Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Morning, Ben. Good morning, guys. Good morning. It feels like
- 0:04Speaker 1: every week these days I'm bringing you in a re-release.
- 0:06Speaker 1: I mean, last week was the 25th anniversary of Fast
- 0:10Speaker 1: and Furious. Fast and Furious. We've had Top Gun. And honestly,
- 0:14Speaker 1: most of them are a shameless money grab, if we're
- 0:16Speaker 1: being honest. Well, of course. So they're tapping into our nostalgia.
- 0:20Speaker 1: And at best, you go to the cinema and maybe
- 0:22Speaker 1: you have a trip down memory lane. You get a
- 0:25Speaker 1: reminder that these classic movies are better on the big
- 0:27Speaker 1: screen than they are on your flat screen TV in
- 0:30Speaker 1: the lounge room. And you forget that you've just paid
- 0:32Speaker 1: $ 100 on movie tickets and a candy bar. But Terminator
- 0:36Speaker 1: 2 Judgment Day, it hits different. Oh, my gosh. So
- 0:40Speaker 1: the 35th anniversary of the James Cameron blockbuster classic is
- 0:45Speaker 1: so relevant today. God, I feel old. Oh, my gosh.
- 0:48Speaker 1: I know. You watch this story about the machine apocalypse
- 0:52Speaker 1: and trying to prevent AI... leading us all to our doom.
- 0:55Speaker 1: And you're just watching it and just going, oh, my goodness,
- 0:58Speaker 1: this is a bit close to home. He foresaw it.
- 1:01Speaker 1: It is more relevant now than it was back in
- 1:05Speaker 1: 1991 when it came out. It's incredible. And, of course,
- 1:08Speaker 1: it's iconic. Like, you've got this incredible performance by Arnold
- 1:12Speaker 1: Schwarzenegger as the T-800 Terminator in the first movie, which
- 1:16Speaker 1: was a really sort of lean, brutal action film. In
- 1:20Speaker 1: the second one, he's gone from killing machine to protector.
- 1:24Speaker 1: It's his job to kind of save humanity, to save
- 1:27Speaker 1: little Eddie Furlong, who, if we remember back to the time,
- 1:30Speaker 1: he was plucked out of obscurity. I think he was
- 1:33Speaker 1: in a video game arcade or something like that when
- 1:35Speaker 1: James Cameron's like, you, we need you with your sort
- 1:38Speaker 1: of floppy fringe to come in. Yeah, no, he was perfect.
- 1:41Speaker 1: What a life-changing moment. And he became sort of a
- 1:43Speaker 1: 90s heartthrob. Look, his acting is maybe not the best,
- 1:46Speaker 1: but he was only 13. Give the kid a break.
- 1:47Speaker 1: You know, who could forget Linda Hamilton doing chin-ups? Well,
- 1:50Speaker 1: the original boss bitch. Doing chin-ups. And this was at
- 1:52Speaker 1: a time when... A lot of women in movies were
- 1:54Speaker 1: either eye candy or damsels in distress. Linda Hamilton was
- 1:58Speaker 1: kicking butt. She was like a true action hero in
- 2:03Speaker 1: this movie. And then, of course, you've got the lines.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Hasta la vista, baby. I'll be back. Like some of
- 2:10Speaker 1: these are still in use today. Absolutely. It's just absolutely
- 2:13Speaker 1: legendary pop culture moment. And the action sequences, you know,
- 2:17Speaker 1: you've got that truck diving off the overpass and in
- 2:20Speaker 1: the spillway. Watching the trailer, I mean, this thing still
- 2:23Speaker 1: holds up. Oh, my gosh. The special effects of Robert
- 2:26Speaker 1: Patrick's T-1000 Terminator, the liquid metal guy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like,
- 2:31Speaker 1: I was expecting that to look a bit janky. Yeah.
- 2:33Speaker 1: It looks really good. And the sound. Oh, the sound.
- 2:36Speaker 1: The Guns N' Roses, You Could Be Mine song. Oh,
- 2:38Speaker 1: that's right. There's one criticism. I think James Cameron could
- 2:40Speaker 1: have used that song a bit better. Watching it back,
- 2:43Speaker 1: I feel like today we're maybe a little bit better
- 2:45Speaker 1: at incorporating those songs into action movies. But gosh, it's
- 2:50Speaker 1: such a roller coaster. It's visceral. It moves at an
- 2:54Speaker 1: incredible pace with a break every now and then from
- 2:56Speaker 1: the action sequences to add some depth to the plot.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And this idea that giant corporations are going to be
- 3:02Speaker 1: creating ai technology just you know with the best of
- 3:06Speaker 1: intentions they're not trying to do anything evil uh and
- 3:08Speaker 1: oh how we laugh and then and the bloke who's
- 3:11Speaker 1: responsible for it goes how am i supposed to know
- 3:13Speaker 1: when he finds out that what's what is his stuff
- 3:15Speaker 1: is going to turn into and she's like oh geez
- 3:17Speaker 1: that sounds pretty familiar and now we've got the ai
- 3:20Speaker 1: droid games happening in china so and they're all running
- 3:24Speaker 1: like that liquid guy exactly exactly the crazy thing about
- 3:27Speaker 1: it is So in this movie, like humanity ends in
- 3:29Speaker 1: this kind of like, you know, sort of nuclear fire
- 3:32Speaker 1: apocalypse because the AI launched the nukes. In real life,
- 3:38Speaker 1: in our world, it's going to happen with like the
- 3:40Speaker 1: Earth's natural resources exhausted because we're prompting chat GPT to
- 3:44Speaker 1: imagine us at the Met Gala. Like how embarrassing. So
- 3:49Speaker 1: what you're saying is if you didn't see it the
- 3:51Speaker 1: first time in 1991, it's a chance to catch it
- 3:55Speaker 1: the way it should be seen. Absolutely see this. Absolutely
- 3:57Speaker 1: see this in 4K in the cinema. Take your kids
- 4:00Speaker 1: who won't even know any of the characters, never heard
- 4:02Speaker 1: of Arnie before. If you have a team, take them
- 4:05Speaker 1: to see this movie. They'll be blown away. How many
- 4:08Speaker 1: Nostradamus moments are you giving it? Four and a half.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Four and a half? I was amazed at how well
- 4:13Speaker 1: this film aged. It's so good. They might be hearing
- 4:16Speaker 1: this music again. After 35 years. Right. So good. Quite possible. Thanks, Ben. Thanks, Ben. Thanks, guys.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Catch you with something new next week. Hopefully.
