be a good neighbor
- 21:27for those that are our actual neighbors, for the that live near us,
- 21:32for those that are our neighbors that may live far, but that we may come into contact with.
- 21:37But I love that verse 17 says, withdraw thy foot from thy neighbor's house,
- 21:42lest he be weary of thee, right? Don't overstay your welcome.
- 21:48Some of these verses are really just very practical. Don't overstay your welcome.
- 21:53Verse 18 talks about a man that bears false witness against his neighbor, right?
- 21:57We've got to live honestly and uprightly in this world.
- 22:02There is so much dishonesty in this world.
- 22:05We need to be the contrast to that as followers of Christ, and we need to be
- 22:10honest with our neighbors.
- 22:12In verse 19, confidence in an unfaithful man in a time of trouble is like a broken tooth, right?
- 22:19We need to be people that are reliable for our neighbors because this verse
- 22:26tells us if there's someone that you can't depend on, it's painful.
- 22:31It's painful like a broken tooth. And we live in community.
- 22:35We do live in community. You're created to live in community,
- 22:38and the people around you are around you for a specific reason.
- 22:43And it's just not random chaos that you live where you live.
- 22:48It's not random chaos that those around you live around you.
- 22:52It is part of God's divine plan.
- 22:55And first and foremost, it has to be that we show people Jesus.
- 22:59And you can't show people Jesus if you can't get along with them.
- 23:03Because Jesus got along with everybody.
- 23:05Yes. And he loved everyone, even when he was tearing the tables up in the temple.
- 23:09Absolutely. I think that what we really need to do here is to remind ourselves
- 23:15every day as we walk out the door.
- 23:18Where we might run into anybody else, that it's our job to be Jesus for whoever
- 23:24it is that we come in contact with.
- 23:27It's our job to act like Jesus. It's our job to bring Jesus.
- 23:31It's our job to remember that we are carrying Jesus into all of our situations.
- 23:37And the only way that that can happen is if you humble yourself to him.
- 23:42You know, there's a common colloquial phrase called bring it when you want someone
- 23:47to, you know, you're challenging them.
- 23:49And I'm going to challenge all of us, myself included. Bring it.
- 23:53Bring the word. Bring his character. Bring his goodness.
- 23:58And let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works. And glorify who?
- 24:04Your Father, which is in heaven.
