- 0:00Welcome to Reformed Thinking and welcome to this deep dive.
- 0:02I'm really glad you could join us today.
- 0:04We're going to be looking into, well, a pretty remarkable few
- 0:07months in David Brainer's life. Yeah, it's quite a period.
- 0:10To kick things off, just try and picture this scene he describes
- 0:14in his diary. He talks about being in such
- 0:16intense prayer that he was, and this is his phrase, quite wet
- 0:21with perspiration, though in the shade and the cool wind.
- 0:25That really grabs you, doesn't it?
- 0:26It does. It instantly gives you a feel
- 0:28for the the raw emotion and the spiritual focus that really
- 0:32marked this time for him. Absolutely.
- 0:34That level of physical exertion and prayer it it says a lot.
- 0:38So our goal with this deep dive is to, you know, carefully look
- 0:41some key excerpts from the life and diary of David Brainerd, the
- 0:46one edited by Jonathan Edwards. Right.
- 0:48Edward saw something truly special in Brainerd's
- 0:50experiences. Exactly.
- 0:52And the idea here is for you, the listener, to quickly get a
- 0:55handle on Brainerd's spiritual life during this time, how he
- 0:58was getting ready for ministry, and what really shaped him in
- 1:02those critical months just before he got his license to
- 1:04preach. Think of it as a way to get
- 1:07quickly acquainted with the core of his thinking and, well, his
- 1:10inner life during this formative stage.
- 1:12Considering your shortcut, if you like to being well informed
- 1:16about this, well, really quite remarkable figure.
- 1:18And the period we're zeroing in on is right after he left Yale
- 1:21College. So we're talking April through
- 1:24July of 1742. Right, a time when he was laser
- 1:27focused on preparing himself for gospel work.
- 1:29And what makes these specific diary entries so, so compelling
- 1:34is just how honest they are. It's almost like a minute by
- 1:37minute feed of his internal spiritual battles.
- 1:39And you know those moments of breakthrough.
- 1:41Gives you a real window, doesn't.
- 1:43It it really does a window into how he understood grace, sin,
- 1:46God, sovereignty, these big reformed concepts, but played
- 1:50out in the day-to-day reality of this young guy feeling called to
- 1:53preach. OK, so let's let's dive in.
- 1:55Let's start looking at Brainerd Spiritual Walk right as he began
- 1:58the third book of his diary. This is April 1742.
- 2:03He was staying with Reverend Mr. Mills in Ripton, studying
- 2:05divinity. Yeah, and he wasn't just staying
- 2:07put, he was also visiting other ministers in the area, people
- 2:11like Mr. Cook in Stratford, Mr. Graham in Southbury, Mr. Bellamy
- 2:16in Bethlehem. Soaking it all in, presumably.
- 2:19Right, networking, learning. But what's interesting is what
- 2:21you mentioned earlier, his own assessment right at the start.
- 2:24Exactly as he starts this new record, he immediately flags up
- 2:29this feeling of spiritual decline.
- 2:31He talks about losing life and warmth in divine things.
- 2:35Though no pretending things are great.
- 2:36Not at all. This immediate confession of,
- 2:39you know what he saw as spiritual coldness.
- 2:42It sets the stage for everything that follows.
- 2:45Like on April first, he writes about lacking free access to God
- 2:48in prayer. It's quite specific.
- 2:51It is, and he expresses this longing to be humbled deeply in
- 2:54the dust before God. It's an immediate sign of how he
- 2:57saw Himself before his Creator. And he goes even further,
- 3:00doesn't he? Oh yeah, he flat out says I
- 3:02deserve hell every day for not loving my Lord more.
- 3:06And any kind of spiritual renewal he experiences he
- 3:08attributes only to God's special assistance.
- 3:11So 0 room for self congratulations.
- 3:13None. He questions any kind of
- 3:16boasting, recognizing his total reliance on God for the being
- 3:20and every act of grace. He puts it so starkly, Oh if
- 3:24ever I get to heaven it will be because God will and nothing
- 3:26else, for I never did anything of myself but get away from God.
- 3:30Wow, that's a blunt. It is, and he even looks ahead
- 3:33to heaven, anticipating being astonished at the unsearchable
- 3:36riches of divine grace. This first entry really lays
- 3:40down his foundational belief. Salvation, any spiritual good,
- 3:44it all comes from God's free, unearned favor.
- 3:47It's pure grace. That really sets a tone.
- 3:49OK, so given the strong sense of dependence, of unworthiness
- 3:54even, how does that play out in his, like his ambitions or his
- 3:57view of God's leading at this point?
- 3:58Does he focus inward or outward? Well, that's a really good
- 4:00question. It makes you think about how our
- 4:02view of our own spiritual condition can actually steer our
- 4:05desires right On April 2nd, the very next day, he describes
- 4:08feeling much resigned, calm and serene in secret prayer.
- 4:12So a shift already. A shift.
- 4:14Yeah, he uses this beautiful image.
- 4:17What are all the storms of this lower world?
- 4:20If Jesus by his Spirit does but come walking on the seas, it
- 4:24captures the sense of inner peace he could find regardless
- 4:27of outer turmoil. Despite feeling unworthy just
- 4:30the day before. Exactly.
- 4:32And what's really interesting here is how his desire seemed to
- 4:34be fluctuating. He mentions he'd previously
- 4:38found much pleasure in the prospect of the heathen being
- 4:41brought home to Christ and wanted to be involved in that
- 4:43work. Like the missionary impulse.
- 4:44Yeah, but now he says his soul more frequently desires to die
- 4:49to be with Christ. He wants his soul wrapped up in
- 4:52divine love for his desires for God to just grow and grow.
- 4:56So a longing for heaven over service.
- 4:59It seems like it at that moment, but then later that same evening
- 5:03he finds refreshment in prayer again and his hopes turn back
- 5:06towards the advancement of Christ's Kingdom in the world.
- 5:10OK, so it's not either, it's attention.
- 5:11It's attention, definitely this early back and forth between
- 5:14wanting to depart and be with Christ and wanting to stay and
- 5:17serve. It's right there from the
- 5:19beginning. And then physical health comes
- 5:20into play too, doesn't it? It does.
- 5:23On April 3rd, he records feeling very much amiss, had a bad
- 5:27night, and this physical weakness leads him to think his
- 5:30soul would exceedingly rejoice if God just took him home right
- 5:33then. Makes sense.
- 5:34Suffering can make you long for release.
- 5:36For sure, but even then his desires frame spiritually.
- 5:40He wants to be always humble and resigned to God for his soul to
- 5:43be more fixed on himself, meaning God, so he could be more
- 5:46fitted both for doing and suffering.
- 5:49So even in weakness, the focus is on being useful to God's
- 5:52purposes. Precisely whatever the personal
- 5:54cost. Then April 4th, it's a Lord's
- 5:57Day and he describes his heart as wandering and lifeless, which
- 6:00as you said, seems to have been a fairly common feeling for him.
- 6:03The. Ups and downs.
- 6:04Right. But in the evening God meets
- 6:06him. He gets faith in prayer.
- 6:08His soul melts in some measure. He tastes divine sweetness.
- 6:12So relief comes. Relief comes, and then this
- 6:14longing bursts out. To climb up near to him, and
- 6:17love, and long and plead and wrestle and stretch after him,
- 6:21and for deliverance from the body of sin and death.
- 6:24That body of sin and death phrase?
- 6:25That's biblical, right? From Romans.
- 6:27Yeah, Romans 7, Paul's description of the ongoing
- 6:30struggle against our own sinful nature.
- 6:32Brainerd clearly felt that burden very, very heavily.
- 6:36You. Can tell he mourns just the idea
- 6:38of losing sight of his beloved again.
- 6:40There's a real passion there A. Very passionate, almost you
- 6:43could say visceral pursuit of God.
- 6:46OK, so we've seen these initial days, this mix of highs and
- 6:49lows, sweetness and struggle. But then you mentioned he notes
- 6:52a sharp turn Into Darkness. Yeah, it seems quite abrupt.
- 6:55After those moments of comfort on the evening of April 5th, he
- 6:58describes himself quite starkly as void of all relish of divine
- 7:03things. All relish gone just like that.
- 7:05Just like that he feels much of the prevalence of corruption,
- 7:09sees in himself a disposition to all manner of sin, and this
- 7:13plunges him into a very great gloom, casts him into the depths
- 7:17of melancholy. Melancholy.
- 7:19Yeah, a common term back then for depression, often with
- 7:22spiritual overtones. Right.
- 7:24And it fills him with horror, leaves him with no comfort in
- 7:28heaven or earth, a total contrast to the sweetness he'd
- 7:31have felt just a day or so before.
- 7:33That's a huge swing. What happens next?
- 7:36Does he stay there? Well, on April 6th he's in a
- 7:38similar state initially Finds a bit of relief reading over his
- 7:42own diary entries, interestingly enough.
- 7:44Seeing God's past faithfulness, maybe?
- 7:46Perhaps, but then he feels suddenly struck with a damp from
- 7:50the sense I had on my own vileness back down again.
- 7:53He cried to God to cleanse me from my exceeding filthiness, to
- 7:57give me repentance and pardon. So turning to God even in the
- 8:00depths. Yes, and then something shifts
- 8:03again. He finds it sweet to pray and
- 8:06incredibly, he feels he could think of undergoing the greatest
- 8:08sufferings in the cause of Christ with pleasure.
- 8:11Wow, from horror to willingness to suffer just like that.
- 8:15It seems so. He even expresses willingness,
- 8:17if God directs it, to suffer banishment from my native land
- 8:21among the heathen, that I might do something for their self
- 8:23salvation in distresses and deaths of any kind.
- 8:26That's intense to embrace suffering for the gospel even
- 8:29while feeling vile. It really speaks to his
- 8:32devotion, doesn't it? And that same day God enables
- 8:35him to wrestled earnestly for others, for the Kingdom of
- 8:39Christ in the world, and for dear Christian friends.
- 8:42So this power of intercession kicks in again.
- 8:44Yeah, this deep spiritual energy to pray for others.
- 8:48He feels weaned from the world and from my own reputation
- 8:51amongst men willing to be despised and to be a gazing
- 8:55stock for the world to behold. Letting go of worldly status.
- 8:58Completely. He struggles to even describe
- 9:00how he felt. Not much joy, he says, but some
- 9:03sense of the majesty of God, which made me, as it were,
- 9:06tremble. Seeing himself as mean and vile
- 9:09actually made him more willing for God to do whatever he wanted
- 9:12with him. Fascinating, feeling vile,
- 9:14leading to greater surrender. His description of trembling
- 9:17even in prayer, it really does paint a picture of his spiritual
- 9:20walk. Shows that deep awareness of his
- 9:22own condition. It really does.
- 9:23It highlights this constant back and forth, you know, intense
- 9:27spiritual connection on one hand and this profound sense of his
- 9:30own unworthiness on the other. It's always there.
- 9:32So the wrestling continues. Oh yeah, April 7th.
- 9:36The intensity fades a bit. He keeps praying but feels dull
- 9:40in the evening. His spiritual state is almost
- 9:42never static. Always fluctuating.
- 9:44Seems like it. Then on April 8th, his hopes for
- 9:48the conversion of the Native Americans get raised again.
- 9:51He writes. Oh, that God would bring in
- 9:53great numbers of them to Jesus Christ.
- 9:55I cannot but hope I shall see that glorious day.
- 9:58Back to that outward focus. Yes, but still paired with this
- 10:01inner self-assessment, everything in this world
- 10:03exceeding vile and little to me. I look so on myself.
- 10:07He gets some little dawn of comfort and prayer, especially
- 10:10at night, some faith and power of intercession for his own
- 10:14growth and for other believers. So praying for himself and
- 10:16others. Right, and he concludes it is
- 10:19good to wrestle for divine blessings.
- 10:21It shows that dual focus again personal holiness and concern
- 10:24for others, particularly the unreached.
- 10:26And this sense of his own sinfulness, it doesn't let up,
- 10:29does it? Not really.
- 10:31April 9th and 10th. His morning prayers lack
- 10:33sensible sweetness, though he keeps this delightful prospect
- 10:37of heaven in view. But that thought makes him feel
- 10:40more amazed than ever. For I see myself infinitely vile
- 10:44and unworthy. The contrast is stark for him.
- 10:46Very he feels heartless and dull, longs for God's presence,
- 10:51but isn't feeling that divine and heavenly sweetness.
- 10:54He sees himself as the one most needing God's grace and yet most
- 10:58likely to abuse it. That's a harsh self judgement.
- 11:01It is. He spends much time in secret
- 11:03prayer on the 10th, gets some comfort, but still feels so low,
- 11:08so little sense of God's presence, that he hardly knows
- 11:10what to call faith. Questioning his own faith.
- 11:13Yeah, and he feels the weight of the sins of my youth and the
- 11:15dreadful sin of my nature. I am all sin.
- 11:18I cannot think nor act, but every emotion is sin.
- 11:21That sounds like, well, like the doctrine of total depravity
- 11:24lived. Out I think that's exactly
- 11:25right, that reformed understanding that sin effects
- 11:27every part of us, even our best intentions.
- 11:30He feels it acutely yet. Even in that state, there's a
- 11:32glimmer as hope about ministry. There is, amazingly, on that
- 11:36same day, April 10th, despite feeling all sin, he says his
- 11:41hopes of being employed in the cause of God, which of late have
- 11:44been almost extinct, seem now a little revived.
- 11:47How does he square that feeling totally sinful yet hoping to
- 11:50serve? He frames it through God's
- 11:52purpose in the struggle he hopes his late distresses and awful
- 11:56apprehensions might prove. But Christ's school to make me
- 11:59fit for greater service by teaching me the great lesson of
- 12:01humility. OK, the trials aren't just
- 12:04random suffering, they're training.
- 12:06Exactly. He connects his hardships
- 12:08directly to his preparation for ministry.
- 12:11God is using the darkness to teach him humility, which he
- 12:13needs for the ministry. That phrase, Christ's school for
- 12:17humility, That really changes how you might look at
- 12:19difficulties in your own life, doesn't it?
- 12:21A different perspective. It absolutely reframes things.
- 12:24It suggests purpose behind the pain.
- 12:26So moving on April 11th. He feels little spiritual
- 12:29vitality but has gratitude for God's grace and some sweetness.
- 12:32Thinking about heaven, still looking for?
- 12:34Always. Then after public worship, God
- 12:37gives him special assistance and prayer.
- 12:39He wrestled with my dear Lord with much sweetness and
- 12:42intercession was made a delightful employment to me.
- 12:45He finds joy thinking about the resurrection morning.
- 12:48So moments. Of real delight.
- 12:49Breakthrough they do. And April 12th seems like a
- 12:52significant moment of encouragement.
- 12:54The Lord was pleased to lift up the light of His countenance
- 12:57upon me in secret prayer, making the time very precious light of
- 13:01His. Countenance that sounds like
- 13:02feeling God's favor. His smile almost precisely.
- 13:06He gets much encouragement respecting future serviceable
- 13:09Ness in the cause of God. He's specially assisted to
- 13:12intercede and plead for poor souls for the growth of Christ's
- 13:15Kingdom and for grace for himself to fit him for special
- 13:18services so renewed. Sense of calling and purpose?
- 13:22Yes, and. Accompanied by peace, he feels
- 13:25exceedingly calm and quite resigned to God, respecting my
- 13:28future employment when and where he pleased.
- 13:30His faith lifts him above the world.
- 13:33He doesn't need human approval because Christ's favor was
- 13:36infinitely better. Wow.
- 13:38That's a high point, it really seems.
- 13:39To be He sees infinite wisdom in all the dispensations of God
- 13:43towards me, a moment of profound acceptance and trust, but the
- 13:47self. Awareness doesn't vanish, no.
- 13:49Never April 13th. He still sees himself as very
- 13:53mean and vile, wondering why people show him respect.
- 13:56Yet he finds comfort in wrestling with God, knowing God
- 14:00always sends me needed supplies and raises him up when he feels
- 14:04like 1 dead constant. Dependence always.
- 14:06Then April 14th and 15th, he's longing for communion with
- 14:10Christ and for the mortification of indwelling corruption,
- 14:13especially pride mortification. That's about putting sin to
- 14:16death, right? Yeah, the ongoing fight.
- 14:18Exactly. That spiritual battle to kill
- 14:20sinful desires. He looks forward to the sweet
- 14:22day coming where in the weary will be at rest.
- 14:25His desires are centered in God, wanting inward purity and
- 14:28holiness 10,000 times more than for anything here below a clear.
- 14:32Desire for sanctification, for becoming more like Christ, Very.
- 14:35Clear and from April 16th to 18th.
- 14:38He often finds sensible joy in prayer, sometimes longs much to
- 14:43be dissolved and to be with Christ.
- 14:45He wants to grow in grace every day, but worries about his
- 14:48barrenness, feeling like an unfruitful tree.
- 14:50God might cut down that tension. Again, between longing for
- 14:54heaven and wanting to be fruitful here, right?
- 14:56On Sunday the 18th, he prays in the woods, gets assistance of
- 14:59God's Spirit, pleads fervently for God's Kingdom, and
- 15:02intercedes for friends. He feels infinitely indebted to
- 15:06God, sees his failings, feels he's done, as it were, nothing
- 15:10for God. It's quite.
- 15:11Something how his intense desire for personal holiness and his
- 15:14passion for God's Kingdom work are just so tightly woven
- 15:17together in these entries. And then April 19th, you
- 15:20mentioned a particularly intense practice.
- 15:22Yes, this. Day really stands out.
- 15:24He specifically set it apart for fasting and prayer.
- 15:27It shows the depth of his devotion and his focus on
- 15:29preparing for ministry. Why?
- 15:30Fasting and prayer specifically for that he wanted to.
- 15:33Seek divine aid and direction for the great work of preaching
- 15:36the Gospel. He needed clarity and
- 15:38empowerment. Makes sense?
- 15:39So what happened that day in the morning?
- 15:41He felt the power of intercession for precious
- 15:44immortal souls, for the advancement of the Kingdom of my
- 15:47dear Lord and Savior in the world.
- 15:50He experienced this most sweet resignation, even joy, at the
- 15:55thought of suffering, hardships, distress, even death to promote
- 15:59God's Kingdom, joy and. Potential suffering seems so.
- 16:02And he had special enlargement that freedom and scope again in
- 16:06pleading for the enlightening and conversion of the poor
- 16:08heathen in the. Afternoon, he says.
- 16:10God. Was with me of a truth he was
- 16:13enabled so to agonize and prayer that I was quite wet with
- 16:16perspiration, though in the shade and the cool wind.
- 16:19There's that vivid image again, physical.
- 16:21Intensity, right? His soul was drawn out very much
- 16:24for the world, for multitudes of souls.
- 16:26He felt more enlargement, more capacity praying for sinners
- 16:29than for believers, though he felt he could cry out for both.
- 16:32He enjoyed great sweetness and communion with my dear Savior,
- 16:35felt completely weaned from this world and totally resigned to
- 16:39God in everything that's an. Incredibly intense day, and
- 16:42interestingly, his birthday follows right after this.
- 16:46Does that context shed any light?
- 16:47I think it. Highlights his consistent focus.
- 16:49His 24th birthday, April 20th, isn't about celebration in the
- 16:53usual sense. He reflects on God's mercy over
- 16:56the past year, but also on how poorly he feels he kept his vows
- 17:00to be holy. The Lord's still critical.
- 17:02Of himself, yes. But with a desire to live more
- 17:05to His glory, he calls the birthday a sweet, a happy day.
- 17:09Feeling his soul was never so drawn out an intercession for
- 17:12others, he had a most fervent wrestle with the Lord.
- 17:16For my enemies, praying for. Enemies on his birthday?
- 17:18Yeah, Longing. To live to God and to be all
- 17:21together devoted to Him. I wanted to wear out my life and
- 17:24His service and for His glory. The transition from the intense
- 17:28fasting day to this birthday reflection is seamless.
- 17:31It shows that for him, this spiritual pursuit wasn't just an
- 17:34event, it was his whole life. A life lived.
- 17:36In that intensity exactly. And it continues, April 21st to
- 17:4024th. He feels much calmness and
- 17:42resignation, still unable to wrestle for numbers of souls,
- 17:45finding much fervency in the sweet duty of intercession.
- 17:48He even notes having more sweetness and intercession for
- 17:51others than in any other part of prayer.
- 17:53His focus. Seems very outward oriented in
- 17:55prayer often. Yes, then April 25th, a Lord's
- 17:59Day, is another peak, about two hours in private prayer enabled
- 18:03more than ordinarily to agonize for immortal souls.
- 18:07And again, body was quite wet with sweat.
- 18:09Physical toll. Again, yes.
- 18:11And he prays for the meekness and calmness of the Lamb of God,
- 18:15finding it a sweet disposition heartily to forgive all injuries
- 18:18done us, to wish our greatest enemies as well as we do our own
- 18:21souls. He longs to be more and more
- 18:24conformed to thee conformity. To Christ forgiveness key theme,
- 18:27definitely. That night he's exceedingly
- 18:30melted with divine love, gets a feeling sense of the blessedness
- 18:34of the upper world power and intercession again for believers
- 18:37and unbelievers. He wished and longed for the
- 18:40coming of my dear Lord, wanting to join the angelic hosts and
- 18:43praises wholly free from imperfection.
- 18:45Such a strong. Heavenly folk, immense he.
- 18:47Says all I want is to be more holy, more like my dear Lord.
- 18:50Oh for sanctification, my very soul pants.
- 18:53For the complete restoration of the blessed image of my Savior.
- 18:56He even dashed is off a poem, renouncing the vain world,
- 19:00declaring my God shall then have all my heart poetry too.
- 19:03He's pouring it all out seems like.
- 19:05It then April 26th he's still in a sweet frame but then feels
- 19:09spiritual pride stirring and God uses that as an humbling season
- 19:13for him the. Battle never stops, even after
- 19:16such highs. Never it.
- 19:18Reminds him of his need. He exceedingly longs for that
- 19:21blessed state of perfect deliverance from all sin.
- 19:24At night he gives his soul up to God.
- 19:26Cast himself on him to be ordered and disposed of
- 19:28according to his sovereign pleasure, finding great peace
- 19:31and consolation trust in. God's sovereign will.
- 19:34A core Reformed idea? Absolutely.
- 19:36Then April 27th, early morning, God was pleased to pour such
- 19:39ineffable comfort into my soul, just overwhelming comfort.
- 19:43He cries out, Oh my sweet Savior, whom have I in heaven
- 19:47but thee? And there is none upon earth
- 19:48that I desire beside thee, God. Is everything to him in that
- 19:51moment. Everything, He says if he had
- 19:531000 lives, he'd gladly lay them all down at once to have been
- 19:56with Christ. He calls it the most refined and
- 19:59the most spiritual season of communion with God I ever yet
- 20:02felt, and says he never felt so great a degree of resignation in
- 20:05my life. The Absolute.
- 20:06Peak maybe, it sounds. Like it.
- 20:09But then the afternoon comes. He feels much declined, mourning
- 20:12again over the body of death that is in me.
- 20:15He grieves. He couldn't pray and prays with
- 20:17his heart still full of divine heavenly love, the swing back.
- 20:20Down. It's relentless, it is.
- 20:22April 28th, 2 hours in prayer, depending wholly on his dear
- 20:26Lord, feeling wholly weaned from all other dependences, longing
- 20:30for perfect conformity to Him, expressing these thirsting
- 20:33desires and insatiable longings after perfect holiness, that
- 20:37longing. For holiness is constant
- 20:38constant. He finds God was so precious to
- 20:41my soul that the world, with all its enjoyments, was infinitely
- 20:44vile. I had no more value for the
- 20:46favor of men than for pebbles. The land was my all, and that he
- 20:49overruled all greatly delighted me.
- 20:51His faith and dependence scarce ever rose so high.
- 20:54Gone is his. All yes.
- 20:56Sweetness and praying for friends, for the Kingdom.
- 20:59But then evening comes. His heart melts, humbled by
- 21:02indwelling corruption, Mourning like a dove, he feels all my
- 21:06unhappiness arose from my being a Sinner.
- 21:08He could welcome other trials, but sin hung heavy upon me.
- 21:12Sin is the ultimate burden. For him.
- 21:14Yes, he goes to bed with a heavy heart because I was a Sinner.
- 21:18Even though he doesn't doubt God's love, he prays God would
- 21:21purge away my dross and take away my tin and make me 7 times
- 21:24refined like refining. Metal in a fire.
- 21:27Exactly then April 29th, 30th he feels kept off at a distance
- 21:32from God, but still find some enlargement and inner recession.
- 21:35He's somewhat dejected, grieve that he cannot live constantly
- 21:38to God's glory. He feels he could bear spiritual
- 21:41darkness if only his heart was all the wild burning within me
- 21:44with love to God. Love is the.
- 21:45Key, even in darkness seems. So finally May 1st he cries out
- 21:49with fervency for ministerial qualifications for God to
- 21:52advance His Kingdom, bring in the heathen.
- 21:54He feels he had much assistance in my studies, calls it a
- 21:57profitable week with many communications of the blessed
- 22:00Spirit so even. Amidst all the highs and lows,
- 22:02that struggle with sin is just always there's like a constant
- 22:05background noise, sometimes louder, sometimes quieter.
- 22:09And this rhythm seems to carry on into May, Yes.
- 22:11Absolutely. That pattern really underscores
- 22:14the ongoing nature of, you know, spiritual growth and struggle.
- 22:17May 2nd God gives him a sight of myself as made me appear very
- 22:21vile in my own eyes. Another dose.
- 22:23Of self-awareness, a strong. One, he feels corruption
- 22:27stirring in my heart, which he could by no means suppress.
- 22:30He feels more and more deserted, was exceeding weak and almost
- 22:34sick with my inward trials. You get a sense of how draining
- 22:37this internal battle was for him physically, even almost making
- 22:40him. Sick.
- 22:41Yeah. Then May 3rd he feels the sense
- 22:43of vile ingratitude, mourns his abuse of my dear Lord.
- 22:47So what does he do? He spends the day in fasting and
- 22:50prayer. His go to.
- 22:51Response to spiritual struggle it seems to.
- 22:53Be and God meets him there, gives him much power of
- 22:56wrestling for his cause and Kingdom.
- 22:58And it was a happy day to my soul.
- 23:00He feels more above the world than ever in my life.
- 23:02So the discipline. Bears fruit it.
- 23:04Does, but the cycle continues for the rest of that week, May
- 23:084th to 8th. Jonathan Edwards summarizes that
- 23:11Brainerd frequently complained of desertion, inward trials, and
- 23:15conflicts attended with dejection of spirit.
- 23:18The lows. Were frequent they.
- 23:20Were. But Edwards also notes that
- 23:23Brainerd regularly recorded times of relief and sweetness
- 23:26and daily refreshing visits of the divine Spirit, which granted
- 23:30special assistance and comfort and enabled much fervency and
- 23:33enlargement and religious duties.
- 23:35So it wasn't all. Darkness.
- 23:36There was this constant ebb and flow exactly.
- 23:39A continuous rhythm of struggle and refreshment.
- 23:42That seems to be the pattern. It's really.
- 23:43Noticeable how relentless his focus on his own sin is, even
- 23:47when he's experiencing these clear moments of comfort from
- 23:50God. Now, how does all this internal
- 23:52struggle, especially this recurring feeling of being vile,
- 23:55connect back to his past, specifically that incident at
- 23:59Yale College? That's a really.
- 24:00Important connection to make. It makes you wonder how much
- 24:03those external events, like being expelled from Yale, were
- 24:06actually shaping this intense internal life he's recording.
- 24:09Did it fuel? The sense of unworthiness.
- 24:11Maybe it's. Possible, or perhaps it focused
- 24:13it. Look at May 9th, he writes.
- 24:16I think I never felt so much of the curse and pride of my heart
- 24:19as well as the stubbornness of my will before.
- 24:23He calls himself a vile Wretch, wanting only to submit, to be
- 24:26nothing and to lie down in the dust.
- 24:28Pride and. Stubbornness, the very things
- 24:30that arguably got him into trouble at Yale, could be.
- 24:33He felt such a Sinner all day that I had scarce any comfort,
- 24:37longing again to be delivered from the body of this death.
- 24:40He's even afraid he'll lose the spiritual benefit of his trials.
- 24:43Nothing seemed to touch me but only this.
- 24:45That I was a Sinner, This constant self emptying.
- 24:48It's central. And this.
- 24:49Continues as he travels, Yes. May 10th, the 13th, he rides to
- 24:53New Haven, find some comfort praying with others.
- 24:55They're hearing about God's goodness to them, but then
- 24:58writing to Wethersfield. He's very dull most of the day,
- 25:01little spiritual, feeling the ups and downs.
- 25:03Continue on the road right he's. Much perplexed with vile
- 25:06thoughts, sometimes afraid of everything, he craves solitude.
- 25:10I cannot live in the midst of a tumult.
- 25:11I long to enjoy. God alone seeking.
- 25:14Refuge in God alone? Exactly.
- 25:16He gets this distressing view of the pride, enmity, and vileness
- 25:20of my heart, sees so much of the wickedness of my heart that I
- 25:23longed to get away from myself. He feels he never realized how
- 25:26much spiritual pride he had. Feeling almost pressed to death
- 25:30with my own vileness, almost crushed.
- 25:32By it seems like. It but then he concludes with
- 25:34this gem oh the closest walk with God is the sweetest heaven
- 25:38that can be enjoyed on earth. Even in the depths of
- 25:41self-awareness. The goal is nearness to God, so
- 25:44we've. Seen this intense internal
- 25:46wrestling? Let's link it more directly now
- 25:48to the Yale situation. How is that specific past event,
- 25:52his expulsion, actually affecting him now, months later?
- 25:56Is it still a shadow? Oh, definitely.
- 25:58The diary makes it clear it still had a huge impact, but
- 26:00interestingly rather than say making him bitter or just
- 26:02breaking him, it seems to have pushed him closer to God,
- 26:06towards a deeper humility. Also, well, on May 14th there's
- 26:10a practical development. He waited on a Council of
- 26:12Ministers convened at Hartford. He actually presented his case,
- 26:16told them about the treatment I had met with from the rector and
- 26:18tutors of Yale College. So he's.
- 26:20Seeking redress he is. And the Council thought it
- 26:22advisable to intercede for me with the rector and trustees,
- 26:26and to entreat them to restore me to my former privileges in
- 26:29college. After this meeting he spends
- 26:32time in spiritual exercises with Christian friends.
- 26:34So the practical. Consequences are still very
- 26:36real. He needs this external
- 26:38validation. In a sense, he does.
- 26:40But his internal response remains focused on God from May
- 26:4415th to 19th. Writing to Hebron, he's somewhat
- 26:47dejected. Sees himself as exceeding vile,
- 26:50Sees much pride and stubbornness in my heart.
- 26:54He writes something remarkable here.
- 26:55Indeed, I never saw such a week as this before, for I have been
- 26:59almost ready to die with the view of the wickedness of my
- 27:01heart. I could not have thought I had
- 27:03such a body of death in me ready to.
- 27:05Die just from seeing his own sinfulness, that's how.
- 27:08Intense, it felt. He prays for deliverance,
- 27:11Edwards notes He continues to complain of dullness and
- 27:14desertion, feels vile, longs to hide himself in some cave,
- 27:17though there were still intervals of comfort hiding
- 27:19away. Yeah.
- 27:21Then at Millington, he feels amazingly deserted, a sort of
- 27:24horror reflecting when God withdraws what is there that can
- 27:28afford any comfort to the soul. It seems the Yale incident, by
- 27:33stripping away his institutional standing, perhaps forced him to
- 27:36rely even more heavily on an internal divine sense of worth
- 27:40rather than external approval making him.
- 27:43Learn more on God when human structures failed him possibly.
- 27:46But then after these deep lows, from May 20th to 31st, there's a
- 27:50shift again. He expresses more calmness and
- 27:53comfort and considerable life, fervency and sweetness, and
- 27:57religion a period of. Relative peace, yes.
- 27:59At New Haven on May 28th, he feels scarce ever felt so calm
- 28:03in my life. I rejoiced in resignation and
- 28:05giving myself up to God to be wholly and entirely devoted to
- 28:08Him forever. The next few days continue in a
- 28:10similar positive frame, maybe slightly less intense, but still
- 28:14moments of real peace and acceptance, that constant.
- 28:17Swing from deep dejection right back up to profound calmness.
- 28:20It really does show the intensity of the spiritual
- 28:22battle he was fighting every day it.
- 28:24Absolutely does. It highlights the dynamic,
- 28:26constantly moving nature of his spiritual life.
- 28:29It wasn't static at all. June 1st he feels much of the
- 28:33presence of God and family. Prayer finds some comfort and
- 28:37secret. He's greatly refreshed from the
- 28:39Word of God. Finds it exceeding sweet drawing
- 28:42strength. From Scripture, yes.
- 28:44And he prays for Christ's Kingdom to come with power, for
- 28:47the healing waters of the sanctuary to spread and heal the
- 28:50nation's. That outward vision is still
- 28:52there. But then.
- 28:53Reality intrudes again, Yeah. June 2nd to 5th.
- 28:55He's much diverted and hindered by physical weakness and
- 28:59necessary affairs. Practical life gets in the way.
- 29:02He speaks of having little power in religion, feeling God was
- 29:05showing him. He was like a helpless infant
- 29:08cast out in the open field. Utter.
- 29:10Helplessness. That's the.
- 29:11Feeling June 6th Sunday he feels much deserted, but then adds But
- 29:15all this teaches me my nothingness and vileness more
- 29:17than ever seeing even. Desertion is instructive,
- 29:20always. Learning from it June 7th, still
- 29:23feeling powerless in secret prayer, he has this remarkable
- 29:26desire that all God's people might know how mean and little
- 29:30and vile I am, that they might see I am nothing, that so they
- 29:34might pray for me a right and not have the least dependence
- 29:37upon me. He wants people to know his
- 29:40weakness so they won't depend on him, but on God.
- 29:43Exactly. It's about pointing people away
- 29:45from himself towards God. Then June 8th he enjoys a sweet
- 29:49and precious season, saying he never before felt it so sweet to
- 29:53be nothing and less than nothing and to be accounted nothing
- 29:56sweetness in. Nothingness.
- 29:57That's countercultural, to say the least.
- 29:59Deeply. Countercultural, but for
- 30:01Brainerd it was a source of spiritual relief and joy.
- 30:04The next three days, June 9th to 11th, he's back to complaining
- 30:07of desertion and want of fervency.
- 30:10But Edwards observes his diary still shows his heart was
- 30:12engaged in religion as his great and, as it were, only business.
- 30:17Even when feelings were low, his fundamental orientation remained
- 30:20fixed on God. It's truly.
- 30:22Remarkable how that desire to be nothing before God actually
- 30:25becomes a source of sweetness for Him.
- 30:27It flips our usual values upside down, and now we seem to be
- 30:31entering a period that showcases some of his absolute most
- 30:33intense devotion. Yes.
- 30:35These next entries really show an almost, you could say,
- 30:38radical level of spiritual focus.
- 30:40Just completely absorbed in God. June 12th.
- 30:43He spends much time in prayer, enjoys much sweetness, feels
- 30:48insatiable, longings after God, much of the day insatiable.
- 30:51Longings, yeah. He wonders how core souls do to
- 30:54live that have no God. For him, the world with all its
- 30:57endurements quite vanished. He sees himself as very
- 31:00helpless, but quickly adds, But I have a blessed God to go to
- 31:03helplessness. Leading to dependence always.
- 31:06He longs exceedingly to be dissolved and to be with Christ,
- 31:09to behold His glory. His weak, weary soul longs to
- 31:13arrive at my Father's house. That longing.
- 31:15For heaven is so strong, very strong.
- 31:18Then June. 13th Lord's Day. He feels something calm and
- 31:22resigned during public worship at the Lord's Supper.
- 31:25He sees himself as very vile and worthless.
- 31:28He longs to always lie low in the dust.
- 31:31His soul steadily goes out to God, wanting to live upon him.
- 31:34Humility. Even the communion table
- 31:35especially. There, it seems, then, June 14th
- 31:38is another day of really deep spiritual experience.
- 31:41He feels the sweetness of communion with God, the
- 31:44constraining force of his love, noting how admirably it
- 31:47captivates the soul captivated by.
- 31:49God's love, yes. He sets the day apart again for
- 31:52secret fasting and prayer, seeking guidance about preaching
- 31:55the gospel. In the afternoon, he wrestles
- 31:58ardently in intercession for absent friends, praying.
- 32:01Intensely for others. Again, very intensely.
- 32:03And then just at night, the Lord visited me marvelously in
- 32:06prayer. I think my soul never was in
- 32:08such an agony before. He felt no restraint, for the
- 32:11treasures of divine grace were open to me.
- 32:13And the agony. Of prayer.
- 32:14What was he praying for? He wrestled.
- 32:16For absent friends, for the in gathering of souls, for
- 32:19multitudes of poor souls, and for many that I thought were the
- 32:22children of God, He was in such an agony that I was all over wet
- 32:26with sweat. There's that physical
- 32:28manifestation again. Sweating from.
- 32:30Prayer, yes. And yet afterwards he felt he
- 32:33had wasted away the day and had done nothing.
- 32:35That sense of inadequacy persists, but then he connects
- 32:39his experience to Christ. Oh my dear, Jesus did sweat
- 32:42blood for poor souls. I longed for more compassion
- 32:45towards them. He goes to bed with his heart
- 32:47set on God. That comparison?
- 32:48To Christ in Gethsemane, sweating blood, that's
- 32:52incredibly powerful. It shows how deeply he
- 32:54identified with Christ's suffering for souls, really
- 32:57clarifies his whole spiritual drive.
- 32:59It absolutely. Does it shows a complete
- 33:01alignment of his heart with what he understood to be Christ's
- 33:04heart? Then June 15th, he records
- 33:07having the most ardent longings after God that ever I felt in my
- 33:10life even more intense. Seems so.
- 33:12In private prayer he tells his dear Lord, he knew I longed for
- 33:16nothing but himself, nothing but holiness, He says.
- 33:20He never seemed to be so unhinged for myself and to be so
- 33:24wholly devoted to God. Unhinged.
- 33:26From myself, that's a striking phrase.
- 33:28I don't know like. Being freed from self
- 33:30preoccupation, his heart was swallowed up in God most of the
- 33:33day. In the evening he gets this
- 33:35vision of the soul being enlarged to contain more
- 33:37holiness, so much so that it seemed ready to separate from my
- 33:41body. Wow.
- 33:42Almost an out of body feeling connected to holiness.
- 33:45That's how he. Describes it.
- 33:46He wrestles in an agony for divine blessings, praise for
- 33:49friends beyond what I ever had before.
- 33:52He feels more engaged to live to God forever, but interestingly
- 33:55less pleased with my own frames. His own spiritual feelings, he
- 33:59felt they were far too little so even.
- 34:01In peak experiences, he's not satisfied with the experience
- 34:04itself, right the. Focus remains on God and
- 34:06holiness, not the feeling. Then June 18th, he's thinking
- 34:10about his great unfitness for the work of the ministry, his
- 34:13present deadness, his total inability.
- 34:15So what does he do? Sets apart another day for
- 34:17prayer. Prayer as.
- 34:18The answer to feelings of inadequacy consistently.
- 34:21But he feels amazingly deserted most of the day.
- 34:25Yet God draws near once, opens his heart as he pleads for more
- 34:28compassion for immortal souls, enabling ardent cries.
- 34:32Still he's distressed, thinking he offers such dead cold
- 34:35services to the living God. Still feeling.
- 34:37Unworthy. Yes, his.
- 34:38Souls seem to breathe after holiness, a life of constant
- 34:41devotedness to God. He feels almost lost sometimes
- 34:44in the pursuit of this blessedness.
- 34:46Ready to sink because I continually fall short in miss
- 34:48of my desire. He prays for help just to hold
- 34:51out the struggle. Is real even in the midst of
- 34:54intense seeking. Very real.
- 34:56June 20th, Lord's day, much time alone.
- 34:59Soul longs for holiness, reaches for God but doesn't feel
- 35:02satisfied. Hungered and thirsted but was
- 35:04not refreshed yet. His soul hung on.
- 35:06God is my only portion. He desires to grow in grace more
- 35:09abundantly every day. Holding on.
- 35:11To God even when feeling empty. Exactly.
- 35:14Then June 22nd, after studies and prayer, he sweetly composed
- 35:18and resigned to God's will, and able to leave everything with
- 35:21God, depend wholly on him. And then this statement.
- 35:25It's such a happiness to have God for my portion, that I had
- 35:28rather be any other creature in this lower creation than not
- 35:31come to the enjoyment of God. I'd rather be a beast than a man
- 35:35without God. If I were to live here to
- 35:37eternity, that's. Extreme.
- 35:39He'd rather be an animal than a human without God, that's what
- 35:42he says. It shows just how absolutely
- 35:43central God was to his existence, to his very identity
- 35:47as a human being, underscores. His priorities completely.
- 35:49It does. And the rest of June, from the
- 35:5123rd to the 29th. Edwards summarizes the diary as
- 35:54showing this ongoing cycle. Great longings after God and
- 35:57holiness, desires for others, conversion, fervent prayer,
- 36:00wrestling with God. Moments of composure, comfort,
- 36:03sweetness, the positive. Side right.
- 36:05But also the other side, a recurring sense of the vile
- 36:09abomination of his heart, complaints of barrenness, the
- 36:12pressing body of death. He sees clearly that anything he
- 36:16enjoys better than hell was a free grace.
- 36:19He feels exceeding low, sometimes very disconsolate and
- 36:23dejected. The full.
- 36:24Spectrum right to the end of the month, the full.
- 36:26Spectrum. Never Just one thing for long.
- 36:30So even after all these incredibly deep experiences,
- 36:32these highs and lows, his spiritual path still throws
- 36:36significant trials at him right up to the brink of this really
- 36:40pivotal moment. Getting licensed to preach.
- 36:42Yeah, this. Final Stretch is a powerful
- 36:44reminder that even, you know, exceptionally devoted people
- 36:46face really intense internal battles.
- 36:48It just goes to show how much we constantly need God support.
- 36:51So what? Happens in these last weeks,
- 36:54June 30th. Is a particularly rough day, he
- 36:56spends it alone in the woods and fasting and prayer again,
- 36:59seeking God intensely, but he underwent the most dreadful
- 37:03conflicts in my soul that ever I felt in some respects worse
- 37:06than. Before in some.
- 37:07Respects, he says. He sees himself as so vile that
- 37:11I was ready to say I shall now perish by the hand of Saul, like
- 37:15he's doomed to fail. He feels he has no power to
- 37:18stand for the cause of God, is almost afraid of the shaking of
- 37:22a leaf, crippling. Fear and self doubt completely.
- 37:25He spends almost the whole day in prayer incessantly.
- 37:29He could not bear to think of Christian showing me any
- 37:31respect. He almost despaired of doing any
- 37:34service in the world. Even his usual comfort thinking
- 37:37about the heathen fails him. Could not feel any hope or
- 37:40comfort respecting the heathen. He spends the day in the
- 37:42bitterness of my soul. Only near nightfall does he feel
- 37:46a little better. That sounds.
- 37:47Utterly draining just days before his examination.
- 37:49Exactly. But then July 1st and 2nd,
- 37:52there's some recovery. He finds some sweetness in
- 37:55prayer, feels exceeding sweetly in secret prayer, desiring
- 37:59nothing so ardently as that God should do with me just as he
- 38:01pleased. He feels composed his desires
- 38:04ascended to God while traveling back to.
- 38:05Resignation, Yes, Yeah. But July 3rd, his heart seemed
- 38:09again to sink. And guess what comes back to
- 38:12haunt him? Let me guess.
- 38:13Yale Bingo. The disgrace I was laid under at
- 38:16college seemed to damp me as it opens the mouths of opposers.
- 38:20It's still there, this fear of public opinion, of how his past
- 38:23failure undermines his present calling.
- 38:25Still weighing. On him still weighing.
- 38:28But his response is immediate. I had no refuge but in God.
- 38:32Blessed be his name, that I may go to Him at all times and find
- 38:35Him a present help. It's so.
- 38:37Striking, isn't it, that even months later, the Yale incident
- 38:41is still a source of pain, Yet every time it surfaces, it seems
- 38:44to drive him deeper into relying solely on God.
- 38:48What does that tell us about how God uses trials?
- 38:51I think that's. A key insight right there.
- 38:52It tells us that even hardships that bring, you know, public
- 38:55shame or perceived failure, God can actually refine them for
- 38:58greater spiritual good. It wasn't about the trial
- 39:00disappearing, but about how God used it to redirect Brainerd's
- 39:04focus and dependence away from human.
- 39:05Approval towards divine sufficiency, Exactly.
- 39:08And we see that play out on July 4th, Lord's Day.
- 39:10He enjoys a happy season in secret prayer.
- 39:13God gives him the exercise of faith which brings the invisible
- 39:17and eternal world near to my soul, which appeared sweetly to
- 39:20me. Faith.
- 39:21Making the eternal real, yes. He hopes his weary pilgrimage
- 39:26will be short, that he'll soon be in his heavenly home and
- 39:29Father's house. But he's also resigned to God's
- 39:32will to tarry his time to do his work and suffer his pleasure
- 39:36content. Either way seems.
- 39:37So, and he feels thankfulness to God for all my pressing
- 39:41desertions of late, for I am persuaded they have been made a
- 39:44means of making me more humble and much more resigned.
- 39:47He feels pleased to be little, to be nothing, and to lie in the
- 39:51dust. I mean benefit.
- 39:52Even in the hard times, yes. And he finds life and
- 39:55consolation pleading for other believers and for God's Kingdom,
- 39:59still breathing after holiness and the enjoyment of God so
- 40:02real. Sense of peace and purpose
- 40:04returning, it seems. So July 5th to 10th.
- 40:07He enjoys considerable composure and tranquility with sweetness
- 40:10and fervency of spirit in prayer day after day.
- 40:13A period of stability. Nice to see.
- 40:15But then. July 11th.
- 40:16The struggle bites again, deserted and exceedingly
- 40:19dejected in the morning. In the afternoon, though, he
- 40:21feels resigned and again sees himself as exceeding.
- 40:24Violet just never fully goes away.
- 40:26That awareness, the wrestling. Is persistent very.
- 40:30July 12th to 14th. He expresses inward comfort,
- 40:33resignation, and strengthen. God feels a kind of humble,
- 40:37resigned sweetness giving himself holy to the Lord.
- 40:41He hears Mr. Bellamy, which makes him long for nearer access
- 40:45to God. Hearing good.
- 40:46Preaching stirs him up. Yeah.
- 40:48Then July. 15th to 20th. Considerable comfort and
- 40:51fervency in Christian fellowship and spiritual exercises.
- 40:55His desires are particularly focused on weenedness from the
- 40:59world, perfect deadness to it, and to be even crucified to all
- 41:02its allurements. Wanting.
- 41:04Detachment from worldly things complete.
- 41:06Detachment. His soul longs to feel itself
- 41:08more of a Pilgrim and stranger here below, That nothing may
- 41:11divert me from pressing through the lonely desert till I arrive
- 41:14at my father's house. He finds it sweet to give away
- 41:16myself to God. It's a feeling sense of the
- 41:19sweetness of being a Pilgrim on earth, embracing.
- 41:21That Pilgrim identity fully. July 21st He's determined to be
- 41:25wholly devoted to God, spends the whole day in a most diligent
- 41:28exercise of religion, and exceeding comfortably a good.
- 41:32Solid day seems like. It then July 22nd, something
- 41:35interesting happens while traveling.
- 41:37He stops at a house, is very kindly entertained and
- 41:40refreshed. And his reaction?
- 41:42Let me guess. Feeling unworthy?
- 41:44You got it. He's filled with amazement and
- 41:46shame that God should stir up the hearts of any to show so
- 41:49much kindness to such a dead dog as I.
- 41:52He realizes how exceedingly vile it is not to be wholly devoted
- 41:56to God. He wonders why God even allows
- 41:58creatures to feed him, even simple.
- 42:00Kindness triggers that sense of unworthiness.
- 42:02It never leaves him. Never.
- 42:04Then July 23rd to 28th, the final stretch before the
- 42:07examination. His diary shows this mix again.
- 42:09Sweet composure and fervency, weenedness from the world,
- 42:13feeling like a Pilgrim wanting to use every inch of time for
- 42:16God. Final preparation.
- 42:17Spiritually speaking, exactly and.
- 42:19Then July 29th, the culmination of this whole intense period,
- 42:22Brainerd is examined by the association, met at Danbury as
- 42:26to my learning and also my experiences in religion and
- 42:28received a license from them to preach the gospel of Christ.
- 42:31He did it. He's.
- 42:32Licensed. He's.
- 42:33Licensed, and afterwards he feels much devoted to God.
- 42:38He joins in prayer with one of the ministers.
- 42:40His peculiar friend goes to bed resolving to live.
- 42:44Devoted to God all my days. A fitting end.
- 42:46Of that chapter dissolve to live devotedly a seal.
- 42:49On this period of intense formation as he steps into his
- 42:52formal calling, deeply shaped by everything we've just walked
- 42:56through. Wow.
- 42:58What an incredible deep dive that was into just a few short
- 43:01months of David Brainer's life. His honesty, his really candid
- 43:05diary entries. They just let us witness a man
- 43:08intensely wrestling with how sinful he felt he was.
- 43:11Yeah. Grappling with that constantly
- 43:13while depending. Completely on God's grace and
- 43:15just passionately going after a personal holiness and wanting to
- 43:18see God's Kingdom grow right and.
- 43:20His experiences, you know, marked by these really intense
- 43:23lows, but also these incredible spiritual highs.
- 43:26They really underline something vital for anyone trying to walk
- 43:29closely with God, don't they? That the path is almost never a
- 43:32straight line. It's full of ups and downs, but
- 43:35God uses every single moment, the good and the bad, to shape
- 43:39us, to refine us. Brainerd's sense of being
- 43:42nothing before God. It seems almost paradoxical, but
- 43:47it actually fueled his drive to live entirely for God's glory.
- 43:51That's a great. Point.
- 43:51And for you, the listener, maybe someone who likes to grasp
- 43:54things quickly get those aha moments.
- 43:57Brainerd's example shows that, well, maybe genuine devotion
- 44:00often comes packaged with this really deep self-awareness,
- 44:04maybe even awareness of failure. Yeah, and an.
- 44:06Absolute reliance on divine favor, not on your own strength
- 44:10or smarts. Exactly.
- 44:11His constant return to prayer. His fervent prayers for others.
- 44:15It really highlights where real spiritual strength comes from,
- 44:17doesn't it? Not from within, but from God
- 44:19and if you connect. This to the bigger picture.
- 44:21Brainerd's account really gives you a clearview into how God
- 44:24gets people ready for his work. It happens even through things
- 44:28that look like setbacks, like the Yale expulsion, or through
- 44:30all those internal conflicts he faced so.
- 44:33His journey to getting licensed wasn't just about hitting the
- 44:35books, not at. All it was about a profound
- 44:38shaping of his entire being, his character, his heart.
- 44:42God was preparing the man, not just the preacher.
- 44:45That leaves this with something to think about, doesn't it?
- 44:48What does all this mean for us today?
- 44:50Consider Brainerd's resolution on the day he got his license.
- 44:54Resolving to live devoted to God All my days.
- 44:57A simple. But total resolve right?
- 45:00So the question for you is what parts of your own walk with God
- 45:04might be deepened if you adopted that kind of singular focus on
- 45:07God's design for you, even when you're feeling weak or facing
- 45:10pressures from the world around you?
- 45:12Yeah, what would? That look like it's definitely
- 45:13something to chew on. Thank you so much for joining us
- 45:16for this deep dive into David Brainerd's diary.
- 45:18We hope. That hearing about his raw
- 45:20honesty might spark some reflection for you on your own
- 45:23spiritual growth and your own dependence on God's grace.
