- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. Oh sorry, it's the first day of
- 0:15the new year and you might be very tired after a late night.
- 0:18Hello friends, it's Sean here. But whatever is going on, it is
- 0:23indeed the 1st of January. The whole new year begins today
- 0:27on this Thursday and you have well, very appropriately chosen
- 0:32to have a moment with me, your friend in your device, ready to
- 0:36read God's word together with you.
- 0:38And today is an absolute Corker. Luke wastes no time at all
- 0:43diving into the heart of Jesus teaching as here we find
- 0:47ourselves ready to hear Jesus Sermon on the Mount.
- 0:50Yes, that famous teaching of his turning everything we know to be
- 0:54true upside down and on its head to show people what the Kingdom
- 0:57of God actually looks like. So as this year begins, what a
- 1:01brilliant way to set the scene just in the right time.
- 1:05So friends, buckle yourselves up ready to have your mind blown.
- 1:09Holy Spirit, open our hearts and may we be stunned by your truth
- 1:14and your way as we read this your Word together.
- 1:19All right, friends, there is nothing more to do but to settle
- 1:23ourselves and read together Luke chapter 6.
- 1:36One Sabbath day, as Jesus was walking through some grain
- 1:39fields, his disciples broke off heads of grain, rubbed off the
- 1:43husks in their hands, and ate the grain.
- 1:45But some Pharisees said, Why are you breaking the law by
- 1:48harvesting grain on the Sabbath? Jesus replied, Haven't you read
- 1:53in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were
- 1:56hungry? He went into the House of God
- 1:59and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only
- 2:02the priests can eat. He also gave some to his
- 2:05companions. And Jesus added, The Son of Man
- 2:09is Lord even over the Sabbath. On another Sabbath day, a man
- 2:16with a deformed right hand was in the synagogue while Jesus was
- 2:19teaching. The teachers of the religious
- 2:21law and the Pharisees watched Jesus closely.
- 2:25If he healed the man's hand, they planned to accuse him of
- 2:28working on the Sabbath. But Jesus knew their thoughts.
- 2:32He said to the man with the deformed hand, Come and stand in
- 2:36front of everyone. So the man came forward.
- 2:39Then Jesus said to his critics, I have a question for you.
- 2:43Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day
- 2:46for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or
- 2:50destroy it? He looked around at them 1 by 1,
- 2:54and then said to the man, Hold out your hand.
- 2:58So the man held out his hand, and it was restored.
- 3:02At this, the enemies of Jesus were wild with rage and began to
- 3:05discuss what to do with him. One day soon afterward, Jesus
- 3:12went up to the mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night.
- 3:17At Daybreak he called together all of his disciples and chose
- 3:2012 of them to be apostles. Here are their names.
- 3:24Simon, whom he named Peter Andrew Peter's brother James
- 3:30John Philip Bartholomew Matthew Thomas James son of Alpheus.
- 3:38Simon who was called the Zealot. Judas son of James Judas
- 3:43Iscariot, who later betrayed him.
- 3:47When they came down from the mountain, the disciples stood
- 3:50with Jesus on a large level area, surrounded by many of his
- 3:54followers and by the crowds. There were people from all over
- 3:58Judea and from Jerusalem and from as far north as the
- 4:02seacoasts of Tyre and Saidon. They had come to hear him and to
- 4:07be healed of their diseases, and those troubled by evil spirits
- 4:11were healed. Everyone tried to touch him
- 4:14because healing power went out from him and he healed everyone.
- 4:20Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said, God blesses
- 4:24you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours.
- 4:28God blesses you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied.
- 4:33God blesses you who weep now, for in due time you will laugh.
- 4:38What blessings await you? And people hate you and exclude
- 4:42you and mock you and curse you as evil, because you follow the
- 4:45Son of Man. When that happens, be happy.
- 4:49Yes, leap for joy, for a great reward awaits you in heaven.
- 4:54And remember, their ancestors treated the ancient prophets
- 4:58that same way. What sorrow awaits you who are
- 5:02rich? For you have your only happiness
- 5:05now. What sorrow awaits you who are
- 5:08fat and prosperous now? For a time of awful hunger
- 5:11awaits you. What sorrow awaits you who laugh
- 5:15now, for your laughter will turn to mourning and sorrow.
- 5:19What sorrow awaits you who are praised by the crowds for their
- 5:24ancestors, also praised false prophets?
- 5:28But to you who are willing to listen, I say love your enemies,
- 5:33do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray
- 5:38for those who hurt you. If someone slaps you on one
- 5:41cheek, offer the other cheek also.
- 5:44If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also.
- 5:48Give to anyone who asks, and when things are taken away from
- 5:52you, don't try to get them back. Do to others as you would like
- 5:56them to do to you. If you love only those who love
- 6:00you, why should you get credit for that?
- 6:03Even sinners love those who love them.
- 6:05If you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you
- 6:09get credit? Even sinners do that much.
- 6:12And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, why
- 6:16should you get credit? Even sinners will lend to other
- 6:19sinners for a full return. Love your enemies, do good to
- 6:24them, lend to them without expecting to be repaid.
- 6:28Then your reward from Heaven will be very great and you will
- 6:31truly be acting as children of the Most High, For He is kind to
- 6:36those who are unthankful and wicked.
- 6:39You must be compassionate just as your Father is compassionate.
- 6:45Do not judge others and you will not be judged.
- 6:48Do not condemn others or it will all come back against you.
- 6:53Forgive others and you will be forgiven.
- 6:55Give and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in
- 7:00full, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more,
- 7:04running over and poured into your lap.
- 7:07The amount you give will determine the amount you get
- 7:10back. Then Jesus gave the following
- 7:13illustration. Can one blind person lead
- 7:16another? Won't they both fall into a
- 7:18ditch? Students are not greater than
- 7:20their teacher, but the student who is fully trained will become
- 7:24like the teacher. And why worry about a speck in
- 7:28your friend's eye when you have a log in your own eye?
- 7:31How can you think of saying, friend, let me help you get rid
- 7:35of that speck in your eye when you can't see past the log in
- 7:39your own eye? Hypocrite.
- 7:41First get rid of the log in your own eye.
- 7:44Then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your
- 7:46friend's eye. A good tree can't produce bad
- 7:51fruit, and a bad tree can't produce good fruit.
- 7:55A tree is identified by its fruit.
- 7:57Figs are never gathered from thorn bushes, and grapes are not
- 8:01picked from Bramble bushes. A good person produces good
- 8:05things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person
- 8:10produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart.
- 8:14What you say flows from what is in your heart.
- 8:19So why do you keep calling me Lord?
- 8:21Lord, when you don't do what I say, I will show you what it's
- 8:25like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then
- 8:29follows it. It is like a person building a
- 8:32house who digs deep and lays a foundation on solid rock.
- 8:37When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it
- 8:41stands firm because it is well built.
- 8:44But anyone who hears and doesn't obey is like a person who builds
- 8:48a house right on the ground without a foundation.
- 8:51When the floods sweep down against that house, it will
- 8:55collapse into a heap of ruins. Ah, Lord, we have indeed heard
- 9:10your word. We have heard your instructions
- 9:14and these teachings, they are fully against what the world
- 9:18would tell us is conventional wisdom.
- 9:21So, Lord, here as you instruct us to have deep foundations
- 9:25beneath our house, to live according to what we have heard
- 9:29you say. Lord, I pray that you give us
- 9:31wisdom and that you change our hearts so that we would want to
- 9:36follow you and your ways, your ways of generosity, your ways of
- 9:43love, your countercultural approach to the world.
- 9:48Ah, Lord, I pray that you soften our hearts, that we can look
- 9:52beyond our own needs and our own desires to see your Kingdom.
- 9:56And may your kingdom's priorities become the deepest
- 10:01desire of our hearts. Jesus, thank you that you don't
- 10:06only come and challenge us with your teaching, but you come to
- 10:10save us when we get it wrong. So in your loving arms, we just
- 10:15claim your love, Your provision, and Your grace, even when we
- 10:20don't deserve it. But we are yours, and we love
- 10:24you. And we pray all of this in your
- 10:27amazing name, Jesus, Amen.
