- 1:49Speaker 9: I'm trying to tell you that as a fighter, pound
- 1:52Speaker 9: for pound. My boy Jimmy Cagney will disintegrate your Sylvester Stallone.
- 2:00Speaker 8: He'll knock his block off. In a street fight, maybe. Yes,
- 2:04Speaker 8: I give you that. But not in a movie. Especially
- 2:07Speaker 8: not with today's cinematic advancements. It's technologically impossible.
- 2:11Speaker 1: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian.
- 2:23Speaker 5: I'm Jacqueline.
- 2:24Speaker 3: And we are coming to you live via digital recording
- 2:26Speaker 3: from Gallery K here in Louisville, Kentucky. And joining us
- 2:30Speaker 3: this week, special guest co-host is Justin Golick.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Hey, how's it going, everybody?
- 2:35Speaker 3: So, I guess to kind of intro into you, do
- 2:40Speaker 3: you consider your main job comedian at this point? Or
- 2:43Speaker 3: do you still have to like... asterisk it and be
- 2:46Speaker 3: like well i mean i.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Do do other non-comedy related things for money but it.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Is wait a minute it sounds a little i guess
- 2:55Speaker 3: that is kind of and what's the going rate is.
- 2:57Speaker 4: What um more than comedy unfortunately that's why um but
- 3:01Speaker 4: yeah i still consider comedy my main gig at this point.
- 3:05Speaker 3: So i guess how did you originally i mean coming
- 3:09Speaker 3: up i usually with with everybody i kind of start
- 3:11Speaker 3: at the beginning and like what were you into as
- 3:12Speaker 3: a kid so Was it comedy really early with you?
- 3:16Speaker 4: Yeah, it was weird. Two or three years ago, I
- 3:20Speaker 4: was looking through some old stuff. I had one of
- 3:25Speaker 4: those old books where you put your school picture on
- 3:29Speaker 4: the one page, and then on the back of the page,
- 3:30Speaker 4: you fill in some questions and just see how it changes.
- 3:34Speaker 4: From K through 2, it was always baseball player. And
- 3:39Speaker 4: then to grade three, it changed to baseball player or
- 3:43Speaker 4: stand-up comedian. And that was just because someone told me
- 3:45Speaker 4: that was a job. I didn't know that was a job.
- 3:47Speaker 3: How's your baseball at this point?
- 3:49Speaker 4: Not good. I gave up that dream right about high school.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I guess you've made the right decision.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I made a good choice. As bad as this goes,
- 3:58Speaker 4: baseball would have gone worse for me.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Not very, very good to you.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Yeah. I was good, but, like, have you ever done
- 4:08Speaker 4: something where, like, I was good until about high school.
- 4:11Speaker 4: And then I saw people.
- 4:12Speaker 3: You watched everyone else go, oh, that's... I remember.
- 4:15Speaker 4: Watching someone specifically who was like a senior when I
- 4:18Speaker 4: was a freshman. And I was just like, that's a
- 4:22Speaker 4: real person at this thing. And I won't be that
- 4:26Speaker 4: in three years.
- 4:26Speaker 3: I say that about just life, really. I look at
- 4:28Speaker 3: other people and I'm like.
- 4:29Speaker 4: It's not always sports, but I feel like people reach
- 4:32Speaker 4: that with things.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Like you were a talented kid, but then everyone caught
- 4:36Speaker 5: up and surpassed.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Yeah. And it's like everything... you start shedding. So it's like,
- 4:41Speaker 4: if you're a kid, you got to be so good
- 4:43Speaker 4: to be really good. And then as you go up
- 4:45Speaker 4: and up, you got to be like the top more percentage.
- 4:48Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 4:48Speaker 4: And so I feel like I was maybe top 50%,
- 4:52Speaker 4: but once it started paring down, it was like, well,
- 4:54Speaker 4: now I'm not gonna make these cuts.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Again, I still feel like I'm doing that with just
- 4:58Speaker 3: general life.
- 4:59Speaker 4: I look at other people.
- 5:00Speaker 3: I'm like that, that's a real person. I don't know
- 5:03Speaker 3: what I'm doing, but it ain't that.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:07Speaker 3: So was it always Chicago for you?
- 5:10Speaker 4: I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and then I went
- 5:13Speaker 4: to Ohio State.
- 5:14Speaker 3: You escaped Cleveland.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I went to Ohio State.
- 5:17Speaker 3: As everyone wants to do.
- 5:18Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Well, I feel like anytime you grow up in the Midwest,
- 5:21Speaker 4: it's like Chicago's like You either stay where you're from
- 5:25Speaker 4: or you go to Chicago.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Your closest home.
- 5:27Speaker 5: It's our feeder city.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:28Speaker 3: If you're not going to make it to either coast,
- 5:30Speaker 3: it's like, well, Chicago's pretty damn big.
- 5:33Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not bad. So, yeah, I grew up in Cleveland.
- 5:35Speaker 4: I went to Ohio State in Columbus. I lived there
- 5:38Speaker 4: for a couple years after I graduated. And I started
- 5:40Speaker 4: comedy there. And I moved to Chicago about two and
- 5:44Speaker 4: a half, almost three years ago now.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Awesome.
- 5:47Speaker 3: So, at that point, I mean, again, there has such
- 5:51Speaker 3: a comedy history to it there. Is that hard to, again,
- 5:56Speaker 3: is it its own weird little club so it's hard
- 5:58Speaker 3: to kind of break into once you're coming from the outside?
- 6:02Speaker 4: Probably the best thing about it that everyone says and
- 6:04Speaker 4: that people told me before I moved there that I
- 6:06Speaker 4: think is true is The best part about it is
- 6:09Speaker 4: it's got everything a big city scene has, like tons
- 6:12Speaker 4: of shows, tons of open mics, multiple clubs. But there's
- 6:16Speaker 4: not really any industry there. Like there's no TV.
- 6:19Speaker 3: No movie. Yeah, they've got a little of everything.
- 6:23Speaker 4: But in a way that like you can try, you
- 6:26Speaker 4: can work stuff out there and no one's seeing it.
- 6:29Speaker 4: So you can kind of grow there.
- 6:31Speaker 3: There's only a handful of those cities that are so
- 6:33Speaker 3: focused on what you get something like LA, which is
- 6:36Speaker 3: one specific industry or even more so like Nashville. Yeah.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Like you can't, like you can't have a regular job
- 6:41Speaker 3: living there. You know, it's like, so yeah, Chicago is
- 6:44Speaker 3: just sort of a big city with a lot of options.
- 6:47Speaker 4: So yeah, I feel it's like the best place to
- 6:49Speaker 4: grow and then you can pick a coast later.
- 6:52Speaker 5: Instead of getting crushed immediately yeah swept under the rug.
- 6:56Speaker 4: I don't know if this is too like inside baseball
- 6:58Speaker 4: but I asked a friend when I was living in
- 6:59Speaker 4: Columbus I was like I kind of want to go
- 7:01Speaker 4: to Chicago but I'm thinking about just going right to
- 7:02Speaker 4: New York and he's like what do you want to
- 7:04Speaker 4: do and I was like I want to write and
- 7:06Speaker 4: he was like like just like write more jokes and
- 7:08Speaker 4: like develop another hour and he was like chicago's great
- 7:12Speaker 4: for that new york's great if you're ready to just
- 7:15Speaker 4: go to carolines and do three minutes every night you
- 7:18Speaker 4: know just get this like tight three that you just
- 7:20Speaker 4: do and try to impress people i'm like that sounds
- 7:23Speaker 4: horrific at this point and he's like i wouldn't go
- 7:25Speaker 4: there yet then because that's kind of what it is.
- 7:27Speaker 3: So has it eased its way in like is it
- 7:31Speaker 3: one because i watch it it's funny doing this and
- 7:33Speaker 3: talking to a lot of comics and going to more
- 7:35Speaker 3: and more shows over the years I do start to
- 7:37Speaker 3: just from the outside kind of watch it and you
- 7:39Speaker 3: can see people sort of ease their way into it.
- 7:43Speaker 3: And like, you'll, I'll watch somebody that was like hosting
- 7:46Speaker 3: the show, but they'd only been doing it for like
- 7:47Speaker 3: six months and it felt like they'd only been doing
- 7:50Speaker 3: it like, and they weren't bad. They just didn't feel comfortable.
- 7:53Speaker 3: And then you watch somebody who's been doing it for
- 7:54Speaker 3: like 20 years and it's like effortless. So, I mean,
- 7:58Speaker 3: I don't, do you still feel yourself kind of getting
- 8:01Speaker 3: into that groove?
- 8:02Speaker 4: Um, in a way, like, Like, both ways. Like, there's
- 8:06Speaker 4: definitely ways where I'm just, like, I feel more confident
- 8:09Speaker 4: than I ever have. But then there's still ways where
- 8:12Speaker 4: I'm like, I want to be better. Which is good.
- 8:14Speaker 4: You need that. But I think, yeah, I think without
- 8:16Speaker 4: that second thing, it's boring, right? Yeah, you're just going
- 8:18Speaker 4: to cap off. Again, like, anything in life.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:20Speaker 4: So I kind of like that there's always times when
- 8:22Speaker 4: I'll get off and I'm like, I need to do
- 8:24Speaker 4: that different. But I do feel more comfortable than I
- 8:27Speaker 4: ever have. Probably, like, the last... I don't know, three-ish years,
- 8:30Speaker 4: I felt good. And even more so this last year.
- 8:32Speaker 4: It's been getting better and better. That's awesome. Which is,
- 8:34Speaker 4: I guess, unlike baseball. That's why I'm still doing it.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Because I'm like, this one I see people, I'm like,
- 8:39Speaker 4: I could maybe do that. Unlike that time when I
- 8:41Speaker 4: freshman year. You still haven't reached your peak.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:43Speaker 3: And you can coast a little longer. You know, sports,
- 8:45Speaker 3: you got a little window, and then you're just an
- 8:47Speaker 3: old man trying to play.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Yeah, you can break in your 40s as an artist,
- 8:51Speaker 4: but not as an athlete.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Not normally as a professional athlete.
- 8:55Speaker 4: That's pretty rare.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, and then, again, for me, it always comes
- 8:59Speaker 3: back to movies. I guess were you always a movie fan?
- 9:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:04Speaker 4: I mean, I think, like, I'm 32. I don't know
- 9:06Speaker 4: how old you guys are. We look about the same-ish age.
- 9:09Speaker 2: I'm 70.
- 9:10Speaker 4: You seem a little younger.
- 9:11Speaker 3: I'm 25.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Nice. Are we, like, the same-ish age? Okay.
- 9:16Speaker 3: In theory. In theory. Plus 20 or 30.
- 9:19Speaker 4: I feel like a 25-year-old might get this. It's like,
- 9:23Speaker 4: we had cable most of my childhood, maybe around... I
- 9:28Speaker 4: don't remember exactly, but... It was still that kind of
- 9:31Speaker 4: cable where it was like you'd see the same movies
- 9:33Speaker 4: over and over again. Like HBO showed like four movies.
- 9:37Speaker 3: And HBO, not seven HBOs.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Right, and no original programming. So it's like, I think
- 9:42Speaker 4: like it was perfect for like, because as a kid
- 9:44Speaker 4: you don't mind that. You'll watch the same movies over
- 9:46Speaker 4: and over again. So I liked movies.
- 9:47Speaker 3: You don't even think about it, yeah.
- 9:48Speaker 4: I liked movies, but I don't know if I have
- 9:50Speaker 4: like a breadth of knowledge like some people. But I'll
- 9:52Speaker 4: be like, oh, I saw that movie like 40 times.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 9:55Speaker 5: My problem is is that I forget every single detail
- 9:57Speaker 5: as soon as the movie's over like I I'm very
- 10:00Speaker 5: big picture about it all this is why I make.
- 10:02Speaker 4: You watch them immediately before we talk about it So
- 10:06Speaker 4: like reading comprehension, like some people bet, but you're like
- 10:08Speaker 4: watching comprehension.
- 10:09Speaker 11: Right, yeah.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Like when someone reads eight pages of book and they're like,
- 10:12Speaker 4: what did I just read?
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yep.
- 10:13Speaker 4: Sometimes that's you, but with movies.
- 10:15Speaker 5: I can binge watch a whole series and I won't
- 10:18Speaker 5: remember the main characters.
- 10:19Speaker 3: See, that's why I don't read. I do remember things
- 10:21Speaker 3: if I'm watching them, but reading is useless to me.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Reading's tough for me too.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Yeah, this is why we moved into other areas.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:29Speaker 12: Reading, books.
- 10:29Speaker 4: There's something for everybody out there, so.
- 10:32Speaker 5: What was like one of the movies that like played
- 10:35Speaker 5: over and over when you were a kid? I have
- 10:36Speaker 5: one in mind.
- 10:37Speaker 4: Um, I remember like a big one. Well, just cause like,
- 10:40Speaker 4: I think we had it on VHS was like, I
- 10:44Speaker 4: feel like I watched, but it was funny. We had
- 10:45Speaker 4: it taped from TV. So I remember I saw it
- 10:48Speaker 4: way later in life and realized there was a few
- 10:51Speaker 4: scenes missing cause they always edited it for time.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Um, so you got like the TBS version.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I got, I got TBS version of karate kid
- 10:59Speaker 4: over and over.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Yes.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Which is a nice tie into this week's episode. So yeah.
- 11:04Speaker 4: Did you have one, though?
- 11:06Speaker 5: Happy Gilmore.
- 11:07Speaker 4: That's a good one.
- 11:08Speaker 5: I just watched Happy Gilmore over and over. It was
- 11:11Speaker 5: on all the times, back to back.
- 11:14Speaker 4: That was a big one.
- 11:14Speaker 3: I'm trying to think. Again, I know what my early
- 11:18Speaker 3: go-tos are, but I'm trying to think of what those
- 11:20Speaker 3: cable repeat. It's a lot of them, though. That's the thing.
- 11:23Speaker 3: I will think back and be like, and this will
- 11:27Speaker 3: get to it a little. There are things that I
- 11:28Speaker 3: remember as just sort of, pop culturally and like i
- 11:34Speaker 3: saw it sort of on cable non-stop right right right
- 11:37Speaker 3: but whether or not i like did i sit down
- 11:39Speaker 3: and watch it you know which i kind of did
- 11:41Speaker 3: a lot even when i was younger but like there's
- 11:43Speaker 3: just some movies that like i just know them so
- 11:46Speaker 3: well from sort of being on in the background on
- 11:49Speaker 3: cable non-stop for years on end yeah and yeah there's
- 11:53Speaker 3: quite a few that i will then go back and
- 11:54Speaker 3: look at like i'll i'll think back to vhs days
- 11:58Speaker 3: Or cable. And I'm like, yeah, I know that movie
- 12:00Speaker 3: backwards and forwards, but do I remember like a time
- 12:04Speaker 3: when I was like, I want to watch this? No,
- 12:05Speaker 3: it was just sort of there and on and in,
- 12:08Speaker 3: in my home nonstop.
- 12:10Speaker 4: So I also had like a weird thing. Like I
- 12:12Speaker 4: saw Ghostbusters two. probably like 50 times before i saw
- 12:16Speaker 4: the first one interesting because like someone i think my
- 12:19Speaker 4: next door neighbor owned it and she would bring it
- 12:21Speaker 4: over and we just watch it it's i have a
- 12:24Speaker 4: history of that actually the movie we're going to talk
- 12:25Speaker 4: about i don't want to spoil it i'll give you
- 12:26Speaker 4: the host the true host the but i i saw
- 12:30Speaker 4: two of the sequels probably like Almost 100 times a
- 12:34Speaker 4: piece before I saw the original movie. I didn't see
- 12:37Speaker 4: the original movie until I was probably in middle school.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Not in that order, but yeah, two of them fall
- 12:41Speaker 3: into that thing I just described a minute ago. So
- 12:44Speaker 3: we'll get back to that. But yeah, I think that's
- 12:48Speaker 3: part of it. I think we just sort of... We're immersed. Again,
- 12:52Speaker 3: I think it is part of why I ended up
- 12:54Speaker 3: the way I am now. It's like, had I been
- 12:56Speaker 3: immersed in other things nonstop, I might be doing that now,
- 13:00Speaker 3: but I jam around about movies.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Yeah. Hey, whatever works.
- 13:03Speaker 12: It's what I do.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Well, do we want to roll into the movie then?
- 13:07Speaker 4: Yeah, sure.
- 13:08Speaker 3: It's time for Sofa Theater.
- 13:12Speaker 11: His name is Sylvester Stallone. He's the star of a
- 13:16Speaker 11: new film called Rocky. He's been described as tough, Handsome, talented, sexy, sensitive, dynamic, brilliant.
- 13:27Speaker 11: He's been compared to Nicholson, De Niro and Brando, but
- 13:32Speaker 11: he is Rocky. He's the man who could be loved
- 13:36Speaker 11: by only one woman because somehow she.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Gets beneath the pain.
- 13:41Speaker 11: He's every nobody who ever needed somebody.
- 13:46Speaker 7: Rocky, do you believe that America is the land of opportunity?
- 13:52Speaker 6: I'll break both your arms so they don't wipe you.
- 13:56Speaker 11: He's every man who ever settled for something less.
- 14:02Speaker 9: What about my pride, Nick?
- 14:04Speaker 4: At least you had a pride. I ain't had no pride.
- 14:08Speaker 13: I ain't had nothing.
- 14:09Speaker 3: How would he get that? How would he get that? Terrific.
- 14:12Speaker 2: I mean, he could be a heartbreaker.
- 14:15Speaker 6: He'll walk down the street breaking hearts the way you're looking.
- 14:17Speaker 8: Very sharp.
- 14:18Speaker 2: He's the man who never had a chance until now.
- 14:22Speaker 11: Rocky, his whole life was a million to one shot.
- 14:31Speaker 11: His name is Sylvester Stallone, but you will always remember.
- 14:35Speaker 4: Him as Rocky.
- 14:43Speaker 3: So, for our official rundown here, let's see. And I'm
- 14:47Speaker 3: going to vary it a little because I ran across
- 14:49Speaker 3: something the other day. It was pretty special. So this
- 14:53Speaker 3: week's Sofa Theater feature is Rocky. The year is 1976.
- 14:57Speaker 3: The director is John G. Alvinson. And normally I'll read
- 15:02Speaker 3: the IMDb breakdown here, which is always terrible anyway. So instead,
- 15:07Speaker 3: after we... This is weird. After I decided... okay, we
- 15:10Speaker 3: need to do this episode, and you and I kind
- 15:12Speaker 3: of touched base and went, all right, what do we
- 15:13Speaker 3: want to talk about? We decided on this movie, and
- 15:16Speaker 3: then immediately that day, I ran across this.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Dude, I own that. That's so crazy.
- 15:24Speaker 5: Synchronicity.
- 15:25Speaker 3: For those of you at home, I have the novelization
- 15:28Speaker 3: of Rocky. And it's not even by Stallone. He didn't
- 15:33Speaker 3: pull a Lucas and do his own book, which he
- 15:35Speaker 3: did in the very beginning there.
- 15:36Speaker 4: I believe he writes the sequels. I have one through four,
- 15:38Speaker 4: which they novelized one through four. I'm a huge fan.
- 15:41Speaker 4: It's the only thing I geek out about. Novelization?
- 15:46Speaker 3: Or just Rocky.
- 15:47Speaker 4: It's like my Star Wars.
- 15:48Speaker 6: Nice.
- 15:49Speaker 4: Which is weird because it doesn't have that type of
- 15:50Speaker 4: following like Star Wars, so I usually have no one
- 15:52Speaker 4: to geek out with.
- 15:53Speaker 3: I mean, it does, but it's usually, that's the thing.
- 15:57Speaker 3: I'll say like the Star Wars fan base, and even
- 15:59Speaker 3: like most movies that are like sci-fi or fantasy or horror,
- 16:04Speaker 3: any sort of sub-genre has like a fan base that
- 16:07Speaker 3: you can kind of just connect with and you all
- 16:09Speaker 3: kind of know you're on the same page. Rocky is
- 16:12Speaker 3: so like sort of normal guy. I don't think.
- 16:16Speaker 4: It has a convention. One convention. Maybe I'll start it.
- 16:20Speaker 3: I think you can do that. You got to go
- 16:22Speaker 3: to Philly, obviously. But yeah, you can do that. So yeah,
- 16:25Speaker 3: instead of the actual IMDb, I like it's got a
- 16:29Speaker 3: little breakdown in the cover of the book here. So
- 16:30Speaker 3: let's read that. Again, books and reading.
- 16:33Speaker 12: Good luck to me.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Here's your ringside seat to the bloodiest bicentennial in history.
- 16:38Speaker 3: The place Philadelphia, the stakes, the 1976 World Heavyweight Crown,
- 16:43Speaker 3: the contenders. I like this. This is obviously dated. black
- 16:47Speaker 3: champ Apollo Creed, who spouts poetry at the press and
- 16:50Speaker 3: throws dynamite at his opponents, and challenger Rocky Balboa, the
- 16:54Speaker 3: Italian stallion, a small-time guy with big-time guts who yearns
- 16:59Speaker 3: to be a hero just once. I mean, if that
- 17:03Speaker 3: doesn't sell, you're right there in the front of the book.
- 17:05Speaker 3: I don't know what does, but yes, this is the
- 17:07Speaker 3: novelization based on the screenplay by Stallone, but then written
- 17:11Speaker 3: by Julia Sorrell. So I don't know what Julia's doing
- 17:15Speaker 3: these days, but I thought this was pretty damn fancy.
- 17:17Speaker 5: He should have started the convention.
- 17:18Speaker 3: He should have started this book. Stallone or Julie, uh,
- 17:23Speaker 3: I guess it's, uh, female.
- 17:25Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 17:27Speaker 3: So do we want to begin at the very beginning?
- 17:31Speaker 3: Because this is one of those that I was saying, I,
- 17:35Speaker 3: as you said that I was almost like, cause we
- 17:37Speaker 3: were like, okay, let's talk about, oh, Rocky. And I'm like,
- 17:39Speaker 3: where do I begin? Because I know two of the
- 17:42Speaker 3: middle ones are, way too well because those were the
- 17:46Speaker 3: ones on cable in the middle and then i was
- 17:48Speaker 3: like i know at some point i've seen the first
- 17:50Speaker 3: one but i don't really remember when and how specific
- 17:55Speaker 3: i remember everything and so i was like okay let's
- 17:58Speaker 3: go with that one because i want to revisit it
- 18:00Speaker 3: it's very different going back and re-watching it now having
- 18:03Speaker 3: not seen it in years and then especially knowing the
- 18:07Speaker 3: franchise as well as i do as it goes on
- 18:09Speaker 3: it's like it's weird looking back at its And it's
- 18:12Speaker 3: like infancy because it's so different than what it becomes.
- 18:16Speaker 6: Right.
- 18:16Speaker 3: But then it kind of needs to.
- 18:17Speaker 12: Be, too.
- 18:18Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:19Speaker 3: I don't know. I guess.
- 18:20Speaker 4: It's a weird franchise where each one is almost like
- 18:22Speaker 4: a standalone property, but connected.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:25Speaker 4: You know?
- 18:26Speaker 3: And it's... on a trajectory that kind of needs to happen.
- 18:29Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Like I, it is one of those, like people like
- 18:32Speaker 3: by the third one, people are already making fun. Like
- 18:34Speaker 3: the joke is in airplane, making fun of them, making
- 18:37Speaker 3: too many sequels.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Right.
- 18:38Speaker 3: By the third one at that point. So it is
- 18:40Speaker 3: like for years, people were like, Oh my God, why
- 18:42Speaker 3: don't they just quit? Like, why do they keep doing this?
- 18:44Speaker 3: And I'm like, the more we, yeah, well I'm like,
- 18:47Speaker 3: but you need, I think you would need at least
- 18:49Speaker 3: five to actually get a real story arc of this care.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Like if you just stopped it at this one, I'm like,
- 18:56Speaker 3: you're kind of missing the potential of telling what needs
- 18:59Speaker 3: to happen to this character because we see him when
- 19:01Speaker 3: he's nobody.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:03Speaker 3: And then watching when we get to two and he's
- 19:05Speaker 3: sort of finding his way to actual like superstardom. And
- 19:09Speaker 3: then you see the excess that sets in by the
- 19:12Speaker 3: third one to the point that he starts kind of
- 19:14Speaker 3: losing himself in it.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:16Speaker 3: And then the fourth one is sort of this redemption
- 19:18Speaker 3: and going back to the basics of how to... And
- 19:21Speaker 3: then by the fifth one, it's just like, okay, my
- 19:22Speaker 3: career's kind of over now. What do I do? And
- 19:25Speaker 3: then we beat two more out of it. So, I mean,
- 19:27Speaker 3: we've maybe still gone a little further. Although Creed's pretty
- 19:29Speaker 3: damn impressive. But they still found something original and kind
- 19:33Speaker 3: of different to do with that character that far into
- 19:35Speaker 3: the run of it. But, yeah, going back and re-watching,
- 19:39Speaker 3: it's very different. I don't know. Do you want to
- 19:42Speaker 3: approach it from... Because I guess you've seen it many
- 19:46Speaker 3: more times in between.
- 19:47Speaker 4: Probably. the most times uh yeah i don't know i
- 19:52Speaker 4: i saw three and four both those were my two
- 19:55Speaker 4: dozens of times which i mean i think i saw
- 19:58Speaker 4: it the first time when i was probably like four
- 20:01Speaker 4: so i just feel like i think three is the
- 20:02Speaker 4: first one i saw but i watched them both in
- 20:04Speaker 4: tandem around that age And I think that's why I
- 20:07Speaker 4: got so into it. Those are much more attuned to
- 20:09Speaker 4: a child's sensibilities. They're both about 80 minutes long. It's
- 20:12Speaker 4: like they both have a lot of fights.
- 20:14Speaker 3: They're very flashy, too, where one and two are not
- 20:17Speaker 3: at all.
- 20:17Speaker 4: One and two, you got to wait like two hours
- 20:19Speaker 4: for one fight. This one, you got a Hulk Hogan
- 20:22Speaker 4: fight in like act one.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Immediately.
- 20:24Speaker 4: That's act one is a Hulk Hogan fight. And then
- 20:27Speaker 4: a first Clubber Lang fight and then another Clubber Lang
- 20:30Speaker 4: fight spattered with training in between.
- 20:33Speaker 3: And then we get into Ruskies and some sort of
- 20:35Speaker 3: crazy machinery and drugs.
- 20:37Speaker 4: The fourth one is pretty much just montages from the
- 20:40Speaker 4: previous Rockies and training and fighting.
- 20:43Speaker 3: So again, it's like, if you're.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Poor, you're like, yay.
- 20:46Speaker 3: And kind of already starts to be repetitive because to me,
- 20:49Speaker 3: it's almost the exact same scenario of what goes on
- 20:51Speaker 3: the third one. but it just sort of twists it
- 20:54Speaker 3: a little bit. And now we're working with different characters,
- 20:57Speaker 3: but like it hits the same beats as the third one.
- 21:00Speaker 4: Again, it's a lot of like, how can we make
- 21:02Speaker 4: him win in an interesting way? And then we'll work
- 21:05Speaker 4: backwards from that. Yeah.
- 21:07Speaker 3: Which again, it's just maybe a screenwriting plan at that point.
- 21:10Speaker 3: It's like, okay, this franchise is making money. People now
- 21:13Speaker 3: know who I am. I don't need to let this die.
- 21:16Speaker 3: how do I make a fourth win and who do
- 21:17Speaker 3: we not like right now?
- 21:18Speaker 12: Russia.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Let's work in.
- 21:20Speaker 4: Four is definitely probably the biggest albatross of the whole. Five,
- 21:24Speaker 4: they always say, which I agree is the worst, but
- 21:27Speaker 4: it's actually the most like in canon. It's just poorly executed.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Four is almost like Almost like they... It's like almost like...
- 21:35Speaker 4: I don't know. Like they gave it to like a
- 21:37Speaker 4: third party. Like they just outsourced the property. Which is
- 21:40Speaker 4: weird because Stallone wrote, directed, and starred.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:43Speaker 4: So it's super connected. But it almost seems like they
- 21:45Speaker 4: just like lent it out to someone. Like, here you
- 21:47Speaker 4: can have fun with these characters, but then you gotta
- 21:48Speaker 4: give it back to us. It also.
- 21:50Speaker 3: And this is one from watching all these different movies
- 21:52Speaker 3: and talking about them over the years. You start to
- 21:54Speaker 3: see the industry change because of the time it takes
- 21:57Speaker 3: place in.
- 21:58Speaker 12: Totally.
- 21:58Speaker 3: And I say that so much about 80s movies.
- 22:01Speaker 2: I'm like.
- 22:02Speaker 3: People want to write off, like, MTV, but I'm like,
- 22:04Speaker 3: music video culture completely revolutionized filmmaking, like, to the point
- 22:09Speaker 3: where people are like, oh, we can do this kind
- 22:12Speaker 3: of stuff? And, like, so, like, you watch, like, you
- 22:14Speaker 3: see it sort of set in in 3. 3 has
- 22:17Speaker 3: got the rockin' soundtrack already, so I'm like, they kind of, like,
- 22:20Speaker 3: made use of the video, but it wasn't tied to
- 22:22Speaker 3: it that much. 4 just became a music video. Over
- 22:26Speaker 3: and over again. Like, it literally... Like, the part with
- 22:28Speaker 3: him driving, I think, was the video. Like, they did
- 22:31Speaker 3: not change it. They took that, like, three and a
- 22:33Speaker 3: half minute clip, ran it on MTV all day long.
- 22:36Speaker 4: So it's like.
- 22:37Speaker 3: By the fourth one, it is just sort of, like,
- 22:39Speaker 3: immersed in the 80s so much that it becomes an
- 22:42Speaker 3: MTV video at that point. Which, again, it's pretty damn fun.
- 22:46Speaker 3: But it's a very different... creature than this very first.
- 22:50Speaker 4: One yeah i mean the first one's i mean the
- 22:52Speaker 4: first one won the academy award yeah so you go
- 22:55Speaker 4: from like an academy award to yeah like i mean
- 22:57Speaker 4: three to me three feels like fan fiction is what
- 23:01Speaker 4: i always say because it's like to me that's exactly
- 23:05Speaker 4: what makes fan fiction interesting right is that like they
- 23:09Speaker 4: do things that you'd almost think well we can't do
- 23:12Speaker 4: that for like logistical reasons but it would be cool
- 23:14Speaker 4: where it's like Let's pull things from one universe and
- 23:17Speaker 4: put it in another universe. And let's, these people that
- 23:19Speaker 4: would never get along, now they're friends. And that's like,
- 23:22Speaker 4: Apollo's now training Rocky. And except like Hulk Hogan's in it.
- 23:26Speaker 4: He's not playing Hulk Hogan. He's playing Thunderlips. But still,
- 23:28Speaker 4: it's like, there's wrestling now? That just seems like a
- 23:30Speaker 4: five-year-old being like, he wrestles now. And them just being like, okay.
- 23:34Speaker 5: I appreciate them just going for it. Being like, we're
- 23:36Speaker 5: not going to let these logistical loopholes stand in our
- 23:39Speaker 5: way of making the movie we want to make.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Which also as like not a huge wrestling fan but
- 23:45Speaker 4: i liked it i always argue that the thunder lips
- 23:48Speaker 4: persona is a way more interesting wrestling character than hulk
- 23:51Speaker 4: hogan's actual just i'm a real american very standard.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Thing maybe as interesting as his actual life because that's
- 23:59Speaker 3: a little more i guess it's a little more true
- 24:01Speaker 3: to form yeah a little more racy and interesting for
- 24:03Speaker 3: some people i i tuned out at this point but
- 24:06Speaker 3: yeah at least there's something going on in his real
- 24:08Speaker 3: life where Yeah, he was a little too squeaky clean. Like,
- 24:11Speaker 3: I remember as a kid, again, he was the good guy.
- 24:14Speaker 3: You were supposed to kind of like him. But looking back,
- 24:16Speaker 3: I'm like, he is relatively boring. You know, as you
- 24:19Speaker 3: look at people like Rowdy Roddy Piper, and you're like,
- 24:21Speaker 3: all right, that guy, he's a bastard. And you kind
- 24:24Speaker 3: of got to like him, right? I'm like, he's entertaining
- 24:27Speaker 3: every second he's on there. But I don't know, I think, again,
- 24:31Speaker 3: we're sidetracking into the sequels, but just, I feel like
- 24:34Speaker 3: more than anything, though, I feel like the third one
- 24:36Speaker 3: is necessary. Especially, and I'll touch back on it in
- 24:40Speaker 3: this one, but... because it really does show us because
- 24:44Speaker 3: we're dealing with professional sports. And it's like, when you
- 24:47Speaker 3: get to that level, like it really does kind of
- 24:50Speaker 3: show what you have to become. Like, I feel like he,
- 24:53Speaker 3: he needs to get to that for the, at least
- 24:56Speaker 3: to have a story arc from there, it gets sillier
- 24:58Speaker 3: in the next couple, I guess. But I think one
- 25:00Speaker 3: through three, like tells a pretty realistic story of like
- 25:04Speaker 3: being a nobody and, fighting your way kind of into
- 25:07Speaker 3: a point where you can actually be a contender. And
- 25:09Speaker 3: then like, okay, what happens when you're this kid from
- 25:11Speaker 3: Philly and now they're throwing millions of dollars at you
- 25:14Speaker 3: and what, I mean, obviously you're going to be a
- 25:17Speaker 3: life of excess, but then like what happens when, because
- 25:22Speaker 3: of that, you start, you know, kind of getting lazy
- 25:25Speaker 3: and you lose it. And like, it is sort of
- 25:27Speaker 3: a weird little like arc all on its own right
- 25:30Speaker 3: there that I think one through three tells like a
- 25:32Speaker 3: pretty realistic story of, becoming a very successful sports figure
- 25:37Speaker 3: and not knowing how to deal with it.
- 25:39Speaker 4: I think that's why it ends up working well as
- 25:41Speaker 4: a movie. Cause for all it's bombast in production. The
- 25:44Speaker 4: story is actually pretty decent. Not only do you have him,
- 25:47Speaker 4: but then you have this Clubber Lang character who's basically
- 25:50Speaker 4: being like, what do you do when now what made
- 25:54Speaker 4: you you is coming after you? Now you've got a
- 25:56Speaker 4: guy that feels like he's never been respected and he
- 25:59Speaker 4: wants his shot. Now how do you fight you? How
- 26:01Speaker 4: do you get back to the old you who's the
- 26:03Speaker 4: only one that can beat essentially new you coming after you?
- 26:06Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what I don't think I realized until watching
- 26:08Speaker 3: the first one again. And I'm like, well, it's just
- 26:10Speaker 3: mirroring him, like Clubber Lang, right? working out in his
- 26:14Speaker 3: basement you know when when rocky's doing a photo shoot
- 26:17Speaker 3: on a treadmill you know i'm like that's exactly what's
- 26:19Speaker 3: going on with him and apollo in this first one
- 26:21Speaker 3: and like you don't know it at the time but
- 26:24Speaker 3: yeah it's like that's that's definitely what they're kind of
- 26:26Speaker 3: tapping into in this first one so i guess to
- 26:29Speaker 3: sort of refocus on the first one there's i do
- 26:33Speaker 3: we want to comment that the very first thing.
- 26:35Speaker 4: We see is jesus yeah jesus close up and fade
- 26:39Speaker 4: back i was like.
- 26:40Speaker 3: I don't I don't know if that's supposed to be
- 26:43Speaker 3: as overwhelmingly like overpowering as it kind of is. There
- 26:47Speaker 3: is a weird like side thing I just read today
- 26:50Speaker 3: of the like a religious tie into it, which again,
- 26:54Speaker 3: I guess maybe is because Stallone kind of put a
- 26:57Speaker 3: lot of stuff on the wall. And supposedly there's a
- 26:59Speaker 3: picture of I think it's like St. Matthew being chosen
- 27:03Speaker 3: by Jesus. It's like one of the weird little paintings
- 27:06Speaker 3: on his like pinned up to the wall there. And
- 27:08Speaker 3: it's like him being taken out of obscurity and chosen
- 27:11Speaker 3: by God to move into greatness, which is sort of
- 27:15Speaker 3: the Apollo of Apollo and God. So, I mean, I
- 27:18Speaker 3: guess there's, yeah, if you want to reach kind of
- 27:19Speaker 3: deep and find religious overtones, I guess.
- 27:22Speaker 5: There's a little of that. Sure, he gets the shit
- 27:23Speaker 5: beat out of him for Philly's vices.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Yeah, then he comes back three movies later.
- 27:30Speaker 5: It's really interesting hearing about the sequels as someone who
- 27:33Speaker 5: has only seen the first one and only saw it
- 27:35Speaker 5: last night.
- 27:35Speaker 4: I was going to say, did you just watch it
- 27:37Speaker 4: for this podcast?
- 27:38Speaker 3: That was one of the other reasons I liked bringing
- 27:40Speaker 3: you in. I was like, normally you have good stuff anyway,
- 27:42Speaker 3: but being completely disconnected from all of this stuff.
- 27:46Speaker 5: Except for pop culture stuff.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Which, again, mine is so roundabout. It's like I've got
- 27:52Speaker 3: half of it that's just what you pick up normally
- 27:54Speaker 3: from pop culture, and then so much of it is
- 27:56Speaker 3: me watching it on cable again, so I've got this
- 27:59Speaker 3: weird conglomeration of all of it. But to be able
- 28:02Speaker 3: to kind of look at it totally disconnected or from
- 28:05Speaker 3: what you know from just having things thrown at you.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Because that's the thing, too. Looking at it, I kept going, okay,
- 28:12Speaker 3: and now it's time for this scene. And it's like,
- 28:14Speaker 3: I do remember so many of the scenes because they
- 28:16Speaker 3: constantly still play them on TV. Or so many of
- 28:20Speaker 3: them are now just mimicked in other movies. Either straight
- 28:23Speaker 3: out made fun of kind of things or... Just every
- 28:26Speaker 3: sports movie that came after it kind of stole from
- 28:28Speaker 3: the ideas of what's going on. So it is sort
- 28:32Speaker 3: of weird trying to go back to the beginning before
- 28:35Speaker 3: it gets referenced in everything in the world.
- 28:37Speaker 4: Well, I actually did also watch it last night, even
- 28:40Speaker 4: though I'd seen it a bunch. I was like, I'm
- 28:41Speaker 4: going to watch it again. So I'm refreshed. And yeah,
- 28:45Speaker 4: the exact thought I had was I was like, you
- 28:49Speaker 4: know why these movies are so good? It's because it
- 28:52Speaker 4: really is like a collection of scenes. And so like
- 28:56Speaker 4: you have these like standalone moments that kind of build together.
- 29:00Speaker 4: So I think that's how it sticks in your memory
- 29:02Speaker 4: is even if you forget, maybe you could go back
- 29:05Speaker 4: and be like, oh, I kind of forgot about that.
- 29:06Speaker 4: Or I kind of forgot about this. Like you remember
- 29:08Speaker 4: like five things from each movie.
- 29:10Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 29:10Speaker 4: And even your general, probably just person probably just knows
- 29:14Speaker 4: at least one or two scenes from each movie. Cause
- 29:16Speaker 4: like you said, just from like, oh yeah, that was
- 29:18Speaker 4: like in a commercial. Or I remember seeing that at
- 29:20Speaker 4: my brother's. play sometime like they've just seen it it's
- 29:24Speaker 4: very like the way it's shot is very like iconic
- 29:27Speaker 4: like the writing is very iconic like it's a lot
- 29:30Speaker 4: of like like I said when you watch it as
- 29:32Speaker 4: a whole sometimes maybe that can be the most I
- 29:34Speaker 4: guess like I don't know just like overtly like you
- 29:38Speaker 4: know like a bunch of like those office signs as
- 29:40Speaker 4: dialogue you know just like you can overcome but like
- 29:44Speaker 4: it works like I remember watching and like it always
- 29:46Speaker 4: hits me even though I've seen it a hundred times
- 29:47Speaker 4: like that scene when he's yelling at mickey uh before
- 29:52Speaker 4: he offers to train him uh like really early in
- 29:55Speaker 4: the movie and he says my life stinks yeah he's
- 29:58Speaker 4: like before that he's in the gym he's like you
- 30:00Speaker 4: became some second reign loan shark and he's like it's
- 30:02Speaker 4: a living and he's like it's a waste of life
- 30:04Speaker 4: and i'm like that's such a good line yeah so
- 30:07Speaker 4: and but it's like so it's like that'll stick with
- 30:09Speaker 4: you just the way they kind of write it that
- 30:11Speaker 4: it's just like a lot of good lines a lot
- 30:13Speaker 4: of like good shots like him running Against the water and,
- 30:17Speaker 4: you know, the stairs, obviously. Like, the stairs. Like, they're
- 30:20Speaker 4: just like, okay, this is a thing everyone will do
- 30:22Speaker 4: forever now.
- 30:23Speaker 3: It's true.
- 30:23Speaker 4: If you don't know about the movie. I'm interested in
- 30:25Speaker 4: what you thought since it was your first time seeing it.
- 30:27Speaker 5: Well, I probably didn't understand almost any of the dialogue
- 30:30Speaker 5: for the first 20 minutes. I could not make anything out,
- 30:34Speaker 5: but I was still getting the gist.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Just because of his thing?
- 30:38Speaker 5: His garbliness and just his awkwardness, like his awkward presence
- 30:43Speaker 5: and his awkward everything. I was like, your body language
- 30:45Speaker 5: and what you're saying do not match up almost ever.
- 30:48Speaker 5: So it was kind of hard to understand what he
- 30:50Speaker 5: was saying for the first little bit.
- 30:52Speaker 3: I was kind of excited to see that because I'm
- 30:55Speaker 3: so used to the... again, the Rocky three and four,
- 30:58Speaker 3: like way more polished and respected by everyone. And like the, the,
- 31:02Speaker 3: the version of him that has become like the pop
- 31:05Speaker 3: culture icon. But going back to this first one, I'm like,
- 31:08Speaker 3: he is so not what he probably even should be like,
- 31:13Speaker 3: even like watching him deal with, with the, with Adrian.
- 31:16Speaker 3: I'm like, normally any guy from the neighborhood who was
- 31:19Speaker 3: trying to hook up with his girl probably would just
- 31:21Speaker 3: be a jackass. And we'll just be trying to sleep
- 31:23Speaker 3: with her. And like, He's so heartfelt about it and
- 31:26Speaker 3: is such a.
- 31:27Speaker 5: But still very pushy.
- 31:28Speaker 3: Oh, pushy, but... When Adrian's in.
- 31:30Speaker 5: The apartment for the first time, I was like crawling
- 31:33Speaker 5: in my skin.
- 31:34Speaker 3: But she's equally as weird and awkward. So it's like,
- 31:37Speaker 3: I feel like it's not as bad because she's not
- 31:40Speaker 3: creeped out in a way that any normal person would
- 31:42Speaker 3: be because she's not normal either.
- 31:44Speaker 5: Yeah, she was just a shut-in.
- 31:45Speaker 4: I was surprised watching that now because it is, like
- 31:48Speaker 4: I said, you always feel like if you watch something
- 31:51Speaker 4: from the past... There's always bound to be something that's like,
- 31:53Speaker 4: how did this get through? But I think what saves
- 31:56Speaker 4: it is he says, I'm going to kiss you and
- 31:58Speaker 4: you don't have to kiss me back if you don't
- 32:00Speaker 4: want to. And then it's clear that he gives her
- 32:01Speaker 4: a little kiss on the cheek and then she's into it.
- 32:04Speaker 4: Which I feel like gives the viewer the, like you said,
- 32:06Speaker 4: even though he's being a little pushy. she's consenting to.
- 32:08Speaker 5: This yeah yeah every step of the way it was
- 32:11Speaker 5: just like good job yeah yeah totally it wasn't just
- 32:14Speaker 5: like grab her by the back of my neck and
- 32:16Speaker 5: yeah yeah and she won on her.
- 32:18Speaker 3: He he kept like offering and then she went up
- 32:20Speaker 3: there with him i'm like well again she's sort of
- 32:23Speaker 3: okay with all of this because as much as she
- 32:27Speaker 3: pretends like she's sort of not into anybody like he's
- 32:31Speaker 3: shown her so much affection now it's ridiculous yeah so
- 32:35Speaker 3: like again i i think i was kind of taken
- 32:37Speaker 3: with how like awkward he was and.
- 32:40Speaker 5: How yeah it was kind of more realistic of a
- 32:42Speaker 5: person to me like.
- 32:44Speaker 3: And like not not again sort of unusual because if
- 32:47Speaker 3: you were writing this character other than stallone like if
- 32:49Speaker 3: you sat down and some hacky writers just sat down
- 32:52Speaker 3: he'd be a big burly dude and he'd act like
- 32:56Speaker 3: a bit and i'm like that is not at all
- 32:57Speaker 3: what this guy comes off like like even to the
- 33:00Speaker 3: point of like he doesn't want to break anybody's thumbs
- 33:02Speaker 3: like he's always like so nice that it's like i
- 33:05Speaker 3: i kind of found that refreshing i'm like i would
- 33:08Speaker 3: expect this guy to be cookie cutter you know testosterone
- 33:12Speaker 3: jackass and like he's never that like at every turn
- 33:16Speaker 3: he makes a different choice i guess as the writer
- 33:19Speaker 3: and as the performance goes on and i'm like it's
- 33:22Speaker 3: kind of really interesting to watch from that aspect, but
- 33:25Speaker 3: I guess go on with the, I got sidetracked tangents
- 33:28Speaker 3: as we were saying. Yeah. That whole thing.
- 33:32Speaker 4: Well, and that's, I think that's, what's kind of interesting
- 33:34Speaker 4: about the first one. Cause like we now know what
- 33:37Speaker 4: it has become. And like, even probably someone watching it
- 33:40Speaker 4: for the first time, like, you know, at least the general,
- 33:43Speaker 4: like there are six more of these. Whereas like the
- 33:45Speaker 4: people watching it in real time are just like, this
- 33:47Speaker 4: is a movie that's out now and I'm going to
- 33:49Speaker 4: watch it.
- 33:49Speaker 5: But I literally don't know any, like, I know that
- 33:52Speaker 5: Russia is in the fourth one. I know about that,
- 33:55Speaker 5: but I don't know anything about the plot of any
- 33:57Speaker 5: of them. To me, you know, Rocky lost. And then
- 34:02Speaker 5: the movie ends and that's it.
- 34:03Speaker 4: So you might think that he just always loses.
- 34:06Speaker 3: Spoiler alert. Spoiler alert. Did you know that was coming
- 34:09Speaker 3: from pop culture?
- 34:10Speaker 2: Yes.
- 34:11Speaker 3: I did know that he lost.
- 34:12Speaker 5: But I was still like.
- 34:13Speaker 4: Because yeah, that is sometimes like most people I think
- 34:15Speaker 4: if you ask like, oh, he won.
- 34:16Speaker 3: I mean, yeah. I think people... Because I did that too.
- 34:19Speaker 3: I remember like thinking back, I think I was mixing
- 34:22Speaker 3: up stuff in the set. Because one and two were
- 34:23Speaker 3: kind of similar except he's a little further along and
- 34:26Speaker 3: then there's the winning versus the losing. So I mean,
- 34:29Speaker 3: one and two I think... kind of have gelled in
- 34:32Speaker 3: people's mind as their own like it's just one big
- 34:34Speaker 3: movie there so i think by the end it's like
- 34:36Speaker 3: oh yeah and then he wins well i.
- 34:38Speaker 4: Think yeah that way it gels and i think the
- 34:41Speaker 4: second way it gels is just like it's a great
- 34:43Speaker 4: sports movie what do 95 of great sport movies have
- 34:46Speaker 4: in common and they win underdog wins yeah um i
- 34:50Speaker 4: well that's what i was meaning not even that you've
- 34:52Speaker 4: not seen the other ones but i guess it's just
- 34:54Speaker 4: like Now that we know what happens, it's like, I
- 34:56Speaker 4: think why one stands out is because it's essentially an
- 34:59Speaker 4: origin story.
- 35:00Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 35:01Speaker 4: But you didn't know that if you didn't know it
- 35:03Speaker 4: was going to be sequels. You didn't know that. But
- 35:04Speaker 4: now that there's a whole thing of sequels, you're like, oh,
- 35:05Speaker 4: this is his Batman Begins. This is like how he
- 35:08Speaker 4: gets his powers.
- 35:09Speaker 5: Instead of just being Batman. Yeah.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:13Speaker 3: So.
- 35:14Speaker 4: Well, that's the other thing that I thought was... Again,
- 35:16Speaker 4: I was trying to find new takes. Because I'm like,
- 35:19Speaker 4: I've seen this a bunch of times, but I want
- 35:20Speaker 4: to bring interesting things to this podcast. And I was like,
- 35:25Speaker 4: you know what the coolest thing I think about the
- 35:27Speaker 4: first one is? Is that every one of the main
- 35:31Speaker 4: characters is a loser. And they almost... Like, Pauly always calls...
- 35:38Speaker 4: uh uh adrian a loser like just straight up like
- 35:41Speaker 4: you're a loser he is a total loser mickey is
- 35:46Speaker 4: a has-been loser rocky's the biggest loser and they all
- 35:49Speaker 4: elevate through this one moment to lose they lose and
- 35:53Speaker 4: they all lose but they lose the right way and
- 35:56Speaker 4: i think like that's almost like a better message to
- 35:58Speaker 4: give the general public because it's not like you have
- 36:01Speaker 4: to be the poorest person ever and then be Bill Gates.
- 36:04Speaker 4: It's like, no, you're just better than your neighborhood or
- 36:07Speaker 4: better than your circumstances just by not having that attitude. Like,
- 36:11Speaker 4: he lost like a winner. So it's like, you don't
- 36:13Speaker 4: always have to win. You don't have to become a
- 36:14Speaker 4: millionaire for your life to be successful. You just have
- 36:16Speaker 4: to do better than the people around you who probably
- 36:19Speaker 4: just have a shitty attitude.
- 36:20Speaker 5: Yeah, and the whole community rallied around him.
- 36:24Speaker 3: Oh, totally, yeah.
- 36:25Speaker 5: But yeah, the whole community rallied around him and the
- 36:27Speaker 5: whole community was so invested in it that it did
- 36:30Speaker 5: feel like Even though I knew he was going to lose,
- 36:32Speaker 5: it was kind of, like, very frustrating to see, like,
- 36:34Speaker 5: all these people, like, yeah.
- 36:36Speaker 3: Finally somebody for us.
- 36:37Speaker 5: And I could not believe that there was nothing after he... Like,
- 36:40Speaker 5: I thought there would be, like, 20 more minutes of
- 36:43Speaker 5: seeing how, you know, they recovered and everything. It was just, like,
- 36:47Speaker 5: he lost. He didn't really care. He just wanted Adrian.
- 36:50Speaker 5: And then the credits rolled.
- 36:52Speaker 4: Well, and, like, I heard, I think, an interview with Stallone.
- 36:55Speaker 4: And I was like, oh, that's interesting. And now I
- 36:58Speaker 4: can't help but notice it when I watch it. But
- 36:59Speaker 4: he said... That he ended the movie when he did
- 37:03Speaker 4: because he noticed like the frame they stop it on.
- 37:06Speaker 4: If you go one more frame, like his head's kind
- 37:08Speaker 4: of coming up and then it kind of dips down.
- 37:11Speaker 4: And so he's like, he's like, he thinks that the
- 37:13Speaker 4: moment it ends on is the highest moment of this
- 37:16Speaker 4: character's life. Like he has the woman he loves. He
- 37:19Speaker 4: just made it all 15 rounds. And now it just
- 37:22Speaker 4: starts going down a little bit. Like now he has
- 37:24Speaker 4: to go home and his life continues, blah, blah, blah.
- 37:26Speaker 4: So he's like, he's like, I want it to end
- 37:27Speaker 4: at like the highest point of this guy's life. And
- 37:29Speaker 4: I was like, this is kind of interesting.
- 37:31Speaker 3: It's funny that you went sort of the same place.
- 37:33Speaker 3: Like that's what I came here to specifically talk about
- 37:36Speaker 3: was that thing. It's like, to me, going back into it,
- 37:40Speaker 3: you expect it to be, okay, it's a boxing movie.
- 37:43Speaker 3: And then over the years, a lot of people have
- 37:45Speaker 3: been like, well, really, it's kind of a love story
- 37:47Speaker 3: more than it is a boxing movie. And I'm like, okay, Yes,
- 37:50Speaker 3: but I still feel like those are two and three.
- 37:53Speaker 3: I was watching it again this time. I'm like, this
- 37:56Speaker 3: is just about dealing with not being where you want
- 38:01Speaker 3: to be in life. And they're all at that stage.
- 38:04Speaker 3: They all are dealing with this... Especially, and the one
- 38:09Speaker 3: that got to me is, like, it also becomes about age. And, like,
- 38:12Speaker 3: you wouldn't think that. This is so early in, like, his, but, like, even, like,
- 38:16Speaker 3: in the real world, when he's writing this movie, he's, like, 29. Oh, yeah. So, like,
- 38:22Speaker 3: so much of this is kind of Stallone, like. That's
- 38:25Speaker 3: pretty fucking late to be an actor. You're getting into, like,
- 38:28Speaker 3: to wait for your big break at 29 in Hollywood is, like,
- 38:32Speaker 3: damn near unheard of. I mean, now we're getting a
- 38:35Speaker 3: little more. People are kind of coming into it a
- 38:37Speaker 3: little later. But especially back in the day, like, by 19,
- 38:40Speaker 3: if you weren't a superstar, you probably weren't going to be.
- 38:43Speaker 3: I mean, again, there's... times when that's not true but
- 38:47Speaker 3: for the industry as a whole it's like if you
- 38:49Speaker 3: don't come into it young you're also gonna get spit
- 38:52Speaker 3: out of it pretty young so it's like for somebody
- 38:54Speaker 3: to drag on all the way through their 20s and
- 38:57Speaker 3: still not real I mean he turned up in some
- 38:59Speaker 3: movies you know I'm a huge fan of Death Race
- 39:02Speaker 3: 2000 so I think that might be his finest role
- 39:05Speaker 3: but but no I mean like just the fact that
- 39:09Speaker 3: like he struggled as much as he did in the
- 39:12Speaker 3: real world and then to watch this rocky character come
- 39:14Speaker 3: along and like Yeah.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:20Speaker 3: Athlete and you're like wow this is not okay so
- 39:23Speaker 3: then you see all these other people that he comes
- 39:25Speaker 3: in contact with and like she's damn near the same
- 39:28Speaker 3: age yeah and has barely left her house you know
- 39:31Speaker 3: it's like she deals with puppies better than humans and
- 39:34Speaker 3: that's the entirety of her life and and paulie is
- 39:37Speaker 3: just a asshole in this like he really like again
- 39:40Speaker 3: i think i remembered him more from sequels where he
- 39:43Speaker 3: becomes just sort of a lovable curmudgeon you know but
- 39:45Speaker 3: like he's a dick.
- 39:46Speaker 5: He's throwing a goddamn turkey out the window you know
- 39:49Speaker 5: how long it takes for that to cook that's what
- 39:50Speaker 5: i'm saying i'm like that's.
- 39:52Speaker 4: Probably the hardest scene to watch i agree yeah i
- 39:54Speaker 4: think of that every time.
- 39:55Speaker 3: I'm like you don't look like you're missing too many
- 39:56Speaker 3: meals i can't believe you threw out food buddy yeah
- 40:00Speaker 3: like that seems unlikely too but yeah i was like
- 40:03Speaker 3: the two or three like that scene he's just so
- 40:06Speaker 3: terrible to her And the drunken baseball bat scene, I'm like, okay,
- 40:09Speaker 3: now he's just fucking violent. Like, it's hard to watch
- 40:14Speaker 3: him in general because he's not even really that lovable
- 40:16Speaker 3: at this point. Like, you see that there's still heart there. Like,
- 40:20Speaker 3: he is kind of a good person at his very core,
- 40:24Speaker 3: but he's such a jackass and he's so hardened and
- 40:27Speaker 3: bitter at this point and drunk half the time that, like,
- 40:30Speaker 3: But again, it's his way of dealing with the fact
- 40:32Speaker 3: that he's kind of a loser. Like he looks way
- 40:35Speaker 3: older than them and he's still nowhere and like working
- 40:38Speaker 3: at the packing plant that he spends every day trying
- 40:42Speaker 3: to get out of. Every time he sees Rocky, he's like, hey,
- 40:45Speaker 3: can you give me a job? Hey, like I'm like,
- 40:47Speaker 3: if you're so desperate to get away from that place
- 40:50Speaker 3: and you still can't do it, I mean, that's. like
- 40:53Speaker 3: everything is so sad when you stop and look at
- 40:56Speaker 3: this and especially factoring mickey in i mean like has
- 41:00Speaker 3: been and still like has been 50 years ago you
- 41:04Speaker 3: know and so he's been dragging on for 50 years
- 41:08Speaker 3: never ever getting close to having any level of success
- 41:11Speaker 3: like he did when he was a kid and i'm
- 41:13Speaker 3: like this is overpoweringly like depressing if you want to
- 41:18Speaker 3: take it that way but i think that's the amazing
- 41:22Speaker 3: part of this movie is it's, it is written so
- 41:24Speaker 3: that it is inspirational in its own way. And everybody
- 41:27Speaker 3: is kind of like, maybe because of these personal interactions,
- 41:31Speaker 3: maybe because maybe Rocky is the touchstone in this. And
- 41:35Speaker 3: he's like, everybody that comes in contact with him kind
- 41:38Speaker 3: of gets into his little dream. And like, they all
- 41:42Speaker 3: start to improve their lives too. But it is really interesting.
- 41:46Speaker 3: Like watching how everybody is just at, at, living this
- 41:50Speaker 3: horrible like version of their life and aware of it
- 41:54Speaker 3: and they call each other out for it and it's
- 41:55Speaker 3: like i don't know that part was really kind of
- 41:58Speaker 3: like surprising because i did not remember any of that
- 42:01Speaker 3: being there i remember all the standard boxing stuff but
- 42:04Speaker 3: like the the level of like just dealing with I
- 42:07Speaker 3: don't want to be a bum.
- 42:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 42:09Speaker 3: That is the running theme of this movie. Even to
- 42:11Speaker 3: the point of the end. The end isn't, it's not, again,
- 42:14Speaker 3: everybody would kind of like think about, oh yeah, Rocky,
- 42:16Speaker 3: it's about him being a big superstar. And I'm like,
- 42:19Speaker 3: he doesn't even care about winning.
- 42:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:20Speaker 3: All he wants to do is go the distance. Like
- 42:22Speaker 3: that is the only thing that is important to him
- 42:24Speaker 3: is lasting the entire fight.
- 42:26Speaker 4: That is winning. Because like to him, he's like, I
- 42:29Speaker 4: want to do something. He's like, it's like no one's
- 42:31Speaker 4: ever gone the distance. So he's like, I just want
- 42:32Speaker 4: to do something no one's done. Yeah. Cause then that
- 42:35Speaker 4: means I'm special. Like I don't need to win to
- 42:36Speaker 4: be special. I just need to do something that no
- 42:38Speaker 4: one's done. Yeah.
- 42:39Speaker 3: It's like you're saying.
- 42:40Speaker 4: Especially like no one from around here. Cause I don't
- 42:42Speaker 4: want to be another bum from the neighborhood.
- 42:43Speaker 3: And sort of proving himself to himself more than anything. Again,
- 42:47Speaker 3: you notice he's not really into the media at that point.
- 42:49Speaker 3: Like he doesn't really care about the money. Like as
- 42:52Speaker 3: much as he needs it, he's obviously broke, but like
- 42:55Speaker 3: he doesn't really seem affected by that either. He just
- 42:58Speaker 3: wants to prove to himself and, kind of to his
- 43:01Speaker 3: dad we barely touch on that but there's a lot
- 43:04Speaker 3: of like that's what's going on there that like he's
- 43:08Speaker 3: not that bum that everybody has said that he was
- 43:10Speaker 3: for the last 30 years of his life so I
- 43:13Speaker 3: don't know that that's sort of like overwhelming going back
- 43:16Speaker 3: and rewatching this is how is how like it is
- 43:19Speaker 3: about that to me more than anything and Like the
- 43:23Speaker 3: romance part is really kind of sweet and I do
- 43:25Speaker 3: like that. But I still feel like that's secondary. And
- 43:28Speaker 3: the boxing that it's supposed to be is like third
- 43:30Speaker 3: on the list. It's way down there.
- 43:34Speaker 4: Yeah, it's definitely like a coming of age story for
- 43:37Speaker 4: people in their 30s.
- 43:38Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 43:39Speaker 4: Which I guess nowadays seems kind of like, kind of.
- 43:43Speaker 4: I mean, we've seen that a lot now. Most of
- 43:45Speaker 4: them star Paul Rudd, but like, you know, but like
- 43:48Speaker 4: that was kind of the first one to do that
- 43:49Speaker 4: about here's 30 year olds figuring it out, you know?
- 43:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:52Speaker 3: At this point you're, yeah. If you haven't already figured
- 43:55Speaker 3: it out 10 years ago, you're kind of a loser.
- 43:57Speaker 3: So the fact that you're still trying to get your
- 43:59Speaker 3: shit together is like, it is kind of amazing. And like,
- 44:03Speaker 3: I do like, again, touching on the father thing, I
- 44:07Speaker 3: will almost give it credit and maybe it's his writing,
- 44:09Speaker 3: but like the fact that they really don't hit you
- 44:12Speaker 3: over the head with any of that. It's like, that's that,
- 44:15Speaker 3: that was one of the, like, there's two like amazing
- 44:18Speaker 3: scenes that are kind of understated. And the first one
- 44:22Speaker 3: is just him standing there at the mirror, looking at
- 44:24Speaker 3: that picture and And, like, there's nobody else there. There's
- 44:28Speaker 3: nobody to talk to. He doesn't say a word. But
- 44:31Speaker 3: you already, like, you're like, okay, well, this is the
- 44:34Speaker 3: story of Rocky. Him looking in the mirror and dealing
- 44:37Speaker 3: with whatever went on in the past with him as
- 44:40Speaker 3: that little kid on the side. I'm like, that's the
- 44:42Speaker 3: reason he's done everything up to this point. That's the
- 44:45Speaker 3: reason he's fighting to not be a bum. Like, everything
- 44:47Speaker 3: is contained in that one little shot of him staring
- 44:51Speaker 3: in the mirror.
- 44:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:52Speaker 3: And the other, like, the amazing one is him before
- 44:55Speaker 3: the fight when he goes into the lay down with
- 44:58Speaker 3: Adrian and he's just like, I don't think I can
- 45:01Speaker 3: do it. And, like, that performance, like, again, you can
- 45:04Speaker 3: question all you want about Stallone as an actor, but, like,
- 45:06Speaker 3: watch that scene.
- 45:08Speaker 4: Like, he's amazing. My defense of Stallone is that he's
- 45:10Speaker 4: not a bad actor. He just has no range. But
- 45:13Speaker 4: if you put him in his range, he can do fine.
- 45:15Speaker 4: He can play Stallone really well. and it's the lone
- 45:18Speaker 4: adjacent characters he.
- 45:20Speaker 3: He knows yeah well i mean even the the other
- 45:23Speaker 3: one i will always go to and it's much later
- 45:25Speaker 3: in his life i think in cop land he's great.
- 45:28Speaker 13: I love cop land no one likes cop land i
- 45:30Speaker 13: love cop land and i need to i need to
- 45:32Speaker 13: re-watch it so we need to do another episode just
- 45:34Speaker 13: on cop land so i can watch it again but
- 45:36Speaker 13: it again i think it is him dealing with.
- 45:40Speaker 3: Maybe it's very similar maybe it's if Rocky hadn't won
- 45:46Speaker 3: or gone the distance or made it to the end
- 45:48Speaker 3: this is him 30 years later getting a crappy security
- 45:51Speaker 3: guard job he's kind of in that same I'm a
- 45:54Speaker 3: loser and I'm much older now and I still kind
- 45:58Speaker 3: of want to redeem myself for all these years and
- 46:00Speaker 3: prove that I'm not a loser it's again not the
- 46:04Speaker 3: furthest thing from the Rocky Stallone performance but Again, that's
- 46:09Speaker 3: a great performance that he never really gets much credit for.
- 46:12Speaker 4: They talk about him like he gets credit for putting
- 46:14Speaker 4: on the weight, which people do. But they don't really
- 46:18Speaker 4: talk about it. It's not the best movie, but I
- 46:21Speaker 4: think it's super underrated.
- 46:22Speaker 3: Yeah, well, and mostly his performance. The other stuff is
- 46:24Speaker 3: a little standard cop stuff. A lot of the other
- 46:27Speaker 3: stuff going on, it's not bad. It's good performances along.
- 46:31Speaker 4: The way, but.
- 46:32Speaker 3: The only thing that really stood out to me was
- 46:35Speaker 3: that character and his version of that character. I think
- 46:38Speaker 3: it elevates the whole rest of the movie. So again,
- 46:42Speaker 3: I think you can get really good stuff out of him.
- 46:46Speaker 3: It's just, I feel like he got kind of lazy
- 46:48Speaker 3: there too. Oh, totally. Again, mirroring the Rocky story, by
- 46:52Speaker 3: the time he hits the excess years, it's like, don't
- 46:56Speaker 3: get me wrong, the other thing I've watched more than
- 46:58Speaker 3: I ever have needed to is Cobra.
- 47:00Speaker 12: Cobra's so good.
- 47:01Speaker 3: God, I love Cobra. It is not a good movie
- 47:04Speaker 3: at all. I've fully admitted to myself, but I'm like,
- 47:08Speaker 3: I don't care. It is so damn entertaining. and ridiculous
- 47:12Speaker 3: and over the top and silly at times.
- 47:15Speaker 4: Over the top was one of those movies.
- 47:21Speaker 3: It's another ridiculous over the top movie literally but yes
- 47:26Speaker 3: i mean there's several times where he's just like i
- 47:28Speaker 3: don't care i want to do this like cobra is
- 47:30Speaker 3: a good dude.
- 47:31Speaker 4: Do you know oh did you watch they made it
- 47:33Speaker 4: doc because that's a canon film Did you watch that
- 47:36Speaker 4: documentary on Netflix about canon?
- 47:37Speaker 3: About the crazy brothers that directed all this?
- 47:40Speaker 4: He got paid like a ton of money for that.
- 47:42Speaker 4: It was something where they gave him like an op
- 47:44Speaker 4: because he was a huge star. So they're like, we'll
- 47:46Speaker 4: give you, you know, $ 40 million just to option your
- 47:50Speaker 4: next picture.
- 47:50Speaker 3: When nobody was getting that kind of money.
- 47:52Speaker 4: Right. And like full direct, like full creative control. And
- 47:56Speaker 4: he's like, all right, I'm going to take your $ 40
- 47:57Speaker 4: million and the movie I'm choosing, we're doing arm wrestling.
- 48:00Speaker 4: They're like, Okay.
- 48:02Speaker 2: All right.
- 48:04Speaker 3: I hope you turn your hat around.
- 48:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:07Speaker 3: That'll save this movie. Hope there's some sort of contraption
- 48:11Speaker 3: in your big rig so you can train while you drive.
- 48:14Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 48:14Speaker 3: God, that movie's so ridiculous.
- 48:16Speaker 4: It's so crazy. It's so crazy.
- 48:22Speaker 10: I'll fight for love. I'll prove to you I got
- 48:25Speaker 10: the moves like no one else.
- 48:29Speaker 4: Boy, she's a fool.
- 48:31Speaker 10: She's telling lies and talking jive. She can go to hell.
- 48:54Speaker 6: Yes, folks, it's intermission time. So how about taking a break?
- 48:57Speaker 6: Get out and stretch a little and relax before the

- 49:46Speaker 4: Now, tell me, how do you make money?
- 49:49Speaker 6: I knock people down.
- 49:51Speaker 2: You mean like a prize fighter? No, they're pickup fights.
- 49:55Speaker 2: The money's made on bets.
- 49:57Speaker 4: What does it feel like to knock somebody down?
- 50:00Speaker 2: It makes me feel a hell of a lot better
- 50:02Speaker 2: than it does him.
- 50:02Speaker 3: 1933, America had hit the skids.
- 50:08Speaker 6: People were out of work and out of luck.
- 50:10Speaker 2: Third refill cost a nickel.
- 50:12Speaker 4: Life was as tough as a cheap steak.
- 50:14Speaker 2: Suppose you've been down the long, hard road. It hasn't.
- 50:17Speaker 2: It was hard times.
- 50:19Speaker 7: I got a husband in jail, no job, and no prospects.
- 50:23Speaker 2: I don't look past the next bend in the road.
- 50:25Speaker 6: A man had to live by his wits.
- 50:27Speaker 2: Well, my man's just starting out. It's good, but I
- 50:30Speaker 2: have to get long odds.
- 50:31Speaker 6: What kind of odds are you talking about?
- 50:32Speaker 2: Five to one. Three to one. or by his fists.
- 50:38Speaker 6: Columbia Pictures presents Hard Times, starring Charles Bronson as Cheney,
- 50:44Speaker 6: a drifter. When I get enough change in my pocket,
- 50:46Speaker 6: I'm going.
- 50:47Speaker 2: A loner. Are you going to stay the night? Not
- 50:50Speaker 2: this time.
- 50:51Speaker 1: A man who spoke soft.
- 50:52Speaker 2: I barely know you. Yeah, but would you like to?
- 50:55Speaker 2: And hit hard.
- 50:56Speaker 6: James Coburn as Speed, a born con man.
- 50:59Speaker 2: 50-50 in all scratch bets and expenses.
- 51:02Speaker 3: All side bets, I keep 75%.
- 51:03Speaker 2: That's how it works.
- 51:04Speaker 6: Who can make a fortune in a day.
- 51:06Speaker 2: I propose a toast to the best man I know, me.
- 51:10Speaker 4: And lose it in a minute.
- 51:12Speaker 2: I'm flat broke. I need some money fast. What the
- 51:15Speaker 2: hell are you doing?
- 51:16Speaker 12: You don't want no trouble.
- 51:18Speaker 7: Just you pay your debts.
- 51:21Speaker 11: Speed was the hustler.
- 51:22Speaker 2: It was too damned easy. There ain't no rules about
- 51:25Speaker 2: that except who wins.
- 51:26Speaker 6: Change was the hitter.
- 51:28Speaker 2: You ever get scared when you do work? I don't
- 51:31Speaker 2: think about it.
- 51:33Speaker 7: Together, they just couldn't be beat.
- 51:38Speaker 6: You give us our damn money now.
- 51:40Speaker 2: You want that money, take it. Now I got the gun.
- 51:46Speaker 2: I don't think you want to use it.
- 51:49Speaker 6: That's one way.
- 51:50Speaker 2: You want to see another?
- 51:53Speaker 6: Charles Bronson, James Colburn, Jill Ireland, and Strother Martin.
- 51:58Speaker 2: They're a knockout.
- 52:01Speaker 6: In hard times.

- 53:20Speaker 1: It's part of your problem, you know.
- 53:31Speaker 6: You haven't seen enough movies. All of life's riddles.
- 53:34Speaker 2: Are answered in the movies. And now, on with the show.
- 53:50Speaker 1: Knockin' you out.
- 53:51Speaker 10: Like Rocky Balboa Drown you in a flood deeper than
- 54:02Speaker 10: Noah Knockin' you out like Rocky Balboa Drown you in
- 54:18Speaker 10: a flood who.
- 54:23Speaker 4: Even thought it's weird that like i'm sure you could
- 54:34Speaker 4: look back at any decade and maybe find little things
- 54:36Speaker 4: but for me 80s is always the decade to be like, man,
- 54:40Speaker 4: everything had its moment in the sun. Kind of. Like,
- 54:45Speaker 4: you know, arm wrestling had its 15 minutes of fame
- 54:47Speaker 4: where everyone was like, arm wrestling's the thing. We're going
- 54:49Speaker 4: to have a movie about it. ESPN2' s going to show
- 54:51Speaker 4: the tournaments. It's going to be hot for like a
- 54:53Speaker 4: whole month.
- 54:55Speaker 3: Well, that's the thing. We didn't have near as much
- 54:57Speaker 3: thrown at us either. So it's like, I think you
- 54:59Speaker 3: could coast for a year on like, I'm realizing it's
- 55:01Speaker 3: pretty cool. Yeah. Where now it's like, you got maybe
- 55:04Speaker 3: 15 minutes and people have moved. Not even that half
- 55:07Speaker 3: the time. Like people now can't even finish typing their
- 55:10Speaker 3: text about how stupid something is before they're watching something
- 55:13Speaker 3: else stupid that they want to make fun of.
- 55:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 55:14Speaker 3: So it's like, we're so ADHD at this point. We're
- 55:18Speaker 3: so like, we can't focus on anything at this point.
- 55:21Speaker 3: So I don't know. It's, it's, it's weird that we
- 55:26Speaker 3: had this time where it was like, it was okay
- 55:28Speaker 3: for things to just kind of coast and, And movies
- 55:31Speaker 3: would come out and stay in a theater for years
- 55:32Speaker 3: and you could be like, yeah, this is a great movie.
- 55:34Speaker 3: Let's go see it nine more times in the theater
- 55:37Speaker 3: as opposed to now when you've got a week and
- 55:39Speaker 3: a half before they pull it out of theaters. I
- 55:41Speaker 3: think it just gave everything time to kind of cruise
- 55:44Speaker 3: along and still be sort of popular for a little while.
- 55:47Speaker 3: But yeah, 80s, I think that's it. I still feel
- 55:50Speaker 3: like 70s is maybe the most interesting decade. I think
- 55:54Speaker 3: they did stuff that had never been done and still
- 55:57Speaker 3: kind of has not been touched in some cases. But
- 56:00Speaker 3: the 80s became the point when they threw a ton
- 56:02Speaker 3: of money at it. And people then had financial freedom
- 56:05Speaker 3: to do whatever the hell they want. And you start
- 56:08Speaker 3: to see it on the screen. And you see some
- 56:10Speaker 3: crazy ridiculous stuff that, again, I don't know if any
- 56:13Speaker 3: other decade touches the excess and ridiculousness of the 80s.
- 56:17Speaker 4: I just think it's pretty clear to me that all
- 56:21Speaker 4: art is drug-fueled from the beginning of time. And you
- 56:25Speaker 4: can define the generation's art by what was the drug
- 56:28Speaker 4: of that time. And you cannot look at 80s art
- 56:31Speaker 4: and not say this was not the generation of cocaine.
- 56:34Speaker 4: There's a little cocaine decade.
- 56:36Speaker 3: So much cocaine.
- 56:36Speaker 4: The music and the movies and everything. You're like, man, everything.
- 56:39Speaker 3: And everything's like, ha, yeah, yeah.
- 56:40Speaker 4: Yeah, everything is fast and confident and loud. And like,
- 56:45Speaker 4: I don't know. I've been... I don't do cocaine, but
- 56:48Speaker 4: I've been around it a lot, and I've been cornered
- 56:50Speaker 4: many times by cocaine people.
- 56:53Speaker 3: I hear stories about the clubs.
- 56:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm like, this is just like listening to, I
- 56:57Speaker 4: don't know, like Duran Duran.
- 56:59Speaker 3: What would be the 90s? Well, that's a great idea.
- 57:02Speaker 5: What's the drug of choice for the 90s?
- 57:04Speaker 3: I was doing the 60s. I'm like, do we start
- 57:07Speaker 3: with marijuana and then cruise into like acid for the 70s? Like,
- 57:12Speaker 3: what's the drug of choice in the middle there?
- 57:14Speaker 4: 90s, maybe weed. Or booze? I don't know because I
- 57:17Speaker 4: think of like grunge. It like went back.
- 57:20Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 57:20Speaker 3: It might have switched to alcohol in the 90s. Yeah.
- 57:24Speaker 3: I can see that. Because I feel like now it's
- 57:26Speaker 3: more weed oriented.
- 57:27Speaker 4: Now it's super weed.
- 57:28Speaker 3: Now it's so weed oriented.
- 57:29Speaker 4: Everyone just smokes weed.
- 57:30Speaker 3: It's crazy. It's yeah. It's just it is culture at
- 57:33Speaker 3: this point. It is just pop culture as a whole
- 57:36Speaker 3: has just found a new level for it.
- 57:38Speaker 2: But yeah.
- 57:39Speaker 5: I want Eric Andre to make a movie.
- 57:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 57:41Speaker 5: And just be like bring it back to the acid trips.
- 57:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:46Speaker 3: That can probably be arranged. I get hold of.
- 57:49Speaker 8: Every worthwhile contender and they all say the same thing.
- 57:52Speaker 4: Five weeks just isn't enough time to get into shape. Oh,
- 57:55Speaker 4: shape nothing, man. They're afraid.
- 57:57Speaker 7: Hell, they know everybody in the world is going to
- 57:59Speaker 7: see this fight and none of them got a prayer
- 58:00Speaker 7: whipping me.
- 58:01Speaker 14: So they're making excuses.
- 58:02Speaker 7: So they don't have to be the chump to get
- 58:03Speaker 7: whipped in front of the whole civilized world. All I
- 58:06Speaker 7: can say is I'm a good promoter.
- 58:09Speaker 9: I've promoted fights in every goddamn country in the world.
- 58:12Speaker 4: And I've broken my ass over this one. Then I
- 58:14Speaker 4: don't know what the hell else to do.
- 58:22Speaker 3: I do.
- 58:25Speaker 7: Without a ranked contender, what this fighter's gonna need is
- 58:28Speaker 7: a novelty. This is the land of opportunity, right? So
- 58:33Speaker 7: Apollo Creed, on January 1st, gives a local underdog fighter
- 58:37Speaker 7: an opportunity. A Snow White underdog, and I'm gonna put
- 58:41Speaker 7: his face on this poster with me. And I'll tell
- 58:43Speaker 7: you why. Because I'm sentimental. And a lot of other
- 58:48Speaker 7: people in this country are just as sentimental and there's
- 58:50Speaker 7: nothing they'd like better than to see Apollo Creed give
- 58:53Speaker 7: a local Philadelphia boy a shot at the greatest title
- 58:56Speaker 7: in the world on this country's biggest birthday.
- 58:59Speaker 4: Now that's the way I see it.
- 59:01Speaker 2: And that's the way it's gonna be. Apollo, I like it.
- 59:06Speaker 4: It's very American.
- 59:08Speaker 2: No, Jurgens.
- 59:10Speaker 3: It's very smart I guess we have to sort of
- 59:14Speaker 3: deal with Apollo because that is that's what I was
- 59:18Speaker 3: saying before like you get this perfect version of of
- 59:23Speaker 3: like the polar opposites you know which once again we
- 59:26Speaker 3: start to see in number three but like you have
- 59:29Speaker 3: like rocky just being broke and living in that little
- 59:33Speaker 3: apartment and and you know his way of exercising is
- 59:36Speaker 3: running on the streets holding bricks you know it's like
- 59:39Speaker 3: he's the most ghetto version of working out ever and
- 59:43Speaker 3: like you start to see like that is a great
- 59:46Speaker 3: scene of watching apollo's guy they're watching the news coverage
- 59:50Speaker 3: and rocky is just pummeling meat You know, he's literally
- 59:55Speaker 3: willing to get his hands bloody. Like, literally. And, like,
- 59:59Speaker 3: he's watching and going, no, this guy's not messing around.
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: And Apollo's in the middle of a business deal, not
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: even watching what's going on with this guy. And it's like,
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: this is why you'll eventually lose. It's like, you get
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: to a point where you're so, like, focused on the
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: business aspect and, like, your career part of it versus
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: the hunger version that Stallone still has at this point.
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: And again, to watch that kind of come full circle
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: by the two movies later, it's like it is kind
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: of interesting and maybe is part of that like comment
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: on professional sports and what happens because that's pretty regular.
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: Like that is.
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: Kind of how those things go i think.
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: Carl weathers is great in that role i think in
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: the first one he is very passable i think probably
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: just via instruction not a not a diss on him
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: he's pretty much just doing a ali knockoff yeah which
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: it was inspired by right yeah but then by the
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: second one he has to go so heel and he
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: does it so good He does it so good. So
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: I think his character in general, I think it peaks
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: in two.
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: And I think it's just, well, then making that really
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: hard turn by the third one where it's like, okay,
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: we've spent two movies hating this dude. And like, now
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: we have to change our mind. And like, it's almost
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: overly likable at some points. You're just like, Wait, is
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: this the same guy we hated a movie ago? It
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: is an odd arc for his character because, again, he's
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: almost non-affecting in this movie. That's the most useful scene
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: is that one where you're watching him not pay attention
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: to his sport that he's supposed to care about. But
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: other than that, he really is just all pumped. Yeah,
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: he's very neutral. He's just there to fill that void
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: in the script. We needed somebody to be kind of
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: like Ali. We needed somebody to represent that he's very
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: impressive at building this up. And you do see it
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: almost as that wrestling aspect of, I can talk a
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: good game. That's what I would say.
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: I'd say in the first one, pretty much his device
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: as a quote-unquote villain is just that He is so good,
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: it would be hard to beat him. But by the
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: second one, it's like, I hate this guy. I want
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: him to lose. He becomes a true villain as opposed
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: to more of just a hill to climb.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: He's not overly important, really. Which, again, I didn't remember.
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: I kind of thought it was more of a one
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: versus the other. But again, that's not what he's fighting against.
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: It's like the other aspects of his life is a
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: way bigger challenge for him. Than beating Apollo, which doesn't
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: even come into play by the end, you realize.
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: And I remember a funny story I heard about Carl
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: Weathers' casting was that... I guess he came in for
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: his audition and he was running lines with Stallone. And
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: you know, Stallone's like an unknown at the time. So
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: he's reading a few lines and he gets kind of
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: frustrated and he looks at the director and he goes...
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: you know, like, this is fine and all, but I
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: could really do a lot better job if you let
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: me run lines with a real actor. Because he just
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: thought he was just, like, a stand-in for the auditions,
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: and the director was like, that's Sylvester Stallone, he's the
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: star and writer of the movie. He wrote the screenplay. Yeah,
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: Stallone said, like, after that comment, he was like, this
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: is the guy. Like, anyone that would be that arrogant, like,
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: this is the guy.
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: That is Apollo Creed. Hilarious.
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: So I was kind of uncertain about this detail, like,
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: because they say in the middle of the fight, like,
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: they're like, this guy doesn't know that this is, this
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: isn't a real fight, you know, whatever, whatever. Is that
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: just because they're like, Apollo's the best of all time?
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: Or are they like, He's going to win either way.
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: Like, if they go to the 15 rounds, Apollo's going
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: to win. Which, was it just his guys that were
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: saying that?
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: I think he just meant, like, spiritually. Like, Apollo thought
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: this was, like, he kind of, this will.
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: Be great publicity. Like a cute little show. It wasn't
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: supposed to be real funny.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: In his mind.
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: And he just tried to tell him, like, no, this
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: guy does not think that. He has a chance to
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: totally change his life. So you need to, even if
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: you think you're better than him, you need to realize, like,
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: He's fighting at a different level than you, and if
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: you want to beat him, you've got to get up
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: to that level.
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: Again, he's fighting a different fight than you. It wasn't
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: really even a fight for him. It was a publicity stunt.
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: It was.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: Again, he chose him specifically because he liked the name.
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: He had never seen Fight. He didn't care about any
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: of that. It was just a weird Italian tie-in to
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: the Bicentennial. That'll work. He put that much thought into it.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: It was good enough.
- 1:04:35Speaker 5: My knowledge of boxing, Isaac, is always tied to organized crime.
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: So I'm just like, okay, this is rigged. There's a
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: lot of people with their money in this match, et cetera,
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: et cetera.
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: Not that we know that that happens. That's where my
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: mind goes.
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I think he just meant more like you got
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: to pick it up because that's where he is.
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: You were saying knowledge of boxing movies. I guess I
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: also wanted to address that because I feel like now
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: it is, I mean, it literally is a sub genre
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: in this point. Like we may, and I'm surprised, like
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: sports movies are kind of hit and miss like every
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: couple of years, something will show up. But boxing movies
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: are like nonstop, like to the point, like at least
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: every year, sometimes a couple in the same year will
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: come out. So I'm like, obviously, you know, people respond
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: to them, but, I also feel like there's become sort
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: of an art form to being able to shoot a
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: good boxing movie. And this was so early on, I
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: don't even feel like it's shot like that. Like, it
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: is not at all shot the way that you would
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: shoot a boxing movie now.
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: It's all about the lighting now.
- 1:05:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: Like, the lighting of the matches.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: And, like, it changes. Like, it will want to be, again,
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: it's probably just more of our, like, wanting to be
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: more artsy and like being taken seriously as a film
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: where like they will get up close and personal will
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: be like cutting to different shots with each punch and
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: like that kind of stuff where this I felt like
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: was way more staged literally like the camera's pretty far
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: back a good portion of like we will almost sometimes
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: get the entire ring in there for a lot of
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: the a lot of the going back and forth and
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: i'm like where now i feel like it's a lot
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: more cutting it's a lot more close-ups it's a lot
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: more you know reaction shot to this and like it
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: will just cut back and forth and try to tell
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: the story with the way that it's cut together where
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: this was just again in the real world it was
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: probably really hard to choreograph this fight to the point
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: that they said like it went so badly during that
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: first rehearsal they they like the director told stallone go
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: home and write the scene blow for blow write exactly
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: what you want to happen because our like trying to
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: wing it isn't working so like i feel like there
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: is a little maybe that coming through that it's like
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: it looks good like they did rehearse it non-stop pretty
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: well and yeah i think it's still a good fight
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: scene but i feel like It is one of those,
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: I feel like they were almost more of like, okay,
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: just sit the camera over here because we got a
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: lot of other stuff to do. We don't really have
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: time to deal with shooting. We'll do some cool angles
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: later on the steps. But I feel like once they
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: got to that final fight, they were like, we got
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: to make sure we get the fight in and get
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: it right and get everything laid out and framed and
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: everything else together. So I feel like it's not super
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: experimental in that part. It's just, it does a good
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: job and they staged a good fight. It still does
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: hold up.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: But it's very different than I feel like fight scenes
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: are now when you cut it together.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: Definitely.
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: I think they didn't care as much about the fight
- 1:07:28Speaker 5: in the beginning. I'm thinking about that. And one of
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: the first things that I said out loud watching the
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: film was like, this is worse than pro wrestling. Watching
- 1:07:37Speaker 5: the blows and nothing happened. It's kind of like pulling
- 1:07:42Speaker 5: the punches.
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: I was like, oh, this is bad.
- 1:07:43Speaker 5: But then the end fight, I was like, okay, this
- 1:07:45Speaker 5: is not nearly as bad as that first fight.
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: I get you. I get what you're saying for sure.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: So I don't know, I feel like that's definitely changed.
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: I guess now you're more exposed to more fight movies
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: that are made now. I don't know, did you have
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: a response because it's not like most fight movies are now?
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: Yeah, because of how little fighting there was, for sure.
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: Again, that's almost maybe more pop-culturally. You would almost expect
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: it to be like a boxing movie, where once you
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: get back there, like we said, it's... Not really. It's
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: third on the list of things they're trying to do here.
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: And in Rocky, all of the inspirational stuff and the
- 1:08:27Speaker 5: motivational stuff is really understated. Whereas a lot of boxing
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: movies now, they're like, look at this person so conflicted.
- 1:08:35Speaker 5: And then they find their meaning and they work really
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: hard for it. And then you're swelling with emotion and
- 1:08:41Speaker 5: you've got adrenaline during the boxing matches and stuff. But
- 1:08:45Speaker 5: Rocky doesn't do that so much.
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: I think you get that from Rocky, but you don't
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: get it from the fighting. I think you get it
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: more from, like, the Adrian relationship. Because that stuff, I
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: am like, when you see both of them kind of, like,
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: getting better. Like, they're both... so awkward and like you
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: just within the first time or two that they're together
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: she all of a sudden kind of becomes a real
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: person and she's like now she's not dressing like she
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: did she has a little more confidence in herself and
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: she's just like oh i can be myself and then
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: a few scenes later she's telling off her brother which
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: she should have done a decade ago you know it's
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: like I think I get more of the inspirational aspect
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: is just more of, again, I think that's more this
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: time around, watching that fighting against this loser thing that
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: they're all saddled with. I find all that way more
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: inspirational is that you do see them. all just wanting
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: to be better people.
- 1:09:37Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: And you're like, you're.
- 1:09:39Speaker 5: Drawing the inspiration from the characters and not like the
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: inspiration being like forced down your throat. Again, it's not
- 1:09:45Speaker 5: the swelling music so much and all that.
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: For somebody who I guess hadn't written a ton at
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: that point. Like, I feel like it's a pretty well scripted,
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: like to be as like, you would expect again, being the,
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: the brute that he is, you would expect him to
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: not be a subtle writer either.
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: Most of these scenes are like, just again, it always
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: takes a turn. I don't expect it to. And it's
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: way like, it feels like it could very easily have
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: given to a lesser writer, just hit you over the
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: head with everything again. And I think it.
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: Kind of like ties into maybe why the fight was
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: kind of good for its time and kind of holds
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: up and maybe has made things better is cause like,
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: I remember hearing that, like they got a guy to
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: do the fight choreography who I guess had done it
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: for all the boxing movies up to them. That was
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: like his big thing. And he like, you know, he
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: had this very like standard style. He's like, all right,
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: you throw two lefts and a right. And then he,
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: this guy does this. And I guess Stallone was like, well,
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: I want a Creed to come out and he throws
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: like three rights right away. And the guy's like, no
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: fighter would ever do that. He's like, well, this guy would.
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: And I think, I guess, I think it's made it
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: where like, I think that fights so good. Cause even
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: though it's an old thing, it holds up. Cause it's like,
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: So it tells the whole fight is like its own
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: separate little mini film.
- 1:11:02Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: It's really about telling a story more than it is
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: about like winning or losing. And that's why I think
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: like the best moment in the fight is when he
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: knocks him down in the 14th round. And then he's like,
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: like Apollo's like, well, clearly I've won. This is over now.
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: And then he gets up and kind of motions like,
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: come on, let's keep fighting. And then he just like
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: looks at the ground, just like, are you, kidding me
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: like this is insane like that just i feel like
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: that's like literally three pages of dialogue in like just
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: 10 seconds of just body language.
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: I think that stuff is what comes through and again
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: i feel like it was them sort of creating that
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: like i don't i don't maybe i just don't remember
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: a ton of fighting movies before that yeah but like
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: i feel like this is where because it becomes a
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: thing that happens as as the series goes on but
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: you definitely see the roots of it right here Where
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: you get so much personality in the ring.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: And you get, like, again, where it could just be
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: a standard back and forth. Like, even when you watch
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: regular boxing, when you're watching it on HBO, it's pretty boring. Like,
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: compared to when you insert a story into it.
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: And you start to see, like, now they just beat
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: the hell out of each other and it's bloody half
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: the time. But, like, when you're watching, like, little characteristics
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: come out and you see, like... Again, to me, I
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: think the best moment is... in the beginning when you
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: see Apollo come out and he's just cocky as hell
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: and he's just dancing around and they're both just kind
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: of not hitting each other and the uppercut that catches
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: him off guard. And the only time he's ever been
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: knocked down on the road, like to me, that was like,
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: Oh shit, I don't think I remembered that part. And
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: I was like, that's kind of cool because you do
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: get this, like, again, it's that, that like concentrated version
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: of this whole story. It's like Apollo not paying attention,
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: being kind of lazy, just worrying about the publicity and,
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: And Rocky being, like, fucking hungry. And it's just like,
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: this is my shot. I'm fighting a real fight here.
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: You're just dancing around, and you don't see this coming.
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: And he literally just knocks him on his ass. And, like,
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: that's kind of my favorite part. Like, again, that last
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: two rounds is awesome, too. But, like, I think that
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: was kind of cool because I didn't really remember that
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: he just kind of, like, the first real shot he
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: gets in, he just knocks him down. And it's something that,
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: you know, Apollo does not know how to deal with.
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: And then from that point, you do start to see
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: those little personality. Like you see Apollo still being kind
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: of cocky as the fight goes on. You see Rocky
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: being like, I don't care. I'm going the distance. You
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: can't get me to stay down. No matter how bad
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: you beat me, no matter how bad they have to
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: cut my eye so I can see you. That's the thing.
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: I'm like, I know the line, but it's like, I
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: don't remember seeing it recently. So watching, they did a good,
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: actually I saw that when I was reading stuff today
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: that the biggest thing that they spent money on in
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: this movie was the.
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: Makeup yeah and it looks really good and i'm like that's.
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: That's weird because it's not like it's a crazy sci-fi
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: makeup effects movie but just to make his face look
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: that messed up they spent more money than anything else
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: in the movie i'm like that's impressive actually because it
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: doesn't look bad like it really does look like again
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: you watch an hbo boxing those dude gets their face
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: pummeled and it looks that terrible and it Looks pretty close.
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: So watching him slice that open, that was pretty damn fun.
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: And I like that Apollo's weak point ended up being, like,
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: his ribs.
- 1:14:14Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: Because he was, like, beaten on, like, the slabs of meat, like,
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: right on the ribs there.
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: I was like, yes.
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: Well, and it's, again, it's showing, like, this weird little
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: undercurrent of story of, like, you would expect it to
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: be the big flashy, like, you know, knock him in
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: the face and knock him out.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: But, like.
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: again if you if you watch boxing enough you realize
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: it's not necessarily it it really is like a stamina
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: thing and if you can find somewhere that they're weak
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: and just work it like you can wear them down
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: to the point that you can kick their ass but
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: they don't see it coming because it's not a big
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: showy thing it's learning how to kind of pace yourself
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: and figuring out where their weak spots are it is
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: a science as they refer to it it is amazing
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: as brutal as it fucking is it is a an
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: interesting sport to watch because it really is about, like,
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: learning the craft and almost doing your homework and, like,
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: it's way more thinking than you would expect out of
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: just the most barbaric thing in the world beating each
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: other in the face. So... Yeah, I have some weird
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: offshoot things I wanted to throw out there.
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: I came up with a secondary movie that I am
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: so entertained with and I hope other people enjoy this because...
- 1:15:28Speaker 3: midway in i kind of forgot about the turtles so
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: watching oh yeah cuff and wing watching watching him like
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: deal with these turtles and then he keeps referring to
- 1:15:38Speaker 3: the fact that they sing and dance so i immediately
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: spiraled into this michigan jay frog movie of rocky being
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: thoroughly convinced these turtles sing and dance And taking them
- 1:15:49Speaker 3: around to everybody in town going, no, really, watch him.
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: And then they just sit there and then they kick
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: him out. And he's like, and then of course later
- 1:15:56Speaker 3: they do, but nobody, he'll never get anybody to believe him.
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: I loved making up my own movie of this just
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: Rocky being insane.
- 1:16:05Speaker 4: That's not bad.
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: Thoroughly convinced that these turtles will sing and dance.
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: And there's a fish too, right?
- 1:16:10Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: He has a little goldfish.
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: But he never said he was going to sing and dance.
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:16:15Speaker 3: Several times butt kiss yeah which was his real dog
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: yeah that he was trying to give away yeah he
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: actually had to sell him because he ran out of
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: money yeah he couldn't feed.
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: Him back when they got the.
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: Script bought there's a lot of sad stuff yeah i
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: mean it like well starting like at birth like again
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: as much fun as people have made of him over
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: the years for his talking like you heard that story
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: like it was years like i thought maybe he just
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: talked like that it was like maybe the early two
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: thousands before I first heard that story and went, Oh shit.
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: In the forties when they pulled kids out, they didn't
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: really know what the hell they were doing. And this doctor,
- 1:16:53Speaker 3: whatever ghetto town they were in, use the forceps wrong
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: and severed nerves in his face. And that is why
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: he talks like that. And he has that kind of
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: weird little, little slur to his lip.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: It's a real medical reason that, you know, from day
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: one in this world, he was just sort of put
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: up on and like, yeah, the years of him, like,
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: you know, literally I have to go make a porn
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: because I'm starving to death. Like he literally was like,
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: I either I'm going to go rob people or make
- 1:17:24Speaker 3: this terrible movie that I do not want to have
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: to do, but I want to be an actor. This
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: is what, I mean, again, he takes so much shit
- 1:17:31Speaker 3: now for being the super successful, like hacky actor that
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: he's supposed to be. But I'm like his life, like
- 1:17:39Speaker 3: it is a hell of a story. From day one.
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: From day one. Like, shit went wrong. And it wasn't
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: until he was 30 before he ever caught a break.
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: Like, it's... Yeah.
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: So, I don't know. That's just one of those kind
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: of looking back at, like, his life as a whole
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: is pretty damn interesting. And completely mirrors Rocky's story as well.
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: And I like how much, like, real stuff. Like, the
- 1:18:02Speaker 5: little injury on his finger. Like, that's a real thing.
- 1:18:04Speaker 3: That's his real dog.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: He's really like 29 and trying to make it.
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: He's really 29 and.
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: Starving to death.
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:18:11Speaker 3: He really had a crappy apartment just like that, I'm sure.
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: If that. He was homeless for a while. So yeah,
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: it's like he had a rough damn life.
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: For sure.
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: The other, I was trying to think the other weird
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: offshoot things. What the hell is that painting in Adrian's place?
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: It looks like it might be black velvet paint. And
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: the girl's skin is green. And it's like, go back.
- 1:18:36Speaker 5: No, I'm never going to go back and look at that.
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: Like, it's disturbing. But at the same time, I'm like,
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: I'd probably have that in my house. It's weird enough.
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: I'm like, I'd probably hang that up. Even without the
- 1:18:48Speaker 3: Rocky tie.
- 1:18:48Speaker 5: He just has Halloween decorations for decorations all year round.
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: That's my life. So yeah, I just was like, what
- 1:18:55Speaker 3: the hell is that? Because it's like their house is
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: so like, It is old lady-esque. To be the fact
- 1:19:02Speaker 3: that it's just the two of them, as far as
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: we know, there is no mom within the story that
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: we see. So the fact that they still have the
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: silver sitting on the table there, and I'm like, everything
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: about it seems like it's like an 80-year-old woman lives there,
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: but yet Polly lives there. Like, it doesn't fit either
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: of them. Definitely not Polly. So, yeah, the interior decorating
- 1:19:23Speaker 3: was very strange and all of that, and I'm obsessed
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: with that weird paint.
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: So I don't know.
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: Are there other big elements we need to hit?
- 1:19:32Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: I feel like we hit all the big things.
- 1:19:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: Probably.
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: How do you feel? Do you feel good about this?
- 1:19:39Speaker 3: Are you... To this day, I still get to that
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: scene and I'm like, do you want to drink some eggs?
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: I never have. I do want to try it. It's
- 1:19:47Speaker 4: on my bucket list.
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: I think because of that, I tested it out as
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: a kid. Did you do it?
- 1:19:54Speaker 8: Barf?
- 1:19:54Speaker 3: No, it was just like, I don't think I got
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: past the texture like... Maybe I'll, oh God, no. Like,
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: I don't think it even got into the point of tasting.
- 1:20:03Speaker 3: It was just the texture.
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: I think you just got to swallow it in one gulp.
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: I think you're supposed to, which is, yeah. I don't
- 1:20:08Speaker 3: think you're supposed to get to the point of going,
- 1:20:10Speaker 3: is this okay? You're supposed to down it.
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like taking a shot.
- 1:20:13Speaker 3: You just let it go.
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: Can't smell it.
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I skipped that step. I got just far enough
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: in to go, oh, this is a bad idea.
- 1:20:18Speaker 6: No.
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: Not to mention now I'm like, oh, salmonella. What are
- 1:20:23Speaker 3: you thinking, Rock? Come on. It's super good.
- 1:20:25Speaker 5: It's not that hard to eat. eggs like why don't
- 1:20:28Speaker 5: you just cook.
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: Them you had a stove I think I mean that
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: I mean I feel like yeah now you would just
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: eat the eggs or something like that has been replaced
- 1:20:36Speaker 4: just with like I mean if you just need the
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: protein just take protein powder like you don't need to
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: do straight.
- 1:20:42Speaker 5: Eggs and why would you like eat all that or
- 1:20:44Speaker 5: drink it I guess right before you go on a
- 1:20:46Speaker 5: run you're gonna get those split sides that he got
- 1:20:49Speaker 5: he's like limping up the stairs I'm like that's cause
- 1:20:51Speaker 5: you drank the eggs you dummy and.
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: You're probably nauseous at this point I do want to
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: address the song, because I don't think I realize just
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: how freaking on the nose those lyrics are. Like, it
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: is not subtle there, let me tell you.
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: Oh, gonna fly next?
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: Yeah, but I mean, like, in the beginning, like, every, like,
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: it's literally describing the things he's doing in the beginning. Like,
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: by the end, at least, the gonna fly is more, like,
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: inspirational and spiritual-ish, but, like, the beginning's just, like.
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: Flying hard now.
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: It's so hard now, trying hard now. Feeling strong now,
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: I'm in awe now.
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, you're right. That's what he's doing. It's a
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: little more cheesy than I remembered. Yeah, I was like,
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: I guess by the end it all works and the
- 1:22:09Speaker 3: scene is shot so awesome and they created a rig
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: around that, which I didn't know this was more or
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: less where that like... that attachment that you would put
- 1:22:19Speaker 3: on you to kind of deal with the motion.
- 1:22:21Speaker 4: Oh, the study cam?
- 1:22:22Speaker 3: Yeah, the study cam.
- 1:22:23Speaker 4: Yeah, that was like the first movie they used it in.
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: It was like just a regular thing.
- 1:22:27Speaker 3: The original run, I think the guy who put it
- 1:22:29Speaker 3: together was going to try to sell it in LA
- 1:22:31Speaker 3: and he had his girlfriend run up the stairs and
- 1:22:34Speaker 3: shot coverage of that. And then our director saw it
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: and was like, be pretty cool on rocky so he
- 1:22:40Speaker 3: like recreates the thing he did a few months before
- 1:22:42Speaker 3: with his girlfriend with sylvester stallone i'm like that's interesting
- 1:22:46Speaker 3: i don't think i'd heard that story before i don't
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: think i realized that was the birthplace of to bring.
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: It all full circle at the end here i feel
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: like my favorite song story is that so erwin winkler
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: i believe is who did the music for most of
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: the films and he pitched rocky the song he pitched
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: him a couple songs for rocky three one of which
- 1:23:07Speaker 4: was Eye of the Tiger, but one of which, which
- 1:23:10Speaker 4: was almost the go, was You're the Best Around. And
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: Rocky was like, no, we're going to go with Survivor,
- 1:23:16Speaker 4: we're going to go with Eye of the Tiger. Erwin
- 1:23:18Speaker 4: Winkler then, years later, works on the music for The
- 1:23:21Speaker 4: Karate Kid and goes, you know, I have this awesome
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: song that's kind of inspirational related to sports if you
- 1:23:26Speaker 4: want to use it. And it was You're the Best Around,
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: which is now kind of famous for that movie.
- 1:23:31Speaker 3: I'm a sucker for Burning Heart myself. That's a great one, too.
- 1:23:35Speaker 4: Anything by survivor is great.
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: I yeah i can't argue that either version of survivor
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: sort of becomes a different band in between those two
- 1:23:42Speaker 3: movies yeah again both.
- 1:23:44Speaker 5: Of those songs probably coke fueled.
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: Well that that lead singer's not around anymore so i
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: don't know that that anything to do with it but
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: rest in peace that dude from burning heart because he
- 1:23:57Speaker 3: was awesome um To bring it full circle, we didn't
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: mention that this is the man who brought his Karate Kid,
- 1:24:04Speaker 3: as you said earlier. So it is like you do
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: see him sort of hitting this, even mimicking his own
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: movie later. This sort of a sports movie, but kind
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: of an unconventional sport. And this very solo guy on
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: his own little path trying to... trying to prove himself
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: more than anything, again, more than even winning the, you know,
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: the competition in Karate Kid. It's about, you know, him,
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: you know, he's a picked on kid. So it's like,
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: I want to have some sort of, you know, inner
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: strength and I want to be, you know, proud of
- 1:24:37Speaker 3: who I am. And like, he learns that stuff, you know,
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: and I guess Miyagi becomes our Mickey and like it.
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: So he does start to like, you start to already
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: see a, a, sort of a cookie cutter version of
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: this that then I feel like gets beat to death.
- 1:24:51Speaker 3: By the end of the eighties, we've already seen so
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: many sports movies kind of steal this, this little blueprint
- 1:24:57Speaker 3: and just use it over and over to the point
- 1:25:00Speaker 3: now that it's kind of hard to not do one
- 1:25:01Speaker 3: of those. Like when I see a boxing movie, I'm like,
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: how are you going to go about not pulling from
- 1:25:07Speaker 3: Rocky stuff? You know, especially because there's so many that like,
- 1:25:11Speaker 3: you have all those different points in the career that like,
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: it's really hard to not hit a note that Rocky's
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: already done in some version, in some movie over the years.
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: So I guess that's points to, yeah, Creed for coming along.
- 1:25:24Speaker 3: And I don't feel like it totally retreads what's going
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: on in this first movie.
- 1:25:28Speaker 4: Does a good job of, you know, tells its own story,
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: telling its own story, touching back enough.
- 1:25:33Speaker 3: It mirrors it a little and, and rock becomes the
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: Mickey too, but like it, it definitely kind of has
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: its own take on it. So it's, Yeah, so I
- 1:25:42Speaker 3: think that's full circle is they made another version of
- 1:25:45Speaker 3: it and worked Rocky the character.
- 1:25:47Speaker 4: Back into it.
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: And he was robbed for the Oscar. Really? That would
- 1:25:52Speaker 3: have been a nice.
- 1:25:53Speaker 4: He got the Golden Globes.
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: That would have been a nice full circle, though, to
- 1:25:56Speaker 3: have won the Oscar the first time around and then
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: come back in as that character. So yeah, Oscars, you're
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: screwing things up. As per usual, we say.
- 1:26:07Speaker 14: All right.
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: That was good. I feel good. Do you guys feel good?
- 1:26:10Speaker 3: I feel like we've I feel fine. We've covered Rocky.
- 1:26:13Speaker 5: I don't feel sick.
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: Does it make you want to go watch the other
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: ones now? Because I kind of feel like you need to.
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: That is the big question.
- 1:26:20Speaker 5: I don't feel compelled, but I am not against it.
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: Because I feel like we just talked about it.
- 1:26:28Speaker 6: That's true.
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: I'm like, well, now I know the gist.
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: All right, cool.
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: But I feel like, yeah. Again, I feel like two
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: just kind of drags the story on a little further.
- 1:26:35Speaker 3: And we get to see a little more come out
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: of it. But three takes that turn. And I feel
- 1:26:39Speaker 3: like you do get a very different dynamic by the
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: time you hit the third one. And then it gets
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: silly for a couple of movies. But then you can
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: come back around towards the end.
- 1:26:46Speaker 5: I'd be down to watch The Rush. I mean, that one...
- 1:26:49Speaker 5: As far as I've heard, it's more of the cult
- 1:26:51Speaker 5: classic one. Everyone talks about the fourth one.
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: You should definitely just at least jump around the series.
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: Yeah. Again, even when they're at their cheesiest, they're more
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: entertaining than a lot of movies out there. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: It's a fun series.
- 1:27:03Speaker 5: I'll end up watching them.
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: It's worth a spin. Give four a spin.
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: For sure. I say three, too. You get to see Mr.
- 1:27:09Speaker 3: T being a badass. Before he was the jokey Mr. T,
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: he was Clubber Lang.
- 1:27:16Speaker 5: I like to watch things in order.
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: I think it's worth doing.
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: Very orderly.
- 1:27:20Speaker 5: You didn't know that about me.
- 1:27:22Speaker 12: Not at all.
- 1:27:23Speaker 14: No.
- 1:27:24Speaker 12: Not at all.
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: Pure chaos.
- 1:27:27Speaker 14: So, yeah.
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: Otherwise, go watch the rest of the series. For anyone
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: out there who hasn't seen it, but for some reason
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: joined us on this little journey and watched the first one,
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: I guess continue on and let us know what you think.
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: Nice.
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: All right. Well, what do you have to tell people
- 1:27:45Speaker 3: as far as if they want to keep up with
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: you or what you've got in the works?
- 1:27:50Speaker 4: I always list shows and just general content, like, you know,
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: just general updates at Justin Golak dot com. g-o-l-a-k and
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: then um uh i'm part of like a content site
- 1:28:04Speaker 4: i got like a couple podcasts one that i host
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: when i co-host and i got high podcasts everyone's got
- 1:28:09Speaker 4: one uh and then a couple albums like stand-up albums
- 1:28:14Speaker 4: and one has like a video version like i recorded
- 1:28:17Speaker 4: and uh there's a bunch of other stuff like that
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: uh lowclass.com it's l-o-class.com so You can find anything I've
- 1:28:25Speaker 4: ever done there, and it's all for free. So check
- 1:28:28Speaker 4: it out, and if you like it, go to the
- 1:28:29Speaker 4: other site and find out where I'll be. Hopefully near
- 1:28:32Speaker 4: you sometime.
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: Cool.
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: Sounds good. Well, otherwise, we want to say thank you
- 1:28:37Speaker 3: to Gallery K for letting us bust in and take
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: this place home. I've claimed this area as the Meltdown
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: Recording Studio, so whether they like it or not, I
- 1:28:45Speaker 3: told Will, I'm like, and we'll come back and do
