- 0:11Speaker 2: The Mark Simone Show, live from the WOR LifeVac studios.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Guest hosting for Mark today, here's Ken Rosato. And it
- 0:21Speaker 2: is good to be with you. Once again, we have
- 0:23Speaker 2: breaking news. If you didn't catch it right before our break,
- 0:27Speaker 2: a judge has declared a mistrial or is about to
- 0:32Speaker 2: declare a mistrial, we should say, in the Clancy trial.
- 0:36Speaker 2: He is staying the case for an hour to give. Basically,
- 0:41Speaker 2: when you do a one-hour stay, it pauses the ruling
- 0:43Speaker 2: for an hour, giving the opposing party time to file
- 0:47Speaker 2: an emergency appeal case. before the court officially legalizes the
- 0:50Speaker 2: dismissal or releases the defendant. So that is what is happening.
- 0:55Speaker 2: So there has been a mistrial declared, but pending the
- 0:59Speaker 2: one-hour stay. We'll see what happens at the one-hour stay.
- 1:02Speaker 2: It is not likely to make any difference here. It'll
- 1:05Speaker 2: be a mistrial, which means that the whole thing is
- 1:07Speaker 2: going to be Have to be done over again with
- 1:09Speaker 2: a different jury because the prosecution already said that they
- 1:12Speaker 2: will retry the case if this, in fact, ends up happening.
- 1:16Speaker 2: So we'd love to know what you have to say
- 1:17Speaker 2: about it. 800-321-0710. 800-321-0710. 710WOR, The Voice of New York.
- 1:26Speaker 2: This is Ken Rosato in for Mark. And the Labor
- 1:28Speaker 2: Day holiday weekend is here. And you are going to
- 1:30Speaker 2: get to a point where you are just tired of
- 1:32Speaker 2: having your 19th hot dog. and uncle Joe's hamburgers. It
- 1:36Speaker 2: tastes like lighter fluid. And, uh, and you know, you
- 1:39Speaker 2: have that uncle Joe. I, you know, I'm looking at
- 1:41Speaker 2: the people in the booth. They're all laughing because they've
- 1:43Speaker 2: had that burger and just take one bite. And they're like,
- 1:45Speaker 2: how's the burger? It tastes like crap. Oh, this is delicious.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Just delicious. It's raw. And it's a nasty. All right.
- 1:52Speaker 2: So you will want to instead go catch the movies
- 1:55Speaker 2: and a guy who knows more about the movies than anyone.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I know Roger Friedman of showbiz 411 here with some
- 2:01Speaker 2: ideas of what to check out. Also, by the way,
- 2:04Speaker 2: I check out your site all the time. You also
- 2:06Speaker 2: do a lot on news that's happening. So before we
- 2:09Speaker 2: get to the movies, what do you think about this trial?
- 2:13Speaker 1: You know, I.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Feel like if you kill your three children, you should
- 2:18Speaker 3: go to jail. I mean, even for a week. I
- 2:21Speaker 3: don't understand how you could not. But I guess there's
- 2:25Speaker 3: a lot of sympathy for her. And, you know, maybe
- 2:29Speaker 3: she'll get out of it completely. But don't you agree?
- 2:32Speaker 2: I totally agree.
- 2:33Speaker 3: I mean, if you kill even one child, I think
- 2:35Speaker 3: you go to jail. By the time you got to
- 2:37Speaker 3: the third one, that's it.
- 2:39Speaker 2: We had a woman called from North Carolina. I don't
- 2:42Speaker 2: know if she's a lawyer or not, but she sure
- 2:43Speaker 2: sounds like it. And she was talking about, even she,
- 2:47Speaker 2: she was saying how some people were just saying, oh,
- 2:49Speaker 2: she deserves a death penalty, even though she can't get
- 2:52Speaker 2: it in Massachusetts. But the woman did say, when all
- 2:55Speaker 2: was said and done, she said, I think she deserves
- 2:58Speaker 2: to be convicted of manslaughter. And that would be up
- 3:00Speaker 2: to 20 years behind bars. And that kind of makes
- 3:03Speaker 2: sense to me because now that takes into account the psychosis.
- 3:06Speaker 2: And I think that's sort of a charge or conviction, rather,
- 3:10Speaker 2: that a lot of people would have accepted. But this
- 3:12Speaker 2: is kind of a surprise, I think, with the amount
- 3:14Speaker 2: of evidence, don't you?
- 3:17Speaker 3: Well, with the amount of evidence and also that she's
- 3:20Speaker 3: sitting there in a wheelchair, which makes her very sympathetic.
- 3:24Speaker 3: um and i feel bad for her about the wheelchair
- 3:26Speaker 3: but it's too bad i'm sure there's wheelchair it's handicap
- 3:30Speaker 3: accessible in jail um and the other thing is they
- 3:35Speaker 3: keep saying that there's one juror who's causing the problem
- 3:38Speaker 3: is that it.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah apparently that was the case we'll know more i'm
- 3:41Speaker 2: sure because that person is now free to talk to
- 3:43Speaker 2: the media they don't have to but they're right and
- 3:45Speaker 2: you know that person is going to come and talk
- 3:46Speaker 2: at some point.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Oh yeah they'll someone will pay them for their story
- 3:51Speaker 3: um No, so, you know, it'll make a great movie
- 3:55Speaker 3: one day. These are the kinds of things that used
- 3:58Speaker 3: to make great movies of the week on TV. Remember
- 4:01Speaker 3: those movies of the week?
- 4:02Speaker 2: I sure did. And, of course, Roger Friedman of Showbiz411,
- 4:05Speaker 2: always going there. That was the best segue ever, Roger.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Thank you. Thank you very much. Let's talk about it then.
- 4:11Speaker 2: A couple of things happened. First of all, in the
- 4:14Speaker 2: box office— Spider-Man crossing $ 900 million today. Even as we speak.
- 4:23Speaker 3: It's happening right now.
- 4:24Speaker 2: But it's a great film.
- 4:27Speaker 3: It is. But I mean, to get to a billion
- 4:30Speaker 3: dollars for a domestic film, people will have had to
- 4:33Speaker 3: have seen it two or three times. So there must
- 4:36Speaker 3: be people who have even seen it more than that.
- 4:39Speaker 3: But they do love it. And it is really good.
- 4:42Speaker 3: And it's really been a phenomenon all summer. But just
- 4:47Speaker 3: like the Odyssey, the Odyssey actually is now going back
- 4:50Speaker 3: into IMAX theaters and is picking up box office and
- 4:54Speaker 3: heading towards $ 600 million. which is incredible for a three-hour
- 4:58Speaker 3: movie based on a poem from 3,000 years ago.
- 5:03Speaker 2: And a little poetic interpretation, the way they did the movie.
- 5:08Speaker 2: But nonetheless, you know what I'm really happy about The
- 5:10Speaker 2: Odyssey doing so well? Because the director took so much
- 5:14Speaker 2: painstaking time in shooting the way he shot it and
- 5:18Speaker 2: getting the special machine so you don't hear the noise
- 5:20Speaker 2: with it. I mean, to go through that effort and
- 5:22Speaker 2: spend all that money, you want there to.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Be a reward.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Otherwise, it would die with him. You know, it would
- 5:27Speaker 2: never be done again. Now we might see some amazingly
- 5:30Speaker 2: shot films.
- 5:32Speaker 3: I think it'll encourage studios and filmmakers to really try
- 5:36Speaker 3: and do unusual things. We're going to see, the Odyssey
- 5:40Speaker 3: is going to, I'm getting all this, you know, we
- 5:42Speaker 3: start to get pelted now around Labor Day with Oscar information.
- 5:46Speaker 3: what's coming for the fall, what's going to win awards,
- 5:49Speaker 3: what's going to be nominated. But really, The Odyssey is
- 5:52Speaker 3: going to win everything next March. I can't imagine that
- 5:55Speaker 3: it'll take home fewer than 10 Oscars. It's just really
- 6:00Speaker 3: the film of the year. So that's very exciting. Coyote vs.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Acme is my favorite movie right now. And you haven't
- 6:09Speaker 3: gone to see that yet.
- 6:10Speaker 2: No, I have not. But I am going to check
- 6:12Speaker 2: it out because you just said you love it.
- 6:15Speaker 3: No, I love it. And people who see it love it.
- 6:18Speaker 3: You know, the story about this movie was that Warner
- 6:20Speaker 3: Brothers canceled after it was made. They looked at it
- 6:24Speaker 3: and said, no, we're going to put it on the shelf,
- 6:26Speaker 3: take a tax write-off, and you'll never see it again.
- 6:29Speaker 3: And a huge campaign started to revive it. And finally,
- 6:33Speaker 3: this very little company called Ketchup Entertainment found $ 50 million
- 6:39Speaker 3: and paid Warner Brothers so that they could release it.
- 6:42Speaker 3: And today it's at $ 22 million after just a week.
- 6:46Speaker 3: It's going to earn this money back easily. And it's
- 6:49Speaker 3: so much fun. It's really a great movie. And it's
- 6:52Speaker 3: like Who Framed Roger Rabbit. You know, it's live action,
- 6:56Speaker 3: and then it's animation. And the live action people, that
- 7:02Speaker 3: cast is led by Will Forte and John Cena, because
- 7:06Speaker 3: the Wile E. Coyote sues the Acme Company for all the.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Things that they've sold him that have not helped blow
- 7:14Speaker 3: up the Roadrunner. And it's great. I keep joking. I
- 7:20Speaker 3: keep joking that best actor is going to, they're fighting
- 7:24Speaker 3: Roadrunner and Wiley Cotter fighting over who's going to be
- 7:27Speaker 3: best actor and who's going to be supporting out there.
- 7:30Speaker 3: And of course, Bugs Bunny has a big part in
- 7:32Speaker 3: the movie and it's sort of the showstopper. But it's
- 7:37Speaker 3: just really so much fun. And with all the stuff
- 7:41Speaker 3: going on around us in the world, we need a
- 7:43Speaker 3: little fun. And this is it.
- 7:45Speaker 2: I agree. Hey, listen, on Showbiz 411, you also write
- 7:47Speaker 2: about George Michael, the Faith Tour concert film. I think
- 7:50Speaker 2: George Michael was one of the more impressive musicians of
- 7:55Speaker 2: our time and just did not get a lot of
- 7:57Speaker 2: the applause that he deserved. because he was successful with
- 8:02Speaker 2: certain groups of people, but not everyone, but he wrote
- 8:05Speaker 2: his music. Well, he sang great. He, he was a
- 8:08Speaker 2: very talented person.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Yeah, he was very talented. And I think also, you know,
- 8:14Speaker 3: he undermines himself because he had so many drug problems
- 8:17Speaker 3: and arrests and things like that. And his, his career
- 8:20Speaker 3: sort of, uh, wound up being more about scandal than
- 8:23Speaker 3: being music. Sadly, this, uh, But sadly, but this concert
- 8:28Speaker 3: film is really great. And I think it's coming out
- 8:32Speaker 3: this week or next week. It's coming soon. And I
- 8:36Speaker 3: think just like how Michael Jackson's movie has done so well,
- 8:41Speaker 3: I think you're going to see a lot of people
- 8:42Speaker 3: sort of all of a sudden say, oh, I love
- 8:44Speaker 3: all these songs from George Michael. So that that's going
- 8:47Speaker 3: to do very well, I think.
- 8:48Speaker 2: I agree with you there. I really think so, too.
- 8:50Speaker 2: I'll be checking it out for sure. And then, of course,
- 8:53Speaker 2: over on CBS Mornings, Nora O'Donnell is going to be
- 8:56Speaker 2: joining the show with Gayle King. I know Gayle King.
- 8:59Speaker 2: I've never met Nora, but I think she's a phenomenal anchor.
- 9:02Speaker 2: What do you think about the pairing?
- 9:04Speaker 3: Well, it's a strange time at CBS, you know, how
- 9:09Speaker 3: this all started. Nora O'Donnell was anchoring the CBS Evening
- 9:12Speaker 3: News a year and a half ago, and then they
- 9:15Speaker 3: pulled her off and gave it to those two guys.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Tony DeCoppo. Oh, no, you mean Maurice Dubois, who's also,
- 9:22Speaker 2: by the way, an extremely nice man. I know him well.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, they both are. They both are. But the
- 9:27Speaker 3: show that they gave them was very poorly produced. Nobody
- 9:31Speaker 3: watched it. And then Nora O'Donnell was sort of cut
- 9:36Speaker 3: loose within CBS, and she was doing pieces on 60
- 9:39Speaker 3: Minutes and didn't seem to know what she was doing.
- 9:43Speaker 3: And in the interim, there's been all these other changes.
- 9:47Speaker 3: So now she's going to join Gayle King, and we'll
- 9:51Speaker 3: see what happens. Gayle King and Nora O'Donnell hosting a
- 9:57Speaker 3: show together would have been like Barbara Walters. and Diane
- 10:01Speaker 3: Sawyer at the same time in the old days. Oh,
- 10:04Speaker 3: they were very competitive.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Yes, I can imagine. As you said, I'm laughing having
- 10:08Speaker 2: worked with them both.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:10Speaker 3: And I don't think Gayle, to tell you the truth,
- 10:12Speaker 3: is too pleased with this.
- 10:14Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 10:15Speaker 3: There was nowhere.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Gayle, listen, if I may. Gail will be the queen
- 10:19Speaker 2: bee on the set. She won't let anyone else not be.
- 10:22Speaker 2: But at the same time, as long as you understand
- 10:24Speaker 2: that you are, you are the Gail, that is Gail
- 10:26Speaker 2: show you're coming into. Everything will be great. If there
- 10:29Speaker 2: is any kind.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Of, I don't understand that. I don't know.
- 10:33Speaker 2: As long as she's getting a check.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Hey, listen, when I joined her, she moved to Washington.
- 10:40Speaker 3: She moved to Washington to do the news. And then
- 10:43Speaker 3: now she's had to move back here, which is really crazy.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Because listen, if I may, when I joined the set
- 10:50Speaker 2: on Channel 7 with Laurie Stokes, I knew that I
- 10:53Speaker 2: was joining Laurie Stokes' show. And I remember the general
- 10:56Speaker 2: manager saying, no, you are co-equal anchors. And I thought
- 10:59Speaker 2: to myself, I am not. First of all, I respected
- 11:01Speaker 2: Laurie Stokes more. So I acknowledged that she was there
- 11:05Speaker 2: first and that she was a great anchor. And guess what?
- 11:07Speaker 2: Day one, when I deferred to Laurie, we became best
- 11:10Speaker 2: friends thereafter because I respect her. And I think that's
- 11:13Speaker 2: got to, you have to have that mutual respect. And
- 11:16Speaker 2: we've been friends, like I said, 25 years as a result.
- 11:18Speaker 2: So let's see if that happens.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Well, we love Laurie Stokes.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yes, we do.
- 11:22Speaker 3: And you're absolutely right. But I don't know how this
- 11:24Speaker 3: will play out on CBS. But everything at CBS right
- 11:27Speaker 3: now is up in the air. They're going to have
- 11:29Speaker 3: a whole new kind of 60 minutes starting very shortly,
- 11:32Speaker 3: you know, within the next couple of weeks.
- 11:34Speaker 2: I think in this era, they should lower it, make
- 11:36Speaker 2: it 57 and a half minutes and see if they can.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Save me a couple of bucks in the process. I
- 11:41Speaker 2: might as well at this point. Roger Friedman, we're out
- 11:43Speaker 2: of time. I could talk to you all day about
- 11:44Speaker 2: this stuff. Roger Friedman of Showbiz411. If you haven't checked
- 11:48Speaker 2: out the website, where have you been? Just spell it out. Showbiz411. com.
- 11:53Speaker 2: He has everything up there, everything entertainment and news. We
- 11:56Speaker 2: thank you for coming on this morning. Happy Labor Day weekend.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Thank you, Ken.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Always appreciate you. Thank you, sir. All right, Ken Rosato
- 12:03Speaker 2: in for Mark on your Friday. When we come back,
- 12:05Speaker 2: we'll take your calls at 800-321-0710 on WOR.
