- 0:11Hello friends, it's Shaun here and it is Wednesday.
- 0:15It's the 1st of October. It is a new month, a new book.
- 0:19Everywhere you look, things are starting fresh.
- 0:22How good is that? Today we are going to as well as
- 0:26cracking open the second month of springtime.
- 0:29Oh, where it actually starts to warm up in this part of the
- 0:32world. That's good news for everyone.
- 0:34We are also going to open up this book of Romans, how Romans
- 0:38are that old chestnut. This is an interesting book that
- 0:43is often kind of read with maybe not the right lens.
- 0:48Many people read it as like this definitive summary of all of
- 0:53Paul's theology, this master document that everything else
- 0:56falls underneath. Well, back in the day, that's
- 1:01certainly how it was viewed. But now theologians tend to look
- 1:04at it more differently. They say, no, this was a letter
- 1:07written to a certain audience at a certain time for a certain
- 1:11occasion. It's not necessarily his last
- 1:13will and testament. This was written in about 55 AD
- 1:17when Paul was in Corinth and under the the decree of the
- 1:22emperor, all of the Jewish Christians were were kicked out
- 1:26of Rome. The Roman emperor said you guys
- 1:28are causing all this kerfuffle believing in this new way, get
- 1:32out of Rome. So they all had to leave and
- 1:34then Neuro came into power and said no, it's alright friends,
- 1:37you come back into Rome, you're allowed.
- 1:39And when they returned, they found this church that had grown
- 1:43but grown full of Gentiles, which was not good news if you
- 1:47were one of the Jewish Christians who had left and
- 1:51returned, say there was all sorts of division and conflict
- 1:54in this church. So Paul writes this letter to
- 1:58encourage unity. And the irony is, friends, over
- 2:01the years, all of the details in this book, which is written to
- 2:05encourage unity, really has been used by a church to argue
- 2:09different points on different arguments and and kind of create
- 2:13division. So let us put on that lens of
- 2:17this being written to draw our church together where we can all
- 2:22find a place for each other and find our commonality in faith in
- 2:26Jesus as we read together Romans chapter 1.
- 2:39This letter is from Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, chosen by
- 2:45God to be an apostle and sent out to preach his good news.
- 2:49God promised this good news long ago through his prophets and the
- 2:52Holy Scriptures. The good news is about his Son
- 2:57in his earthly life. He was born into King David's
- 3:00family line, and he was shown to be the Son of God when he was
- 3:03raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit, He is
- 3:07Jesus Christ our Lord. Through Christ, God has given us
- 3:12the privilege and authority as apostles to tell Gentiles
- 3:16everywhere what God has done for them so they will believe and
- 3:21obey Him, bringing glory to his name.
- 3:25And you are included among those Gentiles who have been called to
- 3:28belong to Jesus Christ. I'm writing to all of you in
- 3:32Rome who are loved by God and are called to be his own holy
- 3:37people. May God our Father and the Lord
- 3:40Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
- 3:45Let me say first that I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all
- 3:50of you because your faith in Him has been talked about all over
- 3:54the world. God knows how often I pray for
- 3:57you. Day and night I bring you and
- 4:00your needs in prayer to God, whom I serve with all my heart
- 4:04by spreading the good news about His Son.
- 4:07One of the things I always pray for is the opportunity, God
- 4:11willing, to come at last to see you, for I long to visit you so
- 4:15I can bring you some spiritual gift that will help you grow
- 4:19strong in the Lord when we get together.
- 4:23I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be
- 4:26encouraged by yours. I want you to know, dear
- 4:29brothers and sisters, that I planned many times to visit you,
- 4:33but I was prevented until now. I want to work among you and see
- 4:37spiritual fruit, just as I've seen among the Gentiles.
- 4:42For I have a great sense of obligation to people in both the
- 4:45civilised world and the rest of the world, to the educated and
- 4:50uneducated alike. So I am eager to come to you in
- 4:54Rome too, to preach the good news.
- 4:57For I am not ashamed of this good news about Christ.
- 5:01It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes,
- 5:06the Jew 1st and also the Gentile.
- 5:09This good news tells us how God makes us right in His sight.
- 5:14This is accomplished from start to finish by faith.
- 5:18As the Scriptures say. It is through faith that a
- 5:21righteous person has life. But God shows His anger from
- 5:26heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the
- 5:30truth by their wickedness. They know the truth about God
- 5:34because He has made it obvious to them forever.
- 5:37Since the world was created, people have seen the earth and
- 5:41sky. Through everything God made,
- 5:45they can clearly see His invisible qualities, His eternal
- 5:49power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not
- 5:54knowing God. Yes, they know God, but they
- 5:58wouldn't worship him as God or even give him thanks.
- 6:01And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was
- 6:05like. As a result, their minds became
- 6:08dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they
- 6:12instead became utter fools and instead of worshipping the
- 6:16glorious, ever living God, they worship idols made to look like
- 6:21mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.
- 6:25So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their
- 6:28hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and
- 6:32degraded things with each other's bodies.
- 6:35They traded the truth about God for a lie.
- 6:39So they worshipped and served the things God created instead
- 6:43of the Creator Himself who is worthy of eternal praise, are
- 6:48men. That is why God abandoned them
- 6:51to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against
- 6:55the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with
- 6:59each other. And the men, instead of having
- 7:02normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each
- 7:06other. Men did shameful things with
- 7:09other men and as a result of this sin, they suffered within
- 7:12themselves the penalty they deserved.
- 7:16Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, He abandoned
- 7:19them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that
- 7:23should never be done. Their lives became full of every
- 7:27kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarrelling,
- 7:33deception, malicious behaviour and gossip.
- 7:38They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and
- 7:42boastful. They invent new ways of sinning,
- 7:47and they disobey their parents. They refuse to understand, break
- 7:51their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy.
- 7:56They know God's justice requires that those who do these things
- 8:00deserve to die, yet they do them anyway.
- 8:03Worse yet, they encourage others to do them too.
- 8:17Jesus, you certainly call us to live a certain way.
- 8:21You call us to reflect you and your Kingdom, for the fruits of
- 8:26your Spirit to grow and be evident in our lives.
- 8:30But Lord, as that happens, as we are transformed to be more and
- 8:34more like you, Lord, I pray that it's your mercy and your love
- 8:39that grows most of all, so that we never place ourselves on a
- 8:43throne of judgement, but that we always love, that we always
- 8:49reach out, that we always point people to you and your love for
- 8:54them. You are a glorious, gracious
- 8:58God, and I thank you for your Kingdom into which everyone is
- 9:02invited, loved, and cherished by you, their Maker and their Lord.
- 9:09I pray all of this in your wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
