- 0:01Today we'll read Psalm 5 from from the book of Psalms.
- 0:05First, let's pray. Dear Lord, please speak to us
- 0:09through these words in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:14This is says it's from or for the director of music for pipes,
- 0:20a Psalm of David. So David's the one who
- 0:23contributed this one. Here's what he says.
- 0:27Listen to my words, Lord, Consider my lament, Hear my cry
- 0:31for help. My king and my God, for you, I
- 0:36pray in the morning. Lord, you hear my voice in the
- 0:41morning. I lay my request before you and
- 0:44wait expectantly, for you are not a God who is pleased with
- 0:50wickedness. With you, evil people are not
- 0:53welcome, The arrogant cannot stand in your presence.
- 0:57You hate all who do wrong. You destroy those who tell lies.
- 1:04The bloodthirsty and deceitful you, Lord, detest.
- 1:09But I, by your great love, can come into your house.
- 1:13In reverence I bow down toward your holy temple.
- 1:18Lead me, Lord, in your righteousness.
- 1:20Because of my enemies, make your way straight before me.
- 1:25Not a word from their mouth can be trusted.
- 1:28Their heart is filled with malice.
- 1:31Their throat is an open grave. With their tongues they tell
- 1:35lies. Declare them guilty.
- 1:38O God, let their intrigues be their downfall.
- 1:42Banish them for their many sins, for they have rebelled against
- 1:47You. But let all who take refuge in
- 1:51you be glad. Let them ever sing for joy.
- 1:56Spread your protection over them, that those who love Your
- 2:00name may rejoice in you. Surely, Lord, you bless the
- 2:05righteous you, surround them with your favour as with a
- 2:09shield. And that ends Psalm 5.
- 2:13There's a few questions and answers in the study Bible and
- 2:15then I'll go through some things that I noticed in this.
- 2:19So are there sometimes of the day better than are sometimes of
- 2:24the day better for prayer than others?
- 2:27David likely prayed at scheduled hours of the day because there
- 2:30was a clear rhythm to worship life in Jerusalem, which was
- 2:34shaped by temple activities. In this case, David's reference
- 2:38to morning prayers most likely stressed the urgency of a
- 2:41particular matter. He couldn't do anything else
- 2:44until he had asked God to resolve a troubling problem.
- 2:48Thus, it is unlikely that this text was meant to teach that the
- 2:52morning is the best time for prayer.
- 2:54Any time is an appropriate time for prayer.
- 2:57Who were these bloodthirsty and deceitful people?
- 3:01Though we do not know the historical context for this
- 3:03Psalm, David could have been thinking of one, King Saul who
- 3:08repeatedly tried to kill him. Two, Saul's family who
- 3:12challenged David's rule. Or three, David's own sons who
- 3:17tried to steal the Kingdom from him.
- 3:19What is certain is that David equated lying, murder, and
- 3:24rebellion against God's appointed leader with conspiracy
- 3:28against God himself. Were David's enemies really as
- 3:32evil as he said they were? They certainly could have been.
- 3:36However, the Psalms expressed the feelings of their authors,
- 3:39so they may not be. They may not necessarily offer
- 3:43objective analysis. David felt so repulsed by his
- 3:48enemies that only that only such graphic words could describe
- 3:53what their speech was like to him.
- 3:55So there's other things that I noticed when I was reading this.
- 3:59And obviously it was a morning prayer.
- 4:02So it's starting out in the very morning to speak to God about
- 4:05everything. And there is a pattern that we
- 4:09see here when we look at the words that David uses.
- 4:13And the pattern that I noticed was he's requesting from God.
- 4:18He's crying out. He, he has a request before God
- 4:21that he's doing first thing in the morning and then the next
- 4:26thing it says in verse 3, it says he waits, he waits for God
- 4:32to respond. And I know that's a question of
- 4:35many of us who want to hear from God and, and just waiting.
- 4:40And then if we wait and we don't hear anything, and I actually
- 4:43heard something today that was I think is very helpful and, and
- 4:49true. Like if we are making decisions,
- 4:52the 1st place we should go is the word of God to be led by the
- 4:57Spirit to answer the question. And we can find other examples
- 5:03of the Bible where situations were similar.
- 5:07And it's applying the knowledge of the Bible to our own lives.
- 5:12And that's where we can get advice from God from the Spirit.
- 5:16When the the stories in the Bible, the detailed accounts of
- 5:22multiple people's lives, when we can see a similar event
- 5:27happening and how it was resolved, how God felt about it,
- 5:31what God did, what God said, then we can use that as
- 5:35direction in our life. So and that we are guided by the
- 5:38Holy Spirit in that application of it.
- 5:42Then the next another resource for this is there are people
- 5:47within the what they what is called in Christianity as the
- 5:51body of Christ. These are people who have the
- 5:54Holy Spirit who have that personal relationship with God,
- 5:58who are living in obedience to God because of the Holy Spirit
- 6:03that is in their life. And these are the people that we
- 6:06can go to for godly counsel. They would not, you know, we
- 6:11always have to test everything from a person because people are
- 6:15not infallible. So only God is infallible.
- 6:20But when it's someone who is filled with the Holy Spirit,
- 6:24they may point something out to us from Scripture that maybe we
- 6:27passed by, we didn't pay attention to.
- 6:30And then it can help us in our decision making by relying on
- 6:35scripture through spoken through other people who are also in
- 6:39Scripture. And then the other question for
- 6:44a decision is, does this bring us closer to God or further from
- 6:50God what we're thinking about doing?
- 6:54And, and so that would be another way to look at a
- 7:00decision. And then silence.
- 7:04This is what I just heard today. And I just thought it was good.
- 7:06So I was repeating this. It was from a pastor out of
- 7:09Texas. But silence may mean that we are
- 7:12on the right path. So if we don't hear anything and
- 7:15it doesn't contradict his word and we're not having, you know,
- 7:19fellow believers who are filled with the Holy Spirit telling us,
- 7:22no, you're on the wrong path. You know, if we don't have
- 7:25resistance like that. And it is bringing us closer to
- 7:29God, not further from God. Then the silence just may mean
- 7:34that you know God, you know it's he will work with however we do
- 7:37it, like he lets us have our free will.
- 7:40And, and it may be a prayer and something that I say is like God
- 7:44make it obvious if I'm on the wrong path, if I'm doing the
- 7:47wrong thing, if I'm not hearing correctly.
- 7:50And, and I believe God will do that because he wants us to be
- 7:54within his will. He wants us to be protected and
- 7:57he wants us to reflect him. So I think those are all things
- 8:03that are really good. I didn't come up with that.
- 8:05I heard it today, but I just thought it was very relevant.
- 8:08And then within the Scripture in verse 5 of Psalm 5, it talks
- 8:14about the arrogant cannot stand. So what is the opposite of an
- 8:20arrogant person and say humble person?
- 8:22So we need to humble ourselves before God and I think that we
- 8:27have that we we, you know, know it all or anything like humble
- 8:31ourselves and honestly look at ourselves.
- 8:34So the next thing in verse 6, it's it's basically a reflection
- 8:39on our lives. I mean, he's reflecting on
- 8:42others lives. But first, I think we need to
- 8:44look at our own lives and just reflect about what we are doing.
- 8:49And if there are these things that he's talking about that
- 8:52David's talking about that about his enemies are those things in
- 8:57our lives and we need to humble ourselves and then be
- 9:00accountable for the things that are in our lives.
- 9:03And then in verse 7, David's showing respect for God.
- 9:07He says in reverence, I bow down.
- 9:10And because of his respect for God, then he's able to come into
- 9:16the house. That's that's you know, it's
- 9:18like this. You know, David's son of God,
- 9:21you know, it's an adopted child of God.
- 9:24And when we believe and when we are filled with the Holy Spirit,
- 9:32then we become a child of God and we respect the Father and we
- 9:38respect Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
- 9:42And then it says in verse 8 to basically lead me and make your
- 9:48way straight before me. So give me guidance.
- 9:51And then verse 9, it talks about the heart of someone.
- 9:56So we have to the examination of the heart, the heart condition
- 10:00like not the physical heart, but where, where are the desires of
- 10:07the person? Is it to please people or to
- 10:10please God? And so we have to look at our
- 10:13heart condition like are we are we submitted to Christ?
- 10:18Is Jesus our Lord? Do we are we abiding in his law?
- 10:26And the next part it talks about banish them for their sins for
- 10:30they have rebelled against you. So sin is rebellion.
- 10:34And so if if we have sin in our life, that's rebellion to God.
- 10:39And that's something that needs to be dealt with.
- 10:42But then it also says, but let all who take refuge in you.
- 10:48So just God refuge in God is our protection.
- 10:52It says spread your protection over them.
- 10:54Those who love your name and then it says you bless the
- 10:59righteous, you surround them with your favor as a shield.
- 11:03So there there are blessings and it just the format was basically
- 11:08request wait, humble ourselves, reflect on our lives, respect
- 11:15God. He will lead us, examine our
- 11:18heart condition, examine sin because sin is rebellion, take
- 11:23refuge in God. God is our protection and God
- 11:28gives us blessings and Shields us when we do this.
- 11:32So I think it was a beautiful prayer, beautiful Psalm, and
- 11:36just a way to to look at communicating with God and what
- 11:41it was like with David. He was known as a man after
- 11:45God's own heart. So this is showing us, you know
- 11:49what that looks like. Anyway, that's the end of Psalm
- 11:535. If you found this helpful,
- 11:54please share it with others. If you are not subscribed and
- 11:57want to stay in the Word, I try to do a chapter a day.
