- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast Powered by the Nation, Part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:48SPEAKER_04: Tristan, um, I think we should officially change the podcast theme to Florida Atlantic instead of Texas Tech.
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: What do you think?
- 0:57SPEAKER_08: Yeah, well, how do we make that roll off the tongue easily, though?
- 1:00SPEAKER_08: Talk talking talking uh talking owls.
- 1:02SPEAKER_08: Talking owls, hoot hoot.
- 1:05SPEAKER_08: I mean, but then people might think we're like, we're all about those like nerds and down in Houston at Rice, you know?
- 1:10SPEAKER_04: Like I mean, yeah.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: I mean, I guess people think of rice before they think of FAU.
- 1:16SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I would say so.
- 1:18SPEAKER_08: What's the first owl?
- 1:19SPEAKER_08: Who who's got the Al mascot supremacy?
- 1:22SPEAKER_04: Uh it's probably Rice.
- 1:25SPEAKER_04: Big Rice?
- 1:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they've been around longer, haven't they?
- 1:28SPEAKER_08: FAU they're definitely than FAU, yeah, for sure.
- 1:31SPEAKER_04: But what about Temple?
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: Oh, Temple's actually like in a legit well now now them and Rice are in the same conference, aren't they?
- 1:39SPEAKER_08: Yeah, soon to be.
- 1:41SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 1:42SPEAKER_08: That's tough.
- 1:42SPEAKER_08: That's the thing.
- 1:44SPEAKER_04: Temples had more well, I don't know.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: Rice was good in the 60s.
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: So I don't know.
- 1:51SPEAKER_04: What do you think?
- 1:51SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:52SPEAKER_08: I I okay.
- 1:53SPEAKER_08: You know what?
- 1:54SPEAKER_08: Since this is an FAU podcast, I'm just gonna say that FAU has that uh nomicure on lock.
- 2:01SPEAKER_08: Uh huge hoot hoot out over here.
- 2:04SPEAKER_08: Um I I I've been a owls fan since birth.
- 2:09SPEAKER_08: My dad was an owls fan, my granddad was an owls fan.
- 2:13SPEAKER_08: Like, we bleed Bookeraton, um, blue, red, and white.
- 2:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, red, white, and blue, baby.
- 2:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's those colors don't run.
- 2:25SPEAKER_04: This NCAA tournament rules, and it rules, especially because Texas is no longer in it.
- 2:30SPEAKER_04: But these final four are it are awesome.
- 2:34SPEAKER_04: I mean, maybe minus UConn because UConn wins all the time.
- 2:37SPEAKER_06: Well, they've been up and down though, right?
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: Well, 2014, right?
- 2:42SPEAKER_06: My high-pitched voice, that was my questioning your statement there.
- 2:47SPEAKER_04: You were stunned by that statement right there.
- 2:50SPEAKER_08: I just like uh as an avid huskies hater, world famous, yeah.
- 2:54SPEAKER_08: Like, uh maybe maybe that's just my bias coming out against the Huskies.
- 2:58SPEAKER_08: Like, as an Owl guy, we despise the Huskies, yeah.
- 3:02SPEAKER_04: Of course.
- 3:02SPEAKER_04: Uh longtime rival of Yukon, FAU.
- 3:05SPEAKER_04: Uh no, man.
- 3:07SPEAKER_04: I mean, this is a fun group.
- 3:09SPEAKER_04: FAU, uh, San Diego State, uh, the Miami Hurricanes, and the Yukon Huskies.
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: Um, obviously, FAU stand account here, but overall, this tournament has been fantastic.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: It's been really fun.
- 3:25SPEAKER_04: A lot of uh just wild outcomes.
- 3:29SPEAKER_04: Your your first Final Four without a one, two, or three seed.
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: Um, I'm really enjoying this.
- 3:34SPEAKER_06: Is that ever?
- 3:35SPEAKER_06: Yeah, ever.
- 3:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there has not been a Final Four that is not at a one, two, or three seed until this year.
- 3:42SPEAKER_04: Um, and Texas Tech is not in it, but this is fun.
- 3:47SPEAKER_04: It's fun.
- 3:48SPEAKER_04: I'm glad this is the outcome, and we're not just getting blue bloods in the final four.
- 3:52SPEAKER_08: I feel like this is what college sports are all about, dude.
- 3:54SPEAKER_08: Like, that's the beauty of March Madness is you have a a plucky underdog like my FAU owls, um, just reaching for the stars to to win it big in Houston.
- 4:06SPEAKER_08: All right, how bad did Houston blow it to not be able to like they blew it hold it down in their home city?
- 4:10SPEAKER_04: They blew it big time because they got absolutely rocked by Miami.
- 4:14SPEAKER_04: Like Miami handled the Cougs, it wasn't even close.
- 4:18SPEAKER_04: So, yeah, the Couggs, after being number one all year, this it, I mean, people are comparing them to Gonzaga, which I get it because you don't play anybody, you know, you're highly regarded as a program, but yet you know you have this insane record, but you know, you don't play anybody, you're not gonna tested shockers, sir.
- 4:37SPEAKER_04: That that's true, they do have to go through the shockers and uh the UCF golden nights, yes.
- 4:43SPEAKER_04: Um, but no, I mean they they got exposed and Gonzaga got exposed as well.
- 4:49SPEAKER_04: So this is, I mean, I don't know.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: I I I I hate it.
- 4:54SPEAKER_04: Uh for Houston, I think they're gonna get better as they move to the Big 12, and they're actually gonna be tested throughout the season um a little more, especially in the Big 12, toughest conference in America.
- 5:07SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, you know, Houston blew it.
- 5:11SPEAKER_08: How many people are like turn turning into this podcast right now, going, I thought this was a Texas Tech podcast.
- 5:19SPEAKER_08: We have changed it, we have submitted the rights to uh to become the first podcast for the Florida Atlantic Owls.
- 5:28SPEAKER_08: There it is.
- 5:28SPEAKER_04: Look, look it up right now.
- 5:30SPEAKER_04: There's no Florida Atlantic podcast, so we're claiming it right here.
- 5:33SPEAKER_07: This we know of if y'all know anyone out there to partner with, we're in.
- 5:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but yeah, let us know.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: Any any owlries out there that want to partner with.
- 5:41SPEAKER_08: Is that what it would be called?
- 5:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that's all right.
- 5:43SPEAKER_08: I think it would just be called a roost.
- 5:45SPEAKER_08: Got any owl roosts?
- 5:46SPEAKER_04: A roost, like yeah, because you know a bird's roost.
- 5:49SPEAKER_04: I think an owlery is a thing.
- 5:51SPEAKER_08: No, I don't think so, man.
- 5:52SPEAKER_08: I think that's I think you're thinking of an aviary.
- 5:54SPEAKER_08: It's a bird, dude.
- 5:55SPEAKER_08: Like it's just because it's an owl.
- 5:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, an aviary is a thing, but I feel like an owlery.
- 6:01SPEAKER_04: Hold on.
- 6:01SPEAKER_07: All right, we have the technology.
- 6:03SPEAKER_07: Jamie, can you pull that up?
- 6:06SPEAKER_04: Owlery.
- 6:07SPEAKER_04: Oh shoot, it took me the Harry Potter fandom.
- 6:12SPEAKER_07: Are you telling me that Owlry is like a fan page?
- 6:16SPEAKER_07: That's like an Allery page.
- 6:19SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's okay.
- 6:20SPEAKER_04: Now I get it.
- 6:21SPEAKER_04: What is it?
- 6:22SPEAKER_04: An Allery was a room on the top of the Hogwarts West Tower.
- 6:27SPEAKER_07: Steven.
- 6:28SPEAKER_07: Oh my god.
- 6:30SPEAKER_04: Where the school owls belong to the and that belong to the students live during the school years.
- 6:35SPEAKER_04: So an Allery is a thing in the Harry Potter universe.
- 6:39SPEAKER_07: And then in the in the in the my god.
- 6:41SPEAKER_07: All right, as a proud pro as a proud descendant of Professor McGonagall, I have to say.
- 6:46SPEAKER_04: There you go.
- 6:47SPEAKER_04: A lot of Harry Potters.
- 6:50SPEAKER_08: Look, I since you know, I I've given FAU a lot of money and skip dedicated a lot of years of my life to them.
- 6:56SPEAKER_08: I I have to say, I have to criticize owls?
- 7:01SPEAKER_06: Owls.
- 7:02SPEAKER_06: What's wrong with that?
- 7:03SPEAKER_06: We're in South Florida.
- 7:05SPEAKER_06: We're going with the owls?
- 7:07SPEAKER_06: We're going with owls.
- 7:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you think Boca Ratone, you don't really think of owls.
- 7:11SPEAKER_04: I um I don't know.
- 7:13SPEAKER_04: I you know, do all mascots have to be like, I I guess I guess it makes it makes sense if your mascot, you know, would be like local or something like a local animal or something like that.
- 7:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, I don't think unless Boca Raton is known for their owls, which I don't think they are.
- 7:33SPEAKER_08: Some of you might be making me look foolish and be like, you know, the the the world famous Boca Raton owl, you know.
- 7:39SPEAKER_08: But you know, what they want with like the FAU geriatrics, you know, it's a big retirement community, like and you kind of like an A like an angry grandma on the logo.
- 7:47SPEAKER_08: I mean, that would kind of rule.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, okay.
- 7:50SPEAKER_04: What kind of rule?
- 7:51SPEAKER_04: We'll put in that change, we'll write the letter to him.
- 7:53SPEAKER_04: Uh let's bring this back around because there is a similarity from FAU and Texas Tech, and that is the famous, unbelievable freshman sensation at Texas Tech now with the FAU owls.
- 8:10SPEAKER_04: Vlad Golden.
- 8:12SPEAKER_04: Um Big Vlad.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: I miss him.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: I always believed in him.
- 8:16SPEAKER_04: The Golden Russian the Golden The Golden Russian.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: I think we called him the the Russian bear at one point.
- 8:22SPEAKER_04: Yes, we did.
- 8:23SPEAKER_04: Um it hurts because there were like eight former Red Raiders in the NCAA tournament, and there were no current Red Raiders in the NCAA tournament this year.
- 8:35SPEAKER_04: But I feel good for Vlad.
- 8:37SPEAKER_04: I'm glad he's doing well.
- 8:38SPEAKER_04: He's getting some like big time recognition here.
- 8:41SPEAKER_04: I think he was like the West Region all-conference, you know, player or whatever.
- 8:46SPEAKER_04: Um, it sucks.
- 8:49SPEAKER_04: It sucks seeing former players do so well when you could have very easily kept these guys, and uh, you know, it was kind of bittersweet just watching Vlad kill it.
- 9:00SPEAKER_08: Well, Vlad obviously knew he had an in.
- 9:02SPEAKER_08: He was like, I know big things are coming in uh FAU, so now he can't be so mad at him.
- 9:07SPEAKER_08: You know, he's he's going in and doing that final four thing.
- 9:09SPEAKER_08: But Steven, I'm gonna be honest with you, man.
- 9:11SPEAKER_08: I like completely forgot about him until I saw FAU.
- 9:15SPEAKER_08: I'm not I'm like I'm not gonna lie to you.
- 9:17SPEAKER_08: I'm not gonna see her say that I like my poster of Vladimir Golden is still hanging in my room.
- 9:22SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry, it's Vladislav, not Vladimir.
- 9:27SPEAKER_04: How dare you?
- 9:28SPEAKER_08: That was very uh Western centric of me to just assume it's gonna be Vladimir.
- 9:33SPEAKER_08: I'm that's very I'm sorry about that.
- 9:35SPEAKER_08: My my bad.
- 9:35SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna I'm gonna pay penance to the uh the slav community on that one.
- 9:39SPEAKER_08: I'm sorry.
- 9:40SPEAKER_04: Perfect.
- 9:42SPEAKER_04: They appreciate your apology.
- 9:44SPEAKER_04: Um, but no, I I saw I saw a lot on tech Twitter, um, you know, watching Vlad play, and you and it's easy to compare tall white guys that put on the Red Raider uniform, but I saw a lot of bocho hate going on um in on the Twitter sphere after seeing Vlad Golden go to the Final Four with the FAU Owls.
- 10:05SPEAKER_04: And I, you know, I just think that's a it's unfair, it's a cheap shot.
- 10:10SPEAKER_04: I don't think you should really be going at current players uh just because another tall white guy is successful at another location.
- 10:19SPEAKER_04: So I just didn't I didn't like that.
- 10:21SPEAKER_04: I didn't like the bacho hate.
- 10:23SPEAKER_04: I haven't been the biggest bacho fan, especially towards the end of the year, but I I feel like that was undeserved hate.
- 10:29SPEAKER_08: Well, yeah, I mean, I I think people are just frustrated with the way the season went.
- 10:32SPEAKER_08: I think they're trying to direct you know the anger somewhere, and it's just kind of going to the lightning rod due to height, you know, alone.
- 10:38SPEAKER_08: You know, you put the lightning rod at the highest point of the uh building, and that's what a bocho will do for you.
- 10:43SPEAKER_08: And he's just kind of absorbing all that frustration in that sense that you know you're just comparing two like mind, like build players, once having way more success.
- 10:52SPEAKER_08: But I mean, you have to remember this is at FAU, a storied historic basketball program with all the resources.
- 10:58SPEAKER_08: So just uh kind of think about it that way.
- 11:01SPEAKER_08: Like he's starting five steps ahead of Bachcho in that sense, while Botch is trying to like reclaim um some distance on that.
- 11:06SPEAKER_08: But I mean, I I I think that's all it is.
- 11:09SPEAKER_08: I think it's just people are just frustrated with the way things went, you know, because there's not a whole lot of fun to take for this last season at all.
- 11:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, and there's another frustration too, because there's another guy in the final four right now, uh playing for the Miami Hurricanes that apparently Texas Tech had a great opportunity to get.
- 11:25SPEAKER_04: And uh, according to Chris Level on the locked on Texas Tech podcast, uh basically kind of said that Texas Tech passed on him when he wanted to come in.
- 11:36SPEAKER_04: And that's uh that's uh Norchad O'Mir, the starting center for the Miami Hurricanes.
- 11:42SPEAKER_04: Um, he's played his butt off.
- 11:44SPEAKER_04: He was absolutely a huge part of that win against Texas and Houston.
- 11:48SPEAKER_04: Um he's he's kind of an undersized big, but he's so freakishly athletic.
- 11:53SPEAKER_04: And I remember seeing him in the offseason and being like, okay, I want this guy.
- 11:58SPEAKER_04: He was at Arkansas State before he transferred to uh to Miami, but he came on a visit uh to Lubbock, apparently really enjoyed himself, and we could have got him, but instead we kind of held out for Fardawz.
- 12:12SPEAKER_04: Dang it.
- 12:12SPEAKER_04: It just, you know, it in hindsight, that really sucks.
- 12:17SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I mean, but in the moment you kind of get it, right?
- 12:19SPEAKER_08: You can't Fardawz was like the dude to get out of the portal, so it's kind of hard to blame the staff on that.
- 12:25SPEAKER_08: Um, but yeah, it does sting, you know.
- 12:27SPEAKER_08: But the thing is, Miami needed him because what Miami went and did was kept UT out of the final four.
- 12:33SPEAKER_08: And for that, we we thank him and the and the good people down in uh Clark Gables.
- 12:38SPEAKER_08: Did I say that right?
- 12:38SPEAKER_08: Coral, coral gables, coral Clark Gables.
- 12:42SPEAKER_04: Not Clark Gable, Clark Gable was like a he was like an actor in like the 40s.
- 12:50SPEAKER_07: Was it named after him?
- 12:52SPEAKER_04: In the Clark Gables of Florida.
- 12:55SPEAKER_07: Was it named after him?
- 12:57SPEAKER_04: No, it's Coral Gables.
- 12:59SPEAKER_07: Like like from SpongeBob?
- 13:04SPEAKER_04: I don't I think that was something else.
- 13:08SPEAKER_04: I think that was the retirement home, wasn't that?
- 13:10SPEAKER_04: Shady?
- 13:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you're right.
- 13:11SPEAKER_04: No, it was Shady Shoals.
- 13:17SPEAKER_04: Coral Gables does seem like something that would be in Spongebob.
- 13:21SPEAKER_04: Spongebob lore.
- 13:22SPEAKER_06: You're well versed.
- 13:25SPEAKER_06: I know my SpongeBob, all right.
- 13:29SPEAKER_08: Oh my god.
- 13:30SPEAKER_08: I bet 80% of listeners have turned off by now, and the other 20 just haven't reached for the phone yet.
- 13:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:37SPEAKER_04: I can't believe you said Clark Gables.
- 13:42SPEAKER_04: That's where Miami is.
- 13:44SPEAKER_04: I was just there.
- 13:45SPEAKER_04: I was in Hawaii.
- 13:46SPEAKER_04: Proper Miami.
- 13:47SPEAKER_08: It's in Clark Gables.
- 13:48SPEAKER_04: I was in Miami.
- 13:49SPEAKER_04: Miami is very nice this time of year.
- 13:53SPEAKER_08: Did you wear some Hawaiians?
- 13:55SPEAKER_04: I yeah, I rocked Hawaiians every single day while I was there.
- 13:58SPEAKER_08: Um the people, not the sandwiches.
- 14:03SPEAKER_08: You ate one cubans.
- 14:05SPEAKER_04: Was it a man or a woman?
- 14:07SPEAKER_04: I I'm not saying on this podcast.
- 14:10SPEAKER_04: Um no, I had uh so it was kind of a last-minute work trip that I had to go down there and um found myself with some free time.
- 14:19SPEAKER_04: And dude, I tell you what, they know how to make a cubano in Little Havana.
- 14:25SPEAKER_04: It was phenomenal with the pickles and everything, the mustard, yeah.
- 14:29SPEAKER_04: Pickles, mustard, and the and the pork, and then uh, oh my god, it was I had to wait like 45 minutes for it, and I tell you what, these people didn't really speak English, so it was kind of hard to press them, you know, of just being like, Hey, I think that's my sandwich right there, and it's just sitting there.
- 14:47SPEAKER_04: No, they haven't called it for 10 minutes, but no, they go back and say, I'm just pretending I can't speak English.
- 14:53SPEAKER_04: They might have been doing that, they might have just been messing with me the whole time.
- 14:56SPEAKER_04: Um, no, but uh no, Miami rules.
- 14:59SPEAKER_04: I will I would definitely go back.
- 15:01SPEAKER_08: My Miami's a pretty cool town.
- 15:02SPEAKER_08: Like I went there and played the University of Miami on the wax grid.
- 15:06SPEAKER_08: And Texas Tech Lax, by the way.
- 15:08SPEAKER_08: Texas Tech Lax, baby.
- 15:10SPEAKER_08: Um, and it's a really cool town.
- 15:12SPEAKER_08: Like, it's like Manhattan on the beach, it's a weird phenomenon.
- 15:15SPEAKER_08: It's cool though.
- 15:16SPEAKER_04: A lot of traffic, but it was great weather when I was there.
- 15:20SPEAKER_04: Um, Miami rules, side note.
- 15:22SPEAKER_08: That's that's talking.
- 15:23SPEAKER_08: It's no Boca Raton, though.
- 15:25SPEAKER_04: It's no Boca Raton.
- 15:27SPEAKER_04: Uh, I've never been to Boca Raton.
- 15:29SPEAKER_04: Can't say.
- 15:29SPEAKER_08: Is it Raton?
- 15:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Boca Raton.
- 15:32SPEAKER_08: Is that Raton?
- 15:33SPEAKER_04: I don't think so.
- 15:34SPEAKER_08: Okay, all right.
- 15:35SPEAKER_08: We have another Clark Gables debate here.
- 15:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I would trust me versus the guy who thinks it's Clark Gables.
- 15:41SPEAKER_04: Um Texas Tech, right?
- 15:45SPEAKER_04: That's what that's what we're here for.
- 15:47SPEAKER_04: That's where we graduated from.
- 15:49SPEAKER_04: Um there's a basketball coach in the works here.
- 15:54SPEAKER_04: Um, everybody's saying it.
- 15:56SPEAKER_04: All signs are pointing towards it.
- 15:57SPEAKER_04: Brayden McCasslin, the current North Texas head coach, um, everything is pointing towards he's gonna be your new head coach.
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: Um how do you feel?
- 16:08SPEAKER_04: How do you feel about this?
- 16:09SPEAKER_04: Uh, it could be announced as soon as probably Wednesday.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: North Texas plays on Tuesday in the NIT Final Four against Wisconsin.
- 16:18SPEAKER_04: Uh, and then the championship game, if they were to win, that is on Thursday.
- 16:21SPEAKER_04: So I don't imagine they're gonna announce it until after North Texas finishes playing.
- 16:26SPEAKER_04: But what are your kind of your thoughts on on Grand McCastle and potentially being the Texas tech head coach?
- 16:31SPEAKER_08: Dude, I mean, I feel like he's been the guy this whole time.
- 16:34SPEAKER_08: You know, I feel like I I I kind of made a joke on Twitter.
- 16:36SPEAKER_08: Like, I just followed his account and being like, Yeah, we know what's happening here.
- 16:40SPEAKER_08: And um, and it's been that I feel like this has been destiny since it's happened.
- 16:44SPEAKER_08: And the like, like it was mentioned before, he was supposedly a guy in the running whenever we were whenever we hired Beard instead.
- 16:51SPEAKER_08: So the kid the bridge has already been built.
- 16:53SPEAKER_08: So I'm sure it was a quick DM.
- 16:54SPEAKER_08: I'm sure they they did these things happen over Instagram.
- 16:57SPEAKER_08: Um, so I bet I bet it was like pretty snappy.
- 17:00SPEAKER_08: So, but dude, I'm pretty excited about it.
- 17:02SPEAKER_08: I mean, you I feel like more Red Raider fans were watching the game against um who are they playing again?
- 17:09SPEAKER_04: Who was that uh the other night?
- 17:13SPEAKER_04: Who did they put it?
- 17:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:15SPEAKER_04: I know you're talking about the NIT game.
- 17:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the NIT, yeah, yeah.
- 17:18SPEAKER_07: Everyone, yeah.
- 17:19SPEAKER_04: The most the most Red Raiders to watch the NIT was right after that rumor popped up that that uh McCasslin was going to be named the new coach.
- 17:27SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 17:29SPEAKER_08: But and what, dude, and I think whenever I watch that game, I'm sure a lot of people are feeling the same way that like watching it makes you more excited about it.
- 17:36SPEAKER_08: Like he looks really fired up on the sidelines, yeah.
- 17:39SPEAKER_08: Like he looks like he's like super proud of his players and really happy to be where he's at.
- 17:43SPEAKER_08: It looks like he really loves what he does and has a lot of energy and passion for uh being on the court, and that's something I keep get behind.
- 17:49SPEAKER_08: And I think that's a good fuel for, say, the Raider Riot.
- 17:51SPEAKER_08: I mean, uh, we had a pretty quiet and contained guy last go around, but I mean we were winning enough games where it didn't really matter.
- 17:56SPEAKER_08: But like having a guy that kind of sells it and like acts like he's a part of it, it's fun for me.
- 18:01SPEAKER_08: I don't know about you, I don't know maybe maybe uh most people are just like res uh results only, um which he has, but like I think he's just he'd be a great ambassador, and he's on the Scott Drew tree.
- 18:12SPEAKER_08: And how much better of a pedigree is that right now, not just in terms of results, but also character.
- 18:17SPEAKER_08: I mean, Scott Drew just seems like an outstanding guy, and Jeremy Tang seems like an outstanding guy.
- 18:23SPEAKER_08: Jerome, um Jerome, so I'm gonna just butcher he's like he's he lives down in in uh uh Clark Gables, and um I knew as soon as I said, I was like, it's probably Jerome.
- 18:35SPEAKER_08: But like, yeah, this like spectacular tree of awesome dudes and really great basketball coaches, and how can you not want that?
- 18:42SPEAKER_08: I mean, if K-State's any indication of uh hiring an assistant, then sign me up.
- 18:47SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah, and then speaking of K-State too, before they hired Jerome Tang, uh apparently McCaslin was up for that job as well, and he was up for the job uh at OU before Porter Mosier eventually got it.
- 19:00SPEAKER_04: So it's not like he hasn't been, you know, in the mix here, not just with Texas Tech, but with other Big 12 and high profile programs.
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: So um the first thing that pops out about him is that he wins, he wins everywhere.
- 19:13SPEAKER_04: Um, it's not just at North Texas, which by the way was a historically bad basketball program before he got there.
- 19:21SPEAKER_04: And the last six years he's been there, they've won 20 games, five out of those six seasons, which is uh insane for a program like North Texas that does not have any sort of historical history of being good at basketball.
- 19:37SPEAKER_04: So um he's made an NCAA tournament with that program.
- 19:41SPEAKER_04: Um, before that, he was at D2 Midwestern State, and he had a 56 and 12 record there.
- 19:48SPEAKER_04: So the guy wins every single place he goes.
- 19:52SPEAKER_04: And I and these are not like easy jobs that he's taken on.
- 19:57SPEAKER_04: So I think that transitions very well to a school like Texas Tech.
- 20:03SPEAKER_04: And yes, obviously, like going from North Texas to Texas Tech is a huge jump.
- 20:08SPEAKER_04: You're going from you know a G5 conference to a the best conference in college basketball.
- 20:14SPEAKER_04: Um, but you mentioned it, he's got the Baylor connections, he's got the Texas connections.
- 20:19SPEAKER_04: Uh, the recruiting, I think, is going to be fine.
- 20:22SPEAKER_04: I don't know how it's going to be how it's going to translate necessarily, but you know, we've seen from this NCA tournament to past NCA tournaments and just talking about Big 12 play in general, uh, it's not necessarily the five-star guys that get you there.
- 20:37SPEAKER_04: It's tough for a for a freshman, for a one and done to get on the floor consistently for a Big 12 team.
- 20:43SPEAKER_04: You don't get a Grady Dick or a Keontae George all the time, you don't win the Big 12 without experience.
- 20:49SPEAKER_04: And so what I think he can do is bring in the right people and bring in the players that have that experience, potentially that have NCA tournament experience to Texas Tech, uh, to be a really good coach for us.
- 21:03SPEAKER_04: So uh I'm excited.
- 21:05SPEAKER_04: If if this does ultimately come true, which everything all signs are pointing towards it, I would be thrilled to have him at uh at Texas Tech.
- 21:13SPEAKER_08: Let's talk about players then, man.
- 21:14SPEAKER_08: Like, I I think something that stands out to me whenever we were, you know, doing our live chat during the UNT game.
- 21:19SPEAKER_08: We were gonna say that this is a UNT podcast now, but is are we owls or mean green?
- 21:24SPEAKER_08: Like it's both birds.
- 21:25SPEAKER_08: Well, mean green's more conceptual, it's more of like an it's you know, we're we're talking abstract here, angry abstract color.
- 21:33SPEAKER_04: It's it's an eagle, it's an eagle versus an owl, which I mean, you know I know, but it's it's it's still just it's still next.
- 21:40SPEAKER_08: You're all right, you're right.
- 21:40SPEAKER_08: Well, we'll leave it there.
- 21:41SPEAKER_08: We I don't want to get too into the deep into the abstracts here, but angry green.
- 21:45SPEAKER_04: We'll do that, we'll do that when only baseball's going on.
- 21:48SPEAKER_08: Yeah, well.
- 21:50SPEAKER_08: So um it whenever we're watching that game, I think uh you and you I remember you specifically saying, like, you know, I was like, Yes, I'll take that point guard, please.
- 21:58SPEAKER_08: Peary, who's obviously like Their their star player, and but you're like, I would take literally any of these players.
- 22:04SPEAKER_08: I don't know if those so much like oh, I love McCastlin, or like legitimately, you would take any of those guys onto a Texas Tech team and showing like the lever level of player he can bring into a North Texas, which, like he touched on, there's nothing there resource-wise that can like really compare to a competitive program.
- 22:21SPEAKER_08: I mean, and they're in conference to a say a very bad basketball conference.
- 22:25SPEAKER_08: Um, and I mean UNT is not exactly bottom of the barrel when it comes to G5 resources in Texas, but it's not the top by any means.
- 22:31SPEAKER_08: So um it's uh do you all do you honestly mean that?
- 22:34SPEAKER_08: Like if he gets those kinds of players at UNT that you're you're you're definitely feeling pretty good at Texas Tech.
- 22:41SPEAKER_04: I I think if you can get players that play as hard as those guys did in you know a sweet 16 NIT game, I think it's special.
- 22:49SPEAKER_04: Uh and that's to coaching, that's to the culture that he's built over there, um, and everything of that nature.
- 22:56SPEAKER_04: I think he's got some talent over there, obviously.
- 22:58SPEAKER_04: They won whatever 23, 24 games this year.
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: So you got to have some guys.
- 23:03SPEAKER_04: Uh that guy, Tyler Perry, is really, really good, and not Medea Tyler Perry.
- 23:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 23:08SPEAKER_04: This is another this is an O in Tyler Perry.
- 23:12SPEAKER_04: Um, not he goes with.
- 23:14SPEAKER_04: No, he's like a 5'10 point guard, but dude's a bucket, and he can run your he can run your offense really well.
- 23:20SPEAKER_04: We you know, size does does not matter.
- 23:23SPEAKER_04: We just saw that with Marquise Noel uh over there leading K-State uh on a great tournament run.
- 23:28SPEAKER_04: That guy's five foot eight on a good day.
- 23:31SPEAKER_04: So the talent is there for that kid, and I love him to be um you know a red raider next year if it potentially if uh McCastlin brings him over.
- 23:40SPEAKER_04: There's another couple players on that team I would love to have.
- 23:42SPEAKER_04: Uh they have a big guy that's pretty strong rebounder.
- 23:45SPEAKER_04: Uh, not sure how he would hold up in the Big 12, but I think he would be, you know, a good guy off the bench.
- 23:50SPEAKER_04: And they they have some wings and some guards that are really solid, and I think could carve out a role for you.
- 23:56SPEAKER_04: So um, you know, I just potentially if McCastlin does uh ultimately get hired, um, you know, I would I would look for some of his mean green players to come with him.
- 24:05SPEAKER_08: How do you feel about like his chances of keeping our dudes around?
- 24:08SPEAKER_08: I mean, you already already have some guys, you know, are obviously bouncing to the portal.
- 24:13SPEAKER_08: I'm sure you're meaning to touch on them in a bit.
- 24:15SPEAKER_08: Yeah, but um what about the guys that seem pretty committed to remaining if the situation stays right?
- 24:21SPEAKER_08: You know, I'm talking about like Jalen, I'm talking about Pop, I'm talking about um anybody else that's kind of in that uh swirl of dudes that are thinking that maybe they can stay around and and keep a good vibe going.
- 24:31SPEAKER_08: But uh, do you think a guy like Miss Kevin Castle can keep that ship together?
- 24:35SPEAKER_08: You think I I because if I you want me to give my answer first, I'm gonna go with yes, because he does seem like a very family-oriented guy, and I think that he brings that into a locker room.
- 24:44SPEAKER_08: I don't mean that in the sense of like, oh, we're all a family here, man.
- 24:47SPEAKER_08: That's we're just you know, kind of like generic coaching.
- 24:50SPEAKER_08: Yeah, family, family.
- 24:53SPEAKER_08: But what I mean is like what I mean is that if you're watching the UT game, like his family was literally there on the sideline, like going crazy with him, and he it seemed like they were all kind of mixed in with each other.
- 25:05SPEAKER_08: I I feel like he's just a very personal guy, a very hard on a sleeve guy from at least when it shows.
- 25:10SPEAKER_08: So maybe he could, you know, rope that rope that into him because I bet Mark Adams was more of like a uh a tough love dude at the end of the day, while this guy's probably more of a um warm embrace kind of dude.
- 25:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean it it's it it's tough for us to say, you know, what those guys are gonna think about Coach McCasslin.
- 25:31SPEAKER_04: I I don't know if he's already tried to reach out because he's you know, you never know what's going on behind the scenes, really.
- 25:36SPEAKER_04: But um what I will say is that guys like Pop, guys like Tyson, guys like Lamar Washington, those players that haven't entered the transfer portal when they absolutely could have by now.
- 25:49SPEAKER_08: And they had been excused of doing so.
- 25:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and they they very much could have entered the transfer portal already, so that tells me that they at least would like to stay here under the right guy.
- 26:01SPEAKER_04: Now, you know, McCastlin's offenses are very slow.
- 26:04SPEAKER_04: He runs a defensive-oriented um kind of basketball that he likes to play.
- 26:10SPEAKER_04: A lot of Chris Beard, a lot of Mark Adams, you know.
- 26:12SPEAKER_04: Um, you're gonna see a very similar style, slower paced, um, that type of thing.
- 26:18SPEAKER_04: Um, I think it's less about McCastlin and more about the assistance that he brings in.
- 26:23SPEAKER_04: Um there's been rumors that Barrett Peary could potentially uh return to Texas Tech in an assistant.
- 26:30SPEAKER_08: Is that just Twitter talk?
- 26:32SPEAKER_04: No, that's like there's legitimately there were like Barrett Peary for head coach sort of popping around.
- 26:39SPEAKER_04: So, I mean, you know, I again I'm not a part of the committee.
- 26:43SPEAKER_04: I don't know what's going on, but if we could get a guy like Barrett Peary or an Al Pinkins to return or a Corey Williams to return, um, that's an automatic plus for the current players that you have because those are the guys that recruited him.
- 26:56SPEAKER_04: I mean, Barrett Peary got Pop Isaacs here, you know.
- 26:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so it's it's a matter of your assistance, it uh how you mesh with these types of guys when you first meet them.
- 27:08SPEAKER_04: I don't know if he has any prior connections, if he tried to recruit Tyson in the past.
- 27:12SPEAKER_04: I mean, obviously him being uh at UNT for all these years and Tyson coming from the DFW area, you know, I'm sure they ran into each other before.
- 27:20SPEAKER_04: So it's uh you know, but really the the thing I want to say here when it comes to transfers and the portal and everything like that with the new coach, it's not the end all be all if you lose these guys.
- 27:36SPEAKER_04: Like obviously you want to keep a guy like Pop Isaacs, obviously you want to keep a guy like Jalen Tyson on your team and to build your program up and to you know have some continuity uh with your program, but it's not like McCasslin won't find other guys, you know.
- 27:54SPEAKER_04: So I'm not trying to say this as like a preemptive, like, oh, of course they're gonna enter the transfer portal, like any of that.
- 28:02SPEAKER_04: But it's also not like the biggest thing in the world that these guys do end up going to the transfer portal or end up actually transferring somewhere because a lot of what these guys, Robert Jennings, Elijah Fisher, both guys, both younger players that have entered the transfer portal, have said in their statements, I am thinking about returning to Texas Tech, you know, but I am looking at all my options.
- 28:21SPEAKER_04: And so to me, it's like they want to come back, but it's also if they do go.
- 28:29SPEAKER_04: The good part about the transfer portal is that you have so many options of guys that have entered.
- 28:35SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's a ridiculous number of players that have entered their name in the transfer portal.
- 28:39SPEAKER_04: You can find guys to play, and you can maybe find guys that fit McCasslin's system better.
- 28:45SPEAKER_04: But again, there's so many different factors that are playing in here.
- 28:47SPEAKER_04: It's it's assistance that he brings in, it's how he connects with the players, it's the offers that these players are receiving NIL and playing time-wise.
- 28:56SPEAKER_04: So, you know, it's it's a really tough question.
- 29:00SPEAKER_08: Yeah, uh, I I think I agree with all that.
- 29:02SPEAKER_08: And the thing I'm like fully on board with the idea that, you know, you don't let the players decide who the coach is, especially in a sport like college basketball, where they they could be gone next season, you know, even if they stay.
- 29:14SPEAKER_08: You know, they might end up transferring, they might go to the NBA.
- 29:16SPEAKER_08: You know, anything can happen.
- 29:17SPEAKER_08: It's just this sport is way too fluid, especially now, to base the future of the program on the guys that are there right now for you know a few more years at most.
- 29:29SPEAKER_08: So I I'm I I'm with you, man.
- 29:31SPEAKER_08: I I I just I would really I think I think we just kind of you know really glue ourselves to guys like Jalen and Pop because we know we really like them as guys, really like them as players, and obviously super talented and they can win a lot of basketball games if given the right uh chance.
- 29:43SPEAKER_08: Um, but like you said, dude, like these guys, these guys are hired to be able to make it happen no matter the circumstances.
- 29:50SPEAKER_08: So um I I I feel the same way.
- 29:53SPEAKER_08: So I I I think we just gotta make the right decision on who you're gonna hire, whether it's McCastle or someone else.
- 29:58SPEAKER_08: I just hope that it's gonna be the guy that's gonna give you a foundation for you know, hopefully a decade or so.
- 30:03SPEAKER_08: You know, you're you want you want a guy that's gonna be here a while, right?
- 30:06SPEAKER_08: Maybe even more.
- 30:06SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 30:07SPEAKER_08: So um, especially with all the turmoil and all the turnover we've had in the in this program lately.
- 30:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, my my mentality with how we proceed with the transfer portal and everything and bringing in the new coach is I'm expecting everybody to go to the transfer portal.
- 30:22SPEAKER_04: Now, I'm not saying that's gonna happen, I'm just expecting it.
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: So I'm pleasantly surprised when somebody decides to stay, or you get a situation where Tyson like automatically backs McCastlan and everything like that.
- 30:34SPEAKER_04: So I'm not gonna be upset because I'm expecting it to happen, but you know, that just might be my way of going at it.
- 30:41SPEAKER_04: Right now, you have four guys in the portal, uh Elijah Fisher and Robert Jennings, the two young guys, uh KJ Allen and Fardawz.
- 30:49SPEAKER_04: Um, I think we can all expect Fardawz not to come back.
- 30:52SPEAKER_04: Um, I think that's you know imminent.
- 30:54SPEAKER_04: Um, KJ Allen, I I I don't expect him back.
- 30:58SPEAKER_04: I don't expect him to land with a power five program, to be honest.
- 31:02SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't think he's necessarily the type of player that belongs uh in a power conference, and that's not necessarily a uh slight to KJ, it's just a uh it's kind of a reality.
- 31:15SPEAKER_04: Sometimes you get guys that he's he's in a weird tweener position, you know, he's like six five, but he's a big guy, and it's like that doesn't always work out.
- 31:23SPEAKER_04: Um, it can work out at a smaller level, he can go back potentially even to like the Pac-12, maybe, and be a bench guy at like a cow or like something like that.
- 31:33SPEAKER_04: But you know, I I wouldn't expect KJ Allen to be back, and that doesn't that doesn't affect me really.
- 31:40SPEAKER_04: Uh love KJ, love what he brought to tech.
- 31:42SPEAKER_04: Uh he was a hustle guy, energy guy.
- 31:44SPEAKER_04: You know, I have no bad things to say about him, but it's not a loss, right?
- 31:49SPEAKER_04: Um uh I would love to get Robert Jennings and Elijah Fisher back.
- 31:53SPEAKER_04: I think both those guys are very talented, they're young, they showed a lot of promise, they progressed as the season went on, and um, you know, I think they would be great pieces for next year's team.
- 32:04SPEAKER_04: And so um, I think everybody wants those guys back, and even you know, guys like Lamar and and uh Pop and those guys.
- 32:12SPEAKER_04: I I like I we would all love to have those young players that showed a lot of promise back.
- 32:16SPEAKER_08: Absolutely, dude.
- 32:18SPEAKER_08: Um I I think I think it sounds like we're it sounds like this episode right now is that we actually hired him, you know.
- 32:24SPEAKER_08: That's it's kind of funny like that.
- 32:25SPEAKER_04: But uh it's there's no matter what, we're having a new coach and he's gonna have to do this.
- 32:29SPEAKER_08: So yeah, exactly, right?
- 32:30SPEAKER_08: That's kind of like uh insert any coach name into this into this category.
- 32:35SPEAKER_08: Um, but I before we even hopped on the pod, and you know, I were you and I were talking about it like about the McCastled situation.
- 32:41SPEAKER_08: You you said that as soon as in NIT's knocked out, you think like within the next 48 hours he is at Texas Tech.
- 32:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think it's gone too long.
- 32:50SPEAKER_04: I think you could have had uh a couple different names that if you wanted to get them, you could have had them by now and had a jump start.
- 32:58SPEAKER_04: Um, I was really interested in the James Parega rumor.
- 33:02SPEAKER_04: Uh, I thought he would have been a wild card that could have potentially been a really, really good hire.
- 33:08SPEAKER_04: He's a great basketball mind.
- 33:09SPEAKER_04: Uh, obviously spent a lot of years with uh under Coach Pop with the Spurs.
- 33:14SPEAKER_04: Um, NBA, NBA guy, longtime NBA guy, hasn't really been in the college game, which is obviously would be concerning.
- 33:21SPEAKER_04: But you know, it's it's an attractive uh experience for a high-level recruit.
- 33:27SPEAKER_04: Um, I just think he's so and you're a Spurs guy.
- 33:30SPEAKER_04: I am a Spurs guy, and that should be noted, but um, I do think he's known in NBA circles as a high-level NBA mind, basketball mind.
- 33:40SPEAKER_04: And it didn't work out in Charlotte, but nobody works out in Charlotte, so that's not that's not his fault.
- 33:46SPEAKER_04: Go look at longtime Hornets history.
- 33:49SPEAKER_04: They are uh they are a poverty franchise, so it's it's really difficult to win in Charlotte.
- 33:58SPEAKER_04: Um, from when they were the Hornets in the 90s to now.
- 34:01SPEAKER_04: Uh they just constantly are terrible.
- 34:04SPEAKER_04: Um, James Morego interested me.
- 34:06SPEAKER_04: Uh, I thought the St.
- 34:08SPEAKER_04: Mary's guy interested me, but that guy has been at St.
- 34:10SPEAKER_04: Mary's for like the last 20 years, and I don't know why he would bounce now.
- 34:14SPEAKER_04: Um, for even if it is Texas Tech, it's a great job, but uh and a much better job than St.
- 34:19SPEAKER_04: Mary's.
- 34:20SPEAKER_04: But you know, you get a guy that's been there for 20 years, he probably doesn't want to go anywhere else.
- 34:24SPEAKER_04: The Rick Patino stuff was always bullshit, like you know, and so uh the only other guy that I'm really, really, really, really interested in is the guy that's still coaching in the final four, and that's Dusty May, uh, for our Florida Atlantic Owls.
- 34:38SPEAKER_04: Um, our guy.
- 34:40SPEAKER_04: You like I know we were joking and stuff earlier in the pod.
- 34:43SPEAKER_04: That's a that's a tough job.
- 34:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they have never won an NCA tournament game before this year.
- 34:49SPEAKER_04: That's insanity, and he took them to the final four.
- 34:52SPEAKER_04: They have there was an article that came out on Twitter of basically his reaction to taking the Florida Atlantic job of how poor the facilities are, how you know uh the leadership doesn't support the programs, how everything like that.
- 35:08SPEAKER_04: And basically, he was in his mind, it was like uh um, he was going, he was gonna take this job, and this is where his basketball career was gonna go die.
- 35:17SPEAKER_04: Uh wow at FAU.
- 35:20SPEAKER_04: And it was the complete opposite.
- 35:21SPEAKER_04: And for somebody to be this successful at a program like that really shows something.
- 35:26SPEAKER_04: My only thing would be doesn't have a lot of Texas connections, and really, this is kind of a one-time thing.
- 35:32SPEAKER_04: And I'm not saying this is a fluke, I'm not saying this is his one year that he's a good coach, but to do this is extremely impressive, and it would be a guy that I would love to bring in.
- 35:42SPEAKER_08: Look, making the Final Four at any program is impressive, like there's obviously levels to it, and making it as an FAU and don't and and the team they're all going up against San Diego State, another very impressive thing to do there as well.
- 35:55SPEAKER_08: Um, sick mascot, by the way.
- 35:57SPEAKER_08: Aztecs, that rules pretty cool.
- 35:59SPEAKER_08: Um, Craig Colors as well.
- 36:01SPEAKER_08: Um, but no, I'm I'm with you.
- 36:03SPEAKER_08: And the thing is, like, I'm sure Florida Atlantic is like you know, soaking it up now because you know he's hired up.
- 36:08SPEAKER_08: He's someone is gonna call him, drop a bag of cash on his table, and he's gonna take a better job.
- 36:13SPEAKER_08: Um, but you're absolutely hit all the nails on the head, dude.
- 36:16SPEAKER_08: FAU is a like is you know, just because it's kind of borrowed something what you just said is a poverty franchise um in Florida.
- 36:22SPEAKER_08: It really is.
- 36:22SPEAKER_08: Yeah, like you you have you know, you have your levels, you know, you have you have the big three, and then you have uh UCF in kind of its own zone right below, and then you have USF, and then it's who else?
- 36:34SPEAKER_08: Then it's it's Florida Atlantic and Florida International.
- 36:36SPEAKER_08: I guess you may have Florida International beat.
- 36:38SPEAKER_08: It's bad, like you're you're at the very bottom of G of uh FPS.
- 36:42SPEAKER_08: So um that's it's incredibly impressive, and like I said, dude, that guy's gone.
- 36:47SPEAKER_08: He's and he's not going to Texas Tech though.
- 36:49SPEAKER_08: I I I would not feel good about that hire.
- 36:51SPEAKER_08: I feel like it'd be way too impulsive.
- 36:53SPEAKER_08: Um, because mostly because of there's no history of Texas there, and yeah, I know I I'm not saying you necessarily have to be, but you need more on your resume that for me to be like, yes, come on over, like jump uproot your entire life and close coaching zone to West Texas.
- 37:09SPEAKER_08: Um, you have to have some sort of gravity.
- 37:11SPEAKER_08: He doesn't have that gravity yet.
- 37:12SPEAKER_08: Maybe he's like a star in in the making.
- 37:14SPEAKER_08: Um, but like I still be too much of a flight risk, in my opinion.
- 37:18SPEAKER_08: Um, because I I I know I think I think TexTech is one of the best open jobs in the country.
- 37:23SPEAKER_08: I'm absolutely with you.
- 37:24SPEAKER_08: And but you still need a bit of a recruiting boost when you're at Texas Tech.
- 37:28SPEAKER_08: You need a guy that focuses a little harder on recruiting, just because you know we're we're still trying to chip away at that the the uh the the the the idea of what Lubbock Texas and Tex Tech is.
- 37:38SPEAKER_08: Um we're still trying to shatter that.
- 37:40SPEAKER_08: I think we've done a really good job of doing it, but you gotta you need a guy that like maintains that, like to to sit there and uh chip away at that.
- 37:46SPEAKER_08: Um, but well, I mean, just one more thought on like the NBA guy.
- 37:49SPEAKER_08: I know we're kind of backtracking a bit, but I think whenever we're looking at looking at the guys in the NBA, I think it's just exciting to talk about a mind that's at the top of the game, and I think that's always enticing, whether it's at in in the football or basketball or baseball, that's just an exciting thing to talk about.
- 38:04SPEAKER_08: But I think I'm with you.
- 38:05SPEAKER_08: I think I'd be a little concerned about the whole college experience thing at the end of the day.
- 38:08SPEAKER_08: But uh, I probably went a little too long, but you know, this is an owl's podcast, so I have to get my my bid in about those owls.
- 38:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and and I mean one more thing in terms of like how our fans react to this, because um, I think originally when the McCasslin rumor first dropped from Goodman or Rostin or whoever it was, it was kind of an underwhelming uh sort of reaction.
- 38:30SPEAKER_04: And then we watched the NIT game and then everybody was like all in.
- 38:34SPEAKER_04: But there's there's like a stigma with Texas Tech fans that we feel like we have to get somebody that is associated with the university, like with Texas Tech.
- 38:45SPEAKER_04: And I don't think that's true because I think especially the basketball brand, and this is you know, thanks to guys like Chris Beard and guys like Mark Adams and Tubby Smith, especially Tubby Smith, that this basketball program is a national brand now.
- 39:01SPEAKER_04: Like people know who Texas Tech is.
- 39:03SPEAKER_04: Now we're not, you know, we've fallen in football.
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: I think we're getting right back up there with Joey.
- 39:08SPEAKER_04: Uh baseball, we're a national program, but basketball, we made a final four, like we made a championship game.
- 39:15SPEAKER_04: Like people know who we are.
- 39:16SPEAKER_04: We're in the best conference in the in college basketball.
- 39:20SPEAKER_04: So, you know, you don't necessarily have to get somebody that has ties to Texas Tech.
- 39:25SPEAKER_04: Um, so I I don't know.
- 39:27SPEAKER_04: I just have kind of an issue when somebody's like, Yeah, we need a good old boy from West Texas.
- 39:32SPEAKER_04: You think we still feel that way?
- 39:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, a ton of people do.
- 39:36SPEAKER_08: Like, I feel like that's the philosophy of the 2010s, big time.
- 39:39SPEAKER_08: Yeah, like everyone had to be Tim Tadlock.
- 39:42SPEAKER_08: You know, that's like what it had to be.
- 39:44SPEAKER_08: Like, no, we need to go get another Tim Tadlock.
- 39:46SPEAKER_08: When it's like when no one stopped and asked, maybe it's just Tim Tadlock, who's just a really awesome coach, you know, because you know, we went on a tear of hiring nothing but Tex Tech uh affiliated guys.
- 39:57SPEAKER_08: Don't get me wrong, it worked out in a lot of ways.
- 39:59SPEAKER_08: Like Chris Beard, it worked out, it did.
- 40:01SPEAKER_04: Um Mark Adams, it worked, it worked out Mark Adams, it worked out, yeah.
- 40:04SPEAKER_08: Um, but just character flaws, it ended up being their down fall.
- 40:07SPEAKER_08: I mean, which is obvious, which don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to like glaze past, but like with production, like obviously it worked out.
- 40:14SPEAKER_04: Well, I think I also think it got it got ramped up with the Matt Wells thing because you brought in a guy that was not in you know anywhere close to associated with Texas Tech, and he failed miserably at Texas Tech.
- 40:26SPEAKER_04: And uh, you know, people look at that and they just say, Oh, okay, well, you we need a tech guy.
- 40:31SPEAKER_04: And I maybe again, like to your point, maybe that's just Matt Wells was bad at coaching football, yeah, and not necessarily just a guy can't succeed, you know, that isn't from West Texas or has Texas connections.
- 40:43SPEAKER_04: Like, obviously, that's a big plus, but we've seen teams succeed in Texas that don't necessarily have those ties, so you know, I don't think that's the end all be all here, but uh, I don't know, that's just something that bothers me about certain uh red raiders that we feel like we need to get a good old boy um no matter what for any coaching job at Texas Tech.
- 41:05SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I feel you.
- 41:06SPEAKER_08: I've I've I would I I'm kind of gonna just gotta be glued to the whole Joey Maguire approach to things now.
- 41:12SPEAKER_08: Like just I there's there's a there's a formula with Joey Maguire, whenever you hire a Joey Maguire.
- 41:19SPEAKER_08: You know, you're you're hiring a Texas recruiting connection machine and just say an electric factory of a dude.
- 41:27SPEAKER_08: And I think you see that in a castle.
- 41:29SPEAKER_08: I think that's like I think that he he reflects him in basketball form in a lot of ways.
- 41:34SPEAKER_08: And I think you're gonna, I think you're hiring a very family-oriented guy, a Texas-oriented guy, a passionate dude.
- 41:40SPEAKER_08: I think because I think I think a lot of fans said this on Twitter as well that they want the Joe McJuly McGuire for basketball.
- 41:46SPEAKER_08: Yeah, so and I I completely agree.
- 41:48SPEAKER_08: And I I think I think McCastlin's probably the closest thing you can get right now in of the immediate choices.
- 41:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, to that point, I think that there's the the best quality you can have as a head coach in any college sport is your ability to hire coaches.
- 42:03SPEAKER_04: That's your best quality that you can have.
- 42:05SPEAKER_04: You hire recruiters, you hire good people that uh get the right guys in here.
- 42:11SPEAKER_04: And that's what Joey McGuire has done very well.
- 42:13SPEAKER_04: That's what Mike Leach did very well uh at Texas Tech, is he brought in constantly good coordinators and good assistants and good everything.
- 42:21SPEAKER_04: Chris Beard, that's another thing that he does very well.
- 42:24SPEAKER_04: He he brings in great assistants and great recruiters to bring in the type of players that we bring in.
- 42:31SPEAKER_04: So um, you know, that's that's something that McCastlin.
- 42:34SPEAKER_04: I don't know much about the UNT assistants.
- 42:37SPEAKER_04: I don't know if he wants to bring some of those guys with him.
- 42:39SPEAKER_04: I imagine he does to some degree, but I would also love it if he brought in a guy like Barrett Peary or a guy that not necessarily he may not have a connection with, but he those assistants have connections with either current players or players uh or or Texas Tech or something like that that know the culture and know what we're all trying to build here and they all kind of come together as one.
- 43:01SPEAKER_04: So um the assistants I'm gonna be watching big time, uh, if and when um McCaslin is ultimately hired, which I think is gonna happen this week.
- 43:09SPEAKER_04: So um, I don't know, man.
- 43:11SPEAKER_04: Any more thoughts?
- 43:12SPEAKER_08: Uh yeah, I mean, I think that's the only reason why I was like, is the bear period really a real thing?
- 43:16SPEAKER_08: Because you know, ever the one like whenever he wants to, whenever a new coach wants to move in, he probably wants to instill his own guys, and rightfully so.
- 43:22SPEAKER_08: Like he wants to instill his his picks, you know, to make sure to make what his vision work.
- 43:26SPEAKER_08: Uh, you know, I say that, but at the same time, you know, Joey McGuire marched in and it was like, No, we're gonna keep Sonny Cumbie, you know.
- 43:31SPEAKER_08: And so uh, you know, you never know, right?
- 43:33SPEAKER_08: I mean, uh, it's not I guess it's not necessarily the same thing with Barry Piary, but I feel like Barry Peary would absolutely come back.
- 43:38SPEAKER_04: Um, so yeah, man, I don't think he ever wanted to leave.
- 43:41SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 43:41SPEAKER_08: So I I think I think it was uh a a a a budding of personalities, so to say.
- 43:48SPEAKER_08: Um uh yeah, man, I I this actually went a lot longer than I thought about talking about uh the the basketball coaching search with uh I we say coaching search, but talking about the the one prospect we think or is for sure going it's I
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: I'd be like there's like a five percent chance it's not McCastlin.
- 44:04SPEAKER_04: What's Vegas say?
- 44:05SPEAKER_04: Jamie, pull that up.
- 44:06SPEAKER_04: I uh Jamie pull that up.
- 44:08SPEAKER_04: It's saying minus um 10,000 for Castlin.
- 44:13SPEAKER_04: Um all right, man.
- 44:15SPEAKER_04: Uh let's talk women's basketball because very impressive season for Krista Gerlic and the squad.
- 44:22SPEAKER_04: Um they're getting better every single year.
- 44:25SPEAKER_04: Um Brian Berscott, Brynn Gerlich, uh Tatan, Tatum Ventenheimer, like uh Katie Farrell, these are really, really important pieces.
- 44:37SPEAKER_04: And and they fell to Arkansas in the WNIT, the Sweet 16.
- 44:43SPEAKER_04: Um, but man, this was a great season to watch.
- 44:46SPEAKER_04: Um, I caught a lot of the games.
- 44:47SPEAKER_04: This is probably the most Lady Raider basketball I watched in my lifetime was this season, and it was just a really, really fun team.
- 44:54SPEAKER_04: And uh Christa Garlic, you can't say enough about what she's doing um for the program and for bringing in pe the right people and bringing in the right players and um just building up this pro.
- 45:05SPEAKER_04: I mean, this was a team that really had a decent shot at making the NCAA tournament and just fell a little bit short in conference play.
- 45:13SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, the Big 12 is still really good uh in women's basketball.
- 45:17SPEAKER_04: Uh, they're not quite the powerhouse that the men's basketball, you know, Big 12 is, but uh still a very good conference.
- 45:25SPEAKER_04: And um, you know, it's just uh they deserve a lot of praise for what they did this season.
- 45:30SPEAKER_04: And um this program just keeps growing.
- 45:33SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna borrow uh West Virginia uh Mountaineers head coaching Neil Brown legends, who's beloved over there.
- 45:39SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna try, I'm gonna borrow his phrase real quick and say trust the pro trust the climb with with with Krista Gerlic because she is like the picture of trusting the process.
- 45:49SPEAKER_08: I when I remember I remember we hired her a few years ago.
- 45:51SPEAKER_08: I like you and I were together when whenever we she we announced that we hired her.
- 45:55SPEAKER_08: And um I was I felt so good about that hire.
- 45:59SPEAKER_08: I thought that was like the perfect hire for the program, and it's really starting to like really come into shape.
- 46:04SPEAKER_08: I think we're just gonna watch a continue climb in this program.
- 46:06SPEAKER_08: I think she's gonna build like a consistent winner that's putting him back in the tournament all the time, and this season's like indication of it.
- 46:12SPEAKER_08: So I I really love the direction this program has been going in for a while.
- 46:16SPEAKER_08: And I've never I haven't like seen disappointment.
- 46:18SPEAKER_08: Like, I've been like, hey, it's it's just continuing improvement, and that's what you need in our women's basketball program because it's been rough.
- 46:24SPEAKER_08: So it's just to see to see this turnaround has been amazing.
- 46:27SPEAKER_08: I can't wait to see what she does next year as well.
- 46:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the next step is is winning in conference because that was you know, we did a great job in non-con.
- 46:34SPEAKER_04: I didn't think we had a particularly tough non-conference schedule.
- 46:38SPEAKER_04: Uh, that is seems to be the Texas Tech way, um, which is annoying in its own right.
- 46:42SPEAKER_04: But um, no, I I that's the next step is is you know, beating the good team, beating in Iowa State.
- 46:48SPEAKER_04: And I know we beat Texas, I think, once every year the last couple of years, which is great.
- 46:53SPEAKER_04: But you know, you you got to beat your Baylors, you got to beat your uh, and and that's tall task in in women's basketball.
- 47:00SPEAKER_04: So um, but that's the next step, getting getting good people.
- 47:03SPEAKER_04: I think um, you know, players like Bailey Maupin is a star in the making.
- 47:08SPEAKER_04: She already showed so much this season, she's gonna be great uh these next few years, uh, and local 806 represent.
- 47:16SPEAKER_04: Oh so you know, just just great, great stepping stones.
- 47:22SPEAKER_04: Um, you're obviously you're losing a ton of players um from this past season, but um, you know, you're gonna bring new ones in, you're gonna have girls step up that um were coming off the bench, and um, you know, uh like girls like Jasmine Shavers, I think, is gonna be really good in the future.
- 47:38SPEAKER_04: Um, so just just a just an optimistic uh outlook at the women's basketball team here at tech.
- 47:45SPEAKER_08: Yeah, at least we have continuity on one side of the basketball court, you know?
- 47:49SPEAKER_08: Yes, yes.
- 47:50SPEAKER_04: There are no uh personality traits or anything of that nature that are are bad about Krista Gur.
- 47:57SPEAKER_08: Like she really no, not at all, dude.
- 47:59SPEAKER_08: She's a queen.
- 48:00SPEAKER_08: It goes without saying.
- 48:01SPEAKER_08: Like, she the way the the way she phrased like not that long ago.
- 48:04SPEAKER_08: Um, I forget the public reporter that was like was uh asking her, I was like, Are you are you gonna be are you gonna be glittery?
- 48:09SPEAKER_08: She's like, I'm always glittery, baby.
- 48:10SPEAKER_07: I was like, I love I love this queen.
- 48:13SPEAKER_07: She's she's great.
- 48:15SPEAKER_08: Brown bits are fire.
- 48:16SPEAKER_08: I have to say it every time.
- 48:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, she rolls.
- 48:18SPEAKER_04: Krista Girl like rolls.
- 48:20SPEAKER_04: Uh the women's program is absolutely on the up and up.
- 48:23SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 48:24SPEAKER_04: All right, man.
- 48:25SPEAKER_04: You want to talk a little spring ball?
- 48:26SPEAKER_08: Yeah, dude, absolutely.
- 48:28SPEAKER_04: Football, football, football.
- 48:30SPEAKER_08: That's a thing still.
- 48:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, even this summer.
- 48:33SPEAKER_04: That's another program that's on the up and up, by the way.
- 48:35SPEAKER_08: Oh, absolutely.
- 48:36SPEAKER_04: Um, we we should mention, I don't think we mentioned that we retained like all the staff except for Emmett Jones.
- 48:43SPEAKER_04: All the staff is back, which is pretty abnormal.
- 48:48SPEAKER_04: That's not something that happens very often.
- 48:50SPEAKER_04: No, usually you lose a defensive line coach or a wide receivers coach, which you did.
- 48:55SPEAKER_04: You lost one, but everybody else got extended.
- 48:59SPEAKER_04: Everybody else is here.
- 49:01SPEAKER_04: There is so much continuity with this staff and this program right now, and it is rolling, dude.
- 49:08SPEAKER_04: I don't know if I I said this last year that I've never been more hyped for a football season as a Texas Tech fan.
- 49:14SPEAKER_04: This is gonna top that this season, and it starts with Springball.
- 49:17SPEAKER_08: It's crazy, yeah.
- 49:19SPEAKER_04: It's crazy.
- 49:20SPEAKER_08: So, yeah, yeah, because I know every time we talk about like you're not the only one that shares that sentiment.
- 49:25SPEAKER_08: Um that this could seriously be a season that shapes up to where not only could we see ourselves preseason ranked, but we could end the season with 10 wins.
- 49:37SPEAKER_08: And it's like whenever you look at the schedule, you can absolutely see it.
- 49:39SPEAKER_08: I mean, obviously, we'll dive deeper into it once we get closer to the football season, but um, whenever you say this, like all the staff is still there, you have all these returning players, especially really important pieces like quarterbacks and um uh defensive players and other other guys that are just really gonna make that difference uh in the end of the day, and it's just you can really see here and like chuck uh pick out the the the the the check marks on the schedule, which is crazy, which is great, you know.
- 50:02SPEAKER_08: And I would love for this last season for you to you know you to be in the conference for us to go out there and and just wail on them, you know, and have 10 plus wins, and that that'd be spectacular.
- 50:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but um I think you're bringing in better pieces from what you had last season.
- 50:20SPEAKER_04: I think, especially on the O-line, like the O-line I think is gonna be much improved this year.
- 50:24SPEAKER_04: Um, second year under Coach Hamby.
- 50:27SPEAKER_04: Um, I think this has been a real emphasis for Joey to get better because it was brutal, both under Cliff and under Matt Wells.
- 50:35SPEAKER_04: It was just an awful part of your team um that I think he's really improving on.
- 50:41SPEAKER_04: Um, and that starts with guys like transfers like Cole Spencer's gonna be there.
- 50:45SPEAKER_04: Uh Rusty Statz is coming in from uh from Western Kentucky.
- 50:49SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, Zach Kidley knows him very well.
- 50:51SPEAKER_04: He's probably gonna be your starting center.
- 50:53SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, Dennis Woburn is back, Monroe Mills is back, uh Caleb Rogers, I think, is moving to a different position, which will be good for him.
- 51:01SPEAKER_04: Um, so I just think you have some depth and you have some dudes that are gonna be much better than what we were last year, uh, which we all saw was kind of a spot that you really struggled with.
- 51:13SPEAKER_04: And uh if your O-line was just a little bit better, you probably could have won one or two more of those games last year.
- 51:18SPEAKER_08: Yeah, absolutely.
- 51:19SPEAKER_08: I mean, it's kind of been a a pain in the ass for the for the past few uh uh probably a good decade now.
- 51:25SPEAKER_08: So, but hey, hey, uh we we don't make the best uh uh quarterback second run for the last for nothing.
- 51:31SPEAKER_08: So it comes from somewhere.
- 51:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 51:34SPEAKER_04: And in the uh in the initial like uh you know interviews and um press conferences and that kind of stuff with Kidley and DeRuder and Joey and um those guys, they seem pretty hyped up about uh uh Dre McCrae, who's the uh Austin P transfer, the speedy wide receiver.
- 51:52SPEAKER_04: Um, seems like he's gonna be a real dude this year.
- 51:56SPEAKER_04: Um, and the edge rushing.
- 51:57SPEAKER_04: I mean, every every single coach has said something about Steve Linton, the Syracuse transfer, who you don't think of insane football when you think of Syracuse, but maybe he was just in the wrong position and maybe he's just one of those gems that you're finding uh on this Joey Maguire staff here that's gonna be uh you know, a a uh you know a piece that you're not gonna replace Tyree Wilson, but it's a piece that could potentially, you know, take some of that slack along with Miles Cole, who's now in his second year with the program, has all the you know the the length, the height, the speed, the the just the body.
- 52:37SPEAKER_04: He's like 6'6.
- 52:38SPEAKER_04: He's he's almost as big as Tyree.
- 52:41SPEAKER_04: He's just uh you know, he was a little under-recruited, and um he's coming in his second year of the program.
- 52:46SPEAKER_04: I I think the edge rushing is gonna be a real the defensive line in general is just gonna be really solid.
- 52:53SPEAKER_08: Awesome.
- 52:54SPEAKER_08: And I mean, what's speaking of Tyree?
- 52:56SPEAKER_08: He's coach Tyree Wilson.
- 52:58SPEAKER_08: You know this, right?
- 52:58SPEAKER_08: He's coaching Tyree.
- 53:00SPEAKER_04: He's coach Tyree, he's future top 10 pick Tyree.
- 53:04SPEAKER_08: Uh he's he's he can have it all, Tyree.
- 53:07SPEAKER_04: He Tyree have it all, man.
- 53:09SPEAKER_04: That guy, he's healthy, he's gonna participate a little bit in the combine.
- 53:13SPEAKER_04: I think he's just doing the bench press, but uh no man, he's gonna be a top 10 pick.
- 53:19SPEAKER_04: Unreal, unreal.
- 53:21SPEAKER_04: Another defensive first round pick for Texas Tech.
- 53:25SPEAKER_04: You know, typical tech.
- 53:27SPEAKER_04: Typical tech with your with your defensive NFL superstars.
- 53:34SPEAKER_07: Speak out with Zach Thomas, you know.
- 53:36SPEAKER_07: Yeah, really typical tech.
- 53:38SPEAKER_04: Typical tech.
- 53:39SPEAKER_04: Uh, those are just some of the guys that they mentioned in those press conferences.
- 53:43SPEAKER_04: Obviously, you know, hype to see the quarterbacks, uh, see how that whole thing plays out.
- 53:47SPEAKER_04: You know, it's it's kind of Shuck's job to lose, um, which I think we all recognize, and I all do that.
- 53:53SPEAKER_04: They recognize.
- 53:54SPEAKER_04: I mean, Tyler Shuck's just been a leader, if anything.
- 53:58SPEAKER_04: And I mean, obviously, the record speaks for himself.
- 54:00SPEAKER_04: I think he's seven, seven, and one as the Texas Tech starting quarterback.
- 54:04SPEAKER_04: So it's uh it's crazy.
- 54:06SPEAKER_08: Mad decent, mad decent record.
- 54:08SPEAKER_08: And I just like being reminded that we keep kicked the snot out of Ole Miss with him.
- 54:12SPEAKER_08: So um that was that's pretty good feeling.
- 54:15SPEAKER_04: Pretty good feeling.
- 54:15SPEAKER_04: I watched that, I watched those highlights the other day when I was feeling sad.
- 54:19SPEAKER_04: I just turned on some of these old Texas Tech games.
- 54:27SPEAKER_04: So yeah, yeah, we just kicked their butt.
- 54:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, we own the state of Mississippi.
- 54:32SPEAKER_08: We do, we do.
- 54:33SPEAKER_08: I mean, the property value is not great, but we're owned that property.
- 54:36SPEAKER_04: We're looking to sell.
- 54:39SPEAKER_06: I want to say it's a buyer's market in Mississippi.
- 54:45SPEAKER_04: Um, baseball did something this weekend that I'd rather not talk about.
- 54:50SPEAKER_04: You were at one of the games there.
- 54:52SPEAKER_08: Your boy was very sad.
- 54:54SPEAKER_08: Your boy was not having straight up, not having a great time.
- 54:57SPEAKER_08: I mean, tech tech like really rallied, but uh come on, like geez, I wish we all at least got one off.
- 55:04SPEAKER_08: Um, we struggle on the road, it seems.
- 55:07SPEAKER_08: Um, yeah, I don't know what that's about.
- 55:09SPEAKER_04: It's a thing.
- 55:10SPEAKER_04: It's I mean, it's tough.
- 55:11SPEAKER_04: You're you're playing a good Texas team.
- 55:13SPEAKER_04: Texas is good.
- 55:14SPEAKER_04: You are you are.
- 55:15SPEAKER_04: It's you know, it's not necessarily a shame to lose to them.
- 55:18SPEAKER_04: It is a shame to get swept by them.
- 55:19SPEAKER_04: It is, yes.
- 55:20SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, you you hate to see that, but uh, you know, you were missing some players.
- 55:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you're still missing um, you know, some key pieces, either due to suspension in Beckle, one of your better pitchers, and uh Dylan Carter is gonna be out still for a few more weeks after you know busting that hand.
- 55:37SPEAKER_04: So it's uh it sucks.
- 55:39SPEAKER_04: It sucks losing to Texas, it sucks getting swept by Texas.
- 55:43SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't think this really like is an overall you know statement of who you are as a team.
- 55:50SPEAKER_04: You know, you're going into a into a crazy environment, you're uh and and against a very good team.
- 55:55SPEAKER_08: So uh it was a big crowd, dude.
- 55:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm sure it was.
- 55:58SPEAKER_04: And that's on that's on the same day that they're playing an elite eight game.
- 56:02SPEAKER_08: So that just tells you how much Texas cares about basketball, but yeah, yeah, and that I mean you're you're hosting a ranked rival as well on a beautiful weekend, so the weather was perfect.
- 56:11SPEAKER_08: Um uh it was it was a fun time, like overall, but sucked on the field.
- 56:16SPEAKER_08: But hey, all is not lost, like the mission remains the same.
- 56:19SPEAKER_08: We are still ranked, so the ideas of here, I'm looking looking at this.
- 56:23SPEAKER_08: We're ranked between 15 and 22 on all uh on all major uh whatever we want to call them rankers.
- 56:29SPEAKER_08: So if you want to go by D1 baseball, we're number 22.
- 56:32SPEAKER_08: And I think we can live by that.
- 56:33SPEAKER_08: I think I think that's fair, especially after you get swept by an unranked UT team.
- 56:36SPEAKER_08: I think they're unranked in the in the in the game.
- 56:38SPEAKER_08: Um, so I think that's fair.
- 56:40SPEAKER_08: Uh I wouldn't have been surprised if we dropped out.
- 56:42SPEAKER_08: So I'm happy to see us still remain.
- 56:44SPEAKER_08: And like I said, dude, the mission remains the same.
- 56:46SPEAKER_08: I I feel like we just have perhaps too much of a reliance on you know playing in West Texas.
- 56:52SPEAKER_08: Like we know how to we know how to exploit the West Texas wind and all that, but I feel like whenever we hit the road, we kind of we've been laying some dubs, uh duds.
- 57:00SPEAKER_08: So I hope we can turn it around and start, you know, smashing some uh visiting W's off because otherwise, I don't know, I don't know how great our chances look at grabbing a Big 12 trophy and or inevitably a uh postseason berth.
- 57:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, there's so many games in the baseball season that it's you know that one series isn't gonna knock you out, which is a good thing.
- 57:20SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, obviously you're going up against Texas, and Texas now starts three and oh in the Big 12, and you're sitting kind of at uh whatever, two and four now because of the the one loss to Oklahoma State and then the three to UT.
- 57:32SPEAKER_04: So uh you got some ground to make up.
- 57:34SPEAKER_04: Um, you have some good opportunities here.
- 57:36SPEAKER_04: You got TCU this week, um, which is another you know crazy game.
- 57:41SPEAKER_04: Uh TCU is is a tough opponent.
- 57:44SPEAKER_04: Always.
- 57:44SPEAKER_04: Uh and and then I think you have Oklahoma after them, which is another crazy tough opponent.
- 57:50SPEAKER_04: So you know, you're starting off really this Big 12 schedule is really top heavy at the beginning.
- 57:55SPEAKER_04: Um, you're playing all the best teams to start, and then you kind of finish off with your Kansas States, your Baylors, you know, your Kansases, all that.
- 58:02SPEAKER_04: So uh they got a lot of there's a lot of season left.
- 58:06SPEAKER_04: This isn't a a season defining series.
- 58:08SPEAKER_04: It obviously it stinks, but uh you move on and you get better.
- 58:12SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 58:13SPEAKER_08: No, it's still a Tim Tadlock team.
- 58:15SPEAKER_08: This has been the consistently our best program on campus, besides maybe track and field only because they win national championships.
- 58:22SPEAKER_08: Um on campus for the past decade.
- 58:25SPEAKER_08: So I have all the faith in the world, man.
- 58:27SPEAKER_08: I I'm excited to see how they progress forward.
- 58:29SPEAKER_08: Uh bummed that we're not playing in Waco because uh I was gonna hope you'll hopefully catch that one too.
- 58:33SPEAKER_08: But uh, at least we can get maybe get some more W's in the LBK.
- 58:36SPEAKER_08: Any other thoughts on the diamond?
- 58:38SPEAKER_04: Uh no, not really.
- 58:40SPEAKER_04: Uh let's uh we have a younger team, we have some pitchers that are out.
- 58:44SPEAKER_04: Let's get healthy, let's get right.
- 58:45SPEAKER_04: Uh let's get a couple against TCU.
- 58:47SPEAKER_04: Get some diggers.
- 58:48SPEAKER_08: I appreciate that tweet, by the way.
- 58:50SPEAKER_04: You liked it?
- 58:51SPEAKER_04: I liked it.
- 58:51SPEAKER_04: Maybe you'd like it.
- 58:52SPEAKER_04: The Dinger Derby.
- 58:53SPEAKER_04: It was tough, dude.
- 58:54SPEAKER_04: Uh, when when I was clipping that video, you're just like, okay, some of this stuff is a little too much for Twitter.
- 59:01SPEAKER_04: Uh like you can't, he's just he's just throwing epops like crazy.
- 59:06SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 59:07SPEAKER_04: He's making some sexual gestures.
- 59:09SPEAKER_04: Um, if you don't know what we're talking about, go watch Dinger Derby on uh on YouTube.
- 59:13SPEAKER_07: It's a I think you picked the big one.
- 59:15SPEAKER_07: A good one.
- 59:15SPEAKER_07: I think I think C and L Big Boy is a good one.
- 59:18SPEAKER_04: I wanted to get gone forever Aaron Hernandez in there.
- 59:23SPEAKER_04: It was like the two the two little sayings he had between the Aaron Hernandez one was like, oh no, I can't put that one.
- 59:30SPEAKER_07: Can't play that one.
- 59:33SPEAKER_07: C and L Big Boy was a is a good one, though.
- 59:36SPEAKER_04: And then he goes to Kirk Gibson after it's around the bases.
- 59:44SPEAKER_04: All time YouTube video.
- 59:46SPEAKER_04: Please go watch it.
- 59:48SPEAKER_04: Gone forever.
- 59:52SPEAKER_04: Speaking speaking of good, uh still staying on you know the the hitting with bat sports, uh, softball doing very well.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_04: Um, first year under new head coach Craig Snyder.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_04: Um, they deserve a shout out.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_04: I I know they had a rough weekend in Austin as well.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_08: It was rough in in quotation marks, though.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_08: It was number eight Texas, and you lost by one point twice.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was very close.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_04: And I thought the baseball series was also very competitive.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_04: It just was.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_04: It's a it's a it's a good team, good teams.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_04: Yes, there's good stick ball teams.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_04: It's uh it sucks.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_04: You're playing in Austin.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_04: Um, it's the same kind of story, but no, this uh this softball program is doing much better than what they were way better than what I thought they would be doing at this point.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_04: Um, and you still have a lot of Big 12 play left.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_04: You already have like some stupid like 26 wins on the year, which is nuts.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_04: Uh Craig Snyder's killing it.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_08: Yes, he is.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_08: Uh apparently, apparently, if we lost every game from here, we'd still end with uh with a winning record.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_08: And I I'm not I haven't done the research on it, but um, I don't think that happened the past two coaches.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_08: So um I don't think so at all.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_08: I really like this guy.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_08: I think I think he's the right guy for the right job.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_08: I really do.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_08: Um, I think I think Kirby's Kirby just needs two or three chances to finally get it right with these women's sports.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_08: So I think he's finally landed on the dude that's uh the correct pick.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_08: So I like him a lot, dude.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_08: I think he's gonna do really great things, especially on the recruiting trail and uh putting together a solid season for the first time in forever because we have been uh buns at softball.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_04: Absolute buns.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_04: Uh no longer though, because what we do is hit dingers.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_04: I think we're like top five in the nation in hitting home runs.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_04: I'm cool with that.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_04: That's great.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_04: That's fantastic.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_04: We got some girls that can absolutely nail it.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_07: Screw small ball, no, send it, send it.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_04: No, softball rules.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_04: Uh, we're in a good spot in a lot of sports.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_04: Um, no, let's just everything rules.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_04: Basically, everything rules.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_04: Basketball can roll soon.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_04: It will rule soon.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_04: Give us another season, and we're out.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_04: Um, okay.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_04: Couple off-topic things before we get to Song of the Week and Ender Off right here.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_04: I know this has been a longer episode.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_04: Um, okay surprisingly.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_04: I know, right?
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_06: There was nothing that really happens.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_04: FAU happened.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_04: We have a lot to talk about with our owls.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_04: Um, okay.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_04: This is something else that bothers me, and I don't know how you feel about it, but this is off topic.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_08: Where's where is this going?
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_04: No, everybody was rooting for Kansas State, okay, in the in the NCAA tournament.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_04: It was a great story, you know.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_04: Marquise Noel, Jerome Tank, Keonta Johnson, all those guys.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_04: Great story.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_04: As soon as they lose, you get and this isn't just Texas Tech.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_04: This is all I saw with all Big 12 fans.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_04: It's the trust me, I know an emotional loss guy.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_04: Like having somebody that feels the need to tweet out trust me, K-State fans, we've been there before, we feel your pain.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_04: Very sorry for you.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_04: I saw so many of those tweets after K-State loss, and it's just like, guys, just it's not original.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_04: Don't do it, don't tweet that.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_04: They're pissed off, they don't want to see some Texas tech or or friggin' Baylor Bear fan tweeting.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_04: Trust me, guys, I know an emotional loss, and I feel for you.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, this if you want a therapy session right now, you can call me.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_05: Here's my DM, and we can talk about it.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_04: It's like we were all rooting for Tang.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_04: We all love Marquise Noel.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_04: This is such a sad loss.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_04: I feel so bad for you guys.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_04: I was rooting for you the whole time.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_04: It just screams like like doucher from high school, like saying, dude, I just I feel so bad for you.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_04: It's like, dude, they made the freaking elite eight.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_04: They had a great season, they had an awesome season.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_04: Like, you don't need to tweet.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_04: I feel so sorry for you guys.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_04: Like, I have been there before.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_04: You remember 2019 against Virginia?
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_04: I've been in your shoes.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_07: Like, oh my god.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_07: It's like, oh, but we I would we we made it further, but I we would, but I feel your pain.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_07: Like, we obviously we made it to National Championship.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_07: No, like you know, you got illegal.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_07: I don't mean to bring it up.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_07: I'm not trying to make it about me, but you're totally trying to make it about you.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_04: Stop tweeting that.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_04: Stop tweeting emotional support for Kansas State fans.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_07: Love our purple uh purple wheat boys.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_08: Um you had a great season, you had a phenomenal season.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_08: I don't know why any of them would be upset about anything right now.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_04: No, like it sucks.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_04: You lost to Florida Atlantic when you had a great opportunity.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_08: The Florida Atlantic University.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_04: I know, I know.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_04: Tough out, tough out.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_06: What's the seconds?
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_04: Okay, so like I mentioned, I just got back from Miami and I went solo because it was a work trip and it was last minute and everything like that.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_04: Would you ever go on a solo trip?
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_04: Just you.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_04: I thought about this a lot because I was on technically on a solo trip.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_08: Yeah, but it was for business.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_08: That's different.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_08: Like you have to use to do it when you're on business.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_04: It was, but it was like would but I'm saying I had a good time on my off days and just like going and experiencing stuff, but I was solo.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_04: How do you feel like about a solo trip?
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_08: I can't really see myself doing it.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_08: Like, I don't think I could dedicate an energy to planning out a trip, especially if I'm like flying to just go by myself because I feel like times like that are meant to be shared with other people.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_08: Um, because like the memories are great for yourself, but I mean they're even better whenever you're sharing them with somebody else.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_08: Yeah, um, so I would probably say probably not.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_08: Um, I do love my alone time, and I have no I have zero I have zero issue going to things by myself.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_08: I will go to concerts by myself, I will go out by myself, I'll go grab a beer by myself.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_08: I have no issue with that, but like planning a whole trip, probably not.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_08: No, I probably need to bring someone along.
- 1:05:59unknown: Yeah.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_04: I I mean I can I can understand it, I guess, you know, of a somebody that's a single person and you know what just wants to go experience a place and doesn't necessarily have like you know a friend that wants to go or do something like that.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_04: Like I respect those people that go out and just do something, you know, go to some place that they haven't experienced before because it is cool.
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_04: Like I went to a national park down in Miami and like it had like a you know a beach and everything, and it's got like these nature, like say we had the Everglades and everything.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_04: I wasn't I wasn't quite at the Everglades, I was at a place called Key Biscayne, which is a little more like beachy.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_04: Uh I wasn't straight song.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, there you go.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_04: See, I I did that cowgirls, straight song.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_04: How about them cowgirls?
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_04: Um, no, it was great.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_04: You paid four bucks, and it was just like, yeah, I'm just doing some exploring.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_04: I'm just here, I have the day, and it's really cool.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_04: Um, but I agree with you, doing stuff solo should not have the like stigma that it does.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_04: Like, I feel like people go and see somebody out like alone, like at a restaurant or something, they're just like, Look at that guy, he's got nothing to do.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_04: But like, it's like it's fine.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_04: I love going to the movie by myself, like I love doing all that.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_04: I don't know if I'd go to a concert by myself.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_04: That's something that you did that I have not done.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_04: I don't know if I'd do that.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_08: I I the reason why, like, especially with the concert thing, is like I usually whenever I'm doing that, I'm usually going to like a really intimate concert, like it's a small venue where it's not you won't look weird being there alone.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_08: Like at a big festival, like I can see you feeling kind of odd, yeah.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_08: You know, a big outdoor concert, but um, but yeah, no, no, I I genuinely love being alone.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_08: Like, I really do.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_08: I really like being by myself, but as much as I just as much as I like being with other people, you know, I'm a social guy, I'm an extrovert.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_08: I I think I'm an extrovert, but like I do really like you know my alone time, and I don't think it's that weird to want to go out and do something by yourself, especially if you're a single person.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_08: Like if you're married or something, it's kind of weird.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_08: That's weird, is weird.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_08: You have to bring your spouse, it's kind of sending the wrong message, otherwise.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_04: No, I just thought that was on my mind like all weekend because I was alone in Miami and I was like, I don't know, this is kind of a solo trip.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_04: I don't am I weird for like I know this is for work, but like, do I look weird to other people?
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_04: Sort of thing.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_04: But no, it was good times.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_04: Um, good, good, good topic.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, man.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_04: I just had that on on the brain, on the login.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_08: Yeah, there's not much going on in there.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_08: Everyone's we have an outlet spark to go.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_04: We have an outlet to talk about this stuff, so maybe may as well, you know.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_08: Might as well put it on our unsuspecting listeners.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_04: Um, all right, dude, song of the Did you have before the song of the week, though?
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_08: All right, we've officially crossed the threshold of a hundred less than a hundred days from now.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_08: The new four Big 12 teams will be in the in the conference.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_04: Uh-oh.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_08: So we're about to meet 14.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_08: Yeah, mostly for my BYU Mormons, you know, as a a a proud BYU BYU nar this whole time, you know.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_04: BY uner?
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_08: Not a coup.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_08: That's what us locals call them.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_04: Oh BYUNers.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_04: No, yeah, you're a big, you're a big BYU guy.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_04: Uh always have been.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_04: No, that's cool.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_04: Excited.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_04: 14 teams.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_04: Who will landscape shifts?
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_04: The landscape shifts, and then it will shift again, and then it may even shift again.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_04: Maybe once more after that, maybe 20 more times after that.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_04: Who's to freaking say in this podcast?
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_04: No, that's cool.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_04: Good, good tidbit there, my friend.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_04: All right, man.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_04: What you got?
- 1:09:23SPEAKER_04: Song of the week.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_04: Go ahead.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_08: So I'm so freaking late to this party, known as the Zach Bryan party.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_08: Like, he's a main, he's actually broken into mainstream country music with not mainstream country music.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_08: Like, he sounds like he'd be from the Texas scene.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_08: I mean, I think he's from Oklahoma, so he's like he he makes that kind of music.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_08: Um, and it's just his songwriting's just really struck a cold chord.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_08: But I'm gonna go with one that's like really easy to get into uh with this stuff.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_08: It's really digestible and just a banger, well written.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_08: Oklahoma Smoke Show is what I'm going with off the summertime blues.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_08: Um, kind of, you know, poking at uh people who stay in their small towns while others kind of get out of it and like people that kind of stay in that rut.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_08: Um, it's not always a good thing, you know.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_08: Oftentimes it's glamorized, but other times it's not.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_08: So that's what I'm going with.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_08: Oklahoma Smoke Show, Zach Bryan.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_00: She's a nobleman small show.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_00: He's an asshole from back home.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_00: She'll never make it out.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_04: No, I I you've said this a couple times in the group text, uh, mostly when you were you've had a couple beers in you.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_04: Uh just say this song rules, dude.
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_07: It's so good.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_04: No, uh, Kristen actually had this on her uh on her playlist.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_04: Oh shoot.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, she's had it a while ago, and it's it plays pretty consistently in the car.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_04: It is a good song.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_04: Um, I'm confused because I thought you were a Zach Bryan, not hater, but you definitely thought that he was overrated.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_08: Is that to say I don't think I ever said overrated?
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_08: I just like what I was saying is like, I don't understand it because I was never ripping on him.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_08: I was like, I don't, I was like, I don't really get it yet.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_08: Because it's weird.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_08: I don't know what really separates him from um everybody else in the in the Texas country scene.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_08: He really does sound a lot like everybody else, and that's not a dig.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_08: Like the songwriting is absolutely spectacular.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_08: But what was combuddling me is how popular he was.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_08: I was like, this shouldn't be happening.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_08: It's connected.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_08: It is, it's happening now.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_08: Like it just it just didn't seem rational to me why he was popular because he's playing on the the series next to him the highway, and that channel sucks.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_08: It blows, it's awful.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_08: And I'm not just saying this as like a a mainstream hater.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_08: Like I'm just saying that as like a that station never plays anything good.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_04: So you don't like hunting, fishing, and loving every day by Luke Bryan.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_08: That's the prayer that this country boy prays.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_08: No, I'm more of a knocking boots by Luke Bryan kind of guy.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, big time.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_08: Big time.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_08: Knocking boots.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_04: I don't even know that song.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_08: So uh it's just it's just like hunting, fishing every day, only sex is mixed into it.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_04: Oh, cool.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_04: Another element for our guy, another lay of complexity.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_04: Luke Bryan, the goat.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_04: More at five.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_07: Why are you adding a question mark?
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_07: Just leave it on a period.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_04: No, that's uh that's a good song.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_04: I it is a good song.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_04: Oklahoma Smoke Show is a good song, Zach Bryan.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_04: That's a that's a great choice.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_04: Um, my song of the week is a guy who is very much like Zach Bryan in the mainstream, but also makes good music, and that's Luke Combs.
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, came out with his new album, Getting Old.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_04: Um, I haven't listened to a lot of it, to be honest, but I did see uh a particular song caught my eye, and that was Fast Car.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_04: Um that's uh uh you know a cover of the Tracy Chapman, you know, famous song.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_04: Um it's fantastic.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_04: He really nails it.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_04: Um, it's fast car might be one of my top five songs of all time.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_04: I think it's a talk tech song.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_04: It's it's tremendous, in the wise words of Matt Wells.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_04: Um, and Luke Combs nails it.
- 1:13:15SPEAKER_04: I think I heard a version of it where he sang it live on maybe a YouTube binge or something like that.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_04: Um, but he finally put it on an album and it is just as good.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_04: Um, and that's so that's Luke Combs' fast car.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_00: You got a fast car.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_00: Is it fast enough so we can fly a wing?
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_00: Still gotta make a decision.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_00: Leave tonight or live and die this way.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_08: Great pick.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_08: Great.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_08: I know you know you and I both love covers so much.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_08: Um, and I love Luke Combs.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_08: I love what he represents in mainstream country music.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_08: And like he was just in San Antonio.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_08: Um, I don't know if the San Antonio Rodeo is going on right now, but I I would have to he was at least doing a concert there.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and the P the bands he has open up for him.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_08: He has Flatland Cavalry opening up for freaking Luke Combs, the biggest country star in the world right now.
- 1:14:08SPEAKER_08: That's him.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_08: That's not his that's not his studio saying you have because otherwise it'd be like freaking uh pop rock, pretty boy, up next guy.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_08: No, it's yeah flatland who is nobody in the mainstream, he just likes him that much, and I just respect the hell out of that.
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's he's managed to make the balance work really well of maintaining good music, but also being like that superstar kind of guy, um, which is uh extremely impressive because a lot of guys don't do that.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_04: You either have to go one way or the other.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_08: I think he's like the next, like he's like now's Garth Brooks sort of guy, like or now's like almost George Straight kind of guy.
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_08: Like, I think that's who he is.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's kind of he's kind of done the stapleton thing, which is yeah, uh always my favorite type of music where you still make jams, but you're also like a lovable type of guy, yeah.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_08: So really approachable, yeah, absolutely.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_04: So good songs, man.
