- 0:17I'm Rico. And I'm Jessica, and this is the
- 0:20Always The Critic podcast. And Tebak K Rambles podcast
- 0:23where a couple of friends review the latest movies.
- 0:26And Korean dramas, If you're wondering what's going on, we're
- 0:31in the middle of this mini spooky season over on Tebak K
- 0:34Rambles, and you're listening to a crossover episode.
- 0:40Rico. I know.
- 0:41Hey, Rico is the OG cohost of Tebak, and even though his work
- 0:44schedule takes him away from being able to cohost, he's still
- 0:47producing every episode. And we usually talk about movies
- 0:50weekly on Always the critics. So, Rico, how have you been the
- 0:53last time you were here? Was Sweet Home for that review?
- 0:56Yes, Sweet Home, which would have fit perfectly in this
- 1:01season that you're doing right now.
- 1:03Yeah. So I've been doing pretty well,
- 1:06just, you know, watching as many movies as I can.
- 1:10Which if you look at my output, it doesn't really seem like a
- 1:13lot. It actually seems like I'm not
- 1:15really trying, but I'm actually making an effort in in trying to
- 1:20watch movies, trying to get out there and, you know, put my AMC
- 1:26A list to good use. Yeah, we went today and watched
- 1:30Hocus Pocus in theaters, which was.
- 1:33Super nice, I thought, OK, like whatever, Hocus pocus, it should
- 1:35be fun. But then I walked out and I was
- 1:37like, that was a really fun experience because the audience
- 1:41was packed and. We had this dude that was
- 1:45sitting in front of the row in front of us.
- 1:46I don't even know why he was there.
- 1:48He didn't come with any kids, any like spouse or anything.
- 1:51He was sitting in between two older couples, which I was like
- 1:54OK2 elderly couples sitting in the hocus focus.
- 1:58But OK this guy was having the best time.
- 2:02He was laughing at all the jokes.
- 2:04He was into it. So it was a nice hot crowd.
- 2:08That is pretty cool. I know I love when a crowd.
- 2:13It's a good crowd, love a good crowd in movie theater.
- 2:17And Speaking of hot crowds, next week, like I got to figure out.
- 2:23I got to talk to Daniel Romero. He's a friend of the show.
- 2:26He's been on the show and because he has tickets for the
- 2:29the Swift concert movie, exactly.
- 2:32So I need to get it from him. Oh, right, right.
- 2:35Because you're going to get his tickets right.
- 2:37I think I'm seeing it on next Saturday.
- 2:39So for those who don't know, and maybe don't live in America,
- 2:43we're talking about the Taylor Swift Eras Tour concert movie
- 2:48which is coming out. In theaters and is single
- 2:50handedly saving the movie theater this season because of
- 2:54the dual strikes for WGA and SAG AFRA.
- 2:58So we're glad to see Taylor doing a good deed here.
- 3:02And not for, not for all of us, really, but excited to see the
- 3:08show again because I did manage everything I know movie theater
- 3:13she's boosting the. I know everywhere she goes, man.
- 3:17I know, I know, OK, But this is like a huge tangent.
- 3:20So anyway, we're here to review the Netflix original movie that
- 3:23just came out. I had kind of saw the trailer
- 3:27and I was like, ooh, this looks good.
- 3:29And I showed it to you, Rico, And you were like, OK, like, it
- 3:33looks pretty, pretty good. What?
- 3:35What did you think when I showed you this trailer?
- 3:38I thought, OK, it looks like a fun action thriller type of
- 3:45movie, you know, where we get to see, you know when a female lead
- 3:51kick ass you know. And so the movie that we're
- 3:55talking about that is the movie Ballerina.
- 3:59It's on Netflix. It just came out and I watched
- 4:04the last night. You watched the last night, I'm
- 4:06guessing as well. I.
- 4:07Watched it a couple hours ago. Oh, a couple hours.
- 4:09Oh, so you're even more fresh than I am.
- 4:13Gotcha. So yeah, we're definitely gonna
- 4:15talk about that right now. But before we get started, if

- 5:19your support as along with everybody else who has been a
- 5:23supporter already, we really appreciate it.
- 5:25So today, let's talk about the movie Ballerina Jessica.
- 5:29What is that movie about? I got you, the IMDb synopsis
- 5:32reads. Grieving the loss of a best
- 5:34friend she couldn't protect, an ex bodyguard sets out to fulfill
- 5:38her dear friend's last wish, sweet revenge.
- 5:41It is directed and written by Ichung Hyun, who has done a few
- 5:45other movies and one miniseries. But the movie that I have
- 5:48watched is The Call from 2020, which also probably fits really
- 5:55well with the spooky season because.
- 5:58Yeah, and it also stars the same female lead, John.
- 6:02OK, hope I don't mispronounce her name Jong.
- 6:05I've already got it wrong. John Jong so plays Okchu in
- 6:11ballerina. And she was also in the call,
- 6:15which she was. I don't know if I want to spoil
- 6:18it. I'll just say she was in the
- 6:20call. She's in the movie The Call.
- 6:21Yes, and it's really good. And it also stars Pakshene from
- 6:26the heirs. OK, got it.
- 6:27Memories of the Alhambra. So those are some of other shows
- 6:31from Pak Shune. But this movie ballerina also
- 6:35stars Kim Diyun as pro toy. I just made a TikTok about this
- 6:43man. He's like ridiculously hot in
- 6:48this movie. There is no like, no reason for
- 6:52it, no. The shots that they have of him
- 6:55like cleaning the car, watching the car.
- 6:59Do you remember these? Like I was like, what is going
- 7:01on? Why?
- 7:03But OK, yeah, OK. OK, fine, so Kinsey and you
- 7:08might have seen him in Flower of Evil, which we have also covered
- 7:13on the Tebak feed. He is the I don't want to spoil
- 7:17it. Anyway, he's in that show.
- 7:21And he's maybe not so good for Jong so Oh my God.
- 7:25Jong Jong. So the female lead.
- 7:27You might have seen her in Burning as well.
- 7:31The 2018 movie Do. You remember that movie?
- 7:34Yes, she's doing it OK. She's in it.
- 7:36She's the girl. Yeah.
- 7:37Yeah. You know what?
- 7:39I kept looking at her. I was like, where is she from?
- 7:42And I couldn't quite place it. And there we go.
- 7:45Now I have an answer. Yeah, there it is.
- 7:49And we have Pak Yudim plays Mini.
- 7:52And then we have a few other really noticeable or notable
- 7:58people in here. We have Pak Hyung Su as Myung
- 8:01Shik. He's the pharmacist.
- 8:05We have Kim Moyol as the CEO. You might have seen him in
- 8:10Forgotten Yeah, Forgotten with Kanganul, which is also like a
- 8:16thriller that I just watched the other day.
- 8:18Like, this is incredible because I was like, Oh my God, all these
- 8:20people together. And then we have Kim Yongkok as
- 8:23sort of a bit player. She's the gun dealer.
- 8:26This is the grandma that we see in every single K drama.
- 8:30Got it. I love her, actually.
- 8:33You've seen her because she was also the old housekeeper in Boys
- 8:38Over Flowers. Oh, OK.
- 8:42Yes, flowers. Oh my God.
- 8:43I know we can't rehash it. We can't.
- 8:47No, no, no, no. We don't have to.
- 8:49We don't have to. But if you want to hear our take
- 8:51on Boys Over Flowers, you got to scroll all the way back in your
- 8:54podcast feed on the Tebak feed. It's episode one.
- 9:00I'll go ahead and give the the critics consensus because the
- 9:03Rotten Tomatoes score based on 7/7 reviews.
- 9:08So far is 100% and then the audience score is also 100%.
- 9:16Oh my God. This tickles us because we're
- 9:21constantly looking at the Rotten Tomatoes score for our weekly
- 9:24movies. That's always a critic, and it's
- 9:26never 100%. Even great movies.
- 9:30Yeah, never 100% the best movies ever.
- 9:32No, like 98 is what you can hope for, right?
- 9:38No. Like, Rotten Tomatoes has its
- 9:39own issues and like, I don't know, whatever.
- 9:42Yeah, but yeah, 100%. So, Rico, what did you think of
- 9:46this movie? So I was watching the movie,
- 9:54right? I saw the runtime of an hour 33.
- 9:59I was like, oh, I was like. Blessed, yes, and somehow it
- 10:04still felt long. Get out.
- 10:07I think this is a bad movie. Get out.
- 10:10This is a bad movie. I think so here's why I think
- 10:15it's a bad movie. I think the reason why it's bad
- 10:18is that the movie does not really give us full reason to
- 10:24care for the lead character. I think that they do not such a
- 10:30great job of making you care for the relationship with her best
- 10:35friend. They do flashbacks, you know and
- 10:40the way the movie kind of treats it like you you can't tell if
- 10:43it's a best friend or if it's like a lover like the way you
- 10:46know they they kind of dance with that.
- 10:50I think the the surrounding antagonist or the villain I'm
- 10:57talking about like the CEO and like the gang related stuff
- 11:01doesn't really like integrate itself well into the movie.
- 11:07I think that they do it kind of haphazardly.
- 11:11I feel like this movie is all style, no substance, because you
- 11:18know what it feels like. And the I kept getting this
- 11:22feeling is that the movie looks like it was shot as a music
- 11:27video. A lot of the movements, a lot of
- 11:30the lights, a lot of the types of things that you would see
- 11:34like in today's current iteration of music videos.
- 11:38That's how this movie was shot, which in a lot of cases it looks
- 11:41cool. You know, I think that it left
- 11:46me wanting more in terms of the action.
- 11:50I don't think there's enough action in this movie.
- 11:52That's feels it's supposed to be a revenge action movie and it
- 11:58kind of falls short on that. There's not enough of that
- 12:03either and with the action the way the way it's it's shot, it's
- 12:12way too many movements. So it's like you can't even
- 12:16appreciate like the full line, like fight scenes all the way
- 12:21through. So overall, I was having a hard
- 12:26time enjoying this movie. I was like looking for reasons
- 12:30to really enjoy it. And I could point here and
- 12:33there, but for the most part I just sat here and I was like,
- 12:38well, that was a movie and So what?
- 12:42What did you think, Jessica? OK, so when you said you didn't
- 12:45like it, I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 12:47But then I kind of just agreed with everything that you said.
- 12:49Because I think it's really. Beautiful to look at, and it
- 12:54reminded me a lot of the recent John Wick movies.
- 12:59Yes, we had like a lot of that neon binary lighting.
- 13:03Oh for sure. And they're definitely drawing
- 13:06stuff from John Wick. But when you start drawing stuff
- 13:11from John Wick, you naturally draw the comparisons as well,
- 13:16because you. Have this sort of invincible
- 13:20central character. With a bone to pick, right?
- 13:25Yeah. And I think that her performance
- 13:29is so like stiff, like she, she doesn't.
- 13:35She gives us maybe one or two moments of like emotion, but for
- 13:40the most part she plays it like very flat in terms of she's not
- 13:46going to give us anything in the face like in terms of like
- 13:50emotions emoting her, her demeanor as a character is just
- 13:59no intimidation at all. And that's by design in the
- 14:03movie. But even after the audience
- 14:07knows that she is like a badass killer, even then it's kind of
- 14:12like well, I want to see more of her being this badass killer and
- 14:16we don't really get it. So, so that's one of my
- 14:21complaints. I think for me, I was hoping
- 14:25that she was the ballerina, Yes, that's another thing that was.
- 14:31Really hoping. And I thought, what I thought
- 14:32that she was the ballerina going into it.
- 14:34But she's not. She's not.
- 14:36She is getting revenge for the ballerina.
- 14:41Correct, right. There is an element to this that
- 14:46is real. I can't remember what
- 14:52documentary it was, but I watched this documentary in
- 14:57South Korea from South Korea. Not that I was in South Korea
- 15:00and watching this documentary, but it was from South Korea and
- 15:05it was this serial killer who was doing what the villain was
- 15:11doing in this movie who was like a well off dude he was.
- 15:19You know, maybe this is spoiling it.
- 15:21I'll just leave this. I'll just leave this for the
- 15:23spoiler section. Like what?
- 15:24The real life story that I watched and I was like, this is
- 15:27very similar. I'll leave that for the spoiler
- 15:29section. But anyway, I felt like it had
- 15:32roots in reality. But, but bringing in the gang or
- 15:39cartel or whatever you want to call it was a little bit jarring
- 15:44because you're like, oh, he's. Not this one off, dude.
- 15:48He's got this whole infrastructure behind him and in
- 15:51my mind, I was expecting it to get way more intense, like, oh,
- 15:55now the the hunt is on. Because he's not alone.
- 16:00It's not this one off dude who she's trying to get revenge on,
- 16:03It's everybody else that's backing him.
- 16:07Like, she has to dismantle the whole thing, right?
- 16:10The movie kind of wants to lead you there, but I don't think it
- 16:16really. Has a It's just underwhelming.
- 16:19Yeah, exactly. It's underwhelming.
- 16:20It's not a satisfying way of getting there.
- 16:23And also, with what you're saying, his character, once it's
- 16:30revealed that there's like an entire cartel.
- 16:32I thought, like we were being introduced to like the big bad,
- 16:37and it doesn't really go that way.
- 16:40But we'll talk more about that in spoilers, though.
- 16:44Did you like the inclusion of the high school student?
- 16:49The high school student Her name is.
- 16:53How do you pronounce it? She didn't say Hui.
- 16:56Yes, that's her. Real name, right.
- 16:59That's her real name. Yeah, I see.
- 17:04What they were trying to do is that they were trying to
- 17:07integrate like a naive, helpless type of victim type of character
- 17:16for the bodyguard to be in charge of and to look after.
- 17:21But it it didn't really no amount to anything good or
- 17:26anything. Well, like you think that's
- 17:28going to let us a fire in her to really dismantle this cartel,
- 17:34human trafficking gang or whatever.
- 17:37And she's just kind of chill about it, like there's no
- 17:40reaction from her. No, it's.
- 17:43And it's not even like they don't even do a good job of,
- 17:48like, making it so that she sees the ballerina in her, like, you
- 17:54know, drawing comparisons. Right, yes, because that would
- 17:57have been good to do, you know. That she maybe reminded her of
- 18:02her friend, but they don't do a good job of doing that.
- 18:05I wish they would have. And then you you get more
- 18:09sympathy for her relationship and the way she's dealing with
- 18:14everything going on with her friend, her old friend, the
- 18:18ballerina. So one thing I will say that the
- 18:26the acting in this movie kind of ranges like there's good
- 18:31performances. Like I would say, Pro Troy, the
- 18:35character as a villain, he's menacing like he.
- 18:39Like, you like that dude. Yeah.
- 18:40I think what he did really good at being what he is, just like
- 18:44this, a sadistic, like into some weird and legal and crazy shit.
- 18:54And he he does it in this terrifying way.
- 18:57When he looks at like women, he has like this really disgusting
- 19:04like look about him that was very convincing, like as a
- 19:08villain. So shout out to him.
- 19:11I did not like me and Chick the pharmacist.
- 19:16You didn't like the pharmacist? No, I didn't like the
- 19:18pharmacist. Bro, you didn't recognize him.
- 19:20That's one of the brothers, the evil brother from Crash landing
- 19:24on you. Yeah, it was, wasn't it?
- 19:26Yeah, I was trying to play some and I was like, I know this
- 19:28dude. But like, yeah, that performance
- 19:33was so like, I don't know. It kind of felt like over the
- 19:37top, just like. Oh, really?
- 19:40OK, yeah. Well, ooh, there's here's
- 19:42another question about the way we watch the movie.
- 19:46In terms of watching it, how did you watch it?
- 19:49I know Netflix, but like, subtitles dub.
- 19:54What? How did you go about?
- 19:55It, bro. So I don't know why, but like,
- 19:57Netflix is constantly pushing dubs on me, yeah.
- 20:01Every. So I press play and I watch a
- 20:04lot of Korean stuff on Netflix. It knows me.
- 20:08I never do anything dub. I never choose dub.
- 20:10I always choose Subs. And it started talk like the guy
- 20:14in the convenience store started talking and it was dubbed in
- 20:18English. And I was like, what the hell is
- 20:20this? I had to stop, put on the sub,
- 20:23make sure it was good, and then play it again.
- 20:26Did that happen for you too? It did, but I did not change it,
- 20:31no I. Left it and you watched the dub.
- 20:37I watched the dub with subtitles as well, which was hilarious to
- 20:41me because they would say something, but you would read
- 20:45something different. So that was fun killing me.
- 20:50I'm not, you know, taking points away from there.
- 20:54I'm not because that. And they just dumped it it, but
- 20:59it was, it was so funny to me that some of the things that
- 21:03they said didn't quite match, like the subtitle itself, like
- 21:09they would change around some words or stuff like that.
- 21:12So so I just wanted to get that out of the way.
- 21:16Jessica watched it the correct way, which is no dubs with
- 21:21subtitles, and I watched it with a dub and subtitles.
- 21:25I cannot working mistake by me. I was working mistake by me.
- 21:34But yeah, there's a couple things that like just kind of
- 21:42don't really make sense to me as to why they happened in the
- 21:46movie. And we'll talk about that in
- 21:48spoilers as well. But what's what's something that
- 21:51you wanted to mention? Before we get into that, though,
- 21:56I think it reminded me a lot of other movies.
- 21:58And maybe that's the biggest crime I think of this movie is
- 22:02that it is extremely derivative. And sort of, even if it's
- 22:05derivative and it's doing similar things as other movies,
- 22:11I think it's just not doing anything different, original,
- 22:16memorable. I agree with that because when
- 22:20you look at some of the movies that it kind of.
- 22:24Remind you of, like, you know we're talking about stuff like
- 22:28Atomic Blonde, Columbiana, Peppermint.
- 22:32God, I forgot that. Do you remember Peppermint?
- 22:34Peppermints, yes. With Jennifer Garner, yes.
- 22:38You know, the villainous Lady Vengeance.
- 22:42There was like quite a few movies where we have a female
- 22:46protagonist who is, you know, an assassin, a trained killer.
- 22:51Also, you can kind of draw some comparisons.
- 22:53Obviously we said John Wick taking the man from nowhere.
- 22:58Like there's a lot of movies that it's kind of drawing from
- 23:03but not doing it. Like you said, not really
- 23:07changing up the cliched manner of these type of movies and also
- 23:15just doing a poor job. Of copying some of those cliches
- 23:23because if you want to do a copy of something you're you got to
- 23:27do it at least at the same level of the thing you're copying.
- 23:31And I don't think this movie quite does it.
- 23:34So I don't want to lambast this movie fully.
- 23:37Like I think that there's some innovative stuff and watching
- 23:42like some of the fight scenes are are cool.
- 23:46I think there's a sense of a threat and.
- 23:49You can feel like the griminess of like the villain and I think
- 23:54it's very effective. That's really good for the
- 23:57movie. You need someone that you just
- 24:00hate and just cannot stand in a role like this and they did a
- 24:05good job of portraying the villain like that.
- 24:07So, so I want to say that before you know, we get into spoilers
- 24:11and all that, I think if you're looking for a similar movie
- 24:16where you know you got this really cool, interesting, very
- 24:23silent and stoic fighter, you know, assassin what have you
- 24:29going after, a larger cartel like system, something like
- 24:35that, It's the man from nowhere. I adore that movie.
- 24:40I don't have a single bad thing to say about it.
- 24:42It is amazing. And if you like, Oh my God,
- 24:47maybe like a combination of Taken and Leon the Professional.
- 24:52Ooh, OK, that's what the Man from Nowhere is.
- 24:55Yeah. There.
- 24:56OK. That's that's actually that's a
- 24:59good combination to have, yeah. That's a really good
- 25:02combination. I know, I know.
- 25:03And it's not that you can't have a stoic like main dude, because
- 25:07that is the man from nowhere. He's barely cracking any sort of
- 25:12emotion. Same with John Wick.
- 25:14John Wick is like a robot for a lot of the movie.
- 25:18Yeah, right. Like, he's not really OK.
- 25:21So I'm not, I don't think that necessarily her being this cold,
- 25:28unfeeling, like central lead is the issue because they do it in
- 25:33other movies. I just think maybe they just
- 25:35didn't build her right with the writing.
- 25:40Yeah. This is probably, and it's
- 25:43usually this goes against how I feel, but this is a movie that I
- 25:48think needed just a little bit more time in terms of like just
- 25:53establishing her character a little bit more the movie, you
- 25:58know what I like to, you know what I like is that there's
- 26:02usually a person in one of these movies that hypes up the
- 26:08central. Person like the protagonist,
- 26:11right? They haven't.
- 26:13Like the consider Rambo. The Colonel comes in and he's
- 26:16telling everyone in the town and the police force you don't know
- 26:18what you're doing. You need to back off.
- 26:21Now he's going, he's trained here, he's trained there.
- 26:25He grew up in the dirt. You don't understand.
- 26:26He's going to, he's going to mess y'all up and he's hyping up
- 26:30Rambo. And you don't really understand
- 26:33what Rambo's capable of until this person comes in and says
- 26:38you're gonna die if you keep coming at this person.
- 26:42Yeah, and I think that. And there wasn't a hype person.
- 26:45No, there wasn't in this movie at all.
- 26:48Even with something like taken, right?
- 26:51Once the authorities get involved and they start looking
- 26:55into the past of like, Liam Neeson's character, they do the
- 26:59whole profile of like, Oh my God, this guy is X.
- 27:02That's the same for the man from nowhere.
- 27:05They start looking into his background and they're like, the
- 27:07files are stealed, like, that's that sort of stuff that's builds
- 27:10him up, right. Plus John Wick, you have John
- 27:13Luguizamo. That's like, whose car did you
- 27:15steal? And it's like John and then he's
- 27:17like, Oh no. No, he slaps the kid, he talked
- 27:20on the phone with the dad and he says, well, your son stole John
- 27:25Mick's car and the the mafioso goes oh like all that is
- 27:31character building. Yeah, and like the way they
- 27:34would talk about him and like call him the Baba yaga.
- 27:37And just like all this crazy stuff, it builds A mythology,
- 27:41you know? Lore and mythology, that's what
- 27:45was missing from the character. Like if we would have known
- 27:49like. Oh like, oh shit.
- 27:51Don't mess with this person, you know.
- 27:54But like they kind of just toss it in in a in a brief
- 27:57conversation of like, oh I work security detail.
- 28:01You know it. That's not impressive.
- 28:05You know what is impressive is like if we had a character like
- 28:10are you hanging out with so and so do you know who she is?
- 28:16And like you know, like if they would have done something like
- 28:18that. Then you kind of get a sense of
- 28:21like, oh, that's all they had to do to put the hype person in
- 28:27there is have the CEO character who's like the opposite of the
- 28:32villain, right? The other hat coin, the other
- 28:34side of the coin be like who did you, who are you trying to kill?
- 28:40And like, it comes into view that it's this girl and he knows
- 28:44about her, or he's seen her in action or something like that.
- 28:47And he's like, you don't know what you've done.
- 28:48You could jeopardize everything, everything we've built, blah
- 28:52blah blah, like that's all you need.
- 28:53Yeah, exactly. You need someone who is afraid
- 28:57of the character before we know why you should be afraid.
- 29:01Yes, I think I've. I think I've caught something
- 29:05there. Plus, you just fix all the fight
- 29:07scenes because the fight scenes were very Nolan.
- 29:10Yes. Oh my God.
- 29:11Let's talk about this in spoilers for sure.
- 29:14Okay. So what we're gonna do now is
- 29:18we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna talk spoilers for
- 29:21Ballerina right after this. You wanna come in?
- 29:32All right, let's go ahead and let's talk spoilers for
- 29:34Ballerina. We left off on mentioning
- 29:38Christopher Nolan taking a stray here.
- 29:41Just randomly, but there, yes. So the big moment was the fight
- 29:47in the hotel, you know, between our hero and our villain.
- 29:53So Ox Joe versus pro Troy and bro, like the cameraman was.
- 30:01I hope they paid him well. With the amount of just like
- 30:03following all the different directions that every every
- 30:07single punch and kick had to have a camera movement, right?
- 30:12Yeah, it was too much because, like you, it was not cohesive
- 30:16enough to be able to be like, oh, what, what the hell are they
- 30:20doing right now? It was disorienting.
- 30:23Like I was having a hard time. Like did that punch lent I?
- 30:26And by the time like I thought that thought of, did that punch
- 30:29land? You know, they're doing
- 30:30something else. And I'm just like, wait, what
- 30:33happened there? And like, he was having a hard
- 30:34time with it. I know.
- 30:35But the one thing that I liked about that fight is how it
- 30:38started. Because he's like, groping her.
- 30:41She's supposedly drugged and she's pulling a knife out from
- 30:46under the pillow and they don't show, like what happens when she
- 30:50lunges forward. Right with the knife media
- 30:54thing. And they show his face in the
- 30:56mask because he's wearing a BDSM mask and he's got crazy eyes.
- 31:01Oh my God. And you see some blood fall on
- 31:03the bed, on the white sheets of the bed and you're like, oh, did
- 31:07she get him? They pan over.
- 31:09It's his hand. He caught the knife, which is
- 31:13and you're like, oh shit yeah. Yeah, see?
- 31:16Like, that's a cool. That was a good start.
- 31:19That's a good start to it. Then you know that entire fight,
- 31:24like, there's a couple of moments that I was like, oh,
- 31:26that looks cool. But then at the same time
- 31:28there's like too much that is just disoriented.
- 31:31Then we get like, added characters come in like where we
- 31:34get the guy with shotgun, like the with the weird haircut, like
- 31:39what was I thought it was like a worthy bro.
- 31:44Toward the explorer bro. Seriously, can you say shotgun?
- 31:49But like, he comes in and starts shooting up the bed and, you
- 31:54know, there's some cool moments where he's able to, she's able
- 31:57to, you know, take him out and then OK, so he's with the
- 32:02chainsaw. Yeah, the guy with the chainsaw,
- 32:04he comes, he starts running and there's a moment where the
- 32:09camera is like. Like from the outside looking in
- 32:13as they're running towards each other in the hallway, it kind of
- 32:16reminded me a little bit of like something that you kind of would
- 32:20see like in Scott Pilgrim when they do like a surreal look at
- 32:23at like the, you know, whatever is happening.
- 32:27And then it's like completely cut short with the door opening,
- 32:32the door open. Yeah.
- 32:33And then insert our high school student who is a victim of
- 32:38trafficking and who is like, basically stuck as a as a sex
- 32:43slave, right. Hotel, right?
- 32:45Which this is something that we should talk about real quick.
- 32:49Is that the the big thing about this movie is that the villain
- 32:53is part of this cartel that, you know, they deal in drugs, but
- 32:58they also deal in sex trafficking and Pro Choi in
- 33:03particular. He's basically like using the
- 33:07girls for his own fetishes and his own thing that he's doing.
- 33:13And not only that, he's into BDSM, he's into whips chains.
- 33:20They excite him. As Rihanna would say.
- 33:22I was waiting for it, not the Rihanna reference.
- 33:27But like you, were you you mentioned this earlier.
- 33:31In just the conversation when she opens the drawer?
- 33:35No, because when he. So I wanna make it clear that if
- 33:39you're into BDS, I'm fine. That's your thing again.
- 33:43But Rihanna gave you permission. So Rihanna gave you permission.
- 33:48So she's investigating in his house when he's out of the house
- 33:53and she opens this big armoire and it's full of BDSM toys with
- 34:00collars and all this stuff. And you're like, OK, like me, I
- 34:04think us as Westerners, we're like, all right, so he's into
- 34:09BDSM. Right.
- 34:10Like, he's so happy to agree. I don't want to speak for an
- 34:13entire country, but perhaps that moment is really shocking for
- 34:18Korean audience. It could be.
- 34:21I don't know. I'm just talking out loud.
- 34:25It was for me. It was when she opened the
- 34:28drawer and it was an organized, labeled row upon row of USB
- 34:37drives that I was like. It's like the air got sucked out
- 34:44of the room. Yes, yes, so.
- 34:48So the part that he was recording these women, drugging
- 34:52these women, you had to know at that point that it was without
- 34:55their consent that it was, you know, he was sexually assaulting
- 34:59these women. How often do you run in a movie?
- 35:03Do you see when somebody has a flash drive that it's a good
- 35:07thing, right? Right.
- 35:10It's always this like, terrible thing.
- 35:12Like what's on the flash drive, right?
- 35:14Right. It could be like the secrets
- 35:17that a government doesn't want to get out.
- 35:19There's never been a good USB drive.
- 35:22I don't think so. I do not think so.
- 35:25Anyway, so so anyway, this, his crime of drugging these women
- 35:32and videotaping them reminds me of a of a it was either a serial
- 35:38rapist or a serial killer, and it might be a combination of two
- 35:42different criminals that I'm thinking of.
- 35:45One had taken video like it was videotapes.
- 35:50At that point when I watched this documentary, they were
- 35:53saying how all of the police force had to sit there and watch
- 35:57these videos and try and identify the victims.
- 36:00And nobody wanted to come forward because then it was very
- 36:05similar to how they were enticing or coercing these young
- 36:12women into being sex slaves. It's like, oh, well then we'll
- 36:16show all of this footage that we have of you to your friends and
- 36:21family and it's going to ruin your life, which is so, yeah, so
- 36:27that was the impotent that was the big hang up in the case.
- 36:32In the real life, case was no, but no victims wanted to come
- 36:37forward because it would ruin their life.
- 36:39They had kids. They had a whole family.
- 36:41They had no recollection that this happened to them because
- 36:44they were drugged at the time. So it was very jarring and
- 36:48shocking and traumatic for them. And they didn't want to press
- 36:51charges because then their name would be out there.
- 36:54And I don't know if you had ever heard of this type of, you know,
- 37:00exploitation. Not like I think the only thing
- 37:04that comes anywhere close to something like that here in the
- 37:08United States that I've heard is just usually what we deem as
- 37:14revenge porn. Which is kind of a guy will
- 37:19release like videos and pictures of you know stuff that was sent
- 37:24to him by a by a girl. And then you know, as an act of
- 37:28malice, as an act of revenge for whatever stupid reason he deems
- 37:36that it's yeah, I should do this.
- 37:39That's the only comparison that I have.
- 37:41And and that's super embarrassing for.
- 37:44The girl in that situation, because, you know, those weren't
- 37:49meant for everyone. That was meant for the person
- 37:52she sent them to. But in the case that we're
- 37:55talking about in the movie and in the case of real life
- 37:57circumstances, this is something that was against their will, you
- 38:04know? But even in that case, it's
- 38:06still, you know, shocking and traumatic to have that video go.
- 38:13Public for everyone to see, you know, Right.
- 38:17So that's why that high school student was like, that's why I'm
- 38:20here, because otherwise they would send this video out.
- 38:24Like it doesn't matter that she's a victim.
- 38:29It doesn't matter. Like it was like, you know, this
- 38:32victim blaming, this part of victim blaming that is very
- 38:37evident throughout this movie and throughout real life.
- 38:41Like in in real life this happens too.
- 38:43And I wish that I knew the name of the serial killer or the name
- 38:47of the documentary. I feel like it was the, I feel
- 38:51like it was the Huasong serial murders that I watched the
- 38:54documentary on. And the serial killer's name is
- 38:57Eton J, and he was in his 20s when he was committing those
- 39:01murders. Yeah, but don't quote me on
- 39:06that. It might sounds terrible to say,
- 39:08but it might have been another. Might have been another serial
- 39:11rapist killer, yeah. So I was wondering if you had
- 39:15seen that before because it felt so familiar to me.
- 39:18Not specifically that interesting.
- 39:21I've definitely heard of stories of like, you know, sex
- 39:24trafficking rings and and stuff like that, but I've never heard
- 39:28details of that where they're kind of.
- 39:33Blackmailing the victim, right, Right.
- 39:36They were blackmailing the girls into staying in this world, in
- 39:41this life, which is really sad. I don't know if they maybe try
- 39:47to do too much in the movie like they had.
- 39:51So they had this guy who was serial.
- 39:57What do you even say? It's it was a sexual assault.
- 40:00Slash taking video of them. Yeah, drugging them.
- 40:04I mean, what is that like 4 different, three or four
- 40:07different crimes? And he had so many of them.
- 40:12And then on top of that, he was in charge of the human
- 40:17trafficking. Right.
- 40:19Or a portion. Of the human trafficking for
- 40:21this gang. Which crazy stuff when they when
- 40:26they introduced that in the movie?
- 40:28I was like, oh, this is like something, some, this is more
- 40:34and I thought that it would lead to something bigger towards the
- 40:38end, which. So I I want to take this as a
- 40:42transition into how the movie establishes the villains, but I
- 40:49don't think it does it very well.
- 40:51So pro Troy is not the big bad. No, the big Bad is like the
- 40:57cartel, the mafia of this group led by Joe, CEO Joe.
- 41:05And he, you know, he has like this menacing, he's very cold,
- 41:11businesslike type of leader, you know, where it's like, you know,
- 41:16I'm going to take over that for you.
- 41:18And he's like, what? What do you mean?
- 41:19And he's like, like, he laughs stuff off because you think it's
- 41:25unclear what he was doing. Like Pro, Troy was doing drug
- 41:31business on the side outside of the regulation of the gang.
- 41:36Right, exactly. Then what was the drug he was
- 41:39producing with Myung Sheik, the pharmacist?
- 41:43Was that those little fish shaped?
- 41:45Ones that's exactly what it was because they they show inside
- 41:49the fish shape. They never say.
- 41:52They never say what it is. OK, OK.
- 41:53I thought I had missed it. So I think it was like a like a
- 41:59reefer. Like, you know what I'm saying?
- 42:00Like. Right, because the best
- 42:03inclination, right, the best inclination that you get is
- 42:07towards the end when she walks into the lab where they're
- 42:11growing the stuff and the plants there.
- 42:16Some of them look like weed, but.
- 42:19It could have been a little bit more.
- 42:21It could have been something along the lines of some type of
- 42:24hallucinogetic, but I think it's more along the lines what you're
- 42:29saying, which is some type of date rape because a lot of the,
- 42:35you know, just tying the two together you you have these
- 42:39drugs because with the sex trafficking that showed up for
- 42:43the drug drop on the bridge. Yeah, they they did not look.
- 42:48They just look like, yeah, due to, like, just trying to get
- 42:52some drugs. Like one guy was on a bicycle.
- 42:55Yeah. So no, they don't look like they
- 42:57showed up in a nice like vehicle or anything.
- 43:02They look like, I don't know. And then I think he threw out
- 43:07one of the plastic fishes after he had used it right on her,
- 43:12presumably her drink when all two goes to the the hotel with
- 43:16him. Yes.
- 43:18So yeah, so then I believe that it is a date rape type of drug,
- 43:23which what the hell does that say?
- 43:26That there he's producing a date rape drug in the shape of like a
- 43:29little plastic fish and advertising it as sushi.
- 43:36Right. Yeah.
- 43:38Like because? He asked.
- 43:40She asked, I think in the DMS and insta DMS.
- 43:44He asked her how many soy sauce packets do you want indicating
- 43:49like how many what? What's your order?
- 43:51Right, exactly. And she just says, oh, I just
- 43:54want one soy sauce packet And he like, leaves the chat.
- 43:57He leaves the chat. He's like something about the
- 44:00one soy one date rape fish packet that was like, OK, this
- 44:06is, this is not a real yeah. Well, what triggered me to?
- 44:11That being more like a code word was when you go to the page and
- 44:17he's like, I'm doing sushi orders, I only take Bitcoin.
- 44:21I was like, Oh yeah, there's some shitty shit here.
- 44:25Like anybody who's like, I only take Bitcoin.
- 44:28Red flag. The red flag.
- 44:30Yeah, red flag. OK.
- 44:33So I want to talk about the gun dealers that we meet in this
- 44:40room before we do. Oh no, you know, let's talk
- 44:43about the gun dealers and then we'll circle back.
- 44:45Let's circle back on the romance.
- 44:47OK. Yeah, we definitely have to.
- 44:49So when it comes to the gun dealers, I found it to be
- 44:55somewhat superfluous the way they introduced these
- 45:01characters. A bit kooky, like it was kind of
- 45:05fun. I.
- 45:06Liked it? It's a little fun, but I will
- 45:09say that. It is an easy way to explain,
- 45:13like checkoffs, guns and flamethrowers.
- 45:17Yes, the yes. Yes.
- 45:19And I was just like, oh, OK, so we're gonna get a flamethrower
- 45:22in the end somewhere. I died laughing when this little
- 45:27grandma, Kim Yongk, they had her with a flamethrower.
- 45:31Yes, she's like this was meant to kill Wasps, Wasps.
- 45:34And I'm like what is going? I have still had so many
- 45:37questions. And then she just fires the
- 45:40flamethrower and it's going like 100 feet farther than they are.
- 45:46I was dying. Apart I couldn't help but think
- 45:49of the line from Once Upon a time in Hollywood when Leo's
- 45:55testing it and he's like anything we can do about this
- 45:58heat and the guy's like it's a flamethrower.
- 46:01But that is, is it true that that was an improv?
- 46:05Like, not improv. But that was him, his character
- 46:08talk like Leo DiCaprio asking the person what can we do about
- 46:13this heat? Cuz it's so hot.
- 46:15Yeah, apparently that was anything we could do about this
- 46:19heat. It's a flame.
- 46:20Just talking in character. Oh my God, I love it.
- 46:24It's a flamethrower, OK? But yeah, I think it's a clever
- 46:27way. It's it brings some levity to a
- 46:31dark topic that was happening in the movie in terms of everything
- 46:34going on. So it was nice.
- 46:35Do you know why it's so kooky? I think.
- 46:38Why do you think? Well, you know that guns are
- 46:41illegal in Korea. OK, you didn't.
- 46:45I didn't quite know that no guns are.
- 46:48That's why everybody got knives. Oh, that's why does that make a
- 46:55lot of sense? Pulling out knives?
- 46:58Yeah, got it. Got it.
- 47:00Got it. Even the gangsters are pulling
- 47:02out knives. Knives, because this is
- 47:05ordinately difficult to get a hold of guns in Korea.
- 47:08OK, OK. So which is the fact that these
- 47:10people have like these old guns and everything, right?
- 47:14OK. It's clicking.
- 47:16It clicks, it clicks. OK got it right.
- 47:19That's why I didn't find it that like out outlet.
- 47:22I mean, it was outlandish, but I didn't find it out like outside
- 47:27the bounds of this really can't happen in the story about this
- 47:32revenge that's been about that's about to happen, so.
- 47:36Got it. OK, let's go ahead and circle
- 47:39back to what we wanted to mention because we I mentioned
- 47:42this earlier. Yeah, I agree that the girl
- 47:46Mans. I thought they were lovers.
- 47:48Or at least Oktu thought that they could be more.
- 47:53That she maybe loved her. Loved me Me the ballerina.
- 47:59The movie kind of dancing with it.
- 48:02Dancing with it, yeah. Yeah, because maybe it's just
- 48:06the way it's viewed in Korea. I don't know if samesex
- 48:11relationships are something that is as prevalent as it is in the
- 48:16United States. I would say no.
- 48:19Probably not So probably not showcasing that in a movie, you
- 48:24know, maybe it's not their priority, but they they
- 48:31definitely hint at it. The color scheming whenever
- 48:33they're together of you know, dancing between blue and red,
- 48:39making it purple. Binary lighting.
- 48:41The the Yeah, exactly. The binary lighting.
- 48:44Like it's. It's really obvious that Oak Jew
- 48:49has an emotional and somewhat romantic attachment to the
- 48:56ballerina. Yeah, but then you know, the
- 48:59movie knows when to pull back on.
- 49:01Like, we're not going to show you anything.
- 49:03You know, we're not going to confirm or deny.
- 49:06Exactly. We're not even going to show
- 49:08them, like, really hug that much.
- 49:10Like they're going to get close in a photo and you know, yeah.
- 49:16That that's as close as we'll get.
- 49:18Yeah. Photo Booth stuff.
- 49:19Like Photo Booth. When you think Photo Booth in a
- 49:22movie, that is like romantic stuff happening between 2
- 49:26characters usually. Yeah.
- 49:28Or the beginnings of a romance. So the fact that these two
- 49:31characters did that, and you're telling me, oh, you know what it
- 49:37what it is, it's those women who later in life.
- 49:43They're constantly traveling with their best friend.
- 49:47I put that best friend in quotations.
- 49:49Get out. I was like, yeah, this is my
- 49:51best friend Nora. We've been, we've been friends
- 49:53for 10 years and we go everywhere together and it's
- 49:56like HM, stop with the means. Yeah, you guys are very close
- 50:03now and friendly. HM.
- 50:06OK, so I fully believe that I saw a meet.
- 50:10Cute. For sure 100%.
- 50:13Yes, the bakery when you get the cake.
- 50:15Yeah, the cake. Choc That's a be.
- 50:16Cute. That's a be.
- 50:18Cute. That is easily something that
- 50:20you would see in a romantic comedy.
- 50:23She goes in for a cake and the ballerina recognizes her.
- 50:28She's like, we went to middle school together, whatever,
- 50:31whatever class, and is excited to see her.
- 50:35And she's like, oh, like kind of taken aback.
- 50:37They eat. Afterwards, they go out.
- 50:40They go celebrating your birthday.
- 50:42Celebrating the birthday. They go to like art exhibits
- 50:45together. They go to the beach together,
- 50:50they go swimming together, You know, like, yo, you're telling
- 50:57me they're not a couple? Like, come on, come on.
- 50:59Best friends, my ass. Anyway, so the movie dances with
- 51:05it. I think I would have enjoyed the
- 51:07movie more if they had just said, oh, they were lovers.
- 51:10Yeah, I've been like, yes, yes. She's avenging the loss of her
- 51:15love, yeah. Like that, but then they don't
- 51:18make it make sense of why. How long were they out of touch?
- 51:24What the hell was Ochu doing? Why did she quit her job?
- 51:28Yeah, like they don't go like John Wick is the same way.
- 51:31Like, what is he doing day in and day out?
- 51:33Nothing. No, but.
- 51:36Because he quit his job, right? He quit his job.
- 51:38He retired like you understand why he did it as well.
- 51:42Like he found the love. By the time you get to the end
- 51:44of the movie, you understand like what his job was.
- 51:47But in this movie, you still don't fully comprehend what was
- 51:51she doing. What was she doing?
- 51:52How did she She was guarding VIP's.
- 51:55OK, Kevin Costner, tell me more. Yeah, like, I want to know more
- 51:58about the world that you were in.
- 52:01So it makes sense that you. Are this amazing killer in the
- 52:05world that we're watching but we don't get enough.
- 52:08It's I don't understand how, because here's the Also the rub
- 52:12for me is even if they find they don't admit that they're that
- 52:16they're a lesbian couple, Fine, but then how the hell does the
- 52:20ballerina know that Okhju can exact revenge for her on her
- 52:25behalf? How does she know?
- 52:27Does she know that she had all these skills?
- 52:29Has she ever seen her in action? Does Oak, do you ever open up
- 52:31and tell her about what she did as a bodyguard?
- 52:35I mean, maybe I think I was a bodyguard, but you don't see
- 52:40that. I don't get it, you know.
- 52:42This movie can be summarized with this sentence.
- 52:47We didn't get enough. And you you can say that about
- 52:52plot points. You could say that about.
- 52:54The action scenes, you could say that about quite a few things.
- 52:59Yeah, we did not get enough. And it's a shame because I think
- 53:04the movie has the potential to be like this, like cult classic
- 53:08following that you, you know, Pete, when people start saying,
- 53:13oh, have you seen this Korean movie?
- 53:16Like, it could be in that sentence.
- 53:17But, and here's my thing, too, is that when I saw the trailer,
- 53:20I was like, oh, this is that movie that they're doing in the
- 53:25John Wick franchise. I thought it was going to be
- 53:27that spin off the ballerina. Right.
- 53:31That was also confusion there. Yes, because they titled it
- 53:35after something we know is coming.
- 53:38You know, a movie that's coming down the line.
- 53:41A spin off for those who don't know.
- 53:42Yeah, John Wick 4 movies in the franchise, but it's getting a
- 53:46spin off called the Ballerina and it stars Anna the Adamus as
- 53:51the ballerina. And if you saw John Wick 3
- 53:54Parabellum, there is a scene where there's a ballerina in the
- 53:58I think. It was the theater in New York.
- 54:01It was like a Russian ballet. Yeah.
- 54:03Yeah, it was still in New York. OK.
- 54:04I thought he was in Belarus. Not yet.
- 54:08Not yet. At that moment.
- 54:09So anyway, that ballerina is the subject of the spinoff anyway.
- 54:14Right, So Long story short, I thought this movie was related
- 54:17to the John Wick franchise, and it's not.
- 54:21And so then when we found out that it's not, we thought, oh,
- 54:25they beat him to the punch by doing something similar and
- 54:29calling it ballerina, right? But like the main character is
- 54:35not the ballerina I wished. I could wish that she was the
- 54:39ballerina. And that's how they had their
- 54:41they started their lesbian romance was that they were both
- 54:43ballerinas in the same company. Like I would have been, you
- 54:46know, like Black Swan type shit. Yeah, some Black Swan stuff.
- 54:49Although I did get some like, you know, like hints of Black
- 54:52Swan, you know, early on, like the way the camera was moving
- 54:58around this, that central ballerina character.
- 55:01Like it it was like kind of intense.
- 55:03And so, like, you know, in my head I was like, huh, Black
- 55:06Swan, you know, So OK, that is perfect.
- 55:11I don't. I don't know if I have anything
- 55:17else. Do you have?
- 55:18Oh my God, we forgot to rate this out of five soldier
- 55:21bottles. Yes, yes, we did.
- 55:23This will be the last thing we do and then we'll get out of
- 55:25here. OK, So what did you rate it out
- 55:28of five Soldier bottles? I would have rated it A/C like
- 55:32on a grade level because we've been doing grade levels on
- 55:35Always A Critic on Always A Critic podcast.
- 55:37But like for soldier bottles, I guess 2 1/2. 2, 1/2 that would
- 55:42put it maybe three if I was, you know.
- 55:45Being he's so pretty, like it's so pretty to look at, right?
- 55:49Gotcha. I don't know.
- 55:50And the soundtrack was really good.
- 55:52Yeah, soundtrack was pretty good as well, I think.
- 55:55I'm doing it 1 1/2 Get. Get out.
- 55:58Yeah, get. Half.
- 56:00I have too many complaints about the movie, is the problem.
- 56:05Like, I saw the potential. That's why.
- 56:07Like I I had the first bottle and I was like, OK, we're
- 56:10rolling. And then, you know, because I
- 56:13like the intro sequence too. I was really excited after the
- 56:16intro sequence, which we didn't talk about the convenience store
- 56:20fight. Yes, great opening sequence for
- 56:23our character. I loved it.
- 56:26And the movie kind of just like slows down for some reason.
- 56:30Yeah, I don't know why. An hour and a half and some for
- 56:34some reason you slow down. You know, I have to say that I
- 56:38list. For some reason you slow down.
- 56:40I liked that the ballerina was at the end of the movie because
- 56:45they had that flashback scene where she was like, I want to be
- 56:48reborn as a fish after I die and whatever.
- 56:52And then at the end you see the ballerina under the.
- 56:54Water under the water in the sea.
- 56:58Very, very. I love that visual.
- 57:00Like, it's very poetic. And like, I don't know, it
- 57:04worked. That worked.
- 57:05So that is our review. Yeah, ballerina.
- 57:11We had too much fun with this. It's supposed to be spooky
- 57:13season and we're like laughing our way through this.
- 57:16Naked movie. Now something that is spooky is
- 57:22human trafficking. Totally.
- 57:24Oh my God. Absolutely.
- 57:26But this movie? Not so much.
- 57:28Not so much. Well, once they had like the CEO
- 57:31character with this severe middle part.
- 57:37Oh yeah, like his hair and it's like.
- 57:41Slicked back I was. I was like, that's a choice
- 57:44that. Is a choice for your hairstyle.
