Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / John Moffat: Bovine disease vaccine research lead on the impact of Bovine Viral Diarrhoea on costs
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Research underway on a new vaccine to prevent prevalent bow
- 0:03Speaker 1: bine disease costs our farmers one hundred and ninety million
- 0:06Speaker 1: dollars every year. Three vaccines currently available are only sixty
- 0:10Speaker 1: to sixty five percent effective. So MPI are backing this
- 0:12Speaker 1: new research, which is led by John Moffatt, who is
- 0:15Speaker 1: with us. John, very good morning to you.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Is this exciting?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Oh? Reasonably yeah? And the violence think yes.
- 0:25Speaker 1: The reason I asked the question, are you on the
- 0:27Speaker 1: verge of something or is this sort of a fishing expedition?
- 0:32Speaker 2: Well, no, it's far more than a fifteen expedition, Mike.
- 0:36Speaker 2: The technology we're using is globally is reasonably familiar, and
- 0:43Speaker 2: we're adapting that technology for the New Zealand environment.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Really okay, so there is stuff out there that is
- 0:50Speaker 1: potentially more effective that if we adapted to us, then
- 0:53Speaker 1: we hit paid it.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yes, potentially with all signs. You can't be absolutely, but yes,
- 1:00Speaker 2: exactly right, Miche.
- 1:01Speaker 1: What's the time frame on this.
- 1:06Speaker 2: All going? Well? We hope to be in the marketplace
- 1:10Speaker 2: registered in twenty twenty eight.
- 1:14Speaker 1: And does that have commercial implications globally? I mean, how
- 1:17Speaker 1: do these things work with NPI involved of you crack
- 1:19Speaker 1: a nut, do you get to own it, clip the ticket,
- 1:23Speaker 1: sell it, all of that sort of stuff, or you
- 1:24Speaker 1: don't work that way.
- 1:28Speaker 2: The partnership is a cross through organization, so MPI is
- 1:32Speaker 2: just one of the partners. Agra Health and jim Based
- 1:36Speaker 2: Animal Health Company is providing the majority of the support
- 1:41Speaker 2: for this project. So it ends up that they own
- 1:44Speaker 2: the rights to it and then we can make it
- 1:48Speaker 2: global essentially, but it's principally designed for the New Zealand farmers.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Okay, of all the things farmers face, where does bovine
- 1:59Speaker 1: fit and the problems around it and the lack of
- 2:01Speaker 1: effectiveness of the current vaccines, where.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Does it fit?
- 2:05Speaker 1: I mean, is this a major findings?
- 2:08Speaker 2: Are incredibly complex thing with all sorts of different threats,
- 2:12Speaker 2: you know, the price of fertilizer and fuel, etcetera. And
- 2:16Speaker 2: another animal health diseases as viral infection is probably one
- 2:20Speaker 2: of the most important that we deal with in the
- 2:23Speaker 2: cattle industry in this country. To put it in a perspective,
- 2:26Speaker 2: you know, it ranks up there with probably arguably with
- 2:29Speaker 2: things like internal parasites. As an infectious disease issue.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Well, we wish you the best with it. I hope
- 2:36Speaker 1: it goes well. We'll talk again when you crack it.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Nice to talk to you, John Moffatt. For more from
