- 0:45Welcome back. He doesn't know what's up,
- 0:52buddy. How you doing?
- 0:55Hey buddy. As usually, I'm here at the, I'm
- 1:02here at my mom's house, rocking in the kitchen, had to find the
- 1:07the best spot for the, the Wi-Fi here on the downstairs.
- 1:10So I think I'm good here. We'll, we'll see how it goes.
- 1:13Hopefully, we don't have any technical difficulties As We
- 1:16Roll Along here. If not, I'll just keep talking
- 1:19until you get back in. There we go right there.
- 1:22He, I think I can do that, but we'll be good.
- 1:26What we're both on break. We are not going to do any work
- 1:30until January 3rd. So full watching bowl season
- 1:34watching the Hokies tonight up here. 27:27, please me and we
- 1:41have one. Let's download Braun.
- 1:45Yeah, it's a lot to unpack tonight.
- 1:48We've got a lot of stuff. We're going to talk about with
- 1:51the bowls, some of the opt-outs that we're dealing with.
- 1:54We're going to do some pickles later, but we're going to lead
- 1:57off with something that I've been kind of looking forward to
- 2:02Yep. We're going to be leading off
- 2:03tonight guys with Keith Moon conlon offensive lineman in
- 2:08state and Brian's former offensive line coach down at
- 2:12Hampton Sydney and just so you guys kind of know the background
- 2:16on key. He's won three birds that played
- 2:19for paternal and Penn State who was a starter on the rotational.
- 2:24He was a starter on the 1994 undefeated team for me and
- 2:29Brian. Again, that's the ages we were
- 2:30starting to get in the sports. . Collins, kijana, Carter.
- 2:34Bobby. Engram Kyle.
- 2:36Brady unbelievable. All Big Ten in 1995.
- 2:41He got drafted to 96 out of for the offensive lineman from Penn
- 2:45State in the sixth round by bronzed Colts.
- 2:48So even more of a place in Bryant artist coach and he
- 2:51played for his favorite team on did after retiring.
- 2:54As some neck injuries where we went back into coaching for some
- 2:57years, again for Brian and then he moved back to Penn State
- 3:01where He hosts a weekly two times a week radio show talking
- 3:06about Penn State football. So for us or for Brian, it was
- 3:10just like my old coach does something up here, let's get him
- 3:13on. Let's talk about prime little
- 3:15bit of everything. So Why not?
- 3:18Let you introduce? And all right, here we go, guys.
- 3:21He's coached him, but you guys can call him goon.
- 3:24It's Keith goon conlon. What's going on, fellas?
- 3:28How are you good? How you doing tonight coach?
- 3:32Good, buddy. How are you?
- 3:33Don't call me coach and call me Keith.
- 3:35Call me goon, where we like, I told you what had been sitting.
- 3:39If I can call Joe Paterno Joe, you can call me Keith.
- 3:44Have you always been a long time?
- 3:46And I appreciate you coming home with us.
- 3:48It's been, it's been a kind of a wild ride for us as hokey fans
- 3:52the last few weeks. So kind of good to get a little
- 3:55bit of the back story here, on our, on our guy pry.
- 4:00Yeah, and you guys got a good one.
- 4:02I he's always loved his, his defense the way he coached, how
- 4:07his kids played and, you know, historically were up here where
- 4:11linebacker you. And we could pepper in a lot of
- 4:13good defense alignment, but we really never really had like
- 4:16great defensive backs here. I know my friends are going to
- 4:20call me, pissed off screaming at me but oh well we didn't have we
- 4:24don't have that many guys going to the NFL as defensive backs
- 4:26right now, but Brett really changed.
- 4:29It was the coach I really changed and did a great job with
- 4:34a coach Pride was people want to come to say Pride, that's what I
- 4:38would call and pry but I do know want to call him Coach prize.
- 4:41So coach bride was he was the the he was there all throughout
- 4:47coach Franklin's career here and he's been the man as a defensive
- 4:51coordinator for the last few years and you guys have got no
- 4:54him know his scheme. They played well they flourished
- 4:58under it. Where's our Our offense has
- 5:00really fluttered the last four years because you know, again,
- 5:03we've had four offensive coordinators of four years and
- 5:06that would coach pride get in there and always being that
- 5:08stalwart all defense knowing you're going to make some plays
- 5:12and you know as a Penn State fan and as an alumni as a former
- 5:16football player you know I'm sort of pissed off at last
- 5:20season because we had a hell of a defense that got ruined
- 5:23because our offense sucked. You know we couldn't we couldn't
- 5:26get we couldn't do anything on offense and you wasted at you
- 5:29Instead of unbelievable defensive year of being the
- 5:33season that they had and the stats that they had were
- 5:37unbelievable. I mean, we, I mean, I want to
- 5:39throw up right now. We lost to an Illinois team.
- 5:43Okay, we had a nine overtime game, we couldn't get three
- 5:46yards after the second overtime. You had to go for two.
- 5:50We had six chances and we never got three yards coach prize
- 5:54defense gave up 10 points. That game hen a whole game as as
- 6:00bad as our offense was Illinois. Is it exactly you know that I'm
- 6:04not the 1940 lion running around out there but you know his
- 6:08defense kept them in that game and the fact that they couldn't
- 6:11punch one of those plays. In to give them the victory
- 6:14really hurt. And was just, you know, that was
- 6:17the beginning of the end of my opinion for this season up here
- 6:21and you know where it's parked. Big Boy, come on now, you know
- 6:23where it starts it starts up front and they're not they're
- 6:26not getting the horses up front so we can run the ball.
- 6:28So our quarterback has no time to throw the ball because
- 6:31they're not they're not they don't fear our run games.
- 6:34So you know it's put it's been a tough few years because our
- 6:38offensive line is not really flourished or progressed the way
- 6:42in the Of our team has. I mean we have I mean
- 6:46historically you think of Penn State you think of offensive
- 6:49linemen linebackers a defect like that and you know failed
- 6:52running backs. I mean that's where the NFL was.
- 6:54I mean there was a lot of guys going there fell but we were
- 6:56pumping 10, 15 guys. In the year, in the NFL we are
- 7:01pumping more skilled players in. I mean, I tell a story all the
- 7:05time when I got to Penn State out of there was five recruiting
- 7:08classes. I was my class and therefore
- 7:10above us. 16 guys. My offensive line were in went
- 7:14to the NFL 16. It's not of like 25 guys.
- 7:19I mean, the nowadays you get to in the NFL in three classes,
- 7:23you're happy, you know, and that's where it's changed
- 7:26because our I mean up here we're putting a ton of skill players.
- 7:31In the NFL, we have more wide receivers in the NFL right now.
- 7:34I think we do offensive lineman and that's not what we are, what
- 7:37we were and you know again it goes back to the boys up front.
- 7:42They got to get it done for me. if we're going, if we're going
- 7:43to succeed on offense, I got theories and I think that it's
- 7:49you're not practice that. I mean, you know, you don't
- 7:51probably use the coach. I didn't we did we did beat the
- 7:54tar out of you guys but we practice we hit.
- 7:57I mean nowadays, you know, you can't have back-to-back food,
- 8:00you can't have back-to-back two-a-days and camps, you can't
- 8:03you know have back-to-back full pad practices where you're going
- 8:05to go live against the defense a line and then linebackers a
- 8:09front seven or scrimmage you.you're not having that.
- 8:12Now even in the NFL, you know, you don't have good offense, a
- 8:15lot of plants or third or fourth Week of the year.
- 8:17And that is, you know, it's worked its way down into the
- 8:22college ranks. And, you know, I don't know if
- 8:25you've ever done any kind of college recruiting but literally
- 8:28the hardest thing to do in college is recruiting offensive
- 8:30lineman because you got a guy who's my size or six foot eight,
- 8:33three hundred pound or 225 pounds in high school.
- 8:37You know, I can just pick it up and throw them around, you know,
- 8:39you don't know how athletic, I even I was athletic.
- 8:42That's why I got all scholarships but you didn't know
- 8:44if I was top if I was good because I I was playing against
- 8:47guys were much smaller than me. Yeah and it's so hard to recruit
- 8:51Talent right now because it is an offensive lineman that good
- 8:55or are they just that much bigger than anybody else?
- 8:57So they get to college. Now, you're going to get
- 8:59somebody your own size. You're going to smack you in the
- 9:01teeth. And that's how you're going to
- 9:02react to that. Absolutely.
- 9:06It is something you're singing every, every year every year,
- 9:09and you talk about the NFL, they don't do the full practices
- 9:12anymore during the week. So I mean, I think we could go
- 9:15on about this for hours. So, go ahead, Brian book.
- 9:18The key thing again, we're going to have him back on to talk
- 9:21about offensive line that you guys get deep into it.
- 9:24So I'm going to pull us back in. That's what Brian has me here
- 9:26for Keith. Let's, let's talk about this
- 9:30during your tenure and during his tenure at Penn State, did
- 9:33you ever have an opportunity? To actually interview prop for
- 9:35your show. I never really interview them.
- 9:38We don't want out. I don't really do all that.
- 9:40I haven't spent much time with him.
- 9:44Golf course, just going to do celebrity stuff like that and
- 9:48you know just sitting there picking his brain, he's a
- 9:50down-to-earth guy. I love the hell out of him
- 9:52because he is honest and sincere.
- 9:54I did I one thing I have noticed about him and I don't know if
- 9:58it's the defensive line that does it, but they rotate the
- 10:01hell out of a play about 12 to 15 guys up front of the front
- 10:04seven. They really do.
- 10:06I mean that was As an offensive lineman, it was always the
- 10:10hardest thing to do was to go against the player who bought it
- 10:13every play, you know, you got some slobs out there who, you
- 10:17know, would take a playoff here or there and, you know, you got
- 10:21a guy who is coming in fresh every third play.
- 10:25He's going to go 110 miles an hour.
- 10:27And that's the hardest guys to block and hardest guys that go
- 10:29again. So, expect not to have one that
- 10:33type of guy expect to have, he's going to be grooming one or two
- 10:36or three of those guys. And he loves the defensive end
- 10:39pressure and then the big the big guys in the middle get the
- 10:42little bit of push up front and cleaning up the quarterbacks,
- 10:44but I got to go back. He loves bringing pressure, I
- 10:47mean I don't think Penn State is Corner Blitz than in the 150
- 10:51years into playing football as much as they have the last two
- 10:53or three years, that is a staple of a bud.
- 10:57And if you're the boundary Corner in that defense be ready
- 11:01because you have every responsibility but her bring it.
- 11:04Yeah. I mean and I love that because
- 11:09when you again you you just made me ask you about bringing six.
- 11:13It sounds like his adjustment beat.
- 11:14We're going to bring seven, eventually, you're not going to
- 11:17have enough to walk, cause we're going to pop your quarterback or
- 11:20you're going to make a mistake, which is again, I think that's
- 11:24what we dealt with for so long and he's last few years with but
- 11:29not being there. Me and Brian had the absolute
- 11:32privilege of going to buzz last game.
- 11:35In Lane Stadium, where he pitched a shutout against Pitt,
- 11:3828, nothing in the rain in. It was Mastery that day so it
- 11:44was it was wild to see, but let me ask this And you've kind of
- 11:51hit on it, so I think I know where you're going to go with
- 11:53it. How does he handle when
- 11:55adversity is when you're not winning big Ten's and go in the
- 11:58Rose Bowl kind of like this season.
- 12:00Because even though his defense was lights out, I mean, how he
- 12:05held down Ohio State. I watched a little bit of that
- 12:08game, how he held down, that offense was absolutely
- 12:11impressive, but, but when it's adversity in, like you say, you
- 12:16give up 10 points to Illinois, you stop them all, but one time
- 12:19and Over time. What's he like when that
- 12:23happens? What is it that they didn't quit
- 12:26the whole year in my opinion. There was there were certain
- 12:28players that I suspected quit but as a whole, those guys
- 12:32played in, you know, anybody who's played football in the
- 12:36past and if you, if you were so dominant on one side of the
- 12:40ball, IE when I was playing for Penn State, our offense was
- 12:44dominant. So, you know, we would if we
- 12:48were It would be a little bit of angst going on amongst the
- 12:52offense and the defense a little bit.
- 12:54I mean, the fact that they even played in one games after that,
- 12:58Illinois, game one that defense should have.
- 13:01They literally should have been fighting the offense in the
- 13:03locker room at halftime in my opinion.
- 13:06You know how, you know what I'm talking about.
- 13:07And if it's like yeah we'll just do us a favor.
- 13:10We're Bustin. Our asses out here.
- 13:12Help us out. Get a score or give me a
- 13:14touchdown. Give me a field goal.
- 13:15Hold of, you know, this and them.
- 13:18So the fact that he kept those guys playing as hard as they
- 13:21did, even going into that Ohio State game, you know, that was
- 13:24coming off of a horrible, two or three game span versus Iowa
- 13:28versus Illinois and just a bad bad, bad losses, but to have
- 13:32them recoup and go out there and play the way they did was great,
- 13:36having Michigan. They were beating Michigan until
- 13:38the last three minutes of that game.
- 13:40And, you know, it's it was nothing to do with, you know, it
- 13:43was a full key type of play that beat us and that Michigan beat
- 13:46us with Wasn't anything to do with them, but he kept those
- 13:50guys playing hard all year even when our offense was so inept
- 13:54and he kept those guys going even again like yeah there
- 14:01should have been angst amongst the offense and the defense and
- 14:03I you know I didn't see it on the sidelines or I didn't see it
- 14:07on television or hear anything about it.
- 14:10But I know what I would have done if I was a defensive player
- 14:12and we had just lost an eye, never tell you to get into it, a
- 14:162117 mind, you know, There Will Be Blood in the locker room and
- 14:19it wouldn't just be me would be all of us.
- 14:21Yeah, yeah it's wild. I've been holding a locker room
- 14:26together. Like that is definitely has to
- 14:28be hard especially with. I mean we experienced some of
- 14:31that with the with the Hokies this year.
- 14:34You know, the season kind of started off defense was playing
- 14:36well offense, couldn't get it going in towards the end defense
- 14:40started, LED things away offense settled in a little bit on the
- 14:43ground game, but the guys kept fighting, I I'll credit JC with
- 14:49after Fuente was like go kind of holding that locker room
- 14:51together and you know going into the Commonwealth cup and getting
- 14:54one from UVA there to close things out.
- 14:57But let's talk about something else a little bit here.
- 14:59You know, we talked about adversity.
- 15:01How does how does pry handle the the success is he more kind of
- 15:06even Keel? Or does he kind of let his
- 15:07emotions hang out there like, we known Blood Falls every past?
- 15:11But every experience I've ever had with him was he was even
- 15:13kill the whole time. He could have been You know,
- 15:15maybe celebrating that beer or an extra beer or two after a
- 15:19game here and there, but it was always about getting on the next
- 15:23game. I'm moving on.
- 15:24It was after a bad loss that I can.
- 15:26We got to get moving on. You can't dwell on your losses,
- 15:29too much. You can't dwell on your wins as
- 15:30much. So, yeah, I noticed one thing
- 15:33about Coach, Frank of the his staff up here, which we'd ever
- 15:35really had a pair of these guys are Dynamic recruiters, and they
- 15:39coach Frey is getting a lot, they're here and they're going
- 15:42to find these. The Superstar players had to go
- 15:44to fit there. Program, you know, and they're
- 15:47going to be a fresh program and are going to want, you know,
- 15:49they're going to want to play their guy, so he's going to have
- 15:52very good recruiting classes. The next few years because
- 15:55wanting works his tail off at at recruiting.
- 15:57He's going to bring the guys in and guys are going to go there
- 16:00and play because they want to play for.
- 16:01You know, he said I'm going to play his first or second year
- 16:04guys that he recruited type of thing.
- 16:06You know you never want to think that but it's sort of true, you
- 16:09know, if there's a guy been there for four years, we've got
- 16:12one more year left, you know, he could help you go out in this.
- 16:15Scheme. But, you know, you want.
- 16:16Sure. It's the future you're worried
- 16:18about and I think that's what his biggest asset is that he can
- 16:23recruit. He can coach and these guys play
- 16:25hard for him. Yeah, that's probably doubly
- 16:28true for the Hokies because we've had so many opt-outs here
- 16:31and some transfer portal issues in the past.
- 16:34We've got probably 19 guys, on the current roster between
- 16:38opt-outs and seniors and everything else that are kind of
- 16:42moving out of the program coming in, Schools.
- 16:46We're going to have the young guys are going to have
- 16:48opportunities, especially, guys that are enrolled.
- 16:50We got, I think 22 in this class.
- 16:52Half of them are enrolling early.
- 16:55So we're going to have guys that are going to get some
- 16:57opportunity in the in the spring here, too.
- 16:59So it'll be nice to see him. Some of those guys that he had a
- 17:02roulette. Cause I know a couple of the
- 17:03guys that that were in our class, he had looked at when he
- 17:07was at Penn State Gunner, Givens was probably the biggest one
- 17:12there. Yeah, I mean the whole transfer
- 17:16portal thing. I mean, I talked about the coach
- 17:18Franklin has bought in the number of six recruiting class
- 17:20in the country. You know, and he's had top ten,
- 17:23the last three or four years so it's like a whole transfer
- 17:26portal. It's he has to recruit and then
- 17:29you know, coach will learn good for.
- 17:30I will learn this and he's doing it now but you literally read
- 17:34recruiting your team every year and that's just it's just such a
- 17:38different game. Than we know that you guys grew
- 17:43up at that. I played in you guys play in and
- 17:45it's nowhere even close and, you know, to get off the ride, my
- 17:50horse hair a little bit. And say, you know, after Rio,
- 17:54the signing day Fiasco down at Jackson, State Florida State,
- 17:57you know, after a 1.5 million dollar deals remote from a
- 18:01Barstool Sports transfer, you know, a kid drops Florida State
- 18:05to go to Jackson State. Okay, let's try if you want to
- 18:08go there. That's fine.
- 18:08But it was money that made him go there.
- 18:10R. So the days of us experiencing
- 18:12and loving college football, that you know, 5, 10, 15, 20,
- 18:1630, 40 years ago. Those days are over, man, and
- 18:19it's sad to think about what this is, the where it is, this
- 18:23is where we are at right now, and you got a young coach right
- 18:27now. Who understands the game,
- 18:28understand recruiting, he's dynamic as hell.
- 18:30So he will take advantage that transfer portal and bring
- 18:33players it for you guys. And I think I'm going to go
- 18:36Keith what you just said about using the transfer portal and
- 18:39having his guys Is many is where does the Cobra thing wasn't guys
- 18:44getting extra years and having more scholarships?
- 18:46But it's Brian has already said, as many guys leaving Coach
- 18:49Brown, is going to be actually, he's going to be able to go to
- 18:52the portal and find his guys, you know, he's going to be able
- 18:55to say I recruited this kid. Two years ago, he went to
- 18:59Michigan State, but now he's in the portal.
- 19:01I'm picking up my phone. I'm calling them because you
- 19:03still usable have his phone number man.
- 19:06Yeah, exactly. And, you know, they do in for
- 19:09him and You take Michigan State this year?
- 19:12I know you guys lost to them. Did anybody see them wanting any
- 19:16more than five or six games in the way Bell?
- 19:20Pucker hit the portal found his guys to put in certain
- 19:23positions, going and getting Kenneth Walker from Wake Forest
- 19:27the opportunities. There in every time you hear
- 19:31coach prop, talk of our interviews, who was at what we
- 19:34call Tech talk live, he talks about the portal, he is going to
- 19:38have specific eyes focused on the portal.
- 19:40So, There's no doubt and you and for me it for us is fans you
- 19:44kind of love it because you know if he doesn't like what he sees
- 19:48we currently have on roster. He's going to go fishing for
- 19:51them and it's not going to take long to put his team together.
- 19:55Yeah, we have a new basketball coach up here and and we had
- 19:59talked about how he went out and got four or five guys off the
- 20:02transfer portal and it's the same way with the football
- 20:04portal and that is okay. You know what you know, maybe
- 20:07you guys need a left tackle. So there's three guys out there.
- 20:10You got Go out and recruit, you know, you got to go to lot.
- 20:14Easier to build your team rather than going out going to a high
- 20:19school and saying, hey we we need a left tackle, we need you
- 20:21in two years. So I got a question for you,
- 20:25think about like, Say you spend ten million dollars in
- 20:29recruiting right now. High School.
- 20:31Recruiting you may as well drop it down to five million dollars,
- 20:35High School recruiting and five million dollars transfer portal.
- 20:38And that's where we're at right now.
- 20:40What? So why would you spend the
- 20:41majority of your time and your staffs expertise out there?
- 20:47You have to do the high school recruiting.
- 20:49Yes, you have to do that but you could also go that transfer
- 20:52portal and pick what you want and you know the transfer portal
- 20:56in the ni L things changing. Game a little bit because it's a
- 20:59lot easier to get rid of guys to it's like hey you know, it's not
- 21:02working out here, why don't you jump in that portal?
- 21:04You know, one of those I played you know, if a kid was a bust,
- 21:09he was there for four or five years, no doubt you were, you
- 21:11were stuck with you and nowadays.
- 21:14It's not what's not working out you needed, you just get out,
- 21:17get the hell out of here, and that's good and bad.
- 21:20You know what, you know, coach Frey could go out right now and
- 21:24he can pick up whatever he is, he could go food shopping in the
- 21:27grocery. A store right now and pick out
- 21:29all the ingredients of the stool.
- 21:30He wants to make Absolutely, I think that's the crazy thing
- 21:36about the, the transfer portal is that, you know, we're seeing
- 21:40the problem that the Hokies have had is roster management.
- 21:43Overall, we like, we've been a little bit too dependent on the
- 21:46transfer portal to even have what I would consider a
- 21:52reasonable roster between. I mean, the quarterback position
- 21:56is probably the biggest one going into this offseason where
- 21:58we just had Braxton Burmeister, hit the transfer portal, knock
- 22:03skater. Back up at the transfer portal.
- 22:05So we got another kid, that transferred from a, and him a
- 22:10year ago, but he did, and two more to the transfer portal in
- 22:15one, who tore it up at Tennessee.
- 22:17So you talked about lobsterman and then there's other players.
- 22:20Like we had a kid, go to Central Michigan, and I know that's G5
- 22:23because you're pimping, Cleo pembleton, tore up, Central,
- 22:26Michigan. I feel like we're coming off a
- 22:29staff that it was like, apparently, like the kid that
- 22:32went to Central Michigan. Ian.
- 22:35Like he ran good routes exp. He was Dynamic, but he had
- 22:38struggles catching in. It always irritates.
- 22:41You, you see this kid? Catching everything up.
- 22:42There is like, you didn't want to take the time to work with
- 22:45that kid. He showed you, he was Dynamic
- 22:48with the ball in his hands. He had good route running
- 22:50skills, he could punt return in, he couldn't catch the ball, his
- 22:54freshman year he's an 18 year old kid and it's like well gee
- 22:57at the portal head back home and you see this kid on Wednesday
- 23:01nights. What one way of seeing that he
- 23:03had three touchdowns One offer on one off the pot, return went
- 23:06off and had like 300 yards total so it drives me crazy.
- 23:10Let me hold on. We settled down here.
- 23:12For we go, like to Curtis awesome.
- 23:23Now it's not official but it's unofficial.
- 23:28Power. Bonds going to be joining us as
- 23:30the offensive coordinator. Not sure if it's going to be a
- 23:32CO type role or what. But up to Penn State just a
- 23:36couple years ago, he was The Coho.
- 23:38See, he was the tight ends coach for man, some really good tight
- 23:42ends that feeling with had been on my fantasy team.
- 23:45This year helping me out here and there but what's the feeling
- 23:51out of Happy Valley with Boeing as a coach in a recruiter?
- 23:56Oh, he was great recruiter, no doubt about that.
- 23:59He be he left. He you know what could have
- 24:03named Joe Moore and I know we talked about it.
- 24:04Free pre on the pre-show. But Joe Moorhead, Mississippi
- 24:07State Oregon. Now, he's a believe it did he
- 24:10take Akron? Is that who he tell?
- 24:11Ya? Took Akron.
- 24:12Okay, so he's down there now, but, you know, that's who Tyler
- 24:15was learning from with was Joe more per head and then he
- 24:18actually left to went, though, he actually went to Fordham
- 24:22where Moorhead was coaching before he came to Penn State.
- 24:24So, Heads up, he's very good offensively, he's a fantastic
- 24:29recruiter. He's at the Jacksonville Jaguars
- 24:32right now. So he must be pretty good for
- 24:33urban to hire him to an NFL staff.
- 24:35So but you know, he took that his head and brain of a good
- 24:39cook, try have a good relationship, I guess for him,
- 24:42bring him on as the o.c. down there with you guys.
- 24:44Hopefully and I personally think he'll do a great job.
- 24:48He's a good man also but he's also a really, really good
- 24:51recruiter. So I'm going to tell you guys
- 24:53that the future is very bright down there in Blacksburg Okay.
- 24:57Yeah I wanted to ask this. I know you know he was carosi
- 25:02and 29th year. 2019 I guess he called the the bowl game that
- 25:07you're right. When Ricky Ronnie went to
- 25:10whoever you riding with Old Dominion.
- 25:12Yeah and then I guess 2020 was there a reason that he decided
- 25:18to take the job other than Urban Came Calling or like what was
- 25:22The Whispers out there and State College?
- 25:26Well, they had that he had probably been passed over twice
- 25:28now for that offense of coordinator because again, we've
- 25:31had for four years up here. So he was the replacement for
- 25:34Ronnie and then they went out and they picked up the guy from
- 25:37Minnesota who really didn't work out well and but I think that, I
- 25:44mean, I don't know for a fact I don't know anything I've ever
- 25:47heard any rumor of it but you know he probably felt like he
- 25:49was passed over and then he need to get some more experience out
- 25:53there and he went down to Jacksonville work with Urban You
- 25:56know, who would have thought that we're in this position with
- 25:59a reminder that, you know, when he took that job last year.
- 26:04Yeah, I thought that it wasn't going to be good for him
- 26:06long-term. I didn't think it would be this
- 26:08much of a clown show that he's firing.
- 26:12It seemed like everything with the girls at the boys stuff in
- 26:17the, in the locker room. I mean, or his tenure ever, he
- 26:23couldn't get to work. The treatment did.
- 26:26I was gonna call Trudeau had more wins the NFL to him, he did
- 26:29and he lasted long, it's impressive, that's all into this
- 26:33to think about absolutely. Abso-freakin'-lutely.
- 26:38Hey man for another show because he has a 50 million dollar
- 26:42contract they said they're not going to pay.
- 26:44So did get ready for those fireworks down there before?
- 26:46Oh yeah, that's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 26:47There. The counter Sue and it's going
- 26:49to be ugly. All everything's going to come
- 26:50out. It is is what he wants that
- 26:53money. They're going to say, well, you
- 26:54did this and you did this, and you did this.
- 26:57That's in a court of law. So it's gonna be stressful and
- 27:02just us about to get official, it will put it on the record.
- 27:06Hey, but you know what? I'll say for you guys up there
- 27:08I'll get Franklin credit at least he is willing to move on
- 27:12from overseas if it's not working and I'm hoping Brent's
- 27:16that type of guy to like it as much as we're excited about
- 27:19Tyler, if he's struggling, I hope he takes James's thing.
- 27:23Okay, we need to move on because unfortunately for us is Virginia
- 27:27Tech fans, who really the last 15-plus years, that's always
- 27:32been our issue. You talked about having
- 27:34struggles on offense that was the Through us both defense,
- 27:39given up eight, nine points, a game and losing multiple games a
- 27:42year because they hold the team to 10 or 13 and we can't get the
- 27:4614. So I'm hoping fry takes that
- 27:50from obviously one of his, you know, I wouldn't say buddy, one
- 27:54of his mentor's and James it says you got to move on from
- 27:57guys when they aren't being successful.
- 28:00And You know, that's my feeling that just because a deal with it
- 28:05so long. Yeah, it's a bit the big thing
- 28:08that we always had is that we had some decent offenses, but it
- 28:10was always like it was in spite of the tell.
- 28:14Like we had really good talented and skilled positions and
- 28:17quarterback and an occasion offensive line.
- 28:19But we just the offense as a whole just could not get it
- 28:23going, consistently me, we had several, you know, really good
- 28:28running backs, guys. That played in the NFL wide
- 28:31receivers, have played in the NFL.
- 28:32FL offensive lineman played in fell on the same team and just
- 28:36averaging 20 points, 25 points, a game like, you can't win like
- 28:40that in the ACC Paterno and Frank Beamer loyalty to your
- 28:47guys and keeping it. The same staff for 25. 30 years,
- 28:50we're never going to see them again, boys.
- 28:52And that those days are over and it's good and bad, you know,
- 28:55there's no doubting me. You, you know, there is too much
- 28:58turnover in football. But like we just said, I said
- 29:01about that sign. A stuff that days of football,
- 29:04that we knew and we loved. And we play, they're long gone.
- 29:07So we got to figure it out. And again, you guys got a guy
- 29:10who understands the the transfer portal understands recruiting
- 29:15understands kids nowadays, you know what they want?
- 29:17He knows it's no longer going to play in Blacksburg Virginia Tech
- 29:23because you want to play for Virginia Tech.
- 29:25It's just for you Tech is going to be my best opportunity to get
- 29:28rid of the NFL. And that's the way these kids
- 29:30think, right now it could be a Seven string offensive guard who
- 29:33thinks he has NFL aspirations and you know it's crazy but this
- 29:38is the way these kids are nowadays and I think the coach
- 29:40all the coaches nowadays they understand that and the faster
- 29:43that people will learn that the quickly returned around will be
- 29:47yeah. Yeah.
- 29:49I definitely agree with you there.
- 29:50I think, you know, if you're thinking about it from the same
- 29:53mindset that that folks were approaching it in the 2000s and
- 29:57the 90s. I mean, it's it seemed like 2010
- 30:00was kind of the big shift when When things kind of went from
- 30:05from one mindset to the other and then it's only gotten added
- 30:08onto with the transfer portal and then again, with within IL
- 30:12this last year and, you know, me and Curtis always talk like and
- 30:17IL could be something that is an asset.
- 30:20But because the NCAA just drug their feet and Drug their feet
- 30:23and then just said, all right, you guys figure it out and now
- 30:27we're just out of like it's such a clown show right now,
- 30:30everybody trying to figure out are you how we're To navigate in
- 30:32this this kind of new over monitoring it?
- 30:35Yeah, no this one, I'm going to give you a five million dollar
- 30:40deal. What?
- 30:41Kid is going to say no to that. Nobody, nobody nobody, you know.
- 30:45And then the sad part is the sad part will be.
- 30:49When that kid is terrible as freshman year, they're going to
- 30:51be like, you don't have a deal anymore, son.
- 30:55Oklahoma, what the hell was? All right?
- 30:58Oh yeah. It's just not good, it's not
- 31:33good at all. It's it's I understand the point
- 31:37of it. Listen, everybody got exploited
- 31:40when you were in college. I get it.
- 31:41You know it's what happens and the school makes money off of
- 31:45you and you get nothing I get it.
- 31:46Just what about giving every 85 scholarship kid five thousand
- 31:51dollars a month and just add that into the scholarship money
- 31:55and then you don't have anybody going out there because This is
- 31:58what's going to happen. You're going to have the left
- 32:00tackle. Who is going after and I see
- 32:04money but the Star Quarterback and running back.
- 32:06Get that money, you think that guy's going to be happy about
- 32:09that and you think that's going to be okay in the locker room.
- 32:12So the big boys up front are going to get anything that's
- 32:15going to be your running backs, your quarterback from your star
- 32:17linebackers. That's just the nature of the
- 32:20game. So the big boys up front of
- 32:22gonna be pissed. We're still going to be hungry.
- 32:23We're still not going to be too big of any kind of money and
- 32:26it's going to be all kinds of issues in the locker room.
- 32:29It's just bad. You mean just bad bad bad.
- 32:31Wait, Hey coach. I can't play this week.
- 32:34I have an autograph show. I got to miss practice tomorrow
- 32:36night. No I got to go see my tax
- 32:39account. I gotta go see this person
- 32:40because I'm going to have a tax burden right now, it's just
- 32:44insane. Them.
- 32:45Think he does on the same mindset.
- 32:46I am because I told Brian before my joke, is this?
- 32:50What happens when the kids forget to pays his taxes?
- 32:52And he's in Ohio State quarterback?
- 32:54He's coming to Happy Valley to pull me guys.
- 32:56Oh no, he's getting arrested because he didn't pay his taxes
- 32:58last year. Oopsie.
- 33:00Let's close out with this. Because again keep we're going
- 33:03to head back sometime in the near future because we just went
- 33:0645 minutes on this and there's a plethora of issues we love to
- 33:09talk about with you, but let me ask this Gutfeld Brent, pry.
- 33:15Virginia Tech, does he get us back where we expect to be
- 33:18competing for ACC title? Winning nine ten, eleven games a
- 33:21year? Absolutely help.
- 33:25It can do it. He could do it, man.
- 33:29I like that mindset. I love the sound of that.
- 33:57You know, I think, ever since the announcement has been made,
- 34:02it's just kind of been a difference which here in in
- 34:06Richmond where we are in Blacksburg it just there's a
- 34:09completely different feeling around the for the program.
- 34:12And, you know, some of it has to do with some of the ineptitude
- 34:16of the previous staff. And some of it has to do with
- 34:18just the fact that what coach prize bringing to the table, is
- 34:22the goods. And I think that's What we've
- 34:25been missing? He's going to he's going to go
- 34:28out there and he's going to get your fan base.
- 34:29All riled up, that's what you got to do.
- 34:31You got to get the fan base behind you?
- 34:33And then Virginia Tech, I mean, you know, I live down there with
- 34:36in Richmond and then, and that area for what, for five years, I
- 34:41know who they like him in there to give me all over UVA fans,
- 34:44you one, but you could tell who they are.
- 34:45But you know who the you, that Virginia Tech fans are and
- 34:48there's a lot more of them out there.
- 34:50And you know I have always said that the Virginia Tech at Penn
- 34:52State guys are very very similar in our one is A lot of people go
- 34:58to Tech grad school from Penn State.
- 35:01And a lot of people go to Virginia are Penn State grad
- 35:03school from Virginia Tech because of the ad buildings and
- 35:06the AG sciences and all that stuff.
- 35:08So there's a lot of lot of turnover, a lot of Virginia Tech
- 35:12and Penn State marriages to. So I've always liked that about
- 35:18you guys and you know, there's you're going to have a bunch of
- 35:20people up here who are going to root for private for you guys.
- 35:22So take Clemson down FP. It.
- 35:27Do it baby. You got it.
- 35:29Give it back to the way it was. There we go.
- 35:32Well, we got you on here. I know we're going to talk about
- 35:34the the Pinstripe Bowl a little bit here after our break.
- 35:37But when I do, we talked off. Are you said that you had a
- 35:41experience there a couple years back.
- 35:44What can we expect from the Pinstripe Bowl for the Hokies?
- 35:48Dude, I'm telling you. It was, I had never gone.
- 35:50I mean, I grew up in the Philadelphia area, so I really
- 35:53never had to leave that area. Went to New York.
- 35:55Sure. See the maid.
- 35:56Once or twice in my life before being an adult.
- 36:00So what I had never been to New York City for holiday season
- 36:04with the Rockefeller tree with the ice skating rink in disease,
- 36:08NBC Studios. And you can just feel there's an
- 36:10aura up there about it being the holidays, and it was just such a
- 36:13cool thing. Just a really, really cool thing
- 36:16to experience a ton of restaurants.
- 36:17As I mean, you don't have to talk about The Nightlife or the
- 36:20restaurants, but the game is really cool because you
- 36:22obviously, you're in, you know, you're in Bronx in the Bronx.
- 36:26And you getting off the subway, and there's the cathedral
- 36:29baseball right there, just the whole landscape of it and just
- 36:33seeing how its setup is a really cool, cool thing.
- 36:36And I wish I remember the pregame bar.
- 36:39I was at because it was a hell of a time.
- 36:41And the postgame bar was even better.
- 36:42So, it's a little bit riskier right now than it was five years
- 36:54ago to go to New York City. With the You know, the, the
- 36:57police issues and stuff like that, but it was really worth
- 37:00it. I really, really enjoyed it.
- 37:01I mean to the point where I'm as mad and pissed off, I was about
- 37:04Penn State season. I would have grown them.
- 37:06If they had penetrated going to the Pinstripe Bowl, I would
- 37:09have, I would have definitely driven up.
- 37:11How nice? Yeah.
- 37:12Unfortunately, neither of us can make it up there this year, but
- 37:14I know there's a lot of folks that live that are to follow us
- 37:17on Twitter that are heading up there.
- 37:19So hopefully they'll have a good stuff that way but four minutes
- 37:23but before we let you go Keith She ate you jumping on, it's
- 37:27been great talking with you again, chop a little bit.
- 37:31All chopping it up about Coach pry but make sure your Virginia
- 37:34Tech. So thank you for joining us and
- 37:36I really appreciate it. You got it, man.
- 37:38I enjoyed it too. Good luck to you guys this year.
- 37:40I'm sure I'll be talking to you guys again.
- 37:42I'll definitely, we will definitely be having you back on
- 37:44to talk a lot of these bigger issues in college football, man,
- 37:47because it's only going to get worse, brother.
- 37:50We're going to be you're going to be calling me next weekend
- 37:51saying did you see this about? Yeah, exactly.
- 37:54You know, I'm not actually trying to do.
- 37:56Do some stuff to help our guys out.
- 37:57I mean, you, I mean, I go back to Virginia Tech and Penn State.
- 38:00I know we're going wrong here, but we're not in a big
- 38:03Metropolitan towns, man. We don't have that stability.
- 38:06So, a school in Virginia Tech in a school.
- 38:09Like Penn State are behind the 8-ball.
- 38:10We are really, really, really like we can't compete mean.
- 38:14Just believe that we can compete with pit.
- 38:17When it comes to like ni L deals because they're in a city, they
- 38:20have so many more opportunities and that's going to catch up to
- 38:24us in the long run if we don't get ahead of it.
- 38:25So good luck with the boys. You're going to need it.
- 38:28So will we? I Keith?
- 38:29We appreciate it, man. All right, y'all before we get
- 38:34into even more, we are going to take a quick pause so I can
- 38:38drink something Brian. Can drink something for a quick
- 38:42pulse from our digital partners. As we take a quick break, we'd

- 38:59You can get your free report by visiting.
- 39:01Grassroots digital studio.com forward slash free Dash website,
- 39:06Dash report. Now back to the episode Again we
- 39:10thank you for having and why before you buy the commercial we
- 39:15got a lot done load. Now we've been talking with
- 39:17Keith 50 minutes about Tyler Bowen about Coach prize
- 39:20experiences and some other things and trusted will have
- 39:24Keith back on the discuss, a bunch of other things in the
- 39:27near future compromise. Talk about some things hokey
- 39:30wise let's talk about signing day last week and you know how
- 39:35is your feeling overall? Did you like how we ended up
- 39:39probably right 30th in the class you know what I like it overall
- 39:43obviously. I would have liked for a couple
- 39:45of those late Flipz from coming some of the the to her high
- 39:49profile players and Ramon Brown and Alex, or gee.
- 39:53I wish we could have held on to those guys, but close out the
- 39:57class. Good flipped a couple UVA
- 39:59commits late, you know, pulled in a couple other guys like
- 40:03Connor, McClane late. I think that kind of really
- 40:07sealed a really good class and overall the best Best class that
- 40:10we've had since kind of the early 20 classes there so I'm
- 40:14looking forward to see what these guys can do on the field.
- 40:16Especially, I know we talked about it earlier with Keith but
- 40:18we got 12 of those guys in rolling early and that's going
- 40:21to be big especially with the holes we have in the roster from
- 40:25just bad roster management, overall, and then all the
- 40:27opt-outs we've been dealing with.
- 40:29Yep. And you talk about the TVA
- 40:31commits. Brody Meadows with one, we had
- 40:33talked about Brody back in the spring.
- 40:35We're looking at some of the players in the state of
- 40:36Virginia, but the other guy that was And then committed and
- 40:41signed on Friday. Zaevion Bradshaw Ahmad Bradshaw
- 40:46son out of G. Same high school as Meadows.
- 40:49Three star, six foot 180 five listed as an athlete.
- 40:55I think they listed him as receiver.
- 40:57If you go back and look I'm going to be a slot receiver.
- 41:00Yeah. Okay, slot receiver.
- 41:02Yeah, I mean in a solid, you know, list of, you know, offers
- 41:06an interest, you know, Cincinnati appstate salsa
- 41:09Interest from West Virginia, some interesting Notre Dame.
- 41:12So obviously there was something there and flipping them was a
- 41:17big thing. And it's again, it's like the
- 41:21focus on the state, right? Even though we lost a couple
- 41:23guys in state. We gained a couple more guys and
- 41:26I tell you what both Brody and is thing, you could see they
- 41:32were waiting on that offer, right?
- 41:34You could? Yeah, I mean I think Brody was
- 41:37really hurt that he didn't get Offer from the Hokies earlier
- 41:43when Fuente was around getting getting that offer one Sprite
- 41:48took over really again, emphasizing you know, talent in
- 41:53your backyard Bluefield. Virginia is definitely here,
- 41:58Blacksburg backyard, so taking advantage of that I think was
- 42:03big for us and it definitely said I think it sends a good
- 42:08message to the Out in the state, right?
- 42:11Yeah. So whether or not either of
- 42:14these players end up having significant careers for the
- 42:17Hokies, it sends a message out, the gate that we are
- 42:19prioritizing town in our backyard talent in, our state
- 42:23talent, in our footprint, abso-freakin'-lutely.
- 42:27All right. I'm almost stopped here for one
- 42:29second. We're watching the tech.
- 42:33Do you gain as we record tech? Oh, hey, as they had to halftime
- 42:37lead. Now down five with ten minutes
- 42:39to After coming off, obviously, the most impressive game last
- 42:42Friday against st. Bonaventure hey, bonaventure's a
- 42:45good, a 10 team we can attest to that watching them.
- 42:48Maybe see you and they took them behind the Woodshed and right
- 42:53now they're keeping up with a impressive Duke team.
- 42:57Yeah. And I think that's, you know, I
- 42:59think this is a little bit of it.
- 43:01Maybe a turn of the corner for the team, even if they aren't
- 43:05able to hold on and win this one, the game against Saint
- 43:09Bonaventure was big, I think for confidence, right.
- 43:14I think we went through a string where we lost a couple, that we
- 43:16shouldn't have lost a couple other ones that we thought we
- 43:21could win. And we kind of let get away.
- 43:24And the saint Bonaventure. One was big and I think, you
- 43:27know, think the bodies didn't have their best game.
- 43:29Obviously that wasn't their best game.
- 43:31But at the same time show them some of that was dictated by
- 43:35what the kids were doing. So I'm hoping that there would
- 43:37have to close this out. Get Win against a really
- 43:41probably the best opponent in the conference at they'll see
- 43:44all year and kind of keep moving and get some momentum.
- 43:49Well, we say that in as we get done with an interview on Keith
- 43:53and I'm paying more attention, we're losing.
- 43:55So I might have to turn it off or down 10.
- 43:57Now, let's go to this problem. Obviously, some big news on the
- 44:00coaching front. Let's start with one more guy
- 44:03retained and that is piercing, Prelude going to go from
- 44:07Defensive Player Development. Meant to the safeties Pearson
- 44:12and originator of DBU was here. 95 to 1998, drafted, and then
- 44:18played 12 years including a Super Bowl ring.
- 44:21We're not going to talk about the Super Bowl ring yet.
- 44:25How are you on this higher brine?
- 44:29I actually like it. Now I will say this, it is not
- 44:32sexy. Oh not it's not sexy to promote
- 44:35your director of Player Development for defense to your
- 44:40coach. We saw it happen and I'm a
- 44:44couple years back. But where I think is different
- 44:49is person's overall pedigree in the NFL time that he spent with
- 44:57Jay-Z on the road this year yelling.
- 44:59The last thing is that opportunities were available to
- 45:04him before now and he passed on prioritizing spending time with
- 45:10his family, being able to be in a local area.
- 45:13Most of his time, not not have to be on the road, recruiting.
- 45:16Eating I think as his kids are getting older the opportunities
- 45:19they'll presenting themselves to jump in and coach for your alma
- 45:23mater at a position that you played that you are highly novel
- 45:28in and for a new staff where there's as much as about the
- 45:33program is there's been in a while.
- 45:37Absolutely. I mean he's a legend here at
- 45:39tech and and I think him being here for a few years.
- 45:44It a it probably helps with the transition a little bit more
- 45:48because you've got JC JC. He's only been on the staff one
- 45:50year. A lot of these guys were going
- 45:52to be around next year. We'll probably have known
- 45:54Pearson from Jump Street in some way, shape, or form.
- 45:58And again, no knock on ham. Ham played Safety one year.
- 46:03He was good, and he played a couple of years, and he's kind
- 46:06of coached Defensive side. This is literally been pierced
- 46:08his position, his whole life, his whole life and now the
- 46:13question is, can he recruit And he coach them, the guy can play.
- 46:19There was never any question about that, but Kenny coach and
- 46:23I think we'll find out pretty quick as he's got a couple
- 46:25talented guys with them, who had good Seasons who were kind of up
- 46:28and down. If we see more steady play, will
- 46:32know, hey, maybe he's the right guy.
- 46:34Now, with that being said, Brian, if he's going to safeties
- 46:39The cheated Erik Jones is coaching Corners.
- 46:42That means Ryan Smith is leaving us.
- 46:44Unfortunately, Smitty's heading up to Northwestern head up to
- 46:48Northwestern. I think, you know, we talked
- 46:52before all this started to go down, Smitty was the other one
- 46:56on this staff that we were hoping got retain.
- 46:58We were hoping move two safeties to coach their.
- 47:01So there's obviously some disappointment there.
- 47:02And I think that that's probably where some of the the unsexiest
- 47:06lies as well. Is that we know we thought
- 47:08someone that was already on Staff was going to slide into
- 47:10that spot but, you know, he's moving on and I think some of
- 47:15that is probably good for him, just because overlapping
- 47:19regimes, when you don't have a full-on relationship with with
- 47:25the guy coming in, that can be can be a little dicey.
- 47:27Obviously, JC longer relationship with with Coach
- 47:31Pride, then, you know, the kind of short crossing, a pass with,
- 47:37with Ryan Smith there. So You know I wish you nothing
- 47:42but the best especially since he's not in the ACC so and maybe
- 47:48this is one thing where he goes get some more experience and
- 47:51we'll see him again in a few years that might be the case.
- 47:54He's definitely going to work for a hell of a head coach, and
- 47:57Pat Fitzgerald, who seems like every other year.
- 48:00If he's not, one of three games, he's winning nine or ten at
- 48:03Northwestern and taking them out of state to the brink and a
- 48:06championship game. All right, so Those coaches, we
- 48:10already talked about Tyler bone, it's not official but everything
- 48:14points. He's going to be the o.c. in the
- 48:15tight ends coach but since the last time we talked well we
- 48:19talked just me and Brian love last week of Italian them but
- 48:22we've had three additional coaches.
- 48:25I want to start with Stu hold here.
- 48:26Brian Stephen Holt going to be the Special Teams and the
- 48:32running backs coach in man does he have the background?
- 48:36Especially in special teams and running backs?
- 48:40You know, his special teams seem like they're he similar shall
- 48:45best. He's in a special teams guy
- 48:47there, you know, some of those receiving teams have returned
- 48:51teams have ranked up in the top five, which is really
- 48:53impressive. And somebody said, oh, they call
- 48:56me was going to be tight ends coach, and I'm sitting here,
- 48:58like, look at what he did it appstate, he attacked me in a
- 49:03running back room and that's where they're going to put him
- 49:07and obviously he crossed paths. Path with Coach cry back in the
- 49:11late 1990s down at Western Carolina where he was a g a
- 49:15while problems of DC. I like this I mean it's still
- 49:20someone from the ACC and you get there is no fall-off.
- 49:25Milk special teams coaching and can we say?
- 49:29It's probable upgrade at the running back room.
- 49:33Yeah, definitely an upgrade at the running back room at, no, at
- 49:37worst, a even swap their on the Special Teams unit.
- 49:43Could be a step up there as well.
- 49:46I like this higher overall. I'm looking forward to seeing
- 49:49what he can do with the running back room for certain because
- 49:52that's probably one area where we were dependent upon Talon out
- 49:57the gate in order to have a good unit.
- 50:00We were thankfully, able last couple years to bring in some Um
- 50:03transfers that buoy that up, but we're going to see what some of
- 50:06the young guys have this year and I'm hoping that Holtz going
- 50:09to guide them along the way and get them playing to their their
- 50:13best ability and maybe we'll finally see Marco Ali get some
- 50:16carries well with potentially what we're going to be doing the
- 50:20offensive game which I know you're going to be a little bit
- 50:23more as week next month, maybe more Kelly does get some carries
- 50:27Steve Holt, Broyles award finalist in the past.
- 50:30As is the next Guy. Brad blind.
- 50:33Joins the staff as the quarterback coach and passing
- 50:35game coordinator had been down at Georgia State, since 2019 was
- 50:42at Western Carolina before that, for about six years.
- 50:47And at first I was not Overwhelmed by this higher, I'll
- 50:54be straight up with you brown I wasn't but I'm going to give him
- 50:57a shout out. Shout out J&J Singleton out
- 50:59there we have some diem vajayjay and JJ was like, listen, JJ knew
- 51:06him from his time at Western Carolina and he actually had a
- 51:11class and he said, this guy knows his football.
- 51:16And as I said already, he was a boils award finalist before so
- 51:23I'm still sort of gung-ho on this its a Brad He's coaching
- 51:28quarterbacks have you got a goatee but you wouldn't learned
- 51:34what I mean. I think the big thing is that,
- 51:43you know, I think he's going to be a good complement to To the
- 51:46guy we think is going to be the offensive coordinator which you
- 51:49know it sounds like for all intensive.
- 51:51Purposes is our offensive coordinator and Tyler bow and I
- 51:53think he's going to be a good complement.
- 51:54Their Tyler's work with tight ends, he's worked with offensive
- 51:59wine, we got a quarterback Guru. We got someone that knows how to
- 52:05generate points from the passing game.
- 52:09Raglan can definitely do that. We've seen it with the the
- 52:12Georgia state offenses. We've seen it with the Western
- 52:14Carolina offenses. Out State and app state whose
- 52:18Normani Edwards. I mean, yes.
- 52:20So so he knows how to generate points in the passing game.
- 52:23He knows how to get points from athletic, quarterbacks that can
- 52:28run with run the football. He doesn't get them murdered
- 52:31though, so that's a benefit as well.
- 52:37So good pasta. Well, that's what I think.
- 52:39I think this is overall a good hire again, much, like, the the
- 52:45prioleau. Hi.
- 52:45Higher, it's not necessarily sexy but I think it is is good
- 52:49in strategic. Alright, last one, this just
- 52:52dropped today. The white Galt the fourth is
- 52:55going to be the director of strength and conditioning for
- 52:57the football program. Obviously, when we talked about
- 53:00key just a few minutes ago, his dad has been with James Franklin
- 53:03for over 10 years, you see Penn State a lot of times are getting
- 53:08out physical. Do you see what you do is take
- 53:09on Berkeley. I don't know as much he's coming
- 53:14from ODU in the Senate Penn State had a stent, South
- 53:17Carolina. He's a young guy.
- 53:19I mean, let me pull it up here real quick.
- 53:23He is like Let me see, he is 2009.
- 53:30Hanging out of it. So what 3435?
- 53:35He will be younger than us. Yeah, yeah, he's a little
- 53:37younger than us. And Hopefully the the apple fall
- 53:44doesn't fall too far from the tree, right?
- 53:47That's the big hope. And obviously I mean some of the
- 53:50things that they're doing at Penn State.
- 53:52Yeah, that's definitely going to have rubbed off on him between
- 53:56the emphasis on strength and also the, the analytic approach
- 54:01to the strength system. I think that's something that we
- 54:04haven't really seen. I don't think we're going to
- 54:06have any skinny legs out there anymore.
- 54:09No more Beachbody. Situation out there.
- 54:12This is going to be Strong and fast.
- 54:17And I think if you're training towards that then then you got
- 54:21the right mindset. So they're your hires there's
- 54:25still two positions left to hire that is offensive line coach on.
- 54:31There's a lot of smoke around that maybe in the next few days
- 54:34at gets announced and then there's been absolutely no
- 54:36smoking on the rod receiver coach.
- 54:38So or there's been nothing nothing louder than a whisper on
- 54:42the wide receiver front. There's full-on ship horns for
- 54:49the offensive line coach, so you absolutely correct.
- 54:54Well lit noses, you know. So think about it folks, on
- 55:01let's go here, Brian three guys. Additionally, have and have
- 55:05announced for the draft, John Parker, run other, kicker John
- 55:08tenuta Rahim Blackshear, any of these, three shock you Probably
- 55:14too new to the most to be honest with you because I think he
- 55:17still has tape that he could put out there to improve his stock.
- 55:22I think other than some early season snafus John Parker Romo
- 55:27had as good of a season as I could have expected from him
- 55:32short of missing to to chip shots in the first three weeks
- 55:36of the season. I don't really have that much
- 55:39negative to say about him throughout the year.
- 55:41We kicking the ball. Downs on kickoffs.
- 55:44That's all yeah. A couple couple, those couple of
- 55:46those rough but yeah, really rough.
- 55:49Yeah. But Blackshear, you know, i-i've
- 55:52praise Blackshear on this program enough times where you
- 55:56guys know what I think about his ability.
- 55:58And that that's an ability, that translate translate, probably
- 56:01even better to the NFL than it does to the college game.
- 56:05So, just the versatility has to catch the ball.
- 56:10He's worked. He's gotten a lot better running
- 56:12between the tackles. I think he brings a lot to the
- 56:14table and I think just the shelf life of a running back.
- 56:17If you're you know stocks hi go ahead and you know, cash in the
- 56:21chips. Well he's probably got his
- 56:23degree by now. Obviously, some of the games he
- 56:27had this year, he'd be really flashed.
- 56:31He's playing in the bowl, right? And you know he's not opted out
- 56:34so one more chance to flash one more time for him on Ramon the
- 56:39same way, probably got his degree.
- 56:40He's a kicker and believe it or not I think right now because of
- 56:45what's going on with shy, best kickers are getting chances in
- 56:49the NFL. He showed he has the leg to kick
- 56:51from 50 plus pretty accurately. So go for it but I'm with you.
- 56:58Two new to probably does need another year of seasoning, but I
- 57:01think here's why he's probably going and this is just my
- 57:04thought. He's got the physical makeup of
- 57:07a tackle. Either side of the ball.
- 57:10Perfect physical makeup. He's six foot, seven and a half,
- 57:12he's 305 pounds. Got pretty long arms.
- 57:16Don't have terrible feet, pretty strong guy, but for him it's
- 57:23he's been in the he's been in the Fuente corn system, his
- 57:26whole career to ask to say, let me flip it to go to a brand new
- 57:31system and learn everything new I might regress.
- 57:35And if I regressed, my chances are going, at least down my
- 57:39tape, looks solid. I have the frame, somebody might
- 57:43take a risk with me and you're seeing how that and, I know, I
- 57:47know it's different situation, but it's true.
- 57:55I know the situations are different, we're not dealing
- 57:57with a super senior situation. We're not dealing with any of
- 57:59that the covid related side effects, but sometimes next
- 58:05year's seasoning, improves your stock.
- 58:07And unfortunately, for Wyatt there were, you know, some
- 58:11things that were here in Flint a Rope, Rope heads to kind of
- 58:16start things off that, that hurt that that come back run a little
- 58:20bit. So and then hey He's taking
- 58:25everything since then and ran with it.
- 58:27All, I mean, Pro Bowl this year, big contract.
- 58:32Oh yeah, hold it. And having a great year this
- 58:35year. So I mean he's earning, he's
- 58:37earning the paycheck, and I'm looking forward to watching him
- 58:40some more of this year. One of the only NFL lineman with
- 58:44highlight tape reels Because he even wants to destroy people.
- 58:48It's awesome to see that. All right, Brian.
- 58:51Let's flip it over to the portal.
- 58:52Obviously, you mentioned it interview with Keith Braxton
- 58:55Burmeister, has hit the portal Braxton was trying to play in
- 58:59the bowl game. But it's one of those.
- 59:00It's a liability issue. You can't be in the portal and
- 59:03still play. I don't think this is a shock to
- 59:08anyone, but now we have kind of blumrich, Tosh and a walk-on.
- 59:16Yep. We I've got to run down sheet.
- 59:20Here I am hoping the next time. We talk in January because we
- 59:24are going to take a, you know, I'll take a couple weeks off
- 59:26guys. There's some ends in that
- 59:29category that we can talk about because we need some, yeah, we
- 59:33definitely need it in especially at the quarterback position,
- 59:36just because that's one position that, you know, if you're a
- 59:41quality transfer teams are going to lock you up, pretty quick.
- 59:46We've already seen a handful that have been locked up.
- 59:50Looks like, probably one more is coming through the pipe.
- 59:52Pretty soon at Pitt, get it on, slowed of us.
- 59:56Yep. But did anybody Mitel slovis
- 59:59that Whipple went to Nebraska you know, was a figurehead but I
- 1:00:08don't think that's the case with has always been a solid
- 1:00:12offensive coach. So I don't think that's the
- 1:00:14case. We'll find out quickly.
- 1:00:17What does BB land anywhere? Or is he He lands somewhere.
- 1:00:25I don't know if he lands a another power 5 gig.
- 1:00:27I just think between is is proneness to injury and I think
- 1:00:33just the limited our Mobility. It's going to limit his options
- 1:00:38at the power 5 level. You know, that's on tape now in
- 1:00:42Oregon, he was very young that there were still some ceiling to
- 1:00:45reach for at that point. Yeah I think at this point we've
- 1:00:49seen where that ceiling is and I think that's probably going to
- 1:00:53live Some of those opportunities.
- 1:00:55I think he could get a look at either G5 or FCS for sure.
- 1:00:59But I don't see a another power 5 spot for him.
- 1:01:04Yeah, I agree with you and it's unfortunate for him because I
- 1:01:07think Essentially, I'm just saying the something got
- 1:01:11coaching staff. Really?
- 1:01:11Messed him up. They took away some of the best
- 1:01:15things he did and then obviously the stories about the one read,
- 1:01:19you know, that can mess up a guy's head.
- 1:01:21So I hope it lands on his feet wherever he decides to go.
- 1:01:26No, no, no, no. It's definitely unfortunate.
- 1:01:29You know I'm going to come out on me.
- 1:01:31I was critical of his ability right now but I will commend him
- 1:01:34for putting everything out there when he was playing.
- 1:01:38Oh yeah when he was on the field walls he was 100% on the field.
- 1:01:43He Wasn't taking plays off, he wasn't shortchanging, the fans,
- 1:01:47he wasn't short, changing his teammates.
- 1:01:49He was laying it all out there, so I will give him credit for
- 1:01:52that. Absolutely 100%.
- 1:01:55Yep. All right, Brian.
- 1:01:57Let's keep moving still more. We kind of talked about this
- 1:02:00last week, but the game of headset is kind of slowly coming
- 1:02:05to an end for the power five schools.
- 1:02:08And, you know, just a couple, you know, two weeks ago, ten
- 1:02:12days ago, Tony It goes to UVA. I mean good for them, I think
- 1:02:20what the way it was looking I thought they were going to have
- 1:02:29to scrape the bottom of the barrel for something.
- 1:02:31They were getting the spooky hours there for a little bit
- 1:02:34because it looked like for a second that maybe the original
- 1:02:39deal they had with Elliot at fallen through and they were
- 1:02:41going to have to Pivot and probably the best pivot they
- 1:02:45could have done at that point. Was maybe talk to Gatos but in
- 1:02:50my opinion, Gatos would have been a step up from where you
- 1:02:54were with Elliot in terms of, you know, attractiveness for the
- 1:02:57job. But yet I think they probably
- 1:03:00did the best case scenario considering where Bronco left
- 1:03:03them, holding the bag at the end of the season.
- 1:03:06At the same time, I think we probably came out better in
- 1:03:09terms of overall fit culture, fit, and potential to kind of
- 1:03:14hit the ground running especially because of the how
- 1:03:16they had to close. The class was really having zero
- 1:03:19time to kind of keep things together after Elliot was
- 1:03:23brought on. Yep.
- 1:03:25And I think to Tony its farming in Clemson, we already went
- 1:03:29through, you know, Brent pry, Virginia Tech, Western Carolina,
- 1:03:36ull Georgia, Southern Vanderbilt.
- 1:03:40It's going to be interested in seeing staff put together who
- 1:03:43more hires. I don't think this one, shocked
- 1:03:46me Dan Landing going out to Oregon.
- 1:03:48We talked about Landing Landings been all over the place.
- 1:03:52He's going to a place where he's going to get high-end recruits.
- 1:03:55He's going to a conference. That's not really known for
- 1:03:58strong defenses with the exception of like Utah.
- 1:04:04I mean, 37 years old formerly, USC formerly USC, probably less.
- 1:04:09So, with linking going there, but I think he, I think, I think
- 1:04:13they made a fine. How are they?
- 1:04:15Made literally the best probably young defensive coordinator.
- 1:04:17They could. Yeah, I think if you were going
- 1:04:20to defensive higher, they probably did as best as they
- 1:04:22could there. I know they were looking at a
- 1:04:25couple other options as they were putting stuff together, but
- 1:04:32I guess they rumored to have talked to two chip.
- 1:04:37It's at one point. I don't know how much actual
- 1:04:42truth there is to those rumors, but they land on Dan Landing,
- 1:04:46which I think if you like I said if you're going deep, Offensive
- 1:04:48coach probably the best that they could have grabbed in those
- 1:04:51circumstances. And I'll go ahead and hit the
- 1:04:54next one. Do with hiring Mike elk.
- 1:04:57Oh, that's probably the best case scenario.
- 1:05:00They could have swallow, they absolutely nailed it guy.
- 1:05:05That was on our list. I'm just kind of, I mean, maybe
- 1:05:11it's one of those stability things.
- 1:05:12Right. Maybe that's why I know you went
- 1:05:14to UVA. They both, they're there.
- 1:05:17They both know. They are getting five to seven
- 1:05:20years, they know that kind of like, Brent Prime knows, he's
- 1:05:23probably getting six years. Like, you go to a program where
- 1:05:27you can actually try to build. It's better than going
- 1:05:31somewhere. You know, I hate to say this
- 1:05:33Landing going to Oregon, he starts sucking.
- 1:05:36They'll fire. You look what they did to help
- 1:05:38recover took him to a national title game.
- 1:05:39Two years later, they fired him. so, I mean, it's going to be
- 1:05:48interesting to see what L can do there.
- 1:05:51He had good defenses at Wake Forest, not great, Notre Dame
- 1:05:55and Texas A&M. He had a lead defense has so I
- 1:05:58mean, he has shown the ability to take moderate talent and get
- 1:06:03a good amount out of them even if they're not Elite.
- 1:06:06And I think for Duke, if you can get Above-average defense has
- 1:06:12yeah you got a you got a little bit of a shot.
- 1:06:15You gotta use. The question is going to be is
- 1:06:17you know the thing with cut is that cut early in his time at
- 1:06:21Duke was able to recruit defense pretty well and because of his
- 1:06:26offenses they were able to string a few things together.
- 1:06:29There is a good is he going to have the enough context to get
- 1:06:33the offensive staff in there? That's going to be able to
- 1:06:35complement you know those plumber.
- 1:06:39We punching above their belt. Defense has Abyssal.
- 1:06:43We're can lutely. All right, folks.
- 1:06:46So we're going to turn next. We're going to look at the
- 1:06:48Pinstripe Bowl, the best. We can right now.
- 1:06:53Maryland has no opt-outs nothing's broken Koda.
- 1:06:57Protocols, why's that they're losing players or coaches.
- 1:07:00So we're going to jump in right to the offensive side of the
- 1:07:02ball and we're going to talk about if I pronounce that right
- 1:07:06to Lo attack Viola obviously to his little brother.
- 1:07:10The quarterback for Star top 10 quarterback when he came out top
- 1:07:15200 player, initially went to Alabama then transferred when
- 1:07:19Mike locksley got the job at Maryland this season so far, you
- 1:07:25know, 68 percent completion, 30 over 3500 yards, 24, touchdowns
- 1:07:33and 11 picks so obviously had a good season.
- 1:07:38But what's the tape saying About him.
- 1:07:40Brian. Is it that he did?
- 1:07:42He just carve up the bad guys and played terrible against the
- 1:07:45good guys. Now, he actually did pretty well
- 1:07:49overall good accuracy, especially when he was throwing
- 1:07:53passes in the short game. He doesn't take a ton of shots,
- 1:07:58downfield. They when they do it's usually
- 1:08:01off some sort of play action that they usually like to have a
- 1:08:05Max protecting their or and at least an extra blocker when they
- 1:08:09take some of the shots downfield, he will be used in
- 1:08:13the running game as well. He's got really good
- 1:08:14athleticism. Particularly there was a play in
- 1:08:20one of the film's, I watch where he was able to run, a rat, a pin
- 1:08:23and pull quarterback sweep and he got to the edge, went up, the
- 1:08:27sideline for a touchdown about 58 yards so he has the ability
- 1:08:31to break a big play in the running game.
- 1:08:33That's not what his his primary game is though he is looking to
- 1:08:39throw the ball, swing the ball around, get the ball out of his
- 1:08:41hands quick. And he's also use some of the
- 1:08:44misdirection game on the Reeds and Things like that.
- 1:08:47But the primary thing we need to look at is that short passing
- 1:08:50game and making sure we get him out of rhythm.
- 1:08:55Yeah, and it seems like that based on the data on scene.
- 1:08:59They are a pass first team, not a run first team.
- 1:09:03Let's hope that maybe we get some snowfall in New York.
- 1:09:06The wind blows a little bit hard and he can't throw to a guy like
- 1:09:11Rakim Jarrett. His top wide receiver.
- 1:09:16Top 30 player top player in, d.c. top, five white out, five
- 1:09:22star played at st. John's, we know our deal with
- 1:09:26st. John's, we're not allowed to go
- 1:09:27in there anymore or do Under the old regime.
- 1:09:29Hopefully, prevent cracking open up those doors like, you get the
- 1:09:33to st. Francis guys, this year.
- 1:09:36But man, this guy's torrent has Hornet up this year. 56
- 1:09:41perception 769 yards 13.7? Per catch five touchdowns.
- 1:09:50What are we seeing? Edward King, Jack is clearly.
- 1:09:52He is tyros favorite Target. Yeah, and ironically, he's got
- 1:09:59good yards for catch but he's really more of a stick.
- 1:10:02Mover that just has really good run after the catch.
- 1:10:04She's not running a ton of deep routes consistently.
- 1:10:09It's, you know, a lot of Slants and comebacks.
- 1:10:12He will break a kind of deep krauser.
- 1:10:14That's really that's really where he kind of gets guys beat
- 1:10:17deep as though, some deep crossers.
- 1:10:20We're that's where he can break off some of the big plays down
- 1:10:23the field but it's mostly stick mover routes then he's just good
- 1:10:28with the ball in his hands after the catch.
- 1:10:31That's good to hear. Because, you know, the other
- 1:10:34guys on the team, you know, only one other guy has more than 500
- 1:10:39yards and that's Dante Dimas. So, you know, I think it's one
- 1:10:43of those things. I think what hams got to do is
- 1:10:47look to focus. Him don't let him beat you.
- 1:10:51They let him beat you for the next hour about to talk about
- 1:10:54because he is really their only running back threat and that
- 1:10:57stay on fleet Davis. Three-star, a toxin Maryland,
- 1:11:05you know, so far this season you know, 664 yards on the ground
- 1:11:10only 120 carries so over five and a half K with eight rushing
- 1:11:14touchdowns. But man do they use him in the
- 1:11:18passing game? Third or third on the team in
- 1:11:21receptions with 32 at over 300 yards, averaging?
- 1:11:25Right about nine and a half. What's the tape telling you
- 1:11:28about this guy's game? Yeah, he shows really good
- 1:11:32burst. Even though he has limited
- 1:11:33carries in the running game, he gets really good consistent.
- 1:11:37Yardage, despite those limited carries and he has the ability
- 1:11:41to bust a big play in the running game.
- 1:11:43But he they really use the running game to complement the
- 1:11:47the passing game to complement, what they like to do with play
- 1:11:50action. He's primarily used just swing
- 1:11:54it out of the backfield, a check down for title Allah.
- 1:12:00He's primarily that type of player for them, he will
- 1:12:02occasionally run kind of a wheel or things where you're getting
- 1:12:06the ball to them further down the field.
- 1:12:08But this is really a guy that catches the ball in space.
- 1:12:11It can make guys miss and get up field for some big yardage.
- 1:12:14All right, good deal. All right, man, give me some
- 1:12:17info on the offensive line for this year, they are very average
- 1:12:23in their run game. They're better in past Pro, but
- 1:12:27they're not great, they do. Have a lot of play action plays
- 1:12:33both our POS and true play action.
- 1:12:37They're not the best at Blitz pickup, but when they run that
- 1:12:40run action, a lot of its counteraction.
- 1:12:42So you got guys pulling across the formation blocking, guys.
- 1:12:46Like we've seen, you know, to some success and some other
- 1:12:53failure this year, on our end with those counter play actions.
- 1:13:02You're not not the best offensive line overall, probably
- 1:13:05the weakest overall unit of the offense but they're good enough
- 1:13:09in past Pro where they're able to do a lot of things in the
- 1:13:13passing game. As long as the quarterback
- 1:13:16doesn't hold the ball too long. Now, you talk about their
- 1:13:19running game, I mean they're running game, average is under
- 1:13:21for, that's best bad. They're not in third in the
- 1:13:25country in over 130 game. But when you're averaging under
- 1:13:30four, Or that's where that's where you have to get scared.
- 1:13:34Because that says, well, if you run the ball three times, there
- 1:13:37is a mathematical chance. You will not get a first down,
- 1:13:43right? Yep.
- 1:13:44He's a magnetically, not get a first down and, you know,
- 1:13:48they're good in past Pro, but they're not like Elite.
- 1:13:51And, you know, and I say that they're giving up roughly over
- 1:13:55two sacks of game ranking somewhere in the 80s.
- 1:14:00So, Not like bottom of the barrel like they kind of all
- 1:14:04with the Run game but definitely there's going to be some
- 1:14:08opportunities there to take advantage of them.
- 1:14:12But before we look at how to take advantage of them, let's
- 1:14:14look at the defense prawns and almost start.
- 1:14:19I'm trying to figure out how to handle.
- 1:14:22Maryland are getting these recruits knit cross, the safety
- 1:14:27for Star top 50 flare out of the mouth.
- 1:14:31Ava. I mean, this guy so far this
- 1:14:35year, Ryan 63, tackles a couple sacks three interceptions out of
- 1:14:41a safety positions. A forced fumble, has some pass
- 1:14:44deflections. I mean.
- 1:14:49Thinking about him. Six-foot 2005 hell.
- 1:14:53He's a class of it is here. He's a class of 19.
- 1:14:59I mean, he could legitimately like, leave and I don't know if
- 1:15:04the tape saying that, but the stats say that, I mean, he has
- 1:15:08that potential, you know, he plays that safety position.
- 1:15:12He's really good, especially in zone coverage.
- 1:15:14He's rangy, he will be asked to man.
- 1:15:18On occasion, sometimes they'll actually put him on the outside
- 1:15:21receiver baying up. He has some lapses in his run
- 1:15:26fits and he's probably only an average Tacker which might be
- 1:15:29the things that potentially limit him.
- 1:15:32Being a guy that can jump right now.
- 1:15:34He's still got a little bit of things to clean up in his game,
- 1:15:37but just his athleticism and is, is ability.
- 1:15:42I mean, it's off the charts and definitely jumps off the tape
- 1:15:45and you know, that defense they run that 34.
- 1:15:48Oh, base. They'll switching to a 25 from
- 1:15:50time to time. So it gives him some
- 1:15:51opportunities to kind of move around and do some different
- 1:15:55things on that defense. Yeah, looking up here.
- 1:15:58If you're not watching Hokies down 11 late, so it looks like
- 1:16:01this is going to be a loss to Duke.
- 1:16:04Duke takes a 13-0 run early. Second quarter shooting second,
- 1:16:08half to really flip this game over and Brian, you talked about
- 1:16:12right there about running the 34, or on a 25.
- 1:16:16Obviously, they're depending on linebackers.
- 1:16:18And Rubin who God pronounces right hit the low, do the second
- 1:16:23definitely a another really good recruit you know class of 2020
- 1:16:33or star at a Hollywood Florida. You know 6-foot 225.
- 1:16:39What's the, what's the tape saying with him?
- 1:16:44Yeah, this is a guy that they're going to be bringing a lot of
- 1:16:47their blitzes, he's their primary Blitzer from the inside
- 1:16:49linebacker position. They'll send him on, run blitzes
- 1:16:53and in passing situations, he does a really good job of
- 1:16:57disrupting the line of scrimmage and then getting getting at the
- 1:17:00quarterback. Making the quarterback, get rid
- 1:17:02of the ball occasionally getting in there for a sec there.
- 1:17:06He's also a good tackler above average run stopper for this
- 1:17:11unit. And he primarily A, the running
- 1:17:15back when they go in to man coverage situations.
- 1:17:17So, you'll see him kind of Shadow the running back out of
- 1:17:19the backfield on passing Downs. If they're in man.
- 1:17:22Coverage. Yeah.
- 1:17:24And so far this year, you know, 50 tackles couple for laws.
- 1:17:28So, really more of a tackler than what you're seeing, you
- 1:17:32know, not a sack Master by any means and, you know, forced
- 1:17:38fumble, couple past deflection. So He seems like that guy.
- 1:17:46If you get to him, he's going to take you down.
- 1:17:49He's not going to get you in the backfield.
- 1:17:50He's not going to sack on the quarterback.
- 1:17:52He's not gonna be picking the balls off, so good player, not
- 1:17:56great, but let's talk to some young.
- 1:17:59I mean, it's yeah we got second full year on campus, he's got
- 1:18:04some growth there but But like I said, they primarily use him to
- 1:18:13Blitz to really disrupt the the line of scrimmage, he doesn't
- 1:18:16always get home in terms of making the play, but a lot of
- 1:18:20times that's not the goal of sending the blitz it absolutely
- 1:18:25isn't. So let's go to one last player
- 1:18:29here Sam will kind of Nua. Number 97 Sam obviously outside
- 1:18:37linebacker a Juco transfer. Or from beer, from up in Lowell,
- 1:18:43Massachusetts, you know, and so far this year, having a really
- 1:18:48solid season for them for being a Juco, transfer forty six,
- 1:18:53tackles or sacks two-and-a-half additional tackles for loss, is
- 1:18:59he their best Edge presence providers or somebody better
- 1:19:01than him out there? He's their best balanced Edge,
- 1:19:05present presents for sure. He is a big dude.
- 1:19:10Yeah, 63 like 275 and need some 180 is 63. 280.
- 1:19:15Big dude, coming off the edge. Usually.
- 1:19:18Don't see that type of size on guys that aren't already in the
- 1:19:21NFL and sometimes you don't see it then and he's he's got good
- 1:19:26athleticism 4280. He can be neutralized when you
- 1:19:30run away from him because he doesn't have that Elite Edge
- 1:19:33speed that you see with some guys in the in the 3-4.
- 1:19:36So you can, you can neutralize them a little bit.
- 1:19:40By running away from him and he's not an Elite pass rusher.
- 1:19:44But he does a good job with his bull rush, obviously, given the
- 1:19:47size. You probably expect that.
- 1:19:50So, look for him to be the guy that's going to apply some
- 1:19:52pressure on those passing Downs. Again, he's not elitist that but
- 1:19:56he's so balanced at both, the run in the past and and so good
- 1:20:01with that, using his size that he's going to be a load to
- 1:20:04handle, especially with, you know, being being down at least
- 1:20:08one offensive lineman. On the interior there.
- 1:20:12Alright. So there you have it.
- 1:20:14Some names to look for next Wednesday.
- 1:20:16When we play Maryland, Terrapins, and obviously, we've
- 1:20:20got our game plan. Our version.
- 1:20:23I'm also watching the end of the Missouri army game.
- 1:20:26Missouri up one or me driving. We went split pick on this.
- 1:20:31I wouldn't lose. Ooh, Brian, went Army.
- 1:20:33So we'll see if we're changing the update to the Bowl Pick'em
- 1:20:36so far. But Brian, let's talk about the
- 1:20:39Hokies game plan and obviously the Number one thing is, can we
- 1:20:46build a team? I think that's the big thing.
- 1:20:50Are we gonna have enough guys to safely field a team for this
- 1:20:55game? And I think we are.
- 1:20:58And that the, you know, the question right now is as we're
- 1:21:02getting closer to game time, we haven't been hit by the the
- 1:21:07covid bug. Get right?
- 1:21:09Okay. You know, a lot of the We're
- 1:21:12dealing with is roster management problems and opt-out
- 1:21:15problems and guys transferring problems.
- 1:21:18We don't have the problems that a Texas A&M is experiencing
- 1:21:22right now, but we are dealing with gaps in areas of our team
- 1:21:29because of those reasons I just mentioned.
- 1:21:32So hopefully something else doesn't come down the pike.
- 1:21:35That's going to make a bad situation worse.
- 1:21:37We're in a world of hurt on the 29th.
- 1:21:41Why, man, Man, here we go. They're inside the 40.
- 1:21:46Now 34 seconds left there about 12 yards from field goal Rings
- 1:21:51though. Army kickers.
- 1:21:54Let's talk about a couple things.
- 1:21:55Let's talk about offensive ly. Dude when me and you talked
- 1:22:00about this the other day I'm like we're going to run the
- 1:22:03going to pass the ball 10 times. I mean we got to control the
- 1:22:07clock, right? We're going to have to control
- 1:22:09the clock for sure. We're gonna have to limit You
- 1:22:13know, we need to maintain that the ball just to limit them
- 1:22:17having opportunities on on their offensive side.
- 1:22:19But we need to lean on our strength, which is our running
- 1:22:22game. We're still going to have more
- 1:22:25or less, the the running dynamics of our offense intact
- 1:22:28in this game and we need to take advantage of them.
- 1:22:32So looking forward to see what what's been drawn up to do.
- 1:22:36That knowing corn were to come out and sling it 30 times in the
- 1:22:40first half, and I don't know what that looks like but no
- 1:22:46right now. I'm expecting a very run-heavy.
- 1:22:49Run oriented quarterback power style.
- 1:22:55Offensive attack for this game. Yeah, and we have to do it
- 1:23:00because they do have a good passing often.
- 1:23:01Plus again we looked at the weather forecast, it's not
- 1:23:06showing snow or anything but it's still gonna be like 40.
- 1:23:09It's going to be a cold day up there on if they get an Arctic
- 1:23:12Breeze actually. Know what?
- 1:23:13Let's go to the weather forecast.
- 1:23:15So, what they're saying a week out, in New York City, New York
- 1:23:20predicting. Next Wednesday, actually 52.
- 1:23:25So it's going to warm up, but there are gonna be some chances
- 1:23:27of rain showers, potentially snow.
- 1:23:30So, do that and I think you talked about slaying them all,
- 1:23:34we're going to have Jalen Jones. We're going to have shit, they
- 1:23:38just got in field goal range. You might be wanting this one,
- 1:23:41buddy. Taking shots, right?
- 1:23:45Like if we're going to run the ball, a ton of eventually, we're
- 1:23:48going to get those free safeties in the Box.
- 1:23:51It's likely going to be kind of romantic back there he is.
- 1:23:53Number one on the death toll could be be transferring out but
- 1:23:56we're going to have to pop some big plays or scheme.
- 1:23:59Some big plays. I know you'd love to see like
- 1:24:01some running back Throwbacks and stuff like that.
- 1:24:03Right. Yeah.
- 1:24:05I'd like to see that. I'd like to see a couple big
- 1:24:07plays. Get hit.
- 1:24:08You know Connor does have a stronger arm than Braxton it's
- 1:24:11not an accurate arm. But it is a stronger arm, so if
- 1:24:15he can you know is if he's able to have the time to step into it
- 1:24:19and drive the ball downfield, you know there might be some
- 1:24:23opportunities. Hit some big plays to Jalen
- 1:24:24Jones to the Wayne Lofton. She may be Jaden pay you if he's
- 1:24:30out there there's going to be some options and I'm saying
- 1:24:33young guys names because we're not going to have, obviously to
- 1:24:36Rob is transferred trade, Turner's opted out obviously
- 1:24:40James Mitchell has been injured. So it's Going full youth
- 1:24:43movement on the skill positions, especially at the wide receiver
- 1:24:46range here. So we're going to look to, you
- 1:24:50know, hopefully hit one into one or two of those guys down field
- 1:24:53of a couple times. Just number one.
- 1:24:55Keep the - number to take advantage of some of those
- 1:24:59mismatches. Absolutely.
- 1:25:00Some loaded boxes and opportunities like that.
- 1:25:05Here's the game. Let's see, 41-yard, attempt.
- 1:25:08We're going to talk about the defense in just a second here.
- 1:25:11Folks about what we need. To do to slow down this Maryland
- 1:25:14offense snap. Hold there is a flag on the
- 1:25:18play. The field goal is good with the
- 1:25:21flag for but let's talk, about Braun Bend.
- 1:25:24Don't break defense. I have a deaf people because of
- 1:25:27what they do offensive ly, If you see us come out and single
- 1:25:33high or zero coverage, with the amount of people were missing
- 1:25:38Jemaine wall or not, going to play a more bar.
- 1:25:40No, not one play George William, you might lose your shit.
- 1:25:45Yeah. I mean I think we need to attack
- 1:25:48them and their offensive line because they are susceptible
- 1:25:50there. But we can't just run cover 1,
- 1:25:53cover 0, all game, and hope. For the best, we're going to
- 1:25:57have to mix things up. And we're going to have to make
- 1:25:59sure that we keep everything in front of us.
- 1:26:02So you can still go with those coverage options.
- 1:26:04But you got to make sure that you don't get beat Over the Top.
- 1:26:07If you get beat, it's underneath, it's in areas where
- 1:26:10guys can come up and make a play, make a tackle because if
- 1:26:14we let them run up and down the Field.
- 1:26:15Get some big plays. It's going to be a long game
- 1:26:19especially if we get to run after the catch.
- 1:26:23So definitely Bend don't break, is the biggest thing for me?
- 1:26:26And like I said, just limit those big passing plays because
- 1:26:29that's what they're going to go for to beat us.
- 1:26:32And like I said, it's not always going to be shots down the
- 1:26:35field, but it's going to be getting their Playmakers in
- 1:26:39space, or they can make one guy Miss.
- 1:26:40And now a 10, yard, gain turns into a 30-yard Kane.
- 1:26:44We need to make sure Days of ten yard game.
- 1:26:47Yeah. I mean and I'm hoping, what we
- 1:26:49see is a lot of quarters. While colorful covered threes.
- 1:26:52I mean, and I think if you're to be realistic and keep thinking
- 1:26:56about bringing pressure, we can run quarters and still bring
- 1:26:59pressure. Now, what has to happen is you
- 1:27:03explain this before, if we're going to do that, the guys who
- 1:27:06are sitting back in those zones, they've got a close quick.
- 1:27:09Like if we're going to send, we're going to send five or six
- 1:27:12and we're going to use the middle of the fields.
- 1:27:13Open whoever's playing that back.
- 1:27:15Because own got to got to close quickly or what got to come up
- 1:27:20in control because I make a sound tackle.
- 1:27:24So it's you know, I think cover 6 is going to be probably the
- 1:27:27most prevalent coverage. You see that quarter quarter
- 1:27:31half look where you can bring an outside linebacker.
- 1:27:35You can bring a nickel, you can bring a corner on a blitz and
- 1:27:41get home and still have soundness in the back end.
- 1:27:45The opportunities will be there. I'm going to just say this.
- 1:27:54I'm not giving a prediction this week.
- 1:27:55I'm not. I'm abstaining you stay where
- 1:27:59I'm abstaining. You can give them A bloodstain.
- 1:28:02Is way too many unknown variables.
- 1:28:04We have so many people opting out.
- 1:28:06We don't know who, we know who's not playing.
- 1:28:10We don't know. What is looking like behind in
- 1:28:12practice. We don't know what the hell
- 1:28:14corns going to do in his last game.
- 1:28:16I'm abstaining, I'm not giving a prediction, I hope the Hokies
- 1:28:20run all over Maryland's. Terrible Run, Deep.
- 1:28:22Sent it is one of the worst in the country.
- 1:28:24They're one of the worst scoring defenses in the country, giving
- 1:28:26up over 32 again and I hope we can win the game.
- 1:28:29If we make it a 12 possession game between both teams, we have
- 1:28:32a shot but I'm not getting a protection this week.
- 1:28:39I'll give one, just just just to give the The Listener.
- 1:28:44Some something that criticize me about if I'm wrong.
- 1:28:48I think it's going to be Maryland and it's solely based
- 1:28:51on the opt-outs they're playing with a full deck.
- 1:28:55They're not having to really adapt their game plan that
- 1:28:58they've carried throughout the year.
- 1:28:59We're less having to change how we're doing it or who it's going
- 1:29:05to In order to even put a team together for this one.
- 1:29:09So I think it's going to be a struggle.
- 1:29:12I think we keep it close though, but I just think that there,
- 1:29:16they played too many too many games together, they have enough
- 1:29:20talent to probably push them over the edge there and get the
- 1:29:23win. All right, Brian takes Maryland.
- 1:29:27I've staying because I don't know enough about our team right
- 1:29:29now. All right, Brian Saturday,
- 1:29:32pickles for this year we ended after the Army-Navy game.
- 1:29:35You said Seventy sixty two and two.
- 1:29:38Me 7455 and to so far through bowl season with that field goal
- 1:29:45by the Army kicker 41 yards, we're both 5 & 7.
- 1:29:50This is why we don't do spreads on the bowl games because it is
- 1:29:53a pain in the ass. But tonight we have a texted
- 1:29:58Brian this and he was driving, and he went back into twenty
- 1:30:01nine eight. 29 picks, Brian. We're picking them all lock in
- 1:30:07folks. All right, let's start starting
- 1:30:13tomorrow. Frisco Bowl down in Frisco
- 1:30:17Texas, Miami of, Ohio, and North Texas.
- 1:30:20I'll take the lead on this. I don't know anything about
- 1:30:23either of these teams. One's a Mac ones.
- 1:30:25Big green. That was an unnecessary
- 1:30:28roughness. So, I'm going to go with the
- 1:30:29movies here. I'm going to take North Texas to
- 1:30:32take this game. I'm kind of with you on this
- 1:30:37one, I think North Texas. I've heard more about them this
- 1:30:41year than I've heard about Miami of Ohio so I'm going to go
- 1:30:45solely off that. I think North Texas pulls it
- 1:30:47out. I'ma let you talk about the next
- 1:30:50one. I'm going to grab my computer
- 1:30:52charger before this bad boy does.
- 1:30:54Alright. So the next one y'all is well
- 1:30:59there's been a lot of heated rivalries about This one, it's
- 1:31:03UCF, it's Florence and the Gasparilla bowl.
- 1:31:08There were some tenacious things going on, UCF.
- 1:31:12After their big season of going undefeated, they wanted the home
- 1:31:16and home. Florida was willing to go with
- 1:31:20home home, and then back at the swamp one more time.
- 1:31:24So, little tumultuous also, you got Gus Malzahn.
- 1:31:28Very familiar floor from this time down at Auburn Florida's
- 1:31:33run. Under is much like us underneath
- 1:31:35a whole regime change the Napier.
- 1:31:38Obviously not in place also building a peered maybe just
- 1:31:41need to quit talking, but Brian and put earphones back on here.
- 1:31:49I just gave a synopsis of UCF in Florida.
- 1:31:52The Gasparilla Bowl, who are you taking?
- 1:31:57I'm going to go with UCF here. I feel like they're the more
- 1:32:01consistent team even though Florida's got more talent.
- 1:32:05I just think UCF, probably is better overall team or
- 1:32:08consistent. So let's take UCF here.
- 1:32:11I'm going to take Florida, I think I saw a lot from Florida's
- 1:32:14players, especially in that FSU game played hard, didn't quit,
- 1:32:18clearly like the assistant coach how to take for it.
- 1:32:22That's going to be an entertaining game to watch on
- 1:32:25both sides, but I think Florida, gets them in the end.
- 1:32:29All right. Brian the Hawaii Bowl.
- 1:32:33Only one team plays in Hawaii. V always Hawaii this year.
- 1:32:37They're playing your Old Coach sill field down at Memphis.
- 1:32:42And on this one, I'm going to take the home team.
- 1:32:45Give me a why they're used to the Sun, the surf, and all the
- 1:32:49fun stuff to do out there. It's just another football game
- 1:32:52to them. What about you?
- 1:32:55I'd normally go with you, but I'm going to be home or here.
- 1:32:58I'm going to go ride, silver feeling Memphis, don't pull it
- 1:33:01out. I thought you would be.
- 1:33:04All right. Next one.
- 1:33:07Camellia Bowl on Christmas Day, Ball State, and Georgia State.
- 1:33:13We say on this one, Brian. Let's see, man, I don't know a
- 1:33:21whole lot about either. I know more about Georgia, State
- 1:33:23than I know about ball State's. I'll take Georgia State.
- 1:33:28All right now, probably more Talent top to bottom so we'll
- 1:33:31see. I'm gonna go Georgia State
- 1:33:32though. All right, I'm gonna go to Ball
- 1:33:35State. I know Georgia state's lost a
- 1:33:39quarterback coach, and we do know that we know and probably
- 1:33:44someone has a lot of input on their offense.
- 1:33:46So I'm going to go to Ball State on this one.
- 1:33:48Just Strictly on what I know about that.
- 1:33:50All right, the always fun, Quick Lane Bowl, Western Michigan
- 1:33:55versus Nevada. You know what so Lester Missions
- 1:34:00offense earlier this year. Really put some points on fit
- 1:34:03had some other good games as well.
- 1:34:05I'm going Western Michigan strictly off of beating pit.
- 1:34:12That's probably not a bad idea. I think I'm gonna go with
- 1:34:15Western Michigan as well. Here, I haven't seen enough of
- 1:34:18Nevada. Play to have a good insight
- 1:34:21there, but I have seen a couple of Western Michigan outcomes, so
- 1:34:25I'll go with them. They're writing the Military
- 1:34:29Bowl, the bowl. We're glad we did not get
- 1:34:31invited to BC and it's also two teams that take fans hate,
- 1:34:37because they're on their own schedule every damn year and
- 1:34:39they should not be easy. UBC Mike, used to doing a hell
- 1:34:44of a job rebuild me. See you same with halfway up at
- 1:34:47BC. Can you look up and see if covid
- 1:34:51just playing? I think he is isn't because he's
- 1:34:53coming back, right? I'm pretty sure he's playing.
- 1:34:55He said he's coming back. So all right.
- 1:34:58So who you thinking on this one? Bronze its BC.
- 1:35:01It's definitely BC. Okay.
- 1:35:03I just think talent-wise, I think your copics probably
- 1:35:07played his way back into little bit of healthier.
- 1:35:09I think they've got the better over.
- 1:35:12Were all roster. I know ecu's doing it.
- 1:35:15Some some decent things down there now but I think BC just
- 1:35:19got too much talent. Alright, next brought we are
- 1:35:23going to go to the Birmingham bowl and we've got Auburn coming
- 1:35:28off a damn near upset of Alabama and the Iron Bowl in Houston.
- 1:35:34Coming off a really good season under Dana holgorsen, you know,
- 1:35:37basically losing two games, all year fighting with Cincinnati in
- 1:35:41the a a seat. Championship game.
- 1:35:45This is a tough one for me, but I want to go Houston Houston's,
- 1:35:49got the consistency Houston. Actually has a quarterback where
- 1:35:54the quarterback for Auburn is now going to be Dan Landings on
- 1:36:02quarterback out at organ. Yeah, I'm going Houston to I
- 1:36:06just think Auburn not having Nick's really probably breaking
- 1:36:11in a brand new quarterback. They've been up and down
- 1:36:14throughout the The year regardless of that I think
- 1:36:18Houston's been the more consistent team so I'll go with
- 1:36:20Houston both going Houston there in the Birmingham Bowl.
- 1:36:24All right, this is always an interesting.
- 1:36:26It's the first responder Bowl Louisville versus Air Force.
- 1:36:30What do you say on this one? Bro?
- 1:36:31This is going to be at the Cotton Bowl.
- 1:36:36Oh man. Um, this is a tough one, but I
- 1:36:39think I'm gonna go Louisville here.
- 1:36:41They've shown enough flashes throughout the season, where I
- 1:36:43think they probably do just enough to pull that one out.
- 1:36:47He's on the Louisville. I'm gonna I'm gonna match its to
- 1:36:49usual any time, a service Academy plays in a bowl game,
- 1:36:53multiple weeks to prepare, for those triple option attacks,
- 1:36:56it's usually always good things. I fall short tonight but also
- 1:37:00that shown that while we were While we were watching the tech
- 1:37:04game they missed numerous chances inside the 5-yard line.
- 1:37:09So they were forcing field goals versus kicking or forcing
- 1:37:12themselves. Make feel versus kicking
- 1:37:14touchdowns was Mizzou so I'm with you on Louisville here.
- 1:37:18All right, Brian, Liberty Bowl, Texas, Tech Mississippi, State
- 1:37:23air, raid, Sonny. Come D versus Mike Leach.
- 1:37:27Over under 110 passes. Come on over over we might hit
- 1:37:34130, Sophie got Texas, Tech or Mississippi State.
- 1:37:40I'm going with the fighting leeches.
- 1:37:42Give me Miss awesome. Would that be some people still
- 1:37:45refer to Texas Tech is. Finally, I'm going to go Texas,
- 1:37:53Tech gear. The guys, really fought hard for
- 1:37:56come. Be companies also being kept on
- 1:37:59that staff. By their new head coach.
- 1:38:03So I'm going to take Texas Tech with some emotion.
- 1:38:06Coming to this game in the, the pupil beats the, the teacher in
- 1:38:13this one, ok? Ok.
- 1:38:16Super interesting matchup next in the Holiday Bowl UCLA with
- 1:38:20The really, the dynamic quarterback.
- 1:38:23I know his first name is going what I want to say finney-smith,
- 1:38:26but under, that's a basketball player, but UCLA.
- 1:38:31State. What do you think on this one
- 1:38:35Brian? While I look up the name of the
- 1:38:43the player for UCLA because it's going to make me lose my mind.
- 1:38:48I'm going to take n c-- State here.
- 1:38:50I think their defense is what's going to keep them them in this
- 1:38:53game and feed them to a win? I think their defense is just
- 1:38:57gonna be too much for UCLA. I'm still I'm still efforting
- 1:39:01this here because I really want to know that kid's name because
- 1:39:04that is bothering me. NC State's defense.
- 1:39:09Yes, but it's again, it's they're flying out west.
- 1:39:13I'm not sure what time that game is going to be just a second
- 1:39:18here because now that's interested me.
- 1:39:20I feel like they always do the this game at like nine not like
- 1:39:2410 or 11. So another second here,
- 1:39:30definitely NC State's probably had their best season where you
- 1:39:33know, UCLA actually not had a bad season 8:00 kick, so not
- 1:39:38terrible for NC State. Dorian Thompson Robinson.
- 1:39:45Was their quarterback. You'd kind of lit it up this
- 1:39:48year, both rushing and passing, but I'm with you NC State better
- 1:39:54defense better overall offense. NC State for the win there.
- 1:40:01All right, Brian. What are you prefer?
- 1:40:05Bow ties or sweater vests or bib overalls?
- 1:40:15Man, that's a great question. In this game.
- 1:40:21I mean, West Virginia Minnesota. It's just the had to make the
- 1:40:27joke there. Yeah.
- 1:40:28You know, I'm not sure where I'm leaning on this one.
- 1:40:32This was, this is one where I let me help.
- 1:40:35I'm taking Minnesota. You take a Minnesota.
- 1:40:37I think West Bank West Virginia. Just just for the chit sang.
- 1:40:41I think no sodas had to have a great year, but there are way
- 1:40:45too many games where West Virginia could have easily lost
- 1:40:48her gently could easily be a 4-3 win.
- 1:40:50English here. Our game is one of them.
- 1:40:52There are few other ones where they literally could have lost
- 1:40:55and in not even been close. Probably Neal Brown gets fired
- 1:40:58this year so Brian's going to take the cousins, I'm going to
- 1:41:03take the sweater vest and row in your boat and p.j.
- 1:41:07Fleck. All right, speaking of cousins
- 1:41:10are other cousins playing the Fenway Bowl up in Boston vs.
- 1:41:13SMU? And on this one brine this one
- 1:41:19depending on what the boss can weather is going to be next
- 1:41:22Tuesday, which I have that on my phone as well.
- 1:41:24So let's do some forecasting there because these are two
- 1:41:27heavy throw offenses 46 and potential rain.
- 1:41:34I'm going to go SMU even though there's a coaching change, their
- 1:41:41other Boonville, we just drink wheat.
- 1:41:43No, UVA does not have a rushing offense.
- 1:41:47So I'm going to take SMU in this case.
- 1:41:51Yeah, I'm taking SMU. They do have a semblance of a
- 1:41:54running game even though they like to swing it around, a lot
- 1:41:57UVA has none of that. Both of them are missing their
- 1:41:59head coaches, a lot of their staff, so I'll take SMU.
- 1:42:04Yeah. But SMU had a little bit more
- 1:42:06time to prep and that's probably one of those big things that,
- 1:42:10you know, you have to kind of think about right, smu's
- 1:42:15nonsense, really what? Going on.
- 1:42:18What? Four weeks ago?
- 1:42:19Sonny come. He was going to TCU as compared
- 1:42:23to you gate. Literally found out during Bowl
- 1:42:25practice. Oh Broncos.
- 1:42:27Leaving like oh shit. He is.
- 1:42:32What are we supposed to do here? So yep, we're both on the SMU
- 1:42:37training to win up there. All right?
- 1:42:39This is a really interesting matchup.
- 1:42:42Next prime keys at Bowl. It seems like every year this
- 1:42:46bowl is a really good match up down in Orlando, this year's no
- 1:42:49different, Clemson versus Iowa State.
- 1:42:52What do you got on this one, man?
- 1:42:56You know, this was a hard one for me because Iowa State's
- 1:42:59probably played better overall, but Clemson played better.
- 1:43:04I think the clothes the year out there also losing their
- 1:43:09offensive coordinator. I think just from a consistency
- 1:43:13standpoint. I'm going to go Iowa State here.
- 1:43:16All right, writers, Iowa State. I think the big piece for
- 1:43:21Clemson and while I'm picking them is even though they're
- 1:43:24losing, Tony Elliott. Streeters taken over Street, has
- 1:43:28been in DJ's, are all year. DJ's played better also think on
- 1:43:33this one, it's going to be an ugly game.
- 1:43:36I think, I don't know what the over-under is on this one.
- 1:43:39I have not looked at up. I take the under because you got
- 1:43:42to hard-nosed defense. Has it really can play?
- 1:43:44I think the offensive Alan of a guy like DJ or ship layer.
- 1:43:49Justin Ross can't remember. I think John Ross, might have
- 1:43:52opted out. I think Clemson has 1 or 2 more
- 1:43:54Playmakers to win this game, something like 2317.
- 1:43:59Okay, I get some interesting here Oklahoma.
- 1:44:06Again, the we're going to leave you bowl.
- 1:44:08Oklahoma, organ in the Alamo Bowl.
- 1:44:12Oh man. Lanning, they're venables.
- 1:44:20Gee, I don't know to picking this game kind of stain from
- 1:44:23this one because we keep records of this.
- 1:44:26I'm gonna pick you gotta pick. Oh go organ.
- 1:44:30I feel like organ. It wasn't as a shot as it was to
- 1:44:37Oklahoma. Like I think Oregon kind of knew
- 1:44:40in the back of their mind, if Miami comes open, Mario's
- 1:44:42probably going to leave So I'll take Warden, I'm not with that.
- 1:44:48I think I think Oklahoma has a little bit more consistency in
- 1:44:51terms of the interim that they put in place and things like
- 1:44:56that. So I think that Oklahoma is
- 1:44:58going to be in a better situation.
- 1:45:00Who is interim down, Oklahoma right now, did they put Stoops
- 1:45:04in there? Oh yes Tim says yeah you're
- 1:45:07right yeah I don't know who the organ one is.
- 1:45:10I just think it's a lot of bitter pills to swallow their
- 1:45:13even though Rattlers off the team with a couple other guys.
- 1:45:16I'll take Orion I'll say this. I think that games going to go
- 1:45:19way over. Yeah.
- 1:45:21Way over as the Alamo Bowl seems every year to go over.
- 1:45:25I don't think I've ever seen Alamo Bowl go under and I'm
- 1:45:28probably wrong. All right.
- 1:45:31Dear Lord. Did you see the potato bowl last
- 1:45:34night? I did, did you see The Dumping
- 1:45:37of the potatoes? It was epic.
- 1:45:39It was but Shane, Beamer and Mack Brown.
- 1:45:43Have both said if they win, they're going to take the
- 1:45:45mayonnaise bath. The Dukes Mayo Bowl, UNC versus
- 1:45:49U SC South Carolina. Brian.
- 1:45:54Who do you have in this game? Shane or the team.
- 1:46:00We probably hate the most. You know what?
- 1:46:03This is a game of the overachievers versus The
- 1:46:07Underachievers. And I'm going to take the
- 1:46:08overachievers, I'm going to take the fighting Shane beavers.
- 1:46:13All right? All right, I'm going to be exact
- 1:46:16opposite of you on that, man. I'm going to take the
- 1:46:18Underachievers with the month to prep. and hold on the same how
- 1:46:26playing that's going to be about a turning factor is saying how
- 1:46:30playing Is Sam how playing if Sam health plan on taking you
- 1:46:36and see if not? I'm gonna follow you.
- 1:46:39I haven't seen, I haven't followed him enough to.
- 1:46:42Alright well hold on a second. I'm gonna get this while I type
- 1:46:46it up back here. That's what I use.
- 1:46:48He's playing in the bowl game. Yep, give me you and seek Give
- 1:46:53me U and prep. All right.
- 1:46:58The Hendon hooker Bowl. The Music City Bowl, Tennessee
- 1:47:02versus Purdue hopes going to roll.
- 1:47:07Purdue Purdue does not have a good defense.
- 1:47:09It's probably going to be a good shootout.
- 1:47:11I think Tennessee has more talent and hooker.
- 1:47:15Yeah, I'm taking the fighting hookers as well.
- 1:47:17So give me Tennessee. I think they it's not a blowout
- 1:47:22but I think they handle a pretty good start to finish.
- 1:47:26All right, next this is where we kind of get into some of the
- 1:47:30better bowls. The Peach Bowl Pit without Kenny
- 1:47:35Pickett. And it hasn't finalists and
- 1:47:40Michigan State without Kenneth Walker on best running backs in
- 1:47:44the country this year. Who are you taking in this game
- 1:47:49of the best players on our offense aren't playing?
- 1:47:54I'm taking Michigan State and I'm taking them solely because I
- 1:47:58think running back is an easier position to replace.
- 1:48:01And I think that if it had Kenny Pickett, I'd be all over pit
- 1:48:06because of Michigan, State's secondary, Bethany, picket
- 1:48:11without Kenny picket. It's Michigan State.
- 1:48:13Absolutely. You, you took the words out of
- 1:48:16my mouth. Michigan, state is so bad on the
- 1:48:18back end, pick it probably could have made himself a few more.
- 1:48:24Probably went from being the 15 to 20, the potentially being a
- 1:48:27top ten pick, if he plays in this game, but he doesn't, you
- 1:48:30know, you know what it is right after doing that fake slide
- 1:48:33bullshit Kenny's fucking afraid that he does that again, he will
- 1:48:37get his fucking head taken off by somebody.
- 1:48:39I'm sure Mel puckered be like, oh, he looks like he's gonna
- 1:48:41slide, just go for it. Michigan, State roles.
- 1:48:46I think they win by two touchdowns because you go throw
- 1:48:50a guy who's throwing the ball, 24 times out there against that.
- 1:48:53I don't have any Discrepancy gets all right, here's an
- 1:48:57interesting one. Brian Vegas Bowl which this
- 1:49:01bowl. Now, remember, Vegas Bowl used
- 1:49:04to be the Bowl before Christmas. Now one of the bowls right near
- 1:49:07New Year's. Wow I'm shocked.
- 1:49:09But the big nice, new stadium. I wonder why they've done that.
- 1:49:14Arizona state Wisconsin, can the ACC get a time.
- 1:49:16We're not playing at UNLV Stadium when you know, their
- 1:49:19plan. Oh wait.
- 1:49:22I mean I feel like Everybody should be stomping like, listen,
- 1:49:30we need to rotate this bowl. Game amongst all five of us, so
- 1:49:33we can always send somebody there because we know we will
- 1:49:35sell out. Yep, Wisconsin's own estate.
- 1:49:39What do you say? You know, I think I'm going to
- 1:49:45go with Zone to stay here, Wisconsin, little down this
- 1:49:48year, in terms of what we were used to from them.
- 1:49:55You know, they might not have a certain coach on their staff at
- 1:49:59some point in the near future. So I don't know if that's that's
- 1:50:03a change. So I'm gonna go with Zone,
- 1:50:05estate here. Okay, but you play to win the
- 1:50:08game, you play to win the game Herm, place to win the game
- 1:50:12both. In 4.
- 1:50:17Both up and down. I just feel like Wisconsin was
- 1:50:20more consistent. They had some games this year,
- 1:50:23they could have probably won and they lost I'm gonna go
- 1:50:25Wisconsin. Even though a certain person
- 1:50:28might not be there, we don't know the full status of that
- 1:50:32yet. We're still waiting on it.
- 1:50:33We're really hoping it happens but until it's announced we're
- 1:50:37going to keep your mouth shut but the but everything's out
- 1:50:42there. Everything's blowing, you know,
- 1:50:44you're seeing Wisconsin fans talking about it openly.
- 1:50:46Me and Brian Gator Bowl. Wake or whoever the hell he
- 1:50:52play. I'm taking week I'm taking wait
- 1:50:56to move on Texas A&M as we talked about earlier out because
- 1:51:01of the virus protocol. Personally I think Texas A&M
- 1:51:06just in one playing the game. They probably have like six guys
- 1:51:09that are in virus protocol and they're like, we can't make it.
- 1:51:13It's it's not what they want to do because they want to play in
- 1:51:17big games like New Year's Day games, All right, we got a
- 1:51:22couple more before we hit the New Year's Day and the two big
- 1:51:26ones on New Year's Eve. Yep, right Brian.
- 1:51:30The Sun Bowl, Miami versus Wazoo Miami kind of good down the
- 1:51:36stretch. I'm going to take Miami in this
- 1:51:39game was ooh, even though they're keeping actually take
- 1:51:43that back, I forgot lawsuit. Hired their interim, didn't they
- 1:51:45Hua? Zhu by 20?
- 1:51:51Yeah, I'm going to I'm going to stick with Miami.
- 1:51:54I think they they pull it out. All right.
- 1:51:57The crystal ball is coaching the game of having some involvement.
- 1:52:00I'd go that. But remember while Zoo fire role
- 1:52:03of it earlier in the year than higher, as interim, they were
- 1:52:06borderline going to make the Pac-12 Championship.
- 1:52:09Had a chance. We'll go there.
- 1:52:11All right, the Arizona bowl by Barstool Boise vs Central
- 1:52:16Michigan. Do you say on this one?
- 1:52:19I'm going to take Central Michigan here.
- 1:52:23The pimp, ya gotta support for a guys support pantomime with you
- 1:52:29Boise. Definitely?
- 1:52:30Not their usual brand, kind of down this year, so I'm with you.
- 1:52:36I am Brian. Those games are actually New
- 1:52:39Year's Eve. So like that on your calendar,
- 1:52:43the next games are New Year's Day and then we're gonna double
- 1:52:45back for the playoff games, Outback Bowl, Arkansas versus
- 1:52:50Penn State. Brian, I'm just Be straight up
- 1:52:54with you Arkansas has impressed me all year.
- 1:52:57Penn State does not have Brent pry, he's a hokie now Penn
- 1:53:01State. I'm not sure of the opt out, but
- 1:53:03just give me Arkansas. I think it's just one of those
- 1:53:06games where that team competed with everyone they played with
- 1:53:11the exception of Georgia to Bama to the Limit, give me Arkansas.
- 1:53:14First, big bowl for a for them in a while.
- 1:53:17Yeah, I'm gonna lean Arkansas here as well, and for many of
- 1:53:21the reasons that you said, I think Brent, pry Factor
- 1:53:24obviously in place and then you've got some trickle down to
- 1:53:30the other positions with opt outs and things like that.
- 1:53:33So I think the combination of those two, I think Arkansas.
- 1:53:36It's theirs to lose. All right, well the new year.
- 1:53:40Six bowls right here. Brian we've already discussed
- 1:53:43one Notre Dame Fighting Irish against Oklahoma state, two of
- 1:53:47the best defenses in the country.
- 1:53:49Who do you got in this? What looks like potential
- 1:53:52defensive struggle down in the desert.
- 1:53:58I want to I want to give this one a state, I think.
- 1:54:02Okay. I was leaning Irish, but I think
- 1:54:07I think okey state has probably a bad taste in their mouth, the
- 1:54:09way they things, wrapped up for them.
- 1:54:11I think they want to get one back.
- 1:54:13All right, I would agree with you there.
- 1:54:16Most of the time, but I think in this case, Hiring Marcus
- 1:54:22Freeman. Keeping that continue to going
- 1:54:25on Tommy re staying on his offensive coordinator and you
- 1:54:30talk about a bounce-back. How do you bounce back from
- 1:54:34literally jumping two inches short, If that kid takes off,
- 1:54:40two inches later. One step later half a step
- 1:54:43later, there's discussion that they're playing Alabama in the
- 1:54:48Cotton Bowl. I don't think the bounce-back
- 1:54:50happens. I think the Irish win this game,
- 1:54:52I still think it's going to be, it's gonna be a hard hitting
- 1:54:54this going to be a tight game, but give me the Irish.
- 1:54:59All right. But all right, in the Citrus
- 1:55:01Bowl, we've got Iowa versus Kentucky, man.
- 1:55:06This is another under Fest here. Who are you, taking Getting
- 1:55:09actually I'll leave this one on. Give me Iowa.
- 1:55:13Give me I owe on this one. I think I was a little more
- 1:55:15consistent. I'll take Iowa, I'll take
- 1:55:23Kentucky. I like their way of controlling
- 1:55:25the clock control, the flow of the game.
- 1:55:26So I think they're going to do that a little bit better than
- 1:55:29Iowa overall over under 12, possessions, for this game under
- 1:55:38everybody, they're going to have everybody's getting five drive,
- 1:55:42six minutes of peace, be ready for them.
- 1:55:45I actually be ready for what Iowa or Kentucky, have the
- 1:55:4811-play 89 yard drive that literally, last, there's going
- 1:55:52to be four of those. What are you talking about?
- 1:55:55Prime prime looking for a parlay that I want to go over 8 48,
- 1:56:01plus minute drives. All right, Ron granddaddy of
- 1:56:04them, all Rose Bowl, Utah versus Ohio.
- 1:56:08State, what do you think on this one?
- 1:56:12I think it's going to be Ohio State.
- 1:56:13I think they're going to be able to throw the ball a lot better
- 1:56:15than they did against Michigan. I think that's going to be the
- 1:56:17difference. I like Utah.
- 1:56:20But I think I say she's gonna have a little too much gas.
- 1:56:24I agree with you. Ohio State little bit too much
- 1:56:26gas. You told good defensively.
- 1:56:28Got the right quarterback. Finally got rid of Charlie
- 1:56:30Brewer, sent him over to Liberty over that kidneys to retire.
- 1:56:34Seriously, I think it's one of those games Utah hangs in there
- 1:56:39until about late third quarter. Ohio State puts the hammer down.
- 1:56:43They end up winning like 3824 3828.
- 1:56:46I think is going to be a good game but eventually that Sugar
- 1:56:51Bowl you want to talk about to contrast in Styles Lane kiffin
- 1:56:56and Ole Miss wide open. Go for it on fourth down sling,
- 1:57:00it all over the place versus Dave, Aranda and Baylor, slow it
- 1:57:04down. Play tough nose defense, Do you
- 1:57:07like tough? No defense, Brian?
- 1:57:09Or do you like slinging around? I like slinging around as much
- 1:57:13as the next person, but I think tough news defense wins this
- 1:57:15one. So I'm going to take Baylor All
- 1:57:18right, I'm going to go against you as much as I want to agree
- 1:57:23that tough nose. Usually win.
- 1:57:24Most of the time I think Lane is feeling himself, I think he's
- 1:57:30going to throw a few really, really trick plays out.
- 1:57:33And I think, I think Ole Miss ends up winning this one.
- 1:57:39Well, Brian, we have got to number 28 and 29.
- 1:57:45The big ones we are 2 minutes, 2 hours, and 10 minutes in.
- 1:57:50We expected, keep the last about 30, but I think the second you
- 1:57:54pull him on before, when we were doing the pregame I think we
- 1:57:59probably can you do right there? Like yeah, this is go run more
- 1:58:02than 30. We're going more than the fact
- 1:58:05with Keith is a Again, I go back to thinking 94 and I'm like,
- 1:58:09dude, you play with all these guys crazy.
- 1:58:12But um, something we talked about in the pre 1993 94 and 95
- 1:58:20were the precursors to what we have today with the business.
- 1:58:24And then this in 1994 and Penn State didn't play the Braska 93
- 1:58:29would Notre Dame. Didn't get a chance at Nebraska
- 1:58:33It started where we're at today and it's why we're going to be
- 1:58:36at 12 in just a few short years. Yeah, I said 12 Wing going to 8
- 1:58:40but Brian the Cotton Bowl. Cinderella Cincinnati versus the
- 1:58:45Death Star in Alabama. Yep you started the last one.
- 1:58:50I'm going to start this one. I think this is going to be more
- 1:58:53of a game than people think. I think pickles got a hell of a
- 1:58:57defensive mind and I think where we have seen it is at times.
- 1:59:04Bama gets good defense as struggle.
- 1:59:07Now the breaking news today. I can't flip my prediction with
- 1:59:13Bill O'Brien and Doug Marrone. The o.c., the quarterback coach
- 1:59:16in the offensive line coach being out there in buyers
- 1:59:18protocol. So they're going to be at the
- 1:59:21game coaching but they're not going to be there for install.
- 1:59:26I think Bama wins this one but I think this is a hell of a lot
- 1:59:29closer than the experts thing. It's that 14, or at like 13 to
- 1:59:34half, I think this is like an eight or nine point.
- 1:59:38I think it's closer than that. I think it's a touchdown late to
- 1:59:42give it to, Bam. I still think Bama pulls it out,
- 1:59:45but this is going to show that A G5 really good G5, team can
- 1:59:52belong in this scenario and it's going to set the stage for when
- 1:59:55we get to 12. A G5 team deserves a shot every
- 1:59:59year just like compete by teams. Ask Brian I sent him a soliloquy
- 2:00:05and a essay on the 12 team playoff, which we might talk
- 2:00:09about in the early part of next year.
- 2:00:11Brian got to read about 8,000 words.
- 2:00:14Sorry, buddy. All right.
- 2:00:17Last one. Orange bolt down in Miami.
- 2:00:21Georgia versus Michigan. What do you think on this one?
- 2:00:25Brian? Lot of contrasting Styles here.
- 2:00:30You know what I think the biggest factor is going to be is
- 2:00:34that you know, Michigan is more or less riding a good wave right
- 2:00:39now and I think that you know, there's going to be a lot of
- 2:00:44continuity with their staff. They know who they're working
- 2:00:46with, they're not focused on other things.
- 2:00:49I think that's going to be the thing that carries Michigan over
- 2:00:51the top there, I'm with you. I'm with you consistency.
- 2:00:56I mean, these tubes are these two, teams are a lot of mirror
- 2:00:59images of each other, especially defensively.
- 2:01:02I think we're all offensively is Josh Gad is has a few more
- 2:01:06tricks up his sleeves than Georgia does, I think George has
- 2:01:10run the ball. Take some shots screens, where
- 2:01:13you saw in the Iowa game Gaddis early, he Unleashed a few things
- 2:01:17on and I really think after seeing family do what they did
- 2:01:26and you know Will Anderson got a gal, a and Hutchinson On the
- 2:01:30edge with Michigan. I think, Michigan wins this game
- 2:01:3324:17 and I think it sets up for 12.
- 2:01:40Big programs to Big personalities at the national
- 2:01:44championship, which unfortunately is on a Monday
- 2:01:47night on Thursday. All right, buddy.
- 2:01:55This is our last episode of the year.
- 2:02:00And this has been one hell of a year. and I say that, because
- 2:02:16everything that's happened this year on this podcast, in our
- 2:02:21personal lives with Hokie Football, There's a lot of thank
- 2:02:29yous to go out. This year. when we started this
- 2:02:37thing about 22 months ago, I don't think we ever envisioned
- 2:02:45in the amount of followers. We have the amount of listens,
- 2:02:49you know? Last year, when we were
- 2:02:52averaging, what? 75 listens.
- 2:02:55Write something a little bit higher than that.
- 2:02:57But yeah, you learn that we were still building.
- 2:03:00We're still building. And I mean in what the last six
- 2:03:05months, what six months we've doubled.
- 2:03:08We're pretty much 500 an episode now, which is You know, that's a
- 2:03:14credit to everybody listening right now.
- 2:03:16It's a credit to We Appreciate been.
- 2:03:19Yeah, it's a credit to y'all sticking with us and thinking
- 2:03:22that we're bringing something different to the table than
- 2:03:25that's out there. Yeah, we really appreciate it
- 2:03:28because believe it or not, we would be probably talking two
- 2:03:33plus hours of hokey Football in college football, regardless
- 2:03:36during the week, And that's why we decided to do it.
- 2:03:39We're going to do this anyway. We might as well put something
- 2:03:42out here and people here listen to what people have to say about
- 2:03:45what we think you guys have been awesome.
- 2:03:48Interacting whether it be through, DM's messages ratings
- 2:03:53reviews on, it's really been, it's really been awesome.
- 2:04:00And you know, this year, we've had so many guests and, you
- 2:04:05know, we're going to thank everyone.
- 2:04:07I'm starting. I'm with, you know, you know
- 2:04:1024/7 with Evan joining us back in February, the white Vic If we
- 2:04:18had to wait, we've had read ciancia joining us back in in
- 2:04:23the summer. Christina Garnett jumped on with
- 2:04:27us when we were looking at the marketing of the program,
- 2:04:30obviously the great Legend Darrell tap, the older of the
- 2:04:35lunch pail. Yeah, exactly.
- 2:04:38And we just saw this last week, we had Jeremy counts and
- 2:04:42Jonathan tally. Jump on with us whole lot of fun
- 2:04:46friends, chopped it up. Up, Mike McDaniel, joining us,
- 2:04:49back in the summer, was a great episode where I think we all had
- 2:04:53we might have had one too many drinks that night with Mike had
- 2:04:55a great time for my hokey offensive.
- 2:04:57Lineman Austin Cannon here in the r-va, joined us getting
- 2:05:01ready for camp on the so many guys and I did we get everybody
- 2:05:07brand. We forgot our good buddy.
- 2:05:09Robbie Compton joining us for the, the camp episode as well.
- 2:05:14So coach Robbie company, who will be A joining us definitely
- 2:05:18in the early part of next year, Rob, he's already agreed to help
- 2:05:23us. Take a look at some event prize
- 2:05:24defensive tape and do that break down from his perspective as a
- 2:05:28defensive coach and defensive coordinator.
- 2:05:30So lots of thank yous and Brian. I'm not going to be a miss that.
- 2:05:39We also lost somebody this year. When we will y'all heard about
- 2:05:45it back during the Syracuse week?
- 2:05:47Our buddy, Brian Wilkerson, capacitor this year.
- 2:05:51It's a piece of my hokey, you know, heart that's gone forever.
- 2:05:58It's a it's a buddy who would chime in on this podcast who
- 2:06:02would text and give a shit if we said something he didn't like.
- 2:06:07And so I'm going to say this and I mentioned to you before, but
- 2:06:11I'm going to dedicate this Season two bronze memory going
