Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_04: Hello and welcome back to the hodl cast.
- 0:04SPEAKER_04: I won't said hodl cast.
- 0:06SPEAKER_04: The hodl cast.
- 0:07SPEAKER_04: I'm Kyle.
- 0:08SPEAKER_02: This is Matt.
- 0:09SPEAKER_04: And Ryan.
- 0:10SPEAKER_04: And then Mark over on the sticks.
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:14SPEAKER_04: Well, good.
- 0:16SPEAKER_04: Ryan, you were just away on the youth retreat.
- 0:18SPEAKER_04: Good you're back.
- 0:19SPEAKER_04: You survived 41 youth up north.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: I I did survive.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: I did survive.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: I I definitely I definitely felt it after the first day.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: My my body was reminding me how old it was, but but it was it was a blast, man.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: We had a lot of a lot of fun and and the kids really, I mean there was a lot of a lot of growth and also just just a lot of connection, just a lot of a lot of laugh, and and and really just hanging out together.
- 0:42SPEAKER_04: That's good.
- 0:42SPEAKER_04: I'm glad to hear it.
- 0:43SPEAKER_04: So my kids seem to have a good time, so that's always good.
- 0:46SPEAKER_04: And uh Mark, you were there too.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I was.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: We had an awesome time with the kids.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: The competitions were fierce, and the sportsman conduct was very well uh exhibited by the leaders, and I think the kids started following in suit with it.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: So Mark, did your body remind you how old it is too?
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Only on the second day.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: It wasn't the first day for me.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: Since I'm younger, it took a little longer.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: So I I am.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: I did the mat I actually did the math this weekend we because we were leaders were having a conversation, and we determined that I am old enough to be Mark's dad.
- 1:23SPEAKER_04: You are almost twice as old as Mark.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:27SPEAKER_04: That's Papa.
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: Well, uh, what did you think of the camp?
- 1:35SPEAKER_04: I mean, that's my buddy uh Chuck's camp.
- 1:37SPEAKER_04: So what'd you think of Manton's camp?
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: I thought it was a I thought it was a good setup.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: I mean, it and and the fact that they were cool with us being, you know, kind of kind of a kind of a a little bit of a rowdier kind of bunch.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: So I mean, but they all the people seemed really happy that we were there.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: They weren't really, you know, um, and it it was a great setup.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: I I really liked the idea that we were in cabins and um tons of space.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: So yeah, all the stuff was nice and close by, so we didn't have to travel super far for anything.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: But there was also plenty of space for us to do like large field games.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: There was a kickball, uh softball field right next to us, so we did play kickball.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: The kitchen was phenomenal, like the setup they have.
- 2:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they don't even use it, it was just crazy.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: It was incredible with what they had for us.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: So we were very thankful.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: And then you had both a pool that you could access and then also the lake nearby, true.
- 2:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, we did we had a splash pad, yeah, and a splash pad.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Yep, the kids had fun with it.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: It's funny watching them because you just hit the button and then all the fountains started going off, and so the kids kept randomly just pushing it and then running back through it.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: So even if they didn't, I think at one point they didn't even have their swim stuff on, and I saw like a couple kids doing it.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: I'm like here.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, all right.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: You do you do you?
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: That's a that's a choice.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: So somebody leaned on it.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: I think I think they were gonna take a picture of somebody, something right there, and somebody leaned on it, and it was like, who that's funny.
- 2:56SPEAKER_04: I love splash pads.
- 2:57SPEAKER_04: I don't think you're too old to enjoy a splash pad, but I love plugging all the holes and making water shoot up higher out of the other stuff.
- 3:03SPEAKER_04: So that's like that's cool.
- 3:06SPEAKER_04: That's yeah, we can make it go, plug the holes.
- 3:09SPEAKER_04: Um, that's cool.
- 3:11SPEAKER_04: Well, um, what you missed here was uh a vision sermon.
- 3:15SPEAKER_04: We talked about our vision and we talked about going the extra mile.
- 3:18SPEAKER_04: Um that's what we talked about is if you know if someone asks you to go one mile, go to.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: Talking about just Jesus' sermon on the mount where he's just telling people how to be in relationship with each other, and really talked about as our vision for 330.
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: You know, if we want Jesus to increase and us to decrease in our priorities in our life, going the extra mile is a good way to do it.
- 3:40SPEAKER_04: So you know, making sure you you go above and beyond what is necessary for other people.
- 3:47SPEAKER_04: So what do you think about that?
- 3:48SPEAKER_04: What do you think about?
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: I really liked whenever you had gone down the list of what an extra mile church looks like, where you had all of those different points and all of the different things, because I don't think that anybody could have walked out of that and thought, oh well, this didn't apply to me.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: Like there's not something here that I could connect with, because there were so many points that as you were kind of driving each one of those home, that it's like, oh yeah, I'm maybe not doing great on that one.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: Like it was super convicting as far as you know being able to look at it and say, Yeah, there are definitely areas where I could, you know, be improving or be working at least a little bit harder on this thing or that thing or the other.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: I think that it was really cool because that's what it should be.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Like you and I have both worked at churches where we've seen even people who are in the on the outer boards of the churches we were at, where there are some that would be definitely extra mile Christians, and there were others that were very clearly not.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: Phoning in their faith, yeah.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 4:42SPEAKER_04: No, that's that's good.
- 4:44SPEAKER_04: You weren't here, but what do you what do you think as you hear about it?
- 4:47SPEAKER_04: Extra mile Christianity going the extra mile.
- 4:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it has to do the minimum.
- 4:51SPEAKER_04: What about doing the maximum?
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: I I think it checks out.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, you're right, I didn't watch a sermon yet.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: So um so but uh but no, I I mean I'm with you.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, yeah, I think that checks out.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, my my mind goes right back to that that of course I'm pretty simple, but the same same concepts that I think, like it's that non-transactional sort of sort of life, right?
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: The more, the more the more I don't transact with the world, the more I love the world with my heart, and and the more I'm willing to go that extra mile because I'm not there's nothing in it for me other than to bring somebody else closer to Jesus.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: And and and the paradox of that is when I put my effort into bringing somebody else closer to Jesus, I actually bring myself closer to Jesus too.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: And and I and I think that when we like we get that, right?
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: And so we do that, and then we get closer and we go, oh, well, that extra mile is actually pretty awesome, you know.
- 5:48unknown: Yeah.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think it's easy to become a cruise control Christian where you just like are coasting and not even paying attention to where you're at.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: I thank you.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: I I just thought of it and I was like, this is really clever, and I wanna say this.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: No, you text that to me.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: That's okay.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: I'll text, I'll text that so you can't.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: Well, because like Christian, and like there's different speed zones, or like sometimes there's a stop sign, and if you're a cruise control Christian, you're not even gonna be paying attention.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: You're just letting the car do the work and you're not even doing anything else.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: You got to the speed you wanted to get to, and now you're just staying there.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: But when you interact with different people from different backgrounds, like you need to honor them, you need to care for them, you need to.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: I like how going that extra mile, like go out of the way to show honor, show love, show grace, show compassion to somebody.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and so when you're just set, you're just set, you're not even trying.
- 6:36SPEAKER_04: I mean, I can't take credit for the extra mile concept.
- 6:38SPEAKER_04: That's definitely Jesus.
- 6:40SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, that's true.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: The thing that I've learned in the time that we've done done ministry together is there are things that you learn in the first mile that are okay, but in the second mile, that's where you really get to learn a lot of really cool stuff.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: Because I think of all of the times that both you and I have been through things in ministry, or even the times we did stuff in ministry together, where sometimes you're you're making a wrong turn and you end up talking to somebody because of it, and it's like, okay, it's because this wrong thing happened, or because I was willing to, you know, put myself in the middle of the interruption to be able to allow that to be the thing that carries what my entire day needed to be.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: Where you're able to then look at it and say, Yeah, this is the reason why this played out like this.
- 7:22SPEAKER_04: And I love how Jesus says go the extra mile, and then Paul says, run is to win the ri the race.
- 7:27SPEAKER_04: So like there's this concept of we're gonna go, we're gonna go the extra mile, we're gonna run hard.
- 7:31SPEAKER_04: Like it's it's not like we're gonna, oh yeah, I just gotta do a little extra.
- 7:34SPEAKER_04: No, no, you won't run to win.
- 7:36SPEAKER_04: Like that extra mile, you're you're pushing, and you're pushing.
- 7:39SPEAKER_04: And like I think the the big thing that I've been really trying to hit on the last summer about faith is like it's not my job, it's ours.
- 7:47SPEAKER_04: Like just because I'm a pastor, it's not my job to go reach people for Jesus, it's ours' job.
- 7:52SPEAKER_04: Like, we're all equally responsible for to this call.
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm part of a church and that's my job, but like I'm equally responsible for reaching lost people and introducing them to faith and introducing them to Jesus.
- 8:03SPEAKER_04: And if you're on cruise control, you feel like, oh yeah, somebody else got that, so somebody else will do it.
- 8:07SPEAKER_04: But really, if you you know, I think that's what we need to get out of cruise control and we need to get back in the game.
- 8:12SPEAKER_04: So I do I do like that.
- 8:13SPEAKER_04: It's a good idea.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: I was just saying you keep bringing it up.
- 8:15SPEAKER_04: Mark's good.
- 8:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Mark's goodly look, this is my best day of my life.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: Well, cause I mean, like, because in the culture, like, because I I remember reading that part where like the they had to carry the armor, because that was like the cultural expectation.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Like that was a Roman rule.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: You carried it for a mile.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: And so, like, the fact that like anybody would be like, do the bare minimum.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: Anybody would like more a standard person would.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: So as a Christian, we need to not just show the standard person response, we need to show the above and I'm sure that's essentially what you were talking about.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: How the world is needs to people need to see that we are different, people need to see that there's something else going on and that God's guiding us.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: And it does it does a normal person doesn't go, you know what, I'm gonna keep doing this for you.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: A normal person would be like, Oh, this is what this is all you wanted me to do?
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Okay, thanks.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Bye.
- 9:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like that shows people the minimum I can do to make you happy, is what most people do.
- 9:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, what's the min tell me Ryan, what's the minimum I can do to make you happy with me?
- 9:12SPEAKER_04: That's usually what we're asking.
- 9:14SPEAKER_04: Like, what do you need for me?
- 9:15SPEAKER_04: That you're usually saying, tell me the exact minimum to make you happy.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: What's the least inconvenience?
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: What's the least amount you can bother me?
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right?
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Like, because I really don't want to be bothered, but I also feel like that's real, that is really what we're asking people.
- 9:30SPEAKER_04: Like, hey, tell me what I can do for you.
- 9:32SPEAKER_04: But but don't tell me too much because I just want to give you the bare minimum to make you happy.
- 9:36SPEAKER_04: Like, um, that is that's like humanity, that's like 2026, that's America.
- 9:42SPEAKER_04: I mean, that is literally what we're really saying to each other.
- 9:45SPEAKER_04: That's the subtext.
- 9:46SPEAKER_04: I wish we we could say all the real subtext, like, hey Mark, I know you need help right now, but what's the bare minimum I can do?
- 9:52SPEAKER_04: This is all I'm doing to be unhappy with me at the end of the day.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: It's like a video or something where like everybody has to tell the truth.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Like it's like a movie or a show or something.
- 10:00SPEAKER_04: Liar, liar.
- 10:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: Is that what it's called?
- 10:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, can't you can't lie.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 10:05SPEAKER_04: That's a famous one.
- 10:06SPEAKER_04: I can't believe you didn't know that one.
- 10:07SPEAKER_04: That's an old movie.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: I've seen clips of it on like wait a minute.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: He said, I can't believe you didn't know that one, and you just said thank you?
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: Did anyone else catch that?
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: You didn't know that one?
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 10:23SPEAKER_04: No, I can't believe he knew that one.
- 10:25SPEAKER_04: That's what he said.
- 10:25SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, that's what he said.
- 10:27SPEAKER_04: He doesn't know movies at all.
- 10:28SPEAKER_04: No.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: I'm aware of that one.
- 10:32SPEAKER_04: So stop doing the bare minimum.
- 10:33SPEAKER_04: If you're listening to this, do more.
- 10:35SPEAKER_04: Give the maximum effort.
- 10:36SPEAKER_04: Don't think about what's the little I can do for people, but what's the most I can do for Jesus in this situation.
- 10:41SPEAKER_04: Get yourself out of cruise control and get in that extra mile.
- 10:45SPEAKER_04: Loving people.
- 10:45SPEAKER_04: So we hope this is encouragement to you.
- 10:47SPEAKER_04: Hope you keep listening.
- 10:48SPEAKER_04: Catch you on the next episode of the HODL cast.
