- 0:09Your travels have brought you to the Surfing
- 0:11Your Edge podcast, where we explore what it
- 0:14takes to create the bigger, bolder, badass life
- 0:17you know you were born for.
- 0:19Not a life that simply looks good on
- 0:21paper, and not another spin on the self
- 0:24-help hamster wheel.
- 0:26If you're ready for more joy, more peace,
- 0:28and more contribution, you're in the right place.
- 0:32I'm Kristine Goad, the Surfing Your Edge coach.
- 0:35Let's get surfing.
- 0:38Hello, and welcome to episode 5 of the
- 0:42Surfing Your Edge podcast.
- 0:44Today, I want to talk to you a
- 0:45little bit about my vision for why we
- 0:49are bothering to do this, right?
- 0:51Not everybody needs to have a podcast, so
- 0:54what made me think that maybe I should?
- 0:58So let's talk just a tiny bit about
- 1:01what we've covered so far.
- 1:03Surfing Your Edge, in the way that I
- 1:06think about it, is standing on the edge
- 1:09of where you are and what's possible, right?
- 1:13It's standing a little bit farther out on
- 1:18the edge of your comfort zone, and staying
- 1:20there a little longer than you may want
- 1:22to, so that you actually start to expand
- 1:26your comfort zone a little bit more.
- 1:29And the reason I think you should do
- 1:31that is because there's a great quote from
- 1:36George Adair that says, everything you wanted is
- 1:41sitting on the other side of fear.
- 1:44And I am not telling you that you
- 1:47have to overcome your fear, because I really
- 1:50don't think we do that.
- 1:52I don't think fearless is a thing.
- 1:55I think fear is there, and you do
- 1:59it anyway, right?
- 2:00So surfing your edge, in my world, is
- 2:04a way of learning to make friends with
- 2:08your fear, and really appreciating that it serves
- 2:12a big purpose, right?
- 2:14It's there to keep you safe, but it's
- 2:17also there to show you the way forward
- 2:21into growth.
- 2:22And a lot of people treat fear like
- 2:26it's a stop sign, when it's actually just
- 2:28a sign that's saying, keep going, it's that
- 2:31direction, you've got it, right?
- 2:34So that is what surfing your edge is
- 2:37for me, and why I think it's important
- 2:40that you do it.
- 2:40If you're here on this planet, you've got
- 2:42more to do, right?
- 2:44So instead of sitting here being afraid of
- 2:47everything, and saying one day you'll take care
- 2:49of that, one day you'll do this, I
- 2:52would really love it if you'd take a
- 2:54step toward it today.
- 2:57So if you haven't yet taken that step
- 2:59forward, we've also talked a little bit about
- 3:02some of the reasons why.
- 3:04There are internal reasons.
- 3:06We've all been conditioned by the time we're
- 3:11adults to start thinking about what our limitations
- 3:16are, right?
- 3:17We look more at what our limitations are
- 3:21than what our possibilities are.
- 3:23And the older we get, I tend to
- 3:25find that becomes ever more true.
- 3:28And you'll get those people who are feeling
- 3:33like, oh, my time to do that was
- 3:3620 years ago, I've lost my shot, I
- 3:38can't do it.
- 3:39We've also got people who are feeling like
- 3:42they're not ready to take that step.
- 3:44They may never be ready, right?
- 3:48And that's the thing, we are never ready.
- 3:51And if we are, we've waited too long.
- 3:53You'll hear me say that again and again.
- 3:57So obviously we've got all of these ideas
- 4:01about who we are and how we should
- 4:03behave and how the world works and how
- 4:07things are done.
- 4:08And we've internalized a bunch of those.
- 4:11We've also got people out in the world
- 4:13happily policing those boundaries for us, telling you,
- 4:17oh, no, you can't do that.
- 4:18That's not right for you.
- 4:20You should do this, right?
- 4:22That's one of the things that people love
- 4:24to tell you.
- 4:25Oh, you're interested in this?
- 4:27Well, then you should do this.
- 4:29And it's like, no, that's not what I
- 4:32want to do.
- 4:34I want to do this.
- 4:36And we learn to make, I call it
- 4:40reality sizing your dreams.
- 4:41We learn to make smaller visions, right?
- 4:45We're afraid to go for the big thing
- 4:47that we really, really want.
- 4:49So we bring it down several levels and
- 4:53we go for something that's in the right
- 4:55direction, but that doesn't really take us all
- 4:59the way to what we want.
- 5:01Oh, I've got to tell you something.
- 5:05You know, I like to go on tangents.
- 5:09And it's a tangent that we should go
- 5:13on.
- 5:16Psychology research is starting to show that it
- 5:20is not the ideas you have about your
- 5:24past that determine who you are in the
- 5:28moment.
- 5:28It's your ideas about your future, right?
- 5:32What you think is possible for you is
- 5:36much more powerful in determining how you're going
- 5:39to behave today, the choices you're going to
- 5:42make, the words you're going to say out
- 5:44loud.
- 5:46What you believe is possible, what you believe
- 5:49is a true potential for you, that's the
- 5:54power, right?
- 5:55We think, oh, this happened and this happened
- 5:57and this happened and I was raised to
- 5:59be this way and my parents were this
- 6:01way and that's why I am the way
- 6:03I am.
- 6:03And that is true, right?
- 6:05We have been influenced by all of those
- 6:07things.
- 6:07But the true predictor of how you're going
- 6:11to behave tomorrow or this morning or today,
- 6:15whatever, is what you're thinking about, what you're
- 6:19thinking is possible for you in the future.
- 6:22If you think you're going to go surfing
- 6:25with me in Panama one day, then, you
- 6:30know, you'll be making decisions that lead toward
- 6:32that.
- 6:33If you think you're going to stay at
- 6:37the job you're in for the rest of
- 6:39your life and retire and, you know, sit
- 6:42on the couch with your spouse and watch
- 6:44television, you're going to be making decisions that
- 6:47lead toward that future.
- 6:49So, coming back to where we were before
- 6:52that little side trip, I really hope that
- 6:56you will come on this journey with me
- 6:57because I love watching people's ideas of who
- 7:04they are and what's possible for them explode.
- 7:08And I am really good, actually, at asking
- 7:12the kinds of questions that get you to
- 7:15think a little bit differently and start to
- 7:18open up what's possible.
- 7:22I lead an annual event that's my Ignite
- 7:27event and I routinely see people's minds explode
- 7:33when they think about what is possible for
- 7:36their year, what is possible for them to
- 7:39aim toward.
- 7:40And I would love it if you'd come
- 7:44along and aim for something a little bit
- 7:49more bold, a little bigger, a little badassier
- 7:53than what you might have woken up this
- 7:56morning thinking was in your future.
- 7:59And the reason I'm doing this now is
- 8:02because I feel like the world has sped
- 8:05up and it is becoming more chaotic and
- 8:09the things we thought were true are not
- 8:14holding to be true.
- 8:18The future that our parents had in their
- 8:22minds is not the future they may have
- 8:25instilled in us.
- 8:26It's not the future that's unfolding.
- 8:29And a lot of times, your first instinct
- 8:33might be to stay small, to play by
- 8:37the rules, to not ruffle any feathers.
- 8:41And yet, if there are feathers to be
- 8:45ruffled, I think now is the time to
- 8:47ruffle them.
- 8:48There are forces at play right now that
- 8:53are...
- 8:55I really do see, this is going to
- 8:57sound crazy, but I really do see that
- 9:00we are in a battle of light and
- 9:03dark.
- 9:04And the darkness, there is a part of
- 9:10the world that is meant to evolve and
- 9:13there are people who are still holding that
- 9:18vision, who are terrified of the evolving.
- 9:22And this is their last gasp, right?
- 9:25This is their last stand, trying to hold
- 9:30back the vision for the world that really
- 9:33needs to come.
- 9:36And I want you to be part of
- 9:38the light.
- 9:39I want you to be empowered enough to
- 9:42recognize not only can you have the life
- 9:46that you dream of for yourself, but you
- 9:49can become part of the solution, right?
- 9:53You may not have any clue what you
- 9:56can contribute to the world's greater issues.
- 10:01And yet, there is something in front of
- 10:04you that you care deeply about.
- 10:06And if you just took a few steps
- 10:08toward making that problem a little smaller, and
- 10:13we all did that, if we all stood
- 10:15shoulder to shoulder, and we all just did
- 10:19a few small things that mattered to us
- 10:23individually, the whole world would shift, right?
- 10:27I see the world's problems as fractals of
- 10:31each other, right?
- 10:32At the bottom of most of the biggest
- 10:35problems on this planet is the fact that
- 10:38we don't treat each other well, right?
- 10:41We don't, that whole love your neighbor thing.
- 10:46And when people aren't cared for, when they
- 10:48aren't loved, when they aren't nurtured, then they
- 10:53do dangerous, scary things in the world that
- 10:58are driven by fear and anger and hurt,
- 11:01right?
- 11:02So it all comes down, believe it or
- 11:04not, to having more love in the world.
- 11:09And so poverty, racism, sexism, climate change, right?
- 11:17All of it comes down to, they're all
- 11:22just fractals of the same problem.
- 11:26And we don't have to solve them all,
- 11:28right?
- 11:29We don't have to solve even one all
- 11:32by ourselves.
- 11:33But if we all pick the thing in
- 11:35front of us that speaks to us and
- 11:38just move forward in that direction, it comes
- 11:43to like Mother Teresa, I think.
- 11:46I don't know if these were her words,
- 11:47but my idea of the way Mother Teresa
- 11:50thought was that you do what you can
- 11:53for who you can with what you've got,
- 11:57right?
- 11:57You start from where you are, you do
- 11:59what you can.
- 12:00And that's the movement I want to lead.
- 12:04And if you have a movement in you,
- 12:08even if you haven't yet defined what that
- 12:12movement is, then I want you to come
- 12:15and let's all be movement makers together.
- 12:18And I know that we've gone from little
- 12:22things, talking about things in our personal lives
- 12:25to zooming all the way out to solving
- 12:27all of the world's big problems, and that
- 12:29can be a little overwhelming.
- 12:30So let's bring it back down to the
- 12:33personal level.
- 12:34And just, I'd love it if you wanted
- 12:39to take the first step with me.
- 12:41I am creating a community for movement makers.
- 12:47And I would love it if you would
- 12:49join us.
- 12:50Again, you don't have to do it alone.
- 12:52We have got some of the most amazing,
- 12:55heart-centered, brilliant, curious, wonder-seeking people.
- 13:03And we would love to invite you to
- 13:05come join us.

- 13:07It's not a big commitment.
