- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up everyone and welcome to another episode of the
- 0:03Speaker 1: Epstein Chronicles. In this episode, we're going to finish off
- 0:07Speaker 1: with a Jess Daly transcript from his trip to Congress.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Question I'd like to introduce as Minority Exhibit AI in
- 0:14Speaker 1: an email exchange between you and Mr. Epstein dated December 27th, 2010.
- 0:18Speaker 1: The Bates number is EFTA 00648887. I would also like
- 0:19Speaker 1: to introduce as Minority Exhibit AJ An email exchange between
- 0:30Speaker 1: you and Mr. Epstein dated January 22, 2011. The Bates
- 0:35Speaker 1: number is EFTA 013-00907. In the first exchange, you tell Mr.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Epstein that you, quote, scheduled a dinner on Little St.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Jeff's on January 21. In the second exchange, you tell Mr.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Epstein that his island is a paradise. Answer, I've lost you. Question,
- 0:54Speaker 1: in the first exchange, which is from December 22, 2010, Mr.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Sullivan jumps in. What did he say? Question. My apologies.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I misspoke. December 27th, 2010 is the first exchange. From
- 1:08Speaker 1: December 27th, 2010, you tell Mr. Epstein that you, quote,
- 1:12Speaker 1: scheduled a dinner on Little St. Jeff's on January 21st.
- 1:17Speaker 1: It's the second line of your email. Answer. Yup. Wait, wait, wait.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Staley says he gets cut off. In the second exchange,
- 1:25Speaker 1: you tell Mr. Epstein that his island is a paradise.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Did you go back to Mr. Epstein's Island in January
- 1:32Speaker 1: of 2011? Answer. Again, I think I said that I
- 1:35Speaker 1: was in transit on my boat. Question. Well, in your
- 1:38Speaker 1: first email, you say, quote, scheduled a dinner on Little St.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Jeff's on January 21st. So it looks like that at
- 1:44Speaker 1: the very least, you had a dinner on Little St. Jeff's. Answer.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I don't know. This is an email from December, so
- 1:52Speaker 1: a full month before. Question. Right. And then the second
- 1:55Speaker 1: gets cut off by Staley. answer so I don't know
- 1:59Speaker 1: whether I had dinner and on this next email just
- 2:02Speaker 1: talks about visiting his island not about having dinner on
- 2:05Speaker 1: his island question it's from the day after you had
- 2:09Speaker 1: apparently scheduled a dinner answer I scheduled a dinner months
- 2:13Speaker 1: before I was on my boat I had no idea
- 2:15Speaker 1: whether I had dinner on my boat or off my
- 2:17Speaker 1: boat question I'll represent to you that Mr. Epstein's birthday
- 2:21Speaker 1: is January 20th that's because one is from December and
- 2:25Speaker 1: one is from January Question, I'll represent to you that Mr.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Epstein's birthday was January 20th. So it looks like you
- 2:33Speaker 1: were sending him an email on December 27th, 2010, saying
- 2:37Speaker 1: that you scheduled a dinner on Little St. Jeff's on
- 2:40Speaker 1: January 21st, which would be the day after his birthday.
- 2:43Speaker 1: But then, about a month later, on January 22nd of 2011,
- 2:48Speaker 1: you referred to his island as being paradise. Answer, yes. Question,
- 2:52Speaker 1: so taken together, these look like you scheduled the dinner
- 2:55Speaker 1: on the island for his birthday, had that dinner, and
- 2:58Speaker 1: then sent an email the day after saying, what a paradise. Question,
- 3:02Speaker 1: but there's nothing in the second email that talks about
- 3:04Speaker 1: a dinner for his birthday the previous night, and you
- 3:07Speaker 1: would think if that happened that I would have mentioned that.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Great to see you or something like that, and there's
- 3:11Speaker 1: nothing there. Question, so you don't think you visited his
- 3:14Speaker 1: island again in January of 2011? Answer again, my recollection
- 3:20Speaker 1: is there were three times that I was on his island,
- 3:22Speaker 1: but I was staying on my boat, so it's possible. Question,
- 3:26Speaker 1: In the second exchange you say, I think Larry is sad.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Is it possible that you're referring to Larry Summers, here
- 3:32Speaker 1: who was also part of the birthday dinner? Answer, which
- 3:35Speaker 1: birthday dinner again are you talking about? Question, who was
- 3:39Speaker 1: also part of the dinner that you scheduled on Little St.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Jeff's on January 21st? Answer, but Epstein's emailing me on
- 3:45Speaker 1: the 22nd saying, do you like the kitchen? As if
- 3:50Speaker 1: I wasn't with him on the 21st. The way you're
- 3:52Speaker 1: trying to tie it together doesn't make sense in how
- 3:55Speaker 1: I read it. Question, so you don't believe that you
- 3:57Speaker 1: visited Mr. Epstein's island in January of 2011? Answer, again,
- 4:02Speaker 1: I believe that I was on my boat, and I
- 4:04Speaker 1: may have stopped on the island on the 11th, but
- 4:06Speaker 1: I don't remember it. Question, you may have stopped on
- 4:09Speaker 1: his island in January of 2011 and potentially had dinner? Answer,
- 4:14Speaker 1: I think if I had dinner on his island, I
- 4:16Speaker 1: would have mentioned this, so I don't. Question, I would
- 4:19Speaker 1: like to introduce as Minority Exhibit AK, a manifest for
- 4:22Speaker 1: a flight from Jersey to To St. Thomas on April 11th, 2015.
- 4:26Speaker 1: The manifest lists you, your wife, Jeffrey Epstein, and two
- 4:31Speaker 1: additional women. Redacted, and another woman whose name we will
- 4:35Speaker 1: not read because it's not public, as passengers. I'll give
- 4:38Speaker 1: you a minute to look it over. Answer, okay. Question,
- 4:41Speaker 1: it appears this manifest is referring to your visit to Mr.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Epstein's island in April of 2015, correct? Answer, I'm not sure, no.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I don't think I visited his island. I think we
- 4:51Speaker 1: were on the boat. So we may have caught a
- 4:53Speaker 1: ride with him to St. Thomas, but went on an
- 4:55Speaker 1: R boat. Question, other than the people listed as passengers
- 4:59Speaker 1: on the plane, was there anyone else with you? Answer,
- 5:02Speaker 1: the crew. Question, you previously said earlier today that you
- 5:06Speaker 1: didn't believe that you'd ever met Redacted. Answer, that's correct. Question,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and it shows that you were on a plane with her, correct? Answer, correct. Question,
- 5:14Speaker 1: do you remember being on a plane with her? Answer, no,
- 5:16Speaker 1: I don't. Question, and so your recollection is that you
- 5:20Speaker 1: were on a boat, but you didn't actually visit his island.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Is that correct? Answer, that's correct. Question, I would like
- 5:26Speaker 1: to introduce as Minority Exhibit AL in an email from
- 5:29Speaker 1: you to Mr. Epstein dated April 12, 2015, which is
- 5:34Speaker 1: the following day. The date's number is EFTA 01746275. In
- 5:41Speaker 1: the email, you say, quote, thanks for the flight. Thanks
- 5:44Speaker 1: for lunch. Your place is crazy and special. It has
- 5:48Speaker 1: a warmth and silliness that makes it yours. I count
- 5:51Speaker 1: you as a deep friend. The girls seem to enjoy
- 5:53Speaker 1: the sale. So, you flew on his private plane, you
- 5:57Speaker 1: had lunch, but then you say, Your place is crazy
- 5:59Speaker 1: and special. It has a warmth and silliness that makes
- 6:02Speaker 1: it yours. That suggests that you did also visit the island. Agree? Answer,
- 6:07Speaker 1: I said thanks for lunch, yes. Question, sure. But then
- 6:10Speaker 1: you say, Your place is crazy and special. It has
- 6:14Speaker 1: a warmth and silliness that makes it yours. Answer, That's
- 6:18Speaker 1: the same to me as thanks for lunch. Question. Where
- 6:21Speaker 1: would you have had lunch? Answer. On his island, it
- 6:23Speaker 1: seems like. Question. Okay, so to clarify, you flew on
- 6:27Speaker 1: his plane on April 11th, 2015, and then you had
- 6:30Speaker 1: lunch on the island the same day? Answer. It seems like. Question.
- 6:34Speaker 1: When you say, quote, the girls seem to enjoy the sale.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Who are the girls? Answer. I don't know. I don't recall. Question.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Your daughters were not with you at this point. Correct. Answer.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I believe this flight was just my wife and myself. Correct. Question,
- 6:48Speaker 1: so were the girls, either girls or young women, that
- 6:51Speaker 1: worked for Mr. Epstein? Answer, I don't recall. Question, you
- 6:55Speaker 1: have no recollection of going sailing with the girls? Answer, no. Question,
- 6:59Speaker 1: so to summarize, you visited Mr. Epstein's island in February
- 7:03Speaker 1: of 2005, and in April of 2015, in 2005, it
- 7:05Speaker 1: was with your family, and in 2015, it was with
- 7:07Speaker 1: your wife, correct? Answer, in 2005, we stayed on the island.
- 7:09Speaker 1: In 2015... I think we were staying on our boat. Question,
- 7:20Speaker 1: and in January of 2010, you may have seen him
- 7:22Speaker 1: at the marina in the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas. Answer,
- 7:26Speaker 1: I think he may have came by and seen my boat. Question,
- 7:29Speaker 1: and your recollection is that you did not also visit
- 7:33Speaker 1: in January of 2011. Answer, that's my recollection. Question, you
- 7:38Speaker 1: also flew on Mr. Epstein's plane multiple times. The times
- 7:42Speaker 1: that we have discussed are three instances in February of
- 7:45Speaker 1: 2005 and then once in April of 2015, correct? Answer,
- 7:50Speaker 1: I don't recall. Question, do you remember any other time
- 7:53Speaker 1: that you flew on Mr. Epstein's plane? Answer, I remember
- 7:56Speaker 1: flying on a 727 and I remember flying on his Gulfstream,
- 8:00Speaker 1: but I don't know. It either would have been between
- 8:03Speaker 1: here in Florida or here in St. Thomas or New York, sorry. Question, Mr. Staley.
- 8:08Speaker 1: I'm concerned that you have not been entirely honest with
- 8:11Speaker 1: us today, in large part because you have a history
- 8:14Speaker 1: of saying what you think you need to get what
- 8:16Speaker 1: you want. I want to ask you about the history
- 8:19Speaker 1: and see if you have an explanation for us. Back
- 8:22Speaker 1: in the fall of 2019, the president and trustees of
- 8:25Speaker 1: Bowdoin College, your alma mater, became concerned about your association
- 8:29Speaker 1: with Mr. Epstein, correct? Answer, correct. Question, and you were
- 8:33Speaker 1: a trustee at Bowdoin College, correct? Answer, correct. Question, and
- 8:37Speaker 1: you wanted to remain a trustee of Bowdoin College, correct? Answer, correct.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Question and response, you gave a presentation to the Bowdoin
- 8:45Speaker 1: College trustees about your relationship with Mr. Epstein, correct? Answer, correct. Question,
- 8:51Speaker 1: and as part of your presentation, you made a number
- 8:54Speaker 1: of statements to the Bowdoin College trustees, correct? Answer, correct. Question,
- 8:59Speaker 1: and this was before the Department of Justice released some
- 9:01Speaker 1: of the files on Mr. Epstein, correct? Answer, correct. Question,
- 9:06Speaker 1: One of those statements was, I had limited contact with
- 9:09Speaker 1: him post his conviction. We know that between 2008 and 2012,
- 9:14Speaker 1: you exchanged over 1,200 emails with Mr. Epstein. That's nearly
- 9:20Speaker 1: 300 emails a year, or almost an email a day.
- 9:23Speaker 1: How is that limited contact? Answer again. I have used
- 9:27Speaker 1: the word contact as being with him, having contact with somebody,
- 9:31Speaker 1: not necessarily an email. Question, do you think that's how
- 9:35Speaker 1: the world or the word was understood when you said
- 9:38Speaker 1: it to the Bowdoin College trustees that contact meant physical contact?
- 9:44Speaker 1: I can't speak for the Bowdoin trustees, but I think
- 9:46Speaker 1: that's what I was referring to. Question, another statement was quote,
- 9:51Speaker 1: gets cut off by Staley. I'm sorry, I don't know.
- 9:54Speaker 1: When you say that number of emails, is it like
- 9:56Speaker 1: separate emails or is it like a chain? You say hi,
- 9:59Speaker 1: I say hi, you say, what are you doing? I
- 10:01Speaker 1: say nothing. What are you doing? Question. It's a finding
- 10:05Speaker 1: from the financial conduct authority answer, but we don't know
- 10:09Speaker 1: whether it's okay. Question individual emails or email chains. No,
- 10:14Speaker 1: I think it's still a pretty high number. Another statement was, quote,
- 10:17Speaker 1: at no time after his conviction in 2008 did I
- 10:20Speaker 1: allow J.E. any connection with any respect of my personal life. Indeed,
- 10:25Speaker 1: I have never had any professional relationship with J.E. except
- 10:29Speaker 1: for his relationship with J.P. Morgan's private bank, which began
- 10:32Speaker 1: long before I ever met him. There is an overwhelming
- 10:35Speaker 1: evidence that this is false. You asked Mr. Epstein for
- 10:38Speaker 1: advice on your salary. You shared confidential information about how
- 10:42Speaker 1: your business was doing and what deals you were working on.
- 10:45Speaker 1: You told Mr. Epstein about meetings that you had with
- 10:48Speaker 1: government officials and meetings that others had with government officials.
- 10:52Speaker 1: And you gave Mr. Epstein multiple updates on the hiring
- 10:55Speaker 1: process at Barclays. Why would you lie about this to
- 10:59Speaker 1: the Bowdoin College trustees? Answer, can you repeat what I
- 11:02Speaker 1: said to the Bowdoin College trustees? Question, at no time
- 11:07Speaker 1: after his conviction in 2008, did I allow J.E. any
- 11:10Speaker 1: connection with any aspects of my professional life? Indeed, I
- 11:14Speaker 1: have never had any professional relationship with J.E., except for
- 11:18Speaker 1: his relationship with J.P. Morgan's private bank, which began long
- 11:22Speaker 1: before I ever met him. Answer, and I think that
- 11:24Speaker 1: was referring to him being like a client, him advising
- 11:27Speaker 1: on a transaction like Hybridge. I don't believe that. I
- 11:30Speaker 1: think it was actually doing business with him as opposed
- 11:33Speaker 1: to using him to give me counsel with respect to
- 11:35Speaker 1: my career. I think those are separate things. Question, I
- 11:39Speaker 1: don't follow that distinction. You say you didn't allow him
- 11:42Speaker 1: any connection with any aspect of your professional life after
- 11:46Speaker 1: his conviction. When he is in jail, you email him
- 11:49Speaker 1: asking what your salary should be. That very much seems
- 11:52Speaker 1: like after his conviction, you're allowing him a connection to
- 11:55Speaker 1: an aspect of your professional life. Answer, I think I
- 11:59Speaker 1: was talking about connections of actually business being conducted in
- 12:02Speaker 1: my professional life, not about me. Question, I'm not sure
- 12:06Speaker 1: what you mean by that. Connections about business? Answer, so
- 12:09Speaker 1: the selling of American Century or thinking of buying, about
- 12:13Speaker 1: buying Dimensional or having him involved in the acquisition of
- 12:16Speaker 1: Highbridge as separate from. I'm thinking of going to Barclays.
- 12:20Speaker 1: What do you think? One is sort of advice about
- 12:22Speaker 1: my professional life. The other is about transactions and business. Question,
- 12:28Speaker 1: I'm still not following you because you did both. You
- 12:31Speaker 1: asked him for advice on your professional life and you shared,
- 12:34Speaker 1: gets cut off by Staley, right, right? I think after
- 12:37Speaker 1: his conviction, I wouldn't know. If I was doing a transaction,
- 12:41Speaker 1: I wouldn't bring him in to get involved in the transaction.
- 12:44Speaker 1: That's very different than my professional personal life. Question, right,
- 12:48Speaker 1: but after his conviction, you did both. You shared information
- 12:51Speaker 1: about deals that you were working on. Staley, very little. Question,
- 12:55Speaker 1: and we've talked about that though. You shared information with
- 12:58Speaker 1: them about deals that you were working on. You told
- 13:01Speaker 1: them about meetings you were having with government officials. Answer,
- 13:05Speaker 1: and that's different. Question, sure. And then, in other categories,
- 13:08Speaker 1: you asked them for advice about what you should say
- 13:11Speaker 1: to Jamie Dimon in a salary negotiation. Answer, right again,
- 13:15Speaker 1: but that's different from bringing him to actual business transactions
- 13:18Speaker 1: like American Century or Dimensional or Highbridge. Question, so you
- 13:22Speaker 1: think that the natural reading of this statement that you
- 13:25Speaker 1: made to the Bowdoin College trustees is that you were
- 13:28Speaker 1: saying that you didn't do some kind of formal business
- 13:30Speaker 1: with them? Answer, yeah. Question, when you say at no
- 13:33Speaker 1: time after his conviction in 2008, did I allow J.E.
- 13:38Speaker 1: any connection with any aspect of my professional life? Answer,
- 13:41Speaker 1: that would have been public and involved in a transaction.
- 13:44Speaker 1: That's correct. Whereas before, he was paid $ 15 million to
- 13:48Speaker 1: advise on a transaction with Highbridge. That's the sort of
- 13:51Speaker 1: thing that I was referring to. Question, I don't see
- 13:54Speaker 1: the distinction, Mr. Staley. And instead, it looks like you're
- 13:57Speaker 1: giving information to the Bowdoin trustees, excuse me, the Bowdoin
- 14:00Speaker 1: College trustees. That is not entirely accurate because at the time,
- 14:04Speaker 1: all of the emails and documents that we have were
- 14:07Speaker 1: not public. And if you were comfortable lying then, how
- 14:11Speaker 1: do we know you're not lying to us now? Answer,
- 14:13Speaker 1: I'm not lying to you. Question, that's all we have.
- 14:17Speaker 1: That concludes the hour. Whereupon, at 5.46 p.m., the interview
- 14:22Speaker 1: was concluded. All the information that goes with this episode
- 14:26Speaker 1: can be found in the description box.
