- 1:09Speaker 1: This is a podcast called 25 Whistles.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Talking football, and they all wear a whistle.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it's stupid, but what did you expect?
- 1:18Speaker 4: It's a podcast called 25 Whistles. 25 Whistles.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Oh, boy. Who's got it?
- 1:27Speaker 3: No whistle? Mike has it.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Dang.
- 1:30Speaker 1: There we.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Go. God dang. Was that loud?
- 1:36Speaker 1: Yeah, in my ears. I think my volume's up in
- 1:37Speaker 1: my headphones.
- 1:38Speaker 3: A little high.
- 1:39Speaker 1: A couple things. First of all, Mike Ditka passed away.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Just saw that before we started. Mike Ditka, Hall of
- 1:43Speaker 1: Fame tight end and legendary Chicago Bears coach, dies at 86.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Dang.
- 1:47Speaker 1: So if I would have asked you before I read this,
- 1:50Speaker 1: what position did Mike Ditka play? I think I would
- 1:52Speaker 1: have guessed the line, not tight end. Although tight end
- 1:55Speaker 1: really was basically a line position then. Still not the same,
- 1:59Speaker 1: but I would have thought he played offensive or defensive line.
- 2:02Speaker 3: I would have thought defensive end.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Is he not?
- 2:07Speaker 1: Tight end. Oh, so he was a tight end. That's crazy.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Let me read you the headline again that I just read.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Are your cowboy tears blocking your eyes and ears?
- 2:16Speaker 3: And my brain, obviously.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Mike Ditka, Hall of Fame tight end and legendary Chicago
- 2:20Speaker 1: Bears coach, dies at 86.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Wow.
- 2:25Speaker 3: So, the Bears. You know, did you ever meet him?
- 2:31Speaker 1: I don't think so.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Did you? I almost met him, man. Went to his
- 2:34Speaker 3: restaurant in Chicago.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Oh, no, the guy was lying to you. Ditka wasn't
- 2:36Speaker 1: in there.
- 2:37Speaker 3: No, he said I had missed him by five minutes.
- 2:38Speaker 1: He tells everybody that at Ditka's Bar and Grill.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Dude, and that– at his bar, they have this Bloody Mary.
- 2:46Speaker 3: It's called like– I forgot what it was called, but
- 2:48Speaker 3: I got it. And it had a chicken finger in it.
- 2:51Speaker 3: It had– celery, like the shrimp. Dude, it was loaded
- 2:55Speaker 3: with all kinds of things, but it was a drink.
- 2:59Speaker 3: It was like a heart attack in a cup. And
- 3:00Speaker 3: you almost met Ditka, though. No, they said he just
- 3:03Speaker 3: left five minutes before I got there. You know, that's
- 3:04Speaker 3: what they tell every single person. Because I got there
- 3:06Speaker 3: and I sat down and I'm like, hey, does Ditka
- 3:09Speaker 3: ever come in? They're like, oh, dude, you just missed him.
- 3:11Speaker 3: He was here five minutes ago.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Standard line. Hey, Drew, you can sit over here. You
- 3:18Speaker 1: don't have to sit over there. We're just playing musical chairs.
- 3:21Speaker 1: You just said you have this chair is free for anybody.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Who was the linebacker for the Bears that I'm confused? Erlacher?
- 3:29Speaker 3: No, no, no. Old Budkus.
- 3:31Speaker 5: The old dick.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Oh, you can sit there.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I was going to say you can sit in this chair.
- 3:35Speaker 1: That would be even more comfortable. Drew turned a stool
- 3:40Speaker 1: upside down and went sitting on it.
- 3:41Speaker 3: I saw that. It's like pulling up a cooler at
- 3:42Speaker 3: a party, you know? Yeah, you can just have a seat.
- 3:44Speaker 3: You're good. Sit there. Okay.
- 3:46Speaker 1: You want to do the Cowboys?
- 3:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I've watched none of the game. I got to tell you.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I was hosting the Radio Hall of Fame last night.
- 3:53Speaker 1: The game was on Amazon in the evening. So I
- 3:55Speaker 1: pulled up to score at first. It was seven at
- 3:57Speaker 1: the Cowboys. I didn't turn it back on because game over.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Bucs sucked. They hadn't won a game. Cowboys are definitely
- 4:02Speaker 1: moving in the right direction. Great offense.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Game over.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I turned it on after I finished my last part
- 4:07Speaker 1: of my jokes and introductions. And the Cowboys are down eight,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and they have the ball with five minutes left. And
- 4:13Speaker 1: I text Eddie. I go, are the Cowboys not winning?
- 4:17Speaker 1: And he said, no, but we're about to drive and
- 4:18Speaker 1: win this thing.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Come back.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Oh.
- 4:20Speaker 3: I said they're trying to come back and win it.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Talk me through the game. So, yeah, game starts. We're
- 4:25Speaker 3: playing the Bucs. They have a rookie quarterback. They're terrible.
- 4:28Speaker 3: They're 0-3 or whatever, 0-4. Like, it's going to be awesome.
- 4:31Speaker 3: It's going to be great. And sure enough, we get
- 4:33Speaker 3: the ball. Score.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Boom.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Seven points. Let's go, baby. Then, dude, we can't move
- 4:40Speaker 3: the ball offensively. Defensively, we let them do whatever they want. Dude,
- 4:44Speaker 3: we are so bad. Our defense sucks. is so, so bad.
- 4:48Speaker 3: It's trickery. It's like, oh, they're going to run the ball,
- 4:51Speaker 3: and we all go to the run, and then they
- 4:52Speaker 3: pass the ball over our heads.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Again, I watched none. I did see Bucky Irving's stats,
- 4:56Speaker 1: so he was just running the ball.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Running all over us. And this rookie had legs, too.
- 5:00Speaker 3: The fact that he could run really hurt the Cowboys, too. Kevin,
- 5:03Speaker 3: what was your take on the game?
- 5:05Speaker 5: My take is that's the first Cowboys game I've sat
- 5:08Speaker 5: and watched the whole thing, and that defense to Eddie's
- 5:10Speaker 5: point is even worse than I've heard about. They can't tackle.
- 5:14Speaker 5: They can't get to the ball. It was like They
- 5:17Speaker 5: didn't look like they belonged in the same field as
- 5:18Speaker 5: the Bucs. And I was honestly shocked because I've heard
- 5:20Speaker 5: so much about the Cowboys, but that defense was so bad.
- 5:24Speaker 5: It was painful to watch. And I thought about Eddie
- 5:25Speaker 5: so much because I was like, he's probably yelling at
- 5:27Speaker 5: his TV right now.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Well, we lost money too. Yeah. In our skins league,
- 5:30Speaker 1: but nobody cares about that.
- 5:32Speaker 3: No, I wasn't thinking about that.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Why is there a cue next to CeeDee Lamb?
- 5:34Speaker 3: Because he hurt his quad. There's something up with his quad.
- 5:37Speaker 3: He came out like in the third quarter.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Quad bruise.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Okay. It's a bruise. You'll be back. All right. When
- 5:45Speaker 3: I have a bruise, I'm back usually a couple of
- 5:47Speaker 3: days later. Okay.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Well, turf toe doesn't sound bad either, but it is,
- 5:50Speaker 1: but go ahead.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Well, so CDs out, right? Like he, he in the,
- 5:54Speaker 3: somewhere in the third quarter, he's not there. And they're like, Oh,
- 5:56Speaker 3: it looks like CDs, like not playing. He's on the,
- 5:58Speaker 3: he's on the sideline. Sure enough.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Yes.
- 6:00Speaker 3: He had an injury, but they put him back in
- 6:02Speaker 3: a couple of plays. He caught a ball even like
- 6:05Speaker 3: after they said that. So yes, he was dealing with that.
- 6:08Speaker 3: George Pickens was dealing with something in his shoulder. He was,
- 6:11Speaker 3: going through pain. Dude, it was just brutal. Dak wasn't
- 6:14Speaker 3: throwing the ball well, which is rare. Did he throw
- 6:16Speaker 3: a pick at the end of the game? Yeah, but
- 6:18Speaker 3: both those picks weren't his fault. The first pick.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Ferguson was bad, yeah.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Ferguson, that Ferguson was the second pick. That went right
- 6:25Speaker 3: through his hands, hit his helmet, popped up.
- 6:26Speaker 1: So he didn't choke and clutch. No.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Got it.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Well, that stinks for you being a Cowboys fan. It
- 6:31Speaker 1: stinks for me about the future on the Cowboys. It
- 6:33Speaker 1: stinks for our skins team because that's money that we're
- 6:35Speaker 1: going to lose this week.
- 6:36Speaker 3: I know. I couldn't believe it.
- 6:40Speaker 5: Eddie, last thing. Didn't they just seem like Just tired
- 6:43Speaker 5: and sluggish and like they just weren't ready, which is
- 6:46Speaker 5: weird because they weren't even the one that traveled.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Yes, but I mean, I would blame that on Rio.
- 6:52Speaker 3: I think there's still Rio fatigue going from Brazil to
- 6:55Speaker 3: playing in Houston. And then we're playing on Thursday night.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Like NFL really has it against the Cowboys here with
- 7:02Speaker 3: that schedule. So, yeah, to your point, Kevin, yes, there
- 7:06Speaker 3: was fatigue, and I think it's travel fatigue. You go
- 7:08Speaker 3: to South America, come back and play in Houston, and
- 7:11Speaker 3: then play on Thursday.
- 7:12Speaker 1: No, that was two weeks ago.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Doesn't matter.
- 7:13Speaker 1: And also the Bucs, more fatigue. They had a quick turnaround,
- 7:17Speaker 1: quicker turnaround. Oh, where were they? They were in Yugoslavia.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I don't remember the game last week, but they were
- 7:26Speaker 1: saying the Bucs had a quicker turnaround for some reason.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Look, I love football. Love football. I love watching it.
- 7:31Speaker 3: I know a little bit about football. I don't know
- 7:35Speaker 3: the details of football. Like the, like the coaches takes
- 7:39Speaker 3: on football. Like I'm not a coach. I have a true, true,
- 7:42Speaker 3: legit question for you and Kevin. Cause Kevin used to play,
- 7:44Speaker 3: you know, college football, whatever.
- 7:46Speaker 5: I'm an athlete, right?
- 7:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:48Speaker 3: He's an athlete. If the Cowboys look spectacular in a
- 7:53Speaker 3: hurry up offense, every single week, they can't be stopped.
- 7:58Speaker 3: If it's hurry up, no huddle, whatever. We're moving down
- 8:01Speaker 3: the field fast. Their success, we score a touchdown. Why
- 8:04Speaker 3: can't they play like that the whole game?
- 8:05Speaker 1: This would be my answer. Two parts. One, just generally
- 8:10Speaker 1: hurry up offenses result in really exhausted defenses. And if
- 8:15Speaker 1: your defense already sucks, they're going to be even more gassed.
- 8:19Speaker 1: So that's number one. But you'll weigh it and you'll go,
- 8:23Speaker 1: all right, we're going to go hurry up and hopefully
- 8:25Speaker 1: we can score more points than our defense is tired.
- 8:29Speaker 1: But if your offense is actually really good, let's say
- 8:31Speaker 1: hurry up is great. but your offense in standard, we'll
- 8:34Speaker 1: just call it standard, is really good. If your offense
- 8:36Speaker 1: is already really good, it's not worth it for just
- 8:39Speaker 1: a nod. You can be really good and win the
- 8:41Speaker 1: game with your defense not being so gassed. And if
- 8:44Speaker 1: your offense is terrible in the hurry up, you're actually great,
- 8:47Speaker 1: you'll do that. Because you're not going to score because
- 8:49Speaker 1: your offense is terrible. But Dallas' offense is really good.
- 8:52Speaker 3: You say that, but then we play standard.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Last night.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Well, even against the Texans. We play standard football offense.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Our success rate is probably 50-60%. If it's hurry-up offense,
- 9:05Speaker 3: we're at 90%.
- 9:07Speaker 1: They drive the ball down the field. The sample size
- 9:09Speaker 1: is so much smaller with hurry-up. And the defense is
- 9:11Speaker 1: so bad. And if you play hurry-up, the defense spends
- 9:13Speaker 1: a lot more time on the field. When you're playing offense,
- 9:16Speaker 1: that's when the defense rests.
- 9:18Speaker 3: I get it. No, that makes a lot of sense.
- 9:20Speaker 3: That makes a lot of sense. But if our defense
- 9:22Speaker 3: sucks already, who cares then? Don't let them rest.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Hurry up.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Hurry, hurry, hurry.
- 9:26Speaker 1: And that is something to weigh. And I think if
- 9:30Speaker 1: the hurry up, let's say the 30% that you said.
- 9:32Speaker 1: You're just making up stats. Oh, yeah, for sure.
- 9:34Speaker 3: 50%. I think I said 90%. Well, 50% we'll.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Call it standard that they normally run. Standard clock offense.
- 9:43Speaker 1: And it's 90. You're weighing that 40%. So that's the 40%
- 9:48Speaker 1: that you're better on offense. Is it going to affect
- 9:51Speaker 1: your defense more than 40%? And if it is, you're
- 9:53Speaker 1: not going to do it because then you're losing. Your
- 9:55Speaker 1: net gain is going to be, if you're doing just
- 9:57Speaker 1: straight analytics. But it's mostly about defense. That's why it's
- 9:59Speaker 1: hard for these college offenses that run hurry up all
- 10:02Speaker 1: the time. Yes. Their defense players get hurt all the time.
- 10:06Speaker 1: And their defenses are exhausted. And if you do that,
- 10:09Speaker 1: you almost have to have great depth because your defense
- 10:12Speaker 1: is out there all the time. We have no defensive depth.
- 10:16Speaker 1: And that's my other question. Where are these players coming from?
- 10:19Speaker 1: We're losing our– honestly, I don't think we have a defense.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Practice squad, free agents, they didn't make a team. Are
- 10:24Speaker 1: we pulling people off the couch? Well, you did trade
- 10:27Speaker 1: for somebody. You did make a pretty good defensive back trade.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Yeah, and guess what? He was sick. He didn't play.
- 10:32Speaker 3: No way. Yeah, he was throwing up before the game.
- 10:35Speaker 3: So they sent him home. There was video of him
- 10:37Speaker 3: with his backpack, like, I'm going home. No way.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I didn't know that. I saw none of this.
- 10:42Speaker 3: What are we doing?
- 10:43Speaker 1: He took a sick day? Yes.
- 10:45Speaker 3: But I knew it was legit, though, because the guy
- 10:47Speaker 3: behind him had a trash can. Like, following him with
- 10:50Speaker 3: a trash can in case he throws up again. That sucks.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, it was bad. I'm sorry that happened to you.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I'm sorry that happened to us. Do we put the
- 10:58Speaker 1: Cowboys spread in the batting segment we do coming up, Kevin?
- 11:02Speaker 4: Yes.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Okay, you leave it in.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Okay.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Because I think Eddie goes on a thing where the
- 11:08Speaker 1: Cowboys are going to win again. We recorded that yesterday.
- 11:11Speaker 3: And it was nine and a half?
- 11:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:13Speaker 3: I bet it. Don't worry.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I bet the over and it didn't hit.
- 11:16Speaker 3: But leave it in.
- 11:16Speaker 1: And for everybody that's like, wait, the Cowboys game already happened.
- 11:19Speaker 1: We didn't realize it was a Thursday night game when
- 11:20Speaker 1: we recorded it because we recorded that segment on Wednesday afternoon.
- 11:24Speaker 1: And not only that, leave in. Leave in us suffering,
- 11:28Speaker 1: not knowing we're about to suffer. And we thought we
- 11:30Speaker 1: were really going to win it.
- 11:31Speaker 3: You thought.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Yeah. I did think they'd win, though.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Yes, of course. Broken down.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Backup quarterbacks. Terrible team. Offensive line. Awful.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Hey, that guy did well, though, man. He played well.
- 11:41Speaker 1: He did.
- 11:41Speaker 3: It looked like he was having the time of his life. Like,
- 11:44Speaker 3: good for him. And then I confuse my kids because
- 11:48Speaker 3: somewhere in the middle, I'm like, hey, Bucky Irvin, just score, dude. Cowboys,
- 11:52Speaker 3: just let him score. Hey, you know what? Let's get
- 11:54Speaker 3: beat by 60. Let him score. And my kids are
- 11:56Speaker 3: looking at me like, what is dad saying? Why would
- 11:58Speaker 3: you want to get beat by 60? Because I'm like,
- 12:00Speaker 3: if you guys are going to lose, hey, be good
- 12:01Speaker 3: at losing then, dude. Let them win by 60. If
- 12:04Speaker 3: you're just going to let them run all over you,
- 12:06Speaker 3: do it the right way. I don't understand that logic,
- 12:08Speaker 3: but I know.
- 12:09Speaker 1: I could understand the really stupid logic of let them
- 12:12Speaker 1: score and score seven, and we'll go for eight every
- 12:14Speaker 1: time immediately.
- 12:15Speaker 3: I was just being stupid, and my kids are like,
- 12:17Speaker 3: I don't understand what's going on with Dad. Like, he's
- 12:19Speaker 3: rooting for the Bucs now.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:24Speaker 3: I wasn't rooting for the Bucs. Hey, Kevin.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Yeah. Has Eddie been to your house?
- 12:30Speaker 5: No, not my new house.
- 12:31Speaker 1: No. Well, I think he's irritated that we haven't been invited.
- 12:35Speaker 4: To my new house?
- 12:37Speaker 5: The one I just moved into a week ago?
- 12:39Speaker 4: Yep.
- 12:41Speaker 5: You want to come over to a house that's just
- 12:43Speaker 5: got boxes everywhere, living out of suitcases and boxes? Is
- 12:46Speaker 5: that what you want to come over to?
- 12:47Speaker 3: Well, not necessarily, but I mean, there's been no talks
- 12:50Speaker 3: of a housewarming party. Like, hey, we're going to, once
- 12:53Speaker 3: I get it all set up and then we fire
- 12:54Speaker 3: up the grill, you guys come over.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Nothing. Nothing.
- 12:57Speaker 5: Well, last time I invited you to something, you never
- 13:00Speaker 5: even RSVP'd and then I asked you, or I talked
- 13:02Speaker 5: about it the next week and you're like, what? And
- 13:03Speaker 5: I was like, yeah, I sent you the invite. It
- 13:05Speaker 5: was my kid's first birthday. Remember that? At my old house?
- 13:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I remember, but I wasn't able to go, Kevin.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Like one invite and now I'm just banned?
- 13:11Speaker 5: You never even said anything though. And then I was like, well,
- 13:14Speaker 5: he's just too busy. Like you just got the four
- 13:16Speaker 5: kids and I know it's a legit reason it can be,
- 13:19Speaker 5: but I think it's also just an excuse for everything
- 13:21Speaker 5: where you can just get out of everything. So it's like,
- 13:23Speaker 5: why even ask when I know it's going to be no?
- 13:26Speaker 1: I have an excuse now, finally.
- 13:27Speaker 3: You have a kid?
- 13:28Speaker 1: Yeah, because usually I just wouldn't care, and I don't
- 13:30Speaker 1: need an excuse. No, thank you. But now I have
- 13:32Speaker 1: an excuse. Baby. Got a baby. Nap time. Got to nap.
- 13:37Speaker 1: It is a really good excuse. The greatest excuse was
- 13:39Speaker 1: my wife was pregnant. Yeah? Yes. That was even better
- 13:42Speaker 1: than a baby, because you can take a baby somewhere.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Hey, but it gets better, too. You'll have other things
- 13:47Speaker 3: as she gets older. Games, school.
- 13:50Speaker 1: I wouldn't tell my wife sometimes that we'd be invited
- 13:52Speaker 1: to stuff and I used her as an excuse and
- 13:53Speaker 1: they'd hit her up and ask her something. And she's like, no,
- 13:56Speaker 1: that's not true. You always cover the lie of your partner.
- 13:59Speaker 1: You have to like, why didn't know you lied? How
- 14:01Speaker 1: am I supposed to cover you? If I don't know,
- 14:04Speaker 1: my wife just goes with it. Like she just goes
- 14:07Speaker 1: with it. Like, uh, yeah, that doesn't make a lot
- 14:08Speaker 1: of sense, but yeah, sure. Yeah. Is she going to
- 14:10Speaker 1: let you put the flag up in your house outside
- 14:12Speaker 1: your house?
- 14:12Speaker 3: No, she's already made it. She's already said, no, I
- 14:15Speaker 3: want to put a Cowboys flag in my front, like
- 14:17Speaker 3: right by the door. She said no. And then I
- 14:19Speaker 3: was like, what about the little ones? Kevin said he
- 14:22Speaker 3: had a little Patriots Red Sox one that you stick
- 14:25Speaker 3: in the ground. She's like, no, we're not having any
- 14:26Speaker 3: of those.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Dang.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Or like a little gnome you could put out there
- 14:30Speaker 1: during the game that's a Cowboys gnome.
- 14:32Speaker 3: That's legit. A gnome would be cool. But it sounds
- 14:36Speaker 3: like she doesn't want any kind of football representation in
- 14:40Speaker 3: the front of our house to be advertised. I got
- 14:43Speaker 3: another warning message from DraftKings. What's the warning?
- 14:47Speaker 1: Warning, you've lost a lot. Do you want to see
- 14:49Speaker 1: your stats?
- 14:50Speaker 3: Oh, no.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Do you want to build in boundaries? That's the worst, dude. Yeah.
- 14:56Speaker 3: They're trying to do what they call intervention with you.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:00Speaker 5: You had to pull a read and call the.
- 15:02Speaker 4: Hotline on yourself?
- 15:03Speaker 1: No, because I'm fine.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Yes, we're fine.
- 15:06Speaker 1: No, not we.
- 15:06Speaker 3: You have a problem.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I bet for fun. I just bet a little more,
- 15:11Speaker 1: and I've had a bad couple weeks.
- 15:14Speaker 3: I mean, real bad. All football? All football.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Two out of three weeks, but the sandwich, the middle
- 15:19Speaker 1: was good when I used all the AI. But I
- 15:23Speaker 1: had like a nine-game losing streak, and then I just lost.
- 15:25Speaker 3: A lot last week. And you do just football, right?
- 15:28Speaker 1: Yeah, because I'm not searching for something to bet for.
- 15:31Speaker 3: You're not touching baseball at all?
- 15:33Speaker 4: No.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Dude, I lost so big on the Yankees and the Braves, like,
- 15:39Speaker 3: Remember the days when it was best of five and
- 15:42Speaker 3: they went all the way to five? Remember the days
- 15:44Speaker 3: they would rig the games so we could have all
- 15:47Speaker 3: the five games and this whole process took forever? Well,
- 15:49Speaker 3: that doesn't happen anymore. Why do you think that is?
- 15:53Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Do you know there's a football game happening right now
- 15:56Speaker 1: as we record this?
- 15:57Speaker 3: Shut up.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Who?
- 15:58Speaker 1: What?
- 15:58Speaker 3: Let me pull up DraftKings.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Florida A & M and Alabama State. It looks like
- 16:02Speaker 1: we're playing right now.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Oh, dude. I bet on those teams.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Because I think it's the hurricane coming through.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Oh, get it out of the way?
- 16:08Speaker 1: Yeah, unless it's really not happening right now, but it
- 16:12Speaker 1: says 0-0, there's a red dot, and it's blinking.
- 16:16Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, it is.
- 16:17Speaker 1: So is that a hurricane game? If they're playing Alabama State,
- 16:20Speaker 1: it has to be.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Alabama, yeah.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Oh, interesting. Eddie's pulling up his account.
- 16:25Speaker 5: He's ready.
- 16:26Speaker 3: $ 5, done.

- 18:19Speaker 1: On with us now, one of my favorite writers and
- 18:22Speaker 1: really one of the most respected NFL writers and storytellers
- 18:24Speaker 1: of all time. A three-time National Sports Writer of the Year.
- 18:28Speaker 1: who spent more than four decades covering the league from
- 18:30Speaker 1: the inside. And he's got a new book called The Game,
- 18:33Speaker 1: which comes out October 13th. And I'm assuming you can
- 18:36Speaker 1: pre-order because I know how important that is. So I
- 18:38Speaker 1: would encourage you if you're entertained by this segment with Peter,
- 18:41Speaker 1: pre-order the book. And it's all about the modern NFL
- 18:44Speaker 1: through people and moments. And the great Peter King is
- 18:47Speaker 1: on now. And Peter, if you don't mind, I've really
- 18:49Speaker 1: heard some great stories about John Madden, but I know
- 18:52Speaker 1: you spent some time with John. Like, what can you
- 18:54Speaker 1: tell us about John Madden?
- 18:56Speaker 4: Well, Bobby... John was exactly what he seems to be
- 19:03Speaker 4: on TV, is who he was for three days on
- 19:07Speaker 4: a bus from Pleasanton, California to New York City. And
- 19:13Speaker 4: he's just probably a little bit less excitable, but he's
- 19:19Speaker 4: the same person. Genuinely curious. We stopped. the bus, we
- 19:26Speaker 4: drove on I-80 from Pleasanton all the way, never got
- 19:29Speaker 4: off I-80, I don't think, from Pleasanton to the Dakota,
- 19:36Speaker 4: to his apartment right off the George Washington Bridge in
- 19:39Speaker 4: New York City. But we stopped in a little town
- 19:45Speaker 4: outside of Kearney, Nebraska, because John Madden saw these brilliant
- 19:50Speaker 4: red wildflowers on a gorgeous October hot afternoon in Nebraska,
- 19:58Speaker 4: right off I-80. And he told the driver, Dave Hahn, stop,
- 20:01Speaker 4: pull over. So he looked in a drawer on the
- 20:06Speaker 4: bus and found this book called, I think it was
- 20:09Speaker 4: called Wildflowers Across America. And he got off the bus
- 20:13Speaker 4: and he's flipping through the book and he basically finds
- 20:18Speaker 4: what he's looking for. He sees these brilliant red, bright
- 20:23Speaker 4: red wildflowers in his book, spotted knapweed. And he was so,
- 20:28Speaker 4: he was triumphant. It was like he Just had a
- 20:32Speaker 4: big play against the Steelers or something. And I said
- 20:40Speaker 4: to him, he said, look, spotted knapweed. And I said, John,
- 20:44Speaker 4: I am going to spoil your secret. I'm going to
- 20:47Speaker 4: tell everybody in the NFL that I drove across the
- 20:50Speaker 4: United States with you and you pulled over because you
- 20:53Speaker 4: wanted to identify what wildflowers you saw on a hill
- 20:59Speaker 4: in Nebraska.
- 21:00Speaker 3: He said, good.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Go ahead. Tell people. I don't care. And he kind
- 21:04Speaker 4: of thought I was serious, but obviously I wasn't. But
- 21:09Speaker 4: he's a curious human being. Just that's what he was.
- 21:14Speaker 4: That's why, you know, Bobby, in my opinion, I think
- 21:19Speaker 4: that like in this job, like if you weren't curious
- 21:24Speaker 4: really about your business and about and about football or whatever,
- 21:30Speaker 4: you know, If you were not curious, you wouldn't be
- 21:34Speaker 4: very good at your job. I wasn't very good at
- 21:37Speaker 4: my job if I wasn't curious. And Madden had this
- 21:41Speaker 4: curiosity gene about everything that I just thought was the
- 21:45Speaker 4: coolest thing. I really enjoyed that time with him because
- 21:50Speaker 4: it just taught me that no matter what you actually do,
- 21:57Speaker 4: I think you as a human being, a lot of
- 22:01Speaker 4: other things matter. And I think one of the things
- 22:04Speaker 4: he liked to do is see the United States. And
- 22:08Speaker 4: one of the things he told me is that, hey, listen,
- 22:11Speaker 4: everybody who runs for national office ought to do this
- 22:15Speaker 4: because you just fly over everything. You don't get to
- 22:18Speaker 4: know people. You don't get to meet people. We had
- 22:20Speaker 4: just left grandpa's steakhouse in Kearney, Nebraska. And And he goes,
- 22:26Speaker 4: that was great. I know the waitresses in there. I
- 22:29Speaker 4: know the owner. I know there's a bunch of people
- 22:32Speaker 4: who I've talked to over the years. It's great. You
- 22:35Speaker 4: really find out what people are like. So that's the
- 22:38Speaker 4: one thing I learned about Madden. He's real.
- 22:40Speaker 1: There's a picture behind you right now as we talk
- 22:42Speaker 1: to you of you and Tom Brady sitting in a locker.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Do you have any great Tom Brady stories in the
- 22:47Speaker 1: book that you go into?
- 22:48Speaker 4: Oh, I got a few of them, but probably the
- 22:53Speaker 4: one that one that I think is significant about Brady
- 22:59Speaker 4: and kind of who he was is the story about
- 23:04Speaker 4: after he won the super bowl in, um, in Tampa and,
- 23:09Speaker 4: you know, he's out until whatever, maybe he hadn't even
- 23:12Speaker 4: been to bed yet. And his quarterback coach and his
- 23:15Speaker 4: confidant on the staff was a guy named Clyde Christensen.
- 23:19Speaker 4: It's a long time NFL coach. And, and, um, and Brady, uh,
- 23:24Speaker 4: um christiansen had been to whatever time he went to
- 23:28Speaker 4: bed four or five o'clock um at one point his
- 23:32Speaker 4: phone is ringing and he looks over it's like eight
- 23:36Speaker 4: o'clock ten after eight something like that and he says
- 23:38Speaker 4: man who would be calling he looks over and he
- 23:41Speaker 4: says oh my god it's brady and i don't think
- 23:44Speaker 4: he would have picked up many phone calls but he
- 23:46Speaker 4: picked up the one from brady and And it's Brady
- 23:49Speaker 4: yelling into the phone about how I'm going to be
- 23:51Speaker 4: even better next year, Clyde. We're going to have a
- 23:53Speaker 4: great year. Come on, we got to do it again.
- 23:55Speaker 4: And that's just, that's maybe, unfortunately for Gisele Bundchen, you know,
- 24:03Speaker 4: that's who Tom Brady was because, you know, football was
- 24:08Speaker 4: a pretty damn important thing to him as he showed
- 24:12Speaker 4: day after day after day.
- 24:14Speaker 1: There's a picture above that as I'm looking over your
- 24:15Speaker 1: shoulder of you and Patrick Mahomes. Did you have a
- 24:17Speaker 1: chance to spend any time with Patrick before he was
- 24:19Speaker 1: the Patrick Mahomes we know now?
- 24:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I remember I covered the second start of his
- 24:27Speaker 4: first year starting in 2018. Remember, Mahomes was an absolute
- 24:34Speaker 4: sensation right away. He opened his career at the Chargers
- 24:41Speaker 4: and at Pittsburgh, and he put up 80 points in
- 24:44Speaker 4: his first two weeks. And I remember those days just
- 24:51Speaker 4: thinking to myself, this guy's different because he was not exalting.
- 24:56Speaker 4: He was not feeling like he had arrived. I remember
- 25:00Speaker 4: talking to his dad after that Pittsburgh game about how much,
- 25:06Speaker 4: you know, this is not even remotely a surprise. And Bobby,
- 25:10Speaker 4: I have a chapter in my book about the perfect
- 25:14Speaker 4: coach quarterback relationship because I believe that one of the
- 25:18Speaker 4: points I wanted to get across is there is absolutely
- 25:22Speaker 4: no doubt, there's no question, you can't even argue it,
- 25:26Speaker 4: that the two most important people in any football franchise
- 25:30Speaker 4: are the coach and the quarterback in some order. And
- 25:33Speaker 4: I thought Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes had the perfect relationship,
- 25:37Speaker 4: so much so that I went to see him in
- 25:39Speaker 4: training camp before the 25 season It was a day
- 25:43Speaker 4: in St. Joseph, Missouri, where it was probably 98 degrees,
- 25:48Speaker 4: so humid. There wasn't a cloud between Kansas City and Manitoba.
- 25:53Speaker 4: It was just baking. And they were at the end
- 25:56Speaker 4: of like a 16-play drive in the training camp practice.
- 26:01Speaker 4: And Mahomes is barking out the signals at the line.
- 26:04Speaker 4: These are important times to Andy Reid because he wants
- 26:07Speaker 4: to build a tough team And a team that doesn't
- 26:11Speaker 4: get fatigued at the end of long drives. So they
- 26:15Speaker 4: were out there and Mahomes is barking out the signals.
- 26:18Speaker 4: And at one point he looks over and Rasheed Rice
- 26:22Speaker 4: is kneeling on the ground, puking his guts out. And
- 26:26Speaker 4: Mahomes doesn't say, hey, Rasheed, you okay? Or he doesn't
- 26:30Speaker 4: stop and walk over to him. He basically cups his
- 26:34Speaker 4: hands and he yells, get another guy. And that is
- 26:41Speaker 4: who Mahomes is. You know, I'll worry about Rasheed Rice
- 26:45Speaker 4: at the end of the play. Right now, we got
- 26:47Speaker 4: to play to get off. And if you're not going
- 26:49Speaker 4: to be involved, if you're not going to be one
- 26:51Speaker 4: of the 11, get out. You know, what else would
- 26:55Speaker 4: a coach want other than a player who treats football
- 26:58Speaker 4: like that?
- 26:59Speaker 1: Knowing those guys, both Andy and Patrick, do you feel
- 27:02Speaker 1: like there's a little more in the tank for those
- 27:03Speaker 1: guys moving forward?
- 27:05Speaker 4: Definitely so. I mean, Mahomes is... What is he, 30, 31?
- 27:09Speaker 4: I don't even know what he is. But Mahomes is
- 27:13Speaker 4: the heir to Brady. And I'm not saying that he's
- 27:16Speaker 4: better than Josh Allen right now. I'm not saying he
- 27:20Speaker 4: throws a prettier football than Joe Burrow necessarily. But he just,
- 27:26Speaker 4: he has this will and he has this hold on
- 27:32Speaker 4: his team, on his locker room. He has this oneness.
- 27:39Speaker 4: with not just Reed, but with the entire coaching staff,
- 27:44Speaker 4: he has the implicit trust that you have to have
- 27:49Speaker 4: in the guy who leads your franchise. And I think
- 27:54Speaker 4: he's the heir to Brady as the next long-term great guy,
- 28:00Speaker 4: and he has plenty left. Now, how much will Andy
- 28:03Speaker 4: Reed go? I don't know. I don't have any idea.
- 28:07Speaker 4: I don't think he's not going to coach Mahomes every
- 28:09Speaker 4: year the rest of his career. But Andy has told me,
- 28:14Speaker 4: he said, you know, I'd be in that in the
- 28:17Speaker 4: big blue chair by now, the Kenny Chesney song, which
- 28:20Speaker 4: I didn't even know when he told me this. But
- 28:23Speaker 4: he said I'd be in the big blue chair if
- 28:25Speaker 4: it wasn't for that guy. So, you know, obviously, Patrick
- 28:30Speaker 4: Mahomes is the rising tide that lifts all boats.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Somebody that I loved growing up watching and then also
- 28:36Speaker 1: I've gotten to know a little bit later in life
- 28:38Speaker 1: is Steve Young. Did you get to spend any time
- 28:40Speaker 1: with Steve as he was a player, you know, either
- 28:43Speaker 1: during or post the Montana situation?
- 28:46Speaker 4: I mean, I covered Steve Young, I believe, more than
- 28:49Speaker 4: any national media person in his career. And I saw
- 28:55Speaker 4: it all. You know, the most memorable day I covered
- 28:59Speaker 4: Steve Young was was when he threw six touchdown passes
- 29:03Speaker 4: in the Super Bowl to beat the Chargers. And going
- 29:06Speaker 4: into that game, Mike Shanahan told Steve Young, we're going
- 29:11Speaker 4: to throw eight touchdown passes today. And Young thought he
- 29:14Speaker 4: was out of his mind. But just think, and at halftime,
- 29:18Speaker 4: Young had four. And Shanahan came by his locker in Miami,
- 29:23Speaker 4: and he held up four fingers. Like, okay, we got four,
- 29:25Speaker 4: we got four more to go. If the Chargers had
- 29:29Speaker 4: been a more competitive offensive team in that game, I
- 29:33Speaker 4: think there's a very good chance Steve Young would have
- 29:35Speaker 4: thrown eight. Here's the reason. Because he threw his last... one,
- 29:40Speaker 4: he threw six, and he threw his last one with
- 29:42Speaker 4: like 14 minutes left in the game. And at that point,
- 29:45Speaker 4: George Seifert, the head coach, called off the dogs. And
- 29:49Speaker 4: if he hadn't called off the dogs, Shanahan had every
- 29:52Speaker 4: intention in their last two or three series of playing
- 29:55Speaker 4: bombs away and continuing to strafe the very weak at
- 30:02Speaker 4: the time Chargers defense. But, you know, because the margin
- 30:06Speaker 4: was so big, I think George Seifert didn't want to
- 30:08Speaker 4: rub their noses in it. But after that game, my
- 30:11Speaker 4: assignment for Sports Illustrated was to follow Steve Young around
- 30:16Speaker 4: and then go back to his hotel with him if
- 30:19Speaker 4: he'd allow me. And he did because I knew him
- 30:20Speaker 4: pretty well. So I ended up, he was so thirsty,
- 30:25Speaker 4: dehydrated in the Florida heat and humidity that night And
- 30:29Speaker 4: he looked at me, he did like an hour and
- 30:32Speaker 4: a half, two hours of interviews on the field after
- 30:34Speaker 4: the game. And he looked at me, can you find
- 30:36Speaker 4: me anything to drink? And I went underneath the stands
- 30:39Speaker 4: and they were clearing out some of the luxury boxes
- 30:42Speaker 4: at that point. And I gave some guy 20 bucks
- 30:45Speaker 4: and I took three Gatorades and like five sugar cookies
- 30:49Speaker 4: and I brought them back to Steve. He drank the
- 30:52Speaker 4: three Gatorades in two minutes and And by the time
- 30:57Speaker 4: we got in the car to go back to his hotel,
- 31:00Speaker 4: he wasn't looking really good. And just as we left
- 31:02Speaker 4: the parking lot, he pukes a red torrent of puke
- 31:08Speaker 4: all over the back of this limo. Half of it
- 31:11Speaker 4: goes on Lee Steinberg's shoes, his agent. And he says, well,
- 31:15Speaker 4: never wash these shoes again. And when we got back
- 31:19Speaker 4: to the hotel, he had like a junior suite in
- 31:22Speaker 4: the 49ers hotel room. And he was so dehydrated, he
- 31:26Speaker 4: was virtually catatonic. And he was laying on the bed.
- 31:30Speaker 4: The Miami-Dade fire rescue came up into his room. And
- 31:35Speaker 4: they didn't put one IV of saline in him. They
- 31:39Speaker 4: put two lines of IV in him. And he sat
- 31:44Speaker 4: there entertaining like 40 people in the room, relatives, friends,
- 31:48Speaker 4: former teammates from Brigham Young. And, you know, just had
- 31:53Speaker 4: the time of his life. At one point, he just
- 31:54Speaker 4: looks up and he goes, he said, what an unbelievable day.
- 32:01Speaker 4: I never threw six touchdown passes as a kid in Connecticut.
- 32:06Speaker 4: I never threw six in high school, never threw six
- 32:09Speaker 4: in college, never threw six, obviously, in the NFL. And
- 32:12Speaker 4: I did it in the biggest game of my life.
- 32:14Speaker 4: How incredible is that? He was just, even though he
- 32:18Speaker 4: was weak, As a kitten at that time, he was
- 32:22Speaker 4: just so happy, as happy as I've ever seen a
- 32:27Speaker 4: human being after winning the Super Bowl.
- 32:29Speaker 3: What a great story.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Do you find that it's harder now to get access
- 32:33Speaker 1: to players because of how controlling the team or the
- 32:36Speaker 1: league is as opposed to 25, 30 years ago?
- 32:39Speaker 4: Of course. I mean, you know, I'm the luckiest man
- 32:44Speaker 4: on the face of the earth because I came along
- 32:48Speaker 4: In 1989, when I got to Sports Illustrated, it was
- 32:51Speaker 4: a big, big deal. If you were in a Sports
- 32:55Speaker 4: Illustrated game, that was a big deal. And so I
- 32:59Speaker 4: just feel like today, you know, I got I was
- 33:04Speaker 4: in my last few years. I first met Andy Reid
- 33:08Speaker 4: when he was a tight ends coach with the Packers
- 33:10Speaker 4: in 1995. And we talked about how much I mean,
- 33:14Speaker 4: Andy Reid, when he was growing up, When he was
- 33:18Speaker 4: playing tackle at Brigham Young and protecting Jim McMahon's blind side,
- 33:23Speaker 4: McMahon's senior year, he was also at times writing for
- 33:27Speaker 4: the school paper at Brigham Young. He wanted to be
- 33:29Speaker 4: a football writer. He wanted to be Paul Zimmerman at
- 33:32Speaker 4: Sports Illustrated. But he got into this other walk of life.
- 33:36Speaker 4: It's a moderate success, wouldn't you say? And so over
- 33:41Speaker 4: the years, I think one of the reasons why Andy
- 33:45Speaker 4: Reid kind of treated me really in a welcoming manner
- 33:51Speaker 4: is because that's the job he wanted to do. And
- 33:54Speaker 4: so he knew when I was asking really intrusive questions
- 34:00Speaker 4: and I asked him, you know, after two jet chip
- 34:03Speaker 4: wasp that, you know, was the key play that beat
- 34:06Speaker 4: the 49ers in that Super Bowl coming back from the
- 34:09Speaker 4: big fourth quarter deficit. He drew that play out for
- 34:13Speaker 4: me alone in his office after the game and described
- 34:16Speaker 4: it in intricate detail. And, you know, the last column
- 34:21Speaker 4: I ever wrote off a Super Bowl was in Vegas,
- 34:25Speaker 4: you know, another winning Super Bowl for the Chiefs. And
- 34:32Speaker 4: Andy talked to me for 13 minutes alone in his office,
- 34:35Speaker 4: telling me everything about the winning play and his attitude
- 34:39Speaker 4: and all that other stuff. And I think it's really
- 34:42Speaker 4: because I knew Andy Reid at a different time. And
- 34:49Speaker 4: had I gotten to know Andy Reid in 2018, he
- 34:52Speaker 4: would have been a nice fellow, but he wouldn't be
- 34:54Speaker 4: spending 13 minutes with me in a locked office after
- 34:57Speaker 4: the Super Bowl. I can tell you that much.
- 34:59Speaker 1: I have two final questions for you. By the way, guys,
- 35:02Speaker 1: go pre-order the book, The Game. It comes out October 13th.
- 35:04Speaker 1: So next week, pre-order it or just set a calendar
- 35:08Speaker 1: reminder to order the book. When you decided to write
- 35:11Speaker 1: the book, were there a couple stories that were just
- 35:13Speaker 1: fundamentally what the book was based around? Like ones you
- 35:16Speaker 1: really wanted to get out there and then you built
- 35:17Speaker 1: out afterward?
- 35:18Speaker 4: No, because there were so many stories. I wanted to
- 35:22Speaker 4: take one story from every year that I covered the
- 35:26Speaker 4: league from 84 to 23. And I wanted to do
- 35:29Speaker 4: one story from every year and just really amplify it
- 35:32Speaker 4: and go back when possible and re-report it. But There
- 35:37Speaker 4: are a couple of stories that, as it turned out,
- 35:40Speaker 4: I was so happy that I did this book because
- 35:43Speaker 4: Paul Tagliabue, just four or five months before his death,
- 35:49Speaker 4: told me how he really felt about the 2001 season
- 35:54Speaker 4: when he had to cancel the games after the Twin
- 35:58Speaker 4: Towers fell in the terrorist attack. I mean, I saw
- 36:02Speaker 4: him five days after the terrorist attack. And he was,
- 36:07Speaker 4: he cried in his office that day. And Paul Tagliabue,
- 36:11Speaker 4: if you know his reputation, he is the ultimate solid
- 36:14Speaker 4: rock of a guy and not an emotional guy. And
- 36:19Speaker 4: I always wondered, geez, why did he cry? And one
- 36:21Speaker 4: of the reasons he cried is that he feared there
- 36:24Speaker 4: was going to be another attack on the United States
- 36:27Speaker 4: and feared it because of some of the work he
- 36:30Speaker 4: had done when he got out of Georgetown Law School.
- 36:32Speaker 4: Deep down, one of the things he feared was the
- 36:35Speaker 4: possibility of a nuclear attack by an enemy power, an
- 36:40Speaker 4: enemy of the United States. And he didn't know what
- 36:42Speaker 4: was coming, but that's one of the things he feared.
- 36:45Speaker 4: That and a few of the other stories. I think
- 36:48Speaker 4: one of the stories that people will really enjoy is
- 36:51Speaker 4: the Nick Foles story, How in the World. I mean,
- 36:55Speaker 4: if you told me that Tom Brady was going to
- 36:59Speaker 4: throw for 505 yards in a Super Bowl and Bill
- 37:02Speaker 4: Belichick was going to be facing a fairly neophyte quarterback
- 37:06Speaker 4: in Nick Foles. I mean, the Patriots wouldn't have been
- 37:10Speaker 4: favored by whatever, four and a half. They would have
- 37:12Speaker 4: been favored by 24 and a half. And just the
- 37:17Speaker 4: real inside story of how Nick Foles and Doug Peterson
- 37:20Speaker 4: made that happen. Totally fascinating to me.
- 37:24Speaker 1: My final question, because again, you've seen it all and
- 37:26Speaker 1: you mentioned Josh Allen earlier. Of all the years you've
- 37:29Speaker 1: spent close to the league, what's the closest thing you've
- 37:32Speaker 1: seen to Josh Allen and how he plays quarterback?
- 37:35Speaker 4: Oh, I would say, you know, I think he's really
- 37:39Speaker 4: a unique player because nobody ever has mastered, you know,
- 37:46Speaker 4: sort of the quarterback sneak and the ability to get
- 37:49Speaker 4: short yardage as a quarterback the way he has. But
- 37:54Speaker 4: it isn't only that. He can run in the open field.
- 37:58Speaker 4: And he is a freight train rolling down the tracks.
- 38:02Speaker 4: So I, I think the closest guy is not anywhere
- 38:06Speaker 4: really near him, but Josh Allen's got an incredible arm.
- 38:10Speaker 4: The guy who, and you know, you love to see
- 38:13Speaker 4: what would have happened and he not gotten in trouble
- 38:16Speaker 4: is I've always thought that Michael Vick could have had
- 38:19Speaker 4: that kind of impact career. If two things, obviously, if
- 38:25Speaker 4: he wasn't involved in the dog fighting and, if he
- 38:28Speaker 4: was more serious about football than he was because Vic
- 38:32Speaker 4: was probably not as, he was definitely not as serious
- 38:38Speaker 4: about the game as he should have been. He spent
- 38:40Speaker 4: a lot of time doing off field stuff that, and
- 38:44Speaker 4: I'm sure Josh Allen does too, but just like Mahomes,
- 38:48Speaker 4: you know, and, and, and Brady and, and even a
- 38:52Speaker 4: guy who's not nearly as successful, a guy like Gino Smith, they,
- 38:55Speaker 4: I mean, Those guys live, breathe and eat it. And,
- 38:59Speaker 4: you know, Dak does, too. But I just think that
- 39:05Speaker 4: if Vic had been more serious, I think he would
- 39:08Speaker 4: have been a phenomenon the way that Josh Allen is
- 39:11Speaker 4: looking like he's going to be. We're not we're only
- 39:13Speaker 4: halfway through his career, maybe, maybe even only 40 percent
- 39:17Speaker 4: of the way through his career. But I you know,
- 39:20Speaker 4: he's he's in he is he's an adventure story every
- 39:25Speaker 4: every game.
- 39:26Speaker 1: The book cover is really awesome. I mean, it looks
- 39:27Speaker 1: like a football. That's true. I'm looking at it over
- 39:29Speaker 1: your shoulder.
- 39:30Speaker 4: It does, yeah.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Yeah, great design. Great job. Super excited for the book. Again,
- 39:33Speaker 1: it's called The Game. It comes out October 13th. Peter,
- 39:36Speaker 1: big fan of you. Thank you for spending some time
- 39:38Speaker 1: with us.
- 39:38Speaker 4: All right, Bobby. Hey, thanks a lot for having me.

- 40:55Speaker 1: I saw Jon Rahm is leaving Liv.
- 40:57Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 40:58Speaker 1: That's a sinking ship.
- 41:00Speaker 3: Yeah, they're running out of money.
- 41:01Speaker 1: And he made all his, or at least made most
- 41:04Speaker 1: of his, but now it's getting the PGA to allow
- 41:07Speaker 1: you to come back because you got to go and say,
- 41:09Speaker 1: I'm sorry, and then do whatever humiliation ritual they want
- 41:13Speaker 1: you to do.
- 41:13Speaker 3: But they did that with Kepka, right? Because he came back.
- 41:16Speaker 1: But he came back first and early. And also he
- 41:19Speaker 1: couldn't win certain things money-wise. But it's going to get
- 41:23Speaker 1: harder and worse for the people that come out now
- 41:25Speaker 1: But also, Rahm's one of the best. It's going to
- 41:27Speaker 1: be a lot easier for Rahm to get the allowance
- 41:31Speaker 1: to come back than Harvey Winston, Kytale III.
- 41:34Speaker 3: You know?
- 41:37Speaker 1: Who's on the cusp anyway, who was in Liv.
- 41:39Speaker 3: I do feel like the PGA's been needing these guys
- 41:42Speaker 3: back because it's been pretty boring.
- 41:45Speaker 1: But the majors are all most people watch, myself included,
- 41:47Speaker 1: and they're playing in them.
- 41:48Speaker 3: Not me. Dude, I watch on the weekends.
- 41:50Speaker 5: But that's you.
- 41:51Speaker 3: Yeah. The Genesis Open, the Bay Hill.
- 41:55Speaker 1: You're betting on them on the weekends. You're not just
- 41:57Speaker 1: watching them on the weekends.
- 41:58Speaker 5: Do you just watch the final day because you have
- 42:00Speaker 5: bets on it, or do you really watch three days?
- 42:02Speaker 3: No, three days. It's four days. So I start on Thursdays,
- 42:05Speaker 3: which is awesome, because when I get home from work
- 42:08Speaker 3: at 2 o'clock, 3 o'clock, guess what's on?
- 42:11Speaker 4: Golf. Golf.
- 42:12Speaker 3: So I get to bet on that, and it's fun.
- 42:14Speaker 3: But seriously, I don't know who I'm betting on. There
- 42:16Speaker 3: are these random dudes that are popping up that are
- 42:19Speaker 3: winning tournaments that I've never heard of.
- 42:21Speaker 1: That happens, though.
- 42:22Speaker 3: I know, but if they bring these guys back, it's
- 42:24Speaker 3: going to be exciting again.
- 42:25Speaker 5: They have to play in dresses. It's like all fantasy
- 42:27Speaker 5: football punishments.
- 42:28Speaker 1: They have to go to a McDonald's for 24 hours,
- 42:31Speaker 1: and every burger they eat is an hour off their time.
- 42:32Speaker 5: It's all just that.
- 42:35Speaker 1: I'd watch that.
- 42:35Speaker 5: That would be great.
- 42:36Speaker 1: That would be a fun stream. Yes. I just got
- 42:38Speaker 1: a payment from Instagram. Boom, $ 400.
- 42:42Speaker 3: What, for your posts?
- 42:43Speaker 1: For the month, yeah.
- 42:44Speaker 3: That's pretty good.
- 42:46Speaker 1: It's not life-changing. I think some people think that I
- 42:49Speaker 1: make a lot of money off Instagram. Instagram doesn't pay
- 42:50Speaker 1: for videos. Like, you can put up videos all day.
- 42:53Speaker 1: There's no money coming through Instagram for videos. It's only
- 42:56Speaker 1: from pictures. But, yeah, I make about $ 400 to $ 500
- 43:00Speaker 1: a month from pictures.
- 43:01Speaker 3: You post a lot.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Just videos.
- 43:05Speaker 4: Oh, really?
- 43:05Speaker 3: You don't do pictures?
- 43:06Speaker 1: Occasionally. 95% of my stuff is video because it's all
- 43:08Speaker 1: just Bobbycasts.
- 43:09Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 43:10Speaker 1: So I post a couple of times a day of
- 43:12Speaker 1: Bobbycast videos.
- 43:13Speaker 3: Dude, if you, what do you think? If you did
- 43:15Speaker 3: three pictures or three carousels a day, I know it'd
- 43:18Speaker 3: be overload. Probably be a lot of content.
- 43:20Speaker 1: I don't have that much content. What am I taking
- 43:23Speaker 1: pictures of? Anything. Of my, okay. So I have a
- 43:27Speaker 1: Garth and George Strait video. There was the picture of
- 43:30Speaker 1: you and I doing Hell's Kitchen.
- 43:32Speaker 3: That's cool.
- 43:33Speaker 1: Yeah. That's kind of a, As Kevin would say, a
- 43:35Speaker 1: unicorn of the pictures.
- 43:36Speaker 3: Kevin's big word.
- 43:39Speaker 1: BobbyCast, BobbyCast, BobbyCast, BobbyCast, BobbyCast, BobbyBoneShow, one picture. So it's
- 43:45Speaker 1: not very many.
- 43:45Speaker 3: But what about, do you take pictures with the people
- 43:47Speaker 3: that come in for BobbyCast?
- 43:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and I post one a week. Or one of them.
- 43:52Speaker 1: So it's two a week. Unless we do an episode
- 43:55Speaker 1: like we do where there is no picture.
- 43:57Speaker 5: Remember last year? Was it last year Eddie started posting
- 44:00Speaker 5: random pictures of bananas and traffic? He wanted to make
- 44:02Speaker 5: that money.
- 44:03Speaker 3: Because they gave me the offer, and I'm like, dude,
- 44:05Speaker 3: I'll take a picture of anything.
- 44:07Speaker 1: He was acting like he was making a bunch of money.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Do you still make money from Instagram?
- 44:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't post that much. So I'd say now
- 44:15Speaker 3: a month, probably $ 40.
- 44:16Speaker 1: That's money you weren't getting.
- 44:19Speaker 3: But again, though, if we go, like say we go
- 44:21Speaker 3: to a Cowboys game, and we fly with Jerry Jones again.
- 44:24Speaker 3: And I take pictures of that. And I post that
- 44:26Speaker 3: along with a couple of other things that happened in
- 44:28Speaker 3: my life. Dude, I'll make like a good $ 200 that month.
- 44:32Speaker 1: You just got to get Jerry Jones a light to
- 44:33Speaker 1: come up in the jet. Yeah.
- 44:34Speaker 5: No big deal.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Got to do hard stuff on Facebook because Facebook does
- 44:39Speaker 1: pay for videos. So I have at Mr. Bobby Bones
- 44:41Speaker 1: on Facebook, $ 3, 000 a.
- 44:45Speaker 2: Month.
- 44:45Speaker 1: And I just started this page. I didn't even know
- 44:47Speaker 1: I had this page. Morgan, number one had set it
- 44:52Speaker 1: up and it was just taking anything I posted on
- 44:56Speaker 1: Instagram through to Facebook and it just started accumulating followers.
- 45:01Speaker 1: And so I went over to it one day and
- 45:03Speaker 1: I noticed that it had like 83,000 followers. I've never
- 45:05Speaker 1: once logged into it or hadn't. She's like, yeah, I
- 45:08Speaker 1: set that up in case you ever wanted to have
- 45:09Speaker 1: your own Facebook. Cause I, the Bobby bone show page
- 45:12Speaker 1: was my Facebook until I gave it to the show.
- 45:15Speaker 1: And so I said, okay. And like some clients would
- 45:18Speaker 1: say you need to have a Facebook page too, because
- 45:21Speaker 1: we'd like to put it. And so I was like,
- 45:22Speaker 1: all right. So I just took that one over. Facebook
- 45:25Speaker 1: pays so much more than anything else because creators don't
- 45:27Speaker 1: post as much on it. You don't have creators going,
- 45:30Speaker 1: I got to get my stuff up on Facebook. But yeah,
- 45:32Speaker 1: it's like 30,000 bucks a month.
- 45:33Speaker 3: So was it weird, a weird transition from going to
- 45:36Speaker 3: like just your friends and family to like everyone?
- 45:40Speaker 1: That friends and family one I still have, and it's
- 45:43Speaker 1: literally just friends and family. Okay.
- 45:44Speaker 3: Do you still post on that?
- 45:45Speaker 1: I never post on that. Yeah.
- 45:46Speaker 5: So is it like a, I'm not on Facebook. Is
- 45:48Speaker 5: it like a following or is it like accepting friends?
- 45:51Speaker 1: It's following.
- 45:52Speaker 3: Okay.
- 45:52Speaker 1: It's a creator account type thing. But I make 3,000, yeah,
- 45:55Speaker 1: 3,000 bucks a month. That's awesome. The last couple months.
- 45:57Speaker 1: I've only had it two months from Facebook. I get
- 46:00Speaker 1: more followers.
- 46:02Speaker 3: Imagine.
- 46:02Speaker 1: Anyway, that money comes in and it goes right to
- 46:04Speaker 1: a PayPal. So it doesn't even go to my bank account.
- 46:06Speaker 1: So it feels like extra free money.
- 46:07Speaker 5: That's the best.
- 46:08Speaker 1: It's the best. And that ends up going into DraftKings
- 46:11Speaker 1: or that goes into something.
- 46:13Speaker 5: Or when you go pay somebody on Venmo, you think
- 46:15Speaker 5: you already have money there.
- 46:16Speaker 3: You're like, yeah.
- 46:17Speaker 1: I just popped through there. Cowboys, do you know the line?
- 46:21Speaker 3: I don't know the line.
- 46:22Speaker 1: As of right now?
- 46:22Speaker 3: No, I'm assuming we are favored by.
- 46:25Speaker 1: You're in Dallas playing the Bucs.
- 46:28Speaker 3: I'd say four and a half.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Nine and a half.
- 46:30Speaker 3: Wow. Wow. I mean, I figure we kill them, but
- 46:33Speaker 3: I don't know if it's going to be by that much.
- 46:36Speaker 3: Because our defense still sucks. Let's not forget that.
- 46:38Speaker 1: They don't have a quarterback.
- 46:39Speaker 3: Yeah, but they just run the ball up the gut,
- 46:41Speaker 3: and we can't stop them.
- 46:43Speaker 1: That's a massive spread for the Cowboys. Bills at Rams.
- 46:47Speaker 1: Guess the spread.
- 46:49Speaker 3: Bills at Rams. I would think the Bills would probably
- 46:53Speaker 3: be favored by 5.5.
- 46:55Speaker 1: Rams minus 2.5. What? The Rams are good.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Are they?
- 47:00Speaker 1: They've lost, but they're good.
- 47:01Speaker 4: Okay.
- 47:02Speaker 1: And they're playing in Los Angeles, and that's a far
- 47:04Speaker 1: trip from New York.
- 47:06Speaker 3: Oh, they factor all that in there?
- 47:08Speaker 1: I think they factor everything in. I think if they
- 47:10Speaker 1: find out Josh Allen's got a trickle on his throat,
- 47:12Speaker 1: they factor that in.
- 47:13Speaker 5: The unicorn trickle.
- 47:14Speaker 1: The unicorn trickle. Let's do a couple more here. Eagles
- 47:20Speaker 1: at Jaguars. I think this game's in another country. I
- 47:25Speaker 1: think they're going to London.
- 47:26Speaker 3: Oh, it's a London game.
- 47:28Speaker 1: And also, I think the Eagles are just going over today.
- 47:31Speaker 1: This is Friday. We're putting this out. I think the
- 47:33Speaker 1: Eagles are going over today.
- 47:36Speaker 5: And Lane Johnson's gone now.
- 47:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw that.
- 47:39Speaker 1: And Saquon's hurt.
- 47:39Speaker 5: And Saquon's hurt.
- 47:41Speaker 3: And the Jags are used to playing in London.
- 47:43Speaker 1: And the Eagles suck. Yes. So what do you think?
- 47:46Speaker 3: So Jags, eight and a half.
- 47:49Speaker 1: No, minus five and a half.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Eight and a half.
- 47:52Speaker 1: The Raiders at the Patriots. Kevin, this is your team.
- 47:54Speaker 2: Ooh.
- 47:56Speaker 5: Pats are at home. Raiders look pretty good. Patriots look
- 47:59Speaker 5: good last week. I'm going to go Patriots, two.
- 48:02Speaker 1: And a half.
- 48:03Speaker 3: Close.
- 48:04Speaker 1: Patriots, three and a half. Good job.
- 48:05Speaker 4: Wow.
- 48:07Speaker 1: The Ravens and Falcons game is going to be interesting.
- 48:09Speaker 1: I think that's Monday night because Atlanta is now good, apparently.
- 48:13Speaker 1: And as of right now, we don't know what's happening
- 48:15Speaker 1: with Lamar as we're recording this right now. But Baltimore
- 48:20Speaker 1: is the favorite.
- 48:23Speaker 3: Even after that showing in New Orleans?
- 48:26Speaker 1: What showing?
- 48:27Speaker 3: I mean, the Falcons, man.
- 48:29Speaker 1: The last two weeks.
- 48:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:30Speaker 1: The Packers and then, because that was the Packers.
- 48:32Speaker 3: Before, right? Yeah. We know the Packers suck, though.
- 48:34Speaker 1: I think the Packers will get better, though.
- 48:35Speaker 3: Yeah, it's the NFL. That's what I'm anticipating. Because when
- 48:38Speaker 3: I looked at my schedule, you know, the Cowboys playing, like, yes,
- 48:41Speaker 3: right now, if they played all those teams right now
- 48:43Speaker 3: in the next six weeks or whatever, our schedule, we
- 48:46Speaker 3: would be able to beat all those teams. But it
- 48:48Speaker 3: doesn't stay that way.
- 48:49Speaker 1: You just say stuff.
- 48:51Speaker 3: No, I'm serious. If we were to play the Packers today,
- 48:53Speaker 3: we would kill them. But who knows?
- 48:55Speaker 1: Aren't you playing them next week? Yeah. Or two weeks?
- 48:57Speaker 3: But who's, what's going to happen then? You know, they
- 48:59Speaker 3: get better then.
- 49:00Speaker 1: I think he just says stuff. But he did predict
- 49:02Speaker 1: that they'd win five of the next six. And so
- 49:03Speaker 1: far he's right on.
- 49:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:06Speaker 5: You one for one?
- 49:07Speaker 1: One for one, baby.
- 49:07Speaker 5: Barely squeaked it out.
- 49:08Speaker 3: Hey, baby steps, Kevin.
- 49:10Speaker 2: I know, I get it.
- 49:11Speaker 1: What I have is every quarterback that was rated the
- 49:14Speaker 1: number one quarterback coming out of high school and how
- 49:16Speaker 1: well they ended up doing for their career. I'll give
- 49:19Speaker 1: you the quarterback. Tell me if you remember them. I
- 49:21Speaker 1: don't think you're going to.
- 49:21Speaker 3: Do very well at this. I won't remember these guys?
- 49:24Speaker 1: I don't think you'll do as well as him.
- 49:25Speaker 3: Probably not.
- 49:26Speaker 1: I don't want to be a hateful hater.
- 49:27Speaker 3: You're probably right, but let's try it.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Brock Berlin. Do you know where Brock Berlin played?
- 49:36Speaker 5: Brock Berlin.
- 49:36Speaker 2: College.
- 49:37Speaker 3: I remember that.
- 49:38Speaker 4: BYU.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Where?
- 49:39Speaker 3: Yeah, Missouri.
- 49:41Speaker 1: No, you're lying. If you were to really know, I'd go, oh,
- 49:44Speaker 1: that's cool. Or if you're just guessing, that's cool.
- 49:46Speaker 3: I don't know, Brock Berlin.
- 49:48Speaker 1: So he transferred from Florida to Miami at a time
- 49:51Speaker 1: when you didn't transfer. So he was Miami's starter, went undrafted,
- 49:54Speaker 1: appeared in two NFL games with the Rams. So he's
- 49:56Speaker 1: from 2000, the number one quarterback out of high school.
- 49:59Speaker 1: Number two, I know you'll get this one, Kevin, so
- 50:02Speaker 1: hold off. We're just asking where they played college ball. Eddie,
- 50:04Speaker 1: Brody Croyle.
- 50:06Speaker 3: Oh, Brody. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He had a pretty good
- 50:09Speaker 3: college career. Brody played down in Texas.
- 50:14Speaker 5: Kevin?
- 50:16Speaker 1: Oh, you don't know?
- 50:16Speaker 5: I know the name, and I just can't picture it
- 50:18Speaker 5: right now.
- 50:19Speaker 1: I think maybe because you're not an SEC true-true.
- 50:21Speaker 3: So he wasn't in Texas.
- 50:23Speaker 5: Because the first thing that popped in my head, but
- 50:24Speaker 5: they weren't SEC at the time, is Missouri.
- 50:26Speaker 1: You're just copying Eddie now.
- 50:28Speaker 3: LSU?
- 50:28Speaker 1: Just pick Missouri if you don't know.
- 50:30Speaker 5: Alabama.
- 50:31Speaker 1: So he held a bunch of the passing records. He
- 50:34Speaker 1: was a third-round pick, but finished 0-10 as an NFL starter.
- 50:38Speaker 1: I forgot about him. All right, 2002. Vince Young.
- 50:42Speaker 3: Down in Texas.
- 50:43Speaker 1: Yeah, that's easy. National champion, Heisman runner-up, won all the awards,
- 50:47Speaker 1: NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, two-time NFL Pro Bowler,
- 50:50Speaker 1: but didn't sustain any early success. I think a lot
- 50:52Speaker 1: of that, too, is because you go to a bad organization,
- 50:56Speaker 1: it's hard to succeed. When you look at the biggest
- 50:58Speaker 1: busts in NFL history— like biggest quarterback busts, and they
- 51:03Speaker 1: do top 15, it's like four or five of them
- 51:05Speaker 1: are Browns.
- 51:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 51:06Speaker 1: And two or three of them are Raiders. It's just organizational.
- 51:09Speaker 1: Who knows how many of those guys would have actually
- 51:10Speaker 1: been good had they been at a place that could
- 51:12Speaker 1: nurture and have some stability, good coaching. Like Tim Couch
- 51:18Speaker 1: would have been good. Jamarcus Russell would not have been
- 51:21Speaker 1: good regardless.
- 51:22Speaker 3: No.
- 51:23Speaker 5: Gotta watch film.
- 51:24Speaker 1: Okay, Kyle Wright. If you don't know, just say you
- 51:26Speaker 1: don't know if you've never even heard of him.
- 51:27Speaker 3: Never heard of him.
- 51:28Speaker 5: Never heard of him.
- 51:29Speaker 1: At Miami. Became a college starter, but never played a
- 51:32Speaker 1: regular season game in the NFL. Rhett Bomar.
- 51:36Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, these names.
- 51:37Speaker 3: Oh, Bomar. I remember Bomar. Was he LSU?
- 51:42Speaker 1: So, you want to take a shot?
- 51:44Speaker 3: Louisville?
- 51:45Speaker 1: No, Oklahoma. Oklahoma. And then transferred to Sam Houston State.
- 51:50Speaker 3: Oh, that's why I remember Bomar. Yeah.
- 51:54Speaker 1: Do you really?
- 51:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I remember the last name Bomar.
- 51:56Speaker 1: For sure.
- 51:56Speaker 3: For sure.
- 51:58Speaker 1: You were out of college, though, by this point.
- 52:00Speaker 3: I was, but I still follow Sam Houston State.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Who doesn't?
- 52:03Speaker 3: I remember Bomar because he played for Oklahoma, and it
- 52:08Speaker 3: was Boomer, Boomer Sooner, and Bomar.
- 52:11Speaker 1: You might just be making that up. That's pretty good
- 52:13Speaker 1: to make that up on the fly, dude. I remember
- 52:16Speaker 1: Rhett because I was like, let him play. Rhett him play.
- 52:18Speaker 5: Let him play.
- 52:20Speaker 1: Fifth-round Giants pick. Never played in an NFL game. Mark Sanchez.
- 52:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 52:25Speaker 3: Yeah, where did he play, though?
- 52:26Speaker 1: You know this. USC?
- 52:28Speaker 3: USC.
- 52:28Speaker 1: 2009 Rose Bowl Offensive MVP, number five overall pick. Had
- 52:32Speaker 1: a pretty good career with the Jets. I took him
- 52:34Speaker 1: to the AFC Championship game, then became a journeyman, then
- 52:37Speaker 1: stabbed a dude, right? Didn't he stab somebody? Yeah. An
- 52:38Speaker 1: old man?
- 52:39Speaker 3: He didn't stab him. I think he.
- 52:41Speaker 1: Beat him up?
- 52:42Speaker 3: Beat him up.
- 52:43Speaker 5: Beat him up, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:43Speaker 3: He got stabbed.
- 52:44Speaker 4: Okay.
- 52:45Speaker 1: These are all the number one quarterbacks coming out of
- 52:47Speaker 1: high school. 2006. Matthew Stafford, Eddie.
- 52:53Speaker 3: Came out of... Matthew Stafford played for Georgia. Correct.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Number one overall pick.
- 53:00Speaker 3: Legit.
- 53:00Speaker 1: Will be a Hall of Famer.
- 53:01Speaker 5: Still going.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Yeah. Jimmy Claussen.
- 53:06Speaker 3: A & M?
- 53:07Speaker 5: Notre Dame? Notre Dame.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Was pretty good. Yeah. Ended up going to the Panthers.
- 53:14Speaker 1: The big story there is he tried to take Cam
- 53:16Speaker 1: Newton's number. Remember that?
- 53:17Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 53:18Speaker 1: That's what I know him from mostly, but it was
- 53:20Speaker 1: just a backup. Terrell Pryor. No.
- 53:25Speaker 4: Really? Really.
- 53:26Speaker 1: Wow.
- 53:27Speaker 5: Ohio State?
- 53:27Speaker 1: Yeah. Big 10 freshman of the year, 2010 Rose Bowl,
- 53:30Speaker 1: offensive MVP. They had to vacate that 2011 Sugar Bowl,
- 53:36Speaker 1: and he played receiver in the NFL.
- 53:38Speaker 5: Remember that one year he had?
- 53:39Speaker 1: At 1,000 yards in 2016. Oh, wow. Matt Barkley. Yep.
- 53:46Speaker 3: Michigan?
- 53:48Speaker 5: USC.
- 53:48Speaker 3: USC.
- 53:49Speaker 1: Okay.
- 53:49Speaker 3: All right.
- 53:50Speaker 1: He left USC with Pac-12 career passing records. Fourth round pick.
- 53:54Speaker 1: Was a backup for a long time. Like, was a serviceable,
- 53:57Speaker 1: decently long-term backup. If he's still not in the league,
- 54:00Speaker 1: I don't know that he's not, but I don't think
- 54:01Speaker 1: he is. He's not, no. 2010, Phillip Sims.
- 54:10Speaker 3: Not related to Phil Sims, right?
- 54:12Speaker 1: Nah, because that'd be Chris.
- 54:13Speaker 3: That'd be Chris. Yeah, I don't know Phillip Sims.
- 54:16Speaker 1: I don't think that's another Sims kid. You can look
- 54:19Speaker 1: that up, but he... Lost Alabama starting competition to A.J. McCarron,
- 54:24Speaker 1: because he was number one in high school. Signed with
- 54:25Speaker 1: Arizona and Seattle in the NFL, but never played a
- 54:27Speaker 1: regular season game, but went Alabama, Virginia, and then Winston-Salem State. Wow.
- 54:31Speaker 5: That guy's definitely not related. Oh, black dude?
- 54:34Speaker 1: Yep. Because Phil Simms is the whitest dude. Yeah. And
- 54:37Speaker 1: Chris Simms, you can see through him. They're so white. Yeah, yeah.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Jeff Driscoll.
- 54:43Speaker 5: Oh.
- 54:44Speaker 4: 2011.
- 54:44Speaker 5: Dang, is he that old now?
- 54:46Speaker 4: I know.
- 54:47Speaker 1: It makes you feel old, right?
- 54:48Speaker 4: Wow.
- 54:48Speaker 5: Florida?
- 54:49Speaker 4: Florida.
- 54:49Speaker 1: So started at Florida, but then went to Louisiana Tech.
- 54:53Speaker 1: He was a transfer. Long time NFL backup.
- 54:55Speaker 4: Wow.
- 54:56Speaker 1: Occasional starter. Jameis Winston, 2012. Number one quarterback coming out
- 54:59Speaker 1: of high school.
- 55:01Speaker 3: Is he Florida State? Krabs in Florida State. Florida State.
- 55:05Speaker 5: Got the gear on today.
- 55:06Speaker 1: He won the Heisman.
- 55:08Speaker 3: You forget.
- 55:08Speaker 5: Yeah, you do.
- 55:09Speaker 3: That he won the Heisman.
- 55:10Speaker 1: National champion.
- 55:11Speaker 5: Yep.
- 55:11Speaker 1: Won the O'Brien Award. Number one overall pick. Wow. And
- 55:15Speaker 1: was a productive player. but then he just threw, in Tampa,
- 55:19Speaker 1: he just threw so many interceptions. And now, obviously, he's
- 55:23Speaker 1: starting for the Giants as of right now. 2013, Max Brown. Mm-mm.
- 55:29Speaker 3: You know Max Brown?
- 55:29Speaker 4: Mm-mm.
- 55:31Speaker 3: What does that sound mean?
- 55:32Speaker 5: That just means Max Brown.
- 55:34Speaker 3: He doesn't know Max Brown.
- 55:36Speaker 5: Georgia.
- 55:36Speaker 1: Started at USC and went to Pittsburgh. Won starting jobs
- 55:39Speaker 1: at both schools. Is he an announcer now? Look at
- 55:41Speaker 1: his B-R-O-W-N-E. Maybe a TikTok guy? was replaced by Sam
- 55:46Speaker 1: Darnall at USC, shoulder injury at Pitt, never played in
- 55:49Speaker 1: the NFL. Do you recognize him?
- 55:53Speaker 5: College football analyst, yeah, for ESPN, ACC Network.
- 55:57Speaker 1: I need to look him up, but that feels like
- 55:59Speaker 1: that's who that is. Let's see, Max Brown. Oh yeah,
- 56:02Speaker 1: he's all over TikTok. He got famous on TikTok. And
- 56:04Speaker 1: he would just talk about how he was a five-star
- 56:06Speaker 1: and ended up sucking.
- 56:07Speaker 3: He talks about that?
- 56:08Speaker 1: Yeah, he was like real honest.
- 56:09Speaker 5: Oh, he makes fun of himself kind of?
- 56:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 56:11Speaker 5: That's funny.
- 56:11Speaker 1: Like he's real honest about being a five-star and then
- 56:13Speaker 1: it never panned out. All right. We're getting closer. Kyle Allen.
- 56:17Speaker 3: Yes. You remember Kyle Allen?
- 56:19Speaker 1: Yep.
- 56:20Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 56:21Speaker 5: Oh, A & M.
- 56:22Speaker 1: Yeah. Good job. Undrafted, but had 12 starts for Carolina
- 56:26Speaker 1: in 2019. Ended up at Houston in college, but yeah,
- 56:29Speaker 1: was a backup, but played for Carolina, the Panthers. The
- 56:33Speaker 1: Panthers are good this year, guys.
- 56:34Speaker 3: Yeah, they are.
- 56:35Speaker 2: Your team?
- 56:35Speaker 1: I've been lifelonging them for a long time. Josh Rosen.
- 56:39Speaker 3: Oh, Josh Rosen. He played for the Cardinals. Um, He was, like,
- 56:44Speaker 3: really big.
- 56:44Speaker 1: You're right about the Cardinals. He was the number 10
- 56:46Speaker 1: overall pick.
- 56:47Speaker 3: Where did he go to college, though?
- 56:49Speaker 1: Oregon? You know.
- 56:50Speaker 3: Close.
- 56:51Speaker 5: UCLA.
- 56:52Speaker 1: His freshman of the year, Pac-12. And his whole story
- 56:56Speaker 1: was people felt like he didn't want it that bad.
- 56:59Speaker 3: I think he grew up a rich kid.
- 57:00Speaker 1: Yeah. And that's what we would hear. He's a rich
- 57:02Speaker 1: kid who doesn't really have to put in the work,
- 57:04Speaker 1: doesn't want it that bad. But he was an NFL
- 57:07Speaker 1: draft disappointment. Shea Patterson?
- 57:12Speaker 5: I want to say Oklahoma.
- 57:13Speaker 1: Ole Miss, then Michigan. College starter. Signed with Kansas City.
- 57:18Speaker 1: Never actually played in a regular game. Played in other leagues, though.
- 57:22Speaker 1: I guess like Arena.
- 57:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:23Speaker 1: Davis Mills.
- 57:26Speaker 3: Oh, I remember Davis Mills. Miami?
- 57:29Speaker 1: Do you know where Davis Mills played? You know him now, though, right? Yeah.
- 57:32Speaker 3: Davis Mills. No, what does he do now? Is he
- 57:34Speaker 3: a commentator?
- 57:35Speaker 4: No.
- 57:36Speaker 1: He actually played well last year.
- 57:38Speaker 5: Yeah, he's played well as a backup.
- 57:40Speaker 3: Oh, for Houston.
- 57:42Speaker 5: Yeah, the Texans.
- 57:42Speaker 3: That's right.
- 57:43Speaker 5: I'm blanking right now. Let me, yeah, I don't know.
- 57:46Speaker 1: I missed this one too, Stanford.
- 57:49Speaker 5: Oh, wow, yeah.
- 57:50Speaker 1: Third round Texans pick. Started exclusively in 21 and 22
- 57:53Speaker 1: before CJ Stroud.
- 57:56Speaker 3: Forgot about him.
- 57:57Speaker 1: This is also cool just knowing who the number one
- 57:58Speaker 1: quarterbacks were. Trevor Lawrence. Yeah.
- 58:01Speaker 3: Yeah, Trevor Lawrence. Clemson.
- 58:03Speaker 4: Good.
- 58:04Speaker 1: Number one overall pick. Yeah, he's good this year too.
- 58:07Speaker 1: Spencer Rattler.
- 58:09Speaker 3: That's Oklahoma.
- 58:11Speaker 1: Where did he end up?
- 58:13Speaker 3: Spencer Rattler, Oklahoma, South Carolina. Correct.
- 58:17Speaker 1: Nice job. 14 NFL starts.
- 58:19Speaker 4: Yes.
- 58:21Speaker 1: He got shucked.
- 58:22Speaker 4: Oh, nice.
- 58:23Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 58:23Speaker 3: He went to the Saints. That's right. And played.
- 58:26Speaker 1: And then Shuck came in even after him last year.
- 58:28Speaker 1: And Shuck played so well. Bryce Young, 2020.
- 58:32Speaker 3: Alabama.
- 58:35Speaker 1: Quinn Ewers, 2021. Texas. Yeah, so he played a little
- 58:39Speaker 1: bit with Miami last year, but then was traded to
- 58:41Speaker 1: Jacksonville this year. I didn't know that until I looked
- 58:43Speaker 1: it up.
- 58:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I think right before the season.
- 58:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I missed it. Yeah. I blinked.
- 58:48Speaker 5: He's gone.
- 58:48Speaker 1: He's back.
- 58:49Speaker 3: Because he did play.
- 58:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 58:50Speaker 3: He started for Miami, right?
- 58:51Speaker 1: Yeah, for a minute. 2022, Cade Klubnick.
- 58:55Speaker 3: Clemson.
- 58:56Speaker 1: Yep. Too early to judge. 2023, Arch Manning.
- 59:01Speaker 3: Down in Texas.
- 59:02Speaker 1: Was the number one quarterback. 2024, Julian Sayen. Where did
- 59:07Speaker 1: he go to college first?
- 59:09Speaker 3: Oh, he came from somewhere else?
- 59:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:13Speaker 3: Julian Sayen.
- 59:15Speaker 5: Alabama.
- 59:15Speaker 1: Yes.
- 59:16Speaker 3: Wow, good job, Kevin.
- 59:18Speaker 5: He's a San Diego kid. That's how I know that.
- 59:20Speaker 1: How did you know Alabama? I didn't know that.
- 59:21Speaker 5: Just because I have family in San Diego, so I
- 59:23Speaker 5: knew about him before, and that's really the only reason.
- 59:26Speaker 3: All you Californians, you all kind of know each other?
- 59:28Speaker 5: All you know about these kids when they're in high school, yeah,
- 59:30Speaker 5: like Matt Barclays. Really? Yeah, Bryce Young, they went to
- 59:35Speaker 5: the same high school.
- 59:36Speaker 1: Bryce Underwood.
- 59:38Speaker 3: Yeah. Is that Michigan?
- 59:40Speaker 1: He's Michigan now, yeah. Two high school state championships. That's
- 59:46Speaker 1: what's up now. I guess they're the Michigan State champions
- 59:50Speaker 1: right now.
- 59:51Speaker 3: Lucky Hail Mary.
- 59:54Speaker 1: Yeah. They beat Western and they're better than Michigan State.
- 59:57Speaker 1: And then the 2026, the one that was last year
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: is Kaysan Henderson. He finished as the number one quarterback
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: recruit and was 24-7 sports number one overall prospect. Do
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: you know where he is right now?
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: What region? South. South.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: I wonder if he has any stats. I don't watch
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: this team, but I think they're ranked.
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: Oh, is it SMU?
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: No, but you're close.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: Houston?
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: I'm going to look up. What gave you that? Me
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: saying they're ranked?
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Who are these smaller schools that are ranked?
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: He has 83 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and 54
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: rushing yards in his freshman season with the Houston Cougars.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: He's 6 of 8. I don't know if he started
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: or not.
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: He rushes, right? He's a running quarterback?
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: I've not seen him or spent any time. I know
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: nothing about him.
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: Because their starter was the same guy from last year,
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: I believe, number seven. I can't remember his name right now.
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: Oh, that's not him.
- 1:00:52Speaker 5: Makes sense. Oh, I'm thinking of SMU, maybe. I get
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: those mixed up. Same colors, state.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Huh. Yeah.
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: One's blue, one's red. But yeah, I guess they kind
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: of alternate.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: He must not be starting. There's no chance. If he's
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: six of eight. No. One carry.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: No, then no.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: He's 6'5, 195.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: May not be blessed with that size.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: That'd be awesome.
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: That's got a lot of money.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: To go there?
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: To go to Houston? Yeah, probably.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: That's what's up. So that's fun. All those guys were
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: the number one quarterback coming out of high school. It's
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: crazy to see how many had successful NFL careers. So
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: I'm going to put Vince Young in a successful NFL
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: career because he did win NFL Rookie of the Year
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: and is a two-time Pro Bowler. That's success, even if
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: it wasn't long-term. So I'd go Vince Young won. Mark Sanchez, two.
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: Stafford.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: I'm not there yet.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: Oh, I thought you were going to... I would put
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: Stafford higher, though, right?
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: I'm going by years.
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: Oh, I got what you're saying.
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: He's not ranking them.
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: I thought you were ranking them.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: No, I'm going by years here.
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: You're missing Stafford.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: Matthew Stafford, three.
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: I can see where that could be confused. I'm literally
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: just going down the list looking at them. Matthew Stafford, three.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: I don't think I can put Jimmy Clawson in the
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: successful NFL career. You guys can overrule me if you want. No.
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: No, because it was underwhelming.
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: Three.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: Terrell Pryor... He's 1,000 yards wide receiver. I don't think
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: I'm going to put him in either.
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: No.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Matt Barkley.
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: That's tough.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: I linked the NFL backup. Let's put him in. He's borderline.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: If you play more than five years in the league,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: I think you should get in.
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: Yeah, and it wasn't like he was the first overall pick.
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: True.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: Fourth round pick.
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: Okay, so one, two, three.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: So far, we're at four. James Winston, five. Yeah. Davis Mills, six.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence, seven. Spencer Rattler, he did start a bit.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: It's like year three or so. Yeah.
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: Yeah, and he's still in the league.
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: He's still in there.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Bryce Young, nine.
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: For sure.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: That's all I'm going to put in here now. So
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: nine out of 20. It's about 50%. If you're the
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: number one high school quarterback, it's almost 50% that you're
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: going to go to the NFL and have at least
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: a decent career.
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: That's actually higher than I would have guessed.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Me too. Some of them, like no chance, but some
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: of them.
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: That's gotta be tough. Just flying high for so many
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: years and then.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Sometimes though you fly high just on athletic ability.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: And then when everybody catches up with you or is
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: somewhat close to you, you haven't trained to work hard.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: It's like going to college when you didn't have to
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: study in high school at all. And then all of
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: a sudden you don't have the study skills when you're
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: in college and you're going, Oh my God, I was
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: the smartest kid in high school. I'm just getting lapped
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: right now because you haven't done the reps of learning
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: how to study.
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: Okay. That's it.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: Thank you. There's a song. I was listening to Simple
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: Man the other day. It popped up on a playlist. Yeah.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: I think about this because it's a ripoff of Simple Man.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: Complicated Man.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: Yeah, it's called Complicated Man. And this was on. I
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: was enjoying it. And I was like, oh, this reminds
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: me of our show. And then I remembered it's a
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: knockoff song that we can play on the podcast.
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: We also have Free as a Bird.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: Do you have it there now? Yeah.
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: Here.
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: That's pretty close.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: It's just in a different key. Yeah. Slightly off.
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: And maybe holding the note a little longer than the
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: other one does.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: So they don't get sued.
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: That's crazy.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: We can use it because it's allowed. But it's supposed
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: to sound like the original.
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: All right, hit us back with some Complicated Man.
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: Here's Complicated Man.
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: All right, that's it.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: We'll see you guys. Have a good weekend. And we'll
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: see you early next week.
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: All right, blow it.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: All right.
