- 0:51Speaker 3: As far as the mind cars, Larry boscars. That's what
- 0:54Speaker 3: I've heard.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Anyway, there's a rumor there's.
- 0:57Speaker 2: A room I cars.
- 0:58Speaker 3: You've done that for a little while now, I think.
- 0:59Speaker 4: You know this interesting.
- 1:01Speaker 5: I started by business in eighty seven and I sold
- 1:05Speaker 5: in two two four, so I was there thirty seven years.
- 1:08Speaker 5: When I went in, I had very little money and
- 1:11Speaker 5: very small inventory. So I took white shoe polish and
- 1:16Speaker 5: wrote we buy cars, and it's stuck. And I've been
- 1:18Speaker 5: doing that and I actually have the copyright on we
- 1:22Speaker 5: buy cars in state of West Virginia. But where I'm
- 1:25Speaker 5: going is since COVID, since the shortage of cars happened
- 1:30Speaker 5: and actually started really in twenty one, that how many
- 1:37Speaker 5: institutions now are advertising we buy cars. It's not I mean,
- 1:42Speaker 5: you have the Big Boys, which is on the Internet
- 1:44Speaker 5: and pushing your number, but just about every dealership has
- 1:48Speaker 5: a adversement in their website somewhere that you know they'll
- 1:52Speaker 5: buy your car. So it's got very busy out there
- 1:57Speaker 5: were for the longest time I was referred from dealerships
- 2:02Speaker 5: to buying cars. The approach they are taking is that
- 2:07Speaker 5: you know, they need cars for inventory, and they're not
- 2:09Speaker 5: treading on my in my lane. I got it. I'm
- 2:12Speaker 5: just a dot now. But I really started that. I mean,
- 2:17Speaker 5: I'm the yeah right, I started that. I mean, you
- 2:20Speaker 5: can go.
- 2:20Speaker 3: And it wasn't until COVID until just became like a
- 2:22Speaker 3: relatively thing that everybody did. I mean, you were like
- 2:25Speaker 3: the lone person in the in the wilderness for the
- 2:27Speaker 3: longest time.
- 2:28Speaker 5: I think I started this radio station in O two
- 2:32Speaker 5: and possibly three. So let's say COVID really inventory started
- 2:37Speaker 5: dropping in twenty one ish later part of twenty one,
- 2:40Speaker 5: so you take for twenty years. Let's just make it
- 2:43Speaker 5: twenty years. You know, I came on the radio and
- 2:46Speaker 5: we talked about me buying cars. I was the only
- 2:50Speaker 5: one in that lane. I mean occasionally somebody would, you know,
- 2:53Speaker 5: take it back to the dealer they bought it from.
- 2:55Speaker 5: But that's what I did, and so I had let's
- 2:59Speaker 5: say I had a twenty year head start. Now it's
- 3:01Speaker 5: a very busy lane. I mean, everybody everybody's advertising that
- 3:05Speaker 5: what's that the guy called the gas monkey.
- 3:08Speaker 4: I mean he's on there.
- 3:10Speaker 5: Everybody is advertising now. And they got these fancy little abs.
- 3:14Speaker 5: You can put ven numbers in and and you know,
- 3:16Speaker 5: you can get a number. It's it's not always successful,
- 3:19Speaker 5: but you know, most of the time it.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Does work out.
- 3:23Speaker 5: It may not be exactly the exact amount of money.
- 3:26Speaker 5: So I look at this approach now that I'm getting
- 3:31Speaker 5: I'm outside the circle looking in. I'm not a retell
- 3:35Speaker 5: everyday dealer. I am a license automobile dealer, and I'm
- 3:38Speaker 5: still within the guidelines of the Department of Motor Vehicles.
- 3:42Speaker 5: But I'm just kind of mean now, you know. It's
- 3:45Speaker 5: it's I've I've entered into semi retirement. But I really
- 3:50Speaker 5: liked it and enjoyed and I think I I think
- 3:53Speaker 5: that was my strong point, was buying cars. So I've
- 3:56Speaker 5: decided and I have to continue to do that. You know,
- 3:59Speaker 5: first of all, occupy my mind, you know, occupy my space,
- 4:04Speaker 5: and that's what I do. I don't work near like
- 4:08Speaker 5: I used to, and I tell people I kind of
- 4:11Speaker 5: I really don't work. I got a hobby, and I
- 4:13Speaker 5: really like this hobby. It just happens to be what
- 4:15Speaker 5: I used to do. But now that I'm really not
- 4:20Speaker 5: that retel dealer coming here, please buy a car from me,
- 4:23Speaker 5: and all that and pushing the product. Is how many
- 4:26Speaker 5: phone calls I get from people that I once did
- 4:30Speaker 5: business with that doesn't feel that pressure that I'm going
- 4:33Speaker 5: to try to sell my car. They call and ask
- 4:35Speaker 5: for some advice, and sometimes it's in state. Actually, the
- 4:40Speaker 5: last call or two I got was out at the
- 4:42Speaker 5: state and it involved a lady I know that's acquainted
- 4:47Speaker 5: with a really good friend of mine in a real
- 4:49Speaker 5: estate business, and she was baying she and she had
- 4:53Speaker 5: questions and she had no one to ask, so she
- 4:56Speaker 5: called and left the message.
- 4:58Speaker 4: I called her back.
- 4:58Speaker 5: I always called my when if you leave me a message,
- 5:01Speaker 5: I'm going to call you back. And so we talked
- 5:04Speaker 5: and I helped her through it well. Then she got
- 5:06Speaker 5: the title, and she didn't quite understand titles and how
- 5:11Speaker 5: they were and pay the taxes, and she was somewhat
- 5:16Speaker 5: inquiring about a lien that was on a title and
- 5:20Speaker 5: what I'll explain to her. And the listening audience is
- 5:23Speaker 5: probably going to have had this happen to them, or
- 5:26Speaker 5: in the future they're going to have it because they're
- 5:27Speaker 5: going to continue buying cars. But some states, unlike West Virginia,
- 5:32Speaker 5: the leanholder holds the title. In other words, you buy
- 5:36Speaker 5: a car, you finance it down at the local lending institution.
- 5:41Speaker 5: The dealer perfects the lean by paying the sales tax,
- 5:44Speaker 5: and the title is sent to the lending institution. Then
- 5:49Speaker 5: when you pay your vehicle off, the lending institution releases
- 5:54Speaker 5: the lian that is on the front of the title
- 5:57Speaker 5: and they mail it to you. They don't know where
- 6:01Speaker 5: you live. All they have is the dress that you
- 6:04Speaker 5: once lived at. So if you moved it can get
- 6:06Speaker 5: lost in the shuffle. And that's what I tell people.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Whether the bank didn't melt to you well or to me,
- 6:14Speaker 5: I said, they may have, but do you live the
- 6:16Speaker 5: same address as you did when you bought the car,
- 6:19Speaker 5: because all they have is the a dress at the
- 6:23Speaker 5: time of purchase, because it's on the front of the title.
- 6:26Speaker 5: Now I moved, Well that might be the problem. And
- 6:29Speaker 5: so now you have a lost title possession and you go,
- 6:32Speaker 5: I paid it off.
- 6:33Speaker 4: There's no lean on it.
- 6:34Speaker 5: And you go down to the DMV to get a
- 6:37Speaker 5: lost title application and you fill it out and you
- 6:39Speaker 5: stand in line only to find out there's a lean
- 6:42Speaker 5: in your car.
- 6:43Speaker 4: And you go, well, I paid it off.
- 6:45Speaker 5: I know, but the bank only the bank released the
- 6:49Speaker 5: lean and they sent to you, but they don't notify
- 6:52Speaker 5: the DMV. So in the world of titles, you know
- 6:58Speaker 5: that they're pretty important. So you have to follow it
- 7:00Speaker 5: and if you do move, update your mailing address, especially
- 7:04Speaker 5: if you're paying it off. And once you have it
- 7:07Speaker 5: paid off, on the front of that title is a
- 7:10Speaker 5: lean release. So therefore you have a free and clear
- 7:14Speaker 5: title to your car. Now, if you put that in
- 7:17Speaker 5: the Bible and put it up in the closet and
- 7:19Speaker 5: you forget about it and you need that title for
- 7:25Speaker 5: whatever reason. And there's where I come in at is
- 7:29Speaker 5: that Uncle Joe died. We can't find this title. That's
- 7:33Speaker 5: very common. That's very common. And they've looked and looked
- 7:38Speaker 5: and look, and they said, we'll go get you a title.
- 7:41Speaker 5: And I said, well, wait a minute before you go
- 7:42Speaker 5: down there to get that title.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Was there ever money owed on that car? Yes, but
- 7:48Speaker 4: he paid it off.
- 7:49Speaker 5: I said, I know, but the DMV doesn't know that
- 7:52Speaker 5: because you're gonna go down and stand that line to
- 7:54Speaker 5: get frustrated. You need a release of lean from that
- 7:59Speaker 5: lender to company the title application for a lost title.
- 8:04Speaker 5: Then they will know that the lean has been paid off.
- 8:07Speaker 5: He gets a little complicated, especially when we don't know
- 8:11Speaker 5: where Uncle Joe had to loan at. And so as
- 8:15Speaker 5: I walk people through this as I'm buying their cars,
- 8:19Speaker 5: now let's go outside the box. Let's take me out
- 8:22Speaker 5: of the scenario. Call that one eight hundred numbers and
- 8:24Speaker 5: see if they'll walk you through that. You think they care,
- 8:28Speaker 5: They don't care. Of course, They're just a number. They're
- 8:31Speaker 5: just playing that numbers game. And so that's where I
- 8:35Speaker 5: still feel that I'm different from all the other ones
- 8:39Speaker 5: because I have this thing called time or my side,
- 8:44Speaker 5: I have the essence of time, because you know, I'm
- 8:47Speaker 5: not being pushed to buy the buy or sell to sell.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Do you think that there's an element There was a
- 8:54Speaker 3: time during COVID when things were sort of upside down
- 8:57Speaker 3: and dealerships were finding a way to actually make a
- 8:59Speaker 3: snip an amount of money off of reselling the stock
- 9:02Speaker 3: that they repurchased. You know, that was a thing for
- 9:04Speaker 3: a while. I personally kind of felt like, and maybe
- 9:08Speaker 3: you make such an investment, there's no real way to
- 9:10Speaker 3: get into this. But I personally felt like that that
- 9:12Speaker 3: moment kind of moved one. But dealerships still tried to
- 9:17Speaker 3: make it work. And without that moment being exactly what
- 9:20Speaker 3: it was and things like that, you've had to change
- 9:23Speaker 3: exactly what that means to you, And it's not what
- 9:25Speaker 3: it started out as, which means that it just gets
- 9:28Speaker 3: less of what it was. It reminds me of. And
- 9:30Speaker 3: I don't think this is much of a stretches of
- 9:31Speaker 3: an analogy back we've talked about before. I used to run
- 9:34Speaker 3: a franchise of bookstores. I had a bunch of book
- 9:36Speaker 3: stores and stuff, and we started relatively early, just after
- 9:39Speaker 3: Amazon started, and we kind of mimicked what Amazon did
- 9:42Speaker 3: for a large portion of time.
- 9:43Speaker 4: We started with books.
- 9:44Speaker 3: We incorporated CDs and DVDs and games like that and
- 9:47Speaker 3: stuff like that later on, but our core business when
- 9:50Speaker 3: we first started is that we would still go out
- 9:52Speaker 3: to state sales, to library sales and different things like that,
- 9:56Speaker 3: and we would find not only bulk books, but we
- 9:58Speaker 3: were targeted to see books that had value and I
- 10:01Speaker 3: don't mean like you would find a thousand year old
- 10:03Speaker 3: copy of something. I mean like a textbook or a
- 10:06Speaker 3: nonfiction book of some kind, and you would get used
- 10:08Speaker 3: to this and know what had value. And when that
- 10:10Speaker 3: industry first started, that was extraordinarily profitable for us, and
- 10:13Speaker 3: we actually built our business off of that model. Or
- 10:16Speaker 3: we would go and find at library sales and estate
- 10:19Speaker 3: sales and goodwill and different places like that. We would
- 10:22Speaker 3: be able to go out and find some of these
- 10:24Speaker 3: things that we would put in our store also to
- 10:25Speaker 3: be able to sell online because we were doing that
- 10:27Speaker 3: at the time, and then it was profitable for us.
- 10:29Speaker 3: The problem that had we did this for a long time,
- 10:31Speaker 3: and the problem that happened is everybody started doing that.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Everybody started to be like going to a good will
- 10:37Speaker 3: and buying all the books and then reselling them on eBay,
- 10:39Speaker 3: and they weren't targeted. They would just buy everything because
- 10:42Speaker 3: they didn't have the specialized knowledge that we had. They
- 10:44Speaker 3: would just go in and get everything and then throw
- 10:46Speaker 3: everything at the wall see what they could turn around
- 10:47Speaker 3: on eBay and stuff like that. Eventually, the library systems
- 10:51Speaker 3: and stuff like that got smart, and so they stopped
- 10:54Speaker 3: putting out some of these books that were worth money.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Estates and stuff like that started being like, oh wait
- 10:57Speaker 3: a minute, we better run these through eBay before we
- 10:59Speaker 3: put them out in the estate selle because we might
- 11:01Speaker 3: get more money that way. Eventually it became extraordinarily non profitable,
- 11:06Speaker 3: unprofitable for us to do it, although that's how we
- 11:08Speaker 3: built our business because there was just too many people
- 11:11Speaker 3: that were in the game. However, we had some people
- 11:13Speaker 3: that were not really contractors for it, but they still
- 11:16Speaker 3: ran that type of business on the side, but they
- 11:18Speaker 3: didn't have any other overhead. I had a full business
- 11:20Speaker 3: by the time. I had tons of people that I
- 11:22Speaker 3: had to pay. I had a department, basically an acquisition
- 11:24Speaker 3: department that I paid to go out and do these things.
- 11:26Speaker 3: It became where I was losing money doing it because
- 11:28Speaker 3: I had overhead doing it. The people that would occasionally
- 11:30Speaker 3: still come to us that only did that as they're
- 11:32Speaker 3: living still did it quite fine, got by quite fine.
- 11:35Speaker 3: They could find the deals still because it was at
- 11:37Speaker 3: a much smaller level and they were still touching things.
- 11:39Speaker 3: They were still there where they could touch the industry
- 11:41Speaker 3: a little bit on that side of things, And that
- 11:44Speaker 3: seems almost kind of similar. It's like these people were
- 11:47Speaker 3: still able to do it because they were still on
- 11:49Speaker 3: that ground. They understood the specialization of the industry where
- 11:51Speaker 3: I had no choice but to grow, and really the
- 11:53Speaker 3: business didn't make a lot of sense for me anymore.
- 11:57Speaker 5: It's a moving target in COVID. Most people will say
- 12:02Speaker 5: that COVID changed the world, and it changed the world,
- 12:05Speaker 5: But I tell you what it did. It watered down relationships,
- 12:08Speaker 5: the relationships that I have built over the years. I
- 12:13Speaker 5: won't say I lost the relationships, but I wasn't as
- 12:19Speaker 5: needed as I once was, and dealerships grew. You know,
- 12:24Speaker 5: there's been a lot of by seals throughout the valley
- 12:27Speaker 5: and throughout the West Virginia and throughout the world. You know,
- 12:31Speaker 5: the dealerships acquiring other and they're putting them under I
- 12:34Speaker 5: call them rooftops where they have to have CFOs and
- 12:39Speaker 5: coos and you know, those were words that I never
- 12:42Speaker 5: heard of as I was being brought up in the
- 12:44Speaker 5: automobile world. You know, I knew most of the dealers
- 12:48Speaker 5: by name, played golf with them, played rickaball with them,
- 12:51Speaker 5: or they've been at my house, or I'd been at
- 12:52Speaker 5: their house. That's not like that anymore so that one
- 12:57Speaker 5: on one, and I've noticed this. You know, I'm pretty
- 12:59Speaker 5: involved starting to fred out there. I'm pretty involved in
- 13:03Speaker 5: watching sports on a local level. Those signs that I
- 13:11Speaker 5: used to see on the baseball field and the football field,
- 13:14Speaker 5: or the area around the school, the billboards or the
- 13:18Speaker 5: four but eight signs, I don't see car dealers. I
- 13:24Speaker 5: can't tell you how many teams I've sponsored. I sponsored
- 13:28Speaker 5: a little thing just because it's Harvey Payton's secretary. She's
- 13:32Speaker 5: been with Harvey a long time. I spons she had
- 13:36Speaker 5: all Horse paryed in Buffalo. Well that doesn't sound like much,
- 13:40Speaker 5: but in Buffalo, West Virginia, that's a lot. And they
- 13:44Speaker 5: had I think they raised a lot of money for
- 13:47Speaker 5: hospice and they had lots of horses, and it's an
- 13:50Speaker 5: all horse preyed on Buffalo, West Virginia. That means a lot.
- 13:55Speaker 5: I don't think Carvana or all these big stores are
- 13:59Speaker 5: going to go down there and advertise it. I provided music.
- 14:02Speaker 5: It's my way of paying back and saying thank you.
- 14:06Speaker 5: The little town of Buffalo is located across the river
- 14:09Speaker 5: from Winfield, where I live, where I went to high
- 14:11Speaker 5: school at And yes, I buy cars, and I bought
- 14:14Speaker 5: cars on that side of the river, and that side
- 14:16Speaker 5: of the river really doesn't get a lot of attention.
- 14:19Speaker 4: And when Moonie.
- 14:20Speaker 5: Asked me about the music, I said, sure, I'll take
- 14:23Speaker 5: care of him. Put a banner up, and I'm sure.
- 14:26Speaker 5: Unfortunately I wasn't there. I was in Pickens, West Virginia's
- 14:29Speaker 5: side to side writing, but I understand that they rolled
- 14:33Speaker 5: a red carpet out and it was quite, you know,
- 14:36Speaker 5: an ordeal. And once again, if you look around, you
- 14:40Speaker 5: do not see these large stores with their name on
- 14:45Speaker 5: the back of these jerseys. I still get inquiries about
- 14:52Speaker 5: donating money to small schools with small functions. I know
- 14:56Speaker 5: why I'm getting it. I'm a nobody. I'm almost not
- 15:00Speaker 5: existence because they can't get attention of the big person.
- 15:04Speaker 5: It's just those dollars are going digitally somewhere else. And
- 15:10Speaker 5: I'm just old school, and I guess they'll bury me.
- 15:12Speaker 5: I'll still do my own thing. And it doesn't work
- 15:16Speaker 5: for everybody. But when you have a circumstance and frustration
- 15:20Speaker 5: hits you, and it's very easy to do, you know,
- 15:23Speaker 5: trying to use a computer to do anything, if you're
- 15:26Speaker 5: north of fifty years old, or trying to converse with
- 15:30Speaker 5: somebody that is probably AI, it's call me, call me,
- 15:35Speaker 5: just like this lady did in Florida. She didn't quite
- 15:37Speaker 5: understand what this lean on this title of this jeet
- 15:41Speaker 5: that she bought was in some states, and that I
- 15:46Speaker 5: got off track there. Just meant to tell you what
- 15:48Speaker 5: you know how to do West Virginia. But in some
- 15:51Speaker 5: states that you carry the title with you and it
- 15:58Speaker 5: has the lean and you go to the courthouse, the
- 16:00Speaker 5: county seat when you pay your car off to get
- 16:04Speaker 5: a release of lean. Kentucky's that way, so because I've
- 16:08Speaker 5: sent many payoffs to the county seat in Kentucky, and
- 16:13Speaker 5: so it gets complicated if that's not what you have done,
- 16:19Speaker 5: and if you're out trying to solo and do it
- 16:21Speaker 5: by yourself. You can get in a position you don't
- 16:26Speaker 5: want to be and you have no one to call.
- 16:28Speaker 5: And as these larger stores get larger, and yes they
- 16:32Speaker 5: say they're going to buy cars, let there be a
- 16:35Speaker 5: situation or a problem and see how much.
- 16:37Speaker 4: Attention you get.
- 16:40Speaker 5: I at Least I have commercial property and I just
- 16:43Speaker 5: ended a lease with Trust. I least trust, which is
- 16:47Speaker 5: a large bank. It's a national bank. We just ended
- 16:51Speaker 5: and when they left it, they didn't leave the building.
- 16:55Speaker 5: I would say any condition that I would left it.
- 16:59Speaker 5: They shortly leave it and CONDI they got it. So
- 17:03Speaker 5: with some phone calls and pushing, they came and removed
- 17:07Speaker 5: some other items. I'm still not happy about what I'm
- 17:11Speaker 5: gonna have to do. Was caught to clean up. But
- 17:13Speaker 5: that's okay. I'm a big boy. The other company I
- 17:16Speaker 5: at least too, is a national health care company. They
- 17:20Speaker 5: are ending their least because they've been bought out by
- 17:22Speaker 5: another national health care company. But all of a sudden
- 17:25Speaker 5: now is when they sent me the termination notice, they
- 17:29Speaker 5: had to give me ninety days. As we get very
- 17:32Speaker 5: close to the ninety days, they realized they needed that building.
- 17:37Speaker 5: What for a while longer well. The company that I
- 17:40Speaker 5: could not ever get a hold of to end at
- 17:43Speaker 5: least to do the walkthrough. All of a sudden they
- 17:47Speaker 5: needed me.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Oh hey, hey, look here we are.
- 17:49Speaker 5: And started calling, and I finally got a hold of
- 17:54Speaker 5: someone that that we were okay, we could, we could share.
- 17:58Speaker 4: I mean we could, we could talk.
- 17:59Speaker 5: I think we're on the same page because I gave
- 18:02Speaker 5: them an extension. But the lady I was talking to
- 18:07Speaker 5: start talking over me and telling me what they're going
- 18:12Speaker 5: to do and how they're going to pay me, and
- 18:14Speaker 5: their lease had finalized, and I just let her go
- 18:18Speaker 5: through her spill because I couldn't get a word in.
- 18:20Speaker 5: I me every time I broke my mouth, she was
- 18:22Speaker 5: talking over me. And you do that with me, You
- 18:26Speaker 5: start telling me, I'll shut down on you and then
- 18:30Speaker 5: you'll figure it out. And so how, somehow I intercepted
- 18:36Speaker 5: an email between the lady I was not communicating well
- 18:40Speaker 5: with and the guy that I would think I was
- 18:42Speaker 5: communicating well with was She says he just won't return
- 18:46Speaker 5: my cause.
- 18:47Speaker 4: And I thought, imagine that.
- 18:51Speaker 5: I've called you for six months over the property IX
- 18:54Speaker 5: because you've not paid them. Goodness, But that's okay. We
- 18:56Speaker 5: got that resk because I found somebody that liked to talk.
- 19:00Speaker 5: And if you can talk and we can understand each other,
- 19:02Speaker 5: we're going to be good. Let me speak and then
- 19:04Speaker 5: you can speak, and we're going to find the happy
- 19:07Speaker 5: meeting point. But when you take that ball and you're
- 19:10Speaker 5: gonna tell me what you're gonna do with my building.
- 19:13Speaker 5: And I think people gets caught up in selling their cars.
- 19:16Speaker 5: They make the invite of the national company into their world,
- 19:21Speaker 5: you know, into their world, their little space on Beech
- 19:24Speaker 5: Street in Charleston, West Virginia, to sell mama's car. And
- 19:27Speaker 5: then here comes the big boys and they'll come in
- 19:32Speaker 5: and start dictating, and you catch the right person, they'll
- 19:34Speaker 5: overwhelm you and then they take all this information from you.
- 19:39Speaker 5: And once they're gone, they have all your information. And
- 19:43Speaker 5: that's where I once again, I'm different. There's not gonna
- 19:46Speaker 5: be information stored in a computer. It's gonna be you
- 19:49Speaker 5: and I. And if Grandma is involved and we have
- 19:52Speaker 5: to get a fire of attorney or someone's past, and
- 19:55Speaker 5: I've done that, I've went to the house. I went
- 19:57Speaker 5: to many houses. Now, I can't tell you how many
- 20:00Speaker 5: houses I went to with circumstances that involved let's just
- 20:06Speaker 5: say illness, death, divorced situations that we all have to
- 20:11Speaker 5: deal with we do not want to deal with. So
- 20:14Speaker 5: we got to slow it down because there's emotions of aldiness.
- 20:18Speaker 5: I mean, I can show you a text or my
- 20:20Speaker 5: phone a person thanking me for going to their mother's
- 20:24Speaker 5: house because it was the last raw, it's the last car.
- 20:29Speaker 5: And we I did a follow up. I said, is
- 20:31Speaker 5: she okay? And he said, wonderful. It will work out fine.
- 20:35Speaker 5: I don't think it would have worked out fine without
- 20:37Speaker 5: that one on one were sitting in that living room.
- 20:41Speaker 5: And I've done that and I'm accustomed to do that,
- 20:44Speaker 5: and I feel like it's my obligation I pay back
- 20:47Speaker 5: to society all those that helped me along my journey.
- 20:52Speaker 5: Gentleman owns a fireplace store in Cross Slane. Steve has
- 20:55Speaker 5: been there for gosh, I don't know, forty or fifty
- 20:58Speaker 5: years longer than I was in business. He was one
- 21:01Speaker 5: of the last customers we sold a car too. And
- 21:04Speaker 5: he called me last week and he said, is there
- 21:06Speaker 5: anybody doing what you did and that little niche you
- 21:10Speaker 5: had because I have an employee And I said, no, Steve,
- 21:13Speaker 5: there's not not like the way I did it because
- 21:15Speaker 5: I didn't chase price. I wanted quality, and I said
- 21:19Speaker 5: that's that. Unfortunately we have drifted away from that. And
- 21:24Speaker 5: once again I was small and I was like the
- 21:27Speaker 5: house flipper, but I didn't go by.
- 21:29Speaker 4: The cheap stuff. I bought the good stuff.
- 21:32Speaker 5: So when you got the house, the plumbing didn't leak
- 21:34Speaker 5: that I missed things.
- 21:35Speaker 4: Well, I'm sure it did.
- 21:37Speaker 5: But you had a really good cetubrations in your car,
- 21:39Speaker 5: and really good set ofators are in your car. And
- 21:42Speaker 5: there was where I stood different. And I think in
- 21:45Speaker 5: me buying cars, where I stand different is that I do.
- 21:49Speaker 5: I am a person. You know, I have connections in
- 21:52Speaker 5: this community. I have connections with this radio station, and
- 21:56Speaker 5: so I want to represent what little bit and I
- 22:00Speaker 5: have left to me in buying cars. I'm going to
- 22:03Speaker 5: treat it like I did day one. So I think
- 22:08Speaker 5: that's the difference when you get out to it, because
- 22:11Speaker 5: it's crowded. It's very crowded out here, and we buy
- 22:14Speaker 5: car lane.
- 22:15Speaker 4: That's right.
- 22:16Speaker 3: And you've been doing it longer than anybody else and
- 22:19Speaker 3: still can operate in that low overhead specialized area, which
- 22:23Speaker 3: really is what gives you an advantage. Not only the
- 22:25Speaker 3: depth of knowledge that goes back nearly forty years or more.
- 22:29Speaker 3: But also just the fact that you can operate on
- 22:32Speaker 3: your own time, doing your own thing, making the right situations,
- 22:35Speaker 3: which which is very unique. It gives you that ability
- 22:38Speaker 3: where you can operate only where you're comfortable, and that's
- 22:40Speaker 3: very appantageous not only for you, of course working in
- 22:43Speaker 3: your retirement, but the people that you choose to do
- 22:45Speaker 3: business with. That only helps them. Yes, there's no question
- 22:48Speaker 3: about that. Let's do this. Let's take a break. If

- 24:54Speaker 2: A good retirement takes planning. Let's get started today, Happy
- 25:00Speaker 2: Wednesday morning. This is Deale Cooper with a check of traffic.
- 25:02Speaker 2: We do have one occurrence we need to pass along
- 25:04Speaker 2: to you. It's just dense traffic in downtown Charleston, not
- 25:06Speaker 2: sixty four eastbound. All of the downtown exits right now
- 25:09Speaker 2: are experiencing some delays just from the dense traffic that
- 25:12Speaker 2: is coming into town. Also, dense fog has been developing
- 25:15Speaker 2: overnight and throughout the morning. Portions of the trywind to
- 25:19Speaker 2: work will have greatly reduced visibility to half them out
- 25:22Speaker 2: or less. So you want to be careful of the
- 25:24Speaker 2: fog as you're driving in this morning. Otherwise things are
- 25:26Speaker 2: moving okay. You just need to be careful head and
- 25:28Speaker 2: wherever you're going.
- 25:38Speaker 3: It is fourteen minutes at the top of the hour.
- 25:40Speaker 3: You are listening to ask the expert. Do you see
- 25:42Speaker 3: hs the voice of Charles, And we put out a
- 25:45Speaker 3: phone number for folks to give us a call. You're
- 25:47Speaker 3: more than welcome to gifts to call this morning three
- 25:48Speaker 3: zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight, and
- 25:50Speaker 3: we have some folks that did that. Suzanne is up first.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Richard will come up next. Susan, you're on the line
- 25:53Speaker 3: with Larry Dawson. Go ahead, right.
- 25:56Speaker 9: My name is Susanne. And back in twenty sixteen, my
- 26:01Speaker 9: husband passed away and I called Larry and we had
- 26:07Speaker 9: almost a brand new F one fifty were super nice,
- 26:11Speaker 9: and my son was driving a hand me down car.
- 26:16Speaker 9: It was a Volvo that was an older car and
- 26:19Speaker 9: because of expenses we needed to reduce it to one car.
- 26:25Speaker 9: And I called Larry and Larry said, sure, bring it
- 26:31Speaker 9: in and I brought him in and the Volvo was
- 26:37Speaker 9: too old for Larry to make any money on that.
- 26:40Speaker 9: He said, you know what, We're going to take both
- 26:42Speaker 9: of them. We're going to do this for you. We're
- 26:44Speaker 9: going to take care of you. And he just sent
- 26:47Speaker 9: the Volvo off to auction. He knew he couldn't do
- 26:50Speaker 9: anything with it, but he knew I needed help. And
- 26:54Speaker 9: in twenty twenty three, my father passed away. In twenty
- 26:58Speaker 9: four my mom needed to sell her car. The first
- 27:01Speaker 9: thing I said was, don't trade it in. Call Larry.
- 27:05Speaker 9: She called Larry and he gave her a wonderful price, Sport,
- 27:10Speaker 9: And I just wanted to assure everybody what Larry says.
- 27:14Speaker 9: He's a real thing.
- 27:16Speaker 5: Susane. Didn't I come to your house in Crystal Springs
- 27:19Speaker 5: about cad Like one time?
- 27:21Speaker 9: Yes, car too. I've forgotten about that, ye, Cadike.
- 27:26Speaker 5: It was in Hickorymeal and yeah, yeah, that's I remember.
- 27:35Speaker 4: So she's a wonderful lady.
- 27:37Speaker 5: And I knew her husband, and and thank you, thank
- 27:41Speaker 5: you very much, Susanne for saying that, because that's what
- 27:44Speaker 5: I do.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Do you know? That's well?
- 27:47Speaker 9: And I'd forgotten about the Cadillac. But yeah, you're You're
- 27:52Speaker 9: the real deal and I have told many of people
- 27:56Speaker 9: about you.
- 27:57Speaker 4: Okay, thanks Suzanne, thank you very.
- 27:59Speaker 9: Much, Thank you.
- 28:00Speaker 7: You have a good one, Bay Susan.
- 28:01Speaker 3: We appreciate that call. Thank you so much for calling in.
- 28:03Speaker 3: And we have Richard that's called in this morning as well.
- 28:04Speaker 3: That leaves a phone line open for you with three four,
- 28:06Speaker 3: five fifty eight fifty eight Richard of the morning. How
- 28:07Speaker 3: you doing this morning.
- 28:09Speaker 10: I'm well at the intersection of Ralph sixty and thirty
- 28:13Speaker 10: four at Hurricane on the southwest corner. It is a
- 28:17Speaker 10: tremendous automobile lot. Do you know what that operation's all about.
- 28:23Speaker 10: I'll listen on the radio. Thank you, Thanks Richard.
- 28:25Speaker 5: Yeah, that's co Part and co Part is a national
- 28:30Speaker 5: chain that does liquidations of mostly totaled vehicles. In other words,
- 28:37Speaker 5: let's just say you are an automobile accident. They totaled
- 28:40Speaker 5: your car. They will pick your car up and that's
- 28:43Speaker 5: the closest co Part and they take them there and
- 28:47Speaker 5: co Part runs a salvage auction. In other words, you
- 28:51Speaker 5: can go on line as a dealer and buy and
- 28:55Speaker 5: that maybe as an individual. I don't exclusively say dealer.
- 28:59Speaker 5: But I am stood with Copart and I could go
- 29:02Speaker 5: down there. And it's not that I can't remember if
- 29:06Speaker 5: I've ever sent a car there that I bought that
- 29:08Speaker 5: was deemed wrecked or totaled.
- 29:11Speaker 4: But he's right.
- 29:12Speaker 5: It's it's huge, and he's exactly right in the location.
- 29:17Speaker 5: And it's called co Part.
- 29:18Speaker 4: But it is a national.
- 29:19Speaker 5: Company and they do liquidations, fire car bent on, fire,
- 29:25Speaker 5: flood or just an automobile accident. But that's the name
- 29:29Speaker 5: of the company's coat. It's called co Part. Hey, you
- 29:32Speaker 5: called the right guy to find out. Larry knew what
- 29:34Speaker 5: it was.
- 29:35Speaker 3: By the way, Larry Dawson, you can get ahold of
- 29:37Speaker 3: Larry if you have any questions things that we talked
- 29:39Speaker 3: about on the show. If you're looking at maybe selling
- 29:41Speaker 3: a vehicle, threes are four five, four five zero two
- 29:43Speaker 3: one one. Threes are four five, four, five zero two
- 29:46Speaker 3: one one For Larry Dawson, he buys cars.
- 29:48Speaker 5: Still tell you a quick story, and it happened right
- 29:50Speaker 5: here in this station. The Mayor Winfield is a very
- 29:54Speaker 5: good friend of mine. Unfortunately he lost his father. Father
- 29:59Speaker 5: had a truck called me about evaluation. I shared with
- 30:02Speaker 5: him what I thought went by city hall there set
- 30:05Speaker 5: the truck. I wheeled in there. I was going to
- 30:07Speaker 5: the farm. Called Randy and he said, hey, I just
- 30:09Speaker 5: don't leave up. I'm just like two minutes away.
- 30:12Speaker 4: Pulled in.
- 30:12Speaker 5: He and I talked, had a nice truck, and I said,
- 30:17Speaker 5: my neighbor, which is rich the realtor, is looking for
- 30:23Speaker 5: a truck for his stepson.
- 30:25Speaker 4: Said here's his number. You might call him.
- 30:27Speaker 8: Now.
- 30:28Speaker 5: I have nothing in this, okay. And other than my
- 30:32Speaker 5: neighbors said hey, here, I want to find a truck
- 30:35Speaker 5: my son that you know, and I said okay. Then
- 30:37Speaker 5: I saw the mayor's and I thought, well, I'll put
- 30:38Speaker 5: these two together. Well, as I was telling this story
- 30:43Speaker 5: about a month ago, and I mentioned rich Therilder, Richie
- 30:47Speaker 5: Klein and the mayor and the truck. There's a lawyer
- 30:53Speaker 5: and Timmy Lafon heard it me talking about it in Charleston. Well,
- 30:57Speaker 5: he's our city attorney, I said, on the board. And
- 31:00Speaker 5: well in Winfield and Nitro, so lawyer Lafawn calls Mayor
- 31:07Speaker 5: Bart and says, hey, that truck. He said, I want
- 31:10Speaker 5: to you know, I want to buy the truck. And
- 31:12Speaker 5: he said, well, how do you even know about it?
- 31:14Speaker 4: Larry Dawson.
- 31:17Speaker 5: So if you share with me, I might share it
- 31:20Speaker 5: with someone else that's a Byron. Then once again I
- 31:23Speaker 5: have nothing in this now. Mayor Bert sold the truck.
- 31:26Speaker 5: It was his father's and Lawyer la Fawn bought it
- 31:29Speaker 5: which he needed for whatever reason, and Larry was the messenger.
- 31:35Speaker 5: Larry worked free on that one. But maybe Lawyer Lafawn
- 31:39Speaker 5: or Mayor Bart will have one next time that I'm
- 31:42Speaker 5: going to be able to buy. Actually, I pulled in
- 31:45Speaker 5: to uh gus, I've got look in the truck and
- 31:47Speaker 5: I thought, you know, somewhere I know somebody.
- 31:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I might buy that truck.
- 31:51Speaker 5: And Randy doesn't even know this that I pulled in
- 31:54Speaker 5: there the second time only to find this story out
- 31:58Speaker 5: that I think his name is Tim Lafawn. Is Larry
- 32:01Speaker 5: Lafaun's brother or cousin was brother. I think Larry's a
- 32:05Speaker 5: retired auto dealer, but he You never know when you
- 32:10Speaker 5: when you share information, especially with the old car guy,
- 32:13Speaker 5: the old guy that hangs around tutors.
- 32:17Speaker 4: I'm that guy now. Now, one thing I'm not gonna be.
- 32:19Speaker 5: I'm not going to be the guy that gets on
- 32:21Speaker 5: the fake book and complain about everything. I just laugh
- 32:24Speaker 5: and take a pretty picture of Pickings, West Virginia.
- 32:27Speaker 4: You know, and put on there. But that's what I do.
- 32:30Speaker 5: I'm kind of the information highway, kind of the car guy.
- 32:33Speaker 5: I'm not gonna try to sell your car. I'm gonna
- 32:35Speaker 5: try to buy your car. And if I can't buy
- 32:37Speaker 5: your car, I might know somebody wants to buy your car,
- 32:39Speaker 5: and I can't buy them all, especially today, you know,
- 32:43Speaker 5: I'm just a one on one guy. Normally I spot
- 32:45Speaker 5: a car and and uh, over the years, I have
- 32:49Speaker 5: a rollodex full of dealers that one dealer that might
- 32:55Speaker 5: excel in buying this one certain brand or one certain
- 32:58Speaker 5: price French car I know here right, and then I
- 33:01Speaker 5: have the lower end guy and the higher end guy.
- 33:03Speaker 5: And so it's all in my mind. I mean, if
- 33:06Speaker 5: I cracked my head hoping one day all these little
- 33:09Speaker 5: cars are going around, I'm gonna bleed out in cars.
- 33:12Speaker 9: Well.
- 33:12Speaker 3: One of the things that really strikes me when you
- 33:13Speaker 3: talk about this though, you know, back in the you know,
- 33:15Speaker 3: when I was growing up and when people wanted to
- 33:18Speaker 3: you know, they had their car they paid off. Maybe
- 33:20Speaker 3: it was their kid's car that they finally paid off,
- 33:22Speaker 3: or or the older sister gave her younger brother her car,
- 33:25Speaker 3: and then he decided he was going to sell that
- 33:27Speaker 3: to turn around and buy another car. Whatever it might be,
- 33:29Speaker 3: that this stuff used to happen all the time, and
- 33:31Speaker 3: there was nothing to stick a sign in the in
- 33:33Speaker 3: the in the windshield. Maybe you would ask a friend
- 33:35Speaker 3: of yours whose dad owned a local business if you
- 33:38Speaker 3: could pull it into the parking lot there or something
- 33:39Speaker 3: like that and put a phone number on it for
- 33:41Speaker 3: people to uh to give you a call to be
- 33:43Speaker 3: interested in the vehicle. Absolutely nothing wrong with that in concept,
- 33:46Speaker 3: there's nothing wrong with it today. The problem is is
- 33:49Speaker 3: number one, the people that are out looking at that
- 33:51Speaker 3: car aren't necessarily the person that needs the car. They're
- 33:53Speaker 3: they're looking for numbers of people to call, and then
- 33:55Speaker 3: they're going to come and get you and try to
- 33:57Speaker 3: broke her a deal with you. And they're going to
- 33:58Speaker 3: try to pin into this, and pinion to that and
- 34:00Speaker 3: and and try to talk you into something because they're
- 34:03Speaker 3: gonna be dangling a you know, where they're claimed to
- 34:05Speaker 3: be a check in front of you. Who knows if
- 34:06Speaker 3: it's going to clear or not, but that's what they're
- 34:07Speaker 3: going to claim. It's it's less authentic than it used
- 34:10Speaker 3: to be. It used to be the person that calls.
- 34:11Speaker 3: It was the person that wanted the car, and that's
- 34:13Speaker 3: who you still are. You're still the guy that wants
- 34:14Speaker 3: the car. You're not trying to act, and you're not
- 34:17Speaker 3: trying to to, uh, to be the bigger company that's
- 34:19Speaker 3: coming in and taking all the cars. You know, I
- 34:21Speaker 3: got to have them all. You know, you're still acting
- 34:23Speaker 3: on a on a one on one basis. You are
- 34:25Speaker 3: exactly that person that if you're contacting that person because
- 34:28Speaker 3: you want the car. And it's just different in that
- 34:30Speaker 3: way like it used to be, rather than today where
- 34:33Speaker 3: people are trying to well, let's go get all the
- 34:35Speaker 3: cars and we can bring them on our lot and
- 34:36Speaker 3: we can sell them, and then we can put a
- 34:38Speaker 3: little bit of money into this and sell it for
- 34:39Speaker 3: this much more and so on and so forth. It's
- 34:41Speaker 3: just and the expansion of it being bigger, it's made
- 34:44Speaker 3: it less authentic and uh, it's harder to find the
- 34:47Speaker 3: solid deals.
- 34:49Speaker 5: You probably are aware of this that these scammers or
- 34:57Speaker 5: telemarkers can sp I don't know if this is the
- 35:00Speaker 5: right word. They can spoof the number to make it
- 35:03Speaker 5: look like the phone call is originating from whatever business.
- 35:07Speaker 3: Hey, they can make it look like it's coming from
- 35:08Speaker 3: your own number. Yeah yeah, oh yeah, they can do
- 35:10Speaker 3: whatever number they want.
- 35:12Speaker 5: In the last day's or earth of anyone, we have
- 35:17Speaker 5: to use this thing called a funeral unfortunately. And I
- 35:21Speaker 5: want to leave this vegue because this happened to a
- 35:25Speaker 5: friend of mine that they got to follow up call
- 35:28Speaker 5: from the funeral home. They thought they just used.
- 35:33Speaker 11: Needing immediate payment, and an immediate payment was made out
- 35:39Speaker 11: of maybe not having all their wits together at that moment.
- 35:45Speaker 4: Same way with.
- 35:46Speaker 3: Wow, that is how disaster is that somebody who's going
- 35:49Speaker 3: through such grief?
- 35:50Speaker 4: And then oh my goodness, so you.
- 35:52Speaker 5: Better be careful when you reach out and then they
- 35:56Speaker 5: contact you back.
- 35:57Speaker 4: Now, how do you know? How do you know? That's
- 36:01Speaker 4: the company with me?
- 36:04Speaker 5: You can take You can get a cell phone number
- 36:06Speaker 5: that I've had since nineteen eighty nine. You can google it.
- 36:09Speaker 5: It will show you my house. I'm not going nowhere,
- 36:13Speaker 5: And that's what I try to slow people down. Once again.
- 36:17Speaker 5: I can't buy them all. I'm not going to try to.
- 36:19Speaker 5: I just get one here and there and have something
- 36:22Speaker 5: to do. I've helped so many people. But be careful
- 36:26Speaker 5: when you reach out, especially.
- 36:28Speaker 3: When you give your Yeah, if you're online and you're like, oh,
- 36:31Speaker 3: maybe somebody wants to buy my car. Because all they're doing,
- 36:35Speaker 3: I mean, this is isn't real secret, but they're just
- 36:37Speaker 3: collecting your information, putting it on a list and selling
- 36:40Speaker 3: it to people. That's why suddenly you get one hundred
- 36:42Speaker 3: email contacts and phone numbers you don't recognize calling in
- 36:45Speaker 3: stuff like that. You just voluntarily gave your information to
- 36:49Speaker 3: a list broker. I mean, that's the bottom line what happened, and.
- 36:52Speaker 5: They sell off. People are intriggued when they have conversation
- 36:56Speaker 5: or if they google one thing like cowboy boots. Maybe
- 37:00Speaker 5: I'm wanted a new pair of cowboy boots. Look how
- 37:02Speaker 5: many times it will pop up on your phone. Oh yeah,
- 37:05Speaker 5: And you better be careful when you especially in that
- 37:09Speaker 5: world where it involves money and merchandise, because that money
- 37:14Speaker 5: and that merchandise it could be different than what you
- 37:17Speaker 5: think it is. And you know, there's temptation. That didn't
- 37:23Speaker 5: pt Barms say there was a full born every.
- 37:25Speaker 4: Day, and you got to be careful.
- 37:28Speaker 5: They know the weakness and they you know you can
- 37:32Speaker 5: go once again, you can google my number.
- 37:35Speaker 4: It will tell you my age.
- 37:37Speaker 5: I mean, I have no secrets, but I'm not a
- 37:39Speaker 5: young spring checking anylong. You know, I'm sixty seven years old.
- 37:43Speaker 5: And as I age, they know that. Predators know that.
- 37:48Speaker 5: You know, where do you become a week in life
- 37:51Speaker 5: or the end of it? And not only mentally, but physically.
- 37:56Speaker 5: And I think sometimes maybe a lot of times, that's
- 38:00Speaker 5: taking advantage.
- 38:01Speaker 4: Other Oh sure it is.
- 38:02Speaker 3: There's an entire industry out there that's, as we speak,
- 38:05Speaker 3: creating customized fingerprints for basically every single person you meet
- 38:09Speaker 3: everybody else. And I don't mean like actual fingerprints, I
- 38:13Speaker 3: mean your digital fingerprint. What you'll be able to do
- 38:15Speaker 3: is you'll be able to you know, how all this
- 38:16Speaker 3: data that we give people are supposed to be anonymized.
- 38:19Speaker 3: You know that you can't identify anybody. Well, what's going
- 38:22Speaker 3: to be happening soon is you're going to be able
- 38:24Speaker 3: to match up specific tailored ads and things like that
- 38:27Speaker 3: for a particular person. I mean you see that more
- 38:30Speaker 3: in a general sense now, but I mean this kind
- 38:33Speaker 3: of data that's being collected and being sold off not
- 38:35Speaker 3: only to commercial companies but to the government and stuff
- 38:38Speaker 3: like that. It's basically soial security data, your IRS data,
- 38:41Speaker 3: your medical data. I mean all these things are now
- 38:43Speaker 3: being tied into one location and people can buy that information.
- 38:47Speaker 3: You're going to have stuff that is just so customly
- 38:50Speaker 3: tailored to exploit. It's just it's a scary time for
- 38:53Speaker 3: those types of things.
- 38:54Speaker 5: Well, look happened Calvin Coalty. Yeah, I mean that's elected official.
- 39:00Speaker 5: Fish will go out and do that. What do you
- 39:02Speaker 5: think somebody that you're giving information?
- 39:04Speaker 3: That's the truth, man, that's Larry Dawson. Larry Dawson's auto
- 39:07Speaker 3: sells and you can find Larry up.
