- 0:03Don Armstrong: Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this is the one and only in real time car talk show.
- 0:09Don Armstrong: It's award-winning.
- 0:10Don Armstrong: Just ahead, what the Hemings auction car sold for.
- 0:15Don Armstrong: And recalls.
- 0:16Don Armstrong: Later, Jeff has the racing calendar, Mars has This Week in Auto History, and I'll have the stories making automotive news headlines.
- 0:22Don Armstrong: Howdy, along with Mike out of this world, Mars.
- 0:25Don Armstrong: We always need more Jeff Zeke and I'm Dot Armstrong.
- 0:28Don Armstrong: Glad you could join us today.
- 0:29Don Armstrong: David Ainsley taking a little break.
- 0:31Don Armstrong: He's gearing up for our big remote broadcast coming up in Granbury, Texas.
- 0:36Don Armstrong: That's our next remote.
- 0:37Don Armstrong: That's coming up in June.
- 0:39Don Armstrong: So we're about to let's see, next month.
- 0:43Don Armstrong: One month away.
- 0:44Don Armstrong: There you go.
- 0:45Mike Marrs: Yes.
- 0:46Mike Marrs: Almost exactly.
- 0:47Don Armstrong: So let's start with the recalls, shall we?
- 0:51Don Armstrong: Because um there are always enough recalls every week to fill up an entire library.
- 0:58Don Armstrong: And uh it's not just one automaker, it's a lot of them.
- 1:02Don Armstrong: Mercedes Benz, front passenger seat belt may not fasten.
- 1:05Don Armstrong: I guess you'll know that pretty quick, huh?
- 1:08Don Armstrong: CLA 250 Plus, that's an EV, and the CLA 350 formatic, also an EV for 2026.
- 1:15Don Armstrong: A rear bench seat may be missing seat legs.
- 1:19Don Armstrong: Well, I guess you'd know that pretty much once you sat down on it, you're sitting on the floor.
- 1:24Don Armstrong: Missing seat legs on the Ram ProMaster Van 2026.
- 1:28Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 1:29Jeff Dziekan: Okay, you got your back seat, you got your back bottom seat.
- 1:31Jeff Dziekan: Okay, ship it.
- 1:32Don Armstrong: Yeah, that's it.
- 1:33Jeff Dziekan: Where's the legs?
- 1:34Don Armstrong: There's no legs.
- 1:35Don Armstrong: No legs.
- 1:36Don Armstrong: Um blank instrument panel display.
- 1:40Don Armstrong: Every Mercedes Benz known to America, 25 and 26.
- 1:44Don Armstrong: There's too many to go through.
- 1:45Don Armstrong: Look at this.
- 1:46Don Armstrong: Look at how many there are.
- 1:47Jeff Dziekan: You said blank, I thought it was a swear word you were blanking out.
- 1:50Don Armstrong: No.
- 1:50Jeff Dziekan: How they do that blank.
- 1:51Don Armstrong: Look at that.
- 1:52Don Armstrong: How many is that?
- 1:52Don Armstrong: 50?
- 1:53Don Armstrong: Something like that.
- 1:54Don Armstrong: Anyway, so my recommendation is if you own a Mercedes-Benz from the 24 to 26 model years, I would suggest that you go to safercar.gov, put in your VIN number.
- 2:06Don Armstrong: Yep.
- 2:06Don Armstrong: And if you don't know where to find that, it's in your wallet or online with your insurance man.
- 2:11Jeff Dziekan: Yep.
- 2:11Don Armstrong: And it's got the VIN number there, and you plug that in and it'll tell you what is recalled and what is not.
- 2:17Don Armstrong: Now, rear view camera image may not display in the Tesla, Model 3, SX, and Y.
- 2:23Don Armstrong: Those are several of them.
- 2:24Don Armstrong: From 717 and also 21 to 23 miles.
- 2:30Don Armstrong: And um the vehicle can exceed the speed rating of the tires.
- 2:35Don Armstrong: In the RAM 2500 for 23 through 26.
- 2:39Jeff Dziekan: 2500, that's an E-rated tire.
- 2:41Jeff Dziekan: There could be an E-rated tire for commercial.
- 2:44Jeff Dziekan: Anything over 2500, we would have a heavier built tire.
- 2:47Jeff Dziekan: That's strange.
- 2:48Mike Marrs: What kind of speed would that be rated for, Jeff?
- 2:51Jeff Dziekan: I I that I don't know.
- 2:52Jeff Dziekan: I don't know what the latest is, but if you got a big 250, you know, 2500 truck, you're gonna have a stout, more meaty tire, thicker, harder drive.
- 3:02Jeff Dziekan: To hold all the cargo.
- 3:04Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 3:04Jeff Dziekan: So uh gosh, I don't know.
- 3:06Mike Marrs: So you're saying the tires aren't rated for 200 miles an hour on that truck?
- 3:10Mike Marrs: Probably not.
- 3:11Don Armstrong: Probably not.
- 3:12Don Armstrong: Yeah, I don't think the truck can do 200 miles an hour.
- 3:14Don Armstrong: So get did you hear anything there that was missing?
- 3:17Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, uh the F-word.
- 3:19Don Armstrong: Yes, the F-word was missing out of that.
- 3:22Don Armstrong: Ford did not have a recall this week.
- 3:25Don Armstrong: It's a miracle.
- 3:26Mike Marrs: Their internet's down.
- 3:28Jeff Dziekan: Uh that's it.
- 3:30Jeff Dziekan: That's fake news.
- 3:31Don Armstrong: That is fake, that's fake news right there.
- 3:35Jeff Dziekan: Okay.
- 3:36Jeff Dziekan: He didn't use the F-word.
- 3:37Don Armstrong: Let's let's move on and let's do this week's sold cars from Hemming.
- 3:43Jeff Dziekan: Let's get everybody uh gathered up.
- 3:44Jeff Dziekan: Gather around, everyone.
- 3:45Don Armstrong: Gather around.
- 3:46Don Armstrong: So uh first one up today.
- 3:48Don Armstrong: Now you're gonna guess the price at what this thing sold for at Heming's online auction.
- 3:53Don Armstrong: Okay?
- 3:53Mike Marrs: Okay, look at that.
- 3:55Don Armstrong: This is a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro.
- 4:00Don Armstrong: Now, I don't know whether this is a resto mod because I what is 578?
- 4:09Don Armstrong: 578.
- 4:10Don Armstrong: There let me tell you something.
- 4:11Don Armstrong: The Z28 in 19 uh 69 did not have a 578 offering.
- 4:16Mike Marrs: So this is a nor did it have a six-speed manual.
- 4:20Don Armstrong: So this is a resto mod.
- 4:21Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 4:22Don Armstrong: Um it's got the body, but it ain't got the guts.
- 4:26Don Armstrong: Now, if I'm gonna spend any kind of money on a 1969 Chevy Camaro, it's gonna have the DZ engine in it with a four-speed manual transmission because that's the way the Z28 came back then.
- 4:38Don Armstrong: But that's just me.
- 4:39Don Armstrong: This is this.
- 4:40Don Armstrong: So how much do you think that the 69 Camaro Resto mod sold for?
- 4:44Jeff Dziekan: $72,000.
- 4:46Jeff Dziekan: Jeff Heisman says$65,000.
- 4:49Don Armstrong: Anyone else?
- 4:51Don Armstrong: Anybody else want to join in or earlier?
- 4:53Mike Marrs: I I don't know if uh we've lost him or not.
- 4:55Mike Marrs: But yeah, this is a pretty bad car.
- 4:59Don Armstrong: I mean bad meaning good.
- 5:01Mike Marrs: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:02Mike Marrs: I mean, you're talking about a monster big block, you got a six speed, and uh let's twist that body round.
- 5:08Don Armstrong: Good looking car.
- 5:09Don Armstrong: Yeah, it really is.
- 5:10Don Armstrong: I'm not a I'm not gonna stick.
- 5:11Don Armstrong: Okay, well, yeah, well, I know.
- 5:13Don Armstrong: So the sold car price was sixty-three thousand dollars.
- 5:16Jeff Dziekan: Oh, Jeff, got it.
- 5:18Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, we'll give it to Jeff.
- 5:19Don Armstrong: Yeah, Jeff Heitzman uh did very well on that one.
- 5:22Don Armstrong: All right, next up.
- 5:23Don Armstrong: The 1986 Jeep CJ7, and I bring this up because it's got the square headlights, that everybody threw a fit over, and Jeep said, Oh we're so sorry, we messed up, we're not gonna make those anymore.
- 5:39Don Armstrong: But I thought that it was interesting that this one is up for sale and uh obviously it's modified, you know, no stock wheels, nothing stock on this.
- 5:47Jeff Dziekan: And I'm sorry, what year again?
- 5:49Don Armstrong: This is a 1986, okay.
- 5:51Mike Marrs: But it's that's not the eighty-six front end on it.
- 5:53Mike Marrs: They changed that front end to put those square headlights on it intentionally.
- 5:57Don Armstrong: Okay, well, whatever the case may be, I'm just telling you that uh this one has the square headlights.
- 6:03Jeff Dziekan: 17 grand.
- 6:04Jeff Dziekan: Jeff says 55,000.
- 6:07Jeff Dziekan: I say 17.
- 6:08Don Armstrong: Really?
- 6:08Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 6:09Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 6:10Mike Marrs: V8 conversion and everything.
- 6:12Don Armstrong: Does it have a V8 in it?
- 6:13Don Armstrong: Yeah, it looks to be Oh my.
- 6:15Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 6:16Jeff Dziekan: Hellcat maybe in a throttle bottom.
- 6:18Jeff Dziekan: I think it's an LS.
- 6:19Jeff Dziekan: LS.
- 6:19Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 6:20Don Armstrong: So it sold for$33,075.
- 6:23Don Armstrong: Wow.
- 6:24Don Armstrong: Uh, it looks good.
- 6:25Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 6:25Don Armstrong: If you're into that sort of thing.
- 6:27Don Armstrong: But um, I thought it was kind of interesting that they had the square headlights on it that everybody threw a fit at when they Jeep put that on there.
- 6:35Don Armstrong: Next up 1967 Ford Mustang.
- 6:40Don Armstrong: Now, this is a fastback model, and it looks stock like it is stock.
- 6:46Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 6:47Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 6:48Don Armstrong: Now, we don't know whether the car has been racked or in the the many years on it and probably all those miles on it, I would imagine that it has been refurbished at least once or twice.
- 6:59Don Armstrong: So, um, and I tell you that on purpose because uh the price may reflect that.
- 7:04Jeff Dziekan: 21,000.
- 7:06Don Armstrong: 21,000.
- 7:07Don Armstrong: Yes, sir.
- 7:08Mike Marrs: It is, it is.
- 7:09Mike Marrs: If you look at the engine there, it is an S Code 390 in that car.
- 7:13Don Armstrong: Oh.
- 7:15Don Armstrong: That was that offered in 67, a 390?
- 7:18Mike Marrs: Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 7:19Mike Marrs: That's good.
- 7:20Mike Marrs: The bullet Mustang was a 390.
- 7:22Mike Marrs: It was built off.
- 7:23Don Armstrong: It says 60,000.
- 7:24Don Armstrong: Jeff says 60,000.
- 7:26Jeff Dziekan: I say 21.
- 7:27Don Armstrong: Jeffman.
- 7:29Jeff Dziekan: Jeff Heisman says 60,000.
- 7:30Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 7:31Don Armstrong: And you say 21?
- 7:32Jeff Dziekan: Right.
- 7:33Jeff Dziekan: Anybody else, maybe?
- 7:34Don Armstrong: I don't know if anybody else is on online with us today, but I will tell you that it sold for$80,050.
- 7:41Jeff Dziekan: Wow.
- 7:42Don Armstrong: That's a nice looking car.
- 7:43Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 7:44Don Armstrong: I'm not a big Mustang guy, but boy, I like that.
- 7:47Jeff Dziekan: Yep.
- 7:48Don Armstrong: Next up.
- 7:50Don Armstrong: A 1969 Pontiac Firebird.
- 7:53Jeff Dziekan: Uh-oh.
- 7:54Don Armstrong: Not a big fan, but I will tell you that I think that this is an all-original.
- 8:00Jeff Dziekan: I'd take this over there, Mustang.
- 8:02Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 8:02Jeff Dziekan: Absolutely.
- 8:04Don Armstrong: Well, um, I will tell you that um it looks like it's an all-original car.
- 8:09unknown: Okay.
- 8:10Mike Marrs: If you look at that that top left-hand picture, you can see it's got a functional RAM air setup on it.
- 8:15Mike Marrs: Yeah, I see that.
- 8:15Jeff Dziekan: With all the foam on it.
- 8:16Don Armstrong: That would be one of the first ones, wouldn't it?
- 8:18unknown: Yeah.
- 8:18Mike Marrs: Yes, it would be.
- 8:20Mike Marrs: Uh so it's a 400 cubic hitch engine on it, too, then.
- 8:23Jeff Dziekan: I'm gonna go 55,000.
- 8:29Don Armstrong: Let's see if uh Mr.
- 8:30Don Armstrong: Heitzman.
- 8:31Mike Marrs: Yeah, he is.
- 8:32Mike Marrs: I'm just I'm I'm taking notes and he's got sixty-four thousand.
- 8:36Don Armstrong: Well, guess what?
- 8:37Don Armstrong: Neither one of you guys came anywhere close because it sold for$159,600.
- 8:43Jeff Dziekan: I didn't have$50,000 to spend anyway.
- 8:45Don Armstrong: Well, I wouldn't have even made a down payment.
- 8:48Mike Marrs: One of the notes, which I don't know how you'd tell that from the pictures, but it this is one of five hundred and five cars made like this.
- 8:55Mike Marrs: So that's what drove the price up.
- 8:57Jeff Dziekan: That's a good looking, good looking uh bird.
- 8:59Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 9:00Don Armstrong: Well, I'll tell you what, I don't know as if I'd even pull it out in the sunshine, I'd be with that kind of money invested in.
- 9:05Jeff Dziekan: Look at this.
- 9:06Don Armstrong: Okay, next up, a 1948 Lincoln Continental.
- 9:11Don Armstrong: This would be one of those uh May West or uh or uh yeah.
- 9:16Don Armstrong: Yeah, yeah, there's famous movie star cars in like a May West.
- 9:22Don Armstrong: May West, I think was before this, but whatever.
- 9:25Don Armstrong: Yeah, one of those.
- 9:26Don Armstrong: This is a movie star car from the late 40s, so this is post-World War II, 1942, Lincoln Continental convertible.
- 9:35Jeff Dziekan: 42,000.
- 9:37Don Armstrong: 42?
- 9:38Jeff Dziekan: Jeff says 90,000.
- 9:41Don Armstrong: You may be surprised.
- 9:44Don Armstrong: This car sold for$29,400.
- 9:48Don Armstrong: Wow.
- 9:50Mike Marrs: This original flathead V8.
- 9:52Mike Marrs: I mean that's cool.
- 9:55Mike Marrs: To me, that's a deal.
- 9:56Don Armstrong: Look at the chrome on the dash.
- 9:59Don Armstrong: This buttons the front bumper.
- 10:02Don Armstrong: Golly.
- 10:03Don Armstrong: That's pretty cool.
- 10:04Don Armstrong: All right.
- 10:05Don Armstrong: Next up.
- 10:06Jeff Dziekan: This is for Jeff Zeke.
- 10:08Jeff Dziekan: Oh, yeah.
- 10:09Jeff Dziekan: What do you think that is?
- 10:10Jeff Dziekan: I think that's amazing.
- 10:11Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, besides that.
- 10:12Jeff Dziekan: That's that's a uh is it a fairlane?
- 10:15Jeff Dziekan: It is a Ford Falcon.
- 10:16Don Armstrong: Falcon.
- 10:17Don Armstrong: I did not know that Falcon came in a in a wagon.
- 10:21Jeff Dziekan: Gorgeous, gorgeous.
- 10:22Mike Marrs: It's all right.
- 10:25Mike Marrs: They had a wagon.
- 10:26Mike Marrs: The panel truck, though, is what makes this really unique.
- 10:28Jeff Dziekan: Yes, yes.
- 10:30Don Armstrong: Yeah, that's right.
- 10:30Don Armstrong: That is a panel.
- 10:32Jeff Dziekan: I'm not so keen on that uh building there on the side.
- 10:37Jeff Dziekan: All right, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna I'm gonna stick in the uh the$40,000 range.
- 10:42Jeff Dziekan: Really?
- 10:42Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 10:43Jeff Dziekan: Hot dog.
- 10:44Jeff Dziekan: I I just don't see it.
- 10:45Jeff Dziekan: I I I can't get the number in my head.
- 10:48Jeff Dziekan: Jeff says$20.
- 10:49Don Armstrong: 20.
- 10:50Don Armstrong: It's sold for$8,100.
- 10:53Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 10:53Don Armstrong: You know it's got a straight six in it.
- 10:55Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, it doesn't matter.
- 10:56Jeff Dziekan: I'd drive it.
- 10:57Don Armstrong: I just think that's uh the chrome on the top, between the top and the body, it it's distracting.
- 11:04Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 11:05Don Armstrong: That's uh I'm not a big fan of the color.
- 11:07Mike Marrs: It's a modified wagon that they took and made a slow panel out of it.
- 11:11Jeff Dziekan: But we don't see the suspension, so that could be hacked up too.
- 11:14Mike Marrs: Well, if you really want to know the truth, it's riding on a Lincoln Continental chassis with a 50 V8 on it, which you can't see in the pictures by any means.
- 11:21Jeff Dziekan: And it went for eight grand?
- 11:22Don Armstrong: 81.
- 11:24Don Armstrong: Yeah, 81,$8,100.
- 11:27Don Armstrong: All right, next up, kind of a cousin to this one.
- 11:30Don Armstrong: This is a 1962 Ford Ranchero.
- 11:34Don Armstrong: Oh, the SA.
- 11:36Don Armstrong: And it's got it also has a straight six in it.
- 11:39Don Armstrong: Um, it's petty blue, and I'm sure that Ford has a uh uh paint color for that, but whatever, you've seen them a billion times.
- 11:46Jeff Dziekan: All right, since the other one went, and there was a little bit better pick on this, is more original.
- 11:51Jeff Dziekan: I'm gonna go six grand.
- 11:53Don Armstrong: Six grand.
- 11:54Don Armstrong: So there you go.
- 11:54Don Armstrong: What is what does Mr.
- 11:55Don Armstrong: Heitzman say?
- 11:57Mike Marrs: Uh he's uh coming in at 11 grand.
- 12:01Don Armstrong: 11,000.
- 12:02Don Armstrong: Okay, you ready?
- 12:03Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 12:04Don Armstrong: This would be something that Heitzman would.
- 12:06Mike Marrs: 112,000.
- 12:07Don Armstrong: It sold for$8,500.
- 12:10Mike Marrs: And it's an automatic.
- 12:11Mike Marrs: Thank you.
- 12:12Don Armstrong: Is it an automatic?
- 12:14Mike Marrs: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:14Mike Marrs: I had to look really close at the pictures, but it's there's not a third pedal in there.
- 12:18Jeff Dziekan: And there's this uh so it's not like a three on a tree then.
- 12:21Jeff Dziekan: No.
- 12:22Mike Marrs: It's automatic.
- 12:23Mike Marrs: I'd drive it.
- 12:24Don Armstrong: So that would be a two-speed automatic.
- 12:28Mike Marrs: Oh, I I'd be pretty sure.
- 12:30Mike Marrs: I'm not sure about a Ford in 63, two or three.
- 12:34Don Armstrong: Yeah, 62.
- 12:34Don Armstrong: Yeah, it'd be a two-speed automatic.
- 12:36Jeff Dziekan: It's probably the same out of the Mustang.
- 12:39unknown: Yeah.
- 12:39Don Armstrong: Um, yeah, you're probably right.
- 12:42Don Armstrong: But this Mustang didn't come along until 64.
- 12:44Jeff Dziekan: Right, but it's yeah.
- 12:45Don Armstrong: It's the same setup.
- 12:46Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 12:47Don Armstrong: All right, and finally, our last car today is going to be a 1997 Mercedes-Benz SL 600.
- 12:59Jeff Dziekan: Check that against your recall.
- 13:03Jeff Dziekan: Oh, it's got a phone in it.
- 13:05Jeff Dziekan: Ooh.
- 13:06Jeff Dziekan: Isn't that a phone?
- 13:07Jeff Dziekan: It's got a fun.
- 13:08Don Armstrong: Oh, yeah.
- 13:09Don Armstrong: A built-in fun in the uh and the center console.
- 13:13Don Armstrong: Now, what kind of intake manifold is that?
- 13:16Mike Marrs: That is a V12, 6.0 liter V12 engine.
- 13:21Jeff Dziekan: My God.
- 13:22Jeff Dziekan: And a year again?
- 13:23Don Armstrong: This is a 1997.
- 13:26Don Armstrong: That thing's got some torque.
- 13:28Mike Marrs: Got drop top on it.
- 13:30Jeff Dziekan: 21,000.
- 13:32Don Armstrong: 21,000.
- 13:33Don Armstrong: I'm not a Mercedes fan.
- 13:34Don Armstrong: I'm not either.
- 13:35Don Armstrong: But see, here's another one that we're trying to get Heitzman to spend 42 for Jeffrey.
- 13:41Don Armstrong: Get get get into the uh into the car business.
- 13:44Don Armstrong: He'd look good in that.
- 13:45Don Armstrong: He would.
- 13:45Don Armstrong: He would.
- 13:46Don Armstrong: And he'd be the talk, he'd be the talk of NASA.
- 13:49Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 13:51Don Armstrong: So uh, and he says 42,000.
- 13:54Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 13:54Don Armstrong: Well, guess who won this bid?
- 13:57Don Armstrong: Uh nobody.
- 13:58Don Armstrong: That would be Jeff Zeken for the price of$20,475.
- 14:05Don Armstrong: So you're almost spot on.
- 14:07Mike Marrs: Almost there.
- 14:07Mike Marrs: But can't you just see Heisman rolling down NASA Road 1 with that phone cord hanging down while he's talking to nobody but looking cool with a drop top?
- 14:17Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 14:17Don Armstrong: Talking about his investments.
- 14:19Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 14:20Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 14:20Don Armstrong: And uh buy-sell stuff.
- 14:22Jeff Dziekan: Well, when you drop the top, it's got like a tonneau behind it or the the windscreen.
- 14:26Jeff Dziekan: Oh, yeah.
- 14:27Jeff Dziekan: Yep.
- 14:27Jeff Dziekan: The windscreen, yeah.
- 14:28Don Armstrong: You gotta have all that.
- 14:30Don Armstrong: You know, it'd be it'd be really cool if that was a like an estate sale and the car only had like 12,000 miles on it or something.
- 14:36Don Armstrong: And it was full of it.
- 14:37Don Armstrong: It looks like it's all stock.
- 14:38Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 14:39Mike Marrs: Oh yeah, yeah, it is.
- 14:40Mike Marrs: It's uh what I remember reading in the notes.
- 14:43Mike Marrs: You know, that's the reason the phone and all that stuff's still in it.
- 14:46Don Armstrong: That's very cool.
- 14:47Don Armstrong: All right.

- 18:34Jeff Dziekan: Uh it doesn't say here, but I'm gonna be uh say what one o'clock?
- 18:38Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, probably cover starts at noon or something.
- 18:40Jeff Dziekan: I'm not sure.
- 18:41Jeff Dziekan: We'll I'll check with you.
- 18:42Don Armstrong: Okay, you'll let us know.
- 18:44Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 18:45Don Armstrong: All right.
- 18:45Don Armstrong: Uh Mr.
- 18:46Don Armstrong: Mars, it's time now for this week in auto history.
- 18:49Mike Marrs: Yes, sir, it is.
- 18:50Mike Marrs: We've got a few stories that we found that were really interesting.
- 18:53Mike Marrs: And uh gonna start out with this week in 1947.
- 18:59Mike Marrs: Tucker, Preston Tucker, publicly demonstrated the Tucker 48 center mount cyclops eye.
- 19:06Mike Marrs: You know, that was the headlight right in the middle of the grill area there, and it turned as you turned the steering wheel, which was very innovative.
- 19:15Mike Marrs: Didn't Ford have that option too?
- 19:17Don Armstrong: Studebaker uh actually built a car.
- 19:19Mike Marrs: There you go.
- 19:20Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 19:20Mike Marrs: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:21Mike Marrs: So there was there was a it it was very considered very futuristic, and it was before all the adaptive headlights and stuff that we've got now, and a lot of cars we have now will do that something quite similar.
- 19:32Mike Marrs: Uh but it was they wouldn't couldn't get it approved in several states that wouldn't sell because of the safety features of it.
- 19:39Mike Marrs: They didn't like it, they said it wasn't good, they couldn't use it.
- 19:42Mike Marrs: Uh some of the other things that he came up with were the uh seat belts, padded dashboards, a lot of concepts that we now have that we take for granted that came out of that Tucker process.
- 19:53Mike Marrs: Then in this week in 1962.
- 19:57Don Armstrong: Great year.
- 19:59Mike Marrs: Parnelly Jones hit 150 miles per hour at the Indianapolis 500.
- 20:04Mike Marrs: Now, this was considered a a sound barrier for race cars.
- 20:08Mike Marrs: They just couldn't get any faster than that.
- 20:10Mike Marrs: But he was driving the legendary Watson Offenhauser Roadster, and he actually went through and qualified at 150.370 miles per hour.
- 20:20Mike Marrs: Now it proved that front engine roadsters still had a lot of life in them because everybody was starting to move towards the mid-engine type cars.
- 20:27Mike Marrs: And uh it was the first one to do that, and now it's pretty common, but it did change fundamentally the geometry of indie car racing forever.
- 20:36Mike Marrs: Also, this week, 1969, the shore Chevrolet Corvair made its official end after a turbulent decade.
- 20:44Mike Marrs: Uh it was really launched as an engineering marvel, and it quickly became a political fault target.
- 20:51Mike Marrs: Everybody was after it for a lot of different reasons.
- 20:54Mike Marrs: But it was American-designed, mass-produced passenger car with a rear-mounted air-cooled engine.
- 20:59Mike Marrs: It's the only one.
- 21:00Mike Marrs: It could not overcome the stigma that was created by Ralph Nader's Unsafe at Any Speed book.
- 21:06Don Armstrong: And that was the version one car that uh they stopped building in 1965 and moved to this particular body style.
- 21:14Don Armstrong: Just thought I'd throw that in.
- 21:16Mike Marrs: Okay.
- 21:16Mike Marrs: Well, by May 69, sales of the Corveyor itself, that they just they just couldn't sell them, and they're Gore Conventional Camaro was really taking over the spotlight anyway.
- 21:26Mike Marrs: Sales were blowing and going on that.
- 21:28Mike Marrs: So, one thing about the final 1969 models, they're they're really considered prize collectibles for several reasons.
- 21:35Mike Marrs: There was only 6,000 of them made.
- 21:38Mike Marrs: They were hand several of the last cars were hand built because they already took them off the production line, but they were still building them in a special area offline at the Willow Run plant.
- 21:48Mike Marrs: Those are the cars that are really collectible.
- 21:51Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 21:53Mike Marrs: Then in nineteen seventy three.
- 21:56Mike Marrs: Oh yes, getting into the interlock.
- 22:00Mike Marrs: And I did not know this, but they started doing the testing of the federally mandated seatbelt ignition interlock systems in the United States.
- 22:08Mike Marrs: So, in other words, the safety feature was that if you didn't have your seatbelt on, you couldn't start your car.
- 22:14Mike Marrs: And and it created a lot of problems.
- 22:16Mike Marrs: A lot of people thought, oh, it's a great safety idea, you know, but uh they didn't work real well fundamentally in the real world, if nothing else.
- 22:24Mike Marrs: For example, um a mechanic that needed to start the car so they'll work on it under the hood.
- 22:31Mike Marrs: Well, there was a button under the hood, so you could push it one time to start the motor from under the hood.
- 22:35Mike Marrs: If it died, then you were SOL.
- 22:38Mike Marrs: You had to get in the car, buckle up, and all that.
- 22:45Mike Marrs: Yes.
- 22:46Mike Marrs: So it got to be a very controversial aspect of it because people were trying to buckle up the seat belts and set on them, and there was just all kinds of workarounds they were trying to do.
- 22:54Mike Marrs: And so they finally overturned it.
- 22:56Mike Marrs: That's why I guess I never heard of it because it didn't last very long.
- 22:59Mike Marrs: I think it was about a year, 18 months that they actually had this out there, and it just never did really get pushed out into the main market.
- 23:07Mike Marrs: Then in uh 2004, the Mustang actually, the Ford Mustang left the Ford River Rouge complex.
- 23:17Mike Marrs: That's where it had been built forever and ever and uh since 1964.
- 23:22Mike Marrs: And it'd been that's where everything was built with the Mustang.
- 23:25Mike Marrs: But however, they took the final 2004 GT convertible, rolled off the line, and then they moved it over to the modern flat rock assembly plant.
- 23:33Mike Marrs: So 40 years the Rouge plant had been defined as Mustang's blue-collar performance identity, and it it just changed.
- 23:40Mike Marrs: They moved it on.
- 23:42Mike Marrs: And that was just some couple of things that we found interesting.
- 23:44Mike Marrs: There is one more thing, though.
- 23:45Mike Marrs: This right here.
- 23:47Mike Marrs: Jeff, this is for you.
- 23:49Mike Marrs: Thank you.
- 23:50Mike Marrs: This is a Buick white job.
- 23:52Mike Marrs: Yes, it is.
- 23:54Mike Marrs: So it was a convertible car that Buick made as one of the first concept cars that was ever built.
- 24:00Mike Marrs: It was designed by Harley Earl, uh, had the hidden headlamps, had a gunsight hood ornament, electric windows, wrapper, it had a lot of stuff on it, and he actually drove one of these until he replaced it with a 1951.
- 24:12Mike Marrs: But I just thought that that is is there's a lot of different things on that car that looked really good as far as the the lines on it, much like a cord possibly, the front end.
- 24:24Mike Marrs: It just I just thought it was a gorgeous car.
- 24:25Mike Marrs: And then whenever I found the name of a it was a Buick Y job, I just figured that was just right up your alley.
- 24:31Jeff Dziekan: Right up my alley.
- 24:32Jeff Dziekan: Yep.
- 24:32Mike Marrs: That's the thing we found this week in automotive history.
- 24:36Don Armstrong: Well, I will tell you that there is uh some video or film of Harley Earle driving it.
- 24:42Don Armstrong: Yeah, and he drove that thing back and forth to work.
- 24:44Jeff Dziekan: Did I didn't he have it made for himself?
- 24:45Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 24:46Jeff Dziekan: I thought he had it made for himself.
- 24:47Jeff Dziekan: Could could I add interject one thing?
- 24:49Jeff Dziekan: I missed something in the racing.
- 24:51Jeff Dziekan: Uh next Thursday is carburation day for Indy.
- 24:55Jeff Dziekan: And carburetor mobile race.
- 25:01Jeff Dziekan: So it's gonna be the Wiener 500 tomorrow of next Thursday on Carb Day at Indy.
- 25:06Jeff Dziekan: Uh it'll be telecom.
- 25:09Jeff Dziekan: Carburation Day is what they call it.
- 25:11Jeff Dziekan: It's where they test and get their cars tweaked out, but they're gonna have the Oscar Meyer Wiener Mobile 500.
- 25:17Jeff Dziekan: They did it last year, it was a great hit.
- 25:18Mike Marrs: How many Oscar Wiener mobiles do they have?
- 25:21Jeff Dziekan: I think there's four.
- 25:22Jeff Dziekan: There's either four or five mobile.
- 25:24Jeff Dziekan: Is it six?
- 25:24Jeff Dziekan: It might be six.
- 25:25Jeff Dziekan: I think it's six.
- 25:26Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 25:26Jeff Dziekan: And I think it's sponsored by like Bob's Mustard Emporium.
- 25:30Jeff Dziekan: Uh and you could get like a slather, a dollop, or a squirt of mustard uh free or something.
- 25:35Don Armstrong: You know, on the inside.
- 25:37Don Armstrong: And I know this for a fact, I got pictures actually.
- 25:40Don Armstrong: In the middle, they use like vinyl linoleum down there in the in the middle of the the wiener mobile, and they have a mustard thing down the middle of it.
- 25:52Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 25:53Jeff Dziekan: So very the Bob's must mustard thing is a thinking about buying a new car?
- 25:58Don Armstrong: Instead of auto loan terms, we're expected to keep customers out of the market longer.
- 26:02Don Armstrong: Instead, they're doing the opposite, accelerating return cycles and creating tougher deals for finance and insurance offices.
- 26:09Don Armstrong: New data from JD Power shows twenty percent of all new car buyers return to market within three to four years.
- 26:16Don Armstrong: For buyers who financed with 84 month loans, the figure jumps to 45%.
- 26:23Don Armstrong: The dynamic is boosting showroom traffic, but it's also increasing the number of customers arriving with little or negative equity.
- 26:29Don Armstrong: Not good.
- 26:30Don Armstrong: For dealerships, that trade-off is paying out unevenly, depending on brand and customer base.
- 26:37Don Armstrong: 2025, 26% of used vehicle trade-ins carried negative equity, up from 24% a year earlier.
- 26:43Don Armstrong: Average trade-in equity slipped to$7,099, down six hundred and sixty dollars from a year earlier, according to JD Power.
- 26:53Don Armstrong: The decline is now the biggest driver of higher monthly payments and a key pressure point for finance offices, according to JD Power.
- 27:00Don Armstrong: March twenty-sixth, eighty-four-month loans accounted for thirteen percent of all new vehicle financing, reflecting how common extended terms have become as affordability pressures persist.
- 27:12Don Armstrong: We've got more coming up on the In-Wheel Time Car Talk Show.
- 27:16Don Armstrong: We're going to uh say goodbye right after these brief messages.
- 27:20Don Armstrong: Your car is a direct reflection of you, so don't be satisfied with color fade or a dingy dull appearance.
- 27:26Don Armstrong: Get rid of those terrible automated car wash scratches.
