- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jim Hayes alongside Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn. And you
- 0:14Speaker 1: know what, if you like the Cardinal Territory program and
- 0:18Speaker 1: you haven't subscribed, we always start with a pitch, go
- 0:21Speaker 1: ahead and subscribe. We've been trying to get to seven thousand,
- 0:24Speaker 1: slow and steady progress. You know, it's a marathon, not
- 0:28Speaker 1: a sprint. But if you know someone that likes the
- 0:30Speaker 1: podcast or likes Cardinal Baseball, tell them about Cardinal Territory
- 0:35Speaker 1: and let's get to seven k.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Gentlemen.
- 0:40Speaker 1: The Cardinals just came off sweeping four games from the
- 0:44Speaker 1: Pirates in Pittsburgh, then taking two of three from the
- 0:49Speaker 1: Dodgers and looking pretty good doing it. Lance I want
- 0:53Speaker 1: to start with you, what the heck's going on with
- 0:56Speaker 1: this Cardinal rebuild.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Young kids are enjoying the feeling of winning, right, that's
- 1:03Speaker 3: what you what you hope to happen. I think the
- 1:05Speaker 3: beauty of all this is they got off to a
- 1:08Speaker 3: pretty good start. They got the right people in the
- 1:10Speaker 3: right spots to not only learn on the job, but
- 1:14Speaker 3: also are are talented enough to make adjustments and keep
- 1:19Speaker 3: doing it day in and day out. So I think
- 1:21Speaker 3: when they put this roster together, they put together a
- 1:24Speaker 3: group that can kind of mix and match where they
- 1:26Speaker 3: need to. They're not afraid of, you know, doing the
- 1:30Speaker 3: things they need to do, whether it's putting the ball
- 1:33Speaker 3: in play, you know, playing good defense, stuff like that.
- 1:36Speaker 3: So if you make some pitches and you play some
- 1:38Speaker 3: defense and have some timely hitting, who knows what can happen.
- 1:41Speaker 3: And you know, they're kind of all feeding off of
- 1:43Speaker 3: each other. And that's what happens when you have a
- 1:45Speaker 3: young lineup that knows they're gonna get opportunities. They're kind
- 1:48Speaker 3: of playing free and that's fun to watch. And you
- 1:52Speaker 3: when you start feeling yourself we all know in the
- 1:55Speaker 3: game of baseball, when you start feeling yourself a little bit,
- 1:57Speaker 3: weird things happen. You start winning games and you can
- 2:00Speaker 3: start rolling. So I love a little stretch after getting
- 2:03Speaker 3: swept at home too. So it's a you know, they're
- 2:05Speaker 3: not going to sit there and lick their wounds and uh,
- 2:08Speaker 3: you know, you know, bewoe with me.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I suck.
- 2:11Speaker 3: They turned around and flipped the script and went swept
- 2:13Speaker 3: the team on the road and came back and beat
- 2:15Speaker 3: you know, the raigning champs in a series. So that's
- 2:18Speaker 3: the that's the fun part, right, It's like, hey, we
- 2:20Speaker 3: didn't let it snowball, we flipped it and we got
- 2:22Speaker 3: right back to work and you know, series happened, going
- 2:25Speaker 3: to the next one, figure.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Out how to win it or or you know, whatever
- 2:29Speaker 4: it may be. And they're doing that. So that's fun.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Yeah. And and the way, as Lance points out, they're
- 2:35Speaker 1: doing it, they're winning in different ways, Kyle, They're getting
- 2:38Speaker 1: contributions different parts of the lineup. What stands out to
- 2:42Speaker 1: you about what they've been able to do to this point?
- 2:46Speaker 5: That four games sweep is impressive. Sweeping four games from anybody.
- 2:50Speaker 5: It's tough doing it on the road in Pittsburgh against
- 2:54Speaker 5: the divisional opponent. Pittsburgh had been playing really well also,
- 2:58Speaker 5: so that's you know, that's an off in Pittsburgh that
- 3:01Speaker 5: you look up and down that lineup, you know that's
- 3:03Speaker 5: not going to be an easy lineup to keep down.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Sometimes they slug and sometimes they threw the ball really well.
- 3:08Speaker 5: So I think that one is really impressive. I'd be
- 3:12Speaker 5: interested to hear if Lance thinks the four games in
- 3:15Speaker 5: Pittsburgh or the series win against La is more impressive.
- 3:18Speaker 5: But both of them, you know, really show a good
- 3:24Speaker 5: streak of six games where they're playing really good baseball
- 3:27Speaker 5: and doing what they need to to win.
- 3:29Speaker 2: You know, sure, I don't.
- 3:31Speaker 5: I'm not going to buy into you know, this is
- 3:36Speaker 5: the team or ahead of schedule, rebuild behind schedule, and
- 3:39Speaker 5: rebuild if they struggle for a week here and there. Jim,
- 3:42Speaker 5: I'm gonna avoid every question you have to ask when
- 3:44Speaker 5: it comes to that, because I think this whole time
- 3:47Speaker 5: we've Lance and I and Jim, I think you have
- 3:49Speaker 5: as well agreed that this is this is a talented
- 3:52Speaker 5: team that has a chance of surprise some people.
- 3:55Speaker 2: And I think they're surprising some people with how good
- 3:57Speaker 2: at baseball they're playing.
- 3:58Speaker 1: To this point, Lan's which which is better the sweep
- 4:02Speaker 1: in Pittsburgh. Look, I think the Pirates are kind of
- 4:05Speaker 1: an incomplete team with a lineup you can't pitch too.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I didn't taken two or three from the Dodgers is
- 4:11Speaker 1: more impressive, even though the Dodgers haven't been playing great baseball.
- 4:15Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on Kyle's question?
- 4:18Speaker 3: It's definitely Pittsburgh. You face the back half of the
- 4:22Speaker 3: rotation for the Dodgers at home, and you got swept
- 4:25Speaker 3: before you went to Pittsburgh. So win four in a
- 4:27Speaker 3: row and another team's ballpark and you face schemes during
- 4:30Speaker 3: that stretch, So that's definitely more impressive than the two
- 4:34Speaker 3: or three of the Dodgers. Dodgers haven't been playing well
- 4:36Speaker 3: and you didn't face any of their their top dogs
- 4:39Speaker 3: on the on the mound. So you did what you
- 4:40Speaker 3: were supposed to do against the Dodgers. You did what
- 4:44Speaker 3: no one expected you to do in Pittsburgh, especially after
- 4:47Speaker 3: getting swept in the series before they left at home.
- 4:52Speaker 3: So I would say Pittsburgh for sure, I sink correct.
- 4:56Speaker 2: What do you think? Which one do you think in better? Jim?
- 4:58Speaker 3: You think the Dodgers is more beast. He's like every
- 5:00Speaker 3: other media person. If you beat the Dodgers, you beat
- 5:03Speaker 3: the world. You know, you slayed the giant. It's it's made.
- 5:07Speaker 3: You beat the Dodgers and they didn't.
- 5:08Speaker 1: You didn't.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Fay show a snow U Yamamoto like, good job, you
- 5:14Speaker 3: did what you should have done at home. You you
- 5:16Speaker 3: beat There's two guys that started games. No one's ever
- 5:19Speaker 3: heard of us, Like, come.
- 5:19Speaker 1: On now, no I understand a lesson. I wasn't popping
- 5:23Speaker 1: champagne courts over it. I just think the Pirates are
- 5:26Speaker 1: a team that, as the season goes on, will fall
- 5:29Speaker 1: back a little bit. That's all I'm saying.
- 5:32Speaker 4: But the ways the four game sweep and schemes, okay,
- 5:37Speaker 4: and they owned skin thanks.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Look, I understand they own skiings for some reason.
- 5:41Speaker 2: They do.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Career, that's true.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I think the most surprising thing about what I've seen
- 5:51Speaker 1: that I didn't see coming is that the Cardinals are
- 5:54Speaker 1: like tied for fourth in home runs. They've had a
- 5:58Speaker 1: lot of pop and now part of that is Jordan
- 6:01Speaker 1: Walker getting off to the crazy good start. I get it.
- 6:05Speaker 1: But are you surprised that they've shown so much pup
- 6:08Speaker 1: because he's not the only guy. They're getting a lot
- 6:11Speaker 1: of Kyle of They got a lot of guys that
- 6:13Speaker 1: are showing off some power.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I think power in general, you know,
- 6:22Speaker 5: normally in Bush Stadium, I feel like it would probably
- 6:24Speaker 5: that higher slug would come from the doubles, where in
- 6:28Speaker 5: the past, I think you've had guys like Burley and
- 6:30Speaker 5: Donovan really hit on.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Doubles new Born as well.
- 6:34Speaker 5: I don't know that people around baseball would have seen
- 6:38Speaker 5: the home run searche coming. But I think that comes
- 6:41Speaker 5: from a guy like Walker going out there and swinging
- 6:44Speaker 5: the bat really well and seeing his adjustments, you know,
- 6:47Speaker 5: play well.
- 6:48Speaker 2: A guy like weather Holt.
- 6:49Speaker 5: Coming in and hitting more homers than people think then
- 6:53Speaker 5: he then then they think.
- 6:55Speaker 2: He was going to hit.
- 6:56Speaker 5: Easy for me to say, I mean, I think people
- 6:59Speaker 5: thought he was from what I heard, he might be
- 7:01Speaker 5: a twenty homer guy, but I mean he's on pace
- 7:04Speaker 5: for a lot more than that, so you know, and
- 7:06Speaker 5: I think Burly and and Herrera and those guys are
- 7:09Speaker 5: going to have, you know, their homers as well, but
- 7:12Speaker 5: you know, Walker and Weather won't really have I feel
- 7:14Speaker 5: like surprising people with their powers when it goes to
- 7:17Speaker 5: the ball and the ballpark.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Will they come down to earth Lance or do you
- 7:21Speaker 1: think we're going to see the Cardinals be a team
- 7:24Speaker 1: with maybe a little bit more pop than people thought.
- 7:28Speaker 3: I mean, I think you're looking at even if you
- 7:30Speaker 3: looked at him at the beginning of the year, you're
- 7:31Speaker 3: hoping they'd be in the middle of the pack. I
- 7:34Speaker 3: think the early surge by Walker, the warmer weather to
- 7:38Speaker 3: start the year for him in Saint Louis with some
- 7:41Speaker 3: balls kind of flying out might be. They might be
- 7:44Speaker 3: a little bit spiked right now. But if if you
- 7:47Speaker 3: look up at the end of the year and they're
- 7:48Speaker 3: in the top ten, that's a really good year. And
- 7:51Speaker 3: I think there's guys coming that are going to help
- 7:53Speaker 3: them stay in the top ten. So if you look
- 7:56Speaker 3: at this group, the youth, the ability to get on
- 8:00Speaker 3: base in certain ways and drive the ball, this is
- 8:02Speaker 3: going to be a fun, fun group to watch develop.
- 8:05Speaker 3: But I mean, Gorman's could be a thirty home run guy.
- 8:09Speaker 3: You know, you got other guys that are twenty home
- 8:11Speaker 3: run guys already. So I think that you're looking at
- 8:14Speaker 3: a team that can be within the you know, in
- 8:17Speaker 3: the top fifteen in the league. And if they get
- 8:20Speaker 3: to where the end of the year in the top ten,
- 8:22Speaker 3: I think that's a really good year for and everyone
- 8:24Speaker 3: will be very, very pleased with everything that's going on
- 8:28Speaker 3: for them. And I think they've got guys that haven't
- 8:31Speaker 3: found their home run stroke yet and or you know,
- 8:33Speaker 3: I think when Lars gets back, he's a guy that's
- 8:35Speaker 3: gonna help them with some home run balls in the
- 8:37Speaker 3: second half too, So I can see them. You know,
- 8:41Speaker 3: you look up at the end of the year and
- 8:42Speaker 3: they're in the top top ten to twelve. I don't
- 8:45Speaker 3: think they're going to stay in the top five.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Okay, ten, it would be great.
- 8:49Speaker 5: And Herrera now stands they've got yeah, I mean, Herrera's
- 8:55Speaker 5: got four. You know, I see him as a twenty
- 8:58Speaker 5: homer guy probably, and then Gorman is church of twenty
- 9:02Speaker 5: five homer guy.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know that I know enough
- 9:04Speaker 2: about him to say that he is.
- 9:07Speaker 5: But Burley, Weather, Holden Walker are all trending for twenty
- 9:10Speaker 5: five plus. I mean, I think you're looking at a
- 9:13Speaker 5: team with one hundred and fifteen to one hundred and
- 9:15Speaker 5: thirty homers, and that's that's pretty good. You know, that'll
- 9:18Speaker 5: get you in the middle of the pack to the
- 9:19Speaker 5: to the top fifteen for sure.
- 9:22Speaker 1: So this next question, you guys will probably slap me
- 9:25Speaker 1: around for even asking.
- 9:26Speaker 4: It, but I look a percent, I hope.
- 9:29Speaker 1: So you know, the Cardinals didn't have a home run celebration.
- 9:33Speaker 1: You guys are pitchers, so you probably hate that crap anyway,
- 9:37Speaker 1: But now they have one because for me went online
- 9:40Speaker 1: and got this chain that says I got a dog
- 9:44Speaker 1: in me and they put that on whoever it's a
- 9:46Speaker 1: homer and now they have a celebration. Do you guys
- 9:49Speaker 1: like that or do you not like that? I'll start
- 9:51Speaker 1: with you Lance, and hopefully this is where we get
- 9:54Speaker 1: his first curse Wark.
- 9:55Speaker 3: No, this is a this is a Kyle question one percent.
- 9:58Speaker 3: I mean I remember him. He was poor and he
- 10:00Speaker 3: was pouring water bombs in Baltimore years ago, so he
- 10:03Speaker 3: loves he loves the home run celebration. So I was
- 10:09Speaker 3: I'm all for like for me, if I strike you out,
- 10:12Speaker 3: I'm gonna do whatever it is that I did back
- 10:15Speaker 3: in the day. And then if you hit home run
- 10:17Speaker 3: off me, you can flip your bat and you can
- 10:19Speaker 3: go to the dugout, pop your chain and wear your hat.
- 10:21Speaker 4: I don't really care, So I'm for it. I think everybody.
- 10:25Speaker 3: It's just it's no different than having walk up songs
- 10:28Speaker 3: and stuff like that. It's it is the game these days.
- 10:31Speaker 3: So when it is a big home run and certain
- 10:35Speaker 3: things celebrate on the field, and then you have your
- 10:37Speaker 3: your guys in the dugout, so you're I think this
- 10:40Speaker 3: surprises Jim that I would be prouh home run chain
- 10:45Speaker 3: and stuff like that. But we play in an age
- 10:48Speaker 3: of day where you were trying to make the game
- 10:50Speaker 3: fun and all these other things that go on. It's
- 10:53Speaker 3: it's a no doubt or you gotta have something because
- 10:57Speaker 3: there's only so many home runs you're gonna hit in
- 10:59Speaker 3: this game, and there's only so many times you could
- 11:01Speaker 3: be able to celebrate and with your teammates and do
- 11:03Speaker 3: stuff like that.
- 11:04Speaker 4: So I'm all for it.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Tip of the cap to you. All right, Tip of
- 11:07Speaker 1: the cap, Kyle. Now, from what Lan says, you weren't
- 11:10Speaker 1: mister celebration.
- 11:14Speaker 5: No, I you know, we had quite a quite a
- 11:18Speaker 5: celebration in Baltimore with everything that happened. You know, you're
- 11:20Speaker 5: looking at another young team that really outperformed expectations in
- 11:25Speaker 5: twenty twenty three and really bought into a spring training.
- 11:30Speaker 5: It wasn't even a bit, honestly, it happened naturally with
- 11:33Speaker 5: there was four guys who four young guys who during
- 11:37Speaker 5: March Madness pulled some money together to really try and
- 11:42Speaker 5: really try and make some noise in the March Madness
- 11:45Speaker 5: tournament brackets. And they call themselves Fountain Financial. So that's
- 11:50Speaker 5: honestly where the water fountain came from from those young guys,
- 11:53Speaker 5: and they went into the season and played really well,
- 11:55Speaker 5: and Fountain Financial carried the o's to some success early,
- 11:59Speaker 5: so that's where the water.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Stuff came from.
- 12:01Speaker 5: But you know, I'm a glance here in the dugout
- 12:04Speaker 5: on the field right there as you're scoring whatever. What
- 12:07Speaker 5: I take exception to, which I think hitters would as well,
- 12:10Speaker 5: is when you're rounding first, staring down the picture, rounding second,
- 12:13Speaker 5: yelling at the picture, rounding third, doing something to the picture,
- 12:17Speaker 5: stomping on home plate, and doing something for the in
- 12:19Speaker 5: front of the picture, right. I don't think any hitter
- 12:22Speaker 5: wants to be embarrassed and screened at and told to
- 12:25Speaker 5: go back to the dugout every time they get struck out.
- 12:29Speaker 5: And I don't think it'd be right for a pitcher
- 12:31Speaker 5: to celebrate every single strikeout shoe shooing the hitter back.
- 12:36Speaker 2: To the dugout.
- 12:37Speaker 5: I think the other team would take exception to that,
- 12:39Speaker 5: and as they should.
- 12:40Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean, if.
- 12:42Speaker 5: You're doing this to celebrate and have a big moment, great.
- 12:46Speaker 5: If you're doing this in order to belittle the picture,
- 12:50Speaker 5: which is now linking into youth baseball, by the way,
- 12:53Speaker 5: whether we like it or not, you go to any
- 12:55Speaker 5: of these softball baseball games, there's kids doing this, and
- 13:00Speaker 5: sometimes it does end up, you know, being pointed at
- 13:03Speaker 5: the pitcher, and then you have you're trying to explain
- 13:06Speaker 5: to twelve and thirteen year olds and younger what sportsmanship
- 13:09Speaker 5: is and what it should be, and now you're the
- 13:11Speaker 5: bad guy for not letting the kids have fun. So
- 13:14Speaker 5: I think there is lines here with who you're doing
- 13:17Speaker 5: this toward and how you're respecting the game and respecting
- 13:20Speaker 5: your opponent, because let's be honest, at some point you're
- 13:23Speaker 5: going to be the guy getting struck out, and if
- 13:24Speaker 5: you don't want to get told to get back to
- 13:26Speaker 5: the dugout every single time, then let's have a little
- 13:29Speaker 5: bit of feel with what's going on toward the pitcher
- 13:31Speaker 5: on the field.
- 13:33Speaker 4: Good point.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Sportsmanship's good. So is fun, and we're going to have
- 13:36Speaker 1: more fun as we continue. When we come back with more,
- 13:39Speaker 1: we're going to talk a little pitching. You're watching Cardinal Territory.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I'm a Foul Territory network.
- 13:46Speaker 6: You know, we don't always have to do things because
- 13:48Speaker 6: that's how it's always been.
- 13:49Speaker 7: Look, people consider me old school, and I thought I was,
- 13:52Speaker 7: but then we had the pitch clock and the abs
- 13:55Speaker 7: and ban on shifts and all these things that we've
- 13:57Speaker 7: had for a long time in baseball, and you know what,
- 13:59Speaker 7: much like a mobile and the other mobile carriers. I'm
- 14:02Speaker 7: here for the new school and the changes that have
- 14:04Speaker 7: been made.
- 14:04Speaker 2: It's a good call.

- 14:46Speaker 1: All right, Kyle Lahy gets to start with the Cardinals,
- 14:49Speaker 1: having a couple of bumps in the road as he
- 14:51Speaker 1: transitions from the bullpen into the starting rotation. I talked
- 14:55Speaker 1: to him yesterday and he said, with all the pitches
- 14:57Speaker 1: he has and lance he's got, he's got a lot
- 15:00Speaker 1: of pitches. He said, he's having trouble figuring out what
- 15:05Speaker 1: to show guys as he gets to the second and
- 15:08Speaker 1: third time that he faces them. So what would your
- 15:10Speaker 1: advice be for a guy like Kyle Lahew, who's a
- 15:14Speaker 1: very talented.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Picture don't show them all the first time and the
- 15:18Speaker 3: second time. It's that simple, and then you got something
- 15:20Speaker 3: to show them the third or fourth time. You got
- 15:24Speaker 3: to simplify it, right. I think when you have a
- 15:27Speaker 3: lot of toys, it's easy just to go play with
- 15:30Speaker 3: the toys instead of execute the things you need to
- 15:33Speaker 3: execute in the right time, right place. There's times to
- 15:38Speaker 3: use all your toys, and then there's time to hide
- 15:41Speaker 3: them in your back pocket and don't anyone know you
- 15:43Speaker 3: have them, so you can trump them later when they
- 15:45Speaker 3: think they have the toy to beat you, and then
- 15:47Speaker 3: you can come in. It's like having that Pokemon card
- 15:50Speaker 3: that trumps everything, right, or whatever in the hell these
- 15:52Speaker 3: guys do.
- 15:53Speaker 4: I don't even know what they do anymore, but yeah.
- 15:57Speaker 3: I think that simplifying your approach through lineups to each hitter,
- 16:04Speaker 3: remembering what you use and how you use it, making
- 16:07Speaker 3: sure that you use things in the right situation.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Not showing you got No.
- 16:12Speaker 3: One on in the first inning, not showing the three
- 16:14Speaker 3: four hitter a pitch so it's there for you later.
- 16:18Speaker 3: That's all part of the game that Kyle and I
- 16:21Speaker 3: were brought up in. I think the game now is
- 16:25Speaker 3: show everything at all times, because you're gonna be out
- 16:27Speaker 3: there in five innings. And I think that that hurts
- 16:31Speaker 3: a guy like Kyle because he's giving them too many
- 16:34Speaker 3: looks at things, and he's also maybe even getting himself
- 16:38Speaker 3: in between because he has so many things.
- 16:41Speaker 4: And that's the thing.
- 16:42Speaker 3: It's like, oh, what should I use this, this or this,
- 16:44Speaker 3: And it's like, oh, well, I could use this too.
- 16:47Speaker 3: It's like, no, simplify, here's my three to this guy,
- 16:50Speaker 3: here's my three to this guy next time through, here's
- 16:53Speaker 3: my add on, and here's my add on if I
- 16:55Speaker 3: see him again. And then sometimes the guy just can't
- 16:59Speaker 3: hit it. Don't don't think he's going to figure it
- 17:01Speaker 3: out today. Just keep just get keep abusing that pitch
- 17:05Speaker 3: to him, and keep abusing that guy because he just
- 17:08Speaker 3: can't touch it. So don't show anything else because you
- 17:10Speaker 3: might be doing him a favor that comes with pitching
- 17:13Speaker 3: and doing it, and I think he will get better
- 17:17Speaker 3: at it the more he does it, because as a reliever,
- 17:19Speaker 3: it's go get my three outs with everything I got,
- 17:22Speaker 3: And as a starter, it's how can I get through
- 17:24Speaker 3: each inning without showing anybody anything and having fun later
- 17:28Speaker 3: in the game when I can just throw everything at
- 17:31Speaker 3: him when I get into a situation to get out
- 17:33Speaker 3: of an Indian. So that's the that's the back and
- 17:35Speaker 3: forth he's going to have to learn, because you have
- 17:37Speaker 3: to learn how to pitch a little bit instead of throw.
- 17:39Speaker 3: All these guys have been throwers because it's used your
- 17:42Speaker 3: best stuff at all times instead of using the right
- 17:44Speaker 3: stuff when you need to.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Justin you're keeping scoring home curses for lancel in so
- 17:51Speaker 1: far zero but one Pokemon reference.
- 17:53Speaker 4: I didn't see that coming.
- 17:55Speaker 5: Honestly, I thought we were in the middle of a
- 17:57Speaker 5: bit right there. I thought, like I did, Lance. I know,
- 18:00Speaker 5: I don't know when we can be trouble here. We're
- 18:01Speaker 5: normally focusing this to Jim. But I was like, did
- 18:04Speaker 5: somebody pay you to say the word toys seven times
- 18:07Speaker 5: in thirty seconds? Did somebody like did somebody try and
- 18:10Speaker 5: like say, hey, if you can work the word Pokemon
- 18:12Speaker 5: in here? Then we'll get you something like that was
- 18:15Speaker 5: that was a lot. I didn't know where you were
- 18:17Speaker 5: going with some of that.
- 18:18Speaker 4: We were also, but it would it would have hurt
- 18:21Speaker 4: people's feelings, so I had to.
- 18:22Speaker 5: Back we were we were almost to a parenting reference,
- 18:26Speaker 5: giving your kids.
- 18:28Speaker 4: I was going to hurt peoples feel Yeah, age.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Reverse, Okay, all that was agreat with his advice, though.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Uh yeah, I do. I mean, I think I think
- 18:41Speaker 2: when you have.
- 18:44Speaker 5: A lot of pitches to throw, I think it can
- 18:47Speaker 5: complicate things, but obviously that gives you a lot of
- 18:51Speaker 5: unpredictability to work with. And for me also, Jim, I
- 18:55Speaker 5: thought it was interesting back to poke in front of
- 18:57Speaker 5: you that you ask Lance that question first when he
- 19:01Speaker 5: primarily focused on one pitch his entire career instead of
- 19:05Speaker 5: you know, throwing that question to me, who you know,
- 19:07Speaker 5: threw six five most of my career and needed to
- 19:10Speaker 5: because I didn't have that landslip fastball.
- 19:12Speaker 2: But anyways, I digress.
- 19:15Speaker 5: I mean I think that if I look back at
- 19:19Speaker 5: my career, especially the last few years when I started
- 19:21Speaker 5: throwing the cutter more and then transition to sweeper from
- 19:25Speaker 5: twenty twenty three on, I think the key here for Kyle,
- 19:28Speaker 5: in my mind, would be get a detailed report here
- 19:32Speaker 5: and do your research on all of these hitters that
- 19:35Speaker 5: you're facing today. I mean, he's not going to do
- 19:38Speaker 5: it today because here we are, you know, probably before
- 19:39Speaker 5: the game. But do a detailed report on which three
- 19:44Speaker 5: pitches that I have are going to be best against
- 19:47Speaker 5: each of these guys here. That's going to be my
- 19:49Speaker 5: primary plan for the first time three And this is
- 19:52Speaker 5: just speaking from reverence on what I did each and
- 19:55Speaker 5: every start. Where's my fastball location I'm going to when
- 19:58Speaker 5: I need to throw a heater. Which of my spin
- 20:01Speaker 5: is better to each of these hitters on the righties,
- 20:04Speaker 5: is here a righty, righty change up guy? And on
- 20:07Speaker 5: the lefties is my cutter better in or a way right?
- 20:11Speaker 5: And then from there, you know, yeah, two seam, four seam,
- 20:13Speaker 5: I'm gonna mix both of them, but I'm picking the
- 20:16Speaker 5: three pitches for the first time through that that I'm
- 20:20Speaker 5: gonna throw, and then I'll move to the other ones
- 20:22Speaker 5: if I need to.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Like Land said, if you don't.
- 20:24Speaker 5: Need to, then keep them on the same three and
- 20:26Speaker 5: if you get in a jam, you're gonna use all
- 20:28Speaker 5: five if you need to. If you can get early
- 20:30Speaker 5: outs with a cutter or a change up like I
- 20:33Speaker 5: tried to do on a lefty. Great, you only use
- 20:35Speaker 5: one or two pitches, right, and then you put that
- 20:37Speaker 5: in your rolodex for for later in the game. Rollodecks.
- 20:40Speaker 5: Yeah that was a random word my Pokemon. I'm falling
- 20:42Speaker 5: into it, jeez. Anyways, I think that's that's how I
- 20:47Speaker 5: would approach it. Get your two or three pitches for
- 20:49Speaker 5: each guy that you think is your way to go,
- 20:52Speaker 5: and then adjust as you need to. Pedro Avon I
- 20:55Speaker 5: don't know Poso as well, but those two guys are
- 20:57Speaker 5: really good at that as well.
- 20:57Speaker 2: And you know that would be my to find plans.
- 21:01Speaker 3: So your simple life fan is to is to actually pitch,
- 21:04Speaker 3: not throw everything right down the middle of the spin as.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Hard as you can.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I didn't have that ability.
- 21:10Speaker 5: Oh sure, you know, throw every pitch in the middle
- 21:12Speaker 5: part of the zone, right, But that's the jo, that's
- 21:15Speaker 5: the you know, I have pee Alonzo game in the
- 21:17Speaker 5: name nicknamed the Nibbler, right because once I got after Oh,
- 21:21Speaker 5: I'm going to my pitches most of the time here,
- 21:24Speaker 5: and that's what gives that oo strike gives me the
- 21:28Speaker 5: liberty to go after some pitchers pitches, and Kyle has
- 21:31Speaker 5: that ability. But then I also just you know, have
- 21:34Speaker 5: a game plan for the first time through and kind
- 21:36Speaker 5: of stick to it a little bit until they force
- 21:38Speaker 5: you off of it, and and know the first you know,
- 21:42Speaker 5: the next four or five hitters. What am I trying
- 21:44Speaker 5: to do here? When I get ahead, what's my pitch
- 21:45Speaker 5: to go to? And when you get ahead, go to it.
- 21:48Speaker 5: You know you've done your research.
- 21:49Speaker 2: You know. I got the nick name back in Minnesota
- 21:52Speaker 2: from Mitch Garver.
- 21:53Speaker 5: He every now and then called me Tim Kirchin because
- 21:56Speaker 5: I would have this random stat on you named the hitter,
- 21:59Speaker 5: and I say in the meeting, I'll be like, all right, guys,
- 22:02Speaker 5: this guy doesn't have a two strike ball in play
- 22:05Speaker 5: on a slider in the last three weeks. So the
- 22:08Speaker 5: very first pitch I'm throwing this guy when we get
- 22:09Speaker 5: to two strikes as a slider, he hasn't hit one
- 22:12Speaker 5: in three weeks? Why change?
- 22:14Speaker 2: Right? So to me, I needed to know that stuff so.
- 22:17Speaker 5: That when I get in that situation, my confidence is
- 22:19Speaker 5: through the roof because I know that I've already done
- 22:22Speaker 5: the preparation work.
- 22:23Speaker 2: If you're out there just kind of going with the flow.
- 22:25Speaker 5: Sometimes that works, but when you have five or six pitches,
- 22:28Speaker 5: it's a little difficult, like, oh, when am I going
- 22:29Speaker 5: to work this one in?
- 22:30Speaker 2: When am I going to work this one in?
- 22:32Speaker 5: No?
- 22:32Speaker 2: No, I have your plan for the ones you use.
- 22:34Speaker 2: And if you don't get to your change up today,
- 22:36Speaker 2: you don't get to your change up, maybe you didn't.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Need it any advantage you could get. I like it,
- 22:41Speaker 1: all right.
- 22:41Speaker 3: Last thing, there's a way that's and you got to
- 22:43Speaker 3: go off the pitch you through before. Sometimes if you
- 22:45Speaker 3: don't throw and tunnel off the right pitch, then you're
- 22:48Speaker 3: just doing the pitcher of favor.
- 22:49Speaker 4: So you got to you got to.
- 22:52Speaker 3: Use the right pitch at the right time with the
- 22:53Speaker 3: right one following it, and that's you know, in the
- 22:56Speaker 3: right location. So those are the things he's going to
- 22:58Speaker 3: have to learn and most pitch today need to learn.
- 23:02Speaker 2: All right.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Last thing we're going to touch on before we close
- 23:06Speaker 1: this down, and it's a bit of pie in the sky,
- 23:10Speaker 1: right It's it's hopes and dreams here. But let's say
- 23:14Speaker 1: the current version of the Cardinals that we're seeing is
- 23:17Speaker 1: the one they are, and we get closer to the
- 23:20Speaker 1: trade deadline, and it's a rebuild and they're going to
- 23:23Speaker 1: be sellers and all these guys that they picked up
- 23:26Speaker 1: just to flip lance if they get in that position
- 23:31Speaker 1: and they're in contention and they're still playing really good baseball,
- 23:36Speaker 1: does that change the plan for hind Bloom in your guestimation.
- 23:41Speaker 4: Here, No, you flip the guys that you need to flip.
- 23:45Speaker 4: I don't think there's.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Anyone that they that they have that's unflippable that's going
- 23:51Speaker 3: to say, oh, if we trade this guy, we're not
- 23:54Speaker 3: going to make a push that that's not who.
- 23:56Speaker 4: They signed for one year they signed.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Then anols to say it, okay, you've got May. You
- 24:05Speaker 3: tell me if you can't flip May and standic for
- 24:08Speaker 3: a starter with five years of service. You do that
- 24:12Speaker 3: in a heartbeat like I'm sorry, that's just what you do.
- 24:16Speaker 3: You can all and then you get a cheaper reliever
- 24:18Speaker 3: from another team for a double a reliever. You know,
- 24:22Speaker 3: there's ways to fill out rosters and all that. So
- 24:25Speaker 3: now if you're telling me I would not ever give
- 24:28Speaker 3: away any of the young guys right now, right, do
- 24:31Speaker 3: not change the script to where it's like, hey, I
- 24:33Speaker 3: want to give a red of this guy and this
- 24:35Speaker 3: guy unless he's a controllable starter. They need controllable frontline
- 24:39Speaker 3: starters if they actually want to go.
- 24:42Speaker 4: All the way through. That's the truth of the matter.
- 24:45Speaker 3: So anything that you can do to get controllable frontline
- 24:48Speaker 3: starter without messing with your.
- 24:50Speaker 4: Everyday lineup is what you do. And then if you can't.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Then you get controllable future starters that have the ability
- 24:57Speaker 3: to get there, and you use guys that are going
- 24:59Speaker 3: to be gone after the year because none of them
- 25:02Speaker 3: are you going to throw a qualifying offer to get
- 25:04Speaker 3: a pickback, and none of them are going to magically
- 25:07Speaker 3: make you a World Series contender in the playoffs because
- 25:10Speaker 3: none of them are that.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Guy, or they would be on another team already.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Kyle, your reaction.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Thumbs down, aholl Way, thumbs down. I hate it.
- 25:22Speaker 3: Because I think it's May, Stanek and Rameiro like that's it,
- 25:26Speaker 3: and like you can replace those guys right now in
- 25:29Speaker 3: your organization.
- 25:33Speaker 2: I mean, I just disagree, and I think that's okay.
- 25:36Speaker 2: But I think, like if.
- 25:37Speaker 5: Dustin May is throwing the ball so well that he
- 25:40Speaker 5: is the you know, one of the more sought after
- 25:42Speaker 5: starters on the market, then I think that's probably the
- 25:46Speaker 5: reason why your team is in playoff contention. And I
- 25:49Speaker 5: think if there's one area, just like you mentioned needing
- 25:52Speaker 5: controllable starting pitching. If there's one area that is going
- 25:56Speaker 5: to really hurt this team down the stretch, it's to
- 26:00Speaker 5: be losing Dustin May and losing a starter. That's unless
- 26:04Speaker 5: Quinn Matthews or you know, some of these other guys
- 26:09Speaker 5: or Dobbins or somebody steps up and becomes that guy.
- 26:12Speaker 5: Like I think that is the way to say, hey,
- 26:15Speaker 5: we're going to stay the course and we're gonna do this,
- 26:17Speaker 5: and we're gonna trade May. That is the way to
- 26:19Speaker 5: take your team from wild Carter Division contention to out
- 26:23Speaker 5: of it.
- 26:24Speaker 2: That's just my opinion.
- 26:25Speaker 5: And yeah, I personally just think that where your team
- 26:29Speaker 5: is roster wise, if you feel like trading Dustin May
- 26:34Speaker 5: is the way to set yourself up for future pitching.
- 26:37Speaker 2: That's just not how I would do it.
- 26:38Speaker 5: You have young, controllable position players that are going to,
- 26:43Speaker 5: for the baseball sake, be controllable and cheap going forward.
- 26:49Speaker 5: Then now at the time you go spend on starting pitching,
- 26:52Speaker 5: and when you have controllable starting pitching that is going
- 26:54Speaker 5: to be cheap, then you and if you don't have
- 26:57Speaker 5: the position players, then you go spend on position players,
- 27:01Speaker 5: waiting for both to be controllable and home grown could
- 27:06Speaker 5: possibly be waiting on something way farther down the line
- 27:09Speaker 5: than I don't think Cardinals fans really want.
- 27:10Speaker 2: To wait on it.
- 27:11Speaker 5: So if all of your position players say Walker and
- 27:14Speaker 5: these guys keep the course here and Gorman gets the
- 27:17Speaker 5: power numbers, keeping going, and Herrera is who you say
- 27:20Speaker 5: he is, a weatherhole is now who you think he is,
- 27:23Speaker 5: you are now set to compete in this division and
- 27:25Speaker 5: in the game of baseball for the next four or
- 27:27Speaker 5: five years. So you go get the starting pitching that
- 27:29Speaker 5: you need to add, and you just pay it because
- 27:33Speaker 5: now you're ready to get your payroll back to one
- 27:35Speaker 5: eighty two hundred and go win a World Series. And
- 27:38Speaker 5: if you can't, you have a chance to be a
- 27:39Speaker 5: playoff team right now.
- 27:41Speaker 2: What does that do for revenues?
- 27:42Speaker 5: To be in the playoffs right now as a team? Way,
- 27:46Speaker 5: revenues is what this team needs, apparently, and that's how
- 27:49Speaker 5: you go do it, That's my opinion.
- 27:52Speaker 2: That's why I'm.
- 27:52Speaker 3: Sitting here control for a starting pitcher or keeping destiny
- 27:56Speaker 3: to lose in the wildcard round.
- 27:58Speaker 5: Okay, all right, all right, if that's possibility, Lance, then
- 28:01Speaker 5: we'll get there. We'll cross that bridge when we get there.
- 28:03Speaker 2: But you show me.
- 28:04Speaker 4: That's the question.
- 28:06Speaker 5: Okay, if we get there, if we get there in
- 28:09Speaker 5: August or in July. If we get there in July,
- 28:15Speaker 5: and you can trade Dustin May for a five year,
- 28:17Speaker 5: controllable big league starter that is as good or better
- 28:21Speaker 5: than the guys you have, show me the deal.
- 28:23Speaker 2: And maybe I'll change my mind.
- 28:25Speaker 5: But until that deal is on the table, trading Dustin
- 28:28Speaker 5: May in my mind for a high level, low A
- 28:31Speaker 5: or high A prospect that might be a guy I
- 28:34Speaker 5: think you're just a chance at That's.
- 28:37Speaker 4: All they traded for last winter was high eight and
- 28:39Speaker 4: double A arms there.
- 28:40Speaker 5: I'm just saying, you tell me. We talked about experience.
- 28:44Speaker 5: We're talking about experience. What better experience than to get
- 28:46Speaker 5: this young core a chance at a playoff run down
- 28:49Speaker 5: the stretch going into the next few years.
- 28:52Speaker 2: I hear, what will that do for the team?
- 28:53Speaker 3: Dustin Mayson never thrown over one hundred and thirty iniings.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Do you think that he's magically going to just go
- 28:57Speaker 3: on into September at one hundred and eighty pitches and
- 29:00Speaker 3: and and carry yourself.
- 29:02Speaker 4: The numbers guys are gonna tell you no.
- 29:05Speaker 1: All right, listen, maybe there is plenty of time to
- 29:09Speaker 1: continue this argument. Okay, we will do it in a
- 29:12Speaker 1: future episode, but we gotta shut her down for now
- 29:15Speaker 1: because Kyle's got somewhere to go. That's gonna do it.
- 29:19Speaker 2: It's teacher appreciation week.
- 29:20Speaker 5: It's teacher appreciation week at Saint John's School and bill Ridge,
- 29:23Speaker 5: so I gonna go do some recess due. Thank you
- 29:26Speaker 5: for all the teachers out there. Thank you for all
- 29:28Speaker 5: the teachers that teach our kids. Appreciate you, and.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Thank you for watching this edition of Cardinal Territory. We'll
- 29:33Speaker 1: see you next time. Hopefully that one won't suck.
