- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
- 0:05Speaker 1: The rex was not chasing the jeep. Murray, Murray, you there.
- 0:09Speaker 1: You love sandwiches.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Huh, Let's go to eighty bo.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Wow.
- 0:16Speaker 1: That Prime Time maybe had a crush on Betty Rubble.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 2: to commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman was black.
- 0:25Speaker 1: He caught them the game last night, although they won
- 0:28Speaker 1: the game.
- 0:29Speaker 3: You're listening to Stu gottson Company.
- 0:31Speaker 2: It is Stegotson Company, presented by FanDuel and the FanDuel Sportsbook.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Mike Norvell is going to join us coming up here
- 0:39Speaker 2: at set number one, looking forward to that. The head
- 0:41Speaker 2: coach of the Florida State Seminoles very clearly squarely.
- 0:45Speaker 3: On the hot seat. We'll ask him about it.
- 0:48Speaker 2: But Taylor has been telling me since I gave a
- 0:51Speaker 2: take yesterday, and I have an idea of which take
- 0:53Speaker 2: it is, but that listeners have been writing into Taylor
- 0:58Speaker 2: that ste Gotts gave one of his worst takes of
- 1:00Speaker 2: all time yesterday?
- 1:02Speaker 3: What was the take? I have a feeling it's the
- 1:03Speaker 3: Seattle Seahawks take.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Is that it no so your takes were so bad yesterday.
- 1:08Speaker 4: I think you had multiple from people to choose from.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Really, wow, I mean you haven't listen. If you want
- 1:12Speaker 3: bad takes, I'll give you bad takes. You've heard nothing yet.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I mean, so, I guess I.
- 1:16Speaker 5: Love the idea. I love the idea of people walking
- 1:19Speaker 5: down the island shopping for Stu bad takes.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Worst take about that?
- 1:25Speaker 4: So the Seattle Seahawks kind of went right past people.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yes, why that was the worst take until I said
- 1:32Speaker 2: something else.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Yeah, so this this comes from Reddit. Somebody named my
- 1:37Speaker 4: piece on Reddit. He said Stu Gott saying Ryan Day
- 1:42Speaker 4: has the most job security of any college football coach
- 1:45Speaker 4: in the nation, and that Ryan Day could lose every
- 1:49Speaker 4: game this upcoming season and he'd still be Ohio State's
- 1:52Speaker 4: football coach. It's a terrible take, might be one of
- 1:54Speaker 4: the worst takes of all time.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I gotta tell you, I did not sleep well last
- 2:00Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm wrestling around in my bed. I'm trying
- 2:03Speaker 2: to get my eyes closed. I'm trying to keep them closed,
- 2:05Speaker 2: and I'm thinking, what's the reason. Why am I Why
- 2:08Speaker 2: am I having trouble sleeping? And then I realized that
- 2:11Speaker 2: I gave that take on national radio that if Ryan
- 2:15Speaker 2: Day loses all his games, which would include a loss
- 2:19Speaker 2: to Michigan, which would mean the AP preseason number one
- 2:23Speaker 2: team in America went winless, didn't beat Michigan, didn't make
- 2:27Speaker 2: the playoffs, that he would still have a job the
- 2:30Speaker 2: next season.
- 2:30Speaker 3: That's what kept me up the entire night.
- 2:33Speaker 4: So when you're looking at Ohio State's schedule for twenty
- 2:35Speaker 4: twenty six, you can make a very strong argument. Week one,
- 2:40Speaker 4: they play ball State. If Ohio State lost to Ball State,
- 2:43Speaker 4: I don't think Ryan Day's the coach for Week two
- 2:45Speaker 4: against Texas.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Put it on the ball.
- 2:47Speaker 2: If Ohio State loses to Ball State, is Ryan Day
- 2:51Speaker 2: coaching next week in Texas.
- 2:52Speaker 6: He's not getting on that plane to Austin, even if
- 2:57Speaker 6: he beats ball Even if he loses to ball and
- 3:00Speaker 6: he keeps his job, and then you lose to Texas
- 3:02Speaker 6: and you're like, oh man, then he plays Kent State.
- 3:05Speaker 6: You have him surviving losses in three weeks to Ball State.
- 3:08Speaker 5: And Kent State.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Couple of states, a couple of states. I was trying
- 3:15Speaker 2: to say, how many losses could he have and still
- 3:18Speaker 2: keep his job. Let's try it that way. What if
- 3:22Speaker 2: Ryan day. How many games do they play this year?
- 3:24Speaker 1: Twelve?
- 3:25Speaker 2: What if he went six and six, but he beats
- 3:28Speaker 2: Ball State and Kent State.
- 3:29Speaker 3: I mean, does he lose to Michigan, he beats Michigan.
- 3:34Speaker 2: What if he goes one and eleven and beats Michigan,
- 3:38Speaker 2: He's got because because.
- 3:39Speaker 5: He doesn't get the chance to play Michigan if he
- 3:42Speaker 5: if he's zero to ten, he doesn't get the chance
- 3:44Speaker 5: to play Michigan.
- 3:45Speaker 2: So let's assume listen, in a season in which he
- 3:48Speaker 2: doesn't beat Michigan. To keep his job, he merely has
- 3:51Speaker 2: to win a national championship.
- 3:53Speaker 3: That's what he did.
- 3:54Speaker 4: That's what the standard is.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yes, that's what he had to do. So let's take
- 4:01Speaker 2: that out of the equation. Okay, he beats Michigan but
- 4:05Speaker 2: only has four wins.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Does he keep his job?
- 4:08Speaker 1: Five wins?
- 4:09Speaker 3: Does he keep his job?
- 4:11Speaker 4: If you're a sub five hundred team at Ohio State,
- 4:14Speaker 4: I think Ohio State looks at you and says, thank
- 4:16Speaker 4: you for what you've done in the past for us,
- 4:18Speaker 4: We're gonna get a new coach. This is Ohio State.
- 4:20Speaker 4: The standard still has to be the standard. There is
- 4:23Speaker 4: no business bigger than college football in terms of what
- 4:27Speaker 4: have you done for me lately?
- 4:28Speaker 2: I guess what if he beats I'm trying to I'm
- 4:31Speaker 2: trying to improve my take. What if he beats the states,
- 4:35Speaker 2: a couple of states, gutting it up, Ball State and
- 4:37Speaker 2: Kent State. He beats Michigan, he beats Texas, they lose
- 4:42Speaker 2: the remainder.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Of their games, losing the Illinois. Yeah, but haven't been Texas, Michigan.
- 4:51Speaker 5: Northwestern at home to his son. Yeah, I'm gonna go
- 4:58Speaker 5: ahead and say no. I think I think eight wins
- 5:01Speaker 5: with with a win against Michigan and maybe he keeps
- 5:05Speaker 5: his job.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Do you do you look at Ryan Day? Funny if
- 5:10Speaker 4: his son commits to Northwestern, like Ryan Day couldn't win
- 5:13Speaker 4: that recruitment.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Well, I think Ryan Da didn't want his son to
- 5:16Speaker 2: play quarterback at Ohio State.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I mean right, yeah.
- 5:19Speaker 4: But it's not like it's not like the days are
- 5:21Speaker 4: pressed for money and they need this scholarship.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yeah, but maybe it's the kid not wanting to be
- 5:26Speaker 2: at the school where his dad is the coach because
- 5:29Speaker 2: he wants freedom, because he wants to be away from
- 5:31Speaker 2: his parents, because he wants to prove it on his own,
- 5:33Speaker 2: Or it's the dad just you know, I don't know
- 5:36Speaker 2: how he has that conversation, but Northwestern is not Ohio State. Hey, kid,
- 5:40Speaker 2: you're not good enough to play here. I'm gonna send
- 5:42Speaker 2: you there. It's a great school.
- 5:44Speaker 3: I like that way. I like Ryan Day just being like,
- 5:46Speaker 3: you're you're, you're good.
- 5:47Speaker 5: Yeah, Northwestern would be so lucky to have you.
- 5:50Speaker 2: And meanwhile, the kids waiting for dad to say Ohio State, yes.
- 5:54Speaker 6: Yeah, big ten all the way for you, buddy.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:00Speaker 2: What if Okay, Ryan Day beats Michigan, beats Ball State,
- 6:06Speaker 2: beats Kent State, beats Texas, do they play Indiana? Ye,
- 6:12Speaker 2: at Indiana, they beat Indiana. At Indiana, they don't win
- 6:16Speaker 2: another game. That's five wins, three of them over Texas, Michigan,
- 6:20Speaker 2: and Indiana.
- 6:21Speaker 3: He keeps a job, right, No?
- 6:27Speaker 7: What?
- 6:27Speaker 8: No?
- 6:28Speaker 3: He beats Signetty.
- 6:31Speaker 4: No, I think he keeps his job. But he enters
- 6:35Speaker 4: next season at the top of the hot seat list.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Really like his seat is yeah, yeah, yeah, like spring game.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's a James Franklin situation where Penn State's like,
- 6:48Speaker 4: just give us any reason to fire you right now.
- 6:51Speaker 3: My apologies to a who was it on Reddit?
- 6:53Speaker 1: Piece?
- 6:54Speaker 4: My piece.
- 6:56Speaker 3: It is it's the worst take I've ever given.
- 6:59Speaker 2: In fact, I think it's it's the worst take of
- 7:00Speaker 2: the history of sports radio by anyone.
- 7:05Speaker 3: It's pretty bad. I mean the.
- 7:07Speaker 5: Patrick Mahomes take out there about Alex Smith that I
- 7:10Speaker 5: think is pretty bad.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Yeah, And who I have going to the Super Bowl
- 7:13Speaker 2: that year we did the show from Kansas City.
- 7:15Speaker 3: I think it was the Jetsairs. There's been worse.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yes, Mike Norvell, head coach at Florida State, could it
- 7:23Speaker 2: enjoined US next?
- 7:36Speaker 3: Florida State head.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Coach Mike Norvell joins US now entering his seventh season
- 7:40Speaker 2: in Tallahassee, looking to get the Seminoles back to competing
- 7:43Speaker 2: for championships. Coach, what are we doing to get the
- 7:45Speaker 2: Seminoles back to competing for championships?
- 7:48Speaker 7: Well, it's been all about the work and this group
- 7:51Speaker 7: has done a great job since January. You're really excited
- 7:54Speaker 7: about this team. You know, last year at you know
- 7:57Speaker 7: a young group that you guys that have been as
- 8:00Speaker 7: they've come back into this offseason, you really approach things
- 8:02Speaker 7: the right way.
- 8:03Speaker 8: You added some great newcomers.
- 8:04Speaker 7: Just seeing the maturation of of the guys that have
- 8:08Speaker 7: been here, but also just the uh uh you know,
- 8:11Speaker 7: the the investment that has been made from some some
- 8:13Speaker 7: great playmakers and guys that I think you're going to
- 8:15Speaker 7: help us. You take another step to where we want
- 8:18Speaker 7: to get back to. And you know, it's been a
- 8:20Speaker 7: it's been an exciting journey up to this point. We're
- 8:22Speaker 7: just ready to kick this thing off.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Coach.
- 8:24Speaker 4: One of those newcomers, former Auburn Stanford transfer quarterback ash
- 8:27Speaker 4: And Daniels. You named him the starting quarterback after spring practice.
- 8:32Speaker 4: What does Daniels bring to your offense?
- 8:35Speaker 7: I mean, you know, I think he's got a great talent,
- 8:37Speaker 7: you know, great ability, you know, really smart quarterback, you.
- 8:39Speaker 8: Understand the game. Uh you know, has you know, quite
- 8:42Speaker 8: a bit of an.
- 8:42Speaker 7: Experience, and he's he's seen the highs and the lows
- 8:45Speaker 7: of college football as well and been in multiple systems,
- 8:48Speaker 7: you know, different teams.
- 8:49Speaker 8: But you really like just his his.
- 8:51Speaker 7: Presence and you know, I think he's a great playmaker.
- 8:54Speaker 7: It's been fun watching him as he's come in throughout
- 8:56Speaker 7: the spring. You know, he came in and he had
- 8:58Speaker 7: earned the job. He had to go win the job
- 9:00Speaker 7: and that was something that he was able to achieve
- 9:02Speaker 7: there in spring ball. And I think he's done nothing,
- 9:04Speaker 7: but you continue to get better. It's had a really
- 9:07Speaker 7: good fall camp. You know, has great control of the offense.
- 9:10Speaker 7: You know, really makes the guys out there on the
- 9:12Speaker 7: field better. Just in all the things that he can do.
- 9:14Speaker 7: You can push the ball down downfield vertically, he has
- 9:17Speaker 7: got great arm strength, has wonderful mobility. You know, you
- 9:20Speaker 7: can do a lot of different things extending plays. But
- 9:22Speaker 7: also if he needs to tuck it and go run
- 9:25Speaker 7: for it, he's got that in his arsenal as well.
- 9:28Speaker 7: So just I think he's a really well rounded quarterback
- 9:31Speaker 7: that can do it all.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Coach the media because we're filling time right now, and
- 9:36Speaker 2: that's our job to fill time, So we do stupid
- 9:38Speaker 2: things and talk about dumb things like who's on the
- 9:41Speaker 2: hot seat and who has the most pressure. Headed into
- 9:43Speaker 2: the season, you have had job security basically your entire career,
- 9:47Speaker 2: and this is the first season I can recall where
- 9:49Speaker 2: you're going in with some of that, with some of
- 9:52Speaker 2: he's on the hot seat. How do you deal with that?
- 9:54Speaker 2: Do you read about it? How do you protect your
- 9:56Speaker 2: family from it? How do you manage all that?
- 9:59Speaker 7: I mean, you know, truly, you just you focus on
- 10:02Speaker 7: everything that you can control, and that's investing in this team,
- 10:05Speaker 7: investing into our process of preparation, and you know, go
- 10:08Speaker 7: into going to go out and just be.
- 10:10Speaker 8: All that we can. And I've got a lot of
- 10:12Speaker 8: confidence in this team.
- 10:13Speaker 7: Uh. You know, you have experienced the highs, highs and
- 10:16Speaker 7: experienced some some really low moments just throughout this game,
- 10:19Speaker 7: throughout a career, and you know, ultimately it's still about
- 10:22Speaker 7: the work that you're willing to put in, what you're
- 10:24Speaker 7: willing to invest, and then you got to go out
- 10:26Speaker 7: there and you've got to go get the job done.
- 10:28Speaker 7: And you know, I've got a lot of belief in
- 10:29Speaker 7: this football team. You know, you're definitely grateful the staff
- 10:32Speaker 7: that I that I get to work with each and every.
- 10:33Speaker 8: Day, and you know, absolutely believe that that.
- 10:36Speaker 7: We're going to go and you know we're going to
- 10:38Speaker 7: put our stamp and write our story in this year.
- 10:40Speaker 8: That's that's here to come.
- 10:42Speaker 2: But does your wife ever come up to you and say, hey,
- 10:44Speaker 2: there's moron, why is he saying that you're on the
- 10:46Speaker 2: hot seat? Like does that ever happen?
- 10:47Speaker 3: Any of that?
- 10:49Speaker 7: I can tell you that there's there's not a whole
- 10:50Speaker 7: lot in the good in the good days and in
- 10:52Speaker 7: the times of challenge, there's not.
- 10:53Speaker 8: A whole lot of reading, reading and listening.
- 10:56Speaker 7: To a whole lot of the outside uh uh media
- 10:59Speaker 7: media part of it, because you know, whether it's good,
- 11:01Speaker 7: you know, in the good times, it can it can
- 11:02Speaker 7: definitely be a detriment. And obviously when it's you're probably
- 11:06Speaker 7: not the best of messages. You know, it's probably not
- 11:08Speaker 7: gonna got to help either, right.
- 11:09Speaker 4: Coach, One of my favorite players on your team, Deuce Robinson.
- 11:12Speaker 4: He was first team All acc receiver last season. He
- 11:15Speaker 4: enters this season preseason second team All American, massive piece
- 11:18Speaker 4: to get back for the offense. How challenging is college
- 11:21Speaker 4: football now when you not only have to recruit players
- 11:24Speaker 4: to your program, but you essentially have to re recruit
- 11:27Speaker 4: your best players every off season to keep them with you.
- 11:30Speaker 7: Well, you know, I mean, I think you reduce I mean,
- 11:33Speaker 7: it's uh, it was impressive watching him go through the
- 11:36Speaker 7: his process of you know, just just making decision whether
- 11:39Speaker 7: or not to go to the National Football League. You know,
- 11:42Speaker 7: obviously we went through the journey, got got the feedback
- 11:45Speaker 7: that of areas that you know, one of the things
- 11:47Speaker 7: of how they view him, and you know, he's obviously
- 11:49Speaker 7: held in a very high quart in those in that regard,
- 11:53Speaker 7: but also some of the areas where he can improve.
- 11:54Speaker 7: You know, the impact that he could make, you know,
- 11:56Speaker 7: the belief that he has in you in his continued
- 11:59Speaker 7: development here.
- 12:00Speaker 8: And you know that was a big statement for us and.
- 12:02Speaker 7: You he's coming off a great season and you know
- 12:04Speaker 7: what you obviously a lot of accolades, but you know,
- 12:06Speaker 7: to be able to put his stamp on this team.
- 12:08Speaker 7: And I've told people you you know, for all the
- 12:10Speaker 7: things that he is as a as a player, which
- 12:12Speaker 7: I think is one of the best receivers in college football,
- 12:15Speaker 7: but you know what he means in our locker room,
- 12:17Speaker 7: what he means you to this community, to this program. Uh,
- 12:19Speaker 7: this football team has a lot of deuces DNA in it.
- 12:22Speaker 7: And you know, it's just you know, when you're one
- 12:24Speaker 7: of your best players is the hardest worker, you know,
- 12:27Speaker 7: a guy that's that's pouring into others wants to see Uh,
- 12:30Speaker 7: you know, you know others succeed you throughout the journey.
- 12:32Speaker 8: Uh, it really is, you know, just a true joy
- 12:35Speaker 8: to have him back.
- 12:36Speaker 7: And you know, as you know, I was talking to
- 12:38Speaker 7: him here this this past week, just watching his growth
- 12:40Speaker 7: as a player, you know, as a route runner, and
- 12:42Speaker 7: the things that he's been able to do, the versatility
- 12:44Speaker 7: that he's been able to bring to his game. Uh,
- 12:46Speaker 7: you know, I just can't wait to watch him play
- 12:47Speaker 7: this season.
- 12:49Speaker 8: Coach.
- 12:49Speaker 5: Another thing we do this offseason in the media as
- 12:51Speaker 5: we come up with poles and we figure out who
- 12:54Speaker 5: ranks where. How much stock do you put into these
- 12:57Speaker 5: off season polls, these preseason polls.
- 13:00Speaker 8: I really don't put put much into it. I mean,
- 13:02Speaker 8: you know, obviously, you know you want to you.
- 13:04Speaker 7: Want to put your your yourself, your program, your your
- 13:07Speaker 7: team in in position.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Uh.
- 13:09Speaker 7: You know that at the end of the at the
- 13:10Speaker 7: end of the year, you are where you need to be.
- 13:12Speaker 7: And so that's going to be our focus is wherever,
- 13:14Speaker 7: wherever we start, that's mine, right But you know, ultimately
- 13:17Speaker 7: we are going to be in control of where we end,
- 13:19Speaker 7: and that's that's our focus and our work.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Coach.
- 13:22Speaker 4: I love the conference. I walked on at the University
- 13:24Speaker 4: of North Carolina, So I'm a big A C C guy.
- 13:28Speaker 4: But do you feel like the A C C has
- 13:30Speaker 4: a perception problem nationally? Because I'm looking at your schedule
- 13:34Speaker 4: and there aren't a lot of easy saturdays out there.
- 13:37Speaker 7: I mean it's a I think that it's a great
- 13:40Speaker 7: league and you look at the when you look at
- 13:43Speaker 7: the results of what's been done, and you know, just
- 13:45Speaker 7: in our out of league play, you know, the the
- 13:48Speaker 7: the the talented teams, the versatility within within our our
- 13:52Speaker 7: own league of the styles of play, and I mean
- 13:55Speaker 7: it's a you got to bring it every week. And
- 13:56Speaker 7: I know people like to say that, but when you
- 13:58Speaker 7: look at at our conference top to mind, I mean
- 14:00Speaker 7: it is definitely a challenging trek to go through. But
- 14:04Speaker 7: also you know, we got a lot of great teams
- 14:06Speaker 7: that that can compete for a championship as well as
- 14:09Speaker 7: you know, teams that are are doing really well, you
- 14:12Speaker 7: know against you other conferences that might you'll be perceived
- 14:14Speaker 7: in a certain way.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Coach, I'm fascinated by what it is you do for
- 14:18Speaker 2: a living, how much time it consumes. I am wondering
- 14:21Speaker 2: what is the for you? What is your favorite thing
- 14:24Speaker 2: about coaching?
- 14:26Speaker 7: I mean I love seeing seeing guys, whether it's coaches, players,
- 14:29Speaker 7: you know, everybody or that I get to be around.
- 14:31Speaker 8: I love seeing your growth. I love seeing improvement.
- 14:34Speaker 7: I love seeing and understanding and confidence of what what
- 14:38Speaker 7: guys can achieve and what they can do. Uh.
- 14:40Speaker 8: You know, you're you're going to face ups and downs.
- 14:42Speaker 8: That's part of life.
- 14:43Speaker 7: And you know, but when you when you are willing
- 14:46Speaker 7: to make the investment for what you want to be,
- 14:48Speaker 7: for where you want to go, for those that uh,
- 14:51Speaker 7: that that you want to be able to do it with,
- 14:52Speaker 7: and then you see that that ascension, Uh, when you
- 14:55Speaker 7: see the response to to the difficulty you know, situations. Uh,
- 14:59Speaker 7: that's that means everything to me. And I'm blessed to
- 15:02Speaker 7: be able to do what I get to do. You've
- 15:03Speaker 7: been around a lot of great players, you have been
- 15:05Speaker 7: a part of a lot of great teams. Uh. And
- 15:08Speaker 7: then you know, obviously we've had to had to work
- 15:09Speaker 7: through some challenging times. But just seeing that continued growth
- 15:13Speaker 7: for individuals to go accomplish the dreams that they set
- 15:15Speaker 7: out playing just the best game in the world.
- 15:18Speaker 2: That's awesome. What's the worst thing about it? That's like
- 15:20Speaker 2: that was a great answer on the best thing. There's
- 15:22Speaker 2: so much we don't see coach, Like, what's something you
- 15:25Speaker 2: could do without as it relates to coaching.
- 15:27Speaker 7: Well, I mean, you know, I think as they do without.
- 15:30Speaker 7: I mean, it's it's all part it's you know, it
- 15:32Speaker 7: hurts when you see, you know, the guys have to
- 15:35Speaker 7: go through difficult situations and you know, whether it's an injury,
- 15:38Speaker 7: whether it's you know, you know, a setback that you know,
- 15:41Speaker 7: maybe the results aren't exactly what they want, but to
- 15:44Speaker 7: kind of help guide them, you know, you you pour
- 15:46Speaker 7: so much into these players, and it's.
- 15:48Speaker 8: Not just you know, what they're doing on the field,
- 15:50Speaker 8: you know.
- 15:50Speaker 7: That's the product that everybody on ouse I gets to see,
- 15:52Speaker 7: but you get to see, you know, the life that
- 15:55Speaker 7: they're living and you know, whether it's a you know,
- 15:58Speaker 7: maybe an issue with the family or maybe it's it's
- 16:00Speaker 7: a challenge that they have personally, but to it hurts
- 16:03Speaker 7: when you see a family member that has to go
- 16:05Speaker 7: through difficult times. But you know, on the flip side,
- 16:08Speaker 7: it does provide that opportunity for the growth we're just
- 16:11Speaker 7: talking about.
- 16:12Speaker 8: But you know, I mean, you.
- 16:13Speaker 7: Spend so much time with these kids, you spend so
- 16:15Speaker 7: much time with the staff, and I mean, you just
- 16:17Speaker 7: want to you want to see these you want to
- 16:19Speaker 7: see everybody that you get to do it with, you'll
- 16:21Speaker 7: have success and you know, those challenging times that may
- 16:23Speaker 7: can be it can be tough, coach.
- 16:25Speaker 4: I don't know if you saw this, but Akron is
- 16:27Speaker 4: doing a giveaway to a season ticket holder where a
- 16:30Speaker 4: season ticket holder will get to call the first series
- 16:33Speaker 4: against UH in their Week one game. Is there an
- 16:36Speaker 4: nil number now for you to do that with a
- 16:39Speaker 4: Florida State booster?
- 16:40Speaker 3: No way, He's shaking his head. No before you even
- 16:42Speaker 3: finish your question.
- 16:46Speaker 8: No, I mean, I'm all the power to Achron.
- 16:48Speaker 7: But you know, it's just you know, when you see
- 16:53Speaker 7: the work that these kids and his staff and everybody
- 16:56Speaker 7: that you know goes, UH pours into you know, every play.
- 17:00Speaker 7: You know, it's it's whether you know you never know
- 17:02Speaker 7: when your when your last play is going to be,
- 17:04Speaker 7: and you know you try to take advantage of.
- 17:06Speaker 8: Each one of them. And no, I would there's no
- 17:09Speaker 8: number out there?
- 17:12Speaker 3: Are you sure, coach?
- 17:13Speaker 5: Because my niece attends Florida State and I'm looking for
- 17:15Speaker 5: something for Christmas for you, how you would charge you?
- 17:20Speaker 7: I mean, better be a lot of zero, There better
- 17:24Speaker 7: be a lot of zeros.
- 17:25Speaker 8: Let me tell you that.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Hey, coach, maybe it's just a situation where it's like
- 17:28Speaker 4: you just choose runner pass. Maybe money could go towards coach.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Coach you get the money though a lot.
- 17:37Speaker 8: Of zeros, a lot of zeros in out any idea.
- 17:40Speaker 2: What if I say, you can you know, you can
- 17:42Speaker 2: call it audible, you can reject whatever play the guy tries.
- 17:45Speaker 3: To put in, and then you just take the money, right,
- 17:47Speaker 3: I mean.
- 17:49Speaker 8: Yeah, you would give back a couple of alerts.
- 17:51Speaker 3: On that place. Yes, coach.
- 17:54Speaker 2: I love today's college football because it feels like, and
- 17:57Speaker 2: we just saw it last year, that anyone could put
- 18:00Speaker 2: together a great program and make a run at a
- 18:03Speaker 2: national championship.
- 18:04Speaker 3: I'm wondering if I.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Told you ten years ago, Indiana, one day, ten years
- 18:08Speaker 2: down the road would be on top of the college
- 18:11Speaker 2: football world, you would have told me what.
- 18:14Speaker 7: Well, I mean, it's a it is definitely a different
- 18:17Speaker 7: time in college football when you look to year to
- 18:20Speaker 7: year and just the you know, the way that teams,
- 18:23Speaker 7: the way that rosters have have changed, you know, the
- 18:26Speaker 7: player acquisition aspect of it.
- 18:28Speaker 8: I mean, it's it's so very unique.
- 18:29Speaker 7: But you know, with that, you know, it does provide
- 18:32Speaker 7: great opportunity and to see, you know, teams that have
- 18:35Speaker 7: really emerged, you know in in individual seasons. You know,
- 18:38Speaker 7: you know teams that you know, you have these big
- 18:41Speaker 7: swings up and down. You we've experienced, you know, we've
- 18:43Speaker 7: experienced that, you know, the last couple of years in
- 18:46Speaker 7: a negative light. But you know, ultimately it's it's the
- 18:49Speaker 7: opportunity's ahead for this season and you know, for for
- 18:52Speaker 7: this team. And you know, one of the things I've
- 18:54Speaker 7: really liked about this offseason is just having the one
- 18:56Speaker 7: transfer port, so we've had since January to be able
- 18:59Speaker 7: to have or team together, you know, for you know,
- 19:02Speaker 7: twelve months, thirteen months. You know, to see guys that
- 19:05Speaker 7: whether they've been here for three years, four years, or
- 19:07Speaker 7: whether they got here in January, then to be able
- 19:09Speaker 7: to come together, it's really been a refreshing to see
- 19:12Speaker 7: that that stability and you just see guys coming together.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Coach.
- 19:16Speaker 4: When I was at North Carolina, one of the things
- 19:18Speaker 4: I appreciated most was just seeing the grind that the
- 19:20Speaker 4: coaches put in to reach some of these high profile jobs.
- 19:24Speaker 4: What's the furthest away you ever felt from where you
- 19:27Speaker 4: are now at Florida State in such a high profile job.
- 19:30Speaker 7: The question, Yeah, I mean I've been I've been fortunate
- 19:34Speaker 7: on my journey. I started off I was a GA
- 19:36Speaker 7: at Central Arkansas. You know, just was didn't know anybody
- 19:40Speaker 7: in the in the coaching profession, didn't know what really
- 19:42Speaker 7: any Division one coach. But I got an opportunity. I
- 19:46Speaker 7: got a phone call, get to go and interview for
- 19:47Speaker 7: a job. You know, people, you know, I was totally
- 19:52Speaker 7: I don't know if I've ever dreamed as big as
- 19:54Speaker 7: an opportunity that I've been able to work my way
- 19:57Speaker 7: and to send through became the youngest head coach in
- 20:00Speaker 7: Division one football.
- 20:01Speaker 8: You know I was.
- 20:02Speaker 7: I was able to, you know, work the process of
- 20:04Speaker 7: you know, just trying to trying to be the best
- 20:06Speaker 7: that I could be.
- 20:06Speaker 8: And that's the advice.
- 20:07Speaker 7: You know, I'll get asked if I can give advice
- 20:09Speaker 7: to to coaches and people because you're always looking over
- 20:12Speaker 7: what is the next move? What do I need to
- 20:13Speaker 7: do to put myself in that position? Just need to
- 20:15Speaker 7: go to beat the best you can in your job,
- 20:17Speaker 7: and you never know who's watching. You never know what
- 20:20Speaker 7: door or opportunity might present itself. But you've got to
- 20:22Speaker 7: be prepared when that when it when it happens. And
- 20:25Speaker 7: you know, a lot of people walk walk right past
- 20:27Speaker 7: the big break that they might want or desire in
- 20:29Speaker 7: their life because they're just not willing to put everything
- 20:31Speaker 7: that they have into into the position that they're that
- 20:34Speaker 7: they're in because they're always looking at the next one.
- 20:36Speaker 7: But you know, for for for this, for this opportunity
- 20:39Speaker 7: to be here, I mean, this is a special place.
- 20:42Speaker 7: Uh you know, the the great responsibility that comes with
- 20:44Speaker 7: this job. But you know, I'm grateful for the journey
- 20:46Speaker 7: that I've had, uh to be able to get here.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Bobby Baden was a was a friend of mine. He
- 20:52Speaker 2: came on the show very often, a great man. As
- 20:54Speaker 2: you know, do you find yourself pitching yourself every single
- 20:57Speaker 2: day that you're you're now holding a position that was
- 20:59Speaker 2: once how by Bobby Baden?
- 21:01Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, I mean said on my on my desk,
- 21:03Speaker 7: you know, I've got a you know, a letter that
- 21:06Speaker 7: you know, I was fortunate in my first year I
- 21:09Speaker 7: got a chance to meet you know, Coach Bowden and
- 21:11Speaker 7: we came in office, we sat, we talked, you know,
- 21:13Speaker 7: being able to just share that experience and we you know,
- 21:17Speaker 7: we both exchanged letters afterwards. And just something I have
- 21:20Speaker 7: framed sitting on my desk, just uh, just a gratitude
- 21:23Speaker 7: and as I know that I know the responsibility all
- 21:26Speaker 7: the things that has been poured into this program. Uh,
- 21:29Speaker 7: and it's it's something I don't don't take lightly into
- 21:32Speaker 7: something that you know, obviously for our players, for everybody
- 21:35Speaker 7: a part of this program. It's about, you know, getting
- 21:37Speaker 7: this program back to where we all all desire it
- 21:39Speaker 7: to be and excited for this journey ahead.
- 21:42Speaker 4: Coach. We had Mike Elco from Texas A and m
- 21:44Speaker 4: on recently Ryan Day, and it was funny to hear
- 21:47Speaker 4: them talk about going through the college experience with their
- 21:50Speaker 4: kids at Northwestern. Would you ever let your child go
- 21:55Speaker 4: to either Miami or Florida? Or is that that's a
- 21:59Speaker 4: that's a no on.
- 22:03Speaker 3: He's shaking his head. No, he won't even respond.
- 22:08Speaker 7: There's a there's you know, my daughter, Meila is she's
- 22:12Speaker 7: twelve years old, and she knows there's a couple of
- 22:14Speaker 7: colors that just don't go together.
- 22:16Speaker 8: And so you'll wait, she's she's she's come up the
- 22:19Speaker 8: right way. There's you're not gonna see.
- 22:21Speaker 7: You're not gonna see bluer orange or greener greener orange
- 22:23Speaker 7: ever together in.
- 22:25Speaker 8: My house or in anything that she's doing.
- 22:28Speaker 3: You raised her, well, Uh, it's amazing. I gotta tell you, coach,
- 22:32Speaker 3: I love you so much.
- 22:33Speaker 2: I really do. And I love this interview so much.
- 22:35Speaker 2: I don't care about the ACC. I don't care about Miami,
- 22:38Speaker 2: even though I'm down here and live down here for
- 22:40Speaker 2: twenty five years. I'm rooting for the Knowles to win
- 22:42Speaker 2: the conference this year and make it to the playoffs.
- 22:44Speaker 3: How about that? Just because of you, coach? You sold me?
- 22:46Speaker 3: How about that?
- 22:48Speaker 7: Oh man, we're excited about this team, and you know,
- 22:50Speaker 7: I definitely grateful for the work that our players have
- 22:54Speaker 7: put in. And you'll be able to kick off in
- 22:55Speaker 7: a week zero. I mean that the time is now.
- 22:58Speaker 7: We're gonna have a fun, exciting football team and you're ready.
- 23:01Speaker 8: To go to work.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Yeah, you were sweating before you came on with us.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Is that just a South Florida heat? Is that Florida heat?
- 23:08Speaker 2: Or where you work it out? Because you look great,
- 23:09Speaker 2: I gotta tell you, yeah.
- 23:10Speaker 7: No, we're just we've been getting after we've had practice
- 23:14Speaker 7: practice sixteen this morning, so we've been we've been rolling,
- 23:18Speaker 7: rolling at it and about to go get to a
- 23:19Speaker 7: walk for here.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Just a little bit, right, But this heat's insane though,
- 23:21Speaker 2: huh it's one hundred and fifteen degrees out. I mean,
- 23:23Speaker 2: take it easy on the kids. All Right, listen, I'm
- 23:25Speaker 2: rooting for I'm a fan. I could say this now. Okay,
- 23:28Speaker 2: take it easy on the kids, I mean.
- 23:29Speaker 8: Better, get your mind right. Those those three thirty games
- 23:33Speaker 8: are gonna be weeks.
- 23:35Speaker 2: All right, coach, We appreciate the time. Good luck to you,
- 23:38Speaker 2: good luck to the team.
- 23:39Speaker 1: This year. We're rooting for you.
- 23:40Speaker 3: I swear to you.
- 23:41Speaker 8: We are, yes, appreciate you guys having me on at Goles.
- 23:44Speaker 3: All Right, yes, Goles, let's go.
