- 0:02Speaker 1: The King of the Ring returned and was crowned once again,
- 0:06Speaker 1: and going into round eleven of the twenty twenty five
- 0:09Speaker 1: MotoGP World Championship, it wasn't a case of I wonder
- 0:12Speaker 1: if Mark's gonna win. It was more I wonder if
- 0:15Speaker 1: Mark's gonna win by X amount of seconds? And that's
- 0:18Speaker 1: exactly what we saw this weekend. Pitt Talk is brought
- 0:22Speaker 1: to you by the team at Shannon's Insurance. I'm your host,
- 0:25Speaker 1: Rinita Vanmullen. Joining me is the Mark Marquees of motor
- 0:28Speaker 1: GP Stats, mister Matt Clayton. Matt, We've been catching up
- 0:32Speaker 1: off air on everything that's happened over the weekend, but
- 0:36Speaker 1: Saxon Ring it delivered. It showed us the good, the bad.
- 0:40Speaker 2: And the ugly.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Yeah, certainly the last part with so few riders finishing
- 0:45Speaker 3: the race will definitely get into that. But you know,
- 0:47Speaker 3: it was weird, Like I wrote this in the lead
- 0:49Speaker 3: up to the Saxon Ring, like the fact that Marquez
- 0:51Speaker 3: is leading the championship on the best bike in the series.
- 0:53Speaker 3: That's probably not a surprise, But the weirdest bit before
- 0:56Speaker 3: Saxon Ring was that he kept winning at these tracks
- 0:58Speaker 3: where he hadn't won for so long, Like you're thinking
- 1:00Speaker 3: Katar and Magello and Ascent and the tracks where he's
- 1:03Speaker 3: normally really good, like Kota and like Harrath, he actually
- 1:06Speaker 3: hadn't won though the few races this year he hadn't won,
- 1:09Speaker 3: so it kind of felt this was something had to
- 1:11Speaker 3: give weekend, like are we going to get normal service
- 1:14Speaker 3: resumed with Mark winning at the Saxon Ring because he's
- 1:16Speaker 3: done that forever, or is this going to be one
- 1:18Speaker 3: of those weird blips in this season. But it's good that,
- 1:21Speaker 3: you know, if you want some predictability in your life,
- 1:24Speaker 3: then Mark Marquez and the Saxon Ring is about the
- 1:25Speaker 3: closest things you can get to a sure thing. But
- 1:28Speaker 3: either about you, there's something super cool about watching a
- 1:32Speaker 3: driver or a rider or anyone in a particular sport
- 1:34Speaker 3: when they're in their absolute sweet spot and you know
- 1:38Speaker 3: that it's them against themselves somewhere where they're super dominant.
- 1:41Speaker 3: He was absolutely awesome on the weekend, and I'm sure
- 1:45Speaker 3: we'll get into it, but the sprint race for me,
- 1:47Speaker 3: the fact that he actually had to fight for it,
- 1:49Speaker 3: that was the most fun part of the weekend for me.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Well, that was what I was just thinking then, as
- 1:53Speaker 1: you know, you're saying, you know the sweet spot and
- 1:55Speaker 1: what you see, But then I'm going yeah. But in
- 1:57Speaker 1: the sprint, he ran wide at term one, got a
- 1:59Speaker 1: hairpis art round white, and then he had to fight
- 2:02Speaker 1: for it, and it's like, okay, cool, here we go.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Now we've got a race on our hands. It's not
- 2:08Speaker 1: Mark Marquez riding off into the sunset.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Well.
- 2:10Speaker 3: And the best part about it, too, was because you
- 2:12Speaker 3: could see there was almost like these two competing voices
- 2:16Speaker 3: on each shoulder. It's like, chill out, you've got the
- 2:18Speaker 3: championship lead. It's fine, like whatever you can get in
- 2:21Speaker 3: this race. The points in the sprint are so marginal
- 2:24Speaker 3: between first and second and third and whatever anyway, so
- 2:27Speaker 3: there was the sensible all right, I'll just roll home
- 2:29Speaker 3: and I'll probably finish on the podium and it's fine,
- 2:31Speaker 3: and I'll protect my championship lead. But then there's the
- 2:33Speaker 3: instinctive racer in Mark where he hates to be beaten
- 2:37Speaker 3: at anytime, and he certainly doesn't like being beaten at
- 2:40Speaker 3: circuits where he's the man. And you could see that
- 2:42Speaker 3: there was this like sort of inner dialogue going on.
- 2:44Speaker 3: It's like do I push? Do I push? And there
- 2:47Speaker 3: was one lap about I think it was about four
- 2:48Speaker 3: laps from the end where I think he took six
- 2:51Speaker 3: tenths out of a second out of Betzachi once he
- 2:53Speaker 3: got up to pee two, and I reckon that was
- 2:54Speaker 3: the moment he would have looked at the pit board
- 2:56Speaker 3: and gone, Okay, that's it. I'm going for this. I'm
- 2:58Speaker 3: just going for this because I can't help myself. And
- 3:00Speaker 3: with the lead that he's got in the championship, he
- 3:02Speaker 3: did not need three extra points. He needed three extra
- 3:05Speaker 3: points like a hole in the head. But he's just like, no,
- 3:07Speaker 3: I'm going to go for this, went for it, wanted
- 3:11Speaker 3: on the last lap, and then almost apologized for not
- 3:13Speaker 3: being able to turn his instincts off. I thought it
- 3:15Speaker 3: was just really funny, like it shows you how hardwired
- 3:17Speaker 3: he is to win even when he doesn't have to.
- 3:20Speaker 3: I thought that was pretty interesting for a moment there.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Though.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I'm watching bet Zechi and like you said, you're seeing
- 3:26Speaker 1: mark this gap maintaining.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I'm thinking, oh, got this.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Yeah, we might have a prillier step and what that
- 3:34Speaker 1: could do once again for Betzechi and the whole Joe
- 3:36Speaker 1: Martin drama which we'll get into.
- 3:38Speaker 2: It a little bit. But then yeah, like you said, all.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Of a sudden, it's like like that switch and Mark goes, no,
- 3:43Speaker 1: you know what, I'm just going to go and do this.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Why not?
- 3:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and then almost apologizing for it afterwards. It's like, yeah,
- 3:49Speaker 3: I know, I said, I should be thinking about the championship,
- 3:51Speaker 3: but my instincts took over and I'm sorry, but here's
- 3:53Speaker 3: another win. But you do wonder too, like the psychology
- 3:56Speaker 3: of him in that circuit. Had it it been anywhere else,
- 3:58Speaker 3: he might have just gone, maybe I'll just take the
- 4:00Speaker 3: second place and live for another day. But it's like, no, no,
- 4:02Speaker 3: this is my track and you're not beating me here,
- 4:05Speaker 3: so I am going to go for it. It was just
- 4:07Speaker 3: funny watching him sort of wrestle with doing the sensible
- 4:10Speaker 3: thing and doing the thing that he has made a
- 4:12Speaker 3: habit of doing it the saxid ring, and it's nice
- 4:15Speaker 3: to see that the instinct won out over being sensible.
- 4:17Speaker 3: It's be honest, I.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Think as well, you just said that like it is
- 4:21Speaker 1: his track, but it's he needed to claim it on
- 4:23Speaker 1: aored you Caddy. I think there's also that mental aspect
- 4:26Speaker 1: of well, as well, of I need to be the
- 4:29Speaker 1: king of the ring now on a ju Canti and
- 4:31Speaker 1: not just back in the day on the Repsole. Yeah.
- 4:33Speaker 3: And also you forget that it was twenty twenty one
- 4:37Speaker 3: that he last won there, so I think it was
- 4:39Speaker 3: between shoulder surgery two and three or three and four,
- 4:41Speaker 3: I can't remember which, and it was that really unlikely
- 4:43Speaker 3: win on the Honda. But you remember a couple of
- 4:45Speaker 3: years ago when he was there on the Honda and
- 4:47Speaker 3: it just about broke him. Like I think he had
- 4:49Speaker 3: six crashes over the course of the race the weekend
- 4:51Speaker 3: before he pulled out, and that was the ultimate case
- 4:55Speaker 3: of him just raging against the dying of the light.
- 4:58Speaker 3: It's like, I know this bike isn't going to be
- 5:00Speaker 3: able to allow me to win this Grand Prix, and
- 5:02Speaker 3: I'm probably going to hurt myself, but I'm not going
- 5:05Speaker 3: to keep I'm not going to stop trying. He just
- 5:07Speaker 3: kept coming off and coming off and coming off. What
- 5:09Speaker 3: amazed me that day is there was a point where
- 5:11Speaker 3: he just threw his hands up and said, look, I
- 5:12Speaker 3: cannot break myself anymore. I have to get off this thing.
- 5:16Speaker 3: That was the moment where you figured that, you know,
- 5:18Speaker 3: or he really is going to leave Rebsolond and not
- 5:20Speaker 3: knowing where he was going to go. But I think
- 5:23Speaker 3: it puts a lot of those wins from that era
- 5:24Speaker 3: at the Saxon Ring into perspective because very rarely did
- 5:27Speaker 3: he turn up there with the best bike. It was
- 5:29Speaker 3: just that he was the person that made the difference
- 5:31Speaker 3: in you know, the other hand, riders weren't really doing anything.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Now that he is on the best bike and in
- 5:36Speaker 3: this amazing form that he is in, I mean to
- 5:39Speaker 3: expect a different championship outcome when you put the best
- 5:41Speaker 3: rider on the best bike is sort of wishful thinking, really.
- 5:44Speaker 3: But we're halfway through this season. He has an eighty
- 5:47Speaker 3: three point lead, and you could argue that he's probably
- 5:49Speaker 3: thrown away about twenty five or thirty points through dumb
- 5:51Speaker 3: things like crashing at Kota and her wrath when he
- 5:54Speaker 3: came off earlier on. I mean, it's a case of
- 5:57Speaker 3: when is he going to win this championship? Not if
- 5:59Speaker 3: he's going to win this World championship, but I think
- 6:01Speaker 3: the way that he's doing it and it's made us
- 6:03Speaker 3: reassess a lot of what the other writers have been
- 6:06Speaker 3: doing for the past couple of years. Because if anyone
- 6:08Speaker 3: thought that the injuries and the surgeries in the time
- 6:11Speaker 3: between the last championship had sort of, you know, quietened
- 6:15Speaker 3: his star a little bit, I think we've got the
- 6:17Speaker 3: answer now. I know he's thirty two, he's one of
- 6:19Speaker 3: the older guys in it now, but the ferocity of
- 6:22Speaker 3: the competitive spirits still there. And when you think about
- 6:25Speaker 3: what he's gone through between then and now, I'll be
- 6:29Speaker 3: super interested to see how he processes is the World
- 6:32Speaker 3: Championship when it comes to him this year, because I
- 6:34Speaker 3: suspect he's going to be really really focused until he
- 6:37Speaker 3: gets it, and then I also suspect he's going to
- 6:39Speaker 3: be incredibly emotional once it comes out, because you will
- 6:42Speaker 3: always think back to probably your worst moments when you
- 6:45Speaker 3: get back to the top of the mountain. Again, it's
- 6:47Speaker 3: been so long since he's been there. It'll be a
- 6:49Speaker 3: really interesting insight once he lets his guard down. When
- 6:52Speaker 3: this happens, and the way it's going, I mean, it
- 6:55Speaker 3: could all be quite frankly, it could almost be decided
- 6:57Speaker 3: before they get to Australia towards the end of the
- 6:59Speaker 3: year if he keeps this, Because right now you have
- 7:01Speaker 3: to think to yourself, if he's not going to win
- 7:02Speaker 3: a race in who he is.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean potentially Alex Marquez, potentially. But even this weekend,
- 7:10Speaker 1: which we'll get into, in the main race, he was
- 7:12Speaker 1: handed second place. It was like he was there fighting
- 7:15Speaker 1: for it, right. Yeah, you had to be on your
- 7:17Speaker 1: bike to actually cross the line at the end of
- 7:19Speaker 1: the day. But yeah, Alex is second in the championship.
- 7:22Speaker 1: But he's how many points behind Mark?
- 7:24Speaker 2: Did you say?
- 7:25Speaker 3: Eighty three?
- 7:26Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 7:26Speaker 3: Eighty three. That's more than two it's more than two
- 7:28Speaker 3: perfect Grand Prix weekends, which, by the way, if we're
- 7:31Speaker 3: still counting at home here, that's four weekends in a
- 7:33Speaker 3: row where Mark scored the maximum thirty seven points. So
- 7:36Speaker 3: it's he's not leaving too many points on the table
- 7:39Speaker 3: right now. The craziest stat of all of them this
- 7:41Speaker 3: year is when you look at the sprints. He's in
- 7:44Speaker 3: eleven sprints. He's had ten wins in one second place,
- 7:46Speaker 3: so he's three points away from a perfect score in
- 7:49Speaker 3: the sprints. That's bad, isn't it.
- 7:51Speaker 1: That's wild wild The thing that this is his first
- 7:54Speaker 1: year on the factory Jucati team, right and all of
- 7:57Speaker 1: a sudden, it's breaking all these records all this is change,
- 8:00Speaker 1: but also the downside is we're seeing Peco Banyaya so
- 8:04Speaker 1: far behind and just struggling. Is like, yeah, it's exciting
- 8:07Speaker 1: to see Mark Marquez because we were always wondering what
- 8:10Speaker 1: could he do on the best bike. But then I
- 8:13Speaker 1: think I've mentioned this on the pod before, as I
- 8:15Speaker 1: remember Peco Bannaya saying previously, Oh, I want to win
- 8:18Speaker 1: a championship when Mark Marquez is on the best bike
- 8:21Speaker 1: as well and.
- 8:21Speaker 2: I'm fighting against him.
- 8:23Speaker 1: We're seeing that now and we're not seeing Peco performing
- 8:26Speaker 1: at his best.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I reckon that's one of the probably the biggest
- 8:29Speaker 3: disappointments of the year. I was super excited to see
- 8:32Speaker 3: what a fight between those two was going to look like.
- 8:35Speaker 3: And I mean, at the end of the day, hand
- 8:36Speaker 3: on heart, we all know who the better rider is
- 8:38Speaker 3: of the two. But I thought what was going to
- 8:40Speaker 3: be interesting was that Pecko's been there in that team,
- 8:42Speaker 3: and he's so embedded in that team, and that team's
- 8:44Speaker 3: been around him, and he's won. You know, the last
- 8:47Speaker 3: four years, he's won two World championships and finished a
- 8:49Speaker 3: very close second a couple of times. He's been the
- 8:51Speaker 3: guy for the last four years. And I thought, Wow,
- 8:54Speaker 3: this is going to be so interesting someone of Mark's
- 8:56Speaker 3: talent and ambition trying to do this in Peco's team.
- 9:00Speaker 3: That was the way that I saw. I thought, that's
- 9:01Speaker 3: going to make a really interesting championship fight. And we've
- 9:04Speaker 3: talked on the pod before that Peco when he's in
- 9:07Speaker 3: his sweet spot and he's confident with the machinery and
- 9:09Speaker 3: things are just in the just so for Peco, he's amazing.
- 9:14Speaker 3: He hasn't got into that groove at all this year,
- 9:17Speaker 3: and every week he must look up and there's marketing
- 9:19Speaker 3: another trophy, and the margins a bit bigger, and the
- 9:21Speaker 3: margins a bit bigger, and the margins a bit bigger. Psychologically,
- 9:25Speaker 3: this has got to be pretty deflating for Banyai, and
- 9:27Speaker 3: it's got to the point that the rest of this season,
- 9:31Speaker 3: I mean, look, he may win a race or two.
- 9:33Speaker 3: We don't know how it's going to go towards the
- 9:35Speaker 3: end of the season. But the second half of twenty
- 9:38Speaker 3: twenty five to me, is almost like the world's longest
- 9:41Speaker 3: extended preseason for twenty twenty six, because when everything is
- 9:45Speaker 3: reset to zero and he now knows what he's up
- 9:47Speaker 3: against and he knows the machinery he's got on his disposal.
- 9:51Speaker 3: There's a lot riding on next year for Peco in
- 9:53Speaker 3: terms of how we're going to see him when his
- 9:56Speaker 3: career is over, because we may very well look back
- 9:59Speaker 3: at this, and so we'll look there was this five
- 10:01Speaker 3: year period where Mark Marquez was either broken or not
- 10:03Speaker 3: on the grid at all. He emerged as the guy
- 10:07Speaker 3: during that time, but then when the guy came back,
- 10:10Speaker 3: when the guy in hooks came back, then it sort
- 10:13Speaker 3: of made us reassess a little bit about where we
- 10:15Speaker 3: see Pecko. So I think next year we'll get a
- 10:18Speaker 3: better indication because I think Pecko's very aware of now
- 10:21Speaker 3: what he's up against. You'd imagine that next year will
- 10:24Speaker 3: be pretty similar to this because we've got some stability
- 10:26Speaker 3: in the rules as everyone sort of gets ready for
- 10:28Speaker 3: twenty twenty seven. But I never in a million years
- 10:31Speaker 3: expected the gap between them to be this big. I
- 10:34Speaker 3: thought that it was a fight that Mark would win,
- 10:36Speaker 3: but not like this.
- 10:37Speaker 1: No, I'm just looking at the results from Saturday. And
- 10:40Speaker 1: if you haven't seen Saturday Spring, it was trenchial rain
- 10:44Speaker 1: and now we gorote a Sunday which was completely different. Yeah,
- 10:48Speaker 1: cold temperatures, but it was a dry track. Now, looking
- 10:50Speaker 1: at the results from Saturday, Pekobanyaya twelfth place plus twenty
- 10:55Speaker 1: point three three nine seconds. Right, then we go to
- 10:59Speaker 1: Sunday's result. Okay, majority of these guys.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Didn't finish the race.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Pekkobaanyaya, let's say he was also handed third place, because
- 11:08Speaker 1: yeah he was.
- 11:09Speaker 2: But even the.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Gap back from Mark to Peko there is plus seven seconds.
- 11:17Speaker 2: So this is showing you what his season is like.
- 11:20Speaker 2: He's he's just he's not there.
- 11:23Speaker 3: No, that sprint on Saturday, Yes, it was raining, and
- 11:25Speaker 3: he's not like he's a bad wet weather rye. You
- 11:27Speaker 3: think towards the end of last year in Thailand when
- 11:29Speaker 3: there was a lot of championship pressure, he rode really
- 11:31Speaker 3: well in the rain there. But that was it was
- 11:34Speaker 3: borderline embarrassing that sprint. It was that bad. He was
- 11:37Speaker 3: that far off the pace. He was nowhere in qualifying.
- 11:40Speaker 3: That gap that you mentioned there, that's in the fifteen
- 11:42Speaker 3: lap race. He's a second and a half slower a
- 11:44Speaker 3: lap than the guy who won the race on the
- 11:46Speaker 3: same bike, and that's that's quite humbling for a guy
- 11:50Speaker 3: of Pecko's pedigree. Yes, he was better in the Grand Prix.
- 11:54Speaker 3: He did a lot of his good work in the
- 11:55Speaker 3: Grand Prix early, like he had a really good first
- 11:57Speaker 3: couple of laps from quite low on the greed, he
- 11:59Speaker 3: got himself into position to be able to capitalize on
- 12:03Speaker 3: other people's mistakes. That's the best you can probably say
- 12:05Speaker 3: about his race. And yeah, he got another third place,
- 12:08Speaker 3: and he seems to be getting lots of third places
- 12:09Speaker 3: this year because that's where he is. So it was
- 12:12Speaker 3: a decent save in terms of points, but there was
- 12:16Speaker 3: never one point over the weekend where you felt he
- 12:18Speaker 3: was remotely close to being on Alex Marquees's level, let
- 12:22Speaker 3: alone Mark Marquez's level. And this is kind of where
- 12:24Speaker 3: Peco's been this year. But that sprint on Saturday, I
- 12:27Speaker 3: struggle to think of a worse race or sprint that
- 12:30Speaker 3: he's had since he's been a top line Ticcattie rider.
- 12:33Speaker 3: That was absolutely dreadful.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Well, you did a stat for Fox sports dot Com
- 12:38Speaker 1: to a Ford slash Motorsport and we turned it into
- 12:41Speaker 1: a social media post as well. And we're talking about
- 12:44Speaker 1: since since the last time Fabero Cordorraro one in Germany,
- 12:49Speaker 1: which is twenty twenty two, Ji Catti's had fifty one
- 12:52Speaker 1: podiums and when you said the sat through, Vanyaya has
- 12:56Speaker 1: done twenty four of those on his own.
- 12:59Speaker 2: The rest of Mark, Yeah, he's.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Won nearly half of Decady's races since twenty twenty two.
- 13:04Speaker 1: It's hard to believe when you look at those numbers
- 13:06Speaker 1: and then you see what the season's been like this year, Like, really,
- 13:09Speaker 1: is this the same packer Banyaia?
- 13:10Speaker 3: Well, I think it puts a few things into perspective.
- 13:13Speaker 3: It looks at you know, it puts Spannya's last few
- 13:15Speaker 3: years into perspective. The one for me that I'm not
- 13:18Speaker 3: sure if you realize this. So Mark markuez onon his
- 13:20Speaker 3: tenth sprint for the season on Saturday. You know, that's
- 13:24Speaker 3: the most wins by any one rider in a season
- 13:26Speaker 3: in sprints since sprints came in three years ago. Oh hey,
- 13:28Speaker 3: Martin won nine sprints in twenty twenty three. Mark's already
- 13:32Speaker 3: beaten that with half the season to go. So this
- 13:35Speaker 3: is what we're dealing with here, Like, it's an absurd
- 13:37Speaker 3: stat to think, because you remember when the sprints came in,
- 13:40Speaker 3: we were all like, oh, this is all Hey Martin territory.
- 13:42Speaker 3: He's going to eat these things up. He's going to
- 13:43Speaker 3: be amazing in them, and predictably he was from day one,
- 13:47Speaker 3: but with no Martine on the grid, and we'll get
- 13:49Speaker 3: back to his return at some point in the rest
- 13:50Speaker 3: of this podcast. You're looking at these saturdays now and
- 13:53Speaker 3: Mark's just winning these things for fun, and it's so
- 13:56Speaker 3: demoralizing for Banyar at the moment because the only race
- 13:59Speaker 3: is one this year was when Mark crashed when he
- 14:02Speaker 3: was well ahead of him at Koser, and he inherited
- 14:04Speaker 3: that win. So given that we do have such a
- 14:06Speaker 3: decade dominated championship, I don't think it's a great surprise
- 14:09Speaker 3: that Mark's doing what he's doing. I think the two
- 14:12Speaker 3: surprises of the season one positive, one negative is how
- 14:16Speaker 3: consistently good Alex Marquez has been even when he's been
- 14:19Speaker 3: injured like last weekend, and the fact that Banyaya is
- 14:22Speaker 3: even struggling to keep him in sight or beat him
- 14:26Speaker 3: most of the time, let alone his own teammate. That
- 14:28Speaker 3: is not a conversation that you and I were expecting
- 14:30Speaker 3: to have at the start of this year.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Well, Alex Markez, like you said, came into this weekend
- 14:35Speaker 1: injured after that collision he had.
- 14:37Speaker 2: With Pedro Acosta at athen and is his left hand
- 14:41Speaker 2: that he injured.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Ryan, He's on a left hand corner track, so straightaway
- 14:45Speaker 1: is already a negative there. Looking at the results from
- 14:48Speaker 1: the sprint, he was p eight, so it was what
- 14:50Speaker 1: we said, total wet race, twelve seconds behind Mark, but
- 14:54Speaker 1: then inherited that second place. I think in the long
- 14:57Speaker 1: term he's probably going to look out, look back at
- 14:59Speaker 1: this weekend and go, are, Okay, cool, I was injured,
- 15:01Speaker 1: but I'm got second place kind of handed to me.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Yeah, put that in my back pocket.
- 15:06Speaker 1: That's going to help me maintain second in the championship.
- 15:10Speaker 3: Yeah, but he's just.
- 15:12Speaker 1: That diesel train, Like we said, that diesel truck is
- 15:14Speaker 1: just chugging along.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Yeah, keeps on keeping on. I think the key thing
- 15:18Speaker 3: for him over the course of the weekend is that
- 15:21Speaker 3: I always think it's funny when you think that bikes
- 15:22Speaker 3: and riders have body language that you can actually see
- 15:24Speaker 3: through the TV. His biggest success of the entire weekend,
- 15:28Speaker 3: like you mentioned, left handed track, when you were leading
- 15:30Speaker 3: on a left handed that had surgery. It wasn't the
- 15:32Speaker 3: biggest operation of the world for a motor GP rider,
- 15:34Speaker 3: But if any wanted to go to a track, any
- 15:38Speaker 3: track other than the Saxon Ring would have quite frankly,
- 15:40Speaker 3: a bit easier for him given that he had left
- 15:41Speaker 3: hand surgery. His biggest thing for the whole weekend was
- 15:44Speaker 3: just don't crash. Don't crash, don't crash, because if you
- 15:47Speaker 3: crash at the Saxon Ring, there's a fair chance that
- 15:49Speaker 3: you're going to injure or your left hand in one
- 15:51Speaker 3: of those accidents, given the way you come off there.
- 15:54Speaker 3: When you look at how many guys did come off
- 15:56Speaker 3: over the course of the weekend and how sketchy the
- 15:58Speaker 3: weather was and how diffy the track was on Sunday,
- 16:01Speaker 3: the biggest victory for him that he was able to
- 16:03Speaker 3: score a second place in the Grand Prix and only
- 16:06Speaker 3: lose five points to his brother in the championship standings.
- 16:09Speaker 3: But he didn't hurt himself, and that's the biggest thing
- 16:12Speaker 3: for him going forward, because we know we've got Czech
- 16:13Speaker 3: Republic this weekend and then a four week break. If
- 16:16Speaker 3: he can get out the other end of this weekend
- 16:18Speaker 3: with no accidents or no accidents that are going to
- 16:22Speaker 3: aggravate the injury that he's already got, that's almost a
- 16:24Speaker 3: bigger win than any points he can get quite frankly,
- 16:26Speaker 3: because he was one of the few guys I would
- 16:28Speaker 3: have to go back and look at everyone on the
- 16:30Speaker 3: list here, but it felt like everyone else crashed at
- 16:32Speaker 3: least once over the course of the weekend, given how
- 16:34Speaker 3: sketchy things were, and he was able to be fast
- 16:36Speaker 3: but also with a margin where he didn't hurt himself.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Well, let's talk about those crashes. But before we even
- 16:42Speaker 1: get into that, let's go Tech three were already out
- 16:46Speaker 1: this weekend with an a of as Shanini who was
- 16:49Speaker 1: diagnosed with appendicitis the poor thing going in, so he
- 16:53Speaker 1: was absent from the weekend. Then we had that crash
- 16:58Speaker 1: from Maverick Finnalez where he dislocated his shoulder I believe,
- 17:02Speaker 1: and then he went put back in but somehow managed
- 17:05Speaker 1: to do some damage or what not to the collar bone.
- 17:10Speaker 1: So then the whole tech to our team was out
- 17:12Speaker 1: for the weekend. Then we saw in Saturday's sprint that scary,
- 17:18Speaker 1: totally scary crash from Frankie Morbidelli where his whole leather
- 17:22Speaker 1: suit like you could see the airbag popped open, the
- 17:25Speaker 1: zip come down, he was just tumbling through the gravel trap.
- 17:29Speaker 2: He was then out for the weekend.
- 17:32Speaker 1: So then if we go into Sunday's list, Oh, we
- 17:35Speaker 1: also had some Katchenra who was out from a pre
- 17:38Speaker 1: injury as well, so some and an AA not absent
- 17:42Speaker 1: this weekend. Then we have Maverick injured. We had Morbidelli
- 17:45Speaker 1: didn't race, which I think is a good thing because
- 17:48Speaker 1: the way that he tumbled, and we know what he
- 17:50Speaker 1: had earlier last.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Year when he had that injury to the brain. Like,
- 17:55Speaker 2: I think that's a safe thing.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Then you look at Sunday's Grand Prix. There's one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
- 18:02Speaker 1: eight riders crashed. One of those riders crashed twice, and
- 18:06Speaker 1: that was when Iagura and Yuan Meir collided. They crashed
- 18:11Speaker 1: out on that same corner. Lorenzo Sabadori is coming through
- 18:15Speaker 1: right as the marshals were taking everything away.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Now we know most.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Of these crashes happened at turn one, But is that
- 18:23Speaker 1: just because turn one is the first right hand corner.
- 18:27Speaker 3: It's a few things. It's a trickier corner than it
- 18:30Speaker 3: looks on the TV because of how steep it is.
- 18:33Speaker 3: So the straight there, yes it's straight, but it's also
- 18:36Speaker 3: massively undulating. They climb out of the final corner raise
- 18:39Speaker 3: over the platter, it flattens out, you climb again and
- 18:41Speaker 3: drop down into turn one. The biggest factor on Sunday
- 18:45Speaker 3: with all these crashes because five of those eight guys
- 18:47Speaker 3: you mentioned crashed at turn one. Five of the eight
- 18:49Speaker 3: DNFs were at turn one. There was no tire grip
- 18:53Speaker 3: on this track because it poured with rain all Saturday
- 18:55Speaker 3: during the spring, and then it really poured with rain
- 18:58Speaker 3: Saturday night and into Sunday morning, so the track was
- 19:01Speaker 3: super green. It was like it was the start of
- 19:02Speaker 3: the weekend. The weird thing there was that some people
- 19:06Speaker 3: on the ground were telling me that the wind had
- 19:08Speaker 3: flipped around on Sunday, so it was a tail wind
- 19:12Speaker 3: into turn one. So you're pushing the riders into turn
- 19:15Speaker 3: one downhill. There's no grip because the track is as
- 19:18Speaker 3: green as it is. And what was interesting was that
- 19:21Speaker 3: you notice that all the crashes in turn one they
- 19:23Speaker 3: were in the second half of the race where people
- 19:25Speaker 3: had worn tires right. So you got to about lap
- 19:27Speaker 3: fifteen eighteen, everything's fine, and then Jane Antonio goes down,
- 19:31Speaker 3: and then a couple of laps later, Bazeki goes down,
- 19:33Speaker 3: and then a guru goes down and takes Juan Miir
- 19:35Speaker 3: with him, and then Savadori goes down. They all happened
- 19:38Speaker 3: in about a five lap span, but after about two
- 19:41Speaker 3: thirds of the race were done. So you've got a
- 19:43Speaker 3: combination of worn tires, green track, tail wind, and you know,
- 19:48Speaker 3: people trying to change ginger maps with Jack Miller was
- 19:50Speaker 3: talking about this. It was a real survival race towards
- 19:53Speaker 3: the end there. And interestingly, Pecovannaya said afterwards, he said
- 19:57Speaker 3: he had a couple of moments in tern one where
- 19:59Speaker 3: he pretty much lost the front and managed to recover them,
- 20:02Speaker 3: and he said, all right, for the rest of the
- 20:03Speaker 3: for the last eight laps of this race, I'm not
- 20:05Speaker 3: pushing at all into turn one. I'm almost going to
- 20:08Speaker 3: roll into turn one and then I'm going to push
- 20:09Speaker 3: everywhere else to try and make up for her, because
- 20:12Speaker 3: the risk reward ratio just tipped over the edge at
- 20:15Speaker 3: turn one. But it was this weird circumstance of just
- 20:18Speaker 3: literally no grip. It was like Friday FP one. There
- 20:20Speaker 3: was no grip down at all because it had all
- 20:22Speaker 3: been washed away with the rain and that tail wind.
- 20:25Speaker 3: It changed everyone's breaking markers because you're coming up out
- 20:28Speaker 3: of the bubble and you're getting shoved along by this
- 20:30Speaker 3: wind and then by the time you're too deep into
- 20:32Speaker 3: the corner on a green track and down you go.
- 20:34Speaker 1: That's pretty much what happened ten riders ten riders to
- 20:38Speaker 1: finish a race.
- 20:40Speaker 2: When was the last time that that happened? In Rotor GP?
- 20:42Speaker 3: Matt, See, this is where I'm watching the race, and
- 20:45Speaker 3: I'm going, m Philip Island. I was sinking the day
- 20:48Speaker 3: that Casey Stone And won the championship, and I'm thinking,
- 20:50Speaker 3: I reckon it's that day. So I went back and
- 20:52Speaker 3: out of look and yeah, twenty eleven Australia ten Riders
- 20:55Speaker 3: finished that race. And that was another weird race where
- 20:57Speaker 3: very few people started. Oh hai Lorenz, I'd hurt himself
- 20:59Speaker 3: in the warm up. He'd taken off the tip of
- 21:01Speaker 3: one of his fingers. He was pretty much Casey's only
- 21:03Speaker 3: championship contender. How was that that? Yeah? And so Casey
- 21:07Speaker 3: just basically had to stay upright to win the championship
- 21:09Speaker 3: on home soil that day. And because Casey and Philip pilot,
- 21:12Speaker 3: he went won the race like he always did. But
- 21:14Speaker 3: it was one of those races that we only had
- 21:16Speaker 3: an eighteen to start with. Because of all of the
- 21:18Speaker 3: various things that you talked about in the lead in
- 21:20Speaker 3: and then when they just start going down like like skittles,
- 21:23Speaker 3: towards the end, you look at someone like Alex Rinns
- 21:26Speaker 3: took six points away from the weekend for Yamaha, which
- 21:28Speaker 3: you know, you look at it on paper in the future,
- 21:30Speaker 3: you're going, oh, that was all right. Alex Rins had
- 21:31Speaker 3: a top ten finish, Alex Rinns was last, and Alex
- 21:34Speaker 3: Rinns was last by a long, long way, which is
- 21:37Speaker 3: another topic we probably need to get into at some point.
- 21:40Speaker 3: But if you stayed on your bike and you kept circulating,
- 21:43Speaker 3: no matter how slow, you were going to bank decent
- 21:45Speaker 3: points because it was just an absolute race of attrition.
- 21:49Speaker 3: And I think the disappointing thing for a couple of
- 21:51Speaker 3: these riders was there there were guys who crashed out
- 21:53Speaker 3: of really promising positions, and I thought to jan Antonio,
- 21:58Speaker 3: had he sort of sealed the deal with that second place?
- 22:00Speaker 3: He was really impressive of the entire weekend. He was
- 22:02Speaker 3: really good through Friday practice. He was one of the
- 22:04Speaker 3: guys who looked like he could actually over one lap.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Take it to Marquez didn't qualify well because he tends
- 22:09Speaker 3: to not qualify well. But he raced well all weekend
- 22:12Speaker 3: and he sort of emerged out of that big battle
- 22:15Speaker 3: pack in the early part of Sunday's race, and that
- 22:16Speaker 3: he had Perzeki's measure and he had Banyaya's measure and
- 22:19Speaker 3: a Costa was up there for a bit. Digita looked really,
- 22:22Speaker 3: really good. He was the first of these guys to
- 22:25Speaker 3: go down at turn one, and I think it sort
- 22:26Speaker 3: of caught him by surprise, and then everyone else started
- 22:29Speaker 3: going down, almost in sympathy afterwards. But look, he was
- 22:32Speaker 3: to get to catch Marquez because no one was going
- 22:34Speaker 3: to But that was a ride that felt like it
- 22:36Speaker 3: probably deserved a podium in a decent result. And we've
- 22:39Speaker 3: talked about this for a couple of podcasts. Now I
- 22:41Speaker 3: do think he's going to come forward a fora a
- 22:43Speaker 3: bit in the second half of the year because the
- 22:44Speaker 3: speeds there, in the bikes there, He's getting more and
- 22:47Speaker 3: more confident. Just a shame that didn't work out for
- 22:50Speaker 3: him on Sunday.
- 22:51Speaker 1: I heard him say post race though, that he was
- 22:55Speaker 1: happy that he crashed out of the podium position because
- 22:58Speaker 1: it showed that he was fighting for it rather than
- 23:01Speaker 1: being fifteenth, seventeenth and crashing out further down the field.
- 23:06Speaker 2: I feel like you can kind of look at that
- 23:08Speaker 2: two ways, as in.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Why are you happy that you crashed out of like
- 23:12Speaker 1: why would you?
- 23:12Speaker 2: Why are you not wanting it more?
- 23:14Speaker 1: But I think from his point of view, it's like,
- 23:17Speaker 1: my speed was there, you know, it was Mark, it
- 23:19Speaker 1: was me, and then it wasn't Aprillia.
- 23:21Speaker 2: You know, where's Peco?
- 23:23Speaker 1: Where's Alex there?
- 23:24Speaker 2: Further back?
- 23:24Speaker 1: Okay, then the mistake happened, but it changes in the variables, right, Yeah.
- 23:29Speaker 3: I reckon that he feels that that speed is repeatable.
- 23:32Speaker 3: I think that's probably why he was quite optimistic. I
- 23:34Speaker 3: don't think this is just some outlier one off at
- 23:36Speaker 3: this particular circuit. He'll be quick at Bruno, He'll be
- 23:38Speaker 3: quick in most places because I think he's you remember,
- 23:41Speaker 3: he came into this preseason super injury compromised after the
- 23:43Speaker 3: dumb thing that he did so pag what he decided
- 23:46Speaker 3: to do really at the end of the first day
- 23:47Speaker 3: of the Test and came off and broke the same
- 23:48Speaker 3: colo mode he'd broken last year. But I think he
- 23:51Speaker 3: realizes that the speed is repeatable, So yeah, you'd be
- 23:53Speaker 3: annoyed in the moment that you chucked a podium away.
- 23:56Speaker 3: But I suspect that we're going to We know that
- 23:59Speaker 3: decade's so good, and I suspect we're going to see
- 24:01Speaker 3: him on podiums plural in the very short term.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Another writer who I hope the speed is repeatable for
- 24:08Speaker 1: is Marco bet Zeki because I missed all the Joge
- 24:11Speaker 1: Martin drama that's been going on off track. It's been
- 24:14Speaker 1: so refreshing to see Marco abt Zeki fighting the front,
- 24:18Speaker 1: fighting for those podium places, and just to have an
- 24:21Speaker 1: aprillia there another manufacturer up close to the front. It's
- 24:24Speaker 1: a shame that there's the track house guys aren't following
- 24:28Speaker 1: suit and it's just been Marco at the moment. But
- 24:31Speaker 1: I mean another sprint prodeum for him.
- 24:34Speaker 2: I'm sure he's over the moon with that.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I reckon that was an important one too, because
- 24:38Speaker 3: you know, we know he'd wanted Silverstone, and Silverston has
- 24:41Speaker 3: always been a good track for a Prillier. He was
- 24:43Speaker 3: very good at acid and that's always been a good
- 24:45Speaker 3: track for him. So it's almost like we needed a
- 24:47Speaker 3: bigger sample size of all right, you know you've bett
- 24:49Speaker 3: a good track for Aprilia. You've betted a good track
- 24:51Speaker 3: for yourself. Can you do it somewhere else? I think
- 24:55Speaker 3: this is super interesting for two reasons. A what you
- 24:57Speaker 3: just said about the fact that it's another manufacturer in
- 24:59Speaker 3: the mix. It looks like that's something that's going to
- 25:01Speaker 3: translate to multiple circuits now. But doesn't it get you thinking,
- 25:05Speaker 3: like hmm. Once Jorge Martin gets fully fit and he
- 25:08Speaker 3: gets up to speed with what Napullia can do, won't
- 25:12Speaker 3: that be interesting towards the end of the year, Because
- 25:13Speaker 3: if that's a bike that can achieve podiums, a fully
- 25:18Speaker 3: fit Jollgey Martine is absolute top shelf. We saw that
- 25:21Speaker 3: last year, we saw it the year before. On balance,
- 25:23Speaker 3: he's probably going to achieve more when he's completely being
- 25:26Speaker 3: Joge Martine than Marco Berseki's going to. So that's interesting
- 25:30Speaker 3: for me because right now that's clearly the second best
- 25:32Speaker 3: bike in motor GP. You add a world champion on
- 25:35Speaker 3: there that will have some level of motivation. We don't
- 25:37Speaker 3: know how much we're about to find out, but you
- 25:40Speaker 3: add Martine on that bike and he gets a sniff
- 25:42Speaker 3: of being competitive and having good results there, he could
- 25:46Speaker 3: be a bit of a random wild card for the
- 25:48Speaker 3: end of this season. Martine once he gets confident and
- 25:51Speaker 3: gets his full fitness and race fitness back, because he's
- 25:55Speaker 3: not scared of anybody. We saw it last year. He'll
- 25:57Speaker 3: go will to will with Banyai, He'll go will to
- 25:59Speaker 3: will with Mark. We've never really seen like a really
- 26:03Speaker 3: full on, motivated fit Martin up against Marquez in the
- 26:06Speaker 3: mood that Marquez is in at the moment. So when
- 26:08Speaker 3: we know that it's not going to be the championship
- 26:10Speaker 3: or anything super meaningful because the way the season's panned out,
- 26:13Speaker 3: but we might get some pretty explosive races towards the
- 26:16Speaker 3: end of the year, I reckon.
- 26:18Speaker 1: So Martin's coming back this weekend for Bruno, it's the
- 26:22Speaker 1: first time Reto GP have been to the Czech Republic
- 26:25Speaker 1: since twenty twenty. The track's been resurfaced, so it's going
- 26:29Speaker 1: to be really interesting, I think as well, because we've got.
- 26:31Speaker 2: The veterans like Mark.
- 26:33Speaker 1: The last time Juan mir was that he was on
- 26:35Speaker 1: a Suzuki, right, So there's all these changes. But johe Martin,
- 26:40Speaker 1: I think everyone's going to be looking at him this weekend.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Do you think I'm probably already jumping the gun with this.
- 26:48Speaker 1: But do you think Martin's going to come back and
- 26:51Speaker 1: be strong instantly or do you think he's gonna He's
- 26:55Speaker 1: going to take his time this time because of everything
- 26:59Speaker 1: that's been happening.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I reckon. There's elements of both here because of
- 27:04Speaker 3: the way the calendar falls, Like we've got a full
- 27:07Speaker 3: week break after Bruno. The absolute last thing Jorge Martine
- 27:11Speaker 3: needs to do it Bruno is hurt himself. He needs
- 27:14Speaker 3: a full race weekend where he can do a full
- 27:16Speaker 3: sprint distance and he can do a full Grand Prix
- 27:18Speaker 3: distance and he can get used to fighting with people again.
- 27:21Speaker 3: The points are immaterial because who cares how many points
- 27:24Speaker 3: he gets this year? Really, and it certainly doesn't matter
- 27:26Speaker 3: this much for the time being. The biggest thing he
- 27:28Speaker 3: can do this weekend is shake the rust off because
- 27:31Speaker 3: there's going to be some race rust. He has not
- 27:33Speaker 3: raced a motor GP like properly. You know, he hasn't
- 27:35Speaker 3: completed a full race since last November, let's be honest,
- 27:38Speaker 3: So shake the rust off, get used to the way
- 27:40Speaker 3: the team works operationally. What's his motivation, Like, how does
- 27:43Speaker 3: he feel physically, because we know that he's only been
- 27:45Speaker 3: pas medically to ride in the last couple of weeks,
- 27:48Speaker 3: so he's clearly going to be underdone. The one thing
- 27:51Speaker 3: he cannot do this weekend is hurt himself. So I
- 27:54Speaker 3: think what you'll see is, because we've got this month
- 27:56Speaker 3: after Bruno, he won't be cautious or circumtant. He'll still ride,
- 28:01Speaker 3: but he's not going to be pushing at ten tenths.
- 28:03Speaker 3: He might be at like eight and a half tenths
- 28:05Speaker 3: or something, because it's like, you've got a championship to
- 28:07Speaker 3: think about. Get through that, have another month of training,
- 28:11Speaker 3: getting your fitness up a lot more, riding some superbike somewhere,
- 28:13Speaker 3: doing what you need to do, and then you know
- 28:15Speaker 3: how this second half of the season goes like it
- 28:17Speaker 3: feels like it just comes and goes in a flash
- 28:19Speaker 3: because there's so many double headers and it comes super
- 28:21Speaker 3: super fast. What he does in those last ten races
- 28:25Speaker 3: will be more representative of who he is. I think
- 28:27Speaker 3: this weekend the main goal is to get back deal
- 28:30Speaker 3: with a bunch of annoying journos in the press conference.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Like me, he'll be asking him a thousand questions about
- 28:34Speaker 3: things he doesn't want to talk about. Get some points
- 28:37Speaker 3: and then go on his holidays for four weeks and
- 28:38Speaker 3: do some training and then come back for Austria and
- 28:41Speaker 3: be ready to go.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that.
- 28:43Speaker 1: It is definitely going to be full on and I
- 28:45Speaker 1: fully jumped the gun there talking about Bruno when we
- 28:48Speaker 1: still have.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Heaps to catch up on from this weekend.
- 28:51Speaker 1: But I want to talk about Luca Marini because for me,
- 28:55Speaker 1: just a phenomenal ride. You think it's his first Grand
- 28:57Speaker 1: Prix back after that nasty accident. He had well training
- 29:00Speaker 1: first to zook. You know, he was in a hospital
- 29:03Speaker 1: bed in Japan for so long and then he's come
- 29:05Speaker 1: back and you could see that camera after Sunday's Grand Prix.
- 29:09Speaker 1: You could see him just wincing in pain and the
- 29:12Speaker 1: fact that okay, he's not fully one hundred percent, but
- 29:16Speaker 1: you had to be on your bike at the end
- 29:18Speaker 1: of the day. You just had to ride the track
- 29:20Speaker 1: as you could cross that finish line. And he didn't
- 29:23Speaker 1: finish last.
- 29:24Speaker 2: He was six.
- 29:25Speaker 1: He was okay, twenty four seconds behind Marquez, but he
- 29:29Speaker 1: was six. He wasn't down with Alex Renz who was
- 29:32Speaker 1: forty seconds behind.
- 29:33Speaker 3: Well, and for him to come back this is we
- 29:35Speaker 3: know that it's not the highest speed track on the calendar,
- 29:38Speaker 3: Saxon Ring, but it's so random in that the configuration
- 29:41Speaker 3: of it, and you're hanging off the left side of
- 29:43Speaker 3: the bike the entire time. He was actually getting sore
- 29:46Speaker 3: on the right side of his body because he was
- 29:48Speaker 3: sitting in a different position to try and compensate for
- 29:50Speaker 3: the fact that his body's not really in any sort
- 29:53Speaker 3: of condition to do thirty laps around a track like that.
- 29:57Speaker 3: It's amazing what adrenaline does. And you give a guy
- 29:59Speaker 3: a chair as to you know, if you were telling
- 30:01Speaker 3: him that he was going to finish sixth and he
- 30:03Speaker 3: was going to do thirty laps and how sorry it
- 30:04Speaker 3: was going to be. If you told him before the race,
- 30:06Speaker 3: he'd say, no, thanks, I don't really fancy that. But
- 30:09Speaker 3: there's nothing like the smell of competition and getting back
- 30:11Speaker 3: into it so hugely commendable for him to be able
- 30:15Speaker 3: to clearly push through the pain barrier and come back.
- 30:18Speaker 3: It sounded like he probably came back a little bit
- 30:20Speaker 3: earlier than most people were expecting. But again, it's one
- 30:22Speaker 3: of those things like if he gets to through these
- 30:24Speaker 3: two rounds, doesn't hurt himself, can reset over the summer break,
- 30:27Speaker 3: but given what he's gone through in the last couple
- 30:30Speaker 3: of months. That was a really really brave effort by
- 30:34Speaker 3: Let's not forget he's a writer who's out of contract
- 30:36Speaker 3: at the end of this year, and I reckon if
- 30:39Speaker 3: he had the comfort of a contract for next year,
- 30:42Speaker 3: I don't reckon. That's a race that you do. Maybe
- 30:44Speaker 3: you might sit out for another round or two. It's like,
- 30:46Speaker 3: you know what, I'll come back after the break. I'll
- 30:47Speaker 3: be good. He needs to get back and show what
- 30:50Speaker 3: it is that he can do, be it for Honda
- 30:52Speaker 3: or for someone else who would like to employ him.
- 30:54Speaker 3: And coming back and doing that when you're so clearly
- 30:57Speaker 3: injury compromised, like big tick from me. It was a
- 30:59Speaker 3: really really impressive effort.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Have you heard is Luca going to compete in the
- 31:04Speaker 1: Suzuka eight Hour? Have you heard any updates on that?
- 31:07Speaker 3: My understanding is that he will. I think when you've
- 31:10Speaker 3: got a chance to ride for a Japanese manufacturer at Suzuka,
- 31:12Speaker 3: that's not something you take lightly. So he'll clearly still
- 31:15Speaker 3: be there. I mean, look, it's the funny thing. It's
- 31:17Speaker 3: an the eight Hours. It is a true endurance test, obviously,
- 31:20Speaker 3: but it's a very different style of riding and you're
- 31:22Speaker 3: sharing the bike with two other riders, But to ride
- 31:24Speaker 3: for a Honda team at Honda owns Suzuka at such
- 31:28Speaker 3: a prestigious event, like you would not miss that for
- 31:31Speaker 3: the world. I mean, we obviously know Jack Miller's doing it,
- 31:33Speaker 3: but my understanding is that he's going to be there
- 31:35Speaker 3: because you don't put all that effort in to go
- 31:37Speaker 3: along and go through all of the training and how
- 31:40Speaker 3: particular it is to race it that particular track. But
- 31:42Speaker 3: my understanding is that it will be Zako and Marini
- 31:44Speaker 3: and Miller that will all beyond the grid start of August,
- 31:48Speaker 3: and you.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Guys can catch the Suzuka eight Hour on both Fox
- 31:51Speaker 1: Sports and ko all the race.
- 31:54Speaker 2: The whole eight hours is going to be broadcasted live.
- 31:57Speaker 1: So I mean, if you want to sit on the
- 31:58Speaker 1: sofa for eight hours and watch some rotorbikes go around Telly,
- 32:01Speaker 1: by all means do it. Otherwise you can catch it
- 32:03Speaker 1: up when suits you. But you mentioned Jack Miller there.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Let's talk about Jack because you wrote a really interesting piece.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Now we know that Jack's up a contract at the
- 32:13Speaker 1: end of this year, we know Top Racks sign with
- 32:15Speaker 1: Prama High. Everything like that there's your shot. Take it
- 32:18Speaker 1: if you're playing along. But let's look at Jack's results
- 32:22Speaker 1: from the weekends, because you told me a P five
- 32:25Speaker 1: from Jack that was the best sprint result he has
- 32:29Speaker 1: since last year?
- 32:30Speaker 3: Did you say Austria last year? So it was his
- 32:33Speaker 3: best sprint that he's had in the last twenty So
- 32:36Speaker 3: that's going back to Austria in August last year. So
- 32:38Speaker 3: he'd only scored one point in the sprints the entire year,
- 32:40Speaker 3: which is at Silverstone before last Saturday. And the really
- 32:45Speaker 3: key point here is that we know we're coming to
- 32:47Speaker 3: this crunch time here where Yamaha have said we want
- 32:50Speaker 3: to make a decision on who's going to be top
- 32:52Speaker 3: rax teammate by the summer break. Now, the summer break
- 32:55Speaker 3: starts on Monday, basically, so one day after the Czech
- 32:58Speaker 3: Republic Grand Prix. Jack picked a really really good time
- 33:02Speaker 3: to have his best weekend of the season and scored
- 33:05Speaker 3: thirteen points over the weekend. That's his strongest single weekend
- 33:08Speaker 3: of the season. Finished eighth in the Grand Prix. Obviously
- 33:11Speaker 3: stayed on which many people didn't, which was super important.
- 33:14Speaker 3: But it was more the fact that you look at
- 33:16Speaker 3: the two people that are potentially in the frame to
- 33:19Speaker 3: deny him that place. At Pramat Gamaha, he was ahead
- 33:22Speaker 3: of Miguel Olivera in every single on track session for
- 33:25Speaker 3: the entire weekend. Jack made Q two. Olivera did not.
- 33:29Speaker 3: He was well behind Jack in the sprint and then
- 33:31Speaker 3: he crashed out super early in the Grand Prix. So
- 33:32Speaker 3: Jack had that covered for the entirety of the weekend.
- 33:36Speaker 3: The other name that had been floated around, which I
- 33:38Speaker 3: mentioned in the piece you just referenced there was There's
- 33:40Speaker 3: been a lot of buzz about Diogo Marrera coming up
- 33:42Speaker 3: through Moto two for a lot of obvious reasons. He's
- 33:45Speaker 3: clearly really talented, he's clearly really fast. He has an
- 33:48Speaker 3: association with Yamaha Brazil from a lot he trains on
- 33:51Speaker 3: Yamaha bikes, and he's back home in Brazil, and of
- 33:53Speaker 3: course we have a Brazilian Grand Prix next year, so
- 33:56Speaker 3: you know there's a lot of boxes being ticked for
- 33:58Speaker 3: a young, up and coming rider. And when Yamaha started
- 34:01Speaker 3: this second team, it's a bit like we see it
- 34:05Speaker 3: in Formula One with Red Bull and whatever. The second
- 34:07Speaker 3: team racing balls this year is being called. The second
- 34:10Speaker 3: team is almost like a proving Ground training school to
- 34:13Speaker 3: bring young guys in to potentially elevate them to the
- 34:15Speaker 3: main team, and because Pramak Yamaha was new this year,
- 34:18Speaker 3: they went with a couple of thirty year olds because
- 34:20Speaker 3: they are available and they needed data and they needed information.
- 34:24Speaker 3: The long term future of that team for me is
- 34:26Speaker 3: to bring younger riders through to see if they've got
- 34:28Speaker 3: what it takes to step up to the main Yamaha team.
- 34:31Speaker 3: So you're not going to have a pair of thirty
- 34:32Speaker 3: year olds in there for the long long term, short
- 34:35Speaker 3: term this is what plays to Jack's favor, but also
- 34:38Speaker 3: short term. Marera did I don't know how you feel
- 34:42Speaker 3: about this. That Moto iiO race on Sunday at Saxon Ring,
- 34:46Speaker 3: he showed you why he's probably going to be in
- 34:48Speaker 3: Motor GP. He also showed you why he's probably not
- 34:50Speaker 3: going to be in Motor GP yet because he was
- 34:53Speaker 3: twenty fifth on the grid where he screwed up qualifying
- 34:55Speaker 3: in the rain, and he was awesome in that Grand Prix.
- 34:58Speaker 3: It was like watching twenty twelve Via and Mark Marquez
- 35:01Speaker 3: in Moto two is just carving through guys and all
- 35:04Speaker 3: of a sudden you look up and you go, oh
- 35:06Speaker 3: my god, he's fourth and there's still plenty of laps
- 35:08Speaker 3: to go in the race. And then he came off
- 35:10Speaker 3: second best in a bit of a skirmish with Jake
- 35:12Speaker 3: Dixon for third, and then went off onto the grass
- 35:15Speaker 3: and pulled straight back onto the circuit, not really looking
- 35:18Speaker 3: at where he was going or what was coming up
- 35:19Speaker 3: behind him, and David Altso ran absolutely full speed, never
- 35:24Speaker 3: checked up straight into the back of him. I'm far
- 35:27Speaker 3: too old and cynic all these days to get too
- 35:28Speaker 3: excited about crashes all things like that, but that literally
- 35:31Speaker 3: got me out of my seat with my hand over
- 35:32Speaker 3: my mouth, going, oh my god, that's like an aeroplane
- 35:35Speaker 3: accident because you don't see crashes like that. They are
- 35:38Speaker 3: so lucky, the pair of them that they didn't sustain
- 35:41Speaker 3: major injuries. And Marrera has been hit with a pit
- 35:45Speaker 3: lane start for this week's Moto two race at the
- 35:48Speaker 3: Czech Republic, and I reckon that's pretty lenient, quite frankly,
- 35:53Speaker 3: because he did an absolutely crazy thing that endangered himself
- 35:58Speaker 3: and another rider, and I wouldn't have minded them parking
- 36:02Speaker 3: him for a race and said sorry, you're not racing
- 36:04Speaker 3: at Bruno next weekend. That's just absolutely crazy. So I
- 36:07Speaker 3: think in one Moto two race we saw the speed
- 36:10Speaker 3: and the decisiveness and the ability that the guy's got
- 36:13Speaker 3: which makes him look like a murder GP rider in
- 36:14Speaker 3: the future. We also saw a completely stupid crash where
- 36:18Speaker 3: it probably shows you that that future might be twenty
- 36:20Speaker 3: twenty seven or twenty eight or whatever that's going to be,
- 36:23Speaker 3: which in a very long winded way, which if you've
- 36:25Speaker 3: read my story, it was very long winded. Everything aligned
- 36:29Speaker 3: this weekend to me, I reckon that Jack Miller has
- 36:32Speaker 3: one hand and four fingers on a murder GP contract
- 36:35Speaker 3: with promat Gamahah next year, and it would not surprise
- 36:38Speaker 3: me if at all, if that gets announced at Bruno
- 36:40Speaker 3: this weekend.
- 36:42Speaker 2: I think, Yeah, you pretty much hit the nail on
- 36:43Speaker 2: the head.
- 36:44Speaker 1: I completely agree with everything you just said that the
- 36:47Speaker 1: Diego Morera thing. Let's move on to Moto two because
- 36:50Speaker 1: we've pretty much wrapped up GP there. But let's talk
- 36:53Speaker 1: about Moto two and then let's come back to Diego Mora.
- 36:57Speaker 1: But Jake Dixon was on pole jumped the start. Oh
- 37:02Speaker 1: and then once you saw it and he knew straight away, right,
- 37:05Speaker 1: you could just see him shaking his head. Then he
- 37:09Speaker 1: had that small collision with Jake into turn one, so
- 37:13Speaker 1: then Sena got that double long lap penalty. Then as
- 37:17Speaker 1: the race progress, let's then go obviously that incident with
- 37:22Speaker 1: Marrera happened.
- 37:24Speaker 2: I think I agree with you.
- 37:25Speaker 1: I think Marrera, you can just tell he's still a teenager,
- 37:30Speaker 1: you're a young adult. Like he needs to get that
- 37:33Speaker 1: experience because he's only been in the World Championship, the
- 37:37Speaker 1: Moto GP World Championship for a few years now, right,
- 37:40Speaker 1: so he's come up from Junior GP. I think that
- 37:44Speaker 1: he needs to still get a bit more of that
- 37:46Speaker 1: thorough experience before you do go.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Into Moto GP.
- 37:51Speaker 1: I don't think we're ever going to see another Jack
- 37:53Speaker 1: Miller go from Moroto three straight up to Moto GP,
- 37:56Speaker 1: because I think you have to do you have to
- 37:58Speaker 1: do your exams, you have to past the test and
- 38:00Speaker 1: then you'll go up right.
- 38:03Speaker 2: But for me, in Moto.
- 38:08Speaker 1: Two, the fact that Aaron Connett still finished in the
- 38:13Speaker 1: top ten and you see him in pain, I mean
- 38:18Speaker 1: Saxon Ring and the crashes and the fact of like
- 38:21Speaker 1: the red flag and everything, and you could hear Barry
- 38:23Speaker 1: Belts and Jake Dixon being like wipe all out the
- 38:26Speaker 1: red flag. You know, I will saving my tires until
- 38:28Speaker 1: the end. But when you saw that camera on Aaron Connett,
- 38:32Speaker 1: in him wincing in pain or you could feel it.
- 38:35Speaker 2: I could feel it through the TV map.
- 38:38Speaker 3: Yeah, that was a monster, monster crash. I was pretty
- 38:41Speaker 3: surprised he even race, quite frankly, but we know he's
- 38:44Speaker 3: pretty tough and he's certainly not one who's going to
- 38:46Speaker 3: be backwards in a battle. That was hugely impressive. I mean,
- 38:50Speaker 3: the red flag. No one likes to see a race
- 38:52Speaker 3: stop with a red flag, let's be perfectly honest. But
- 38:54Speaker 3: we know that there's world TV time schedules to keep
- 38:57Speaker 3: and that sort of thing, and you know, by the
- 38:58Speaker 3: time they would have cleaned everything up and re started
- 39:00Speaker 3: the race for what two laps at the end, it
- 39:02Speaker 3: was probably not going to be worth it for everyone involved.
- 39:05Speaker 3: So that was a shame tactically for some of these
- 39:06Speaker 3: guys that were saving tires, but probably the correct decision.
- 39:09Speaker 3: But I must admit there was a part of me
- 39:11Speaker 3: when I mean the sometimes with these jump starts they
- 39:13Speaker 3: look a little bit marginal. That was so not marginal
- 39:16Speaker 3: by ages on Sunday, unfortunately, and as soon as that happened.
- 39:19Speaker 3: There was a part of me that literally pushed the
- 39:20Speaker 3: chair out from the desk and just put their head
- 39:22Speaker 3: down and went, well that's the end of that then,
- 39:24Speaker 3: And I mean it's the way it worked out. He
- 39:25Speaker 3: managed to get back through and at least score some points,
- 39:27Speaker 3: but you could just see on the rundown to term
- 39:29Speaker 3: one he was absolutely filthy with himself because I think
- 39:33Speaker 3: he knew he had the pace to probably finish on
- 39:36Speaker 3: the podium. So that's definitely one that got away for him.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Yeah, so soon I finished eleventh, and I'm just looking
- 39:42Speaker 1: at the results. Seven writers crashed out of Moto two,
- 39:45Speaker 1: so we had eight and a Moto GP and obviously
- 39:48Speaker 1: X four that didn't start, and then we had seven
- 39:51Speaker 1: writers crash out of Moto two. Then let's go to
- 39:56Speaker 1: Moto three, our favorite, where it's the fifteen or so
- 40:01Speaker 1: writers in one group going into turn one together a
- 40:04Speaker 1: lap after lap. Munios finished first ahead of Gears and Rueida.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Now Matt for me, Ruaida, he is missed a consistency
- 40:16Speaker 1: this year. It's not always about winning the race, it's
- 40:19Speaker 1: about banking those points. It's like the it's the Peko
- 40:22Speaker 1: Bagnyaya version of when Peco was trying to get the
- 40:25Speaker 1: championship right.
- 40:26Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he's read the book on how you build
- 40:28Speaker 3: a championship. And I use the word build because it's
- 40:31Speaker 3: not about getting like one or two headline results and
- 40:33Speaker 3: then being nowhere. He's always there and thereabouts. He'll win
- 40:37Speaker 3: races when he can, but he'll bank good points when
- 40:39Speaker 3: he won't, and that's how you build a championship over
- 40:42Speaker 3: twenty two rounds. I'm frankly not surprised at all to
- 40:45Speaker 3: see him move his way towards the front of the
- 40:48Speaker 3: group and be there when it matters towards the end
- 40:50Speaker 3: of the race. But I guess the fun thing for
- 40:51Speaker 3: us was that, you know that front group of about
- 40:53Speaker 3: eight or nine that broke away at the end. It
- 40:55Speaker 3: was nice to see both see both ossies in that
- 40:57Speaker 3: shot and you look at them going, Okay, they're in
- 41:00Speaker 3: with a chancey, they're right in the train. And to
- 41:02Speaker 3: see both Joe Kelso and Jacob Rolston particularly have strong
- 41:05Speaker 3: results was nice because that was a no holds barred race.
- 41:10Speaker 3: There's Moto three years in most places, but at the
- 41:11Speaker 3: Saxid Ring, My.
- 41:12Speaker 1: God, yeah no, like you said, so, Jacob Wilstone was
- 41:17Speaker 1: pa across the line, Joe Kelso six and our key
- 41:20Speaker 1: we across the Pond Cormack Buchanan.
- 41:23Speaker 2: He was a top ten his.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Best results so far in the World Championship. So yeah,
- 41:28Speaker 1: it was nice to see the guys from down Under
- 41:30Speaker 1: and obviously New Zealand representing us and being closer to
- 41:33Speaker 1: the front. And I think for Jacob just to touch
- 41:36Speaker 1: on that this is the confidence he needs. We knew
- 41:40Speaker 1: in I think it was Migello where he was strong
- 41:44Speaker 1: there and then he had that technical issue and wasn't
- 41:48Speaker 1: able to finish the race. You could see that really
- 41:51Speaker 1: got to him and I think he needs this boost
- 41:53Speaker 1: of this top ten. While okay on paper it's only
- 41:58Speaker 1: a PA, I think for him it's that set because
- 42:00Speaker 1: he is going into the second part of the year.
- 42:03Speaker 1: He doesn't have a contract for next year, he is
- 42:05Speaker 1: with Red Bull, Katim Tech three, the pressure everything starting
- 42:09Speaker 1: the season a few races late, everything's adding up. I
- 42:12Speaker 1: think he needed that PA to boost him for the
- 42:15Speaker 1: rest of the season.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:16Speaker 3: And it's a nice base, like it's a platform which
- 42:19Speaker 3: you can build, like this is all you want to
- 42:20Speaker 3: sort of wrap up this first half of the season.
- 42:22Speaker 3: A couple of decent results. I mean, he gained ten
- 42:24Speaker 3: places in the race from where he started, which is
- 42:25Speaker 3: pretty impressive in itself, but just moving steadily forward and
- 42:30Speaker 3: we know there's a good rider in there. Like you said,
- 42:31Speaker 3: there's been so many things that have tripped him up
- 42:34Speaker 3: this year that's been difficult. It feels like he's been
- 42:36Speaker 3: sort of swimming upstream for the whole year to try
- 42:38Speaker 3: and get back to where he wanted to be at
- 42:39Speaker 3: the start of it. So if this is the first
- 42:41Speaker 3: building plot for that, then that's terrific. But yeah, I
- 42:44Speaker 3: just enjoyed seeing both OSSI's in the front group.
- 42:48Speaker 1: So as we mentioned a little bit earlier when I
- 42:49Speaker 1: was really excited to talk about Juai mantine A Moto
- 42:52Speaker 1: GP heads Sabruno next weekend of the first time since
- 42:56Speaker 1: twenty twenty, I was looking back at some old footage
- 42:59Speaker 1: for a sports socials earlier today, and like I said,
- 43:02Speaker 1: Juan Miir was on the Yamaha and even like the
- 43:05Speaker 1: previous races where Lorenzo and Rossi and whatnot, like Bruno's
- 43:11Speaker 1: a pretty iconic track that's been on the Moto GP calendar,
- 43:14Speaker 1: says Shane that it hasn't been on for a few
- 43:16Speaker 1: years now coming back there. It's resurfaced now and this
- 43:20Speaker 1: is where I'm starting to think, Okay, how's he going
- 43:23Speaker 1: to play out this weekend? Matt, and I want to
- 43:24Speaker 1: get your opinion on this because we've got so many
- 43:27Speaker 1: rookies in the Moto GP paddock now Moto GP grit
- 43:31Speaker 1: who've never ridden there. Yeah, absolutely, or on a METOGP bike.
- 43:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:35Speaker 1: But then you've got Mark Marquez, Alex Runs, juanmir All,
- 43:39Speaker 1: these guys who've ridden there on past GP bikes, but
- 43:41Speaker 1: the track's been resurfaced. How do you think that's going
- 43:45Speaker 1: to play out and we're going to see the veterans
- 43:47Speaker 1: exceeding quite early on in the or do you think
- 43:49Speaker 1: it's just going to be an even playing field.
- 43:51Speaker 3: The one name that you didn't mention there and he
- 43:53Speaker 3: never gets to run on this podcast because you've been
- 43:55Speaker 3: kind of invisible all year. The last rider to win
- 43:57Speaker 3: when we went there for MotoGP was Brad Binder on
- 43:59Speaker 3: a case And you forget that was such a strange
- 44:02Speaker 3: season twenty twenty because it was round three, but it
- 44:05Speaker 3: was about August because we went race the first six
- 44:07Speaker 3: months of the year, there was no one there. It
- 44:09Speaker 3: was a really really strange one. It's the last time
- 44:11Speaker 3: we went to Bruneau. It's obviously it's usually such a
- 44:13Speaker 3: vibrant race. It's such a massive crowd that turns up there,
- 44:16Speaker 3: so to see them racing around that awesome, big open
- 44:19Speaker 3: circuit with no one there was really weird. Yeah, been
- 44:22Speaker 3: to the most recent winner there, bizarrely, not someone we've
- 44:24Speaker 3: talked about very much on the pod this year. But
- 44:26Speaker 3: getting back to what you just said, then, I think
- 44:29Speaker 3: guys who've got motor GP reps around there are going
- 44:32Speaker 3: to start with a significant advantage because we're not going
- 44:34Speaker 3: back to the same Bruno because if you know, after
- 44:39Speaker 3: the teams had tested there the other week, they reckon
- 44:41Speaker 3: that the lap times might be about two seconds faster.
- 44:43Speaker 3: And that's not a slow track to start with. It's
- 44:46Speaker 3: a proper iconic motor GP track. I'm super glad we've
- 44:48Speaker 3: found a way to get back there because you know
- 44:52Speaker 3: those big, wide open tracks with massive crowds, and the
- 44:54Speaker 3: thing I love about Bruno it's so wide as a track,
- 44:58Speaker 3: so it's not just one line into corners. You'll see
- 45:01Speaker 3: guys fan out into the breaking zones and it's a
- 45:03Speaker 3: track where you can pass and repass. It's a track
- 45:06Speaker 3: that invites fights. It's one of the great things about
- 45:09Speaker 3: that particular layout, So it's one of the best layouts
- 45:13Speaker 3: on the calendar. It's going to be a top five
- 45:14Speaker 3: layout on the calendar. It's really good that they found
- 45:17Speaker 3: a way to find the money to get the thing
- 45:19Speaker 3: resurfaced and get it back on the calendar. I'm just
- 45:21Speaker 3: really looking forward to see bikes on that circle again
- 45:23Speaker 3: because it's one of the best ones and it always
- 45:26Speaker 3: throws up good races. But going back to what you
- 45:28Speaker 3: were saying, I think experience counts. I think guys who've
- 45:31Speaker 3: been there before on motor GP Machinery are going to
- 45:33Speaker 3: start with a pretty significant advantage.
- 45:36Speaker 1: Well, Bruno is up this weekend, like we just said,
- 45:39Speaker 1: and you guys can catch all the action live on
- 45:43Speaker 1: Fox Sports and KO big thanks to the team as
- 45:46Speaker 1: Shannon's Insurance for sponsoring the Pittok podcast. If you want
- 45:50Speaker 1: to read any of Math's articles that we spoke about
- 45:53Speaker 1: or the ones he's got coming up, which he was
- 45:54Speaker 1: telling me before there's something pretty cool coming out at
- 45:57Speaker 1: the time of this podcast as well, you can head
- 46:00Speaker 1: to foxsports dot com dot au, Forward Slash Motorsport or

- 46:18Speaker 2: Vermullen, that's all for now, and we're going to be
