- 0:05Welcome back to the Payment Shed podcast.
- 0:07Today we are joined by Jess Holgrave, CEO of Wallet Connect.
- 0:10Firstly, thank you Jess. Tell us a little bit more about
- 0:13you. So I'm Jess Holgrave, CEO of
- 0:15Wallet Connect. Wallet Connect is a network that
- 0:18comprises about 700 different wallets and over 60,000
- 0:22different applications in web 3. So we allow wallets and apps to
- 0:26connect and communicate with each other and and it's that
- 0:30interoperability. We work across chain, across
- 0:32asset, across device to facilitate these these
- 0:37interactions. Fantastic.
- 0:39So we anticipate you mentioned before 400 billion in network
- 0:42volume. What's driving that growth,
- 0:45right? It's incredible, but what's
- 0:46really driving the force? So that's the volume that our
- 0:51network will process this year. About 65% of that is D5 S
- 0:55decentralized finance, things like staking, lending and, and
- 0:59other things. Well, some of the fastest
- 1:01growing areas are #1 institutional capital.
- 1:04So these are funds that hold crypto, but they want to do more
- 1:08now than just hold crypto. They want to stake those assets.
- 1:11They want to use those assets in payments flows and other things.
- 1:14The second like really big driver has been payments and
- 1:17stablecoins is obviously like the top topic for everybody at
- 1:21the moment, partly driven by regulation and things like the
- 1:23Genius Act. And so we are seeing more and
- 1:26more payments providers coming onto the network in a way that
- 1:30enables that them to accept crypto payments from any of the
- 1:33wallets. So this makes it really
- 1:36interoperable for end users and for businesses, for PSPS and for
- 1:40all of their merchants to accept crypto, manage crypto payouts
- 1:44and even do things. One of the things we launched
- 1:47recently was a point of sale SDK.
- 1:49So the point of sale devices, you can now just scan the
- 1:52wallet, connect QR code and instigate A crypto native
- 1:56payment. Fantastic, pretty impressive.
- 1:59Now when we talk about embedded finance, yes, it's a buzzword,
- 2:02but actually everybody's using it, right.
- 2:04And if they're not using it, everyone's get involved in using
- 2:07it. How are user control models, do
- 2:10you think playing their part in enabling that growth of of the
- 2:12embedded finance ecosystem? So I think in crypto, this idea
- 2:17of the user being able to control their assets and their
- 2:19data is really cool to the industry.
- 2:21At at its heart, what it means is providing a wallet in this
- 2:25case and the private key that controls that wallet, the
- 2:29tooling to enable me as an end user to disclose my information,
- 2:34to make a payment, to control my assets.
- 2:36So in in some ways crypto is like one of the O GS of embedded
- 2:40finance because it really is puts the user right at the
- 2:43centre and it's interoperable because I can take that wallet
- 2:47anywhere across Web 3. So I think when as we see this
- 2:50integration of crypto and traditional finance, we're
- 2:54seeing more and more of these things shared where traditional
- 2:58kind of Fintech or a traditional fintech, if you could call it
- 3:00that has crypto features applications themselves or
- 3:05embedding crypto. And I think for the user, it's
- 3:08going to eventually, hopefully, become a much more seamless
- 3:10journey across these two worlds. Where's the risk do you think
- 3:13for for two things there. One is the risk to consumers,
- 3:16yeah, right. And two, we talk about payment
- 3:18companies, gateways, acquirers wanting to get involved in the
- 3:21world. There's always been a slight
- 3:23concern of the kind of categorisation of card volume
- 3:27where's and also the risk to them, do you think?
- 3:29I mean, I think So what is really interesting when you
- 3:32think about card volumes is that today one of the hot topics is
- 3:36like crypto backed cards. But what that looks like is I'm
- 3:39connecting a wallet basically doing it at time of transaction
- 3:44conversion into Fiat and then it's running purely on those
- 3:47card rails from that point onwards.
- 3:50One of the things that that we are seeing demand for is this
- 3:53new point of sale SDK, which may means that the transaction is
- 3:57actually crypto native from the moment that it's initiated
- 4:00through the PSP until it's settled to the merchant and then
- 4:04it can be converted into Fiat for that last settlement leg.
- 4:07It completely bypasses the the card networks.
- 4:10For an end user, this kind of is like for like, but for merchants
- 4:14obviously it gives them potentially the ability to save
- 4:16quite a lot on acquiring fees. So we are saying, we are saying
- 4:20again, it's very early days, don't.
- 4:22Get don't. Get too excited because there's
- 4:23still a lot of work for better user experience, but I think
- 4:26it's something that's that is top of people's minds.
- 4:29It's like, how do we disrupt the old way of, of, of doing
- 4:32acquiring? I think having said that,
- 4:34though, there are still a lot of challenges still to overcome.
- 4:37User experience is one of them. Still quite painful when you're
- 4:40using crypto today. We're trying to solve a lot of
- 4:43that. Not needing to know which asset
- 4:46my chain is on, not needing to know the difference between the
- 4:49108 different stable coins that are all USD.
- 4:52Something. So there's still something that
- 4:55that the industry needs to needs to work on in order so that end
- 4:59users have a safe and secure experience.
- 5:02When we talk about interoperability and and stable
- 5:05coin, we know it's huge. We we talk about Web 3 and we
- 5:08hear it every single day. What does Web 3 mean to you as
- 5:12an individual within this ecosystem?
- 5:16I guess on the the personal side, I think self custody or
- 5:18the right to self custody is really important.
- 5:20That doesn't necessarily mean that everybody will want to self
- 5:23custody, but giving people that option to do that and also to
- 5:28not be completely cut out from the traditional financial world
- 5:31is really important. So we've been working as a
- 5:33company on lots of things like travel rule verification or
- 5:37message signing capabilities for wallets so that they can
- 5:41interact with the more traditional financial services
- 5:44in a like seamless and compliant way.
- 5:47So that's one thing that that's super important for me because I
- 5:49think that over time, individuals, especially from
- 5:53some particular places around the world will want the ability
- 5:56to, to really control and, and hold their own assets.
- 5:59And, and then I think the second thing is that we see just so
- 6:02much demand for these better rails.
- 6:04How do we make all of this way more efficient, which ultimately
- 6:07doesn't even need to be about self custody, but it's about
- 6:11with, you know, removing some of these actors from the ecosystem
- 6:15who are very rent extractive whilst continuing to provide a
- 6:18better service for for consumers.
- 6:21Fantastic. Look, we're here at Money 2020.
- 6:23What's kind of being your highlights so far?
- 6:25Your low lights? And I think that the highlights
- 6:29is having been here for several years now, this year feels like
- 6:33the year where most of the questions about crypto are
- 6:36actually really sophisticated people.
- 6:39It's not no longer like, oh, what should we be doing or what
- 6:41does this mean? Or isn't crypto just a scam?
- 6:44And it's they're really sophisticated questions about,
- 6:47OK, if I'm thinking about doing this XY and Z, what do I need
- 6:49to, what do I need to do? And that for me marks this
- 6:52inflection point, I think for the industry where the
- 6:56traditional players are taking this very, very seriously and
- 6:59have actually woken up to the fact that they need a strategy
- 7:02and they need to need to do something.
- 7:05So I think that's probably the the highlight for me in terms of
- 7:09the low light. I mean, Vegas is always
- 7:11exhausting and the air conditioning is too much and
- 7:14dries out my skin. But I think that the other low
- 7:17light for me still continues to be like one or two conversations
- 7:21where, you know, people don't bother to take the time to
- 7:25really understand what crypto and and blockchain really is.
- 7:29And they can be quite dismissive of it without, you know, taking
- 7:33time to understand. So it's definitely out of the
- 7:35minority though, right? It was definitely the we rewind
- 7:374 or five years ago, it was very much cryptos coming to our
- 7:41world. It's full of scammers right now.
- 7:42It's my goodness, this is going to help me run my business and
- 7:45drive more revenue, right. Exactly.
- 7:47Fantastic. And the last question, Jess,
- 7:49I'll be asked all of our guests, the shelf of shame.
- 7:52What is your ick in this world? What grinds your gears in the
- 7:54payments industry? You know, I think, I think it's
- 7:58still really, really hard for merchants to understand all of
- 8:02the different layers and to get to to give them enough
- 8:07information to choose how they should do this.
- 8:10We know that payments is a really like lucrative space.
- 8:13That's why so many people build businesses there.
- 8:14It's also a really complex space, but I still think
- 8:18especially for some small merchants, you know, the cost
- 8:21that they pay for their payments is, is too high.
- 8:24It affects their margins so much that I I would love to see that
- 8:29side change. I think I agree with that.
- 8:31It used to just be the plain odd four or five party model, right?
- 8:34And now it's grown arms and legs and the four party models and
- 8:37individuals in that are now gaining their own four and five
- 8:40party models beside it, right? Yeah.
- 8:42And for a small merchant, you know, if you're, if you're like
- 8:46a mum and dad, sure. How do you even navigate all
- 8:48that? How do you learn about it in a
- 8:51way that you're not getting completely ripped off by
- 8:53somebody or it's not just taking too much of your time?
- 8:56Ultimately, it should be really simple for you.
- 8:58So how can we educate the length consumer?
- 9:00Right? Exactly.
- 9:01Fantastic, Jeff. Thank you so much for your time.
- 9:03Enjoy the rest of the show. Thanks.
- 9:05Thank you.
